US House resolution commits to work with Modi government The resolution seeks to further strengthen US strategic partnership with India in areas like defense, trade and security IANS, WASHINGTON

A

s the US reaches out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a dozen lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan congressional resolution committing to working with his government “to advance shared values and interests”. Co-sponsored among others by lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera and the first Hindu-American lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, the resolution also seeks “to further strengthen our strategic partnership with India, including in the defense, trade, and security arenas.” The resolution “congratulates the people of India on holding the largest democratic exercise in history of the world”. Introduced by Republican Aaron Schock, the resolution’s other co-sponsors included chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce and the top

to voice their commitment to “continuing to strengthen our strategic partnership.” The resolution “marks a shift in US policy and signals growing congressional support, puts forth

the official position of the House of Representatives on this matter of national and global importance,” Schock said. Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on May 31 said he is planning to visit India later this year to drive “transformational cooperation” with the country which is playing an “active role” in strengthening security in Asia. Hagel, referring to India's growing defense capabilities, said the United States looked forward to working with the new Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We welcome India's increasingly active role in Asia's regional institutions, which strengthens regional order. We also welcome India's growing defense capabilities and its commitment to freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean,” Hagel said in a wide-ranging policy speech at an international security conference, the Shangri la dialogue, in Singapore.

US official headed for Delhi to build bridges with Modi WASHINGTON: The US is sending Nisha Desai Biswal, its pointperson for South Asia, to build bridges with the new Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom it had shunned for over a decade, Biswal, the first IndianAmerican Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, will be in New Delhi June 6-9, making the first visit to India Nisha Desai Biswal by a senior State Department official since India’s national elections brought Modi to power. While in New Delhi, “she will meet with a range of officials in the new Government of India to review the full scope of bilateral and regional issues,” the State department announced. Biswal’s travel announcement comes a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry called up new Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to congratulate her and discuss “re-energizing strategic” ties.

State Department did it: Bharara on Khobragade Mani Shankar Aiyar’s comment WASHINGTON: Manhattan’s Indiaborn US prosecutor has defended his role in the arrest and prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, saying it was the State Department that opened the case. The December arrest and alleged strip search of Khobragade, India’s then deputy consul general in New York on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her housekeeper, caused a major diplomatic row that threatened to derail India-US relations. But in a speech laced with humor at Harvard Law school, Bharara insisted that he became “personally aware” that Khobragade would be arrested only a couple of days before the arrest was scheduled. He was upset

over the “stupid” criticism of his conduct and was bothered by the “line of attack” made by the Indian government and media. It was suggested that he brought the case to “serve his white masters, presumably (US Attorney General) Eric Holder and (President) Barack

Obama”, both of whom are black. “Indian critics were angry because even though I hailed from India, I appeared to be going out of my way to act American and serve the interests of America, which was odd because I am American and the words US are in my title,” he said. Bharara’s Harvard address got less play in the US media than IndianAmerican actress Mindy Kaling’s hilarious speech though the celebrity prosecutor “managed to combine humor and wisdom, in magnificent fashion”, David Lat commented in Above the Law. Bharara has successfully prosecuted 79 high-profile Wall Street executives, including Indian-American Rajat Gupta.

Kerry congratulates Sushma, discusses re-energizing ties IANS, NEW DELHI

U

S Secretary of State John Kerry called up External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to congratulate her on ministerial posting and discussed “re-energizing strategic” ties, an official said on May 29. Kerry called up Sushma Swaraj late on May 28 night. It was the first congratulatory call that she received from one of her counterparts around the world.

John Kerry

“The US secretary congratulated the minister and the party (BJP) on its election victory,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs told IANS. Kerry spoke about the economic agenda of the new Indian government and said the US was keen to boost bilateral trade to $500 billion from the current around $100 billion. Sushma thanked the US secretary of state and spoke about enhancing the Indo-US strategic partnership.

W

hen he made his now infamous comment about the recently elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi being a ‘chai wala’, Congress spokesperson Mani Shankar Aiyar may not have had any inkling that the comment would give an impetus to Indian-Americans to launch a ‘chai pe charcha’ movement to help Modi win the prime ministership. While, several Indian Americans in major cities across the United States campaigned for Modi’s election, the most organized movement was in Houston, Texas, where, since January this year, a group of about 700 worked round the clock to motivate voters in India. The volunteer group intensified their efforts in the two months preceding the voting. “The preparations were almost like that for an Indian wedding,” said Ramesh Bhutada, a Houston businessman and philanthropist, who was one of the prime movers of the campaign. “We had volunteers calling up their relatives, friends and friend of friends in India.” Initially, the focus of the phone calls was to get people to participate in the voting process. Voters

were told that they finally had the power to change the destiny of the country. “Some of the voters — especially the middle aged and elderly — appeared very cynical,” Bhutada said. Later in the phone campaign, the volunteers asked the voters to look at Modi’s candidature citing his economic development track record in Gujarat. In addition, several hundred Indian-Americans traveled to India to participate physically in the election campaign for Modi and the BJP.

Yakub Memon’s execution withheld NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on June 2 suspended execution of the death sentence of 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case convict Yakub Abdul Razak Memon as it issued notice to the central government on his petition challenging the apex court’s rules guiding the review of capital punishment order. Suspending Yakub Memon’s execution, a bench of Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan tagged his plea with that of December 2000 Red Fort attack death row convict Mohamed Arif. President Pranab Mukherjee on May 21 rejected

Memon’s mercy plea. He had applied for Presidential pardon in October 2013. Appearing for Memon, senior counsel Upamanyu Hazarika told the Yakoob Memon court that the Law Commission in its report in 2003 said that the appeal in death sentence cases in the Supreme Court should be heard by a five-judge bench but note d this recommendation has not been acted upon so far.

SC lifts freeze on Sahara assets NEW DELHI: Sahara group chief Subrata Roy will remain in jail even as the Supreme Court on June 4 lifted the freeze on the group’s moveable and immovable assets so it could raise `100 billion for part repayment to investors. The Sahara group had told the Supreme Court on May 29 that it was selling its three prime properties in London and New York to raise money to secure the release of Subrata Roy and two other directors. An apex court bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice A.K. Sikri allowed Sahara to

encash its fixed deposits, bonds and securities and the money so generated will be deposited in an account opened by market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The court also allowed Sahara to sell its properties located in nine cities to generate the balance `50 billion that it has to pay SEBI in cash. The court also allowed Sahara to mortgage its Aambey Valley property to raise a bank guarantee of `50 billion. The court had directed Sahara to return investors’ `240 billion, collected by SIRECL and SHICL.

Two Indian-American teens spell history Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe declared co-champions in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee contest for only the fourth time in the bee’s 89-year history ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

Spelling contest stirs racial comments

C

hildren of Indian origin in the United States again excelled as Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe were declared co-champions in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee contest for only the fourth time in the bee’s 89-year history. Indian Americans, who have won the championship eleven times in the last 16 years, swept the top three spots this year as they did in the previous two years. This year 281 spellers from eight countries competed for the coveted title in the national championship sponsored by English-language newspapers and educational foundations in the US. The contestants spell out a broad selection of words with increasing degree of difficulty testing one’s vocabulary and usage. “The competition was against the dictionary, not against each other,” Sriram said after both were showered with confetti onstage after being declared joint winners for the first time since 1962. “I’m happy to share this trophy with him,” said 13 year old Sujoe. “Whatever,” said Sujoe, 7th grader from Fort Worth, Texas, as the seconds ticked down at the contest at the National Harbour Thursday night.

NRI fundraiser in holocaust body WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has appointed Shefali Razdan Duggal, a top Indian-American fundraiser of his 2012 re-election campaign, as a member of the governing board of trustees of the US Holocaust Memorial museum. Duggal’s appointment to the 55-member US Holocaust Memorial Council for a five-year term was announced by the White House. “The extraordinary dedication these men and women bring to their new roles will greatly serve the AmerShefali R Duggal ican people,” said Obama. She is also a co-chair for the ‘Ready for Hillary PAC’, a key political action committee that is “encouraging” former secretary of state to run for president in 2016. Razdan Duggal is a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) National Finance Committee and is the DNC National Co-Chair for the Women’s Leadership Forum.

Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe after winning the contest.

He couldn’t get the word, “feuilleton,” out of his mouth, but he spelled it correctly. Sujoe shared the trophy with Sriram, 14, the lone repeat finalist of Painted Post, New York. His last correct spelling was “sti-

chomythia.” The duo spelling victory for Indian-Americans for the seventh time in a row shared the title and a $30,000 scholarship. The last co-champions were in 1962. Before that joint winners were declared in 1950 and 1957. In the final-round duel, Ansun and Sriram were both named champions after spelling a dozen words correctly in a row and nearly exhausting the 25 designated championship words.

WASHINGTON: As two youngsters of Indian descent spelled history by jointly winning the coveted Scripps National Spelling Bee for a record seventh year in a row, they also stirred storm of racially charged comments in the U.S. The fact that Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe on May 29 night kept up the victory run of Indian-Americans that began in 1999 producing a dozen champions in the last 16 years, proved too much for some of them. It was “for the first time in more than 50 years, two young wordsmiths were declared co-champions” as the Washington Post noted. “However, some on social media seemed more preoccupied with their heritage than their way with words,” said the daily. Among the tweets cited by the Post were: “Where are our American kids?” And: “Nothing more American than a good spelling bee.. Oh wait all the Caucasians are eliminated - Cale Pieczynski (@CalePie).” The Washington Post also cited other comments on social media arguing “race has nothing do with where these spellers were born.” “wow that blows the spelling bee ends with a tie thats so friggin unAmerican no wonder the kids that won

it are Indian,” tweeted Chris Uhl Jr from Massachusetts. Journalist Jeff Chu collected the tweets and commented; “Why did the tweets hit me hard? I was a bee kid’91, lost on “rimur.” And I want those kids never to be asked, “Where are you really from?” Another commentator Ezra Klein

Some on social media seemed more busy with their heritage than their way with words tweeted “Turns out spelling bees bring out a lot of racists: http://bit.ly/1kPI0n3.” “....so according to these geniuses, only Caucasians are “American” when it comes to the spelling bee?” responded Nicole Forbes from Austin, Texas. “Just because the face on the screen isn’t white, it doesn’t make the #spellingbee finalists any less American, commented Rebecca Hong. “Oh come on!! What is so un-american about them? Not satisfied with their buttoned up T shirts and a bow tie?????” tweeted amkere.

Visa issue not to impact US Telugu body creating funds for Andhra, Telangana India-US ties: Indian expert IANS, WASHINGTON IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he Telugu Association of North America (TANA) is creating two special earmarked funds for the development of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh and for development of Telangana after the bifurcation of Andhra. The decision to set up Andhra Pradesh Capital Development Fund and Telangana Development Fund was taken by TANA Executive Committee at the request of several TANA mem-

bers who wanted to take a constructive role in the development of the two new states. TANA will consult with the respective state governments regarding the appropriate utilization and disbursement of these funds, TANA president Mohan Nannapaneni announced Friday. TANA president and secretary general and other members are working closely with state and central governments in identifying the projects and needs.

N

arendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) stunning election victory had put behind the issue of US visa for him and it’s unlikely to impact bilateral ties with the US, according to a noted Indian strategic expert. After his election victory, the new Indian prime minister had made it clear that how India engages with US bilaterally would not be impacted by how an individual was treated, Commodore (retd.) C Uday Bhaskar, Distinguished Fellow, Society for Policy Studies, said on June 3. But Modi, whose US visa was revoked in 2005 for his alleged complicity in the 2002 Gujarat riots, was unlikely to visit the US in a hurry, he said in a talk on “India-US Ties Under Narendra Modi” at the Hudson Institute, a Washington think tank. In Bhaskar’s view the UN general assembly session in September would be the first contact between the US and Indian leaders.

Modi’s first priority was the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Japan. Modi has little foreign policy experience yet he “hit the ground running” with an invitation to SAARC leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony. “With that one act Modi has energized a moribund SAARC,” Bhaskar said and he expected the new Indian leader to do the same with “moribund” India-US relations. Comparing the landmark India-US nuclear deal to the NixonKissinger opening to China, Bhaskar said it had not only “ended India’s nuclear isolation but also brought India into the larger global politico-diplomatic grid.” He also expected the new Indian parliament to revisit the nuclear issue as India’s tough liability law has practically stalled the deal. Modi was “very very aware of the global business environment,” he said and knows India needs to engage with the US to regain its 89 percent growth rate from the current 4.4 percent.

OBITUARY

FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014

In a big blow to the week-long BJP government, Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde killed in an early morning road accident in Delhi; Nation mourns

An emotional adieu to Munde T IANS, NEW DELHI

he week-old government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was dealt a blow on June 3 when Gopinath Munde, a senior cabinet minister who looked after three portfolios, including rural development, died after an early morning road accident in central Delhi. Munde, 64, a senior BJP leader who was once deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, was going to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, to catch a flight to Mumbai, in his Maruti Suzuki SX4 car when he was hit by a Tata Indica on the Prithviraj Road fivepoint crossing around 6.20 a.m., police said. Munde’s personal security officer (PSO) was sitting in the front next to the driver and the minister was seated behind him. The Tata Indica hit SX4 with great force from the side where Munde was seated. Due to the force of the impact, Munde fell down in the car and was helped to sit up by his PSO. Munde asked for water and told his driver to rush him to hospital before losing consciousness. The minister died of “shock and hemorrhage”, according to the preliminary autopsy report submitted by AIIMS to Delhi Police. “In this case (it) is a shock and hemorrhage consequent upon blunt ante-mortem injuries to the neck and liver,” said the report that was submitted on June 3 night to Delhi Police. Amit Gupta said: “Munde was brought to the emergency department of Jai Prakash Narain Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS at 6:30 a.m by his personal assistant and driver. “Despite resuscitative measures, Munde could not be revived and was declared dead at 7:20 a.m.,” Gupta told reporters. “There were no grievous external injuries. It seems, he had a cardiac arrest after the impact,”

Gupta said, indicating the minister may have died of shock caused by the accident and internal injuries. Munde was a diabetic patient. Gurvinder Singh, 32, driver of the Indica car, was arrested. Police are checking whether he had consumed alcohol the night before. Munde’s death came a day after his name was mentioned as a contender for the post of Maharashtra chief minister after the assembly elections this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Munde as “a true mass leader” and said he was “extremely saddened and shocked” by the minister’s death. Besides rural development, the BJP leader also held the portfolios of panchayati raj as well as drinking water and sanitation — all crucial portfolios from the perspective of rural India. NEW DELHI: Union minister Gopinath Munde’s sudden death in a road accident has created a political vacuum for BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will now have to find a suitable replacement in crucial social sector ministries including rural development. A genial politician with friends across the political spectrum, the 64year-old Munde’s being tasked with portfolios of rural development, drinking water and sanitation and panchayati raj was considered appropriate in political circles for his grassroots connect, his accessibility and his understanding of problems of people in rural areas. It was an indication of Modi’s trust in the departed leader that the Prime Minister entrusted him with three portfolios, a privilege shared by Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu. During his college days, Munde met a sauve, soft-spoken young man, Pramod Mahajan, who coaxed him to join the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. While Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi became the state’s first Brahmin chief minister, Munde was made the deputy chief minister and home minister for the SS-BJP government’s full term before it was voted out in 1999. Police said that a search operation was underway at the property in north-west London. Speaking to DawnNews, London-based journalist Farooq Shah said Hussain has been arrested and the police were searching his house. DawnNews quoted the Scotland Yard as saying that the investigation would continue for 24 hours. ISLAMABAD: The port city of Karachi continued with its shutdown on June 4 in the wake of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s arrest for interrogation in London on June 3. Roads wore a deserted look, public transport was scant, petrol vends and shops were closed and a large number of MQM workers participated in sit-in protest, Dawn online reported. Protestors vowed to continue with the protest unless they heard Hussain’s voice. MQM workers in other cities of Pakistan also staged protests. Sri Lanka to release 29 Indian fishermen

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf chairman Imran Khan on June 2 said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was treated like a schoolboy when he visited India to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. By not meeting Hurriyat leaders in New Delhi, the PM had struck a bargain on Kashmir, Dawn online quoted Khan as saying. If Sharif could meet Indian leaders in Delhi, then why could he not hold a meeting with those representing the Hurriyat Conference, he asked.

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of 29 Indian fishermen arrested last week for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, media reported on June 3. The Indian fishermen were the first batch to be arrested since Narendra Modi took office as Indian prime minister last week. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy off Thalaimannar in the north of the country Saturday and handed over to the fisheries department.

elebrations broke out across Telangana as it came into being as the 29th state of India on June 2. ‘Jai Telangana’ rent the air as the region comprising 10 districts erupted in celebrations to mark the fulfilment of nearly 60-year-old dream of the people. Bursting of firecrackers, unfurling of the national flag, distribution of sweets and greetings marked the celebrations, which began midnight. Hundreds gathered at Gun Park near the state assembly building to pay their tributes to the martyrs of Telangana. Firecrackers, especially brought from Mumbai, were burst at several traffic junctions and the main roads in Hyderabad. Telangana protagonists took to the streets and were seen dancing to the tunes of popular Telangana song. Holding flags of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the party activists took to the streets on their motorbikes. Celebrations were held on a grand scale on Tank Bund and Necklace Road around Hussain

elangana’s first Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao on June 2 promised a corruption-free and transparent government with its top priority to work for the welfare of the poor and weaker sections of society. Addressing the main official function to mark the formation of Telangana state, he said the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government would be firm in dealing with political corruption. In his maiden speech after taking oath as the Chief Minister of the new state, Rao said Telangana state had become a reality due to the sacrifices of the martyrs of 1969 and the participation of all sections of

Reality is we have no points: Walsh THE HAGUE: India’s chief hockey coach Terry Walsh was left dejected after the team again conceded a late goal to go down 1-2 to England for their second consecutive defeat in the FIH Hockey World Cup here on June 2. Though India were the better of the two teams, he said the reality was they are yet to open the account. “I thought both sets of guys played well. India started off well but England went into the lead in the 27th minute after Mark Gleghorne converted a penalty corner. But the Indians were back in the reckoning within four minutes through Dharamvir Singh, who received a pin-point pass from skipper Sardar Singh and swung around to hit it straight into the net from the top of the circle. Till the 68th minute, the Indians did well and the match looked to be heading towards a 1-1 draw. But a foul by Gurbaj Singh gave England the winner from the penalty corner and Mantell scored from the rebound after Sreejesh had put on a brilliant effort to thwart the penalty corner shot. India were the livelier going forwards but England’s defense was resolute. India always threatened to score the spectacular goal, in fact they were forced to take shots that were either wide or easy for goalkeeper George Pinner to deal with.

wo-time former champions Argentina, loaded with some of the world’s top stars, are the clear favorites in Group F while debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina will be looking to make an impact in the 2014 World Cup. But the spotlight in the group will be on the star-studded Argentina. If they have to win their third World Cup title, a lot will depend on the quartet of Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain. Coach Alejandro Sabella has

brought some stability in the side since he took over from Sergio Batista after the team’s dismal show in the Copa America in 2011. They had an easy qualifying campaign, beat Colombia at home, won both the matches against Chile and had comfortable home victories against Uruguay and Ecuador. When Sabella took over, his first task was appointing Messi as the captain. It worked wonders for the Barcelona star. Messi, who had a dry spell in 16 matches before Sabella’s appointment, found his mojo and scored 20 goals in 21 games.

L

eading Indian tennis player Sania Mirza along with partner Cara Black bowed out of the French Open after losing their women's doubles quarter-final here on June 3. The Indo-Zimbabwean fifth seeds went down 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 in two hours to top seeds Su-Wei Hsieh (Chinese Taipei) and Shuai Peng (China) on Court No.1 to end the Indian challenge in the only clay court major. Both pairs failed to hold serve at least once in the match but the top seeds were two notches better, converting three break point opportunities to Sania and Cara's one. The tables turned in the second

set as Sania and Cara came out with the only two aces and only two winners to take points at crucial junctures. In the semi-finals, the victors will take on the winners of the match between Czech-Slovenian fourth seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik and unseeded Spaniards Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro.

Zarine Khan on a look out for ‘good work’

courts tricolor controversy A

ctress Zarine Khan, who was last seen in the Hindi film Housefull 2 in 2012, says she is taking her time in selecting projects as she wants to do some good work. “I am taking my time and doing good work,” Zarine, who made her Bollywood debut with Salman Khan starrer Veer, said at the launch of designer Amy Billimoria’s collection here. “You (audience) will soon see me on the screen. You have not seen me in Hindi film for long that does not mean I am not doing any film. Recently, my Punjabi film has released, which has done good business,” she said. Zarine’s upcoming Hindi projects include The Legend of Michael Mishra and Amar Must Die.

ctress Mallika Sherawat is no stranger to controversy. And she has once again kicked up a storm by appearing in a tricolor in the poster of her new film Dirty Politics. In the poster, Mallika is seen wrapped in the tricolor and sitting atop a car with a beacon, and it hasn’t gone down well with a political party from Rajasthan. But she is not the first one to get into trouble. Back in 2000, designer Malini Ramani also

Films bind, not divide: Big B on ‘Filmistaan’ MUMBAI: Debutant director Nitin Kakkar has received wide acclaim at international film festivals for Filmistaan that explores India-Pakistan relationships. Now megastar Amitabh Bachchan too has complimented him on his endeavours. “Filmistaan...the film on release. Cinema in its bountiful glory. Just saw it...films bind, they do not divide. Love is power,” Big B posted on his Twitter page. Filmistaan, starring actors like Sharib Hashmi, Inaamul Haq, Kumud Mishra and Gopal Dutt, won the best feature film in Hindi title at the 60th National Film Awards 2012, and it also won ‘The Silver Crow Pheasant Award’ for best debut film at the International Film Festival of Kerala.

dishonored the national flag. A few years later, actress and host Mandira Bedi’s attire came under fire when she chose to wear a flag-themed sari. While hosting one of the cricket matches, Mandira was seen wearing a sari that had national flags of all the countries, which participated in the tournament. There was an image of the tricolor that was apparently positioned in a disrespectful manner — below the knee. Tennis player Sania Mirza didn’t dare to wear the tricolor, but she found herself in the flag controversy, thanks to smart photography. Mirza was pictured sitting with her bare feet that appeared to rest on a table next to an Indian flag. As many saw this as an act of showing disrespect to the Indian flag, she had even thought of giving up playing tennis to show her respect to the flag.

Chalo Dilli a fresh film altogether: Lara Dutta MUMBAI: Actress-producer Lara Dutta is excited about doing a sequel to her debut film production Chalo Dilli, but says the new project will not be a continuation of the 2011 entertainer. “The sequel to Chalo Dilli will be a fresh film altogether and not a continuation. We have different characters in that,” Lara told IANS. Chalo Dilli, directed by Shashant Shah, features Lara and Vinay Pathak in the lead. Apart from the sequel, what should one look forward to from Lara on the work front? “There are multiple things happening right now...I am very excited about Chalo Dilli sequel. It will go on floors soon. “But I can’t talk about the other projects,” said the former beauty queen.

If you happen to be one of the multitude of faceless migrants, you are in for a really grueling time. Citylights is Hansal Mehta’s ode to the invisible people, those people populating the pavements we often see from our moving cars. Mehta zooms in on the life of one such family. He sucks us into their lives with such intensity and passion that we never can bear ourselves to come out of their world even when

The protagonist’s journey into the heart of darkness is immediate, and irreversible. What Mehta does is to show us the fatality and finality of lives thrust into the bowels of the city. Not that Mumbai is shown to be entirely lacking in kindness and compassion. Deepak and his wife encounter good people too. It’s not the people who are callous. It’s the daily grind that makes them selfcentred and uncaring. Gripping, glorious and unforgettable, it is a shattering, life-changing experience. —Subhash K Jha

Will Kapil Sharma make a fiction show? MUMBAI: From comedy to singing, acting, producing and composing — popular stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma has done it all. But if you ask him about trying his hands at fiction, he shows no interest. However, he does not rule out making a fiction-based show or being part of this some day in the future . “I have no interest in fiction because from the beginning I have been doing live shows, performing in front of the audience,” Kapil said here at the on-location shoot of the daily soap Sasural Simar Ka. “I am not comfortable with fiction, but you never know about future,” he added.

Kush Sinha to direct TV adaptation of Archer’s book

I’d love to do sports film: Sonakshi Sinha NEW DELHI: Actress Sonakshi Sinha, mostly seen as the traditional Indian girl on the screen, will be seen as a boxer in a sequence in A.R. Murugadoss’ forthcoming directorial Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty. She says “personality wise, the role is closest to me as possible”. There are not many leading actresses in the Hindi film industry who shed their “girly” look to play a strong sportsperson on the big screen. But Sonakshi, who has also studied fashion designing, has no qualms about essaying such roles. “I was interested in it immediately because I played sports in school and college. Personality wise, the role is closest to me as possible. It was like being myself on screen and doing what I love to do,” Sonakshi told IANS here. “I would love to do a film in the future where I can explore this facet a little bit more where I can play sports probably longer,” added the actress, known for serenading the big screen in saris-backless blouse or bright colored traditional attires with her curls left loose in movies. For the scene, in which she is seen as a boxer participating in an inter-college championship, she took some training from Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh and her co-star Akshay Kumar too gave her tips to prepare for the role. “Yes, I did (take training) but I’ve always been a sportsperson,” said the 26-year-old.

MUMBAI: Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s son Kush, who has assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is set to turn a fullfledged director with an Indian televised version of Jeffrey Archer’s political bestseller First Among Equals. The rights to film of the novel were bought by producer Sheetal Talwar at a reported `150 million. The series would be one of the most lavish and expensive to be produced for Indian television. Confirming this, Kush said: “Yes, I am doing Jeffrey Archer’s First Among Equals for television. It’s a layered subject with lots of depth and complexity. The story is adaptable for Indian tastes.”

TV actress Barkha Bisht plays gangster MUMBAI: The upcoming episode of crime-based show Encounter will feature TV actress Barkha Bisht as a gangster who uses her looks to get into the crime world. Barkha will be seen playing gangster Unnati. In the episode, Unnati with the help of her lover Ulhas, essayed by TV actor Behzad Khan, makes a mark in the underworld. The love story of the duo ends when Unnati’s insecurities and betrayal lead to the encounter of Ulhas, said a statement. “I said yes to the character as soon as I read the script. I play a seductress and it was very challenging for me. It was a very exciting experience for me to shoot for the episode of Encounter. I hope my fans love my work,” said Barkha. Hosted by actor Manoj Bajpayee, the show brings stories of encounters between Mumbai police and gangsters. Himanshu Malhotra will be seen as police officer Tilak Nambiar in the show and he said that the experience was “satisfying”. “The role was pretty intense and heroic,” he said.

Grayslake temple Satyanarayana Katha draws devotees BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- The Hindu Mandir of Lake County performed Samohik Satyanarayana Katha on May 31 with a huge gathering of more than 300 devotees of Indian communities who participated in the event with deep spiritual interest and zeal of belongingness to the temple family. Performing the ritual of Satyanarayana Katha, especially on a community level, seemed to have gained popularity in modern times because it is considered to have a beneficial effect on those who perform it with reverence and sincerity. This kind of group Puja builds sociability, closeness and harmonious relationships in the community and to overcome adversity, resolve problems, and difficulties in devotees’ lives as well. Temple priests Pt. Anil Joshi Ji and Ganesh Ji performed Ganesh pujan,

Kalasha Sthapan, and Satyanarayana and Laxmi pujan in a traditional manner by chanting Shree Narayana’s numerous names, making offerings of flowers, fruits, payers and home-made Prasadam. Devotees were given puja plates and performed the same pujas along with

priests as directed by Pt. Joshi Ji. Pt. Joshi Ji narrated the five chapters of Katha and stated in his Pravachan on ‘The Significance of Satyanarayana Katha in Kaliyuga’ that this is the only Puja and ‘Katha listening’ which is done by inviting all the family members, relatives, friends,

and neighbors to get the enlightenment and benefit of the Katha. Said Pt Joshi Ji: “ Once we submit ourselves to Shri Satya Narayan, who is the ultimate personified truth, we realize the temporary nature of our body and all the persons and things associated with it.” He stressed that listening to this Katha provided the best solution for ego problems and develop loving and helping nature in us. Melodious devotional songs sung by Rita Patel, Atul Soni, Vasu Choksi, and Vishwanathan and excellent Shlokas and practical advice by Pt. Joshi Ji kept the devotees captivated for more than two hours. Felicitation of Shri Natesiyer, Shri Rajagopalan, Shri Prabhakar, and Shri Ishwar was done by Pt. Joshi Ji and Pt. Ganesh Ji for their commendable services in making the recent Maha Rudram function a grand success by offering them beautiful turbans and Uttariyas

hicago (IL) -- Shreeji Dwar Haveli established by Vaishnav Samaj of Midwest (VSM), which has emerged as a thriving Hindu temple in the center of the Chicagoland area organized a fundraising dinner on June 1 at Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows, IL. The objective of the event to raise funds for the construction of the expanded Haveli building with well-planned facilities for kids, youngsters, youth and senior citizens. The Haveli, located at 440 W Fullerton Avenue, Addison, IL, which has been attracting a growing number of devotees from Chicago and Midwest area, is often unable to accommodate everyone during many occasions. For example, some 4,000 devotees participated in last year’s Chhappan Bhog event during the 5th Patotsav celebrations. Though it was liked and appreciated by everybody, there was a request from hundreds of devotees to expand the current facility. The current leadership of the VSM has plans to take the Haveli to a different level. An additional 30,000 square feet of construction has been planned to accommodate the growing congregation. Th VSM has already received approvals for a meeting point for senior citizens. Very soon, the Prasadam Kitchen will be inaugurated. It already provides education and inculcation of Hindu values to kids growing up in America. There is a plan to start Yoga classes shortly. The six-year-old Haveli, now the

PP Yuvacharya Vrjaraj Kumarji graced the occasion and gave a gripping discourse clarifying some of the issues raised by devotees. He gave examples of moving Shrinathji’s statue. Cops raise $9,400 for special Olympics BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO, IL-The Park Ridge and Niles police departments’ fund-raiser has produced a combined $9,400 for Illinois Special Olympics. Officers and other department staff perched on the rooftops of five area Dunkin Donuts shops for several hours on May 30 to encourage passersby to

make donations during the annual “Cop on a Rooftop” event. Park Ridge raised $4,440 at two locations and Niles took in $5,414 at three shops. The proceeds will go to Illinois Special Olympics, which raises money for athletes and promotes awareness of the event. “It’s one of the better things they can do to help out the kids,” said Park Ridge

resident Don Whittmann as he gave a donation outside the Dunkin Donuts at Touhy and Greenwood avenues. Above him, Police Chief Frank Kaminski stood on the roof, calling out to passing traffic with a bullhorn. OWA- The body of a 24-year-old youth, a native of India’s Bengaluru city, has been found in Des Moines, Iowa. Sachin Joseph Rayappa was found dead on May 30 in a tributary of the Mississippi river in a death that local authorities have ruled as not suspicious. The body was discovered by the Center Street dam in the early afternoon by a passerby who alerted the police. Emergency teams recovered the body, and are currently investigating the cause of death, as well as a possible motive. Rayappa had not reported to his job since May 27 when he came to the office in the morning before leaving abruptly in the afternoon. Rayappa reportedly left his wallet, cell phone, and laptop behind. Rayappa officially went missing on May 28 although his body was not found until nearly two days later. The two main motives being considered are accident and suicide. Given that Rayappa went missing, apparently of his own volition, just a few days before his death, it seems most likely a case of suicide. Rayappa originally hailed from Bengaluru where his father is a businessman. He originally came to the US to work as an accountant for Ernst & Young. He immigrated to Des Moines in December, after earning his B.Com. degree from St. Joseph’s Commerce College.

Coffee can W cheer you up

IANS, LONDON

Coffee is a great drink for the benefits it has. But excess caffeine comes with its own set of problems

hether it’s a latte on the way to work or an espresso to get through the afternoon slump, coffee has become a routine formula for several youths. However, think twice before sipping on it as it can also have some side effects. Health guidelines recommend a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine per day, but as there is caffeine in tea, chocolate and fizzy drinks as well as coffee, the intake often turns out to be more than required, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Sally Norton, consultant surgeon and weight loss expert at Spire, The Glen Hospital Bristol, weighs up the pros and cons of consuming caffeine:

PROS: It can improve sports performance: Drinking a caffeinated drink before a sport is associated with improved endurance and other sporting measures. It seems that caffeine increases heart rate but reduces the pain felt during exertion, encouraging us to push it that bit further. It can increase mental alertness: Studies performed on people in stressful conditions showed improved concentration, learning and reaction time after 200 mg caffeine. There is some evidence that it can delay onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It may reduce risk of some diseases: Drinking coffee is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. It is also associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancer. It may protect the liver: Fatty liver disease is becoming an increasing problem due to the combination of alcohol and obesity. Excess fat in the liver can cause inflammation and lead to cirrhosis. Some studies

Try navy in office to stay stylish in summer LONDON: Looking stylish and smart at work in summer can be a struggle. If you want to keep cool and be stylish, navy is the answer to your problems. Softer than black and a lot less predictable than grey, navy color for office is perfect for spring-summer as it can be paired with brighter hues like pink, red, yellow, orange, green etc. for a more season-appropriate look, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Even a navy Breton striped top will work well for the office. One can pair it with some navy cropped trousers, a pair of ballet flats and a bright tote for a look that’s smart but still stylish. Pair a floral jacket over a navy dress and heels for office meetings, or try a navy suit with a printed shirt and heels for a classic office look. So go and shop for your favorite navy pieces that are great to add style to your work wear wardrobe.

show that caffeine intake may be associated with a lower risk of fatty liver. Caffeine can cheer you up: Even just the smell of coffee can make you feel better and drinking it too is related to lower rates of depression. Not to mention the social element of relaxing with friends over a cuppa! CONS: It can be bad for your heart: Some studies show it can reduce blood flow in your coronary arteries when you need it most — during exercise, as well as cause palpitations or irregular heartbeat and may possibly increase your blood pressure over time. It disturbs your sleep: People who drink more than three cups of coffee per day are scientifically proven to have less than restful sleep. One study showed a difference of 79 minutes of sleep between drinkers of caffeinated vs decaffeinated drinks. It’s often linked with sugar: Even if we don’t add sugar to our coffee, we are often tempted to accompany it with a biscuit, cake or a breakfast muffin. In addition, there can be 11 teaspoons of sugar in some varieties. It’s bad for your mood: Caffeine increases catecholamines such as adrenaline, known as the “fight or flight” hormone. No surprise then that caffeine can make you tense and jittery in high quantities. It can impact your fertility: Drinking more than five cups of coffee a day could lower fertility. If you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s certainly worth cutting down on coffee, and once you are pregnant you’ll want to quit caffeine altogether or certainly cut back to less than 200 mg per day as it may increase the risk of birth defects or reduce fetal growth.

Hair trend 2014: Mid-length bob IANS, LONDON

T

he medium length bob is the hair cut of the season with celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Lea Seydoux, Rose Byrne and Jessica Alba wearing the look. Opt for the trend for fuss-free look. Whatever your hair type or texture, there’s a medium-length style to suit all occasions, from work to weddings. Not only is it an A-list favorite but it’s versatile and easy to style, says an expert “The midlength bob is seeing a revival of popularity this season, and is the per-

fect style for those who are trying either to grow out their hair, or opt for a longer style. It also is a subtle change for those who want to go for the chop but aren’t ready for a look that’s too dramatic,” femalefirst.co.uk quote stylist Nicola Bond as saying. “When asking your hairdresser to create this style, make sure it involves lots of layers to help encourage natural movement through the ends of the hair. Ideally, the perfect hair type for this style is fine or medium thickness hair,” added Bond. However, the trend is not great for naturally poker straight hair, or very thick hair which can create a triangular effect. If there is not a natural wave in your hair, try using a curling wand to create easy, long-lasting movement. Pippa Middleton is the latest celebrity who tried bob hair look and the hairstyle has done wonders to her.

Some of Sweden’s leading space engineers have invested years of their time and effort to realize the venture. The U.S. space technology company Astrobotic has committed to the challenge of taking the house to the moon. “The Moonhouse will enable people to make history and a mark on the international scene since it will be the first payload funded by private individuals to land on the moon,” John Thornton, CEO of Astrobotic, was quoted as saying. The launch is scheduled for October 2015.

This sprinter robot can beat Usain Bolt! LONDON: South Korean scientists have taken inspiration from the prehistoric Velociraptor dinosaur to create one of the world’s simplest and fastest robots — the Raptor. Raptor is capable of reaching a top speed of 46 km an hour which is faster than sprinter Usain Bolt — the fastest man on earth. The Raptor robot has two legs and a mechanism that works like a tail to balance it. Developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Raptor, while running on a treadmill, can outrace six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt whose maximum speed reached 43.92 km an hour. The robot uses carbon/epoxy composite legs, which resemble the running blades used by amputees, for more durability.

S

o you all along thought you followed only real people on Twitter? Know now that automated accounts called “bots” can infiltrate the defenses of the social networking site and emerge influential too, an experiment showed. Automated bots not only can evade detection but also gather more than double an average user’s followers and become influential among various social groups. “Over the 30 days during which the experiment was carried out, 38 out of the 120 ‘socialbots’ were suspended,” Carlos Freitas from Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and his colleagues, who let the “socialbots” loose on Twitter, were quoted as saying. It means 69 percent of the socialbots evaded the defenses set up by Twitter to prevent automated posting. The researchers made the profile, defined their gender and a few followers to start off with, some of which were other bots. The bots generate tweets either by reposting messages that others have posted or by creating their own synthetic tweets using a set of

rules. During the experiment, the 120 socialbots received a total of 4,999 followers from 1,952 different users. And more than 20 percent of them picked up over 100 followers, more followers than 46 percent of humans on Twitter. The researchers also monitored the Klout score (an online service

‘We find that the socialbots achieved Klout scores of the same order of several well-known academicians’ that measures the influence of Twitter accounts) of each of their socialbots to see how they fared. “We find that the socialbots achieved Klout scores of the same order of (or, at times, even higher than) several well-known academicians and social network researchers,” the researchers added. It is a finding that may have significant implications for certain types of groups on Twitter, MIT Technology Review reported.
