game changer as “a dubbed Telugu language film became the biggest Hindi language blockbuster of all time”. “It really says a lot to everyone who works within Hindi cinema. It says that we can’t make any excuses. Baahubali, in conventional terms, had everything going against it. The Hindi audience has traditionally not looked at southern stars as appealing and those
who featured in Baahubali had no name recognition in the Hindi market. “Dubbed movies were always considered to be weaker at the box office because of the fact that they were not in the original language. But Baahubali has come and dispelled all those myths,” Kapur told IANS. Largely, it boils down to the fact that “if you give people a cinematic experience and have the confi-

dence and the gusto and the flair to be able to tell that story uninhibitedly in the way you want to tell it, then the audience will come and watch the film,” Kapur added. As far as Bollywood originals are concerned, nine films marched past the Rs 100 crore benchmark in a year when the central government introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) — for tickets below Rs 100, it stands at 18 per cent and for tickets above Rs 100 at 28 per cent. Tiger Zinda Hai turned out to be the highest grosser among Bollywood originals with a collection of Rs 206.4 crore till December 28. Even the team of Reliance Entertainment-backed Golmaal Again laughed its way to the bank with a collection of Rs 205.67 crore. There were others — Raees (Rs 137.71 crore), Kaabil (Rs 103.84 crore), Jolly LLB 2 (Rs 117 crore), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (Rs 116.68 crore), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (Rs 134.22 crore), Judwaa 2 (Rs 138.61 crore) and the latest, Tiger Zinda Hai (Rs 173 crore and counting). Tubelight, though not counted among Salman’s hits, also went past the Rs 100 crore mark by minting Rs 119.26 crore. According to Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures, Tubelight was one example of how “stars on their own are not enough to pull in audiences”. “See Salman in Tiger Zinda Hai. It’s an established franchise but also a film with a strong nationalistic flavor and content that’s appealing to a broad section of people. It has been a respite at the box office, but see the same Salman in a long and slow film like Tubelight, which was not suitable to the actor’s image,” Gianchandani told IANS.

he year 2017 could be said to be one of mixed fortunes for the Indian space agency as it launched the much-awaited fourtonne rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mk III (GSLV-Mk III); put into orbit 104 satellites in a single mission; sent up the South Asia Satellite; and also crossed the double century mark of launching foreign satellites. With the size of earth observation satellites reducing and the future trend moving towards a constellation of small satellites rather than a large one, India’s space agency is developing a smaller rocket that can carry satellites weighing up to 500 kg. But on the negative side, India’s long-due satellite navigation system (NavIC) faced serious problems with the atomic clocks in a couple of satellites developing problems. The clocks are important to provide precise locational data. The mission to put into orbit a replacement for the first of the seven navigation satellites didn’t succeed as the lighter Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) failed

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) had a great start with a record satellite launch and good going for the major part of the year but wound up 2017 smarting after an unexpected disaster. In February India set a world record in the number of satellites
launched in a single mission by successfully putting into orbit 104 satellites, including the country’s own Cartosat-2 earth observation satellite. This was followed by the copy book-style launch of the South Asia Satellite, intended to serve “economic and developmental priorities” of South Asian nations, using its heavier GSLV-Mk II rocket. From the first observations of a merger between two faraway neutron stars to stunning discoveries of a number of exoplanets in the habitable zone of a nearby star and the continued march of China as a serious space player, this year has had plenty of memorable developments to excite scientists and the public at large. Marked as the “breakthrough of the year” by the journal Science, the merger of the two neutron stars 130 million light years away gener-

One of the unique aspects of the South Asia Satellite is that ISRO decided to have electric power for it — without cutting down on the volume of traditional on-board fuel — to check its performance for use in future satellites. In May, India scored a double success, launching its latest — and

‘My nuclear button bigger’ I have a nuclear button that is ‘much bigger’ and ‘more powerful’ than North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, tweets US President Donald Trump IANS, WASHINGTON
P
resident Donald Trump has declared that his nuclear button is “much bigger” and “more powerful” than North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s after the latter threatened the US about Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities. “North Korean leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the ‘nuclear button is on his desk at all times.’ Will someone from his depleted and food-starved regime please inform him that I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” Trump tweeted this week. Trump’s tweet was the latest contribution to the increasingly personalized feud between the nuclear-armed leaders. Kim in his annual New Year’s Day address had warned Washing-

Trump will ‘go to great lengths’ to stop Pak aid: Nikki Haley UNITED NATIONS: US President Donald Trump will go all out to cut off aid to Pakistan if it continues to back terrorists, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley has warned. “The President is willing to go to great lengths to stop all funding for Pakistan if they continue to harbour terrorism,” she told reporters here this week. “The administration is withholding $255 million in assistance to Pakistan” because its “double game” of working with US at times and with terrorists at

others “is not acceptable to this administration” she said. “We expect far more cooperation from Pakistan in the fight against Nikki Haley terrorism,” she added. In her meeting with the media to outline the US priorities for 2018, Haley mentioned Pakistan’s terror ties as the third area of concern after Iran and North Korea. — IANS
that this is not a threat but a reality,” he said. Kim had also expressed a desire for a peaceful resolution with South Korea. Responding to Kim’s attempt to mend ties with Seoul, Trump said the potentially warm
gesture... from Pyongyang was “perhaps” good news, “perhaps not”, and referred to “sanctions and ‘other’ pressures” on North Korea. Trump’s unorthodox words warning Kim sent social media into a frenzy. Several argued that Twitter should not allow “calls for nuclear war” to be broadcast on its platform. Some people said the tweet should qualify as a violation of Twitter’s policy prohibiting threats of violence. But Trump’s supporters defended him, saying that Kim, as a dictator responsible for global instability and widespread suffering of his own people, deserved to be insulted. They said the US President’s comments were both “factually accurate and showed American strength and resolve”. Trump’s statements came on the same day South Korea proposed to hold a high-level meeting with North Korea.
Will cut off aid to Palestinians: Trump WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has raised the prospect of cutting off aid to the Palestinian territories unless its leaders agree to resume negotiations to broker a peace deal with Israel, the media reported. “We pay the Palestinians hundred of millions of dollars a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel,” Trump tweeted. “We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” Trump’s tweets came after he became the first sitting US President to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, drawing protests from Palestinians and causing Palestinian leaders to reject the US’s role as central negotiator.
‘Islamabad should do more to fight terrorism’ IANS, WASHINGTON
A
day after the Trump administration confirmed suspending $255 million of military aid to Pakistan for “harboring terrorists”, US Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Islamabad should do more to fight terrorism. Addressing the press at the White House, Sanders said the actions being taken against Islamabad were a follow-up to Trump’s South Asia policy announced last year.
“The President outlined a new strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia in August. At that time, he laid out (a policy) and said Pakistan is not fulfilling its obligations,” she said. “The President is simply following through on a commitment that he made (...) we know Pakistan can do more to fight terrorism and we want them to step up and do that.” Asked if there was any particular incident that prompted the US President Dinald Trump’s tweet on
Pakistan, Sanders said: “This is something that the President has been following and has talked about back during August when he laid out his Afghanistan and South Asia strategy. “And this is something the administration continues to watch on a daily basis,” she said.
Killing of US soldier stiffens Trump’s resolve on Pakistan IANS, NEW YORK
A
ngered by the killing of an American soldier by terrorists in Afghanistan, US President Donald Trump let off the first Twitter salvo of 2018 bringing into sharp focus Washington’s $33billion problem of Pakistan and Islamabad’s ties to terror and antiAmerican activities. Trump’s warning also tests the limits of Washington’s influence and power to make Islamabad give up its use of terrorists as proxy. “No more,” Trump ended his New Year morning tweet on Pakistan that also took a swipe at his predecessors, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, for “foolishly”
Trump’s warning also tests the limits of Washington’s influence and power to make Islamabad give up its use of terrorists as proxy.
aiding Islamabad which thinks of US leaders as “fools”. “They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan,
with little help,” he tweeted, accusing Islamabad of lies and deceit. On Tuesday, the administration’s hawk, Permanent UN Representa-
tive Nikki Haley, emphasized Trump’s resolve. “The President is willing to go to great lengths to stop all funding for Pakistan if they continue to harbour and support terrorism,” she declared. If the timing of his 6.12 a.m. tweet on New Year’s Day while the country was barely awake after the midnight celebrations seemed a puzzle, the provocation was revealed later when the US commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, announced the death of the soldier in Nangarhar province, which borders Pakistan. Trump’s “No more” declaration is a restatement of what was already underway — in August the administration had notified Con-
gress that it was withholding $225 million in military aid to Pakistan. Yet, as with all Trump’s actions, it is a transactional ploy in the style of a businessman and “no more” isn’t the final, irrevocable mandate it would appear. Trump had stepped back once already. In August, he said Pakistan has “much to lose” by harboring terrorists and his administration announced it was holding back aid. But in October after Pakistanis got a US citizen released from Haqqani captivity, Trump tweeted: “Starting to develop much better relations with Pakistan and its leaders. I want to thank them for their cooperation on many fronts.”

Triple talaq bill hits RS roadblock The opposition wants the bill to be referred to a Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he deadlock on the triple talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha continued on Thursday with the opposition insisting on its reference to a Select Committee for detailed scrutiny and the government rejecting the demand. With no agreement, the government placed the bill in the bottom of priority in the list of business, which the opposition strongly objected to and demanded that its motions for referring the bill to a Select Committee be taken up immediately. As Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien pleaded helplessness on the ground that the listing of business was the government’s priority and decided to go ahead with a bill on GST, opposition members created an uproar, forcing him to adjourn the House for the day. It now remains to be seen whether the government lists the Muslim Women (Protection of

Earlier, the opposition wanted the Chair to put the motions
moved by Congress leader Anand Sharma and Trinamool Congress member Sukhendu Shekar Roy for reference of the legislation to a proposed Select Committee be put to vote immediately. They contended that before the
House adjourned on Wednesday, a division was to be taken and so the Rajya Sabha should pick up the thread from where it was left. After some discussion, the two sides agreed to conduct a shortduration discussion on the econo-
my and take up the matter regarding triple talaq bill after that. After Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s reply to the discussion, the opposition returned to its demand for a vote on the two motions. Jaitley, who is also Leader of the House, raised questions over the validity of the two motions saying the statutory requirement of 24 hours advance notice was not given and that the proposed committee was not representative in character. Citing earlier rulings, he said a parliamentary panel has to represent the character of the House and be a “microcosm of the House”. Jaitley also said the work of a Select Committee was to improve a bill and a “saboteur” cannot be a part of the panel and as such was disqualified to be a part of it. Intervening, Sharma said even when he had moved the resolution on Wednesday he had said in writing that the names of BJP and NDA MPs could be included in the proposed panel.

akistan on Thursday released a video in which alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav claimed he was not tortured in custody and accused an Indian diplomat of “yelling” at his mother and wife after they met him last month. He also thanked the Pakistan government for letting him meet his mother Avantika and wife Chetankul in Islamabad on December 25. “This gesture was a positive one... “The absurdity of a captive under duress certifying his own welfare while mouthing allegations of his captors clearly merits no comment.” Kumar added: “Pakistan is best advised to fulfil its international obligations, whether it pertains to consular relations or UNSC resolutions 1267 and 1373 on terrorism and to desist from continuing violations of human rights of an Indian national.” The death row convict is heard saying in the video released by the Pakistan Foreign Office: “The Indian person or diplomat accom-

minor boy was killed in Nanded and several people were injured in Mumbai in sporadic incidents of violence which paralysed large parts of Maharashtra during a 10-hour shutdown called by Dalit parties on Wednesday. The ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ call was given by Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh and other parties, ironically, to protest against Monday’s riots leading to the death of a youth from Nanded in KoregaonBhima in Pune district. the victim’s body has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of the death.
The family of the deceased alleged that the youth — Yogesh Prahlad Jadhav — was seriously
injured during police caning to clear a road block. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said all the incidents of violence across the state shall be probed and appropriate action will be taken against the offenders. Dalit activists squatted on rail tracks, shouting slogans and waving flags to block train services in the city and suburbs of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. Security forces ejected them. Despite the hiccups, the Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour Line managed to operate services and cleared the rush of stranded commuters. Long-distance trains were not affected.

P
akistan Defense Minister Khurram Dastagir on Wednesday rejected the notion that the country has acted against Hafiz Saeed due to pressure from the US, saying that all action against the Mumbai terror attacks mastermind was under the ambit of the country’s own anti-terror operations. Pakistan’s financial regulatory body on Monday banned Saeed-led Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) from collecting donations, according to a media report. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) prohibited the collection of donations by the JuD, the front organization of banned outfit Lashkar-eTaiba, as well as several other such organizations named in a list of banned outfits by the UN Security Council, the Dawn reported. Dastagir, in an interview with BBC Urdu, said that although a number of organizations have been banned internationally, Pakistan
Deadly winter storm batters Europe LONDON: At least three people were killed as winter storm Eleanor swept across Europe causing widespread disruption, leaving thousands of homes without power and bringing transport links to a halt. Two people drowned on Spain’s northern Basque coast on Wednesday after being swept away by a huge wave and a skier was killed by a falling tree in the French Alps, the BBC reported on Thursday. For the first time, the Dutch authorities shut all five of its major sea barriers. Two later reopened. Gusts of more than 110km/h were recorded at Amsterdam airport where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Fifteen people were injured in incidents across France and winds of up to 147km/h were recorded. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower was closed because of the strong winds. Parks were also shut. In Switzerland, strong wind blew a train carriage off its tracks, injuring eight people. Some 14,000 homes in the country were left without power and record wind gusts of 195km/h were recorded near the city of Lucerne. Several people were stranded in a ski lift in St. Gallen canton. would assess the situation and take steps accordingly. “Action against Jamaat-ud-Dawa is being carried out in light of a well thought out strategy for a safer Pakistan where terrorists are never able to gun down school children ever again,” Dastagir said. Saeed is accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that left over 160 people dead, including foreigners.
Discussing the recent rift between Pakistan and the US, the Defense Minister termed Trump’s tweet as a “point of view”. “Instead of learning counter-terrorism from Pakistan, the US is cursing us,” he said. He added that there had been positive dialogue between Pakistan and the US in the past few months but the relationship was given “a negative color on the public level”. In his first remarks since the demonstrations erupted on last Thursday over the country’s economic policies, Khamenei accused the nation’s enemies of “joining forces” against Iran and blamed them for the violence in recent days, the BBC reported. “The enemy is waiting for an opportunity, for a flaw, through

Khamenei did not make clear exactly who he was referring to, but Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier slammed US President Donald Trump for tweeting his support for the protestors on Monday. Nine people, including a child, died overnight in violence in central Iran, the state media said. Some 450 people have been arrested in the last few days for “destroying public property and attacking people”, said Deputy Governor of Tehran province Ali Asghar Naserbakht.

The announcement comes a day after Seoul proposed high-level inter-Korean talks on January 9 to discuss North Korea’s possible participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics slated to be held from February 9 to 25, and ways to improve ties. But Ri did not specify whether the country would accept Seoul’s offer for the talks. Nineteen-year-old Arshad Vhora was filling in for his father — who was in India to attend a wedding — at the gas station in Dolton, Illinois, when the attempted robbery took place, ABC 7 Chicago reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, 55-year-old Bakar Saieed, was taken to a hospital and is in serious condition. The business is family-owned and operated and the victims were related, though it was not immediately clear how, Chicago Sun-Times said, quoting Dolton Police chief Robert M. The study would be done in 25,000 Kerala households spread over all the 14 districts and the first results would emerge in April,” Irudayarajan told IANS. Rajini to float party, resets TN politics The superstar’s party would field candidates in 234 Assembly seats in 2021; decision on 2019 Lok Sabha elections later n a decision that could redraw Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, superstar Rajinikanth accused political parties of “looting” the people and vowed to form a new outfit to pursue “spiritual politics” and contest the next Assembly election. After two decades of uncertainty, the 68-year-old bus conductor-turned-heartthrob of Tamil cinema told cheering fans here that his decision, which drew varying reactions from different political outfits, was a “compulsion of time”. Alleging that politics in the country had gone “very wrong”, Rajinikanth said in Tamil: “Under the guise of democracy, political parties are looting their own people.”
Such a system needed to be changed. The hugely popular actor said his party — he did not name it — would not contest the upcoming local body elections due to lack of time to prepare but would field candidates in all the 234 Assembly seats in 2021. A decision on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls would be taken at an appropriate time, he said. In a clear attack on the ruling AIADMK, Rajinikanth said the happenings in Tamil Nadu in the past one year - since Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa died in December 2016, leading to splits in the party -- had made the state a laughing stock. He urged his legion of fans not to talk about politics or comment about other parties till his party was floated. Some said this could happen on Pongal
day on January 14. Born into a humble Maratha family as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, Rajini — as he is popularly known — became a bus conductor after doing odd jobs as a coolie and carpenter. Once he took to Tamil filmdom, there was no looking back. Tamil Nadu warmly embraced him, never seeing him as an “outsider”, and Rajinikanth became an icon in Tamil film industry, his movies running to packed houses. The Rs 26 crore deal he signed for the movie Sivaji (2007) then made him the highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan. For his fans, he was a demi-god. Last week, Rajinikanth said his first task would be to get many of his unregistered fan clubs affiliated with the parent body.
Rajini launches website for political change
‘Honest, secular politics is spiritual politics’
Actor seeks Karunanidhi’s blessings for his journey
CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth, who made waves by plunging into electoral politics, this week launched a website and an app inviting people to sign up in his campaign to bring about a political change in Tamil Nadu. Even as established political parties by and large appeared to play the wait-and-watch game, Rajinikanth uploaded a one-minute video extending New Year greetings and thanking all those who supported his entry into politics. “I have created a web page — www.rajinimanram.org — where members of my registered fans associations and unregistered associations and people who want a good change in Tamil Nadu’s politics can register with their names and voter ID to coordinate ourselves. —IANS
CHENNAI: Tamil movie superstar Rajinikanth said honest and secular politics is “spiritual politics” and Tamil Nadu, where he wants to bring about major changes, was the land of several revolutions. After Rajinikanth said he will float a new party and pursue “spiritual politics”, many have commented that he was being fronted by the Bharatiya Janata Party and that “spiritual politics” was nothing but rebranded Hindutuva. At a meeting with journalists, he said many revolutions have started in Tamil Nadu including Mahatma Gandhi’s decision to wear only dhoti and a shawl at Madurai in 1921. The actor declined to comment on the name of his proposed party. —IANS
CHENNAI: Tamil movie actor Rajinikanth met DMK President M.Karunanidhi to seek his blessings. Speaking to reporters here after meeting Karunanidhi, he said he had informed the DMK patriarch about his starting a political party and got his blessings. The actor said he greeted Karunanidhi for the New Year and also enquired about his health. Speaking to reporters, DMK leader M.K.Stalin termed the meeting between his father and the actor as nothing surprising. Stalin said Rajinikanth had requested a meeting with Karunanidhi and as per the tradition of this land, his request was acceded to. He added that Rajinikanth also met Dayalu Ammal, Karunanidhi’s wife. —IANS

India to launch 31 satellites from Sriharikota on January 10 FAKIR BALAJI, BENGALURU
I
ndia will launch 31 satellites, including the earth observation spacecraft Cartosat on January 10, from its spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, an official said last week. “We have tentatively scheduled the rocket launch at 9.30 a.m. to carry Cartosat and other satellites, including 28 from the US and five other countries in a single mission,” Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Director Devi Prasad Karnik told IANS here. The first space mission in 2018 onboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C40) comes four
months after a similar rocket failed to deliver the country’s eighth navigation satellite in the earth’s lower orbit on August 31.
“The sixth Cartosat in the second series and other satellites are integrated with the rocket at the spaceport.
The mission launch board will decide the rocket’s lift-off time for the reverse countdown two days ahead,” said Karnik. The mission’s payload will also include one each nano and micro satellite from India, besides Cartosat-2. As an observational satellite, Cartosat will beam high-quality images for cartographic, urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation and utility management like road network monitoring. The previous two satellites in the Cartosat-2 series were launched on June 23 and February 15, from the spaceport on the east coast, about 90km up Chennai. As a follow-on mission, Cartosat
will also relay high resolution scene specific spot imageries with data from its panchromatic and multispectral cameras operating in time delay integration mode. The space scientists are taking special measures to ensure the 44.4 meter rocket will sling the 720kg Cartosat and other satellites oneafter-one into their intended orbits. “The August 31 mission suffered a setback when the 320tonne workhorse launcher (PSLVC39) did not separate the heat shield to deliver the spare satellite in the Indian Remote Navigation Satellite Series (IRNSS-H) from its cone-shaped top-end,” recalled another official.

2017 in Retrospect
India goes digital
E-commerce sector rides on Digital India, note ban More than computer-based Internet penetration and broadband extension, the growth of smartphones and the 4G network rollout made e-tailing popular FAKIR BALAJI, BENGALURU

dopting disruptive technology and riding on the Digital India bandwagon, the e-commerce sector has survived the slowdown in 2017 and benefited from the note ban, which spurred online transactions. More than computer-based Internet penetration and broadband extension, the record growth of smartphones and the 4G network rollout made e-tailing popular even in secondary cities and towns across the country thanks to easy and quick access to information and data on products and services. “In the growing e-commerce business, e-tailers like Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal have led the growth, with more customers shopping online than ever before in the digital space,” a market analyst told IANS. Though e-tailing accounts for 2.5 percent of the retail trade, its advantages are making more people buy groceries, vegetables, fruits, eggs,

meat and fish online from BigBasket, Fresh to Home, Nature Fresh and Grofers sites in metros like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, NCR and Pune. “As commuting through heavy traffic and finding a place for park-
ing becomes difficult, we are hardpressed for time to shop offline. It’s easy and cheaper to order and get what we need — and at discounted prices than relying on hard bargaining,” said homemaker P. Susheela in the city’s southeast suburb. Not to be left out, popular eateries like KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, SubWay and a host of Indian food joints have extended their services online, with dedicated portals
for orders, payments and delivery on time. “Growing consumerism, disposable incomes, changing lifestyles, extended work hours and social gatherings have made ordering food from outside common as it saves time and is made easier by multiple e-payments,” the analyst said. Though demonetization disrupted the economy and caused hardship to millions of people using cash, the controversial move acceler-
ated digital transactions and spawned a plethora of e-payment gateways. Digital payments firm Paytm unveiled its e-commerce arm Paytm Mall in February and wooed customers to use its gateway for buying even offline via its omni-channel from retail chains like Big Bazaar, Spar, and other supermarkets. The Unified Payment Interface (UPI) of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) also helped to spawn scores of state-run and private digital payment channels across the country and benefited e-commerce players in other sectors like B-2-B, B-2-C and government services. Online payments were made more acceptable through state-run BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) and Bharat QR code for scanning and paying. Online access to global brands and products across verticals have given an opportunity and choice for netizens to decide what and when to buy from home or office and commuting or travelling outside. “The e-commerce retail market is estimated to be $12 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) terms. Sales rose 40 percent due to smart deals and huge discounts offered to lure consumers into online shopping,” said a marketing research official. Electronics continues to be the favorite in e-tailing, accounting for 47 percent of e-sales, followed by apparel with 31 percent e-sales. According to a report by global professional services firm KPMG, online spending, including domestic and cross-border shopping, is set to grow 31 per cent annually to $136 billion by 2018.

The Supreme Court will be quoted not just for its verdict expanding the scope of the Right to Life by including within its ambit the sacrosanct Right to Privacy, but it will also be counted for its pronouncements that instant triple talaq was unconstitutional and sex with a minor wife in a child marriage amounted to rape. It was viewed by some as the collegium throwing down the gauntlet for the executive, which is insisting on a provision in the Memorandum of Procedure (on appointments) that it can block a recommendation on the ground of national security but without elaborating on this. All this apart, there is hardly an area impacting the life of the common people that escaped the top

The top court also approved the setting of 12 exclusive courts to fasttrack the trial of 1,571 pending cases against lawmakers. In addition, it prohibited the registration of vehicles that do not meet BS-IV emission standards from April 1, 2017, banned the use of pet-coke and furnace oil in the National Capital Region and, above all, stopped the sale of fire crackers during Diwali celebrations — a step which earned it both laurels — for relatively less polluted post Diwali morning — and brickbats, with some equating the ban on the sale of fire crackers as an assault on the Hindu religion. The top court also came to the rescue of home buyers deprived of their rightful dwellings years beyond the due date by the big real estate companies.

pposition parties face a daunting task to check the BJP’s rise and expansion under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the coming year presents them opportunities to do so in eight states that go to the elections, also testing their ability to build up the momentum against the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Much will depend on the Congress Party’s performance in these state polls, as also the initiatives that its new President, Rahul Gandhi, takes in reaching out to other opposition parties.

over the past over three years, there is already talk of “collective leadership” in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and suggestions against making it a presidential-style electoral contest against Modi. The year saw 18 opposition parties coming together to put up common candidates for the presidential and vice presidential elections. But these parties, which included the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) did not come together for the Gujarat assembly polls which the Congress narrowly lost. The 18 parties came together after the Uttar Pradesh elections that the BSP and the Samajwadi Party-
Congress alliance fought separately and lost badly to the BJP. Opposition parties, specially in states with multi-polar contests, have competing interests and any proposal to put up common candidates against the BJP in 2019 elections will need a lot of accommodation and hard work. The Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party are seen as adversaries in Uttar Pradesh and the Left, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The Congress is an adversary of the Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana, of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti in Telangana and of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha.

Golden year for Indian space In February, India set a world record in the number of satellites launched in a single mission by successfully putting into orbit 104 satellites, including Cartosat-2 earth observation satellite VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI
T
he year 2017 could be said to be one of mixed fortunes for the Indian space agency as it launched the much-awaited fourtonne rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mk III (GSLV-Mk III); put into orbit 104 satellites in a single mission; sent up the South Asia Satellite; and also crossed the double century mark of launching foreign satellites. The mission to put into orbit a replacement for the first of the seven navigation satellites didn’t succeed as the lighter Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) failed

in its mission. The year also saw India taking steps towards opening up the sector for private players as the government sought comments on its Draft Space Activities Bill.
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tasked ISRO to
develop a satellite for use by the SAARC countries. But Pakistan declined the use of an India-developed satellite. One of the unique aspects of the South Asia Satellite is that ISRO decided to have electric power for it — without cutting down on the volume of traditional on-board fuel — to check its performance for use in future satellites. In May, India scored a double success, launching its latest — and
heaviest so far — 3,136 kg GSAT19 communication satellite with its brand new and heaviest GSLVMk III with a cryogenic engine. While Indian space scientists named the 640 tonne rocket “fat boy”, the Telugu media nicknamed it “Bahubali” as, like the hero in the massively successful film lifts a heavy Lingam, it carried the heaviest satellite by an Indian rocket. The month of June saw ISRO completing yet another multiple satellite launch, putting into orbit the Cartosat satellite, Nano satellite NIUSAT and 29 foreign satellites from 14 countries. In the process, ISRO crossed the double century mark in launching foreign satellites. India started launching foreign satellites in 1999. The June month also saw India adding GSAT-17 to its fleet of communication satellites after it was launched into orbit by the heavy-lift rocket Ariane 5 from Kourou in French Guiana. And there ended the tale of ISRO’s success for 2017. The last day of August turned out to be a black Thursday for ISRO as it suffered a serious setback after its PSLV rocket failed to deliver India’s navigation satellite in its intended orbit.

In February, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope revealed the first known system of seven Earth-sized planets around a single star — the TRAPPIST-1 star — an ultra-cool dwarf located at about 40 lightyears from Earth. The researchers determined that three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

WOMEN POWER: From Chanu to Sindhu Mirabai Chanu became the second Indian woman to win gold at the world weightlifting event while Sindhu extended her status as India’s leading shuttler VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI

W
eightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is among the new breed of sportspersons from a tiny state, Manipur, which has a population less than three million. Chanu is the world champion in the 48 kilogram category, only the second Indian woman to win a gold medal at the worlds after Karnam Malleswari who won not once but twice, in 1994 in Turkey and in China in 1995. Women’s weightlifting was introduced at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal when she snatched the bronze. Malleswari winning a medal in the 54 kg category was no news, the surprise was that she could only get the bronze. The expectations of her winning the gold were high as she entered the event as two-time world champion. In her illustrious career, the woman from Andhra Pradesh won 29 international medals, 11 of them golds. Seeing Chanu’s triumphant smile, the commentators at the Anaheim Convention Center in California were as ecstatic as she and the Indian camp were. One of them said “she would go home and get rockstar status” and the other chimed in: “She better, she

Chanu knew she was sure of getting silver after her final lift of 109 in clean and jerk because the other girl in contention for the gold was Thailand’s Sukcharoen Thunya, the reigning Asian and junior world champion. Mirabai did her customary Namaste and left the arena pleased with her what she thought her silver performance. An admirer of seven-time world silver mediallist Kunjarani Devi, Chanu knew if Sukcharoen successfully lifted 109 kg, she would have settle for the silver, having lifted a kilo less than the Thai in snatch.
ndian badminton in 2017 continued to move northwards, dishing out one stunning performance after another, especially with the men’s shuttlers earning respect on the global stage. While P.V. Sindhu extended her status as India’s leading shuttler, the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, H.S. Prannoy and B. Sai Praneeth left their mark on the circuit, even as Saina Nehwal, now a veteran, battled her way to a World Championship bronze. Saina, 27, struggled with her consistency and fitness but the 2012 London Olympic bronze medallist fought against time and went on to clinch the BWF World Championship bronze medal along with the Malaysia Masters, proving her doubters wrong and ending debates on her future. Recuperating from her career-threatening knee ligament surgery after the 2016 Rio Games, Saina showed signs of improvement at the Premier Badminton League (PBL), which the Sindhu-led Chennai Smashers won in January 2017. Diabetes drug could treat Alzheimer’s disease LONDON: Scientists have found that a drug developed for diabetes could be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease through a triple method of action. The drug, originally created to treat type 2 diabetes, “significantly reversed memory loss” in mice, a paper published in the journal Brain Research, said. Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and has been implicated in the progression of the disease. Lead researcher Professor Christian Holscher of Lancaster University, said, the treatment “holds clear promise of being developed into a new treatment for chronic neurode-
generative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease”. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. As per Alzheimer’s Society — a care and research charity for people with dementia and their carers — the numbers are expected to rise to two million people in Britain by 2051.
More than 90 percent of the births took place in less developed regions.
Next month, Unicef will launch “Every Child Alive,” a global campaign to demand and deliver affordable, quality health care solutions for every mother and newborn. These solutions include a steady supply of clean water and electricity
at health facilities, presence of a skilled health attendant during birth, disinfecting the umbilical cord, breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the child.
Zinc level in lungs linked to COPD IANS, TOKYO
J
apanese researchers have found that abnormal delivery of zinc to lung cells contributes to obstructive pulmonary diseases, a collective term for refractory respiratory diseases with chronic airway inflammation and excessive mucus retention that are accompanied by airway obstruction. The findings, published in the journal EbioMedicine, also suggest that treatment for these diseases cannot be performed merely with zinc supplements. The study by researchers at Kumamoto University in Japan showed that there could be abnor-
mality in the zinc transport mechanism itself in obstructive pulmonary diseases. A therapeutic approach that takes the zinc transport mechanisms into consideration is, therefore, neces-
sary, according to the research. Obstructive pulmonary diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that presents with chronic bronchitis or pulmonary emphysema, and cystic fibrosis (CF), an intractable hereditary disease characterized by mucus retention and chronic bacterial infection. A main cause of COPD is cigarette smoke. The onset and progression of the disease is caused by transporter proteins that allow ions to permeate ion channels into cells. COPD is thought to involve the overactivation of the epithelial sodium ion (Na+) channel (ENaC).

dvances in medical sciences last year brought good news for humanity at large. The year also paved the way for heralding a new age of care for premature babies with scientists from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in the US successfully building an artificial womb that could keep premature lambs alive and help them develop normally, marking a breakthrough in treating premature babies. embryos. Further, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) termed its approval of the first gene therapy a “historic action” which could usher in a new approach to the treatment of cancer and other serious
and life-threatening diseases. Gene therapy has been there for some time with the first such therapy getting approval in China way back in 2013. Two gene therapy drugs also became available in the
European countries subsequently. However, they have not got much traction, especially in Europe, for commercial use so far. The FDA approved Kymriah (tisagenlecleucel) — a geneticallymodified autologous T-cell immunotherapy — for certain
pediatric and young adult patients with a form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Each dose of Kymriah is a customized treatment created using an individual patient's own T-cells, a type of white blood cell known as a lymphocyte. Digital technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) also stepped into healthcare in 2017 helping mine medical records, design treatments or find ways to discover drugs faster. The US FDA also approved in November the first digital pill — Abilify MyCite — with a digital ingestion tracking system that can tell doctors whether the medication was taken. It has an ingestible sensor embedded in the pill that records that the medication was taken.

‘Baahubali’ sets $80 million bar for B’wood
‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ is a dubbed Telugu language film that became the biggest Hindi language blockbuster of all time RADHIKA BHIRANI AND SANDEEP SHARMA, MUMBAI
T
he highest earning film in India this year — Baahubali 2: The Conclusion — was neither an original Hindi movie nor featured an established star. That says a lot about the changing dynamics of Bollywood which, in 2017, saw a mixed bag of projects that drew audiences mainly with solid content, notwithstanding star power. Salman Khan’s Tubelight, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Jagga Jasoos are cases in point. They failed to elicit the expected response despite the buzz — falling flat in such a way that Salman and
Shah Rukh reportedly compensated the distributors for the losses they incurred due to their movies. There is no centralized agency to record Bollywood’s box office numbers. But as per trade experts, while no Bollywood film has so far managed to cross the Rs 400 crore mark at the domestic box office, S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali 2: The Conclusion — featuring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati and Anushka Shetty — did the unexpected by minting Rs 510.99 crore (nearly $80 million). Siddharth Roy Kapur, President of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India, says Baahubali 2: The Conclusion — the sequel to hugely successful fantasy drama Baahubali: The Beginning — was a

game changer as “a dubbed Telugu language film became the biggest Hindi language blockbuster of all time”.

B
ollywood actors and producers got caught in the ‘web’ amidst the proliferation of digital platforms, the number of producers hopping on to the web-series bandwagon and the variety and quality of stories capable of being told sans censorship. “For us, as actors, it’s about the story and the character, not so much about the medium,” said Rajkummar Rao of his web-series debut with Bose: Dead/Alive. Like him, a string of actors and filmmakers who chose to give the medium a try — not just to tap into the youth audience, but also to give creativity a boost. IANS takes a look at those who

gave a shot to web-series in 2017: “Bose: Dead/Alive”: If he lost weight for a film like Trapped,
Rajkummar Rao made no bones about gaining an extra 10 kg and going half bald for his role as Indi-
an nationalist Subhas Chandra Bose. The ALTBalaji series is based around the mystery of his death, and has been lauded for its production value. “Inside Edge”: The first Indian original series for Amazon Prime Video — one of the OTT majors — the curiosity level for Inside Edge was palpable from its cast, which includes names like Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadha, Angad Bedi, Tanuj Virwani, Sayani Gupta, Sanjay Suri and SarahJane Dias. “Social”: Baahubali star Rana Dagubatti chose to explore the digital platform with Social, a HindiTelugu bilingual series launched by Viu. With Rana playing a business tycoon, it revolves around a miss-
ing girl and the four people who set out to solve the mystery. “The Test Case”: Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, this ALTBalaji series brought Nimrat Kaur, Juhi Chawla, Chandrachoor Rai, Rahul Dev and Atul Kulkarni to the digital series world. “Romil and Jugal”: The series explores homosexuality, and touches the controversial waters of showing a gay relationship. It features talent like Mandira Bedi and Suchitra Pillai. “Spotlight”, “Twisted” and “Maaya” : Filmmaker-producer Vikram Bhatt launched his own web series channel VB On The Web with the three shows releasing simultaneously.

New low with high tide of controversies From ‘Padmavati’ to Kangana’s nepotism remark, 2017 has been a roller-coaster ride for Bollywood NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI
W
hether it was the protest against filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati (it might release as Padmavat) that resulted in the film’s release date being pushed to uncertainty, actress Kangana Ranaut tagging filmmaker Karan Johar as a “flagbearer of nepotism” or singer Sonu Nigam facing a backlash for calling azaan “forced religiousness” — Bollywood had enough controversies grabbing headlines in 2017. IANS lists Bollywood’s biggest controversies of the year: Padmavati: This Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial raised controversy after the Karni Sena, an orga-
nization of the Rajput community, urged a nationwide ban on the film claiming that it “distorts historical facts”. Bhansali also appeared before a Parliamentary committee and maintained that the row over the yet-to-be released movie was just based on rumors, strongly rejecting charges that he had distorted “historical” facts about the possibly mythological Rajput queen, played by Deepika Padukone in the film. Kangana Ranaut vs Karan Johar: One of the most fearless and outspoken actresses in Bollywood, Kangana called filmmaker Karan Johar a “flagbearer of nepotism” on his own chat show. It not just sparked a debate about the prevalence of nepotism, but snowballed
(Clockwise from top left), Karni Sena members protest against filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming film Padmavati, actor Kangana Ranaut and movie S Durga actors Khanan Nayar and Rajshree Deshpande. (Photos: IANS)
into a bigger controversy when Karan and actors Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan poked fun at Kangana and chanted “Nepotism rocks” at the IIFA Awards event in the US. They later apologized for their act once it attracted widespread criticism. Sonu Nigam and the azaan: Renowned singer Sonu Nigam
lashed out at “forced religiousness” in India after being woken up by the azaan (Islamic call to prayer) from a mosque. In a tweet, he said: “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India?” After the brouhaha that ensued, he even shaved off his
hair in reaction to a maulvi’s supposed call to have his head shaved for a Rs 10 lakh reward. IFFI’s non-screenings: S Durga, a Malayalam movie, was dropped from a jury-suggested shortlist of the Indian Panorama section of the IFFI along with another film Nude, triggering controversy.
Newcomers who made an impact in Bollywood IANS, MUMBAI
T
he year just-ending was not great for new talent. Unless we look at Mahira Khan as new talent. And that would be as calamitous as giving Diljit Dosanjh the best debutants award in 2016 for “Udta Punjab”. So, who were the newcomers to really make an impact this year? Martin Rey Tangu in Tubelight: Salman Khan’s 10-year-old co-star in Kabir Khan’s Tubelight absolutely stole the show from the superstar. Natural and unspoilt, Martin would have been the perfect fit for Salman’s role. Sajal Ali in Mom: Three Pakistani actresses made an impressive Bollywood debut in 2017. While it would be unfair to describe the
seasoned Mahira Khan and Saba Qamar as debutantes in Raees and Hindi Medium respectively, Sajal Ali playing the great Sridevi’s traumatized daughter was a relative newcomer on both sides of the border.
Martin Rey Tangu, Ashish Bisht and Plabita Borthakur. (File Photos)
This year, we needed new talent to come in from other parts of the world. That’s show shortstaffed our cinema was in 2017. Ashish Bisht in Shab: Playing Raveena Tandon’s toyboy in Onir’s
study of love, sex and heartbreak, Bisht brought in a sense of innocence and desperation to his role. There is hope here. Plabita Borthakur in Lipstick Under My Burkha: She threw off the burqa to indulge in a spot of shoplifting in this overrated film. God knows what the director was trying to probe. But young Plabita proved a point. Khushmeet Gill in Sniff: As the young Sardarji from Amole Gupte’s film whose sense of smell is gone, Khushmeet was a natural born scene-stealer. Aadar Jain in Qaidi Band: Easily and hands-down the best male discovery of 2016, Aadar who belongs to the illustrious Raj Kapoor’s ‘khandaan’, played the wrongly convicted jailbird with tremendous empathy warmth and feeling. Anya Singh in Qaidi Band: She had one breakdown sequence in
the courtroom where Anya proved she had the potential to be the new-age Jaya Bhaduri. Producers starved of leading ladies, please take note. Svar Kamble in Chef: The third debutant child actor of the year to make an impact. Playing Saif Ali Khan’s son, this young performer revealed rare intelligence in handling complex scenes. Barun Sobti in “Tu Hai Mera Sunday”: The TV actor made a telling impact in a role of a dogooder who is unable to do good for himself. Strangely, this superb film and its capable performers made no impact at the box-office. Parvathy in “Qarib Qarib Singlle”: By far the most accomplished Bollywood debutante of the year. But then Parvathy was not new to excellence, having proved her mettle in Malayalam movies.

Indian exec held for money laundering BY A STAFF WRITER cosmetics company executive in Southern California has been charged with transferring more than $1 million in company funds into his personal accounts, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said. Indian American Ranjeet Reddy Paladugu, vice president of finance for Urban Decay, was charged on December 7 with felony grand theft and money laundering, as well as sentencing enhancements for aggravated white-collar crime and property loss of more than $200,000. NRS—a catalyst for growth of retailers
BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ – National Retail Solutions (NRS), operator of one of the nation’s fastest-growing point-of-sale (POS) networks for independent retailers, has said that 2,000 retailers in the New Jersey and New York market now rely on its POS terminals. The Newark, NJ-based company has installed terminals with over 4,000 retailers nationwide. Elie Katz, CEO of NRS, said, “Bodegas (small grocery stores) and other independent retailers are hungry for tools to help them compete against the large retail chains and big box stores. Our POS platform helps Mom-andPop stores to increase sales, cut costs and operate more efficiently.” Independent retailers are essential to the economic well-being of many downtown commercial centers, supporting the multicultural communities that live in and work nearby. In many towns, almost every other corner has a bodega featuring daily necessity items, hot foods, phone cards and everything in between. These iconic stores, often family-owned, are struggling to compete with larger supermarkets and C-store chains because they lack the market power necessary to negotiate deals with product companies, to be able to lower costs for their

customers. NRS’s POS network provides retailers with access to exclusive negotiated offers, coupons and discounts on popular brands and ethnic specialty products. These promotions are powerfully presented in display terminals at check out and are marketed to over 3.2 million nationwide members of NRS’s popular BR Club rewards program. The POS terminals also provide merchants with tools to control costs, optimize inventory
and process transactions efficiently. “This NRS POS system is unique. Its state-of-the-art technology provides us with many features that help us improve the quality of our business,” said Felix Motta, an NRS retailer and owner of Morris Foods in Morristown. “For years, major brand suppliers have sought more effective ways to market to innercity consumers. This large and diverse consumer segment typically purchases consumables from local, independent, ethnically-focused neighborhood stores,” said Eli Korn, VP of NRS. “Through our platform, consumer product companies can market to both urban consumers and the independent retailers who serve them, with targeted promotions, coupons and POS advertising.” Over 4,000 independent retailers rely on the NRS POS Network to boost sales, lower Costs and improve operations. NRS operates a POS terminal-based platform for independent retailers and bodega owners nationwide. The platform provides a robust portfolio of tools to help these retailers compete more effectively including rewards programs, consumer coupons, wholesaler discounts, and integration with Boss Revolution® communication and payment service products.

Driver charged in fatal car smash
Mohammed Ali
BY A STAFF WRITER ALLEJO, CA -- A 22-year-old man, possibly of South Asian origin, who killed a rookie California Highway Patrol officer on Christmas Eve after slamming his car into the back of the officer’s parked patrol car, was charged on January 2 with second-degree murder. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley identified Mohammed Ali, of the San Francisco Bay Area city of Hayward, as the driver of the speeding Cadillac that drifted off Interstate 880 and crashed against Officer Andrew Camilleri’s patrol sports utility vehicle (SUV). Camilleri was killed in the crash. His partner, Jonathan Velasquez, who was in the driver’s seat, was treated at a hospital and released. O’Malley said Ali, who has been hospitalized since the December 24 wreck, was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs and driving more than 100 mph. After his release from a hospital, Ali will be booked into the Santa Rita Jail. The Cadillac was seen weaving in and out through traffic before it crashed into the patrol vehicle, according to court documents. Ali allegedly admitted to CHP to being under the influence of both alcohol and drugs, specifically marijuana.

BY A STAFF WRITER REENFIELD, WI- The U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Gregory J. Haanstad, Dec. 18 announced that an Indian American couple, Manish Patel and his wife Nikita Shukla, have been sentenced to prison for their roles in an impersonation scheme that scammed 780 people. Patel and Shukla, both 26, were sentenced to prison Dec. 14, with the former receiving 38 months behind bars and the latter getting a 366-day sentence. Additionally, Patel is to pay $1,101,901.61 and Shukla $149,531.28 in restitution for committing wire fraud, the attorney’s office said in a news release. According to the plea agreements and other court documents, unknown members of the scheme located in India called victims and made material misrepresentations to them, which caused the victims to send an electronic interstate money transfer to a specific location and to a specific, fictitious name. The documents said that, using 134 different fraudulent identifications, Patel picked up $1,101,901.61 in fraud proceeds in 1,081 transactions, from 780 victims from Sept. 28, 2016, through May 10, 2017. It added that Shukla aided and abetted the scheme by driving Patel to pick up $149,531.28 in fraud proceeds from 100 victims.
G
When the couple was arrested in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Patel and Shukla possessed 147 fraudulent driver’s licenses with fake names and Patel’s photo in them. Authorities also found $21,672 in cash in the car. One misrepresentation that the callers made was that they were from the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and that the individuals, who are legal immigrants, had to pay for new passports or other items in order to avoid being sent to jail or deported, the documents said. The callers made numerous other misrepresentations to the many victims of this scam, the attorney’s office said. Patel and others possessed fraudulent driver’s licenses that included the fictitious names of the MoneyGram recipients, but contained a photo of themselves. They used the fake IDs to pick up MoneyGrams throughout the country. According to court documents, Patel frequently picked up several MoneyGrams a day from various locations using fraudulent driver’s licenses. The attorney’s office added that, for at least part of the scheme, Shukla drove Patel throughout the country, including in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The couple were allowed to keep a certain percentage of fraud proceeds, but then deposited the remaining cash into various bank accounts or handed the cash off to unknown individuals, it said.

‘Be Jersey Strong’ students honored ‘Killer’ couple to be in jail without bail
BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- New Jersey state Sens. Republican Kip Bateman, and Democrat Loretta Weinberg on December 7 presented a bipartisan resolution in honor of students who spanned the state to help family, friends and neighbors connect to health coverage. The honored students were part of statewide non-profit, Be Jersey Strong, which trains student volunteers as community health workers who then, in turn, can promote a culture of health within their respective neighborhoods. Be Jersey Strong, led by Indian American Dr. Aakash Shah, launched in 2015 and trained more than 500 volunteers in a three-month span. Two-thirds of the volunteers speak a second language--50 languages in total--and come from 20 campuses across New Jersey to inform individuals about their health insurance options, according to a news release. “I am grateful to the student volunteers of Be Jersey Strong for their efforts,” Weinberg said in a statement. “They are a positive force in New Jersey’s communities.” The nonprofit became one of the largest and more diverse efforts to connect the uninsured to

‘Dirty’ Indian doctor may lose license BY A STAFF WRITER AST BRUNSWICK, NJ- The medical license of Indian American doctor Sanjiv Patankar has been suspended temporarily for allegedly reusing single-use catheters into multiple patient’s rectums. Patankar, an East Brunswick-based colon and rectal surgeon, allegedly washed and inserted disposable one-use anal catheters on multiple patients during medical procedures. The state Board of Medical Examiners suspended his license last week saying he “placed patients in clear and imminent danger.” According to the state officials, Patankar’s office ordered only five catheters between January 1 and November 30 last year whereas he performed 82 procedures in the same period. “The catheters are meant to be thrown

away after a single use, but Patankar used them on at least five patients before
discarding them because supplies for replacement catheters were on backorder,” said a statement issued by the office of the Attorney General. The decision to suspend his license was taken by the medical board after considering the hearing and the documental evidence submitted to validate the allegation. “It is appalling that a doctor would engage in such an unsanitary and dangerous practice,” Attorney General Christopher Porrino said in the statement. Anal catheters are used to insert into a patients rectum for various purposes, including inserting fluids or gathering fecal matter for testing. Patankar’s license will remain temporarily suspended pending a full hearing in the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) on the allegations against him, and until the Board takes final action based on the OAL’s findings.

Doctor pleads guilty to sex offenses
Arun Aggarwal
BY A STAFF WRITER AYTON, OH -- Former Dayton Children’s Hospital physician Arun Aggarwal has pleaded guilty to four counts of gross sexual imposition. Aggarwal, an Indian American pediatric gastroenterologist, had previously pleaded not guilty to allegations that he improperly touched two teenage female patients. “Between December 23, 2013, and November 10, 2014, the defendant inappropriately touched teens during medical examinations,” said a statement released by the office of Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck . “The inappropriate touching was not a medically necessary part of the examination.” Samuel Shamansky, Aggarwal’s attorney, on December 21 said the plea agreement between his client and the county calls for a 10-month sentence, with credit for the four months he has been in jail awaiting trial. When he gets out, Aggarwal, who is in the US on a work visa, will voluntarily return to his native India if he is not deported. Aggarwal also could face financial sanctions of up to $5,000 on each count and a prison term of 18 months on each count.

Ravi Bhalla sworn in as Hoboken Mayor
3
Indian man kills wife, hangs self from tree
Vinny Loknath & Stacy Singh
BY A STAFF WRITER OBOKEN, NJ -- Indian American (43) Ravi Bhalla, who made a history by winning the election, was sworn in on January 1 as mayor of Hoboken, NJ, the first Sikh mayor in the state. However, Bhalla, the 39th mayor of Hoboken, didn’t use the occasion to just celebrate his historic election win. Instead, he used it as a platform to let community members and wouldbe visitors to the Mile Square City know that his city is friendly to all. As his first order of business as mayor, Bhalla signed an executive order declaring his city “fair and welcoming,” in what appears to be a direct response to President Donald Trump’s
H
Ravi Bhalla administration. The 12-page order says no city employee can ask any individual about their citizenship or immigration status; bars federal immigration agents from accessing municipal facilities or databases; and establishes a Fair and Welcoming City Commission that will focus on immigrant issues, among others. “Hoboken we know and love was built by immigrants and today is sustained by immigrants,” Bhalla said in a statement. “This first executive order is a reflection of our quintessential American values and sends an unmistakable message that Hoboken is a place that welcomes all who are ready, willing and able to contribute to our great city.”
Bhalla signed the order with many local officials, including Hoboken police chief Ken Ferrante, looking on. Ferrante will issue a police directive to implement the policies set forth in the order. Bhalla succeeds Dawn Zimmer, who did not seek re-election and supported Bhalla on the campaign who fought back as the target of racially charged fliers. Bhalla said he hopes to be the “infrastructure mayor,” especially in the mass-transit sector. Approximately 58 percent of the city’s residents use public transport on a daily basis. He said he hopes to add more frequent bus and train lines, and to make ferry travel to New York less expensive.
Tougher procedure for green card applicants BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -Immigration to the US has become a difficult task for people from across the world under the Trump administration. It is a common practice among the Congress members to help immigrants deal with the government when they face any difficulty while applying for green card or citizenship. But it will become a hard task for the Congress members to help immigrants as the government is going to put new restrictions in the process. According to media reports, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will demand additional forms, certified translations and notarized signatures from people
W
while applying for green card or citizenship. This was revealed in an email sent by the agency to the congressional staffers on December 18. Advocacy groups have raised their voice against the move by the agency saying that the administration is trying to put more restrictions
in place. Rejecting the allegations, the USCIS said that the move is to protect the privacy of the applicants. When the new restrictions come into effect, it will increase the paperwork of the congressional office ultimately leading to a slowdown in the green card processing. According to Ronald Atkinson, the acting chief of USCIS’ legislative affairs office, the move is to “help both USCIS and Congress handle inquiries in a more efficient and effective manner, while also protecting sensitive information.” But, activists and advocacy groups allege that the agency is trying to put additional restrictions for making the process difficult in the pretext of protecting the interests of the applicants.

BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- Just hours after a Queens couple rang in the New Year, the wife became the city’s first murder victim of 2018—and her abusive husband hanged himself from a tree in a city park. Authorities were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide after the bodies were discovered about three hours apart on New Year’s Day, the police said. Stacy Singh, 26-year-old mother of two small children, was stabbed repeatedly in the back and left face-down in the couple’s Richmond Hill home on 103rd Ave. near 113th St. A knife was found near her body when the police arrived around 2 pm. Her hard-partying husband Vinny Loknath, 46, committed suicide just after 11 am in Forest Park, 1.5 miles from the murder scene, and was found hanging from a tree in the park. Loknath “was very abusive to her,” said the dead woman’s brother-in-law Romain Shaw. “She stayed with him no matter what because they had two kids together. She was hoping for him to change, but he never did. According to Shaw, Loknath was drinking heavily and using cocaine when family members gathered on New Year’s Eve at a Queens restaurant. A neighbor said the couple fought constantly, recalling one incident that ended with the battered wife leaving their home in an ambulance. The couple had a 5-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter. The neighbor described Loknath as a construction worker often seen sitting on the front stoop of the house, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer.

Obesity-related
diseases to cost India heavily Experts believe India will witness an annual medical cost of $13 billion by 2025 for treating diseases like diabetes and cancer IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he annual cost of treating the consequences of obesity such as heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, depression and many types of cancer will reach a staggering $13 billion in India by 2025, according to a new experts estimate. The global annual medical cost of treating these serious consequences of obesity is expected to reach $1.2 trillion per year by 2025, data from the World Obesity Federation released this week showed. In India, the annual cost of treating these consequences is esti-
mated to reach $13 billion or cumulative costs of $90 billion between now and 2025. The percentage of Indian adults living with obesity is set to jump to around 10 percent (3.1 percent male and 6.9 percent female) by 2025 from 7.5 percent (2.3 percent male and 5.2 percent female) in 2014, the new analysis revealed. The data demonstrated how investing in the prevention, early intervention and treatment of obesity is a cost-effective action for governments and health services. Investment can also help in achieving the 2025 targets set by the World Health Organization to halt
the rise in obesity The and to achieve a percentage 25 percent relative reduction of Indian in mortality obese adults from various is set to jump non-communicable diseases. to 10 percent “Obesity is by 2025 now a worldwide epidemic which absorbs a vast amount of our healthcare resources. The annual medical costs of treating the consequences of obesity such as diabetes and heart disease is truly alarming,” said Ian Caterson, President of World Obesity Federation.
Penicillin allergy may raise infection risk in patients
Antibiotics for tooth pain risky?
NEW YORK: Surgical patients with recorded penicillin allergy may be at 50 percent higher risk of developing infections, new research has found. The study, which is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, indicates that preoperative penicillin evaluation could effectively reduce surgical site infections in these patients. “This study has direct clinical significance,” said lead author Kimberly Blumenthal from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the US. The researchers noted that 40 percent of health-care-related infections in hospitalized patients occur
ntibiotics prescribed by dentists may contribute to the growing problem of Clostridium difficile (C. diff) — a serious and potentially deadly infection that causes severe diarrhea, says a study. Dentists write more than 24.5 million prescriptions for antibiotics a year. And many of those antibiotics are likely unnecessary, the researchers said. Antibiotics kill bad and good bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Wiping out the protective bacteria can allow the growth of C. diff bacteria — one of the top three most urgent antibiotic-resistant
at the site of surgical incisions, and such infections can lead to complications and even death, also increasing health care costs. The researchers reviewed the medical records of almost 8,400 patients who underwent common surgical procedures at the MGH from 2010 through 2014.

threats that is identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Dentists have been overlooked as a source of antibiotic prescribing,
which can potentially delay treatment when doctors are trying to determine what is causing a patient’s illness,” said lead author Stacy Holzbauer, from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). “It’s important to educate dentists about the potential complications of antibiotic prescribing, including C. diff. It is essential that they be included in efforts to improve antibiotic prescribing.” In the study, presented at IDWeek 2017 in California, the team interviewed 1,626 people with community-associated C. diff between 2009 and 2015. Of those, 926 (57 percent) reported they had been prescribed antibiotics, 136 (15 percent) of those for dental methods.
Breast cancer tied to bacterial imbalances IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have found that the bacterial composition of breast tissue of healthy women are different from that of women with breast cancer. The study published in the journal Oncotarget showed that healthy breast tissue contains more of the bacterial species Methylobacterium, a finding which could offer a new perspective in the battle against breast cancer. Bacteria that live in the body, known as the microbiome, influence many diseases. Most research has been done on the “gut” microbiome, or bacteria in the digestive tract.
But researchers have long suspected that a “microbiome” exists within breast tissue and plays a role in breast cancer but it has not yet been characterized. In this study, the research team
Bacteria that live in the body, known as the microbiome, influence many diseases from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, US, took the first step toward understanding the composition of the bacteria in breast cancer by uncover-
ing distinct microbial differences in healthy and cancerous breast tissue. “To my knowledge, this is the first study to examine both breast tissue and distant sites of the body for bacterial differences in breast cancer,” said co-senior author Charis Eng, Chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute. “Our hope is to find a biomarker that would help us diagnose breast cancer quickly. We hope we can use microbiomics right before breast cancer forms and then prevent it with probiotics or antibiotics,” she added. The study examined the tissues of 78 patients who underwent mastectomy for invasive carcinoma or elective cosmetic breast surgery.

n-demand services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are leaving no stone unturned to increase their Indian subscriber base. Their library of movies and shows forces you to binge-watch. So do TV channels with their marathons, but don’t let watching shows or movies back-to-back be the reason for your expanding waistline, warn experts. Excessive screen time is a concern across the world, says Ramen Goel, Senior Bariatric Surgeon and Director, Center of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals. “There are multiple associated health issues with people, especially the younger generation constantly glued to the phone, monitors or TV. It restricts the time for physical activities which are essential for not only physical health but

also social health, camaraderie and team-building,” Goel told IANS. Subconscious eating while watching screen-based programmes is a fact. “It is an accepted contributor to an obesity epidemic,” he said. Sushant Wadhera, Advanced

Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon in Venkateshwar Hospital, Dwarka, agrees that sitting idle for long in front of screens lowers the metabolism of the body. “In fact, your body burns more calories while sleeping than during watching TV. Eating a lot of snacks
Excessive screen time is believed to distract a person from the realities of life and many live in a makebelieve world created by movie producers and game developers more weight gain,” he added. Binge-viewing has affected all age groups. From children glued to their cartoon channels to housewives and elderly people watching their unending soaps, bingewatching has become common, feels Swapnil Jain, Endocrinologist, Columbia Asia Hospital,
Gurugram. “Since almost all of the available time is being consumed in front of the screens, the only muscles getting exercise are probably the eyeballs. So, the mismatch of excessive calorie intake and binge-viewing is severely affecting the body metabolism leading to obesity,” added Jain. The problem doesn’t end with obesity. “Once they get obesity, they develop diabetes, heart and kidney problems much earlier in their lives. Technology also interferes with sleep,” said Manjunath Malige, Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. Sharing a case study, Malige said once a 14-year-old boy became so obese that now he has pre-diabetes. “The kid was addicted to gadgets. So, he was not involved in any physical activities,” said Malige. As for the younger lot, parents have to play an important role in helping their children get rid of their habit.
Keep acne at bay Snapchat could be NEW DELHI: No matter how much you want them to go away, one must avoid going over the top with home remedies to make acne go away, and not touch the affected area, say experts. Shikhee Agrawal, Head Training, The Body Shop, and Kiran Lohia, Dermatologist at Lumiere Dermatology, share some tips on how to fight acne. l Many times acne is caused by internal imbalances, especially with your hormones. Blood tests and ultrasounds can help rule out anything that is causing acne from within. Problems within your gut can also cause acne through a pathway called the “gut-skin axis”. To stop this, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, pre and pro-biotics. Also, avoid dairy and high glycemic foods as they worsen or create hormonal imbalances. l Do not be too harsh with your skin. Many think that acne is simply an overproduction of oil and they can scrub it dry with harsh soaps and exfoliators. The truth is that overly-dry skin can make acne even worse. Acne is an inflammatory process
that causes a lot of redness and swelling; the harder you scrub, the more likely you will damage your skin leading to marks and worsening irritation. Also, do not pick at your pimples, this will only result in marks. l Stay away from home remedies. Acne takes a long time to treat, 3-6 months to be exact. It can also get worse before it gets better because acne from underneath the skin rises to the surface as part of the healing process. People get impatient and try home remedies like lemon, toothpaste, or garlic on zits. These things can actually burn your skin! Warm and cold compresses are okay. Otherwise you should look into a safe, sulfur-containing spot treatment. l Opt in for the perfect cleanser. It is important to exfoliate your skin not excessively but 2-3 times a day. If the skin has enough moisture it doesn’t secrete its own oil. l Moisturize your skin frequently. Your skin needs to be moisturized regularly to keep the outer layer of the skin properly hydrated and leave it feeling soft and supple. —IANS

t a time when people struggle with a seemingly diminishing attention span, Snapchat could be the best form of communication but its overuse could make you addictive, researchers say. “For certain people, Snapchat enables them to overcome communication apprehension by using a different means of communication where they do not have a threat in
their face. At the same time, there are people who are addicted to it,” said graduate student J.J. Delacruz at Texas Tech University. For the study, researchers recruited students in the College of Media and Communication through the department’s Sona survey system, where students earn extra credit in certain classes for participating in online surveys. They also administered the survey to those who responded to requests through TechAnnounce — the offi-
cial email announcement/communication method for Texas Tech University — totalling almost 500 students altogether. The survey asked students who use Snapchat about their reasons for using the medium, including needs and motivations. It also asked about general social media use motivations.
‘I am a proud Indo-Caribbean girl’ IANS, MUMBAI
N
ew-age designer Masaba Gupta has been trolled and been called names like “B*****d child” or “illegitimate West Indian” for supporting the ban on firecrackers but the new age designer says that she is a product of two legitimate personalities and is a proud Indo-Caribbean girl. Masaba — the daughter of actress Neena Gupta and cricket legend Vivian Richards — on Wednesday, took to her instagram to share an open letter. She wrote: “Recently, I re-tweeted in support of the Firecracker ban by the Supreme Court and like

every other issue in this country, big or small... The trolling and bashing began. “By calling me names like
‘B*****d child’ or ‘illegitimate West Indian’ only makes my chest swell with pride.” “I’m the illegitimate product of two of the most legitimate personalities you’ll find and I’ve made the best life, both personally and professionally... Out of which I am proud of.” The designer added that she is “immune” to this as she has been called these names since she was 10. “My legitimacy comes from the work I do and what my contribution to society has been. And you can try but you will not be able to raise a single finger on either of the two,” she added.
