17 killed in Florida shooting, gunman held

IN BRIEF Trump’s lawyer ‘paid $130K to porn star’ WASHINGTON: A long-time personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump has said that he paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to a porn star who once claimed she had an affair with the President a decade before he took office. “In a private transaction in 2016, I used my own funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to Stephanie Clifford,” Michael Cohen said.

t least 17 students and teachers were killed as a heavily-armed 19-yearold went on a shooting spree outside and inside his former high school in Florida state in the US, authorities said. The shooter was arrested an hour later. The horrific violence unfolded on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, which ironically was voted Florida's safest city last year. The gunman, armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, was

identified as Nikolas Cruz, who had been expelled from the school for “disciplinary reasons”, the New York Times reported. Students huddled in horror in their classrooms, with some using their phones to share the massacre on social media. Footage showed sprawled bodies, screams and gunfire that began with a few shots and then seemed to go on and on. The murderer was arrested at Coral Springs, a neighboring city, about an hour after fleeing the scene. He had slipped out of the building by mixing in with crowds of panicky students.

In addition to the rifle, Sheriff Israel said Cruz had “countless magazines”. The gunman had clearly prepared for the attack, Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said after speaking to the FBI. Police said they did not know the gunman's motive. The shooting, among the 10 deadliest mass shootings in mod-

ern US history, revived debate over gun control while American politicians offered their condolences. “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school,” US President Donald Trump said in a statement.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has stopped the release of a Democratic memo that seeks to undercut Republican claim that the FBI misused its powers in conducting the Russia probe. The White House informed this on Friday and said the Democratic memo contained several classified passages. It said Trump “will not release the memo at this time, and has sent it back to the House Intelligence Committee for changes”, a CNN report said. — IANS

Trump unveils $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan IANS, WASHINGTON

Trump’s NASA budget focuses on Moon with an eye towards Mars

U

S President Donald Trump has released a longpromised $1.5 trillion infrastructure initiative, aiming to rebuild the nation’s outdated roads, railways and other public works. The 53-page document detailed Trump’s plans of how to fund the investments, shorten project permitting time, remove regulatory barriers, help rural areas and improve worker training. “Our Nation’s infrastructure is in an unacceptable state of disrepair, which damages our country’s competitiveness and our citizens’ quality of life,” Trump was quoted as saying. Trump ran for president in 2016 on the promise of a $1 trillion infrastructure updating plan and vowed to make it happen in his first 100 days in office. The plan, however, was delayed because of health care issue and a tax cut bill. Trump met with several governors and state and local officials at the White House to ratchet up support. As the federal government owns little infrastructure across the country, the Trump initiative handles decision making authority to state and local governments. “This will be a big week for Infrastructure,” Trump tweeted this week. “After so stupidly spending 7 trillion in the Middle East, it is now

WASHINGTON: The 2019 budget estimate for NASA announced by the Donald Trump administration this week puts the agency on a path to lead the return of Americans to the Moon with a goal to send humans to Mars. Nearly half of the proposed $19.9 billion budget — $10.5 billion — is earmarked for “an innovative and sustainable campaign of exploration and lead the return of humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and

utilization followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations,” according to a NASA overview. “In short, we are once again on a path to return to the Moon with an eye toward Mars. NASA is called to refocus existing activities towards exploration, by redirecting funding to innovative new programmes and support for new public-private initiatives,” acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot said in a statement.

time to start investing in OUR Country!” At the core of the plan is funding. The federal government will provide $200 billion in the next 10 years to spur another $1.3 trillion contributions from states and private investors, according to the initiative. Analysts, however, doubted the feasibility of the ambitious plan, because for every dollar the federal

government offers, other parties have to pay $6.5. As for the $200 billion, the White House said it will raise the money by cutting spending in other areas, including some transit and transportation funds it reckons as ineffective. It will now be up to Congress to debate the infrastructure proposal. Trump urged the Congress to draft and pass the infrastructure bill.

WASHINGTON: Citing increasing threats from China and Russia, the Pentagon has asked for a major boost in military spending for 2019, requesting Congress to approve a budget of $686 billion, one of the largest in the country’s history. President Donald Trump said the US military would be the strongest it has ever been, including “increasing arsenals of virtually every weapon”, reports CNN. The $686 billion budget is an increase of $80 billion from 2017 the Pentagon has said

that it was primarily aimed at countering Russia and China. “Great power competition, not terrorism, has emerged as the central challenge to US security and prosperity,” Under Secretary Of Defense David L. Norquist told reporters. “It is increasingly clear that China and Russia want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model-gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions,” the budget document said. — IANS

Narendra Modi reassures support for Palestinian cause Narendra Modi, the first ever Indian PM to visit Palestine, assured President Mahmoud Abbas that it will soon become a free country in a peaceful manner

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week reassured his country’s support for the Palestinian cause while Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas said that Palestinians relied on India’s role as an international force to bring peace in this region. “I have assured President Abbas that India is bound by a promise to take care of Palestinian people’s interests,” Modi said in a joint address to the media along with Abbas following a bilateral meeting. “India hopes that soon Palestine will come a free country in a peaceful manner,” he stated. Modi arrived in his first Prime Ministerial visit from India to Palestine. “The interests of the Palestinian people have always been at the top of our foreign policy,” the Prime Minister said. His comments came after India, along with the rest of the world, voted in the UN General Assembly in December last year against US President Donald Trump’s unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Isreal. Stating that India hoped for peace and stability in Palestine, he said that a permanent solution to the Palestinian issue was possible only through dialogue. “Only diplomacy and farsightedness can get rid of violence and

He said that the people of Palestine have continuously shown exemplary courage in extremely tough times, in spite of the fact that there was an unstable environment. “The way you have moved forward in such a situation is praiseworthy, we appreciate it,” the Prime Minister said. Stating that India has been cooperating with Palestine in its efforts at nation building, he said that budgetary support will continue to be provided in areas such as training,

technology, infrastructure development and project assistance. “India will continue to invest in health and education infrastructure, women empowerment and in the installation of a printing press,” he said. He also announced that from this year, the number of exchange of students between the two countries would be doubled from 50 to 100. Modi also expressed his gratitude for being conferred The Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian reserved for foreign dignitaries like kings, heads of

RAMALLAH: In keeping with India’s role as a major development aid partner for Palestine, the two sides this week signed six memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including in the areas of health and education, following a bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas. An MoU was signed for setting up of an India-Palestine super-specialty hospital at Beit Sahour in Bethelhem governorate at a cost of $30 million. A second MoU was signed for

state or government and persons of similar rank. On his part, Abbas said that the people of Palestine relied on India’s role as an international force, its role in the NonAligned Movement and in other international forums, “in a manner that is conducive for desired peace in our region”. “I would like to assert our commitment to political action and negotiations as way of achieving our national goals to freedom and independence in accordance with the two states’ relation along the lines of 1967,” the President said. He added that Israel and Palestine

Modi also laid a wreath at the mausoleum of Yasser Arafat, the Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the first President of the Palestinian Authority. the Ayushnman Bharat scheme. “Each family covered under this scheme will get free medical treatment worth up to Rs 500,000 (per year),” he added. Modi said people must be wondering what Ayushman Bharat was all about, his attention was drawn by a remark from somebody in the audience and he said: “Yes, newspapers in India call it Modicare.”

While the UAE is one of the largest suppliers of crude oil to India, it is also the 10th largest investor in India in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) having invested an estimated $8 billion.

DUBAI: Technology must be used only for development and raising the standard of life of the common man and not for destruction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. Speaking at the World Government Summit, Modi pointed out that while poverty and malnutrition have not been wiped out from the world, still a large chunk of resources were being diverted towards augmenting missiles and other weapon technologies. “Technology in itself is devoid of any moral values. That is why humans sometimes make it a means of destruction,” Modi said.

$1.8 billion fraud hits PNB

The Punjab National Bank has charged that foreign branches of other Indian banks may also be involved in the fraud along with diamond trader Nirav Modi

day after high-level fraudulent practice to the tune of $1.8 billion in one of the Punjab National Bank’s Mumbai branch was reported to the stock exchanges, Sunil Mehta, MD and CEO said it “will not spare anyone” involved in the wrongdoing. The Punjab National Bank (PNB) has charged that foreign branches of other Indian banks may also be involved in what has turned out to be the biggest fraud in the country’s banking sector involving diamond trader Nirav Modi. “We are known for clean banking. The fraud started in 2011. We have brought it under the notice of regulatory and law enforcement agencies as soon as we came to know about it. We will not spare anyone involved in the fraudulent practice,” Mehta told reporters here in hurriedly called press meet on Thursday. The PNB chief said the fraud was detected on January 25 and was reported to the investigative agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on January 29. He said he had received a “vague email” from the customers involved in the fraudulent transaction about settling the dues and the bank had asked them to send their detailed response. He said the transactions were detected in only one branch and no other branches were involved.

Judge recuses himself Bofors case

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court judge Justice A.M. Khanwilkar on Tuesday recused himself from hearing the case of alleged corruption in the purchase of Bofors 155 mm howitzers guns. Justice Khanwilkar, part of a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, did not give any reason for recusing himself. The matter will now be heard before a new bench on March 28. Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ajay Agrawal had challenged the May 31, 2005 verdict of the Delhi High Court discharging Britain-based Hinduja brothers — Srichand, Gopichand and Prakash Hinduja — in the case of alleged corruption in the purchase of Bofors. As for other banks, he said overseas branches of other Indian banks were affected by the transactions, except in one case. His answer was in response to a question whether any foreign bank

NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said diamond merchant Nirvav Modi’s $1.8 billion fraud in the country’s secondbiggest state-run bank was a guide to “looting India” which involves getting closer to and hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then slipping away from the country -- like liquor baron Vijay Mallya. “Guide to looting India by Nirav Modi. Hug PM Modi. Be seen with him in Davos. Use that clout to: steal 12,000 crore. Slip out of the country like Mallya while the government looks the other way,” Gandhi tweeted. At the same time, the PNB has

Modi seated in the center of the first row. “What criteria does the Prime Minister use to select the CEOs accompanying him on foreign trips,” Gogoi asked in his tweet. CPI-M’s Sitaram Yechury posted the same picture, pointing out that the businessman Modi may be in Switzerland where he went with Prime Minister Modi. “If this person had fled India before the FIR on January 31, then he is here, photographed at Davos with the PM, a week before the FIR, after having escaped from India? Modi govt must clarify,” Yechury said. “There is a pattern in how people who have defrauded banks in India, are allowed to escape by the Modi government.” The Punjab National Bank has said it detected the fraud at a single branch in Mumbai. —IANS

admitted to the involvement of one of its retired employees and officials of other Indian banks in the modus operandi adopted by diamond companies to dupe them. India warns Pakistan will pay for Jammu attack IANS, JAMMU

efense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said militants who killed five soldiers and a civilian at an Army camp in Jammu were Pakistanis and warned that Islamabad will pay a price for the terror attack. “Pakistan will have to pay for this misadventure,” Sitharaman told reporters here. The deaths of “our soldiers won’t go in vain”. The minister was in Jammu to take stock of the situation at the Sunjuwan Army camp which three heavily armed militants stormed on Saturday morning and entered the residential quarters of junior commissioned officers, spraying bullets and hurling bombs. The operation was called off on Monday morning after the three attackers were killed. A fourth one, she said, may have been a guide

and didn’t enter the military base. “Since the terrorist were dressed in battle fatigues and had similar appearance to their possible target victims, the operation had to be done (in a way) to eliminate the possibility of any mistaken identity of collateral damage.”

She said the operations entailed a search of 26 blocks and safe evacuation of families from 189 residential flats. Sitharaman said the three militants were all Pakistanis and were handled by their Jaish-e-Muhammad leaders across the border.

“The terrorists belonged to JeM, sponsored by Masood Azhar residing in Pakistan and deriving support from therein,” she said, adding a possibility of local support was being investigated. She said the Jaish module that conducted the attack may have infiltrated sometime back. The Minister asserted that evidences related to Jaish’s involvement in the terror attack would be shared with Pakistan. She said giving evidence to Pakistan would not prevent the Indian Army from responding “appropriately and at a time we deem fit”. The Minister said infiltration from across the Line of Control had ebbed to a great extent due to “anti-infiltration obstacle system and a dynamic multi-layered counter-infiltration grid” and activities of militants in hinterland were also being curbed.

Talking up peace with Pak

While her ruling alliance partners in the BJP want to tell Pakistan that enough is enough, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has consistently followed the peace approach SHEIKH QAYOOM. JAMMU

A

s security forces battled militants in both Srinagar and Jammu, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti reiterated that a dialogue between India and Pakistan still remained the only way out for lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). While her ruling alliance partners in the BJP advocate a hardline approach and want to tell Pakistan that enough is enough, Mehbooba has consistently followed the peace approach. Accepting that she would come under strong criticism for her comments during television news channel debates, the Chief Minister this week posted on her twitter page: “Dialogue with Pakistan is necessary if we are to end bloodshed.” “I know I will be labelled antinational by news anchors but that doesn’t matter. The people of J&K are suffering. We have to talk because war is not an option.” A war of attrition has already started between the two ruling alliance partners, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP legislators strongly protested against the PDP’s silence on the proPakistan rant by opposition National Conference MLA, Muhammad Akbar Lone. Lone had ruffled many a feather by shouting pro-Pakistan

slogans inside the state assembly this week. Defiantly, Lone maintained his stance when confronted by the media over such an embarrassing stand by a mainstream lawmaker. BJP legislators have demanded that an FIR be lodged against the MLA for his anti-national stand within the state assembly. The relations between the two ideologically opposite ruling partners in J&K have never been on

even keel. The PDP politically remains Valley-centric from where the majority of Mehbooba’s 28 MLAs won in the 2014 elections. All the 26 MLAs of the BJP were elected from the Jammu region as the party could not win a single seat in the Muslim-majority Valley. PDP founder and former Chief Minister, the late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, who forged the present alliance with the BJP, called it a

meeting of the South Pole and North Pole. After unending ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB), militants have stepped up suicide attacks even before Kashmir’s tourism season starts this year. Heavily armed militants of the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit stormed a highly fortified army camp in Jammu city. Five soldiers

une adventurist Shital RaneMahajan set a new record by becoming the first Indian to skydive sporting a colorful Navwari sari in Thailand this week. Speaking to IANS shortly after landing, an elated Rane-Mahajan said owing to favorable weather conditions, she was able to skydive twice from an aircraft at heights of around 13,000 above the worldfamous tourist resort of Pattaya. “I wanted to do something different with International Women’s Day coming up next month, so I decided on wearing the Maharashtrian Nav-wari sari for my skydives,” Rane-Mahajan told IANS on phone. Recounting her experiences, she said that wearing the Nav-wari sari itself is a challenge since the attire is

nine-yards (8.25 meters) long — compared to six yards of the regular Indian sari. “First, to drape the Nav-wari sari properly, plus to wear the parachutes on it, the safety gear and communication equipments, helmet, goggles, shoes, etc, add on to and make it all quite a challenge,” Rane-Mahajan explained, as she seemed to stumble in her first landing but escaped unhurt. Rane-Mahajan said that the country’s signature women’s wear

and a civilian were killed and 10, including six women and children, were injured in this terror attack. After killing three terrorists, the army said a fourth surviving terrorist is still hiding inside the camp. Even before the Jammu anti-terror operation could end, two militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit tried to enter a CRPF camp in Srinagar city, but were prevented by an alert sentry. A fierce encounter took place between the security forces and these militants who later entered a nearby under-construction multistoreyed building. One CRPF jawan was killed in this gunfight while a constable of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, fighting alongside the CRPF, was critically injured. As tensions on the border and the hinterland start mounting, the hardline approach adopted by the BJP and the so-called soft-pedalling by the PDP could become mutually uncomfortable for the two ruling partners in the not very distant future. State assembly elections are scheduled towards the end of 2020 as the term of the state assembly in J&K is six years against five in the country’s other states. If the present ruling alliance lasts its full six-year term, the dictum that politics is the art of the possible would be proved right. sari is draped in different styles all over India, but the Maharashtrian style of Nav-wari sari is probably the most difficult and toughest to manage for women. “I wanted to prove that Indian women can not only carry the sari graciously in their routine lives, but can also use it for high adventure like skydiving,” smiled the 35-year old extreme sportswoman. The jump was originally scheduled on February 11, but had to be postponed due to sudden heavy rains and stormy weather in Pattaya, though she managed a jump from 9,000 feet height. With this, the Padma Shri laureate and mother of two sons (nineyear old twins) has set around 18 national skydiving records, plus six international records and completed 704 jumps around the world, bagging several national and international honors. She shot to global fame on April 18, 2004, when she made her maiden jump — without practice dives — on the North Pole from a Russian MI-8 helicopter hovering at a height of 2,400 feet in minus 37 degree temperatures, making her the first woman in the world to accomplish the feat.

SA police raids Gupta family home The Guptas are known to wield substantial influence in the South African politics This week, the ruling party had formally asked Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, to resign. His links to the Guptas are one of the reasons he was being forced to step down before the 2019 general election.

A

n elite South African police team on this week raided the luxurious family home of the controversial Gupta family — a clan of Indian-born businessmen — linked to former President Jacob Zuma as pressure increases on him to stand down. Officials said three people were arrested as part of an investigation into the wealthy Guptas who are known to wield substantial influence in the South African politics due to close ties with the President, the BBC reported. The Gupta family has been accused of “state capture” — using their close ties with Zuma and a number of senior government officials to influence ministerial appointments, secure multi-million dollar government contracts and gain access to inside information.

Meanwhile, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) said that Zuma had until the end of the day to tender his resignation over a range of corruption charges or they would proceed with a vote of noconfidence in Parliament this

week. The ANC has a majority in Parliament and opposition parties will not support Zuma. According to the Constitution, the President and the Cabinet must resign if the no-confidence motion passes.

MALE: Two journalists including an Indian national working for a global news agency, who were arrested in the Maldives amid the raging political turmoil, will be deported, the police said. Indian citizen Money Sharma from Amritsar and India-born British national Atish Ravji Patel, both working for AFP, were in the crisis-hit Indian Ocean atoll nation to cover the state of Emergency, which was declared on February 6 by President Abdulla Yameen. The pair were picked up on Friday and are now set to be deported as they were “working in the country on a tourist visa in violation of the immigration law.” However, no legal action will be taken against them, the Maldives government said in a press release. “We would like to note that although they (the two journalists) have been asked to leave the Maldives, no other legal steps shall be taken against them,” the statement said. “All foreign nationals intending to work in the country should obtain either a business or work visa and this applies to journalists as well,” it said. —IANS

the government. Another raid in Johannesburg targeted the home of the Managing Director of one of the principal companies owned and run by the Guptas. The embattled Gupta family has a range of business interests in South Africa, including computing, mining, air travel, energy, technology and media. The three brothers, Atul, Rajesh and Ajay, moved to the country in 1993 from India, just as white minority rule was ending. They are known friends of Zuma -- and his son, daughter and one of the President’s wives worked for the family’s firms. The raid is a sign that Cyril Ramaphosa, the new leader of the ANC, will move swiftly against those associated with the corruption allegations and mismanagement that have characterized Zuma’s tenure.

Malaysia-based Indian-origin man, on death row for drug possession in Singapore, has been acquitted by the country’s Supreme Court. According to the judgment released this week, 32-year-old Gopu Jaya Raman proved that he did not know that controlled drugs were hidden in the bike that he rode into Singapore in 2014, the Straits Times reported. Earlier, he had contested the High Court’s judgment for not giving “due weight to evidence” showing that he did not know about the drugs.

On March 24, 2014, Raman was found trying to enter Singapore from Malaysia through Woodlands Checkpoint with three

black bundles of the illicit substance diamorphine hidden in his bike’s fender. During a routine check, the

police found the substance and Raman was arrested. He told police officials that he entered Singapore to meet his girlfriend along with another friend. Raman said he wasn’t aware about the drugs and the bike was not his. He said that he had stopped on his way to refuel the bike and at that time the drugs were not there. Raman, however, admitted that he had brought drugs into Singapore on two earlier occasions as he was trying to pay back a loan to the man who had gotten him the bike. Raman said the man had threatened to hurt his family if he did not traffic the drugs.

R

aj Shah, the Deputy Press Secretary of President Donald Trump, has addressed a media briefing at the White House, becoming the first IndianAmerican to do so. Shah, 32, made his debut address last week following the resignation of staff secretary Rob Porter over domestic abuse allegations. He was bombarded by questions on the White House advisor’s sudden exit, the US media reported. He was filling in the shoes of White House Press Secretary Sarah

Huckabee Sanders who is away on a vacation. Ahead of his briefing, Sanders took to Twitter and described Shah as “one of the best and the brightest in the Trump administration”. Shah was asked questions about Trump’s thoughts concerning legal immigration as it affects Indian immigrants, and those applying for Green Cards through the normal route, as well as on lifting the country quotas for legal immigration, News India Times daily reported. “The President wants to see legal immigration reforms. Zuma era ends in SA

Acting President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa was coming out of a ‘period of uncertainty, a period of darkness’ IANS, JOHANNESBURG

S

outh African President Jacob Zuma, who survived a string of corruption scandals and harsh court judgments during his nearly nine-year presidency, has quit finally after intense pressure from the ruling African National Congress (ANC). Deputy President and ANC’s new leader Cyril Ramaphosa is now the acting President until the National Assembly elects a new President‚ South Africa’s Times Live reported. Despite an earlier show of defiance, Zuma announced his resignation in a 30-minute farewell address to the nation on late Wednesday, just an hour before the deadline set for him by the ANC, in an effort to avoid dividing the party. Zuma said he was resigning even though he disagreed with the ANC’s decision.

50% import tariff on Harley unfair: Trump WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has criticized India for high import tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles and called it an “unfair” trade practice, media reported. He said the US must fight such trade practices with “reciprocal taxes”, since America does not have a levy on Indian motorcycle imports, the Hindustan Times reported on Wednesday. “We pay a tremendous tax to get into their countries — motorcycles, Harley-Davidson, it goes into a certain country. I won’t mention the fact that it happens to be India, in this case,” Trump was quoted as saying at the White House on Tuesday.

“No life should be lost in my name and also the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as President of the republic with immediate effect even though I disagree with the

decision of the leadership of my organization. I have always been a disciplined member of the ANC,” he said. He said he wished to be removed in line with the Constitution, the BBC reported.

Zuma, a former member of the ANC’s military wing in the days of apartheid, rose through the ranks of the party to become the President. He led the country for more than a third of its time after apartheid. But he leaves office with several scandals hanging over him and with South Africa’s economy in dire straits. He apologized to the nation for the errors committed during his term in office. Speaking in Zulu, he said he believed he had performed the task given to him by the country, but where he had erred, “may I please be forgiven”. Zuma said he would continue to serve the party and the country. The ANC said Zuma’s resignation provided “certainty to the people of South Africa”. Meanwhile, acting President Ramaphosa said South Africa was coming out of a “period of uncertainty, a period of darkness and getting into a new phase”.

Hafiz Saeed’s seminaries taken over in Punjab IANS, ISLAMABAD

P

akistan’s Punjab government has launched a crackdown on seminaries and health facilities run by the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief and 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed in Rawalpindi. Following orders by the Pakistan government, the Rawalpindi administration took control of a seminary and four dispensaries run by JuD and its charity wing Falahi-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), the Dawn newspaper reported on

Wednesday. The seminary was handed over to the Auqaf Department, which controls the religious properties, while the dispensaries were given to the Health Department. The action came after a high-level UN sanctions team visited Rawalpindi in January to review progress against groups and individuals banned by the UN. The UNSC sanctions list includes the names of Al Qaeda, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, JuD, FIF and Lashkar-e-Taiba. In January, the Securities and

JERUSALEM: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (in picture) has hit back after the police said there was enough evidence to indict him for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in two cases. Speaking on Israeli television soon after the allegations came to light on Tuesday, Netanyahu branded them “baseless” and pledged to continue as the country’s leader, the BBC reported on Wednesday. “Over the years, I have been the subject of at least 15 inquiries and

oughty Pakistani human rights activist Asma Jahangir, who fought her battle on the streets as well in courts, opposed military strongmen and steadfastly championed the rights of women, minorities and LGBTs, passed away here on Sunday. She was 66. According to Geo TV, Jahangir, the first woman President of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, was shifted to a hospital on Saturday night after suffering cardiac arrest. She died while undergoing treatment.

While condolences poured in from all sections, there was a section on people who condemned her even after she passed away.

Born on January 27, 1952 to a progressive family in Lahore, Jahangir’s path seemed set out with her father Malik Ghulam Jilani, a bureaucrat-turned-politician, opposing corruption at the fag end of Ayub Khan’s rule and the brutal crackdown in then East Pakistan under Yahya Khan following the 1970 election. After her graduation from the prestigious Kinnaird College and LLB from the Punjab University in 1978, she hit the headlines when she enthusiastically jumped into the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) against the Zia ul-Haq dictatorship and was jailed.

On February 14, the Congress launched a 24-hour protest in Kannur in which top party leaders took part. “Vijayan should speak up and condemn this henious act... Parrikar, an IIT-Mumbai alumnus, also said the use of drugs in educational institutions is not a new phenomenon. “When I went to IIT, there was a

small group which was into smoking ganja. So it is not today’s phenomenon,” he said, adding that a small section of students were also obsessed with pornography. India wins maiden series in South Africa Opener Rohit Sharma striked 17th ODI century before chinaman Kuldeep Yadav returned figures of 4/51 IANS, PORT ELIZABETH

I

ndia clinched their maiden ODI series win on South African soil, taking an unbeatable 4-1 lead after outclassing the hosts by 73 runs in the fifth One-Day International (ODI) at the St. George’s Park here this week. Opener Rohit Sharma led the tourists striking his 17th ODI century before chinaman Kuldeep Yadav returned figures of 4/51 to bowl the Proteas out for 201, in their chase of 274. The Proteas started off fluently with skipper Aiden Markram (32) and Hashim Amla (71) putting on 52 runs in the first powerplay before first change seamer Hardik Pandya struck thrice in quick succession. Pandya first removed Markram caught by skipper Virat Kohli at mid-off before inducing Jean Paul Duminy (1) to edge a length delivery off to Rohit at first slip. Pandya then struck again after a couple of overs with the wicket of dangerman AB de Villers (6) caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Struggling at 65/3, David Miller (36) came to South Africa’s rescue, forging a 62-run fourth wicket stand with Amla, before legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal brought

Russia to issue fan-IDs for FIFA WC MOSCOW: Russia will open 130 centers for issuing fan-IDs, which are required along with tickets for attending matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer, Irina Grigoryeva, an official with the Russian Sports Ministry, said this week. “Within the frames of preparations for the 2018 World Cup we are planning to open 30 offices for the issuance of fan-IDs as well as 100 additional centers near 12 stadiums selected to host matches,” Grigoryeva said. In late October, the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media announced the launch of an on-line registration process for obtaining fan-IDs required to attend matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Kohli terms ODI series win as ‘collective effort’ PORT ELIZABETH: India skipper Virat Kohli termed the fifth One Day International (ODI) win against South Africa as a “collective effort” “It’s been a collective effort to create history. When three guys at the top are being consistent, the guys who get an opportunity every now and then might not click,” Kohli was quoted as saying by the International Cricket Council website. “They had the pressure of losing this series and we knew that. It’s history and the guys have worked hard for it. Ever since the third Test in Johannesburg, it’s been a good time for us,” he added. “After this series is

wrapped up we’ll sit down and think about where to improve. For now, 41 feels great. We want to win 5-1, for sure, but there might be a scenario for a few more guys to get a chance in the next match. But the ultimate priority is to win and we’ll do anything we can to win,” Kohli said.

the tourists back into the game with the wicket of the southpaw. Despite losing his partners Amla, meanwhile, continued to fight a lone battle, reaching his 35th ODI fifty, his first in 13 innings even as he reached the milestone of 7,500 runs in 50-over cricket. But the joy was shortlived for the Proteas, with Pandya showing his magic in the field this time with a brilliant direct throw to dismiss Amla. Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav soon joined the party dismissing any chances of a South African come-

back with the wickets of Andile Phehlukwayo (0), Kagiso Rabada (3), Heinrich Klaasen (39) and Tabraiz Shamsi (0) to reduce the hosts from 166/5 to 197/9. Earlier, India rode on Rohit’s 126-ball 115, laced with 11 boundaries and four sixes to post 274/7 even after the lower order failed to capitalize on the brilliant start. Rohit became the fourth highest century scorer in ODIs for India, after Sachin Tendulkar (49), Virat Kohli (34) and Sourav Ganguly (22).

F

or the better part of the past one-and-a-half-decades, she has been the undisputed queen of Indian women’s tennis, but the former doubles World No.1 Sania Mirza has blamed the lack of proper sporting infrastructure in the country for the failure to produce a player who could probably challenge her numero uno status. Despite the emergence of many youngsters in the women’s circuit, there have been hardly anyone who has managed to come close to the 31-year-old Hyderabadi, in terms of her performance in global tennis. “We do not have a system in place. If a six-year-old wants to pick up a racquet today, he or she doesn’t know how to go about it.

Sania Mirza.

It’s a guessing game, it’s trial and error and that’s why we have a champion every 20 years. If we had a system in place, we would maybe have a champion every two years,” the six-time Grand Slam winner told IANS here this week. “Tennis is a lot harder than the

other sports, not in terms of the hard work that goes into it but in terms of what has to click to become a professional tennis player and to be really good at it. A lot of people actually die down due to the lack of financial support. “I am not in any way trying to

demean any other sport, just saying that tennis is too global a sport with 200 countries on the world stage every single day. “There are 52 tournaments, one every week where you can play so you can think of the competition, specially coming from a place where there is no infrastructure for tennis,” she added. Currently out of the court due to a knee injury, Sania praised the performances of the Indian Fed Cup team, comprising the likes of Ankita Raina, Karman Kaur Thandi, Pranjala Yadlapalli and Prarthana Thombare, pointing out that someone has to carry forward the mantle. “I have seen these girls from last many years, they are a very good lot. They are very hardworking and talented but it’s about taking that next step,” she said.

T

he concept for this film, Padman, is credited to Twinkle Khanna for the story that is based on the short tale in her book, “The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad”. This story has been inspired by the life of Arunchalam Muruganantham a social activist from Tamil Nadu who revolutionized the concept of personal hygiene during the menstrual cycle in rural India by creating low-cost sanitary pads. Incidentally, the film also shares the same premise as that of Phullu which was released in June 2017. Set in rural Madhya Pradesh,

Lakshmikant Chouhan (Akshay Kumar) a mechanic by profession and a loving and devoted husband to Gayatri (Radhika Apte) ensures that his wife leads a comfortable life

by introducing small inventions to enhance her daily life. But when he learns about the stigma and taboos that surround menstruation and the unhygienic

methods used by women during this period, he is pained. So he embarks on a mission to make affordable sanitary pads. How he succeeds in his endeavour, forms the crux of the tale. Lakshmikant’s story is truly inspirational and writer-Director R. Balki leaves no stone unturned to magnify it for the large screen. —Troy Ribeiro

Early Voting unlikely to start until Feb 21

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Although February 8 was the new statutory starting date for Early Voting, there remain ongoing cases involving objections to candidates’ petitions. As a result, ballots are not ready, and the programming and testing of voting equipment cannot be completed by February 8. The Board of Election Commissioners anticipates that balloting systems will be fully tested and available by February 21, if not sooner. Objections to certain countywide and statewide candidates’ nominating petitions were resolved recently or still are being resolved. Programming and testing of the equipment in the city’s more than 1,000 ballot variations in four languages is still under way. The Board will update the Early Voting schedule at chicagoelections.com as soon as possible. Any voters who arrive at the Chicago Election Board to use Early Voting in the meantime will be provided with an application to vote by mail. Chicago voters also may apply online to Vote By Mail at chicagoelections.com. When in-person Early Voting begins, the program will be offered: --Through March 4 only at the Chicago Election Board annex at 16 W. Adams St. --From March 5 through March 19, at 51 sites across the city. This year marks the second time that Early Voting was scheduled to begin 40 days before a Primary Election. A similar delayed start to Early Voting occurred for the same reasons ahead of the 2016 Primary Election. Before 2016, Early Voting began 15-22 days before Election Day.

C Host Zaid Ali with some of the contestants from America’s Smartest Family.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY – Come February 24, media and entertainment mega-giant ZEE Entertainment will debut ‘America’s Smartest Family’, a brand new television game show where 16 families will compete for a $10,000 cash prize. Airing exclusively on ZEE TV, the highlyanticipated series is the first-ever Englishlanguage quiz show of its kind, placing some of the globe’s brightest South Asian families on stage for a chance at the title of ‘America’s Smartest Family.’ Hosted by 23-year-old YouTube sensation Zaid Ali, ‘America’s Smartest Family’ is a unique mashup of the American household favorites ‘Family Feud’ and ‘Jeopardy,’ but with that special ZEE TV twist that celebrates its South Asian heritage. Complete with a diverse set of categories and a buzzer, each episode will feature five challenging in-studio question rounds, testing pre-screened contestants on their ability to answer quickly and more importantly--their ability to work as a team. Only the fastest, most well-rounded family

N

will get to take home the crown. Round 1 consists of four questions, with a toss deciding which family goes first. Participants can choose from one of five topics--science, math, arts, history and geography. Once a category is chosen, it may not be selected for the remainder of the round. During the first round, 100 points will be awarded for every correct answer. There are no deductions for wrong answers until Round 3 and 4, when a mistake can cost a team 100 points for every incorrect answer. As the game progresses, questions become increasingly difficult. By Rounds 3 and 4, each correct answer is worth 200 points. During the fifth and final round, the game takes a turn and host Zaid Ali spices things up by offering clues. If the team answers correctly without a clue, a maximum of 1,000 points is awarded. If the family chooses to get clues, each clue costs them 200 points. At the end of five rounds, scores may vary from 2400 to 5500. In the event of a tie, an extra tie-breaker round will identify the winner. In the first four episodes of the season, four families will compete against one another,

accumulating points for every correct answer. The eight winning teams from those early contents will move onto the semi-finals until just two families remain. The winners of the semifinals will make it to finals, for the ultimate faceoff, where one family will be named ‘America’s Smartest Family.’ The show is part of the Zee Originals initiative and joins a stellar line-up of upcoming shows that have been created for the evolving South Asian audience. “In its 20th year of network broadcast in North America, it’s time to produce relevant content for the audience which is locally sourced and features the local community. This is yet another commitment from Zee which prides itself as being the innovative leader for the market,” said Sameer Targe, Head of Americas for Asia TV. One can watch the world premiere of ‘America’s Smartest Family’ on ZEE TV at 9 pm EST; 9:30 pm PST; and 9 pm AST. BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- When Chandrakant Modi was growing up in India, his father suggested a career in medicine because it would enable him to earn a decent living while also helping the needy. Modi is glad he listened to his father’s advice. Dr. Modi settled in the Chicago area after medical school in India and residency in the Chicago area in Pathology and Internal Medicine. He pursued a successful career in the US that has included pathology and emergency medicine. Despite his professional success, what has given him the greatest sense of fulfilment is that in the last 20 years Dr. Modi has helped people in distant lands. He has been on numerous missions with Flying Doctors of America, a division of Medical Mercy Missions, Inc. Under the banner of Flying Doctors, volunteer medical professionals fly to remote villages in countries including Haiti, Madagascar, Amazon, Panama, Jordan and the borders between India and Tibet. There is no cost to the patient for the expert medical attention these doctors offer, and for the physicians, the heartfelt appreciation of the patients is beyond material value. “The trips to provide medical care have been very rewarding,” said Dr. Modi, now an energetic septuagenarian living in Skokie, Ill. “The people in underserved areas need care, and they appreciate our presence. Our missions bring hope and healing to the poorest of poor people.” Flying Doctors is a not-for-profit organization founded by Allan Gathercoal DD, based at 212 W. Ironwood Drive, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83894. Flying Doctor organizes mercy missions about half-dozen times a year to remote areas where residents do not have regular access to medical care. Future missions by Flying Doctors are planned to countries, including Panama, Guyana, Peru, a women’s prison in Bolivia etc. In 2009 Dr Modi, was recipient of President’s Circle Award given by Flying Doctors of America, in recognition of his contribution? Now semi-retired, Dr Modi intends to go on many more such trips, in part to fulfil his father’s dream for his son. Indian cardiologists in healthcare fraud BY A STAFF WRITER LEVELAND, OH – An Indian American cardiologist duo in Cleveland, Ohio, has been charged with healthcare fraud and prescribing drugs illegally. Dr. Ashis Rakhit and Dr Jayati Rakhit practiced at several different clinics in Cleveland, Parma and Strongsville under the name Ohio Cardiology Associates Inc. According to a federal indictment, since 2011, the couple began performing tests their patients did not need, then billing insurance and Medicare for the money they cost. “They were performing medically unnecessary tests, including cardiac catherizations, nuclear stress tests, EKG,” said US Attorney Justin Herdman. “They were then fraudulently billing for those services to insurance companies, and doing what’s called up-coding on the services, so getting a higher reimbursement for the services they performed,” Herdman

said. The indictment also alleges that the Rakhits would falsify information in patients’ records, including adding symptoms in their official files, symptoms the pair did not have. The doctors were additionally charged

with prescribing medications to patients whose symptoms indicated they did not need the drugs, including Tramadol, Percocet and Xanax, it is learnt. If convicted on all charges, the couple could spend 20 years in prison.

Indian admits he lied about bid to join IS BY A STAFF WRITER ORFOLK, VA -- An Indian American man from Williamsburg has admitted he lied about taking a trip to Jordan in a failed attempt to join the Islamic State group. Shivam Patel pleaded guilty on February 8 in US District Court to two counts of making false statements. Court documents and prosecutors say that while texting with an FBI informant in 2016, Patel expressed admiration for a US Army officer who shot and killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas. Prosecutors say Patel was working in China that summer when he flew to Jordan. He was arrested, detained and then returned to the US. He was alleged to have told an undercover agent he wanted to join a “Muslim army” and commit jihad. Patel later tried to join the US Army and

BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, MS -- Researchers, including one Indian American, have developed a new computer model based on artificial intelligence that can quantify the extent of kidney damage and predict the life remaining in the organ. The findings can help make predictions at the point-of-care and assist clinical decisionmaking. “While the trained eyes of expert pathologists are able to gauge the severity of disease and detect nuances of kidney damage with remarkable accuracy, such expertise is not available in all locations,” said Vijaya Kolachalama, assistant professor at Boston University. The machine learning framework based on convolutional neural networks relied on pixel density of digitized images, while the severity of disease was determined by several clinical laboratory measures and renal survival. CNN model performance was then compared with that of the models generated using the amount of fibrosis reported by a nephropathologist as the sole input and corresponding lab measures and renal survival as the outputs. “In essence, our model has the potential to act as a surrogate nephropathologist, especially in resource-limited settings,” Kolachalama added.

Shooting near NSA hqs being probed

Indian killed in Georgia shootings BY A STAFF WRITER OME, GA – Two Indian Americans, Parmjit Singh, 44, and Parthey Patel, 30, were the victims of a shooting that happened at two different gas stations and convenience stores in Rome, Georgia. Singh was pronounced dead at the scene, while Patel is still in critical condition. The police said that Lamar Nicholson, 28, walkaed into the Hi-Tech Quick Stop on Burnett Ferry Road on the night a little before 9 pm. “He walks right up to the counter, pulls a gun out of his right pocket, fires 3 rounds, and runs out, he’s in and out in under 12 seconds,” Floyd County Police Sgt. William Wacker told reporters, adding that there was no robbery or altercation. Ten minutes later, Nicholson got into his car, drove a mile and a half down the road and entered Elm Street Food and Beverage, another convenience store, stealing some money before shooting Patel. “For whatever reason after he stuffed his pockets full of money, he shot the clerk anyway,” said Rome Police Lt. John Walters. The police spotted Nicholson in his car less than two miles away, along with a pistol and some money on the seat. He was arrested on multiple charges including murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and is being held without bond in the Floyd County jail.

R

BY A STAFF WRITER ORT MEADE, MD – US law enforcement on February 14 said they were investigating an apparent shooting near the National Security Agency (NSA) headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, with local media reporting at least one person had been wounded and one taken into custody. Officials said there was no continuing threat after the morning incident, which left a black sport utility vehicle (SUV) riddled with what appeared to be bullet holes, according to video from the scene. It was unclear whether shots had been fired by a suspect or by law enforcement. “NSA police and local law enforcement are addressing an incident that took place this morning at one of NSA’s secure vehicle entry gates,” the agency said on Twitter. “The situation is under control and there is no ongoing security of safety threat.” A Fort Meade spokesman confirmed one person had been injured and transported and that a main highway was closed near the facility, a US Army installation, 48 km northeast of Washington.

77 immigrants found stuffed in UPS truck BY A STAFF WRITER AN DIEGO, CA -- A traffic stop on what appeared to be a brown UPS truck on January 28 evening revealed 77 immigrants stuffed shoulder-to-shoulder inside its hot cargo area. Five children were found traveling among the overheated group of Mexican nationals, who admitted to being in the US illegally, according to a criminal complaint filed in San Diego federal court. A California Highway Patrol officer pulled the truck over because the vehicle had no tags and was weaving on Old Highway 80, about a mile west of Tierra Del Sol Road. A US Border Patrol agent patrolling the area in an unmarked car passed by the vehicle stop and asked the officer if he’d like assistance. When the agent approached the truck, he observed it was riding “extremely low” and had what appeared to be fresh paint on the rear. He could also smell body odor and what was described as the pungent smell of a soap commonly used in Mexico. The truck driver, a US citizen who had been placed in the CHP car, said the truck was his and gave permission to search. When the agent opened the rear doors, he

found dozens of people standing inside, sweating excessively. In an interview with authorities, the driver, Shawn Lee Seiler, admitted to being a human smuggler who was expecting to transport 50 people that evening, the complaint says. He said he was surprised to learn there were 77 inside. He told investigators he was to be paid

$100 for each immigrant he transported, the complaint alleged. Seiler was arrested on a charge of transporting unauthorized immigrants for financial gain. Criminal charges were also lodged against two of the immigrants after records checks found they had prior deportations. The remaining people in the group are being held as material witnesses in the smuggling case.

Sikh-owned gas station vandalized in Kentucky BY A STAFF WRITER OUTH PORTSMOUTH, KY -- An Indian American-owned gas station in South Portsmouth, Kentucky, was defaced early morning on Febraury 1 by a vandal who spray-painted swastikas, “white power,” and racist language on its exterior. The vandal, who is still at large, also spraypainted the word “leave” and “f**k you” on the store, called the Pit Stop. The Kentucky State Police are investigating the case as criminal mischief, and plan on working with county prosecutors to discuss a possible a hate crime charge. Gurpreet ‘Gary’ Singh Bath, who owns Pit Stop, said he was baffled as to why anyone would target his gas station and convenience store. “I’m the first Punjabi guy in this neighborhood. But this has never happened before.” Singh has owned Pit Stop and another convenience store nearby since 2013, when he immigrated to the area from Toronto, Canada. He said he has never experienced racism in the five years he has lived and worked in the state.

BY A STAFF WRITER RISCO, TX – An Indian American man, Christopher Singh, 31, of Frisco, Texas, was stabbed to death on January 28 night at The Luxe 3Eighty apartments in Little Elm, Texas. Singh was pronounced dead at about 9:20 pm at Medical City Denton, according to the medical examiner’s records which also indicate that he suffered other serious wounds as a result of an argument with his alleged girlfriend or spouse, who too was hospitalized with injuries that night. Though Troy Taylor, the Denton chief death investigator for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, has ruled Singh’s death as a homicide, Little Elm police Lt. Larry Denison said that they have not confirmed whether or not the woman had stabbed him. The police, who responded to a domestic dispute at the apartment complex at around 8:20 pm on January 28, said the man had suffered serious injuries which were “apparently as a result of the argument.” Singh was then treated at Medical City Denton until he was pronounced dead about an hour later while the woman suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening, and was being treated at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton. Singh’s 27-year-old brother Richard told reporters Christopher was married to the woman and added that the two had been dating for about two years and lived together in the apartment. Richard, who lives in Dallas, Texas, said the woman was the mother of the couple’s 11-month-old son and that Singh also had a 3-year-old son from a previous relationship. Richard said his family had moved from New York to Texas in 2006.

I

n a first, scientists have grown human eggs in a laboratory from its earliest stage to full maturity, an advance that could lead to improved fertility treatment for young cancer patients. Previously, the feat was achieved in mice eggs to produce live offspring. But the process proved tricky in humans. However, in the new study published in the journal Molecular Human Reproduction, the egg cells were removed from ovary tissue at their earliest stage of development, to the point at which they are ready to be fertilized. The study explained how human eggs develop at various stages, which could aid research into other infertility treatments and regenerative medicine. “Being able to fully develop human eggs in the lab could widen

Ultrasound, blood test together may boost liver cancer detection NEW YORK: Earlier detection is important to improving survival of patients with liver cancer, and combining an ultrasound imaging with a blood test can help achieve that, say researchers, including one of Indianorigin. Using ultrasound and a blood test for high alpha fetoprotein (AFP) levels together improves detection of early-stage liver cancer significantly, said the study published in the journal Gastroenterology. AFP is a plasma protein that is produced in abundance by the liver cells in the foetus. In adults, AFP levels are normally low, but liver cancer can cause AFP levels to rise.

NEW YORK: In a major advancement in nanomedicine, an international team of scientists has successfully programed nanorobots for the first time in mammals, that potentially shrink tumors by cutting off their blood supply. Each nanorobot is made from a flat, rectangular DNA origami sheet that is 90 nanometers by 60 nanometers in size. Once bound to the tumor blood vessel surface, the nanorobot was programmed to deliver its unsuspecting drug cargo in the very heart of the tumor, exposing an enzyme called thrombin, key to blood clotting. The study in the journal Nature Biotechnology showed nanorobots working fast, congregating in large numbers to quickly surround the tumor just hours after injection. “We have developed the first fully autonomous, DNA robotic system for a very precise drug design and targeted cancer therapy,” said Hao Yan, Professor and Director at Arizona State University. — IANS

This UV light safely kills airborne flu virus IANS, WASHINGTON

S “Liver cancer screening in patients with chronic liver disease has traditionally been performed using an abdominal ultrasound. While ultrasound is readily available and noninvasive, it misses many cancers when they are small,” said Amit Singal, associate professor, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre.

the ovarian follicles, before further growth and monitoring. Eggs and their surrounding cells are then removed from liquid culture to undergo further development in a nutrient-rich membrane. The technique could help safeguard the fertility of girls with cancer ahead of potentially harmful medical treatment, such as chemotherapy. Immature eggs recovered from patients’ ovarian tissue could be matured in the lab and stored for later fertilization, the researchers said. Conventionally, cancer patients can have a piece of ovary removed before treatment, but reimplanting this tissue can risk reintroducing cancer. “We are now working on optimizing the conditions that support egg development in this way and studying how healthy they are. We also hope to find out, subject to regulatory approval, whether they can be fertilized,” Telfer said.

Soon nanorobots to seek, shrink tumors

cientists have discovered a special type of ultraviolet (UV) light that can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues, according to a new study. Broad-spectrum ultraviolet C (UVC) light, which has a wavelength between 200 to 400 nanometers, has been routinely used to kill bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together, reports Xinhua. “Unfortunately, conventional germicidal UV light is a human health

hazard and can lead to skin cancer and cataracts, which prevents its use in public spaces,” said David J. Brenner, lead author and director of the Centre for Radiological Research at Columbia University Irving Medical Centre. But, the study also found that continuous low doses of far-UVC light, around 207 to 222 nanometers in wavelength, is capable to inactivate over 95 per cent of aerosolized H1N1 flu virus.

Human kidney tissue capable of producing urine created IANS, LONDON

I

n a first for medical science, scientists have successfully produced human kidney tissue within a living organism that is able to produce urine, a significant milestone in the development of treatment for kidney disease. Using stem cells, scientists from the University of Manchester, created mini-kidneys that were implanted into mice. Tests revealed they were able to filter and excrete waste. In the study, published in the journal Stem Cell Reports, kidney glomeruli — a constituent microscopic parts of the organ — were generated from human embryonic

Glomeruli were generated from human embryonic stem cells.

stem cells grown in plastic laboratory culture dishes. These were combined with a gel like substance, which acted as natural connective

tissue — and then injected as a tiny clump under the skin of mice. After three months, an examination of the tissue revealed that

nephrons — the microscopic structural and functional units of the kidney — had formed. The new structures contained most of the constituent parts present in human nephrons — including proximal tubules, distal tubules, Bowman’s capsule and Loop of Henle. Tiny human blood vessels — known as capillaries — had developed inside the mice which nourished the new kidney structures. “We have proved beyond any doubt these structures function as kidney cells by filtering blood and producing urine — though we can’t yet say what percentage of function exists,” said Sue Kimber, Professor at the varsity. “What is particularly

exciting is that the structures are made of human cells which developed an excellent capillary blood supply, becoming linked to the vasculature of the mouse,” “Though this structure was formed from several hundred glomeruli, and humans have about a million in their kidneys — this is clearly a major advance,” Kimber stated. However, the mini-kidneys lack a large artery, and without that, the organ’s function will only be a fraction of normal. Thus, researchers are working with surgeons to put in an artery that will bring more blood the new kidney.

ver wondered why it is so difficult to maintain a healthy weight after substantial weight loss? Hunger hormone ghrelin which tricks the bodies into thinking that it needs to eat more, may be the culprit, researchers have shown. According to Catia Martins, Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), most people with obesity are able to lose weight, even on their own, but only 20 per cent manage to maintain the new lower weight. The study showed that when we lose weight, the stomach releases greater amounts of the ghrelin hor-

Being vegan good for environment: Study LONDON: Are you planning to go vegan very soon? That’s good news for our home planet as a new study claims that a diet high in fruit and vegetables is better for the environment than one rich in animal products. This is mainly due to the high energy requirements of livestock farming as well as the very large contribution of livestock to greenhouse gas emissions, said the study. In addition, intensive livestock production is also responsible for significant biodiversity loss due to conversion of natural habitats to grass and feed crops, the researchers noted. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, also found that organic food provides signifi-

cant, additional climate benefits for plant-based diets. “We wanted to provide a more comprehensive picture of how different diets impact the environment,” said Louise Seconda, researcher at the Agence De L’Environnement Et De La Maitrise De L’Energie, an environmental protection organization in France. “In particular, it is of considerable interest to consider the impacts of both plant-based foods and organic foods,” Seconda added. For the study, the researchers obtained information on food intake and organic food consumption from more than 34,000 adults. They used what is called a ‘provegetarian’ score to determine preferences for plant-based or animal-based food products.

Young users shunning Facebook IANS, SAN FRANCISCO

F

acebook is fast losing young users and two million people under the age of 25 in the US will stop using the social networking platform this year, global research firm eMarketer said. Facebook is still adding monthly users but older age groups are mainly responsible for this. The number of total Facebook users in the US will reach 169.5 million this year, up just under 1 per cent from 2017. “For the first time, less than half

of the US Internet users ages 12 to 17 will use Facebook via any device at least once per month,” the eMarketer report added. Meanwhile, Facebook’s proportion of social network users access-

ing the platform will continue to decline over the forecast period. Snapchat is set to gain from Facebook’s loss. “Snapchat could eventually

experience more growth in older age groups, since it’s redesigning its platform to be easier to use,” Debra Aho Williamson, Principal Analyst at eMarketer said in a statement. “The question will be whether younger users will still find Snapchat cool if more of their parents and grandparents are on it. That’s the predicament Facebook is in,” he added. “Facebook will lose two million users ages 24 and younger this year”, it said. But not all of those users are migrating to Instagram.

This can contaminate your morality IANS, NEW YORK

ir pollution not only affects your health but may also lead to unethical behavior such as crime and cheating, researchers have warned. A combination of archival and experimental studies indicated that exposure to air pollution, either physically or mentally, is linked with unethical behavior. The experimental findings suggest that this association may be due to increased anxiety. “This research reveals that air pollution may have the potential ethical costs that go beyond its well-known toll on health and the environment,” said lead author of the study, Jackson G. Lu of Columbia Business School.

“Our findings suggest that air pollution not only corrupts people’s health, but can also contaminate their morality,” Lu added. For the study, published in the journal Psychological Science, researchers examined air pollution

and crime data for 9,360 US cities collected over a nine-year period. The air pollution data included information about six major pollutants, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide.
