Tired of Dizziness or Imbalance? You are Not Alone! We Can Help You! Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS) is the region’s #1 specialist for vestibular and balance disorders and the only private practice in Chicagoland’s northwest suburbs utilizing NeuroCom’s NASA-based Smart Equi Test System. Rupangi Patel is the co-founder and CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS), located in a state-of-the-art facility near Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall. "Our goal is to help people get back to their daily life as quickly as possible,” says Rupangi. She has been serving the northwest suburbs since 1990 and has worked with many of the leading area hospitals. Her passion for helping people led her to start her own clinic in 2005.
How does testing on the SMART Equi System evaluate my balance? Balance is a very complex interaction between the sensory system and brain. The Equi Test System helps us determine if there is a problem in the interaction between your sensory system – eyes, ears, sensation in your feet and joints – and the brain, which coordinates your movements. This equipment also allows us to compare your performance to that of other people your age who don’t have balance or vestibular issues. What does therapy consist of once my balance issues are determined? Our specialists set up a rehabilitation protocol for your functional limitation and quantify performance over time. This means better outcomes that carry over to daily living. The therapy consists of specific balance exercises, including head movements, changing surfaces,

Utilizing the latest NASA-based technology and treatments, the PTS team is dedicated to providing the best care available to help your body regain health and well-being. At PTS we provide orthopedic, neurological and vestibular rehabilitation and have helped thousands of patients in the community. What is the SMART Equi Test System and how can it help me? The system was initially developed for NASA to evaluate how space flight affects balance control and inner ear function in astronauts. This equipment allows our rehab professionals to perform six tests that measure body movement and sway during different purposeful movements or when standing still.
How many treatments will q it take for me to see an improvement with my balance? Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation q of your condition. Most of 4 our patients have seen a significant improvement in as little as one to two weeks.

Do you experience a numbness or loss of sensation in your legs and/or feet? If you answered “YES” to one or more of these questions, you may have a balance problem.

TRUMP BLASTS COHEN Donald Trump slammed his former attorney Michael Cohen on Twitter after a secret audio of a recording between the two was aired IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump blasted his former attorney Michael Cohen this week after a secret audio of a recording between the two about making a payment to Playboy playmate Karen McDougal was aired. In the 2016 conversion aired on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time”, Trump, then-US presidential candidate, and Cohen could be heard discussing how they would buy the rights to McDougal’s story about an alleged affair she had with the leader years earlier. Trump denies the affair and took to Twitter in the morning slamming Cohen. “What kind of a lawyer would tape a client? So sad! Is this a first, never heard of it before? Why was the tape so abruptly terminated (cut) while I was presumably saying positive things?

“I hear there are other clients and many reporters that are taped can this be so? Too bad!” Trump tweeted. Court filings said federal prosecutors have 12 recordings from Cohen and according to CNN, the recording with Trump
was among those 12. The tape’s release made a further dent in the relationship between the President and Cohen, who was the former’s previous steadfast supporter, personal attorney and long time confidant.
Cohen is under criminal investigation by the US attorney’s office in Manhattan for his personal financial dealings, including the payment he made to porn actress Stormy Daniels on Trump’s behalf before the election. However, he has not been charged with any wrongdoing in Daniels case. In the audio, Trump and Cohen discussed other matters, including an attempt by the New York Times to unseal the records from the President’s first divorce and mentioning pastor Mark Burns, a Trump supporter. Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis provided CNN the September 2016 recording and said Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani had been “falsely disparaging” Cohen. Giuliani contended that the recording would not harm Trump after news came last week that the recording of Trump and Cohen was among those obtained by prosecutors.
Democrats urge to unify migrant families WASHINGTON: A group of Democratic lawmakers has urged the Donald Trump administration to reunite the thousands of migrant children separated from their parents at the border with their parents. “The American Academy of Pediatrics tells us what’s happened to these kids... is institutional child abuse, at the hands of our government,” said Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, the second highest lawmaker within his party in the upper house, at a press conference this week, Efe news reported. The Democrats requested the US President to renunite the migrant kids with parents within 24 hours (July 26), when the deadline set by a federal judge expires. “The bottom line is this: this is a disgraceful chapter in our history, and we’re only coming to the end because of a federal judge (and a court order). There are lives that will be harmed and changed forever because of this zero tolerance policy,” said Durbin. —IANS

US dollar slips against major currencies NEW YORK: The US dollar index decreased against other major currencies as the country’s new home sales data came out disappointing. In late New York trading on July 25, the euro increased to $1.1699 from $1.1683 in the previous session, and the British pound was up to $1.3172 from $1.3138 in the previous session, Xinhua news agency reported. The Australian dollar climbed to $0.7437 from $0.7415. The US dollar bought 110.83 Japanese yen, lower than 111.22 Japanese yen of the previous session. The US dollar fell to 0.9924 Swiss franc from 0.9941 Swiss franc, and it decreased to 1.3049 Canadian dollars from 1.3160 Canadian dollars.
US sales of new single-family houses in June 2018 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 631,000, missing market estimates and hitting a 8-month low, the Commerce Department announced. This is 5.3 per cent below the revised May rate of 666,000, but is 2.4 per cent above the June 2017 estimate of 616,000. Meanwhile, investors also kept a close eye on the meeting between the US and the European Union in Washington, as the EU’s JeanClaude Juncker is slated to meet with US President Donald Trump on July 25 afternoon. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, decreased 0.25 per cent at 94.377 in late trading. —IANS
S President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, has decided to close down her fashion brand. The move comes over a year after she split from the company to enter the White House as a senior adviser, BBC reported this week. Trump launched the brand in 2014, but after her father’s election was faced with boycotts from shoppers. Trump had reportedly become frustrated by the difficulties posed by avoiding possible conflicts of interest while serving in the White House. A spokesperson for the company said the decision “has nothing to do with the performance of the brand and is based solely on Ivanka’s decision to remain in Washington indefinitely.” After 17 months in her White House role, Ivanka Trump said she did not know “when or if I will ever return to the business”. “But I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners,” she said in a statement. “I am beyond grateful for the work of our incredible team who has inspired so many women; each

other and myself included. While we will not continue our mission together, I know that each of them will thrive in their next chapter,” she added.
The move comes over a year after she split from the company to enter the White House as a senior adviser According to NBC News, she met personally her 18-person staff at Trump Tower in New York City after the company’s closure was announced to employees.
The brand had already been dropped by several retailers such as the Nordstrom chain and - just last week - Canada’s largest department store chain Hudson’s Bay. Both companies blamed poor sales for their decision. Trump’s company is private and does not release sales figures. But according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited research from Rakuten Intelligence, online sales at Amazon, Macy’s and Bloomingdales fell almost 45 per cent in the year to June. An investigation by the Washington Post last year found that virtually all of Trump’s clothing was manufactured in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and China.

he BJP on Monday attacked Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the ‘secrecy pact’ in the Rafale deal, calling him irresponsible for “misleading Parliament” and for dragging French President Emmanuel Macron into the matter. It also advised Rahul Gandhi to “do homework and improve understanding” of India’s foreign policy and security issues. “Rahul Gandhi is irresponsible; he makes false statements in Parliament. He was irresponsible on two fronts: First, by saying there was no confidential agreement (between India and France on the Rafale fighter jet deal); and second, by dragging French President into an internal political debate,” Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here. “This is unfortunate. The Finance Ministry noted that Bank for International Settlements data showed “non-bank loans and deposits (which really constitute the individual and corporate deposits used as black money haven in the past and exclude inter-bank transactions) have fallen by 34.5 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.

F
acing widespread criticism, the Centre on Monday set up a high-level committee and a Group of Ministers headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh to check mob lynchings, close on the heels of an incident in Alwar in Rajasthan where a Muslim man was killed by suspected cow vigilantes. In the officials committee to be
headed by Home Secretary R.K. Gauba, the Secretaries of the Departments of Justice, Legal Affairs, Legislative and Social Justice and Empowerment will also be members. “In order to formulate appropriate steps to address the (mob lynching) situation, the government has set up a high-level committee to deliberate and make recommendations within four

some statements made by them during the no-confidence motion debate on Friday. was worried over the “transparent and honest” functioning of the BJP-led government. “We can say with complete responsibility that Rahul Gandhi clearly misled the house when he said that there was no confidentiality agreement,” the Minister said. (GoM) headed by Rajnath Singh to consider the committee’s recommendations. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad and Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot are members of the GoM. The GoM will submit their recommendations to the Prime Minister. The government has come under attack over a spate of lynchings in states, especially of those belonging to the minority communities, by suspected cow protection vigilantes.
Will raise H1B visa issue at 2+2 dialogue: Sushma IANS, NEW DELHI
E
xternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said that India will raise the issue of changing H1B visa norms with the US at the 2+2 dialogue scheduled to be held on September 6 in New Delhi. “We are already raising the issue formally at various fora. We are speaking on it with the White House, with state administration as well as with Congressmen... We will raise it humbly at the 2+2 dialogue on September 6 in New Delhi,” Sushma Swaraj told Rajya Sabha. She said that although there has been “no major change so far” in the H1B visa policy from the US side but the prevailing sentiment in the
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj (File Photo: IANS/MEA)
US about tightening of visa norms was a cause of concern for the “Indian government, the opposition members and the entire House”. The minister said that in fact the number of visas has actually gone up
from 1,08,000 in 2014 to 1,29,000 in 2018. “But yes, the apprehensions are there. The number of visas may be cut or the norms may be made stricter. But we are trying our best
that this should not happen. I have raised it with my counterpart Rex Tillerson. The Finance Minister raised it with US Trade and Commerce Secretary and our Commerce Minister too raised it recently,” she said. In February, the Trump government came up with a new visa policy that makes the procedure for issuing H-1B visas tougher. As per the new policy, the hiring company would have to prove that its H1B employee at a third-party worksite has specific and non-qualifying speculative assignments in speciality occupation. The India-US 2+2 dialogue is aimed at elevating the strategic relationship between the two countries.

New law not enough to stop mob violence
The Supreme Court of India (Photo: IANS)
It is obvious that behind the present fraught conditions is the deterioration in the calibre of politicians AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
lthough the Supreme Court has suggested that a law be enacted specifically to deal with the “new normal” of lynchings, it will be advisable to widen the scope of the legal remedy to include all forms of mob violence, even if doubts are likely to remain about the efficacy of the proposed solution. The wider ambit should include the killings and acts of intimidation of the kind that occurred during the recent panchayat elections in West Bengal and the sporadic targeting of rivals by the followers of the Communist Party of India-Marxist and the Sangh parivar in Kerala. Politics is the direct cause of these instances of violence in the two states while the lynching of beef-eaters and meat traders in other parts of the country underlines the fascist trait of targeting those who are seen as "aliens" who are violating the culinary fetishes of the ruling dispensation. On the other hand, the killing of
the suspected kidnappers of children is apparently the result of an atmosphere of anarchy which has come to prevail in the absence of a stern enforcement of law and order — a lacuna which the judiciary wants to be rectified to instill fear in the offenders. As is known, conscientious officials have always known that no
Those indulging in the murderous acts in front of cameras would not have been so defiant if not sure of being on the right side of the powersthat-be incidents of violence, including communal riots, can continue for any length of time unless there is political instigation. If the police have clear orders to crack down on the unruly elements at the first sign of trouble, an outbreak of lawlessness can be quickly snuffed out.
The problem, however, is that not only do the trouble-makers almost invariably have political backing, the police are also told by their political masters to let them vent their ire — at least till it becomes politically damaging because of media coverage. As the violence during the panchayat elections in West Bengal made it clear, the goons could not have gone around carrying lethal weapons without caring for the television cameras to terrorize the voters and opposition politicians unless they were sure that the ruling party would stand by them. It is the same with regard to what has been happening in the case of the gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) or the group which opposed the screening of the film, Padmavat. Those indulging in the murderous acts in front of cameras, or threatening to bury alive an actor and the producer in a television show, would not have been so brazenly defiant if they were not sure of being on the right side of the powers-that-be.
Battling joblessness through entrepreneurship Amid negligible presence of the private sector and government employment opportunities, a small but dedicated band of young entrepreneurs is using innovative start-ups to generate jobs in Sikkim SARWAR KASHANI, GANGTOK
S
ikkim has many distinctions that give the tiny state nestled in the Himalayas between India and China a largerthan-life profile. It is the only organic state in India, is litter- and defecation-free, has high literacy and has the best working conditions for women. But the challenge of unemployment it faces is huge which has made many embrace entrepreneurship to not just generate jobs for themselves but to provide employment to the state’s aspirational youth. Amid negligible presence of the private sector and government employment opportunities already saturated, a small but dedicated band of young entrepreneurs is meeting the challenge head on -using innovative start-ups to generate jobs. Home to nearly 610,000 people, Sikkim boasts of being the third-richest state (after Delhi and Chandigarh) by per capita income in the country.
Entrepreneur Rewaj Chettri, who has launched over 30 enterprises — the most recent being the taxi aggregator app, NE Taxi. (Photo: IANS)
In 2008, Sikkim became India’s first open defecation-free state. Eight years later, it became the country’s first and the only organic state. A nationwide survey in 2016 said the state had the best working conditions for women in India. The literacy rate is seventh highest and its young are educated
but, without jobs, drifting into drugs and despair. The state has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country after Tripura, also in the Northeast. The unemployment rate per 1,000 people aged more than 15 years was at 136 in 201617 in the state, according to the
Annual Employment and Unemployment Survey report. Another singularity this least populated state in India holds is that 10 per cent of its population is in government jobs — which is way above the national average of 3.5 per cent. That is why Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has an advice for
thousands of youth waiting for jobs in the state: They should overcome the desire to get government employment and, in fact, help the state to create jobs for others. Some of the youth have taken a cue from the Chief Minister who has been ruling the state for a quarter of a century now. Among them is serial entrepreneur Rewaj Chettri, who has launched over 30 enterprises -- the most recent being the taxi aggregator app, NE Taxi. He started the app with Rs 300 that he spent on purchasing a domain name www.netaxi.in, using shared hosting two years ago. NE Taxi is a tourist cab service catering to travelers in the northeast. He now employees 26 people and has his “annual turnover crossing Rs 3 crore”, making it to the Forbes list of Asia. “We are a bootstrapped company and all the profits are pumped back to grow the business. We are set to expand to North India by the end of 2020,” Chhetri told IANS.

U
S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that he is committed to working with the Congress on a new Russia sanctions bill, after he issued a “Crimea Declaration” that rejected Russia’s control of Crimea. Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo on Wednesday said that he will support the bill to hold Russia accountable for its behaviors around the globe. He confirmed the necessity to raise the cost of Moscow’s alleged malpractice “if we can find the right places and the right leverage point”, Xinhua news agency reported. Rouhani also shared a message for Trump, saying “do not play with the lion’s tail, because you will regret it eternally”. Trump criticized the earlier pact and demanded a more aggressive one which restricts the Iranian ballistic missile programme. The 2015 nuclear agreement limited Tehran’s nuclear energy programme in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

Bomb scare outside US Embassy in Beijing
BEIJING: A man detonated a bomb on a street outside the US Embassy in Beijing on Thursday, rattling the diplomatically sensitive area in the capital. The police identified the man as 26-year-old Jiang Moumou, who set off a device made from fireworks, injuring his hand. He hails from China’s Inner Mongolia region. “There was an explosion at approximately 1 p.m. on the street outside the South East corner of the Embassy compound,” the US mission said in a statement. “There was one individual who detonated a bomb. Other than the bomber, there were no injuries and there was no damage to Embassy property,” it added.

Paving the way for a $30 billion stock buyback, the company also announced to pay a termination fee of $2 billion to NXP Semiconductors that makes automotive, security and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. “We will continue to focus on our strong momentum in new growth industries with projected revenues of approximately $5 billion for fiscal year 2018 -- up greater than 70 per cent from fiscal year 2016,” Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm, said in a statement on Thursday. —IANS

KABUL: Fourteen people have been killed in a blast which rocked Kabul airport shortly after Afghan Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum returned from self-imposed exile, according to police. The lake under the Martian ice stretches 20 kms across, said the team led by Roberto Orosei from the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna in a paper detailed in the prestigious journal Science. The lake is about 1.5 km beneath Mars’s surface and is at least one meter deep. The detection was made using the Mars Advanced Radar for Sub-

first confirmed news of liquid water ever detected on the Red Planet. “We discovered water on Mars,” said Orosei. In 2015, in the first-ever definitive signs of the presence of liquid water on the Red Planet, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured strong evidence for seasonal flows of liquid salty water on the Martian surface. In the new discovery, Orosei and colleagues used MARSIS to survey a region called Planum Australe, located in the southern ice cap of Mars. Orosei and team wrote: “There is no reason to conclude that the presence of subsurface water on Mars is limited to a single location.”

n Indian-origin landlord in the UK who failed to fit smoke alarms inside a house owned by him leading to the death of two boys in a fire, has been jailed for a year, in the first prosecution of its kind in the country since new smoke alarm regulations were introduced in 2015. Kamal Bains, 51 was told that his inability to install smoke detectors at his property in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was a “significant cause” of the deaths of Logan Taylor, three, and two-year-old Jake Casey, the Telegraph reported. The 51-year-old was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for repeat-

edly ignoring requests to install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at the rented property before the fire in February 2016. Sentencing him, Justice Males,
told him: “Your failure to fit smoke alarms was a significant cause of the children’s deaths. Thus the harm caused by your failure could not have been more serious.”
The youngsters died when an electrical fault in a TV caused a fire in their bedroom in February 2016 as their mother Emma Taylor was beaten back by heat as she tried to rescue them, the court heard. Bains admitted a breach of health safety law in a case believed to be the first of its kind. West Yorkshire Police said the prosecution was the first to be brought since legislation was passed in October 2015 which requires private sector landlords to have at least one smoke alarm installed on every storey of their properties. Bains had been on trial for manslaughter but the charges were dropped after he admitted the health and safety violations.

Karnataka rivers in spate after record monsoon rains IANS, BENGALURU

ecord southwest monsoon rains over the last seven weeks have turned rivers across Karnataka into spate, inundating low-lying areas, submerging road bridges and flooding farmlands, said an official this week. “Heavy monsoon rains over coastal and Malnad regions since June have led to the reservoirs filling to their maximum levels and flooding the low-lying areas,” the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director G.S. Srinivasa Reddy told IANS here. Major reservoirs in the Cauvery basin like the Krishna Raja Sagara

(KRS) in Mandya district, Kabini reservoir in Mysuru district across Kabini river, one of the major tributaries of Cauvery, and others have
received water to their maximum capacity. “With good rains in the catchment areas, the reservoirs are in a good condition. The state will
not have the fear of facing a hydrological drought (due to low water supply in reservoirs, ground levels),” Reddy added. Even as the state has received a 13 per cent excess monsoon rainfall till date since June 4 when the southwest monsoon set in over Karnataka, the distribution of rainfall has been uneven with south interior and northern districts continuing to face rainfall deficit. The southern districts of Chamarajanagar and Chikkaballapura and the northern districts of Ballari, Haveri, Vijayapura and Yadgir face a shortage of rainfall, according to the data from India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Bengaluru center.

Bumrah might recover in time for the second Test from his broken thumb he suffered in the first match in Ireland, but Bhuvneshwar’s low back pain appears to be more serious. On paper, the fast bowling still looks adequate with Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav being experienced enough to man the department. Shami hopefully has left his personal and fitness problems behind to be fresh enough to produce the form that made him the highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets in South Africa six months ago. The next best was 14 wickets of Bumrah ahead of Bhuvneshwar’s 10 and Ishant’s eight. As for spin, which will have a greater role to play in the second half of the English summer, Kuldeep Yadav’s chances of playing were dented after the way Joe Root went after him in the last two one-dayers.
The match ended a 27-day long exposure tour in three different countries which included matches in China, Thailand and Malaysia.

A solo run from Rohit from the left of the box opened up the rival defense. He then passed it to the midfielder who tapped it home to double the lead. Danu breached the Malaysian defense one minute to the halftime but this time his right-footer rattled the woodwork. The second half was confined more to the midfield before India created another opportunity at the stroke of the hour-mark but the opposition goalie leapt over Danu to avert the danger.

Imran as new Pak captain? Imran Khan-led PTI celebrates as Pak set for hung assembly; Imran wants India ties to improve IANS, ISLAMABAD
Ready to improve ties with India: Imran
P
reliminary and unofficial poll results on July 26 indicated that Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has obtained a clear edge over the other parties, leading in over 119 National Assembly seats, a day after Pakistan voted for its second consecutive democratic transfer of power. Although PTI workers and supporters started celebrations before the final results, no statement — or even a tweet — has been issued by the former cricketer himself on the results. His spokesperson Naeemul Haque, however, tweeted that the PTI chief will "address the nation in celebration and recognition of the massive support received from the people of Pakistan in the 2018 elections which was a contest between the forces of good and evil". In Punjab, with preliminary results from polling stations available with the ECP, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is currently holding its lead on 117 provincial seats but PTI is closing in with a lead on 102 seats. Imran Khan's party is clearly steering ahead in KhyberPakhtunkhwa with a lead on 55 seats against Muttahida Majlis-eAmal (MMA), which is currently leading on 7 seats. The preliminary results from Sindh show PPP-P leading on 60 seats, followed by PTI on 14 seats. In Balochistan, the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) is leading on 10 provincial seats, followed by the Balochistan National Party (BNP) on seven seats. According to Geo News, Awami National Party leader

Imran’s victory incredible lesson: ex wife Jemima ISLAMABAD: With cricketer-turnedpolitician Imran Khan set to become the next Pakistan Prime Minister, his former wife Jemima Goldsmith on July 26 hailed his poll victory as “an incredible lesson in tenacity”. In a tweet, she recalled how Khan, who had retired from cricket after winning the 1992 world cup, took a plunge into politics in 1996 and launched the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief. “(Twenty-two) years later, after humiliations, hurdles and sacrifices, my sons’ father is Pakistan’s next PM.
Ghulam Ahmed Bilour conceded defeat to PTI's Shaukat Ali, his competitor in Peshawar, saying: "The results indicate that Imran Khan is a favorite leader of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. I
India will have to tread carefully with the new dispensation across its western border.

It’s an incredible lesson in tenacity, belief and refusal to accept defeat. The challenge now is to remember why he
am a democratic person and I admit the defeat." Counting was still going on at the polling stations of different constituencies. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President
entered politics in the 1st place. Congratulations,” Goldsmith tweeted. She said she remembered Khan’s first election in 1997 — “untested, idealistic and politically naive”. “I waited up for the call in Lahore with three month old Sulaiman, who I had lugged around the country. “Eventually he called. ‘It’s a clean sweep’ and after my gasp, ‘…the other way’. He roared with (a) laughter.” Khan and Jemima, a British TV, film and documentary producer, journalist and campaigner, married in 1995.
Shehbaz Sharif at a mid-vote count press conference said his party rejects the poll results. In a tweet, he said the party had rejected the results "due to manifest and massive irregularities".
Will Imran remain Pak Army’s poodle? AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
E
ven the best laid plans of mice and men can go awry. If the Pakistan army wanted Imran Khan to score a runaway victory in the elections, it will be disappointed. If an inability to reach the halfway mark forces the former cricketer and international playboy to constitute a coalition, the already confused scene in Pakistan will become more muddled. The reason is that Imran cannot have any truck with either his bete noire, Nawaz Sharif ’s Muslim League or with Bilawal Bhutto’s People’s Party. He will have to
depend, therefore, on the Independents to form a government. Will Taliban Khan, as Imran’s critics have called him because of his supposed soft corner for jihadis, be equal to the task? If he wanted among his putative supporters the party of the mastermind of the Mumbai massacre of November 26, 1908, Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, he must have been disappointed to learn that the latter’s Allah-o-Akbar party has fared poorly in the polls. For the Pakistan army, Imran’s stumbling just before breasting the winning tape cannot but be disquieting. Although Rawalpindi, where
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf chief Imran Khan said on July 26 that he is ready to improve ties with India. “If India is ready to resolve disputes, we are ready to take two steps, but they need to take that one step.... blame game will take us nowhere,” he said in a televised address in Islamabad while declaring victory in the general elections. He said he felt disappointed over the Indian media's coverage of his electoral campaign. “I felt like I was a Bollywood villain,” he noted. Khan said dialogue with India is the only way forward to ensure a peaceful South Asia. The cricketerturned-politician who began his political struggle 22 years ago said: "God has given me the chance to make my dream come true." —IANS Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also said he had not received any official results from any constituency where he was contesting, despite it being past midnight. A delay was reported in the transmission of election results due to the breaking down of the Election Commission of Pakistan's Results Transmission System (RTS), which is being run through a software powered by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra). A single party will need to bag at least 137 of the directly elected seats to be able to form the government on its own. the army headquarters are located, will be in overall control over the country’s foreign policy (as also the domestic scene) as always, it still likes a civilian to be the formal head of the government to tell the world about the country’s democratic credentials. Imran may be able to play that role even at the head of a coalition. But he is likely to be somewhat hamstrung, especially in the face of criticism by Nawaz Sharif’s Muslim League. The army’s relief, therefore, of having succeeded with a little help from the judiciary to oust the supposedly pro-Indian Nawaz Sharif will only be partial. It will also be concerned about how reliable a puppet Imran will turn out to be. Will the swashbuckling hero of cricket and now of politics, who has been accused of being a drug addict by one of his former wives, scrupulously follow the script written for him by the army ?

‘Dhadak’: Performances make the heart beat
D
irector Shashank Khaitan’s Dhadak suffers from a lack of intrigue, right at the outset, as owing to being based on the popular Marathi hit Sairat, naturally, the story and outcome are all prefixed and something the audience is acquainted with. So it is only the performances that you are looking forward to, albeit with high expectations. And indeed those keep you hooked. Set in Udaipur, Rajasthan, Dhadak is the love story of Madhu (Ishaan Khatter) and Parthavi (Janhvi) who are classmates in college. While he hails from an ordinary family and helps his father run a restaurant, she is the daughter of Ratan Singh (Ashutosh Rana), a local politician belonging to a

higher caste. Smitten by her, Madhu follows her around like a lost lamb and it is his perseverance and sincerity that makes her come round too, and fall madly in love with him.
Her brother Roop and father are against this alliance and try to separate the two, but of course they succeed in running away and settling down in Kolkata with the help of his maternal uncle who loves him dearly. Ishaan Khatter as the lovelorn Madhu, is endearing and charm
personified. His passion, sincerity and energy are palpable and he becomes Madhu with ease. Jhanvi as Parthavi, is more restrained, but a firebrand too. She has a strong screen presence and emotes with confidence. Their on-screen chemistry is good and they make a cutely innocent pair. It is their sincere performances that involve you and make you feel their pain, joys and anxieties. The character actors, especially his two friends, lend able support. It is the script which appears to be a staid, cut copy, paste unimaginative job on the “Sairat” template. Thus, “Dhadak” lacks a soul of its own. It is the dramatic end however, which leaves a greater impact than even the original.

it when the bad guys get their comeuppance, and when non-cooperators are punished,” said Pat Barclay, from University of Guelph, in
Ontario, Canada. “But some of the time, cooperators are the ones that get punished,” Barclay added. Some people like to bring cooperators down, especially if they think the good guys make them look bad in the workplace, Barclay said. According to the researchers, being suspicious, jealous or hostile towards those who seem better or nicer or holier than us appears to run deep in the psychological makeup of humans. “You can imagine within an organization today the attitude, ‘Hey, you’re working too hard and making the rest of us look bad,” Barclay said.

i India in its detailed investigative report published in Sept 2013 issue detailed the modus operandi and expressed fear that this will snowball into bigger and probably biggest ever scandal involving transnational scammers. A total of 61 individuals and entities for their alleged involvement in a transnational criminal organization that has victimized tens of thousands of persons in the United States through fraudulent schemes that have resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. In connection with the scheme, 20 individuals were arrested and convicted in the United States and 32 individuals and five call centers in India were charged for their alleged involvement. Many scams were reported and revealed during the investigation including: QQ IRS Scam QQ Immigration(USCIS) Scam QQ Payday Loan Scam QQ Government Grant Scam QQ Inheritance Scam QQ Lottery Scam QQ Utilities – Pre paid Scam QQ Utilities – Un Paid Scam QQ Computer Tech Support Scam The honor and distinction of longest sentence went to Miteshkumar Patel, 42, of Willowbrook, IL. The stiffest of the 21 sentences was reserved for Miteshkumar Patel, he got 20 years on a charge of money laundering conspiracy. Mitesh Patel served as the Domestic Manager of a Chicago-based crew of “runners” who liquidated and laundered the money paid by victims who got the scam calls from India. Mitesh Patel coordinated directly with the Indian side of the conspiracy. He was held accountable for laundering $9.5 million to $25 million, it said. From Miteshkumar Patel, the government seized 25 gold bars, six silver bars, about $241,000 worth of reloadable prepaid cards, about $4,100 in cash, a few silver coins and two iPhones, according to court records. Second place honor of longest sentencing also went to another Arlington Heights, Illinois-based conspirator, Hardik Patel, 31, who got 15 years and eight months in prison for his role as Owner and Manager of one of the call centres. Patel was reportedly in communication with notorious call Centre scam kingpin Sagar “Shaggy” Thakar, who was arrested by Indian authorities in 2017. Dipakkumar Patel, 38, also of Illinois, was sentenced by a Georgia federal judge Feb. 14, 2018 to four years and three months in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to conspiracy and passport fraud. He was also ordered to pay $128,006.26 in restitution. t he c a l l c e nte r op e r ators t he n threatened potential victims with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay taxes or penalties to the government. If the victims agreed to pay, the call centers would then immediately turn to a network of U.S.-based co-conspirators to liquidate and launder the extorted funds as quickly as possible by purchasing prepaid debit cards or through wire transfers. The prepaid debit cards were often registered using misappropriated personal identifying information of thousands of identity theft victims, and the wire transfers were directed by the criminal associates using fake names and fraudulent identifications. The co-conspirators allegedly used “hawalas,” in which money is transferred internationally outside of the formal banking system, to direct the extorted funds to accounts belonging to U.S.-based individuals. According to the indictment, these individuals were expecting the hawala transfers but were not aware of the illicit nature of the funds. The co-conspirators also allegedly kept a percentage of the proceeds for themselves.
were linked to call centres based in Ahmedabad. Five of them were sentenced on Friday by the same federal court in Texas that had sentenced the rest earlier in the week. Including three sentenced earlier, the total is up 24, making it perhaps the single largest arrest and sentencing of Indians and people of Indian descent in a single case. They are said to have duped thousands of Americans of millions of dollars between 2012 and 2016, when they were put out of business, indicted, charged and arrested. One of the world’s leaders in callcentre business, India has also emerged over the years as home to fraudsters and scammers using the same business model to target Americans. One US law enforcement agency found Indians behind tech support — when a virus alert freezes the screen, the number to call to unlock it has been traced in many occasions to India. The elderly and recent immigrants were the preferred targets of these fraudsters. Callers from the Indiabased call centres would call them up impersonating as officers of the
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). The victims were picked from data brokers and other sources, and were sometimes old women and men or recently naturalized immigrants. The callers, trained to perfection on an American accent, “threatened (them) with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay alleged monies owed to the government”. Most victims paid up, agreeing to one of the payments methods offered by the scammers — to buy a prepaid stored value card or by wiring money. Those arrested and charged in the US were mostly “runners”, operatives who collected the extorted money and transferred it to Indian accomplices through a different and complex set of procedures. Once a victim provided payment, the call centres turned to a network of runners based in the United States to liquidate and launder the extorted funds as quickly as possible by purchasing reloadable cards or retrieving wire transfers. “In a typical scenario, call centres directed runners to purchase these stored value reloadable cards and transmit the unique card number to India-b as e d co-conspirators who registered the cards using the misappropriated personal identifying information (PII) of U.S. citizens. “The India-based co-conspirators then loaded these cards with scam funds obtained from victims. The runners used the stored value cards to purchase money orders that they deposited into the bank account of another person.” During the four years the operation was active, more than 15,000 U.S. residents were scammed out of hundreds of millions of dollars and more than 50,000 people had their personal information misused. Twenty-two of the defendants have been held jointly liable for restitution payments over $8.9 million to victims of the scam, the DOJ reports. The court also included money judgements over $72.9 million in sentencing. Con artists posing as IRS agents threaten to sue, arrest or deport you if you don’t immediately pay a supposed tax debt. They may also threaten to suspend your driver’s license or take other action. The debts, of course, aren’t real. But for nearly five years the impostors have bullied people into paying them over the phone, often with prepaid debit cards or iTunes cards. No one wants to tangle with the IRS. You feel like you’re entering a
MIDWEST / EASTCOAST duel holding an empty pistol. You’re outgunned and you can’t win. So you pay to make the trouble go away. Through July 19, 2018, 14,204 victims had reported losing about $70 million to the scheme, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Pennsylvania has been hit hard, with 415 victims losing $1.9 million, the eighth-most nationwide. The IRS scam calls are not as prevalent now. They’ve been wellpublicized, INCLUDING HI INDIA, in its repeated columns, the phone industry has done a better job of blocking the

guilty pleas, between 2012 and 2016, the defendants and their conspirators perpetrated a complex fraud and money laundering scheme in which individuals from call centers located in Ahmedabad, India, frequently impersonated officials from the IRS or USCIS in a ruse designed to defraud victims located throughout the United States. Using information obtained from data brokers and other sources, call center operators targeted U.S. victims who were threatened with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay alleged monies owed to the government. Victims who agreed to pay the scammers were instructed how to provide payment, including by purchasing stored value cards or wiring money. Once a victim provided payment, the call centers turned to a network of runners based in the United States to liquidate and launder the extorted funds as quickly as possible by purchasing reloadable cards or retrieving wire transfers. In a typical scenario, call centers directed runners to purchase these stored value reloadable cards and transmit the unique card number to Indiabased co-conspirators who registered the cards using the misappropriated personal identifying information (PII) of U.S. citizens. The India-based coconspirators then loaded these cards with scam funds obtained from victims. The runners used the stored value cards to purchase money orders that they deposited into the bank account of another person. For their services, the runners would earn a specific fee or a percentage of the funds. Runners also received victims’ funds via wire transfers, which were retrieved under fake names and through the use of using false identification documents, direct bank deposits by victims, and Apple iTunes or other gift cards that victims purchased.

West Nile virus is active in IL
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A woman has been diagnosed with West Nile Virus in west suburban Aurora. The 38-year-old checked into the emergency room at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora with symptoms like headaches, fever, nausea and diarrhoea and was recently diagnosed with the disease, according to the Will County Health Department. The woman told authorities she was in the Wisconsin Dells about one week before her symptoms started. The woman was treated and has recovered from the disease, but the department is warning residents that West Nile Virus is active in Illinois this summer. The number of mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile Virus in Will County has risen sharply over the past month. The Will County Health Department Environmental Health Division operates 14 mosquito traps that have collected more than 190 samples this season. Since June 29, eight of them have produced samples of West Nile Virus. The disease is carried by the Culex mosquito according to Katie Nelson from Will County Environmental Health.

Raju Reddy named WHC Vice Chair BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Silicon Valley will make its presence felt at the 2nd World Hindu Congress (WHC) with 200 technocrats registering for the conference. One of their own, angel investor Raju Reddy, is Vice Chair–an invitation he accepted because he has come to believe that it takes “scale” to make an impact. WHC is, after all, scale in its truest sense--a gigantic undertaking that will seek to impact Hindus around the globe. Over 2000 prominent Hindus and 250 thought leaders will gather in Chicago during September 7-9, to spark dialogue and discussion on how Hindus can make a bigger societal impact globally. Heads of States, media personalities, top-drawer corporate executives and national community leaders will share the dais to discuss how Hindus can make their presence felt in 7 key areas: education, economy, media, politics, greater visibility of Hindu women and youth and Hindu organizations. According to Raju, Hindus are viewed as great doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs, as positive role models but they need to become “change makers.” This requires them to be organized. The release of a Diwali stamp by the US Postal service, corrections about Hinduism in California textbooks, the election of the first Hindu Congressman Ro Khanna are visible examples of the benefits of organization and would have been impossible “if Hindus had not organized themselves.” Raju, from Nizamabad, Telangana, worked at Intel for 10 years, then took his

It was a substantial company with 2500 people operating in 12 countries before it was bought by Hitachi in 2010. Raju discovered a second calling with his newfound time – mentoring and philanthropy. He brings 25 startups from India to Stanford each year and invites senior executives from Silicon Valley to meet with them under the StartupBridgeIndia initiative. His second big initiative is Kakatiya Sandbox–a nonprofit that focusses on creating better economic opportunities and positive role models at the grass root levels in rural Telangana, his home state.
BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- American gas station owner in Milwaukee, Wis., Harshinder Bhatia, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of forcing an Indian woman to work. Bhatia, who was accused of forcing and threatening an Indian woman to work between September 2009 and April 2011, has agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge of “harboring an alien for financial gain,” the first count in a three-count indictment. The remaining two counts were dismissed as a result of the plea deal, media reports said. The charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, up to a $250,000 fine, a mandatory special assessment of $100 and a maximum of three years of supervised release. The indictment says the victim in this case travelled to the US with family in 2007 for a wedding in New York, staying there for five or six months before returning to India.

Man gets 20 yrs for role in gunning down Indian BY A STAFF WRITER E W H AV E N , C T – A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the 2015 shooting death of an Indian American clerk at a New Haven convenience store. As per reports, Leighton Vanderberg, who drove two gunmen–Jamal Sumler, 27, and Dwayne Sayles, 25–to the Forbes Avenue convenience store where they shot and killed Sanjay Patel during a robbery, apologized to the victim’s widow in court on July 18. He previously pleaded guilty to being an accessory to first-degree robbery and testified for the prosecution in the trials of the two shooters. Both were convicted. Vanderberg (25) is already is serving a 40-year sentence for felony murder in the fatal shooting of Jose Salgado, killed while working at his small grocery store in Bridgeport, five days after Patel was slain. Patel, 39, was working behind the counter of Pay Rite Food/Citgo Station on the night of April 6, 2015, when Sumler and Sayles walked in. They pointed guns at him and both shot him as a scuffle broke out when Patel tried to defend himself with a stool.

Vanderberg, the key witness in the trials of each shooter, testified he drove them to a side street near the store and parked while the two men walked to Forbes Avenue. Vanderberg said that within about 10 minutes, Sayles returned to the car, clutching a box of Dutch Masters cigars. Sumler came back shortly after that and then Vanderberg drove them to Sayles’s home at the Church Street South housing complex. Superior Court Judge Patrick Clifford, who noted Vanderberg’s cooperation with the state, made the sentence concurrent with the 40-year sentence for the Bridgeport shooting.
BY A STAFF WRITER RENNSBORO, NC -- A rising high-school freshman, Jamie Patel, on July 7 won a national championship in a gymnastics national meet in Greensboro, N.C. Patel told reporters she worked very hard and had a goal of winning the title. Gymnastics have been part of Patel’s life since she was 3 years old and she has vivid memories of her early days as a young gymnast. She experienced some tough times along the way, specifically four years ago when she broke her arm. She remained determined to not allow that to keep her down. Patel, who competes in the double mini and the floor, had been to nationals before but this was the first time she finished on top. Her determination to finish first motivated her to add to her workouts and she began training at D-Rocks Gym in Marshall. Patel, an upcoming freshman at Marshall High School, said she started training about five days a week. She ramped up her strength training over the past 18 months, which made a huge difference. According to Patel, she was inspired to focus on the strength training after watching Simone Biles, Patel’s favorite Olympic gymnast.
buprenorphine, and then unlawfully dispensed those controlled substances to other people. Aggarwal is also charged with healthcare fraud for allegedly causing fraudulent claims to be submitted to Medicare for payments to cover the costs of the unlawfully prescribed buprenorphine. Aggarwal could face a total per count sentence of maximum 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000.00, or both, for the controlled substances offenses. She also faces an additional maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and fine of $250,000.00 for the healthcare fraud charge. Pending sentencing, the court continued Aggarwal on bond.
Indian youth goes missing in GA BY A STAFF WRITER OGANVILLE, GA -- An Indian American man, Alvin Ahmed, 25, has been reported missing since last week. He was last seen on July 16 at a grocery store in Loganville, Georgia at around 9:15 p.m. after his shift at a Publix pharmacy. According to the police, Ahmed’s car was still in the store’s parking lot and was unlocked, and appeared to be rummaged through. “The groceries were in the car, the white coat he wears was thrown in the back and the glove box was open,” Lt. David Hunt of the Loganville police told reporters. According to a Facebook post from his older brother Kalvin, Ahmed graduated early from UGA and went to pharmacy school; he was supposed to start working as a full-time pharmacist next month. Kalvin also said that he believes his brother was abducted because the same day before 5 pm, “Alvin was allegedly approached by a group of young men walking down US 78 who asked him about his Honda Civic and ‘how much you make.’” Though he is “hoping that it was just some random thing or it was just kids being dumb and it’s unrelated” as Ahmed did not confront them and told his supervisors that

it had happened for the first time. Two days after Ahmed went missing, a body was found in nearby Lake Carlton but due to the level of decomposition, it was unidentifiable. Results of an autopsy in which dental records were used to identify the body have come back inconclusive thus officials are not able to confirm whether the body is that of Ahmed though have admitted that the timeframe fits his disappearance. A vigil was held by the community in hopes to find Ahmed alive and unharmed.

BY A STAFF WRITER ANTA CLARA, CA -- Over 700 Sindhis from all over the world, including some from the Indian American community--convened at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara here during July 5-8 for the 25th annual International Sindhi Sammelan 2018. The four-day-long event, organized by the Sindhi Community of Northern California in association with Alliance of Global Sindhi Associations, also marked the 100th birthday of Dada Jashan Vaswani, the revered spiritual head of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission Pune. The all-encompassing event offered an array of exciting activities, including theater, comedy, music, and dance. Each year, the event, focused on “promoting and preserving Sindhiyat,” is organized by a local chapter of the worldwide organization. The convention started with a message from Dada Vaswani, who passed away recently,
S
and a brief overview of his contributions to humanity. Professional singers from India sang songs in praise of Dada following which a Sindhi group dance was performed. July 6 was marked by the Jhoole Laal aarti and the rest of the evening was packed with a range of programs celebrating the Sindhi culture, heritage, and music. The event provided a platform to the millennial
Sindhis to interact with each other. A matrimonial website was also launched at the event. The community members saw the presentation of the Sindhi play, “Bela Ka Jhamela,” and live music performances rendered by acclaimed Sindhi artistes from India: Kaajal Chandiramani, Jatin Udasi and 15-year-old sensation Drshika Advani. On July 7 and July 8, the program commenced early morning with Asa-Di-Var and Jhoole Laal aarti. During the rest of the day, the guests indulged in a host of festivities, which went on until midnight. The programs included spiritual discourses, a health fair, karaoke/dance talent shows, recitations of Sindhi poetry, a theatrical presentation “Lila Chanesar,” and the screening of the documentary, ‘Tirth Dham’. Catering to business professionals, the convention also hosted talks on corporate life, and panel discussions on venture-capital market and technology entrepreneurship.
Woman fakes cancer to defraud donors BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A New York mother of two, who defrauded donors out of more than $51,000 by posing as a terminal cancer patient in need of treatment, was sentenced on July 13 to two years in federal prison on charges of wire fraud. Indian American Shivonie Deokaran, who also goes by the name Vedouti Hoobraj, apologized in court before her sentencing to her sons, donors, and victims of cancer. “Words can’t describe the pain and hurt I have caused you. I’ll spend the rest of my life becoming the mother you deserve,” she said. Hoobraj asked US District Judge Vincent Briccetti for mercy and her lawyers requested just a year and a day in prison. But Bricetti called Hoobraj’s crime “truly appalling.” According to a Justice Department report, from 2014 through 2016 in Westchester County, New York, and elsewhere, Hoobraj solicited donations by falsely stating that she had been diagnosed with terminal stage leukemia, had been given only 18 months left to live, and needed money for medical care and other expenses.

Hemang Jani
BY A STAFF WRITER UNTSVILLE, AL -- A doctoral candidate at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), Hemang Jani, was named among 85 students worldwide to receive a 2018 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship from SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. The scholarships recognize the society’s student members for their potential contributions to optics, photonics, or a related field, with the award-winning applicants evaluated, selected, and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, the university announced in a July 10 news release. Jani, who grew up in India, came to UAH after completing his master’s degree in physics at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara in Gujarat state. In 2017, he was selected to attend the esteemed Siegman International School on Lasers hosted by the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. In addition to attending workshops, Jani presented his research on the use of ultra-short optical pulses to probe fast electronic dynamics in tiny semiconductor structures in a poster entitled “Ultrafast Nanophotonics: Quantum Dot Thin-Film Sensor Fabrication and Few-Cycle Pump-Probe Spectroscopy.” More recently, Jani was awarded a scholarship to attend the summer seminar at Stanford’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he was trained on new opportunities in ultrafast science, including X-ray free electron lasers. As a part of this experience, Jani–along with a team of students from both the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Max Planck Society–presented a mock-beam time proposal to study ultrafast effects in novel superconductors.
