nited States Secretary of State John Kerry called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on August 1 and conveyed that President Barack Obama attaches great priority to relations with India and looks forward to a productive and fruitful summit in September in Washington. Kerry, along with Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, held an hourlong meeting with Modi at the prime minister’s 7, Race Course Road official residence. Kerry along with Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker held an hour- long meeting with Modi attached great priority to relations with India, both for bilateral cooperation and global partnership, and looks forward to a productive and fruitful Summit in September in Washington to set an ambitious new agenda to chart a new course in the

relationship, said an official statement. Modi said that there was broad convergence of views and interests between the two countries. He outlined his vision for India and for the partnership between the world’s two largest democracies in addressing global challenges, peace and stability in the world and supporting India`s economic transformation. Modi also highlighted the opportunities for partnership in trade, investment, skill development, agro-processing, youth empowerment, among others, the statement said. The prime minister also emphasized the need for developed countries to understand the challenges of poverty in developing countries.

he United States reached out to the new Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising to partner it in its vision of “Sabka saath sabka vikas or development for all”, even as India raised the issue of America’s cyber snooping and termed it unacceptable between friends. Visiting U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” is similar to that expressed by U.S. President Barack Obama and that the U.S. private sector is eager to be a catalyst to the India growth story. On India’s opposition on the process of implementing the WTO’s Bali agreement, which it feels will impact the country’s food security programme, Kerry hoped that New Delhi would soften its stand and end the impasse on reaching an agreement. “We are urging our friends in India on the way for compromise that is achievable, and we hope that it is achievable,” the US•Secretary of State said. India has so far said that its position on the issue continues to remain the same.

India, US to discuss ‘converging interests’ in Asia-Pacific IANS, NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON

S

trategic partners India and the United States will hold talks on defense cooperation and their “converging interests” in the Asia-Pacific region, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country next month. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will discuss with Defense Minister Arun Jaitley strengthening bilateral defense cooperation, including co-production and codevelopment, research and new technologies, trade and military exercises. Hagel is likely to call on the prime minister and will meet other Indian leaders during his three-day visit beginning on August 7.

Both sides will discuss the situation in Afghanistan, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby. The two countries held a round of strategic dialogue this week and Hagel’s visit is another step in the American efforts to prepare for Modi’s visit to the White House next month. Kirby said the election of the new Indian government “offers an opportunity to fulfil the potential of our strategic partnership.” Secretary Hagel’s meetings will focus on the United States’ and India’s converging interests in the Asia-Pacific. In a wide-ranging policy speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore in May, Hagel had said his visit to India was

aimed at “transformational cooperation” with the country which is playing an “active role” in strength-

ening security in Asia. “We welcome India’s increasingly active role in Asia’s regional

institutions, which strengthens regional order. We also welcome India’s growing defense capabilities and its commitment to freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean.” To further strengthen U.S.-India defense ties, “I plan to play an active and very personal role in expanding this (Defense Trade and Technology) initiative because it is a centerpiece of America’s defense cooperation with India, and it should reflect the trust and confidence President Obama and I have in our nation’s relationship with India.”Hagel will deliver a speech at the Observer Research Foundation in which he is expected to talk about the converging interests and the enormous opportunities to be capitalized upon in the region.

Rahul in action, takes jibe at Modi After Rahul Gandhi’s uncharacteristic outburst against Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting that “only one man’s voice counts for anything,” BJP reacts sharply IANS, NEW DELHI

C

ongress vice president Rahul Gandhi on August 6 led party MPs to the speaker’s podium to protest against the government not agreeing to an immediate discussion on the increasing communal clashes in the country. Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an uncharacteristic way a combative Rahul gandhi said: “There is a mood in parliament that only one man’s voice counts for anything in this country and only one voice is being heard.” As soon as the house met, the opposition parties led by the Congress raised slogans demanding a debate on the communal incidents and sought introduction of the bill against communal violence. Minutes later, Gandhi led a group

Summons against Sonia, Rahul stalled NEW DELHI: In a major relief to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party vice president Rahul Gandhi, the Delhi High Court on August 6 put on hold a trial court’s summons to them in the case over acquisition of the National Herald. Justice V.P. Vaish suspended the trial court order till August 13, when it will hear arguments in the bunch of petitions filed by the Congress leaders challenging the lower court order. Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Sonia Gandhi, sought to quash the trial court proceedings, saying: “Every decision of the magistrate at every point is erroneous.” “These are unfortunate proceedings against a party that is seeking to revive a newspaper, which is associated with the Congress party for over 80 years. Courts must be extremely careful in scrutinising the matter in the case,” he said. Sibal refuted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy’s claim that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as majority shareholders of Young Indian Ltd. (YIL), benefited from the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd. (AJL). He clarified that YIL was a Section 25 company, which is in the nature of a society, and its shareholders do not get any dividend, salary or benefit. Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rahul Gandhi, argued that the shareholders of YIL had no ownership of the properties of AJL. “The properties owned by AJL in Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, and Panchkula are under government leases, except for one property in Lucknow which is under a long-term lease to a charitable eye hospital,” Singhvi said.

of Congress parliamentarians to the speaker’s podium, following which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the house. Later, talking to mediapersons after coming out of the house, Gandhi accused the speaker of not allowing the opposition to speak. “We are asking for a discussion but there is a mentality in the government that discussion is not acceptable,” Gandhi said. Refuting Rahul’s charges, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said she was following the rules of the house and was not ignoring the opposition as was alleged by Con-

gress vice president Rahul Gandhi. “There is a procedure laid down to run the house and I am following the rules... it is my attempt to give equal opportunities to members of all the parties in the house,” Mahajan told media persons outside parliament. Reacting strongly to Rahul Gandhi’s attack on Prime Minister Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said they were making an issue out of a non-issue. “Why has Congress made an issue of this non-issue? Reason is clear, a section of the party, unable to lead, is facing a palace coup,” he said.

ndian American politician Neel Kashkari, running for the post of California governor, spent a week posing as a penniless man looking for a job, in an attempt to highlight the importance of jobs in the key U.S. state’s weak economy. The Republican is seen in a 10minute video stopping in a thrift store in California’s Fresno city, a mini-mart and a repair shop asking for work and sleeping on park benches, a report in the New York Times said.

Kashkari is the Republican Party’s candidate against current Democrat Governor Jerry Brown who is running for a fourth term as governor of

as he spent a week posing as a homeless man looking for a job. In the video, released by him, Kashkari is left with no prospects for cash after five days on the streets and appears bereft. “The solution is simple — it’s jobs. It’s not more welfare. It’s not more food stamps. It’s jobs. And we know how to do this,” he says in his message in the video. “Everything starts with education and jobs,” Kashkari told NYT. “We talk about temporary help, but if the bridge is a bridge to nowhere, what does it matter? There has to be land, and that land has to be a job.”

NEW YORK: Reacting to the incident of a young Sikh being hit and dragged by a truck in New York after hurling racial abuses at him, North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has written to Congressman John Garamendy, chair, American Sikh Congressional Caucus, seeking FBI investigation into the incident.” Sandeep Singh, 29, is stated to be in serious condition and has been admitted at a hospital in New York. “Such incidents of hate crimes are an eye opener for all of us. After 9/11, members of the Sikh community have been innocent victims of hate crimes due to one or other reason. This requires dissemination of information about cultural, dressing and other practices of various religions in schools, colleges, churches and other social gatherings,” NAPA executive director Sat-

nam Singh Chahal wrote in his communique to Congressman Garamendy on August 4. “This is not the first racial attack on American Sikhs. This attack on a Sikh is a hate crime and the incident should be investigated by the FBI,” Chahal wrote. Sandeep, along with his friend Baldev Singh, was standing on the street when the driver of the truck pulled up near them. Baldev later told that the driver yelled racial slurs at them. During the argument, Sandeep, annoyed at the driver, hit the truck with his hand. — IANS

Has Modi sent Advani into exile? Modi’s bulldozing tactics involving some of the old faithful not only herald the dawn of a new era in the BJP but also signal the end of old-world civility for the sake of cold political calculations AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

n the Hindu way of life, old age entails exile from home and hearth. As the Manu Smriti says, when a man sees “his skin wrinkled and his hair gray and when he sees the son of his son, then he should resort to the forest”. Narendra Modi seems to be following this precept for the elderly in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at least in terms of political ostracism though not in the form of banishment from the material comforts of life. While some senior citizens have been compensated for keeping their faith in the party through good times and bad times by their nomination to gubernatorial posts, others, including the more ambitious ones, have been kept waiting in the wings. Among them are the old war horses — L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi — who had once sent shivers down secular spines by venturing forth in a ‘rath’ (chariot) to “liberate” holy shrines from Muslim possession, or rewriting history to bring it in line with the saffron interpretations of the past. Of the two, Advani’s fate can make one ponder over the vagaries of life. Two decades ago, he was the undisputed No. 2 in the BJP if only because his fiery rhetoric as a chariot-rider was considered a disadvantage where leading a multicultural nation was concerned. So, the job of prime minister went to the man who was seen to be more in sync with India’s pluralist ethos, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. As a believer in astrology, like most people in the saffron clan, Advani must wonder what concate-

nation of heavenly bodies ensured that the coveted prize, from which he thought he was just one step away, would elude him forever. In politics, as in life, “there is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries”. In Advani’s case, his present marginalization reflects this waning of the tide. True, he may be made the president after Pranab Mukherjee’s term is over. But it is possible that the pomp and circumstance of the ceremonial post will not make up for the adrenalin rush of real power which the prime minister wields. As he contemplates what might have been, Advani will probably wonder about the mysterious ways Lal Krishna Advani (right) has seemingly paid the price for his peevish opposition to Narendra Modi’s ascent. of providence which enabled someone, who was a marginal figure Jaswant Singh, was turfed out of his Advani wanted the anointment of when he was riding high on his family’s pocket borough of Barmer Modi to be put off till after the Somnath-to-Ayodhya rath in 1990, LK by a Congress interloper, Colonel assembly elections in December to ascend to the PM’s position with Sonaram, who had joined the BJP were over, the octogenarian has widespread acclaim as he sulked in Advani can at shortly before the elections because made no secret of his own desire to the background. least have the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s be the Prime Minister although he Advani can at least have the limited satisfaction of limited satisfaction of having equations with the former union cannot have been unaware that he been allowed by Modi to contest having been allowed by finance and external affairs minis- had little support within the party from his old seat of Gandhina- Modi to contest from his ter were said to be not very cordial. since his candidature for the post in gar. n IIT-Kanpur alumnus did something unusual on returning to India in the 1980s with a Ph.D. degree from the U.S. — shunning a lucrative career with a multinational to use his knowledge to develop technologies to solve problems faced by villagers. He now shares his experiences in an e-book, intended to inspire youth to follow his path. Anil K. Rajvanshi joined the Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), an NGO working in Maharashtra’s Phaltan, after returning to India in 1981. NARI’s work has been extensively written about and Rajvanshi is winner of several awards including the Distinguished Alumnus

Rajvanshi said the e-book presents a brief history of renewable energy work carried out at NARI since 1981. Each of its six chapters, ends with a list of ideas useful for people who are planning to develop a career in research and development (R&D) for rural areas, while the last gives a roadmap for the future development of rural India On NARI’s accomplishments, he said it has “done pioneering work in all aspects of renewable energy affecting the lives of rural population like alcohol produc-

Rajvanshi said the aim of the book is to inspire youngsters to enter the field of rural innovation. “It provides them a whole list of challenging ideas for research and development (R&D) to uplift rural life,” Rajvanshi told IANS. “The book also shows that very meaningful and satisfying R&D work can be done with meagre resources and fewer people in a

small rural setting,” the former IITian added. “I hope it will provide inspiration to other NGOs who want to do a similar type of work,” he said, adding the remarkable achievement by NARI in the face of tremendous adversity is an indication that it is possible to make progress in rural India if a large number of youngsters follow the path shown by NARI.” On why he did not make your book a priced publication, Rajvanshi said there is a “tremendous need to inspire and get bright young engineers for rural R&D” and he felt making the book available free may help in this effort. an atmosphere of utmost warmth and cordiality and were marked by deep friendship and understanding”. The two prime ministers “expressed satisfaction over the excellent state of Nepal-India relations (and) underlined the need to further explore ways to enhance sub-regional cooperation”. On the political front, Modi asked political parties to work together for a new inclusive constitution that satisfies all sections of Nepal. He also emphasized the need for greater economic cooperation between the two countries that share a common culture, history and civilization. “The PM (told) leaders to work for the betterment of the nation, not for their parties,” Akbaruddin said shortly before Modi departed in his Indian Air Force plane at the head of a 75-strong delegation.

A new beginning, says PM Modi Narendra Modi mesmerizes NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 4 said India and Nepal have laid the foundation for a new relationship which will draw strength from deep ancient links between the two countries and prepare them to together address the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. In his statement on arrival from Nepal, Modi said he felt deeply honored with the privilege to speak to the members of the himalayan nation’s Constituent Assembly and the visit had moved him. Modi said he had returned from “two memorable days in Kathmandu” and thanked President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, political parties and people of Nepal for the “extraordinary warmth and affection” with which he was welcomed in Nepal. “It made feel as though I had come home. This experience has moved me and added another dimension to my personal relationship with Nepal,” he said. Modi said that during his visit, he felt a strong urge for “political stability and economic prosperity” for everyone he met in Nepal.

KATHMANDU: Flying in to Kathmandu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he wanted to forge a “new relationship” with Nepal that could serve as a model for regional partnership in South Asia. After his two-day visit, it is apparent he has succeeded to a large extent and opened in his own words a “new chapter” in ties with the Himalayan republic. Modi connected well at the popular level and engaged the political leadership, holding talks not just with his counterpart Sushil Koirala but with the broad spectrum of leaders across the political divide in the country that is still struggling to establish constitutional democracy. He unequivocally said India will respect Nepal’s sovereignty and would not interfere in its internal affairs, an accusation made especially by the Maoists. He also made it amply clear that India is all for revising and updating the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty, thereby taking the wind out of the sail of a large number of Nepali politicians who say it is tilted in favor of India. Modi also extended India’s helping hand in Nepal’s socio-economic development.

Modi set to unfurl tricolor at Red Fort Prime Minister’s focus in the August 15 address from the iconic Red Fort is expected to be on infrastructure development, skill development, job creation, control of inflation and building of 100 ‘smart’ cities across country IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to choose Hindi over English when he addresses the nation after unfurling the tricolor from the ramparts of historic Red Fort on August 15. The Prime Minister has already made it clear that he wants to speak in Hindi during his conversation with all foreign delegates. He has already said that as Modi speaks to world leaders over the next few months and addresses the United Nations General Assembly at the end of September, the language he will be speaking is not the Queen’s language but Hindi. Many of his core supporters in the Bharatiya Janata Party are in favor of “Modi being Modi” and speaking in Hindi, the official added. “Backing his likely adoption of Hindi as his language of diplomatic communication, officials say Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe speaks English fluently but only speaks in Japanese in official diplomatic engagements. Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang is also comfortable in English but prefers to speak in Chinese with world

Narendra Modi

leaders. “Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks German fluently, but talks in Russian to Chancellor Angela Merkel during bilateral talks,” said the official. Atal Behari Vajpayee addressed the UN assembly in Hindi when

Modi’s first address to nation from Red Fort will be watched keenly as he has outlined that his priority area would be ‘good governance’ he was foreign minister in the Morarji Desai-led Janata Dal government in the late 1970s. Meanwhile, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his maiden Independence Day address, various ministries have been asked to furnish by this month end details of programs in different sectors which could form part of his

speech, possibly in the form of announcements. The Prime Minister’s focus in the August 15 address from the iconic Red Fort is expected to be on infrastructure development, skill development, job creation, control of inflation and building of 100 smart cities across the country. The Finance Ministry has written to other ministries and departments asking them to outline the roadmap for implementation of the Budget proposals and new schemes that could be launched, sources said here today. The Cabinet secretariat will assess these inputs and important decisions will be taken before August 10 regarding what will form part of the address, the sources said. Modi’s first address to the nation from the historic monument will be watched keenly as he has outlined that his priority areas would be ‘good governance’ and development, the planks on which BJP got a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Outlining its vision in the President’s Address to Parliament, the Modi government had said it will revive ‘Brand India’, riding on its strengths of five ‘T’s — tradition, talent, tourism, trade and technology — and pursue foreign policy on the basis of “enlightened nationalism” and mutually beneficial relationships.

Higher growth returns to Indian IT industry IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he resilient $270-billion plus Indian IT industry returned to the higher growth trajectory and is hoping to gain momentum in the coming months for a greater share of the global multi-billion dollar outsourcing market. The industry consolidated its presence in the software services sector, with its top four IT bellwethers — TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCL — posting better results to register a healthy 12-14 percent growth thus far as against 10 percent last fiscal (2012-13). “We have seen a significant increase in global technology spending this year, creating opportunities for the Indian software services sector to post double digit growth again in export as well as in the domestic markets,” a top industry representative said. The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) is expecting the industry to clock export rev-

enues of $84-87 billion this fiscal as against $76 billion last fiscal. In the Indian market, the industry is, expected to grow marginally year-on-year at 14 percent to post `1.2 trillion this fiscal from `1.05 trillion last fiscal. “We have decided not to revise our estimates and stick to the 12-14 percent growth forecast for this fiscal though the sector has faced headwinds due to slow recovery in its major export markets — the U.S. and Europe,” Nasscom’s outgoing president Som Mittal told IANS. The Indian IT industry comprises domestic firms, captive centers of multinationals, global industry classification standards (GICs) and industry sectors providing software and hardware services, business process outsourcing (back office operations), engineering and research and development (ER&D) and products. Indian IT and ITeS industry is divided into four major segments — IT services, business process management (BPM), software products and engineering services, and hardware. According to data released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), the computer software and hardware sector attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth `59,3816.4 million between April 2000 and February 2014.

Aamir’s ‘PK’ in poster trouble

The poster of ‘PK’ shows the star in the nude except for a radio set IANS, MUMBAI

A

case was filed in a court in Kanpur on August 2 against Aamir Khan and the producer and director of new movie PK after its poster showed the Bollywood star in the nude except for a transistor covering his private parts. In the complaint, lawyer Manoj Dixit accused the actor, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani of promoting nudity and vulgarity. The film is scheduled for release in December. The court listed the case for August 7 when the contention of the petitioner would be heard and, if needed, the producer, director and actor

Salman Khan ‘Kick’s out Aamir’s ‘3 Idiots’

MUMBAI: Priyanka Chopra, who plays the lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s coproduction Mary Kom, seems to be the filmmaker’s latest muse. It was Aishwarya Rai who at one time inspired Sanjay Leela Bhansali to make a trilogy of great films — Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Guzaarish. Even Priyanka especially flew into Mumbai to attend the first-look event for Mary Kom and to attend a special birthday party hosted by the filmmaker for her recently. A source close to Bhansali said: “Never in his life would Sanjay have dreamt of hosting a party for anyone in his house. In fact, he has never had a party in his house.”

‘Amit Sahni Ki List’ an endearing rom com Film: ‘Amit Sahni Ki List’ Cast: Vir Das, Vega Tomatia, Anindita Nayar and Kavi Shastri; Director: Ajay Bhuyan; Rating: ***1/2

IANS, NEW DELHI

S

ajid Khan’s Kick has entered the prestigious `2000 million club and toppled a few records on the way. The film smashed Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots tally in the Indian market, making it Salman Khan’s biggest hit in the domestic market. This is also Salman’s biggest hit in the domestic market. Kick, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jacqueline Fernandes, Nargis Fakhri and Mithun Chakraborty, made record opening collections of `264 million — the highest this year.

S

‘Entertainment’ is Akki’s ‘buddy for life’ MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar is not known to fraternize with his co-stars beyond the sets and locations, but the Bollywood star has made an exception for his furry friend from the movie Entertainment. As one of Akshay’s most favorite co-stars Katrina Kaif once said: “He is a lot like me. We are both very friendly on the sets. But after pack-up, we like to head straight home.”

will be served notice to appear before it. The petitioner said Aamir Khan has considerable influence on the youth of today and any such act would only tempt youths to emulate him, thereby threatening the social order. This in turn, he added, would lead to cases of sexual offenses. Many newspapers had printed posters of the forthcoming movie in which Aamir Khan is reportedly playing an alien. Meanwhile, the PK poster seems inspired or rather copied from a poster, which was released by a Portuguese musician named Quim Barreiros way back in 1973. The musician had released the poster for his album’s promotions where he uses an accordion to hide his private parts. In his PK poster we see Aamir Khan pose the same way behind a stereo system.

PeeCee new muse of Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

That’s no longer true. On the sets of Entertainment, Akshay found a new buddy. Speaking fondly of the doggie, Akshay said: “His name in the film is ‘Entertainment’ and he and I will be buddies for life.” “I would spend a lot of time off-camera playing with him. As soon as he accepted it, we were pals and not just costars. He’d let me sleep on his belly at break times.”

urprises, they say, come in small packages. I went into this odd-sounding film Amit Sahni Ki List, honestly, with zero expectations. I came out pleasantly surprised, bathed in the scent of an ambrosial rom-com filled with endearing nooks and corners secreting a kind of cosmic view of man-woman relationship that affords both humor and sadness. The rom-com as genre is perpetually misunderstood and misinterpreted in Bollywood. Not this time. Okay, so what’s the list about? It’s a to-do thingy prepared by our everyman-hero, a regular highincome guy on Facebook, played by the very engaging Vir Das. Amit has put together a list (yes, an actual handwritten list) of the qualities that he wants in his soul-mate. Life of course has other plans. Before he meets his Dream Woman (or DW, as Amit’s acronym-obsessed mom would say), he runs into the adventurous

An uncluttered, elegantly narrated rom- com about an flawed hero bohemian dog-loving bungeejumping Mala (Vega Tamotia). Their courtship is done with a colorful candor that is not blindingly romantic. The couple sing, dance, run across fields...but with a warning signal playing somewhere invisibly saying, “Babe, bumps ahead”. Suffice it to say that the dips and curves in the narrative all add up to an experience that leaves

us smiling and sometimes chuckling. Amit Sahni Ki List is not a great piece of cinema. It doesn’t aspire to have any lofty heights of tragic romanticism (a la “Ek Villain”). It is what it is. An uncluttered, elegantly narrated rom-com about an inherently flawed hero, so confused about his aspirations as a romantic entity that he ends up wallowing in the kind of giddy romanticism that he probably abhors in the movies that he sees. As directed by Ajay Bhuyan (some significant talent here), the life and loves of Amit Sahni is both a celebration and mockery of romantic idealism.

It’s been too many years now that you all are asking me the same question ... I am bored now.” The actor also took a dig at Aamir Khan starrer PK film’s poster at the announcement of the Got Talent World Stage Live. When the host of the show Mini Mathur asked Shah Rukh if he wanted to show his hidden talent under his belt which was not known to the people yet and he wanted to show the world, SRK said: “Now it’s getting vulgar...show the world what you have under the belt (laughs)...muje aisa laga PK poster ki baat kar rahe hai hum.” When a reporter asked whether Shah Rukh has seen Aamir’s talent by shedding his clothes on PK poster, SRK said: “Idhar talent bola teek hai but isse talent mat bolna.” Aamir Khan’s PK poster shows the actor in the buff holding a radio set.

Nothing sustains forever:

Kailash on Yo Yo NEW DELHI: Yo Yo Honey Singh’s rap songs are a rage, but people have also criticized them for their crass lyrics. Playback singer and composer Kailash Kher feels it’s all a phase as every place has “good and bad things” and “Hindi music industry has quality content too”. Asked about his reaction to Honey Singh’s popularity amongst youth, Kher told IANS: “It’s no big deal, it is a phase, it will also pass on. What happens is we make too many opinions and judgments about things. Nothing survives and nothing sustains forever except love and purity. “Today we are in one phase, tomorrow we will be in another. Whatever you are marketing or writing about too much, would also reflect in creating the phase. People are liking and disliking everything and anything. “There are good and bad things today. If the type of music you are naming is being loved, then rest of the musicians should be at home and should be unemployed,” the singer-composer said.

EMIRATES TOUCHES DOWN IN CHICAGO BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) – Emirates, a global connector of people, places and economies, has commenced a daily nonstop passenger service to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. A joint VIP delegation from the US and Dubai was aboard the inaugural flight on August 5 as well as a contingent of international media. The flight carried passengers from more than 20 different countries to Chicago, demonstrating how Emirates connects people across the globe. “The Chicago route extends our passenger network to America’s thirdlargest city and complements our existing dedicated freighter service that operates to O’Hare,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates executive vice-president and chief operations officer. “The launch of this route will enable us to offer Emirates’ unique product and award-winning service to passengers flying to and from the Midwest to our home in Dubai or onwards to more than 140 global destinations including the Far East, Africa and India.” “Launching Chicago-Dubai nonstop passenger service is another important

step in establishing Chicago as one of the top tourism destinations in the world and achieving our goal of hosting 55 million visitors by 2020,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Increasing access to other parts of the world creates opportunities for travelers and businesses,” Illinois Governor Pat Quinn said. “2013 was a record year for tourism in Illinois, and this new nonstop flight will build on the advances we have made. It will also help Illinois stay competitive in the global economy and give our businesses new opportunities to expand their markets and create jobs.”

The new service will operate as flight EK235, departing from Dubai International Airport at 9:45 a.m. and arriving at O’Hare at 3:25 p.m. The return flight, EK236, will depart O’Hare at 8:35 p.m. and arrive in Dubai at 7:10 p.m. the next day. The route will be served by the US-built Boeing 777-200LR aircraft powered by GE90 engines. Emirates began passenger service to the US in 2004 with service to New York. The airline has steadily added more US routes over the past decade. Chicago is the ninth US gateway to join the Emirates network, following the launch of Boston service in March. In the past decade, Emirates has flown more than 9 million people to and from the US and carries the most passengers between the US and Middle East. Chicago is home to 2.7 million residents. The broader Chicago metropolitan area has the third-largest gross domestic product in the US and is home to approximately 400 corporate headquarters, including Fortune 500 companies such as McDonald’s Corp., Walgreen Co., Abbott Laboratories and Boeing Co., the world’s largest aerospace company.

EFFORTS ON TO CHECK UNDER-AGE DRINKING BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- Members of the City Council voted last week to adopt a resolution which establishes an Interagency Working Group for implementing family and community support services for underage substance abuse. This resolution will assist in maximizing coordination regularly across city agencies to increase collaboration on key issues relating to substance abuse prevention and treatment, including under-age drinking. Sponsored by 12th ward Alderman Cardenas, the resolution was proposed by the Be United multi-collaborative which comprises substance abuse community coalitions from 3 Chicago southside neighborhoods - Back-of-the Yards (Families Against Drugs in Area 58), Brighton Park (Peace and Education Coalition) and Chinatown (Asian Health Coalition and the Coalition for Asian Substance Abuse Prevention). “Underage drinking can only be solved through a cooperative effort from

government stakeholders working together with members of the community including social service organizations, community and business leaders, local media, and schools,” said Alia Ryan, Substance Abuse Program Manager at the Asian Health Coalition. “Everyone has part, and this resolution will bring the key change agents to the table” she further added. The Asian Health Coalition (AHC), along with members from the Coalition for Asian Substance Abuse Prevention (CASAP), have implemented grassroots prevention efforts to fight the problems of under-age drinking in the Chinatown neighborhood. These efforts include reducing retail access to alcohol among minors by working with law enforcement to conduct party patrols and compliance checks. Officers from the Chicago Police Department (CPD) have been patrolling the neighborhood to break up parties where under-age drinking is known to occur during peak periods including graduation, and festive events.

Four party patrols have been conducted in Chinatown just in the past 6 months alone which have resulted in 22 citations. In addition, the CPD has also conducted compliance checks in retail establishments to identify liquor establishments that serve or sell illegally to minors. 49 local businesses in Chinatown were inspected this year and 6 businesses were found to be non-compliant. The Asian Health Coalition and CASAP members have been working to provide merchant education to these businesses. “These enforcement efforts are a strong reminder that we take the safety of our young people in Chinatown seriously, and we want to protect youth from harmful and risky behaviors associated with under-age drinking”, said Dr David Lee, coalition member and co-Chair for CASAP. The substance abuse program is supported by the Illinois Department of Human Services, the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, and Asian Health Coalition.

the Vedas, Upanishads, Sanskrit Grammar and Astrology. Dr. Archika Sudhanshu, is a master of ‘Powerful Silence Meditation’. SECRETS OF SPIRITUAL SADHANA - NATURE OF THE SELF BY MUKUNDANANDA SWAMI

C

HICAGO (IL) -- When you look at your family album, you find the picture of a newborn baby, and you say, “That is me.” Then you see the picture of a two-year old, and you say, “That is me.” Then there is a picture of a five-year old, and you say, “That is also me.” Now, who are you? The body is continuously changing. Biology teaches us that the body consists of trillions of cells. These cells keep dying while new ones are created in their place. The process of regeneration changes the whole body within a period of seven years. Yet, despite the constantly changing body, one remains the same person. The Vedas teach us that within the body is the unchanging ātmā, or soul. That is the real “I,” the real self. The body is material, while the ātmā is spiritual and immortal, like God. The real “I” called the soul or atma is seated within this body, and we are actually not this body. It is false sense of identification with our body that makes us feel that I am a boy, a lady, a teacher, American etc. But we really are just souls wearing different bodies. The nature of ātmā or soul has been a topic of immense curiosity for anyone who comes across this subject. Therefore the Vedic scriptures further explain that the ātmā is extremely tiny and is seated in the region of the heart. “The soul is situated in the heart.” Yet,

it is not locked to the heart. During a hearttransplant, the soul would continue to reside in the heart region, even if the heart were removed and replaced. Situated in one place, the soul spreads its consciousness throughout the body. This is just as a light-bulb remains in one place, while its light spreads throughout the room. The soul too, while being seated in the heart, enlivens the entire body. Now a likely question arises, “why can we not see the soul?” As already mentioned the soul and body are different from each other because the former is spiritual or divine and the latter is material. Our scriptures state that the material eyes, nose, tongue and skin can only grasp material objects. However the ātmā is beyond the material realm, so it cannot be perceived by any of the senses. Also one can prove the existence of soul by the presence of consciousness in the body. It is a fact that the material body functions as

G N I M O C P U

long as the soul imparts energy of life to it, but the moment it leaves, the same body is declared dead. Hence, the symptom of the soul is life, or consciousness. When the soul leaves the body it is not the soul that dies, it merely changes its body. For the soul, there is no birth or death. Upon someone’s death, some bury the body and assume that the person is lying in the grave. However, the soul is not in the grave; it has left for its destination to another body. What is buried in the grave will soon be eaten by worms and turn into mud. In the Indian tradition, the body is not buried after death. It is burnt and prayers are offered for the departed soul. As we unfold the mystery of our soul, the next apparent question is, “where does the soul go once it leaves its body?” An interesting thing to note at this point is that the soul does not exist alone as the All-knowing God always resides with the soul. Hence the God keeps an account of all the actions of the soul and upon death gives their results. Most people are living in a state of forgetfulness of their “self.” If you ask car drivers to introduce themselves and they say, “I am a Mercedes,” “I am a Ford,” “I am a Toyota,” etc. you will think it to be gross ignorance. You have asked the drivers for their introduction and they are introducing the cars in which they are seated. Similarly, people are confusing the body to be themselves. But this body will be left

behind one day. When someone dies, people say, “He left the world.” Who has left the world, when the body is lying in the hospital bed? Intuitively they realize that the person was not the body, and hence he is no longer present in the world. Most people are in the confusion that bodily happiness is their happiness. They keep planning, “What should I eat to become happy? What should I see to become happy? What should I hear to become happy?” They think that if they get the objects of the bodily senses, this will give them happiness. However, no matter how much they try the soul within remains unsatisfied. They spend their entire lives searching for happiness and yet find no satisfaction. The simple logic is that the body is material and the world is also material. Worldly happiness enjoyed through the body can never satisfy the soul. If you take a fish out of the water, you may massage it in scented oil and put food down its throat, but this will never make it happy. The poor fish cannot speak, but if it could, it would say, “I do not want all this. If you want to make me happy, then put me back into the water.” The soul is divine, and is a part of God. The happiness it is seeking will also be attained only from God. If we can understand this simple logic, then we will make God-realization the goal of our lives. This is what the Vedic scriptures and all the religions of the world ask us to do.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 2014 MIDWEST EDITION

India should be happy with CWG returns With 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze, India bagged 64 medals and came fifth in the tally; England topped with 58 gold VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI

I

f you take away 2010 New Delhi, the benchmark for India at the Commonwealth Games has been 2002 Manchester when they crossed the 50-medal mark for the first time by ending up with 69 medals, 30 of them gold. Before the Indians left for Glasgow, the expectations were pegged at somewhere between Manchester tally and 2006 Melbourne where they touched exactly 50. So, 64 should be taken as a reasonably happy figure, considering the turmoil the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has gone through over the last four years. Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt made sure that Indian wrestling continues to be on the upswing and, in all, five gold and six silver and two bronze were sure-

Charges dropped against officials GLASGOW: India’s two sports officials, who were arrested on August 2, were released two days later after charges against them were dropped . Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general Rajeev Mehta was arrested for driving without a valid licence while senior international referee Virender Malik was arrested on charges of sexual assault. The charges were dropped after senior Indian officials intervened and the matter didn’t come up for hearing at the Sheriff’s court. They were not part of the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games but were in Glasgow in their official capacity. — IANS

Warm welcome for Dipika, Joshna CHENNAI: Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa, winners of India’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games squash competitions, were accorded a rousing welcome on their arrival here from Glasgow, Scotland, early on August 5. Coach Maj S. Maniam and players Anaka Alankamony and Harinder Singh Sandhu accompanied Pallikal and Chinappa, both Chennai-based, but others Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar and coach Bhuvaneshari Kumari had re-routed their journey to their respective homes in Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. Coaches from the Indian Squash Academy (ISA), led by National coach Cyrus Poncha, were in attendance with garlands to greet and welcome the team members and officials. Parents and other squash enthusiasts were also present to welcome the players. Poncha said: “We had realized after the Delhi CWG four years ago that concentrating on doubles could be our

ly impressive. Vinesh Phogat and Babita Kumari brought in a pair of gold from the women’s section. The last day for India at Glasgow was a replication of what happened in 2010. If Saina Nehwal won the

women’s singles badminton gold, Parupalli Kashyap pulled off the men’s singles final. Like Kashyap, discus thrower Vikas Gowda was another great athlete brought into focus when he won an athletics Gold after 56

years when Milkha Singh won the 440 yards at Cardiff in 1958. There was also a flush of medals from weightlifting. The lifters won 12 medals that included three gold, four silver and five bronze. Abhinav Bindra has shown that he is not for nothing among the world’s best by winning his 10m air rifle gold, his first at the quadrennial event. He had his ups and downs after the Beijing Olympic gold, but he showed his mettle. The boxers performed well to make four finals but none could land gold and that was a big disappointment.

best bet. And with Joshna and Dipika in the top rung in the world rankings, the bet was on them. Poncha pointed out that the players realized the importance of taking advantage of the shorter tin height and a reflection of their growing confidence came in the tri-nation series in Malaysia in June where India won the women’s (Joshna and Dipika) and the mixed doubles (Ghosal and Dipika) titles while New Zealand won the men’s doubles title. — IANS

arupalli Kashyap broke a 32-year jinx to claim the men’s singles badminton gold, while the women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa as also the men’s hockey team clinched silvers to cap an creditable Indian showing at the 20th Commonwealth Games which closed on August 3. It was India’s third best showing in the Commonwealth Games after the 100 plus bounty at home in Delhi four years back and the 69 medals they picked up at Manchester in 2002. But the day’s hero for India was second seed Kashyap, who emulated former champions Prakash Padukone (1978) and Syed Modi (1982) to win the men’s singles title. The 27-year-old clinched his first major championship by defeating Singaporean sixth seed Zi Liang Derek Wong 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 in just over an hour at the Emirates Arena. Kashyap raced away with the first game, but Wong fought back into the match by taking the second.

Parupalli Kashyap with his gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The rivals went neck-and-neck in the decider but that did not stop both from playing aggressively. It remained extremely close until Kashyap took the lead for the first time in the game (15-14) since leading 4-3 at the start. Buoyed by a large Indian support base who were cheering for Kashyap with shouts of “India jeetega”, he gained momentum and extended the lead to 19-16. The

Hyderabadi displayed some nervy moments when he lost three consecutive points to make it 19-all but then stuck it out to win the next two points and clinch the gold. Much was expected from Jwala and Ashwini but they had to be content with the silver, losing the final 17-21, 21-23 to Malaysian second seeds Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon.

Jaya in Lanka article row

An article about Tamil Nadi CM Jayalalithaa’s letters to PM Modi published on Sri Lanka’s defense ministry website evokes protests by MPs; Sri Lankan envoy to be summoned IANS, CHENNAI/NEW DELHI

Lanka’s U-15 cricket team sent back

A

s MPs protested and disrupted both houses, the government condemned the article adding that the Sri Lankan high commissioner will be summoned over the issue. The objectionable article about Jayalalithaa’s letters to Modi was published on Sri Lanka’s defense ministry website last week, and was taken down in a hurry, after protests in Tamil Nadu. Sri Lanka also offered “unqualified apology” over the article. Both houses witnessed repeated adjournments over the issue. The Rajya Sabha saw two adjournments during the question hour, and AIADMK members trooped near the chairman’s podium to protest.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the government “condemned” the article (about Jayalalithaa).

CHENNAI: Sri Lanka’s Under-15 team that came here to play in the J.M. Haroon Cricket Tournament was sent back home on August 4 citing security reasons, the tournament’s organizer said. The Sri Lankan team arrived here on August 3. “The Sri Lankan boys checked in at a hotel. But they were immediately taken back to the airport by the police,” J.M. Haroon, the tournament’s organizer and a Congress leader, told IANS. “The police did not allow the team to stay in any other city hotel as well. The Sri Lankan boys spent the night at the airport,” Haroon added.

44 Kerala nurses back home from Libya

Two held over group photo in ISIS T-shirts

KOCHI: Kerala nurses evacuated from Libya, who arrived here on August 4, are so traumatized by their experience in the violence-hit country that as one of them said "words cannot describe our pain". Tears rolled down the cheeks of the nurses who met their relatives on arriving here at 8.50 a.m. The nurses, 44 of them, were first taken from Libya's capital city Tripoli to the Tunisian border and then to Dubai Monday evening. "Words cannot describe the nightmare that I underwent there and I don't have words also to describe my happiness when I met my husband and daughter," Nancy Elizabeth, a nurse, told IANS, breathing freedom at last. Libya has of late been seeing a violent power struggle among rival groups — the worst since after the fall of its leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Rival militias have been fighting around Tripoli international airport, attempting to take control of the airport. Elizabeth said: "I was in Libya for almost one year. All of us paid around `150,000 as recruitment fees to go there. I managed to get all my money, except last month's salary. The nurses working there are yet to get the gratuity and other benefits that come to around `200,000," said Elizabeth, who now plans to go to Delhi and find a job. A nurse said: "The journey to the Tunisian border by bus was a nightmarish one. It took about five hours to reach there. All of us were praying as we could hear gunshots. At one point, we saw two people being killed." Another nurse said the sounds of bombs and gunshots rattled them.

wo young men were arrested in Ramanthapuram district of Tamil Nadu after a photograph of a group of people posing in T-shirts with the emblem of the Sunni militant group ISIS went viral on social media. The two men, Abdul Rahman and Rilvan, have been charged with abetting insurgent activity and criminal conspiracy for ordering and distributing the T-shirts. The ISIS or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is a breakaway group of the Al Qaeda, which has captured large swathes of Iraq and Syria and have declared a Muslim “caliphate”. The two arrested men were active supporters of the ISIS and were seeking the support of others. They celebrated the cause of the ISIS by distributing T-shirts with the insurgent group’s emblem, a senior police officer said. But friends of the men arrested insist they have no links with the

The group photograph that led to the arrests was posted on Facebook about a week ago, just after Eid celebrations. ISIS. They claimed that the T-shirts were ordered only to celebrate the safe release of 46 Indian nurses held by the ISIS in the conflict zone in Iraq last month. The group photograph that led to the arrests was posted on Facebook about a week ago, just after Eid. In it, 26 men, including the two arrested, posed in the ISIS T-shirts near a

mosque in Thondi, a small town in the area. Abdul Rahman, 24, the police alleged, placed an order for 100 such T-shirts with a firm in Tirupur, through Rilvan. The police interrogated all the men in the photograph and said 24 were let off as they were found to be people who “collected the T-shirts in good faith.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu intervened and said the government “condemned” the article. “An article titled ‘How meaningful are Jayalalitha’s love letters to Narendra Modi?’ had appeared on our website along with a graphical portrayal of Hon. Prime Minister of India and Hon Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” read a statement hosted on the defense ministry’s website. It said that the article “which had been published without appropriate authorization and not reflecting any official position” of the Sri Lankan government or the defence ministry has since been removed. “We extend an unqualified apology to the Hon Prime Minister of India and Hon Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” it added.

Under flak, Goa Tourism cancels Spanish junket PANAJI: The Goa tourism ministry has cancelled a `40 million junket to Spain which was avowedly aimed at promoting religious tourism. The junket, comprising tourism ministry officials and legislators, among others, was scheduled to take off next month in order to promote the feast of Francis Xavier, a Spanish Saint who brought both Christianity and the Inquisition to Goa. In a reply to a question tabled Tuesday during the ongoing Monsoon session of the state legislative assembly, tourism minister Dilip Parulekar said there was no proposal for a trip to Spain for promotion of religious tourism. Xavier, who hailed from Navarra, in the Basque region of Spain was sent as an Apostolic Nuncio by the Pope in 1541 at the request of the King of Portugal. Xavier also brought the Spanish Inquisition to Goa, which saw tenets of the Christian religion imposed by force and violence on Goan subjects.

Renowned Marathi actor Smita Talwalkar is dead MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

R

enowned Marathi actor, director and theater personality Smita Talwalkar passed away early on August 6 at a private hospital where she was being treated for ovarian cancer, her doctor said. She was 59. Murlidhar Kamat, who was treating the actor, told IANS that she was first treated for the disease six years back. "It recurred after sometime and she was treated again. She responded quite well

and she faced this disease with great courage. Yesterday (August 5) she was very serious and this morning she passed away," he said. A winner of two National Awards, Talwalkar was the director of one of the country's largest fitness chains, ‘Talwalkars'. "Sad to hear about Smita Talwalkar. We lost a versatile actor and director. My tributes to her," reacted Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on her demise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the passing away of veteran film personality

Talwalkar. The Prime Minister said that her demise is a major loss to Marathi film industry. Modi recalled Talwalkar’s contribution to the Marathi film industry and prayed that her soul rests in peace. Starting her professional career as a television newsreader, some of Talwalkar's popular Marathi movies included Kalat Nakalat, Tu Tithe Mee, Prem Manjhe Prem Manjhe Asta, Chaukat Raja, Saatchya Aat Gharat and Sawat Majhi Ladki, besides several television serials and plays.

f we go by sleep experts, mattresses should be used for just two things — sleep and sex. But the reality is that consumers have turned their mattresses into reading nooks, home offices, music dens, TV stations and even dining rooms. Also, many people use smartphones, tablets and computers in their beds even late in the night. According to a study, 21 percent of Millennials — people who reached young adulthood around the year 2000 — and Baby Boomers — people born after the second world war between 1946-64 — report eating in bed once a in North CarolinaMillennials are week or more. based Furniture having more sex “Millennials Today magazine. are having more A total 61 on mattresses — sex on mattresspercent of baby once a week or es — once a boomers report more for 81 having sex once week or more a week or more. for 81 percent percent of The study of respondents respondents suggests that than 75 percent than 75 percent companies need to Gen Xers (people Gen Xers present the mattress born after 1964 till as much more than just the 70’s),” said a report

Adjustable beds are the future. “These enable consumers to customise their positions in bed, lifting the head for computer work, TV watching and reading, and perhaps elevating the feet to take some stress off the back,” the report added. Moreover, pillows give consumers a chance to create a custom comfort zone for their activity of the moment, the report concluded.

Are you a victim of fake fashion? admitted they don’t feel they possess the knowledge to accurately identify a counterfeit product from a genuine item. Fanny Moizant, cofounder of vestiairecollective.com, advises on how to spot a counterfeit. “The material can tell you a lot about the quality of an item, if it’s leather it should feel and smell like leather. If the item you’re inspecting is a bag, make sure you take a good look at the stitching, uneven or slanted stitching is a sign of a poorly made item and, therefore, a counterfeit,” she said.

Vestiairecollective.com has released a study that shows that 61 percent of women online marketplace shoppers have been misled into purchasing counterfeit designer goods, or knew at least one person who had bought a fake designer item through internet, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Social media obsession goes up when abroad LONDON: If posting, tweeting to tagging ourselves at different locations has become a trend, latest research says that many Britons become 16 times more addicted to social media while holidaying. ith a demanding boss, a long list of to-dos, and negative environment, you get stressed in office. Beat the stress by downloading an app or gorging on oranges. Huffingtonpost.com shares a list of ways to de-stress from work in office: n Take a two-minute mini vacation: Choose one of your favorite vacation memories and relive it without spending on the airfare! All of us have memories from our favorite places. You can relive the best moment of your life to feel like you did when you were there. It helps you recognize you have a choice in how you feel in a stressful moment. n Download a destressing app: Your smartphone might be partly to blame for the stress you’re feeli n g (non-

stop emails), but it’s also a great resource for de-stressing tools so try a couple of destressing apps. n Keep essential oils at your desk: A whiff or two could actually help you relax. Aromatherapy has been shown to decrease stress levels, so shop around for a scent you fancy and get sniffing. n Handwrite your to-do list: Think of your handwritten todo list as a sacred document. You’ll know exactly where to find it when you need to refer back to it since it won’t be lost among the many open tabs of your browser. Also, the act of physically writing down your tasks may help you organize your thoughts and remember them more clearly which, in turn, will help you to be more focused and less stressed. n Snack on an orange: A 2002 study found that a dose of vitamin C helped people bounce back from a stressful situation.

Video games make your kids better adjusted IANS, LONDON

Y

oung people who indulge in a little video game-playing are better adjusted than those who do not play at all or those who are on video games for three hours or more every day, suggests a study. When compared to non-players and those who played very frequently, those who played video games for less than an hour were associated with the highest levels of sociability and were most likely to say they were satisfied with their lives, the findings showed. They also appeared to have

fewer friendship and emotional problems, and reported less hyperactivity than the other groups. “High levels of video gameplaying appear to be only weakly linked to children’s behavioral problems in the real world,” said Andrew Przybylski from the Oxford University in Britain. “Likewise, the small, positive effects we observed for low levels of play on electronic games do not support the idea that video games on their own can help children develop in an increasingly digital world,” Przybylski said. The study suggests that the influence of video games on children, for good or for ill, is very small when compared with more “enduring” factors, such as whether the child is from a functioning family, their school relationships, and whether they are materially deprived. The study involved nearly 5,000 young people, half of them males and the remaining females, between 10 and 15 years old, from Britain.
