Obama slams Trump-era, calls ‘strongman politics’

Former US President Barack Obama peppered his speech with warnings against some of his successor’s key policies IANS, JOHANNESBURG (SOUTH AFRICA)

B

arack Obama has used his first high-profile speech since stepping down as US president to take swipes at “strongman politics” and politicians’ disregard for facts. Obama on July 17 mounted a passionate defense of democracy and warned against the politics of the day as his successor, Donald Trump, was heavily criticized for a humiliating news conference with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the BBC reported. In his address in honor of the late Nelson Mandela ahead of the 100th anniversary of his birth, Obama slammed populist movements toward authoritarianism around the world and ridiculed the

Sabraw temporarily halts deportation of reunited families SAN DIEGO: A US district judge in California ruled this week that President Donald Trump’s administration must wait at least a week before deporting immigrant families reunited after being separated at the border under the “zero tolerance” policy. Judge Dana Sabraw found in favor of a motion from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which said that it sought the injunction amid “persistent and increasing rumors that mass deportations may be carried out imminently and immediately upon reunification,” Efe news reported. The ACLU wants parents to be given a week after being reunited with their children to decide whether to apply for asylum in the United States. Sabraw’s ruling requires the government to suspend deportations until July 23 while he considers the ACLU brief and the Justice Department’s response. The Trump administration is still working to meet the July 26 deadline set by Sabraw for the return of nearly 3,000 children ages 5 and older who were taken from their parents at the border since the zero tolerance policy took effect in April. The policy calls for criminally prosecuting anyone caught entering the US illegally, which represents a sharp break from past practice. —IANS

“utter loss of shame among political leaders” who lie. Obama, who has made an art of criticizing Trump’s values without explicitly naming him, peppered his speech with warnings against some of his successor’s key policies, including protectionism, climate change denial and closed borders. “The politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment is on the move at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago,” he told the crowd of around 15,000 people in Johannesburg. “I am not being alarmist, I’m simply stating the facts. Strongman politics are ascendant, suddenly, whereby elections and some pretense of democracy are maintained,... those in powers seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning.”

His remarks followed Trump’s news conference in Helsinki, Finland, in which the US leader sided with Putin over his own country’s intelligence agencies on whether

Barack Obama mounted a passionate defense of democracy and warned against the politics of the day Russia interfered in the 2016 US election, the CNN reported. campaign, Trump sort of toed the Russian line. “You have to believe in facts. Without facts there’s no basis for cooperation. If I say this is a podium and you say this is an elephant, it’s going to be hard for us to cooperate,” he said. “I can’t find

common ground if somebody says that climate change just isn’t happening, when almost all the world’s scientists tell us it is. I don’t know where to start talking to you about this. If you say it’s an elaborate hoax, where do we start?”

No ‘time limit’ on N.Korea denuclearization: Trump IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has said there is “no time limit” for North Korea to denuclearize and there is no need to rush the process. It marks a shift in tone from Trump who previously said nuclear disarmament would start “very quickly”, BBC reported this week. Last month, Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held historic talks and pledged to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. The accord did not have a timetable for the process or plan to

US President Donald Trump

carry it out. Since the meeting between Trump and Kim on June 12, there has been little reported

progress towards denuclearization. Last week, North Korea accused the US of making “gangster-like” demands for the process, and branded the US attitude at highlevel talks as “extremely troubling”. Trump said this week that talks with Pyongyang were going fine. “We have no time limit. We have no speed limit,” the US president told reporters. “Discussions are ongoing, and they are going very, very well,” he said. “The sanctions are remaining. The hostages are back. There have been no tests. There have been no rockets going up for a period of nine months, and

I think the relationships are very good, so we’ll see how that goes.” The US president also said North Korea’s nuclear threat had been a major topic during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. “President Putin is going to be involved in the sense that he is with us,” Trump said. The US President’s latest comments on the timeline for denuclearization appear to shift from his position ahead of the summit with Kim, when he said denuclearization should start “without delay.”

White House buys two Air Force One planes IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he White House said this week it had signed a $3.9 billion contract with aircraft manufacturer Boeing to purchase two Air Force Ones. The new planes are set to be delivered “mission ready” by 2024, replacing the current Air Force Ones that are now 31 years old, according to a White House statement, Xinhua reported. The White House claimed that it has managed to knock the asking price down $1.4 billion, from the initially proposed $5.3 billion mark. But the credibility of the claim has been put into question by one

The White House (Photo: IANS)

of Trump’s own tweets, sent while he was the president-elect in December 2016.

“Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control,

more than $4 billion. Cancel order!” Trump said in a tweet, suggesting that the original price for the planes were significantly lower than what the White House claimed and the difference between the asking and final prices is less than 1.4 billion. Trump has told US media that the new Air Force Ones will change its traditional livery of white and blue, adopting a combination of red, white, and blue, colors that are more closely associated with the US identity. The new Air Force Ones are believed to be 747 jumbo planes with modifications tailored to the specific security needs of the US President.

Modi govt faces no-trust motion

It is the first no-confidence motion to be faced by any government in the Lok Sabha in 15 years IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he BJP-led NDA government and the Opposition dug in for a showdown in the Lok Sabha after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday admitted a no-confidence motion and said it would be taken up on Friday for discussion and voting. The motion is the first to be faced by the Narendra Modi government, which is left with less than one year in office. It also comes a few months before elections in some key states such as Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where the BJP is in power, and the general election due in April-May next year. Officials said it is the first noconfidence motion to be faced by any government in the Lok Sabha in 15 years, the last being in August 2003 when the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee who faced the motion brought

by the Congress and other parties. Mahajan, who took up the oposition-backed move after the question hour on the first day of the monsoon session, said she was dutybound to put it before the House. She said Kesineni Srinavas of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was the

first to give his no-confidence notice. She asked him to read out the motion, which was supported by over 50 members, including those from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, Aam Aadmi Party and CPI-M.

‘BJP believes in hiding the truth’ IANS, NEW DELHI

C

riticising the proposed amendment to the RTI Bill that will render it “useless”, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the BJP for believing only in keeping the truth hidden. “Every Indian has the right to know the truth. The BJP believes the truth must be hidden from the people and they must not question people in power. The changes proposed to the RTI will make it a useless Act,” Gandhi tweeted.

IMF cuts India’s growth projection UNITED NATIONS: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut India’s growth projections for this fiscal year to 7.3 percent and for the next to 7.5 percent on Monday, although the country will still retain its top spot in the global growth league. But “India’s growth remains quite robust into the future; it is down but growing very strongly”, said Maury Obstfeld, the director of the IMF’s Research Department. The World Economic Outlook (WEO) Update reduced by 0.1 percent the projections made in April for this year and by 0.3 per cent for 2019. —IANS

Congress President Rahul Gandhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s move to pass ‘The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2018’ “must be opposed by every Indian” he added.

The Centre on Wednesday had said it was considering a proposal to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. The proposed amendments to the RTI Act seek to empower the central government to decide the tenure, salary and allowances of information commissioners of the Central Information Commission and also of State Information Commissions through rules. The information commissions are the final authorities to adjudicate on claims of access to information.

Members from some other parties, including Congress, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and Nationalist Congress Party, had also given notice of no-trust motion. Mahajan did not agree with Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge

that she should have “taken together all notices at a time.” The Speaker said the discussion and voting will take place on Friday and that there will be no question hour. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar expressed confidence that the government would win the vote. “Everything will be clear after the discussion. The people have full confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government,” Kumar said in the Lok Sabha. Talking to reporters later, he said the government was ready to give “a befitting reply” to the Opposition. “The NDA is united and would vote against the motion. The opposition will repeat the issues which they have been raising. We are ready to respond to each question,” he said. “The NDA has governments in 21 states. The people have rejected opposition in every election held in the last four years,” Kumar said.

Swami Agnivesh beaten up in Jharkhand IANS, RANCHI

S

ocial activist Swami Agnivesh was on Tuesday assaulted by a group of suspected Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans at Pakur in Jharkhand, following which the state ordered a probe. Chief Minister Raghubar Das ordered the probe into the assault which, informed sources said, will be inquired into by the Commissioner and DIG of Santhal Pargana. Police said a group of persons pounced on the 78-year-old activist as he stepped out of a hotel to get into a car to take part in the 195th Damin Mahotsav at Littpara. Pakur is located around

360 km from state capital Ranchi. “Go back Agnivesh, go back Agnivesh! You have to recite Vande Matram if you have to stay in

India,” his assailants shouted as they rained blows on him. Agnivesh was flanked by tribals who were holding bows and arrows

when the mob attacked him. Even as he kept asking what they wanted, the attackers thrashed him. Agnivesh fell to the ground but the beating continued. His aides did their best to save him. The BJYM workers alleged that Agnivesh had come to instigate the tribals at the behest of Christian missionaries. “I am against any sort of violence. I am known as a peace-loving person. I don’t know why I was attacked,” a visibly shaken Agnivesh told NDTV. “They punched, kicked and dragged me on the ground. They also used cuss words,” he said later. An injured Agnivesh, who was in pain, was later taken to a hospital.

Congress confused over communities? Engaged in what has been called temple hopping, Rahul Gandhi’s new Hindu card may confuse the Muslims AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

E

ver since the A.K. Antony committee identified the Congress’s Muslim “appeasement” tag as a major reason for its electoral reverses, the 133-year-old Grand Old Party (GOP) has been unable to formulate a clear-cut policy on the country’s largest minority community. In a transparent attempt to shed the derogatory label given by its opponents, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has engaged in what has been called “temple hopping” and has even expressed a desire to go on a pilgrimage to Kailash Manasarovar, the ultimate pilgrimage destination in Tibet for Hindus. The chances, however, of these gestures persuading Hindus to turn away in droves from the avowedly pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and support the Congress are minimal. Instead, the latter’s new Hindu card may confuse the Muslims. Rahul’s father, Rajiv Gandhi, also made the mistake of following a muddled policy when he opposed the Supreme Court’s

judgement in favor of a divorced Muslim woman, Shah Bano, at the behest of Muslim fundamentalists and then ordered the opening of the locks of the Babri Masjid to please their Hindu counterparts. However, the fact that religious

overtures do not matter if the nation is seen to be advancing economically was proven in 2009 when the Congress increased its tally of Lok Sabha seats at a time when India was experiencing the fastest-ever reduction of poverty, according to Arvind Subramanian, the former Chief Economic Adviser of the Narendra Modi government. Yet, only five years later, the Congress suffered its worst ever defeat largely because of the “socialistic” policies favored by Sonia Gandhi advocated by the crypto-communist members of her

violence. The BJP’s success in 2014 was the outcome of Modi’s appropriation of the economic reforms which the Manmohan Singh government had neglected in its twilight years when, as former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said, the government made the mistake of taking its foot off the accelerator of reforms. It is patent enough that the BJP would not have fared so well in 2014 if large sections of the Muslims had not voted for it. If they are now feeling uneasy, as Ansari has said, the reasons are not only

Muslim intellectuals, as Rahul Gandhi has done, to find out what their community wants. It is another matter that at the moment, the Muslims want a sense of security, which was pointed out by former Vice President Hamid Ansari. Their angst is understandable at a time when a Union minister garlands a group charged with killing a Muslim. But, in the long run, the most palpable sense of safety is provided by a buoyant economy as it fosters a feeling of wellness which few want to disrupt through targeted

the sporadic acts of violence of the saffron activists, but also that the reforms have not delivered to the extent they were expected to do. As the original initiator of the reforms, the Congress’s focus should be on ways to rev up the economy and not on photo-ops at temples and powwows with Muslim notables. If the party can generate enough confidence about its ability to do what it alleges the Modi government has failed to do, there will be no need for any kind of religious overtures.

Trump tones down Putin praise

The US President condemned ‘haters’ who did not want him getting along with Putin and asserted that his widely panned news conference was appreciated by ‘people at the higher ends of intelligence’

Russian meddling still a threat, White House says

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump, a day after trying to do damage control, offered a fresh defense on Wednesday of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, by saying that his widely panned news conference was appreciated by “many people at the higher ends of intelligence”. In morning tweets, Trump condemned “haters” who did not want him getting along with Putin, saying they suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome”. On Tuesday, the US leader sought to tamp down a global uproar over his warm embrace of Putin at Monday’s summit in Helsinki, delivering a statement at the White House in which he said he accepts the US intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 US election. During his press conference with the Russian leader, Trump had appeared to support him rather than his own intelligence services over claims of election meddling by Moscow. Early Wednesday, Trump was back to touting a meeting that he said would lead to “big results” and “many positive things”, including Russia’s help with his efforts to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons. “So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press

conference performance in Helsinki,” Trump wrote about the joint appearance with Putin that was slammed by members of both political parties. “Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting. We got along well which truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match. Big results will come!” Trump said people “who wanted to see a boxing match” were bothered by his rapport with Putin. “They would rather go to war than see this!” In a subsequent tweet on Wednesday, Trump claimed that a meeting with NATO allies in Brussels last week was an “acknowl-

edged triumph” and that his summit with Putin “may prove to be, in the long run, an even greater success”. Talking about North Korea, Trump said that Russia agreed to help with North Korea. “Big benefits and exciting future for North Korea at end of process!” he said. Republicans were equally dumbfounded as Democrats were over Trump’s siding with Russia over his own intelligence officials after the summit. Trump’s tweets prompted a new round of criticism from Democrats, including Representative Ted Lieu, who said that only Russian people appreciated Trump’s joint

WASHINGTON: The White House said on Wednesday that there is “still” a threat of Russian meddling in the US elections, claiming that president Donald Trump was not referring to that issue when he responded to journalists hours earlier. “We believe that the threat still exists, which is why we are taking steps to prevent it,” spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters at the White House, Efe reported. During a Cabinet meeting in the White House, reporters asked Trump if he believed Russia was still trying to interfere in US elections, after which the president said “no.” Sanders, however, said that the president’s “no” was in response to another question. “The president said, ‘Thank you very much,’ and was saying ‘no’ to answering further questions,” Sanders said.

The spokeswoman said Trump and his administration are “working very hard to make sure that Russia is unable to meddle as they have done in the past.” Asked again whether the president believed that Russian meddling was going on, Sanders said “since there is currently not an election today, not specifically,” adding that “we believe that we are taking steps to make sure they can’t do it again, unlike previous administrations.” In the exchange with the press in the Cabinet room, Trump said that there has “never been a president as tough on Russia” as himself, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin “knows that better than anybody.” US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said earlier that Russia had attempted to interfere in the 2016 elections and that it was carrying out “ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy.” —IANS

Trump told me to sue EU: Sharif family to stay in jail till election British PM Theresa May IANS, ISLAMABAD

LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday said that US President Donald Trump asked her to sue the European Union (EU) rather than negotiate over Brexit. The visiting US President said on Friday at a joint press conference that he had given her a “suggestion” but she had found it too “brutal”. Asked about what the suggestion was during a BBC interview on Sunday, she replied: “He told me I should sue the EU - not go into negotiations.” May also defended her blueprint that was issued on July 12 for Brexit and urged her critics to back it. She said it would allow the UK to strike trade deals with other nations, end free movement of people and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. Before the blueprint was published, Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned, saying it would not

The two exhibited strong chemistry, and May said Trump had agreed to “pursue an ambitious USUK free trade agreement” once Brexit takes effect on March 29, 2019. The decision means that Sharif, until recently the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), will remain in jail along with his daughter and son-in-law during the July 25 general election. The three had filed appeals in the court on Monday, challenging their convictions in the graft case related to their ownership of four luxury flats in the UK. July 25, Dawn online reported. The pleas were against the conviction and seeking the suspension of the Sharif family’s sentences and transfer of the pending two references against them. Three appeals were filed on behalf of the former Premier and two each on behalf of Maryam Nawaz and Safdar. The court issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in all three petitions filed by Sharif. It also said no to suspending the conviction in the case

‘Feminist’ Canada funds women to grow businesses: Minister BHAVANA AKELLA, TORONTO

“feminist” Canada is investing nearly $2 billion Canadian dollars (about Rs 10,000 crores) as seed capital in businesses led by its women entrepreneurs, said a senior woman minister here. “As Canada is committed to encourage women to grow businesses, we have allocated nearly $2 billion in the fiscal 2018-19 budget for investing in businesses run by women entrepreneurs,” Canadian Small Business Minister Bardish Chagger told IANS in an interview.

Bardish Chagger (Photo: IANS)

The Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has also a women’s entrepreneurship strategy in the budget to assist women-led ventures grow and help

their nation prosper. Though born and raised in Canada, Chagger, 38, is of Indian origin, as her parents are Indians, who migrated from Punjab in the 1970s and settled here. The first woman leader of government in the Canadian House of Commons as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Waterloo in Ontario, Chagger also holds the tourism portfolio since 2016. Echoing Trudeau’s viewpoint that Canada cannot tap its potential full if half of its 36-million population was left behind, Chagger said her government was focused on investing in the people, especially refugees

and immigrants who came from the worldover for a better life in this country, bordering the US in the North. “We are a feminist government that practises gender balance to empower all our people and give them equal opportunities to grow,” said Chagger, a keynote speaker at the three-day Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network (DWEN), organized by the American computer maker Dell Technologies. As only 16 per cent of Canadian businesses are owned or run by women, the Trudeau government is working on doubling it to 32 per cent by 2025.

Kumaraswamy breaking down at a public event, saying the party believed that “only members of one family can rule India” and that others should be pushed to weeping publicly. Jaitley’s remark came in a facebook post: “Is the Karnataka a preview of what the Congress and the Federal Front promise for the future?” Jaitley said the country is keenly watching Karnataka where the Congress and the Janata DalSecular joined hands post-elections to form a government in May. “It is a repeat of what the Congress did to Chaudhary Charan Singh, Chandra Shekhar, H.D. Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral. It is the obvious consequence of a non-

NEW DELHI: After the BJP took potshots at Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the JD-S leader denied that he had blamed the Congress or its leaders at a party event on July 14. that he was “not happy” holding the top post and that he was swallowing the pain like Vishakantha (Lord Shiva), who drank poison. Jailtley said non-ideological opportunistic coalitions always get trapped within their own contradictions and their only objective remains survival and not service of the nation. “Their longevity is suspect. If a Prime Minister of such a coalition has to weep before cameras with a wish to exit from office, it will be a scenario worse than the policy paralysis of UPA II. The Congress firmly believes that only members of one family can rule India. If anybody else gets a chance, he should be pushed to the desperation of throwing his hands up and weeping publicly,” he said. Jaitley cited some parts of Kumarswamy’s speech and said that it reminded him of the tragic Hindi films.

England clinches ODI series

England registered a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over India in the third and deciding ODI IANS, LEEDS

Brief scores:

E

ngland put up a strong allround show to thump an underwhelming India by eight wickets in the seriesdeciding third and final One-day International (ODI) at the Headingley cricket ground this week. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid’s triple strikes in the middle overs helped England restrict India for a below par 256/8, despite captain Virat Kohli playing a 71-run knock. Then India’s bowlers could not respond to brilliant batting from Joe Root (100 not out) and Eoin Morgan (88 not out), who shared an 186-run stand for the third wicket as the hosts cantered to a big win, with 5.3 overs to spare. It was England’s second consecutive win as they bounced back strongly after the first ODI loss in Nottingham before they produced a handsome win at the Lord’s. For India, it was the second successive occasion in which their

After conceding 322 runs before being bowled out for 236 in the second ODI, India made as many as three changes, dropping pacers Umesh Yadav, Siddharth Kaul and batsman Lokesh Rahul in favor of pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur and batsman Dinesh Karthik. However, despite these changes, the result

India had a mixed bag of results in their first two matches of the tournament as they beat Ireland 5-0 in their first match, but lost 1-3 to Great Britain in the second match. DUBAI: India skipper Virat Kohli held on to his No.1 spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI player rankings for batsmen, but had a new man just after him with England Test skipper Joe Root vaulting to the No.2 spot at the end of the three-match rubber. Root struck two centuries — 113 not out in the second game and 100 not out in the third, to average 216 in England’s 2-1 triumph and jump four spots to the No.2 spot in the rankings. According to an ICC release, Root’s 818 ratings points, however, isn’t the best in his career. The 819 he had after the Brisbane ODI against Australia earlier this year, when he followed up his 91 not out in Melbourne with 46 not, remains his best. —IANS

BRIEFS:

JAKARTA: Junior shuttlers drew mixed response for India on the opening day of the Asia Junior Badminton Championships this week. In the men’s singles affair, Kiran George, 16th seeded, survived narrowly in the first game before hammering his Malaysian opponent Chong King Lingin in the second game to register a 24-22, 21-16 victory. However, in another men’s singles match, Aman Farogh Sanjay went down against tenth seed Indonesian, Karono Karono 1621, 21-16, 17-21 after putting up a good fight.

did not change. Put in to bat, India rode on captain Kohli’s 71, combined with his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s laborious 66-ball 42 and a valuable 44 from opener Shikhar Dhawan even as Rashid applied the brakes to return figures of 3/49 off his 10 overs. India were in trouble early on, losing in-form opener Rohit Sharma

for a sluggish 18-ball 2, before Dhawan and Kohli forged a 71-run second wicket stand to inject life back into the innings. With the right-left duo of Kohli and Dhawan going all guns blazing, all-rounder Ben Stokes brought the hosts back into the game with the run-out of Dhawan, who by then had faced 49 balls and struck seven fours. The southpaw’s dismissal brought in Dinesh Karthik for his first game of the tour. Karthik started off well with a boundary before picking two more on his way to a quickfire 22-ball 21 but an inside edge off a tossed up delivery from Rashid ended his stay and also the 41-run third wicket stand.

tar shooter Jitu Rai has been dropped from the latest list of sportspersons being supported by the much touted Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Apart from Rai, fellow shooters Yashaswini Deswal, Amanpreet Singh and Neeraj Kumar have also been dropped from the scheme. The Sports Authourity of India (SAI) cited poor form as the reason for the exclusion.

“Proposals of TOPS shooters of about Rs 50 lakhs who will be representing India at Asian Games and World Championships were approved at the meeting. A thorough performance review of shooters under TOPS was also undertaken and four shooters including Jitu Rai were dropped from the scheme, on grounds of recent below-par performances and nonselection in Asian Games and World Championship squads,” the SAI said in a statement.

Jitu had enjoyed good performances earlier this year which include gold in the men’s 10m air pistol category at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia last April. However, subsequent poor form saw him being dropped from the Indian squad for next month’s Asian Games. The SAI also informed that skeet shooters Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Sheeraz Sheikh will be provided a sports psychologist and physiotherapist for a brief period.

Somehow after battling the traffic for an hour or so, I managed to reach Kandhulimari, one of the five Assamese villages on the eastern edge of the mighty Brahmaputra where Hima was born to rice

Hima’s old Assam-type house at No. 3, Kandhulimari village, was thronged by hundreds of locals even as the 18 members of the joint family were still to come to terms with the historic feat of the teenager the previous night — marred by a power cut which prevented them from savoring her moment of glory. “Hima called up her mother at around 9 p.m. on July 12 night and said that her event would start in a couple of hours, we all were eager to watch it on television but then there was a four-hour power failure,” her aunt, Puspalata told IANS. “We woke up to the news that she won the gold and couldn’t stop our tears, as the village erupted in joy.” she added.

Kylian Mbappe (65th) made it 4-1 before Mandzukic pounced on a blunder from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to reduce the difference to two in the 69th minute, giving some hope to Croatia. Novel drug therapy may potentially help treat ALS NEW YORK: Administering a therapy using DNA-based compounds could extend survival and reverse signs of neuromuscular damage in animals of inherited amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), finds a study. ALS is a progressive fatal disease that kills the nerve cells that controls walking, eating and breathing, about one fifth of which are caused due to

mutations in a gene called SOD1. These mutations cause the SOD1 protein to be overly active, which suggests that reducing protein levels might help ALS patients, the researchers said. The findings showed that the drug could increase the lifespan by 22 percent as the subjects who received the therapy lived 37 days longer than

those given the placebo. “This drug had an impressive effect in mice and rats with just one or two doses,” said Timothy Miller, professor of neurology at the Washington University. “We don’t know yet if this works in people, but we’re very hopeful. For the study, published in Journal of Clinical Investigation, the team tested two DNA-based compounds — known as antisense oligonucleotides or oligos — in mice and rats. The animals were genetically modified to carry a mutated form of the human SOD1 gene. The mice were given an anti-SOD1 oligo or a placebo at day 50, and a second dose about six weeks later. Those who received the drug maintained their weight 26 days longer. The rats that received the drug fared much better than the ones that received the placebo and survived eight to nine weeks longer.

Millennial women at higher risk of prenatal depression LONDON: Owing to the increased pressures of social media and the pace of modern life, younger expecting mothers may be at more than 50 per cent higher risk of developing prenatal depression, than their mothers, according to a study. “The research shows that depression in today’s young women may be driven by rises in feeling overwhelmed and stressed rather than feelings of being down and flat,” Rebecca Pearson from Bristol University was quoted as saying to Daily Mail. The impact of chronic stress, sleep deprivation, eating habits may be amplified during pregnancy. Present generation of young women have also experienced rapid change in technology, internet, and social media use, which has been

The analysis showed that 17 percent of women from first generation suffered from prenatal depression which rose to 25 percent for the younger mothers. — IANS

WASHINGTON: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, this week, the first drug with an indication for treatment of smallpox. Smallpox, a contagious and sometimes fatal infectious disease, was declared eradicated in 1980, by the World Health Organization. TPOXX (tecovirimat) is a smallmolecule antiviral treatment for smallpox, the first therapy specifically approved for this indication. “To address the risk of bioterrorism, Congress has taken steps to enable approval of countermeasures to thwart pathogens. This new treatment affords us an additional option should smallpox ever be used as a bioweapon,” Scott Gottlieb, FDA Commissioner, said in a statement.

cientists have found that multiple sclerosis (MS) may be identified at least five years earlier as the patients were more likely to undergo treatments for nervous system disorders like pain or sleep problems, according to a study. MS results from the body’s immune system attacking myelin — fatty material that enables rapid transmission of electrical signals — which disrupts the communication between the brain and other parts of the body, leading to vision problems, muscle weakness, difficulty with balance, and cognitive impairments. “The existence of such ‘warning signs’ are well-accepted for Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, but there has been little investigation into a similar pattern for MS,” said lead researcher,

people with multiple sclerosis and compared them to the health records of 67,000 people without the disease. Fibromyalgia — a condition involving widespread musculoskeletal pain — was found more than three times in people who were later diagnosed with MS as compared to those who did not.

We’ve completed the first phase of safety testing, and now we’re working on

finding the right dose,” Miller added.

Judge carries gun in court, reassigned

Judge Joseph Claps dropped a handgun inside the lobby of a courthouse (Cook County Sheriff’s Office)

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Pursuant to action taken on July 11, the Executive Committee of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Associate Judge Joseph Michael Claps has been reassigned to administrative duties. The assignment is effective until further notice. The Executive Committee’s decision to reassign Judge Claps followed a meeting of the Circuit Court of Cook County Executive Committee convened by Chief Judge Timothy Evans. The committee is aware that the Cook County Sheriff filed a misdemeanor charge against Judge Claps, alleging that he carried a concealed weapon, a loaded gun, into a prohibited area. On July 5, Chief Judge Evans reassigned Judge Claps to administrative duties pending the Executive

C

Committee’s review of the matter on July 11. A judge may be temporarily reassigned to restricted or other than judicial duties whenever there are charges or implications of improper conduct, depending on the severity and nature, under “Illinois Supreme Court Rule 56. Temporary Assignment to Other Duties.” In the Circuit Court of Cook County, administrative duties can include performing legal research, conducting marriage ceremonies and reviewing petitions for reduced court-filing fees for indigent parties. Claps is expected to appear in court on July 19 at the branch courthouse in suburban Maywood. Claps, 70, has been a judge for more than two decades, the last 15 years with the Criminal Division. He previously worked as the top assistant to the state attorney general and as a Cook County prosecutor.

BY A STAFF WRITER IAMI, FL -- An Indian American teenager, Nisha Sejwal, was among four people killed in Florida on July 17 when two small planes collided. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a news release that Sejwal, 19 of New Delhi; Jorge Sanchez, 22; Ralph Knight, 72; and Carlos Alfredo Zanetti Scarpati, 22, died in the mishap involving two planes belonging to the Dean International Flight School. Sejwal began attending the flight school in September 2017. She had also attended Amity International School and DAV Model School in Yusuf Sarai in Delhi. The planes—a Piper PA-34 and a Cessna 172—crashed in a remote region accessible only by air, boat or helicopter. Democrat Saira Rao gets death threats

Saira Rao

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A former congressional candidate in Colorado has claimed she received death threats after she retweeted a provocative New York Times opinion piece titled, “Should I Give Up on White People?” written by Emory University philosophy professor George Yancy. Indian American Democrat Saira Rao, who lost her bid for Colorado’s Congressional District 1 House seat on June 26, told local media on July 10 she and her family were leaving Denver because she feared for their safety. Rao and her husband Shiv live in Denver with their two children. “It feels really, really hateful right now. Everyone knows what my kids look like. I just can’t take that risk,” Rao told reporters. Rao retweeted Yancy’s op-ed on July 5, answering the author’s headline question with the response: “Short and long answer: YES.” And that’s when a flurry of activity began. Rao received 364 responses to her tweet, some of which accused her of being a racist herself. Many wrote of Rao’s “sour grapes” response to her failed congressional bid. According to Rao, the tweet gained traction after state Rep. Paul Rosenthal, who is white, retweeted her message and said he disagreed with her. She said the reaction to her tweet is essentially proving her point about the need to “dismantle white supremacy,” which she said is “a task white people must undertake.

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- NASA on July 10 announced its 2018 class of flight directors, which includes Indian American Pooja Jesrani, who will lead mission control for a variety of new operations at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The six-person class, in addition to Jesrani, includes Marcos Flores, Allison Bolinger, Adi Boulos, Rebecca Wingfield and Paul Konyha. Jesrani was born in England but immigrated to Houston during childhood. She began interning with United Space Alliance before graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering in 2007. In her work with the alliance and

later NASA, Jesrani has supported the space station flight control team in many positions, including managing the life support and motion control systems, and then as a capsule communicator, speaking directly with the astronauts in space. Recently, she has been working to integrate mission operations for upcoming commercial crew flights. The new flight directors will begin extensive training on flight control and vehicle systems, as well as operational leadership and risk management, before they are ready to sit behind the flight director console in mission control supporting NASA’s astronauts, NASA said in a news release. When they do, they will become part of a group that numbers fewer than 100.

This class will bring the total number of flight directors the agency has had to 97 since Christopher Kraft became the first flight director in 1958, according to NASA. Joining the 26 active flight directors currently guiding mission control, this group will have the opportunity to oversee a variety of human spaceflight missions involving the International Space Station, including integrating American-made commercial crew spacecraft into the fleet of vehicles servicing the orbiting laboratory, as well as Orion spacecraft missions to the Moon and beyond. As flight directors, they will head teams of flight controllers, research and engineering experts, and support personnel around the world and make the real-time decisions critical to keeping NASA astronauts safe in space.

ICE agents arrest 37 in New Jersey BY A STAFF WRITER IDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 37 people who were in the United States illegally during a fiveday law enforcement operation in Middlesex County. ICE says that the raid “targeted criminal aliens who were previously incarcerated at the Middlesex County Jail, and who were subsequently released to the community… without honoring the ICE detainer or advising ICE of their release.” The agency says that of the 37 people arrested, 16 had previously been released by the jail without notifying ICE. About 78 per cent of those arrested had prior criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. Ruben Perez, acting field office director of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in ICE’s Newark office, criticized Middlesex County leaders for being a socalled “sanctuary county.” “ERO New Jersey will continue to enforce ICE’s commitment to public safety,” Perez said in a statement. “Middlesex County, which aspires to be a ‘sanctuary county’ by protecting criminal aliens, in the process assists criminals in undermining federal law, and creates a dangerous environment

$10k fellowship for Indian student

Amninder Singh

BY A STAFF WRITER OUNTAIN VALLEY, CA -- Indian American graduate student at U.C. Riverside (UCR) Amninder Singh was named a Fellow at the National Water Research Institute and Southern California Salinity Coalition. The fellowship supports research in biological, chemical, engineering, health, political, and physical sciences, as well as planning and public policy, the university said in a news release. Singh, a first-year doctoral student, was chosen from more than 100 applicants. The fellowship provides $10,000 a year for up to two years to support graduate student research addressing the need to remove or reduce salts from water supplies and preserve water resources in Southern California. Singh’s research focuses on using smart irrigation technologies to optimize recycled water application for turfgrass irrigation, with the goal of conserving water, maintaining turf quality, and sustaining soil health. There is currently a lack of research on the use of smart irrigation controllers in dry weather climates, such as Southern California. The competition selects talented students from universities in Southern California in a region stretching from Santa Barbara to San Diego and extending to the border of Arizona and Nevada.

The 87-year-old victim told the police he was notified by an unknown suspect he had won the prize, and that he had to wire $3,000 to an account number provided to him for fees and taxes on the prize money.
