Obama’s formal invitation was conveyed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns who met Modi on July 11and delivered a letter from the US president. In the letter, Obama reiterated his invitation to Modi to visit Washington in September and to work closely with him to make India-U.S. relations a “defining partnership” for the 21st century. According to a statement from

the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi thanked Obama for the invitation and said he “looked forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcomes that imparts new momentum and energy to IndiaU.S. strategic partnership”. Burns conveyed Obama’s desire to boost economic ties with India, including in next-generation technologies and manufacturing sector, cooperate in enhancing energy security and deepen security cooperation, including in maritime security, counter-terrorism and intelligence exchange. Bobby Jindal still mulling for 2016 White House run WASHINGTON: Louisiana’s IndianAmerican Governor Bobby Jindal will not make a decision about a White House run in 2016 until after November as he tries to make his Republican Party “stop being the stupid party. “We’ve said it’s something we’re thinking about, praying about. It’s something we’re considering. But we won’t make a decision until certainly after November,” he told Time Magazine in an interview. Jindal, 43, who had warned the Republican Party against remaining the “stupid party” after Mitt Romney’s rout in 2012, thinks “we’ve made progress, but there is more work to be done. “Second, I think it’s important we continue to be specific about our policy proposals,” he said Jindal also cautioned his party against just running against Obamacare, President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law that has gained over eight million enrolees proving critics wrong.

Modi recalled Obama’s telephone call soon after India’s general elections and expressed his appreciation for “the detailed and thoughtful letter”. move to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a joint session of U.S. Congress is gaining momentum with 36 lawmakers endorsing it in a letter to the Congressional leadership. Brad Sherman, a senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and an active member of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, is spearheading the effort along with Republican Ted Poe and Democrat Eni Faleomavaega. Modi, who has been invited by President Barack Obama to visit Washington, is expected to meet him at the White House on September 30 after addressing the UN General Assembly session in New York. An invitation to address a Joint Session of Congress is viewed as the highest honour the Congress can bestow on a foreign head of state, said Sherman.

Noting that in each of the last three decades, a Prime Minister of India has addressed a joint session of Congress, the lawmakers said Modi’s upcoming visit “will allow us to continue that tradition.” Modi’s three predecessors Rajiv Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh have all been accorded this honor.

“I am pleased that many more members have joined the effort to invite Prime Minister Modi to a Joint Session of Congress,” Sherman said. “The United States and India have a special relationship based on shared democratic values. This is an excellent opportunity to build on this partnership.”

acing opposition heat, a cornered government on July 15 denounced yoga guru Ramdev aide Ved Pratap Vaidik’s meeting with Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed and sought a report from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The government’s disapproval of the meeting with a man wanted in India came as an unrelenting opposition took on the Narendra Modi government in both Houses of Parliament, leading to repeated disruptions. Viji Murali named CIO of US varsity WASHINGTON: An Osmania University, Hyderabad, graduate Viji Murali, has been named Chief Information Officer and vice provost of Information and Educational Technology at the University of California, Davis. Murali, an IT veteran in higher education, is coming to Davis from Washington State University, where she has served as vice president for Information Services Viji Murali and CIO for the WSU system since 2007. “UC Davis is incredibly fortunate to recruit someone with Viji’s experience and expertise,” Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said in announcing Murali’s appointment. “She is a leader in her field, and her efforts will be essential in realizing our Vision of Excellence.” She succeeds Pete Siegel, who left UC Davis a year ago. Professor Prasant Mohapatra has served as interim vice provost and CIO in the meantime. Murali is set to start her new job on Aug 18. “I am excited to be joining a university with such a wonderful reputation, to lead the IT enterprise that contributes to the university’s excellence, in everything from student success to research. “I intend to develop a shared vision with the faculty, staff and students, and we will move the institution to even greater heights,” she said. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from the Women’s College at Osmania University, India (1975).

One of the projects that will be taken up this year in India will be dealing with trauma, mainly brain damage, in road accidents, she said.

“We want more of a digital AAPI — newsletters, Twitter, Facebook. With AAPI getting more into social networking, academics also want to get involved with it,” she said. “It should not be a regional ethnic type of organization. It should be coming up towards the mainstream. That’s my goal,” she said. Her second goal is to make sure that academicians come. “We want to have medical scientific seminars and lifetime achievements to be recognized to attract

academicians.” “When AAPI was first formed (in 1982) it was based on immigrant physicians trained in India facing a lot of challenges of discrimination in hospitals. As we have evolved with our kids in medical colleges, we have infiltrated the American system of medicine.” “Our goal and mission are slowly changing from discrimination to becoming part of mainstream organized medicine so that it’s not only better for our kids, but for Indians and for the community as a whole,” Samadder said.

NEW YORK: An Indian-origin man, who was extradited to the U.S. from India to face trial, was sentenced to life for killing his wife and two children in 2008. Is Modi sidestepping RSS? Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide Amit Shah’s elevation to the post of BJP President shows that RSS had little or no say in his appointment AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

hen L.K. Advani was dragged kicking and screaming from the post of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president in 2005 under orders from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a diplomatic cable from the US embassy in Delhi to Washington stated that the event “demonstrated the power of the RSS — and will likely increase the party’s (the BJP’s) political decline”. According to Wikileaks, the cable also noted that Advani was “shocked” by the failure of the “second tier” of the BJP leadership comprising, among others Murli Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj, to come to his aid. While leaving the president’s post, Advani called for changing the “impression that has gained ground that no political or organizational decision can be taken (by the BJP) without the consent of the RSS functionaries”. Nearly a decade later, Narendra Modi can be said to have changed the impression by making the party choose its own man, Amit Shah, for the president’s post without the concurrence of the RSS. After choosing Rajnath Singh to replace Advani, they asked Nitin Gadkari to take Rajnath Singh’s

Even the journey of gradual ascent leading to this mesmerizing retreat, through the meandering roads dotted with rubber and Arecuna trees, apart from pepper and beetle leaf creepers, is a treat. Now, it is clear that the RSS had little or no say in Shah’s appointment. The result was that the RSS openly called for their removal as in 2005 when the then RSS chief, K.S. Sudarshan, said that both Vajpayee and Advani should make way for “new leaders”. BRICS 2014: Modi calls for urgent reforms

The Indian prime minister urges for reforming UN Security Council and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Brazil IANS, FORTALEZA (BRAZIL)/ NEW DELHI

I

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 15 called for “urgent reform” of institutions such as the UN Security Council and International Monetary Fund (IMF) while stressing the international community should have zero tolerance towards terrorism. In his statement in the BRICS summit on the agenda “Political Coordination: International Governance and Regional Crises”, Modi noted it was taking place at a time when the world was facing a high level of turmoil and uncertainty and “remaining mute spectators” to countries in peril could have “grave consequences”. Modi, who addressed his first international meeting as prime minister, said collective pressure should be exerted on states to deny sanctuaries and support to terrorists even as he noted that terrorism had not been combated effectively due to “different yardsticks”. Prime Minister Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin. FORTALEZA: India is keen to further deepen and broad-base its strategic partnership with Russia, including in defense, nuclear energy, trade and investment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin in Brazil. Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Fortaleza on July 15, expressed appreciation for Russia’s friendship and unstinting bilateral and international support for India’s economic development and security since the early days of India’s Independence, a press statement said. Modi reaffirmed that relations with Russia will continue to enjoy the priority that they always had in India’s foreign policy.

I

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 15 met Chinese President Xi Jinping and called for a solution to the “boundary question” as the two countries sought to expand their economic relations and rectify the trade imbalance. In his first meeting with Xi since becoming prime minister, Modi called for enhanced Chinese investment in India’s infrastructure as the two leaders engaged in a freewheeling discussion and focused on building personal rapport in the discussion that went beyond the scheduled time. China invited Modi to the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in November, the first time India has been invited for the meet. The meeting took place within hours of Modi and Xi arriving at Fortaleza in Brazil for the BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and

must unite to decisively confront challenges, he said. “Corrective action must begin with the reform of institutions of global governance. This has been on the BRICS agenda since its inception. Institutions like the UN Security Council and IMF need urgent reform. They must become more representative and reflect ground realities,” he said. Modi noted the region stretching from Afghanistan to Africa was experiencing turbulence and conflict, and causing grave instability that is fast seeping across borders. “This impacts us all. Remaining mute spectators to countries being torn up in this manner can have grave consequences,” he said. Noting Afghanistan was facing an uncertain future and its people have suffered for decades, Modi said the world must unite to help them build a peaceful, stable, democratic and prosperous country. “We must help Afghanistan fight the forces of terrorism. This is important for it to preserve the progress it has made in the last decade,” he said.

SHORT TAKES ‘BRICS bank to benefit developing countries’ FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on July 15 expressed confidence that the expected creation of a BRICS development bank and a reserve fund would benefit developing countries. Rousseff made the remarks when she left her hotel in this Brazilian city for the opening ceremony of the sixth summit of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

BRICS statistical publication launched FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on July 15 launched the latest edition of a statistical report for the emerging market bloc of the BRICS group. The Joint Statistical Publication 2014 was released on the sidelines of the sixth summit of the BRICS group, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Xinhua reported.

‘BRICS summit to change course of 21st century’ FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said the decisions taken at the BRICS summit will change the course of the 21st century, media reported on July 15. “The BRICS have made very important decisions to change the political and economic world order,” Xinhua quoted Maduro as saying.

Non-implementation of IMF reforms irks BRICS FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): The world’s leading emerging economies on July 15 expressed their disappointment with the failure to implement the 2010 International Monetary Fund (IMF) reforms. “We remain disappointed and seriously concerned with the current non-implementation of” the IMF reforms, said a joint declaration of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South

Africa, collectively known as BRICS. The failure impacts the global lender’s legitimacy, credibility and effectiveness, added the Fortaleza Declaration, released here following the sixth BRICS summit. “The fund must remain a quota-based institution,” the BRICS countries said, while calling on the membership of the IMF to carry out the overdue reforms without delay.

Students condemn Israel’s attack on Palestinians HYDERABAD: A massive protest was held here on July 13 to condemn Israel’s offensive against Palestinians. Hundreds of activists of the Students Islamic Organization (SIO) took out a rally and formed a human chain, demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s attacks. The protestors raised slogans of “Down with Israel”. They were also carrying placards with pictures of children and other victims of Israeli bombardment. “Let Gaza live”, “You don’t need to be a Muslim to stand up with Gaza”, “Murdering an 11-month-old is not selfdefense” were some of the slogans written on the placards. The speakers urged the Indian government to cut

down diplomatic ties with Israel and restore its traditional stand of backing Palestinians. The SIO leaders also urged the central government to press Israel to immediately stop the air strikes. “At a time when Prime Minister

Narendra Modi is visiting Brazil to attend BRICS summit, India should raise the issue in the international arena and put pressure on Israel to stop atrocities, said Laeeq Ahmed, president, SIO’s Hyderabad unit. The SIO also urged the Telangana government not to have any ties with Israel in agriculture sector. It said Israel was responsible for destroying crops of Palestine by the use of its lethal weapons and such state cannot be trusted upon for the improvement of agriculture in other parts of the world. — IANS

CSIR scientists accused of data fabrication BANGALORE: It is rarely that work of Indian scientists grab worldwide attention. But last week, a group of scientists from a research institute in Chandigarh entered the international spotlight —

although for wrong reasons. Between January and May 2013, the group from the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) had published three research papers in PLOS ONE, a reputed science journal having its headquarters in San Francisco. In what has come as an embarrassment to the Indian science community, the journal announced on July 9 that it was retracting all the three papers of the IMTECH group “as the published results were fabricated”.

Swaranjit Singh, senior principal scientist at IMTECH and key author of all the discredited papers, did not reply to email request for his comments on the wholesale retraction of his group’s all three papers — a record of some sort. IMTECH is a flagship institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) globally known for the development of India’s first patented biopharmaceutical drug to dissolve blood clots. Group’s director Girish Sahni said an internal investigation showed the data falsification was the handiwork of a junior author who has since resigned. — IANS

House passes bill to transfer Telangana land to Andhra NEW DELHI: Parliament on July 14 passed a bill to transfer parts of Telanaga’s Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh in connection with the construction of the Polavaram irrigation project with the Rajya Sabha giving its assent to the measure. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 11, will transfer 136 villages, 211 hamlets and seven mandals of Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh, where they will become part of the East Godavari district. Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured the members of the upper house that all precautions will be taken to protect the interests of tribals who will be affected due to the Polavaram project. “Socio-economic impact of the project has been taken into consideration. Andhra Pradesh government has assured Chhattisgarh and Odisha that there will be a protective embankment for as many villages as possible,” he said. — IANS

Germany on top of the world

22-year-old Gotze’s late goal hands Germany their fourth World Cup crown; Messi gets Golden Ball IANS, RIO DE JANEIRO

ermany became the first European team to win the FIFA World Cup on South American soil, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final thanks to Mario Gotze’s extra time goal at the Maracana Stadium here on July 14. The last time the Germans, playing as West Germany, lifted the World Cup trophy was in 1990 beating Diego Maradona-led Argentina with the same scoreline in Rome. The two teams were locked goalless after 105 minutes of play and took two German substitutes to

break the deadlock and give Germany their fourth World Cup triumph. Andre Schurrle made inroads down the left hand side, and lofted in a neat cross towards the near post. Gotze took it excellently on his chest and with time and space to move, he brilliantly found the back of the net in the 113rd minute. Germany and Argentina could not be separated after 90 minutes of play. For the third time in a row the FIFA World Cup final went into extra time after the two teams were locked 0-0 at full-time. Italy defeated France in penalties, while in 2010 Andres Iniesta scored with the clock running down to clinch the trophy for Spain against the Netherlands. RIO DE JANEIRO: Luiz Felipe Scolari has tendered his resignation as coach of Brazil following the team’s ignominious FIFA World Cup exit — and it has been accepted. The 65-year-old made the decision following a meeting with Jose Maria Marin, the president of Brazil’s football confederation (CBF), reports Xinhua. His backroom staff, including assistant manager Carlos Alberto Parreira also stepped down. “Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and his fellow coaching staff have left their positions,” the CBF said in a statement. “Scolari and his entire coaching staff deserve our gratitude. Mahela bids farewell to Test cricket IANS, GALLE (SRI LANKA)

F

ormer Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene on July 14 announced his retirement from Test cricket after the end of the Test series against South Africa and Pakistan in August. He will continue playing ODI cricket. The veteran has played 145 Tests and has hit 33 hundreds and 48 fifties in 244 innings, scoring 11,493 Test runs in his career. Jayawardene, in a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief executive officer Ashley De Silva, stated that he would like to retire from

Test cricket after the forthcoming Test series against South Africa and Pakistan. “It was not an easy decision to make given that it has been a great privilege and honor representing my country during the past 18 years, but I believe this is the right time,” said Jayawardene.

two teams could not find the breakthrough with Argentina having the better chances of the two. The first half nearly ended in all kinds of dread for Argentina. A Benedikt Howedes header at the death that left a dent in the post was just shy of hitting the target. In the 23rd minute when German midfielder Toni Kroos made an incredibly poor header backwards, intended for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The second half was a much tighter affair with both teams slowing down the pace of the game. Extra time started at break neck speed with Andre Schurrle testing Romero early on. There

were signs of fatigue all over the pitch though. Argentina midfielder Angel di Maria failed to return to the starting lineup. The Real Madrid midfielder sustained a thigh injury in Argentina’s quarterfinal win over Belgium and missed the semifinal against the Netherlands. There had been talk that Angel di Maria, who scored the late winner in the round-of-16 victory against Switzerland, may be risked for the final by coach Alejandro Sabella, but Sabella finally decided to keep faith in the team that saw off the Oranje with Enzo Perez keeping his place.

ICC charges James Anderson of misconduct IANS, NOTTINGHAM

E

ngland fast bowler James Anderson has been charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for violation of the Code of Conduct by allegedly abusing and pushing India’s Ravindra Jadeja during the first cricket Test at Trent Bridge. Anderson could miss the final two Tests of the series if found guilty of the Level 3 offense, which is seen as serious and range from physical altercations to use of offensive language. In retaliation, a “shocked” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has accused Jadeja of a lesser offense as they do not want both players — especially Anderson — to be forced to miss the final two Tests. The ECB has decided to contest the misconduct allegations against Anderson and in turn seek sanction against Jadeja. A statement from the ECB read: “The England and Wales Cricket Board has today reacted with surprise that the India team has made allegations against James Anderson under Level 3 of

the ICC Code of Conduct for a minor incident involving Ravindra Jadeja during the first Investec Test match at Trent Bridge. “In the light of this, the ECB has notified the ICC of its intention to lodge code of conduct breaches against Jadeja.” Anderson, who was involved in world record last-wicket partnership with Joe Root in the drawn Test, was involved in some verbal altercations with Jadeja as the batsman and his captain MS Dhoni walked off for lunch. Rousing welcome by Indians awaits Modi in NY

N 28.

By hi INDiA TEAM

EW YORK -- A grand reception awaits Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the 64-year-old former Gujarat Chief Minister arrives in New York on September

In what was the first meeting of its kind, about 250 members of the Indian-American community from all walks of life gathered at the TV Asia auditorium on July 12 to discuss a plan of action to accord a warm welcome to Modi. The meeting was not organized by any particular organization but by a group of well-wishers who called themselves ‘volunteers’ with guidance being offered by Dr Bharat Barai, a community leader and philanthropist who is also an Indiana-based oncologist of repute. Dyaneshwar Mulay, Consul-General (CG) in New York, said that the reception would be a community

event with no government patronage, adding that his office would play only a supporting role. He advised everyone to work unitedly to make the welcome function a grand success. It is learnt that besides a reception committee, various other all-inclusive panels will be formed to chalk out a grandiose plan for a memorable welcome to the popular leader who led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The panels will comprise community leaders from all states of the US and people from various prominent Indian and ethnic organizations who are believed to have been searching for a venue that can accommodate at least 100,000 people. The 60,000-capacity Yankee Stadium in New York and the 80,000-seat Giants Stadium in New Jersey are already booked for the last week of September for other programs. However, though the meeting at the TV Asia

auditorium ended on a quiet note, everything was not hunky-dory during the lively proceedings with some of the members raising a hue and cry over little or no representation to New York and New Jersey in the panels. Others also expressed the apprehension that Dr Barai, former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, would ‘hijack the event’ and ‘take credit’ for the success of the Modi reception. However, CG Mulay soon joined the discussion and pacified all groups, asking everyone to bury the hatchet and appealed to them to stand shoulder to shoulder to see that the rare occasion passed off without any controversy. (In an email to Hi India, Dr Barai gives his version of the meeting. See report alongside) Modi, who was sworn in as the Prime Minister on May 26, is arriving in the US in September-end to attend the annual General Assembly session in New York and a White House meeting with US President Barack Obama.

Barai douses fire as Indians Brazil key global partner differ over PM reception of India: Modi

A

bout 250 members of the Indian-American community representing various Indian-American associations in New York and New Jersey area had gathered on July 12 at the TV Asia Auditorium in New York (see report on this page) to discuss plans for according a rousing reception to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits New

York in September. Some of those who attended the first-of-its-kind deliberations are believed to have created a ruckus at the meeting in organizing which Dr Bharat Barai, a prominent oncologist from Indiana and a former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, played a key role. Dr Barai, in an email to Hi India, sets the record straight to end the needles controversy. The following is his version of what transpired at the meeting: “We had arranged a meeting, inviting 2 representatives of each Indian American associations in NY-NJ area on July 12, 2014 at the TV Asia Auditorium. The meeting was attended by about 260 people. Some uninvited elements also attended. “At the beginning, it appeared that a small group of 9 people tried to question the meeting and the ‘Authority’ of the people holding the meeting. Mr Ankur Vaidya, president of a group called FIA spoke. He was explained the process and a document from the embassy for the Madison Square Garden was read. “The rest of the 250 people were not happy at such distraction and tried to shout him out. We handled the situation coolly and calmly in a professional manner. We invited Mr Vaidya to come to the podium and give his views briefly. Rest of the people booed and shouted at him down. I requested the guests to respect his right to give his views. “He spoke calmly, gave some points and then he and 8 others left the auditorium calmly. Several speakers spoke and

stressed the importance of working in a united fashion to present the best show in support of PM Modi, India and the Indian American Community. We all emphasized that we were all working as volunteers for this cause. The attendees were very supportive. “Then Mr Shalli Kumar from Chicago (who was not invited) came and stated that he had met the Consul General of New York 2 days ago and the CG had called him, advising that this meeting should be adjourned and the CG had told him that he will appoint a new committee for this event. “That threw every one in confusion. He further stated that there was no need for fund-raising and he will give $1 million. Several members protested that one man was trying to buy out the program. Some members shouted at him that in the past, he had made many such donation promises, but never donated a penny. “Some members present, texted to CG about the use of his name and “attempt by CG to impose his committee”, as announced by Shalli Kumar. CG called me and clarified that he had not stated any such thing. He confirmed that by sending the text message to that effect. He personally came there and clarified the situation appropriately. His role was very constructive. “Mr Shalli Kumar’s role in using name of many dignitaries of India and Republican officials is well known and referenced on Google. The members present were requested to put their names for the committees that they would like to serve. The meeting ended on a very good note and work will proceed as planned. “I must emphasize that out of 260 association representatives, only 9 (7 of them uninvited) tried to create distraction and falsify-dramatize in name of the CG of NY. The rest of the people were very decent and supportive. “We have already filed application with Madison Square Garden and hope to sign the contract ASAP. The rest of the work is proceeding as usual.” Bharat Barai MD

The bruised soul in ‘Haider’: Shahid NEW DELHI: The much-awaited trailer of Vishal Bardwaj’s latest rendition of Shakespeare (Hamlet), Haider is out. This is Bhardwaj’s third Bollywood version of a Shakespeare play after Omkara and Maqbool had screenplays adapted from Othello and Macbeth. Haider features veteran actors Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Kay Kay Menon, along with the lead pair Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. Shahid Kapoor, who plays the lead role, is intense, evil and passionate — everything you need for a Shakespearean tragedy. While there’s little

about Shraddha in the trailer, Tabu marks her presence even in the few small appearances she makes. Kay Kay Menon is impressive as the evil uncle. Two scenes in the trailer especially stand out: first a face-off between Shahid and Tabu, and the other a scene between Shahid and Shraddha. In the face-off scene, Shahid tells Tabu “Maa jab jhooth bole naa, nahi acchi lagti”. The pain and angst in Shahid’s expression are heartwrenching and Tabu too has pulled off the expression of loss very dramatically.

Ajay reprises his role of Bajirao Singham. ”Every year we celebrate Independence Day for the nation and Singham Returns is our tribute to the country,” said the actor. ”If both common man and men in uniform would be like Singham, then the Independence Day celebrations will become more meaningful,” he added.

hank god for Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The soul shivers in fear wondering which disaster zone this bland avatar of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge would have headed to if these two actors hadn’t steered the rudderless revisionist saga to semblance of sensitivity. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania takes the Raj and Simran characters, shakes and stirs them and turns them on their head. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, two of Bollywood’s most talented contemporary actors, don’t really try to fill

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s shoes. They have better things to do. He, Humpty (yes, that’s what our hero is called) can’t keep it in his pants...his money, that is! He spends it buying a lehenga for the wedding of the girl of his dreams. And the girl Kavya uses the money

to buy him a car of his dreams. When we first meet Humpty, he emerges from a loo behind a sheepish-looking girl. In her introduction scene, Kavya (Alia) is shown trying to bully her father into buying her a Manish Malhotra lehenga for her wedding to the ‘perfect’

NRI. The ‘perfect’ NRI is played by television actor Siddharth Shukla, so exceptionally wooden, that he seems to be carved out of a tree. No one in HSKD seems to feel any real emotions. Clearly, the debutant director is here doing a revisionist version of DDLJ, much in the same way that Sanjay Leela Bhansali did with Romeo and Juliet in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.. The creator of the revisionist version of the ‘classic’ lacks the vision to take the original characters to another level from where they originally stood. At mid-point when the girl jumps in bed with the stranger who buys her the lehenga from her dreams, you know once and for all that this pair is beyond repair. Simran would have never done that.

We develop our personality and knowledge due to their teachings and guidance. So, they were honored by washing their feet with utmost devotion and offered them with tilak, pushpa, phal, uttariya. New light on protein as anti-bacterial agent BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) — Researchers led by Dr. Ravi Ranjan, an Indian American research scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine here, have discovered how a protein molecule in immune cells promotes the production of nitric oxide, a potent weapon in the cells’ arsenal to defend the body from bacterial attack. The protein may offer a target for reining in the inflammatory response, which must be able to fight infection without damaging tissue. The study was published in the Journal of Innate Immunity. NFATc3 is one of several related protein molecules known to play a role in regulating genes in the T and B cells of the immune system. Ranjan, who is first author on the paper, said he and his collaborators wanted to know if NFATc3 also had any function in macrophages – specialized killer cells that hunt down, engulf and destroy

Dr Ravi Ranjan

marauding bacteria. Macrophages kill using chemicals, including nitric oxide, that they synthesize in response to infection. Macrophages are also important in reducing the

inflammation in sepsis, an out-of-control reaction to infection that can cause organ failure and death. When the researchers exposed macrophages to chemicals that signal a bacterial infection, they found that NFATc3 increasingly bound to genes that boost the production of nitric oxide synthase — the enzyme that makes nitric oxide. “Without the ability to synthesize inducible nitric oxide synthase, a macrophage would be missing a key element of its chemical weaponry,” Ranjan said in a press release. To test this hypothesis, the researchers then induced sepsis in mice that lacked the ability to make NFATc3. As expected, lung tissue from these mice had a much higher bacterial load than the lung tissue of septic mice that could produce NFATc3. “Our study demonstrates that NFATc3 is required for macrophages to effectively fight infection, because without it, they can’t make their primary bactericidal agent — nitric oxide,” Ranjan said.

CVS Pharmacy halts sales of cold drugs in W Virginia

EST VIRGINIA -CVS Pharmacy said they had halted sales of some cold medicines in West Virginia as part of the efforts to fight abuse of methamphetamine in that state. The company says they will no longer sell “single-ingredient pseudo ephedrine,” which is often sold and available under the brand name Sudafed. Competing national pharmacy chains Rite-Aid and Walgreen’s have also stopped sales of the products there. According to state officials, law enforcement seized a record 530 meth labs in West Virginia last year. So far this year, another 207 labs have been seized there. “We took this step as part of our longstanding commitment to assuring that PSE products are purchased at our stores only for legitimate medical purposes,” said a CVS spokesman. In addition to stopping sales of the product in its West Virginia stores, the company said it would end sales of pseudo ephedrine at stores located within 15 miles of the state boarder in the neighboring states of Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It’s Argentina vs Germany,

Devastated Brazilian fans in mourning the world over Germany and Argentina to revive memories of World Cup finals of late 80s and 90s as they face each other once again IANS, SAO PAULO

fter a goalless 120minute of play, Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-2 in a penalty shootout, thanks to impressive saves from keeper Sergio Romero, in the FIFA World Cup semi-final here on July 10. Argentina will face Germany in the final in Rio on July 13. The Germans thrashed hosts Brazil 71 in the other semifinal on July 9, leaving the Brazilian fans in tears worldwide. In the second semi-final, the 27-year-old Romero denied two penalty kicks from Dutch defender Ron Vlaar and playmaker Wesley Sneijder in the first and third round while his teammates converted all the four kicks to claim the victory after both teams were tied 0-0 at the end of extra time, reports Xinhua.

Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal did not repeat the successful goalkeeper substitution strategy in the quarterfinal penalty shootout win against Costa Rica, which saw reserve keeper Tim Krul come into the pitch in the last minute of extra time and block two kicks in the following penalty duel. Both sides played cautiously as Netherlands’ Arjen Robben and Argentina talisman Lionel Messi were both strangled with tight defense. After the break, the Dutch boss made the first substitution of the match, bringing in Daryl Janmaat to replace Indi. The change witnessed a bit of a reshuffle in the Dutch defending line as their starting left back Blind, who was under tremendous pressure in the first half, moved inside to replace Indi and veteran right back Dirk Kuyt

went to the left to make place for Janmaat. In the 75th minute, Argentina broke defense in the right flank and Perez slipped in a through pass to meet a dashing Gonzalo Higuain. In the last minute of the regular time, Robben burst into the area from middle but his close range left-foot effort was blocked by Javier Mascherano. Both team remained patient in extra time with Argentina’s substitute Rodrigo Palacio and Maxi Rodriguez each wasting a chance to score a winner. Palacio’s header inside the box was just too tame to threat a wellpositioned Cillessen in the 115th minute while two minutes later Messi chipped a ball to the far post but Rodriguez’s volley scuffed into the ground and was easily caught by the keeper.

Vijay slams ton in first Test NOTTINGHAM: Opening batsman Murali Vijay got his maiden overseas Test century to guide India to a competitive 259 for four on the first day of the first Test against England at Trent Bridge here on July 9. Vijay was unbeaten on 122 and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 50 as India pulled back things in their favor in

the third session of the game. Opting to bat first, India made a good start scoring 106 runs in the first session. But England struck back in the second by picking two quick wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara (38) and Virat Kohli (1) to leave India at 107 for three. In the third and the final session, India lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane, who had worked hard for his 32, but Vijay and Dhoni took the visitors to a position of strength with their unfinished 81-run stand for the fifth wicket. It wasn’t the classiest of the knocks from Vijay but nonetheless valuable and came at the right time for India, who are keen on putting behind the 0-4 whitewash they suffered on their last tour in 2011. — IANS

7.2 feet tall Bhullar to be part of NBA WASHINGTON: Sim Bhullar has become the first player of Indian-origin ever to be part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bhullar, 21, a center from New Mexico State University, has signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings, a professional basketball team, The American Bazar reported. Bhullar, 7.2-foot tall, has parents hailing from Punjab. Although he may not end up playing for the Kings when the 2014-2015 season begins, he will be on the roster, and that marks an historic first for Indian-American athletes. He proved adept at playing in the paint, averaging 7.8 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, and 10.4 points per game in his two-year career in the New Mexico state. Those numbers may not jump off the page, but they are solid and point towards significant potential in the big leagues. “Guys

my size don’t have very long careers and you have to take advantage of it and do the best you can with the time you have to play,” Bhullar was quoted as saying in an interview with The Globe and Mail. “I didn’t want to get hurt in another college season and ruin my chances. And I’m not the kind of guy that’s doing it just to make money right away, I just want to play at the highest level,” he said.

SMSes can help young adults reduce binge drinking You may tend to eat more than usual when your stressed, uncomfortable or dealing with mood swings IANS, New Delhi

I

f you cannot resist the sweets kept in your refrigerator and crave for food even after a sumptuous meal, you could be a victim of overeating, warn health experts. Stress, long hours of starvation and the wide variety of food options available in the market contribute to overeating, they say. Listing the various reasons that lead to overeating, dietitian Akshita Aggarwal told IANS: “Usually, when people feel emotional, stressed, are under any trauma or have any discomfort, they tend to eat a lot.” She added that sometimes people overeat when there is a long gap between two meals. “Some people eat more to feel better and overcome trauma,” Aggarwal added. “Apart from overeating, stress can also cause under-eating. Under eating leads to hair fall, calcium deficiency, less immunity, lack of glow on the face and anemia,” Choudhary added. However, Pawan Sethi, nutritionist at Dr. Rachna’s Diet in Mansarovar Garden, said that the percentage of people who eat when stressed is lower. “Rather, people these days earn well and have more affordable food options to select from. Also, the number of outings have increased where they end up eating more junk which leads to their being overweight,” added Sethi. Experts add that skipping or having a late breakfast is also a reason for being overweight. “These days, people leave for work early and by the time they have their food, it gets late. Since

The main effect of overeating in stress is overweight, which can further lead to various medical complications.

WASHINGTON: Young adults in the US who screened positive for a history of hazardous or binge drinking halved their binge drinking after receiving mobile phone text messages following a visit to the emergency department. “The hospitals provide a unique setting to screen young adults for drinking problems and to engage with them via their preferred mode of communication to reduce future use,” said Brian Suffoletto from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine. During the study, researchers enrolled 765 young adult emergency patients with a history of hazardous drinking. For 12 weeks, one-third received text messages prompting them to respond to drinking-related queries and received text messages in return for offering feedback on their answers.

they have not eaten a proper meal, they are extremely hungry and end up eating anything which comes in front of them,” Choudhary told IANS. Aggarwal said that the few symptoms associated with overeating include “eating more rapidly than normal, depression or mood swings, abnormal eating patterns, history of weight fluctuations, unsuccessful diets and obesity”. “The main effect of overeating in stress is overweight, which can further lead to various medical complications,” concurred Choudhary. “Apart from weight gain, hormonal imbalance usually seen in females gives rise to irregular menstruation, facial growth, hair fall and PCOS,” Aggarwal told IANS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder

which affects women of reproductive age. Those affected suffer from numerous cysts located along the outer edge of each ovary. “It is very important for women with PCOS to keep a tab on their weight as the condition leads to further medical complications,” added Choudhary. She added that though there is no particular age for a person to suffer from the condition, it can even start from a very young age. “The condition is usually seen in youngsters as they eat more junk food, but even elders suffer from the same problem,” said Sethi. Adding, ‘If compulsive overeating, is not treated it can lead to diseases like obesity, diabetics, heart disease, hypertension, depression, kidney disease and high cholesterol.’

The group receiving text messages decreased their self-reported binge drinking days by 51 percent and decreased the number of self-reported drinks per day by 31 percent. “We need to intervene in a meaningful way in the health and habits of people when they are young,” Suffoletto added. — IANS

n a significant discovery, researchers have invented a cheap and hand-held device to diagnose type-1 diabetes at home. People who are at risk of developing type-1 diabetes can also benefit from the nanotech microchip-based device because it will allow doctors to quickly track if they can have the disease later in life. “With the new test, not only do we anticipate being

able to diagnose diabetes more efficiently and more broadly, we will also understand diabetes better,” said Brian Feldman, at Stanford University. The handheld microchips distinguish between the two main forms of diabetes mellitus — type-1 and type-2 — which are both characterized by high blood-sugar levels but have different causes and treatments. The test was validated with blood samples from people newly diagnosed with diabetes and from people without diabetes. Both groups had the old test and the microchip-based test performed on their blood. The new microchip uses no radioactivity, produces results in minutes and requires minimal training to use.

Your week ahead... Aries You like obstacles. Obstacles give you something to work around. They give you something to do. When all the barriers before you suddenly lift, you and your comrades march toward victory in a shower of confetti. Weekend is all yours.

Taurus You wake up feeling like a character in a romance novel. Your entire life seems oriented toward the prospect of love. Flattery and sex appeal figure strongly. The weekend recoil you to the realm of red roses and box of chocolates.

Gemini You have more strength than you realize, and you’re a lot farther ahead than you think. If a spreadsheet has you cross-eyed don’t panic. The tide is finally going your way, if only some cash would float by. Weekend is purely love.

Cancer You are overwhelmed and irritable, but you don’t have to let anyone else know that. It’s all about how you come across. Be alert and communicate clearly. Emotions are running high at the end of the week. You are indefatigable.

Leo You are a success. You are almost a legend among your coworkers. When someone asks casually about your life goals, don’t be shy. Modesty and pride are major themes. Weekend is one of those top-of-the-mountain days.

Virgo It’s healthy to have the jitters before traveling. An open, philosophical approach — rather than a strictly practical approach — is the way to go during the first half of this week. Weekend seems good to socialize around others.

(July 21-27) Libra A diplomatic tete-a-tete may be necessary to smooth things over between you and an important ally. Find something to laugh about. Find a way to appreciate beauty and harmony while getting things done.

Scorpio The push and pull isn’t a fight per se, it’s just several people trying to establish interpersonal edge. Take a stand, a compromise here or there will make things easier, you can handle that. Money issues requires attention.

Sagittarius Don’t be so concerned with how you’re going to harvest apples from a tree you haven’t planted yet. Get the tree planted and worry about how to make apple pie after you’re ringed by bucket of apples. Weekend is lucky.

Capricorn Spending some time in nature would be a swell idea. Indulge in several hours of doing nothing at all. Friends are talking your ear off. Energy levels surge by the weekend. All the havoc in the rest of your world seeps into your home life.

Aquarius A sizzling affair: strawberries, whipped cream — pure bliss. Your emotionality is not in charge; you’re in charge. Organize your feelings and get plenty of sleep. Weekend is an energized day.

Pisces Try your hand at being creative, but don’t be too specific about what you do. Clarity of thought isn’t as important as fullness of feeling. Friday is a romantic day and the mystery of this other person in your life is endlessly thrilling.

Soon, control ‘Google Glass’ with your thoughts

Curiosity Rover finds meteorites on Mars F Discovers its first meteorites on the red planet, named as ‘Lebanon’ and ‘Lebanon B’

n a significant finding, NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has discovered its first meteorites on the red planet, which scientists have named ‘Lebanon’ and its smaller companion ‘Lebanon B’. The Mars meteorites were found May 25 and NASA released a detailed photo of the Lebanon meteorites on July 15. Curiosity took detailed pictures of the main Lebanon meteorite using its high-resolution Chem-Cam and Remote MicroImager cameras. The images revealed strange angular cavities in the surface of the rock. “That ‘Lebanon’ is huge, almost 7 feet,” NASA spokesman Guy Webster from the agency’s

ocus hard and you will be able to control Google Glass with your thoughts alone. Yes, your power of thoughts can give the computer eyewear commands to do certain things, like taking a picture and even posting it to Facebook. Developed by London-based start-up “This Place”, the open source “MindRDR” app combines wearable tech with another headset with sensor. It analyses the user’s brainwaves and gauge the user’s level of focus. Concentrate hard until a horizontal white line starts to rise on Google Glass “screen”. When the level crosses a certain threshold, MindRDR tells Google Glass to take a picture.

Stay focus and Glass will post the photo on social media. “It’s pretty cool when you have taken a picture and shared it, just by thinking,” said Chloe Kirton, creative director of This Place. The technology could also be used to help those with severe physical lack such as locked-in syndrome or severe multiple sclerosis. The new app is yet to be approved.

App to save precious data The Mars meteorites were found May 25 and NASA released a detailed photo of the Lebanon meteorites on July 15. Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California was quoted by Space.com as saying. Webster said Curiosity also found a third meteorite at the same time it spotted the Lebanon rocks. In a raw photo from Curiosity, the third meteorite which is also about 7 feet wide can be seen just beyond the closer Lebanon meteorites. “Heavy Metal! I found an iron meteorite on Mars,” Curiosity’s handlers wrote on the mission’s Twitter page. The three meteorites are the first space rocks on Mars discovered by the Curiosity

rover since it landed on the Red Planet in August 2012, Webster added. “One possible explanation is that they resulted from preferential erosion along crystalline boundaries within the metal of the rock,” NASA officials wrote in a statement. “Another possibility is that these cavities once contained olivine crystals, which can be found in a rare type of stony-iron meteorites called pallasites, thought to have been formed near the core-mantle boundary within an asteroid.”

H

ere comes an app that can help you save your precious smart phone data even if it is lost or destroyed. The app called “PicAway”, uploads all content from a smart phone to “the Cloud” — internetbased storage that is accessible by multiple devices, immediately without saving it on the actual device itself. The new feature replaces camera interface with a working browser. It gives an impression as if the user is surfing the net while

he/she can upload pictures directly to the Cloud if stuck in tricky situations. “We want to empower users with the ability to take photos and videos without the fear of those photos and videos being deleted, removed and/or lost,” app co-developer Pedram Afshar from Australian firm ‘5.5 Degrees’ was quoted as saying. By uploading the photos directly to the cloud, the app ensures that there are no missed opportunities as there is no question of “No Storage” message being popped up, reports added.

Porn addiction affects brain like drug addiction: Study IANS, LONDON

P

orn addiction triggers same brain activity in people as if they are on drugs, significant research reveals. People with compulsive sexual behaviors — an obsession with sexual thoughts, feelings or behaviors which they are unable to control — behave in the same way as patients with drug addictions, according to researchers from the University of Cambridge in Britain. “The patients in our trial were people who had substantial difficulties controlling their sexual behaviors and this was having significant consequences for them, affecting their lives and relationships,” explained Valerie Voon at the Uni-

versity of Cambridge. During the study funded by the Wellcome Trust, 19 participants were shown a series of short videos featuring either sexually explicit
