ifted with a resonating magical voice that captivated the refined listeners of Hindustani classical music for generations, Girija Devi played a key part in popularizing and raising the profile of Thumri, that gave her the appellation ‘Thumri Queen. Born on May 8, 1929, in Varanasi, to a zamindar, Ramdeo Rai, Girija Devi began taking music lessons when she was a child of five. Her first guru was vocalist and sarangi player Sarju Prasad Misra, and then Sri Chand Misra. Girija Devi always loved to recount her childhood days in Varanasi, where “I considered myself more as a boy, than a girl”. Rao encouraged her to learn swimming, horse riding and stick fighting, which she loved, but never had much interest in studies. “At the same time, I did play with dolls, and spent time arranging for my doll’s marriage,” Girija Devi said during an interview few years back. At that tender age, she learnt Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, Tarana, Indian folk music and Bhajan. With Varanasi being a hub of both Hindu and Muslim classical singers, the elements from both

Recognizing her talent, the AIR authorities treated the 20-year-old at par with established singers Sehnai maestro Bismillah Khan, Hindustani singer Siddheswari Devi and table exponent Kanthe Maharaj.

“During that time there was no system of audition or grading of artists. But I found from the contract forms that I was paid the same amount of money as these artists.” Two years later, Girija Devi gave her first public performance at a music conference in Bihar’s Arrah, alongside the likes of Pundit Omkarnath Thakur and Kanthe Maharaj. In 1952, she paid her first visit

to Kolkata — which became her home two and a half decades later — to take part in the Sadarang Sangeet Sammelan. Corker said Trump has “great difficulty with the truth” and that “debasing” the US would be his prime legacy as President, adding that Trump has “proven himself unable to rise to the occasion.” “I think many of us, have tried to, you know, intervene, and I have had a private dinner and have been with him on multiple occasions to try and create some kind of aspirational approach, if you will, to the way that he conducts himself,” Corker said. “I don’t think that that’s possible. According to the latest figures issued by the UN office in Bangladesh, over 600,000 refugees have entered the country since August 25 after the Myan-

Khin Zaw Win, Director of the Yangon-based Tampadipa Institute that works on policy advocacy and capacity-building in Myanmar, too is of the view that India should play a role. “The first thing New Delhi can do is to convene a tripartite meeting of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar,” Win said over phone from Yangon while pointing out that India and Myanmar enjoyed good ties. “China is trying to mediate, but I would rather prefer India to handle the matter. Remember there is no Rohingya in China, but they are there in India.”

There are around 40,000 Rohingya refugees in India, but the government has sent a clear message that it was not willing to accept them because of security concerns. The Supreme Court on October 13 asked the Centre to strike a balance between national security, economic interests and humanitarian considerations with regard to Rohingya women, children, old, sick and infirm, and listed the next hearing of the matter for November 21. Earlier this month, in an interaction with the media here,

Though the film is two and half hours long, the length never sits uneasily on the narrative. Some passages in the screenplay are sheer ingenuity masquerading as

masala fare. The post-intermission episode where Mahesh Babu playing a government surveillance agent, takes the help of televisionaddicted housewives to nab the terrorist, is a work of sheer genius. And the way the hero saves his mother and kid-brother from the sadistic villain has to be seen to be believed. Innovative writing in Indian cinema is hard to come by. One that synthesizes thrills with a certain sobriety so effectively is rare. Murugadoss’ writing is always ahead of his (considerable) skills as a director. A dedicated food industry enthusiast, Kharel runs his business with a lot of passion and hopes to touch lives by feeding people great grub. His real life-story is no less eventful than a Bollywood movie. Restaurateur, Ramakant Kharel, met the girl of his dreams in his hometown of Kathmandu, Nepal. The two got married secretly as the families were opposed to the match. In a quest to give his love a better life, Kharel made the tough decision of leaving his wife back home to come to Chicago, USA. After realizing that his wife’s parents, unaware of their couple status were looking to get her married off, the two revealed their marriage and his wife joined him. The young couple struggled together and made Chicago their new home. After years’ of hard work and many jobs later, Ramakant Kharel rose to become one of the first successful entrepreneurs from Nepal in Chicago.

Today the couple lives happily in Glenview with their two children and is thankful for all the blessings life has brought along. Ramakant Kharel who is exceptionally busy these days managing the operations of his newly opened restaurant Red Hot Chili Pepper, chats with Hi India on everything from his struggles to his success story and the invaluable business advice his wife gave him years ago.

LIFE IN A FLASH BACK Ramakant Kharel who originally belongs to Nepal spent some of his early years in Delhi, India. Almost a global citizen by heart, Kharel admits that as a child when he was growing up in Delhi he always thought that India was his home and country. It was only after he grew up and his dad shifted back to their hometown in Nepal he realized that Nepal is his country too. Kharel laughs, “Today the same is with Chicago. The moment I came here I felt at home. I feel equally connected to India, Nepal and Chicago.” Ramakant Kharel’s life is an inspiring

journey that many immigrants who come to America go through. Detailing his life in his own words, Kharel says, “I came to Chicago back in 1991 as a student. Even though I came under extraordinary circumstances where I had secretly married my love and left her back home, I was determined to make my life a success over here.” Kharel recalls, “I enrolled myself in a college here but due to my financial crisis I could not complete my education. But being a drop out did not break my spirit and I was hopeful that with honesty and hard work I will succeed in life.” He says, “I had completed my Masters in English back home in Nepal when I came here so I had no language barriers. But there were other struggles, as I had no friends, family or guidance on how to shape my life. After my wife joined me in Chicago we undertook this journey together. During this time I worked in many restaurants as a waiter. I always had two jobs, if I used to work in one place during the day, I would work at another during the night. I worked extremely hard during those initial years

and while most of the time I worked as a waiter in many eateries I also dabbled in a few other jobs. I was a bellman at Intercontinental also and even though that job paid well, I had the desire to do something more. I had seen many people who worked, as bellmen would even retire in that job, as it would give them enough money. But my dreams were bigger for my family and myself. During those early years I also worked in customer service and I was also a salesperson. But the job of salesman was didn’t suit me as one had to lie a lot and I wasn’t comfortable with doing anything that was unethical to earn a living. I remember during this phase when I was wondering on what profession should I pursue, my wife gave me a valuable advice. She said that I should do something in food industry as all these years she had observed that I was the happiest when I was working in food business. I would say that advice changed my life.” Kharel listened to his wife and decided to invest his hard earned money in a restaurant of his own. He says, “By 2000 I had saved enough to open my restaurant.

We all were carefully involved to ensure that the money is put to maximum benefit and it is heartening that a lot of rebuilding and restoration work was carried out.”

BRIDGING NEPAL AND CHICAGO Kharel believes that he felt an instant connection to Chicago and the city too has been kind to him. On being one of the first from Nepali community to settle in Chicago, he says, “When I came here there were only about 15 Nepali families. This was 26 years ago, today that number has grown to around 10,000 people settled everywhere around the city and suburbs.”

THE NEW VENTURE About his new Indo-Chinese eatery, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Kharel says it is also a labor of love like his first restaurant. On why he chose Indian Chine fusion cuisine, he says, “I grew up in Delhi where Indo-Chinese fusion is very popular. When we came to Chicago we always missed that food and flavor. The Chinese that we get in America is bland and not the fusion we ate back home. And it’s not just me but a lot of people who grew up in India that have a certain nostalgia attached to that kind of food.” Through his new restaurant, Kharel hopes to serve people that familiarity of comfort food they grew up eating. The passion behind his work is showing results, as his place, which is just a few weeks old, is already attracting a steady stream of customers. Kharel says, “Those who come to dine here are returning back for more meals and that is the biggest compliment for any restaurateur.”

FITNESS FREAK Though Kharel is by his own admission a dedicated worker he is also a disciplinarian when it comes to his fitness routine. He believes just by working for your livelihood you are not doing enough for your body. He says, “One needs to push oneself out of their comfort zone and that is when the body starts reacting to exercise.” On many people who ask for his fitness advice, he says, “I always tell people to start slow. If I were to tell them to exercise for one hour on the first day itself they probably would need to be in bed for seven days. I would say one should start with as little as three minutes and keep on increasing it till you reach your goal of about half an hour an hour per day.” On a personal front, Kharel is happy at the way life has shaped up for him. He says, “My wife has been my support all these years and has inculcated wonderful values in my two children. She is a Krishna devotee and goes to ISCKON. I hope to continue doing good work and inspire many other people.

BY A STAFF WRITER ALLEJO, CA -- The president of an East Bay transportation company that provides rides for disabled people has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for filing fraudulent business tax returns to conceal more than $4.6 million that he used as spending money. Federal prosecutors said Dublin resident Shiv Kumar, 60, who founded A-Paratransit Inc. in 1996, filed the fraudulent returns with the IRS for tax years 2009 and 2010. The $4.6 million in embezzled money caused a tax loss of more than $1.5 million to the IRS. In a plea agreement, Kumar admitted that he misled his accountant by depositing the company’s receipts into three separate bank accounts, while providing his accountant with bank records from only one of the bank accounts. He also acknowledged providing his accountant with false books and records that omitted gross receipts diverted to undisclosed bank accounts. Kumar used the unreported funds for personal expenditures, including purchasing a property in Vallejo. In addition to the prison term, Judge Jon Tigar ordered Kumar to serve one year of supervised release. The judge will determine the amount of restitution Kumar must pay at a subsequent hearing.

BY A STAFF WRITER ONG ISL AND, NY -- The Nassau County Police Department arrested an Indian-American couple in Albertson, Long Island on October 4 for allegedly operating a drugproducing operation in the basement of their establishment. Sunita Shah, 57, and Rajesh Shah, 62, were taken into custody for the alleged illegal activity. The Narcotics Vice Squad detectives, along with Third Precinct Police and the Williston Park Fire Department responded to smell-of-gas alert in the vicinity of 122 Hillside Avenue on October 4 afternoon. Upon arrival, they found a strong odor emanating from the basement of Simply Foot Spa. Soon, the Shahs arrived and opened the business door. The police saw several cans of chemicals along with drug paraphernalia. The building was evacuated and till it was deemed safe. The police said there was an undetermined amount of synthetic marijuana on the premises. They recovered more than 20 pounds of loose synthetic marijuana, and 5,300 bags containing synthetic marijuana. The estimated recovered street value of the marijuana is a quarter of a million dollars Both defendants Sunita Shah and Rajesh Shah were placed into police custody.

Draksharam, as well as other appointee Darrick McGill, will serve on the commission through November 19, 2021. The commission regulates the conduct of the state judiciary, including the power to recommend for retirement, censure, suspension or removal of a judge from office. Draksharam, of Sugar Land, is the president of Sirrus Engineers Inc., which he started some 15 years ago in 2002. Earlier, the licensed professional engineer with a civil engineering focus since 1998 has served as a consultant at various local Texas firms. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Association of State Floodplain Managers. Draksharam also volunteers with various community groups, among them Harris County Street Olympics and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., and Jamie Raskin, D-Md.on October 5 introduced legislation to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate and report on hate crimes. Specifically, the commission would be charged with determining if there had been a rise in hate crimes, the causes of that increase, and how to combat it, Krishnamoorthi’s office said in a news release. The 12-person panel would have one year to prepare its report and its members would be appointed by the House and Senate leadership of both parties with equal representation from the civil rights and law enforcement communities.

BY A STAFF WRITER AN MATEO, CA- The British founder of a Northern California startup tech company was arrested and charged with assaulting and sexually abusing a toddler. Zain Jaffer, the founder of mobile advertising company Vungle, was also charged with battery of a police officer and emergency personnel. San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Jaffer, possibly of South Asian origin, was charged with two counts of child abuse, against his son and daughter, as well as oral copulation of a person under 14, lewd act upon a child and assault likely to produce great bodily injury. An initial charge of attempted murder was dropped after the district attorney determined there was not enough evidence to support it. The 29-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges on October 17 in San Mateo County. Jaffer remained in San Mateo County Jail on October 20 on $300,000 bail. San Francisco-based Vungle removed Jaffer as its chief executive on October 19 and placed him on indefinite leave. Rick Tallman, who replaced him as CEO, said Vungle “removed him as rapidly as possible,”media reports said. “The actions of one individual are in no way reflective of the almost 200 dedicated and hardworking people who work for Vungle,” Tallman said. “Everyone at the company is appalled and deeply saddened by these events.” Jaffer, who has degrees from King’s College London, London Business School and University College London, was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2012, founded Vungle in London in 2011 and moved its operations to San Francisco shortly thereafter.

11-yr-old Indian girl top young scientist BY A STAFF WRITER ONE TREE, CO -- 3M and Discovery Education have named an 11-year-old Indian American girl, Gitanjali Rao, as the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge winner. Rao, a seventh-grader at STEM School and Academy, was chosen from among 10 finalists who included five Indian American kids in capturing the $25,000 top prize and title of America’s Top Young Scientist at the 10th annual event. The remaining nine finalists received $1,000 and a variety of prizes from Discovery Education and 3M. The tween is working to develop Tethys, a sensor-based device that can detect lead in water faster than other current techniques. Rather than using expensive equipment for testing, Rao’s cost-effective approach to water safety uses a mobile app that populates the water’s status almost immediately, according to a 3M and Discovery Education joint news release. Indian couple held after drug haul BY A STAFF WRITER ONG ISLAND, NY -- The Nassau County Police Department arrested an Indian-American couple in Albertson, Long Island on October 4 for allegedly operating a drug-producing operation in the basement of their establishment. The Narcotics Vice Squad detectives, along with Third Precinct Police and the Williston Park Fire Department responded to smell-ofgas alert in the vicinity of 122 Hillside Avenue on October 4 afternoon. BY A STAFF WRITER ORK COUNTY, PA -- A suspect in York County, Pennsylvania, remains at large days after an October 18 fatal shooting of Indian American convenience store clerk Aditya Anand. Anand was shot in the left arm and chest at the beginning of his shift around 5:45 am on October 18 at an Exxon gas station store in York. The clerk was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at 6:10 am. Community members remembered the 44-year-old Anand positively. The police said that the shooting and robbery were “unusual”. The shooter, described by police as a black man in his 30s with a large build and a beard, remains at large. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, an olive coat, jeans and white sneakers.

Joseph Villani and his girlfriend Raquel Garajau are currently facing trial for 13 counts of first degree felony murder, robbery, and possession of an unlawful weapon, among other charges. Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Stephanie Dugan noted in court last week that the couple had been dealing in cocaine, marijuana, and Ecstasy for months before Patel’s dead body was found in Shark River Park on February 22. The 29-year-old man had been missing since February 9. Nine months before Patel’s murder, he was arrested for possessing large amounts of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. BY A STAFF WRITER HOENIX, AZ -- An Indian American man who pleaded guilty in an August 2016 cyber-attack on Phoenix-area 911 emergency systems must serve three years of probation. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says authorities will be able to monitor Meet Desai’s computer while he serves the probation term imposed on October 10 by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge. Four Phoenix-area law enforcement agencies reported receiving hundreds of hang-up emergency calls during the attack, which Desai told authorities was a prank gone awry. Desai was arrested in October 2016 after multiple agencies, including Surprise and Peoria police and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office, reported an influx of emergency call hang-ups between October 24 and October 26 last year. According to a sheriff ’s office statement, more than 100 hang-up 911 calls were recorded within a few minutes late on October 25. Investigators traced the calls and discovered they originated from a link posted to Twitter, according to the sheriff’s statement. The link was to a site named ‘Meet Desai’ and its domain was hosted out of San Francisco. When the link was clicked, it continually called 911 and would not let the caller hang up. The volume of calls had the potential to shut down 911 service across Maricopa County. Attorney General’s spokeswoman Mia Garcia says Desai cooperated with authorities, expressed remorse and had never been in trouble before.

MUMBAI: Designers Djey Tanwar and Megha Sikchi will showcase their new collection ‘Paradise Ocean’, inspired by nature, and Delhi-based designer Bani Khurana will launch her ‘Dainty Romance’ line at a forthcoming fashion event. Tanwar and Sikchi’s new red carpet collection under their label “The O.F.U” is in black, ice grey blue, gold, red, turquoise, read a statement. The designers have used mesh, sequins, stones and beads to showcase the elements from the sea like the corals and the reefs. They have added frills, spangles and tassles to the cocktail gowns, dramatic skirts with sculpted bodices, crop tops and shrugs. “Nature has always inspired us. It has a myriad of colors and elements. This time we decided to take different elements from the sky and the ocean and capture it in our new collection,” Sikchi said. “The collection is very comfortable and wearable and we are confident everyone is going to love it,” Tanwar added. Take heart, it may not be as bad as you think, but a sign that you are really smart and creative, researchers say. The findings showed people with efficient brains may have too much brain capacity to stop their minds from wandering when performing easy tasks. “People tend to think of mind wandering as something that is bad. You try to pay attention and you can’t. Our data are consistent with the idea that this isn’t always true. Some people have more efficient brains,” said Eric Schumacher, Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, US. Higher efficiency means more capacity to think, and the brain may mind wander when performing easy tasks, he said. For the study, published in the journal Neuropsychologia, the team measured the brain patterns of people while they lay in an MRI machine. The researchers then used the data to identify which areas of the brain work together

Individuals who reported more frequent daydreaming scored higher on intellectual and creative ability and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine, the researchers said.
