‘America First’: Trump
“It’s time to shake the rust off America’s foreign policy,” says Republican front-runner after sweeping five state primaries and inching closer to clinch the nomination which America can have constructive relations with the Muslim world. “We’re going to be working very closely with our friends in the Muslim world, which are all at risk for violent attacks,” he said. A
fter a clean sweep in five state primaries, Republican front-runner Donald Trump outlined an “America First” foreign policy during a speech here. “It’s time to shake the rust off America’s foreign policy,” he said during his speech at the Mayflower Hotel this week. “My foreign policy always puts the interest of the American people and American security above all else. Has to be first. Has to be. That will be the foundation of every single decision that I will make.” “’America first’ will be the major and overriding theme of my administration,” the Time magazine quoted the business mogul as saying. Trump first used the phrase “America first”-which is associated with 1930s-era isolationism-in an interview with the New York

Hillary has 3 percent lead over Trump: Poll WASHINGTON: In a head-to-head match-up, Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has a three percent advantage nationally over her Republican rival Donald Trump, according to a new poll. The latest George Washington University Battleground (GW Battleground) poll puts her ahead at 46 to 43, with 11 percent of the voters undecided. Interestingly, though, Senator Bernie Sanders, who has mounted a spirited but now seemingly futile challenge against Clinton, fares much better against Trump nationally, with an 11 percent advantage at 51 to 40, with the rest undecided. The bipartisan poll, conducted in partnership with The Tarrance Group and Lake Research Partners, found that among “likely voters” an overwhelming 89 percent have been following the nomination process of the two parties closely - and that they have “negative views of almost all major candidates”. The poll found that of the five candidates still in the race for the highest office, only two - Vermont Senator Sanders and Ohio governor John Kasich - have an unfavorable rating below 50 percent, at 44 and 29, respectively. The three others - former Secretary of State Clinton (56 percent),

hold talks with Russia to seek common ground, possibly over Islamist extremism. “Some say the Russians can’t be reasonable,” he said. “I intend to find out.” China, he said, “respects strength, and by letting them take advantage of us economically like they are doing, we are losing all
their respect”. He said he would seek to “fix our relations with China” but did not suggest how. The foreign policy speech is the second major speech in which he has sought to establish his bona fides for the Republican Establishment, analysts said. In March, he gave a speech a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in which he mostly stuck to the script. Trump won the Republican primaries in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island on Tuesday, putting him closer to clinching the nomination. The wins decreased the odds for a contested convention this summer in Cleveland, a scenario his rivals had banked on to stop him from securing the Republican nomination. “This to me was our biggest night,” Trump said in his victory speech. “I consider myself the presumptive nominee.”
Zuckerberg, Pichai to ‘raise foundation for Ramanujan’ SUBHASH K. JHA, WASHINGTON
G Surprisingly, Senator Bernie Sanders fared better against Trump nationally, with 11 percent advantage. (Photo: IANS)
Texas Senator Ted Cruz (55 percent) and businessman Trump (65 percent) - are all mostly disliked, with a majority of voters saying they would not consider voting for them for president. Interestingly, the poll found that former president Bill Clinton, who has been campaigning for his wife, has a higher favorability rating than four of the five contenders: with 54 percent favorable and 41 percent unfavorable. “There is bad news aplenty here for both parties. Voters are disheartened about the future and disdainful of the leading candidates in both parties,” Christopher Arterton from GW Graduate School of Political Management was quoted as saying.
oogle CEO Sundar Pichai and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, among others, have reportedly pledged to form a foundation in the name of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Russian billionaire and founder Yuri Milner held a screening of director Matthew Brown’s “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, a biopic on Ramanujam, over the weekend at the Silicon Valley, which was attended by the Who’s Who of US super-elite, according to a source close to the film’s unit. “Sundar Pichai (CEO, Google), Sergey Brin (founder, Google), Mark Zuckerberg (founder, Facebook), Brendan Iribe (CEO of Oculus VR), and some other fifty other ‘1 percenters’ of Silicon Valley were at Yuri Milner’s house in Los Altos. Yuri hosted a very private screening and dinner for the film and they came out with tears,” said the source. In the film, set in 1913, actor Dev Patel essays Ramanujan, a 25year-old shipping clerk and selftaught genius, who failed out of college due to his near-obsessive, solitary study of mathematics. Though Ramanujan had almost no formal training in pure mathe-
matics, he made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. He passed away at the age of 32 in 1920. “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, which also stars Jeremy Irons, Devika Bhise, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones and Arundhati Nag, was slated to release in India this week.

Will seek India’s help to fix Pak, says Trump India can help out the US in dealing with the “problem” of “semi-stable” nuclear-armed Pakistan, shouts Donald Trump think that would go on the other side of the ledger, and that could really be a disaster,” Trump said. However, the presidential aspirant did not specify what “disaster” he was talking about.

R
epublican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said this week that India can help out the US in dealing with the “problem” of “semi-stable” nucleararmed Pakistan. Trump’s remarks came during a town-hall meeting in Indianapolis in response to a question on how he would deal with countries like Pakistan, which has sometimes “double dealt” with the US. “We’ve given them (Pakistan) money and they’ve double-dealt us,” the interviewer from Fox News said. “The problem with Pakistan — I mean, they have nuclear weapons, and — which is a real problem. Again, the single biggest problem, we have nuclear weapons ... But it’s semi-unstable and we don’t want to see total instability (in Pakistan),” Trump said.
Sikh politician’s murder: Pak arrests six men
“The problem with Pakistan — they have nuclear weapons and — which is a real problem.”
Trump said the US has “a little bit of a good relationship” with Pakistan, and if he becomes the president, he will try to keep good relations with Islamabad.
“That’s very much against my grain to say that, but, a country -and that’s always the country I think, if we give them money, we help them out, but if we don’t, I
“At the same time, if you look at India and some of the others, maybe they will be helping us out, because we’re going to look at it,” Trump said. Trump’s remarks came on a day when lawmakers questioned the rationale behind the Obama administration giving billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan without desired results.
Respect political situation in Kashmir, urges UN ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
T ISLAMABAD: Pakistani police have arrested six men allegedly paid to kill a prominent Sikh politician in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the media reported. According to police, the assassination of Minority Affairs Minister Sardar Soran Singh last week in Buner district was arranged by rival Sikh politician Baldev Kumar, Efe news reported. Baldev Kumar had sought a seat with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party but had been passed over for Soran Singh which led to the murder, said Deputy Inspector General Azad Khan. The Pakistani Taliban had falsely claimed responsibility for the murder, said the police.
aking a hands-off approach on Kashmir, UN Peace Building Commission chair Macharia Kamau has said that the primacy of politics and the local conditions that drive any negotiations between India and Pakistan have to be “respected.” Answering questions at a news conference, Kamau said that the Kashmir issue “will be resolved in the context of the local domestic political environment between Pakistan and India.” Kamau is also Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN. Outlining the Commission’s three-fold approach to the Kashmir issue, he cited “the primacy of politics” and said, “We have to respect the local conditions that drive the negotiations.” Another element was that “we respect the idea they must sustain peace, so the situation cannot be allowed to deteriorate,” he said. And he set the limit to any role in dealing with the dispute, ruling out any direct involvement. He said, “We

reach out to as many of the institutions within the subcontinent to support this (peace) process moving forward. That is the ambition that we would have for that process on the subcontinent.” “Will it have an overnight fundamental impact that would change everything on the ground?” Kamau asked rhetorically and said, “That is a ‘may be’ precisely because the situations on the ground are driven by different forces other than the ones that we
are looking to address ourselves.” Responding to a reporter’s question if that meant a solution to the almost 70-year dispute was not likely, he said, “We never say never in our business. That is not the way.” He added, “The whole idea of building peace is to always seek solutions and look for the historical moment that will avail of the opportunity to engage and to bring the instruments that are now available to us in the context of the resolutions to bear on the situation”.
SHORT TAKES ‘US lifted n-sanctions only on paper’ TEHRAN: Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has denounced US’ attempts to “sabotage” the nuclear deal that ended international sanctions against Tehran, and described Washington’s commitment to it as only on paper. According to sources, Khamenei, the highest political and religious figure in the country, said during a meeting that despite the nuclear agreements, “hostility” against Iran by Israel and the US continues, which means his country’s distrust of Washington remains absolute, EF news reported. In particular, Khamenei referred to the obstacles that still prevent Iranian banks from operating with the outside world, and particularly the reluctance of European financial institutions to work with Iran for fear of sanctions from the US.
Kabir Khan denies protest in Karachi KARACHI: Reacting to reports that he was welcomed here with protests and anti-India slogans, “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” director Kabir Khan urged media persons of both countries to “ignore” such stories. There were reports that noisy protests had erupted at Karachi airport on April 27 against the Bollywood director as he was about to board a plane to go to Lahore. Demonstrators mobbed Khan while shouting anti-India slogans asking him ‘why he did not make movies depicting the role played by the Indian intelligence agency RAW in Pakistan’
‘Pakistan helped US get Osama bin Laden’ WASHINGTON: Pakistan helped the US get Osama bin Laden, a US investigative journalist has said. “More than ever,” said the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh when asked if he believes Pakistan helped the US get Al-Qaeda group founder Osama bin Laden. When Hersh made this claim in an article published last year, the White House rejected the story as false. Major US media outlets also rejected his claim as incorrect. Hersh repeated the claim in his new book “The Killing of Osama bin Laden” published this week, insisting he was right, Dawn online reported. Since last year, Hersh said, his belief has cemented as the journalist found new evidences, and was deceptive of the US’ official account of how bin Laden was found in his compound. Hersh said Pakistan had detained bin Laden in 2006 and kept him in prison with the backing of Saudi Arabia.

Chopper scam haunts Congress Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh dare the Bharatiya Janata Party over AgustaWestland deal as the BJP tried to corner the main opposition party IANS, NEW DELHI
Sonia must reveal who gained: Shah
A
combative Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday dismissed the bribery charges in the VVIP chopper scam as the BJP tried to corner the main opposition party. Sonia Gandhi, whose name figures in a judgment by an Italian court, said she was “not afraid” and dubbed the allegations as false. Manmohan Singh and former defence minister A.K. Antony echoed the sentiment. The Congress, in turn, accused the Narendra Modi government of trying to help the Italian firm which had been blacklisted. The issue sparked tensions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. A Milan court sent Finmeccanica’s former CEO Giuseppe Orsi and AgustaWestland ex-head Bruno Spagnolini to jail for false accounting and corruption in the sale of 12 VVIP choppers to India. The court ruling refers to Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, her secretary Ahmad Patel and also former Indian Air Force chief S.P. Tyagi. Congress members were in
NEWS DIGEST Breakthrough eluded Delhi talks: Pak team ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry said that there was no breakthrough in talks with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar on his recent trip to New Delhi. The foreign secretary, who was in Delhi on April 26 to attend the Heart of Asia Senior Officials’ meeting, held talks with his Indian counterpart on bilateral issues, including resumption of the peace dialogue, Dawn online reported on April 28.
Parliament logjam dents markets MUMBAI: Profit booking, coupled with the logjam in parliament and negative global cues, subdued the Indian equity markets on April 28. The sell-off was accelerated by a marginal decline in crude oil prices and the decision by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) to maintain the status quo in its monetary policy. This led the key indices of the Indian equity markets to trade in the red during the late-afternoon session.
NEW DELHI: Hitting back at Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP president Amit Shah asked her to clarify who were the beneficiaries of the VVIP chopper scam. “It has been established by an Italian court that kickbacks were given. Rather than saying she is not afraid of anyone, she (Sonia) should clarify who received the kickbacks,” Shah told reporters. “Who was in the power then? It was UPA. They should b ring out the truth.” Shah said: “She might not be afraid of anyone but we the leaders of BJP are afraid of the Constitution, democracy and public modesty.” IN THE EYE OF A STORM: Congress president Sonia Gandhi. uproar in the Rajya Sabha when BJP’s Subramanian Swamy named Sonia Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha during zero hour while speaking on the AgustaWestland deal. “It is touching to see leader of opposition relying on (Christian) Michel for what he said orally but the high court of Italy have recorded a letter written by Michel stat-
ing that Sonia Gandhi is the main...” Swamy couldn’t finish his sentence. Congress members sprung to their feet and rushed towards the treasury benches aggressively. Soon after, Sonia Gandhi hit back, saying she was “not afraid” of any inquiry and there was nothing to hide.
She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of indulging in character assassination. “We have nothing to hide. Let them (government) take my name, I am not afraid of anyone because there is no basis to that allegation. They amount to calumny. Where is the proof? They are lying. This is part of their (BJP’s) strategy of
Prez rule to continue in Uttarakhand: SC IANS, NEW DELHI
P
resident’s Rule will continue in Uttarakhand till further orders, the Supreme Court ruled this week, implying that there will be no April 29 floor test for the ousted Congress government as ordered by the state high court. The apex court said the hearing would resume from May 3 on the central government’s plea challenging the Uttarakhand High Court order that had revoked President’s Rule in the hill state. The top court extended its April 22 interim ruling, putting on hold the high court order and allowing the central government to amend its petition challenging the high court order after a detailed judgment was made available. The apex court bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh said they would hear the matter for three days and pronounce their judgment before the summer break by mid-May. Meanwhile, the Congress welcomed the order, insisting it expects a fair and favorable judgment from the apex court soon

after it begins hearing the matter again from May 3. "We don't agree with government's argument that the issue can't be discussed in parliament since it is sub judice. The President's Rule needs approval from parliament; so despite the Supreme Court allowing it, the government needs to come to parliament as it
was brought in through an ordinance," party spokesperson Madhu Yakshi Goud told IANS. The central government had imposed President's Rule on Uttarakhand last month after receiving a report from the governor alleging the Congress was involved in horse-trading to save its government.
character assassination,” Gandhi told the media. Union minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said Sonia Gandhi should ask the Italian court why she was named in the documents. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh also rebutted the charges. “There is no case. My party will respond.”
Oust Mamata, save Bengal: Rahul KOLKATA: Against the backdrop of chants of “Lal Salaam” and “Congress Zindabad”, CPI-M veteran and former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi shared the stage, calling for the ouster of the “undemocratic” Mamata Banerjee government to save the state. With just two days to go for the all important fifth phase of the assembly polls, an impressive turnout at the Park Circus ground witnessed the rare camaraderie between the duo as they castigated the Trinamool Congress government over a host of issues and affirmed that the Congress-Left Front alliance will come to power. The ailing Bhattacharjee, who has largely kept away from the heat and dust of the campaign, started off his first full-length speech at an open rally for the ongoing assembly polls by addre ssing the Congress leader as “Dear Rahul Gandhi” and described the meet as “rare” in the country’s political history.

India’s ambitious toilet-construction programme — part of the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) mission to make India open-defecation free by 2019 is slipping, according to government data submitted to the Lok Sabha. Another part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, to process urban garbage, is also failing its targets. Even if the toilet program, started in September 2015, is brought on track, Indian cities and towns currently process no more than a third of the sewage generated by 377 million people, IndiaSpend reported in January 2016. The rest is randomly dumped in rivers, seas, lakes and wells, polluting three-fourths of India’s water bodies. As many as 85 million people in urban India lack adequate sanitation, more than Germany’s population. About 1.9 million toilets in urban areas are under construc-
tion, according to the government, but progress is slow. Four of five states constructing most toilets governed by the BJP Four of the five states that do best in toilet construction are governed by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gujarat constructed the most toilets until December 2015, with 327,880, followed by Madhya Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh, the only non-BJP state in the top five, comes in third. Some areas that are constructing toilets slowly, such as Delhi and Uttarakhand, may
rashtra, according to a Central Pollution Control Board report. Only 36.8 percent wards in urban areas reported a proper liquid-waste disposal system for community and public toilets, according to the Swachhata status report released by the National Sample Survey Organization. Delhi (86.8 percent), Gujarat (64.4 percent) and Tamil Nadu (62.6 percent) were among the states reporting a high percentage of wards with proper liquid-waste disposal systems for community and public toilets, the report said.
As many as 85 million people in urban India lack adequate sanitation, more than Germany’s population. already have a high percentage of homes with toilets. More Indians (households) use toilets in urban areas (81 percent) than in rural areas (43 percent), according to a Lok Sabha reply. Use varies, as some cities have better toilet facilities than others, although there is no reliable data. As far as community toilet construction goes, Delhi tops the list, indicating a government effort to provide sanitation to slums, which is largely where such toilets are built. Sewage systems are as important as toilet construction. India has 522 working sewage treatment plants, 62 of which are in Maha-
Maharashtra just announced it would clean its rivers by increasing investments in sewage treatment and solid-waste management. The government’s focus, thus far, has been on industrial effluents alone. A Swachh Bharat cess, levied from November 2015, ramped up toilet construction nationwide, as IndiaSpend reported this week. Nearly 16 million toilets were constructed over two years (in rural areas), according to the government; 95 million need to be built over the next three to meet the governmentÂ’s target of making India open-defecation free by 2019.
he has never been to India but is not oblivious to Indian culture as she calls it a vast cauldron. Golden Globewinning actress Rachel Bloom points out that many facets of the country are entering foreign shores in a “trendy” but false manner. People in the West are “not really getting into the heart of what it is in India”, she added. Asked about what all Bloom, who won the Best Actress in a TV Series — Comedy for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” — earlier this year, has heard about Indian culture, she said: “It’s too vast”. “But I think that there is something that Americans do, you know you take the example of yoga. I know that in India it’s much more kind of humble and a sacred practice, but here it’s kind of commoditised,” Bloom told IANS. She added: “We sell fancy clothes to wear to yoga classes for $20 or $30 or $40... it is kind of like a rich elitist thing and I know that that isn’t the case in India. It’s like we have taken some things that are sacred and humble in India and we’ve made them trendy here in ways that are false and not really getting into the heart of what it is in India.” Bloom, apart from being the lead actress of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” has also created the musical-comedy-drama series along with Aline Brosh McKenna. The show, which has been renewed for its second season, has entered the Indian shores with season one. It is being aired in India on Star World and Star World HD. Bloom, who rose to fame in the virtual world with her musical and comedic skills via YouTube videos, says she is “aware” about the world of Bollywood, which is oft known for painting the big screen canvas with myriad hues of feelings along with music and dance. Bloom said: “I love Bollywood. First of all, our editor of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’, he is an Indian and his whole family actually is in India and works in Bollywood. And so, we have a very natural Bollywood tie at ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ with our editor Kabir Aktar. And secondly, I think it’s wonderful because in America the art of a film musical has really softened up.
Rachel Bloom
“In the second episode, we have a Bollywood number. The Bollywood number is sung by a yoga teacher, it’s kind of making fun of Americans and what they think Indian culture is as opposed to what Indian culture actually is. So we’re doing homage to Bollywood and making fun of Americans through all the ways they represent Indian culture in the second episode.” The show narrates story of a successful New York lawyer Rebecca Bunch, who decides to follow her ex-boyfriend, Josh Chan, to suburban West Covina, California. It accounts her romantic rendezvous in a hilarious manner interwoven with the use of music.

India in ‘GPS club’ soon The country puts into orbit its seventh and final navigation satellite with its own rocket; completes the system in sky
Modi hails scientists

I
ndia on April 28 successfully put into orbit its seventh and final navigation satellite IRNSS-1G - with its own rocket in copy-book style. With this, India successfully completed putting into orbit all the seven navigation satellites to complete the system in the sky. Exactly at 12.50 p.m. the PSLV rocket standing 44.4 metres tall and weighing 320 tonnes tore into the afternoon skies with fierce orange flames at its tail. Gathering speed every second, the rocket raced towards the heavens amidst the cheers of ISRO officials and the media team assembled at the rocket port here. At the rocket mission control room, scientists were glued to their computer screens watching the
Kerala wants to be declared drought hit THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala wants the central government to declare the state drought hit, it was announced on April 28. A meeting chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy decided to accept the recommendation of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) that the state must be declared drought hit. The meeting was attended by senior cabinet ministers and top officials from various departments. Chandy will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union home and agriculture ministers to see that certain relaxation of norms were made so as to enable the central government to declare Kerala drought hit. “If these relaxations are made, then we will get central assistances to tide over the situation the state is facing due to the heat wave,” Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash told reporters. The present heat wave was the worst in five years. The meeting also decided to give a compensation of Rs.4 lakh to those who died due to the heat wave.

rocket escaping the earth’s gravitational pull. Just over 20 minutes into the flight, the PSLV rocket ejected its sole passenger - IRNSS1F - at an altitude of 488.9 km. Soon after this, the satellite’s solar panels were deployed. The satellite’s control was then taken over by the Mission Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka. The MCF will manage the satellite’s orbit raising operations firing the on-board motors till it is placed in its slotted orbit. Simply put, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System
(IRNSS) is similar to the GPS (global positioning system) of the US, Glonass of Russia and Galileo of Europe as well as China’s Beidou. While GPS and Glonass are fully functional global systems, the Chinese and the Japanese systems offer regional coverage and Europe’s Galileo is yet to be operational. India will formally join the select group of nations owing such system once IRNSS is declared operational after checking the systems - space (satellites), ground (ground stations) and the user-end signal receivers. Only after the system is declared
operational, will user-end signal receiver makers seriously get into the manufacture of equipment for use at the retail end, industry officials told IANS. According to Indian space agency the applications of IRNSS are: terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, vehicle tracking and fleet management, terrestrial navigation for hikers and travellers, disaster management, integration with mobile phones, mapping and geodetic data capture and visual and voice navigation for drivers. In other words, IRNSS could be
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian space scientists after a successful launch of the country’s seventh navigation satellite that blasted Narendra Modi off from the spaceport of Sriharikota. “Our scientists have achieved many accomplishments. Through space science, lives of people can be transformed. India has launched seven navigation satellites which have been successful,” he said in a televised address. “Our efforts will not only help India but can help fellow Saarc nations as well,” Modi said.
said to be the “Indian GPS”. Apart from the civilian applications, the IRNSS will be used for defence purposes as well. Immediately after the 1,425 kg IRNSS-1G satellite was ejected by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C33) rocket, scientists at the mission control centre clapped their hands happily. “The launch was successful,” ISRO chairman A.S.Kiran Kumar said soon after. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will raise the satellite to its home slot over the next couple of days.
‘Telangana focusing on agenda of water’ IANS, HYDERABAD
T
elangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has said the state was now focussing on water resources, the unfinished agenda of the Telangana movement. He vowed to irrigate one crore acres of land with the re-designing of irrigation projects and restoration of 46,000 tanks under the government’s flagship scheme Mission Kakatiya. KCR, as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief is popularly known, also reiterated that the party will not seek votes in the next elections if it fails to provide drinking water connection to every household in the state under Mission Bhageeratha. He was addressing the 15th plenary of the party and later a public meeting at Khammam. Braving the scorching heat, about 4,000 party leaders from across the state attended the day-long plenary. Thousands of people attended the public meeting in the evening, which turned into a sort of election meeting for the May 16 by-elec-

tion to Palair assembly seat in the district. The Election Commission had given permission for the TRS to hold the plenary and the public meeting on the condition that the official machinery will not be used. KCR, during his speech, referred
to the Election Commission’s action in transferring the Khammam district collector, the superintendent of police and the returning officer on a complaint by the opposition Congress party, which alleged that the TRS was misusing official machinery for the by-elec-
tion. Welcoming the poll panel’s decision, KCR hit back at the Congress, saying the TRS need not resort to misuse of official machinery as it enjoyed the wholehearted support of the people as was evident from the results of all elections held in the state during the last two years. He recalled that “water, funds and jobs” was the slogan of the Telangana movement and claimed that the state now has all funds at its disposal for its development and jobs are being provided for its people. Referring to the severe drought and drinking water scarcity in the state, KCR said the TRS was trying to find a permanent solution to the recurring drought and drinking water problem by completing all irrigation projects and the two missions. “It is painful to see pictures of dried wells and people walking kilometres to fetch water,” said the chief minister. He promised that 6,200 villages will get piped drinking water supply by December this year while 95 percent of the state will be covered by next year.

‘There’s no one like Rajinikanth’
A house plays key character in Kalam: Lakshmi
Actress Radhika Apte says working with superstar Rajinikanth was one of the best experiences of her life IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctress Radhika Apte, who is working with superstar Rajinikanth in the Tamil film Kabali, said that he is very inspiring and that there is no one else like him. “Who wouldn’t enjoy working with Rajinikanth? I enjoyed a lot. I think it was one of the best experiences of my life, because it was Rajini sir. It was very inspiring, he’s such a wonderful man, there is no one like him,” said Radhika about her experiences at the trailer launch of her film Phobia. In Kabali, directed by Pa. Ranjith, Rajinikanth reportedly plays a character based on a real-life don and Radhika plays his wife. The final schedule was shot in Malaysia
recently. “Malaysia shoot was very good, there was a lot of heat, shooting is over and dubbing is going on. It will release soon,” she added. In her Hindi film Phobia, she plays an agoraphobic, a person who has a phobia of open spaces, and doesn’t want to step out of the house. About the psychological thriller, she said: “It was one of the most difficult films to do, there was a lot of research that went into it. It is an actually disorder, it has its own symptoms, it is biological. Panic attack comes like how someone develops fever. You can’t do anything about it, because it naturally comes to you.
‘Career’s toughest role in Commando 2’ IANS, CHENNAI
A
ctress Adah Sharma, known for her work in films like 1920, Heart Attack and “Kshanam, is gearing up to do “full-length action” in Vidyut Jammwal-starrer Commando 2. She says it’s her career’s toughest role. “This is the first time I’ll be doing full-length action. It’s easily the toughest role of my career. Over the last few months, I’ve been
undergoing special workshops. I don’t think anybody would’ve seen a leading lady like this before,”
‘This is the first time I’ll be doing fulllength action and is one of the toughest role of my career’ Adah told IANS. Paired opposite Vidyut, the
Hasee Toh Phasee actress has already started shooting for the film. Adah’s role has some unique characteristics and she says it will be revealed soon. Produced by Vipul Shah, the latest schedule of the project starts in Mumbai next week. In June-July, the team will leave on abroad schedule. Adah is trained in Kalaripayattu, and she believes this ancient martial arts form of Kerala, will come very handy while working on this new project.
CHENNAI: Actress Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli says nearly 80 percent of forthcoming Tamil horrordrama “Kalam”, which releases in cinemas on April 29, unfolds inside a house which plays a pivotal character in the film. “Almost 80 percent of the film takes place in the house which plays a very important character. It’s one of the most beautiful houses I’ve come across in the city. It’s a very ancient house and each room has about 10 doors. There’s no story without the house,” Lakshmi told IANS. Directed by Robert Raaj, the film also stars Srinivas, Amzath and Madhu Sudhan. Kalam will be a logical horror film, says Lakshmi. “Unlike the recent horror comedies, our film is not intended to be funny. It has the usual share of thrills but everything you see will be logical and sensible,” she said. Although the experience working with a new team was encouraging and exhausting.
FILM REVIEW | TELUGU
‘Sarrainodu’ — Strictly for commercial cinema lovers
D
irector Boyapati Sreenu has succeeded in increasing the dosage of violence with each outing, making his movies more commercial and equally cringe-worthy than anyone could imagine in their wildest dreams. In Sarrainodu, when Allu Arjun makes a stylish entry, flying off a jeep, you might find the gravity-defying stunt silly, but the truth is that no other director could’ve given Allu Arjun a much better introduction and there’s no denying that the masses love it. The film is strictly dedicated to hardcore commercial cinema lovers. It’s for those who never ask how Catherine Tresa, who plays an MLA, can look drop-dead gor-
Film: “Sarrainodu”; Director: Boyapati Sreenu; Cast: Allu Arjun, Rakul Preet Singh, Catherine Tresa, Aadi Pinisetty, Brahmanandam, Suman, Jayaprakash, Pradeep Rawat and Vidyullekha Raman; Rating: *** geous. It’s for those who never ask how their hero can fight an army of bad guys -- not once, not twice, but so many times -- and yet emerge victorious without a single scratch. It’s for those who never ask why their hero usually plays a jobless wastrel. It’s for those who never
ask why a menacingly portrayed villain ends up as a laughing stock by the end of the film. If you want answers to these questions, then
Sarrainodu is definitely not the film you should be walking into. Sarrainodu is the kind of film where the hero rises to the occa-
sion, despite the wafer thin plot, and owns the show with his terrific screen presence. Allu Arjun, as the mass-appealing hero, is a treat to watch every single time he flexes his muscles, almost ripping his shirt sleeve. On the commercial meter, Boyapati and Arjun go full guns blazing with Sarrainodu, and I doubt if any other director could’ve pulled this off. Perhaps, the title, which roughly translates to the “Right Guy”, is apt for Boyapati, who wears his commercial tag like a medallion. However, this leaves us with one question which is, how long can he sustain making this kind of films? By Haricharan Pudipeddi

Rio Olympics: B-Town backs Salman as India’s goodwill ambassador But several members of the Indian sports fraternity question the IOA’s decision IANS, MUMBAI
Aish comes to Salman’s rescue!
C
elebrities like actresspolitician Kirron Kher and filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya have defended the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) decision to appoint superstar Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympics. “It is a very good decision. I am very proud of Salman Khan. All people who are trying to say that only a sportsman should be appointed as an ambassador, I would like to differ from them,” Kirron said at the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Awards event here. “No need to think that only a sportsman can represent the country. Any eminent personality who inspires us can be a brand ambassador. I welcome the decision.” The Kick star was recently unveiled as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympics to be held later this year. The move was questioned by several members of the Indian sports fraternity with 2012 London Olympics wrestling bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt making

his displeasure public with a series of tweets barely an hour after the decision was announced. Kirron also said: “I would request the sports fraternity to be more magnanimous. Be a goodhearted person and give Salman his due respect. We actors are also hard workers and give our best.” Barjatya, who has delivered numerous hits like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with Salman, was also present at the event. He said: “It’s a matter of great happiness because there is no one more just and appreciative like him. He has
always been a sports lover, he plays good cricket, football and is a good cyclist. I know him closely so, I’m very happy for him.” Budding actor Sooraj Pancholi, who was launched by Salman in the industry, was also present and said: “I think that’s a good decision, because he is a very known face. He is doing a film on wrestling Sultan, so maybe because of that (he was selected).” When filmmaker Karan Johar was asked about the controversy at the wrap-up party of his production Baar Baar Dekho, he said: “I
love Salman Khan. Whatever he does, he is the best for it.” Sidharth Malhotra said: “I don’t know much about the controversy. As far as the Olympics are concerned, people who made the decision might have made the right decision. He is a man who is known for his fitness. The authorities who selected him, I am sure they thought of something.” Actress Katrina Kaif, who was romantically linked to Salman at one point of time, said: “A controversy with Salman, is it a new thing?”
MUMBAI: Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, conveyed her opinion on the recent controversy with superstar Salman Khan Aishwarya Rai being named Goodwill Ambassador for the Rio Olympic Games, but chose not to name him. When asked about the controversy at the launch of the Cannes 2016 collection, Aishwarya said, “Anybody who is doing good to represent the country, and anyone who is working or speaking or standing up for the betterment of whatever vocation we have in our country, be it sports, be it art, be it music, I think that is wonderful and that is what needs to be done.” Salman’s controversy pertains to certain sportspersons such as Yogeshwar Dutt, Milkha Singh and Gautam Gambhir raising questions to the appointment of a filmstar, rather than a sportsperson.
‘Nil Battey...’: Swara Bhaskar shines as a mother dreaming big dreams
S Milkha hits back at Salim IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndian athletics legend Milkha Singh on April 26 hit back at Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan by saying that the movie industry hasn’t done any favor by making a film on him. Salim Khan has tried to defend his son’s appointment as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympic Games. In his bid to defend his son, Salim tweeted: “Milkhaji it is not Bollywood it is the Indian Film Industry and that too the largest in the world. The same industry
which resurrected you from fading away in oblivion.” Salim referred to the soaring popuSalim Khan larity the 80year-old Milkha achieved after the release of a biopic on him named “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”. “Let him (Salim) have his views. I don’t have anything to say regarding this. I have already put in my views. All the members of the Olympic contingent are our ambassadors,” the multiple Asian champion was quoted as saying by Times Now news channel.
wara’s spontaneous unrehearsed seemingly uncomplicated interpretations of the most layered emotions is not only exemplary, it is a one-woman acting school on how not to like you are …well, acting. There are many sequences in the very oddly titled Nil Battey Sanatta where Swara sweeps you into her character’s innermost world of melancholy and despair without making you drown in maudlinism. Playing a domestic help Chanda who dreams of making her stubborn spoilt daughter Apeksha (confident newcomer Riya Shukla) into something bigger than destiny decrees for the poor, Swara delivers a virtuoso performance. She gets the minutest of Chanda’s feeling on screen without screaming for attention. Of course it helps that Swara has stunning support from her costars. Chanda’s rapport with her thoroughly unlikable daughter, and more specially the easygoing kinship she shares with her employee (Ratna Pathak Shah) are signs of maturity and wisdom way
Film: “Nil Battey Sanatta”; Cast: Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Pathak Shah, Pankaj Tripathy, Riya Shukla; Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari; Rating: **** beyond the film’s placard-flashing theme on female literacy. Yes, there is a message. And a very basic one at that. Girls need to get educated. Period. Ratna Pathak Shah and Pankaj Tripathy (the latter as the extreme-
ly benign school principal) remind us what capable actors can do to a worthy film. Riya Shukla as the stubborn daughter slips into an unlikeable part. It’s the kind of sullen sulky daughter’s role that Swara had played with conviction just two years ago in “Listen... Amaya”. This morally uplifting inspirational heartwarming fable is a must watch, if only to see how difficult it is to be simple. And how much we miss those simply told tales of life.

There are so many talented actors in my contemporaries and my seniors... I seek inspiration from each one of them,” Tiger said at the launch event of the song Get ready to fight from his upcoming film Baaghi here. “I know that if I have to establish my identity, I have to stand out and try and be a little different so that people notice my hard work,” he added. About the song, he said: “This song is definitely going to serve as a motivation throughout my life, it’s something that we are hoping will last beyond the film. I dedicate it to the youth of our country who want to get fit and who want to express themselves in some way or the other”. In the song, Tiger is seen involved in some intense training sequences in the martial arts form of Kalaripayattu. He also trains his love interest in the film, Shraddha Kapoor, into beating up the bad guys. “I was blessed that I had a strong base in martial arts. Since Akshay Kumar ji had already started this trend, I thought maybe people will accept me if I come and show a little bit of martial arts in this film. In Heropanti luckily I was accepted for my action and a bit for my dancing as well,” Tiger said. Baaghi is releasing on April 29.

Hrithik’s lawyers, who have released a counter statement on Kangana’s advocate Rizwan Siddiquee’s statement, said: “It is quite obvious that his client has withheld the truth from him, and he has not been privy to the evidences until now. What matters the most to her -- critics’ review or fans’ love? “Critics don’t buy movie tickets. They watch it for free. But it’s the fans who buy the tickets. They are the people who matter the most to me. Besides, I never expect to get any awards. I only crave for my fans’ love. I only hope for my fans’ support,” Sunny told IANS. Is she getting content-driven films in Bollywood? Sunny said: “As actors, that is what we always look for. But, having said that. Content-driven films depend on each person’s perspective. I believe in choosing the films which I find have strong content in it.”

‘Walk for Water’ event by St Louis Bal Vihar
BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS. MO – The Center of India Cultural Education- Bal Vihar of St Louis held a “Walk for Water” event at Vlasis Park Ballwin MO on April 16. The purpose of the walk was to raise funds and create awareness for the water crisis around the world. It was very well organized by the youth group of the school from ages 13 -18 years under the leadership of the school yoga team leader Surekha Bidep and the communication and marketing leader Shoba Shekar. Around the world, millions of women and children, mostly girls, spend up to 5 hours a day walking to fetch water for their daily use. Without access to clean
S
water, they collect dirty water from rivers, streams, or ponds and carry it home in heavy containers on their heads or strapped to their backs. Every 20 seconds a child dies due to water-related disease. Five million girls don’t go to school because their time is spent carrying water. As part of the Walk for Water, participants were expected to carry gallons of water and walk to experience the struggle millions of people go through every day. The event, which was attended by about 230 people, raised over $3000 which will go to Water.org, a non-profit organization that helps build wells, and the infrastructure to access safe and sanitized water in countries such as Africa South America, India,
Bangladesh, and Philippines. Center for Indian Cultural Education - Bal Vihar of St. Louis, a non-profit organization, has since its inception in 1992 has serving the Metro St. Louis Indian community. The primary focus of this organization is to provide Indian cultural education to students age 5-18, its application and integration with the global multicultural and multifaceted society. They are also taught discipline, tolerance and devotion in their daily routine. The ultimate goal is “to throw the light of cultural knowledge on every child, to make every child an outstanding citizen and to spread the song of peace and harmony around the world.”
ESOI brings eSports to Indian campuses BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-- Elite Sports of India (ESOI) is bringing eSports to the world’s second most populous country this summer. The US-based company has reached an agreement with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to introduce competitive gaming at the university level. ESOI acquired the rights to organize and promote the first-ever AIU-sanctioned InterZonal eSports tournament this September. Lovely Professional University in India’s Punjab region agreed to host the inaugural tournament, with an exact date yet to be determined. It is not the first time that ESOI has brought a new sport to the subcontinent. After launching a professional American football league, Elite Football League of India, the company introduced the sport to India’s universities. It also acquired the commercial rights for India’s university basketball tournament and founded the country’s first pro basketball league. ESOI founder Richard Whelan described the new project as the “fastest and easiest” venture to launch after having laid the necessary groundwork at the university level through American football and basketball. “It’s also the most economical,” he added. ESOI’s new eSports arm, called Elite eSports of India (EESI), will now be tasked with getting universities to sign up, looking for a marketing company to get the word out and finding hardware manufacturers to establish the infrastructure. EESI is expected to announce the game it will use at the inaugural tournament within the next 90 days, Whelan said. “It will most likely be one of the top five games used in the industry,” he added. Those include titles

Hanuman Jayanti at Shivalaya temple
BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX -- Hanuman Jayanti was celebrated on April 22--the 15th Day of Shukla Paksha, a full-moon day (Purnima) during the lunar month of Chaitra at Shivalaya Temple of Greater Boston. It is the celebration of the auspicious arrival day of Shri Hanuman, an ardent devotee and eternal servitor of Lord Sri Ramachandra. Lord Hanuman is a symbol of strength and energy and is known for his immortal devotion to Lord Rama. Hindu scriptures say that prays with pure heart and soul to Lord Hanuman will definitely bring well-being for everyone. The celebrations were started with a special Abhishekam for the Deity of Hanuman. Various Vaidic rituals were conducted by Pandit Jay Narayan Badal Ji with greatest devotion to mark the birth of the Vanara God, Hanuman. Lord Hanuman Ji is adorned with beautiful Vastram and Alankaram. Hundreds of devotees enthusiastically participated in the special Puja and mass prayers with full gusto to seek the lord’s blessings. They recited Hanuman Chalisa in full chorus and prayed calmly to the lord for good health and strength as Lord Hanuman is said to destroy all that is evil and keeps the devotees energized forever. Pandit Ji blessed everyone and offered teertham, tilak, fruits and laddoos to all devotees and children with due esteem. Shri. Sudarshan Ji thanked all the devotees for making this event a notable one. Maha Mangalarati was followed by serving of delicious Maha Prasad to all the devotees by Shri Dutt, Shri. Prem Chawla, Shri Subhas Bansal and team.

Ring making fake credit cards busted in Queens such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike and Call of Duty. ESOI will also look for a broadcast and streaming partner to gain the highest possible viewership for the event. The company currently has a partnership with Ten Sports networks for its other sports properties. Whelan said that ESOI is talking to a number of broadcasters, but has not yet signed a deal as it considers the on-screen exposure germane to EESI’s success. “Viewership turns into money and money drives the size of the sport,” he said. “And if you look at the viewership numbers they are staggering.” Last year’s League of Legends World Championship drew more than 36 million viewers, which is more than the NBA Finals (avg. 19.94 million) or MLB World Series (avg. 14.7 million). photo caption (L-R) Richard Whelan, Kurt Melcher,
Janice Foreman, Dr. Svarnias ESOI’s move into eSports follows large investments by Turner Broadcasting and Alibaba in the industry. It also added Kurt Melcher in an advisory role to expedite and enhance the development of eSports programs at Indian universities. Melcher, the associate athletic director at Robert Morris University in Chicago, is a pioneer in the industry after creating the first eSports scholarship in the US. “Kurt’s connections within the industry along with his name recognition provide us with instant credibility,” Whelan said. “It is hard to predict what eSports will look like in five years,” Melcher said. “But more attention and more corporate involvement can only help the ecosystem to evolve.” Current eSports sponsors include companies such as Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Samsung and Nissan. ESOI also has plans for an IPO in the near term.

IAMACF raises funds for free health clinic

Indian doc attacks Uber driver, fired
Anjali Ramkissoon
Indian American Medication Association Charitable Foundation Executive Board
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- On April 16, the Indian American Medical Association of Illinois and the Indian American Medication Association Charitable Foundation held its Semi-Annual Meeting and Annual Charity Fundraising Gala at the Waterford Banquet Hall in Elmhurst, Illinois. Attended by over 300 donors and supporters, this year’s IAMACF Charity Gala helped raise funds for its free community health clinic, located at 2645 W. Peterson Avenue in Chicago. For over 20 years, the IAMACF health clinic has been providing free primary care, lab testing and limited pharmaceutical services to about 3,000 patients a year. This year’s gala was emceed by Ravi Baichwal, television anchor for ABC Chanel 7 News and keynoted by Dr. Jay
C
Bhatt. Dr. Bhatt, Chief Health Officer at Illinois Health and Hospital Association. The “people we treat at the clinic, are low income individuals, who represent a host of immigrant and refugee communities residing in the area, who have no health insurance or are under-insured with no other healthcare facility nearby that they can turn to for free, walk-in health care. “We’re it I’m afraid,” said Dr. Rambha Radhakrishnan, IAMACF’s volunteer Medical Director. The IAMACF clinic is often the only place where many of the area’s South Asian immigrant residents turn to because of language access and culturally cognizant services, which they receive at the IAMACF clinic. So, this fundraiser is immensely important in that the funds raised help the clinic keep its doors open and serving some of the area’s most underserved populations.
This year, we were very fortunate to have gala sponsors like Wealth Management Network, Seasons Hospice and Medstar Laboratory. We were also very fortunate to have received a $250K commitment last year, by Dr. Ashok Ray” added Dr. Annita John, IAMACF’s Board Chair. However, she added “it’s never too late for people to donate or give of their time, especially if they are a physician looking for meaningful opportunities to volunteer and donate their medical skills to help those less fortunate.” This year’s IAMACF Community Service Award was given to Dr. Ashley Spielburg, Associate Professor of Optometry at the Illinois Eye Institute, who has been performing free eye exams on diabetic patients one Saturday every month for the last 4 years at the IAMACF Clinic.
BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- A 30-yearold Indian-origin doctor at a US hospital has been fired after a video that showed her attacking a hapless Uber driver and his vehicle in Miami went viral. Anjali Ramkissoon has been on administrative leave since the video of her tantrum, reportedly fully inebriated, surfaced in January. According to a statement released by a spokeswoman for Jackson Health System, Ramkissoon’s service was terminated from her position. “Jackson Health System is moving forward with the termination of Dr. Anjali Ramkissoon, a resident doctor,” read the statement. “She is entitled to an appeal process.” Ramkissoon, who was a four-year neurology resident at the hospital, was seen in the video attempting to strike and scratch the driver, climbing into the man’s vehicle and throwing objects out of it, all the while yelling and swearing at him and trying to force him to drive her home without a reservation. The driver has so far opted to remain anonymous and has declined to press charges.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Navratri is a ninenight festival of dance and rhythm, dedicated to nine forms of Goddess Durga. It is one of the important religious festivals in India, celebrated with great pomp, affection and zeal. This festival is celebrated twice in a year with great devotion and fervor all over India. First time it is celebrated as Chaitra Navratri or Vasant Navratri during March-April and second time as Sharad Navratri during September-October. During Chaitra Navratri, the ninth day is celebrated as Ram Navami while after Sharad Navratri, the next day is celebrated as Dussehera or Vijayadashami, marking the victory of good over evil. The devotees worship these Nine Incarnations of Goddess Durga for nine days to get blessings of Maa Durga. It is believed that people who worship Maa Bhagwati, do fasting and chant mantras during Navratri will be blessed with prosperity, health and wisdom in their life. People perform special Poojas all night, called the Jaagran, or sing Mata Ki Bhente for a few hours, called Mata Ki Chowki during these nine auspicious days. This year, Chaitra Navratir started on April 8 and culminated with Ram Navami on April 17. Keeping up with the tradition, Hari Om Mandir (HOM) had it Vishal Navratrey Mata Ki Chauki of 2016 on the second day

According to the top originator rankings, published earlier this month, Sampat was ranked on three separate lists: Top Dollar Volume, #163; Top Refinance Volume, #75 and Most Loans Closed, #152. As a top producing originator for more than 20 years, Sampat originated $101.2M in mortgage loans in 2015 with 320 units closed. Sampat joined 1st Advantage Mortgage in 2004. “I’m thrilled to be ranked year after year on Scotsman’s prestigious top originator lists,” stated Sampat. “It validates my commitment to my clients in providing them with low rates, a smooth loan process and exceptional service.” Sampat was ranked among entries from more than 2,400 mortgage professionals across the country. Greece hands over Olympic flame to Rio 2016 organisers It is the first time that the Olympic Games will be held in South America symbolizing the Olympic movement’s values of friendship IANS, ATHENS
T
he flame that will burn for Rio Olympic Games was handed over to the Brazilian organizers in a spectacular ceremony held at Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. At the marble venue of the first modern Olympics in 1896, Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos passed the Sacred Flame to the president of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee Carlos Nuzman on April 27, wishing best success to the XXXI Games, Xinhua news agency reported. “We are handing you over the Flame to carry it to your beautiful country. We are entrusting you with a part of our history, a part of our culture,” Capralos had said earlier addressing the event. “Conveying the feelings of the whole Olympic family in Greece, those of the members of HOC, of our athletes and of all Greeks as
Bar on IPL matches in Maharashtra stays NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on April 27 dismissed a plea challenging a Bombay High Court ruling prohibiting holding of Indian premier League (IPL) cricket matches in Maharashtra due to unprecedented drought conditions in Vidarbha and Marathwada. The plea was filed by the Maharashtra and Mumbai Cricket Associations. The apex court bench comprising Chief Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice R. Banumathi and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit dismissed the plea after it was given conflicting figures by the senior counsel P. Chidambaram and Abhishek Manu Singhvi on the amount of water that would be needed for watering the cricket grounds and preparing pitches for 12 matches that were scheduled in Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune. The Bombay High Court had on April 13 ordered the relocation all IPL matches in Maharashtra which were scheduled to be held after April 30. The order originally affected 13 matches. Later, the court modified its order, permitting the holding of one match in Pune.

well, I would like to wish you our very best for a most successful organization of the XXXI Olympic Games,” he stressed. In his address Nuzman underlined that it was the first time in history that the Olympic Games will be held in South America symbolizing the Olympic movement’s
timeless values of excellence, friendship and respect. “We understand our responsibility as guardians of the Olympic Flame. The size of the tasks ahead obliges us to move forward rather fast. August is approaching like a flash. When you arrive in Rio, our culture will host you with charm.
There will be plenty of music, poetry, love, excitement,” Nuzman said. “Let’s celebrate together. We have plenty of reasons to be happy. We are building a better future for the boys and girls of the planet. That is the future we have been dreaming of. Certainly the future we deserve,” he concluded. Nuzman left the stadium with the Sacred Light under the warm applause of some 30,000 Greeks and foreign tourists who had flooded the site. Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos, international Olympic movement representatives, and Olympic medalists were also among the crowd that welcomed warmly the Olympic Flame when it entered the stadium. The Sacred Light was carried by the Greek silver medalist in high jumping in the 1996 Atlanta Games Niki Bakogiannis, after having crossed a large part of Greece (about 2,200 km) over the past week.

Archer Deepika equals world record SHANGHAI: Indian archer Deepika Kumari equalled the world record in the woman’s recurve event at the Archery World Cup here on April 27. The 21-year-old scored 686 points out of a maximum of 720 to equal the existing world record set by reigning Olympic and World Champion Ki Bo-bae of South Korea in July last year. Deepika has previously taken silver medals in individual events at the 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions of the Archery World Cup. She also won gold in both the individual and the team recurve events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Even jogging can damage knees? Jogging without any proper prior exercise or knee activity can damage the knee joints IANS, NEW DELHI
J
ogging without any proper prior exercise or knee activity can damage the knee joints requiring them a long duration for recovery, said joint replacement experts. According to them, anyone willing to start jogging should walk for two months, which will help in the increase of flexibility of the body and the knees preventing any kind of strain to the knee joints. “A lot of people directly start jogging to get rid of fats in the body without performing any
‘Childhood obesity continues to rise’ IANS,NEW YORK
T
he alarming increase in childhood obesity rates in the US that began nearly 30 years ago continues unabated, with the biggest increases in severe obesity, says a study. “Despite some other recent reports, we found no indication of a decline in obesity prevalence in the US in any group of children aged two through 19,” said study lead author Asheley Skinner from Duke University School of Medicine. “This is particularly true with severe obesity, which remains high, especially among adolescents,” Skinner noted. The researchers analysed data from the US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, a large, ongoing compilation of health
information that has spanned decades. The researchers found that for 2013-2014, 33.4 percent of children between the ages of two to 19 were overweight. Among those, 17.4 percent had obesity.
Early maternal support boosts child’s brain growth IANS, WASHINGTON
C
hildren who receive adequate care and nurturing from their mothers during the preschool years are likely to have more robust growth in brain structures associated with learning, memory and stress response than children with less supportive mothers, suggests a new study. The findings suggest it may be possible to help children do better in school, cope better in life and devel-
op emotionally by helping parents learn to provide more support and nurturing early in the lives of their children. “This study suggests there’s a sensitive period when the brain responds more to maternal support,” said study first author Joan Luby, professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The findings were published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
These rates were not statistically different than those from the previous reporting period of 2011-2012. Across all categories of obesity, a clear, statistically significant increase continued from 1999 through 2014, the study found.

Isolation may impair hearing NEW YORK: Continuing to have social interaction is key to keeping your ears sensitive even in old age, suggests new research. Hearing socially meaningful sounds can change the ear and enable it to better detect those sounds, the findings showed. “The ear is modifiable,” said one of the researchers Walter Wilczynski, professor at Georgia State University in the US. “It’s plastic. It can change by getting better or worse at picking up signals, depending on particular types of experiences, such as listening to social signals,” Wilczynski explained. The researchers studied the phenomenon in green treefrogs. In the lab, the experimental group heard their species’ specific calls every night for 10 consecutive nights and while the control group heard random tones
Early Edition. In the study, the researchers were able to observe steady growth in the hippocampus of children with supportive mothers across multiple brain scans taken at different time periods, with 127 children receiving three MRI scans each from the time they first started school through early adolescence. The researchers measured nurturing in mothers by closely observing and scoring videotaped interactions between mothers and their children. The investigators observed mothers and children under moderately stressful conditions. “The mother is asked to complete a task while we give the child an attractive gift to open, but we don’t allow it to be opened right away,”
with no social meaning. Then the researchers placed electrodes on the skin near the frogs’ ears and measured the response of their ears to sound. “My guess is people who have a lot of experience with our social vocal signal, which is our speech, this probably helps keep their sensory system in a healthy state that helps them pick out those signals,” Wilczynski said.
Luby said. Parents who are able to maintain their composure and complete assigned tasks while still offering emotional support to their children are rated as more nurturing and supportive. Parents who dismiss their children, or behave in punitive ways during the test, receive lower marks for support. Small changes in support indicated big differences in outcomes, Luby said. In examining the brain scans, they found that children whose mothers were more supportive than average had increases in growth of the hippocampus that were more than two times greater than in those whose mothers were slightly below average on the nurturing scale.
