Among nonsmokers who had diabetes, those who took the diabetes drug metformin had a decrease in lung cancer risk, the findings showed. “Our results suggest that risk might differ by smoking history, with metformin decreasing risk among nonsmokers and increasing risk among current smokers,” said Lori Sakoda, research scientist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California. leading Indian-American attorney has suggested that Modi-Obama hugs contributed to the success of President Barack Obama’s visit to India to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had broken protocol to greet Obama at the New Delhi airport with a hug, noted New York based Ravi Batra, who is Chair of the National Advisory Council of South Asian Affairs, in an interview with an ethnic newspaper. “Obama’s trust in India’s durable commitment to the rule of law, honest desire to honor the spirit of the agreements and national aspirations that embrace peace and abhor war” measured the success of Obama’s India trip, he told the South Asian Times. Modi’s coming to power with a big mandate and his taking “taking exceptional risks” also helped, he said. “Modi is mandate-rich. But that

Why chain India to the past with n-energy? WASHINGTON: Noting that the US has not set up a new nuclear installation for decades, an Indian-American academic has accused President Barack Obama of hypocrisy in pushing India on a technology the US won’t even touch. “Why chain India to the past and risk another Chernobyl, Fukushima, or Bhopal when it could be leapfrogging into the future?” asked Vivek Wadhwa, Director of Research, CERC, Pratt School of Engineering, Duke Universi-

Asked what else India can look forward to from warmer relations with US, Batra said “America’s ‘special relationship’ with Great Britain will in time be judged against America’s ‘special relationship’ with India.” “India will be the secret ingredient to a strong and durable American Dream for all,” he said adding, “As an Indian-American, it doesn’t get any better.” Asked if he feared that the Republicans may try to undo what Obama has wrought in India-US relations, Batra noted that Republicans too had “worked hard and took political risks to get where we were” before the Devyani Khobragade affair. “All Indians and all Americans have a legitimate right to claim ownership of this ObamaModi Hugs-success,” he said.

The rate at which solar and other clean technologies are progressing, by the time the first nuclear plant is operational in India, it will be far more expensive than the alternatives, he said. “The White House is claiming victory for a breakthrough in the impasse with India over nuclear energy,” Wadhwa wrote suggesting “This is hardly a victory for the United States or for India.”

White House proposal by US President Barack Obama to increase spending for NASA has been welcomed by the US space agency that will boost its chances to reach Mars and other deep space missions. The $18.5 billion budget request for the fiscal year 2016 a $500 million boost over the 2015 budget - includes funding for developing a mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa, and the agency’s asteroid redirect mission (ARM), NASA chief Charles Bolden said during an address at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. “NASA is firmly on a journey to Mars. Make no mistake, this journey will help guide and define our generation,” Bolden said. The Orion spacecraft programme — designed to bring humans to deep-space destinations like Mars — and Space Launch System (SLS) mega-rocket are funded under the budget request, Space.com reported. Orion is expected to receive about $1.1 billion for 2016, with the SLS receiving about $1.35 billion. If the budget request are finalized, NASA could end the longrunning and aging Opportunity rover’s mission on Mars next year.

DELHI MAY GO TO AAP: SURVEY The Aam Aadmi Party may get highest number of seats in Delhi assembly elections, find surveys IANS, NEW DELHI

Keep nation’s unity integrated: Modi on ‘immigrant’ goof-up NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has defended the party over the Vision Document goof-up calling northeastern people “immigrants” and said the issue was being raked up for political benefits. “Attempts are being made to provoke people from northeast... a mistake was made and the party accepted it,” Modi said addressing a BJP election rally in Ambedkar Nagar of Delhi. "No one should play with the unity of of the country for political benefits," the prime minister said. The comments came as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)called its Vision Document reference to northeastern people in Delhi as "immigrants" an "inadvertent mistake" and regretted it. "Due to an inadvertent mistake the word immigrant was used in the Vision Document. The party regrets this," Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said her e. "The word immigrant was used in the heading, but the paragraph ahead used the word migrant," he said at a press conference.

ith just a few days left for the Delhi assembly elections, several surveys have projected the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) getting the highest number of seats. According the TG-CICERO opinion poll, AAP will get between 38- 46 seats and the BJP between 19-25 seats in the 70-member house. The Congress would get between three and seven seats while the other parties would get between zero to two seats, the poll said. It said the AAP would get over 43 percent of the votes, the BJP over 35 percent of votes, the Congress 13 percent, down by over 11 percent votes, and the others eight percent votes, a slide of nearly four percent votes. According to the India Today Group-Cicero poll, over 44 percent respondents feel AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal is best suited to be chief minister, while 35 percent think so of BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi and just 12 percent hold Congress’ Ajay Maken best suited for the post. AAP’s foreign funding: PIL filed for CBI probe NEW DELHI: A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed this week in the Delhi High Court to seek a CBI probe into foreign funds the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received in the past and now in violation of law. The plea came days after AAP Volunteer Action Manch (AVAM), a group of volunteers who broke away from the AAP in August last year, alleged that the party received Rs.2 crore in four equal installments from the companies registered in Delhi slums and having the same set of directors. The group has claimed that on April 5, 2014, four bogus companies made donations of Rs.50 lakh each through cheques to AAP at midnight. It alleged the companies made those donations despite not having earned profits.

ahead of the BJP in both vote share and number of seats in the 70member house. According to the survey AAP will get 34 seats as against the BJP’s 32. The Delhi elections are on February 7 and results would be out on February 10.

AAP shameless, says Narendra Modi NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the AAP of “shamelessness” for allegedly accepting dubious election funds, while AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal challenged the government to arrest him if he was indeed guilty. The fuel to the high-decibel attack against the AAP came after the AAP Volunteer Action Manch (AVAM), a breakaway group of the AAP, raised questions about the funding of the Kejriwal-led party. The AVAM, which had alleged that the AAP received Rs.2 crore funding from shell companies, addressed a press conference here again this week. It alleged that the AAP had received donations from “fraud” companies. Modi, addressing an election rally in Rohini in north Delhi, said the AAP was till now talking about who was more corrupt — the Congress or the BJP. However, Kejriwal, addressing a rally in Trilokpuri in east Delhi, dared the government to arrest him if he was indeed guilty of money laundering.

s Delhi inches closer to the assembly elections, the three main parties in the fray — the AAP, the Congress and the BJP — have laid out elaborate action plans, promising a slew of development measures for the national capital. THE CONGRESS: The Congress manifesto is a comprehensive vision that speaks about: v Regularising unauthorised colonies that could not attain legal status during the first round of regularisation by the previous Congress government. v Increasing pension amount to Rs.2,000 per month for all,

including widows and handicapped. v Constructing as many as 25,000 flats for the economically weaker section. v Monitoring public transport and residential colonies through CCTV cameras and scaling up the number of women in the police force to ensure safety of women in the city. v Making public transport Wi-Fi enabled. v Charging Rs.1.50 per unit up to 200 units of electricity consumption, and 50 percent subsidy for those who consume over that limit. The total subsidy, all put together, would be Rs.1600 crore.

THE AAM AADMI PARTY (AAP) manifesto spells out its commitment as: v Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill: Legislate the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill to ensure a time-bound investigation in matters of corruption. v Full statehood for Delhi: Push for full statehood for the national capital. This will ensure that institutions such as the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Police will be accountable to the elected government of Delhi. This way land will be made available for the common man. v Electricity bills: Slash electricity bills by half and adopt measure

to provide relief from rising power bills by generate cheaper electricity. v Free lifeline water: Ensure free lifeline water of up to 20,000 litres to every household per month through a Delhi Jal Board’s metered water connection. THE BJP’S Vision Document lays out a development framework the party seeks to follow with special emphasis on over 35 areas, including nine that merit immediate focus. Issues concerning women’s safety, youth affairs, electricity and water, housing, transport as well as health and hygiene top the BJP’s list of immediate priorities.

They also made him sign a statement, admitting that he owed them Bahraini Dinar 400, before stealing his wallet, Gulf Daily News reported.

lar bhajan is unique in the sense that it remains so current in its moral underpinnings about what

between 1414 and 1481, was in a sense unwitting figure in India’s great Bhakti Movement, which flourished organically throughout the country during medieval times between 800 and 1700 CE. In the tradition of the figures of the Bhakti Movement of the time, Mehta was also a pioneering social

reformer who used the power of his poetry to break down rigid caste and class barriers. “Vaishnav Jan To, which is easily among the most widely sung songs in the world, was typical of Mehta’s deceptively simple but profound worldview. Each verse essentially defines what kind of moral standards should drive humans. I would argue that the bhajan in many ways shaped Gandhi’s larger socio-cultural view that was at the heart of the country’s freedom movement. It is any poet’s envy that a creation not only lasts centuries but continues to retain its modernity,” Chhaya says. Although “Gandhi’s Song” is pegged on “Vaishnav Jan To” because of its global recognition, the documentary will dwell on Mehta as a poet, reformer and figure who defied constricting social norms and worked all his life to establish societal equity among people divided by castes.

hief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched an ambitious “Friends of Madhya Pradesh” programme in New York on February 1 with a call to them and Americans to pour their talents, investments and philanthropy into his state’s development. He marked the launch by joining four US members of Congress and other dignitaries in placing their hands on a globe which lit up on the stage a projection of the portal site for the program, friendsofmp.com. The program aims to create a pool of talent and of those

interested in helping the state, he said. The event, modeled after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception in New York last September, featured dance programmes, films about the state’s economic development programs and the Ujjain Kumbh Mela and a procession of drums and banners leading the dignitaries into the Avery Fisher Hall. About 3,000 people filled the venue, which is the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the Lincoln Center. Kidney transplant of these patients will ease the pressure on the cash-strapped NHS. Sibby Thomas, 47, a volunteer of the organization Upahaar, which means gift and who hails from Kerala, has already undergone an operation to give one of his kidneys to ailing Risa Mol, 15. Father Davis was present at London’s Guy’s Hospital

throughout the five-hour operation to support Sibby and his family. Francis Mathew, president of the UK Malayalee Association (UKMA), will join the donor list very soon. Another prominent Kerala organization, Federation of British Malayalees (FOBMA), is also offering their support. The father is prompting more organizations and individuals to join the list. Won’t forgive, says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the world condemns execution IANS, TOKYO

T

he Islamic State (IS) militants claimed in a video to have executed a second Japanese hostage, according to media reports this week. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the purported killing as “a despicable terrorist act” and vowed to “never forgive” the radical group. The IS claimed in a one-minute video clip to have beheaded freelance journalist and film-maker Kenji Goto, 47, after his compatriot Haruna Yukawa was killed only a few days back. Goto was known to have gone to Syria in October to secure Yukawa’s release. After the video was posted online, Abe told reporters that he

was utterly “outraged by the despicable terrorist act”, adding that he would never yield to terrorists. “I am infuriated by these inhumane and despicable acts of terrorism, and resolutely condemn these impermissible and outrageous acts. I will never forgive these terrorists. I will work with the international community to hold them responsible for their deplorable acts,” he said in a statement posted on Japan’s foreign ministry website. Prime Minister Abe said Japan will never give in to terrorism. “We will further expand our humanitarian assistance in the Middle East in areas such as food and medical care. Japan will steadfastly fulfill its responsibility in the international community combating terrorism,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, under international pressure to curb terrorism and terrorist activities based on its territory, will conduct the trial of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, on day-to-day basis, local media reported this week. The Islamabad High Court, whose earlier order for conditional release of Lakhvi raised the hackles of India, said that the hearing in the trial would be held on daily basis, the Dawn reported. The court’s ruling came on a request from prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar, who said: “This case is crucial. The world’s eyes are on this case. Therefore, it should be heard daily by IHC.” The hearing in the case will commence Friday. The trial, being conducted by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has seen much flip-flop in recent months. Last year Dec 29, the Islamabad High Court ordered conditional release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, drawing strong protests from India, which summoned the Pakistani envoy to “convey concern” over the development. India has relentlessly sought Lakhvi since the November 2008 attacks killed 166 persons, including several foreigners, in Mumbai, causing international uproar and a diplomatic storm.

Shock and grief struck the people in Japan Sunday as the media reported the execution Goto by IS. “Kenji has died, and my heart is broken,” said Junko Ishido, the mother of slain journalist. “I’m just speechless. It is my only hope that we can carry on with Kenji’s mission to save the children from war and poverty,” The Guardian quoted her as saying. Newspapers in Japan issued special editions bringing news of Goto’s death. “Goto was a hugely respected journalist for his extensive experience, a man who covered children caught up in conflict, and told the stories of ordinary people and human rights problems. For all who knew him, it’s a huge loss,” the Japan Times quoted Tina Carr, director of the Rory Peck Trust, as saying.

ordan executed two convicted jihadis in retaliation for the killing of one of its air force pilots by the Islamic State (IS) militants, BBC reported. The executed terrorists included Sajida al-Rishawi, a woman, whose release the IS had demanded as a condition for releasing Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh. Al Qaeda operative Ziyad Karboli was also hanged, the report added. Jordan was reportedly considering to release Al-Rishawi, who was sentenced to death for her role in a failed attack in Amman in 2005, to secure the release of its pilot. Jordan vowed an “earth-shattering” response after IS posted an online video apparently showing

the pilot’s execution. Describing the pilot as “martyr”, Mamdouh al-Ameri, a spokesman for the Jordanian armed forces,

said: “His blood will not be shed in vain. Our punishment and revenge will be as huge as the loss of the Jordanians.”

UNITED NATIONS: UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of a Jordanian pilot held captive by the Islamic State (IS), saying the terrorist organization has “no regard for human life”, Xinhua reported. In a note to the media, Ban said he shares the sorrow of the family and loved ones of Moaz al-Kasasbeh, the pilot of the Jordanian Royal Air Force, and stands in solidarity with the people of Jordan in denouncing this “appalling” act. Ban also urged all government of all countries across the world to strengthen their efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism.

enying suggestions that the US-India partnership was intended as a counterweight to China, a senior US official said its sole intent was “to build India up” working on common core values. “I would fundamentally point to the fact that this is a US-India effort and it’s not necessarily to counterweight anyone,” Phil Reiner, White House’s senior director for South Asian Affairs, told foreign media at a round-table on Obama’s India trip. “I don’t think either the US or India has an interest in any kind of confrontation or much less any sort

of intent to contain China” he said. “That’s not the intent,” Reiner said. “The intent here is to work together... to work off of the core values that we have to build India up.” “And this is something that we’re very much interested in doing, and it’s in both of our interests to do so,” he said. “I would not necessarily put that forward, though, as a counterweight to China per se.” Both US and India, Reiner said, were “very much interested in working off of those fundamental values and establishing systems that basically work off of established rules and norms in the international sphere to avoid conflict, to avoid any situation where there may be perceived bullying.”

The US President Barack Obama in India.

Discounting a New York Times report that the first issue that Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed as soon as they met was China, he said “there was many things that we spoke about.”

“Coming in the door, I think the primary thing that was talked about was the fact that we had just reached agreement on these two seminal documents - on the Delhi declaration and on the joint strategic vision,” Reiner said.

ndian tennis star Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis beat the French-Canadian team of Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor in straight sets to clinch the Australian Open mixed doubles crown here. Paes, contesting his 25th season on the ATP World Tour, and Hingis defeated defending champions Mladenovic and Nestor 6-4, 6-3 in the final that lasted an hour and two minutes. Paes has now won 15 Grand

Slam championship titles - eight men’s doubles and seven mixed doubles. It was his third mixed doubles triumph at Melbourne Park, having also won in 2003 (with Martina Navratilova) and 2010 (with Cara Black). “It’s a great honor to keep coming back to Australia,” said 41-yearold Paes. “There are a few people who got us together. All you guys back home, who put us together to win our first Grand Slam, thank you.” In the first set, Paes and Hingis took a 3-0 lead, but Nestor and Mladenovic’s I-formation caused

President, PM congratulate Paes NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian tennis icon Leander Paes for winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title in Melbourne, partnering Swiss veteran Martina Hingis. “Leander Paes continues to make us proud! I congratulate him on the mixed doubles win with Martina Hingis at the Australian Open,” Modi tweeted. Echoing the same sentiment, Mukherjee tweeted: “Congratulations to Leander Paes on the Mixed Doubles win at the Australian Open.” The 41-year-old Paes has now won 15 Grand Slam titles.

ate last week, three things kept Indian sport in focus. The cricket team failed to make the tri-series final to end a dreadful tour of Australia, a Dutchman has been named the new national hockey coach and Leander Paes partnered another Martina (Hingis) to win his seventh Grand Slam title in mixed doubles to add to his eight in the men’s doubles. If nothing appears beyond Paes even at 41, nothing seems to be going right for the cricket team with the World Cup less than two weeks away. The appointment of Paul van Ass, 54, as chief coach of the hockey team is a bolt from the blue with no media leaks or speculation ahead of the appointment. Paes is so exciting to watch on a tennis court giving expression to his passion for the game. He has yet again proved that he can win a major with any partner, Hingis this time in Melbourne. years ago he had played with the other Martina, the legendary Navratilova, who even waited for him to return to court after a lifethreatening parasitic infection. Paes played with South African Raven Klassen at the Australian Open, his 99th partner in the men’s

doubles, and Hingis was the 23rd in the mixed - an amazing record for a doubles specialist, who has been around for over a quarter of a century, playing over 40 weeks each year. The beauty is in the tennis philosophy of Paes and Hingis. He was confident that he could do

well with her where as the Hingis thought he would be better off playing with another circuit regular. Maybe, that made both of them to put in that extra bit of effort as there was little doubt about their exceptional skills. How true is the strengths and weaknesses theory Paes has spoken of. Only two great exponents could plan it out so well to win without losing a set. That itself a remarkable thing in modern day doubles. The Indian cricket team can get inspired by Paes’s zeal and determination. They need not worry too much about some people writing their chances of defending the World Cup off after their disastrous tour Down Under. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his players know that World Cup is a totally different format and they can bounce back with the rub of the green going their way. Though the Indians would have liked a better preparation for the big event, they should be confident

problems and they soon levelled the scoreline. At 4-5, a backhand drive volley error by Mladenovic gave Paes and Hingis a set point opportunity on Nestor’s serve. He struck a double fault to end the 29-minute first set. Nestor and Mladenovic broke Hingis for a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Mladenovic was broken in the next game. Net errors by Nestor paved the way to hand Paes and Hingis a 4-2 lead, but Nestor regained his rhythm on return of serve to break Hingis again. Mladenovic was broken in the eighth game and Hingis went on to seal victory with a smash winner. Paes and Hingis converted five of their seven break point opportunities, hitting 19 winners and committing just 11 unforced errors for victory on Rod Laver Arena. Former World No.1 Hingis also won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in 2006 (with Mahesh Bhupathi). “(We were) probably just maybe a little less aggressive on some second serves to Hingis,” said Nestor. “Too many double-faults. I was maybe a little too aggressive with the second serve.” Nestor said, “They played better for sure. Even when I thought I was serving okay, they were still making a lot of balls. They played well.”

enough taking heart from their status as the No.2 team in the rankings of the One-Day Internationals. They have a problem with the top order batting and may not be sure of their bowling composition what with the injuries to some of their key bowlers. In fact, their in-form opener Rohit Sharma did not play the last three games nursing a hamstring. Likewise pacer Ishant Sharma did not bowl flat out even in the nets but stayed with the team for over a month. Now it is being said he may not be fit for the tournament itself. Ravindra Jadeja is another bowler who is an iffy, though he bowled 9.5 overs when the day’s best bowler Stuart Binny bowled only eight. Obviously Dhoni was putting Jadeja through the ringer to test his fitness than worry about winning the match which they could have with a little imagination. Let the team settle their fitness problems before discussing their chances of making the semi-finals. Coming to the hockey development, none of the coaches in recent years left with any goodwill, some of them have literally been hounded out.

Kerala CM says no to Mohanlal’s refund Superstar Mohanlal was paid for his musical band’s performance at the 35th National Games IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

P

utting an end to all speculations, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said this week the state government has no moral right to accept the money that they gave to superstar Mohanlal. Mohanlal was paid for his musical band’s performance at the opening ceremony of the 35th National Games, held here last week. “There is an agreement that the government has entered into with Mohanlal for the conduct of his programme. Even if he says that he will return the money, the Kerala government has no moral right to take back the money,” said Chandy. Since the conduct of the event, which incidentally was the debut

According to the health department, 122 samples were tested for H1N1 virus and out of them, 39 were found positive. The authorities screened 1,976 samples since Jan 1 and out of them, 668 were found positive. The health department, however, continues to maintain that the intensity of swine flu is decreasing as the number of cases are showing declining trend. The bulletin issued by the department Tuesday said the five percent fatality rate or the number of deaths out of positive cases in Telangana is one of the lowest in the country. The fatality rate in Rajasthan is 20 percent, Gujarat 12 percent and Delhi one percent. Officials said enough stocks of medicines have been made available at all teaching, district and area hospitals. performance of Mohanlal’s newlyformed musical band Lalisom, both the superstar and the government have come in for much criticism over the poor quality of the programme. Snubbed by a massive social media outcry targeting Mohanlal, the film star went into a shell and, in an email to Kerala Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, said he will return the `1.63 crore that he had taken towards expenses incurred — he pointed out that he did not charge any fee for his appearance. Sources close to the actor have pointed out that Wednesday morning, he has, in a speed post mailed a draft of Rs.1.63 crore to the state government, thereby closing the lid over the controversy. Chandy, meanwhile, had to face a

barrage of questions on the rationale behind the government defending Mohanlal’s inferior quality program. “I spoke to him when we fixed his program and he had made it very clear that he had very little time. Now after all what has happened, we feel sad that a great artiste like Mohanlal had to face all this. At no cost we will accept the money that he said he will return,” said Chandy. Chandy also observed that some vested interests have been trying for some time to play foul by working against the conduct of the National Games. “The closing ceremony also will be conducted as planned and, mind you, the budget for each program was fixed way back in 2011,” the Kerala chief minister said.

“As Togadia is habitually and ideologically inclined to give provocative and inflammatory speeches, such activities will have grave consequences and are likely to cause breach of peace, danger to human life and disturb public tranquility and communal harmony in the city,” Reddi observed. Law-enforcing agencies in many states, including Karnataka have registered 19 criminal cases against Togadia for allegedly making inflammatory statements and disrespecting the constitution in the recent past. maan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, the sons of the sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, will give a concert at the New York's Symphony Space on February 10. They will be accompanied by the renowned violinist Elmira Darvarova, former concertmaster at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the table virtuoso Salar Nader. Amaan, the eldest son of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, belongs to the seventh generation in an unbroken chain of the Senia Bangash School. He was initiated by his father into the art of sarod playing and gave his first public performance at age of eight. Amaan has performed at numerous venues in India and around the world.

In 2005, Amaan composed music for the film 'American Daylight' which was directed by Academy Award winner Rodger Christian. In the same year, he also collaborated with the Derek Trucks Band at the Savannah Music Festival in

Georgia and featured with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in Real World Record's album called ‘Moksha’. Ayaan, the younger son, also gave his solo debut when he was eight years old and has been performing concerts in India and abroad.

Sonam never wanted to use father’s name MUMBAI: It’s always thought that Bollywood’s star children have it easy, but actress Sonam Kapoor says that at the very beginning of her film career, she had decided not to make the most of her father Anil Kapoor’s popularity. “When I joined the film industry, I became very defensive because people were so mean. They were like, ‘She is Anil’s daughter and she will get things very easily’. So I said, ‘I am never going to use my dad for anything’,” Sonam, who forayed into acting with “Saawariya”, said. From there on, Sonam says “I did

‘Rahasya’ - gripping,

everything on my own”. “I called the directors on my own. I never called my dad for help. My dad

said to me, ‘I have worked very hard for 50 years so that my children can have a better life. Why aren’t you using it?’. “He says, ‘I have done this for you guys, so use it’. But I was like, ‘I can do it on my own’. But no matter how much I did, people still say it’s because of my dad,” added the actress, who went on to feature in movies like “Raanjhanaa” and “Khoobsurat”. Now Sonam’s brother Harshvardhan is set to make his film debut via Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s “Mirziya”.

alf of the star-rating extra for the sheer abundance of acting talent that Manish Gupta’s stylish confidently-shot whodunit throws forward, with Kay Kay Menon helming the murder mystery as an walnut-chomping CBI officer on the trail of the murder of a young girl, who is killed in her swanky home while her doctor-father was drunk in the next room. No no no...don’t go away! This is not the tragic Arushi Talwar murder revisited and sensationalized on celluloid. Director Manish Gupta, who has earlier made a strong but crude film on ragging, “Hostel”, keeps the proceedings on an even keel. Taking the Talwar tragedy as a take-off point, writer-director Gupta has woven an intricate whodunit with enough twists and turns to keep us guessing about the murderer’s identity till the very end. The killer’s identity, when revealed, is not entirely unexpected but nonetheless shocking and more importantly, convincing. Whodunits in Bollywood frequently flounder in their endgame. Not “Rahasya”. Gupta keeps the narrative going in a steady flow and at a perky pace. The shots are cut deftly. Editor Suresh Pai gives

the wide array of characters ample room to breathe but never allows them to overstay their welcome. This suspense here largely depends on the efficacy of the actors. And here’s where “Rahasya” really scores. Kay Kay Menon as the wry investigative officer fighting off his wife’s persistent demands to get corrupt, brings a tremendous engagingness to his character. His character Sunil Paraskar is a man who survives the hardships of a thankless job by cracking cruel jokes about himself and others. Particularly grating on the nervous system is that wonderful actress Ashwini Kalsekar, who as the dead girl’s nanny, whines, sobs, moans and wails almost throughout the film. This is a dark, desperate, sinister, gutsy and gripping thriller.

Red carpet moment for Nimrat...

T

he Lunchbox actor Nimrat Kaur is ecstatic about having attended the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in Los Angeles and living her “favorite dream” of rubbing shoulders with some of her biggest childhood idols. “It was like a dream,” Nimrat said. “I was standing on the same carpet as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Ethan Hawke. It was as if I had walked into my favorite dream.” Nimrat says she was too shy to speak to anyone, except Ethan Hawke. “When I saw him on the red carpet, I had to tell him that Great Expectations was one of my favorite films. I blurted it out nervously. He was very nice to me. But to go and speak to Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts was beyond me,” she said. She admits The Lunchbox and now her stint on the American series Homeland have brought her global recognition. Call her the female Irrfan Khan, and she says: “That’s a very high compliment indeed. To be bracketed with someone who has done Indian cinema proud all over the world is very gratifying”.

‘The Dirty Politics’ release postponed to Holi

M

allika Sherawat-starrer "The Dirty Politics", which was earlier slated to release on February 13, will now hit the screens on March 6, which happens to be Holi. The reason behind the delay is to avoid a clash with other films, and to record one more song. The film's director K.C. Bokadia told IANS: “Earlier my film was supposed to release on Feb 13, but since my song 'Ghaghra' is doing really well, we have decided to record one more song for this film. So, Mallika will be shooting for this song on February 13, 14 and 15.” Bokadia says March 6 gives them a "good window" due to the festival of Holi, which also falls on the same day.

Bipasha, who has completed over a decade in the Hindi film industry, is one of the few actresses among her contemporaries who is busy even now. How does she review her career? “I have done over 60 films and in the last six years, I have done one film at a time. I would like to lead my life ... that is my priority,” Bipasha told IANS. “I happen to be in a demanding profession, but work comes second. Right from the beginning, I have never planned anything while doing films... I have realised that I love acting. I look forward to life. I don’t look back. I am a very unpredictable person,” she added. Bipasha was last seen in the horror film Alone, which hit the screens on January 16 this year.

Nualgi is bent on eliminating water pollution

AN DIEGO (CA) -- After a successful launch earlier this year of nanotech solutions to manage out-of-control algae in aquariums and ponds, Nualgi Nanobiotech founder Sampath Kumar has announced his intention to eliminate water pollution in America’s lakes, rivers, bays, and oceans. Following a summer filled with toxic algae blooms across the country, Kumar is seeking approval to control large-scale toxic algae in the United States utilizing Nualgi’s patented formula. Nualgi’s formula is certified non-toxic by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research and has successfully been used in large lakes and rivers in India for over ten years. However, adoption in the US has been limited to private buyers of their Nualgi AquariumTM & Nualgi Ponds TM products due to regulatory approval procedures.

Nualgi founder Sampath Kumar

“When toxic algae in Lake Erie caused a ban on tap water this summer, I tried to donate the necessary Nualgi to treat the lake, but the lake managers weren’t permitted to use our product, so the lake went untreated and 500,000 residents of Toledo, Ohio, were unable to access tap water,” Kumar stated in a

press release. While the CEO states that their water treatment can “easily control large-scale algae blooms,” in order to gain government approval Nualgi needs an independent university study based in the US. Taking the first major step towards getting the US to approve Nualgi’s use in fighting the water pollution in our lakes, rivers, bays, and oceans, Nualgi has secured facilities and a team of research scientists from the Mississippi State University (MSU) to perform a yearlong study. In order to help fund the university research study, they launched a Kickstarter campaign that ran for from November 24 to December 8. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness as well as generate $100,000 to fund the doubleblind research study at the MSU. Kumar is excited to begin this study, claiming, “With this research study, we can get on with our real mission – cleaning up the world’s waterways.”

TLANTA, GA -- A worker with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was arrested at HartsfieldJackson International Airport last week for having a gun in a carry-on bag. It has been a turbulent last month for the airport, not with the planes, but with the security to keep them safe. The latest incident happened on January 14 on a flight from Atlanta to New York, when an FAA employee was caught with a weapon in his carry-on bag. The incident comes just weeks after a major gun smuggling ring was broken up in Atlanta involving past and present airline workers. Investigators said they were running guns from Atlanta to New York City. According to the Transportation Security Administration, the FAA would stand down the program while it conducted improved training for all its inspectors. “The agency will also require inspectors to sign a new agreement that details each inspector’s responsibility, and clearly states that any infraction related to a weapon will result in an immediate and permanent suspension of privileges and possible further disciplinary action.”

Many Indian channels off from Chitram TV app

BY A STAFF WRITER

n a major breakthrough, sending a strong message to organised pirates of content in the digital space, certain members of Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) have succeeded in their efforts to remove their channels from recently launched android and ios applications of ‘Chitram TV’ on Google and Apple play stores. Chitram TV is an IPTV/OTT service provider which has been illegally broadcasting the signals of the Indian origin channels Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom and certain other regional Indian television networks which are members of IBF) for quite some time. Recently Chitram TV launched its mobile application on android and ios devices in an attempt to widen its distribution and reach. The broadcasters took up the issue of Chitram’s illegal broadcast and Apple and Google have now removed these channels from their ios and Android platforms.

This is a major victory for the members of IBF in their fight against online piracy. These Indian broadcasters, who have joined hands to collectively fight digital piracy, are considering initiating legal proceedings against Chitram TV and other pirate platforms in multiple jurisdictions outside. None of the members of IBF (viz. Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom) has authorised Chitram TV to carry their channels on any media platform let alone digital. IBF understands that Chitram TV continues to

distribute the Indian channels via IPTV/OTT particularly outside India. IBF members have buckled up to fight the pirates like Chitram TV to preserve the integrity of their channels and content. With the rapid advent of technology enabling the dissemination of content across digital platforms, there are enormous revenue opportunities for broadcasters and other content owners. The Indian channels which are available in more than 100 countries around the world are extremely popular amongst the South Asian diaspora. All of these channels have launched their own digital platforms and mobile apps but piracy has been a major stumbling block in revenue monetisation. Isolated efforts of the broadcasters could have achieved little. Now that the Indian broadcasters stand united in their fight against digital piracy, their efforts will provide a greater impetus in the global effort to combat digital piracy.

Leaders of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview immediately held a meeting to talk about ways to protect the campus, which includes the mosque, a community center, a youth center and three schools. Those who pray at the mosque are unhappy about the threats since Muslims in the area have enjoyed a healthy relationship with the surrounding community. “What’s happened in France is against our religion and against our Islamic teaching. Brown’s father is a member of the church. According to ATF, 26 fires were set the night of the grand jury’s decision.

Indian faces 10-yr jail term for healthcare fraud BY A STAFF WRITER

M

ARYLAND -- A Maryland man was sentenced last week to 13 months in prison for a scheme to defraud Medicaid, Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program by submitting false claims for prescription refills. Jigar Patel, 27, of Columbia, was also ordered to be under three years of supervised release and to pay restitution of $102,066.25. An Indian citizen and a licensed pharmacist in India, Patel was working in the United States under an H1-B visa. He was hired as a pharmacy technician in 2010, by Reddy Vijay Annappareddy, owner of Pharmacare, LLC, who agreed to sponsor his work permit. Annappareddy, 46, of Fallston, Maryland, was convicted on December 15 after a fiveweek trial, on charges of healthcare fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with the scheme. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for healthcare fraud and a mandatory minimum of two years in prison, consecutive to any other sentence imposed, for aggravated identity theft, plus a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced on March 11. Additionally, Vipinkumar Patel, 31, of Edgewood, Maryland; Ram Guruvareddy, 59, of Belcamp, Maryland; and Venkata Srinivas Mannava, 45, of Hyattsville, Maryland, pled guilty to their roles in the scheme, and testified at the trial to their knowledge of the scheme. Patel admitted that he billed insurance programs for prescription refills when the pharmacy customers had not requested the

refill. As soon as a prescription was eligible for refill, Patel would cause a false claim to be electronically submitted to a health care benefit program. These refills were often billed and filled without the customer’s knowledge, a FBI press release said. The medications targeted for automatic refills were typically expensive HIV and cancer medications used by very ill customers. The claims for payment were not reversed when the customers did not receive the medications, which the customers had not requested in the first place. Patel also knew that medications filled but not delivered to the customer–usually because the customer had not requested the refill–were placed back on the shelves at the pharmacy to be re-used to fill other prescriptions. In August 2013, a federal search warrant was executed at a then vacant home that was used by Annappareddy to house Pharmacare employees, and in which Patel previously resided. During the search, federal agents recovered undelivered medications worth approximately $87,749.48, as well as binders of alphabetically arranged signature logs which purported to confirm the delivery of medication to Pharmacare customers. Many of the undelivered medications found at the home were actually billed and filled by Jigar Patel in his capacity as pharmacy technician. Patel however did not receive the profits from the fraud scheme directly, but was able to keep his job at Pharmacare and lawfully remain in the US on an H1-B visa.

Madison woman loses $1,600 in Facebook scam

BY A STAFF WRITER

M

ADISON, WI -- A Madison woman has been left heartbroken and out of $1,600 after a Facebook scam. The police say that after meeting and falling in love with a man she had met over the social network, the victim wired money for an engagement ring. The scammer allegedly told the woman that she had become part of a money-laundering scheme, and she would be exposed to the authorities if she didn’t send more money. The woman contacted the Madison Police Department about “Matt Campbell”, the man she had grown to love and trust in recent months. The police said they would continue to educate the community about the dangers of wiring money to people they haven’t met, as well as to other countries.

Final push by Asian Health Coalition for health insurance BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO, IL -- With less than 3 weeks remaining, navigators and in-person counselors from the Asian Health Coalition and its community partners are making the final push to bring the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to Asian American communities across Chicago. The Asian Health Coalition is targeting Chicago’s Muslim American communities along with community and faith-based partners from the Compassionate Care Network, Metropolitan Asian Family Services, and Hamdard Health and Human Services. “More than 750 individuals have been enrolled by navigators from these

organizations since open enrollment started back in October,” said Ranjana Paintal, project director for the Asian Health Coalition’s ACA program. “We want to take this time to remind all US citizens and lawfully present persons to apply for health insurance as there is still time. Even if individuals may not be eligible for coverage, they can still apply on behalf of other family members who are”, she further added. February 15 is the deadline to enroll in marketplace coverage. The ACA requires that most people have insurance coverage, or pay a fine. Starting this year, each individual and family’s health coverage status will also be reported on their tax filing.

“Our community partners have more than 15 events scheduled across Chicago’s Muslim communities in these final three weeks, with many of those informational meetings at faithbased centers, community associations, and local park districts,” Ms. Paintal said. “People need to have health coverage. You need to take care of yourself. It’s a great program, and I’ve seen people get health insurance who have never had it before.” she further added. Navigators from the par tnering organizations are available to help individuals and families shop for, compare and enroll in health coverage that is affordable and meets their budget.

Diabetes drug may up cancer risk in smokers

Musical training protects brain Older people who had musical training in their youth are faster in identifying speech sounds, says a new study IANS, TORONTO

M

usical training in the younger years can prevent the decay in the ability to comprehend speech in later life, new research has found. Among the different cognitive functions that can diminish with age is the ability to understand speech. “Musical activities are an engaging form of cognitive brain training and we are now seeing robust evidence of brain plasticity from musical training not just in younger brains, but in older brains too,” said Gavin Bidelman, who led the study

as a post-doctoral fellow at Rotman Research Institute (RRI) in Canada. Older adults who had musical training in their youth were 20 percent faster in identifying speech sounds than their non-musician peers on speech identification tests, a benefit that has already been observed in young people with musical training.

In this study, 20 adults, 10 musicians and 10 nonmusicians are asked to identify sounds.

In this study, 20 healthy older adults (aged 55-75) - 10 musicians and 10 non-musicians - put on headphones in a controlled lab setting and were asked to identify random speech sounds. During the testing cycles, researchers recorded the neural activity of each participant using electroencephalography (EEG). Starting formal lessons on a musical instrument prior to age 14 and continuing intense training for up to a decade appears to enhance key areas in the brain that support speech recognition. The findings were published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

IANS, NEW YORK

D

epending on their smoking history, a drug may have contrary effects on people suffering from diabetes - reducing lung cancer risk among nonsmokers and increasing the risk among smokers. The study involved 47,351 diabetic patients (54 percent men), 40 years or older, who completed a health-related survey between 1994 and 1996. During 15 years of followup, 747 patients were diagnosed with lung cancer. Metformin use was not associated with lower lung cancer

risk overall; however, the risk was 43 percent lower among diabetic patients who had never smoked, and the risk appeared to decrease with longer use. Metformin use for five or more years was associated with a 31 percent decrease in the risk

Our results suggest that risk might differ by smoking history, with metformin decreasing risk among nonsmokers and increasing risk among current smokers for adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer diagnosed in nonsmokers, and an 82 percent increase in the risk for smallcell carcinoma, a type of lung cancer often diagnosed in smokers. The study appeared in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

Your week ahead... Aries Aries, while it is tempting to do something concrete about your friend, or the wider group, the communication is lacking, and the plans may change. Hope for some good news this weekend.

Taurus Taurus, the sign of Aquarius rules your ambition, mission and position and this week the Sun is illuminating those issues for you, joined by Mercury, the planet of communication and information.

Gemini Gemini, your ruler Mercury is still out of phase in an area of your horoscope set aside for travel, foreign relations, education, publishing and the internet. Travel in particular should be insured for obvious reasons.

Cancer Cancer, your ruler the Moon is part of the Full Stone Moon story on Tuesday 3rd February, which makes a decision about your money, apartment, business, house, charity or possessions unavoidable.

Leo It looks as though your former, current or potential partner is at the heart of matters this week. A flexible attitude will help you far more than a rigid expectation of a particular outcome.

Virgo Virgo, your sign is associated with the Sixth House in astrology, which describes the minutiae of your daily routine; your attitude towards work, duty and service; the relationship you have with your body.

(February 2-8) Libra Libra, continue to work towards the useful reshaping of your social life, friendships and group concerns this week, as the bigger picture is very big indeed and no effort is wasted.

Scorpio It may be that you need to prove yourself in an entirely different field, or accept that special recognition for all you did in 2013 and 2014 will eventually come your way – probably between April and August when Jupiter turns direct.

Sagittarius Your planet Jupiter clashes with the Sun on Feb 6, showing you what is possible with your travel, internet, foreign, education or publishing agenda. You will not really see the full flowering of the situation until April-August.

Capricorn This week appears to be solely about your bank account, business interests, house, apartment, possessions or philanthropy on the surface. Dig down a little deeper and you will hit questions about your value system.

Aquarius You may feel as if this week is D-Day for decisions about your title, profile, personal appearance or reputation. In actual fact, Mercury is out of phase in Aquarius, and what appears to be a clear space for discussion.

Pisces Pisces, this week is really about laying solid foundations for good rewards later on, and as Jupiter can only help reshape your lifestyle and daily workload in this way, every 12 years, perhaps the ultimate outcome is worth waiting for.

Mobile media use similarly replaces the amount of time spent engaging in direct humanhuman interaction,” said Jenny Radesky from the Boston University’s School of Medicine in the US. f you feel lazy to get up early in the morning to head for a jog, then sleep on! Research shows that morning is not the best time to exercise. The University of Birmingham researchers put 20 professional athletes, including several England hockey players, through a fitness test six times between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and No matter they found that the they did best on whether one is a the test around noon, reports dailymail.co.uk. lark or an owl, The British study found that no performance matter whether someone is a lark or doesn’t peak an owl, their performance doesn’t peak until noon until noon. Hence, rather than setting the alarm clock for 6 a.m. for jog before work, sleep in and go for a run later in the day. Birmingham University researcher Roland Brandstaetter said the results show the importance of listening to our body clock. “The body clock has such a big effect because virtually every cell in the body has a clock,” said Brandstaetter. “There are clocks in the brain and also in the organs, in the heart, in the liver, everything, and your physiology is controlled by these clocks. Everything happens on a day-night basis,” added the expert.

How gamblers are tempted to risk more LONDON: Triggering past winning memories can tempt people to gamble more, says a study. When reminded, or primed, of past winning outcomes as part of a controlled test, people were over 15 percent more likely to gamble and select the risky option, the findings showed. “Our memories play a very significant role when making certain decisions,” said Elliot Ludvig, from the University of Warwick in Britain. Subtle cues about winning outcomes are continuously apparent in casinos, from the whirring of slot machines to the millions of dollars of cash placed on the table for the final showdown in some poker tournaments, Ludvig noted.

where and children are using them more frequently at young ages, the authors questioned whether heavy device use during young childhood could interfere with development of empathy, social and problem solving skills that are typically obtained by exploring, unstructured play and interacting with peers. “These devices also may replace the hands-on activities important for the development of sensorimotor and visual-motor skills, which are important for the learning and application of math and science,” Radesky added.

Tweeting helps cope with sexism TORONTO: Publicly tweeting about sexism could improve wellbeing of women as it has the potential to let them express themselves in ways they feel like and can make a difference, says a study. “We know women can be badly affected by experiences of sexism and that responding publically can be stressful and risky,” said Mindi Foster from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. “However, this study demonstrates how tweeting publically has the potential to improve women’s wellbeing,” Foster added. A total of 93 female undergraduate

students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions regarding tweeting over a three-day period. Analysis showed that the group of women who tweeted publically displayed feelings of increased wellbeing by the third day.

Lonely people addicted to Television IANS, LONDON

inge-watching TV series such as “Game Of Thrones, “Breaking Bad” or “Broadchurch” is linked to depression and loneliness, says a recent study. People who suffer from low moods are more likely to spend hours or days viewing multiple episodes of their favorite programme online or on DVD. But by doing so they could neglect work, relationships and even their family, reports dailymail.co.uk. Researchers from the University of Texas in Austin said that bingewatching should no longer be considered a “harmless addiction” and that people should think twice

before settling in for a long session in front of the TV as it can affect your health.

They studied 316 people aged 18 to 29, asking how often they watched TV and how often they

experienced negative emotions such as loneliness and depression. The team’s full results will be presented at the Conference of the International Communication Association in Puerto Rico in May. However, lead researcher Yoon Hi Sung said that the findings should be a wake-up call. “Even though some people argue that binge-watching is a harmless addiction, findings from our study suggest that bingewatching should no longer be viewed this way,” she said. “Physical fatigue and problems such as obesity and other health problems are related to bingewatching and they are a cause for concern.”
