Don’t quit T Iran deal:UN tells Trump

BY A STAFF WRITER YRACUSE, NY – The Indian American head of a Chicago investment firm has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for conspiring to defraud a northern New York company out of $2.5 million. Debashis Ghosh also was ordered at his sentencing on April 23 in federal court in Syracuse to serve three years of supervised release. The 54-year-old Ghosh and 58-year-old Keith Eric Jergensen of Salt Lake City, Utah, were convicted in the October of wire fraud. The two were co-chief executive officers of Verdant Capital Group, which was hired by Plattsburgh-based Laurentian Aerospace Corp. to raise funds for construction of an airplane maintenance facility at the former Air Force base in Plattsburgh. Prosecutors said Jergensen and Ghosh asked Laurentian Aerospace to invest $2.5 million as seed money for the project, then spent it on their company’s expenses.

Keeping with tradition, not all cabinet members are expected to attend, although Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, made the cut. End ‘Dreamers:’ 7 states sue Trump The lawsuit calls on to ‘immediately rescind and cancel all DACA permits currently in existence in the country because they are unlawful’ IANS, WASHINGTON

S

even US states led by Texas has sued President Donald Trump’s administration in an attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the media reported. The lawsuit — joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia — asserted that the former Obama administration overstepped its authority when it created the program, which allows individuals who were brought to the US illegally as children to remain in the country, without congressional approval, The New York Times reported this week. “The executive unilaterally conferred lawful presence and work authorisation on otherwise unlawfully present aliens, and then the executive used that lawful-presence

‘dispensation’ to unilaterally confer US citizenship,” the lawsuit said. It calls on the US District Court for the Southern District of Texas to “immediately rescind and cancel all DACA permits currently in existence because they are unlaw-

ful”, or at a minimum to block the government “from issuing or renewing DACA permits in the future, effectively phasing out the program within two years”. Trump, too who wants to get rid of DACA, had ordered an end to

the programme in September and called on Congress to pass a replacement law, though it has not been done so. The repeal has been delayed by legal challenges. Last week, a federal judge in Washington ruled that the government must keep the program in place and start accepting applications again, unless it can provide a stronger legal justification for abandoning it. Federal judges have also ordered the administration to preserve DACA, reports The New York Times. “Three activist federal judges have blocked the federal government from canceling DACA,” Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas, whose office filed the lawsuit, said on Tuesday. “That means that unelected federal judges are forcing the Trump administration to leave an unlawful program in place indefinitely as legal challenges drag on.”

Steel, aluminium tariffs delayed for Canada, Mexico Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced he will again postpone imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and the EU for another 30 days, giving key allies a reprieve. The move gave key trading partners — and three of Washington’s four largest trading partners — time till June 1 to reach a deal with the Trump administration to avoid duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium exports sent to the US. The tariffs were slated to go into effect on Tuesday if Trump had not moved to extend the deadline, the US media reported. The administration has also reached preliminary agreements with three other countries that had initially been granted a temporary exemption — Argentina, Brazil and Australia — allowing them to escape the duties as details get finalized over the next 30 days.

Mueller ‘threatened Trump with subpoena’ amid Russia probe IANS, WASHINGTON

S

pecial counsel Robert Mueller warned Donald Trumps lawyers earlier this year that he would subpoena the President to appear before a grand jury if he refused to talk with his team as part of a probe into alleged Russian election meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the media reported. Mueller made the comment in response to the Trump legal team’s argument during a March meeting that the President wasn’t obligated to speak to federal investigators in the probe into Russian meddling, the Washington Post reported. “This isn’t some game,” Trump’s then-lawyer John Dowd reportedly replied. “You are screwing with the

work of the President of the US.” Dowd, who was leading the response to Mueller’s probe on Trump’s personal legal team, abruptly left the legal team in March.

According to the report, in the wake of the March meeting, Trump’s attorneys created a list of questions they believed that Mueller’s team would ask the President during an interview. Those questions were based off the topics that investigators told Trump’s lawyers they wanted to discuss with the President. The list of questions, which The New York Times first reported this week, included inquiries about the decisions to fire National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and FBI Director James Comey; whether Trump communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the campaign; and the President’s reported attempts to fire Mueller.

Trump warns he might involve himself in Russia probe Washington: US President Donald Trump said that “at some point (he) will have no choice” but to involve himself in the Russia probe, which he has called a “witch hunt”. “At some point I will have no choice but to use the powers granted to the Presidency and get involved!” said Trump in a Twitter post. The President insisted that the investigation is “A Rigged System They don’t want to turn over Documents to Congress. What are they afraid of? Why so much

redacting? Why such unequal ‘justice?’” in the same tweet. Several Republican lawmakers have criticized the Department of Justice, especially Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has refused to turn over documents to Congress that allegedly show antiTrump bias among some senior government officials, Efe reported. In another tweet, Trump called any investigation into possible obstruction of justice a “setup and trap”. —IANS

Trump not to apologize for Muslim ban IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has declined to apologize for his campaign-era proposal to ban all Muslims from the America, saying “there’s nothing to apologise for”, the media reported. “There’s no reason to apologize,” Trump said during a joint news conference alongside the Nigerian President when asked if he would apologise for his call during the 2016 presidential campaign for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the US. “There’s

nothing to apologize for. We have to have strong immigration laws to protect our country.” Trump’s refusal to apologize for or rescind his calls during the 2016 campaign for banning all Muslims from entering the United States has been repeatedly cited during court cases concerning the travel ban he put in place last year, reports CNN. Trump said he did not believe an apology would change the course of the legal case. He continued to slam current US immigration laws during the conference.

“Our immigration laws in this country are a total disaster. They’re laughed at all over the world.” He also derided the laws as “weak”, “pathetic” and “obsolete”. The latest iteration of Trump’s travel ban is now before the US Supreme Court, which last week heard oral arguments in the case. During the arguments, several justices pressed the government on Trump’s campaign promise to ban Muslims from the US. The US solicitor general, Noel Francisco, argued that campaign statements “should be out of bounds”.

India says yes to in-flight calling

Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu has assured early implementation of the Telecom Commission’s approval for offering in-flight connectivity within Indian airspace IANS, NEW DELHI

C

alling and texting from aircraft will soon become a reality as the Telecom Commission on Tuesday has approved in-flight connectivity, facilitating both voice and data calls and date surfing in Indian airspace, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said here. “Almost all recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on this have been accepted. We are expediting the process (to start) and within 3-4 months it should be ready. We will be operationalizing this decision immediately,” she told reporters after the meeting on Tuesday. She said there were only two exception to TRAI’s recommendations. The sector regulator said that foreign satellites and foreign gateways should also be permitted, “but there had been an earlier

committee of secretaries meeting that decided that it should be an Indian satellite or a Department of Space approved satellite and the gateway should be in India.” Sundararajan said: “We have to

create a separate category of licensee, called In-Flight Connectivity Provider. This will also be applicable for ships. Re 1 will be the token licence fee. It is applicable above 3,000 meters.”

She also said that the matter need not go to the Cabinet for approval. In addition, keeping in view that grievance redressal in the telecom sector, which has been a long pending demand, the panel approved the proposal of forming a Telecom Ombudsman. “We get 10 million grievances per quarter. A three tier mechanism has been proposed. First will be within the telecom service providers the first level of complaints can be lodged. Then if the consumer is not satisfied with the response, each TSP will set up an appellate mechanism within itself to which the person can complaint. After that if it does not work they can move to consumer grievance redressal forums,” Sundararajan said. “On top will be a Telecom Ombudsman created by TRAI,” she added.

court on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment mafia don Rajendra S. Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan (in picture) and eight others for the 2011 killing of veteran journalist J. Dey. Asked for his reaction, Chhota Rajan remarked: “Theek hai.” (It’s okay). “This is the first time the mafia don has been convicted for life imprisonment in a major case like murder,” Special Public Prosecutor

Pradep Gharat told IANS. Last year, he was sentenced to seven years in jail for passport forgery. The verdict was pronounced by Special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) Court judge Sameer Adkar after hours of heated arguments between Gharat and defense lawyers after the criminals were held guilty in the morning. The 56-year old Dey, a wellknown crime reporter of Mumbai, worked as Editor (Investigations) with Mid-Day when he was

gunned down on June 11, 2011 near his residence in suburban Powai. In an upcoming book, he had reportedly portrayed the mafia don as ‘Chindi’ (petty) criminal, which apparently irked Chhota Rajan. “Dey was a journalist. He represented the fourth pillar of Democracy. This case should be considered as the ‘rarest of rare’. A strong message needs to be sent out,” argued Gharat while demanding capital punishment for the accused.

Among other important decisions, the panel also approved the decision on internet telephony. “It will be operationalizing it immediately. We expect that this will give a fillip to voice telephony through the data networks,” the telecom secretary said. Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday assured early “implementation” of the Telecom Commission’s approval for offering in-flight connectivity within Indian airspace. According to the minister, who also heads the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the government will now “work towards creating the license framework” for a special category of service providers called ‘Inflight’ connectivity provider. Prabhu pointed out that the approval will also allow airlines to provide “dramatic, yet cost effective, enhancements to the passenger experience”.

ASI’s beauty parlor treatment cause of Taj’s browning: Historian BRIJ KHANDELWAL, AGRA

W

elcoming the Supreme Court’s concern over discoloring of the Taj Mahal, the 17th century monument to love in Agra, historian Prof R. Nath, an authority on Mughal architecture, said “mud-pack treatment with ‘Multani Mitti’ was the chief cause (of its browning) and this should be stopped forthwith”. The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed concern over the Taj Mahal’s color turning brown as it pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government and the Archaeological Survey of India.

Asking if anybody had any clue about the color of the white marble monument turning brownish, a bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta asked the Central government to take the assistance of Indian experts or from abroad to see the extent of damage and if it can be reversed and the steps that can be taken to check it. The court expressed its concern after petitioner-in-person M.C. Mehta produced some photographs showing that the Taj was turning brownish. The court was hearing an application for the cutting of trees in the Taj Trapezium Zone.

Talking to IANS on phone, Nath said: “I had on dozens of occasions warned that the beauty parlor treatment with Fuller’s Earth would leave permanent scars and make the surface rough for deposits in the ambient air to settle down. In their wisdom, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) experts have damaged the original ‘Vajr Lep’, a concoction of paste using local ingredients, to provide a permanent cover.” Nath said another problem area in respect of the security and safety of the Taj Mahal is the dry river Yamuna. “On scores of occasions, and in a

number of my research papers, I had recorded that Yamuna was an integral part of the Taj Mahal complex and the foundation resting on wells needed water round the year. The state and central governments ignored the warning I had given

that the water in the river was necessary to buttress the heavy weight of the main edifice. “The dome alone weighs 12,500 tonnes. My fear is some day the huge structure could just cave in,” he said.

Can Yechury form anti-BJP coalition? In the wake of its weak position at the national level, the tussle between the two CPI-M factions will be intense AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

G

iven the weakened position of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) at the national level, the uneasy truce between its two factions led, respectively, by the present and former General Secretary, will be of interest mainly to the party faithful. Even then, what the other political parties will be looking at is the kind of “understanding”, as mandated by the party congress, which the CPI-M will be able to reach with the Congress and whether the opponents of this line — former General Secretary Prakash Karat and his comrades — will accept the formulation or wreck it. The tussle between Karat and the present General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, will be intense in the three states where the CPI-M still has some influence — Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura.

Of these, it is in Kerala that the Yechury-Karat confrontation will be most fierce since the state is the home ground of Karat and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, both of whom are against any deal with the Congress. Since communist “discipline” stipulates that once a political line has been accepted, everyone, including its critics, has to abide by it, the Kerala scene will be enlivened by the CPI-M’s pursuit at the ground level of an “understanding” with the party’s main rival, the Congress. True, the arrangement will be only for the Lok Sabha elections when the two parties are expected to work together against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is known to be rather weak in the state. Had there been a stronger opponent, there might have been a possibility, however faint, of the red flag and the tricolor fluttering together. In the present context, the distance

between the CPI-M and the Congress is unlikely to be bridged, whatever the party line. All that can be expected is that their mutual recriminations will be put on hold. Unlike Kerala, where the CPI-M and the Congress are evenly matched as can be seen from the way the two parties come out on top in alternate assembly elections, both are quite weak in West Bengal at present. It is perhaps for this reason that the animus between them is not as strong as in Kerala, which is why they were able to fight the last assembly election jointly against the Trinamool Congress although to no avail. The two parties will also know that they are losing ground to the BJP in West Bengal, which has pushed the CPI-M down to the third position in recent elections and the Congress to the fourth. The Trinamool Congress, of course, remains at the top. For the two

“losers”, however, the setbacks may facilitate their coming together in a rescue act. From this standpoint, there is unlikely to be any difficulty in reaching an understanding between the CPI-M and the Congress, except for the fact that it is not known what the ties will be between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress. If

the projected joint platform against the BJP advocated by Mamata Banerjee takes shape, then a threesome comprising the Trinamool Congress, the CPI-M and the Congress cannot be ruled out although such a combination will be a rerun of the hodge-podge anti-Congress Janata conglomerate of 1977 and may prove to be equally fragile.

How football changed the life of a poor dalit girl Hailing from a small village in Bhiwani district of Haryana, Anyabai dreams of playing like Messi MUDITA GIROTRA, ALAKHPURA (HARYANA)

A

bout four years ago, 15year-old Anyabai won Rs 540,00 when she led her school team to victory in a statelevel football match. The prize money was more than what her mother earned in an entire year. Hailing from Alakhpura, a village some 30 km from the district headquarters of Bhiwani in Haryana, Anyabai is a Dalit by caste and desperately poor by means. Her father died of a heart attack when she was just two and the burden of earning for the fourmember family passed on to her mother, Maya Devi, whose life story provides a window into the struggles of people at the lowest rungs of society. Scheduled Caste communities like hers, comprising about 16.6 percent of country’s population, are generally an oppressed lot, particularly in impoverished rural areas where they are discriminated against by higher castes and are condemned to menial cleaning jobs that no one else will do.

Football is not only helping Anyabai (right) find a purpose in life, but is also helping her bring her family out of the vicious cycle of poverty. (Photo:IANS)

There are also those who have defied the system and become achievers in their own right. One of them is the fatherless girl Anyabai, who could have been a victim of the oppressive systems of caste and patriarchy, but her skills as a footballer helped her challenge both. Just a few years after

she started playing, she has already represented India twice at the international level. “She gets around Rs 50,000 to Rs 600,00 for playing every national match. Last year, she won around Rs 250,000 by playing a few matches,” Sonika Bijarnia, her school coach, told IANS. “She

manages to play two-three matches every year.” So, football is not only helping her find a purpose in life and represent her country at the highest levels, but is also helping her bring her family out of the vicious cycle of poverty. Anyabai played in the U-15 South Asian Football Federation in 2017, in which India lost to Bangladesh in the finals. She recollects the final with a bit of disappointment, saying: “We lost 1-0.” Anyabai, who has a sister and a brother, is her mother’s pride. “Nobody in the entire family has achieved so much,” Maya Devi said. “I didn’t have any hopes (while) Anyabai kept playing,” she added. In 2016, she played in the Indian U-14 women’s football team at the AFC Regional (South and Central) Girls Championship in Tajikistan. “Life changed. Of course, it did. The scholarships I have been getting have helped us to build a two-room set in the village,” Anyabai said. “When I go out of my country, there is fear about going to an

unknown land. It is a very different feeling. It’s also nice that I get to make friends from other parts of the country and the world,” she said. “I used to struggle with English earlier. I try speaking the language now. There is less hesitation.” Despite some improvements, the life of struggle continues for Maya Devi and her family. She has modest dreams for her daughter. “Aap logon jaise ban jaaye kisi din, yahi chahti hun (all I want is, she becomes like one of you someday).” But Anyabai’s dreams are bigger. “I wish to grow up and play like (Argentine footballer Lionel) Messi,” she said passionately. The girl has plans of taking up social sciences as her subject in class 11, along with language and vocational subjects. “I will study further after class 12, but then I wish to just play and study football after that.” The young player further cheerfully told about the two huge grounds in the village, where, she, along with around 200 other girls, goes for a three-hour practice twice every day.

Don’t quit Iran deal: UN tells Trump The US president has until May 12, to decide whether to stick with the deal in which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanction IANS, UNITED NATIONS

No credible evidence on n-weapons: IAEA

U

N Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged Donald Trump not to walk away from an international deal designed to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. Speaking to the BBC, Guterres said there was a real risk of war if the 2015 agreement was not preserved. Trump has been a strong critic of the accord, in which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions. The US president has until May 12, to decide whether to stick with the deal. Guterres told the BBC that the Iran agreement was an “important diplomatic victory” and should be maintained. “We should not scrap it unless we have a good alternative,” he said, adding: “We face dangerous times.” It comes just days after Israel revealed “secret nuclear files” accusing Iran of having covertly pursued nuclear weapons. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the files provided proof that the Obama-era nuclear deal was “built on lies”, the BBC report said. European allies France, the UK and Germany meanwhile have agreed that pursuing the current nuclear deal with Iran is the best way to stop it developing nuclear weapons. In 2015, Tehran signed a deal with the US, China, Russia, Ger-

Afghanistan attack: 10 journalists killed KABUL/KANDAHAR: At least 30 people, including 10 journalists, were killed as two suicide bombers blew themselves up in quick succession in the Afghan capital on Monday. Hours later, another suicide bomber struck in Kandahar province killing 11 madrassa students. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the Kabul bombings where French news agency AFP’s chief photographer Shah Marai was among the journalists killed. There was no claim of responsibility for the bloodbath in Kandahar, a former stronghold of the Taliban. In a separate incident, 29-yearold BBC reporter Ahmad Shah was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Khost province, taking the toll in the Monday violence to 42. many, France and Britain agreeing to limit its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. Under the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran is committed to slashing the number of its centrifuges, which are machines used to enrich uranium. It is also meant to cut its stockpile of enriched uranium drastically and not enrich remaining uranium to the level needed to produce nuclear weapons. Trump has frequently voiced his opposition to the “insane” deal, which he has described as the “worst ever”. Unless the European signatories to the deal and the US Congress addressed his concerns he plans to

withdraw on the next deadline for waiving sanctions. Trump is unhappy that the deal only limited Iran’s nuclear activities for a fixed period (till 2025) and had failed to stop the development of ballistic missiles. He also said it had handed Iran a $100bn windfall that it used “as a slush fund for weapons, terror, and oppression” across the Middle East. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has questioned the legitimacy of efforts by the US and France to change the nuclear deal with his country. He has said that Iran “will not accept any restrictions beyond its commitments” to comply with international rules in the years ahead.

VIENNA: The UN nuclear agency has reiterated that no evidence was found in Iran relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device after 2009. “The same report stated that the Agency had no credible indications of activities in Iran relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device after 2009,” said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a statement on Tuesday about Iranian nuclear issue, saying that its consideration of this issue was

closed, Xinhua reported. The statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised presentation on Monday, disclosed files allegedly obtained by Israel’s intelligence agency from Iran’s “secret nuclear archive,” saying the files prove Iran has secretly worked on nuclear weapons. On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry dismissed Netanyahu’s allegations as “lies” aimed at influencing the US President’s upcoming decision about the Iranian nuclear deal.

France willing to seek broader nuclear pact with Iran SYDNEY: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said that France is willing to seek a broader nuclear pact with Iran even if the US withdraws from the deal that Tehran signed with world powers in 2015. “I don’t know what the US President will decide on May 12. Whatever the decision, we will have to prepare a broader negotiation and a broader deal because I think nobody wants a war or an escalation of tensions in the region,” Macron said in Sydney.

He also stressed that the agreement was the best way to monitor the current activity of the Iranian regime. Macron made the comments during an appearance with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who also supported the pact with Iran. The French President called the deal with Tehran as “a starting point” and advocated expanding it beyond 2025 while improving control over Iranian regime’s ballistic missile activities and containing it within the region. —IANS

‘Bad agreement with N.Korea not an option’

P

resident Moon Jae-in on Wednesday flatly dismissed the idea of US troops stationed in South Korea pulling out following a peace treaty that could be signed between the two Koreas, saying the issue has nothing to do with Pyongyang. “US Forces Korea (USFK) is a matter of the South Korea-US alliance. It has nothing to do with signing a peace treaty,” Moon said, according to his spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom. In a historic summit held at the border truce village of Panmunjom on April 27, Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to push for a peace treaty that would formally end the 1950-53 Korean War. Moon’s remarks came shortly after his special adviser Moon Chung-in hinted at the possibility of a withdrawal, Yonhap news agency reported.

About 29,000 US soldiers are based in South Korea, under a security agreement reached after the war ended in 1953. However, an official from the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae dismissed the possibility of US troop withdrawal, highlighting the role of USFK as a mediator. “The government’s position is

that the USFK is playing the role of a mediator between major powers surrounding the country, such as China and Japan. It is the government’s stance that the USFK is needed,” the Cheong Wa Dae official told reporters. The leaders of North and South Korea pledged on April 27 to work towards a “common goal” of denu-

Indian-American doctor indicted A IANS, WASHINGTON

n Indian-American doctor has been indicted in Illinois for pocketing nearly $1 million in fraudulent health insurance claims through his medical practice, officials said. Dr Pranav Patel, 51, of Chicago suburb Burr Ridge allegedly submitted false insurance claims for medical tests that were never performed and used some of his patients’ names without their knowledge to submit such claims while he owned the Palos Medical Care practice, according to the Northern District of Illinois’ US Attorney’s Office.

The accused allegedly submitted false insurance claims for medical tests.

Starting in 2008 and continuing until June 2013, Patel fraudulently obtained at least $950,000 in pay-

ments from Medicare and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the indictment stated. According to a Chicago Tribune report, Patel was charged with seven counts of healthcare fraud, three counts of making false statements in relation to a healthcare matter, and two counts of aggravated identity theft. During one occasion, Patel fabricated a seven-page medical record indicating that a patient had come to the office for a follow-up visit and examination, when the patient had actually come to re-fill a prescription, the report said. Praising the contributions of Asian Americans, he said: “Through their industriousness and love of country, our Nation has enjoyed the privileges and enrichments of multiple innovations and societal advancements.” Chawla, who was born in Karnal. She emigrated to the US with an aeronautical engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College, died in 2003 on her second mission when space shuttle Columbia disintegrated while returning to earth. “Indian American Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian descent to fly in space,” Trump said in his proclamation.

KARNATAKA ELECTION: HEAT ON Modi attacks dynasty politics, dares Rahul to speak for 15 minutes minus paper; The Congress said Prime Minister constantly thinking about how to criticize Rahul IANS, KARNATAKA

L

aunching his election campaign in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of being obsessed with “politics of dynasty” and dared party chief Rahul Gandhi to speak for 15 minutes on the achievements of the Siddaramaiah government without a piece of paper. Addressing election meetings, he also charged the Congress with blocking development and blamed it for political violence that led to the death of several RSS and BJP cadres in the state. Referring to Gandhi’s challenge to face him in Parliament, Modi sought to turn the tables by asking him to speak for 15 minutes on the achievements of the government in Karnataka without reading from a piece of paper. The Prime Minister’s attack came in the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s challenge last week that if he was allowed to speak for 15 minutes in Parliament, Modi would not be able to withstand it. Modi took a dig at Rahul Gandhi saying: “He is correct. There is no way ordinary people like me, who do not even dress well, can sit

‘UDF to be nonentity in Kerala’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI-M on May 3 said it will retain the Chengannur seat in the May 28 bypoll as it promised drubbing of the opposition, saying the Congress-led UDF will become a nonentity in Kerala politics. The Communist Party of IndiaMarxist candidate for Chengannur bypoll will not just retain the seat but will win with an increased margin, said party secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. He said there was no doubt over the outcome. “The Congress-led United Democratic Front’s popularity is on the wane and our aim is to ensure that they become a non-entity in Kerala politics. “If you look into the constituents of the UDF at the 2016 assembly polls, they have already suffered serious reverses — as the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) has left them and joined us, while the Kerala Congress (Mani) is now not with them and they are not campaigning for the Congress candidate,” said Balakrishnan. The bye-election was necessitated by the death of CPI-M legislator K.K. Ramachandran Nair in January. —IANS

with such high and mighty people like the Congress President.” But immediately he changed gear and launched a blistering attack on Rahul Gandhi. “The Congress President is a ‘naamdaar’. So how does he know about the efforts of ‘kaamdaars’. We are kaamdaars (known by our work). What is our level that we

can sit with people like the Congress President who look down upon us,” he asked. Challenging Rahul Gandhi to speak for 15 minutes on the achievements of the Siddaramaiah government “without reading from any piece of paper”, he said: “You can speak in Hindi, English or your mother’s mother tongue (Italian).”

He also challenged Rahul Gandhi to take Visveswaraya’s name five times in the 15-minute speech. “That is enough. The people of Karnataka will measure the strength of your words.” Modi also lamented that all development in Karnataka has been blocked by the ruling Congress due to its obsession with fam-

ily politics. “Where there is Congress, all roads that lead to development are blocked. There is only family politics, corruption and lack of harmony,” Modi said. Modi also attacked the Congress for indulging in “family politics” by allowing a party’s leaders kith and kin to contest in the Assembly elections and hit out at Siddaramaiah. “For the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) the rule is ‘2+1’. He will contest from two seats and has given his old seat (Varuna in Mysuru) to his son (Yathindra) and for the other ministers (in the state cabinet) the rule seems to be ‘1+1’, allowing their relatives to fight polls. “For the Congress, it has always been about family politics. But for us (BJP), it is about people’s politics. People of the state will decide which kind of politics they will choose (in the upcoming election),” Modi said. Law and order in Karnataka has collapsed under Congress rule, Modi said. The attack came ahead of polling for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, to be held on May 12. The results will be declared on May 15.

PM’s words must have truth, weight: Rahul Rahul gives Modi ‘F’ grade NEW DELHI: Attacking Narendra Modi for letting the farmers down in Karnataka, Congress President Rahul Gandhi in a report card gave the Prime Minister an ‘F’ Grade for his performance in the agricultural sector in the state. Gandhi, in a Tweet, said the Prime Minister’s crop insurance scheme has made the “farmers suffer” while filling the coffers of the private insurance companies that have made “huge profits”.

The Congress chief said that the farmers did not receive the additional 50 per cent on their Minimum Support Price (MSP) that they have been demanding. “Contribution to Congress state governments 8,500 crore Farm Loan waiver = 0 Rs. “PM’s crop insurance scheme: Farmers suffer; pvt (private) insurance companies make huge profits. “No MSP+50%, for Karnataka farmers. Grade = F.” —IANS

ttacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi in battleground Karnataka over his failure to fulfil his poll promises, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said there should be “truth and there should be weight” in the Prime Ministers words. “There should be truth in the words that come out of the Prime Minister’s mouth. There should be some weight in his words,” Gandhi

said while addressing a rally at Aurad on May 3. “He said he would deposit Rs 15 lakh each in poor citizens’ bank accounts. Did he do it? He promised two crore jobs to the youth every year. Did he do it? He said he would give higher minimum support price to farmer. But he did none of this,” Gandhi added. “Then what does he actually do? He helps only 15 persons. He helps the Reddy brothers (Janardhana, Karunakara and Somashekara Reddy) and wants to field them in

the elections,” he said. Gandhi said that Modi had little to speak about Karnataka, its farmers and youths, and therefore the Prime Minister was resorting to personal attacks on him (Rahul Gandhi). “Modiji has very little to speak in this elections. He cannot speak about farners because he neither waived off their loans nor provided suitable MSP. He cannot speak of education, healthcare or developmental issues because the state’s

Congress government has performed excellently on all fronts. So he is resorting to personal attacks on me. But this does not behove of a Prime Minister of India,” Gandhi said. “Small businesses are closing down due to Gabbar Singh Tax (GST) and demonetization. But Amit Shah’s son’s business registered windfall profits. Why is Modiji silent on this? He has made fun of me but has not answered my questions,” the Congress President said.

BCCI NOD FOR D/N TEST AWAITED Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland advocats more freedom for host nations “The Adelaide Test match in the day-night format has been a huge success. It’s been a great story in terms of attendances, crowds and atmosphere but also television audiences.” “It’s also the way of the future,” he added.

IANS, MELBOURNE

A

waiting the BCCI’s nod to play a day-night Test in Adelaide during India’s tour Down Under later this year, Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland has advocated more freedom for host nations to schedule pink ball matches without the consent of the visitors when the ICC Test Championship begins in 2019. Sutherland’s comments has come after a few countries expressed their reluctance in the past with CA over playing the pink ball Test, with India being the latest, preferring to play the traditional red-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval later this year in December.

BRIEFS: England pip India to become top ODI side DUBAI: England leapfrogged India to gain the No.1 spot in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) OneDay International (ODI) rankings after the annual update which saw the men-in-blue losing a point to be positioned at second in the latest rankings released this week. England, who last topped the ODI rankings in January 2013 have gained eight points and moved to 125 points after the performances in the 2014-15 season has been dropped from the latest calculations while those from the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons were weighted at 50 percent.

India tour ‘ultimate’ challenge: Oz coach MELBOURNE: Minutes after being appointed Australia coach across all formats, former Test opener Justin Langer said his team’s greatest challenge awaits in India three years from now. Langer was this week unveiled as the head coach on a four-year contract, that will see him at the helm in two Ashes Series, a World Cup and World T20 tournament. But the 47-year-old Langer cited a Test series win on Indian soil as the pinnacle and one that is required if the outfit he now oversees wants to lay claim to ‘greatness’. “We’ve got a World Cup, a T20 World Cup, a couple of Ashes — I get nervous when I start thinking about it. There are some big tournaments coming up,” Langer told a media conference. —IANS

India will tour Oz for three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs from November 21 to January 19 Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland. (Photo: change.org)

“I think personally the home country should have the right to schedule matches as it sees fit and

start them at whatever time of day they want,” Sutherland was quoted as saying by SEN Radio.

Australia have won all the daynight Tests played at the Adelaide Oval, defeating New Zealand, South Africa and England. Sutherland opined that their

great record with the pink ball could be a reason for India’s hesitation. “India may or may not come around to that idea for this tour but I still believe it’s the way of the future. I think everyone in world cricket knows that,” the 52-yearold said. “To be frank, I think they want to come out here and beat us. There’s a sense, or a reality, that Australia has won each of the pink-ball Test matches that have played in Australia and there may be a sense that it gives us a bit of an advantage,” he added. India will tour Australia for three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs to be played from November 21 to January 19.

ICC clears Pak’s Hafeez Sunita Lakra to captain India to bowl in int’l cricket in Asian Champions Trophy IANS, DUBAI

P

akistani off-spinning allrounder Mohammad Hafeez has been cleared to resume bowling in international cricket following remedial work to his action, the ICC confirmed this week. According to a statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Hafeez, who has been suspended from bowling due to an illegal action three times, has remodelled his bowling style so that the amount of elbow extension now falls within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC regulations. Hafeez underwent a reassessment at Loughborough University last month and subsequently had his suspension lifted by the game’s

global governing body. However, the ICC has allowed match officials to report Hafeez in the future if they believe he is displaying a suspect M. Hafeez action and not reproducing the legal action he showed at his reassessment. The ICC further said that match officials will be provided with images and video footage of the bowler’s remodelled legal bowling action. Hafeez, a veteran of 200 ODIs, 81 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and 50 Tests, was first suspended from bowling in December 2014 after being reported in during Pakistan’s Test series against New Zealand in the UAE.

NEW DELHI: Experienced defender Sunita Lakra will lead the 18-member Indian women’s squad at the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament to be held in Donghae in South Korea from May 13. Sunita was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Rani, who has been rested for the tournament, while goalkeeper Savita will shoulder the responsibility of vice captain, Hockey India said in a statement. India’s defense is full of experience with Deepika, Deep Grace Ekka, Suman Devi Thoudam and Gurjit Kaur who doubles up as a drag flicker. The midfield will feature Monika, Namita Toppo, Nikki Pradhan, Neha Goyal, Lilima Minz, Navjot Kaur and

Udita. India’s attack will be led by Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and Anupa Barla. The Indians, who go into the tournament as defending champions, will be hoping to ride on the good show at the recently held Commonwealth Games in Australia where they entered the semi-inals after 12 years but eventually finished fourth. In 2016, the Indian team defeated China in the final to win the previous edition of Asian Champions Trophy.

IPL 2018: Delhi pip Rajasthan by 4 runs to stay alive Brief scores:

IANS, NEW DELHI

C

aptain Shreyas Iyer and stumper Rishabh Pant struck rollicking half centuries to keep Delhi Daredevils’ play-off hopes alive in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the hosts pipped Rajasthan Royals by four runs by D/L method in a raintruncated clash at the Ferozshah Kotla. With sporadic rain affecting the proceedings in the first innings, Rajasthan’s target was curtailed to 151 from 12 overs and the visitors were very much in the chase, thanks to a stroke-filled 26-ball 67

Delhi Daredevils 196/6 (Rishabh Pant 69, Shreyas Iyer 50, Prithvi Shaw 47; Jaydev Unadkat 3/46) beat Rajasthan Royals 146/5 (Jos Buttler 67, D Arcy Short 44; Trent Boult 2/26) by 4 runs by D/L method.

Delhi Daredevils’ Captain Shreyas Iyer

from opener Jos Buttler. Pacer Trent Boult pulled back things for the home side with a couple of wickets and a brilliant last over where he defended 15 runs as Delhi rose one spot to the No.7 in the points table. Buttler began the chase, clobber-

ing the Delhi bowlers mercilessly all over the park to bring up Rajasthan’s 50 in just 19 balls in the company of D’Arcy Short (44 off 24), who played the perfect second fiddle to the Englishman. Buttler meted out special treatment to young pacer Avesh Khan, smashing him thrice over the boundary as he got to his individual 50 off just 18 deliveries as the home crowd began to lose hopes of a win. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, however, brought the smiles back to the fans, who stayed well past midnight braving the heavy rain, by getting Buttler stumped with a top spinner.

‘America’s Smartest Family’ a big draw

BY DR. NILESH D. MEHTA EW YORK, NY -- Zee TV’s original production, ‘America’s Smartest Family, has been attracting large audience numbers all season. Now in its 8th episode, and heading towards the semi-finals, the show, which pits families against families in a unique quiz format, is poised to become the Number 1 show in its time slot and category. Hosted by 23-year-old YouTube sensation Zaid Ali, ‘America’s Smartest Family” is a unique mashup of the American household favorites ‘Family Feud’ and ‘Jeopardy,’ but with that special ZEE TV twist that celebrates its South Asian heritage. Complete with a diverse set of categories and a buzzer, each episode will feature five challenging in-studio question rounds, testing pre-screened contestants on their ability to answer quickly and, more importantly, their ability to work as a team. Only the fastest, most well-rounded family will get to take home the crown. Round One consists of four questions, with a dice roll deciding which family goes first. Participants can choose from one of five topics--science, math, arts, history and geography. Once a category is chosen, it may not be selected for the remainder of the round. During the first round, 100 points will be awarded for every correct answer. There are no deductions for wrong answers until Round Three and four, where a mistake can cost a team 100 points for every incorrect answer. As the game progresses, questions become

increasingly difficult. By rounds three and four - each correct answer is worth 200 points. During the fifth and final round, the game takes a turn and host Zaid Ali spices things up by offering clues. If the team answers correctly without a clue, a maximum of 1000 points is awarded. If the family choses to get clues, each clue costs them 200 points. At the end of five rounds, scores may vary from -2400 to 5500. In the event of a tie, an extra tie-breaker round will identify the winner. Produced by leading firm, Touchdown Productions, the show was conceptualized as a Zee Originals property and produced by Touchdown Productions. The production was done over a one-month period in a custom built studio accommodating the set. A crew of over 35 apart from the post-production team

and knowledge partners worked for almost 6 months to bring the show to life. “We are very happy with the result of this first-ever endeavor and look forward to producing multiple seasons of the show,” said, Rahul Walia, executive producer and CEO of Touchdown Productions. “The effort of the crew, Director and channel team was a winning combination,” he added. “I’m very happy with the outcome of the show whether it is on the production end, or the sponsorship end. With this we can easily allude to Zee TV’s initiative of being the first movers in the market. I am looking forward to learning who the winning family turns out to be,” said Sameer Targe, head of Americas for Zee TV. ‘America’s Smartest Family’ is broadcast every Saturday at 9 pm. EST; 9:30 pm PST; and 9 pm AST on ZEE TV.

United Punjabis hosts grand Vaisakhi Mela

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Nipam Patel, a leading scholar in modern evolutionary and developmental biology, has been appointed director of the Marine Biological Laboratory, an affiliate of the University of Chicago (UC). The university announced on April 23 that Patel will also be appointed as a faculty member at the University of Chicago with effect from September 4. 7-Eleven’s trick to keep panhandlers away

BY A STAFF WRITER ODESTO, CA -- A 7-Eleven in California has found a way to keep people from panhandling and loitering outside the store: crank up classical music. Sukhi Sandhu, who owns the franchise in Modesto, said his customers tell him they feel safer since he started blasting symphonies and occasional operas over outdoor speakers. “Once the music started, the riffraff left,” said Manuel Souza, who’s homeless and jokingly referred to himself as part of the riffraff. The loud music makes it hard “to hang out and gossip and joke around” near the store, says Souza. The classical music is part of a 7-Eleven program that encourages non-confrontational methods to reduce loitering, Sandhu said. It eliminates any risks faced by clerks when asking panhandlers to leave, he said. Another method employed at some stores is a device that emits a high-pitched screech similar to a mosquito buzzing in your ear. Clerks turn the device on and off as needed. Classical music is more effective, Sandhu said, and he plans to introduce it at other stores he owns in central California.

57-month jail for Indian for $2.5-million fraud

On April 28, the celebrations began with an ornate Abhishekam of the deities— Shri Ganesh, Shri Narasimha and Shri Sudarshan--with sacred water, fruit juices, and flowers by Pt. Ganesh Ji. The Lords were also adorned with new dresses and jewelries. Lord Vishnu Sahasranamam Patham was performed for the protection of society from evil. The Lord received an offering of varieties of Bhoga items. Melodious Bhajans were sung by

Rita Patel accompanied by Atul Soni and Kamlesh Desai. Devotees welcomed the entry of children in the form of Bhakta Prahlad, and Shri Narad Ji. Shri Narad Ji gave Guru Mantra to Bhakta Prahlad. Students protest, send letter to Modi: rapes BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Students and faculty from schools across Columbia University were joined by members of the South Asian diaspora from across New York City to sign an open letter to the Prime Minister of India, condemning the recent cases of sexual violence and political inaction by the ruling dispensation, on April 20 in the Columbia University campus in New York City. Over 120 students, representing several schools of Columbia University, carried out a candlelight vigil under the banner ‘SILENCE NO MORE’ to express solidarity with the victims and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity. The event was supported by the Indian Students at Columbia, a student body comprising of students from India who are currently studying across engineering, public policy, management, law and several other disciplines across Columbia University. Several other schools like the Columbia Journalism School, Law School, Business School, Teachers College, Columbia College and School of International and Public Affairs were represented by students and faculty present. The group marched from the iconic Earl Hall to the Butler Library where they expressed their protest through theater, dance and music which was followed by remarks by students, faculty members like Prof Shayonee Mitra and Prof Gauri Viswanathan and scholars and activists from other universities Ruchira Gupta, Biju Matthew and Sujatha Gidla, among others. BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA -- An Indian American teenager, who was wanted on a felony firearms possession warrant, was killed on April 5 by police officers in Fremont, Calif., after he allegedly fired at them. According to a Fremont Police Department (FPD) report released on April 19, Nathaniel ‘Nathan’ Prasad and his mother were driving in Fremont early evening on April 5. Prasad, an 18-year-old Hayward, Calif., resident, was wanted on a felony firearms possession warrant, a felony probation warrant, and a misdemeanor evading arrest warrant for fleeing from a Fremont school resource officer on March 22. The FPD’s Street Crimes Unit identified Prasad as a passenger in the car driven by his mother. According to the FPD report: “Two patrol officers responded to the area, activated their emergency lights and siren, and stopped the suspect vehicle. The driver of the vehicle stopped and Prasad fled from the right passenger side of the car on foot.” One of the officers gave chase and followed Prasad to confront him. “Prasad pulled a firearm from his waist area and it appears that he fired one to two shots in the direction of the officer. The officer drew his duty weapon, returned fire and broadcast over the police radio that the suspect had a gun,” according to the police report. Additional officers arrived at the scene, along with a K-9 dog. Prasad ran toward the officers before veering and running south into oncoming lanes of traffic. Four officers began to chase Prasad on foot. “Prasad pulled a gun from his waist area, pointed it in the direction of the officers and it appears he fired at least one round,” reported the police. “In response to Prasad’s fire, officers shot in the direction of Prasad, striking him several times, causing him to fall,” according to the police report. Prasad was an honor roll student at Hayward High School, where he also played on the school’s football and basketball teams.

On March 26, the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly passed a joint resolution designating April of every year as “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.” On March 28, Delaware Governor John Carney had declared April as ‘Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month’ during which the public would be educated about Sikhism.

90% people breathe toxic air: WHO

The body has released new data on air pollution levels in over 100 countries IANS, GENEVA

A

ir pollution levels remain dangerously high in many parts of the world with nine out of 10 people breathing air containing high levels of pollutants, the World Health Organization (WHO) said this week. It praised India’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Scheme for providing some 37 million free liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections in the past two years that helps promote the use of clean household energy. The WHO’s updated estima-

tions reveal around 90 percent of people worldwide breathe polluted air and an alarming death toll of seven million people every year caused by ambient (outdoor) and household air pollution. “Air pollution threatens us all, but the poorest and most marginalized people bear the brunt of the burden,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. “It is unacceptable that over three billion people — most of them women and children — are still breathing deadly smoke every day from using polluting stoves and fuels in their homes. If we don’t

take urgent action on air pollution, we will never come close to achieving sustainable development.” The UN body launched its latest data on air pollution levels for more than 4,000 cities in over 100 countries as well as the estimated health effects from both ambient

Gut bacteria linked to atherosclerosis IANS, TORONTO

T

he gut microbiome plays an important role in an individual’s risk for atherosclerosis, one of the major causes of heart attack and stroke, says a study. Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries. The researchers believe that the new finding could open the door for new treatment options for those patients with unexplained plaque build-up in the arteries. In order to understand the role that bacteria in the gut may play in atherosclerosis, the researchers examined blood levels of metabolic products of the intestinal microbiome. They studied 316 people from

How kefir may lower your blood pressure NEW YORK: Drinking kefir — a fermented probiotic milk known to help maintain the balance of good bacteria in the digestive system — can have a positive effect on blood pressure by promoting communication between the gut and brain, a study conducted on rats has found. After nine weeks of kefir supplementation, the treated rats had lower levels of endotoxins — toxic substances associated with disruption in the cells — lower blood pressure and improved intestinal permeability as compared to the untreated group. “Kefir antihypertensive-associated mechanisms involve gut microbiotabrain axis communication during hypertension,” the study said. —IANS

different groups of patients, including those with unexplained atherosclerosis, who do not have any traditional risk factors but still have high levels of plaque burden. “What we found was that patients with unexplained atherosclerosis had significantly higher blood levels of these toxic metabolites that are produced by the

intestinal bacteria,” said David Spence, Professor at Western University, London, Canada. The researchers measured the build-up of plaque in the arteries using carotid ultrasound. The study, published in the journal Atherosclerosis, noted that these differences could not be explained by diet or kidney function, pointing to a difference in the make-up of their intestinal bacteria. “The finding, and studies we have performed since, present us with an opportunity to use probiotics to counter these compounds in the gut and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Gregor Reid, Professor at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University.

and household air pollution. Air pollution represents the biggest environmental risk to health. Yet, solutions exist and the data shows some countries have made substantial progress. WHO estimates that around seven million people die every year

from exposure to fine particles in polluted air that penetrate deep into the lungs and cardiovascular system, causing diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections, including pneumonia.

Baking soda may help combat rheumatoid arthritis NEW YORK: Drinking baking soda daily may help reduce the destructive inflammation of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, say scientists. While the immune system normally protects us from disease and infection, in someone who has an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks healthy cells in the body by mistake. Drinking baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, tells the spleen — which is part of the immune system — to go easy on the immune response, the study said. “Certainly, drinking bicarbonate affects the spleen and we think it’s through the mesothelial cells,” said

study co-author Paul O’Connor from Augusta University in Georgia, US. The findings, published in the Journal of Immunology, showed that when rats or healthy people drink a solution of baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, it becomes a trigger for the stomach to make more acid to digest the next meal. — IANS

Taking vitamin B6 could help you recall dreams IANS, SYDNEY

I

f you want to remember your dreams, taking vitamin B6 supplements before going to bed may help, suggests new research from University of Adelaide in Australia. “Our results show that taking vitamin B6 improved people’s ability to recall dreams compared to a placebo,” said study co-author Denholm Aspy from the University’s School of Psychology. The study, published online in the journal Perceptual and Motor Skills, included 100 participants from around Australia taking highdose vitamin B6 supplements before going to bed for five consecutive days. “Vitamin B6 did not

affect the vividness, bizarreness or color of their dreams, and did not affect other aspects of their sleep patterns,” Aspy said.

“This is the first time that such a study into the effects of vitamin B6 and other B vitamins on dreams has been carried out on a large and

diverse group of people,” Aspy added. The participants in the study took 240mg of vitamin B6 immediately before bed. Prior to taking the supplements, many of the participants rarely remembered their dreams, but they reported improvements by the end of the study. “It seems as time went on my dreams were clearer and clearer and easier to remember. I also did not lose fragments as the day went on,” said one of the participants after completing the study. Vitamin B6 occurs naturally in various foods, including whole grain cereals, legumes, fruits (like banana and avocado), vegetables like spinach and potato), milk, cheese, eggs, red meat, liver, and fish.

ver 60 National Film Awards recipients have decided to not attend the award distribution ceremony as President Ram Nath Kovind will be giving away only 11 awards, breaking from a long-held tradition, which they have condemned it as a “breach of trust”. The filmmakers and artistes from across the country have written a letter addressed to the Directorate of Film Festival, President’s office, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to express that they feel “dejected rather than honored” for their work. Amitabh questions Twitter over ‘constant’ followers MUMABI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, one of the most widely followed Indian celebrities on Twitter, has questioned the micro-blogging platform’s management about how they manage to keep the number of followers constant. “Dear Twitter Management, it’s quite amazing how you manage to keep numbers of followers constant and not moving at all despite maximum activity??? Well done! I mean how do you keep the score board from not moving despite every ball being hit for a 6!” tweeted Amitabh. His “well done!” comment was

accompanied by clap emojis. Big B’s official and verified Twitter handle @SrBachchan has 34.3 million followers. Earlier this Amitabh Bachchan year, the veteran actor had threatened to quit Twitter, accusing the micro-blogging website of reducing his followers. That time, the fan following of Big B quickly dropped from 33 million to 32.9 million. It led a team of officials from Twitter to met him.

Kapil sends legal notice to scribe IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor-comedian Kapil Sharma this week sent a legal notice to SpotboyE and journalist Vickey Lalwani for “defamatory articles” and “character assassination”. IANS has a copy of the notice in which Kapil has demanded an unconditional public apology within seven days of receiving the notice. He has urged the publication to “desist from publishing and airing defamatory, slanderous and libelous statements/news /interviews” against him”, and has asked them to immediately withdraw the contents of all defamatory articles/publica-

tions on all forms of media. Kapil’s advocate Tanveer Nizam confirmed sending the legal notice, and told IANS: “In view of the articles by Vickey Lalwani on SpotboyE

to wilfully defame my client, we have sent them a legal notice to publicly apologize within seven days, failing which we will institute civil and criminal proceedings against both.” The controversy happened last month when an audio call in which Kapil’s heard hurling abuses at Lalwani, was made public. Kapil was agonized by articles with “false and frivolous, defamatory personal information”, which as the notice says, are “a product of collusion” between Lalwani and the comedian’s earlier managers/associates Neeti and Preeti Simoes to “malign his image in the eyes of his fans, industry and public at large”.

‘102 Not Out’: It’s a fairy-tale, heart-warming celebration of life

T

here have been few more funny and empathetic portraits of generational dramas than Director Umesh Shukla’s, 102 Not Out. But what makes his film compelling is the presence of three superb actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and Jimit Trivedi — who balance the performance scales. The script written by Saumya Joshi is actually an adaptation of his Gujarati play of the same name, where he astutely mounts the banal observation of life as a journey. Also, his conceptualisation of the characters, infused with the right amount of dramatic ingredients inclusive of humour, is what makes this film rise above the regular Hindi films. Slowly and delicately drawing attention and care from the audi-

ence, 102 Not Out, comes to us as a simple story about one family matter. Never disrupting its slow, but steady pace throughout its 102 minutes of run time, it gives us a real slice of life through its intimate human drama filled with over-thetop characters. And, there are many

scenes deeply resonating with empathy and understanding behind its composed but caring attitude. In the beginning, the rhythm of the mundane daily life of septuagenarian Babulal Vakharia (Rishi Kapoor) is established with a concise low-key approach. In direct contrast

to him is his, centenarian father, Dattarey Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan). With his joie-de-vivre demeanor, how he infuses zest into his son’s boring life and makes him realise that life is an uplifting journey and not a trudge, forms the crux of the tale. It both touches the heart and challenges the mind. Through their natural performances, Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor play characters much beyond their years and the dynamics between them are rock solid.

Both are aptly supported by Jimit Trivedi as the errand boy Dhiru, who is a witness to the father-son, love-hate relationship. Jimit is impressive with his subtle but overthe-top performance and he holds his own against the veterans. The first half of the film is rudimentary and you need extra patience to hold on. But the second half, though predictable, steadily builds up emotional momentum. You get absorbed by its assured storytelling and would be frequently touched by several moving gestures of human decency. It is indeed a fiction, but it feels real, through its universal family drama and it gently tells us that we can do better than expected to ourselves, in our life.

EntErtainmEnt entertainment ‘It’s my job to I’m proud of my exotic brown protect Natasha’ color: Diana Hayden x

A

fter Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb questioned the “beauty” of Diana Hayden, the former Miss World slammed the thought that ‘light skin is better’, and said she is proud of her exotic brown skin color. Deb reportedly said in Agartala this week that international beauty contests were a farce as the results were all predetermined. He also said he failed to understand the “process of judgement” of the crowning of the Miss World contest in 1997, in which Diana was crowned. “We see women as goddess Laxmi, Saraswati. Aishwarya Rai represents the Indian women. She became the Miss World and that’s all right. But I do not understand the beauty of Diana Hayden,” Deb said.

A

ctor Varun Dhawan doesn’t talk about his romantic relationship with Natasha Dalal often, but he has not made any effort to hide the fact that he is in one. He says it takes away from his personal life and he feels it is his job to protect her. “Why is it so hard to talk about your relationship?” Varun was asked in an interview for CNNNews18’s “Now Showing”. The actor said: “I feel like it takes away my personal life and that is the only reason I don’t talk about it. Because then (whether) you are in or not in (a relationship), they are going write something here and write something there.”

‘I will not retaliate with violent threats’

T

winkle Khanna believes in taking legal action instead of retaliating with “violent threat” online. “As a society do we really think it’s all right to threaten a woman with bodily harm for trying to raise funds for a charity by auctioning a uniform used in a movie, a piece of film memorabilia. “I will not retaliate with violent threats but by taking legal action,” Twinkle replied to a troll. Twinkle commented on Twitter after being trolled for auctioning National-Award winning actor Akshay Kumar’s naval uniform from the film Rustom.

I have no backing in the film industry: Aditi Rao Hydari

A

ctress Aditi Rao Hydari says she feels thrilled to get support from the people in Bollywood as she has no backing in the film industry. The actress, who has got rave reviews for her role in hit film Padmaavat, spoke about her career in Vogue India’s May 2018 issue. “I have no backing in the film industry. It is thrilling to be supported by people you love and respect. I just choose to keep doing my own thing, as long as I am not hurting anyone,” Aditi said.

Rakhi opens up about casting couch

I enjoy my role as a mother: Padma Lakshmi

I

ndia-born supermodel Padma Lakshmi says raising a child alone is not easy, but she is glad that she has her family’ support. She has a daughter named Krishna Thea Lakshmi-Dell. Asked if raising a child alone is tough, Padma told IANS: “It is difficult but I don’t feel I am raising her alone.” “I have a lot of family members that contribute to her clothes, her education and her relation. I am lucky that I enjoy my role as a mother,” she said.

N

ever one to shy away from calling a spade a shovel, Rakhi Sawant now has a rather startling opinion on the ongoing debate on casting couch and sexual harassment of strugglers in the film industry. Rakhi admits to being a victim. “When I was a struggler, yes I did face the casting couch. But it wasn’t as if every producer or director I approached was guilty. As in every walk of life, there is sexual corruption in the film industry also. As far as I was concerned, this was just in the beginning,” Rakhi said.
