The modus operandi of Kishan to lure actresses was simple and effective – he used many Chicagoland and USA based Telugu Association letterheads, including – TASC , NATS, Telugu Association of North America ( TANA) , Telangana Peoples Association of Dallas (TPAD), Detroit Telugu Association, TLCA for obtaining the visas for actresses. In the letterheads most of the times it was invitation for event, conference, seminar, invited guest, awardee or any other flimsy reason. Telugu Association of Southern California (TAS) star night event in California on November 8, 2017 was also used as bait to obtain US visa.

T
wo senior White House officials blasted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his earlier statements during the just concluded Group of Seven (G7) summit. Trudeau announced last week that all G7 members had endorsed the joint communique; however, he noted that the US tariffs are “insulting” and Canada “will not be pushed around”. The remarks have enraged US President Donald Trump. He tweeted hours later that he had instructed US representatives not to endorse the G7 joint communique “based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our US farmers,
Trump slams actor Robert De Niro WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump slammed veteran Hollywood actor Robert De Niro this week calling the film star “a very low IQ individual”. In a series of Robert De Niro tweets aboard the Air Force One as he returned to the US from Singapore on June 12 night after his historic meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, Trump said: “Robert De Niro, a very low IQ individual, has received to many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be ‘punchdrunk’,” CNN reported. —IANS
Trump trade adviser apologizes for insulting Trudeau WASHINGTON: Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, has apologized after saying “there’s a special place in hell” for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is in a trade dispute with President Donald Trump. “In conveying that message, I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message,” CNN quoted Navarro

Navarro’s comments were part of the White House’s continued criticism of Trudeau after the Prime Minister announced that Canada would impose retaliatory measures to answer Trump’s tariffs and said Canada would not be “pushed around”.
North Korea’s top leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. “He really kind of stabbed us in the back,” he said, adding Trump “is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around on the eve of this... He is not going to permit any show of weakness on
the trip to negotiate with North Korea.” Saying Trudeau’s statements are “amateurish” and “sophomoric” only “for domestic consumption,” Kudlow said it was Trudeau’s remarks that had prompted Trump to pull out of the joint communique. Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro also lashed out at Trudeau’s statements, saying they represent “bad faith.” “There is a special place in hell for any for leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door and that’s what badfaith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference, that’s what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did,” Navarro told Fox News Sunday.
Trump: Biggest enemy of US is fake media IANS, WASHINGTON
P
resident Donald Trump has once again lambasted the “fake” communications media as the country’s “biggest enemy” because of their alleged attempts to “downplay” the results of his recent summit with North Korea. “So funny to watch the Fake News, especially NBC and CNN. They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea. 500 days ago they would have ‘begged’ for this deal-looked like war would break out,” Trump said on Twitter, regarding the time before he came into the White House. “Our Country’s biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!” the President continued, just hours after landing in

Washington after his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore, although its ramifications are not yet clear, Efe
reported. Trump’s meeting with Kim was the first between leaders of the two countries and came after months of heated rhetoric and
mutual military — including nuclear - threats. At their meeting, however, the two leaders agreed to begin the process of denuclearizing North Korea, although the details remain to be worked out in future encounters, and — in a surprising development — Trump promised to end joint US military maneeuvres with South Korea. In addition, Trump invited Kim to the White House, a proposal that the North Korean leader accepted, according to that country’s state-run KCNA news agency. Since he took office, the US president has repeatedly criticized this country’s main media outlets — except for conservative Fox News, for instance — for providing what he says is unfair coverage of his administration, reporting that he has called “fake news.”

Pranab’s message to RSS: Will the hotheads listen? At RSS headquarters, former President Pranab Mukherjee dwelt on how pluralism and tolerance constituted India’s ‘soul’ AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
I
t was an evening of pious homilies at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur where former President and now citizen Pranab Mukherjee was the guest of honor at a valedictory function. While he dwelt on how pluralism and tolerance constituted the “soul” of India, the RSS sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat, expounded on the organization’s vision which extended well beyond the Hindu samaj (society) with which it is usually associated to encompass all the children of Bharat Mata (Mother India). There was no paraya (outsider)
in his view, nor any dushman (enemy). Observers noted that there was no mention of a Hindu rashtra (nation), the leitmotif of the RSS, in Bhagwat’s speech. How difficult a transformation in the attitudes of the average RSS supporter would be might be gauged from the way a saffron commentator on television latched on to Mukherjee’s reference to Muslim “invaders” and British colonizers to note how the former President’s views differed from the benignity of the secularists in associating Muslims with biryani and the British with cakes. Notwithstanding the time it might take for the Hindu Right and the secular camp to evolve some kind of a commonality, it goes with-
out saying that the initiative taken by the RSS to invite a person from the opposing camp, so to say, and also by the latter’s acceptance of the invitation bode well for the country. It will be a matter of relief all around if interaction in Nagpur leads to a reduction in the present atmosphere of bitter polarization. The process might be a long-drawn one considering how for decades the two lines of thought of a composite culture (of Hindus, Muslims and others) on one hand and of cultural nationalism (one people, one nation, one culture) on the other have battled one another. But the endeavor towards a consensus will be worthwhile if only it dissuades an M.P. like Vinay Katiyar

of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from saying that Muslims have no right to live in India or for an arrested suspect to justify the journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder on the grounds that she was anti-Hindu. The test of the Nagpur bonhomie will be to see whether there has been a mollifying impact on the Hindutva hotheads. It has to be remem-

Almost 1,800 girls have been taught at the Udaan innovatory bridge school set up by the Care India project in collaboration with Sarvodaya Ashram in 1999. (Photo: IANS)
I
nside a dimly-lit classroom in this district, with its walls decorated with drawings and paintings made by children, Seema Yadav, 36, is teaching a group of 25 girls who are sitting in a circle in one corner. These are girls who were either never enrolled in school or had to drop out due to various reasons. They are now way behind academically compared to other students of their age. At the Udaan innovatory bridge school of Care India, almost 125 km away from state capital Lucknow, such girls of 10 to 16 years age are taught for 11 months so they could catch up. Every year, nearly 100 girls cover the syllabus of six years within 11 months. These girls then appear for the 5th Grade annual examination, which ensures their admission in any formal school in the state. Almost 1,800 girls have been taught in this preparatory school set up by the Care India project in collaboration with Sarvodaya Ashram in 1999. High dropout rate among girls is a serious concern in India. As per the 2017 Annual Survey of Education Report (ASER), once the eight years of elementary schooling are completed, girls begin to abandon schools in far greater numbers than boys.
bered, however, that although the RSS is the paterfamilias of the saffron brotherhood, there are other organizations - the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal and Hindu Mahasabha and others — which are ardent votaries of a Hindu 'rashtra' by, of and for Hindus where the minorities have to live as second-class citizens.
Educating girls to negotiate life, become change agents For years, a woman in Uttar Pradesh is imparting education to the girls who are either not enrolled in schools or drop out According to the report, while at the primary level, 5.7 percent girls are not enrolled in schools compared to 4.7 percent boys, the enrollment gap widens steadily as they grow. At the secondary level, by the time they turn 18, over 32 percent girls are not enrolled in schools compared to 28 percent boys.
The survey suggests that the predominant reason for girls dropping out is family constraints. The study also reveals that over 70 percent out-of-school youth have mothers who have never been to school. Seema, a resident of Mirzapur district, was just 17 when she first started teaching here to help support her own education. She has
now been associated with this residential school for the past 18 years. Almost every girl in this school has a tragic tale to share: Of domestic violence, poverty, untouchability, discrimination and marginalization which is prevalent in most districts of Uttar Pradesh. Seema is no exception. As a child, she helplessly wit-
nessed the horror of domestic violence for years. She would cower in a corner of her room and watch her jobless father go on a rampage in the house and take out his frustration on her mother. She struggled to get away from that environment and eventually eloped with a man of another caste. However, her struggles were magnified when her husband, Hariram Singh, died of cancer a few years after the couple were married in a Sitarampur court. “My father told me to forget everything and pretend as if I had never married. I told him I would marry again only when he gave me assurance that no domestic violence would happen. He gave me no answer,” she said. “Some incidents you experience as a child leave you shattered throughout your life. I saw terrible things happening at my home that shattered my spirit,” Seema said. When she was a child, there was pressure on her to quit her education and take up odd jobs, but she toiled hard, often trapped between discrimination and poverty. Her resolve eventually prevailed over adversity and she finally managed to graduate and become one of the handful of girls from her village to do so.

Trump-Kim meet just a beginning Mike Pompeo discusses the outcome with Moon
South Korea may suspend military drills with US
IANS, SEOUL
U
S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on June 14 met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in here to discuss the outcome of the historic summit between American President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. According to the South Korean Presidential office, Pompeo told Moon at the start of the meeting that there is still “a great deal of work to do” and that he trusts that both sides will be able to cooperate and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, Efe news reported. Pompeo also said he was “confident that we took a very good, significant step in Singapore” and that the US and North Korea will work together to provide their citizens with the best results. He thanked Moon, who has met with Kim twice since April, for his mediation between North Korea and the US, saying that if it had not been for Moon’s effort, the
SEOUL: South Korea’s presidential office hinted at the possibility of suspending the country’s joint military drills with the US, citing a need to assist denuclearization negotiations with North Korea. “We believe there is a need to consider various ways to further promote dialogue as long as serious discussions are being held between the US and North Korea for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establishment of peace,” spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom told reporters. The remarks came one day after US President Donald Trump said he will stop what he called expensive and provocative “war games” with South Korea as long as the North and the US “negotiated in good faith”.
Trump’s remarks came as a surprise to many in the US and South Korea as the exercises were seen as integral to their alliance and their joint deterrence against possible aggression from the communist North, Yonhap news agency reported. The spokesman claimed it was still not clear what Trump meant by “war games”. “For now, there still is a need to find out the exact meaning and intention of President Trump’s remarks,” he said. Seoul and Washington had long insisted that their joint military drills were strictly defensive. The US currently maintains 28,500 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War. —IANS
Putin to meet N. Korean official
Musharraf barred from elections
MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin was scheduled to meet Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea, here on June 14, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Kim is coming to Moscow to attend the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, Peskov was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. His trip to Russia follows a landmark Singapore summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The US President said that his country will provide security guarantees to Pyongyang, while Kim reaffirmed his commitment to a complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. “The results of this meeting have yet to be analyzed in depth, but the very fact that such a meeting was held and a direct dialogue was started can only be welcomed,” Peskov added. The spokesman reiterated Russia’s position that there was no alternative to political and diplomatic methods of settling the Korean problem. — IANS

talks between Trump and Kim would not have been possible. Moon said he was satisfied with the outcome of the summit and what is most important is that it has allowed the world to escape from the threats of a nuclear war and long-range missiles. P
akistan’s Supreme Court on June 14 withdrew a conditional permission earlier granted to former President Pervez Musharraf to contest the upcoming general election after his counsel informed that the former military chief was unable to return to the country. A four-member bench of the apex court heard the case pertaining to Musharraf ’s return. He requested more time to return to the country, however, the court refused to entertain his requests after granting a day-long extension in the June 13 deadline, Geo News reported. “Musharraf wants to return to the country but cannot owing to the current situation and Eid-ulFitr holidays,” his counsel told the bench during the hearing of a case filed by the former President in 2015 against the rejection of his nomination papers in the 2013 general election. In response, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that “we’ll adjourn the court hearing till indefinite time period, will hold it on your wish”.
Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
The Secretary-General of Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) said that the former Army chief’s legal team will be applying for an extension. “We will request them to set a date after Eid-ul-Fitr. If they agree, Musharraf will return,” Mohammad Amjad Chaudhry told The Express Tribune. Earlier, the court assured Musharraf’s counsel that the for-
mer President would not be arrested upon appearance. It also allowed the returning officers to receive his nomination papers for the upcoming election. However, it had said acceptance of his nomination papers would be subject to the final decision in the present case. of the summit. Trump and Kim had signed an agreement at the end of their summit in which they pledged to open a new chapter of relations, establish peace and work towards North Korea’s complete denuclearization. Pompeo also held talks with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts Kang Kyung-wha and Taro Kono respectively to further discuss the details of the Singapore summit.
UN calls for probe in Kashmir GENEVA: Indian and Pakistani security forces used “excessive” force in both sides of Jammu and Kashmir, killing and wounding civilians since 2016, the UN said on June 14, in a first-ever report calling for an international investigation into alleged violations in the disputed territory. The 49-page report issued by the UN on the human rights situation in “Indian-Administered and Pakistan-Administered Kashmir”, detailed human rights violations and abuses on both sides of the Line of Control and highlighted a “situation of chronic impunity for violations committed by security forces”. “It is a conflict that has robbed millions of their basic human rights and continues to this day to inflict untold suffering,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein. India, however, rejected the report as “fallacious, tendentious and motivated”. “We question the intent in bringing out such a report,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

popular Indian restaurant here has fired its head chef, Indian-origin celebrity chef Atul Kochhar, following his “anti-Islam tweet”. Michelin-star chef Atul Kochhar of the Rang Mahal restaurant at the JW Marriot Marquis hotel received flak after taking a dig at actress Priyanka Chopra for her tweet over a Quantico episode that portrayed Hindu nationalists as terrorists. Kochhar’s anti-Islam tweet created a furore on social media, with twitterati calling for his sacking. “Following the recent comments made by Chef Atul Kochhar, we have taken the decision to end our agreement with him for Rang Mahal. With the termination of our agreement, Chef Atul will no longer be associated with the restaurant,” JW Marriot Marquis Hotel said in a statement cited by Gulf News. “At the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai we pride ourselves on creating a culture of diversity and

for my tweet, a major error made in the heat of the moment. I fully recognize my inaccuracies that Islam was founded around 1,400 years ago and I sincerely apologize. I am not Islamophobic, I deeply regret my comments that have offended many.” The chef told Gulf News this week that he was “deeply upset” by the
Dubai hotel’s decision. “The decision by JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is deeply upsetting. However I fully accept the great pain I have caused and the difficult position the hotel has been put in. “I have great respect for JW Marriott and in particular their staff in Dubai and wish the hotel well for the future. I hope my friends and well-wishers in Dubai will forgive me and continue to support me in the future,” he said. Kochhar faced the wrath of social media users with a call to boycott his restaurants after he criticized Chopra on Twitter who had posted an apology of her own for offending her fans over the recent Quantico episode. In Kochhar’s now deleted tweet, the chef responded to Chopra’s mea culpa, writing: “It’s sad to see that you have not respected the sentiments of Hindus who have been terrorized by Islam over 2,000 years. Shame on you.” Following the swift online backlash, Kochhar retracted his tweet. According to the hotel, the restaurant will continue to operate without the chef’s affiliation.

n order to create a stronger deterrent for NRIs who have abandon their wives in India, the Ministry of External Affairs will now display the summons to such men on their official website, an official said this week. The decision was taken among other legal solutions for redressing the issues faced by women in NRI marriages at a meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM), under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and attended by officials from the External Affairs, Law and Justice and Women and Child Development Ministry. “We (Women and Child Development Ministry) are grateful to Rajnath Singh, (External Affairs Minister) Sushma Swaraj and (Law and Justice Minister) Ravi Shankar Prasad for enumerating fine details on ways to resolve the issue of NRI marriages,” said the Women and Child Development Ministry in a tweet. “We are working towards putting in place an efficient mech-

anism that will provide immediate relief to women in troubled NRI marriages,” it added. However, according to sources, the Law Ministry previously did not approve of displaying the summons of NRI marriages on the MEA website and also clashed with the Women and Child Development Ministry over impounding passports and confiscation of the property of those NRI husbands
who have been found guilty of deserting their wives and failed to appear in the court. Last month, the External Affairs Ministry has revoked passports of five NRIs against whom Look-outCirculars (LoC) were issued by Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) - an inter-ministerial body headed by Women and Child Development Secretary Rakesh Srivastava, formed to deal with matrimonial disputes.
The Women and Child Development Ministry had earlier said that it has received 40 cases related to matrimonial disputes relating to NRIs, of which six were found to be serious and LoC issued. Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi also pitched for issuing orders for registering NRI marriages with 48 hours else the visa or passport of the husbands will not be issued. According to the ministry, in criminal matters involving NRIs, the LoC can be issued by the investigating agency in cognisable offenses when the overseas husband is deliberately evading arrest or not appearing in the trial court despite non-bailable warrants and other coercive measures, or there is a likelihood that he will leave the country to evade trial or arrest.

Congress wrests Bengaluru’s Jayanagar seat from BJP Polling was held since elections to the seat were countermanded following the death of BJP contestant B.N. Vijaya Kumar on May 4 IANS, BENGALURU
K
arnataka’s ruling coalition partner Congress this week wrested the high-profile Jayanagar Assembly constituency from the opposition BJP, with its candidate Sowmya Reddy winning by a slender margin of 2,889 votes. Of the total 1,11,580 votes polled, Sowmya secured 54,457 votes against 51,568 by Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) B.N. Prahlad, a poll official told IANS. Polling was held on June 11 since elections to the seat were countermanded following the death of BJP contestant B.N. Vijaya Kumar on May 4, ahead of the May 12 assembly election. The BJP fielded Kumar’s younger brother Prahlad, 57, in the fray against Sowmya, 35, daughter of former state Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who also won from the neighbouring BTM Layout segment. Withdrawal of Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) candidate Kalegowda from the fray on June 5 in support of Congress made it easier for Sowmya to take on Prahlad and 17 other contestants. Board of India (AWBI), she has been a member of the youth and women wings of the Congress’ state unit. Sowmya is the lone woman legislator from Bengaluru’s 28 assembly segments and the youngest first-time lawmaker in the state. With Sowmya’s win, Congress
has five women legislators in the 225-member Assembly, as against three from the BJP and none from the ruling coalition partner JD-S. Jubilant scenes were witnessed at Reddy’s home, while the BJP’s state unit office was forlorn. Prahlad said he would continue to work for the constituency despite the defeat. “Democracy has its ups and downs. Setbacks give an opportunity to become stronger. Myself and BJP will continue to work for the people of Jayanagar. We will rise again, sooner than most think! Congratulations to Congress and Sowmya Reddy,” he tweeted. According to a poll analyst, Sowmya’s win was because of her connect with the young voters. “She (Sowmya) won because many new and young electorate voted for her and withdrawal of JD-S candidate benefitted her, as secular votes did not get split between Congress and JD-S,” the analyst told IANS. With wins in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru southwest on May 31 and Jayanagar, the Congress tally in the assembly has gone up to 79, as against 36 of JD-S and 104 of BJP. Of the 28 seats in Bengaluru, Congress has 15, BJP 11 and JD-S 2.
Sudheeran attacks Chandy again THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The anger in the Congress over the gifting away of a Rajya Sabha seat to Kerala Congress (Mani) continued this week, Oommen Chandy with former party president V.M. Sudheeran lashing out at former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for a third day in succession. Addressing reporters for close to two hours, Sudheeran said that Chandy always took a stand which portrayed a sense of “cruel helplessness” and added that Chandy was the least happy when he (Sudheeran) became the party President in 2015. “When I met him after I was named the President, his body language revealed everything. It has continued all through. I was treated with disdain by him even when he came to inaugurate two state-wide yatras,” said Sudheeran. He added that giving away the Rajya Sabha seat to K.M. Mani was a “Himalayan blunder”. Sudheeran was appointed the President by the Congress in 2015 as he was keeping away from active party politics since he was defeated in the 2004 Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency. At that time Chandy was the Chief Minister (2011-16) and their relationship worsened ever since Sudheeran, with just six months left for the 2016 Assembly polls, went hammer and tongs against Chandy and his governance. — IANS
Split verdict in 18 MLAs disqualification case in TN IANS, CHENNAI
I
n a breather to the AIADMK government, the Madras High Court on June 14 gave a split verdict in the case of disqualification of 18 rebel-AIADMK MLAs. Chief Justice Indira Banerjee upheld the disqualification of the 18 legislators ordered by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal while companion judge Justice M. Sundar held that the Speaker’s decision was invalid. Justice Banerjee said in view of the contradicting judgements, the case will now be transferred to a third judge. The Chief Justice made it clear that she will not decide on the third judge and that decision will be taken by a senior judge. Justice Kuluvadi Ramesh is most likely to decide the name of the third judge.
Maintaining status quo, the court also said till the case is finally decided, no by-elections should be held. The Chief Justice in her judgement said the Speaker’s decision could not be called unreasonable and need not be interfered with by the court. On the other hand, Justice Sundar said he differed with the Chief Justice and cited a Supreme Court judgement to say that the High Court can interfere in the order of the Speaker which was not within the confines of law. Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker Dhanapal had disqualified 18 legislators after they met the Governor and gave a memorandum expressing loss of confidence in Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and requested him to appoint a new Chief Minister.
The case filed by the disqualified legislators against the Speaker’s action is pending before the High Court since September, 2017. The court had reserved the judgement on January 24. Hours before the judgement, Tamil Nadu Advocate General Vijay Narayanan met Palaniswami. Earlier in the day, the disqualified law makers met sidelined AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran and discussed the steps to be taken ahead. As per the party position in Tamil Nadu assembly, the ruling AIADMK has 116 members followed by DMK-89, Congress-8, IUML-1, Independent-1, the Speaker and 18 vacant seats, totalling 234. Besides, there is one nominated member. In April, in a different case, the Madras High Court had said it

could not interfere in the Assembly Speaker’s domain. On April 27, the court dismissed a petition seeking disqualification of 11 AIADMK legislators, including Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, for voting against the government during a confidence motion moved by Palaniswami last year. Dismissing the petition filed by DMK Whip R. Sakkarapani, the court said it could not interfere in the Assembly Speaker’s domain.
The court said it had the power of judicial review of decisions taken but could not interfere in a matter where the Speaker had not taken a decision. It also referred to a case pending in the Supreme Court on a similar issue arising from Andhra Pradesh. The disqualification petition was filed against 11 AIADMK legislators for voting against the confidence motion on Palaniswami government on February 18, 2017, defying the party whip.

U
S President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jongun took a pledge to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security guarantees for Pyongyang during their landmark summit here this week, ushering in the start of a new era that could break a cycle of nuclear brinkmanship and stave off a military confrontation. “Chairman Kim has before him an opportunity like no other to be remembered as the leader who ushered in a glorious new era of prosperity for his people,” Trump said at a news conference in Singapore following more than four hours of talks with Kim. “He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the US leader said, adding that Kim also agreed to destroy a missile site in North Korea. “We’re ready to write a new chapter between our nations.” Earlier on the day of the Singapore Summit, Trump and Kim met at the Capella Hotel on Singapore’s resort island of Sentosa and signed a pact committing to work towards the development of fresh relations and promote “peace, prosperity and security” in the region. “President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to North Korea and Chairman Kim reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the agreement said. Trump said he would push for North Korea to denuclearize as “fast as it can mechanically” but added it could take a long time. He said that sanctions on North Korea would be removed “when we are sure the nukes are no longer a factor”. The US leader said the summit marked a “great moment in the history of the world” and stressed that denuclearization would be
Kim accepts Trump’s invitation to visit US PYONGYANG: North Korean leader Kim Jongun has accepted US President Donald Trump’s invitation to visit Washington after their historic summit in Singapore, Pyongyang state media reported this week. North Korea not a threat any more: Trump WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that the world should feel “safer” because North Korea poses no nuclear threat to the world. “Everybody can feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea,” tweeted Trump. “Meeting with Kim Jong-un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future!” the US President wrote, adding that “there is no longer a nuclear threat from Pyongyang”. “Before taking office, people were assuming that we were going to war with North Korea. President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most dangerous problem. verifiable by international and US experts. Trump and the north Korean leader agreed to have follow-on negotiations led by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a senior North Korean official. Trump also said joint military exercises with South Korea would be halted, which he described as “too expensive”. He said he had agreed to stop the “war games” because he considers them “very provocative” and said it would save the US “a tremendous amount of money”. The war games would not be revived “unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should”, Trump said, adding that he believed his North Korean counterpart would live up to the agreement. Trump said he hopes to eventually withdraw US forces from South Korea, but said “that’s not part of the equation right now”. Pyongyang and Washington agreed to commit to recovering the remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action during the 1950-53 Korean War, including an immediate repatriation of those already identified. Korea’s brutal human rights record, which Trump had slammed in 2017 after the death of US college student Otto Warmbier, who was held captive in Pyongyang for 17 months and then released in a coma. The University of Virginia student died days after he was flown home to his family in Ohio. Trump said human rights issues were raised, but he did not give details. He said Warmbier “did not die in vain”. After the announcement on the joint exercises by Trump, South Korea’s presidential office said: “We need to try to understand what President Trump said.” However, a spokesman for South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that South Korea understood the need to try to make progress in North Korea’s relations with the US. “We believe we need to pursue various measures to efficiently move the dialogue forward during serious ongoing talks to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and to establish good relations between North Korea and the US,” the spokesman said. India welcomed the Singapore meeting and described it as a “positive development”. “We hope that the outcomes of the USDPRK Summit will be implemented, thus paving the way for lasting peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula,” said the External Affairs Ministry. China said that sanctions against Pyongyang could be eased if it complies with the UN resolution. “China has consistently held that sanctions are not the goal in themselves. The Security Council’s actions should support and conform to the efforts of current diplomatic talks towards denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, and promote a political solution for it.” Trump said he had formed a “very special bond” with Kim and that the relationship with North Korea would be very different in the future”.

SEX WITH STARLETS FROM SOUTH INDIAN CINEMA A global human sex trafficking by a small time film producer/pimp of India to Chicago, USA BY AJAI AGNIHOTRI
C
Chennu alias Raju alias Kishan Modugumudi (34), ill-famed small time Telugu film producer from Hyderabad brought his illicit business of prostitution by small time Tollywood (Hyderabad Film Industry) actresses to Chicago. He went global in his pimping business. Both of them are charged for aiding and abetting by one another, did directly and indirectly import into the USA five victims, for the purpose of prostitution and other immoral purposes, and keep, maintain, control, support, employ and harbor victims in their residence and in other places, in pursuance of illegal importation. The criminal complaint filed against Modugumudi and his wife was unusual because sex crimes charged in federal court typically involve child victims or women sold into sexual slavery, not traditional prostitution Kishan also known as Chennu and Raju along with his wife Chandrakala Purnima Modugumudi (31) also known as Vibha Madam or Vibha Jayam in Telugu speaking circle of Chicagoland area. He arrived in Chicago on April 06, 2015 for his nefarious activities and to set up a sex shop in Chicago. His wife arrived Chandrakala worked as madam /go getter/escort/facilitator/ administrator of sex shop and between Actresses/sex provider and prospective customers. Kishan Modugumudi began his career in India as an office boy in the Telugu film industry and slowly became a production assistant. He then became a distributor and a producer in time. Initially he worked with legends such as K.S.Rama Rao. In 1999, he began a six-year long association with director Nagesh Kukunoor, working on films such as Hyderabad Blues, Rockford, Bollywood Calling and studying the industry. Later, he allegedly associated himself with Srinu Vytla and Ravi Teja to work on blockbusters such as Dhee, Venky and Dubai Seenu. He started the ‘Aadya Group of Companies’ to work
in distribution, production of telefilms and in real estate. While these were his ‘official’ businesses, his reality was altogether different. Kishan Modugumudi is accused of duping young Telugu girls in the name of opportunities and luring them to the USA to ‘supply’ them to certain prominent people. To put simply, he was a high level pimp, who forced many an innocent girl into prostitution. He carried this out by keeping in touch with some Telugu associations in the USA. This exposure of sex racket started from an Indian actress arriving at Chicago Airport on Dec 24, 2017 on a flight from India via Abu Dhabi and she spilled the beans of this forceful sex trafficking. She arrived on B1/B2 visa, told customs agents she had come to the U.S. to attend an Indian association event at the behest of her manager and would be staying only a couple weeks. Federal prosecutors say that story was a ruse concocted by the actress’ manager. And he wasn’t helping her with her film career — he was her pimp. Federal charges which is 42 pages long was un sealed in Chicago last week charges Kishan and his wife Vibha running a high-end prostitution ring to lure actresses from Tollywood — a nickname for the lively Telugu-language film scene in southern India — to the U.S. and advertise them for sex at Indian conferences and cultural events across the country. The charges for sexual acts were ranging from $1,000 / 1-2 hrs. to $3,000/- for two acts and 3-4 hrs. of sexual acts, according to criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago. While here on temporary visas, at least five actresses identified in Charge sheet as A, B, C, D & E, were sometimes forced to stay in a dingy, two-story apartment building in 5701 W Belden St, Chicago, IL apartments 1 E and 1 W waiting for their next “date,” the charges alleged. They also met clients in hotels at conferences in Dallas, New Jersey and Washington and Comfort Inn & Suites in Schiller Park area of O’Hare Airport.
The prostitution scheme was allegedly masterminded by Kishan Mo dugumudi, 34, an Indian businessman who rose to become a player in the Tollywood movie industry and co-produced several films. T h e c omp l ai nt a l l e ge d t h at Modugumudi called and threatened the life of one of the actresses and her family if she told law enforcement the truth about what she did while in USA. Modugumudi told the woman, identified in the charges only as Victim A, that “it would be nothing for him to harm her if she talked to the police about him because she is small and unknown, not a big actress,” the complaint alleged. “(He) further stated he had a copy of her passport with her family’s name and address in it.” Also charged was Modugumudi’s wife, Chandra, 31, who allegedly kept detailed ledgers of the sex acts performed by each girl, including where they occurred how many times and how much they collected. Federal agents discovered the five ledgers when they searched the Modugumudi’s’ apartment in the 5701 West Belden Avenue in February, according to the complaint. They also found more than 70 condoms divided up into “multiple Ziploc bags.” Federal Agents later obtained a search warrant for Kishan Modugumudi’s email accounts and discovered a note written by Victim A in December begging him to stop harassing and threatening her, according to the complaint. “Please do not call me and don’t try to contact me,” the woman allegedly wrote. “It was very unpleasant doing business with you and I don’t want to do any business with you now or in future. If you try contacting me again, I’ll have to make formal complaint.” Kishan and Chandra have been in federal custody since their arrest on April 30, 2018 in suburban Washington DC. They have been transported to Chicago jail and are held there. The couple’s two school-aged children, meanwhile, are in the custody of child welfare officials in Virginia.
The charges reveal that at least 5 actresses were forced to stay in dingy apartments, waiting for their next ‘date’, with ‘clients’ being charged up to $3000 for these sexual encounters. Their main ‘customers’ would be found at Indian conferences and cultural events across the US. The women were reportedly promised better job offers and lucrative film roles. This also comes months after Sri Reddy, a television anchor-turnedactress, had created a sensation by resorting to strip protest against casting couch, a euphemism for sexual harassment, in Tollywood in front of the office of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce in Hyderabad on April 7. Modugumudi and his wife have been in federal custody since agents arrested them in late April in suburban Washington, D.C., on a warrant, records show. Later on they were transported to Chicago jail. At a detention hearing last week in federal court in Chicago, the couple, dressed in jail clothes, listened to the proceedings through a Telugu interpreter. Attorney Molly Armour, who represents Kishan Modugumudi, told the judge she had been trying to find a place for the couple to live so they could be freed on bail but that so far she had been unsuccessful. U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez ordered them to remain in custody for the time being. The couple’s two school-age children, meanwhile, are in the custody of child welfare officials in Virginia. Tollywood also has long been criticized as a haven for traffickers who use promises of stardom to trap aspiring young actresses in the sex trade, they are forced into prostitution every year, many lured by opportunities to model or act in films, according to Reuters. According to a 2010 story on Slate. com, “savvy pimps” also play off the sexual imagery in Tollywood films to “create a market for B-list and C-list ‘starlets’ — often unsuccessful actresses from questionable backgrounds — for

QQThe exorbitant prices paid by customers in the range of $1,000 to $3,000 for one hour to three hour is indication that illegal activities involve higher earnings and there are always payer available for that amount. QQMany Telugu organizations including NATS (North America Telugu Society), TASC (Telugu Association of Southern California), TANA (Telugu Association of North America), TPAD (Telangana Peoples Association of Dallas), Indian Telugu Association – Gaithersburg, Mar yland, Telugu Association of Missouri were mentioned and their event and letterheads were used to obtain visa for USA. The Presidents / Concerned officials of Associations were contacted/interviewed or otherwise questioned about event, letterheads and about Kishan and Vibha. The six short dramas were made by some of Tollywood’s biggest production houses as part of an initiative by an anti-trafficking charity and the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad.
Reports of the investigation into Modugumudi’s alleged prostitution ring have been reported in several Telugu and English-language web sites that cover the Telugu cinema. Many customers when interviewed by authorities and questioned about how they found out about sex for sale available in Chicago. One of them informed that Vibha Jayam was known and popular in Telugu speaking

community, especially in Chicagoland area- Vibha is a woman whom to go to or contact regarding having sex with South Indian actresses. In this case, some of the alleged victims of the scheme appeared less than cooperative when questioned by U.S. authorities — including Victim A, who claimed that she never actually had sex with clients but just spent time with them and “asked for help.” A client interviewed as part of the investigation also tried to mislead agents by saying he’d had conversations with Modugumudi’s wife — whom he knew as “Vibha Jayam” — about “the price to have sex with actresses” but never actually went through with the proposition, according to the complaint. That client, identified as Individual G, later acknowledged meeting Chandra Modugumudi in the lobby of the Comfort Suites at O’Hare in 2016 and paying her $1,110 in cash to have sex with an actress who was staying in one of the rooms there, according to the complaint. In addition to emails discussing the scheme, authorities uncovered dozens of text messages from Chandra’s phone in which she appeared to haggle with clients over which girls were available and the prices for each, according to the complaint. Often, she would send photos of an actress available for a date while negotiating. One text convers at ion f rom December 2016 showed that after Chandra sent photos of one girl to a potential client, he responded, “For me?” with a smiley face emoticon, according to the complaint. In another conversation, an actress working for the prostitution ring, identified as Victim D, texted to Chandra that she had just finished performing oral sex on a client. “He is very happy,” Victim D wrote, according to the complaint. “Ok,” Chandra replied, adding a “thumbs up” emoji. In his operation Sex with Starlets, Kishan / Raju/Nagaraju or many other names was well equipped for his solicitation of victim and customer. When he was arrested along with his wife was having four telephones ending in 3114, 6887, 6167 & 7176. A fake Green Card (Resident Alien Card) and fake Social Security Card in the name of Kishan Modugumudi was found in his apartment in Chicago, IL. While it is worth to note that within a span of one year Nov 2016 to Dec 31, 2017 – Kishan obtained driving license based on fraudulent documents and driving a Toyota Avalon while arrested in Ohio and Virginia. It is also interesting to note that Chandrakala / Vibha kept a meticulous record of all the sex transaction in detail in five journals maintained by her. It was mentioned as Ledger of Prostitution. The entries include the name of sex services provider, place – City and Hotel, room number, amount paid and the name of sexual favor seeker and how the payment was made. The modus operandi of Kishan to lure actresses was simple and effective – he used many Chicagoland and USA based Telugu Association letterheads, including – TASC , NATS, Telugu Association of North America ( TANA) , Telangana Peoples Association
19
of Dallas (TPAD), Detroit Telugu Association, TLCA for obtaining the visas for actresses. In the letterheads most of the times it was invitation for event, conference, seminar, invited guest, awardee or any other flimsy reason. Telugu Association of Southern California (TAS) star night event in California on November 8, 2017 was also used as bait to obtain US visa. Federal agent also seized copies of a letter written by the American Telugu Association (ATA) to the US consul general at Hyderabad requesting visa for specific individuals. Within a span of one year Nov 2016 to Nov 2018 – 72 domestic air travel tickets were booked by Kishan and 42 hotel rooms reservations were made for starlets to provide commercial sex services. It reflects the wide spread network of commercial sex seekers all over USA. After actresses arrived in USA they were received by Kishan and were lodged in Chicago residence of Kishan at Balden Ave. From here they were photographed and their advertisement was made on social media and the photos of actresses were sent to prospective clients. The operation of advertising, obtaining customer, negotiating prices and escorting them to motels, receiving fees was taken care by Vibha/ Chandrakala. Federal Agents also obtained the text messages transactions between Vibha/ Kishan and customer of Indian descent. In some of the text messages customers is bargaining, seeking lower prices on the pretext of being poor or otherwise. In this it also worth mentioning that around twelve years back Chicago had seen the spurt in bar dancers from Mumbai arrived in big numbers and it was organized in couple of hotel/ motels owned by Indian/Pakistani descendants. They came on temporary tourist visa and were lured to dance in shanty /dingy places and were lodged in Lincolnwood, IL area. The exotic and frolic dances were organized on daily basis for months in a row. Whereas it was also rumored in community that the dancers were also involved in providing sexual favors. After many drunken brawls, financial rip off of dance customers and other social issues this Mumbai Bar style dancing was stopped. With this saga of sex scandal, global human trafficking for sex, forceful sexual slavery many other points have arisen.. Online media is full of shameful comments f rom community on hearing this including an outburst on associations-Advaiti advaiti-June 14, 2018 This is suspected in USA, when these linguistic based organizations and their committees conduct large scale international festivals. They should be apprehended. There are many who are permanent residents and citizens of Indian origin, stay in administrative position, and secretly perform these acts. They also have strong connections with political parties and people in India. Unfortunately these politicians cannot wield their influence in US and get kicked out! What a shame!

Dizziness and balance disorders, anyone? BY RUPANGI PATEL HICAGO, IL -- Dizziness and balance disorders can affect anyone-- young or old--but the resulting impairments vary considerably. In order to help you decide whether to seek help for a dizzy spell, ask yourself the following questions. If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, seek help: --A constant sense of dizziness, wooziness, or unstableness that is intensified by performing everyday activities such as walking, rolling over in bed, or glancing around a room. --Inability to walk independent of assistance from people or objects. --Continual falls or stumbles while performing normal, everyday activities. --Symptoms of dizziness and balance disorders such as these make performing simple, everyday tasks stressful, and fulfilling job responsibilities even more taxing. Fear of falling: Many older people experience something that may be more common than actually experiencing an injury from a fall. Their fear of falling means that they lack the self-confidence to perform their every day, normal activities. This may be due to a history of falls, but some people who have never fallen also suffer from the fear of falling. Fear of falling can lead to avoidance of activities. Sometimes restricting certain activities can improve your safety, such as avoiding step stools or ladders. However, activity restriction can mean that you avoid activities that you could perform safely.
C
Falls and Impaired Mobility: This is a serious problem for our aging population. The good news is that much of the decline in balance can be reversed through a program of balance training. One study found that healthy people as old as 90 can reduce the tendency to fall by 50 per cent: --It’s not hard to see that this can help keep people independent and mobile far longer, as well as reduce their risk of injury. At Physical Therapy Solution, our physical therapists work to prevent injuries by identifying individuals who are at risk for falls: --A comprehensive physical therapy fall evaluation is performed that includes: a thorough history, muscle strength evaluation,
balance assessment, and functional mobility assessment. The treatments consist of balance training, endurance/strength training, and education on how falls can be prevented. Ultimately, we transition their program into the home environment for long-term benefits. Dizziness Treatment: The great news is that, once identified, most dizziness disorders can be successfully treated. Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. Assisted with a medical history from your doctor, we can perform specific tests to determine your ability to maintain your balance as well as your risk of falling. Our computerized equilibrium tests can evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system. Sensory tests assess inner ears, eyes and sense of touch in your feet and joints that contribute to balance control. Our motor tests will measure your ability to execute coordinated movements, both voluntary and involuntary, to maintain your balance. All of these tests will help define the cause of your balance problem and are the foundation of devising a unique, individualized program for you. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our balance therapy programs have a 98% balance improvement success rate. (Rupangi Patel PT, co-founder/CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions Group, is a physical therapist with more than 30 years of experience gleaned over two continents.)

SAHAVE’s Platform for Social Change BY A STAFF WRITER APERVILLE, IL -- SAHAVE announced the official global launch of The Platform for Social Change at a byinvitation-only reception at the Sheraton Naperville. Five years in the making, the dream of its founder and CEO Pradeep Kandimalla is now a reality with the global launch of the first two of 32 modules as well as four applications supporting them. Kandimalla stated, “There is great need in the world for social change, where neighbors help neighbors, as they did long ago, when there were no charities. People relied on their neighbors when things got difficult, and SAHAVE is designed to bring communities together through non-profits, and NGOs, and cutting-edge technology.” The Global Launch Reception held at the Naperville Sheraton gave invited guests a glimpse into the platform and its ease of use, impressive flexibility and power to change lives through advanced tech not available anywhere else in the world. SAHAVE brings together individuals, education institutions, businesses and non-profits. Each can impact their local communities through collaboration and mutual goals for a better community and the world. Many charitable organizations in the US struggle to survive and fail to fully execute their missions due to inadequate financial and human capital. Of some 1.5 million tax-exempt organizations registered in 2016-70% of them public charities--66% of those had less than $500,000 in annual donations. Many earned less than $50,000 a year and operated with systems and staffing unable to serve their populations or allow them to grow to their full potential. A new
N
digital platform now being tested promises to improve both by connecting these small to mid-size charities with individuals, businesses and institutions that can support them. “I’ve committed my life to serving my communities and individuals who need help,” Kandimalla said. “With SAHAVE we’ve created a platform that will revolutionize the way non-profits operate. It will help them become more efficient, grow capacity, and improve sustainability.” Called SAHAVE (Sa-ha’-vay), the mobile-first application platform is being
developed by an international team of technology, business and non-governmental organization experts in the US and India who are creating a way for organizations to effectively engage their communities in real time to communicate their needs, coordinate volunteer efforts, raise funds and execute mission strategies. SAHAVE is a suite of integrated application software modules that link nonprofits with individuals, businesses and educational institutions. It will provide a single, real-time mobile platform for everyone in the community
service system. Initially, SAHAVE will offer free applications to build brand awareness and relationships, and to demonstrate the value of the system. Each user group can also implement additional modules including sponsor management, donor management, social media integration, volunteer management, grant management and predictive modeling, among others, for an affordable fee. The software will first be available this year in the US and India with plans for global expansion in late 2019.

FIFA World Cup starts with colorful ceremony Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the large, multi-ethnic and harmonious world football family IANS, MOSCOW
R
ussian President Vladimir Putin declared the FIFA World Cup open after a colorful opening ceremony at the 81,000seater Luzhniki Stadium on June 14. “The love of football unites the world in one team, independent of language or ideology,” the Russian president stated during his speech, as reported by Sputnik news agency. Putin said he hoped fans, players and officials enjoy their stay in Russia during the World Cup, reports Xinhua news agency. “Football is truly loved here and it is called love at first sight, since our first official match here in 1897,” Putin said. “I hope fans and teams enjoy their stay in Russia, an open, hospitable and friendly country with
AICF respects Soumya’s decision over headscarf CHENNAI: The All India Chess Federation (AICF) respects Indian Women Grandmaster (WGM) Soumya Swaminathans decision to opt out of the forthcoming Asian Nations Cup Chess Championship 2018 to be held in Iran as she does not want to be forced to wear a headscarf, said a top official. “It is her personal choice and decision. We do not have anything against it. We will find a replacement for her,” AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan told IANS this week. “The FIDE the world chess body’s stance is to abide by the local laws, culture and traditions. Similarly, AICF will also abide by FIDE’s stance. And players are free to take their own decision,” Chauhan added. Reacting to the development, WGM Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman told IANS: “It is Soumya’s personal choice. I respect that. She has not said anything against anybody or any body.” Subbaraman said even Saudi Arabia has similar rule-compulsory wearing of headscarf but had exempted that when the World Championship was held there in 2017. “I had played in that tournament and did not wear the headscarf there,” Subbaraman said. —IANS
Russia thrash Saudi by 5-0 MOSCOW: Hosts Russia began their FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, registering an easy 5-0 victory over minnows Saudi Arabia in a Group A game at the 81,000-seater Luzhniki Stadium. Yuri Gazinskiy (12th minute), Denis Cheryshev (43rd, 90+1), Artem Dzyuba (71st) and Aleksandr Golovin (90+4) scored for the hosts, who enjoyed a near-perfect first day. They overcame the injury suffered by forward Alan Dzagoev in the middle of the first half. But his substitute Cheryshev scored a brace and young Golovin made two assists and a goal to more than make up for

afael Nadal of Spain powered past Austrian Dominic Thiem in straight sets to clinch his record-extending 11th men’s singles title at the French Open tennis championships on June 10. Following his 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory, Nadal became the second player in history to have won 11 singles titles at any Grand Slam
event after Margaret Court, who won 11 Australian Open titles, reported Xinhua news agency. He also became the first player in the Open Era to have won 11 titles at three different Tour-level events, as he had done at ATP Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open. Nadal, who led 6-3 in previous head-to-heads, broke Thiem’s service in the second game, before the Austrian had his own response to

tie at 2-all through a break. Thiem was the only player to have defeated Nadal on clay prior to Roland Garros for the second straight year, and his quarterfinal victory over Nadal at the Madrid
match that was played in Russia in 1897,” Putin added. “We were making preparations for hosting this grandiose event with responsibility and we did our utmost to let the fans, athletes and specialists to get immersed in the atmosphere of a marvelous football festival and, of course, to enjoy their stay in Russia — an open and hospitable country, and to make new friends and associates.” Masters snapped the Spaniard’s 50set winning streak on clay. He displayed his lethal weapon of single-handed backhand, while being troubled by unfavorable performance on his first serves, conceding the first set 6-4. Thiem already suffered four double faults despite four aces at the start of the second set, while Nadal maintained all of his serves in the second set to move a step further at 6-3. Thiem save three break points to hold his service into the third set, but the “King of Clay” responded by fully exhibiting his powerful forehand for astute winners. The Austrian was hampered by his many unforced errors after long rallies.
India beat Kenya by 2-0 to lift Intercontinental Cup IANS, MUMBAI
S
kipper Sunil Chhetri continued his superb form, striking a brace as India thrashed Kenya 2-0 to clinch the Intercontinental Cup at the Mumbai Football Arena on June 10. Chhetri, who scored in the eighth and 29th minutes to hand India a convincing victory, also equalled Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s tally of 64 international goals, making him the joint-second active international goalscorer behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (81 goals). With the stadium jam-packed

with Indian fans, the hosts started on an aggressive note as they penetrated the Kenyan defense twice in
the first minute. The hosts took an early lead when a free kick from Anirudh Thapa was flicked per-
fectly by skipper Sunil Chhetri into the net. After conceding the goal, Kenya regrouped and started to counter-attack. Jockins Atudo, who scored twice in the last match, was not too effective on Sunday thanks to some brilliant marking by the Indian defenders. Unpetrubed by the Kenyan pressing, India continued playing offensively and as a result Chhetri scored with a superb finish just before the half hour mark to double India’s lead. Defender Anas Edathodika lofted a long ball and Chhetri beat the offside trap to chest-trap the ball before slamming an accurate leftfooter low into the far corner.

‘QUANTICO’ SPARKS CONTROVERSY The executive producers of Priyanka Chopra-starrer Quantico extends an apology, saying they regret stepping into ‘a complex political issue’ and don’t intend to offend anyone IANS, LOS ANGELES
Priyanka Chopra apologizes too...

BC Studios, the executive producers of Priyanka Chopras show Quantico, has extended an apology to fans who were offended by an episode of the show which portrayed Indian nationalists as terrorists who were trying to frame Pakistan in a terror plot. They said that they regret stepping into “a complex political issue”, and they didn’t intend to offend anyone. The episode, entitled The Blood of Romeo, aired on June 1. In it, Priyanka’s character, FBI agent Alex Parrish, thwarts a terror plot just days before a summit between India and Pakistan is to be held, reports Hollywoodreporter.com. During her investigations, Parrish finds a religious Hindu symbol — a Rudraksh chain — on the neck of one of the suspects leading her to conclude that the plot was
BRIEFS Mumbai blaze: Deepika safe MUMBAI: Firemen succeeded in controlling a major blaze in the top floors of the 33-storey Beaumonde Towers after battling the leaping flames for nearly five hours and evacuating more than 90 residents on June 13 evening. However, at least two firemen suffered from suffocation and were rushed to a hospital. Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who lives in the same building on the 26th floor, tweeted that she was safe and expressed her prayers for the well-being of the firefighters.
Bourdain’s show to run on Netflix LOS ANGELES: Anthony Bourdains popular travel and food docuseries “Parts Unknown” will continue to be available on Netflix in the US, but the show is not available on the online streaming giant in India. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown had been scheduled to leave Netflix US on June 16 when the streaming platform’s license deal for the show expired. Following Bourdain’s death by suicide, fans had been petitioning Netflix to keep the series on the platform, reports deadline.com. Netflix had been working on hammering out an extension. —IANS

devised by Indian nationalists to frame Pakistan in a nuclear terror attack. Some fans of the show were upset with the portrayal of Indians in the plot and took to Twitter to express their views. In fact, many
fans slammed Priyanka for the track. ABC Studios clarified that Priyanka had no role in writing or directing the show: The statement read: “ABC Stu-
MUMBAI: Priyanka Chopra has apologized for an episode in her American TV series Quantico which portrayed Indian nationalists as terrorists who were trying to frame Pakistan in a terror plot. “I’m extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of ‘Quantico’. That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologize. I’m a proud Indian and that will never change,” Priyanka tweeted on June 10. —IANS
dios and the executive producers of Quantico would like to extend an apology to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, The Blood of Romeo. The episode has stirred a lot of
emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn’t create the show, nor does she write or direct it. “She has no involvement in the casting of the show or the storylines depicted in the series.” The executive producers also stressed that Quantico is a work of fiction. “The show has featured antagonists of many different ethnicities and backgrounds, but in this case we inadvertently and regrettably stepped into a complex political issue.” the statement read further. “It was certainly not our intention to offend anyone,” the statement added. Quantico will not be getting a fourth season. The third season is on air in India on Star World. The cast also included Jake McLaughlin, Johanna Braddy, Russell Tovey, Alan Powell, Marlee Matlin and Blair Underwood.
Actress abduction case: Dileep approaches HC IANS, KOCHI
T
he eighth accused in the Malayalam actress abduction case, superstar Dileep, this week filed a petition in the Kerala High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. In the petition which is likely to be taken up in the court on Thursday, Dileep pointed out that he was framed by the police in the case, and he has no role in it.
Meanwhile, the prosecution in the case is also geared up to take on Dileep as they have decided to bring before the court that “an accused in a case has no right to decide on what sort of probe should take place and moreover, this is nothing but a ploy to delay the trial in the case”, which is all set to begin soon. The police probe team has already submitted the detailed charge sheet in the case and the court on March 14 had summoned all the accused in

the case, a common norm just before the trial starts. Dileep was arrested after two rounds of questioning on July 10, 2017, for his alleged role in the conspiracy hatched for the abduc-
tion of a Malayalam actress. Dileep’s former wife Manju Warrier is one of the witnesses in the case. After being in jail for 85 days, Dileep secured bail on October 3, 2017.
SRK, Salman say ‘Eid mubarak’ in ‘Zero’ teaser IANS, MUMBAI
B
ollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have wished India “Eid mubarak” by featuring together in a special song in a teaser of Aanand L. Rai’s Zero. The two stars, who have earlier worked in films like Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, share a warm camaraderie in the teaser, which will be attached to Salman’s Eid release Race 3. Shah Rukh enters a stadium, followed by Salman. They are seen dancing together as a voice in the background says: “Dono bhaiyon ke

taraf se saare Hindustan ko Eid mubarak. (Here’s wishing Eid mubarak to the whole of India from the two brothers).” Rai, who has directed Shah Rukhstarrer “Zero”, said in a statement:
“Like all Indians, I am also a festival lover. All the festivals in fact. The energy, vibrancy and brotherhood they bring with them makes me joyful and happy. It’s with the same joy that we have made Zero.
“The film is truly a celebration of many things and this Eid we had the opportunity to celebrate this day with the two Khans who have given us so many reasons to smile over the decades.” “Honestly for me, more than a teaser or a glimpse of the film, I just wanted to share this feeling with my audience. And for a director his feeling is his film. I wish all a happy Eid and seek their best wishes.” “Zero” is a story that celebrates life. Its first look featured Shah Rukh as a vertically challenged man piquing the interests of the audience to witness the unusual tale.”
