federal court in the United States has passed a ruling revoking the ban on same-sex marriages in Idaho and Nevada a day after the country’s Supreme Court allowed similar rulings in five other states. The three-judge panel unanimously ruled on October 7 that the ban on same-sex marriages in these two states “violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment”.
The panel then proceeded to strike it down, making same-sex marriages legal in Idaho and Nevada. “Idaho and Nevada’s marriage laws, by preventing same-sex couples from marrying and refusing to recognise same-sex marriages celebrated elsewhere, impose profound legal, financial, social and psychic harms on numerous citizens of those states,” said the court statement. With this ruling, Idaho and Nevada join 30 other U.S. states — 11 of them after the

B US varsity creates business school after Mumbai-born alumnus WASHINGTON: Rockford University in Illinois has announced the creation of the Puri Business School (PBS) in recognition of a $5 million contribution to the University by a Mumbai-born Indian-American alumnus. Sunil Puri, first Rockford Group founder and president, immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 to attend what was then called Rockford College, where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. The first named school at the University, PBS commemorates Puri’s lifetime commitment to Rockford University, the announcement said. Housed under the University’s College of Social Sciences, Commerce and Education, it will include the Economics, Business and Accounting (EBA) program, along with ancillary business related activities of the University. Puri has also donated a 28,000
square foot building which will serve as the hub for all related PBS programing at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His company owns and manages about 4 million square feet of retail, office and industrial space in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Puri takes pride in the fact that he can give back to the school to which he attributes much of his success, the announcement said. “Sunil’s is a shared vision with the University to establish a school of business that will not only be envied but provide our students with a superior educational experience that prepares them for success,” University President Robert L. Head said. Puri sees PBS not just graduating accountants and business managers; he sees it producing entrepreneurs and business leaders that assist in the economic revival of his region, the announcement said.
esides giving a much-needed boost to the bilateral strategic partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. also saw the two countries agreeing to collaborate in developing affordable vaccines to combat dengue, malaria, and tuberculosis. Modi’s visit, which is being seen as a “game changer” and set to put India-US ties “on an altogether new and high trajectory, saw him meeting with around 100 people during his five-day visit to the U.S. —New York and Washington — from September 26-30, said an official source on October3. During the U.S. visit, Modi “brought sharp focus and a direct connection between his domestic developmental priorities and foreign
policy” with the aim of promoting India’s development. Among their collaborations agreed upon during the visit is that both countries are to launch a combined effort to develop affordable vaccines for dengue, malaria, and tuberculosis. This will be done through India’s ministry of health and family welfare and the department of biotechnology and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, said the source.

First Ebola patient diagnosed in US dies IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he first Ebola patient diagnosed in the US died on October 8 at a hospital in Dallas, a city in the northern part of the US state of Texas, hospital authorities said. “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7.51 a.m,” Xinhua quoted Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas as saying in a statement.
A day earlier, the hospital had listed him in “critical but stable” condition, the statement added. And the patient reportedly showed some “positive signs”.
The hospital statement did not elaborate on Duncan’s condition. Duncan, a Liberian national, was tested positive for Ebola on September 30 as the first confirmed case diagnosed in the US. He arrived in Dallas on September 20 to visit family and fell ill several days later. The 42-year-old went to the Dallas hospital on September 26, only to be dismissed with some antibiotics by the doctors. Two days later, he was rushed back to the hospital.

nternet giant and search engine Yahoo! is giving ‘pink slips’ to about 600 techies here to trim its workforce in India and consolidate its core engineering activity in the U.S. Though Yahoo! India R&D Center here declined to confirm, a source in the know of the development told IANS on October 8 that about 200 lateral/senior employees have, however, been asked to relocate to its main engineering center in California, U.S. The 20-year-old firm said in the U.S. on October 7 that it was making some changes in its Bangalore operations to consolidate certain teams into fewer offices. “As we’re looking at ways to achieve greater efficiency, collaboration and innovation across business, we’re making changes to the way we operate in Bangalore leading to consolidation of certain teams into fewer offices,” the company said in a statement. Asserting that Yahoo!
will continue to have presence in India, the tech firm said its Bangalore operations would remain important to ensure sustainable growth. “The team leaders have been given an opportunity to work in its product development center at Santa Clara on the basis of their performance and long association,” the source said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media. Yahoo! India subsidiary has about 2,000 employees, with over 1,000 engaged in back office operations for voice/data services and customer support. The golden handshake has a sixeight months’ severance package, depending upon years of service with the company here and domain expertise in its core competencies. “Yahoo! has decided to consolidate its core engineering activity at one place. Hence, it asked its team leaders working in the India R&D facility here to shift to its main engineering lab at its head office,” the source said.

Government to look into Flipkart big sale NEW DELHI: A day after e-retailer Flipkart apologized to millions of customers after its promises of bumper discounts on orders placed for a host of products came a cropper, the government on October 8 said it will look into complaints and take a call on whether more clarity is required on ecommerce in retail. “We have received many inputs. Lot of concern has been expressed. We will look into it,” Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters here on Flipkart’s ‘Big Billion Day’ sale held October 6.”Now there are many complaints. Whether there is a need for a separate policy or some kind of clarification is needed, we will make it clear soon,” she added. Flipkart’s sale, that offered steep discounts on a range of products.

As many as 20 people, including 15 civilians, were injured in overnight Pakistani firing at the border. “Four army soldiers were injured in Pakistan firing on the LoC in Poonch district, one BSF trooper and 15 civilians were injured in firing by Pakistan Rangers on the international border in Jammu district during the night. “Pakistan has again started firing at BSF positions and civilian areas in Hira Nagar sector of the border in Kathua district on October 8 morning,” a senior police officer told IANS in Jammu.
Tharoor slammed for ‘Modi praise’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress in Kerala is set to write to the party high command voicing resentment against party MP Shashi Tharoor’s repeated praise of prime minister Narendra Modi. KPCC president V M Sudheeran said praises lavished on Modi repeatedly by Tharoor had hurt Congress workers who worked for his victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency for a second time. After interactions with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and other senior leaders, he said KPCC would submit a report to the high command on the issue reflecting the sentiments of the party’s Kerala unit. “Tharoor has praised Modi on several occasions. This has hurt the sentiments of the Congress and UDF workers who have put up hard work for Tharoor’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls,” Sudheeran told reporters. Tharoor had recently accepted Modi’s invitation to join the Clean India campaign , but clarified that it did not mean he was endorsing BJP’s ‘core Hindutva’ politics.
EC asks for report on Vadra IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Election Commission has sought a report from the Haryana chief electoral officer on the state government’s decision to clear a Gurgaon land deal involving Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra. The report will help the EC ascertain the facts of the case and determine if the approval was in violation of the model code of conduct. The EC has asked the state CEO and chief secretary to revert with the details of alleged letter validating mutation of the land relating to the deal between M/s Skylight Hospitality owned by Vadra and real-estate firm DLF Universal Ltd.
On October 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought EC’s intervention against Haryana government’s approval of the Vadra land deal, claiming that it went against the model code. Modi said, “They (Hooda government) know that after the elections, the son-in-law (Vadra) will not get any clearances for illegal deals. So, in between the election process, they have dared to take such a decision.”

It admitted that a couple of months ago, India had snapped off secretary-level talks with Pakistan, but that was not enough. In fact, after the September firing incidents by Pakistan on the international borders, Indian had warned of retaliating with bullets for bullets. “When will that (retaliation) happen? Modi is too busy with Maharashtra Assembly elections,” lamented the BJP’s exally of 25 years.

Maha bitter battle on the cards This month’s assembly elections in Maharashtra may well prove to be one of the most acrimonious contests in recent memory AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
S
ince the parting of close associates invariably arouses considerable antagonism, there is nothing surprising about the present hostility between the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the end of their 25-year-old partnership, and between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which have called off their 15-year-old ties. Hence the Shiv Sena’s charge that the BJP has “backstabbed” it and the Congress accusation that the inordinate ambitions of NCP leader Ajit Pawar led to the collapse of the alliance between the two parties. But even as these barbs and counter-barbs are expected to continue, what is worrying is the possibility that the battle may acquire a Marathi vs Gujarati overtone. Given the rancorous background of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, which led to the division of

the bi-lingual Bombay state into Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1960, there is no denying the presence of an element of tension between the two communities. Moreover, since the Shiv Sena’s appeal is based on mobilizing the Marathi manoos (people), the party will undoubtedly bank heavily on such parochial sentiments to boost its prospects. Sensing an opportunity to muddy the waters in this respect, Narayan Rane of the Congress has said the BJP may lure away investors from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Since this is the Shiv Sena’s first shot at attaining power on its own under its new leader, Uddhav Thackeray (whose desire to be chief
minister is said to be one reason for the rupture with the BJP), the party, which has a reputation for thuggery, is likely to pull out all the stops to grab power.
The animus between Shiv Sena and BJP will grow if there are signs that BJP is cozying up to the MNS led by Uddhav’s cousin, Raj. This will be all the more so if the BJP launches some kind of an electoral blitzkrieg with Narendra Modi addressing 20-odd rallies in the
state. Such an operation cannot but be regarded by the Shiv Sena as a direct challenge to its prestige since it has never been an ardent admirer of the strongman from Gujarat. Bal Thackeray, for instance, had favored Sushma Swaraj as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) prime ministerial candidate and Uddhav has rarely wasted an opportunity to say that the so-called Modi wave is a chimera as the election results in Tamil Nadu, Odisha and West Bengal showed. If the BJP outruns the Shiv Sena in a state which the latter considers its balliwick, the blow to its position, and especially to that of Uddhav, will be considerable since it will show that the party is on a

evered by the Tibetans as a ‘living god’ and idolized in both the Orient and the West, the Dalai Lama, known for his simplicity and typical jovial style, transcends all barriers of religion, language and even distances. He stepped back from an administrative role almost three years back but is active like never before in his sermons, lectures and rubbing shoulders with world leaders. As the Tibetan exile administration invites three fellow laureates here on October 2 to mark the silver jubilee of the conferment of the Nobel Prize on the Dalai Lama, IANS looks at future plans of the globetrotting Tibetan spiritual leader — the global face of the Tibetan exile movement — his contributions, his yearnings, his regrets, the Tibetans without

The future is open and you have an opportunity, a responsibility, to make this a better, more peaceful century than has gone before. “People of my age belong to the 20th century generation and the 20th century has passed, nobody can bring it back. Most of you belong to the 21st century, of which more than 80 years remain.
The future is open and you have an opportunity, a responsibility, to make this a better, more peaceful century than has gone before,” he often said in his remarks. “His Holiness attaches great importance to educating Tibetan children. Whenever, wherever he gets an opportunity, he loves to interact with them. He wants to make them bold enough to face the world,” Thubten Samphel, director of the Tibet Policy Institute, a think-tank under the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), told IANS. Living in exile in India for over half a century, the longing to see his homeland is still fresh in the mind of the 79year-old Dalai Lama. “I remain optimistic that I will be able to return to Tibet. China is in the process of changing. Besides, I’m not seeking separation from China,” the Dalai Lama wrote on his website (dalailama.com).
downhill slope after Balaseheb’s death. The animus between the Shiv Sena and the BJP will grow if there are signs that the latter is cozying up to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Uddhav’s cousin, Raj, with whom the former has a hotand-cold relationship. Raj, however, may have botched his chances by overplaying the parochial card by saying that he will call for autonomy for Maharashtra although he did clarify that this will not mean independence. However, under his version of autonomy, the state will run its own railways and have total control over employment, which means that he will push for his favorite sons-ofthe-soil theory which had led to MNS cadres assaulting taxi drivers, vegetable vendors and others from north India some months ago. The BJP’s problem, however, is that the untimely deaths of Pramod Mahajan and Gopinath Munde have left it without a possible chief ministerial candidate, especially since Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is believed to be unwilling to return to the troublesome provincial backwaters. The BJP will have to depend almost entirely, therefore, on Modi if it wants to cross the winning line. But whether what was an advantage in the parliamentary polls with a different set of expectations will benefit the party in an assembly election is difficult to say.

Indians join wave of home buyers in US, says ‘NYT’ WASHINGTON: Affluent Indians as also the not-so-super rich Indians are joining a wave of foreign property buyers, who see the recovering United States housing market as a safe haven for their money, according to the New York Times. While for affluent Indians, American real estate is a security blanket in the face of a bubble in real estate prices in major Indian cities, many less-than-super rich foreign investors just want a safe place to put extra savings, it said. For Indians in particular, who long trusted in gold to protect their wealth, American real estate offers a “very, very attractive destination”, Subir Gokarn, director of research at Brookings India in New Delhi, was quoted as saying. The wealthy elite from China, Latin America and elsewhere have bought apartments in glassy towers in Manhattan, luxury condos in Miami and homes along the West Coast. But the most popular property searches for people from India were
in and around Silicon Valley, where technology firms heavily recruit from India, according to Jed Kolko, chief economist at Trulia, an online marketplace for residential real estate. Also popular were the Boston and Philadelphia areas near universities that have numerous students from India, suburban areas of New Jersey and in Queens, where there are established Indian-American communities. In an echo of the late 1980s, foreign investment in US, real estate has taken off with foreign buyers now making up 7 percent of total existing-home sales of $1.2 trillion, the Times said citing a survey from the National Association of Realtors. Of those, Indians represent 6 percent of the purchases, spending $5.8 billion, up from $3.9 billion over the same period a year ago and on par with buyers from Britain. Buyers from five countries account for over half of international home sales, with those from India ranked third, paying a median of $343,000. — IANS

ilitants of the Islamic State (IS) group have retreated from the main streets of the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani where they were attacked by the aircraft of the U.S.-led international coalition twice this week, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The London-based NGO said on October 9 that the planes bombarded the IS positions in eastern and southern Kobani, which is located on the border with Turkey and inhabited mostly by Kurds. The IS fighters, who attacked the town from the east and from the south, were targeted on October 8 by the coalition aircraft. Meanwhile, clashes between the radicals and Kurdish irregulars continued in and around Kobani where the IS began its offensive September 16, forcing thousands of townspeople to flee across the border to Turkey and to other regions in Syria. Earlier this week, Turkish

Canada to send warplanes to fight IS TORONTO: The lower House of the Canadian Parliament has approved the deployment of up to six CF-18 Hornet fighter bombers to attack Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq. The Canadian military deployment, approved on October 7, also includes a refueling tanker, two Aurora surveillance aircraft and some 600 troops. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that the measure has not been taken lightly.
authorities detained some 100 Kurds who had taken shelter in a school in the Turkish village of Ali Kur. The refugees protested the decision to relocate them to Sanliurfa military prison. Sanliurfa is a Turkish city close to the Syrian town of Tel Abiad that is controlled by the jihadis. Earlier, U.S. Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey has said that it is possible that the Syrian city of Kobani, bordering Turkey, could be seized by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in the next few days.
HONG KONG: Student leaders and government officials in Hong Kong will hold talks on October 10 to resolve the issues that have sparked over a week-long pro-democracy protests. “The first session will take place on October 10,” said Lau Kong-wah, under secretary for constitutional and mainland affairs. A maximum of five people in each delegation will be allowed to participate. The meeting will be open for the media but closed for public, Lau said on October 7. The official delegation will be led by Chief Secretary Carrie Lam. Although student leaders are not satisfied with the way the government has structured the dialogue, they believe they have no choice but to participate, said Lester Shum, deputy secretary of the Hong Kong Federation of Students.
But Lester warned that if the authorities tried to dodge students’ demands and did not act in good faith, student leaders will leave the dialogue. Lau said the framework for holding elections in 2017 must be respected if Hong Kong wants to reform its electoral system. The number of protesters has been dwindling in the last couple of days, with only hundreds turning out Tuesday. The protesters’ demands included the departure of the chief executive of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, Cy Leung Chung-ying, widely seen as Beijing’s puppet. They also seek guarantees that Hong Kong citizens will be allowed to choose candidates from an unrestricted list for 2017 polls, as Beijing promised when Britain handed over the control of the territory in 1997.

Pakistan again raises Kashmir in UN ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
Osama’s body dropped into sea with iron chains WASHINGTON: After al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan’s garrison town of Abbottabad, his body was kept in a heavy black bag of 300 pounds of iron chain and dropped into the sea, former CIA director and defense secretary Leon Panetta said. After Osama was shot dead as planned the body of the world’s most wanted terrorist was transported by marines flying an Osprey to waiting aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson for his burial by sea. “Laden’s body was prepared for burial according to Muslim traditions, draped in a white shroud, given final prayers in Arabic, and then placed inside a heavy black bag,” he wrote in Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace.

aising the Kashmir issue yet again at the UN, Pakistan dragged the UN Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) into the current situation along the Line of Control where cross-border shelling has flared up. “UNMOGIP must be enabled to play its role in monitoring the ceasefire,” Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Masood Khan told the General Assembly on October 7. Ignoring the toll of Indian civilians from Pakistani shelling, he said: “As a result of the Indian firing yesterday, four innocent lives were lost on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. We call upon the Indian government to immediately cease fire and help us preserve tranquility.” At least five Indian civilians have been killed in Pakistani shellings over the last two days. The current round to cross-border firings that began in August resumed on October 3 after an almost month-long lull. It has been described by Indian officials as the worst cease-fire violations since 2003. Made up of military personnel from 10 countries, the
Lanka fishermen detained in Myanmar COLOMBO: A group of Sri Lankan fishermen and their three trawlers have been reportedly detained for having illegally ventured into Myanmarese waters, an official said here Tuesday. It was earlier reported that a group of Sri Lankan fishermen, who departed from the southern coastal area, were left stranded due to a storm, Xinhua reported. Around 30 fishing vessels were caught in the storm, Lal De Silva, assis-
tant director of the Department of Fisheries, Sri Lanka, told reporters. According to the department, it has requested Myanmar authorities to allow the affected boats to enter their waters, but have not been given an official reply. “We have requested the Myanmar and Bangladeshi governments to provide necessary assistance,” the official said, adding that the fishermen may have been detained for poaching.

UNMOGIP monitors the ceasefire along the Line of Control under a UN Security Council mandate. Pakistan earlier said that on October 6 it had lodged a protest with the UNMOGIP over “unprovoked firing” on the Line of Control (LoC) by Indian forces. Khan’s mention of the UNMOGIP comes after India signaled that it considers the group has outlived its utility. This is in line with India’s contention that Kashmir issues have to be dealt with solely by New Delhi and Islamabad because the 1972 Simla Agreement called for finding a bilateral solution to the dispute.
DHAKA: Bangladesh National Party (BNP) joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on October 7 warned that a mass uprising against Sheikh Hasina-led government was imminent if his party’s demand of an interim election was not met. “A mass uprising against this illegal government is imminent,” bdnews24.com quoted Rizvi as saying at a press conference in the capital Dhaka. He said the government was creating a “smokescreen” to sidestep the BNP’s demand for an interim election. “This illegal government must step down to ensure a free, fair and credible election participated by all and supervised by a neutral body,” the BNP leader demanded. The BNP and its allies boycotted the last general elections, demanding
a non-partisan supervision. They have since been demanding a dialogue for fresh elections at the earliest but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has rejected it. Hasina said that the BNP leaders were “incoherent” in what they said. She said her bitter political rival BNP chief Khaleda Zia would not accept invitations for talks.

‘New energy infused into ties’ US media hails Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to US IANS, WASHINGTON
S
uggesting that U.S. President Barack and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had infused “new energy” into their stalled bilateral relationship, the New York Times wonders whether they can turn aspirations of “strategic partnership” into reality. Obama and Modi “have done the minimum needed to infuse new energy into a bilateral relationship that had run aground,” the influential US daily said in an editorial titled “India and America, Beginning Again.” But “to address the challenges before them, including a rising China,” it said, they “are going to have to work harder, so relations don’t atrophy or become more
strained.” Economics is a priority, the Times said, and “American businesses are eager to cash in on Modi’s invitation to help India, the world’s second-most-populous nation, meet its defense, infra-

failed to break an impasse on two major irritants: trade and taxes.” There was also “no sign of progress on such strategic concerns as how to curb the nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan and limit chances of another war with Pakistan over Kashmir or between India and China over their border,” Times said. “There remain, too, serious questions” about whether Modi “will defend the rights of all Indians,” the Times cautioned. While Modi, it noted, had “expressed concern over the Islamic State, he did not sign up for the coalition led by the United States. “And there was no mention of solutions on the differences with Washington on Ukraine and Iran.” “Estranged during the Cold War, India and the United States

N
arendra Modi was dressed for the occasion wherever he went, but the diverse colors that the Indian Prime Minister donned on his recent US visit had one unifying theme — to win America. And this is being talked about even a week after his visit. And win America he did even before he reached Washington for a much awaited summit with President Barack Obama after wowing the Indian diaspora, sharing the stage with top American music stars to reach out to America’s liberal youth and wooing the big business in the Big Apple. It was a surprise performance from a once provincial leader with little foreign policy experience who came to power just four months ago though with a historic win in Indian elections giving his Bharatiya Janata Party a clear mandate for the first time in 30 years. Landing in America’s financial capital in a smart casual maroon bandhgala and black pants, he got out of his car in front of his hotel to shake hands with delighted members of the Indian-American community chanting “Modi Modi” as anxious security guys scrambled to keep their charge safe Then he switched to a more formal bandhgala suit for meetings with the city’s mayor and a Nobel Laureate cancer researcher. That was to be the pattern of Modi’s 100-hour action-packed

offered to engage in a “serious bilateral dialogue”, but “without the shadow of terrorism”. In the evening, he outlined his vision of a ‘Clean India’ to a 65,000-strong youthful crowd at
New York’s Central Park addressing them in an idiom they understood saying “I salute you” and “May the force be with you” from the evergreen hit Star Wars films. A capacity crowd of nearly 20,000 star struck Indian-American gave him a rock star like welcome at the Madison Square Garden as he spoke to them in Hindi in his chatty style for over an hour as thousands more heard him on jumbotron screens at Times square and in homes across the US. Then packing meetings with two governors, including South Carolina’s Indian-American Nikki Haley, 40 odd lawmakers, 11 CEOs and an address to the Coun-
cil on Foreign Relations, again in Hindi, Modi headed to Washington. An Indian-American writer suggested that Modi through his fast for the Hindu festival of Navratri and the choice of his apparel was speaking in code his “Hindu nationalist” supporters, while another implied that he was cocking a snook to the American establishment that had denied him a visa for nearly a decade. Be as it may, the US officialdom from President Barack Obama down also treated Modi no less as they broke the ice over an exclusive dinner at the White House. As they shared common experiences, Obama wondered how Modi kept up such a rigorous schedule on just a diet of warm water and yoga and told him how he himself enjoyed dancing during his 2010 trip to India. There lay the true significance of the Modi visit though some critics dismissed their joint statement vowing to deepen cooperation in from defense to nuclear to space to counter-terrorism to women’s empowerment and health as merely a rehashed ‘laundry list’. What Modi himself has called a “hugely successful” and US officials branded as an “extraordinarily successful” journey was different from others before in more ways than just optics: the two sides have lined up a “pretty ambitious agenda of engagement” over the next nine months or so to translate words into action.

MODI VISIT
Modinomics all the way Prime Minister Modi inspires investor confidence in new Indian set up during US visit, $42 bn to be invested IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi’s “extremely successful” US visit, especially his meeting with top business leaders there, has seen a US-India business body committing to $42 billion investment in India with many lauding the “Gujarat model” of development. In a survey following Modi’s five-day visit, the US-India Business Council (USIBC), in a survey, found that $42 billion was willing to be committed over the next two-three years for investment by just 20 percent of the members surveyed, said government sources. If the rest of the USIBC members and the top U.S. businesses had been surveyed, the figure would have exceeded $100 billion, the official added. There was a “very positive” investor sentiment among the businesspersons in the U.S. “based on the experience in Gujarat”, said the source. What added to the investor confidence was Prime Minister Modi being very conversant with the “nuts and bolts” of business during his interactions with the top CEOs of global firms like Google, Boeing, Black Rock and Pepsico. Modi’s position as being the head of a majority government, without being hobbled by the pulls and pressures of allies, also added to the confidence levels. The Prime Minister conveyed with great clarity on assurances of his government of removing red tape and of making the business environment easy, which also helped, the sources added. The US business leaders did raise the issue of taxes and the issue of “ease of doing business” in India

repeatedly, said the official source. But following talks with the prime minister, the US businesspersons were “all very positively inclined and committed to raising the investment portfolio in India”, the source added.
Modi conveyed with clarity on assurances of his government of removing red tape and of making the business environment easy This is a major initiative for increasing FDI and FII flows from US, the leading source of FDI and FII in the world, to India. The Indo-US Investment Initiative is to be led by the India’s
finance ministry and the US Department of Treasury. It is to focus on raising investment by institutional investors and corporate entities primarily by facilitating individual investment proposals and projects. Under the initiative, the finance ministry will set up a single-point problem resolution and facilitation arrangement for ensuring that prospective investments do not face unnecessary hurdles and actually materialize. It will have a particular focus on capital market development and financing of infrastructure. An Infrastructure Collaboration Platform is also being set up between the finance ministry and the US Department of Commerce to enhance participation of US companies in infrastructure projects in India.
NEW DELHI: One thing that singularly defined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high voltage US visit was the open courting of American capital and his efforts to alter the narrative about India as an investment destination. In his individual and collective meetings with business leaders in New York and Washington, he pledged to take a series of steps in the coming months to ease doing of business in India. Modi told them to invest in India before the queue became too long. And he appears to have succeeded in persuading this weary but important group of interlocutors to transfer capital, technology and best practices as part of their investments in India. All indications emanating from the country are that his interactions are going to translate into several deals. “India has the potential to be on a very different development trajectory” under the Modi-led government, says Ajay Banga, chairman of the US-India Business Council, which has identified over $41 billion of investment in the next two to three years. And that’s based on a survey of just 20 percent of members of the USIBC, which would meet on October 9 to discuss India’s growth prospects under Modi at its annual Leadership
Conference. “I deeply believe that he’s committed to changing India,” said Caterpillar’s Douglas Oberhelman after meeting Modi. Boeing CEO James McNerney said the company would accelerate its engagement with India. “We’ve got folks who are firming up travel plans,” gushed Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal during a media briefing. Many US companies now expect there will be a better business climate in India as Modi has promised to “implement and enforce all parameters of ease of business”. They see long-term opportunities in sectors like infrastructure, defense and aerospace. Modi has his sights on export-oriented manufacturing FDI, says political scientist Sonal Pandya of the University of Virginia, that creates skilled jobs and introduces advanced technologies without intensifying local competition, given the sharp political division in India over FDI in sectors like multi-brand retail. The private sector in the US holds huge investible resources. It owns and incubates an array of technologies that are of immense use in India’s development process.
Obama very pleased and enjoyed with Modi visit to US WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama was “very pleased” with and “enjoyed” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit as it reflected the depth of the strong relationship between the US and India, according to the White House. The president was “very pleased with” and “certainly values the opportunity that he had to visit personally with Prime Minister Modi”, Obama’s press secretary Josh Earnest said when asked about the future of US-India relations after the Modi visit. “It reflects that depth of the strong relationship between the US and India that the two leaders were able to come together and discuss a broad array of topics,” Earnest told the media. “Each of those topics represents an area of important cooperation between our two countries. “I’m confident that as the relationship between our countries progresses, so will those areas of cooperation,” Earnest added. He also pointed to a “pretty detailed list of the agreements that were reached” between the two
leaders. The agreements were “indicative of the wide range of areas where the US and India have a strong, cooperative partnership.” “The president certainly values that aspect of the relationship between our two countries.” It was the first time the two men met in person and “I know the president enjoyed the visit with Prime Minister Modi to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial”, he said, referring to Obama’s spontaneous gesture in joining the memorial visit. During the visit, “the Indian people saw some important images,” Earnest said. “They saw the president of the US and the prime minister of India sitting down, side by side in the Oval Office, discussing shared interests and priorities between our two countries. “The people of India also saw the president travel with Modi to the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial on the National Mall. “It also demonstrates a shared commitment to the success of our two democracies,” Earnest
said. “I think it’s indicative of the kind of strong partnership that exists between the two leaders and between our two countries.” During the visit, India and the U.S. committed to make joint and concerted efforts to dismantle terrorist safe havens, including four Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, the D-Company and the Haqqanis besides Al Qaeda. But India didn’t join the U.S. coalition against the Islamic State terrorists. Asked if the U.S. was disappointed over that, he simply said: “We certainly value the strong security partnership we have with India. “We do have a shared commitment to combating terrorism. Both countries, both India and the U.S., are dealing with threats. “And we value the strong relationship we have so that we can cooperate to meet those threats, to confront those threats, and to mitigate the risk that they pose to our citizens both at home and around the world.”

Bhavani Singh submitted he had no objection to her bail application. The AIADMK leader was convicted and sentenced for four years and fined `1 bn for corruption by a special court here on September 27. “No sufficient grounds for suspension of the sentence. The Supreme Court clearly indicated that corruption violates human rights and leads to economic imbalance,” the judge said in his interim order. The Tamil posters warned that Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu would be held hostage if the former chief minister was not released immediately. A special court on September 27 jailed Jayalalithaa for four years for corruption. She was also fined `1 bn. Since then she is in the Bangalore Central Jail. The poster carries the names of K.C. Gaiety marks Eid-ul-Azha across Telangana, Andhra IANS, HYDERABAD
E
id-ul-Azha was celebrated on October 6 with religious fervor and gaiety across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The day began with Muslims, attired in their best, offering Eid prayers at Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in both the states. Tens of thousands offered prayers in Hyderabad and nine other districts of Telangana and all 13 districts of neighboring Andhra Pradesh. After the prayers, Muslims sacrificed goats or other cattle commemorating the great sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim. Imams and khateebs (who deliver sermons) exhorted Muslims to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and
follow Prophet Ibrahim, who offered to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail to please Allah. The Almighty replaced Ismail with a sheep just as Ibrahim was about to sacrifice him. Also known as Bakrid or Eid-e-Qurban, it is the second major festival of Muslims. The meat of the sacrificed animal is distributed equally in three parts. The person making the sacrifice keeps one part for his family while the other two are distributed among relatives and the poor. The streets of the Muslim-majority old city of Hyderabad wore a festive look while butchers, coming from other districts, did brisk business. Hectic activity was seen in many parts of the city as the sale of goats continued throughout the night.

‘Haider’: Vishal Bhardwaj’s masterstroke Film: “Haider”; Cast: Tabu, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, Narendra Jha; Writer-Director: Vishal Bhardwaj; Rating: *****
S
hakespeare lives! Seldom if ever, has a Shakespearean tragedy been given such a magnificent treatment in cinema of any language. Sure, the narrative is fractured and fatally flawed at times, but like the hero’s villainous uncle, who lies limbless writhing in pain in the Kashmiri snow pleading for death at the end, the narrative dares you to end the pain of a people who wear their brutal existence on their sleeves. Haider is a beast that just won’t be tamed by regular cinematic definitions. There is flamboyance and subtlety, both at once in the treat-
ment. Elegance and earthiness rub shoulders in the execution of what is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most complex tragedies. And to place Hamlet in militant Kashmir ...what a masterstroke! Haider is the kind of rarest of rare
cinema that unfurls wave after wave of exquisite narrative fuel into the frames, providing a kind of compelling narration that is propelled as much by the passionate writing as the intuitive direction. Bhardwaj understands his Shake-
speare inside out. He transmutes Hamlet into Haider with an unbridled fearlessness, tempered by a restraint of treatment that goes a long way in imparting an urgent sense of beauty to the work. The basic idea is compelling to the core. Freeing his narrative from the fretful freedom of excessive self indulgence seen in his last film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Bhardwaj’s vision takes wings creating one of the most complex and compelling mother-son relationships seen before and after Yash Chopra’s Deewaar. That Tabu and Shahid play the mother and son torn by the agonizing disappearance of the man they both love (Narendra Jha, a surprisingly well cast actor in a role that is more about absence than presence) is a blessing for Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare. — Subhash K. CHENNAI: Actor Sathyaraj says his role in the forthcoming Tamil action movie Poojai is the best opportunity he has got since his 1993 cult hit Walter Vetrivel also in Tamil. Sathyaraj has played a police officer in both films. “I really enjoyed playing police officer in Poojai. I think it’s the best opportunity I have got since Walter Vetrivel,” he told reporters at a promotional event here on October 4. She is currently looking forward to the re-release of 1980 Telugu classic Sankarabharanam.

Shruti was last seen in 2012 Tamil films 3 and 7am Arivu. Both films didn’t do well at the box office. “I enjoyed working in Poojai. What’s special about it is that I’m returning to Tamil industry. I need to thank Vishal for making me a heroine in the industry again,” Shruti said at a promotional event here. anised version of the Bourne series, Yaan only ends up being an archetypal Tamil film interjected with a few action and chase sequences. Yaan has a promising story, but it kicks in quite late because until the
interval it concentrates on ticking off all the boxes in the commercial cinema format. It spends time on developing a romantic track between Jiiva and Thulasi we are least interested in. Both of them make a terrible pair
on screen. There are three songs placed at the wrong junctures to add to the woes. The entire first half is filled with scenes that we’ve seen over and over again in Tamil cinema over the last decade. And what you see is definitely not entertainment. It’s tough to choose between Jiiva and Chandran to blame for the big budget mess. Jiiva has been an actor and he should know best what will be accepted by the audience. He has worked as a cinematographer for over two decades and he should’ve known better too. Together they’ve produced a film that makes you yawn in boredom. Maybe, Chandran is a better cinematographer than a filmmaker. Or maybe he just isn’t ready yet to be a filmmaker. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

INDIAN AMERICANS AMONG POPULAR SCIENCE’S TOP 10 BY A STAFF WRITER
M
ICHIGAN - After an annual six-month selection process to identify the most inspired young scientists and engineers whose ideas will transform the future, Popular Science recently announced that there were two Indian American scientists were among the ten top researchers whom they consider the best and the brightest of 2014. The two bright sparks were Prabal Dutta of the University of Michigan and Manu Prakash of Stanford University, Dutta, an assistant professor in the UMich Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, is known for elegant devices that obtain energy in surprising ways. For example, he built a system that plugs into the audio jack of smartphones, siphoning off the minuscule amount of energy that typically powers earbuds in order to run sensors that collect data. The technology has been used in everything from credit card readers to some of the more than 12,000 radiation sensors built by Japanese citizens after Fukushima. Dutta’s other projects include a set of

cameras only a few cubic millimeters in size and lapel pins that track how air temperature, humidity, and the distance between speakers affects the spread of flu. And he’s still working to create ever-better versions of his little energy scavengers. “They’re really perpetual computers—they can run forever on whatever they can harvest from their environment,” Dutta said. They have almost equally infinite applications.
As a Stanford physicist, Prakash is still reinventing high-tech tools using inexpensive materials — an endeavor he calls “frugal science.” Rather than starting with off-the-shelf components, Prakash lets the problem guide the design. For example, when he set out to build a diagnostic microscope for health workers, he knew it would have to be cheap, rugged, and easily produced.
BUSINESSMAN IS FACING $150-M FRAUD CHARGES BY A STAFF WRITER
O
RLANDO (FL) -- Orlandobased businessman Nikesh Patel (30) was arrested last week on fraud charges that he allegedly sold $150 million in loans to an unidentified Milwaukee company. The FBI alleges he sold the loans as being guaranteed by the US Department of Agriculture when they were not. An order releasing Patel on $100,000 bond was signed by US Magistrate Judge David Baker in Orlando on September 30. “Patel sold approximately 25 loans to Company A on false pretenses. Patel submitted among other things fabricated loan guarantee forms falsely reflecting that the USDA guaranteed a portion of the loan’s principal amount,” an affidavit from the FBI attached to Patel’s arrest warrant says. Says Patel’s attorney Mark NeJame:
Nikesh Patel
”Patel denies the allegations. There’s a lot of confusion that surrounds the allegations. I’m optimistic that all of this
will be resolved in a very positive way. He’s not been indicted, and these are merely allegations.” Patel is the founder and CEO of Orlando-based First Farmers Financial and had recently launched a hotel redevelopment company, Alena Hospitality. The hotel company recently opened a Doubletree by Hilton at University of Central Florida and has been renovating the former Marriott hotel in downtown Orlando near the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. Patel paid $14 million for the downtown hotel, which was slated to become the Renaissance Orlando with another $17 million renovation. Patel is a former bank executive for Fifth Third Bank, Beach Business Bank and Comerica Bank. He has also been involved in restaurant businesses, including part ownership of downtown Orlando’s Mingos.
OFBJP launches ‘Clean City’ awareness drive BY A STAFF WRITER

EW YORK -- Supporting the recently-launched “Clean India” campaign by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India, volunteers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and several prominent Indian Americans undertook a “Clean City” public awareness campaign in New York. The symbolic campaign was led by Vijay Jolly, Global Convener of BJP Overseas Affairs under the guidance of OFBJP (Overseas Friends of BJP) US president, Chandrakant Patel and other OFBJP supporters. Hundreds of Indian Americans and BJP supporters swarmed 52nd street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan at noon on October 2, wielding brooms to clean the sidewalk and the street. “It is the duty of the leadership to exhort and motivate its citizens for ‘Clean City’ public programs,” Jolly told media persons. “And Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has involved 125 million Indian citizens in this campaign on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.” The OFBJP US Chapter office-bearers

present on the occasion were Jayesh Patel-past president; R.P.Singh--organizing general secretary; Ram Kamath, general secretary; Dr Sangeeta Chawla, convener of Women’s Wing; co-conveners Kajol Bishnoi and Shukla and Legal Affairs Convener, Rani Imandi. Also present were OFBJP Central Committee members Kapil Kumria and Rajnish
Goenka from India and Rajeev Bhambri, COO of Rediff India Abroad. All those attending the event pledged to keep their neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey clean and pollution-free. Jolly thanked all present on behalf of BJP National President Amit Shah for participating in the symbolic public awareness program in the US.
Faced with these constraints, Prakash developed a pocket-size paper microscope that is powerful enough to detect a malaria parasite in a drop of blood, yet costs just 50 cents. Prakash’s newest device, inspired by a music box, leverages punch cards and a hand crank to carry out complex chemical analyses. Changing the holes on the cards determines which chemicals will be released when. Prakash envisions scientists using the apparatus to test soil chemistry or detect different kinds of snake venom, but it could be modified to run almost any kind of assay. “We’re going to make them very widely available and let other people build their own apps on top,” he said. Prakash’s inventions may be designed to address complicated problems, but their low cost and simple designs make them accessible to everyone. “Scientific tools have been built and designed and kept in the silos of universities,” Prakash said, adding he wants to bring them to the masses.

ITTSBURGH (PA) -- Mihir Garimella, a Fox Chapel area high school sophomore, earned top honors on September 23 in the Google Science Fair, a global science and technology research competition for teens. Garimella, of O’Hara, was placed highest in the 13-14 age group and in the first-ever Computer Science category for his flying robot creation, similar to those used in search and rescue missions and inspired by the fruit fly’s capacity to escape moving objects. The 14-year-old received two $25,000 awards—one that will help him develop the project — and a year’s worth of Google mentoring. On a short break during a tour of San Francisco with Google, Garimella told a Pittsburgh newspaper that he was “thrilled and humbled” by the win. “I think this is really the beginning, so I’m really hoping to apply this project and make a difference,” the Indian American youth said. The teen had told the same paper in July that the idea for the flying robot emerged after he and his family returned from a trip to India to find old bananas on their kitchen counter and a swarm of fruit flies. When he tried to swat them, they easily avoided his hand, and he realized that the pests were succeeding where flying robots had failed. In 2011, after an earthquake in Japan, a small helicopter-like robot called a quadrotor was sent into a building at Tohoku University to map the damage. While it had an impressive record of avoiding stationary obstacles as it flew, it could not deal with moving objects.

This year’s Garba extravaganza has been held first time for six days featuring live music with raas, garba and sanedo which was enjoyed for hours on end by participants of all the ages dressed in colorful traditional chaniya cholis and kurta-pajamas. While the first four days of Garba were held at South Brunswick High School, the last two days will be at Cross Roads South Middle School, 195 Major Road in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey on October 10 and 11. The IACFNJ held this year’s Garba in a state-of-the-art gymnasium at South Brunswick High School in safe surroundings and culturally diverse neighborhood where South Asians are highly populated in surrounding towns of North Brunswick, Franklin Park, Princeton, Princeton Junction, Monroe, East Brunswick, Robbinsville and East and West Windsor. EW YORK -- A new report titled ‘Citizenship: A Wise Investment for Cities on the civic, economic, and social benefits of naturalization in American cities’ says that immigrants’ earnings are estimated to increase 8-11% after naturalization, and also highlight beneficial ripple effects on the broader economy. Naturalization is the legal act or process by which a non-citizen in a country may acquire citizenship or nationality of that country. The report was released by the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) and the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII). The findings coincided with events in the cities of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles announcing their mayors’ collaboration on a national immigrant naturalization effort called Cities for Citizenship (C4C), which was initiated in partnership with the report authors. According to the report, if only half the number of eligible immigrants were to naturalize, it would cause a maximum benefit of almost $10 billion total for the three cities over the course of a decade; specifically, from $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion in Chicago, to $1.9 billion to $3.3 billion in Los Angeles, to $2.2 billion to $4.8 billion in New York. The report also found that the social security income (SSI) eligibility of newlynaturalized immigrants would relieve pressure on local assistance programs by bringing more federal dollars into the local economy. “Cities and their mayors are modeling progressive leadership to address national issues where the federal government has failed,” said Ana Maria Archila, Co-Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy, in a statement. “Cutting through the administrative and financial red tape of the naturalization process is an outgrowth of that leadership and will benefit millions of American families who have been excluded from the privileges of citizenship.”

Stressed women
easily prone to Alzheimer’s: Study According to experts, a combination of lifestyle, genetics and environment factors cause the disease IANS, LOS ANGELES
L
adies, try not to stress too much. New research says anxious, easily-stressed women are more prone to developing Alzheimer’s later in life. After following 800 women for nearly four decades, researchers say certain personality dispositions can put you at risk for the memory-robbing disease, reports huffingtonpost.com. Middle-aged women with an average age of 46 were given a battery of personality tests and asked to make note of any periods of prolonged stress longer than one month to determine certain traits and tendencies.
Researchers then looked at how outgoing or withdrawn participants were, if they were easily distressed, prone to worrying and jealousy, and if they showed signs of neuroticism— a fundamental personality trait in the study of psychology characterized by anxiety, fear and other things. Over the course of the study, 19 percent of women developed dementia, a kind of brain disease. But women who scored high for neuroticism were twice as likely to develop the disease than their lowstress counterparts.
Withdrawn women with high stress scores were twice as likely as outgoing and less distressed women to develop Alzheimer’s. It’s not known exactly what brings on the disease, but experts believe it to be a combination of lifestyle factors, genetics, and environment. Other research has also suggested stress could be a contributing factor. A 2013 study suggested that stress steroids in the brain can impair memory and increase the amount of plaque-building proteins. And taking a different approach, another study found that stress-busting yoga and meditation can even slow the progression of dementia.
Family meal good for kids IANS, NEW YORK
E
ven having as few as one or two family meals a week during adolescence may protect your kids from being obese when they turn into adults, says a study. Researchers believe that coming together for meals may provide opportunities for emotional connections among family members, the food is more likely to be healthy and adolescents may be exposed to the parental model of healthy
eating behavior. For Project EAT (Eating and Activity among Teens), the researchers used data from a 10-year longitudinal study (2,287 participants), to examine weight-related variables (dietary intake, physical activity and weight control behavior) among adolescents. Among adolescents who reported that they never ate family meals together, 60 percent were overweight and 29 percent were obese at the 10-year follow-up.
Common painkiller helps lungs IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have found that ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller, could reduce lung inflammation associated with ageing. Immune cells from old mouse lungs fought tuberculosis bacteria as effectively as cells from young mice after lung inflammation was reduced by ibuprofen, the findings showed. The drug had no effect on the immune response to TB in young mice. “Very few researchers have linked inflammation to infectious disease in old age, even though TB in particular will drive that inflammation even further,” said senior study author Joanne Turner, an associate professor at Ohio State Univer-
sity. “The inflammation-associated changes we saw in the lungs were important findings,” he added. Though the research was conducted on mice, Turner co-led a previous study showing that mouse and human lungs develop the same profile of pro-inflammatory proteins and fatty molecules with age, creating an environment that impairs the immune response to infection.
Your week ahead... Aries Get ready to do some serious negotiating as you redraw boundaries and figure out how much you really want to share — and what you’d like to keep all to yourself. A relationship may suddenly feel suffocating.
Taurus Should you grip on tighter or let go of the wheel? This week, the answer is: both. Get ready for some contradictions as planets seesaw through your systematic sixth house and your twelfth house of surrender.
Gemini A Gemini cannot survive on witty banter alone, nor small talk or conversations about the weather. This week, you’ll be searching for passionate, meaningful exchanges with people who view the world from a visionary’s lens.
Cancer Bunny slippers or red-soled Loubs? Balancing your personal and professional lives will be the grand theme of the week, as planets seesaw between your domestic fourth house and your ambitious tenth.
Leo The search for higher truths is on this week, which could lead you down some fascinating paths. It begins on Tuesday when the Libra Sun in your curious third house opposes iconoclast Uranus in your visionary ninth.
Virgo You’re sexy and you know it, Virgo: But does that power make your prim sign a bit nervous too? This week’s stars help you connect to your own divine magnetism, in a way that feels right for you.
(October 9-15) Libra Your urge to merge intensifies this week, Libra — but so does your desire for sweet freedom. It’s going to be quite the balancing act for your celestial scales to handle. It begins on Tuesday.
Scorpio This Tuesday, the Libra Sun (in your twelfth house of illusions, boundaries and transitions) faces off with team-spirited Uranus in your sixth house of service. You could hit a real wall with your solo routine.
Sagittarius This week, the unfiltered Archer is at the helm, shooting wild and visionary arrows into the world. It feels great to be so fully YOU this week, even if a few eyebrows are raised.
Capricorn Bring a little more heart and soul into your work this week. When there’s a goal to accomplish, you will steadily push through to the finish line with unwavering focus. Team-spirited Uranus wants you to whistle while you work.
Aquarius Open mouth, insert ankle boot? You’re quite the candid one this week, Aquarius. And while some of your zingers will hit the mark, others will garner mixed reviews. The laughs — and gaffes — begin on Tuesday.
Pisces On Friday, retrograde Mercury slips back from Scorpio into Libra and your eighth house of shared resources and intimate relationships for the rest of its backspin, until October 25.

Indian men’s Kabaddi team celebrate after wining the gold in Incheon on October 3.
India finish off Asiad campaign in style Remain eighth in medal tally with 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze IANS,INCHEON
T
he Indian medal count swelled for the last time here as their men’s and women’s kabaddi teams clinched golds in their respective finals to end the country’s campaign at the 2014 Asian Games on October 3. With the two gold medals, India jumped a place to conclude in eighth position in the standings with 57 medals — 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze — eight shy of the
2010 Guangzhou Asiad. India maintained their dominance in kabaddi with both the men’s and women’s teams retaining their gold medals at the Songdo Global University Gymnasium. The women’s team defended the top prize they won in 2010, when women’s kabaddi was introduced at the Asiad, and similar to the men’s final, Iran posed a stiff challenge. In hockey, the men’s hockey won the gold medal after 16 long years, beating Pakistan 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out in the final on October 2.

USA women’s basketball team earn Rio berth RIO DE JANEIRO: The USA women’s basketball team earned a berth at the Rio 2016 Olympics by defeating Spain 77-64 in the final of the FIBA World Championships. S
uresh Raina (109 not out) played an innings of lifetime to help Chennai Super Kings to an eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of the Oppo Champions League T20 tournament at the packed Mangalam Chinnaswamy Stadium here on October 3. It was a knock to remember as Raina unleashed a flurry of shots, marked by elegance, silken touch and timing, and the Super Kings chased down Knight Riders’ total of 180 for six that was built around Gautam Gambhir’s knock of 80 even as left-arm spinner Pawan Negi picked up five wickets. The Super Kings finished the match in the 19th over, making 185 for two. The Super Kings thus regained the trophy they had last won in 2010 in South Africa while also ending Knight Riders’ winning streak of 14 matches and picking up the winner’s purse of $2.5 million. IPL champions Knight Riders received $1.3 million. Thanks to Raina’s superb innings, the Super Kings were never in trouble despite the loss
On the same day, the women’s 4x400m relay team emerged champions for the fourth consecutive time in the Asian Games. The quartet of Priyanka Panwar, Tintu Luka, Mandeep Kaur and M R Poovamma won an easy race in 3:28.68 to improve upon the earlier Games record of 3:29.02 which was also in the name of the gold-winning Indian team in 2010. Much later, Manju’s hammer throw bronze was upgraded to silver after Zhang was stripped of the gold.
The Indian hockey team won the gold medal in Asian Games after 16 years.

ber 7. “It’s very difficult to win these championships,” Auriemma was quoted as saying on the official Rio 2016 website. “I’ m really proud of our team. These guys make a great sacrifice, because they just finished playing in their own league. It’s a tremendous sacrifice that they made for their country, and I can’t be more proud of them,” said Auriemma. The USA’s men and women are so far the only teams to qualify for the Rio 2016 basketball tournaments. — IANS
T
he Indian men’s hockey team returned home on October 4 from Incheon to a heroes’ welcome, with fans turning out in large numbers to receive the Asian Games champions. Teary-eyed and overjoyed fans hugged and cheered the players and support staff as they stepped out of the Indira Gandhi international airport. The team got for India its third Asian Games gold — and qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics Games. Goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, the hero in the thrilling final
against eight-time champions and holders Pakistan, was the most sought after at the airport. Sreejesh, who made two brilliant saves in shootouts after regulation play ended 1-1 to help India clinch the title after 16 long years, reiterated there was no pressure on the team in the final. “There was no pressure on us in the final against Pakistan. We were confident of winning. “Captain Sardar Singh said the team worked hard and deserved to be champions. “I am proud of my team mates. Thanks to all the players, this win wouldn’t have been possible,” he said.
