ardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis - Indians are facing an unhealthy future burdened with a slew of lifestyle diseases. But instead of expensive medication and therapy, the cure lies in making exercise a compulsory part of everyday life, health experts say. “Indians are increasingly leading a sedentary and machine-dependent life, which may seem comfortable but has extremely adverse effects on health,” said T.S. Kler from Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. Kler said with increasingly hectic lifestyles, most people in urban areas nowadays do not walk to the neighborhood store but rather order groceries on phone for home delivery or drive down.

MELBOURNE: Eating a healthy diet during adolescence could reverse the junk-food cravings in males but not females, reveals a fascinating research. The study showed that intensity of junk food cravings depends a lot on mother’s diet during late pregnancy. “Our research suggests that too much junk food consumed late in pregnancy for humans has the potential to be more harmful to the child than excess junk food early in the pregnancy,” said Jessica Gugusheff, post-doctoral researcher at University of Adelaide in Australia.

“And the President certainly considers it a foreign policy priority to continue to strengthen that relationship,” he said. Asked about the future of the illegal immigrants after a US court stayed the operation of Obama’s executive action to temporarily protect from deportation about five million illegal immigrants, including thousands of Indians, Earnest said they were working through the legal system. “We continue to be working through the legal system to appeal the ruling of the district court judge that prevented the implementation of some aspects of the President’s immigration executive actions,” he said.
“Importantly, it also indicates that if excess junk food was consumed by the mother in those early stages of pregnancy, there may be a chance to reduce those negative effects on the baby by eating a healthy diet in late pregnancy,” Gugusheff said. The junk food preference is believed to result from a desensitisation of the normal reward system (the opioid and dopamine signalling pathway) fuelled by highly palatable high fat, high sugar diets. Offspring with less sensitive reward systems need more fat and sugar to get the same “good feeling”.

Modi comes to farmers’ rescue Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces higher compensation for crop damage and eases criteria to avail government support IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on April 8 said farmers would be eligible for input subsidy if 33 percent of their crop has been damaged against the prevailing norm. According to the prevailing yardstick, the farmers are eligible for such subsidy over crop damage of 50 percent or more. Making the announcement during the launch of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana here, Modi said the input subsidy given to distressed farmers would be enhanced by 50 percent of the existing amounts. This was a major departure from the incremental changes in input subsidy that had been made hitherto, he said. Expressing concern over the problems faced by farmers due to abnormal weather conditions over the past year, the prime minister said helping farmers in such time of distress was

The manager of the store in Goa’s Candolim village, where union Minister Smriti Irani has alleged a CCTV camera was intrusively placed near the trial room, will be questioned by the crime branch officials on the second successive day, it added. “Fabindia has been in touch with the investigating team at Goa in respect to providing a direction for the appearance of all 15 officers, including the MD and CEO.” The company also said that the statements of three of the Fabindia officials had already been recorded by the investigating authorities. Four junior employees of Fabindia were arrested but released on bail a day later by a trial court after the police could not conclusively prove that the employees had tweaked the CCTV’s angle at the trial room where the minister was trying out clothes. The quartet were booked under IPC sections 354C (voyeurism), 509 (intrusion into privacy) and IT Act section 66E (capturing, publishing image of private area of any person without his/her consent).

our responsibility, and, therefore, the government has sent teams of central ministers to affected areas to assess the extent of damage. The union and state governments, the banks and insurance
companies would all do their utmost to provide relief to the farmers, he said. The Prime Minister said that he has also asked banks to restructure loans of affected farmers and instructed insurance companies
to pro-actively settle their claims. “Second important decision we have taken is to raise the parameters for helping him (farmers). The amount of compensation has been increased to 1.5 times. If earlier, he

was getting `100 as compensation, now he will get `150, if it was `100,000, he will get `150,000 — a 50 percent increase,” he said. Farmers, the Prime Minister said, have suffered a lot on account of natural calamities. “Last year, it was due to less rainfall and this year due to unseasonal rainfall and hailstorm”, Modi said, adding that he took a review of the crop damage with ministers sent to undertake on the spot assessment. Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh had said a day before that unseasonal rains and hailstorms have damaged crops in about 113 lakh hectares of area in the country. On providing higher compensation to the affected farmers, Modi said, “(it) will impose a heavy burden on the exchequer but it is important to help them as they are in distress”. “We have to worry about the farmer of India, who faces problems due to unseasonal rains,” Modi said.

Asked about any remaining Indians, sources said 4100 Indians had registered with the Indian mission in Yemen and most of them are out. The government may continue the evacuation by sea route for some more time, they added. Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh, who oversaw the rescue operation of Indians in Djibouti, was at Sanaa to assess the ground situation. India had also received requests from 26 countries including the US, Bangladesh and Iraq for assistance in evacuating their nationals from the strife-torn country. riorating situation across Yemen. Yemen has been witnessing fierce battle between Saudi-led coalition and Shiite rebels, who have battled their way into various cities Yemen including in the former stronghold of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi who has fled overseas.
NEW DELHI: Union minister General V. K. Singh ran into a fresh row this week as he was criticized by several political parties for describing the media as ‘presstitutes’. Singh had reportedly commented that evacuation operation in Yemen was looking less exciting than going to Pakistan high commission for Pakistan Day celebrations. As a section of the media reported the issue, Singh later tweeted: “Friends what do you expect from presstitutes...” The BJP has distanced itself from his remarks.

Creating a new face web Indian-American trio creates system to monitor vitals by looking at faces

ndian-American researchers from Rice University have created a touch-free system that uses a video camera to monitor the vital signs of patients just by looking at their faces. The team of graduate student Mayank Kumar and professors Ashok Veeraraghavan and Ashutosh Sabharwal created the system that will let doctors diagnose patients from a distance with special attention paid to those in low-resource settings. The technique, called DistancePPG, can measure a patient’s pulse and breathing just by analyzing the changes in one’s skin color over time. Where other camerabased systems have been challenged by low-light conditions, dark skin tones and movement, DistancePPG relies on algorithms that correct for those variables. “DistancePPG will be particularly helpful to monitor premature infants for whom blood pressure cuffs or wired probes can pose a threat,” said Mayank Kumar, the project’s lead graduate researcher. The wires monitor babies’ pulses and heart rate. “The wires are not a problem. The problem is that the babies would roll or their mothers need to take care of them and the wires are taken off and put back on,” Mayank Kumar said. That could potentially damage the infants’ delicate skin. The existing techniques worked fine in
WASHINGTON: Vijay Chokalingam, the older brother of Indian-American star of Fox sitcom The Mindy Project, claims he pretended to be black to get admission into a medical school back in 1998 and 1999. Chokalingam, a self-professed “Indian-American frat boy” with a 3.1 GPA, claims that when he initially applied to medical schools he found himself wait-listed at University of Pennsylvania, Washington University and Mt. bright rooms but there were three challenges. The first was the technique’s difficulty in detecting color change in darker skin tones. Second, the light was not always bright enough. The third and perhaps hardest problem was that patients sometimes move. The Rice team solved these challenges by adding a method to average skin-color change signals from different areas of the face and an
Top physics honor for ‘future Einstein’ LONDON: An Indian-origin teenaged student in Britain has won a top prize and 500 pounds for his research on Albert Einstein’s special relativity theory. The project won Pratap Singh the Institute of Physics (IOP) prize at the National Science and Engineering Competition. His research will now be published in international journal Physics Education. “I have always been very interested in physics. So when the time came for my research project - a year-long opportunity we get at our school to study any topic of our choosing — I, of course, wanted to do something in physics,” the 15year-old student of The Perse School, Cambridge said. “I am especially happy that over the course of this project, I was able to bring together the theory, create a mathematical model, and using just school physics lab equipment, build an apparatus to observe relativistic time dilation,” Pratap said. algorithm to track a subject’s nose, eyes, mouth and whole face. “Our key finding was that the strength of the skin-color change signal is different in different regions of the face, so we developed a weighted-averaging algorithm,” Mayank Kumar explained. It improved the accuracy of derived vital signs, rapidly expanding the scope, viability, reach and utility of camera-based vital-sign monitoring.
By incorporating tracking to compensate for movement — even a smile — DistancePPG perceived a pulse rate to within one beat per minute, even for diverse skin tones under varied lighting conditions. According to researchers, they expect the software to find its way to mobile phones, tablets and computers so people can reliably measure their own vital signs whenever and wherever they choose.
WASHINGTON: An Indian-origin woman from California, nicknamed the “Bombshell Bandit” and convicted of robbing four banks in three US states, has been sentenced to 66 months in prison. Sandeep Kaur, 24, of Union City, California, was sentenced in the federal district court in St. George in the US state of Utah on April 7. Kaur’s crime spree began in California and ended after robbing the US Bank in the city of St. George, and leading police officers on a high-speed pursuit to Nevada, where she was arrested.

he Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) welcomed the passage by the US House of a bill that would reformulate how physicians are reimbursed for Medicare, a government health insurance for seniors over 65. If approved by the Senate, the legislation would repeal the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula currently in use. The SGR formula places a cap on spending for physicians services. “We are extremely delighted and grateful to the US Congress for passing this historic measure,” said AAPI President Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar urging the US Senate to take up the bill and pass it without delay. Members of AAPI, the largest ethnic organization of physicians, representing over 100,000 physicians, fellows and students of Indian origin in the US, has been lobbying for the repeal of SGR formula for years.
AAPI president Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar urges the US Senate to pass the SGR bill soon.
The passage of SGR bill came March 26 as AAPI was holding its Legislative Day on Capitol Hill to advocate and raise their voices for the larger physician community in the US, according to a media release. In her keynote address Assistant Secretary of State, Nisha Desai Biswal, the Obama administration’s point person for South Asia,
praised the Indian American physicians and the broader diaspora community for their role in fostering India-U.S. partnership. “AAPI has been a tremendous organization for what you do here in the United States and for what you do in India and for what you do to improve and extend the USIndia relationship,” the Assistant Secretary of State said.

End of a legacy Money Order goes the telegram way India Post quietly discontinues the money order service — an integral part of the department since 1880

A
135-year-old legacy comes to an end! Like in the case of the telegram, India Post has quietly discontinued the traditional money order service, which was an integral part of the department since 1880, facilitating pan-India door-delivery of funds to a payee from over 155,000 post offices. In an era of instant communications, the traditional money transfer facility has made way for an electronic version, which was introduced in October 2008, thanks to the proliferation of mobile telephony and data communications in the country through the internet - 18 months after they led to the demise of the telegram. “Yes, the traditional money order
as we know it has been discontinued,” said Shikha Mathur Kumar, deputy director general for finance with India Post based in the national capital. “What we have now are electronic money orders, or eMO, and instant money orders, or iMO, systems,” Kumar told IANS. “Both these are much faster and simpler means to remit money.” The iMO system, according to India Post, provides instant money order service for amounts ranging from `1,000 to `50,000. An instant, web-based system, money can be remitted by designated iMO post offices - where an electronic version of a form is filled along with an identity proof.
Once the money is transferred electronically, along with one of the 33 standard messages that can be chosen by the remitter, the payee
along with 21 standard messages. It is booked at a post office and delivered pan-India from all delivery post offices. This can also be tracked on the India Post website. The money can also be credited to the savings bank of a payee. In the case of eMO, money is paid at the door-step of a payee — from `1 to `5,000 — within a day,
some sadness as well. “I would send money through money orders to my family in a village Madhya Pradesh,” recalled K. Abdulhussein, a retired printing manager, now settled in Mumbai. “My folks back home would wait
for it. In fact, the village postman was an important man. But what happens now,” he wondered. When the new, electronic system of money order was explained, Abdulhussein said that the move was expected. “People today have two bank accounts — a salary account and a personal account. Then there are mobile phones. So the old system had to go.” A similar sentiment was shared by R.R. Pandya, a retired 80-year-old banker in Mumbai, who also recalled having regularly sent funds through the traditional money order system to his parents in Gujarat. “They were more comfortable dealing with the friendly neighborhood postman. You had this option of sending money with messages. So, during marriages, we would send `11, `21, `51 — along with congratulatory messages.”
Rediscovering Gandhi in the globalized age Has repackaging has transformed Gandhi the mass leader into a facade which only exists but dissipates? RAJDEEP PATHAK, NEW DELHI
I
t’s almost a month since British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond visited India, a few days before Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was unveiled at Parliament Square in London in the presence of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Call it a coincidence, the visit was appropriately timed on March 12, the day 85 years ago when Gandhi launched his mass satyagraha movement from Sabarmati in Gujarat to the banks of the Dandi to break the unjust salt law
that, to a large extent, signalled the beginning of the end of the British Raj in India. It was at this point of time Gandhi drew world sympathy in this (non-violent) battle for ‘right against might’. One could argue that though the mass civil disobedience movements
led by Gandhi to end the monopoly of the British Empire upon the Indians did not produce a constitutional change, it demonstrated that ordinary Indians had the power to drive events. In several parts of India, nationalists succeeded in weakening the forcefully estab-
lished structures. Moreover, people began to defy — and challenge — the injustices. In the 67 years after Gandhi’s death that separate us from him, humanity has witnessed breathtaking achievements in science and technology and even the texture and rhythm of our life have been altered. Some see it as a model of development; others perceive it as a race against time. As India celebrates the 100 years of Gandhi’s return from South Africa (1915-2015) and gears up for the centenary celebrations of the historic ‘Champaran Satyagraha’ in 2017, the satyagrahi Gandhi seems to be little awed by the dynamism of the events that are to unfold as the clock progresses. For the Gandhi who returned in 1915 saw India as a whole and not in parts, if not externally to the world, yet too demanding.
No country today seems to have been left untouched by the phenomenon of violence. The world because of frequent confrontations and violent eruptions despite the rapid and globalised progress - has become a one physical unit, but not an integrated entity. While rediscovering Gandhi in this globalized era, it will be apt to realize that the spirit and legacy of Gandhi demand bold, courageous and connected initiatives which reach the last man in society. The spiritual Gandhi has today become not only a national leader but a missionary of civilization. Or is it that the repackaging has transformed this mass leader into a facade which only exists but dissipates? (Rajdeep Pathak is programme executive at New Delhi’s Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti. t least 20 smugglers of red sanders — a rare wood with huge demand in the international market — were gunned down by police on April 7 in two gunfights in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district, police said. The police opened fire after they came under attack by the smugglers in Seshachalam forest in two places within a radius of one km in Chandragiri mandal of Chittoor, about 500 kilometer from Hyderabad. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Task Force) M. Kanta Rao told IANS that over 100 smugglers and laborers helping them attacked policemen, forcing them to open fire in self defense. He said the incident happened between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. While 11 men were killed at Pacchinodu Banda, nine were gunned down near Etagunta. The officer said they were yet to identify those killed but they were all believed to be from neighboring Tamil Nadu. Classified as endangered in Inter-

HYDERABAD: Police shot dead five “terror accused” as they tried to escape from their custody in Telangana’s Warangal district on April 7 when they were being brought to Hyderabad, police said. Policemen said they opened fire when the accused tried to snatch a weapon from a policeman in the vehicle near Pemburti in Jangaon mandal of Warangal district, about 80 km from here. Viqaruddin Ahmed and his four associates, involved in the killing of two policemen and several other extremist offenses, were killed in the incident that took place between 10 and 10.20 a.m. A police official said the accused attacked policemen and tried to snatch weapons when the vehicle was stopped to enable them to attend nature’s call. However, rights groups and Muslim organizations refused to buy the police story and sought CBI probe in the killings. The Muslim representatives would meet Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. hristians in Kerala visited churches on April 5 to attend the Easter mass and returned homes for the sumptuous Easter breakfast. While some people went to churches for a pre-sunrise Easter mass, others turned up after sunrise. The Easter service ends in most churches when the priest offers a piece of cake. At some places, a teaspoon of wine is first served. Starting from Palm Sunday last week, Christians, who form nearly a quarter of Kerala’s 33 mil-
lion people, were busy with rituals and festivities associated with the Holy Week (also known as Passion Week), which ended with Sunday’s morning mass. After the mass, the most important event of the day is the family getting together for breakfast. The menu is mostly traditional — appam (rice flour mixed with toddy), chicken stew and beef roast. At some places, duck is the important non-vegetarian dish. There are also steamed bananas, egg roast and cake. Hotels and resorts too offer a wide variety of Easter delicacies.

fter reaching what he described as a “historic understanding” with Iran to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon, US President Barack Obama is making an all-out bid to sell the deal at home and abroad. In calls leaders of the Republican-controlled Congress as also allies abroad, Obama and his men stressed that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. And if there is backsliding, there will be no deal”. The next three months will be used to finalize the technical details for “a lasting, comprehensive solution that verifiably ensures the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme”, he said. Iran reached last week. The deal, he claimed, was “both comprehensive and long term” and “meets our core objectives of cutting off every pathway that Iran could take to develop a nuclear weapon”. He echoed his belief that a diplomatic resolution is by far the best option, and promised to continue to fully brief Congress and the American people on the substance and progress of the negotiations in the months to come. Obama said there were really three options for dealing with Iran’s nuclear programme: bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities; abandoning negotiations and hoping for the best with sanctions; or a robust and verifiable deal. NEW YORK: Celebrity dermatologist Dr Fredric Brandt, a pioneer in the use of Botox has died aged 65. Dr Brandt — called the Baron of Botox — was found dead at his Florida home in what police are calling a suicide. He apparently hanged himself on April 5 and foul play is not suspected, Miami police spokeswoman Frederica Burden said. Dr Brandt’s long-time publicist, Jacquie Tractenberg, said he had been suffering from depression. Recently, she said, he had been upset by a thinly-veiled portrayal of him by actor Martin Short on the Netflix show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. “It definitely bothered him. It was a very mean portrayal,” she said, but she added: “He didn’t kill himself because of that one particular show.” In the Tina Fey show, comedian Martin Short plays a dermatologist who closely resembles Dr Brandt, including a shock of platinum blond hair and fair skin.

Obama called a sceptical Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to tell him that the deal represented significant progress toward a solution that prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and emphasized US commitment to Israel. The Israeli leader, however, insisted that the current framework would threaten the survival of Israel. He also suggested the deal would legitimize Iran’s nuclear programme and not block its path to a bomb, but instead pave its way. Obama on April 3 spoke with King Hamad al Khalifa of Bahrain, Amir Sabah al Sabah of Kuwait, Amir Tamim al Thani of Qatar and Crown Prince Mohammed al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates to share details of the deal.

The graceful choreography was suitably balanced with an interlude of Swahili which whetted spectators appetite for more action. They whistled, cheered and clapped thunderously as the suave Saif Ali Khan introduced the captains of the eight teams to the sounds of their team’s anthems. The loudest cheers went up for Chennai Super Kings skipper M.S. Dhoni. When defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ leading man Gautam Gambhir came in holding aloft the champions’ trophy, they went wild. Gambhir put the trophy back in play, in a symbolic gesture that set the ball rolling for the one-and-ahalf-month competition on the 22-yard strip. A synergy of peppy modern sounds, rhythms of traditional Bengali instruments including the dhaak (drum) and strong acoustics gave a feel of world music and calm. Shahid’s grand arrival on the grounds in a bright orange sleeveless shirt and shiny golden dhoti with a trendy pair of shades, atop a bike jolted the audience back into the promised “unforgettable” jamboree.

Usman said he had promised the ace cricketer that he would cook at his wedding whenever it takes place. A team of four cooks has been dispatched to New Delhi where they would cook shami kebabs, galawat kebabs, mutton korma and mutton biryani for the guests. The high point would be the kebabs wrapped in crusty paratha’s (Indian flatbread), served with onion rings and spicy dhaniya chutney, a member of Tundey’s team said.

‘Tough to find good roles’
VHP calls for ban on Kamal Haasan’s film CHENNAI: Members of Hindu Vishwa Parishad (VHP) have called for a ban on actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasanstarrer Tamil drama Uttama VilKamal Haasan lain, claiming it will affect the religious sentiments of Hindi people. In their statement to the commissioner of police on April 6, the group alleged that the song Iraniyan Nadagam, about the disparaged conversation between Prahalad and Hiranyakashipu, will hurt the sentiments of Hindus.
Since her comeback in films like Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharavatha, Madhoo mostly acted in a mother’s role HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI
Y
esteryear actor Madhoo has starred in three southern films since her comeback a couple of years ago. She says it’s tough to succeed and find good roles upon return, especially when boundaries are set. “I still see myself as a heroine, who need not always be 18 or 20. When I say heroine, I’m referring to the main character in a movie. Why can’t a heroine be a middleaged lady? The roles that easily come by are of the mother of the hero or heroine,” Madhoo told IANS. “It’s a huge battle in my mind if I want to take up such roles, but I’ve understood that there can be something nice about these roles too, and I need to look
for them. I think it’s difficult to find good roles when you set boundaries and rules. Hence, I’ve duly avoided all that because I’m keen on continuing working and not remain too critical about the roles,” she said. Since her comeback in films such as Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharavatha and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Madhoo has mostly featured in a mother’s role. “I’m sure none of my contemporaries or senior heroines like Sridevi, Madhuri, Juhi and Raveena want to play mother roles. But if the protagonist of the movie happens to be a mother, I don’t think any of us would have a problem with that,” said Madhoo, who doesn’t mind playing a mother on screen because she’s one in real life as well.
Shruti roped in for Ajith’s next CHENNAI: Shruti Haasan has been roped in for Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar’s yet-untitled next film, which will be helmed by Siruthai Siva and produced by A.M. Rathnam. “Shruti Haasan has been finalized as the heroine. The makers are looking for another actress to play the role of Ajitha’s sister in the movie. The pre-production work is already underway. The regular shooting will start from May,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. The source also confirmed that actress Bindu Mad-
havi won’t be playing Ajith’s sister. Model-turned-actor Kabir Singh is in talks to play the antagonist, while the rest of the cast is being finalized. Anirudh Ravichander has been signed on to compose the tunes.
Raashi is not choosy on films IANS, CHENNAI
A
ctress Raashi Khanna, who is basking in the success of her latest Telugu release Jil, says she has no strategy when it comes to choosing projects. A film’s script is the deciding factor for her. “No matter what strategies you make, if you don’t get the right script, everything is going to go down,” Raashi told IANS. “Even if I wish to work with somebody, they should be willing
to cast me first. So strategies really don’t work. I just believe in working hard and whatever comes my way, I try and give it my Raashi Khanna best,” she said. While she started her Telugu film career with a relatively small and independent film, the ones that followed have been bigger; both in terms of the actors involved and the budget.
Actor Sonal gets a role in ‘Size Zero’
Madhoo is best remembered for her portrayal in Maniratnam's Roja (1992).
“In Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharavatha, I was the mother of the heroine, but I loved my role because it was backed by a separate story that runs parallel with the main story. My story may have been small, but I was the protagonist in it,” she said. What concerns Madhoo is when she’s asked to play a mother’s role with no purpose.
“When most directors come with the mother’s role, what they mean is that I have no role to play apart from being in favor of or against the relationship between the hero and heroine,” she said. “I love exploring other dimensions of human beings. In my movie ‘Pehchaan’, I played a bar girl who does things usually actresses don’t like doing.”
CHENNAI: Actress Sonal Chauhan has landed an important role in Arya and Anushka Shetty starrer Tamil-Telugu bilingual Size Zero, a romantic comedy about the travails Sonal Chauhan of an obese girl. Sonal is expected to join the sets next week. “Sonal will be playing the second lead. It’s a brief role but very important from the perspective of the story. She will start shooting from next week,” a source told IANS. Anushka plays an obese woman in Size Zero, which will be helmed by Prakash Kovelamudi.
FILM REVIEW | TAMIL
‘Nannbenda’: Where are the jokes? Film: Nannbenda; Cast: Udhayanidhi Stalin, Santhanam, Nayantara, Rajendran, Sherin, Karunakaran and Pooja Ramachandran; Director: Jagadeesh; Rating: **
I
n the opening scene of Nannbenda, we see Sathya (Udhay) breaking out of a prison, and we’re explained why in the flashback. There’s a sense of curiosity and some element of suspense as you wonder what the hero of a romantic comedy could’ve possibly done to end up here. You wonder maybe this is a suspense comedy, going by all the jokes in the trailer, and patiently hope for the story to take you by surprise. And as we get to know about Sathya’s past, everything that was built initially falls flat, forcing you to quickly come to the conclusion that the suspense angle doesn’t quite work in this comedy. In the flashback, you sit back
and wait for the jokes. After all, this is the movie featuring the hit combination of Santhanam and Udhay, who earlier starred in the extremely funny Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (Ok Ok). You wait for the jokes more so because the makers promoted Nannbenda as the sequel to Ok Ok, and that, I think, was their biggest mistake. The jokes never come and the few funny lines you may come across aren’t funny enough. In a film like Nannbenda, which
follows the same template used by hit comedies such as Boss Engira Bhaskaran and Theeya Vella Seiyyanum Kumaru, ideally, one shouldn’t expect any story, but one needs something to get entertained, especially when the darn movie runs for nearly two and half hours. There’s a sub-plot about Santhanam’s romance with Sherin, whose character is desperate to go on a honeymoon.

Theatre makes you disciplined: Shweta Actress Shweta Tripathi, who chose to debut with a film titled Haraamkhor, says she is attracted to ‘dark roles’ RADHIKA BHIRANI, MUMBAI
O
ff to the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) for the screening of her debut feature film Haraamkhor — a title an actress with quintessential Bollywood preferences perhaps won’t prefer — debutante Shweta Tripathi hopes the international film jamboree makes her stronger about her choice of the evolving offbeat genre in Indian cinema. Haraamkhor, a debut feature by director Shlok Sharma, features Hindi cinema’s acting powerhouse Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a school teacher who enters a forbidden relationship of sorts with his student, essayed by the vibrant 29year-old Shweta. “The festival is going to be a platform for me to showcase my work. At the events, I’m looking forward to interact with talent from all over
Shweta Tripathi
the world, watch cinema that will inspire me and motivate me to carry on and be strong about my choices,” Shweta told IANS before flying off to Los Angeles, for her film’s screening. IFFLA will also screen her short film Safar.
The journey to films has been “very eventful” for Shweta — the daughter of Delhi’s former chief secretary P.K. Tripathi — who came to Mumbai eight years ago and not in the pursuit of becoming an actor. But love for theatre since her childhood days brought this National Institute of Fashion Technology graduate closer to the world that she’s now ready to invade with her talent. Shweta heads a theatre group which goes by the quirky name of AllMyTea Productions. She says “theatre makes you disciplined, makes your foundation strong and helps you explore”. Films, of course, are a different medium, but for the actress, her “choices are shaped by what I like”. And while she maintains that she’s a “very happy, positive person”, she is attracted to and excited by “dark roles, a bit twisted and with a disturbed past”.
‘Main Hoon...Killer’ to release on April 24 IANS, MUMBAI
F
aisal Saif’s movie, which was earlier titled Main Hoon Rajinikanth has now been changed to Main Hoon (Part-Time) Killer and the filmmaker says the film is set to release on April 24. “I am extremely happy that my film is now all set to release on April 24,” Saif told IANS. After the long running court battle between superstar Rajinikanth
and Varsha Productions, the title of the comedy-spoof Main Hoon Rajinikanth was changed to Main
Hoon (Part-Time) Killer. The film made news when the south Indian superstar moved a court and it put on hold the film’s title regarding the personality rights. The film is a comic-spoof thriller where a CBI officer named Rajinikanth mistakenly creates havoc in other people’s life and goes on a killing spree. Main Hoon... stars noted south Indian villain Adithya Menon as Rajinikanth.
No biopic on Salman: Arbaaz MUMBAI: Filmmaker Arbaaz Khan is not convinced about the idea of making a biopic on his brother superstar Salman Khan as he feels there is nothing new about Salman that he can show in the biopic. The Dabangg filmmaker, when asked if he’d make a biopic on Salman’s life, said: “It may happen, but personally I would not want to do a biopic on somebody who is existing.” He sees no point in a Salman Khan biopic. “Generally, the biopics are made
on the personalities about whom much is not known. But if someone who is already popular and everyone knows about his life then I don’t see a point in making a biopic on his life unless you are telling something new about that person,” Arbaaz said. Further, talking about a biopic being made on Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he said it will be a challenge for its director Neeraj Pandey. “I think Dhoni’s biopic will be a big challenge for Neeraj Pandey,” he said.
Kissing not my ‘X’ factor: Emraan NEW DELHI: The ‘serial kisser’ tag does not seem to leave actor Emraan Hashmi, but he says since every actor is kissing on the big screen, it should not be considered his ‘X’ factor. “Kissing is the most done thing right now for me. Every actor is doing it nowadays. So, it can’t be a kind of ‘X’ factor for me,” Emraan told IANS. The 36-year-old, who was in the capital to promote his forthcoming sci-fi film Mr. X with his co-star Amyra Dastur, feels his movies are now catering to the family audience, because of which newcomers are not worried about pairing with him. “Now, I guess newcomers will be less intimidated to work with me and they would know that family audience could watch it. So as I posed for so
many (intimate) scenes (in past films), there are only a couple of them in this one,” added the actor, who has locked lips with actresses in films like Murder and The Dirty Picture. However Amyra, who made her debut with 2013 Issaq did not seem satisfied with Emraan’s answer, and gushed: “I think he will always be known as a serial kisser.”
‘Detective…’: Baffling, beguiling, bewitching and provocative
A
s layer after layer of intrigue and mystery are peeled off this Chinese puzzle of a movie, you are finally left staring wide-eyed and open-mouthed at a work of wondrous art. Exquisite in form and at times deeply impenetrable in content, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (DBB) is what a whodunit was meant to be all along. DBB is a stubbornly placid tale of an iconic detective who seems to know more about Kolkata and its underworld than any authority of or on the metropolis in the 1940s. The film’s writers, and I do mean Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar Bannerjee, and not Sharadindu Badhopadhyay who penned the original detective novels, lend a gripping flow to the narrative by bending the
Film: Detective Byomkesh Bakshy; Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari, Swastika Mukherjee, Divya Menon, Neeraj Kabi; Director: Dibakar Banerjee; Rating: ****(4 Stars) plot into shapes which are not recognizable or definable by the rules of the genre. Smells, sights and specially sounds emerge from the storytelling with a casual flair for making the obvious look subtle and the innocuous, dangerous. Wickedly misleading and yet resolutely clear-headed even as the detective-hero (Sushant) and his reluctant assistant Ajit Banerjee (Anand) gambol from one suspect to another to piece together
a mystery that has no reference point and certainly no history, this is a film that requires us to abandon all attempts to be one-up on the
narrative. We have no choice but to go with the writer’s whimsical flow. From the seeming ebbing and swelling of the narrative tide,
Dibakar seems to derive a huge amount of unprecedented narrative power. The film moves across a luscious labyrinth of sensuous experiences. Kolkata’s grime and sweat is captured in crumbling guest houses and rickety warehouses where crime is a desirable reality only because the other option is ennui. A scintillating synthesis of the cerebral and the sensual, DBB is an enigmatic whodunit cooked on the slow burner at a tantalizing temperature. Dibakar Banerjee’s Kolkata pulsates with a heart, soul, body and nerves of steel. This is a world whose existence the makers of Furious 7 could never imagine. It’s a difficult world to inhabit. But once you are in, you are in it for good. — Subhash K Jha

TWO INDIANS SHOT DEAD BY ROBBERS BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Two Indians have been gunned down during apparent robbery attempts in two separate incidents at gas stations in the US within 24 hours, sending shockwaves among the local population. Sanjay Patel, 39, who worked as a clerk at the gas station in New Haven in Connecticut, was shot three times in the chest and once in the hand by two masked men on April 6 night during an apparent robbery attempt. Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died an hour later. The police said they were searching for the two men as the investigation continued. Patel’s wife was pregnant with their

HICAGO, IL -Dr Hina Patel, a political neophyte, has turned out to be a dark horse in the village board race in South Barrington, a village in Cook County, Illinois. According to the Cook County Clerk’s website, she raised many eyebrows by emerging as the top vote-getter in the April 7 results of the ballot-box battle, bagging as many as 234 votes or 28.96 per cent.
Sanjay Patel first child. The New Haven Police said that a gunfire broke out at the gas station around 7:30 pm local time during the apparent robbery. Gas station-owner Raj Ali said that the robbers took Patel’s life “for a couple hundred dollars. It’s not worth it. It’s
bad.” Witnesses said they saw two masked men running from the scene after the incident. “We are looking for two people that may be involved. We don’t necessarily believe that two were firing guns. We know at least one was,” New Haven police spokesman Officer David Hartman said. The second incident took place in the US state of Illinois, where Rajesh Madala, 35, who worked at an auto gas station in a small town in Peoria, was shot and killed by an unidentified man during an apparent robbery, who was later tracked down by the police and killed in exchange of gunfire with the cops in a remote area near the town of Lowpoint.
The suspect in the killing of Madala was a white male. Residents expressed shock at the news of the killing and described Madala, known as ‘Raj’ to customers, as an “awesome guy” who was inviting and conversational to anyone who walked into the station. Robyn Williams, a clerk at the nearby General Store Bayview, said Madala always worked the mid-afternoon to night shift and was well-liked in the community. The suspect drove up to the gas station in a white car, according to materials released by the Woodford County Sheriff ’s department. The car was later tracked down to the remote area near Illinois river.
ONLINE FUND-RAISER IS SET UP FOR INJURED INDIAN STUDENT BY A STAFF WRITER
H
OUSTON, TX - An Indian American engineering student, critically injured in a road accident in Texas, has been lying at a rehabilitation center here in a vegetative state for four months, and his family has set up an online fund-raiser to help cover the costs of his long-term care. Akshay Jain, 22, sustained a severe traumatic brain injury on November 30 when his car collided with a pick-up truck when he and his four friends were returning home after their Thanksgiving break in New Orleans, Louisiana. His four friends were soon released from the hospital after being treated for their injuries. But ever since the tragic accident, Jain has undergone a series of surgeries and therapies, and he still remains in a vegetative state, reliant on feeding and tracheotomy tubes. “It is hard to see a young high-achiever in this condition as the accident has crashed all his dreams,” said his brother-in-law Gagan Parakh. Akshay may have lasting problems with his movement, learning, or speaking, his family fears. At the rehabilitation where he was moved to recently after a series of surgeries at Memorial
Akshay Jain Hermann Hospital, doctors are working out on various therapies--physical, speech, language, occupational and counseling. Treatment is focused both on the brain as well as the body. However, the fight against unconsciousness is still on. “It is a long-term treatment and as a family we are taking it one day at a time. In the last one month, we have moved back and forth between TIRR (rehabilitation center) to Memorial Hermann three times,” said Jain’s mother, who has been at his side since the accident. After his treatment at the rehabilitation center is completed, Jain will be moved to a nursing home where only 15-20 days of coverage is available and then the family plans
to take him back to India if he remains unable to go back to school and finish his studies. With Jain’s medical insurance expiring in August, the family has set up an online fundraiser at YouCaring.com to help cover the costs of long-term care. Jain’s family is very thankful to the doctors, nurses and the Indian American community for their assistance and help. Indian Consul General in Houston Parvataneni Harish visits Jain at the rehab center every week to make sure everything is being taken care of and that his mother, who speaks only Hindi, does not face any linguistic issues. Jain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar in 2014. He moved to the US to pursue a Ph.D. in chemical engineering soon after his graduation. His innovative engineering designs have been recognized with the Director’s Silver Medal and the Award for Outstanding Research. “We have been told by university that if required, they can explore possibility to extend his visa and insurance for one more year after Aug.15, 2015, but this is something not confirmed,” Parakh said.

Zakir Hussain’s ‘Pulse of World’ entrances fans

ILWAUKEE (WI) – Zakir Hussain, renowned Indian table master, presented ‘Pulse of the World’, a fascinating fusion of Indian and Celtic music, in Milawaukee and left the 650 music aficionados spell-bound ahead of his group’s 15-city United States tour. The mesmerizing concert with all-star Indian and Celtic musicians was organized by Raag Entertainment’s Yogesh Khatri, Dinesh
Sanghvi and other partners. Hussain, a master of the tabla, an Indian percussion instrument, has won Grammy Awards and accolades from a variety of sources, and has collaborated with everyone from Yo Yo Ma to Bela Fleck. But most recently, Hussain’s interests grew to include music from the Celtic traditions. The result is a beautiful combination of Indian and Celtic instruments that intersect naturally in what may be at first unlikely similarities.
(L-R) Neil Sanghavi, Zakir Hussain & Dinesh Sanghavi Sanghvi told Hi India that everyone in the audience felt that the Irish (Celtic) touch was very unique an soothing. The idea of Celtic Connection was first featured at the London Olympics opening ceremonies and then during the performance in Dubai. It’s a jam band with a touch of the highlands when Indian ragas meet Scottish strathspeys for ‘Pulse of the World’, an evening of irresistible rhythms with Zakir Hussain.
Hussain has played with everyone from George Harrison to the Grateful Dead— laying down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (of Capercaillie fame) and Patsy Reid (formerly of the fiery band Breabach), and Ganesh Rajagopalan, a master violinist of the classical Indian Carnatic style. According to Khatri, ‘Pulse of the World’ is a freewheeling, pulse-quickening, constantly surprising fusion of Indian and Celtic sounds.

“Designers were given a common thread of colors so that the show looks as one and not fragmented,” said Mishra, who presented floral geometry in his outfits made with handmade organza fabric. The show started with Rodricks’ edgy and bold garments with an orange dress with sides open from top to bottom. Believe in fashion with minimal effort? Then dresses by brand Pero by Aneeth is a perfect example as
they seemed very easy to wear. Designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi incorporated geometric versions of floral applique work in their dresses; Bahl amalgamated traditional motifs into his evening wear with heavy zardosi work on a golden beige base. Pankaj was excited to present their collection for the first time in the finals. He said: “This is my first finale here. It felt amazing. There was so much positivity and energy on the ramp.
diti Arya, who is the proud possessor of this year’s Femina Miss India World crown, says she always wanted to represent India on an international level and that inspired her to compete in a beauty pageant. The 21-year-old model from Delhi suburb Gurgaon, who will represent India at the Miss World 2015 pageant, was enthroned as the winner of 52nd edition of the beauty pageant on March 28 at the Yash Raj Films Studio here by reigning queen Femina Miss India Koyal Rana. Aditi credits her friends with persuading her to participate in the beauty pageant. “I had always thought of representing India at an international level, if not through a beauty pageant then through other platforms such as business conferences, conclaves, events etc.

“I knew that I wanted to get there, some place where I make a statement and it becomes India’s statement. To decide if it was through the beauty pageant route or some other route — that was encouraged by my friends,” Aditi told IANS in an interview.

A perfume that smells better as you sweat Theb unique perfume delivery system releases more aroma when in contact with moisture. Hence, a person smells nicer when sweating more IANS, LONDON
I
magine applying a perfume that smells better the more you sweat as you go out to woo your girl! One such “wonder” perfume is here, say scientists at the Queen’s University, Belfast. The team from the Queen’s University Ionic Liquid Laboratories (QUILL) research centre has developed a unique perfume delivery system which releases more of its aroma when it comes into contact with moisture, meaning a person smells nicer when his sweat levels increase. This innovative perfume system has been created by tagging a raw fragrance onto an ionic liquid (salt in the form of liquid) which has no smell. The “perfumed ionic liquid” releases its aroma when it comes into contact with water, allowing more of the perfume’s scent to be released onto a person’s skin.
In addition, the perfume system also has the ability to remove the bad odors that come from sweat. The “thiol” compounds that are responsible for the bad sweat smell are attracted to the ionic liquid, attaching themselves to it and losing their potency. “Not only does it have great commercial potential and could be used in perfumes and cosmetic It has been creams, but it could also be created by used in other areas of scitagging a raw ence, such as the slow release fragrance onto of certain substances of an ionic liquid interest,” explained project leader Nimal Gunaratne in a which has no statement. smell The researchers are currently working with a perfume development company to identify a number of product ideas that could eventually be sold in the market.
Tackle summer skin problems with extra care NEW DELHI: Plagued by problems like hair loss and graying, most young women’s crowning glory is no longer their hair. With help from experts, convert the bane in your life to a boon by trying out natural solutions. According to a random survey by IANS, hair loss, dandruff, graying and split ends top the list of hair problems faced by women in their 20s. “At this age, the body undergoes lots of hormonal changes along with (sometimes stressful) landmark events happening in women’s lives, like marriage, pregnancy and job worries. “All of these events occupy a great deal of time, which means hair can go unattended. Not taking adequate care, combined with nutritional changes, can lead to havoc for hair,” said Kapil Dua, co-founder and chief hair transplant surgeon at Delhi-based AK Clinics. It is also the time when women want to look their best and stay in shape, for

which some end up doing crash dieting. Seema Saadikha, an expert in clinical nutrition, says it is one of the causes of hair loss. “Crash dieting causes nutritional deficiencies like magnesium, vitamin B12 and vitamin D3. People on diet should get their blood investigation done and consume proper nutritional supplements,” she said. Beauty and hair expert Shahnaz Husain suggests including oil in your
beauty regime for luscious locks. She says oiling the hair once a week a night before washing it off is a good idea, and using olive or pure coconut oil are conducive for healthy hair. A tip — try not to vigorously massage your head as in case of hair loss, the roots are already weak. “Use only fingertips and move the scalp in small rotary movements. If the hair is dry, shampoo twice a week. Those with oily hair should avoid oil applications. But use less shampoo. Dilute it with water and then apply,” said Husain, who also advises to keep dandruff in check as it is one of the reasons for hair loss. But you can’t battle dandruff if you don’t know its root cause!
Y
ou must exude warmth and be assertive during a job interview if you want to make a good impression, suggests a study. People who are anxious going into an interview often do not get hired, found the researchers. The study found that organizations often reject potential candidates with interview jitters who are otherwise quite capable of doing the job. Amanda Feiler and Deborah Powell from the University of Guelph, Canada, set out to establish why anxious job candidates receive lower performance ratings during an interview. They videotaped and transcribed the mock job interviews of 125
undergraduate students from a Canadian university. Ratings were obtained from 18 interviewers who gauged the interviewees’ levels of anxiety and performance. Trained raters also assessed how the interviewees expressed their anxiety through specific mannerisms, cues and traits. Feiler and Powell found that the speed at which someone talks is the only cue that both interviewers and interviewees rate as a sign of nervousness or not. The fewer words per minute people speak, the more nervous they are. Also, anxious prospective job candidates are often rated as being less assertive and exuding less interpersonal warmth. This often leads to a rejection from interviewers.

ardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis - Indians are facing an unhealthy future burdened with a slew of lifestyle diseases.
“We do not climb stairs any more, with lifts being omnipresent. Riding bicycles to work or to school is not cool in urban areas any more. Forget adults, this conditioning begins with children who prefer to stay indoors watching television or playing video games rather than spending time in the playground,” he added. Kler said regular exercise can help prevent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and type II diabetes. It also keeps the weight in check. “Incidences of coronary artery disease can be reduced substantially if people religiously takes to physical exercise. “Adequate levels of physical activity decreases the risk of a hip fracture. In fact, exercise is very crucial for maintaining good bone health,” said Dr. Rajeev Sharma from Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.

Why some women can’t say no to junk food MELBOURNE: Eating a healthy diet during adolescence could reverse the junk-food cravings in males but not females, reveals a fascinating research.
Offspring with less sensitive reward systems need more fat and sugar to get the same “good feeling”.

uling that yoga taught in elementary schools is not a gateway to Hinduism and does not violate religious freedoms, a California appeals court has allowed it to continue. “We conclude that the programme is secular. (and) does not have the primary effect of advancing or inhibiting religion, and does not excessively entangle the school district in religion,” the three-member appeals court ruled Friday. The decision by California’s 4th District Court of Appeal upheld a lower-court ruling in support of the Encinitas Union Elementary School District in San Diego, utsandiego.com reported. The school had been sued by parents who argued the school yoga programme was inherently spiritual and therefore unconstitutional. “No other court in the past 50 years has allowed public schools to lead children in formal religious rit-
uals like the Hindu liturgy of praying to, bowing to, and worshipping the sun god,” Attorney Dean Broyles, who represented the parents in the lawsuit, said in an email to UT San Diego. Yoga has been a health and wellness activity in the school district since 2012, when the Encinitasbased Sonima Foundation gave the district $2 million to add yoga to all physical education classes. Broyles sued the district on behalf of a couple and their two children, saying the programme violated the separation of church and state by endorsing Hindu religious beliefs promoted in Ashtanga yoga.
The state Superior Court sided with the district in 2013, finding that the school program had been stripped of religious overtones. The trial court noted in its decision that the district’s yoga classes “consist of instruction in performing yoga poses, breathing, and relaxation, combined with lessons in positive character traits, such as respect and empathy.” All students in the district, which includes kindergarten through sixth-grade, get two yoga classes of 30 minutes or more per week. “We are seeing tremendous results. Kids are stronger, and have more ability to focus,” Baird said.
