US targets LeT fronts, blames it for Herat attack on May 23 WASHINGTON: The United States has added various front organizations of the Pakistan based Lashkar-eTaeba (LeT) to its list of foreign terror organizations, saying the action would help cut off their funding and prevent future attacks. LeT which “has claimed responsibility for the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks was also “responsible for the May 23 attack on the Indian Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan,” the State Department said. The attack
was apparently aimed at derailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to reach out to India’s South Asian neighbors. “The designations help us cut off support and funding to LET so they can’t undertake future attacks,” State Department spokesperson Mary Harf told reporters. “Cooperation between the U.S. and India has already led to several Mumbai terrorists, including David Headley, being brought to justice,” she said. Born Daood Sayed Gilani to a Pakistani father and an American mother, the key plotter of the Mumbai attacks had changed his name to David Coleman Headley at the instance of LeT to avoid attention as he scouted targets for the attack.

The crime is punishable by up to life in prison, or death, Xinhua quoted court sources as saying. Khatallah is charged with “conspiracy to provide material support and resources to terrorists, knowing and intending that these would be used in preparation for and in carrying out a killing in the course of an attack on a federal facility, and the offense resulted in death”. according to a court statement. An earlier criminal complaint in July 2013 said the FBI believed it had evidence to charge him with murder and firing a weapon at the scene of the Benghazi attacks. Those additional charges, if formally added, could bring the death penalty.

FinMin bats for fiscal prudence Listing out the challenges before the nation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said fiscal deficit is high, inflation is beyond acceptable limits and the fallout of Iraq crisis looms large on the economy

ndicating that his maiden budget next week will not indulge in ‘mindless populism’, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on July 1 said the government would take bold decisions and pursue path of fiscal prudence to revive economy. Listing out the challenges before the country, he said fiscal deficit is high, inflation is beyond acceptable limits and the fallout of Iraq crisis looms large on the economy. “If you indulge in mindless populism you burden the exchequer... you convert yourself into a high taxation society. It does not work. Therefore if you have to follow a path of fiscal prudence, (you should) have a certain amount of discipline,” Jaitley said. Addressing a function of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, he said the rate of inflation compared to last year have
Tarun Tejpal gets bail after 8 months NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Tuesday granted bail to Tehelka founder editor Tarun Tejpal in a sexual assault case. Tejpal was arrested in Goa after a woman colleague accused him of sexually assaulting her in a hotel in November 2013. The apex court bench of Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice S.A. Bobde, granting bail to Tejpal, gave liberty to the Goa government to approach the court in case of any attempt by Tejpal to infringe the witnesses. The court has directed Tejpal to surrender his passport to the trial court if he has not done this. The Supreme Court earlier extended his interim bail in the case till July 1.

somewhat come down but was “still beyond the acceptable limits.” Inflation rose to five-month high of 6.01 percent in May and there is likelihood of prices moving up further in view of predictions of below normal monsoon. Referring to investment scenario, Jaitley said that after three-four years
of pessimism there is hope and now “bold decision-making” is possible. He further said: “You have a loss of credibility in the Indian economy. The fact that the world suspects we don’t have a stable tax regime itself has dissuaded investors.” Jaitley said India is passing through a difficult situation of high
fiscal deficit. He said populism “will be a one-way pat in the back by an ill-informed opinion and perhaps a long-term journey...we will walk into peril. That is a trap that will be difficult to get out of...,” the Minister added. “We have huge amount of food, we have no scarcity and we are in a position to manage it.”

The rocket, which took off at 9.52 a.m., was the first space mission after Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took office. ith the countrywide chorus rising for his arrest and expulsion from parliament, Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul on July 1 tendered an unconditional apology for his “deeply insensitive” rape comments even as another video surfaced showing him exhorting his partymen to kill CPI-M workers. With politicians, eminent personalities and activists baying for his head and the National Commission
for Women (NCW) seeking his expulsion from parliament, the Lok Sabha member, in a letter addressed to his party and the media, sought apology terming his comments a “gross error of judgment” and “deeply insensitive”.
‘I apologize to all of them, and particularly to all women in our society’
“Some remarks made by me have caused dismay and consternation. I apologize unreservedly for them. Whatever the provocation, those comments should never have been made,” the letter said, that by the comments, he had let down “my constituents and the people of Bengal”, his party, and “his family, including my wife and children and my parents, and my friends”. “I apologize to all of them, and particularly to all women in our society and to those in media who highlighted the issue,” said Paul.
MUMBAI: A benchmark index of Indian equities markets hit a record high of 25,789.42 points on July 2 on upcoming budget optimism, even as capital goods, automobile, metal and bank stocks rallied. The budget is to be presented on July 10. All key sectors, excluding information technology (IT), were trading in the green. Other sectors posting healthy gains were healthcare and consumer durables, oil and gas and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) scrip. The Sensex of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 25,660.57 points, was trading at 25,770.29 points around 12.30 p.m., up 253.94 points from the previous day’s close at 25,516.35 points.
BRIEFS Twist to Sunanda Pushkar’s death row NEW DELHI: The AIIMS administration on July 2 categorically denied doctor Sudhir Gupta's allegation that he was pressurized to amend the postmortem report of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. According to media reports earlier, Sudhir Gupta, head of forensics department at AIIMS, said he was pressurized by top officials to show that Pushkar's death was “natural”. Pushkar was found dead in her room at a five-star hotel in Delhi Jan 17.
Monsoon finally lashes Mumbai, Maharashtra MUMBAI: Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and large parts of coastal and western Maharashtra on July 2, providing welcome relief from the extended summer here. Though delayed by over three weeks — the normal date for onset of monsoon is June 10 — the steady downpour resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas and created disruptions in road and rail traffic within the city and outside. Traffic came to a halt or crawled at some sections in several part of the city.

Indian Marxists
at a dead end? Half a century after the formation of the Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M), the curtains are descending on what the comrades once saw as the beginning of Leftist transformation of India AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
I
n the years soon after the 1964 split in the undivided Communist Party led to the CPI-M’s birth, a senior leader of the Marxists, M. Basavapunniah, noted the Congress’ decline — the latter has always been waxing and waning — and said: “We will not feel happy if this party goes down without the emergence of a viable democratic alternative.” This overweening confidence stemmed from the belief, as spelt out by a CPI-M central committee document, that “Marxism-Leninism is a (an) inexhaustible spring that can nourish socialism’s new thrust forward”. One reason, however, why the “thrust” never materialized was that the CPI-M itself fell apart when the extremists in its ranks, the Naxalites (as Maoists were known then), left and formed their own outfit in 1969. Commenting on this “Left
deviation”, the CPI-M ruefully noted how “a section of party leaders and cadres were carried away by the Left adventurist point of view advocated by the Communist Party of China. Thus, the two successive splits (in 1964 and 1969) sapped the strength of our party”. However, the fact that notwithstanding this diminution of its strength, the CPI-M did make a recovery in the 1970s pointed to a fairly wide measure of popular support for it even if this was confined to the states of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. At the same time, the party’s gains were due more to the Congress’ follies than to its own endeavors. For instance, but for the “excesses” of the Emergency in 1975-77, it is unlikely that the CPIM would have been able to dislodge the Congress from these three states in 1977. It is the stints in power, however, especially in West Bengal, where the CPI-M had an uninter-
But for the “excesses” of the Emergency in 1975-77, it is unlikely that the CPI-M would have been able to dislodge the Congress from West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura in 1977.
Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 and introduction of market-friendly policies in India one year later gave a death blow to Leftist movement rupted 34-year reign from 1977 to 2011, which can be said to have led the party into a blind lane. The reason is that it turned out to be no different in terms of administrative aptitude or ethics from its “bourgeois” adversaries. The earlier claim, therefore, that the party was engaged in ending the “exploitation of man by man inherent in capitalist production” was no longer believed even by its own supporters. Hence, the sardonic observation of a fellow traveller, Samar Sen, editor of Fron-
tier, that if the revolution continued after 5 p.m., the workers will ask for overtime payment. It isn’t only the negation of the CPI-M’s assertion of being a party with a difference — echoes of a similar claim by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — which led to its downfall but also the fact that its cadres acquired the reputation of being hooligans, one of whom, wearing a helmet, had assaulted Mamata Banerjee (then a Congress leader) on August 16, 1990, at a prominent street crossing
in front of police and media personnel. The year is significant because, a year earlier, the Berlin Wall had fallen, denoting the terminal stage of Communism and, a year later, market-friendly policies were introduced in India. These two doctrinal and economic changes were beyond the CPI-M’s capacity to withstand. As it is, the party had been rocked by previous upheavals in the Communist world, notably by Nikita Khrushchev’s de-Stalinization speech in 1956 and by the SinoSoviet rupture at about the same time, which was behind the splits in the Indian Communist parties as well. But even if these events did not undermine the CPI-M’s belief in the veracity of “scientific socialism”, they shook the faith of a large body of its supporters in India.
Is Subramanium paying the price of political vendetta? PARMOD KUMAR, NEW DELHI
G
opal Subramanium has withdrawn his consent to be a judge of the Supreme Court. This chapter is now almost over unless the apex court collegium takes a course which has no precedent as of now. This is not the first time that a collegium recommendation has been returned. In the past also, names for appointment as judges were returned by the government in the wake of unfavorable reports by the Intelligence Bureau (IB). But what distinguishes Subramanium’s case from the others is that previously, there were no smear campaigns by way of selective leaks questioning the integrity of a person recommended to be a judge of the apex court. That the recommendation of Subramanium would not have brought cheer to some quarters was never in doubt from day one. It was hard for some to forget the way he carried out his responsibilities as amicus curiae in Sohrabiddin Sheikh staged-shootout case. On May 15, the IB gave Subra-

That the recommendation of Subramanium would not have brought cheer to some quarters was never in doubt from day one. manium a clean chit — just a day before the results of the general election were declared. Then, a CBI report cast a shadow on his suitability. On May 22, the IB
endorsed this report. Based on these reports, the government segregated Subramanium’s name from the four recommended by the collegium and returned it to the chief
justice. This has been questioned by none other than former Chief Justice M.N.Venkatachaliah, who has said that if the government differed, it should have sent the entire file back to the chief justice for reconsideration by the collegium. The question is: Did the government take the consent of the chief justice — may be oral — before segregating Subramanium’s name or was it a unilateral decision? If it is the latter then it is not in conformity with the verdict of the apex court in a 1993 case out of which the collegium system flowed. The apex court, by its October 6, 1993, judgment, had said: “In exceptional cases alone, for stated strong cogent reasons, disclosed to the chief justice of India, indicating that the recommendee is not suitable for appointment, that appointment recommended by the chief justice of India may not be made.” It added: “However, if the stated reasons are not accepted by the chief justice of India and the other judges of the Supreme Court who have been consulted in the matter, on reiteration of the recommenda-
tion by the chief justice of India, the appointment should be made as a healthy convention.” With Subramanium withdrawing his consent, the question of the apex court collegium reiterating its recommendation appears to be a remote possibility but the question is whether the material relied upon by the government to return the recommendation to appoint him a judge is cogent or not. The first allegation is that Subramanium arranged a meeting between CBI officers engaged with the 2G investigation and counsel for the then telecom minister, A. Raja. The second allegation is that Subramanium used lobbyist Nira Radia’s office to get the membership of a swimming club. Subramanium has denied the allegation. One hopes that the collegium would take a position that will give apex court a judge which according to justice P.N. Bhagwati “should be stern stuff and tough fire, unbending before power, economic or political, and they must uphold the core principle of the rule of law which says: “Be you ever so high, the law is above you.”

he Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), an Al Qaeda splinter group, on July 1 seized a strategic eastern Syrian town along the Iraqi border following days of intense clashes with rival jihadi group. The ISIS captured Bukamal town in Syria’s Deir al-Zour province after an “intense” battle with the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, Xinhua reported citing the London-based watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The ISIS has started advancing towards al-Shahel town, a stronghold of the Nusra Front, in the eastern Syrian countryside of Deir alZour, the observatory said. The Nusra Front and the ISIS have been fighting since early this year. Their battles have claimed the lives of more than 7,000 insurgents and civilians since the beginning of 2014 in northern and eastern Syria, according to the Observatory.

Russia regrets Kiev’s ceasefire decision MOSCOW/KIEV: Moscow “deeply regrets” Kiev’s decision to call off ceasefire in Ukraine’s eastern regions, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on July 1. The decision has undermined “important joint diplomatic actions” of Russia, Germany and France over the Ukrainian crisis, Moscow said following a phone conversation between foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France late on June 30, Xinhua reported. “There is an impression that the changing of Kiev’s position happened in contradiction with the position of the European Union’s leading members,” the
statement said. During the phone talks, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin discussed steps to implement President Petro Poroshenko’s peace plan with his three counterparts and necessary steps to extend the ceasefire. The Ukrainian president announced a week-long ceasefire by the government forces June 21 to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, and later extended it to June 30. However, Poroshenko decided not to extend the ceasefire in the violence-hit regions. The Ukrainian troops resumed military offensive against insurgents in the eastern regions on July 1.

US deploys more troops in Iraq WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said that about 200 troops arrived in Iraq to protect the US embassy in Baghdad amidst fierce fighting in the war-torn country, a media report said on July 1. The new troops, who
arrived on June 29 and June 30, will provide security for the embassy, the Baghdad airport and other facilities in Iraq. The deployment includes “a detachment of helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles,” said a top US official.
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that India is a priority for China’s foreign policy and both the nations should work to develop together, media reported on July 1. Describing India as a strategic partner during the course of a meeting with visiting Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari here on June 30, Xi said both sides should grab the opportunity for joint development, including promoting the construction of an economic corridor through China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and India, the China Daily reported.
Meanwhile, Ansari has come back to India after a five-day trip to China, during which he attended a function commemorating the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Panchsheel agreement between the two countries. Ansari said the world was large enough for the rise of both India and China, which view each other as partners for mutual benefit and not as rivals. India would like to properly handle differences and problems with China, he said. Earlier on June 30, Ansari and Chinese Vice-President Li Yuanchao held extensive talks.

ndia’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj concluded her three-day-visit to Bangladesh on June 27 after offering prayers at the historic Dhakeshwari Mandir here for better ties between the two countries. “I came to Bangladesh with an open mind. Good relations exist between India and Bangladesh and the relationship will get better. I am trying to resolve all the issues coming in the way of our ties,” Sushma Swaraj said while interacting with devotees at the temple. She also met Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia at Dhaka’s Hotel Sonargaon, bdnews24.com reported. During the 40-minute meeting, Zia reportedly “complained” about the state of democracy in Bangladesh. Swaraj told Khaleda that the new Indian government wanted to emphasize on a relationship without favoring any particular political party or a government in Bangladesh. BNP’s standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan and vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury termed the meeting “successful”. “The issue of lack of democracy in the country came up in the meeting. not reflect the people’s will,” Moyeen Khan said. “The external affairs minister is shortly departing from Dhaka after what we feel has been a fruitful and successful visit,” Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said. Sushma Swaraj sent out a strong message that her government would build upon the momentum of the relations between the two countries. She left for New Delhi on a special Air India flight around 1.30 p.m. from Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport after being seen off by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md. Shahidul Haque.
India to extradite Nur Hossain DHAKA: India has agreed to send back Nur Hossain, the prime suspect in a multiple-murder case in Bangladesh, Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali told parliament on July 2. Replying to a query from Jatiya Party member Pir Fazlur Rahman, the minister said: “The matter was discussed during the recent visit of Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. The Indian government has agreed to extradite him.” Hossain and his two accomplices were arrested June 15 from an apartment at Baguiati, close to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. A councillor in Bangladesh’s Narayanganj and prime accused in the murder of seven people, Hosain has been booked under the Arms Act and Foreigners Registration Act for illegal trespass into Indian territory without valid travel documents and for illegal possession of a weapon. All three are currently in police custody. Hossain’s arrest was made in India after the seven murders in Narayanganj that shook the country.
Lankan prez visits violence-hit areas COLOMBO: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited areas hit by communal violence and assured people that perpetrators will be brought to justice, the President’s Office said on July 1. Buddhist-Muslim violence erupted June 15 in the southern tourist hot spots of Aluthgama and Beruwala, Xinhua reported. The violence was sparked by the group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) or Buddhist Task Force holding a rally in the area. Following the rally where inflammatory speeches were made, mobs went berserk and torched dozens of houses and shops in the area.
Curfew had to be imposed for nearly three days before the situation could be brought under control. President Rajapaksa has repeatedly pledged to take legal action against perpetrators of ethnic clashes and in several public speeches called on citizens to excise restraint. “We will bring the people who caused this harm to justice,” he assured residents, requesting them to support repair efforts carried out by the army. Last week the government allocated 200 million rupees ($1.5 million) to repair and reconstruct shops and houses of both Muslims and Buddhists damaged in the clashes.
Over 400 militants killed in Pakistan ISLAMABAD: At least 412 militants and 17 soldiers have been killed so far in the military operation against terrorists hiding in the country’s north-western tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, the Pakistan army said on June 30. According to the statistics released by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a mouthpiece of the Pakistan army, as many as 376 terrorists have been killed in the restive tribal region of North Waziristan, an area believed to be the last safe haven of militants in Pak-
istan, Xinhua reported. Security forces have also killed 36 militants in the tribal region of Khyber Agency, an area adjacent to the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Army launched a comprehensive operation named “Zarb-eAzb” against foreign and local militants, hiding in sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal region a week after the terrorist attack on the country’s busiest airport in the southern port city of Karachi.

elgium recorded their fourth consecutive victory to reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after a thrilling 2-1 extra time win over the United States at the Arena Fonte Nova here on July 1. Kevin De Bruyne scored the crucial opener for Belgium in the 93rd minute after U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard’s heroics had kept the match goalless in regular time. Extra time substitute Romelu Lukaku made the difference for Belgium. The Chelsea forward on loan to Everton last season had an instant impact as he assisted for the opener while scored the second in the 105th minute to double his side’s lead. Kevin de Bruyne ignited a great move from Belgium with a giveand-go with Dries Mertens on the near side. The game was played almost entirely on the U.S. right flank where Jan Vertonghen and Eden Hazard threatened going forward, but Belgium were vulnerable at the back from American counter attacks. After a slow first half, the pace of the game picked up in the second. Belgium slowly took control of the game and created chances after chances. American goalie Howard was the difference between the scoreline remaining goalless and Belgium scoring a couple of goals.

fixing reports in World Cup
RIO DE JANEIRO: FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has expressed concern over match fixing in international football. In an interview with Brazilian television channel Sportv, Valcke said there was no way of knowing if games played during the World Cup had been manipulated, reports Xinhua. “It exists and it’s something that we are not going to eliminate hundred percent,” the governing body’s World Cup chief said.
Chiseling replied to the 27-yearold by urging FIFA to reassess the severity of the penalty, which also includes a nine-match ban from competitive international matches.
“It happens at the highest level and at the lower levels. What we can do is control legal betting. We work with two companies that monitor this around the world. But it’s very difficult to fight against what is done behind the scenes.” Valcke’s comments came after German magazine Spiegel claimed the Group A match between Cameroon and Croatia June 18 was fixed. The magazine alleged that Cameroon agreed with a betting ring before the match to lose 4-0. Days later FIFA revealed the clash between Cameroon and Brazil June 23 was at risk of being rigged. Media reports said alarm bells rang due to Cameroon’s prior elimination from the tournament and reports of conflict within the Indomitable Lions’ team. FIFA official Jerome Valcke

I get paid very well, have no complaints: Kareena
My only fault is I’m a woman: Preity MUMBAI: Bollywood actor-businesswoman Preity Zinta has publicly opened up about her reason to file a police complaint against businessman and her former beau Ness Wadia on her Facebbook page. She took to her official Facebook page — Real Preity Zinta — to make the clarification on July 2 as she said she is “surprised” by some reactions to her complaint that Ness Wadia allegedly molested her. Ness Wadia provided a list of nine people present at the Wankhede Stadium May 30 in connection with the abuse case filed against him by Preity Zinta. The list has names of six women and three men who were present during the Kings XI Punjab versus Chennai Super Kings match when the alleged incident took place.

While actors like Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra feel there is disparity in the wage system compared to actors in Bollywood, Kareena shares a different opinion. “I get paid very well and I have no complaints. If it’s a big budget film, they can afford and what works for another actress might not work for somebody else,” the actor told in a group interview. “I feel each and every actor is different. For example, I can never do The Dirty Picture. I don’t have that courage and boldness but for me it’s a challenge to be a part of Golmaal 3 and still have a great role. When Ayushman got rejected for TV show MUMBAI: It was a surreal moment for VJ-turned-Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana when he was called upon to mentor the contestants in the upcoming season of “India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj”. He says that it was the same show that rejected him many years ago when he came for audition. The 29-year-old, who came into the limelight after winning the second season of “MTV Roadies”, recollects how in 2003 he was rejected for the show just because of his unconventional looks. I was this nerdy looking thin guy not six feet tall conventional hero. But that was ten years back,” he added.

As a loner on a rampage after the love of his life is killed, he brings to the table a certain intensity which unfortunately, in this case, can only go this far and no further. We are looking at a film that is deeply flawed and fatally selfdefeating. Much was expected from director after “Aashiqui 2”. Alas, Suri chooses to wallow in unnecessary and at times prolonged brutality rather than focus on the tender love story between the seething brute and the bubbly babe. Not that there is anything new to offer in the love story. The silent indignant loner and the gregarious chirpy girl next door...haven’t we seen Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri take those two characters to the acme of perfection in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Mili”? ”Ek Villain” is “Mili” over-heaped with a chaos of havoc, mostly uncalled-for and sometimes viciously out of place. The action sometimes borders on the utterly bizarre. Luckily, this incoherent serial killer is played by Riteish who interprets the character with more cogency than it
demands. Suri diminishes the brutality of the serial offender by offsetting it with the love story between the criminally inclined introvert (Siddharth) and the sunshine girl (Shraddha) who insists on telling criminally unfunny jokes. Shraddha’s eyes speak volumes. So unfortunately does her mouth in this film. How I wish our cinema would stop equating volubility with vivacity. More regrettable are the plot’s mood swings. In spite of the tragic overtones the love story never quite acquires the wings that you’d expect a romance between two such goodlooking people. In the second-half when Siddharth and Riteish do a farcical face-off replete with the most atrocious dialogues and scenes that make them look like two school boys fighting over who’s larger. One of the turning points in the story when Siddharth’s character befriends his wife’s killer’s little son in a church, is such a wildly rare shot in the dark, you wonder what the director was thinking! In trying for a merger of mayhem and emotions the film finally falls apart like the shattered pieces of a broken heart. We expect so much and get so little. That’s life.

‘Designing for West gives us creative scope’ NEW DELHI: Indian designers Falguni and Shane Peacock, say that it’s always fun to make clothes for both ‘desi’ and ‘videshi’ stars. But their creative freedom gets restricted while designing for the celebrities in India. “It’s always fun to design for Indian and international celebrities, but at times when it comes to designing for them, there are a few restrictions in terms of the outfit being revealing, the length of the outfit, which limits our ability. “Whereas in the West we don’t have any such restrictions so we can explore more in terms of designs, cuts and styles,” Flaguni told IANS. “Indian cinema and fashion have always gone hand in hand and in each time period, a fashion trend has evolved due to Indian cinema,” said Shane. IS THE GURU GREATER THAN GOD? N BY A STAFF WRITER
EW YORK -- Kabir was a level-headed saint-poet, almost an iconoclast, who cut through much mumbo-jumbo surrounding religion and spirituality. So one listens intently when he proclaims, “Guru Gobind dono khare, kake lagon paye, Balihari guru aapne jin Gobind diyo milaye” (Both God and Guru are standing in front of me, who should I prostate to? I choose the Guru, of course, because I owe everything to one who was instrumental in my meeting God.) Guru Gita (part of Skanda Purana) goes one further, and equates guru with God. “Gurur Brahma gurur Vishnu gurur Devo Maheshwarah, Guru sakshat par Brahman tasmai shri guruvai namnah”. (Guru is the creator Brahma, Guru is the preserver Vishnu, as well as s the destroyer Siva. Guru is verily the Supreme Spirit — I offer my salutations to this Guru.) These days, we often hear of a marketing guru, a media guru, and so on. But here, of course, we are talking about guru as in spiritual teacher. Etymologically, in Sanskrit, the syllable ‘gu’ (गग) means shadows, and the syllable ‘ru’ (गग), one who disperses them. So the guru has the power and the wherewithal to disperse the darkness of ignorance and bring us into the light of knowledge of the True Self. In simple terms, a guru is an enlightened master who helps us to tune in to the voice of God within our hearts and silences the voices of lust, anger, greed, envy, illusion and madness. He helps us to see the Lord
within the hearts of humans and other beings. The guru does not tell us what to do but clears the dust on the mirror of our hearts so the reflection of the Lord can shine through us. Why do we need a guru? If you want to learn mathematics or any academic subject, you go to school and learn from the teachers of those disciplines. If you want to learn music, you go to a music
teacher. Similarly, to purse spirituality, you will progress faster if you learn with a spiritual teacher. The Indian system, wisely enough, has even earmarked a Day of the Guru in the calendar: Guru Poornima, which falls on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August). It falls on 12th July this year as per the English calendar. Guru Poornima is the day to feel grateful for the great knowledge you have received from your Master. Gratitude and humility together blossom a genuine prayer inside you! You may be wondering – can one find a Satguru in America of all places! Well, people living in the New York metropolitan area and those who can travel here are fortunate to be able to celebrate Guru Poornima 2014 in the divine presence of an enlightened master and perfect Satguru, Brahmrishi Sri Guruvanand Ji Swami. He is one of the few living Satgurus who have invoked all chakras of their Kundalini. His devotees, who call him Gurudev, point out that on Guru Poornima his divine power is at its peak. That day he gives his blessing in the form of shaktipat personally to each and every one present. Such a precious blessing given on Guru Poornima goes a long way for those receiving it to bring long lasting peace and happiness in their lives. Hear Diane, a devotee of Gurudev, relates her own shaktipat experience: “After meeting Gurudev, I was touched by him and my meditation the next morning was different. I worked through some old unrest and fears during meditation. He is

a powerful figure for good in the world.” Adds Apra Bhandari of Los Angeles, “Just being in his presence makes me feel like I can get through any obstacle that comes my way. He guides us towards a more balanced and aware lifestyle. His aura has the power to make everything around us happy and positive.” For those who have not yet come in contact with Sri Guruvanand ji, he has made his life’s mission to help and guide us all, irrespective of caste, creed or religious belief, along the path he has treaded. A disciple of revered Yogiraj Devraha Baba, who lived to the age of 250, Sri Guruvanand Swami attained his spiritual powers after 45 years of rigorous sadhana. A renowned scholar of Hinduism, Jainism and Indian philosophy, Guruji also has a deep understanding of Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism. So, he is able to explain and relate the spiritual process to the tradition a devotee belongs to. Interested in cherishing some spiritual bliss? Guru Poornima 2014 with Sri Guruvanand Swami will be celebrated at the magnificent New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, July 12 (3 PM to 8 PM) followed by Gurudev’s personal blessings and Prasad (dinner). The event has been made free, courtesy of World Spiritual Awareness Forum, but registration is required. AN JOSE (CA) -- Three Indian American youths are among the 19 students from across the United States who have emerged through a rigorous exam process that began last January with approximately 4,277 students who participated in the Fnet=ma exam to make it to the 2014 US Physics Team. The three Indian American youths are Rohan Kodialam of High Technology High School in Lincroft, New Jersey; and Rahul Sridhar and Vikram Sundar, both from the Harker School in San Jose, Calif. These students will continue to train for the mentally grueling exams and lab tests they will face at the 45th International Physics

Olympiad to be held from July 13 to 21 in Astana, Kazakhstan, where more than 400 student scholars from 92 nations will test their knowledge in physics, competing with the best in the world. Kodialam continued to learn more physics during his junior year when he discovered what he called the most exciting Physics book: “Feynman’s Lectures on Physics.” “Feynman’s enthusiasm and the simplicity and clarity with which he explains hard concepts has made me enjoy Physics even more,” he said. Sridhar said that his favorite part of any math contest was the time spent afterwards with friends sharing their progress, comparing methods, debating results, and reveling in the
elegance of particular solutions. “Often, they’d take up problems none of them managed to solve and unravel them as a group, filling entire boards with equations and diagrams,” he said. Sundar’s experience with the Physics Olympiad began in his freshman year when he first took the F=ma exam with little knowledge of mechanics. F=ma is the first step in the selection process to be on the United States National Physics Olympiad (USAPhO) team and represent the U.S. at the 44th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). “Since then, I have always been intrigued by the semifinals problems; while simple, these problems are elegant examples of the power of elementary physics,” he said.
ATON ROUGE (L A) -- Louisiana authorities say two men have been a r re s t e d f o r l e a v i n g cylinders that contained poisonous gases at a warehouse in Roanoke. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) says 62-year-old George L. Ryals III, of Newton, was booked last week with felony illegal disposal of harmful substances. Fifty-five-yearold Michael Anaker, of Sulphur, was arrested on the same charge around the same time. DEQ’s Jean Kelly says Ryals is president of Stillwater Consultants, Ryals and Anaker were evicted by the Crop Production Services warehouse in June 2009 for failure to pay rent. She says warehouse representatives found more than 500 gas cylinders that had been abandoned. The State police say the cylinders contained hazardous chemicals, including chlorine, arsenic pentafluoride and hydrogen cyanide

NJ community activist Thomas killed in road accident in New York BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- An Indian American community activist from New Jersey, popular in the Malayalee diaspora for his church activities, Thomas M. Thomas, was tragically killed in an accident in New York, on the night of June 25. Thomas (71) was on Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park when he pulled over to the side of the road and exited his Volvo to go ask a police officer for directions. While his wife sat in the car, he crossed the street and spoke with the officer, but as he was crossing back to his own vehicle, he was struck by an oncoming Mercedes-Benz at 10.30 pm. Emergency crews were summoned to the scene, and Thomas was taken to nearby North Shore University Hospital. However, he suffered fatal head injuries
Thomas M. Thomas and was pronounced dead just after 11 pm. The police identified the man who struck Thomas as a 47-year-old male, who is not facing any criminal charges. The man stayed at the scene following the accident
and fully cooperated with the police who also inspected the Mercedes-Benz but found nothing wrong with it. Joychenputhukulam.com, a local community website for people from Kerala, posted an obituary for Thomas, calling him a “Good Samaritan” who never shied away from helping people in need. At the time of his death, he was returning from dropping off a friend at the airport. Thomas was actively involved with his local Christian and Catholic community groups, based around his home in Bergen County, New Jersey. He was one of the founding fathers of the Kerala Catholic Congress, and was involved with setting up an independent Christian Association in the US, in the model of the Catholic Union of India. Thomas is survived by his wife Gracy, son Tegy, and daughter Tegina.

Youth accused of making online threats to women
Keshav Mukund Bhide

A S H I N G TO N - - A University of Washington student accused of threatening a killing spree online has been charged in federal court with making interstate threats. Keshav Mukund Bhide, 23, is accused of threatening to seriously injure or kill women at the University of Washington and other women. He was arrested last week at his dormitory in the University District. According to court documents, Bhide posted comments on several YouTube videos related to Elliot Rodger, the man who killed six people and then himself near the University of California-Santa Barbara on May 23. Some of the comments were posted only a few days after the shootings at Seattle Pacific University on June 5. In postings under the username “Foss Dark,” Bhide defended Rodger’s actions, and in one comment on June 9 said :“I live in seattle and go to UW, that’s all ill give u. Ill make sure I kill only women, and many more than Elliot accomplished”. The FBI and University of Washington police began investigating Bhide after the June 9 post. During an interview after he was arrested, Bhide told agents he sympathized with Rodger and that he thought it was unfair for creators of the videos to judge Rodger’s actions. He told agents that he, like Rodger, had few friends and difficulty socializing. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Andrew Munoz said Bhide’s student visa would stay in effect as long as he remains enrolled at the University of Washington, but that could change if he was convicted of a serious crime. If he is found guilty of the federal charge of interstate threats, after completing his sentence he could be brought before an immigration judge to determine if he should be deported, Munoz said.

ALIFORNIA-Mohammad Riaz Khan, Mohammad Shahbaz Khan, Harmit Chechi, and Harjit Johal were arrested on June 20 as part of an ongoing investigation into an unemployment and disability benefits fraud scheme. Mohammad Nawaz Khan, Mohammad Adnan Khan, and Iqila Begum Khan, all of Live Oak, California, were also indicted and arrested, according to a June 20 press release by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Chechi and Johal face a maximum
statutory penalty of five years in prison for perjury. According to the recent indictment, while out on bond for his first indictment, Shahbaz Khan allegedly began another scheme with Riaz Khan aka Ray Khan, 53, a release from the Justice Department said. Riaz Khan is alleged to have issued checks to ‘fake’ employees and asked them to cash the checks and return the money to him to make it appear that the ‘employees’ were being paid wages. These ‘employees’ would then claim to be laid off and file for unemployment benefits, disability benefits,
or both. Chechi, 27, and Johal, 47, of Yuba City, California were charged with committing perjury before a federal grand jury in connection with the investigation. Of the people arrested, Nawaz Khan, 56, Iqila Khan, 31, Shahbaz Khan, 56, Gurdev Kaur Johl, 67, and Kewal Singh, 74, had been previously indicted in 2012 for their participation in a similar longrunning scheme. The previous scheme, based in Sutter County, California, involved the accused setting up a series of farm labor contracting
companies, dating as far back as 1989 and selling false paystubs to purchasers. Gurdev Kaur Johl, and Kewal Singh, both of Yuba City, back in 2012, were also named in that indictment. The scheme allegedly defrauded the California Employment Development Department of more than $14 million. The 2014 indictment brings the total to 28 individuals who have been charged in this investigation. Thirteen have pleaded guilty to various charges. If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

MAN FACES 6-YR JAIL FOR SELLING ILLEGAL CIGS BY A STAFF WRITER
B
RO O K LY N ( N Y ) - - A plot, abetted by a Midland Beach man, to rub out two cooperating witnesses in a multibillion-dollar cigarette-trafficking operation, went up in smoke when the would-be hitman turned out to be an undercover cop. Yousseff Odeh will soon pay for his role in the scheme with some time upstate after pleading guilty to conspiracy and enterprise-corruption charges, said prosecutors. Odeh, 52, is a supporter of the blind cleric, Omar Abdel Rahman, who masterminded the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, authorities said. In May of last year, Odeh, and Basel Ramadan, then 42, of Ocean City, Md., were among 16 defendants charged in Brooklyn state Supreme Court with distributing some $55 million worth of illegal cigarettes. The gang peddled 20,000 cartons of untaxed smokes a week to several Arab markets and grocery stores throughout Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, said authorities. At one point last year, Odeh claimed to have sold 15,000 cartons of untaxed cigarettes worth about $780,000 to three customers alone, said the police. Authorities said Ramadan, who’s also known as Abu Salah, masterminded the plot, and Odeh was a distributor and trusted lieutenant. Odeh is also known as Abu Mahmoud. The alleged murder plan kicked into high gear last summer. On August 24, Odeh and Ramadan each provided “descriptive information” to an unidentified third party regarding the intended targets, two witnesses they believed were cooperating with authorities, said court papers.

Ramadan disclosed one target’s name and home address and the other target’s place of business. On September 17, Ramadan spoke on the phone with the undercover detective posing as a killer for hire. Ramadan said he had “one of those problems” and later expressed his appreciation when the officer said he could “take care of it,” court records said. Ramadan’s cases are still pending. Under his agreement, Odeh faces sentences of two to six years in prison on each guilty plea, said a spokesman for state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman whose office is prosecuting the case. Besides the alleged cigarette scheme, Odeh also had a business selling baby

formula. One of his investors in that business in the 1990s was Abdel Rahman, the Blind Sheikh convicted in the plot to bomb a number of New York City landmarks. Odeh also had personal and financial ties to Ahmed Abdel Sattar, the Elm Park resident who served as spokesman for the Blind Sheikh during the 1995 landmarks trial, and who had conveyed the Sheikh’s messages to his followers in Egypt and Afghanistan, the police said. Sattar, who himself worked with Odeh in the baby formula business, was convicted in 2005 of conspiracy to kill and kidnap persons in a foreign country and for soliciting crimes of violence.

Emperor penguins facing
RISK OF EXTINCTION IANS, WASHINGTON
E
Quality of sperm,
not donors’ age, matters Age of sperm donor is of little significance in couples having sperm donation, finds new study IANS, LONDON
I
t is the sperm quality of the donor and not his age that matters in the success of fertility treatment with sperm donation, a study says. The age of the sperm donor was of little significance in couples having sperm donation for fertility treatment, the findings showed. “It is sperm quality rather than male age that matters,” said Meenakshi Choudhary, from Britain’s Newcastle Fertility Centre at Life. “Our results suggest that, up to the age of 45, there is little effect
of male age on the treatment’s outcome,” Choudhary added. The findings reaffirm the observation that a couple’s fertility appears significantly more dependent on the age of the female partner than on that of the male. Their conclusions were derived from an analysis of all Britain treatment cycles with sperm donation registered by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) between 1991 and 2012. From a total of more than 2,30,000 sperm donation cycles, 39,282 were from a first cycle of treatment (with either IVF or
donor insemination) and were included in the analysis (a first cycle would avoid any bias from previous attempts). Results showed a difference according to female age, both in the IVF (in vitro fertilisation) and the donor insemination treatments. Live birth rate from IVF with donated sperm was around 29 percent in the 18-34 age group, but only around 14 percent in the over-37 age group. However, within these same two female age bands, no significant differences were found in live birth rate (LBR) relative to the age of sperm donor.
mperor penguins are in danger of dramatic declines by the end of the century due to climate change, says a study, suggesting the iconic animal “fully deserving of endangered status due to climate change”. By the end of the century at least two-thirds of Emperor penguin colonies will have declined by more than half, the researchers projected. Emperor penguins are heavily dependent on sea ice for their livelihoods, and, therefore, are sensitive to changes in sea ice concentration (SIC). The researchers’ analysis of the global, continent-wide Emperor penguin population incorporates current and projected future SIC declines, and determined that all of the colonies would be in decline — many by more than 50 percent — by the end of the century, due to future climate change.

Sexting linked to risky sexual behavior among kids IANS, NEW YORK
P
arents may wish to openly monitor cell phones of their kids, and check what types of messages they are receiving as researchers have found that kids who receive sexually suggestive text or photo —sexts are likely to have had sex. Young teenagers who reported receiving a sext were six times more likely to also report being sexually active, the findings showed. “These findings call attention to the need to train health educators, pediatricians and parents on how best to communicate with young adoles-
cents about sexting in relation to sexual behavior,” said lead author Eric Rice, an assistant professor at University of Southern California in the US. “The sexting conversation should occur as soon as the child acquires a cell phone,” Rice said. The study anonymously sampled more than 1,300 middle school students in Los Angeles in the US. Respondents ranged in age from 1015, with an average age of 12.3 years. The researchers found that even when controlling for sexting behaviors, young teens who sent more than 100 texts a day were more likely to report being sexually active.
“If sea ice declines at the rates projected by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) climate models, and continues to influence Emperor penguins as it did in the second half of the 20th century in Terre Adelie, at least two-thirds of the colonies are projected to have declined by greater than 50 percent from their current size by 2100,” said Stephanie Jenouvrier, a biologist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the US. “None of the colonies, even the southern-most locations in the Ross Sea, will provide a viable refuge by the end of 21st century,” Jenouvrier added. The new study expands on previous work on Emperor penguin colony in Terre Adelie, in eastern Antarctica, by using the previous population models to project how all of Antarctica’s 45 known colonies will respond to future climate change. The study appeared in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Skirting controversy:
Goa minister triggers outrage Goa PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar wants to ‘ban bikini culture’; evokes widespread protests; Congress sends pink mini-skirt for the minister IANS, PANAJI
G
oa’s Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar has demanded a ban on young girls wearing short skirts to nightclubs, calling it a threat to “Goan culture”. His comment Tuesday triggered outrage in Goa as well as across the country. Dhavalikar, a cabinet minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government, told reporters on June 30 night that women wearing revealing clothes to night clubs and beaches often led to crimes in society. “Young girls wearing short skirts in nightclubs are a threat to the Goan culture. This habit of young girls wearing short dresses everywhere
does not fit the Goan culture. What will happen to it if this continues? We should not allow this. It should be stopped,” he said.
US daily blames ‘sand mafia’ for Beas tragedy IANS, WASHINGTON/SHIMLA
L
ess than a month after 24 students of an engineering college from Hyderabad were swept away in Himachal Pradesh’s Beas river, a US daily on July 2 blamed the “sand mafia” for the tragedy. “Millions of Indians have gazed in horror at videos showing 24 cheerful engineering students wading in a tranquil stretch of the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh last month and then being swept to their deaths as the waters around them surged,” the New York Times said in editorial “Erosion of Trust in India”. The water, it said, was released from a dam upstream, apparently to deposit sand on the riverbed for easy mining. That release, and the drownings it caused, “have been attributed to the ‘sand mafia’, a nexus of corrupt officials and the sand miners they let loot
a basically free natural resource”. “An essential ingredient in cement, sand has seen its value soar along with the fortunes of India’s equally corrupt construction industry,” the editorial added. BJP leader and former two-time chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal blamed Virbhadra Singh-led state government for promoting mining mafia. “I visited the spot next day after the tragedy (June 8). A number of link roads along the river were visible there. My question to the government is that who has constructed those link roads,” Dhumal on July 2 told IANS over phone. Even at the accident site in Thalot in Mandi district, a majority of engineering college students, who were on a holiday trip to Manali, used one of these link roads before they were caught unawares by the surging waters June 8.
Chennai building collapse toll goes up to 16 CHENNAI: The toll in the collapse of an 11-storey building in Chennai has gone up to 16, while 22 people have been injured, said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on June 30. In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa announced an increase in solatium to the families of the dead belonging to Tamil Nadu by `500,000 to `700,000. The under-construction residential building in Moulivakkam area in Porur collapsed on June 28
trapping over 70 people. Citing the magnitude of debris on the site, a fire service official said it would take at least another day to clear it.
The minister also requested women not to drink “because it is not good for their health”. Expectedly, the minister’s comments triggered outrage on July 1, with the Opposition as well as women’s rights groups accusing Dhavalikar of moral policing. The Congress in Goa is planning to present the minister with a mini-skirt in protest. “Let him see for himself. We are sending him a brand new mini-skirt. Let him see for himself that popular party clothes have very little to do with disrespect to one’s culture,” Congress spokesperson Durgadas Kamat said. Several women’s rights activists in Delhi have come out strongly against Dhavalikar’s statement. Kavita Krishnan of the All India
Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) said such politicians should improve their culture first before telling others how to behave. Dhavalikar’s comment comes on the heels of a similar statement by Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik, who wants to start a unit in Goa ostensibly to stop women from wearing short skirts, to end the “culture of drugs, sex and nudity”, and to preserve “Indian culture”. Dhavalikar, a member of a regional party called the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, also said he agreed with the arguments made by Muthalik, whose group came into the limelight after its members attacked young men and women for drinking alcohol in a Mangalore pub.

Kerala nurses stuck in a basement in Iraq THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 46 Kerala nurses stranded in Iraq’s Tikrit town are spending their time in a basement of a building within the hospital campus where they worked, according to a source. One can easily make out from sounds in the background and around them that they live in a basement in constant fear. They do not know whether the rebels or the government controls their city, a person who did not wish to be identified and in touch with the nurses told IANS. “The nurses said they were offered rice and pulses on Monday. (June 30). They cooked their food thereafter. They said they also got water,” said the person. The nurses who used to speak to a few media personnel from here, now do not attend their calls. The nurses have some idea about who controls Tikrit, the hometown of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, as there were reports about bombings in the place. On Sunday evening, one bomb landed just about 150 metres away from where they were staying earlier, before moving into the basement of another building on June 30.
Death toll in GAIL pipeline blast touches 19 IANS, HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI
F
ifteen villagers were burnt to death and 30 injured on June 27 as a huge fire and deafening explosions caused by a suspected leak engulfed a Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) gas pipeline in Andhra Pradesh. Four seriously injured peosons succumed to injuries later taking the death toll in the tragedy to 19. The central government ordered a probe and announced ex-gratia payment of `200,000 each to the next of kin of those killed. As flames several meters high leapt from the pipeline passing
through Nagaram village in East Godavari district, several of the villagers jolted out of sleep by the blasts failed to escape the blaze. The dead include three women and three children. Officials said the fatalities could rise as the con-
dition of 15 of the injured was said to be critical. The fire, caused by suspected leakage from the 18-inch pipeline of GAIL India Ltd, devastated the village near the Tatipaka refinery of the Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). “The fire caused massive losses. Coconut trees and other crops in over 10 acres were reduced to ashes,” said Finance Minister Y. Ramakrishnudu. President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and grief on the tragedy. President said he was “extremely saddened” to learn about the accident.
BITS Pilani-Hyderabad develops antibiotic finder IANS, HYDERABAD
B
ITS Pilani-Hyderabad has developed a new low-cost, ultra-rapid portable device to test antibiotic sensitivity of human urinary pathogens which can help curb antibiotic resistance to a large extent. The institute on July 1 announced that it is transferring the technology to an incubate company Xcellence in Bio Innovation and Technologies Pvt Ltd (xBITS) for commercial scale production. An agreement has been signed by V.S Rao, director, BITS Pilani with the representative from of xBITS in the presence of Suman
Kapur who is the inventor of this technology, said a statement from BITS Pilani. Rao said with this initiative of transferring the technology, BITS opened a new chapter in “knowledge economy” and enabled the
spirit of entrepreneurship among BITS students and faculty. This technology is expected to obliterate the empirical use of antibiotics and thus help in fighting the growing microbial resistance to antibiotics.

New microbes linked to severe diarrhea
Working on mice, investigators find a consistent pattern of gene expression associated with tumor spreading IANS, WASHINGTON
R
esearchers, led by Indian origin scientist Ravindra Uppaluri, from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have found a way to predict the aggressiveness of oral tumors in people. Working on mice, the investigators found a consistent pattern of gene expression associated with tumor spreading in mice. Analyzing genetic data from human oral cancer samples, they also found this gene signature in people with aggressive metastatic tumors. “We didn’t automatically assume this mouse model would be relevant to human oral cancer, but it turns out to be highly reflective of the disease in people,” said Uppaluri. Rather than use genetic methods to induce tumors in the mice, the research team repeatedly applied a known carcinogen, in
much the same way humans develop cancer of the mouth. “Patients often have a history of tobacco and alcohol use, which drive the development of these tumors,” Uppaluri added. Further analysis identified a common signature in the expression of about 120 genes that was associated with the more aggressive tumors, whether in mice or people. Subsequently, using oral cancer samples from patients treated at Washington University, they developed a proof of concept test from their signature that identified the aggressive tumors with about 93 percent accuracy. “These kinds of tests are available for other types of cancer, most notably breast cancer,” he said. “They are newly born genetic tests that can alter the clinical management of patients, altering cures especially for them. It’s our goal to develop something like that for head and neck cancer,” he said.
NEW YORK: In a finding that may prevent thousands of deaths, researchers have identified new micro organisms that may trigger diarrhea disease and others that may protect against it. “We were able to identify interactions between microbiota that were not previously observed, and we think that some of those interactions may actually help prevent the onset of severe diarrhea,” said lead researcher O. Colin Stine, professor of epidemiology at University of Maryland School of Medicine in the U.S. A better understanding of these interactions may lead to possible dietary interventions. Moderate to severe diarrhea (MSD) is a major cause of childhood mortality in developing countries and ranks as one of the top four causes of deaths among young children in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The researchers used a technique called high-throughput 16S rRNA
genomic sequencing to examine both “good” and “bad” microbiota in samples taken from 992 children in Bangladesh, Gambia, Kenya and Mali under the age of five who were suffering from MSD. The researchers identified statistically significant disease associations with several organisms already implicated in diarrhea disease, such as members of the Escherichia/Shigella genus and
Campylobacter jejuni. They also found that organisms not widely believed to cause the disease, including Streptococcus and Granulicatella, correlated with the condition in their study. In addition, the study revealed that the Puertoreal genus and Lactobacillus ruminis may play a protective role against diarrhea.
Now, 3D printed sleek wrist splints IANS, NEW YORK
A
rthritis patients do not use the wrist splints that are in current use as often as they should as they find them "ugly, bulky, and (ones that) can make a patient's arm sweat". This may change soon as a lecturer at Britainbased based Loughborough University has developed a computer software concept that can help print splints that are not only more comfortable and attractive but potentially cheaper than those in current use. The splints, which provide joint protection and rest and promote pain relief, could be a major boost for sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis, said Abby Paterson,
from Loughborough University. The splints are made by scanning a patient's arm in the appropriate position. A 3D model splint is then designed based on the scan to generate a computer model. The 3D printer can then produce as many splints as are needed at the touch of a button. They can be of any color, feature multiple materials, and have a lattice design to aid ventilation and any type of fastening the patient requires. The software may enable even clinicians with no experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) to design and make custom-made 3D printed wrist splints for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.
Improper sleep may affect your brain LONDON: Sleep problems are associated with worse memory and executive functions in older people, says a study. In adults aged between 50 and 64 years of age, short sleep (less than 6 hours) and long sleep (more than 8 hours) were associated with lower brain function scores. Inversely, in older adults (65-89 years), lower brain function scores were only observed in long sleepers. “6-8 hours of sleep per night is particularly important for optimum brain function in younger adults,” said Michelle Miller from the University in Britain. — IANS

This app can make obese people agile IANS, NEW YORK

f you are used to a sedentary lifestyle, this app can help you become a little active. This smartphone-based app can produce short-term reductions in sedentary behavior that may be effective in improving health. More sedentary time, regardless of physical activity levels, is associated with greater risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and mortality. “Almost everyone knows that
percent of the jewellery is regularly worn. The remaining two-thirds are left neglected in a jewellery box because just 9 percent of women sell or remodel unwanted pieces. “Many women don’t realize their jewellery box is such a valuable treasure trove. These findings prove the continual popularity of jewellery. No matter her age, women love the feeling new jewellery gives them,” said Dominguez. “They are consistently adding to their collections through their 30s and 40s. Women see fine jewellery as an investment they can enjoy for life. “Many affluent 50-year-olds are sitting on jewellery collections worth more than 40,000 pounds — far more than the average annual wage,” he added.
physical activity is important. But it’s not widely recognized that someone who runs five miles in the evening but spends the rest of the day sitting at a desk can be putting their health at risk,” said coresearcher Dale Bond from The Miriam Hospital, Rhode Island, in the U.S. “That smartphone you use so often throughout the day could now actually help to improve your health,” he added. Bond and Graham Thomas from the same institute worked
with their colleagues to develop a smartphone-based intervention to reduce the amount of time obese individuals sit or recline while awake. The smartphone app, “BMobile,” was tested in a study of primarily middle-aged women who were obese, although the intervention can be applied to those who are not obese. The app automatically monitored the time participants spent being sedentary, and after an extended period with no activity, prompted participants via a tone paired with motivational messages to get up and walk around for a few minutes.
