Modi-Obama summit in September Narendra Modi expresses his keenness to give a push to the flagging Indo-US ties and has accepted President Obama’s invite to visit Washington IANS, NEW DELHI

N

early a decade after it denied him a visa and blacklisted him, the US is practically preparing to roll out the red carpet for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is set to hold a summit meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington in September-end this year. According to official sources, Modi has expressed his keenness to give a push to the flagging Indo-U.S. ties and has accepted Obama’s invite to visit Washington. The U.S. denied Modi a visa in 2005 over the Gujarat riots, in which over a 1,000 people, mostly Muslims were killed. Modi was Gujarat chief minister when the riots occurred and the US State Department invoked a little-known US law passed in 1998 that makes foreign officials responsible for “severe violations of religious freedom” ineligible for visas. After the swearing-in of Modi, who led the BJP to a spectacular victory in the general election, Obama in a message vowed to work closely together with the new Indian prime minister “for years to come”. Obama was quick to acknowledge Modi’s “resounding” victory

in the election and extended an invitation to him to visit Washington — effectively ending the visa ban on him. Obama is believed to be keen to patch up the damage to Indo-US ties as fast as possible. His meeting with Modi will be the second within the span of a year with an Indian prime minister. He had met Manmohan Singh in September last year during the former prime minister’s visit to Washington enroute to the UN General Assembly. Modi, whose move to reach out to South Asian neighbors during his swearing-in has been lauded, gave an indication of his foreign policy thoughts in interviews before coming to power. He had said that individual incidents should not be allowed to cloud bilateral relations — an apparent reference to the visa ban on him by the U.S. Bilateral ties, which had seen a cooling off during the latter years of UPA-II, suffered a setback with the handcuffing and strip search of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade last year for alleged visa fraud and

WASHINGTON: The U.S. is looking forward to the first summit meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reset India-U.S. ties that had gone adrift in the last days of the previous government. The U.S. was much behind its European partners in reaching out to Modi with its former U.S. ambassador to New Delhi, Nancy Powell, making the first high-level contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate in only February this year. But Modi led BJP’s “resounding” victory quickly ended Washington’s hesitation with Obama making a call to congratulate “candidate Modi” and invite him to the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was quick to “echo” the invitation. “As President Obama and Secretary Kerry both said, we look forward to welcoming the prime minister to Washington,” State department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters on June 5 when asked to confirm if Modi was coming in September. But “nothing to announce on timing at this point,” she said Nor did Harf “have any more details” of what would be on the agenda of the Modi-Obama summit. “We said we look forward to welcoming him,” she simply repeated. Analysts have also appreciated Modi’s quick response to Obama invite.

underpaying her nanny. The U.S. is keen to get started with implementation of the Indo-U.S. civil nuclear deal, which is stuck over India’s civil nuclear liability laws. The US is also keen to increase its defense ties with India, a major market, and also keen to push trade with India.

US excited to partner with PM Modi NEW DELHI: US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal on June 9 said America was excited to partner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he represents the “hopes and aspirations” of Indians. “The United States is very excited about the opportunity ahead and the road ahead in partnership with the new government... because we see the resounding mandate with which Prime Minister Modi has come in, as the hopes and the aspirations of the Indian people.” “The United States wants to partner with India in meeting those hopes and aspirations,” Biswal said. She said US President Barack Obama was looking forward to meeting Modi. “Conversations are being worked out between our two governments. The (US) president in his first conversation with the prime minister (Modi) invited him and welcomed him to Washington. And we look forward to that at a mutually convenient date,” Biswal said. Earlier, Biswal who met Foreign

Secretary Sujatha Singh and other senior officials, including joint secretaries Vikram Doraiswami and Ajay Bisaria, Information and Broadcasting and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar conveyed that the “US is extremely keen to engage with the new government of India, and will be guided by the pace and direction the new government takes…All doors are open to engage, and whatever areas that India is willing to move on they are okay with,” the source added.

The Obama-Modi meeting is likely to take place during the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Biswal was one of the Obama administration’s first officials to go onrecord as saying that the U.S. is looking forward to working with Modi. With the White House reinforcing that position, the two countries hope to improve ties and move ahead with a relationship that promises to yield significant fruit for both sides.

he signals from both India and the US are loud and clear — engagement in every sector, and fast. Pushing back the slackness that had crept into the important strategic relationship over the last few years, the new Indian government signaled its keenness to “move forward as early as possible” to boost ties with the U.S. The US too gave clear signals before India’s general elections that it is “very keen to move forward and get the relationship back on track”, said sources here on June 11. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj “made it clear” that they want to move forward on the relationship “as early as possible”. The boost to bilateral ties also holds promise for the India-U.S. Defense Dialogue, that had been stalled for the past two years, to be held again. The U.S., which will host the dialogue, too has a new team in defense in place. India would be along with the U.S. in the Trilater-

al with Japan on June 23-24 in New Delhi. Besides, Sushma Swaraj would be meeting her counterpart U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in the U.S. for the bilateral Strategic Dialogue. “The next three months would see pretty high pace of momentum in Indo-US ties,” well informed sources said.

“Next three months to see pretty high pace of momentum in Indo-US ties.” The Modi government has indicated that it wants to push trade and economic partnership with the U.S. and “get the energy back into the relationship”. “Enough ink and blood has been spilt on the issue. Both sides are finding ways to resolve the issues it threw up, and also that such incidents do not recur, said one of the sources, not wishing to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issues,” sources said.

We have dreams to fulfil: Modi

In his reply in Lok Sabha to the debate on President’s address, PM Modi says his govt would live up to people’s expectations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his government’s resolve for a ‘Clean India’.

IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi in his maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on June 11 said that his government would “leave no stone unturned to fulfil” the promises outlined by President Pranab Mukherjee in his address. In his reply in the Lok Sabha to the debate on motion of thanks on the president’s address, Modi said there were many who voiced doubts if the high promises spelt out in the president’s address could be fulfilled. Giving the example of his time as Gujarat chief minister when he lived up to the promise of providing 24-

hour electricity across the state, Modi said: “It is understood that people will have doubts... But I assure this house that the path mentioned by the President, we will leave no stone unturned to fulfil them.” “For us, the president’s

Delhi court on June 9 awarded life imprisonment to 17 of the 18 policemen convicted of killing a 22-year-old MBA student in a fake shootout in Dehradun in 2009. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge J.P.S. Malik awarded life terms to 17 policemen involved in the staged gun battle and said the case did not fall in the rarest of rare category and was based on circumstantial evidence. CBI had asked for death penalty for the convicted policemen. As the judge announced the order, the victim’s father, Ravinder Pal Singh, broke down. “The convicts must be awarded death penalty for their offenses,” he told reporters. The wives of a few policemen also broke down inside the courtroom and said that court must show some leniency towards them. “Most of the policemen have young children. Who will take care of them,” one of the policemen’s wife said. The 18 policemen were charge sheeted by the CBI in connection with the Ranbir Singh case that rocked the hill state in July 2009. The policemen were arrested after

evidence showed that Ranbir, a resident of Ghaziabad, was gunned down in cold blood by the Uttarakhand Police. Following the staged shootout, the police claimed to have caught Ranbir and his companions on Mohini Road where they were allegedly “trying to commit some

address is part of tradition... The words are like a divine address and to fulfil them it will be our endeavour, and it will also inspire us to work.” While beginning his speech, Modi said it was the first time he has

come to the Lok Sabha and it was his maiden address. He asked the members to excuse him for any lapses he might make due to inexperience. The Prime Minister said that during election time they were all candidates, but

after being elected, the MPs are now “the messengers of the people’s hopes” and have to “safeguard the people’s hopes”. He reiterated his government’s resolve for a “Clean India”, and said the country should accomplish it by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. “Mahatma Gandhi laid great emphasis on cleanliness. His ashrams too focused on the same. Let us pledge we will give a ‘Clean India’ as a gift to our father of the nation on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019,” Modi said. The Prime Minister said providing houses for all by 2022 should be a “movement” and everyone should pitch in for this. “We will find the way, we need to have the dream. There will be difficulties, but we will overcome them,” he said while speaking for the first time on the floor of the Lok Sabha. President Pranab Mukherjee had said on June 9 that by the time the nation completes 75 years of its independence in 2022, every family in India will have a pucca house.

he World Bank projected India’s growth at 5.5 percent in fiscal 2014-15, accelerating to 6.3 percent in 201516 and 6.6 percent in 2016-17 as it urged developing countries to double down on domestic reforms. Subdued manufacturing activity and a sharp slowing of investment growth in India led to GDP growth in South Asia as a whole slowing to an estimated 4.7 percent in market price terms in calendar year 2013, the Bank said in a new report on June 11.

The growth in South Asia was 2.6 percentage points below average growth in 2003-12, the World Bank noted in its twice-yearly Global Economic Prospects report

that also lowered projections for global economic outlook. Firming global growth and a modest pickup in industrial activity should help lift South Asia’s growth to 5.3 percent in 2014, rising to 5.9 percent in 2015 and 6.3 percent in 2016, it said Most of the acceleration is localized in India, supported by a gradual pickup of domestic investment and rising global demand. The World Bank, however, cautioned that forecasts assume that reforms are undertaken to ease supply-side constraints and to improve labour productivity.

Modi is ‘new fashion icon’ From a persona non grata to a fashion icon that’s how a stunning poll victory has transformed Modi in the US media ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

s if on cue, three major US publications — Time, New York Times and the Washington Post — have all written about his trademark ‘Modi Kurta’ as they try to “decode India’s new leader” ahead of his September summit with President Barack Obama. “India’s New Prime Minister Is the Country’s Latest Fashion Icon,” says Time suggesting “With his shortened tunic, or ‘Modi Kurta,’ Narendra Modi is becoming as celebrated for his style sense as he is notorious for his controversial political past.” Paired “with Bvlgari shades and a Movado watch (he’s got penchants for them both),” Modi’s “ensemble is about as mixed as his record as a political leader, really,” it said. “While his leadership of the state of Gujarat ushered in some of

the most impressive economic growth the country has ever seen, questions remain over his role in a string of riots in the state in 2002 that left more than 1,000 people dead,” Time said. But then it hastened to note parenthetically “He has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing. The New York Times sees in “Narendra Modi: A Leader Who Is What He Wears” saying “Even by the standards of a world...the image-craft of India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi - and its fashion fallout — has been something of a case study.” “Indeed, even by the standards of India itself, where leaders have perhaps understood the use of clothing as a ommunication device better and longer than any of their international peers ...Mr. Modi stands out. Literally and strategically,” says Time. “Objectively speaking, the Modi Kurta itself does not exactly represent an extraordinary aesthetic advance; rather it symbolizes a set of values. And therein lies its allure,” it adds. Probing “what Narendra Modi’s fashion says about his politics,” the Washington Post says: “Move aside, Michelle Obama. The world has a new fashion icon. And no, it’s not Vladimir Putin, despite his fitness regimen — it’s India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi.”

US court dismisses case against Sonia IANS, NEW DELHI

A

U.S. federal court in Brooklyn has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Sikh rights organization accusing Congress party president Sonia Gandhi of shielding party leaders allegedly involved in violence against Sikhs in November 1984 in Delhi. US district judge Brian M. Cogan on June 10 granted Gandhi's motion to dismiss the case filed by New York based Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) for lack of subject matter jurisdiction and failure to state a claim. But he denied Sonia Gandhi's motion for "anti suit injunction" seeking to prevent SFJ from filing any further law suits. "Plaintiffs' claims under the ATS (Alien Tort Statute) must be

Sonia Gandhi

dismissed for lack of subject matter jurisdiction because they are plainly barred under the Supreme Court's decision in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Co," the judge ruled. The Alien Tort Statute (ATS) is a US federal law first adopted in 1789 that gives the federal courts

jurisdiction to hear lawsuits filed by non-US citizens for torts committed in violation of international law. Since the court has dismissed Sonia Gandhi's plea to bar SFJ from filing further law suits, SFJ will continue to hold Congress leaders accountable before US Courts, SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh said. Earlier, Gandhi had refused to provide copy of her passport to the US Court and conceded to the court's personal jurisdiction resulting in accomplishment of proper service of summons in the case. The class action suit against Sonia Gandhi was filed by SFJ and victims of 1984 under Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).

US students decry assaults on women NEW DELHI: In a show of solidarity with victims of sexual assaults in India, students of Indian origin graduating from Ivy League universities in the US wore a red tape on their graduation caps during convocation ceremonies last week. Later, several students from Columbia University, Harvard University and Brown University participated in a peaceful protest against the rise in sexual violence in India, especially in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. “Respect for a women’s dignity is

respect for humanity. And that respect starts at home, spreads through communities, extends across university campuses to nations around the world. An assault on one woman is an attack on the entire human race,” Arnab De who completed his PhD from the Columbia University Medical Center and also served as the student representative of the Public Safety Committee at Columbia, told IANS over phone from Washington. “There is nothing anyone can do to bring the bravest Nirbhaya (Dec 16, 2012, New Delhi rape victim) back. But if I can invoke her memory to educate people, I would be very proud. In this regard, I am glad that the Nirbhaya trust was recently launched to help victims,” De told IANS.

Badaun Rape: Indifference of politicians shameful Even Sydney-educated young Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has not been able to exonerate his party of a hooliganist image AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

U

ttar Pradesh is known for having sent several prime ministers — Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and now Narendra Modi — to Parliament. It is also the crucible of the composite north Indian Hindu-Muslim culture, famous for courtly etiquette which percolated down to the lower levels as well. But there is another side of Uttar Pradesh which is less salubrious. It isn’t only the traditional casteism of the Hindi belt with its inbuilt prejudice and antagonism. A part of this sectarian custom is a patriarchal mindset typical of communities which haven’t yet come to terms with the modern age with its concept of the rights of women. In recent years, a community which has come to symbolize the state’s backwardness is the one

which currently rules the state, viz. the Yadavs, described in Wikipedia as a “non-elite, pastoral” group. Being the most prominent of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), which are known for their social and educational backwardness, the Yadavs have another dubious claim to fame — that of rampant hooliganism. One of the most shocking examples of this violent streak, compounded by misogyny, was that in 1995 when the Circuit House where the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati was staying

The Badaun incident where two minors were allegedly raped and killed later has evoked widespread condemnation.

was attacked by Samajwadi Party (SP) goons with such vehemence that she feared for her life. But Akhilesh Yadav hasn’t been successful in improving the image. Instead, the continuing incidents of rape in Uttar Pradesh have begun to attract worldwide attention, dissuading potential tourists from visiting India. The incident which has caused widespread outrage and revulsion is the rape of two cousins by a

group of men who later killed them and hanged them from a tree. The fact that the two teenagers were dalits provided further confirmation of the centuriesold animosity between the backward castes and the “untouchables”. But it isn’t only this and a number of other incidents, including a rape in Rahul Gandhi’s constituency of Amethi, which have shocked the rest of the country. No less

appalling has been the disgracefully casual attitude of the SP leaders. The most reprehensible was the attempt a few weeks ago of the septuagenarian former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to virtually exonerate rapists by saying that young men sometimes commit mistakes but they should not be given capital punishment for their offenses. That this person once aspired to be prime minister can make one shudder.

Managing bureaucracy, the Narendra Modi way Prime Minister Narendra Modi has driven home the point that the government’s work culture is archaic and we need to remove the layers in decision-making AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

W

e are seeing the seeding of a remarkable shift and modification of some archaic structures and mechanisms in the country. These were clearly archaic, reflective of the Raj and exploitative to the extent that they enslaved the country’s population. The masters of this were none other than the bureaucracy, which had become the epitome of morally corrupt across the world.

What we are seeing is a re-look at the governance structures and rightfully so. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has driven home the point quite clearly. The core belief on which the prime minister is acting is that the central government’s work culture is archaic and we need to remove the layers that have been created

in decision-making. The layers were a way of the bureaucracy to not function in a transparent manner and create procedures to cover its tracks. For me, the bureaucracy has been a system that constricted the minds of the people, had a free run, was clearly arrogant, did not want to learn, use its powers to

settle scores, morally corrupt and reflected a pervert thought that would give them control over the masses. They were a class of people who had a free run, wrecking the lives of the people. The less said about the great bureaucracy the better it is as it ended up becoming the masters of non-performance who had colluded to form a cartel of the unfriendly. I couldn’t have agreed more with Mohan Guruswamy, who was recently quoted as saying: “I hope he cracks down on the receiving of gifts at Diwali and other festivals. They all have Mont Blanc pens, suit fabric, cases of Glenfiddich whisky and golf clubs. We have a bureaucracy which is undisciplined, corrupt and venal to its core. It’s about time it was shaken up.” What matters today is that the country is seeing a point in time in history wherein the sowing of the seeds for dismantling this gargantuan structure has probably started. People across the world have stood up and taken notice of this change.

The prime minister has set a process in motion that is clearly about managing the brute power and unprincipled behavior of the neighborhood unfriendly man the bureaucrat. Some of the significant steps taken are: * Make rules people friendly * Gag on the bureaucracy *Reduce procedural red tape *Changing the way senior bureaucrats are selected To begin with I could strongly suggest that we need to get rid of jokers in the system to build trust in bureaucracy. The trust in bureaucracy is important as they are the people who reflect the will of the government and they are eventual custodians of the governance mechanism. What matters today is an additional step to get rid of such people (clear weeding out) from service and do away with the constitutional privileges they enjoy. This could be the most important step in building up confidence in the bureaucracy, restoring faith in its functioning and building a people-oriented system.

eader of Pakistan’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party Altaf Hussain was arrested in London on June 3 on charges of money laundering. The London Metropolitan Police said that a 60-year-old man has been arrested from a northwest London property on charges of money-laundering, but they declined to disclose the exact identity for “legal reasons”, Dawn online reported on June 3. Police said that a search operation was underway at the property in north-west London. Speaking to DawnNews, London-based journalist Farooq Shah said Hussain has been arrested and the police were searching his house. DawnNews quoted the Scotland Yard as saying that the investigation would continue for 24 hours. Altaf Hussain is the founder and chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), its stronghold being Karachi port city in southern

In the early 1990s, the MQM chief went into exile as the Pakistani government at the time conducted an operation in Karachi. ISLAMABAD: The port city of Karachi continued with its shutdown on June 4 in the wake of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s arrest for interrogation in London on June 3. Roads wore a deserted look, public transport was scant, petrol vends and shops were closed and a large number of MQM workers participated in sit-in protest, Dawn online reported. Protestors vowed to continue with the protest unless they heard Hussain’s voice. MQM workers in other cities of Pakistan also staged protests. A number of universities including Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) postponed the examinations scheduled for June 4.

For one US soldier, 5 Talibans freed WASHINGTON/KABUL: A US soldier seized by the Taliban nearly five years ago in Afghanistan has been released after five Taliban leaders held in Guantanamo Bay were let off, US and Taliban officials said. The Taliban prisoners were released from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and handed over to Qatar, which mediated the transfer. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, 28, was handed over to US forces in good health, BBC quoted American officials as saying. He was the only US soldier held by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Officials said the Taliban handed him over Saturday evening. The Taliban, in a statement posted on its official web site, Sunday con-

Sri Lanka to release 29 Indian fishermen

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf chairman Imran Khan on June 2 said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was treated like a schoolboy when he visited India to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. By not meeting Hurriyat leaders in New Delhi, the PM had struck a bargain on Kashmir, Dawn online quoted Khan as saying. If Sharif could meet Indian leaders in Delhi, then why could he not hold a meeting with those representing the Hurriyat Conference, he asked.

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of 29 Indian fishermen arrested last week for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, media reported on June 3. The Indian fishermen were the first batch to be arrested since Narendra Modi took office as Indian prime minister last week. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy off Thalaimannar in the north of the country Saturday and handed over to the fisheries department.

he much-awaited monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 6, the Met office said. An official release said rainfall exceeding 7 cm will occur at a few places in Kerala and Lakshadweep till the morning of June 9. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials also issued a warning to fishermen, stating that strong winds with speed up to 45 to 55 kmph are likely along the Kerala coast and Lakshadweep. The monsoon arrived a day later than expected. Once the southwest monsoon

sets in over Kerala, it advances northwards and covers the entire country by July 15. The IMD stated they declared the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala based on data recorded at the 14 weather stations in Lakshadweep, Kerala and Mangalore. They begin to monitor the rainfall from May 10 and if 60 percent of the stations or more record 2.5 mm of rain for two continuous days, then it satisfies the criterion that monsoon has arrived. Another yardstick is the strength of the wind. Cloud movements are also a key indicator for the weathermen.

Soccer fever: Blame it on Brazil! Spain face Holland in opening game, a repeat of 2010 final of FIFA World Cup; may face England in quarters IANS, RIO DE JANEIRO

H

olders champions Spain and hosts Brazil start as favorites for the 2014 FIFA World Cup crown but South American giants Argentina and new kids on the block Belgium can spring a few surprises. An ageing squad and hosts Brazil are Spain’s biggest troublesome areas and overcoming these two factors will decide if the Spaniards can become the third country after Italy and Brazil to retain their World Cup crown. Spain, however, have been off the boil for some time. They were completely outclassed by hosts Brazil in the final of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and lost to minnows like South Africa in international friendlies. Their narrow, lackluster victories over sides like Belarus and Equatorial Guinea showed they were not

Van Persie fit for World Cup MADRID: Robin van Persie had a disappointing season with Manchester United, suffering from several injuries, but is ready to conquer Spain in the first match of the Netherlands at the World Cup June 13 in Salvador, he said on June 8. “I made progress in recent weeks,” he said. “Although I have some minor groin problems, I would not call it an injury. I can’t remember I played a match without minor niggles.”

David Villa to retire after World Cup WASHINGTON: David Villa, former Valencia, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid player, announced on June 9 that he will retire from international football after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In an exclusive interview to EFE, Villa said that he wished he could play for the Spanish national team until he is 50, yet one needed to be realistic.

Villa, 32, was selected by national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, in the final squad list which will play in Brazil 2014. “I spoke with del Bosque and he understands my decision,” added Villa who is the all-time top scorer for Spain with 58 goals. The Spaniard said that he thought a lot about his decision to retire internationally, which seems logical as he is growing older, yet he did not wish to announce it before start of the Brazil World Cup with La Furia Roja. About Diego Costa, who is born in Brazil but opted to play for Spain in the World Cup, Villa praised him as a distinctive player with a lot of potential, and he will serve the national team well. Villa spoke about his stint with Atletico Madrid, praising it as a great experience which ended with winning La Liga title for the first time for Los Rojiblancos in 16 years. Villa did not mind ending his professional career with Sporting Gijon where he started as a youngster. The Spaniard recently signed with Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City FC.

Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has played down Spain’s chances of winning a fourth successive major tournament.

Koke confident about Spain NEW DELHI: Atletico Madrid’s 22-yearold midfielder Jesus Resurreccion ‘Koke’ admits that when as a boy he watched the World Cup on TV, he thought it would be “impossible” to play in the tournament, but now he could play a major role in Spain’s defense of their World title. Koke showed during Spain’s 2-0 win over El Salvador in their final warm up game ahead of kicking off their title defense against Holland.

team with three consecutive wins of either the continental championship or the World Cup. With the likes of Neymar, Oscar and Willian in the side, few would bet against Brazil topping Group A and going a long way into the tournament. Playing at home will also play a major role with six countries lifting the title when they have hosted the tournament. Brazil also comes into football’s showpiece event with some momentum behind them after winning the FIFA Confederations Cup. They outclassed defending World and Euro champions Spain 3-0 in the final. win five consecutive Roland Garros crowns. The 28year-old also drew level with American legend Pete Sampras at No.2 in the Grand Slam titleleaders’ list with 14 crowns, three behind Swiss star Roger Federer with 17. With the win, Nadal extended his win-loss record to 23-19 against Djokovic.

team increasingly looking like tournament favorites Messi scored in Argentina’s final warm-up game and the team seemed to be gelling well. With the World Cup happening in their backyard, the Argentine players will be licking their lips having to play in familiar conditions. Four years ago in South Africa, Diego Maradona was at the helm of the team and his boisterous and attention grabbing attitude only had an adverse effect on the team. With few talking about Argentina as tournament favorites this is when the white and blue stripes will be at their most dangerous. Belgium qualified for the World Cup in an emphatic fashion by recording a national record of seven successive wins during an unbeaten campaign.

Australia thrash India 4-0 in hockey THE HAGUE: India’s group campaign in the FIH Hockey World Cup came to an end with a 0-4 thrashing by defending champions Australia at the Kyocera Stadium here on June 9. Chris Ciriello (16th and 22nd) struck a brace while Kieran Govers (3rd) and Jeremy Hayward (20th) struck a goal apiece. It was in the second half that India fought back with confidence and challenged the Australians but without any success.

‘Time to come out of box’

Displaying their ‘sensuous’ side is part of actors’ job, feels newcomer Surveen Chawla IANS, MUMBAI

A

s the lead actress in the film Hate Story 2 actress Surveen has done a lot of bold scenes with her co-star Jay Bhanushali. She describes them as a portrayal of “sensuality and sexuality”, not skin show. Before Hate Story 2, Surveen was seen on the small screen and Punjabi films. “If you ask me, I am the most comfortable in my skin, today. I am extremely happy for who I am, what I am and that to me is sensuality and sexuality, not showing off skin,” Surveen said here at the promo launch of the film. “That (showing skin) is only a way to showcase glamour and nothing more than that. So I don’t give it a lot of importance,” she added. Hate Story 2, a sequel to the 2012 film Hate Story, which starred Paoli Dam in the lead, also stars Sushant ‘That is only a Singh. It has been way to showcase directed by Vishal glamor and Pandya and produced by Vikram Bhatt. nothing more Surveen wants the than that. So I Indian audience to stop don’t give it a lot smirking at bold scenes of importance’ in Hindi films now. “Time has come (when) we stop being hypocrite about it and show love the way it is supposed to be shown. I think times and cinema have changed,” Surveen said. “We acclaim films from overseas and say ‘what a great job done’. But when we Indians do it, it becomes weird. For me and every professional, it’s just a job, I don’t see a reason why it should be prohibited,” she added.

Salman to launch ‘Kick’ trailer at single screen theater IANS, MUMBAI

S

alman Khan has decided to release the trailer of his much-awaited film Kick at the single screen theater Gaiety Galaxy here in the midst of his fans. The movie screenings at the theater have been canceled to accommodate Salman’s plan. “Salman considers single screens very lucky for him, so he has decided to release the trailer of the film at Gaiety Galaxy on June 15 with his fans,” Manoj Desai, executive director, Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir Cinema, told IANS. “We have canceled the shows from 12 p.m. to 6 a.m. for that day as Salman has booked the screen during that time,” added Desai. The actor’s films, often the typical Bollywood masala entertainers, have been popular at single screen theaters.

PC back in Mumbai for dad’s death anniversary MUMBAI: Actress Priyanka Chopra, who was busy shooting for Dil Dhadakne Do in Europe, is back to Mumbai in time for the first death anniversary of her father Ashok Chopra. A street here, close to the actress’ residence, will be named after him. Her father, a doctor who retired from the Indian Army in 1997 as a lieutenant colonel, passed away on June 10, 2013, due to cancer. Now, a year later, a street in Yari Road is to be named after him. His “little girl” Priyanka is at peace being at home. “The home is where the heart is. Good to be in mumbai. Tizzying hyper emotions...extremes in every way...yet a stillness that’s hard to explain,” Priyanka posted on Twitter. The street naming ceremony is likely to be attended by close family and friends as well as members of the NGOs that Ashok Chopra was associated with.

L

et me stick my neck out just this once to say Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is going to be a huge success. It has all the trappings of a superlative masala entertainer, plus a thought provoking message on the uneasy relationship between the army and civilians. Hence army man Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar) who is home for a vacation uses the time to fall in love with an arranged match and also save Mumbai from a sleeper cell

terrorist attack, which threatens to plunder the city. He is a busy man. So is director

A.R. Murugadoss. They both are on the same mission. While Akshay saves the city, his director rescues the masala fare from the blemishes of blandness that it has acquired lately. Just how Murugadoss manages to mix the dark theme of terrorism with a palatable mainstream cinematic platter served with dollops of pickles and ‘papad’ is a marvel. The director’s earlier film Ghajini was another landmark of mainstream filmmaking. It suffered from excessive violence and too many resemblances to a Hollywood film (Memento) to be dismissed as coincidental. In Holiday, Murugadoss is more in charge of the proceedings. Having Akshay at the helm helps. He is a man of the streets and yet capable

of looking completely convincing as a larger than life hero. This is Akshay’s most chiselled and restrained yet boisterous and exuberant performance to date. It’s just as hard to imagine Holiday without Akshay. We often tend to think the grammar and language of mainstream cinema to be far easier to convey than the language of the socalled serious cinema. Wrong! A full-on massy product, which doesn’t resort to outlandish inanities or outright vulgarity, is the most difficult form of filmmaking. In Holiday, Murugadoss has some absolutely unflinching support from his writers and technicians, all out to create that increasingly elusive cinematic entity. The perfect entertainer. — Subhash K Jha

Big B shot stunts for TV show in body rig? MUMBAI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s fiction debut on the small screen with the series Yudh just got a lot more dangerous. The actor is said to have defied medical orders to perform some forbidden stunts in a body rig. It’s been 30 years since the Big B wore a body rig for any of his stunts in a film. After the accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982 and the beating that his body took, the veteran star was forbidden from wearing the heavy body rigs required for cinematic stunts. Until now. For the serial Yudh that he is doing, Amitabh agreed to wear a body rig for a very intricate stunt. A source said: “It was an important scene where Bachchan saab’s character Yudhishthir Sikarwar had to confront an important crisis in his life. The director Ribhu Dasgupta had been told by the Big B’s team that he wouldn’t be wearing the body rig. The last time he wore one was for Coolie when the near-fatal accident happened.

urukuls were an integral part of ancient Indian culture/ society. In today’s terms, they would be non-traditional boarding schools where the teacher (Guru) taught for free and the students were treated equally regardless of social status of their families. Bal Vihar of St Louis celebrated its Annual Day on May 11, wrapping up 22 successful years of its existence. The event provided the students with an opportunity to showcase their talents. A lot of classes came together to perform as a group. From Kindergartners to high school students, their talents were at full display. The Annual Day was also a special occasion for 11 senior youths who completed their Bal Vihar journey. These students served as teachers during their last year guiding their younger community. These students are now ready for the next level of journey that leads them towards leveraging the skills they acquired during these last few years. Chicago Sikhs take out Memorial Day parades

C

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) -- Sikh American community members of Chicago participated in the Memorial Day Parade on May 24 with a float, flags, posters, banners and a walking unit to honor and commemorate Sikh’s Contributions in World Wars. The banners featured photos and quotations which highlight the contributions of Sikh soldiers to the success of the Allied Troops during World War I and II. This was the third year that the community has participated in the annual procession. Sikh Soldiers who gallantly fought and sacrificed their lives for the success of the Allies in World Wars I & II were part of British-India Army. They bravely fought for the allies in France, Belgium, Italy, Israel and many other battle fronts. In the two world wars, 83,005 Sikh soldiers died and 109,045 were wounded while fighting for the Allied forces. “It was wonderful to see the Sikh Americans amongst the marching men and women who serve in the military services. Sikhs have a strong military heritage, it would be ironic not to let them serve their country in uniform due to their articles of faith, beard and turban,” said Rajinder Singh Mago. The two-hour-long parade organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

and Special Events stepped off at noon and proceeded south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street. There were more than 150 contingents in the parade. The Sikh unit participation was coordinated by Sarwan Singh Raju. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Duckworth the Iraq war veteran, former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and the Congresswoman of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District were the parade’s grand marshals. Preceding the parade, they laid wreaths at the Eternal Flame on Daley Plaza.

Democratic congresswoman Tammy Duckworth struggled to hold back tears during the wreath-laying ceremony to honor fallen soldiers. She lost her legs and partial use of an arm when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting in Iraq in 2004. The Chicago parade, started in 1870, is considered one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation. Participants in the parade include area high school Marching Bands, Drum and Bugle Corps, as well as many Veterans’ and Civil War Enactment groups, 6,000 JROTC students, and the

military with equipment. The Chicago Sikhs also participated in another Memorial Day Parade in Itasca Illinois coordinated by Kuldip Singh Makkar. The parade started from Bryn Mawr & Catalpa streets and ended at the Itasca train station. Sikh martial art “Gatka” was demonstrated as hundreds of spectators watched. The Chicago Sikh community also participated in Memorial Day Observance Ceremonies at Hoffman Estates Veterans Memorial Cemetery Site and at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumburg Illinois. The program included recognition of deceased military members followed by a moment of silence and musical tributes to military personnel and veterans of the army, marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. A special memorial address was given by 1st. Lt. David M. Murphy, Pillars of Honor President. Commander Marco Dabetic of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2202 received a special award. The ceremonies ended with a picnic in the garden decorated with posters of Sikh Soldiers from world wars I & II. Memorial Day has a rich history. It began shortly after the Civil War ended when General John Logan proclaimed that the 30th day of May be designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died. It was first observed on May 30, 1868.

Alderman and Police chief discuss safety steps

ALATINE (IL) -- The Sikh Religious Society (SRS) Palatine Illinois invited Chicago Region’s special agent in-charge Robert J. Holley for a friendly visit to its gurdwara in Palatine, IL on May 30. The purpose of the visit was to meet and get to know each other. Holley, who was appointed as the special agent in-charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Chicago Field Division in November, 2013, has made it apoint to reach out to various communities in his jurisdiction. Holley began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1995. Prior to that, he served nine years in the US Army as an infantry officer. Holley was welcomed by the society president Jasbir Kaur Saluja, a few board members and community leaders, and given a tour of the facilities. Jay and Jas Singh of Bloomingdale, IL presented him with a bouquet of flowers and Holley reacted by saying: “This is the first time anyone has ever given me flowers.” Holley was also treated to an informational presentation about Sikhs. “The presentation was to create an awareness of Sikh appearance, turban, beard, articles of faith, and external tangible symbols which are constant reminders of the core Sikh values,” explained Rajinder Singh Mago, coordinator of the event. In turn, Holley explained his job responsibilities and the working structure of his staff and various departments, and emphasized his personal passion about the security of citizens. His past experience and expertise happen to be international counter-terrorism. A free-flowing dialogue during a question-answer session ensued where curbing the prevalent hate crimes against

Holley even sat on the floor to observe the Sikh worship congregation, listened to the keertan (Sikh hymns) and was invited to address the gurdwara congregation. He

introduced himself to the community and assured his personal attention in case of a need. He also partook “langar” (community meal) and continued conversation in a cordial environment. His visit lasted several hours, longer than originally planned. Recruitment from the community in FBI was also discussed.

T. LOUIS (MO) – St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson went head-to-head with city aldermen recently while discussing crime in the city. The chief noted that more than 500 people had either been shot so far in 2014 and were in danger of being shot. Overall, homicides are up 44 per cent this year from last. Discussions are under way for crossdeputation, where city and county officers could work together and arrest suspects across jurisdiction in bordering areas like Jennings. But Alderman Antonio French says a lot of question remain. “What exactly our officers would be doing on the other side of the county line, how far they would go and vice versa,” French said. “It does make sense especially on the bordering wards and bordering neighborhoods for there to be some cooperation.” The chief says plans are already in place for Fair St. Louis. About 500 city officers will be on duty with additional help from the county and Highway Patrol. “We’ve canceled all the days off for all the officers in the department So, nobody’s scheduled off in recreation,” Dotson said. Chief Dotson also emphasized the value a closed circuit monitoring system will have for solving crime. That is part of a bond issue headed to voters this November.

Red lipstick

favored at work in bid for promotion: Survey 40 percent of women believe the flirting with the boss is more likely to gain them promotion at work IANS, LONDON

A

red lipstick beauty look ensures you stand out from the crowd but what is more interesting that women are wearing this look at the workplace to help in getting a promotion, new research says. Nearly half of British women wear red lipstick to work to

impress their boss, according to the survey. The research, done by Escentual.com — a premier beauty destination — found that 40 percent of women regularly arrive at the office sporting an alluring scarlet shade of lipstick in an attempt to attract the attention of their male bosses, reports femalefirst.co.uk. And even more women, nearly two thirds, would wear heavy eye make-up in order to be noticed by their male superiors. Perhaps the reason for this bold and sexy make-up is that 40 percent of women believe that flirting with the boss is more likely to gain them promotion at work. And the clothing choices appear to be a lot more provocative than before as well, with almost half of women admitting that they would defy conservative office dress codes and wear low-cut blouses and high heels in the work place. Surprisingly most women said they would team their pillarbox red pout with heavy eye make-up, including dark eye-shadow, eyeliner and mascara. “A red lip is no longer a look reserved for a date or a night out,” said Emma Leslie, beauty editor of Escentual.com. “For whatever reasons, more and more women are introducing red lipstick into their office make-up routine, but it’s important to make sure you don’t go overboard,” she cautioned.

Make the most of strawberries Jewellery trend 2014: Chokers IANS, LONDON

S

trawberries are making their way in the summer menus, so get ready to eat them dipped in chocolate, smothered in cream, dropped in champagne or simply eaten fresh. What’s more — they can add to your beauty and health too! Neil Nugent, executive chef of product development at Morrisons, a chain of

supermarkets in Britain, provides his top five ways to make the most of your strawberries this summer, reports femalefirst.co.uk. n Try dipping in a good balsamic vinegar. It’s a perfect appetizer. n Serve whole with shaved parmesan cheese, a kind of Italian extra-hard cheeses. The salty cheese goes perfectly with the strawberries to create a sweet fragrant flavor.

n Try on a skewer-rub with a

little olive oil, then barbeque quickly over hot coals and then serve with freshly ground black pepper n Strawberries are perfect for smoothies with a little yoghurt, banana and orange juice. Crush strawberries using a fork with a little sugar and freshly chopped mint. This is delicious served with vanilla ice cream.

D

esigners across the globe are trying to bring back the charm of choker neckpieces, and are positioning it as a "must-have accessory" this season. The last time choker necklace grabbed attention was the Dolce & Gabbana "Love" piece that singer-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham wore. Now, Holly Fulton, Balmain and Saint Laurent are some of the designers who are focussing on this accessory to ensure that all eyes are drawn to the neck. The trend is popular at red carpet events too. American actress Elle Fanning wore one with her Elie Saab Couture gown to the world premiere of the Hollywood movie Maleficent and recently, American socialite Olivia Palermo wore a simple gold choker to the CFDA Fashion Awards 2014 in New York, reports femalefirst.co.uk. If you're planning to follow the trend, just avoid wearing them with fussy necklines.
