oters in Jammu and Kashmir defied a boycott call by separatist groups and braved inclement weather to cast their ballot in large numbers on November 25 as 15 assembly constituencies voted in the first of the five-phase state polls. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Umang Narula told the media in Jammu that more than 70 percent of the over one million voters cast their ballot. Polling was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere during the day. Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi told the media in Delhi that the constituencies had seen 64.97 percent turnout in the 2008 elections and 52.63 percent in the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year. “It is a good increase. The voting percentage seems to be on the higher side,” Zutshi said, adding that there could be an increase of about

Obama accepts Modi invite, to join R-Day celebrations With US President Barack Obama confirming he would visit India, Obama would become the first US president to come to India a second time during his term of office IANS, NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama has accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invite to be chief guest for the 2015 Republic Day, and will be the first US president to grace the occasion as chief guest. “We have now received a confirmation through diplomatic channels of President Obama agreeing to come to India as the 1st US President for a Republic Day function as the Chief Guest,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a statement. He said the “prime minister had a very successful visit to USA earlier during the year in September.

Sharif urges Obama to take up Kashmir issue with India ISLAMABAD: As US President Barack Obama confirmed his India visit for the Republic Day next year, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif urged him to take up the Kashmir issue with India. Obama spoke to Nawaz Sharif over telephone on November 21. Sharif said an early resolution of the Kashmir issue would bring enduring peace, stability and economic cooperation to the south Asian region, Dawn online reported. Sharif apprised Obama of Pak-

istan’s relations with India and referred to his visit to India earlier this year. However, the Pakistani side claimed that the cancellation of foreign secretary level talks by India and the “unprovoked firing” across the Line of Control (LoC) “indicated that India was averse to normalisation of relations with Pakistan.” “Thus, while we remain open to the resumption of bilateral dialogue, the onus is on India to create a conducive environment in this regard,” an official statement said.

Following this, as a personal initiative, he did extend an invitation to President Obama to be the Chief Guest of our next Republic Day celebrations during a diplomatic conversation”. “We will now look forward to this development which stems from the initiative of our PM, which followed their bilateral meeting in Washington,” he said. Breaking the news, Modi had

tweeted: “This Republic Day, we hope to have a friend over...invited President Obama to be the 1st US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest.” The invitation to Obama comes weeks after Modi’s hugely successful visit to the US. Modi and Obama also met on the sidelines of G20 summit in Brisbane Nov 14. Obama had called Modi a “man of action”.

ndian-American owned and other businesses in Ferguson, Missouri, on November 25 braced as the town erupted into violence after a grand jury declined to indict a white police officer in the fatal August shooting of an unarmed black teenager. More than a dozen buildings, including locally-owned businesses, were set on fire and windows smashed in small town of 22,000, nearly 70 percent of them black, but all but four of its 53 strong police force white, after Monday night’s verdict. Missouri city looked like a war zone with an entire row of businesses on West Florissant Avenue, a major thoroughfare, were engulfed in flames, CNN reported. Police cars and a row of vehicles at a nearby dealership were turned into fireballs. Police in Ferguson made at least 61 arrests on charges ranging from unlawful assembly to burglary to unlawful possession of a firearm to arson, it said. Protests were also held across the US, including in Los Angeles, New

York and Washington, after the grand jury failed to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown after an incident in the St. Louis suburb on August 9. They led marches, waved signs and shouted chants of “Hands up, don’t shoot,” the refrain that has become a rallying cry in protests over police killings across the country, according to CBS News. Shortly after November 23 night’s verdict, speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama joined Michael Brown’s

parents in calling on anyone who protests to do so peacefully. Community leaders have also asked for calm. But many activists have promised more waves of protests nationwide on November 24 as the racially charged case in Ferguson inflamed tensions over what Obama called broader challenges of “the mistrust between law enforcement and communities of color”. The president said he had instructed Attorney General Eric Holder to work with cities across the country.

A

head of the first ministerial-level meeting of the Trade Policy Forum (TPF) in four years, the Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman on November 24 described as a “big deal” the recent agreement with India on the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) aimed at easing custom rules. “The TFA is a big deal which will be effective in reducing the cost of doing business for developed countries by 10 percent and that for developing countries by 14 percent, adding billions of dollars to the world economy”

Froman said at a meeting of corporate leaders and officials organised here at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has successfully negotiated with the US to resolve the WTO impasse on the food security issue. Froman said the agreement, which also reflects shared understandings regarding the WTO’s work ‘n food security, is in line with the US commitment to address the needs of India’s food security. He underlined the importance of Obama’s visit in January, which would mark the first ever presence by a US president in R-Day celebrations.

Modi, in his maiden speech to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) here, urged the nations to work together to “change cynicism to optimism” and added that it is time that the member nations are not just “paas paas” (next to each other) but also “saath saath” (standing together).

Security, stronger ties priority for Nepal KATHMANDU: Nepal as the new chair of Saarc will focus on connectivity, security and eradicating extreme poverty, said Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on November 26. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit here, Koirala stressed that the bloc has to work towards freeing the people from “inhuman” poverty and enhancing healthcare, education and women’s empowerment. “Lack of connectivity has kept us far apart, it requires a quantum jump to link the member countries together, including trade liberalization. We need to build roads, ports, waterways and facilitate movement of goods, people and capital. Then we can achieve the theme of this summit in a real sense,” he added. The prime minister described terrorism as a “common enemy,” and called for joint effort to combat terrorism. The Prime Minister also called for the strengthening of institutional frameworks with deeper cooperation on law and order as well as sharing of critical information, especially endemic corruption. On the formulation of Nepal’s new constitution, the Prime Minister said democracy and rule of law, good governance and inclusiveness would lay the foundation for a peaceful country.

Modi recalls the horror of Mumbai attack KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 26 recalled the horror of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack at the Saarc Summit and stressed on the need to combat “terrorism and transnational crimes”. “Today, as we remember the horror of the terror attack in Mumbai in 2008, we feel the endless pain of lost lives,” said Modi said at the opening of the two-day Saarc Summit here. “Let us work together to fulfil the pledge we have taken to combat terrorism and trans-national crimes,” he said.

Speaking mostly in English, the prime minister also referred to terrorism. “Let us work together to fulfil the pledge we have taken to combat terrorism and trans-national crimes,” he said, without naming Pakistan. Urging for seamless connectivity in the region, Modi said “for India, our vision for the region rests on five pillars — trade, invest-

belief in shared opportunities,” he said. He said there is a need to “shrink the distance between producers and consumers and use the most direct routes of trade”. The Prime Minister, in his speech stressed that “infrastructure is our region's greatest weakness and its most pressing need” and referred to his earlier proposal of travelling to Kathmandu by road, which had to be called off due to the poor condition of roads at the border.

‘Common Saarc voice to fight terrorism’ KATHMANDU: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 26 called for a common voice among South Asian nations on international issues and cooperation on eradicating terrorism regionally and globally. “We gather here with renewed focus, desiring greater integration for peace and prosperity. Saarc has been evolving for almost three decades which is at a crucial juncture. There is a need to shift from traditional approaches and implement a result-oriented action that impacts directly on the people,” he said while addressing the summit.

Modi, who in his departure statement said the fact that he was visiting Nepal twice in the six months since he took over “reflects the importance we attach to our

unique and special relations with Nepal”, also held delegation-level talks with his Nepali counterpart Sushil Koirala. Both sides held talks on a slew of strategic issues, including defence and security, during their 40-minute talks. Modi, who is here to attend the 18th Saarc Summit, urged Nepal to frame its much-awaited constitution early and on the basis of consensus. Addressing a gathering during handing over of a 200-bed trauma center built by India, Modi said writing the constitution was

Modi SARKAR:

Infusing dynamism IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n the six months he has ruled India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demonstrated a new style of governance, of a “taskmaster” in his own words, peppered with some out-of-thebox thinking that has won him admirers and raised hopes among the people at a level unseen in recent years. This is the overall assessment of a cross-section of those IANS spoke to about this 64-year-old master communicator, who is seen heading the most powerful Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after the Indira Gandhi era — deftly merging the needs of modern India with subtle touches of Hindutva politics. Having decimated the Congress, he has promised to improve governance, create new jobs, boost infrastructure and clean up India, among a host of other initiatives, while charting a fresh path to improve the country’s ties with a host of nations — from West to the East. After taking office May 26, he has sought to remove sloth from officialdom and to make the government target-driven and decisive. The former Gujarat chief

Major initiatives of Modi government The following are the major initiatives of the Narendra Modi government: n Swachh Bharat Mission to improve cleanliness in five years. n Padhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana to ensure that every family has at least one bank account. n Make in India campaign to showcase India as an investment destination. n Shramev Jayate initiative to streamline vocational training. n Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana for adoption of villages by MPs - to create model villages.

minister, now the Bharatiya Janata Party’s tallest leader, also favours rules and processes that are people friendly. Former cabinet secretary Prabhat Kumar calls Modi a decisive leader who has taken some major initiatives but said it was too early to judge his government’s performance. “In the last 25 years, I have not seen a prime minister as decisive as him. The way he looks at the India of future, he has a dream,” Kumar told IANS. Kumar thinks that the next annual budget, expected in February 2015, would be a major policy document.

n Inclusion of people’s voice in policy making through Digital India initiative. n New Department for skill development created. n Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana to train 10 lakh rural youth in three years. n Licensing procedure and certification procedure streamlined. Unified web portal for labour law compliance.

“Thereafter, the results will have to be shown (on the ground).” For now, what has generated nationwide interest is the Clean India campaign Modi announced from the Red Fort in his first Independence Day address. The other major initiatives of the BJP-led government include Jan Dhan Yojana, Sharamev Jayate, Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, Sardar Patel Awas Yojana and Jeevan Praman.

A happening six months of foreign policy under Modi NEW DELHI: A very happening six months of foreign policy has been one of the highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, with interactions with most of the world, including even the distant islands in the South Pacific. For a man who was seen as a newbie to the high-flying, tough-negotiating world of global diplomacy, the Modi government began its innings with the major diplomatic initiative of inviting South Asian leaders, including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, to his May 26 swearing-in, a move that took everyone, including the invitees, by surprise. Since that day, the prime minister or his foreign minister Sushma Swaraj have been busy interacting with most of the world and setting a scorching pace for the country’s diplomats. Modi has met all the Permanent Five members of the UN — the US, Russia, China, Britain and France — meeting

some twice. He met US President Barack Obama during the successful White House bilateral in September and during the G20 in Brisbane, Australia. He has met Chinese President Xi

Jinping thrice — the first time during the BRICS summit in Fortaleza, Brazil, July 17, then at the bilateral when Xi came to India in September and again on the sidelines of the G20.

Modi has met Russian President Vladimir Putin twice — in Brazil and Brisbane, and is slated to meet him during the India-Russia annual summit in New Delhi in December. Modi met British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande during the G20 in Brisbane. Modi, now in Nepal for the 18th Saarc Summit, returned from a hectic 10-day three-nation tour last week. He had left on November 10 for Myanmar, Australia and Fiji during which he attended four major multilateral meets, interacted with some 40 world leaders and held nearly 20 bilaterals. He attended the ASEAN-India and East Asia Summit in Myanmar, the G20 in Australia and the first summit meeting with the 14 South Pacific Island nations, which is to become an annual event. Modi spoke at length at each fora,

reassuring the world and regional leaders about the ease of doing business in India and the change in policies under his government. During the G20, Modi’s intervention on the need for transparency and automatic sharing of information in money transactions led the final G20 communique to adopt the point, which is expected to help India in getting back black money stashed abroad. In Myanmar, Modi stressed his government’s policy of “not just Looking East, but Acting East”. His meeting with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was the second having met him when the latter came to India in September. The two leaders appear to have struck a warmth in their relationship, with both exchanging warm hugs and handshakes frequently and referring to each other by their first names.

oters in Jammu and Kashmir defied a boycott call by separatist groups and braved inclement weather to cast their ballot in large numbers on November 25 as 15 assembly constituencies voted in the first of the five-phase state polls.

Adjournment motion over black money rejected NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on November 26 rejected a notice by the Congress party for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on the issue of black money. She also refused to suspend the question hour to discuss the matter. Mahajan, however, agreed to let the matter, which is already listed in the business of the day, be discussed at the earliest. The adjournment motion was moved by Congress members, including leader of the party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge (in picture), M. Veerappa Moily and Kamal Nath. The speaker said she will see to it that the debate is taken up as soon as possible. Kharge said the issue was important as it related to the promises made by the Prime Minister

Bi voted in Ramban district, becoming the oldest person to vote in the first phase. The CEO said 31 sorties were made by Mi-7 helicopters and 12 by smaller choppers to ferry polling staff and voting machines to and

from inaccessible areas. “The highest polling was recorded in Sonawari with 80.1 percent, while the lowest was recorded in Ganderbal with 53 percent,” Narula said. Peaceful polling took place at all the 1,787 polling stations in seven districts. In Ladakh region, Nubra saw 75 percent polling, Zanskar 71.07, Leh 66 and Kargil 59.82. In the Kashmir Valley, Sonawari recorded 80.1 percent, Kangan 76.83, Bandipora 70 and Gurez 77.1, while in Jammu region, Doda saw 79.6 percent polling, Ramban 68, Bannihal 70, Kishtwar 68.8, Inderwal 72.5 and Bahderwah 70.7. Polling was low key initially because of the winter cold, especially in the Ladakh region where temperatures were much below freezing point. As the day progressed, balloting picked up, as voters lined up at polling booths. People said they were voting for change and development. Vote count will take place on December 23 after the last of the five-phase elections ends on December 20.

ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to bring back black money within 100 days of coming to power and failure to do so amounted to violation of promises. TMC leader Sudip Bandhopadhyay said placing the discussion on black money as the “last item” of the day’s agenda was like discussing black money in the darkness of night.

harkhand voters also defied a poll boycott call by Maoists and turned up in large numbers to cast their ballot in the first of the five-phase assembly elections. Voting took place in 13 of the 81 assembly constituencies in six Maoist-affected districts. Over three million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, of whom about 1.8 million exercised their franchise.

Voting took place in 13 of the 81 assembly constituencies in six districts.

Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha, who briefed the media about the Jharkhand elections in Delhi, said the polling percentage in 13 constituencies that went to the polls was 61.92 percent. He said these constituencies saw 58 percent polling in the 2009 assembly polls as well as in the Lok

Sabha elections. Voter turnout was good in Maoist affected areas despite a boycott call. The young and the old were seen queueing up at polling stations. An election official told IANS in Ranchi: “The highest turnout was in Bhavnathpur with 69.6 percent, while the lowest was in Chatra.”

Six years after 26/11: maritime security stronger in coastal areas IANS, MUMBAI

I

mproved co-ordination of some 15 national and state security agencies as well as continuous coastal surveillance have led to a much stronger maritime security, authorities said on November 26, a day on which six years ago the Mumbai terror attack took place. After the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, the Indian Navy took the lead along with the other agencies to increase coastal patrolling of the entire west coast of India and detected potential threats and preventive actions were initiated to ward them off.

As many as 166 people, including 26 foreigners, were gunned down during 60 hours of terror unleashed by 10 Pakistanis who sneaked into Mumbai on November 26, 2008. Over a 100 joint exercises among various agencies engaged in coastal security were conducted in all the coastal states to strengthen maritime security. Modern technical measures like a chain of 74 Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) receivers to seamless cover of the entire coast has been implemented, besides 46 coastal radars on the mainland and the islands. A second phase of coastal radars is currently under implementation to

plug small gaps in some places. As part of the efforts to beef Maritime Domain Awareness, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the National Command Control Communication & Intelligence Network (NC3I). The nodal hub for coastal security implemented by the Indian Navy has proved to be a major step in establishing a ‘coastal security shield’ on the coasts. Issuing of Identity Cards to all fishermen, registration of over 200,000 fishing vessels, equipping them with suitable equipment, facilitating vessel identification and tracking through a single centralized database have been undertaken.

OBITUARY: SITARA DEVI (1920-2014)

Sitara Devi: A dancing star fades away

Kathak star Sitara Devi's death leaves huge void in the realm of Indian dance; she performed at Carnegie Hall, New York and Royal Albert Hall, London QUAID NAJMI, MUMBAI

I

n an era when men wore women’s costumes in theatre, dramas, songs and even the fledgling film industry, one young Indian dancer shattered stereotypes. She was Sitara Devi. Born in Kolkata as Dhanalakshmi, and called Dhanno, as she was born on Diwali in 1920, Sitara Devi later became a living legend — a renowned exponent of the classical Kathak style of Indian dance. A school dropout, Sitara Devi struggled against all odds to excel in her chosen field and brought Kathak from the domain of nautch girls to the global arena. Her performance at the age of 16 before India’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Mumbai left him so impressed that he bestowed on her the title ‘Nritya Samragini’ (Empress of Dance). Sitara Devi came from an ordinary but talented Brahmin family of Varanasi which lived in Kolkata

and later in Mumbai. Her father Sukhadev Maharaj was a Sanskrit scholar, researched in Bharat Natyashastra and was a Kathak dancer-teacher, a member of the Royal Court of Nepal, and mother Matsya Kumari was related to Nepal royal family. Sukhadev Maharaj introduced reforms to revive Kathak by including religious elements — unlike what the nautch girls did — and it slowly became popular. He also taught Kathak to his daughters Alakananda, Tara, Dhanno (later Sitara Devi) and sons Chaube and Pande.

hangachimadam, a fishing village in Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, erupted in joy on November 21 when the five fishermen who escaped from the jaws of death in Sri Lanka reached home safely. The five fishermen — Emerson, P. Augustus, R. Wilson, K. Prasath and J. Langlet — who were sentenced to death by a Sri Lankan court for smuggling drugs, were given a rousing reception when they reached their village after being released from the Sri Lankan jail following a presidential pardon. Fire crackers were burst and drums were played to celebrate their safe homecoming after spending three years in a Sri Lankan jail. “There are no words to describe seeing my family and friends after a long time,” Emerson said. He was seeing his second son for the first time. With tears of joy in their eyes, their family members hugged the freed fishermen.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on November 24 requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to instruct the external affairs ministry to secure the release of 38 Indian fishermen from Sri Lankan jails. “May I request you to instruct the Ministry of External Affairs to take up the matter immediately and ensure the prompt release of the 38 fishermen, including the 14 detained, who are languishing in Sri Lankan jails and the release of 78 boats currently in Sri Lankan custody,” said Panneerselvam in a letter to Modi.

The five fishermen addressed the gathering from a specially built stage. They thanked the central and Tamil Nadu governments and also appreciated the efforts of their association leaders. Many Tamil Nadu ministers were present at the venue. The state government has announced financial

Naoki gave a presentation on how to increase the yield of rice per acre, land preparation, nursery and planting, crop management and harvesting. He said by using the latest techniques, farmers can get 50 percent more profit. Naidu extended an invitation to Yanmar to explore opportunities in Andhra and help the state in making agriculture profitable and sustainable. Yanmar recently tied-up with Tamil Nadu-based Murugappa Group. The chief minister invited Yanmar Group to set up a manufacturing facility in the state. He said manufacturing in Andhra Pradesh would enable an access to all the markets in Asia because of the ports. “Our single-window clearance, rapid approvals and 24X7 power are the attractive points,” he said. ‘RUDHRAMADEVI’ LEAVES CHENGAPPA AWESTRUCK Actor felt nervous working with big stars; also the use of latest tech in the 3D film left her mesmerized IANS, CHENNAI

S

outhern actor Aditi Chengappa, who plays an important role in upcoming Telugu period-drama Rudhramadevi, says the experience of working in the film left her completely awestruck. “I was mostly awestruck during the course of the shoot. Everywhere you look on the sets, there’s so much to be in awe about. From the sets to the costumes, there’s so much to rave about,” Aditi told IANS. “I was also in awe of the cast, which sometimes was quite intimidating because it’s not easy to share stage with some great actors. There

were so many scenes when all the actors would be seen in one frame. To be present alongside them and act can take your breath away,” she said. Aditi was equally mesmerized by the technology used for the movie, which is being shot in 3D. “I’m a gadget geek and I love photography. Whenever I’m not shooting, I’ll be near the camera-

FILM REVIEW | TELUGU

‘Naaigal Jaakirathai’: Entertaining, but beware of cliches

T

here are some genuinely good and bad moments in Naaigal Jaakirathai. As promised, the makers went on to credit the dog, Idoh, a Belgian Shepherd first in the title card, which is a sweet gesture (good part), but only to later give it a hero tag (bad part) and make it do everything a Tamil cinema’s hero is expected to do. In Tamil films, the hero always has a best friend, and here our hero Karthika’s best friend turns out to be the dog named Subramani. Now, since you have a hero and his

best friend, there are certain things Film: “Naaigal Jaakirathai”; Cast: Sibiraj, Idoh (a Belgian Shepherd); Director: Shakti Soundar Rajan; Rating: *** Tamil audiences expect or our filmmakers are keen to show them — like a booze scene, a song about their friendship and so on. Naaigal Jaakirathai suffers from all these cliches even though the intent was to entertain the masses. Audiences may have enjoyed when they find the hero and the dog drunk as a skunk in a scene, but

that’s not just now how you portray the bond between the two. The story of how the dog meets the hero is interesting. Both have lost someone very important and they fill in that vacant spot in each other’s lives. But what’s surprising is how a trained police dog can be initially so disobedient to Karthik. More could’ve been achieved in this laudable attempt but the director’s willingness to not challenge the cliches is very much evident. Nevertheless, Naaigal Jaakirathai is entertaining but beware of the formulaic presentation.

Salman’s ‘Kick’

MAY GET A SEQUEL SOON

Kick, directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, Kick has become the highest grosser of Salman’s career collecting over ` 2 billion SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

S

alman Khan has never done a sequel to his films, except for Dabangg, but that might change soon with a sequel of the superstar’s last released film Kick. According to sources close to the project, Kick, directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, which is Salman’s highest grosser to date, may write out its sequel sooner than expected.

Will bring back Bollywood to Kashmir: Narendra Modi

IANS, KISHTWAR

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on November 21 said he would bring back the glory days of Bollywood when films were shot in Kashmir. “I have to bring back Bollywood to Kashmir,” Modi said while addressing a BJP rally in this Jammu and Kashmir town. Noting that the fastest growing

industry in the world today is the tourism industry, he said: “I have to bring back tourism to the state and I have to make Jammu and Kashmir the ultimate tourist destination in the world.” A number of movies have been shot in Kashmir, including Kashmir Ki Kali, Highway, Mission Kashmir, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and more recently Haider in recent time.

I like to come to India: Arnold Schwarzenegger NEW DELHI: Hollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger says that India is a great country and he would like to visit the nation whenever he gets the chance. The actor was a guest speaker at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here and while

concluding the session, he promised to come back in his iconic dialogue from The Terminator. “I will be back. I like to come to India which is a great country with talented people and GDP going up. I will be coming to India in February for an environmental conference,” he said. During his session, he also pointed out the importance of protecting the environment.

Kick has become the highest grosser of Salman’s career. It has so far accrued a total box-office collection of `2.34 billion. That beats the earlier Salman starrer Ek Tha Tiger which netted `1.88 billion worldwide. “Sajid is now being told by his distributors and friends to carry the story forward into a sequel because it makes a lot of business sense,” a source said. Nadiadwala, however, is in two minds as he has his hands full as a producer.

“It’s been a tremendous year for me. God has been kind. ‘Kick’ became far bigger than we imagined. And it’s all because of Salman’s star-power. I don’t know whether I can direct again for a while. My hands are full with productions. I don’t deny there is a growing demand to direct again. All I can say is, wait and watch,” said Nadiadwala. Released in July this year, Kick also featured Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Jacqueline Fernandez.

‘3 Idiots’ soon in Chinese, French and English? IANS, PANAJI

F

ilmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra says he wants to make the blockbuster 3 Idiots in various languages because it left an impact on many people’s lives. “I’d like to make 3 Idiots in Chinese, French and English. I would love to make it in every language in the world. It changed many lives including my daughter. She left media studies and learnt Kathak. Now, she teaches dance,” said Chopra, who also confessed that while growing up, he couldn’t tell his father that he wanted to be a filmmaker and not a doctor. The Rajkumar Hirani directorial, which criticized the education

system in India without being too preachy, released in India in 2009. The Chopra production featured Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor. Chopra made the remarks

at the Film Bazaar’s “Master Class with Vidhu Vinod Chopra: a dialogue between Filmmakers”, where he was interviewed by director Sudhir Mishra, who had worked with him in 1985 film Khamosh.

‘Happy Ending’: Flawed but feisty and relevant Film: “Happy Ending”; Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D’Cruz, Govinda, Kalki Koechlin, Ranveer Shorey; Director: Raj Nidimoru/Krishna D.K.; Rating: ****

O

kay, so in how many ways do we get to see the Modern Indian Bollywood Hero (MIBH) play the commitmentphobic Casanova? See that guy out there. We’ve seen him many times before, and played by Saif Ali Khan many times. Somehow for all its sins of redundancy, Happy Ending still manages to keep the narrative in a ceaseless state of sparkle. Saif is that kind of an actor. He brings a shuffling nervous energy to each frame. He never does the same thing in exactly the same way twice. This is what keeps him going as the

king of the rom-com. Think Hum Tum. Think Dil Chahta Hai. Think Cocktail. Think Salaam Namaste... In fact, Preity Zinta shows up in a disarming cameo as one of the

women the MIBH has dumped in the past. They continue to share a healthy relationship where bitterness has no place. In fact, one of the film’s most endearing episodes is when Preity shows up at Saif’s place with her brood of children after a fight with her husband. Dig out dependability in a man who has dumped you? Nice! This is the kind of resolvable urbane conflict that Happy Ending excels at. As Saif tells Kareena Kapoor (trying hard to look involved) in the film’s prologue, “There is no depth in me. What you see is what you get”. Amen. Saif again plays the jerk with a roving eye with a goofy panache that is cartoonish in its directness. He strips his hero of all vanity and lets him roam naked in the wilderness.

HI INDIA DRIVE AGAINST FAKE TRAVEL AGENCIES BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO, IL -The days of bogus travel agencies who swindle customers by misusing the names of reputed companies in the United States are now numbered. Following complaints from countless readers who have been taken for a ride by these fly-by-night agents, Hi India has launched a campaign to raise the curtain on the various tricks and enticements used by them to bleed innocent travelers white. Investigating reporters of Hi have found out how these mammon-worshipping travel agencies pull the wool over the gullible victims’ eyes.

DIRT-CHEAP RATES These smart alecks, mostly from Midwest and East Coast regions, target credulous customers by offering round trips at dirt-cheap rates. They open new businesses claiming to be representing established, top-drawer travel companies in a bid to gain the confidence and trust of the prospective patrons. Times out of number, HI has received phone calls and emails from customers who have been led up the garden path by fraudulent companies who offer tickets at prices much cheaper than the market rates. No wonder, close-fisted buyers

Petlad residents live it up at get-together

instantly fall into their trap. The fake agents confirm the tickets by charging the fees from the credit cards or cashier checks given by the customers and even send temporary confirmation details to the passengers to keep them in good humor. But as the travel time nears, the passengers or the victims soon discover to their shock that their tickets have been cancelled and there is no longer any confirmation available on their names. When the customers try to reach the concerned travel agents from whom they have purchased the tickets, they find that their phone numbers or contact information is no longer available as their phone numbers are either disconnected or are not in service. FAKE EMAIL IDS Again, the email addresses of these shady

travel agencies are fake working only for a certain period. Indeed, such scams are the order of the day even as the flim-flam travel agents operate from around the globe and target particular countries. They register different code numbers with the local area code to grab local clients of that particular region and even woo customers from here, there and everywhere by inserting advertisements in local newspapers and on television channels and also through email blasts. For example, HI recently learnt that some anonymous emails were being forwarded to the South Asian community in Chicagoarea claiming that Air Tours are affiliated with Patel Travel which has been under the scanner. one of the travel company (Patel Travel) which is under investigation. But, on checking with Air Tours, officials of the well-known company told HI a different story that could shock anyone. Well, Air Tours has been in the business for over 25 years in Chicago and is one of the trusted companies in Midwest Area. HI also found that Air Tours was one of the top tickets sellers and had tied up with prestigious airlines like Air India, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Jet Airways, Turkish Airlies and Sri Lankan Airlines. Air Tours is the wholesaler to the travel

agents and has been selling tickets to the community with trust and confidence for more than 25 years. PATEL TRAVEL, WHO? What shellshocked HI was the fact that Air tours is an independent company and has never appointed any travel agent to represent it or use the name of Air Tours for business in the travel sector. Air Tours was stunned to learn that Patel Travel had been using their reputed name to cheat unworldly customers without their knowledge and were presenting its affiliation with Air tours which was not the case. Since Air Tours is owned by Patel Brothers, Patel Travel used the name ‘Patel’ to misrepresent as an affiliated company with Air Tours/Patel Brothers. Patel Brothers has branches all over the US and has been serving the community for more than a decade. The moral of the story? It’s time to guard against shifty travel companies who offer ‘cheap’ tickets. One must do some prior research or survey before buying or purchasing the tickets from any company, particularly those firms who have mushroomed recently. The best advice from HI is not to buy tickets from travel agents with whom you don’t have any previous experience.

About 120 people of 45 families attended the function held at Mount Prospect community hall on November 16. Prof Sharad Shah gave a welcome speech and read out a message from Dr Sudhir Parikh, Padma Shri and chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media. “It is nice to organize the gathering of hometown members, by which we can have a better understanding of our roots and culture and inculcate ethical values in the young generation and help them know the rich heritage”, said Dr Parikh in his message.

Pushpanjali CD to be launched soon

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) -- Chicago’s very own artists have created a collection of original bhajans, Pushpanjali, the CD of which will be launched soon. Dr Pushpa Khurana, a 90-year-old retired physician from India, who now lives in the Chicago area, wrote the bhajans. Her daughter Abhi Ganju enlisted help from her friend Tara Swaminathan to compose the melodies, and another friend, Navneet Malhotra orchestrated the accompaniments, and together they have produced a CD of seven bhajans. The bhajans encompass universal themes such as seeing the divine in nature, letting go of the ego, feeling inner bliss, the immortality of the soul, one’s humbleness before God, and praises of Krishna and Shiva. The CD is not for sale, but is available to anyone who is interested in listening to it. The live performance and the CD launch is planned for December 7.

HICAGO, IL -Political activist Salman Aftab hosted a meetand-greet with the Mayoral Candidate Alderman of 2nd ward Bob Fioretti on November 16. This was the first of the three such events with the Mayoral Candidates in the

upcoming City Council elections. The next meet-and-greet with Commissioner Jeses ‘Chuy’ Garcia will be announced soon. These events are organized before each elections by AMT-PAC to endorse candidates and inform the community about the contestants they could offer their support.

Prominent businessman and political leader Rashid Chaudry thanked the Alderman and encouraged the community to be more pro-active in local politics. Prominent Indian American and former Du-Page county Trustee Moin Khan Moon also participated in the question-answer session.

SHREE RAM-JANAKI VIVAH FETE AT GRAYSLAKE TEMPLE BY A STAFF WRITER

G

RAYSLAKE (IL) – The Shree Ram-Ma Janaki Vivah Utsav, one of the most vibrant events of the Hindu Mandir, Grayslake, was celebrated on November 22 with utmost spirituality and joy. On the previous night, more than 150 female devotees enjoyed Ma Janaki Mehndi Rat, a charming tradition, by singing bhajans and enjoying the night with tasty snacks and hot masala tea. The next day, Ram Barat led by Ashvani Singh and family with drums, Doli and traditionally dressed women reached Temple Dwar with its royal procession. Warm welcome of Barat and Dwar Pujan was done by Savita and Prabhakar Joshi with all Vedic rituals. Pt. Anil Joshi Ji and Pt Ganesh Ji greeted each other and introduced relatives with Gotrachaar from both sides who in turn did Hasta Milap, Uttariya Exchange with big hugs. Shiva Dhanush which was placed in front of Lord Ram and Lakshman was broken by young children. Later, Pt. Ganesh Ji led the Pujan of Goddess Gauri by Ma Janaki along with devotees.

Lord Ram and Ma Janaki vivah was performed by Pt. Joshi Ji with all the Hindu Vivah rituals such as Var Pujan, offering of Madhuparakam, Kanyadaan, Godaan, Jayamala, Agni Pradakshana, Mangalsutra tying, Sindhoor offering, etc. Then came the heart-breaking emotional moment of Kanya-Bidai: the sending-off of Janak Dulari to Ayodhya. Devotees carried Ma Janaki in a beautifullydecorated Doli by Geetha Patil with their heavy hearts as Rita Patel sang a heartrending Bidai song along with Vijay Ghai and Kamlesh Desai that left the devotees chokd with emotions. Pt Joshi Ji delivered his enlightening Pravachan on what an ideal sacred marriage

is. He said that the breaking of Shiva Dhanush by Shree Ram symbolized the breaking of one’s ego before entering Grihasthashram. Without winning over ego, Gyan cannot merge with Bhakti as Shri Ram symbolizes ‘Gyan’ and Ma Janaki signifies ‘Bhakti’. Gyan is incomplete unless it merges with Bhakti. He also narrated a rare story of Lord Ram wearing a peacock feather crown as he was wearing it in his Vivah Utsav this year. Archana, offering of Bhoga and Aarti, were performed by Pt. Joshi Ji. A sumptuous “Raja Janak Bhojan” was arranged for the devotees to enjoy the Vivah Utsav of Sita and Rama. More than 300 devotees enjoyed Utsav in the midst of a little warmer day. Joshi Ji blessed all the devotees to have good health, wealth and lots of happiness and prosperity in life and sponsor families for supporting the temple events and upholding Hindu values. President Harsh Kumar thanked devotees for their enthusiasm at the Shree Ram-Ma Janaki Vivah Utsav and volunteers for their valuable time in making this Utsav a grand success.

GOA—SMALL STATE, BIG ATTRACTIONS BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- A meet-and-greet road show and a video presentation organized recently by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) by teaming up with Air India here seeking to boost Goa as a tourists’ paradise met with a measure of success despite the absence of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Parrikar had to fly back to New Delhi as he was getting a berth as Defense Minister in the Federal Ministry headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, his vacuum was filled perfectly by Air India’s Midwest Bureau Chief Nakul Chand along with Sanjay Shetye representing GTDC and Iftekhar Shareef, FIA Trustee Chair, deputizing for Parrikar. The show at Ritz Carlton hotel in Chicago downtown was spiced with brief speeches by Vandana Walia and Seema Arora of Vchilli, and classical Bollywood dances by local artists. A 10-minute video highlighting various sporting, shopping, cultural and leisure activities that Goa offers was well appreciated by the local travel magnates, invitees and members of ethnic Indian media. Goa, with its beaches, forests, lakes, sanctuaries and surrounding mountains, was enchanting and this, coupled with its celebration of major Indian festivals as well as its diverse religious institutions, handicrafts, cuisine and nightlife made it an irresistible tourist spot. A conscious effort was made to promote

medical tourism capping with its special attraction of casinos in the only Indian state that has legalized, gambling. Architectural landmarks, especially fortifications, and archeology sites were shown. Though Goa is the smallest Indian state, its diversity as ‘a veritable anthology of people’ was beautifully described by Seema Arora in her speech. She pointed out with 15 of India’s 25 best beaches, Goa is also India’s richest state with a per capita GDP equivalent to more than twice that of the country. Goa monthly created the world’s first ambigram tourist logo that reads the same both ways. The Konkani word ‘Kenna’ has inspired its Rio-inspired carnival “Kenna Rio, kenna Goa!” Brewed from cashews or coconut, the local drink feni can be had only in Goa. The real spicing-up came when Komal

Shah presented a Kathak-based Sufi dance she choreographed to a contemporary Indian composition. She was later joined by Ruchi Shah and Akanksha Mishra to perform as Bollywood fusion that drew from the dynamic traditions of various Indian and Western dance styles. The Air India presentation was inducing in that it showed how only one international airline can boast of a direct flight to Goa via Delhi. It announced several return tickets to Goa for a well-conducted raffle. Mafat Patel of Air Tours, who all the time bags the top achiever Air India Award, proved that it was not only pluck but also his luck that made him a winner. He was presented with the round trip ticket to Goa. Attendees received a bag from the GTDC containing its tourism video and other Goan trinkets.

Gandhian philosophy still relevant: Mayor Emanuel BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- The celebration of Gandhi Legacy, a program jointly organized by the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, in conjunction with Loyola University Chicago last week at Loyola University Chicago-Corboy Law Center in Downtown Chicago was a huge success, judging by the impact it created on the morale of the community by reiterating the values for which Gandhiji lived and died. Though not in the foreground, the genius and touch of community stalwart and activist Niranjan Shah was in evidence. Shah was unanimously elected as Trustee last summer by the University Trustee Board. The two-hour program, as succinctly put by Smita Shah, chair of the Delhi Committee of the Sister Cities International, was to promote an exchange of ideas as exemplified by Gandhiji’s work that was influenced greatly by Henry David Thoreau (especially his essay on civil disobedience) and which in its turn influenced, yet another American Hero Martin Luther King, in his crusade for social equality and justice. The program sought one more time to underline the relevance and importance of Gandhian philosophy of Ahimsa (nonviolence) and Satyagraha (insistence for truth) in solving major problems facing the violence-plagued world today. Its importance got further highlighted with the presence of Chicago Mayor Rham Emanuel and a cross section of Indian American community leaders and Chicago elites. The culmination of the event could not have been better tuned than with the presentation of a Mahatma Gandhi photograph (a morning walk with Ashramites) by Niranjan Shah to Mayor

25

(L-R) Mayor Rham Emanuel, Niranjan Shah & Father John Costello

Rham Emanuel after a few select clips from Gandhi movie that overwhelmed everybody present with emotions. The background music--a soft low key playing of popular Gandhi bhajan Raghupati Raghav--added a special touch and flavor that made many feel the invisible presence of this great world leader about whom Albert Einstein said it was difficult to believe “a man as this one in flesh and blood ever walked on this world.” The Mayor too with his emotions flowing decided to carry the picture himself rather than by aides. The picture incidentally was developed from the original negative done by Mary Burke, a famous photographer who interviewed Gandhi, many times. The value of the exchange of ideas is exemplified by Gandhiji’s work, which was greatly influenced by Henry David Thoreau, particularly his essay on civil disobedience. Gandhiji in turn inspired Martin Luther King, champion of civil liberty in his country.

Echoing the same sentiment, Mayor Rham Emmanuel said “I too went to India with special feelings of a pilgrim. Smita Shah, who welcomed and introduced the Mayor, said that the Mayor recognized that the values of safety, economic equality, and education were important not only to the Indian community, but were universal to all communities. Gandhiji knew that education was required to free his people. The Mayor has echoed that through his commitment to education, by striving to make sure each and every child of Chicago receives an education, by strengthening the communities and neighborhoods, the city of Chicago has become a strong global city, she observed. Responding, Mayor Rham, in his brief remark, said that “I recognize Martin Luther King’s sentiment that you go to other places as a tourist, but to India as a pilgrim. I went there with my family in a private trip, and the experience was amazing for me, my wife, and my children.”

New York Life to hike dividend pay-out by 11 pc BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK -- New York Life, America’s largest mutual life insurer, has announced that its dividend payout will increase next year by 11 per cent, for a total payout of $1.6 billion. Of this, individual life policyholders will receive $1.56 billion in dividends in 2015 – a new record high for the company and a 12 per cent increase over the 2014 level. The company said it would be the third consecutive year of significant dividend increases by New York Life, for an increase of 31 per cent over the $1.19 billion paid to individual life policyholders in 2012. Ted Mathas, chairman and CEO, said, “Our diversified business strategy is a key reason we’ve been able to increase our dividend for three years running. And it is a very real and sustainable competitive advantage for our policyholders.” Mathas said that in addition to the strong dividend payout reflecting the growth of the participating life business and the contribution from the investment management business, the company also continued to experience very good persistency as policyholders maintain their policies in force despite the challenging economy. Of the 825 life insurers in the United States today, only two–including New York Life– have the highest ratings for financial strength currently awarded to any life insurer by the four major rating agencies. Every year since 1854 New York Life has paid a dividend to policyholders, a validation of the company’s mutual structure

7 face 20-year jail for debt collection scam BY A STAFF WRITER

A and singular focus on creating value for its customers. 2015 will mark the 161st consecutive year that New York Life has paid a dividend, through the Civil War, world wars, pandemics and financial crises. New York Life Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 company founded in 1845, is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States and one of the largest life insurers in the world. New York Life has the highest possible financial strength ratings currently awarded to any life insurer from all four of the major credit rating agencies: A.M. Best (A++), Fitch (AAA), Moody’s Investors Service (Aaa), Standard & Poor’s (AA+). Headquartered in New York City, New York Life’s family of companies offers life insurance, retirement income, investments and long-term care insurance. New York Life Investments provides institutional asset management and retirement plan services. Other New York Life affiliates provide an array of securities products and services, as well as retail mutual funds.

TLANTA (GA) -- Seven metro Atlanta area residents are facing federal charges in connection with a multimillion dollar debt collection scam for which they could be jailed for 20 years. Federal authorities in New York say they’ve brought criminal charges against seven people in a debt collection scam run out of Georgia. Prosecutors said that an Atlantabased company bullied people in all 50 states from 2009 through last April. While some of the debts were legitimate, the US Attorney’s Office in New York said many others were not. The alleged scammers operated Williams, Scott & Associates, better known to debtors as Warrant Services Association or WSA, in Norcross. Federal investigators have the audio of a recorded phone call in which WSA workers are heard threatening a woman eight months pregnant. “Ma’am you’re on the way to jail,” said the worker. “I’m not saying that I don’t want to take care of it,” responded the woman. “Oh, you think I’m a eight months pregnant woman that wants to go to jail? Like no, that’s not what I wanna do.” The conversation continues with the WSA worker saying, “I wouldn’t care if you were nine months pregnant. I have

a job to do here.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in Atlanta filed an injunction to shut down WSA in May. “People are taken by surprise when they get a call and it sounds legitimate,” said FTC attorney Robin Rock. “The reason it sounds legitimate is these collectors will have some pieces of personal information. It might be your date of birth. It could be a social security number.” Rock said the FTC was seeking a permanent injunction to stop the company from reopening while criminal charges are pending. The FTC said legitimate debt collectors will never threaten anyone or send police to arrest them. “I think it’s very troubling because we have seen aggressive, bullying type of debt collection increase, seems exponentially,” said Rock. The suspects face wire fraud charges and face up to 20 years in prison.

Why America is losing out on female athletes

How to look gorgeous in winter

WASHINGTON: Pervasive, subtle gender biases and stereotyping by media is hampering the performance of American female athletes, a study contends. The little media exposure that female athletes in the US get often focuses more on their attire, or how attractive they are than on their actual athletic prowess, the study added. “Subtle biases that place cumulative stress on female athletes influence how they think about themselves and their abilities,” said Emily Kaskan and Ivy Ho of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell in the US. Reviewing popular Internet articles, the researchers found that the media often portray female athletes as inferior to their male counterparts and are dismissive of their true abilities. The little coverage received often sexually objectifies female athletes by placing the spotlight on their looks. Prolonged psychological stress can trigger changes in their hormonal, immune and cardiovascular systems, and make athletes vulnerable to heart disease and hypertension.

As winter is round the corner, get the best look for youself. Here are some vital tips from the experts IANS, LONDON

Exercise and fasting could boost brain’s functions WASHINGTON: Exercise along with occasional fasting is good for boosting the brain’s neurons, shows a new research. The research on animals showed how intermittent fasting in rats and mice can enhance learning and memory and decrease the risk of degeneration of those brain functions. “We have evidence that exercise and probably

intermittent fasting increase the number of mitochondria in neurons,” said Mark Mattson, neuroscientist at the National Institute on Aging in the US. The stress of fasting and exercise helps the brain adapt and improve the energy flow of neurons. In fact, fasting and exercise seem to increase the production of a protein called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that boosts cell growth. The study was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Hand dryers spread more germs LONDON: Modern hand dryers are worse than paper towels when it comes to spreading germs, according to new University of Leeds research. Both jet and warm air hand dryers spread bacteria into the air and onto

users and those nearby. Airborne germ counts were 27 times higher around jet air dryers compared to the air around paper towel dispensers, said the scientists. “Next time you dry your hands in a public toilet using an electric hand dryer, you may be spreading bacteria without knowing it. You may also be splattered with ‘bugs’ from other people’s hands,” said Mark Wilcox, professor at the University of Leeds. For the study, the team contaminated hands with a harmless type of bacteria called Lactobacillus.

How to have healthier grocery shopping IANS, LONDON

T

he grocery store can be a tricky place and even the most knowledgeable shoppers can end up putting mistakes in their cart. But with a few tricks up your sleeve, it’s not all that tough to make smart decisions at the store. A group of nutrition experts shared tips for making healthy grocery shopping a success, reports huffingtonpost.com.

Here are their suggestions: v Make a list: Know your grocery store and go with a list of healthy foods in the order they are laid out. That will help you resist temptation, and it speeds up shopping because you’re not wasting time cruising the aisles for what you need. v Don’t go hungry: Healthy eating choices start with the groceries you have on hand. Grocery shop with a plan and shop-

ping list. Do not attempt to grocery shop when you are hungry, as you will be surprised at the significant number of impulse buys in your cart. v Stock up on canned foods: Many shoppers overlook the canned foods aisle because they don’t realize that canned fruits and vegetables can be just as nutritious as fresh and frozen. Plus,

canned foods are always available. v Go plain: The original versions of foods and beverages like cereals, soy milk, yogurt, pasta sauces and more, are usually the most nutritious. That’s because as brands extend product lines, they move into more decadent offerings that cost more and have worse nutritional profiles.
