The WGA West leaders said that “the vile display of naked prejudice reached another low” as part of a letter sent to the 10,000 members of the Los Angeles-based guild, reports variety.com. The letter, which said “First Amendment Under Attack” in the subject line, was signed by WGA West president David A. Goodman, vice president Marjorie David, secretary-treasurer Aaron Mendelsohn, and executive director David Young. “As the officers and executive director of a union devoted to the well-being of writers, we have watched, appalled, as our current administration tramples on every principle of justice and truth we hold dear,” the letter began. “The question for us, always, is when to speak out. What is the ‘right time’ when lies are paraded as truth; when racists are praised for their decency; when the press is derided as ‘fake’; when a child molester is endorsed to smooth the way for an unfair tax cut? If we made a statement each time, we’d be writing to you every day.”
‘Trump mistaken about being PoY’ WASHINGTON: TIME Magazine said that US President Donald Trump is mistaken about how it chooses its Person of the Year, after he said that he turned down the honor when the publication told him he would probably be its pick. “Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named ‘Man (Person) of the Year,’ like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!” Trump tweeted, Efe news agency reported. The magazine answered the president a few hours later, also on Twitter: “The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6 Trump was named Person of the Year by TIME in December 2016. —IANS
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has publicly rebuked British Prime Minister Theresa May after she criticized his sharing of farright videos. “Theresa @theresamay, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom,” Trump tweeted. “We are doing just fine!” Trump’s message came in response to criticism from May’s spokesman over his re-tweeting of incendiary videos posted by the
US President Donald Trump.
The WGA West leaders last blasted Trump by issuing a stinging condemnation of the President for failing to sufficiently condemn white nationalism and neo-Nazis following Trump blaming “both sides” for the violence at a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, where a woman was killed when a car drove into the crowd and 30 people were injured. “President Trump legitimizes hate speech and violence, and disgraces our nation” the guild leaders
said at the time. Trump this week retweeted three inflammatory videos from a British far-right group rife with anti-Muslim content. The videos posted by Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of Britain First, a far-right and ultranationalist political group, depict purported Muslims assaulting people. One purported to show a group of Muslims pushing a boy off a roof. Another claimed to show a
Muslim destroying a statue of the Virgin Mary and another claimed to show immigrants hitting a Dutch boy on crutches. The videos were tweeted by Fransen on November 28 afternoon and Wednesday morning before being picked up by Trump. Fransen reacted jubilantly online, touting that the videos had been shared with Trump’s nearly 44 million followers. “GOD BLESS YOU TRUMP!” she wrote in all caps. She was found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment in November 2016 after abusing a Muslim woman wearing a hijab while she was with her four chil-
deputy leader of a British far-right group, reports the Guardian. However, the “@theresamay” Twitter handle that Trump targeted does not belong to the Prime Minister, but a woman called Theresa Scrivener. Minutes later Trump deleted and reposted the tweet, this time with the correct handle: @Theresa_May. Earlier, Trump highlighted videos from the feed of Jaydan Fransen of Britain First that purported to show a group of Muslims pushing a boy off a roof.
dren. Fransen was fined by the court and ordered to pay costs. In a separate development, Fransen was also charged over using “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior” during a speech she made in Belfast in Northern Ireland. She is set to appear at the Belfast Magistrates Court on December 14. The retweets were immediately met with outrage in Britain. The Muslim Council of Britain slammed Trump, saying the retweets were “the clearest endorsement yet from the US President of the far-right and their vile antiMuslim propaganda”, CNN reported.
Additional sanctions on North Korea? IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has said “additional major sanctions” will be imposed on North Korea, after Pyongyang this week carried out an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test. The US President said on Twitter on Wednesday that he had spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping about “the provocative actions of North Korea. Additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today. This situation will be handled!” Trump offered no further details, Efe news reported. The announcement comes a few hours before an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to analyse the situation, a session requested by the US, South Korea and Japan. However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson suggested shortly after that the sanctions could be unilat-

erally imposed by the US. Tillerson said that the US has “a long list of additional potential sanctions, some of which involve potential financial institutions,
and the Treasury Department will be announcing those when they’re ready to roll those out.” The White House said in a statement about Trump’s phone con-
versation with Xi that the US leader made clear “the determination of the United States to defend ourselves and our allies... (and) emphasized the need for China to use all available levers to convince North Korea to end its provocations and return to the path of denuclearization.” On early November 29, Pyongyang test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile that travelled around 1,000 km before plunging into the Sea of Japan. The North Korean regime said that its new ICBM — the Hwasong-15 — was successfully tested and that it is capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead and reaching any target within the continental US. Before speaking with Xi, Trump spoke on phone with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jaein to discuss Pyongyang’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile test.

IVANKA CHARMS INDIA Prime Minister Narendra Modi hard sells India and invites investors from across the globe to come and invest in the country BY MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD
A
three-day international summit of entrepreneurs started here with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hard selling India and inviting investors from across the globe to invest in India, taking advantage of a friendly climate while President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka said much remains to be done with regard to equitable laws for women in many developing as well as developed countries. “To my entrepreneur friends from across the globe, I would like to say: Come, Make in India, Invest in India - for India, and for the world. I invite each one of you to become a partner in India’s growth story. And once again assure you of our whole-hearted support,” Modi said. He told young entrepreneurs from India that each of them has something valuable to contribute towards creating a New India by 2022. “You are vehicles of change and instruments of India’s transformation.” Listing various steps taken by his government in the last over three

years in improving the business climate, Modi said the jump in India’s ranking in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing business Report from 142 to 100 in three years was a result of this. Speaking before the prime minister, Ivanka, who is also the US President’s Adviser, said: “When it comes to equitable laws, while many developed and developing countries have made tremendous strides, there is still much work to be done.” She said in some countries, women are not allowed to own property, travel freely, or work without the consent of their husbands. In some other countries, the cultural and family pressure is so great that women do not feel the freedom to work outside the home. “Our administration is striving to promote greater opportunity for women around the world, both through our domestic reforms and our international initiatives,” she said. She also said that when women work, it creates a “multiplier effect”, and leads to more reinvestment in families and society. She also lauded Modi for his belief that progress of humanity is incomplete without the empowerment of women.
Summit draws 1,500 delegates HYDERABAD: About 1,500 delegates from 150 countries and territories took part in the three-day Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) here. Ivanka Trump, adviser to and daughter of US President Donald Trump, headed the US delegation to the event, co-hosted by the US and India at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) in Hitec City. Selected start-ups displayed their products at the lobby at the venue while digital displays spoke about India’s potential in various sectors. A hoarding with Ivanka Trump’s picture and slogan of “When women succeed, we all succeed” was put on the approach road to the venue. A few shops and hotels on the approach road to the event venue were shut by police and traffic to the neighborhood was diverted. This is the eighth GES which brings together entrepreneurs, investors and eco-system supporters for mentoring, networking and investment matchmaking. It is the first time the event was organized in South Asia. The US State Department and other US agencies in partnership with NITI Aayog, India’s think tank, organized GES. The delegates included about 400 each from India and the US and the remaining from the rest of the world. —IANS
Ivanka calls for ensuring capital access for women IANS, HYDERABAD
U
S President Donald Trump’s daughter and his advisor Ivanka Trump this week called for closing the gender gap in workforce by providing women better access to capital and ensuring better representation in high-value industries. She underlined the need for more progressive policies to address the stagnation which set in a decade ago in closing the gender gap. She also noted that women dominate those sectors of the economy which are undervalued financially. Ivanka Trump was speaking at a session on the second day of Global Entrepreneurship Summit A(GES) here. The session on ‘We can do it! Innovations in workforce development ad skills training’ had Cherie Blair, Founder, Cherie Blair Foundation for Women; Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank and Karen
Quintos, Chief Customer Officer, Dell EMC as other panelists. Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology, Industries and Commerce K.T. Rama Rao was the moderator. The speakers were unanimous that women need to be empowered through education, skill
(STEM). Another initiative encourages successful entrepreneurs to mentor young men and women. Describing technology as a greater driver of entrepreneurship, she said it was reducing barriers to start business and creating flexibility. “Technology offers tremendous

She also stressed the need for giving options to women and the support required in terms of policies and eco-system. Chanda Kochhar was of the opinion that women should have confidence in their capabilities.

She said women do not need special policies but only required to be given an opportunity to prove themselves. She explained how ICICI Bank is helping the women workers, especially young mothers and those who need to take care of
their elderly parents by allowing them to work from home. Referring to the strides India is making in women empowerment, she said there is no other country in the world where 40 per cent of banking sector is headed by women.

Picture Perfect at Golconda Fort Ivanka went around the sprawling fort as the local officials briefed her about its history BY MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

vanka Trump, daughter and advisor of US President Donald Trump, visited historic Golconda Fort here. Accompanied by US Ambassador to India Ken Juster, India’s Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna and other officials, she went around the sprawling fort as the local officials briefed her about its history, the significance of different parts and also its unique acoustic system. The fort was the capital of the
Qutub Shahi kingdom from 1518 to 1687. On the second and last day of her visit to this city to attend Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), Ivanka visited the fort located about nine miles from the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), the venue of the summit. After attending a session in the morning on the second day, Ivanka went back to Trident Hotel, where she was staying. US security agencies and the local police had made security arrangements. The fort was closed
for tourists and police imposed restrictions on traffic in the surroundings. She was earlier expected to visit the Charminar, symbol of Hyderabad located in the old city. The plans, however, were dropped on security grounds, police sources said. Since all the security arrangements were already in place at the fort for the dinner, the security agencies cleared the proposal for a sightseeing tour of the fort. Meanwhile, the US Ambassador tweeted about Ivanka's visit to the fort. He also posted few pictures.

Telangana and Nizami cuisine. Aghaz (soup), Mezban (appetizers), Waqfa (sorbet), Mashgool Dastarkhwan (main course) and Zauq-e-shahi (dessert) were the courses served. Ivanka Trump's welcome ritual began with a traditional 'aarti' and lighting of the lamp ceremony. All dignitaries to the glittering event
were also welcomed with local 'mogras' and rose flowers. Butlers dressed in traditional sherwanis and vibrant headgear represented India's ceremonial customs. BJP questions Rahul’s faith
The controversy over Rahul Gandhi’s faith arose after the Congress Vice President’s media coordinator Manoj Tyagi signed the Somnath temple’s register meant for non-Hindus IANS, AHMEDABAD
A
major controversy broke out on Wednesday over Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Somnath temple with the BJP questioning his faith, while the Congress hit back accusing the BJP of playing dirty politics and maintained he was a “devout Hindu”. The controversy arose over Rahul Gandhi’s media coordinator Manoj Tyagi signing the register meant for non-Hindus, which the Congress claimed was manipulated later by adding the names of Rahul Gandhi and Ahmed Patel. Moments after his visit, the social media was abuzz with pictures of a register showing the signature of Manoj Tyagi, with names of Gandhi and Patel on the left side. The BJP went to town with the story that Rahul Gandhi has

5 militants killed in Kashmir gunfights SRINAGAR: Five militants were killed and a para commando of the Indian Army injured on Thursday in two separate gunfights in Kashmir Valley. Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that four terrorists were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Futlipora. In another gunfight that erupted in north Kashmir Sagipora village of Sopore area in Baramulla, police said one militant has been killed so far while a para commando of the army was injured. “The operation against militants in Sagipora village is still on,” police said. declared himself to be a non-Hindu. “The Congress has always tried to project Rahul Gandhi as a Hindu. But the fact is that he is not. Rahul has visited over 20 temples of multi-
ple Hindu deities since October. The Congress has been lying. The entry shows that he is not an Hindu,” said Raju Dhruv, BJP spokesperson in Saurashtra region.
Manoj Tyagi issued a statement that he had just signed the register in order to take media personnel inside the temple and not entered Rahul Gandhi or Ahmed Patel’s names. “These would have been added later,” he said in the statement. Somnath temple, located on the shores of the Arabian sea on the southern most part of Gujarat, is revered by Hindus and enshrines the first of 12 ‘jyotirlings’ of Lord Shiva. Through a notice in June 2015 the Shree Somnath Trust (SST) — the institution managing the temple — had made it mandatory for non-Hindus to seek permission of the Trust before entering the main temple. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel is incumbent chairman of the Trust, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National president Amit Shah and retired
Chief Secretary of Gujarat, P.K. Laheri, are its trustees. The Congress called a press conference at short notice. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the BJP was scared of the outcome of the Gujarat Assembly elections and was thus resorting to cheap politics. “There is only one visitor’s book at Somnath Temple that was signed by Congress VP Rahul Gandhi. Any other image being circulated is fabricated,” said Surjewala, adding “Desperate times call for desperate measures” — referring to the BJP. “When the visitor’s book was given to him by the temple committee, Rahul Gandhi wrote a message on it with his name (Rahul Gandhi) and address (12, Tughlak Lane, New Delhi). “A very inspiring place” was the message he wrote in the book,” he added.
Single rate GST is not possible in India: Jaitley IANS, NEW DELHI
A
sserting that a single rate Goods and Services Tax (GST) is not possible in the country, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Thursday it is only applicable in a nation where the purchasing power of the people is uniform. “It is possible only in an economy where there is similarly placed population to have a single rate to start off with. In a highly differentiated society like India, it is not possible. Therefore we started with differential rates,” Jaitley said here at the HT Leadership Summit. “We had an atrocious tax system pre-July 1. These brackets would

not have been possible if everyone were not on the same page. Let me make it clear, though, a single rate
GST is not possible in India. We cannot have a tax system which has the same rate for a Hawai chappal
and Mercedes car,” Jaitley asserted. The finance minister said the country will need a “boom period” like during 2003 to 2008 in order to achieve 10 percent growth, which is a “challenging figure”. “A 10 percent growth is a very challenging figure and a 10 percent growth will not depend merely on domestic factors. It will also depend on how the world is moving,” said Jaitley. “I’m realistic that to reach a double-digit growth we need to have a boom period that we had between 2003 and 2008. If the world is only on recovery mode, as the world today is, for an economy to generate that kind of demand on its own is going to be extremely difficult,” he said.
AAP dubs Rs 300 mn income tax notice ‘bogus’ IANS, NEW DELHI
A
Rs 300.67 million Income Tax department notice to the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday triggered a political row with Delhi’s ruling party terming the move as “bogus” and “political vendetta” by the agencies of the Modi government. The Congress and BJP, however, asked the AAP to come clear on the issue and alleged that the party had failed to live up to its self-pro-
claimed standards of transparency and probity. Slamming the notice, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the action of the IT department was the “height of political vendetta”. “In the history of India, all donations to a political party have been declared illegal. All these were accounted for and shown in books of accounts. This is the height of political vendetta,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal (Photo: IANS)
AAP also held a press conference and said it had maintained a record of every donation. “The IT Department has declared the complete amount of donations we received as illegal
and has put it under the category of taxable income although we have maintained the records of each paisa that we received from donors,” AAP treasurer Deepak Bajpai said.

‘Democrats back Trump for stronger India ties’ It is good that Trump is continuing the strengthening of the US-India relationship,” says Krishnamoorthi ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
A
lthough there is an ideological chasm between US President Donald Trump and the Democratic Party, India-US relation “transcends partisanship” and the party supports his initiatives to strengthen it further, according to Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. “The more he can do that the better because it will help each of our economies and will enhance our security and also bring our two peoples together even closer between the world’s oldest and largest democracies,” the Democratic Party member of the House of Representatives said in interview with IANS. Trump has said that a “critical part of the South Asia strategy for America is to further develop its strategic partnership with India.” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson expanded on it saying last month the administration wanted to “deepen ties with India” to make it one of the anchors of a democratic world order. “It is good that the President is continuing the strengthening of the US-India relationship,” Krishnamoorthi said. “I am glad that the relationship is now something that both parties support.” But he said that it should not be a transactional relationship but be built on a foundation that endures. “What I am always concerned
Vandana Jhingan is herself being challenged by another Indian American.

about is any kind of relation, any kind of interaction that is transactional in nature,” he said. “We need to make it about relationship growing.” For this, “it is very, very important that for instance that we enhance our economic relationship, that we continue to promote Indian investment in the US,” he said, “just as the Indians will promote American investment in India”. Krishnamoorthi made a pitch for investments in his Illinois constituency located in suburbs around Chicago, saying he hopes
Indian businesses would come there. The Indian auto manufacturer, Mahindra Group, has set up a factory and technical centre with a $230 million investment in neighboring Michighan state across the lake from Illinois. On the security front, Washington and New Delhi “have to be close partners in fighting terrorism, but also in making sure that we can bring some democratic norms and, kind of making sure everyone observes the rules of the road in our global relationships, the way we conduct our global business”, Krishnamoorthi said.
NEW YORK: A candidate backed by the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) has announced she wants to challenge Indian American Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi when he is up for re-election in 2018. But Vandana Jhingan is herself being challenged by another Indian American, Jitendra Diganvker, for the Republican Party’s ticket in the House of Representatives constituency in Chicago suburbs. In the election system of Illinois state, candidates will first have to win a primary election in which party members elect their party’s candidate to run in the general election. Therefore, Jhingan or Diganvker will have to win the Republican primary to be held in March 2018 to run against Krishnamoorthi in the November election. The terms of representatives is only two years in the US, requiring Krishnamoorthi, who was elected for the first time in November 2016
to run for reelection in 2018. Krishnamoorthi is one of four Indian-Americans in the House of Representatives, all of them Democrats. Kamala Harris, the sole Senator of Indian descent, is also a Democrat. Krishnamoorthi filed his papers on Monday for the Democratic Party primary. Jhingan announced her intentions to run in the Republican primary over the weekend and Diganvker earlier in November. All of them may face other candidates in their respective party’s primaries. In the constituency known as Illinois District eight whites make up 70 per cent of the population and only 12 per cent is Asian, a category that includes Indians. Krishnamoorthi is the first nonwhite person to be elected from there. Jhingan’s announcement said that her candidacy is supported by the RHC. —IANS

US warns N. Korea of ‘destruction’ US called on China to show leadership and cut off oil supplies to N. Korea to pressure Pyongyang
Russian envoy calls for restraint
ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
W
arning that if it comes to war, North Korea will be “totally destroyed”, the US has called on China to show leadership and cut off oil supplies to pressure Pyongyang following its latest missile test. US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley told the Council on Wednesday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was bringing “the world closer to war” through his missile and nuclear provocations. “We have never sought war with North Korea,” she said. “And if war comes, make no mistake, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed.” Haley said that many countries have made economic sacrifices to enforce strict sanctions against North Korea and put the main task of containing Pyongyang on China’s shoulders.

Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle LONDON: A royal announcement on Monday confirmed Britain’s Prince Harry’s will marry his American actress girlfriend Meghan Markle next year. The announcement by Clarence House said the prince, fifth in line to the throne, will marry Markle next spring and will live at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London, reports the BBC. The couple, who have been dating since July 2016, got engaged in November. In a statement, Prince Harry said he was “delighted to announce” the engagement and had received the blessing of Markle’s parents.
Bosnian war criminal’s suicide to be probed THE HAGUE: Dutch authorities on Thursday launched a probe into the suicide of a Bosnian Croat war criminal who died after drinking a vial of poison while standing in the dock at a UN tribunal here, where his war crimes sentence of 20 years was upheld. After the judges had delivered their decision at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Wednesday, Slobodan Praljak screamed: “Praljak is not a criminal. I reject your verdict,” the Guardian reported. The 72-year-old then raised a small brown bottle to his lips, and drank it in full view of the cameras filming the hearing.

“We now turn to (China’s) President Xi (Jinping) to also take that stand,” she said. “China must show leadership and follow through.” Haley said that President Donald Trump had called Xi and asked him to cut off oil supplies to North Korea. “China can do this on its
own or we can take the oil situation into our own hands,” she added. Explaining the importance of an oil embargo, she said that when China cut off oil supplies that country in 2003, Pyongyang came to the negotiating table. Meanwhile, Trump’s Principal
UNITED NATIONS: The Russian envoy to the UN has called for restraint over the Korean Peninsula crisis following Pyongyang’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) which can allegedly reach the entire American mainland. “It is essential to take a step back and carefully weigh the consequences of each move, to revise the policy of mutual threat and intimidation because this policy only leads to consequences or goal that are opposite to those that are sought after,” Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council on Wednesday. Nebenzia said that a comprehensive settlement will be difficult if Pyongyang feels that its security was threatened.
Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah told reporters: “We’ll see future actions by the US and others and we’re looking forward to applying as much pressure as we can to get to our ultimate goal, which is a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.” At the Council meeting convened at the request of the US, Japan and South Korea, Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman said the missile launched on Wednesday had travelled about 950 kilometers before falling into the sea in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. On Thursday, North Korea published photographs of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that was launched on Wednesday. A large gallery of 42 photos published by the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, unveiled the ICBM Hwasong-15 that has a rounded tip sitting on a transporter erector launcher (TEL) that has nine wheels on each side.

Three get death penalty in Maharashtra’s ‘Nirbhaya’ case The verdict was pronounced under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act before a packed courtroom IANS, AHMEDNAGAR (MAHARASHTRA)
A
Special Court this week awarded death sentence to three men convicted in the rape and brutal murder of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Kopardi village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district in 2016. Jitendra alias Pappu Babulal Shinde, 26, Santosh Gorkha Bhawal, 30, and Nitin Gopinath Bhailume, 28, were given the death penalty for rape, conspiracy, murder and other crimes, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the media after the verdict. Ahmednagar District and Sessions Judge Suvarna Keole had on November 18 found them guilty. She pronounced the verdict under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act before a packed courtroom. The judge has allowed the convicts to appeal before the Bombay High Court against the death sentence, demanded forcefully by the prosecution last week. “We shall challenge not only the verdict but the entire proceedings before the High Court, the lapses and other issues on which we have already given our written submission to the Sessions Court,” the lawyers for Bhawal, Balasaheb Khopade and Vijayalaxmi
SC declines plea in Jaya’s daughter case NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court this week declined to entertain a plea by a woman who claimed to be the biological daughter of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, to exhume the AIADMK leader’s body for a DNA test to establish the petitioner’s parentage. Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta, however, permitted her to move the Madras High Court with her prayer. Petitioner Amrutha said her foster parents — the younger sister and brother-in-law of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister — adopted her in 1982. She claimed she was the biological daughter of Jayalalithaa and this was conveyed to her by her foster father Sarathy before he died in March. She urged the court to order the exhumation of the body of her “mother” so that the family could perform her funeral in a traditional manner. —IANS

Khopade, told IANS. The crime took place on July 13, 2016 when the 15-year-old was abducted, raped, mutilated and killed, sparking off a casteist and political furore in Maharashtra. That evening, the Class 9 student had gone out to fetch some spices from her grandmother’s home in the same village. “Justice has finally been done. My daughter will never return. This is the real tribute to my daughter. We are grateful to (Ujjwal) Nikam
Saheb,” the victim’s mother said before breaking down inconsolably outside the courtroom. Nikam said: “The prime accused Shinde has been convicted and fined for committing the offenses of molestation, rape and brutal murder while the other two, Bhawal and Bhailume, provoked him (Shinde), encouraged, conspired and abetted in the crimes.” Special Judge Keole slapped Shinde with three years jail for outraging the modesty of the victim, a
life sentence for conspiracy and rape, and death for the murder. Bhawal and Bhailume were awarded three years for conspiracy in outraging of modesty, life sentence for conspiracy of rape and death sentence for conspiracy to murder. The three were also fined Rs 20,000 each or three months additional jail for failure to pay up, while Bhawal has been slapped another fine of Rs 18,000 for attempting to delay court proceedings for which his mobile and motorbike would be auctioned and the proceeds deposited in the court. All jail sentences would run concurrently. The verdict was hailed across the Maharashtra political spectrum. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the trial was conducted in a record time and it would serve as a warning to all rapists. Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (Congress) said: “Justice at last.” State Congress President Ashok Chavan said the trial could be conducted so fast because of the changes in the law effected by the UPA government after the heinous ‘Nirbhaya’ gang rape case of 2012. Leader of Opposition in Council (NCP) Dhananjay Munde urged that now it will be “the responsibility of the state government” to ensure that the verdict is upheld in the High Court”.

The CCI further said that the restriction was pursued to enhance the commercial interest of the bidders of IPL broadcasting rights and the consideration in turn received by BCCI. “BCCI shall not place blanket restriction on organization of professional domestic cricket league or events by non-members. BCCI take on Chaudhry’s ‘threat’ to CFO sought IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Supreme Court has sought response from the BCCI and its treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry on allegations that he had threatened the cricket board’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Santosh Rangnekar on three occasions, including with threat of “liquidation” on one occasion. Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice
D.Y. Chandrachud sought the response after amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium produced an e-mail by the CFO to Vinod Rai — head of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) managing the cricket affairs — on the SC’s directions. Rai is former Comptroller and Auditor General of India. Subramanium said Chaudhry had told Rangnekar that had he been in Haryana, he would have been “liquidated” by now.
FIFA reveals secrets of World Cup draw to avoid foul play MOSCOW: Global football governing body FIFA has revealed plans for the Russia 2018 World Cup draw, to be held on Friday at the Kremlin. Russian journalist Maria Komandnaya will present the event with the help of Uruguayan football legend Diego Forlan, reports Efe. Forlan stated that the expectations of the draw are very high as “Everybody wants to know — the fans, the people want to know, where to book hotels and plane tickets.” Yet, Forlan denied that the draw is decisive as to who will advance in the tournament. Nonetheless, it was the Uruguayans and Costa Ricans who surprisingly qualified for the round of 16. FIFA has already distributed the 32 teams between four levels, each level including eight teams. During the Friday draw, eight teams
per level will be divided down into smaller four team groups. After the draw, there will then be a total of eight groups, with four teams per group. Since Russia is the host country, it is the only team to already know its place in the draw; the first team of Group A. FIFA decided that no group can have more than one team per confederation, with the exception being Europe, since there are 14 European teams qualified. However, there will be only one or two European teams in each group.

BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry had threatened CFO Santosh Rangnekar thrice.
Telling the three-judge bench that he has received a letter from the lawyer representing the CoA, Subramanium said, “It is shocking,
no person has any authority in the world to administer threats to liquidate the CFO. The treasurer has allegedly done so.”

The 31-year-old, who bagged eight wickets in the Test, achieved this feat in 54 matches, surpassing the record of Australia’s Denis Lillee,
who achieved the milestone in 56 Tests. Ashwin also became the fifth Indian to claim 300 wickets. Spending ‘me time’ may reduce depression, anxiety KUALA LUMPUR: People who spend some time only with themselves may easily reduce their stress level and lower the risk of depression and anxiety by being creative, said researchers. Some solitude is not bad for healing psychological health, but can rather improve the functioning the brain by fostering creativity, said researchers, reported the Daily Mail. Creativity reduces stress by helping “us reach a flow state”, in which the brain works at optimal efficiency, in order to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates emotional responses that further rewards us for both creating and solving problems in the process, they said. On the other hand, social interaction plays a “central role” in both mental and physical health, but a room full of people is not the most conducive environment to creative activities, the researchers noted. “When people think about the costs associated with social with-

ndia’s Department of Biotechnology has decided to give a big push for research in “tissue engineering” aimed at eventually creating human organs in a dish apparently for overcoming the problems of donor organ shortages. The Department has invited “concept proposals” from Indian scientists for regeneration of heart, liver, pancreas, skin, tooth, eye and bone — complete with muscle, tendon and marrow — in the laboratory. The Department announcement says the above were “candidate” organs for development but scientists may propose for funding any other organ for regeneration “provided there is a clear credible evidence for such a choice”. Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field which evolved from the field of biomaterial development. It refers to the practice of combining scaffolds, cells and bio-
logically active molecules into functional tissues. It has become an established protocol for the bioengineering of living tissues using engineered “scaffolds” that cells can populate and allow for regeneration of tissues that can be fully functional. Elsewhere in the world, bladders, small arteries, skin grafts and cartilage have been implanted in patients, but the procedures are
still experimental and tissue engineering plays only a small role in patient treatment. Tissues of complex organs like heart, lung and liver have been successfully recreated in the lab, but they are a long way from being ready for implant into a patient. Growing the whole organ like a heart to replace the damaged one or regenerate a new kidney from a patient’s own cells would be a leap forward.

fter red wine, beer is believed to be the drink of choice for feeling relaxed. But what makes a perfectly flavored pint? For some it is the hops, others say it is the water, or yeast. But the science of beer has just added a flavor to the mash — barley. The study published in the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists showed that barley varieties do contribute to flavors of beer above and beyond the malting process. And in addition to genetics, environment of the place where barley is grown — what the wine industry calls terroir — also plays a part, according to the study. The discovery follows a five-year study involving researchers at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich,
of barley to observe useful field traits. To test the hypothesis that “terroir” applied to barley flavor, they grew populations across three sites in Oregon in the US. The barley was harvested micromalted and micro-brewed using a customized scientific approach that ensured consistency between batches. Around 150 beers were prepared for sensory testing using a trained panel — people with sensitive palates employed by the brewing industry who know how to differentiate between a flavor wheel of 10 descriptors. The descriptors were — cereal, color, floral, fruit, grass, honey, malt, sweet, toasted and toffee. These qualitative tests on the beers and control beers were used to understand how genes, location, and the malting process influenced flavor.

mployees show more creativity in their work when they find their boss to be humble — leaders who give employees a chance to speak up and have a voice in the decision-making process and who also acknowledge their own limitations, suggests new research. Humble leaders are most effective when team members expect a low degree of distance between the leaders and followers, said lead researcher Jia (Jasmine) Hu, Associate Professor at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business in the US.
Humble leaders promoted higher levels of creativity on their teams.
For the study, published online in the Journal of Applied Psychology, the researchers collected data on work teams and team leaders from 11 information and technology companies in a major city in
northern China at three time points over six months. In all, the final study sample included 354 members from 72 teams. At the beginning of the study, team members rated their leaders’ humility on a six-item scale. Three months later, team members rated how much they shared information with each other. And six months after the start of the study, team leaders rated how creative their teams were. Results showed that humble leaders promoted higher levels of creativity on their teams when team members expected them to be humble.
Pre-school teachings are impactful for young children IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have found that the instructional practices provided by pre-school teachers as a part of the early childhood education impacts the academic career and social skills of young children. “High quality pre-school is one of the most effective means of preparing all children to succeed in school. However, this review of research indicates the need to expand our definitions of quality,” said Margaret Burchinal, senior research scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
High quality pre-school is one of the most effective means of preparing all children to succeed in school.
According to the researcher, the review of the science suggests the field should continue to measure the quality of relationships of pre-
school teachers and children, especially the sensitivity and warmth of the teachers. The review, published in the journal Child Development
Perspectives, helps untangle a complicated knot of factors that affect young children. “The largest effects on child out-
comes involve curricula. Some of the biggest impacts on literacy, math and other skills involved curricula focused on those specific skills with accompanying coaching or training for teachers,” Burchinal explained. The researchers pointed to FPG’s Abecedarian Project as an example of a program that combined intentional teaching with warmth and sensitivity. The project used an intensive, language-driven approach that involved teacher scaffolding of activity-based learning to build children’s knowledge base and language skills. “As we think about the components of high-quality early childhood education, our policies and practices can reflect what this research tells us,” Burchinal said.

The film Padmavati is mired in controversy over conjectures that it “distorts facts” about Rajput queen Padmavati.
irector Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, whose film S Durga was not screened at the 48th IFFI despite his best efforts, says the incident has proved how those in power can go to any extent to destroy something they don’t like. In a Facebook post this week, a day after the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here wrapped up, Sasidharan shared
his sentiments. “I am not unhappy even a bit. On the other hand, I am more than happy that my film has
helped a lot of people who were asking ‘What is the problem if the Sangh come(s) to power?’ to understand what is the problem actually,” he said. “It is simply proved that those in power now can go to any extent to destroy something which they don’t like. “They can even misuse law or ignore judiciary for their purpose. They can give assurances to executives that nothing will happen to them, even if they do not obey courts. A very dangerous message indeed.”

‘Tumhari Sulu’: Strong performances elevate this film
T
he film Tumhari Sulu is the story of Sulochana Dubey aka Sulu (Vidya Balan), a middle class housewife with an indefatigable spirit who is in the constant pursuit of excelling and winning contests and competitions, which give her immense satisfaction. Perhaps subconsciously it stems from the fact that she is Class 12 fail as her banker sisters and father constantly remind her. Sulu as she is fondly called, is always eager to participate in contests and win — whether it is a night lamp or a pressure cooker. Her enthusiasm and confidence
Film: “Tumhari Sulu”; Director: Suresh Triveni; Cast: Vidya Balan, Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia, Malishka Mendonza; Rating: *** keep her going and her middleclass humdrum life does not deter her from giving these a shot. It is on one such occasion that she comes across the announcement for an RJ hunt and sets about pursuing it. How she becomes a popular RJ, on a night show, tastes success and yet, faces flak at home, forms the crux of this tale.
Director Suresh Triveni manages to create the middle class milieu complete with Sulu, her husband
Ashok (Manav Kaul), a Manager in a small-time mill and their 11year-old son, Pranav, to perfection. Whether it is Ashok’s constant bickering with the TV company for having sold him a faulty piece and thus seeking replacement or Sulu’s family giving her advice to leave the RJ job at night, are all palpable instances that the audience can fully relate to. A performance oriented light-hearted film, the treatment in some parts however is a tad amateurish. While the first half establishes Sulu, her spirited personality and her secret longing to prove herself.

BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- A shoplifter who beat to death an Indian American gas station attendant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a baseball bat, has been sentenced to life in prison. A jury in September found 33-year-old Derrick Williams guilty of first-degree homicide in the January death of 34-year-old Harjinder Singh. Milwaukee County District Judge Jeffrey Wagner made Williams eligible to seek supervised release after 33 years in prison. The assailant had been charged with one count of first-degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, and habitual criminality repetition. Court documents indicate that on January 5 morning, Williams came into the BP gas station and mini-mart where Singh worked. He stole something from the shop and then fled on foot. Singh chased him on foot, wielding the baseball bat. At some point, the victim threw the bat at Williams and yelled, “don’t come back,” according to court documents. Singh then started walking back to the store. Williams picked up the bat, and ran after Singh. He admitted during his trial that he struck Singh four times with the bat. An autopsy revealed Singh suffered blunt force injuries to the head. His death was ruled a homicide.

Indian gubernatorial candidate in dock
Shri Thanedar
BY A STAFF WRITER ETROIT, MI -- Avomeen Holdings has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Detroit, Michigan, against Indian American gubernatorial candidate Shri Thanedar. Avomeen claimed Thanedar made fraudulent and misleading claims to inflate the value of a company he sold in 2016 that banked the candidate about $20 million. The parent company of Avomeen Holdings, High Street Capital, purchased a controlling stake in the Avomeen chemical testing business. The complaint alleges the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Democrat and entrepreneur misrepresented his company’s monthly income streams and personally directed employees to smooth over volatile revenue growth in the months leading up to the sale. Thanedar is also accused of instructing bookkeeping staff to back-date invoices so revenue could be recognized in prior months to suggest a more stable income stream. Attorneys allege he violated the federal Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Michigan Uniform Securities Act, the Delaware Securities Act, common law fraud and breach of contract.

community news/midwest serve Thanksgiving Bollywood Sargam’s festival of light Sikhs meals at Salvation Army 4
FRIDAY, 01 DECEMBER, 2017
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Members of the Sikh Religious Society (SRS) of Chicago helped feed the needy on Thanksgiving Day at Salvation Army located at 825 North Christiana Ave in Chicago, Illinois. The traditional Thanksgiving Day hot meal (turkey, mash potatoes, beans, stuffing, bread rolls, apple and pumpkins pie) for over 500 people was prepared at the Salvation Army kitchen and served by some 20 Sikh volunteers. Major Nancy Powers of Salvation Army thanked the Sikhs for their service and contribution, and expressed her desire to bring more friends and family to visit the Sikh Gurdwara Sahib in Palatine. People from all faith communities and all walks of life contribute money and volunteer time and labor for such events at Salvation Army. It gives a whole lot of personal satisfaction to be able to serve these meals to the needy so that they can also be part of these holiday celebrations. The Chicagoland Sikh community has been doing this service at Salvation Army since 1992. Some Chicago Sikh families have been associated with this ‘sewa’(service) since its inception to honor Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith, who started the tradition of ‘langar’ (free food) in the 15th century. It was a team work to serve the meals with great dignity to the guests. Amardev Singh Badesha and Jasvir Singh Sodhi welcomed the guests who came for lunch. Thakar Singh Basati and Iqbal Singh Chopra handed out the pumpkin pies. Thakar Singh Basati and Kuldeep Singh who came to serve at Salvation Army had earlier participated in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day parade on State Street in the morning time coordinated by Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago. PCS has been participating in this parade since 2005. Other community members who came to serve were Siva Singh Khalsa, Shabad Kaur Khalsa and their son Amardev Singh along with Kanwarjeet Kaur Chopra, Lal Singh and Geeta Singh. The Sikh community collected funds and donated to Salvation Army. Many needy families receive food from the Salvation Army food pantry. Salvation Army also provides drug de-addiction services at their new beautiful location, and prepares the homeless clients for regular employment and ultimately home ownership.

FRIDAY, 01 DECEMBER, 2017
BY A STAFF WRITER IVERVIEW, FL -- An Indian American woman residing in Riverview, Florida, who allegedly suffered repeated battery at the hands of her husband and in-laws, was allowed to leave a court-mandated shelter for abused women last month, after supporters from the community rallied on her behalf. Silky Gaind, 33, was allegedly repeatedly beaten by her husband Devbir Kalsi, also 33, who then called in his mother and father from Ludhiana, Jasbir and Bhupinder, to “help control” his wife. Gaind was falsely imprisoned by the Kalsis in her home, according to police, and her baby suffered abuse by the Kalsis. The Kalsis were arrested on September 2, and charged with various offenses. According to the Hillsboro County Sheriff’s Office, Devbir Kalsi was charged with felony battery, false imprisonment, harassing a witness, and child abuse. He was held in custody in $32,000 bail, and ordered to turn in his passport and visa to the Hillsboro County Sheriff’s office. Jasbir Singh Khalsi, 67, was charged with child abuse, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon – a knife – false imprisonment, and harassing a witness. He was held on $27,000

bail. Bhupinder Singh Khalsi, 62, was held on $9,500 bail, and charged with battery domestic violence, and failure to report child abuse. Bhupinder has also allegedly violated immigration laws, though her booking sheet did not give details of the latter charge. Jasbir and Bhupinder were released from custody on September 20. Devbir was released
on October 2. After the arrests, Silky Gaind and her baby were immediately taken to a shelter for battered women. Magaret Petros, executive director of the Los Altos, Calif.-based Mothers Against Murder, said that Gaind was ordered by the county’s Child Protection Investigation service to remain at the shelter or have her child taken from her and moved to foster care.

Project to make battery from green tea leaves BY A STAFF WRITER ITTSBURG, KN -- Researchers at Pittsburg State University in Kansas are trying to turn natural waste into green energy. Ram Gupta, an assistant professor of chemistry, and a team of his students are looking to transform waste such as green tea leaves into batteries. “Our idea is to use eco-friendly materials which aren’t reactive with air,” the Indian American scientist said. “We can work these into an active carbon, which is a main ingredient in batteries. It has a very promising future.” The project aims to develop a suitable highperformance, lightweight and safe replacement for lithium batteries, which are commonly used to power cellphones, computers and some cars. But researchers said the chemistry of lithium batteries makes them more likely to catch fire under certain conditions because they contain a

Sandeep Singh BY A STAFF WRITER ACKSON, MS-A Jackson, Mississippi resident was killed on November 26 night near his home during an armed robbery. Sandeep Singh, 21, was walking home from the convenience store where he worked late evening with two other people. All three men were robbed by a suspect who is described by the police as a black male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. The suspect used a .9mm pistol to kill Singh, according to police reports. Sandeep’s father, Balwinder Singh, told journalists in Jalandhar, India that a relative in the US informed him of his son’s death. Singh said that Sandeep handed the assailant $200 in cash and his iPhone 7. He then ran towards his car, at which point the suspect fired two bullets at him. Balwinder Singh, who lives in New Defense Colony, speculated that the suspect must have thought Sandeep was running to his car to get his gun. He described his son as a hard-working fellow who strove not to impose a financial burden on his family. Sandeep had arrived in the US three years earlier.

Burglar’s arrest leads to treasure trove BY A STAFF WRITER ORONA, CA -- An evidence room inside the Corona Police department is filled with stolen property, and it was all allegedly burgled by one man over the course of three years. “This is amazing,” said Corona Police Detective Andy Bryant. “In my 25-year career, this is the most stolen property we’ve recovered.” The booty included guitars, golf clubs, cameras, expensive watches and several tables covered with bags of jewelries like innumerable bracelets, necklaces and rings. And that’s not all. There are swords, hand guns, ammunition and assault rifles, all of it allegedly stolen by 46-year-old Michael Cohan. The police said their case came together on October 23 when a Corona resident on the 2300 block of Talbot Court caught the suspect on an indoor surveillance system using a crowbar to break into his home to steal jewelry and sports memorabilia. Cohan was armed with a loaded handgun

at the time of his arrest. He is facing a number of charges, including residential burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a concealed firearm and conspiracy.
His bail is set at $1,000,000. Cohan’s girlfriend, identified as 48-year-old Melissa Dillion of Riverside, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property.
Girish Menon BY A STAFF WRITER APLE SHADE, NJ -- An Indian man in New Jersey has been found guilty of a 2016 armed robbery in Maple Shade, N.J. Superior Court Judge Terrence R. Cook last week found 46-year-old Girish Menon, of Mount Holly, N.J., guilty following a bench trial at the Burlington County Courthouse in Mount Holly. Menon was convicted of first-degree robbery and two weapons offenses, and now faces the possibility of 10 to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on January 26. Menon, who is not a US citizen, opted not to have a trial by jury and instead have the judge render a decision. A Wawa gas station attendant testified that he was working the night shift on January 26, 2016, when a dark-colored Lexus pulled up to a pump, and a man held up a gun and demanded money. The man was identified as dark-skinned with a five o’clock shadow and wearing a hat. He did not get any money. Eventually Menon was identified as the suspect and charged the week after the holdup. When he was questioned, Menon indicated that he was the primary driver of the vehicle that matched the victim’s description. The judge in his ruling said that an airsoft gun hidden in the trunk underneath the liner during a vehicle search and the attendant identified Menon from a series of photos. Menon, who had been out of jail on bail, is from India and has lived in the United States for many years. Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Angermeier asked Cook to revoke Menon’s bail, arguing that he is a flight risk. Menon’s attorney Michael Riley countered that his client has forfeited his passport and does not have the ability to leave the country. Cook revoked bail, and Menon was taken into custody pending sentencing.
