‘India-US partnership poised for the next level’

R

ichard Rahul Verma, the first Indian-American to be nominated as the US Ambassador to India, believes there is renewed enthusiasm on both sides to take a reenergized India-US partnership to the next level. “There is no question that this is a defining and exciting time in the US-India relationship,” he told the Senate Foreign Relations committee Tuesday at his confirmation hearing. Verma, 45, a former key aide to then secretary of state Hillary Clinton, noted that President Barack Obama “will make a historic visit to India in January, becoming the first US head of state to attend India’s Republic Day and the only sitting US president to visit India twice.” “His trip will build on Prime Minister Modi’s highly successful visit to the United States this past September,” he said. “There’s little doubt the relationship has been reenergized, with

WASHINGTON: The Republican congressional aide who posted a Facebook message criticizing the behavior of US President Barack Obama’s daughters during a White House ceremony has announced her resignation. Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Republican Representative Stephen Fincher, said her resignation is “in the works”, following the controversy sparked by her comments. In a Facebook post, she said that Sasha and Malia should have shown “a little class” during the annual ceremony before the Thanksgiving Day festivities.

Ashton Carter is likely to replace Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

WASHINGTON: Ashton Carter, former second in command at the Pentagon, credited with enhancing defense ties with India, is said to be President Barack Obama’s choice to replace Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who was ousted last week. Carter, who led an effort to loosen technology-transfer restrictions that had stymied sales of US weapons to India, emerged as the front runner after a number of candidates withdrew from consideration. These included Senator Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, Michèle A. Flournoy, a former Pentagon under secretary and Jeh C. Johnson, the secretary of Homeland Security. here is a world of difference between what India, the world’s largest whisky drinking nation, cheers with and what connoisseurs call the American ‘whiskey’ spelt with an ‘e’, for starters. What Indians drink, particularly the cheaper stuff, is largely made from cane sugar, whereas the top selling American brands like Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam must be produced from grain, one learns on the American whiskey trail. JAMMU/SRINAGAR: People defied a boycott call by separatist groups and turned up in large numbers on December 2 to vote in the second of the five-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. A turnout of 71 percent was recorded in the 18 constituencies that voted Tuesday, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Umang Narula said at a media conference in Jammu. "The overall voter turnout is likely to increase as long queues of voters were still waiting to cast their votes in many places. Polling remained peaceful, and no untoward incident of any significance was reported from anywhere," he said. ilton Chennai’s Culinary Express now offers Goan delights like fish or paneer recheado, Goan curries (fish or prawn), moogachi gathi (green sprouts slow cooked with Goan spices) and others and the response is good, the hotel’s top chef said. “The dishes are made in home style and not in the typical restaurant style. The masala is made ready by chef Peter Pinto from Double Tree by Hilton Goa. In fact he has lugged quite a kg of ingredients from Goa,” Yogendra Pal, executive chef at the Hilton Chennai, told IANS, offering the welcome drink made with Goan Kokum syrup. While the waiters at the Ayna restaurant sport colourful Goan attire with hats, soft Goan music wafts within the four walls. “Peter had brought some music CDs as were not able to find Goan music here,” Pal remarked.

Meanwhile taster portions of appetiser platter arrived at the table with the dark reddish fish recheado (pan grilled fish with red chilli paste and Goan spices) beckoning one to eat it first. Surrounding the fish recheado were sinquerim manki fry (deep fried squid with peri peri chillies), ashwem bhaijleli sungta (pan fried prawns with Goan salad) and chicken cafreal (chicken braised with fresh coriander, mint and green chillies). First to roll inside the mouth was the juicy prawns that were mild and this was followed by the relatively spicy chicken cafreal. However the hot and tasty squid activated the taste buds further to devour the yummy and spicy fish recheado. On the vegetarian side, there is batata chi kappa (semolina rusted potato patties), paneer recheado (pan grilled cottage cheese marinated with red chilli paste and Goan spices) amd alami masala (rawa fried button mushroom).

Thirty-two year old Pinto who anchors the food festival with dishes largely influenced by the Portuguese, is one of the few chefs hailing from families that encouraged their wards to take to the kitchen as their profession. “Many of my relatives are chefs in overseas hotels and cruise liners.

Hearing about their overseas travels, I wanted to become a chef,” Pinto told IANS. His late mother and aunt ran a

catering business in a Goan village. Queried about how his professional education helped his family catering business Pinto said: “The menu card expanded with the addition of up-market appetizers like cheese balls, fish/chicken fingers and others which was different from competition.” However, instead of joining the mother’s catering business Pinto decided to join the hotel line. His father is into selling building materials.

an you go to Bhopal immediately? Something big seems to have happened. Many people have died. You can help out our local bureau and return after two or three days.” This was U.R. Kalkur, a marvel of a journalist who was the deputy general manager of UNI. He spoke hours after the Bhopal gas leak of December 2-3, 1984, whose bloody magnitude wasn’t clear then but which turned out to be the world’s worst industrial disaster. All that our Bhopal colleagues knew for sure — and had told Kalkur — was that there had been an unprecedented calamity and they needed help to cover it. I flew to Bhopal post-noon of December 3, landing in a city that had been enveloped by the stench of thousands of deaths caused by a leak of lethal gas from the Union Carbide’s pesticide plant. It became clear in no time that I was in for a long haul. The “two or three days” that Kalkur said I would spend in Bhopal became 16

long days - when the world turned upside down for tens of thousands of innocents. The culprit was corporate greed. Since the Madhya Pradesh authorities appeared to have no real idea about what had happened and how, it was left to the ingenuity of the journalists to report the world’s biggest news story.

1,500 autopsies were conducted in first week BHOPAL: A staggering 1,500 postmortem examinations were conducted in the first one week after the horrific 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, recalled a doctor who has himself conducted autopsies on 15,000 gas victims over 25 years. “The doctor on night duty (at Hamidia Hospital) contacted the Union Carbide doctor and asked him what had happened. The doctor responded that tear gas has been released and applying water would help,” said D.K. Satpathy, a doctor who was on duty on that fateful night. “In a little while, people started pouring into the hospital. Bodies too began to arrive. Soon, a stack of bodies was formed in the hospital complex,” Satpathy told IANS. The gravity of the disaster soon became clear. “On the first day on Dec 3, 850 post-mortems were carried out and in seven days, around 1,500 postmortems were done,” Satpathy said. The doctor recalled that the deadly

As for the guilty Union Carbide, it simply threw up its hands. The earliest credible story spoke of a huge mass of a poisonous gas called MIC, used to produce pesticide, leaking on the night of Dec 2-3, catching — barring a few Carbide employees — Bhopal by surprise. Tens of thousands who were asleep suddenly woke up to a stinging

pain in their eyes. Like in a horror movie, thousands of men, women and children fled their houses screaming and crying in pain, many not even aware where they were headed to. Thousands simply collapsed on the streets — dead. Within 24 to 48 hours, a staggering 3,500 had died. Animals

and birds too perished in thousands. At the hospitals, doctors had no clue how to treat the victims of the poison gas. The worst hit was the sprawling shanty just outside the now shuttered Carbide plant. But the gas did travel a long way, killing some employees at the Bhopal railway station too. Most of those who were exposed to the gas but didn’t die went to hell: they lost eyesight or began to suffer various ailments that continued to kill, taking the overall death toll since 1984 to well over 25,000. There seemed to be only one way of knowing how many were dying in Bhopal: virtually camp at the mortuaries of the main hospitals as well as the Hindu cremation and Muslim burial grounds. The other source of news was a small crop of selfless activists who emerged almost out of nowhere and most of whom continue to work even today for the 1984 survivors. I still vividly recall the words of one Muslim gravedigger who sweated away despite the winter as he worked furiously with a spade: “I have no idea, Sir, how many have died.”

That’s why the pregnant women who were gas victims had children who were physically challenged.” Satpathy told IANS: “During my service from 1984 to 2009, I carried out post-mortem examinations of 15,000 gas victims.” The gas disaster killed over 3,000 people immediately and thousands others over the years due to related causes. Recalling those terrible days, Satpathy said that for a week after the worst industrial disaster in the world, people from all walks of life did not leave any stone unturned to help the needy.

ive activist groups Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Union Carbide and Dow Chemical bow to Indian courts over the Bhopal gas disaster. “We hope you and your government will be as enthusiastic in making the U.S. corporations obey Indian laws as you are (in) welcoming them to invest in our country,” the groups said in an open letter to Modi. The joint letter has been written by leaders of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogi Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Group for Information and Action, and Children Against Dow Carbide. “In the last 30 years, the govern-

Uneasy calm returns to Ferguson ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

n uneasy calm returned to Ferguson after two nights of unrest over a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in August. No incidents or confrontations were reported from the small St Louis (Missouri) suburb of 22,000, nearly 70 percent of them black, which exploded after Monday night’s verdict as the US began the Thanksgiving holiday, according to media reports. Nationwide, protests continued, but they too were peaceful for the most part, CNN reported. In Los Angeles, police arrested 130 protesters on misdemeanor charges of failure to disperse. In Oakland, California, police

Like in Punjab, Californian farmers must find new ways to conserve water, or else face major water droughts that will leave their plots of land like deserts, said Eco Sikh’s US programme manager, Sumeet Kaur.

New website to attract investment LUCKNOW: In a bid to woo non-resident Indians (NRIs) from Uttar Pradesh to invest in the state, the state government launched a website for them late on November 30, officials said. The exclusive website aims to be a single window gateway for the NRIs native to UP and now settled overseas, an official told IANS. Claiming that the website received a large number of hits and queries within hours of its launch, Mohammad Wali Abbas, head of the information and technology cell of the NRI department in Udyog Bandhu, an autonomous government body dealing with investment, said that the website would “showcase to the world that UP (Uttar Pradesh) was pretty serious about investment, specially from the NRIs”. Investment apart, the website, officials said would also encourage the emotional bonding of NRIs with their mother land, ensure the general wel-

fare of NRIs and in case of emergencies monitor special problems faced by them and coordinate with the Government of India. The NRI department would also offer to help in the coordination of technical, managerial and financial resources of the NRIs from UP. A 24x7 call center (Migrant Resource Centre) where NRIs can log complaints will be established and the UP government is also planning to felicitate outstanding performers from among the NRIs as per their approach and investment for the state.

tudent mobility is a proven means of building long-lasting relations between countries. There is no better opportunity for India and Britain to further this cause than now when our two countries mark the 400th year of direct relations. As chancellor of the University of Birmingham, the most frequent question I am asked during my visits to India relates to Britain’s poststudy work visa that allows students to work with a minimum salary threshold of 20,000 pounds a year. That’s a little under `2 million.

In 2007, I led an initiative in the British parliament calling for a two-year post-graduate work visa for international students. I was certain this would prove to be an attractive proposition, especially for Indian students. As an Indian student in Britain, there was also the prospect of building bridges for your country, enabling a third generation to be educated in the UK and paving the way for future generations in years to come. I myself was the third generation of my family to be educated in the United Kingdom, something that gave me a wonderful start in life.

US hospitals now can treat Ebola ATLANTA: US health authorities have announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have designated a total of 35 hospitals to be ready to treat Ebola patients. The CDC worked together with state health authorities to determine which hospitals could be designated “Ebola treatment centers”. “As long as Ebola is spreading in West Africa, we must prepare for the possibility of additional cases in the United States,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden in a written statement Tuesday after the announcement of the move. The medical centers in question have the trained personal and resources to provide the “full treatment” required by Ebola patients, while at the same time minimizing the risk of infecting healthcare workers. “We are implementing and constantly strengthening multiple levels of protection,” he said.

Many women desperate to join IS’ jihadi brides: Study

Big boost for Palestinian state

Islamic State fighters may be blamed by the world community for their terrorist activities but there are many who look up to them IANS, LONDON

S

ome among the admirers of the IS happen to be European women who have flocked to the war zone in the hope of becoming “jihadi brides”, the Daily Mail reported on December 2, citing the findings of new research. Academic experts monitoring the lawless region have identified at least 11 women linked to the fighters. What is worse, British women are suspected of running sex slave brothels for the IS fighters in Syria. Hundreds of women belonging to the Kurdish religious minority have been kidnapped, tortured and raped by the IS fighters, the Daily Mail report said. Still, there is growing evidence of British women being drawn to the region to support the militants. Melanie Smith, of the King’s College International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, said that

What is worse, British women are suspected of running sex slave brothels for the IS fighters in Syria. there are “hundreds” of girls who want to travel across Europe to Syria. “Hundreds. I come across girls every day who say, ‘I’m so desperate to go over there, but it’s just so hard for me’,” Smith said. However, she said that only a “tiny” proportion of girls actually make it to the war-torn region.

Smith said that there is even a “jihad matchmaker” service on Twitter in which women can post their photographs for the men to choose from. Among those who had travelled from Britain are Manchester twins Salma and Zahra Halane, 16, who fled their home in the middle of the night in June.

PARIS: French National Assembly on December 3 voted for the recognition of a Palestinian state, a symbolic move aimed at rising diplomatic pressure to resolve decade-long peace process in the Middle East. With 339 lawmakers in favor of the motion against 151 saying no on a Palestinian statehood, Paris is said to be the fifth European country to recognize Palestine as a state after Britain, Spain, Ireland and Sweden, according to Xinhua. “We don't want a symbolic recognition that will only lead to a virtual state. We want a Palestinian state that is real so we want to give a chance to negotiations,” said Minister for European Affairs Harlem Desir. France's upper house of parliament, the Senate will discuss the text on December 11.

Pak police register blasphemy case against ‘disco mullah’ IANS, ISLAMABAD

P

akistan police said on December 3 said they were investigating blasphemy allegations against a man dubbed the “disco mullah” who quit a career in pop music to become a preacher. The case against Junaid Jamshed, a member of the deeply conservative Tableeghi Jamaat organization, was brought by Mobeen Qadri, a member of the religious political party Sunni Tehreek. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Muslim-majority Pakistan. But the law does not define what is blasphemous — anyone can file a case alleging their religious feelings were hurt for any reason.

‘Disco mullah’ Junaid Jamshed

Qadri filed the case against Jamshed after he used the example of one of Prophet Muhammad’s wives to illustrate an argument about the failings of women in a video. “Now the case is with the investigators,” said Mehmood Ahmed, a police officer in Karachi.

Afghanistan: Taliban commander, eight others killed KABUL: A key Taliban commander, Zarqawi, and eight of his armed men were killed in airstrikes in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, 120 km east of Kabul, police said on December 2. “Acting upon intelligence reports, the security forces carried out airstrikes in Sorkot area of Shirzad district late last (Monday) night, killing nine insurgents including notorious commander Zar-

qawi,” Xinhua quoted provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal as telling reporters in provincial capital Jalalabad. The elimination of Zarqawi is a major blow to Taliban militants in Kunar and Nuristan, the official added. Zarqawi besides being involved in organizing suicide bombings, also beheaded his targets if captured.

Lankan opposition to form all-party government COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan opposition has agreed to form an allparty government if it wins the presidential election next year, officials here said on December 2. In a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between joint opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena and opposition political parties, including the United National Party, it was agreed that an all-party government would be formed for a period of not less than two years, Xinhua reported. The text of the MOU said the joint opposition will look to re-establishing democracy, good governance, social justice and the rule of law. The tasks will be implemented within 100 days, including the abolition of the current executive presidency and the re-establishment of a parliamentary form of government. Sirisena, a former health minister and general secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, left the government recently to contest the presidential poll as the consensus candidate for the combined opposition.

India, Pakistan urged to shun nuke power UNITED NATIONS: India, backed by the United States, opposed a UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling on New Delhi to voluntarily abandon its nuclear weapons. The resolution that also targeted Israel and Pakistan, however, passed overwhelmingly. The US joined India to vote against a key part of the resolution on achieving a nuclear weapon-free world that called on India, Israel and Pakistan to immediately and unconditionally accede to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty as non-nuclear-weapon states and put all their nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.

In plain language, this clause would have the three countries it targeted to just give up their nuclear weapons and ability to manufacture them. Israel and Pakistan also voted against the provision. It passed with 165 votes in the 193member UNGA, with 21 countries absent.

The two sides recently reached three agreements - two in the energy sector and one on India’s line of credit and another landmark power trade agreement. Tapping Nepal’s hydropower resources is a major focus in the deals signed. Mired by decades-long armed conflict that totally devastated Nepal’s economy, the size of which is a mere $62.384 billion, the Himalayan nation needs huge investments in infrastructure development.

Vasanthabalan, who has always strived to give us good cinema, especially for recreating a bygone era in grand style on screen. Then, there’s another side that will ask why all his films with great potential don’t get their due treatment. Think of Vasanthabalan, you’re reminded of the dialogue where Vedhika asks Siddharth after they

A

perform together for the first time on stage — did I act well? Siddharth, nonchalantly, replies “you’re beautiful. Isn’t that enough for a woman to impress audiences?” Of course, the context of

this dialogue is different but somehow it felt like the director was asking us how we liked his film? To which, you only have words like “beautiful”, “grand” and “inspiring”, but you’d never say it’s a great

film, at least the majority won’t. The film focuses on a Tamil drama troupe in the pre-independence period. Led by Thavathiru Sivadas Swamigal (Nassar), it throws the spotlight on two of his best students — Kaaliappa (Siddharth) and Gomathi (Prithviraj), and the rivalry between them. There’s heavy reference of Mahabharat in Kaaviya Thalaivan, which is the story of Drona (Nassar) and his gifted students Arjun (Prithviraj) and Ekalavya (Siddharth). In the second half, Siddharth’s character is partly based on his own role from Rang De Basanti. He turns into a nationalist, for reasons not quite well explained, and he uses the theatre to stage nationalist dramas.

Deven Verma: Life of a comedian

Sonakshi doesn’t feel insecure in multi-starrer MUMBAI: Actor Sonakshi Sinha will be seen in the forthcoming film Action Jackson and the actress says she doesn’t feel insecure due to the presence of multi-stars in the movie. “In my four years’ career, this is my first multi-starrer. I’ve always played solo heroine. But the fact is even in this film, I was very pampered,” Sonakshi, who will be seen along with Yami Gautam and Manasvi Mamgai in Action Jackson, told IANS. “I do films with all my sense. When I signed the film, I knew there are two more girls in it. But I am not the kind of person who gets insecure,” she added. Sonakshi, who has worked with established actors like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar as well as young stars like Ranveer Singh, says she has gotten along with all her co-stars. “Every actor is different and their personality is different. So, you can’t compare. I have gotten along well with all my co-stars. From senior actors, you get to learn a lot. But with the young lot, you learn things together,” said the 27-year-old. Directed by Prabhudeva, Action Jackson will hit theatres on December 5.

But then Adil doing a complete turn-around from his wry urbane part in English Vinglish, tends to fill the fissures in the fearless frequently loose-limbed narration. As the ‘puncture-wallah’ who suddenly finds himself at the vortex of a fierce political ‘tamasha’, Adil gets his character’s personality and thoughts from the script to screen, losing none of the fervor and flavour of the character’s reluctant heroism in the transition. Adil’s Aslam is a bit of a horny, dishonest rogue. The sense of mischief in the character never forsakes the plot. But the plot doesn’t make excuses for his shenanigans. Before the film is over, Aslam must redeem his conscience.

T LOUIS, MO-Soorya Performing Arts, which has been making marathon efforts to see that classical art forms survive the test of time and flourish for generations to enjoy, came up with the “Soorya Performing Series for Young Talent”. Its Fall-2014 series held on November 15 included three highly talented artists from Chicago, IL --a solo veena concert by Divya Pariti, a disciple of Rajaveena School of music, Chicago; a Mohiniyattam performance by Elizabeth Nellamattathil, a disciple of Aanada Dance Theater) and Vidya Govind (a disciple of Guru Hema Rajagopalan). Young Divya Pariti played veena with a confidence and the music was very vibrant

and colorful. She presented “Mayaatheetha swaroopini” in raga Mayamalavagowla, followed by “Subramanyena” in raga Shuddha Dhanyasi. Elizabeth started her Mohiniyattam performance with a composition of the 18th century Tamil poet Oothukkadu Venkata Subba Iyer ‘s Pranavakaaram Siddhivinayakam, which was followed by an expressive Jagadhodhaarana, in which she portrayed the mischievous nature of young Krishna very effectively. Vidya Govind, disciple of Guru Hema Rajagopalan, began her recital with a crisp presentation of Mallari, followed by a second half of Varnam – Suma Sayaka. Her Nritta was very clean and Abhinaya was rendered well through sanchari Bhavas (moving story lines) based on stories of

Gajendra Moksha and Kaliya mardana. She presented Narsi Mehta’s Gujarati poem depicting the negative nature of Lord Rama in doubting the purity of his wife Seetha and putting her through the test of fire (Agni Pariksha). The youth series by Soorya Performing Arts provided a much-needed opportunity for Indian American youth. This was supported by parents of Soorya Dance, Music and Yoga School; by funds received from Missouri Arts Council (MAC), a state agency of State of Missouri; Regional Arts Commission (RAC) – a city organization of St. Louis and may other patrons. The event was ably supported by many volunteers and was attended by more than 200 art patrons.

HICAGO (IL) -- Hari Om Mandir organized its 27th Annual ‘FundRaising Dinner-2014’ at India House Banquet Hall, Schaumburg, IL, on November 22. The event, which was attended by many devotees, friends, and well-wishers, was packed with great food, entertainment and fund-raising activities. Devotees recognized and praised the progress and work done for the temple and donated generously for the upcoming projects. After puja by Pandit Dinesh Kumar, fundraising chairman Anil Saxena greeted everyone present and thanked both boards for their continuous support, hoping that the lofty goals the Mandir has set would be achieved. President Indrajit Sarkar praised the contribution of Saxena and BOT chairman Ayodhia Salwan and added that but for their support many religious programs like Sankat Mochan Mahayagya could not have been held.

He spoke about the mandir’s Go Green project, health camps, a fabulous Youth Talent showcase organized by the youth group, and said that the new education classes would be a boon for the children preparing for ACT/SAT. BOT chairman Ayodhia Salwan said that plans were afoot for expanding parking facilities for devotees, an elevator for senior citizens and a new room for coats and shoes. He said that donations would be used to provide better facilities at the place of worship and make children aware about India’s rich cultural heritage and preservation of Hinduism in the land far away from their roots. Both the Boards recognized Ravinder Kalia, Subhash Saluja and Satyajit Sarkar (Youth President) for their efforts towards the growth of the temple. A grand program was organized mixed with dance by Ayushi and Palak Tripathi and performances by Shali Dhawan, Satyajit Sarkar, Ram Verma with MC Gayatri Rathod and DJ Nilesh Pardiwala.

ASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a landmark moment for the Hindu Indian American community, the Texas State Board of Education voted last month to adopt new textbooks that dramatically improve the way Hinduism is depicted. The Hindu American Foundation was involved in the adoption process from the beginning, working with scholars and historians to ensure a constructive and accurate understanding of Hinduism. As a result of the changes made by publishers in response to HAF’s reviews, the textbooks now present a picture of Hinduism that emphasizes the religion’s core philosophies with accurate explanations of key concepts. “This is a game-changing moment for our community,” said Houston-based HAF board member Rishi Bhutada, who testified before the state board in September, urging changes to the proposed content. “This is the first time that this type of textbook reform has ever been accomplished on a statewide level anywhere in the U.S., and to do it in Texas, one of the two

biggest textbook markets in the country, is amazing,” the Indian American activist said. Educators, several publishers, and other advocacy groups worked closely with HAF to make sure the representations of Hinduism were not steeped in the archaic and inaccurate “caste, cows, and karma” approach that has dominated textbook content for years. With 100 errors corrected, additional changes include the inclusion of Hinduism and Hindus in contemporary world history and geography, and greater context in the explanation of caste, including the definition of terms such as varna and jati. Another publisher mentioned the Hindu saint Adi Shankara, the first time such a reference has been made in an American K-12 textbook. HAF’s director of Education and Curriculum Reform, Dr. Murali Balaji, said that the changes reflected rigorous academic feedback and a fact-based approach to teaching about Hinduism. Balaji credited an engaged Hindu Indian American community in Texas as well as the leadership of Bhutada and HAF executive council member Dr. Rajiv Pandit of Fort Worth who worked to get members of the Dallas-Fort Worth community engaged in the importance of the review. The textbook vote is final, and the textbook changes will reflect in materials next year. The Hindu American Foundation’s evidence-based efforts in education reform have been acknowledged in Texas and across the country, including by prominent social studies and history organizations such as the National Council for the Social Studies.

Sindhu retains

India’s tri-series Down Under rescheduled

Macau Open title

Two-time World Championships bronze medalist beats Korean Kim in the final IANS, MACAU

I

ndian shuttler P.V. Sindhu successfully defended her Macau Open Grand Prix Gold women’s singles title, beating South Korean Kim Hyo Min in straight games at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion here on November 30. Two-time World Championships bronze medalist Sindhu registered a comprehensive 21-12, 21-17 victory in 45 minutes in the final of the $120,000 event. Playing against the World No.91 Kim for the first time, the Indian

World No.11 won the first game with ease. After a brief tussle till the ninepoint mark, Sindhu upped the ante and grabbed five straight points before sealing the game by taking six successive points. She pressurized Kim with aggressive play and won the game 21-12. Kim improved her game but failed to stop a determined Sindhu from winning the second game. The South Korean matched Sindhu shot by shot and enjoyed a 11-8 lead. After the two-minute break, however, Sindhu regained her focus and collected five points

on the trot. The 18-year-old Kim battled hard to equalize at 13-all before the Hyderabadi again went on the offensive and bagged four straight points to hold a 17-13 lead. This win marked Sindhu’s third Grand Prix title triumph. In the men’s singles competition, Xue Song defeated Wong Wing Ki Vincent 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 in an hour and four minutes. In the men’s doubles final, Singapore’s pair of Danny Bawa Chris-

nanta and Chayut Triyachart edged Indonesian team of Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi 21-19, 22-20 in 43 minutes. While Chinese women’s doubles pairing of Ou Dongini and Xiaohan Yu won 19-21, 21-19, 21-9 in an hour and five minutes against compatriot Yaqiong Huang and Zhong Quanxin, Chrisnanta and Yu Yan Vaneesa Neo settled for a runners-up finish in the mixed doubles event.

SYDNEY: Cricket Australia (CA) on December 2 revised the schedule for the One-Day International (ODI) tri-Series involving India, Australia and England. The series opener on January 16 will now be played between the hosts and the English instead of the Indians at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The rescheduling of the ODI was warranted following postponement of the first of the four-match Test series against India to December 9. “The change was necessary as the Indian players needed appropriate recovery time after the tour match which has been placed just after the Test match at Sydney and in the lead up to the first ODI Tri series match,” Cricket Australia said.

Bhutia conferred AFC ‘Hall of Fame Award’ IANS, MANILA

F Hughes given emotional funeral SYDNEY: Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes was remembered by more than 5,000 people at an emotional funeral service in his hometown of Macksville in New South Wales on December 3. The service paid tribute to the popular batsman who was described as a “one of a kind” and “as loyal as they come”, reports Xinhua. Australian captain Michael Clarke choked back tears as he delivered an emotional eulogy to his former teammate, while Hughes’ best friends, his brother, sister and cousin, and Cricket Australia (CA) CEO James Sutherland, also honored his gregarious personality and gentle nature. Hughes, 25, died on November 27 after being struck on the head by a bouncer in a domestic match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) two days earlier. The funeral was watched by many more people at live screenings at the

SCG, Adelaide Oval, Blundstone Arena, the Gabba in Brisbane, the WACA Ground in Perth and Melbourne’s Federation Square. Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Opposition leader Bill Shorten, as well as the entire Australian Test team and the Australian women’s team, attended the service. Indian stand-in captain Virat Kohli and team director Ravi Shastri also attended the service. Hughes’ brother Jason, father Gregory, cricketers Clarke, Aaron Finch and Tom Cooper and friends Corey Ireland, Mitchell Lonergan and Matthew Day acted as pallbearers, with his coffin led out of the service by a guard of honor and through the streets of Macksville. In the midst of the service, Michael Clarke choked back tears as he spoke of his “little brother.” Clarke, who was also a close friend of Hughes, reminisced about the times they spent playing together.

ormer Indian national football team captain Bhaichung Bhtutia was on November 30 honored with the AFC Hall of Fame Award on occasion of the Asian Football Confederation’s 60th anniversary here. FIFA president Sepp Blatter presented the award to Bhaichung on the Awards Night. AIFF president Praful Patel was also present as were a host of other dignitaries from all over the footballing World. Moments after receiving it, Bhaichung said the

award was not solely for him “but for Indian football”. “It is an honor to be accepting this award not on my behalf, but for football, for India and for all Indian footballers who have to struggle against all odds to prove themselves

every single day,” he told www.theaiff.com. “This is an award for Indian football,” he reiterated. “When I first started playing football as a kid, I never imagined where the game would take me.”

Show us you are not in conflict of interest: SC to Srini IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court on December 1 asked the beleaguered Indian cricket board president N. Srinivasan to show he was not in conflict of interest over the betting allegations against his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, an official of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings that Srinivasan’s firm owns. Srinivasan, besides being the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is also a member of the Indian Premier

N Srinivasan is the president of BCCI and a member of IPL governing council.

League (IPL) governing council and vice-chairman and managing director of India Cement Ltd. “There is either conflict of interest or there is no conflict of interest. There is no third thing. Show us that there is no conflict of interest,” Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla told senior counsel Kapil Sibal who appeared for the BCCI chief. “Conflict of interest is certainly an issue (that) we will examine. We will lift the veil. That we will, that we will,” said Justice Thakur.

Indian women

taking to wine in right spirit Societal acceptability, its perceived healthier attribute and the mushrooming of swanky retail outlets make them feel comfortable APARAJITA GUPTA, NEW DELHI/BANGALORE:

K

rithika Iyer, 32, lives in Bangalore and is a human resource consultant with a multinational. She comes from a conservative family, well versed in Carnatic music and other spiritual and cultural facets that come with her upbringing. But that doesn’t hold Iyer back from stepping out of her plush Brigade Gateway apartment on a lazy Saturday noon and head for the Orion Mall within the gated complex to pick her choice of wine — her chats with the sommeliers at restaurants come in handy! A Sunday brunch with her husband with some wine to pair is a ritual the couple has been following for the past couple of years and helps them unwind and catch up with matters which their busy schedules otherwise prevent them from doing so during weekdays. Krithika’s story is not an isolated

White cup makes your coffee more intense NEW YORK: Can the color of the mug influence the taste of your coffee? Yes, say researchers, suggesting that coffee tastes more intense when served in a white cup. The idea for the study came to Australian researcher George Van Doorn who was told by Barista Lavazza, one of the biggest coffee restaurant chains, that “when coffee is consumed from a white, ceramic

mug, it tastes more bitter than when drunk from a clear, glass mug”. Van Doorn and his colleagues put the theory to test by offering 36 volunteers coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk in three different colored mugs — white, blue and transparent. People who drank from the white mug rated the coffee as more intense and less sweet than when served the same beverage in a blue or transparent cup. “These results support the view that the color of the mug should be considered by those serving coffee as it can influence the consumer’s multisensory coffee drinking experience.”

one today. More Indian women are now getting inclined towards wine. Three reasons stand out: Societal acceptability, its perceived healthier attribute and the mushrooming of swanky retail outlets where a woman does not have to feel uncomfortable going in. “People in India today, women included, are passionate about wine,” said Radhika Bahl, founding member of the Delhi Wine Club. “The predominant reason for women having wine is: it is not a hard liquor. It is a better option for social drinking. It is healthy. And a glass or two of red wine has medicinal impact too, and wine is definitely an experience they like to talk about and share,” Bahl added. The Delhi Wine Club has 160 members, out of which 40 percent are women. But data is not available on how much women account for in the annual Indian wine industry sales of 2.5 million cases, with each containing 12 bottles of 750 ml each.

When it’s sweets, it has to be Lovely! JAIDEEP SARIN, JALANDHAR (PUNJAB)

f there is a brand name that links directly to Punjab’s sweet tooth, it is Lovely. The Jalandhar-based Lovely Sweets Mall has over the last five decades mastered the art of tickling the taste buds of people across northern India, particularly in Punjab. Famous for its ‘moti-chur’ ladoos over the years, Lovely Sweets is no longer confined to one popular item alone. It now offers over 250 varieties of sweets, besides other snacks and salted eatables. It offers over 25 types of ladoos, including 10 varieties made in rich desi ghee. “When my father, Baldev Raj, started our first shop in 1961 in Jalandhar Cantt, there were only four items available and the ladoos and barfi were the most popular. The second generation of our family initially added 20-odd items.
