@hiindia /hiindianoone /hiindialive industry for a year or two suddenly returns from the US and wants to convert a large amount of dollars, people start wondering about the source of the money. This involves a few actresses who have fallen on hard times as they are not getting work,” Shivaji Raja, senior actor-comedian and president of Movie Artists Association (MAA), the apex body of Telugu film artists, said.

She told News18: “Fact is that it is not new thing going in the US. Mostly it is C or D-grade artistes, who are not lead actors but do supporting roles in films… they fall into this trap.” MIDWEST EDITION | EAST COAST EDITION The | Volume 8 • Issue No. 468, JUNE Chicago scandal has become sensation in Tollywood, across India and in NRI Circles. Many newspapers in Hyderabad have covered ugumudi (Vibha Jayam) with her husband Kishan Modugumudi the incident in detail. Many newspapers got hold of audio tapes of ‘Kishan Modugumudi’ in which he is heard haggling with a Tollywood anchor about a hotel, and warning her not to step outside of hotel in Dallas, TX. Meanwhile, it looks like the shockwaves across Tollywood are in no mood to subside, as another actress has been arrested for involvement in prostitution racket. It has been a really bad news so far for the entertainment industry as the ugly face of crime underlying all the glitter and glamour has resurfaced to shock the nation.

The women activists said that the measures for women safety that were outlined a month ago should be implemented with immediate effect.

Upcoming starlets The federal investigators in Chicago who are investigating the alleged sex racket involving several upcoming actresses from Tollywood were looking for president of Telugu Association of North America (TANA) president Satish Vemana to question him in connection with the scandal. So, the investigating authorities sent a message to TANA secretary requesting him to prevail upon Satish to call back and cooperate in the investigation. They reportedly found two letters of TANA and Telangana People’s Association of Dallas (TPAD). Apparently, the police wanted to verify whether the letters were genuine or fake when the shady couple was arrested in Chicago. Apparently, Kishan and Chandra lured the actresses through invites from TANA, TPAD, American Telugu Association and Detroit Telugu Association. During the questioning by the police, the actresses who were forced to indulge in sex trade, told them that they had come to the US on the invitation from these associations coordinated by event manager Kishan.

Tired of Dizziness or Imbalance? You are Not Alone! We Can Help You! Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS) is the region’s #1 specialist for vestibular and balance disorders and the only private practice in Chicagoland’s northwest suburbs utilizing NeuroCom’s NASA-based Smart Equi Test System. Rupangi Patel is the co-founder and CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS), located in a state-of-the-art facility near Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall. "Our goal is to help people get back to their daily life as quickly as possible,” says Rupangi. She has been serving the northwest suburbs since 1990 and has worked with many of the leading area hospitals. Her passion for helping people led her to start her own clinic in 2005.

How does testing on the SMART Equi System evaluate my balance? Balance is a very complex interaction between the sensory system and brain. The Equi Test System helps us determine if there is a problem in the interaction between your sensory system – eyes, ears, sensation in your feet and joints – and the brain, which coordinates your movements. This equipment also allows us to compare your performance to that of other people your age who don’t have balance or vestibular issues. What does therapy consist of once my balance issues are determined? Our specialists set up a rehabilitation protocol for your functional limitation and quantify performance over time. This means better outcomes that carry over to daily living. The therapy consists of specific balance exercises, including head movements, changing surfaces,

At PTS we provide orthopedic, neurological and vestibular rehabilitation and have helped thousands of patients in the community. What is the SMART Equi Test System and how can it help me? The system was initially developed for NASA to evaluate how space flight affects balance control and inner ear function in astronauts. This equipment allows our rehab professionals to perform six tests that measure body movement and sway during different purposeful movements or when standing still.

How many treatments will q it take for me to see an improvement with my balance? Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation q of your condition. Most of 4 our patients have seen a significant improvement in as little as one to two weeks.

TRAVEL BAN: TRUMP HAILS COURT US Supreme Court has ruled President Donald Trump’s travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries lawful and termed it ‘a tremendous victory’

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump this week hailed the Supreme Court ruling that travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries is lawful and termed it “a tremendous victory” and “moment of profound vindication”. In a 5-4 opinion, the court found that Trump’s executive order on the immigration restriction fell “squarely within the scope of Presidential authority under the INA (the Immigration and Nationality Act)”. “The [order] is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who cannot be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion.

“The text says nothing about religion.” Roberts wrote, rejecting claims that the ban was motivated by religious hostility. “Today’s Supreme Court ruling

is a tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution,” Trump said in a statement. “The Supreme Court has upheld the clear authority of the President

to defend the national security of the US. In this era of worldwide terrorism and extremist movements bent on harming innocent civilians, we must properly vet those coming into our country,” he added. Trump said the ruling “is also a moment of profound vindication” for his government “following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country”, Efe reported. “As long as I am President, I will defend the sovereignty, safety, and security of the American People, and fight for an immigration system that serves the national interests of the United States and its citizens. Our country will always be safe, secure, and protected on my watch,” he said.

The case has been central to the White House immigration policy, presenting a key test of Trump’s campaign promise to restrict immigration and secure the US borders, Xinhua reported. Trump has signed three versions of executive orders on immigration restrictions targeting several Muslim-majority countries. The initial order, signed soon after he took office in January last year, led to days of nationwide protests and chaos at airports across the country. The third version of Trump’s travel ban barred nearly all travelers from five mainly Muslim countries, namely Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. It also adds a ban on travelers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and government officials from Venezuela.

US House rejects immigration bill backed by Trump IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US House of Representatives this week defeated Republican-drafted immigration bill despite President Donald Trump’s last-minute plea and amid chaos over reunion of separated families who illegally cross the US border. The vote failed with 121 votes in favor and 301 against. The opposition was from all Democrats and dozens of Republicans, Xinhua news agency reported. Hours before the vote, Trump made the last-minute push for the legislation on Twitter. “House Republicans should pass the strong but fair immigration

Justice Anthony Kennedy to retire WASHINGTON: Justice Anthony Kennedy, who provided key votes for same sex-marriage, abortion access and affirmative action, has announced his retirement from the US Supreme Court, a move that will give the President a chance to replace the pivotal justice and solidify a more conservative majority. “It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” The Washington Post quoted the 81-year-old as saying in a statement released on June 27, his last day of the term. —IANS

which failed last week in the House with 193 in favor and 231 against. Following the failure of the “hardline” bill, House Republican leaders twice delayed the second voting, in hope that Republicans,

given more time, would modify the bill again so as to secure 218 votes to pass the legislation. The failed “hardline” bill would have provided funding for a border wall, ended the diversity visa lottery programme, limited family-based visas, created an agriculture guest worker program requiring employers to use the E-Verify program and allowed for the federal government to cut funding for sanctuary cities. Every Democrat and 41 Republicans voted against it. Under the “moderate” or “compromise” bill, the Donald Trump government would have stopped the forced migrant family separation, got 25 billion dollars to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Melania Trump promotes ‘kindness, compassion, positivity’ IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S First Lady Melania Trump promoted “kindness, compassion and positivity” at a youth conference, her first public appearance since her jacket controversy. “Kindness, compassion, and positivity are very important traits in life. It is far easier to say nothing than it is to speak words of kindness. It is easier to judge quickly than to take time to understand. It is often easier to see a glass halfempty than half full,” she said at the Students Against Destructive Decisions’ (SADD) annual conference on June 25 evening. “You have the power to be the positive force in so many people’s

lives. Show respect to each other. Treat your community like your family, and look out for one another,” CNN quoted the First Lady as

saying. Trump, who met SADD student leaders before her speech, told the group that youth leadership programmes “can be such a

positive influence for the future”. The First Lady came under fire last week when she wore a jacket emblazoned with the words “I really don’t care. Do u?” on her way to an unannounced border facility visit in Texas. It’s unclear who her message was intended to reach, her spokeswoman tweeting “#ItsJustAJacket” while the President tweeted that the message was aimed at the media. Last month, the first lady unveiled her “Be Best” platform, CNN reported. It outlined three predominant avenues of focus: health and wellbeing, kindness and safety online and highlighting the effects of the opioid crisis on children.

Addressing a public rally here in Sant Kabir Nagar district, where the 15th century mystic poet and saint Kabir Das breathed his last, Modi said that while the saint wanted rulers to work for people’s welfare ignoring caste and status, political parties were now joining hands just for power. “The very people who opposed each other and measures like Emergency are now coming together for power,” he said, rebuking the opposition parties. Eyewitnesses said that the plane was seen hurtling down in the narrow Jeevadaya Lane area and crashed with a deafening sound before breaking into pieces and bursting

into flames around 1.15 p.m. There were two pilots and as many engineers on board. The fuselage had broken into several pieces and one piece was recovered at least 50 meters away while some other portions of the plane burnt in the premises of an underconstruction building. The fire was brought under control within half an hour by the fire brigade. The aircraft’s crucial Flight Data Recorder or Black Box was recovered.

US-India 2+2 Dialogue postponed as Putin-Trump meet nears IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he first India-US strategic 2+2 Dialogue scheduled to be held in Washington on July 6 has been postponed, possibly due to the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that might happen around mid-July, requiring the full attention of the American administration. The July 6, 2+2 Dialogue involving External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and their US counterparts Mike Pompeo

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj

Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

and James Mattis would be too close to the likely summit date, that can be scheduled immediately before or after the NATO summit

in Brussels on July 11 and 12, and Trump’s British visit, July 13-16. The news came even as US Permanent Representative to the UN

Nikki Haley met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj here on Wednesday. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted that US Secretary of State Pompeo spoke to Sushma Swaraj “to express his regret and deep disappointment at the US having to postpone the 2+2 Dialogue for unavoidable reasons”. According to him, Pompeo sought Sushma Swaraj’s understanding “and they agreed to identify new mutually convenient dates to hold the Dialogue at the earliest, in India or the US”.

The 2+2 Dialogue format was agreed to between the two sides during Modi’s visit to Washington in June 2017 when he met Trump for the first time. Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James Mattis were supposed to host the Indian ministers at the meeting that was to focus on strengthening strategic, security, and defense cooperation with both countries confronting global challenges. The dialogue was being looked at as a centerpiece of the growing ties between India and the US which Washington wants to scale up by extending the strategic vision from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean.

Does Kashmir matter for BJP? As expected, since ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’ was not successful enough in winning over the fence-sitters, the party now seems to opt for a hawkish stance in the tense Valley AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) withdrawing support from the Mehbooba Mufti government in Jammu and Kashmir points to the kind of line which the party intends to follow in the runup to next year’s general election not only in the state, but in the country in general. The series of recent by-election defeats, the inability to form a government in Karnataka and the uncertainty about its prospects in the three state assembly elections this winter have apparently led to a firming up of the BJP’s strategy in favor of a hard line. Having seen that the inclusive sabka saath, sabka vikas pitch has not been noticeably successful in winning over the fence-sitters, the party appears to have opted for a hawkish stance. And where else can such a policy have a more visible impact than in the Kashmir Valley? As Ram Madhav, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) man in the BJP has conceded, the party’s base in Jammu and Ladakh — the two non-Muslim regions in the state — was being eroded on account of the perception that it was being compelled to pursue a soft line in tackling the militants

Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti (left) with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Photo: IANS)

because of its alliance with the supposedly pro-separatist Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with its roots mainly in the Valley. The PDP’s opposition to Article 371 of the Constitution of India, which grants a special status to Kashmir, and to the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act was tying the BJP’s hands in the view of its supporters. The PDP’s preference for an extension of the Ramzan ceasefire was another instance where the two parties did not see eye-to-eye. It was only a question of time,

therefore, before the rupture took place. It was an unlikely alliance anyway between an avowedly proHindu party and a party of Kashmiri Muslims which was believed to be in broad agreement with the sentiments in favor of azadi (freedom) if it meant greater autonomy for the state and a reduction in the army’s visible presence. The BJP must have also been uneasy about the possibility that the PDP will strike first. There were two occasions when it might have done so. The first was after

the horror of the rape of a Muslim child in Kathua where some of the BJP’s followers wanted the case against the accused to be tried by the Central Bureau of Investigation rather than by the state police. And the second was when the centre decided not to extend the Ramzan ceasefire. Mehbooba Mufti’s inexperience may explain her failure to act even when she could not have been unaware of the fact that her party was losing ground among its supporters because of the alliance with

the BJP. The gainer will be undoubtedly the National Conference, which is why it wants the state assembly dissolved followed by an election. The BJP, on the other hand, does not seem to have much interest in the Valley, where it secured a measly 2.2 percent of the votes in 2014 and won no seats. It didn’t win any seats in Buddhist-dominated Ladakh either. The BJP won 22 of the party’s 25 seats in the 87member assembly from Hindumajority Jammu — a far cry from the pre-election “Mission 44” boast of party chief Amit Shah. In any event, the BJP appears to have given up banking on the Muslim votes in any state. As much is evident from the reported listing by the BJP and RSS bigwigs at a conclave in Surajkund, Haryana, of the three negative factors — farmers’ distress, Dalit alienation and the proposed unity of opposition parties — which the BJP will face in 2019. Evidently, the BJP believes that any effort to win over the Muslims is of little use. However, the BJP will be making a mistake if, as a corollary to its policy of ignoring the Muslims, the party resorts to what its opponents call the polarization of society on communal lines to consolidate its base among the Hindus.

Confirmation of the summit came after a two-hour meeting between Putin and visiting US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Efe reported. “I can say that an agreement has been reached on holding the summit, even an agreement on the date and venue,” Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said, adding that a “very convenient place for us and the American side has been selected in a third country.” The time and place of this sum-

However, “Iran is prepared for the worst-case scenarios” in case the US pressures take effect, he noted. Meanwhile, “there is no surplus capacity for countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to supply oil for a long term,” the official pointed out. We took the tension level down,” CNN quoted the top diplomat as saying.

Pompeo also confirmed North Korea was yet to return the remains of any of the fallen US service members who died in the

dozens of questions about US diplomatic efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, which culminated in a leaders’ summit earlier this month between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “I’m not prepared to talk about the details of the discussions that are taking place,” he said, “I think it would be inappropriate and, frankly, counterproductive to achieving the end state that we’re hoping to achieve.” Pompeo also affirmed that Trump was willing to walk away from talks with Pyongyang if they go sour and continue the so-called “peaceful pressure” sanctions campaign.

Amid growing public outrage, Trump signed an executive order earlier this week calling for an end to the family separations. Details were scant as of last week, however,

federal officials said they were preparing to house 20,000 migrant children on four American military bases. Harris blasted the administration for giving “no indication” of how the process of reuniting separated migrant families would work. The administration said last week that about 500 families have now been reunified after being separated at the border. At the same time, some migrant parents have been deported while their children remain in US custody, raising concerns about whether they’ll be able to reunite. “As it stands today, there is no plan or procedure in place by the federal government to ensure the safe and effective reunification of parents and their young children,” Carmen Chavez, Executive Director of Casa Cornelia Law Centre, said as the crowd outside the Otay Mesa Detention Centre repeatedly shouted “shame”.

Rao said the leaders of his party and even people were ready for early elections. He exuded confidence that TRS will win over 100 seats in 119-member state assembly. Elections to Telangana assembly are scheduled in April-May next year, along with Lok Sabha elections but ever since the TRS chief’s meeting, there have been reports of

the elections being advanced. Modi is understood to have hinted that simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya

Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could be conducted by November-December. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, held meetings with TRS leaders dur-

ing last few days to discuss the possibility of early elections and to review the preparedness of the party. Earlier this week, KCR formally admitted former minister Danam Nagender into the TRS. Nagender, quit the Congress and joined the ruling party, along with his followers. Speaking on the occasion, KCR said all surveys show that TRS will win the next elections as the party was striving to achieve the goal of golden Telangana. He slammed the opposition parties for criticizing the government. Alleging the opposition parties were unable to digest the number of welfare and development schemes launched by the TRS government during last four years, he challenged them to face the early elections.

GERMANY OUT FROM WORLD CUP Reigning champion fails to reach knockout stage after shocking loss to South Korea

efending champions Germany crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the group stage after South Korea stunned the European powerhouse with a 2-0 victory in their final Group F contest here on June 27. From Group F, Sweden secured the top spot with six points, while Mexico, which also had six points, finished second due to an inferior goal difference. South Korea ended the group stage in the third spot with three points — same as Germany, who are also going home. Before the two matches in the group on the day, Mexico had the best chance to enter the knockout

Manu shoots gold with world record; Anish gets bronze SUHL (GERMANY): Teen sensation Manu Bhaker fired an individual gold medal with a world record score while Anish Bhanwala bagged a bronze as India continued their dominance at the ISSF Junior World Cup on June 27. The 16-year-old Manu shot 242.5 in the 24-shot final to win the yellow medal in the 10 meter air pistol event even as Anish added to India’s tally by finishing third in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol. China’s Kaiman Lu took the silver with an effort of 236.9, a massive 5.6 points behind the Indian’s score while another Chinese Xue Li settled for the bronze with a final round score of 216.2. This was Manu’s seventh individual gold in an International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) competition and the third with a world record.

ST. PETERSBURG (RUSSIA): A late goal from Marcos Rojo gave Argentina a 2-1 triumph over Nigeria in their final Group D match on June 26 as the two-time champions entered the FIFA World Cup prequarterfinals. Rojo scored the winner for Argentina in the 86th minute after Victor Moses’ penalty conversion in the 51st minute had cancelled out Lionel Messi’s strike in the 14th minute. Following the win, Argentina have four points in total and they are second in the table. The other two teams in the group, Nigeria (three points) and Iceland (one point) have crashed out of the tournament.

Brazil beat Serbia to join knock-out stage MOSCOW: Brazil eliminated Serbia with a 2-0 victory as the five-time world champions entered the FIFA World Cup pre-quarterfinals by topping the Group E here on June 27. Paulinho (36th minute), Thiago Silva (68th minute) gave the South American powerhouse an easy victory

stage, as a tie in the match with Sweden would be enough for it to qualify, while both Sweden and Germany fought with each other for second place, needing an outright victory and a big goal difference. South Korea also had a possibility to enter the playoffs as well,

which took their points tally to seven after all the three of their games in the group stage. Switzerland finished the Group E in the second spot with five points to book a spot in the second round. Serbia finished third with three points and are eliminated alongside Costa Rica.

For Brazil, who had played a 1-1 draw with the Swiss before defeating Costa Rica, the victory over Serbia was soured by a leg injury to Real Madrid left-back Marcelo, who hobbled off the pitch in the opening minutes, reports Xinhua news agency. —IANS

however, only if Sweden lost the game to Mexico. South Korea took care of their own end at the Kazan Arena, with Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min scoring in second half stoppage time. But Sweden made it all moot by beating Mexico 3-0 in Ekaterin-

burg, reported Yonhap news agency. South Korea, as expectedly, deployed counter-attacking strategy to foil the German heavyweights. South Korea had only 31 per cent of ball possession in the match, and attempted only 251 passes, a third less than Germany.

Argentina, who were on the brink of elimination after playing a draw against Iceland before a disastrous 03 defeat to Croatia in their first two matches, started the match against Nigeria with one point in their bag. They knew that despite a win against Nigeria, who were also in contention, their spot in the Round-of-16 is not guaranteed as Croatia, who had already qualified, played Iceland.

But those statistics weren’t important as the final score. Against Germany, South Korea used a defensive lineup. With the absence of their midfield orchestrator and team captain, Ki Sungyueng, South Korea started with 44-2 setup, but there was a twist as usual. Jang Hyun-soo, who started last two matches as a center back, protected back four as defensive midfielder, hoping his defensive efforts could work in the midfield against German technicians. Koo Ja-cheol, who is with German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, played behind Son Heung-min, another South Korean player who is familiar with Germans with his stints at Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen.

ontinuing their dominance, world champions India demolished Kenya 50-15 in a lopsided Group A match of the Kabaddi Masters at the Al Wasl Sports Club on June 26. India’s winning streak continued as Rahul Chaudhary, Sandeep Narwal and Ajay Thakur starred in a match where players, who had not featured in the meet yet, were tested. Veteran player Manjeet Chillar and Raju Lal Chaudhary are among the players, who were included in June 26’s game. Right from the start, Indian dominated the proceeding, inflicting an all out within five minutes of the game. After seven minutes, Kenya managed to open their account when Surender Nada fell outside the mat but Rishank quickly revived him with a brilliant

raid. India kept on taking points and Kenya’s defense and raiders struggle continued. In-form Rishank was substituted by star raider Rahul Chaudhary and the move proved successful as he kept on taking bonus points with some brilliant raids.

He also forced Kenya to play with one man and opened the way for another all-out. With just less than four minutes to go, Indian defense comprising of Nada inflicted another all out to make scorecard read 24-4. The much awaited moment for

the fans came when veteran player Chillar stepped on the mat in place of defender Girish. However, he did not raid till halftime. Both teams went to the mid-game break with scoreboard reading 29-5 in favor of India. The change of end saw India making another substitution as Deepak Niwas Hooda stepped on the court and straightaway went for a raid. But it was Rahula’s excellent raid which inflicted the third all out of the match. With five minutes to the second half, India made 36-5. Deepak also joined the part and took points in almost each raid. Towards the end, Kenya managed to grab some points as they forced India to play with two players — Surjeet and Manjeet. However, lack of experience cost them as India came back strongly and revived all their players towards the end with a brilliant raid of Nada to close the match at 50-15.

AMMA. “After this decision, the name of the organization AMMA (mother) does not suit it anymore. The ruling Left government and

the CPI-M party should look into this,” added Josephine. Dileep’s reinstatment has become the centre of a row following the newly formed Women in Cinema Collective’s (WCC) Facebook post and the subsequent resignation by four leading actresses from AMMA this week. Even, Kerala Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty on June 28 expressed surprise in the manner in which AMMA had revoked Dileep’s suspension. “It should not be forgotten that actors are icons and they should be perfect role models, but this decision that they took is baffling and not tenable. “It’s surprising that the two legislators — Mukesh of the CPI-M

begin this journey, we plan to sell tickets for commercial flights from next year,” Rob Meyerson, Senior Vice President at Blue Origin, told the gathering at the AWS public sector summit here. “Setting up colonies on the Moon and other planets is our primary target and we will need large payloads for surface landing. We are building the appropriate technology for that,” Meyerson informed. The statement is in line with US President Donald Trump’s directive to put NASA on a path to lead the return of Americans to the Moon. SpaceX has postponed its plans to send space tourists this year to circle the Moon, owing to technical and production challenges.

Tollywood sex racket: wheels within wheels industry for a year or two suddenly returns from the US and wants to convert a large amount of dollars, people start wondering about the source of the money. This involves a few actresses who have fallen on hard times as they are not getting work,” Shivaji Raja, senior actor-comedian and president of Movie Artists Association (MAA), the apex body of Telugu film artists, said.

BY AJAY AGNIHOTRI HICAGO, IL – The Tollywood prostitution racket in which an Indian couple reportedly lured young actresses from Tollywood to the US on the pretext of events but instead advertised them for sex work across the country, seems to be getting murkier by the day. After two top actresses in the south film industry were named in the scandal that was busted in Chicago, the investigators reportedly questioned three actresses on their suspected involvement in the matter for over six hours at an international airport in the US. The actresses were asked why they were in the US and asked to prove their purpose of visit. The three were let go after the officials were convinced that they were in the US for a legitimate event.

C

Lure of US trip “Is she flexible?” That was the question posed to the manager of a young Telugu actress some time last year. On the plate was a trip to the US, where the actress was expected to be part of an event organized by the Telugu Association of a city in the Midwestern part of the US, close to the Canada border. The couple--Kishan Modugumudi and his wife Chandrakala alias Vibha-- was Hyderabadbased till a few years ago, working in a production firm before vanishing from the city scene. However, they seem to have kept their contacts in the Deccan alive as their representatives are former film journalists and secretaries to film stars. The couple targeted actresses who after tasting initial success were not getting significant work. The ploy was to approach the women, talking about the advantages of networking with the Telugu diaspora in the US and then luring them into the sex racket. Telugu conferences The money offered to attend the event ranged between Rs 5 and 8 lakhs. They were subsequently taken to Telugu conferences across the US for “purposes of identifying potential customers who would pay the Modugumudis in order for the customers to engage in commercial sex acts with the victims”. Vibha (Chandrakala) is reported as haggling furiously over the money to be charged from the clients, asking for anywhere between $1000 and $2500 for two to three hours. She is also reported to have sent several photographs of the victims to help the customers decide, indicating a cold and calculated racket. The modus operandi of the couple was to ensure any actress was first asked to fly into Chicago, even if the event was on either side of the coast. They would be told that they could spend two days for shopping and sightseeing. The identity of the hotel would be invariably kept under wraps and with a reason, as a source who traveled on such a trip discovered on landing. Soliciting customers The event is where the couple would solicit customers by circulating the photographs. The complaint quotes customers who were interrogated admitting that “Vibha is known in the local Telugu community as one of the women to go to or contact regarding sex with actresses.” The racket is believed to have been in operation for the last 4-5 years though the victims interrogated are those who traveled in 2017 and the first quarter of 2018. On December 22, 2017, Victim A sent an email to Modugumudi, throwing light on the web she was caught in. She wrote: “You constantly keep calling me and threatening me. I would like to stop all

interaction via voice messages, text messages or call etc., please do not call me and don’t try to contact me. It was very unpleasant doing business with you and I don’t want to do any business with you now or in future. If you try contacting me again I will have to make formal complaint.” Shady operators The identity of the five actresses has been kept a secret though in Telugu film circles, most people seem to know who had traveled to the US for events organized by the couple. The Telugu Movies Artistes Association plans to advise its members to be wary of shady operators whose antecedents do not seem above board. But this case coming to light, soon after the casting couch allegations leveled by actress Sri Reddy against top guns of the Telugu film industry, does not show Tollywood in a flattering light. While the three actresses haven’t been named yet, it is reported that one of them is a known name in Telugu and Tamil films, while another actress recently made news for her relationship with an actor from a respected film family. The third actress is said to be a popular name in the Kannada film industry and has also done a few Telugu movies. An affidavit with complaint filed says that one of the victims had received an invite from the Telugu Association of Southern California (TASC) last year. However, TASC denied sending any letter to the actress. Inquiry demanded The officials also probed the North America Telugu Society (NATS) and they, too, said that they hadn’t invited any actress and there was no conference in Illinois in 2017. The officials also found letterheads of the American Telugu Association. Seeking an inquiry into a Tollywood sex racket that was busted in Chicago, the Telangana Film Development Corporation (TFDC) has

intimated the city police department. This comes around the same time when women’s organizations in the city are raising objections to the naming of the female artistes from the Telugu film industry (TFI) involved in the racket. They have demanded that the TFDC announce an action plan to stop sexual harassment in the industry. The women activists said that the measures for women safety that were outlined a month ago should be implemented with immediate effect. Plea to govt They also demanded that the government take cognizance of the Chicago incident and begin an inquiry. TFDC officials said that this has already begun. Ram Mohan Rao, chairperson of TFDC, informed media, “The incident took place in Chicago and we need to find out if the persons who came forward to complain were part of the racket willingly or were forced into it. We need to see both the sides and then come to a conclusion.” Recently, after wrapping up the shoot of her Telugu film Pantham, actress Mehreen Pirzada was travelling from Vancouver to the US to meet her family. At the airport, she was questioned by the officials of US Department of Homeland & Immigration when they came to know that she was an actress. She said, “I am shocked. It was so embarrassing. I was constantly travelling and wasn’t aware of the emergence of news regarding such illegitimate activities. When I revealed that I was a Telugu actress, I was questioned for 30 minutes.” Many in the fraternity in Hyderabad claimed that they got the first hint that an organized sex racket may be going on in US, and involves a few actresses, about four months ago. That, industry insiders said, was when one actress had returned from a trip to the US and sought to exchange US dollars worth Rs 14 lakhs. “When someone who has had no luck in the

C-grade artistes The racket busted by agencies in the US has also not surprised many actresses in Tollywood, including Sanjjanaa Galrani. She told media that it is not a new thing going in US. She told News18: “Fact is that it is not new thing going in the US. Mostly it is C or D-grade artistes, who are not lead actors but do supporting roles in films… they fall into this trap.” The Chicago scandal has become sensation in Tollywood, across India and in NRI Circles. Many newspapers in Hyderabad have covered the incident in detail. Visa fraud President of TANA Satish Vemana has categorically denied his organization of having any relationship with Kishan or his wife who were allegedly indulging in visa fraud and prostitution racket. On the reports that he was not available to the federal investigators in connection with the present case, Vemana said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had contacted him on May 8, 2018 via an e-mail requesting some assistance with an investigation by Special Agent of DHS in charge of the investigation into the Modugumudis. “Apparently, Federal Investigators tried my telephone earlier and could not leave a voicemail message. I was with a copy of a letter on TANA letterhead with my signature and asked me to verify if it was written by me. I clarified that that the letter in question was not written by me, that my signature was forged in the letter, and that I am not personally acquainted with or had any contact with Kishan Modugumudi or Chandrakala Modugumudi,” he said.

BSC summer picnic delights elders Suresh Iyer is new president of Ekal US BY A STAFF WRITER AKERSFIELD, CA- Suresh Iyer has been named the new president of Ekal Vidyalaya US. His introduction to Ekal was a strange coincidence. In 2002, he was asked by a friend to host its Founder Shyam Gupta in a last- minute change of plans. The conversation between the two turned to Ekal and lasted well into the night, and by morning, Suresh had become a donor. Suresh, the new president of Ekal, gradually became more involved as a volunteer, then became Chapter President, Chairman of the Board until 6 months ago when he assumed the role of president of Ekal Vidyalaya US. After brief stints at Air India and Tata Consultancy Services, US, Suresh started his own company Infospectrum in 2002 based out of Southern California. The Ekal movement started in 1989 with one village and one school. Today, there is an Ekal school in 70,000 villages in India offering free schooling, vocational training, digital competence and agricultural education. Suresh makes it a point to visit a school every time he visits India. If they are excited and curious to meet this visitor from America, he is no less impressed to hear a 6-year-old confidently rattle off the multiplication table of 12. To him, it is proof that Ekal is effective. As president, Suresh is charged about taking Ekal to the next level. The Foundation raised 8 million dollars last year and his goal is to cross 10 million this year. He’s also working on putting a system of Donor communication in place and intends to

There was Bollywood music for entertainment for elders while kids enjoyed games at a nearby fountain and relished donuts. In the afternoon, Cook County Commissioner Tim Snyder and Schaumburg Village Township’s Nimesh Jani joined the seniors and requested them to support him in the forthcoming elections while promising all help to the BSC members. Later, even State Representative Christine Winger arrived at the picnic spot and sought seniors’ votes even as BSC president Hari Patel thanked all guests. strengthen those Ekal Chapters that need a little boost. Three galas for fundraising are being planned for October in New York, Washington and Houston. He reveals that just $365 can support an Ekal school for an entire year. Suresh is clearly thriving on this challenge but admits he couldn’t have done it without his wife Kanaka’s unwavering support, A physician, she held the fort with their two boys while he took on various leadership roles at Ekal. This spirit of service has also passed on to Suresh’s two boys – Vasant and Sumant. Both have interned at Ekal villages and returned with a determination to do more. Vasant presented his thoughts at the Ekal National Conference in 2015 while Sumant is working with the Coimbatore team and Google mapping division to coordinate ways by which Ekal schools can be quickly plotted on google maps.

NJBIZ honors NJ’s Healthcare Heroes BY A STAFF WRITER OMERSET, NJ -- Indian Health Camp of New Jersey (IHCNJ) received the 2018 NJ BIZ Healthcare Heroes Award for the Education Hero in the Organization category. IHCNJ is a non-profit organization providing health screening and disease prevention education and counseling via health fair activities for the past 20 years. To date, under the leadership of its president Dr. Tushar Patel and trustee Dr. Ashok Patel, the organization provided free services to more than 10,000 individuals who are uninsured or under-insured, and detected more than 3,000 chronic diseases abnormalities and provided early intervention to reduce longterm complications and save lives. The Healthcare Heroes finalists were recognized and the winner in each category was announced during an awards breakfast and ceremony on June 19 at The Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset, New Jersey. The honorees were also highlighted in a special supplement to NJBIZ. The award program produced by NJBIZ, New Jersey’s premier business news publication, was sponsored by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, Hackensack Meridian Health, CareOne, McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP, New Jersey Hospital Association, and St. Joseph’s Health.

151-yr wait for Indians for US green card

Balaji Matha Temple’s sixth anniversary

BY A STAFF WRITER AN JOSE, CA -- San Jose, Calif.based Balaji Matha Temple celebrated its sixth anniversary during June 1-3. Narayananda Swamiji, peethadhipati of the temple, started the program on June 1 with ashtottari (108) Kalash Puja in the main temple. He conducted Dwarpuja and Grihapravesh following which the devotees attended the Ganesh Abhishekam and Mahalakshmi Abhishekam ceremony. Amidst Vedic chants, milk, honey, yogurt and other sacred items were poured onto the deities by Swamiji. The devotees chanted Vedic mantras and prayers and sang in adoration of the universal mother, the Shaktisvarupa (power incarnate). This was followed by the Shodashopachara puja and Mangalarati

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -There is a growing wait time for immigrants seeking green cards after their H-1B visa runs out. In order to continue working after an H-1B runs out, foreign citizens may obtain an EB-1 visa for people with “extraordinary” ability, an EB-2 for people with advanced degrees or an EB-3 for bachelor’s degree holders, a Silicon Beat report said. As of mid-April, more than 300,000 Indian immigrants were on EB visas and waiting for green cards, according to a new report from the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. Add in spouses and minor children, and the total number on hold exceeds 600,000 people. The approximately 217,000 Indians on the EB-2 visa for holders of advanced degrees have little reason to hope they’ll ever get a green card, according to Cato’s research, based on federal government data. “At current rates of visa issuances, they will have to wait 151 years for a green card,” Cato reported June 8, the Silicon Valley publication noted. “Obviously, unless the law changes, they will have died or left by that point.” Because each visa category is allotted a minimum of 40,040 green cards, and the share is not adjusted according to demand, and because immigrants from any one country can’t receive more than 7 percent of green cards issued each year, the wait times vary. “The shortest wait is for the highestskilled category for EB-1 immigrants with ‘extraordinary ability,” the think tank reported. “The extraordinary immigrants from India will have to wait ‘only’ six years. EB-3 immigrants—those with bachelor’s degrees—will have to wait about 17 years.” The 1965 legislation that allowed immigrants from any nation to receive up to 7 percent of the green cards issued each year means that Estonians, for example, have a much easier time getting permanent residence than Indians, according to Cato. In related news, Indians account for more than three-fourths of those highlyskilled professionals waiting in queue to obtain legal permanent residence status in the US, or Green Cards. As of May 2018, there were 395,025 foreign nationals waiting for a Green Card under the employment-based preference category. Of these, 306,601 were Indians, according to the latest figures released by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. This does not include counts of dependent beneficiaries associated with the approved immigrant petitions.

and prasad. On the second day, Swamiji sat down with the devotees to conclude the 108 Kalash Puja. After the puja, he did parikrama of the temple grounds with the Mula-Kalash. He then performed a divine Abhishekam of Lord Balaji with the contents of the 108 kalash, and the devotees were blessed with the darshan of Lord Balaji in his Vishvaroop avatar. This was followed by Mangalarati. Swamiji met with the dignitaries, which included Congressman Ro Khanna, state Senator Bob Wieckowski, Assembly Members Ash Kalra and Kansen Chu; Cupertino councilmember Savita Vaidhyanathan, Saratoga councilmember Rishi Kumar, San Jose councilmember Lan Diep, Santa Clara Supervisor Dave Cortese, and Fremont councilmember Raj Salwan. The third day’s celebration started

with a melodious musical program by the students of the Sri Thillai Natya Palli which was followed by bhajans by the students of Sabhalaya Music Academy. Swamiji presided over a Sri Venkateswara, Sridevi, Bhudevi Kalyanam, followed by women performing Abhishekam of the Utsav murtis. The marriage of Sri Venkateswara with Sridevi and Bhudevi was conducted by the attending priests. After the Guru Puja, Vitthaldas Nityananda Swamiji spoke about the significance of guru for the common person, and the providential presence of the temple and Peethadhipati Narayananda Swamiji in everyone’s lives. Narayananda Swamiji gave a brief speech on the motto of the Balaji Temple. Swami ji completed the prayers with Mangalarati, and the celebrations ended with a hearty lunch.

Herpes linked to Alzheimer’s?

TB vaccine may help treat Type-1 diabetes NEW YORK: A vaccine primarily used for treating tuberculosis (TB) may be effective in reducing high blood sugar among people with Type 1 diabetes, results from a clinical trial has revealed. Type - 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produce little or no insulin. The findings, published in the journal npj Vaccine, showed that, three years after receiving two administrations of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine four weeks apart, people with longstanding Type-1 diabetes showed an improvement in HbA1c -- Aglycated haemoglobin -measured to test the overall sugar levels to near normal levels. —IANS

more exposed to disease, males direct their energy towards survival at the cost of testosterone. “Very high and very low testosterone levels can have implications for men’s health and it could be important to know more about men’s childhood circumstances to build a fuller picture of their risk factors,”said Gillian Bentley from Britain’s Durham University. the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The findings also showed multiple points of overlap between virus-host interactions and genes associated with Alzheimer’s risk. In the study, published in the journal Neuron, the team initially performed RNA sequencing on four brain regions in more than 600 samples of postmortem tissue from people with and without Alzheimer’s to quantify which genes were present in the brain, and whether any were associated with the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s. Using different computational approaches, the team uncovered unexpected associations, linking specific viruses with different aspects of Alzheimer’s biology and examined the influence of each virus on specific genes and proteins in brain cells. moved to London as children; Bangladeshi men who moved to London as adults; second-generation, Britain born men whose parents were Bangladeshi migrants; and Britain born ethnic Europeans. The results showed that Bangladeshi men who grew up and lived as adults in Britain had significantly higher levels of testosterone compared to relatively welloff men who grew up and lived in Bangladesh as adults. Bangladeshis in Britain also reached puberty at a younger age and were taller than men who lived in Bangladesh throughout their childhood. The aspects of male reproductive function remain changeable upto the age of 19.

NEW YORK: Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a ‘holy grail’ of insulin in a pill that could help diabetics keep their blood sugar levels in check. For up to 40 million people with Type-1 diabetes worldwide, a painful needle prick once or twice daily is necessary for delivering the insulin that their bodies cannot produce on their own, and failing to adhere to the regimen may lead to poor glycemic control causing serious health complications. The new approach carries insulin in an ionic liquid comprised of choline and geranic acid that is then put inside a capsule with an acid-resistant enteric coating. “Once ingested, insulin must navigate a challenging obstacle course before it can be effectively absorbed into the bloodstream,” said Samir Mitragotri, Professor at the Harvard University. The enteric coating is biocompatible, easy to manufacture, and can be stored for up to two months at room temperature without degrading The findings, published in journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that the oral delivery of insulin could also mitigate many of the disease’s lifethreatening side effects that result from patients failing to give themselves required injections. —IANS

Preschool teachers at higher risk of hearing problems IANS, LONDON

S

even out of 10 female preschool teachers suffer from hearing problems, finds a study that linked the profession with a higher risk than others’ exposed to noise. It is because the preschool teachers are regularly exposed to voices and screams that often convey important information and is difficult to avoid, unlike in an industrial environment, as they have to listen to the children. “Preschool teachers have a much higher risk than those who work in environments with a similar noise rating. The symptoms can be triggered by the boisterous environment, and it’s also difficult to use hearing protection,” Sofie Fredriksson from Sahlgrenska

Preschool teachers are regularly exposed to voices and screams which cannot be avoided as kids have to be heard. (Photo: pexels.com)

Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden said in a statement. “We have an occupational group with much higher risk for these symptoms, and if nothing is done

about it, it’s really alarming,” Fredriksson explained. The findings suggested that hearing loss and tinnitus — sensation of hearing sounds in ears — were the second most common

symptoms that affect the preschool teachers. Among the group of 4,718 women who participated in the study, while 71 percent experienced sound-induced auditory fatigue making them unable to listen to the radio, 46 percent had trouble understanding speech. Similarly, 39 percent of the group said that they experienced discomfort or physical pain in their ears from everyday sounds that are not necessarily loud at all, at least once a week. “Hearing protection devices are normally the main intervention if the sound level cannot be reduced in another way, and it may be necessary if you have a child who subjects your ears to crying for a whole day during their introductory period at preschool,” Fredriksson suggested.
