Paradigm shift in US-India ties Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with US President Obama helped reignite US business interest in India, say experts IANS, NEW DELHI

id Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s summit meeting with US President Barack Obama in September signal a paradigm shift in bilateral ties? Was it a ground-breaking moment in Indo-U.S. ties that had seen a slump over the years? Experts, including former diplomats, do not think it was a paradigm shift, but agree the visit was trend-setting and helped reignite US business interest in India. Former foreign secretary Lalit

Environment Minister meets US delegation

Mansingh, addressing a panel discussion on ‘Modi-Obama Summit: A paradigm shift in India-US Relation’ at the University of Chicago Center on December 8 evening, said that Modi’s visit was trend-setting and helped repair the damage to bilateral relations of the past four years. “The visit brought back the fizz to bilateral relations, and the mood to US business about India,” said Mansingh at the seminar partnered by the Indo-American Friendship Association. He added that around $40 billion worth of transactions were inked following the Modi

visit. According to Mansingh, the “ground-breaking moment” in bilateral ties was the inking of the civil nuclear deal between then prime minister Manmohan Singh and George Bush in June 2005. Veteran journalist and Rajya Sabha member H.K. Dua said, while the Modi invite to Obama to attend the Republic Day Parade next year is a major achievement, the US president would be expecting some returns from India. “Obama would expect, would like India to be generous in climate change, investments in the defense arena,” Dua said.

Man jailed for threatening Gabbard WASHINGTON: A US court has sentenced a New York man to 33 months in prison for making a series of threats against Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Tulsi Gabbad Representatives. Aniruddha Sherbow, 44, had entered a plea of no contest on February 21 in the US District Court to two counts of transmission of threats in interstate commerce, according to an FBI release. Sherbow Judge Reggie B. Walton accepted the plea and sentenced Sherbow on December 8. Walton also ordered Sherbow to pay $538,282 in restitution to the US government, as reimbursement for security expenses.

Three online recruited American teens held while trying to join IS CHICAGO: Three online-recruited teens have been caught while trying to join the terrorist outfit Islamic State (IS), reports The Washington Post. This year alone, officials have detained at least 15 US citizens who were trying to travel to Syria to join the militants, added the report. The girls from suburban Denver in Colorado are two sisters, ages 17 and 15, and their 16-year-old friend of ethnic Somali origin. They were reported missing after they skipped school, but their families were unaware of their whereabouts. Their plan was to fly to Istanbul, then drive into Syria to live in the Islamic homeland, or caliphate, established by

the Islamic State, the militant group that has massacred civilians in Iraq and Syria and beheaded Western journalists and aid workers. The Khan teens, U.S.-born children of Indian immigrants, each left letters for their parents explaining their motives. “An Islamic State has been established and it is thus obligatory upon every able-bodied male and female to migrate there,” Khan wrote. “Muslims have been crushed under foot for too long...... This nation is openly against Islam and Muslims... His sister wrote: “Death is inevitable, and all of the times we enjoyed will not matter as we lay on

our death beds. Death is an appointment.” The Khan teens are part of a growing number of young Americans who are joining or attempting to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the Islamic State, the Post reported.. “Their propaganda is unusually slick. They are broadcasting their poison in something like 23 languages,” FBI Director James B. Comey was quoted as saying, adding that the terrorist group is trying to attract “both fighters and people who would be the spouses ... to their warped world.” A U.S. law enforcement official said authorities had been monitoring the communications of at least one of the teens. —IANS

NATIONAL OUTCRY AGAINST UBER Cab driver with the US-based firm held for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman; Many states ban the service IANS, NEW DELHI

U

S-based online global cab company Uber was in for more trouble Tuesday after Delhi Police slapped a case of cheating and violating lawful orders after one of its drivers was arrested for raping a 25year-old woman business analyst. It also emerged that the driver was involved in two earlier cases of rape and one of molestation. The Delhi government has banned “all activities” by Uber in the national capital and also blacklisted the firm from providing transport services in the city in future. Home Minister Rajnath Singh on December 9 said he has asked state governments and union territories to ban all web-based radio taxis following the rape incident. “The ministry of home affairs has advised the state government and union territories to ensure that the operations of web-based taxi services are stopped and such service providers which are not licensed

with the state governments or union territory administration are prohibited to operate till they get registered themselves with the administration,” Rajnath Singh said in the Rajya Sabha.

Delhi Police cracked down on Uber, filing a case under sections 420 (cheating) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sarai Rohilla police sta-

tion in north Delhi on December 9 The tourism ministry also advised state governments and union territories to deploy ‘tourist police’ for the safety and security of tourists. Many metro cities, including

Bengaluru and Mumbai, are verifying online cab services. The Delhi Commission for Women has issued notice to Uber for laxity in verifying the background of drivers and also asked Delhi Police to submit a report on the rape case. The accused driver, 32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, has also been booked for submitting forged documents to get a permit to ply his cab in the capital. Yadav is accused of raping the woman in his cab while taking her to north Delhi on December 5 night. He was arrested on December 7 from his native place Mathura. Yadav, who is in three-day police custody, has confessed to his crime and told police that he raped the woman after parking his car in a secluded spot beside Zakhira bridge in Delhi. He said the woman kept screaming for help for 30 minutes as he slapped and threatened her.

Kashmiris defy separatist boycott to vote IANS, SRINAGAR

B Opposition wants Parrikar to stop ‘chilling’ in Goa PANAJI: After outrage on the social media, the opposition is protesting against Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s presence at a book release function in Goa, hours after a major terrorist strike in Jammu and Kashmir. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress have asked the former Goa chief minister to safeguard India’s borders and not continue to interfere in state politics as a “Super CM”. Congress leader Durgadas Kamat claims that if an Indian defense minister can spare two days a week “chilling” in Goa, there was something seriously amiss. “Defense minister is a full-time job. The country does not want a parttimer in that position. How can (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, himself a workaholic, allow his defense minister to do such a shoddy, half-hearted

job?” Kamat asks. On Friday evening, hours after suspected militants from the Lashkar-eTaiba attacked an army camp in Baramulla killing eight soldiers and two policemen, Parrikar took time to attend a literary festival held on the outskirts of Panaji. Ever since he was elevated as defense minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government last month, Parrikar, who is synonymous with the BJP in the politically non-significant state, has been visiting Goa two to three days almost every week. BJP sources told IANS that Parrikar was in the process of establishing a camp office in Panaji, where he is expected to spend two days each week to oversee political as well as administrative matters in Goa.

raving the freezing cold and defying a call by separatist groups to boycott assembly polls, 58 percent of voters in Jammu and Kashmir on December 9 turned up to cast their ballot in the third round of the staggered elections. “There was incident-free polling in all 16 constituencies. Around 58 percent of voters cast their ballot. The percentage is likely to go up when the final figures arrive,” state Chief Electoral Officer Umang Narula said at a media conference. Out of 8,441 Kashmiri Pandit voters, 55 percent exercised their franchise, he said. The highest turnout of 82.74

percent was recorded in Chrar-iSharief, while the lowest of 30 percent was seen in Sopore. Uri recorded 79 percent, Rafiabad 53, Sangrama 56.15, Baramulla 45, Gulmarg 72, Pattan 60, Chadoora 65, Badgam 70, Beerwah 74, Khansahib 73, Tral 37.68, Pampore 46.48, Pulwama 38.31, and Rajpora 47.07.

Balloting took place after a string of terror attacks Dec 5 left 21 people, including eight soldiers, dead in Kashmir. Voters trickled out in the morning at almost all polling stations to elect their representatives for the 16 assembly segments despite the freezing cold that gripped Kashmir. As the day progressed and the sun peeped out, more voters thronged the polling booths. The electorate comprised 717,049 males, 650,476 females and 23 third-gender voters. Long queues of enthusiastic voters in Kramshore village of Khansahib constituency seemed determined to choose their representatives, and completely ignored the separatist call to stay away from voting.

US Senate confirms new envoy for India Rahul Richard Verma will be the first Indian American to hold the office of US Ambassador in New Delhi ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON:

T

he U.S. Senate has confirmed Richard Rahul Verma, President Barack Obama's nominee to be the next American ambassador to India, making him the first IndianAmerican envoy in New Delhi. Verma, 46, a former key aide to then secretary of state Hillary Clinton, was approved by the Senate by a unanimous voice vote on December 9, signifying the bipartisan support for better India-US relations. He is expected to take up his position in New Delhi before Obama's visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day, the first US president to get the honor. At his confirmation hearing last week, Verma told the Senate Foreign Relations committee that Obama's “historic visit to India in January” will build on “Modi's highly successful visit to the United States this past September.” “There is no question that this is a defining and exciting time in the US-India relationship,” he said. “There's little doubt the relationship has been reenergized, with renewed enthusiasm to take our partnership to the next level.” Verma, whose parents immigrated from India in the sixties also acknowledged the contribution of

immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and vowed to “strive to live up to the high standards they have set.”

The post has been vacant since the previous ambassador quit in May. They “took a chance like my parents, who worked hard, who continue to pursue their dreams, and along the way have helped ensure India and the United States become the closest of friends and partners,” he told the panel.

Currently Verma is a senior counsellor at Steptoe & Johnson law firm and the Albright Stonebridge Group, a business advisory company, led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011. The New Delhi post has been vacant since the previous ambassador Nancy Powell quit in May after India-US ties hit a low after a major diplomatic spat over the December arrest and strip search of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York.

Scientist Arun Majumdar named US science envoy WASHINGTON: Dr. Arun Majumdar, an Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay alumni is among four eminent scientists chosen to serve as US Science Envoys beginning in January, 2015. Majumdar, a professor at Stanford University and an expert in energy, climate change, and innovation was named by the State Department along with Dr. Peter Hotez, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, and Dr. Geri Richmond. Majumdar, who graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the IIT, Bombay in 1985, he is a member of the US delegation for the US-India Track II dialogue on climate change and energy. In October 2009, President Barack Obama named him as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency — Energy (ARPA-E). Announced by Obama in Cairo in June 2009, the U.S. Science Envoy program demonstrates the US' commitment to science, technology, and innovation as tools of diplomacy and economic growth, the State Department said.

“Like their nine predecessors, these distinguished scientists will engage internationally at the citizen and government and advise the White House, the State Department and the scientific community about potential opportunities for cooperation.” Currently Arun Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Professor at Stanford University. Prior to joining Stanford, he was the Vice President for Energy at Google, where he created several energy technology initiatives and advised the company on its broader energy strategy.

US Senate report slams CIA for detainees’ torture WASHINGTON: A scathing Senate report on December 9 slammed the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for its “brutal” interrogations of terrorist detainees during the Bush era, saying they delivered no “ticking time bomb” information that prevented an attack. The majority report issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee also accused the spy agency of routinely misleading the White House and the Congress about the information it obtained from the detention and interrogation of terrorism suspects. The interrogation techniques branded by critics as torture — deployed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack were “deeply flawed” and often resulted in “fabricated” information, according to the report. Based on more than six million internal agency documents, the report said detainees were deprived of sleep for as long as a week. N nation to undertake the difficult task of examining its conscience. “There's controversy in terms of the details, but what's not controversial is the fact that we did some things that violated who we are as a people,” US President Barack Obama said in an interview with Telemundo and Univision television stations, after the details of the report were made public this week. “This is not how Americans should behave. Ever,” wrote The Washington Post in its editorial titled “The horrors in America's 'dungeon' should never have happened”. “Torture is wrong, whether or not it has ever 'worked'. As an Obama administration official said Tuesday, 'The reason we prohibited these techniques is because they are contrary to our values',” it added.

ew Delhi’s ban on the U.S. based ride-sharing service Uber following the rape of woman passenger by one of its drivers has focused attention on the fights it’s engaged in with local governments around the world, including in San Francisco where it was accused of misleading customers into believing they banned drivers with criminal backgrounds. “It’s not the first time that Uber drivers have been accused of sexual assault,” noted the Time magazine. The ride-sharing service has also faced bans at one point or another in cities across the world, and many disputes with authorities remain unsettled, it said. The “war chest” of the $41.2 billion San Francisco-based company doing business in 45 countries, “will come in handy” in these battles, Time suggested. In San Francisco and Los Angeles, district attorneys have accused the ride-sharing service of misleading customers into believing they ban drivers who have ever committed criminal offenses, the newsmagazine

Time listed at least five places where Uber is facing government pushback. In Portland, Oregon, Uber began operating illegally on Friday 5 night and could face penalties, according to the city’s transportation bureau. A court challenge against Uber in the Netherlands resulted this week in an injunction against the ridesharing service, with a court saying the company can’t work with drivers who don’t have a license, Time said.

In September, courts in Berlin and Hamburg ruled the company did not comply with German laws and officially banned the service from using unlicensed taxi drivers, according to the magazine. In Toronto, Canada, authorities argued last month that Uber is “jeopardizing public safety” and is getting ready to fight the ride-sharing service in court. Uber halted operations in Nevada after it issued a ban against the service last week.

‘Indian fishermen will be released by Bangladesh soon’

JHARKHALI (WEST BENGAL): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 8 said she has written to the Centre to facilitate talks with Bangladesh for ensuring the return of Indian fishermen who had unknowingly entered the neighboring country’s territory. Banerjee said fishermen from the Sunderbans region, who are in custody of Bangladesh authorities for straying across the boundary, will return home soon. “Since there were some changes in the boundary recently, the fishermen were unaware. I have written to the Centre to initiate discussions with the Bangladesh government,” she said. Earlier, two Bangladeshi fishing boats, with 56 fishermen on board, were apprehended for illegally fishing in Indian waters off the West Bengal coast, officials said on December 7.

OSLO: Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for refusing to quit school, and received their Nobel Peace Prizes on December 10 after two days of celebration honouring their work for children's rights. Malala became by far the youngest laureate, widely praised for her global campaigning since she was shot in the head on her school bus in 2012. Some groups in Pakistan, however, have accused her of being a puppet of the West and violating the tenets of conservative Islam. “I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not,” said Malala, 17, better known by her first name, which is also the title of her book and the name of her foundation. “It is the story of many girls,” she said in Oslo's ornate city hall on the anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's death. Although the focus was undoubtedly on Oslo, Nobel Prize winners in literature, chemistry, physics, medicine and economics were gathering in Stockholm, due to receive their prizes from the King of Sweden later in the day.

Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labor sometimes in violent confrontations, kept a modest profile in Oslo. “I've lost two of my colleagues,” Satyarthi said about his work. “Carrying the dead body of a colleague who is fighting for the protection of children is something I'll never forget, even as I sit here to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.” Arriving in Norway with friends and young activists Malala met children, walked the streets to greet supporters and will open an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. “She's very brave and tough, fighting even after the Taliban shot her in the head,” said Andrea, 12, who was among thousands of children hoping to greet Malala in downtown Oslo.

Vaiko’s MDMK quits NDA

The Tamil party was not happy with BJP’s Sri Lanka as well as language policy IANS, CHENNAI

T

he MDMK party led by Vaiko on December 8 announced its decision to quit the BJP-led alliance to protest against the government’s stand on Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu’s water row with Kerala and Karnataka. A high level committee of the Tamil Nadu-based party passed a resolution to this effect at a meeting here. The MDMK said that when it joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party made it clear that the BJP-led government should not support Sri Lanka and its President Mahinda Rajapaksa. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had gone against the earlier promise and started supporting the Rajapaksa government, it said. The MDMK, which has no

The special court for economic offenses sentenced Ramalinga Raju, his brother and then managing director of the company, B. Rama Raju and two others to six months imprisonment in six of the seven cases filed by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO). The court also fined 11 individuals for amounts ranging from `10000 to `26.6 million. The highest fine was imposed on Krishna G. Palepu, who was

tor Ram Mynampati were sentenced to imprisonment and fined while other former directors were fined `20,000 each in a complaint. The SFIO had filed complaints against the accused on various charges including fudging of balance sheets, deceiving shareholders and taking huge benefits and dividends as directors. The court struck down the case related to the company showing non-existing profit of `17.16 billion. The special court is likely to deliver on December 23 the much-awaited judgment in the case filed by the CBI in what is billed as the country’s biggest accounting fraud which shocked the corporate world in 2009.

tral government was betraying the interests of Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar dam row with Kerala and on the sharing of Cauvery river water with Karnataka. Vaiko’s party complained that the central government had also failed to help the fishing community in Tamil Nadu vis-a-vis attacks and arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy. Although the MDMK’s exit will in no way affect the central government, it becomes the first party to quit the BJP-led alliance since Modi took power in May this year. As long-standing supporter of the vanquished Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, Vaiko had recently criticized Modi for warming up to President Rajapaksa. On November 26, the MDMK took a leading part in celebrating the 60th birth anniversary of the slain Tamil Tigers leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, all over Tamil Nadu.

‘Congress can retain power in Kerala’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: L There is “a sense of confidence” in the Congress party in Kerala that it can retain power in the next assembly polls, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said on December 10. Addressing party Rahul Gandhi leaders at the state party headquarters here, Gandhi expressed confidence that his party can do well both in the next year’s elections to the local bodies and the state assembly polls in 2016. “The state government and the party are doing a commendable job. There is a sense of confidence that the Congress party can do well in these two elections, but a lot of work has to be done,” said Gandhi. Gandhi arrived in the capital city to take part in the valedictory function of the Janapaksha Yatra of state party chief V.M. Shutdown, protests mark 22nd Babri demolition anniversary IANS, HYDERABAD

A

shutdown, protests and meetings marked the 22nd anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, which passed off peacefully on December 6 in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. A shutdown was observed in parts of Hyderabad on a call given by some Muslim groups to demand reconstruction of the demolished mosque at its original site in Ayodhya. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions were closed and vehicles were off the roads in the old city and other Muslim-majority areas as police

stepped up security to prevent any untoward incident. The usual hustle bustle around historic Charminar was missing while the roads in the centuries-old

markets wore a deserted look. Shops downed the shutters in response to the shutdown call given by the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Majlis Bachao

Tehreek (MBT) and other groups. Police arrested few youngsters, who tried to take out a rally defying the ban orders in Moghalpura near Charminar. The youth were raising slogans in support of their demand for reconstruction of the mosque. Over 5,000 policemen and personnel from paramilitary forces were deployed in different parts of the city. Special security measures were taken near historic Makkah Masjid. A tight vigil was maintained across the old city as the attempts to take out rallies by some organisations and also celebration of Vijay Diwas by some others led to violence in the past. A police officer said the afternoon prayers passed off peacefully.

A film with all three Khans ‘Action Jackson’: A tale so shallow would be exciting: Aamir MUMBAI: Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan says a project starring Bollywood's three Khans — Shah Rukh, Salman and himself, would be exciting and that he would be happy to do it. The trio recently appeared together on the same stage. Asked about any plans to work with Salman and Shah Rukh in one film, Aamir said: “I really think a film with three of us would be exciting...and if ever a script, which appeals to three of us, comes up, I am sure we would be happy to do it.” Aamir, who is currently busy promoting his much awaited film PK, says he has neither signed any new films nor is he going to do his TV show Satyameva Jayate next year. “I'm not doing Satayamev Jayate next year, and currently, I am not doing any films. I am currently reading scripts and deciding on what to do next.”

Film: ‘Action Jackson’; Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Introducing Manasvi Mamgai, and a cast of henchmen in orange suits; Directed by Prabhudheva; Rating: ** 1/2 (2 and a half stars)

O

fficially, there are two comic relief providing actors in Action Jackson. The very talented Kunal Roy Kapoor, here reduced playing the hero’s cretinous sidekick whose sides get kicked in every frame, and Sonakshi Sinha who spends a good part of the first-half ogling at her leading man's power-point... and we don't mean his fists which speak louder than his words.... really, loud. Decibels are so high, they could split eardrums provided you can stay put in your seat through the ordeal. The very talented Sandeep Chowta provides helpful pointers in the background score: ‘Vishy Vishya’ goes the score when Devgn is on the screen. Bangkok Bangkok is the chant on the soundtrack for those

which seems to have been scribbled on a series of paper napkins in crowded cafe where fights often break out, quite like the ones we see break out in the public places in Prabhudheva's designer-inanity. Admittedly Devgn fights much better than he dances. This is akin to saying Tendulkar plays cricket much better than kabbaddi. So far Prabhudheva's films may have been guilty of strutting a lowbrow idiom as an antidote to highbrow tedium.

Chitrangada Singh won’t go bald for fun

moves on to next generation of co-stars

NEW DELHI: At a time when actors are leaving no stone unturned to portray their onscreen character with conviction, actress Chitrangada Singh says she won’t shave off her tresses for any role, but only for something meaningful. “I have cut my hair for a role in a movie where I played a corporate person. But I won’t go bald for fun. The role has to be that good and exciting. It has to be amazing and different,” the actor told IANS over phone from Mumbai. Chitrangada has maintained a likeable blend between serious and commercial cinema with movies like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Desi Boyz, Inkaar and I, Me Aur Main. “For me, oiling has always been very important. I make it a point to do it twice a month,” she said.

MUMBAI: Having worked with most of the A-listers from her own generation of actors, including Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt has now moved to the next elder generation. In her next two releases, to be directed by Vikas Bahl and Ayan Mukerjee, Alia is paired with Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, respectively. Though she is tight-lipped about the project with Sushant Singh Rajput to be directed by Homi Adjania, Alia happily admits to being part of Mukerjee's next film starring his best friend Ranbir who has featured in both the directors' films so far — Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. “The only project I am officially part of is the film directed by Ayan with Ranbir in the lead,” she said.

I’m not insecure: Anushka Sharma MUMBAI: Actor Anushka Sharma, who is part of Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, says that she is not insecure working in the multi-starrer as the role matters more to her than anything else. The film also features Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Anil Kapoor, among others. “I guess I am not insecure as a person. In fact when Zoya offered me this role, she thought I will not take up. Priyanka’s role is bigger in the film but I think the film matters (to me). I said yes to Zoya the moment I heard the role,” she said.

Everything I do is unique:

Priyanka

NEW DELHI: :At the peak of her career, Bollywood’s marquee actress Priyanka Chopra changed track to explore the world of music — only to emerge as a winner. And now she has ventured into film production. Describing her activities as “unique”, she said she doesn’t follow a path but creates her own. “I am not an ordinary star. Everything I do is sort of unique and I hate being clubbed as ‘oh celebrities’,” Priyanka told IANS in an interview. “I have a very unique personality. I like to do things which I want to do. But everything that I have done has been very unique to me. I don’t follow a path, I create my own,” Priyanka added.

‘Link-up rumors common for actors’ MUMBAI: Actor Arjun Kapoor says linking up with co-stars are the part and parcel of an actor’s life and he is not the only one who is targeted with such reports. The actor is rumoured to be dating his Tevar co-star Sonakshi Sinha but he has a different story to tell. “These things (link-up reports) are part and parcel of an actor’s life. I am not the first actor to be linked with his co-star and I am definitely not going to be the last,” said the actor. “We both (Sonakshi and Arjun) are not influenced by these rumours.”

SEC CHARGES INDIAN IN STOCK SCAM

P

BY A STAFF WRITER

A LO A LTO ( C A ) - - T h e US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on December 2 charged an Indian American and former resident of Palo Alto, Calif., with fraudulently selling shares of stock in a privately-held company when he actually purchased the shares for others a few years before. Vinay Kumar Nevatia, 46, lived in Palo Alto from at least 2004 through 2013, and used aliases including Vinay Kumar, Vinay Nevatia, Vinay Nivatia, Vinay K. Kumar, Kumar K., Vinay Kumar Srinivasan, Vinay Srinivasan, and Kumar Mangalam Kumar, according to the SEC complaint. In mid-2008, he raised money from eight investors in the US to purchase shares of stock in CSS Corp. Technologies (Mauritius) Ltd., which he told prospective investors was “an exclusive pre-IPO opportunity,” the SEC plaint said. In August 2008, he and eight other investors paid nearly $900,000 for 179,900 shares of CSS through VRSBS Investment LLC, an entity he formed to buy the shares.

Indian abortion doc is finally hauled up

Dr Nareshkumar Patel

BY A STAFF WRITER

W

ARR ACRES (OK) -- A longtime abortion doctor was arrested on December 9 at his clinic, Outpatient Services for Women. Dr. Nareshkumar Patel, 62, is accused of obtaining money by false pretenses. His arrest was the result of an undercover investigation initiated by the Oklahoma attorney general’s office. Patel has been the center of controversy repeatedly since getting his medical license in Oklahoma in May 1984. In 1992, he was the focus of national attention for burning 55 aborted fetuses in a rural area east of Shawnee. He was not disciplined or charged for his action. Patel told the state medical board he and his office manager took the fetuses to an abandoned recreational vehicle park he owned near Shawnee and he set fire to them on a gravel road.

Vinay Kumar Nevatia

Kumar bought just three per cent of the shares which did not identify the seller of the shares. In late 2008, Kumar delivered certificates to investors representing their shares of stock, the complaint said. But in November 2011, he allegedly resold about half the CSS shares held by original

investors to three unidentified directors of a venture capital firm in San Mateo. The directors agreed to pay VRSBS $359,800 for 89,950 shares. “Kumar concealed the ownership interests of the original investors and falsely told the directors that the shares were ‘his shares,” the SEC complaint said. Kumar allegedly had the three directors wire payments to a personal trust bank account held in Kumar’s name, rather than to the VRSBS bank account, but never transferred the proceeds to VRSBS. In February 2012, Kumar allegedly resold an additional 25,000 CSS shares to two directors of the same VC firm for $100,000 and resold 60,000 shares for $195,000 to a Cayman Islands private equity fund. Kumar concealed this sale also from original investors and “misappropriated the proceeds from the fraudulent sales,” the SEC alleges. In July 2013, some original investors learned from CSS that Kumar had fraudulently sold nearly all of their CSS shares. When they confronted Kumar, he “tried to keep his scheme going by falsely

23

claiming that he had not actually sold the shares, but only temporarily ‘transferred’ them to protect them from Kumar’s creditors,” the complaint said. After August 2013, Kumar allegedly stopped responding to investors. The SEC issued a summons for Kumar at his address in Palo Alto, but his whereabouts are unknown. The SEC is seeking disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, interest and penalties. A firm controlled by Kumar, KBR Capital Markets, was registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, but had its membership canceled in September for failure to meet qualification requirements. This firm was not named as a defendant in the complaint. Kumar was not registered individually with the authority or the SEC. “Kumar portrayed himself as a legitimate investment professional when he was actually double-dealing stock shares and pocketing the money for himself,” said Jina L. Choi, director of the SEC’s San Francisco regional office.

HEALTH COVERAGE--400 PLANS ON OFFER BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- Illinois residents have more choices that could lead to lower costs, and may result in better coverage, but they will have to do some homework to be sure they are selecting the best plan for their needs. Here are five things people should keep in mind: 1. December 15 is the deadline to renew or sign up for coverage for the first time and start the New Year with a new health plan. It is the last day Illinois’s uninsured can enroll to get coverage that starts on January 1. 2. New insurance plans are available in the marketplace from some of the top carriers in the state. With more than 400 plans available (versus 165 last year), residents have more choices available, which makes it quite possible that a new plan will be a better solution.

3. Your cost may have changed for 2015. Even if you are happy with your plan from last year, you should review your options to see if your rates or the amount of financial help you qualify for will change in January. 4. You may miss out on a better deal and cost savings if you do nothing and are auto-renewed into the same plan. Experts say that most consumers will be able to buy a plan at a lower cost than they paid in 2014 if they shop around. 5. You don’t have to do it alone. Free inperson assistance from hundreds of trained

professionals is available throughout the state. Get Covered Illinois is extending hours and in-person appointments are available to help consumers before the deadline. “December 15 is a critical date, as it is the last day the uninsured can choose a new plan that begins on January 1,” said Jennifer Koehler, director of Get Covered Illinois. “It’s also important for those who are planning to renew their coverage as it is the last day to choose a new plan or face the possibility of being automatically reenrolled in their current plan--a plan that may no longer be the best for their needs.” Get Covered Illinois is hosting enrollment events and extending hours at locations leading up to the December 15 deadline. For a complete list of locations, one may visit GetCoveredIllinois.gov or call 866-311-1119 to schedule an appointment or to find help nearby.

PCS STANDS OUT IN MCDONALD’S PARADE

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) -- The Punjabi Cultural Society (PCS) of Chicago kept up its tradition of participating in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade held on Thanksgiving Day on November 27 on State Street in the heart of downtown Chicago. Despite the freezing cold weather, diehard PCS members in ethnic costumes Achkan, Kurta Pajama and Lehnga Choli actively participated in the grand procession. The parade started with a performance from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in front of Macy’s as millions watched from across the country. Celebrating its 81st year, the McDonald’s® Thanksgiving Parade is the biggest parade in Chicago and the city’s premier holiday event. This colorful procession of more than 100 units consisting of giant helium balloons, remarkable floats representing many cultures and organizations, 23 high school marching bands, equestrian units, unique performance groups, and celebrities made their way down State Street marching North from Congress to Randolph to kick off the holiday season. The lineup included 2014 grand

AITHERSBURG (MD) -- A twin-engine plane crashed into a house in a Gaithersburg, Maryland, subdivision on the morning of December 8, killing three people in the aircraft as well as two small children and a 36-yearold woman in the residence. The bodies of the woman and two children — a 3-year-old and an infant — were found in the second floor of one of the houses struck by the plane, according to Montgomery County Police Chief Chris Manger. He said it appeared the woman is the children’s mother. Her 5-yearold daughter went to school Monday morning and was reportedly safe, while the father, Kenneth, was not home when the crash happened. One of the people killed on the plane was Michael Rosenberg, CEO and founder of Health Decisions, a North Carolina clinical development company. The crash occurred about 10:44 a.m. Monday as the twin-engine Embraer EMB-500/Phenom 100 made an instrument approach to Montgomery County Airport.

eople who adopt a healthy lifestyle in their teenage years face a significantly reduced risk of contracting heart diseases, says a new research. Maintaining a healthy heart while young may help prevent future disease and disability, the findings showed. “People should adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle at all ages, especially young,” said Thanh Huyen T. Vu, research assistant professor at Northwestern University in the US. A healthy lifestyle has been shown to be associated with favourable levels of cardio-vascular disease risk factors. In the study spanning more than

three decades, participants who were at low risk of heart and blood vessel disease as young adults were found 60 percent less likely to report disability as older adults. To determine risk level, researchers used blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index measurements, as well as diabetes and smoking status. The study involved data from

to a heart attack. Atherosclerosis is the disease process that causes plaque build-up in the arteries, which narrows them and restricts blood flow. “If you’re hanging out in a room where people are smoking a lot of marijuana, you may be harming your blood vessels,” said senior author of the study Matthew Springer, associate professor of Medicine at the University of California in the US. “There is no reason to think marijuana smoke is better than tobacco smoke. Avoid them both,” Springer added. In the study, blood vessel function in lab rats dropped to 70 percent after 30 minutes of exposure to second-hand marijuana smoke.

3,669 men and 2,345 women. Participants were aged 29-68 when the study began in 1967 to 1973. The researchers co-related the data to the participants’ responses to a 2003 health survey about functional disability and quality of life. The findings were presented at the “American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2014” in Chicago, Illinois.

tweets has been developed by computer scientists at Johns Hopkins University in the US. “We are not aiming to replace the long-standing survey methods of tracking mental illness trends,” said senior research scientist Glen Coppersmith, who has played a key role in the project. “We, however, believe our new techniques could complement that process. We are trying to show that analysing tweets could uncover similar results but could do so more quickly and at a much lower cost,” Coppersmith added. Their analysis indicated that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was more prevalent at military installations that frequently deployed during the

Asthma may significantly raise heart attack risk IANS, NEW YORK

NEW YORK: Too much salt in one’s diet increases the risk of contracting kidney problems, says a new research. The researchers found high sodium intake (an average of 4.7g a day) is linked with an increased risk of needing dialysis, but no benefit was seen for low sodium intake. “Our findings show that the consumption of a healthy diet may protect from future major renal events,” said Andrew Smyth from the National University of Ireland, Galway.

sthma patients need to take extra care of their heart as researchers have found that the affliction, which requires daily medication, may raise the risk of a heart attack by 60 percent. “Physicians should do all they can to control every other modifiable cardiovascular risk factor in patients with asthma,” said study author Matthew Tattersall, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health in the US. After adjustment for heart disease risk factors, researchers found that people with asthma, who

Your week ahead... Aries After the pressures you have had to deal with since late October you can now move onto the next stage of giving consideration to priorities that should take precedence during the next 2 years.

Taurus Applying determination to anything you have little choice but to be responsible for will pay dividends until mid January. Your view of the future can begin to have a greater sense of optimism from this week.

Gemini You could feel invisible this week when it comes to gaining appreciation from others or any form of recognition for what you have done. It might be what you need to rethink your position with them.

recent Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and signs of depression were more evident in locations with higher unemployment rates. While neither of these findings is surprising, analysis of Twitter posts could become a useful yardstick in quickly measuring mental health trends, particularly after events such as natural disasters and military conflicts. The computer algorithms used to discover mental health data from tweets look for words and language patterns associated with these ailments, including word cues linked to anxiety and insomnia.

Cancer Dealings with other people will still maintain a strong focus though this week more pleasant interaction and willingness from others can come into play. Those who are determined to have control will now begin to hide them.

Leo You come to a turning point this week in the new 12-year cycle you began in mid July. Reflect, from now to early March, upon where you are at and what you must change about yourself for better tomorrow.

Virgo There can be conflict this week between what you want to do for yourself and habit patterns that are already in place, particularly within a family situation. Be careful about letting things nag at you to mid January.

required daily medications were 60 percent more likely to have a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack, stroke or related condition during a 10-year follow-up than people without asthma. Researchers found that asthma and heart disease are associated with increased levels of inflammation in the body. The study was presented at the ongoing American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions.

(December 14-19) Libra You can begin to relax when it comes to matters you have had to restructure since late October. It all moves to an easier stage from now to mid January, opening up opportunities for greater enjoyment.

Scorpio You have likely considered many options since late October. Now you need to move towards putting the foundation in place for what you want to bed down over the next 2 years. Aim to be convivial in conversations to early January..

Sagittarius Someone is under your influence more than you realize. They are likely having difficulty in determining what your aims are in the long term. This does not necessarily mean you have to spell out your thoughts or position.

Capricorn Venus, the planet of pleasure, peace and balance moves into your sign this week where it will remain until 4th January. This will encourage you to enjoy yourself as well as generate much social activity.

Aquarius You have begun a new 2-year personal cycle with Mars now in your sign, where it will remain until January 12. Your energy level should pick up as well as your self confidence. A turning point with others.

Pisces Your energy level will likely be low from now to mid January — this is a time where you need to ensure you get plenty of rest. You need to find time to turn your energies towards contemplating your position.

ime was when most high-end eateries in this suburb of the national capital were concentrated in Sector 18, but that’s slowly changing. Welcome to the newlyopened Tawak in Sector 63, an eclectic combination of office and apartment blocks that takes you on a wonderous Indo-Oriental culinary journey. “Tawak (Sanskrit for cinnamon) has been one of the most revered and traded spices since ancient times. Ours is an endeavour to take you on a stimulating journey across Asia to experience the rich diversity in flavors of the Indian and Oriental cuisines,” cofounder Deepankar Arora said as he served the cucumber afterwork welcome drink. Light on the palette, the drink came in a mason jar with a huge slice of cucumber adorning the side. “We have different glasses for different drinks,” explained the 33-year-old Arora, a quintessential “Purani Dilli” boy who studied at St. Xavier’s and was previously the executive chef at Mum-
