terrorist ploughed with his truck through a crowd of thousands enjoying Bastille Day celebration in this French city mowing down at least 84 people, injuring some 150 -- 18 critically, and numbing France. In what President Francois Hollande said was an attack of a “terrorist character”, the heavy duty

white truck drove into the crowd for two long kilometers an hour before midnight on July 14, crushing unsuspecting people before police shot dead the 31 years old driver. Both French citizens and tourists had massed along the pavement of the Boulevard des Anglais, the main street in Nice, to enjoy July 14 music event as well as fireworks when the disaster struck, French media reported.

Government evacuates Indians from South Sudan THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eightyfive Indians, including 46 Keralites, evacuated from strife-torn South Sudan arrived here by a special Indian Air Force aircraft on July 15. Among those rescued from the conflict zone were also two Nepalese nationals, seven women and three children. A total of 156 Indians were evacuated in two C 17 Globemaster flights of the Indian Air Force, one of which landed in Delhi carrying 71 Indians. The Kerala government has made special arrangements for the onward journey of the persons belonging to other southern states who landed here early in the morning. Anil Kumar, one of those who returned here, told reporters that firing had intensified in South Sudan early this week. “For almost five days there was heavy firing and it was then that we decided to return. Yesterday it was a quiet day, that made our movement to the airport easy,” said Anil Kumar. Another relieved Keralite said that it was pretty scary in South Sudan where clashes between rival factions have broken out. “Right in front of our gate one person was shot dead and many of us thought that we will never see our homeland again. There was heavy fir-

WASHINGTON: The world reacted with shock and horror at the “terror” attack in Nice, France, where a truck mowed into a crowd of Bastille Day revellers killing at least 80 people. It is the second major terror attack in France after the November 2015 attacks in Paris. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack and said: “India shares the pain and stands firmly with our French sisters

and brothers in this hour of immense sadness,” Modi said. US President Barack Obama said, “We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.” US Secretary of State John Kerry, condemning the attack, said the US will provide France with whatever support is needed. Republican presumptive presiden-

tial nominee Donald Trump tweeted: “Another horrific attack, this time in Nice. Many dead and injured. When will we learn? It is only getting worse.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “Canadians are shocked by tonight’s attack in Nice. Our sympathy is with the victims, and our solidarity with the French people.” The United Nations condemned what it termed a “barbaric and cowardly” terror attack in Nice.

Besides driving over people, the killer — believed to be French citizen of Tunisian origin who France24 channel said was known to police but not to intelligence agencies — fired at the crowd. Firearms, explosives and grenades were found in the truck, regional President Christian Estrosi said. The identity papers of a French-Tunisian were found in the truck, police said. It was the worst terror attack in

France since terrorists struck in Paris in November 2015, killing 130 people and injuring over 250 near a stadium. Hollande extended the state of Emergency in France for three more months beyond July 26 and called in the reservists. In the footage captured by terrified bystanders the sound of several gunshots being fired could be heard. Shocked witnesses said they watched the gory scene in

disbelief and horror. “We see this truck along the boardwalk, just ploughing through people, bodies getting hit and people running in all the directions,” Tony Molina, who viewed it all from his apartment, told CNN. He said following the crash, there was a barrage of gunfire. “There were families just lying down, crying next to these bodies.”

hina on July 12 suffered a major diplomatic blow when an international tribunal ruled it violated the Philippines’ rights in the South China Sea. Beijing refused to accept the verdict, calling it “null and void”. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague accused China of interfering with the Philippines’ fishing and petroleum exploration, building artificial islands in the waters and failing to prevent Chi-

ing and for four days we were inside our home, without coming out even once,” said another relieved Keralite. “We are thankful to the government and the Indian embassy there which rose to the occasion and acted. The present situation is due to the differences of opinion that have broken out between two tribes in Sudan. If things are back to normal there, I wish to return,” said another Keralite. The evacuation of Indians from the African country was part of the ‘Operation Sankat Mochan’ initiated by the Indian government and was led by Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh.

nese fishermen from fishing in the zone, media reports said. The tribunal held that fishermen from the Philippines had traditional fishing rights in Scarborough Shoal in the

South China Sea, and that China had interfered with these rights by restricting their access. The court held that Chinese law enforcement vessels unlawfully created a serious risk of collision when they physically obstructed Philippine vessels in the region, the South China Morning Post reported. The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Karimata and Malacca Straits to the Straits of Taiwan, of around 3.5 million sq km.

Have open hearts: Obama The US President calls on the country to confront racism and at the mean time support the ordinary Americans IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama on July 12 called on protesters, police and the public to open their hearts and drop their preconceptions to deal with racism and violence in the country. At a memorial service held in the Texas city of Dallas to honor five police officials killed on July 7 by a lone gunmen Micah Johnson, Obama lamented a flood of guns in cities, and a glaring and chronic mistrust between the police and citizens, Xinhua news agency reported. The five officials were killed because Johnson was upset about the fatal police shootings of two black men in the states of Louisiana and Minnesota. The gunmen opened fire at the end of a

BRIEFS: US concerned over Kashmir killings WASHINGTON: The US has voiced concern over the ongoing violence in the Kashmir Valley that has claimed 30 lives, but has made it clear that it is India’s affair. “Obviously, we’re concerned about the violence,” US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in his daily press briefing on , July 11. “We encourage all sides to make efforts towards finding a peaceful resolution,” he said, adding, “This is really a matter for the Government of India to speak to specifically, and I’d refer you to them for more comment.

Majority in US prefer state power over federal WASHINGTON: Majority of the Americans or 55 per cent, favour power that was concentrated in state governments, outnumbering the 37 per cent who favour federal power, a new poll revealed. The result came as nearly half of the 50 US states were suing the federal government over its directive to allow transgender students to use bathrooms according to what gender they feel they are, rather than their actual physical gender, the Gallup poll issued on July 11 said. The current lawsuit over transgender bathrooms is one of many battles US states have fought against President Barack Obama’s administration, Xinhua news agency reported.

peaceful Black Lives Matter-organized protest in Dallas. Obama called on the country to confront racism and at the mean time support the ordinary Americans. He encouraged police and the public to acknowledge and confront the implications of

entrenched institutional racism, while also demanding respect for police and the role they play. “The deepest fault lines of our democracy have suddenly been exposed, perhaps even widened,” he said. “Faced with such violence, we wonder if racial divides can ever

be bridged.” Calling the shootings of the police officials an act of demented violence and racial hatred, Obama offered empathy to those who view police with suspicion, and to those who view anti-police protesters as disruptive and disrespectful. Obama said race relations had improved dramatically in his lifetime, adding that those who deny it were dishonoring the struggles that helped them achieve that progress. “But America, we know that bias remains. We know it. Don’t dismiss peaceful protesters as troublemakers or paranoid.” Meanwhile, former US President George W. Bush, now a Dallas resident, also attended the service and urged Americans to reject the unity of grief and fear.

US attorney general defends decision IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Attorney General Loretta Lynch on July 12 steadfastly defended her decision not to charge Hillary Clinton in her email investigation, but also refused to discuss details of the case despite Congressional Republicans’ grilling. “I accepted that (FBI) recommendation. I saw no reason not to accept it,” said Lynch here at a House Judiciary Committee hearing. “The matter was handled like any other matter,” she added. After a year-long federal investigation into whether Clinton had mishandled classified information during her stint in the US State

Department, FBI Director James Comey announced on July 5 his agency would not recommend any criminal charges against Clinton

while blasting Clinton and her senior aides as being “extremely careless” in handling sensitive information, Xinhua news agency reported on July 12. One day later, Lynch announced the Justice Department’s decision to end the investigation with no criminal charges after her meeting with Comey. The announcement immediately drew criticism from Republicans and raised concerns that Clinton was treated on a double standard. However, Lynch on Tuesday refused to discuss details on the federal investigation into Clinton’s email practices despite Congressional Republicans’ request for more details of her decision.

‘Ruling on South China Sea final’ WASHINGTON: The US said the International arbitration court’s ruling on the South China Sea should be treated as final and binding and hoped that both China and the Philippines would comply with their obligations. In a statement, after the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague on July 12 ruled there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources in the South China Sea, State Department spokesperson John Kirby said: “In the aftermath of this important decision, we urge all claimants to avoid provocative statements or actions.” He said the decision by the Tribunal in the Philippines-China arbitration is an important contribution to the shared goal of a peaceful resolution to disputes in the South China Sea. “The United States strongly supports the rule of law. We support efforts to resolve territorial and maritime disputes in the South China Sea peacefully, including through arbitration,” Kirby said. “As provided in the Convention, the Tribunal’s decision is final and legally binding on both China and the Philippines. The United States expresses its hope and expectation that both parties will comply with their obligations.” “We encourage claimants to clarify their maritime claims in accordance with international law — as reflected in the Law of the Sea Convention — and to work together to manage and resolve their disputes,” he added. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague accused China of interfering with the Philippines’ fishing and petroleum exploration, building artificial islands in the waters and failing to prevent Chinese fishermen from fishing in the zone.

NASA’s Juno mission sends first image of Jupiter IANS, WASHINGTON

N

ASA’s Juno spacecraft has sent the first-ever image of the gas giant Jupiter and three of its four moons to the Earth as it continues orbiting the planet. The image was taken on July 10 when the spacecraft was 4.3 million km from Jupiter on the outbound leg of its initial 53.5-day orbit. The color image shows atmospheric features on Jupiter, including the famous Great Red Spot, and three of the massive planet’s four largest moons -- Io, Europa and Ganymede, from left to right in the image. “This scene from JunoCam indicates it survived its first pass

through Jupiter’s extreme radiation environment without any degradation and is ready to take on Jupiter,”

said Scott Bolton, principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.

“We can’t wait to see the first view of Jupiter’s poles,” he said in a statement. The JunoCam camera aboard NASA’s Juno mission is operational and sending down data after the spacecraft’s arrival at Jupiter July 4. Juno’s visible-light camera was turned on six days after it fired its main engine and placed itself into orbit around the largest planetary inhabitant of our solar system. However, the first high-resolution images of the gas giant are still a few weeks away. “JunoCam will continue to take images as we go around in this first orbit,” said Candy Hansen, Juno coinvestigator from the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson, Arizona.

Zakir Naik:

From liberal Muslim to Islamist Naik said it was wrong for Muslims to say ‘Namaste’ or ‘Vande Mataram’ and greet Christians with ‘Merry Christmas’ IANS, NEW DELHI

H

e began with talks on comparative religion, exhibiting a huge storehouse of knowledge that attracted a large number of Muslims and many non-Muslims too. But as his popularity grew, Zakir Naik turned Islamist, declaring nonMuslims as “disoriented”, justifying sex with female slaves and calling upon Indian Muslims to refrain from saying “namaste”. Naik, now 50, is founder of the Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) and Peace TV, which has over 100 million viewers. A doctor by training, Naik is now in trouble over allegations that his interpretation of Islam has radicalized young Muslims in India and beyond. In his early speeches, Naik referred to popular misconceptions about Islam. In a 2006 talk, he even claimed that the “Kalki Avatar” in Hinduism was a prophesy for Prophet Mohammad. He drew parallels between jehad and Lord Krishna’s call in the Bhagavad Gita to fight evil.

Zakir Naik.

As the years rolled by, Naik turned against other religions, calling some hoax. Some, he told gatherings, were no religion. He quoted the Upanishad and other texts to claim that idol worship was against Hinduism. Naik said it was wrong for Muslims to say “Namaste” or “Vande Mataram” and greet Christians with “Merry Christmas”. “The Bible has over 50,000 errors, it’s unscientific,” he

declared in some lectures. He made fun of Jesus Christ’s sermon to offer the other cheek if slapped on one. He told a young Christian at one crowd: “It’s baseless. Would you keep offering your cheek if we keep slapping you?” At his gatherings, Naik would often bluntly ask questioners if he or she would embrace Islam if he answered their questions correctly. Some agreed and ended up chang-

ing their religion. He said Muslims too could embrace other religions. But the punishment for this, he would quickly add, was “maut” (death). Asked by a man if he considered Hindus as humans since he did not consider Hinduism as a religion, Naik replied: “If by Hindu you mean a geographical definition, then I don’t have any problem.” “For peace to prevail, you have to follow the guidance of the Quran,” he said while answering a question from a Jew at a conference in India. Among Naik’s other controversial teachings: v “It is the duty of every Muslim to convey the message of Allah to non-Muslims.” This comment triggered a ban on his entering the UK. v He defended Osama bin Laden and called 9/11 an “American conspiracy”. v “If the word ‘terrorist’ means to terrorize the ememies or unsocial elements, then every Muslim must be a terrorist.” v “A Muslim can have sex with

his wife or what his right hand possesses, which means a slave.” He referred to slaves as “prisoners of war”. v Guantanamo Bay, which houses imprisoned terrorists, was holding “Muslim slaves”. v Asked why many Muslims become terrorists, Naik said: “It is a media strategy to malign Islam.” v Justifying polygamy, Naik said there were more women in the world than men and polygamy saved “extra women” from becoming “public property”. v Campaigning against pork, Naik argued that pig invited other males to have sex with his female mate. “Something similar happens in the Western society where they go to dance parties and do (wife) swapping.” This, he said, was because Westerners ate pork. As Naik’s hate poison spread, he began to face bans in many countries including the US, Canada and the UK. He has also been denied permission in some Indian cities to hold meetings.

Raj Babbar: Will ‘villain’ become a hero for Congress in UP? Muted jubilation greeted the naming of Raj Babbar, a threetime MP, as the Congress chief of Uttar Pradesh and there are murmurs if he was a wise choice

IANS, LUCKNOW

R

aj Babbar, the new Congress president in Uttar Pradesh, often played the villain in Bollywood. Will the actor-turnedpolitician prove to be a hero for the party in Uttar Pradesh? The jury is split as the Congress faces its biggest test ahead of assembly polls in the state which was once its pocket borough. Muted jubilation greeted the naming of Raj Babbar, a three-time MP, as the Congress chief of Uttar Pradesh — not because he lacks charisma or is devoid of leadership skills but because the party, despite some serious efforts lately, is in tatters in the country’s most populous state. Most district units in Uttar

Pradesh are moribund and most foot soldiers of the grand old party are looking for greener pastures. Other than that, barring the stunning victory he pulled off as Congress candidate in Firozabad years ago defeating Dimple Yadav, wife of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Raj Babbar has been not too inspiring for party cadres. He took on former army chief General V.K. Singh as the Congress candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Ghaziabad and lost by a huge margin. In the same year, he was head of the Uttar Pradesh campaign committee but the results show he failed miserably. The Congress managed to retain just two seats in the Lok Sabha battle — Amethi (Rahul

Raj Babbar.

Gandhi) and Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi). There are murmurs if Raj Babbar was a wise choice by the Congress high command. “We abide by whatever decision the party leadership takes but certainly Babbar Saheb would require more than his silver screen charisma and blessings of 10 Janpath to take the party to some position of reckoning,” a senior party leader told

IANS. He added that the experiments so far unveiled by election strategist Prashant Kishor, hired by the party for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls due in 2017, had also not met the objectives. A former Congress leader says that party workers would certainly be shaken up by the appointment of Raj Babbar as they had a “decent, quiet” chief in Nirmal Khatri.

SC restores Tuki as Arunachal CM

Governor is not conscience keeper of legislature, says court; setback for NDA IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n a major setback to the Centre, the Supreme Court this week directed the restoration of ousted Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in Arunachal Pradesh and quashed Governor J.P. Rajkhowa’s decision to advance the assembly session by a month. The court said the Governor “cannot interfere in the activities of the Assembly”. In an unanimous verdict, by Justices Jagdish Singh Khehar, Pinaki Chandra Ghosh and N.V. Ramana in the main judgment and by Justices Dipak Misra and Madan B. Lokur in their respective concurring judgments, directed the restoration of the status quo ante as it existed on December 15, 2015, effectively bringing back Tuki as Chief Minister. The constitution bench quashed the Governor Rajkhowa’s December 9, 2015 direction to advance the assembly session from January 14 to December 16, and the mes-

sage to the State assembly to take up the resolution for removal of Speaker Nebam Rabia as first item of the agenda.

Explain the word ‘thulla’, HC tells Arvind Kejriwal

The bench also set aside all the steps and decisions taken by the State assembly in pursuance to the Governor’s direction and message.

Holding that Governor can’t act as an “ombudsman”, Justice Khehar pronouncing the main judgment said, “The State Legislature, does not function under the Governor. In sum and substance, the Governor just cannot act as the Ombudsman of the State Legislature.” The court verdict came on plea by the Speaker Nabam Rabia contesting the Governor’s direction of December 9 advancing the assembly session and the message that his removal as Speaker be taken as the first item of the agenda. Referring to the Article 163(2) of the Constitution, the judgment said that there is “no room for any doubt, that the Governor cannot be seen to have such powers and functions, as would assign to him a dominating position, over the State executive and the State legislature”. On December 16, Deputy Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok had ordered the removal of the Speaker, pursuant to the resolution adopted by the Assembly.

NEWS DIGEST Sheila Congress’ UP CM face NEW DELHI: Sheila Dikshit, who was Chief Minister of Delhi for 15 long years, will be the chief ministerial candidate of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the party announced on July 14. The announcement was made by Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi at the party headquarters. “For the first time your assumption has proved right,” he said, referring to media speculation that Dikshit would be the face of the Congress in UP. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said the corruption allegations against Dikshit did not matter since BJP’s Chief Ministers in other states too faced corruption charges.

Jigisha murder case: Three convicted NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on July 14 held three men guilty of killing IT executive Jigisha Ghosh in 2009. Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Yadav held Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla and Baljit Singh Malik guilty of kidnapping and killing 28year-old Jigisha in March 2009. The court said the prosecution has proved its case against the three men. Jigisha’s parents told IANS that they are satisfied with the court order and said that justice has been done. Jigisha was kidnapped and killed on March 18, 2009 after her office cab dropped her near her home in south Delhi.

Tension grips Kashmir SARWAR KASHANI, SRINAGAR

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has asked Chief Arvind Kejriwal to explain the meaning of the word “thulla”, which he used during a television debate on policemen. Justice Mukta Gupta granted relief to Kejriwal by exempting him from personal appearance in the trial court on Thursday after summons were issued to him in a criminal defamation complaint filed by a constable, Ajay Kumar Taneja. The court posted the matter for August 21. The trial court had summoned Kejriwal saying his statement was prima facie defamatory and had

asked him to appear in the court on July 14. Hearing Kejriwal’s plea, Justice Gupta said the Aam Aadmi Party leader must explain the meaning of “thulla” as the Hindi dictionary doesn’t contain this word. “If you (Kejriwal) use this word (thulla) for somebody, you must know the meaning. You have to satisfy the court with the meaning of the word,” said the court. Senior advocate N. Hariharan, appearing for Kejriwal, said “thulla” was not used against all police personnel but against those indulging in wrong practices. — IANS

n injured youth died in a hospital here on July 14, taking the death toll to 38 in the current bout of violence that has rocked the Kashmir Valley after the death of a local militant commander last week. Curfew was imposed in the valley on July 9 to control large scale violence following the death of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, 22, who was killed in a gunfight a day earlier along with two of his associates. A police officer told IANS that the forces exercise “restraint” but when the protesters charged towards them with rocks, one of the guards opened fire. Another person was injured in the shooting. Barring the Anantnag shooting, the Kashmir Valley appeared calm but tense amid sporadic incidents of stone-pelting clashes at various places even as large areas continued to be under strict curfew for the fifth day. Life remained paralyzed almost across the valley due to the restriction and separatist called shutdown. South Kashmir - the worst

Violence erupted after the death of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, 22, who was killed in a gunfight along with two others.

In Srinagar, roads were deserted while shops and other businesses, banks and private offices were closed. Top separatists Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani, in house detention for five days, defied the restrictions and tried to walk towards the martyrs’ graveyard in curfew-bound old Srinagar. Police detained them briefly. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, however, visited the graveyard under a heavy security cover with her senior cabinet colleagues.

No political party ready for upcoming elections in UP

With just a few months left for these parties to put their best foot forward and wow the voters in Uttar Pradesh, they seem to be too embroiled in their own internal affairs IANS, LUCKNOW

B

ravado and public posturing notwithstanding, none of the major political players seems to be battle ready for the assembly elections slated for early 2017 in the politically crucial state. With just a few months left for these parties to put their best foot forward and wow the voters in Uttar Pradesh, they seem to be too embroiled in their own internal affairs. The ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), which has on more than two occasions said it is ready for the polls, is besieged with problems within the family. While the “chacha-bhatija” (uncle-nephew) differences between PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav are now part of the political folklore, the candour of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in publicly admitting that party leaders and ministers in the government were busy “looting the people, land grabbing and in filling their pockets” has given enough political ammunition to the opposition.

The recent suspension of many party leaders on charges of land grabbing and police complaints against leaders for beating up policemen and revenue officials have only dented the ruling party further. Senior journalist and political observer Rajiv Ranjan Jha says the “rule of the Samajwadi’s is as good as over and its prospects of

returning to power in 2017 are bleak”. Sources in the ruling establishment too admit that “all is not well within”. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), seen by many here as the natural challenger to the SP as the state has been swinging between these two regional parties in the last decade, is flooded with deser-

tions, something which has shaken the very foundations of the party, which stormed to power in 2007, only to be booted out in 2012. Having done well in the recent polls to local bodies and panchayats, the BSP, many felt, was “recovering lost ground and inching close to power”. Developments in the last one month, however, have

Y

oga guru Ramdev is now aiming to test waters in dairy and baby-care products to expand Patanjali's 'swadeshi' consumer products portfolio that is expected to clock a turnover to Rs 10,000 crore this fiscal. In research and development (R&D), he's investing Rs 150 crore in an upcoming institute near here. "We will invest Rs 1,000 crore

to set up six processing facilities across the country. Besides, we will invest Rs 150 crore in research and development," Ramdev told IANS. He said the new product lines would include animal husbandry and feed, hand-woven 'khadi' (cotton) clothes and baby-care products, besides dairy products like milk, cheese and paneer. He said the profits earned from baby-care business would be used for the betterment of the poor

children. From the 'khadi' wear, the earnings will be used to strengthen 'khadi' weavers. Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, a company co-founded by Ramdev along with his aide Acharya Bal Krishna in 2006, has sold fast moving consumer goods products worth Rs 5,000 crore in 2015-16, a 150 per cent growth from the previous year. "In one year we are going to take its turnover to Rs 10,000 crore," he said.

Supporting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's advocacy of cow protection, the yoga guru said the company is coming up in a bigger way for improving and conserving indigenous cow breeds. "We are investing Rs 500 crore in two-three years to multiply locally-bred cows through cow embryo transplantation technique. Our aim is basically to multiply the indigenous cows that will automatically increase the milk output and strengthen the

undone the BSP’s “first movers advantage” in the states political arena. Three major party leaders, other than some middle-rung party office-bearers and former legislators, have quit the BSP accusing its chief, Mayawati, of running it as her private property and of being driven by greed for money. Close confidante Swamy Prasad Maurya, who quit the BSP in June, was followed by another stalwart, R.K. Chowdhary. Only recently, national secretary Paramdev Yadav quit to end an over three-decade association. All of them accused Mayawati, a former state chief minister, of digressing from the Dalit agenda of party founder Kanshi Ram. From calling the BSP a chit fund company to a grocery store, the allegations by these leaders, who belong to important castes in the state, have certainly confused the BSP cadres. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is taking a shot at power after almost a decade of being relegated to the third position in what used to be its power centre, too comes across as a disorganised entity. dairy industry," said Ramdev. A cow normally gives three to five litres of milk a day, whereas the indigenous cow produces 25 to 50 litres, he said. Patanjali, which has 15,000 offline stores and is focusing on exports and improving online trading, is also launching cattle feed and supplements this year to boost the milk production. "Now we are setting up our facilities where the land is either purchased at market price or gifted by an individual. We don't believe in getting land on lease from any government," he said. The consumer products giant, which has a vast market among Ramdev's spiritual followers numbering millions in the country and overseas, is also aiming to launch bio-fertilisers, bio-pesticides and indigenous seeds, besides natural medicine and natural cosmetics. Patanjali's food park in Padartha near Haridwar spreads over 170 acres. It caters to food, cosmetic, beverage and medicine segments. This has generated employment for over 10,000 locals.

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on July 9, the second and concluding day of his visit to South Africa, lauded the diversity of the city of Durban and praised the achievements of its people of Indian origin. “One of the hallmarks of this beautiful nation is its vibrant diversity,” Modi said at a civic reception hosted in his honor by the Mayor of Durban and the Indian High Commissioner at the Durban City Hall. “And, no city celebrates this diversity better than the city of Durban and the province of Kwazulu Natal,” he said. “This celebration of plurality of dialects and languages, of belief in multiplicity of faiths and of cultural traditions, is an integral part of this city’s heritage.” He said that the first batch of 342 Indians arrived in Durban on November 16, 1860. “Today, over a century and a half later, Durban is the largest Indian city outside India,” the Prime Minister said. “It is home to the largest population of people of Indian origin in South Africa.” Of the 1.2 million people of Indian origin in South Africa, most of whose ancestors were brought as indentured Labor, 800,000 live in Durban. Modi said that despite the sufferings of early generations of Indians under apartheid and colonial rule, they preserved their culture and values. “And, today, they are proud, successful and loyal citizens of this country,” the Prime Minister said. “They are contributing to their country in education and scientific

Kenyan Indians preserving culture NAIROBI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 10 commended the people of Indian origin in Kenya for preserving their culture and tradition despite being away from their land of origin for generations. “There must be people of third generation or fourth generation here,” Modi said in his trademark diaspora rally at the Kasarani Stadi-

research, as entrepreneurs and leaders of businesses, as lawyers and judges, and as bankers, doctors and engineers.” Stating that these people of Indian origin were not living only for themselves, he said they were leading efforts to uplift the poor and the under privileged, and for the care of the sick and the elderly. “They are running old age home, centers for the terminally ill, AIDS and cancer patients, and orphan-

um here soon after arriving from Tanzania on the fourth and final leg of his four-nation African tour. “They must have only heard about Ganga, Assam, Nagaland or Mizoram. Despite this, it is commendable that they have been able to preserve their culture,” he said to rapturous cheers from a crowd of over 20,000 people.

ages,” he said. According to Modi, the history of the people-to-people ties provides a strong foundation to build the modern day partnership between India and South Africa. He said that he and South African President Jacob Zuma have agreed to advance the India-South Africa strategic ties across the whole range of social and economic sectors, including trade and investments, development of small and medium

DAR-ES-SALAAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 10 described the Indian community in Tanzania as an important link for India with the east African nation. “Most early Indian migrants to your great country happened to be from my home state,” Modi said in a speech at a banquet hosted in his honor by Tanzanian President John Magufuli. “Today, the Indian-origin community in Tanzania is an important link between our peoples in the fields of business, healthcare, and education,” he said.

businesses, information and communication technologies, and capacity and institution building. “Today, in our inter-dependent world, India’s growth story is one of the brightest spots,” Modi said.

Prior to the banquet, Modi interacted with members of the Indian community, which numbers around 50,000 in Tanzania. Modi said that while India has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world, Tanzania was one of the most important economies in Africa. “Our comprehensive agenda of cooperation is driven by our key development priorities and our common security needs,” he said. Modi said India would always a trusted partner in Tanzania’s developmental.

“But, India’s economic advance is not for the benefit of our society alone. The embrace of our partnership is open to the larger good of Africa and our friends like South Africa,” he stated.

Indian-American businessman jailed New Zealand denies visas to Indian students IANS, WASHINGTON

IANS, WELLINGTON

N

ew Zealand has denied visas to thousands of Indian students who wanted to study in the country, a media report said on July 8. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) officials believed the Indian students who enrolled themselves in tertiary institutions were not intending to study there, Radio New Zealand reported. Official figures showed 51 institutions, including half of the country’s polytechnics, had visa decline rates for Indian students of more than 30 per cent. Most institutions had more than

half of the applications being turned down. In one, the decline rate was 86 per cent. The figures cover the six months from the start of December 2015 to the end of May 2016 and were only for institutions with at least 10 visa applications from Indian students. The figures showed that Immigration New Zealand turned down 3,864 visa applications and approved 3,176 during the period.

n Indian-origin businessman has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining contracts worth $6 million from a federal program created to help minorityowned small businesses, according to authorities. Tarsem Singh was sentenced by Washington Federal Judge Reggie Walton, who also fined him $25,000 and ordered him to pay about $120,000 in restitution, officials said on July 6. Singh had set up a shell company to take advantage of the Small Business Development Program run by the Small Business Administration (SBA) after his original company became ineligible for it

and obtained over 25 federal contracts, according to SBA Inspector General Peggy E. Gustafson and Washington federal prosecutor Channing D. Phillips. They did not give the name of the companies, but identified them as “A” and “B”. The first company specializing

in building construction and renovation that Singh and his wife set up received contracts legitimately for nine years and in January 2009 it graduated from the program and could no longer qualify for the contracts under it, officials said. Singh immediately set up the fake company making it appear to meet the SBA eligibility requirements and made himself its vice president. The firm then got federal contracts. The shell company had only one employee and the workers of his original company and subcontractors did the work that should have been done by the second company’s workers as required by the SBA program, officials said.

Sahu, Station Director of first and second units, told IANS. He said in the next one month the second unit is expected to generate 430 MW and the unit will be connected to the grid. The unit started the fission process for the first time on Sunday night at 8.56 p.m. As per procedure, the power generation will be gradually increased to 50 per cent, then to 75 per cent, 90 per cent and finally to 100 per cent. However till commercial generation begins, the unit will not be earning much on

Meanwhile, the components for the third and fourth units have started arriving at Kudankulam, Sahu said. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has built two 1,000 MW nuclear power stations at Kudankulam in Tirunelvelli district around 650 km from here with the equipments supplied by

the Russian Federation. Construction activities for two more 1,000 MW units have started involving an outlay of around Rs 40,000 crore. “The third and fourth units will be built on the terms like the first two units. The equipments will be supplied by Russia while construction and commissioning will be NPCIL’s responsibility,” S.K. Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, NPCIL had told IANS.

BENGALURU: Opposition BJP on July 12 stepped up its demand for the resignation of Karnataka Minister K.J. George for allegedly abetting the suicide of police officer through protest rallies held in various parts of the state. Even as the opposition Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) lawmakers also sought George’s resignation in the state assembly here, hundreds of students, social activists and citizens joined BJP cadres in the protest rallies against the state government at Madikeri, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Hubballi, Belagavi and Bidar. George was the Home Minister till October 31, 2015, before he was made Bengaluru Development Minister and the Congress’ state unit president G. Parameshwara replaced him. “We will continue to protest till George resigns or the chief minister (Siddaramaiah) sacks him, as Ganapathi had named him in his dying declaration along with two IPS officers for harassing him and forcing to

take his own life,” BJP’s state unit president and former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters here. Mangaluru Deputy Suprintendent of Police (DSP) M.K. Ganapthi, 51, in an interview to a news channel hours before his body was found hanging in a lodge at Madikeri in Kodagu district blamed the trio for forcing to take his own life. The two IPS officers are Additional Director General of Police, Intelligence A.M. Prasad and Lokayukta (Ombudsman) inspector general of police Pronab Mohanty. The opposition parties also demanded the suspension of Prasad and Mohanty till the CID probe was completed and the inquiry was handed over to the CBI. Accusing the chief minister of protecting the trio, JD-S leader and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy asked the government why an FIR was not filed against the trio even after Ganapathi’s family filed a complaint.

flood alert has been issued in many villages of two border districts of Karnataka after excess rain water was released from Maharashtra into the Krishna river that flows through the state as downstream, an official said on July 13. “People living in villages on the banks of Krishna and low-lying areas in Bagalkot and Belagavi districts have been put on alert after Maharashtra released excess water into the river following heavy rains in its catchment areas,” the official

First digital student incubator in Kerala THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Billed as the first of its kind - a digital student incubator went online on July 13 when Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan unveiled SV.CO, the digital makeover of Startup Village designed to help thousands of college-goers make an early start in entrepreneurship.

“The government’s allocation for startups at Rs 300 crore is the highest to date in the state and higher than of the Central Government’s Department of Science and Technology,” said Vijayan “The state will fund 1,000 startups every year with Rs two lakh for converting ideas to prototypes,” added Vijayan.

hilika lake, India’s largest on the east coast in Odisha, will become part of the Bay of Bengal unless there is a “scientific intervention” to save it, a leading geologist has warned. Analysis of high-resolution Google Earth images obtained between 2005 and 2013 indicates that “a portion of the lake has already become sea,” says Jagadiswara Rao, retired Professor of Geology at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati. The 60-km-long pear-shaped lake with an area of about 1,165 sq. km. receives fresh water from inland rivers and saline water from the Bay of Bengal, thus making the water body a highly productive eco-system with rich fishery resources. Besides sheltering a number of endangered species, it is a wintering ground for more than a million migratory birds and it sustains the livelihood of more than 150,000 fisher folk

living around the lagoon. Over the years, the flow of seawater entering into the lake got so much reduced that a good portion of the lake was transformed into a fresh water ecosystem with a remarkable decline in the overall biodiversity and steep decline in fish production. In 2000, the Chilika Development Authority (CDA), the state agency responsible for the upkeep of the lake, sought to rejuvenate

the lake ecosystem by dredging of the outer channel which connects the lake to the sea, and opening a new “mouth” to enable seawater enter into the lake. Funding for this came from two special grants totalling Rs. 570 crore from the central government. According to Rao, these interventions resulted in improvement in the fishery resources of the lagoon but also had an adverse impact on its environment.

Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal upset hosts France 1-0 in extra time of a breathtaking Euro 2016 final to clinch their first major football title. Ronaldo, the leader of the Portuguese team, got an injury only seven minutes into the game when French midfielder Dimitri Payet put in a challenge on him and caught him with the follow-through, bringing play to a halt, Xinhua reported. Ritu dropped, Sushila to lead

S LONDON: Andy Murray won his second Wimbledon title beating Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in two hours and 48 minutes on Sunday at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Murray has been for long the less accomplished member of the so called Big Four who have all won the Career Grand Slam and at least a dozen slams. But this was the first time he was under the pressure of being the favorite in a Grand Slam final and not facing a player other than Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer. When he won Wimbledon in 2013,

he had overcome the weight of expectations from Great Britain to find a home player holding aloft the title for the first time in 77 years. When the match started after an early spell of rain in the morning, Murray started well and broke in the seventh game of the first set as Raonic missed a forehand volley to the great elation of the crowd. He soon served out the set with a forehand drop volley. In the second set, Murray had a few chances to break the Raonic serve but he staved them off with some aggressive tennis including big serves and volleys.

André-Pierre Gignac for France hit the side bar minutes before the 90 minutes of play and in the extra time, Raphaël Guerreiro, Portugal’s left-back, struck the cross-bar with a free-kick. It was then that 28-year-old Eder fired his blast that salvaged the match for Portugal.

‘Bollywood not for 60-plus actors’

MUMBAI: Actor Hrithik Roshan says the action directors of “Mohenjo Daro” have pushed the envelope and churned out some “mind blowing action sequences”. And his favorite is the film’s climax scene. Written, produced and directed by filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, the epic adventure-romance is set in the

city of Mohenjo Daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilisation which dates back to 2600 BC. Produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita Gowariker, “Mohenjo Daro” is slated to release on August 12. “The action directors have pushed the envelope in choreographing some mind blowing action sequences for the film,” Hrithik said in a statement. He added: “We have worked really hard on them. Risks and injuries are a part of it but when you see the final outcome, you feel it was all worth it. The climax sequence is particularly my favorite.” The film’s trailer also gives a sneak peak into the same. There are four sequences where the action takes place in full force, including the fight with a crocodile.

Never going to leave TV and hosting: Ayushmann Khurrana IANS, MUMBAI

Dev from the Film and Television Institute Of India came to Danny with the idea of doing “Kabuliwala”, the actor fell in love with the suggestion. “It is a modern take on the classic. But the basic story of a homesick Afghan dry-fruit seller’s ties with a little girl in Kolkata remains the same,” said the actor, adding that he has played the role with great restraint.

A

ctor Ayushmann Khurrana, who is currently preparing for his upcoming film “Meri Pyaari Bindu”, says he will never leave TV or hosting shows on the small screen. “I started from the small screen. I was a television anchor who started with a youth channel and then ‘India’s Got Talent’. I also hosted IPL...So I guess I never left television as such...” Ayushmann told IANS.The actor says the small and big screens share a “symbiotic relationship and they

cannot exist in isolation”.”So you can’t say that I have to do television or I have come from television. I am never going to leave television or hosting. I will Judge only if the show is exciting,” added the 31-year-old star.

‘Sultan’: Salman’s ‘Raging Bull’ act is blockbuster Rs 300 crore mark in opening weekend MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s Eid release “Sultan” has crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide in just five days since its release. The sportsdrama film is now touted to be the highest grossing Bollywood film in terms of opening weekend collection worldwide. The Yash Raj Films production, which released on July 7 has done a gross box office collection of Rs 252.5 crore ($ 37.7 million) in India and Rs 92 crore ($ 13.7 million) abroad, according to a communication from the banner. The total gross box office collection of the Ali Abbas Zafar directorial now stands at Rs 344.5 crore ($ 51.4 million).

N

ope, you can’t touch this. Salman Khan’s superstardom is beyond the precincts of rationale or logic. To his credit, he is now finally surrendering to his characters. After last year’s Eid’s heartwarming “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” act, this festive season Salman pushes himself physically and emotionally to a new level of commitment in “Sultan”. Playing the good hearted solidly dependable Haryanvi wrestler Salman brings a kind of feisty vulnerability along with a spiritual certainty to his instantly likeable character. He is no longer interested in being Salman Khan on screen. The physical and emotional transformation is so palpable and authentic as to remind us of what Robert de Niro achieved in and outside the boxing ring in Martin Scorcese’s “Raging Bull”.

Film: “Sultan”; Director: Ali Abbas Zafar; Cast: Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma; Rating: ****

Salman’s accent is pitch-perfect. And that’s where the performance begins. While the actor takes himself dead seriously, the film is remarkably light-hearted and freespirited even though the underlying message - sometimes to be a true hero you’ve got to fall hard on the ground before you pick yourself up again - is never squandered in the outward frivolity that grips

the narrative as, for long stretches, Salman plays the super-smitten lover-boy who can’t get enough of Aarfa (Anushka Sharma). Though their scenes of courtship and romance are unnecessarily stretched out and over cute, the pair works largely because Anushka is the first Salman co-star who doesn’t seem overwhelmed by his presence. Yup, she gives him tit

for tat with such nifty nonchalance that we are soon rooting for them as a couple. This is a funny engaging and satisfying film brimming with many moments of joie de vivre. The wrestling sequences, done with a choreographic candor, are outstanding. Salman slams his opponents with such intensity that you wonder if the ricocheting ruckus in the wrestling ring is a metaphor for what this film is sure to do at the box office. All said and done, “Sultan” is a love story first, then a sports film. Director Ali Abbas Zafar doesn’t distil the drama with interpolations.

Asked if she wishes or plans to star along with Karisma in a film, Kareena told IANS: “I always wish...there are no plans, but I wish to work with her (Karishma).” Kareena says there aren’t any plans as she doesn’t know if the “Biwi No.1” star wants to come back on the silver screen. “Right now there are no plans because I don’t know if she (Karisma) is even thinking of working on the big screen as her kids are really small...Her mindset is very different,” she said. BY PROF SUNKARI RAM MURTHY ndia is poised for a nine per cent growth rate in a couple of years and India currently is the bright spot in the world, according to Indian Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Venkaiah Naidu. Speaking to a select audience meeting held on the sidelines of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the American Telugu Association at Chicago, he said that while the world economic growth rate was slowing down with China’s growth rate plummeting down to less than seven per cent, India’s growth rate which was at 7.4 per cent was forging ahead year by year under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Naidu said that Modi, with his dynamic approach in all spheres, had recently won the accolades of the World Bank. Quoting the World Bank chief, Naidu said: “Things are moving fast in India which is making fantastic progress on the economic front”. President of United States Barack Obama has described Modi as the “Rock Star”. Elaborating the progress made by the country ever since BJP came to power, Naidu

Minister tells NRIs to invest in India said several innovative schemes like Digital India, Skill India, gas subsidy scheme, etc received overwhelming response as the lives of the people were changing for the better. “We are reaching the unreached, banking the unbanked and funding the unfounded “, he said. Unable to digest the fast pace of progress of the BJP government, the Congress party which failed to deliver goods as admitted by Rajiv Gandhi who said that 15 paise out of every one rupee went to the poor, the minister said: “The Congress party is frustrated and not cooperating with the BJP in passing several important Bills in Parliament aimed at the betterment of the people”, thundered Naidu triggering a loud applause from the audience. Making passionate plea to the NRIs to invest in India, the Minister told the Telugus not to forget three Ms- the Mother, The Motherland and The Mother tongue.” Several ministers, MPs from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including Kadiam

Srihari, deputy chief minister, Naini Narasimha Reddy , Ghanta Srinivas Rao , K. Keshav Rao, TRS general secretary, Y.V.Subba Reddy, Jitender Reddy and top industrialists attended the convention. Speaker after speaker emphasized that though Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were divided, Telugus were one and commended the organisers and delegates for their sincere endeavour promoting rich Telugu culture of both the States. A galaxy of Telugu stars like Nani, Kajol Agarwal , Jagpathi Babu, Rasi Khanna, Lavanya Tripathi, etc were the cynosure of all eyes at the ATA convention . music director Manish Sharma. The hall was jampacked and organisors heeded to the demand of the crowd to extend the program from midnight to early hours of July 3. It was a gathering with a difference at Chicago. Telugus from all over America in their best traditional attires congregated at the sprawling Stephenson Covention centre. Telugus from the both states--Andhra Pradesh and Telagngana--came together and celebrated the occasion with bonhomie and camaraderie. Telangana convention draws 7,000 patrons BY A STAFF WRITER ETROIT, MI -- Close on the heels of the American Telugu Convention at Chicago a few days ago, another Telugu convention, this time a Telangana meet, took Detroit by storm. The first three-day world Telangana Convention, which commenced with an impressive and colourful banquet, concluded here on July 10 with Sri Lakshminarasimhasway Kalaynam of Yadadri , a popular pilgrim centre on the outskirts of Hyderabad , after world-famous Tirupathi. The world Telangana Convention was celebrated with pomp and gaiety. A festive atmosphere prevailed for the three days as the halls were embellished with replicas of Charminar, symbol of Hyderabad, temples and tourist spots of the region. Sumptuous ethnic food was served in the sprawling dining hall. Men in suits and women in traditional Pattua sarees with designer jewellery added glamour quotient to the gathering. Inaugurating the conference, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana State, Kadiyam Srihari, made a fervent appeal to American Telugus to help the government in digitalisation of classrooms which was key to modernise the education system. Stating that most of the NRIs were spending funds in building infrastructure like hostels and funding the poor students, he said that they need not worry about such issues as the state government would take care of these basic issues. As part of modernizing the system, the government was planning to digitalize education like in America in 5,000 schools from the next academic year. “We need your expertise in digitalising the classrooms by providing computer hardware and software. A foolproof system will be developed to ensure the donations are not misused or diverted and every transaction would be transparent on line, he added. Referring to the many cultural programmes showcasing the Telugu culture, Srihari observed: “It is paradoxical that while Indians in India were aping western lifestyles, the pub culture observing days like Valentine Day, Father’s Day and Mother’s Day, the Telugus in US are adhering to and cementing rich Telugu traditions while leading busy and modern American lifestyle.” The Telangana Jagruthi chairperson K Kavitha, TRS MP, an extra-constitutional authority in Telangana government being the daughter of the Chief Minister K. Chndrasekhar Rao, led the bonalu and bonalu procession. Addressing the audience, she said that while such associations were essential to sustain the Telangana identity, Telugus should work in tandem with other Telugu Associations for the betterment of the community. More than 50 songs, drama and shows depicting Telangana history and culture were organised during the three-day Programme. However, a three-hour musical night which went on till the early hours of July 10 by Telugu film music director Anup Rubens as well as a Qawwali was the cynosure of all eyes at the festival. Vinod Kuknoor, co-convenor of the ATA conference, told Hiindialive.com that the maiden world Telangana Convention was a grand success as more than 7,000 Telanganites from all over US participated

New medical device for heart patients

Samir Pancholly

BY A STAFF WRITER LARKS SUMMIT, PA -- Samir Pancholy, a doctor nationally renowned for his advances in emergency heart care, has invented a device to prevent complications during catheterization. Pancholy, an Indian American interventional cardiologist in Clarks Summit, Pa., helped introduce the nation to a less painful, safer way to insert a catheter through the wrist instead of the groin. He is breaking ground with a device that prevents blood vessels from closing after the procedure. “One of the potential downsides of doing radial artery catheterization is that because it’s a small artery and we put equipment in there, it tends to close up or occlude,” Pancholy said. In May, Pancholy and VasoInnovations Inc., the company he started with several partners, received patents for VasoBand. Doctors catheterize patients for procedures like installing a stent, clearing blockages in blood vessels or inserting tiny cameras to look inside the heart. VasoBand wraps around the wrist, covering the access point, and applies pressure to both the radial and ulnar arteries. It stops bleeding from the radial artery but keeps blood flowing to prevent occlusion after the procedure. Only a small portion of radial artery catheterizations led to closed arteries in 2002, when Pancholy first began the procedure-about seven to ten per cent, he said. Through techniques he and colleagues developed in 2008 that later became nationally accepted best practices, they cut that down to 2 to 3 per cent. However, those closed arteries mean grave complications later, and a tiny fraction of occlusions wasn’t good enough for the doctor. “We’d go in once, do the catheterization, everything goes fine and the patient goes home,” he said. “Then, two years later, they have another blockage that we have to fix and we can’t go back in that same artery again--it closed up.”

The Telangana Association is the breakaway group of 25-year-old American Telugu Association dominated by a particular Telugu community and parallel to another

well-known American Telugu body— TANA (Telugu Association of North America)--though there are dozens of Telugu Associations in US. However, one can see a lot of common faces in all the groups. “Telugus adopt an inclusive approach despite regional and caste differences”, observed a senior Telugu person who has been attending several Telugu conferences.

Indian gets 15 months for SBA contract fraud BY A STAFF WRITER AIRFAX, VA -- An Indian American businessman from Fairfax, Virginia, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining contracts worth $6 million from a federal program created to help minority-owned small businesses. Tarsem Singh, 61, was sentenced by Washington Federal Judge Reggie Walton, who also fined him $25,000 and ordered him to pay about $120,000 in restitution, officials said on July 6. Singh had set up a shell company to take advantage of the Small Business Development Program run by the Small Business Administration after his original company became ineligible for it and obtained over 25 federal contracts, according to SBA Inspector General Peggy E. Gustafson and Washington federal prosecutor Channing D. Phillips. The first company specializing in building construction and renovation that Singh and his wife set up received contracts legitimately for nine years and, in January 2009, it graduated from the program and could no longer qualify for the contracts under it, officials said. Singh immediately set up the fake

company making it appear to meet the SBA eligibility requirements and made himself its vice president. The firm then got federal contracts. The SBA Small Business Development program was established to help “small, disadvantaged businesses compete in the marketplace,” according to the agency. Firms owned by minorities, women

Indian pleads guilty to revenge cyberattack BY A STAFF WRITER OSTEN, TX -- An Indian origin network engineer has pleaded guilty to a revenge cyberattack on a network security company and its clients after he was fired, according to officials. Kamlesh Patel admitted in court to hacking the computer of his former employer and three clients by using the network logons of a former colleague and deleting vital information resulting in $137,000 in damages, Massachusetts Federal prosecutor Carmen Oritz announced in Boston last week. After the 40-year-old Patel was dismissed as a senior network engineer at Baesis Inc.,

B

a network security and maintenance company based in Northborough, in October 2010, he went into its network and deleted copies of its clients’ network configurations, prosecutors said. Three months later, he hacked the computer of Baesis and three of its clients

and used a malware to delete data from their networks cutting off access to the internet and email. One company could not use to its internet-based phone system for several weeks. Ortiz said that Patel has agreed to compensate his victims for the losses of $137,000 they incurred as a result of his crime. When he is sentenced on September 28 by federal judge Leo Sorokin, he could face a maximum sentences of 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine for the crimes of causing damage to internet-connected computers, and five years and $250,000 for using another person’s identity to commit a crime.

BY A STAFF WRITER H I L A D E L L P H I A , PA - - A Pennsylvania man developed lead poisoning after he took Ayurveda herbal supplements but he got cured after he stopped taking them. The 26-year-old unidentified man’s case was reported by LiveScience. Stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and dark-colored stools had sent the man to an emergency room in Philadelphia, where doctors discovered that he had a high level of lead in his blood, according to the report. The man’s symptoms went away several months after he was treated and stopped taking the supplements, the doctors who treated him wrote in their report. This is not the first time Ayurvedic herbal supplements have landed someone in the hospital. There have been other cases of lead poisoning linked to the use of similar supplements, the man’s doctors wrote in the report, published June 30 in the journal BMJ Case Reports. “This case follows similar reports in the US of acute lead toxicity from Ayurvedic medications produced in India,” they wrote. Ayurveda is a traditional herbal medicine system that originated more than 2,000 years ago in India, according to the report. About 80 per cent of people in India use this type of medicine, according to the report. In one subdivision of Ayurveda, metals-including mercury, lead and arsenic--are used in addition to herbal remedies to treat conditions such as epilepsy, insomnia and asthma. Researchers estimate that roughly 35 to 40 per cent of the 6,000 medicines listed in the Ayurvedic collection of formulas intentionally contain at least one metal, the authors said in their report. The man described in the report first took the herbal supplements to treat lower-back pain he experienced during a trip to India. After returning to the US, he started using the supplements regularly, and soon started having abdominal symptoms, according to the study. At the hospital, the doctors determined that the supplements he had been taking were to blame for his condition, as he had not been exposed to lead in any other way. Indeed, when the doctors later analyzed the supplements, they found that they did contain the metal. The man’s symptoms were treated, and the doctors suggested he stop taking the supplements. The man was sent home from the hospital after two days. He was then readmitted for an additional, scheduled treatment to remove the metal from his body, and within months, his symptoms were resolved.

Cannabis users who favour non-tobacco routes had 61.5 per cent higher odds of wanting professional help to use less cannabis, and 80.6 per cent higher odds of wanting help to use less tobacco, than those users who prefer tobacco routes, said the paper published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry. T

he runway of FDCI India Couture Week (ICW) 2016 will platform the fashion statement of 11 couturiers, who will showcase their collections at the five-day event through 10 shows here. The fashion gala is slated to take place from July 20-24 at the Taj Palace hotel here. There will be three offsite shows, said a statement issued on behalf of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) -- the

country’s apex fashion body that organises the event. FDCI President Sunil Sethi said: “The five-day fiesta will be a specta-

cle of ebullient ensembles, grand sets and riveting concepts as well as offsite shows, by leading designers. It will be a tribute to luxury and will pen a new story of grandeur in keeping with the aesthetics of Indian traditions.” Ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra will open the fashion gala. It will also mark the first time that fashion designers Tarun Tahiliani and Anita Dongre will showcase at the platform ever since the event shifted to the capital city in 2010. It was earlier held in Mumbai.

MUMBAI: Celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani, who will be cojudging second season of "India’s Next Top Model”, says fitness must be more important than being thin for models. The show, which begins on Sunday on MTV channel, will have Ratnani co-judging the show with actress Lisa Haydon while MTV VJ and actress Anusha Dandekar and grooming expert Neeraj Gaba will be the mentors of the contestants. “We have a mix of girls and all of them are not that thin. The contestants are not particularly thin... They are more fit as that is one important criterion. Fitness plays a very important part in modelling,” Ratnani told IANS over the phone. Ratnani said models' fitness is also required as they have to flaunt one size that the designers make. “It is what the models have to wear on the shoots and on the ramp, so the models have to be fit," added the photographer, who is known for his annual calendar and is also the cover photographer for leading fashion magazines. "India's Next Top Model" will have 13 new faces competing with each other. Ratnani shared that the second season will have a much more “confident approach because the first season did really well". "It was accepted widely by everybody. This time the girls are more confident. This time there are more girls who look like models.

NEW DELHI: Monsoon is all about sitting by the window and enjoying the pitter patter of raindrops. So, it is time to make your home a cosy place and brighten it up, says an expert. Rajat Singhi, founder and creative director of Address Home, a luxury home decor brand, has shared some décor tips for monsoon: l Begin transforming your home and make it monsoon ready by incorporating a slight change in the bed linen. Go for light fabric and bright colours. For instance, a bright Mediterranean blue can be teamed with an orange spread or yellow bed linen.

L

l Add the sparkle into your monsoon decor by investing in a few good aromatic therapy options. From candles to incense sticks, mild fragrance that can help evade musty smells is what you really need this season. Also, one can buy lanterns and votives for a more luxurious set up. It is a good way to welcome monsoon for your house.

ove to spin good stories at any point of time? You can win a woman’s heart faster as according to researchers, women find men who are good storytellers more appealing and sexy. The findings showed that women rated men who were good storytellers as more desirable and potential long-term partners. It is because the man shows that he knows how to connect, to share emotions and, possibly, to be vulnerable, the team noted. “Further, he is also indicating that he is interesting and articulate and can also gain resources and provide support,” the researchers said in the work published in the journal Personal Relationships.

Daily stress can kill your sex life: Experts ED can happen to men at any age but the risk increases with age and may also increase mental and emotional stress in men IANS, NEW DELHI

R

egular stress can not just hamper your peace of mind, affect sleep and weaken your immunity, but prolonged periods of high stress and anxiety can increase blood pressure and cholesterol levels, leading to erectile dysfunction (ED) which will hamper your sex life, experts have warned. ED is an inability to develop or maintain an erection during the sexual activity. It can have severe psychological consequences as it can limit your intimacy, affect your self-esteem and impact your most important relationship. “Stress can be responsible for ED. It affects the psychological state of mind where stimulation may not result in erection even if other things are normal,” explained Dr. Vipin Tyagi, sur-

geon (Robotic and Kidney Transplant) at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. ED can happen to Men often men at any age but the risk increases have a hard with age may also time coping increase mental and with ‘erectile emotional stress. “While the stress dysfunction’ and anxiety are understandable, men should not be hesitant to talk but make a conscious effort to address it. Speaking to someone - either their partner, a family member, a friend or a professional consultant about their condition may ease their stress,” Dr. Rajeev Kumar, a urologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told IANS. The bottom line is: Do not hesitate to meet your doctor early to avoid embarrassment in bed.

LGB adults more prone to Walk the talk at workplace smoke, alcohol abuse IANS, NEW YORK

NEW YORK: Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults were more likely to indulge in heavy drinking and smoking as well as suffer from physical and mental health conditions, new research has found. “Our study indicates that LGB adults experience significant health disparities particularly in mental health and substance use, likely due to the minority stress that they experience as a result of their exposure to both interpersonal and structural discrimination,” said Gilbert Gonzales of Vanderbilt University in the US. The findings showed that bisexual men showed highest prevalence of heavy drinking at 10.9 per cent compared with 5.7 per cent of heterosexual or 5.1 per cent of gay men.Bisexual men were most like to be heavy smokers at 9.3 per cent

compared with 6.0 per cent of heterosexual and 6.2 per cent of gay men. Further, bisexual women had the heaviest alcohol consumption at 11.7 per cent compared with 8.9 per cent of lesbian and 4.8 per cent of heterosexual women. Lesbian women at 5.2 per cent were more likely to be heavy smokers than 3.4 per cent of heterosexual and 4.2 per cent of bisexual women. In addition, 16.9 per cent of heterosexual men suffered moderate or severe psychological distress, and 25.9 per cent of gay men and 40.1 per cent of bisexual men showed distress. Among heterosexual women 21.9 per cent showed symptoms of moderate and severe psychological distress compared with 28.4 per cent of lesbian and 46.4 per cent of bisexual women.

E

ver thought of a walking meeting at your office? Organise one this Monday as it will surely keep you and your colleagues (boss included), who spend most of their working hours sitting in chairs, healthy. Converting just one seated meeting per week at work into a walking meeting increased the work-related physical activity levels

of workers by 10 minutes, a study has shown. “Interventions such as the walking meeting protocol that encourages walking and raises levels of physical activity in the workplace are needed to counter the negative health effects of sedentary behaviour,” said lead investigator Alberto J Caban-Martinez, Assistant Professor at University of Miami in the US. The new research was published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

Painkillers may up health risk in newborns IANS, LONDON

T

aking common painkillers during pregnancy more often is likely to raise the risk of autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, especially boys, new research warns. The findings also showed that pre-natal exposure to paracetamol raises the risk of autism spectrum diseases more in boys. “The male brain may be more vulnerable to harmful influences during early life. Our differing

gender results suggest that androgenic endocrine disruption, to which male brains could be more sensitive, may explain the association,” lead author Claudia AvellaGarcia, researcher at Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), a Spanish research organisation. Maternal intake of paracetamol increased the risk of ADHD in children of both genders. Persistently exposed children in particular showed poorer performance in attention, impulsivity and visual speed processing.
