U
nited States President Barack Obama warned that there would be periodic setbacks in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) and said it is a long-term campaign. “This is going to be a long-term campaign; there are no quick fixes involved,” Obama said after a meeting with coalition military leaders at Joint Base Andrews in the U.S. state of Maryland, Xinhua reported. The president acknowledged

The meeting with military leaders was held amid fresh fears that IS was still making gains in both Iraq and Syria a “classic” military challenge. The meeting with international military leaders, top White House officials and top Pentagon brass was
held amid new fears that IS is still making gains in both Iraq and Syria despite a U.S.-led bombing campaign. IS militants have reportedly captured a military training camp in western Iraq and lobbed bombs at Baghdad suburbs, sparking concerns that the Iraqi military is not up to the fight. But the White House maintained that despite some of the troubling news, the president’s plan against IS was “succeeding”. “We’re in the early days of the execution of that strategy,” said press secretary Josh Earnest during a White House press briefing on October 14.

Gay marriage permitted in Alaska WASHINGTON: Gay couples in the state of Alaska may now request for the necessary documents to marry due to a court ruling that after 16 years revoked the constitutional amendment banning such unions. In a ruling issued on October 12, federal Judge Timothy Burgess found in favor of five gay couples who had sued the state of Alaska in an attempt to nullify the constitutional amendment approved by voters in 1998. The judge said in his ruling that the amendment violates due process and the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. Alaska authorities may appeal the ruling. Alaska and Hawaii in 1998 were the first states to pass constitutional amendments against samesex marriage. Recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court and other lower courts have resulted in there being more than 30 U.S. states that now allow gay marriage. A week ago, the U.S. high court rejected the appeals of five states -Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Indiana — which were seeking to prohibit gay marriage in a ruling
that cleared the way for same-sex couples to marry in six other states: Colorado, Kansas, North and South Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming. Just a day later, a federal appeals court issued a ruling overturning the prohibitions on gay marriage in Idaho and Nevada. Nevertheless, a Supreme Court justice later imposed a temporary suspension on gay marriage in Idaho. Analysts believed that the high court was going to find in favor of same-sex unions in at least one or two cases concerning gay marriage during the recently-begun judicial session by issuing a ruling with national implications before June 2015. However, the Supreme Court has avoided entering into the debate on the legalization of gay marriage on the national level. healthcare worker at Texas Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the first Ebola patient in the U.S. has tested positive for the deadly virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on October 12. “The hospital and patient were notified of the preliminary and confirmatory test results,” Xinhua quoted the CDC as saying in a statement. “Treatment decisions will be made by the patient and hospital.” Earlier, a preliminary test result conducted on October 11 at the Texas Department of State Health Services’ laboratory in Austin showed that the worker who reported a lowgrade fever overnight October 10 contracted the virus.
Earlier, the CDC said a “breach in protocol” caused the healthcare worker to preliminarily test positive for Ebola after treating the first patient with the deadly virus in the U.S. The healthcare worker, reportedly a female nurse at Texas
Presbyterian Hospital, is the first known person-to-person transmission case of Ebola in the US. “We are deeply concerned,” Xinhua quoted CDC director Tom Frieden as telling in a press conference on October 12.

he United States-India Business Council (USIBC) has reaffirmed its faith and hope in the future of the U.S.India trade relationship with its members committed to making $41 billion investment in India. “There’s never been a better nor a more vital time for the U.S. and India to work together than right now. Let us seize a defining moment in a defining partnership,” USIBC chairman Ajay Banga said at its 39th Anniversary Leadership Summit here. “The admiration for India is today being matched by a renewed optimism about India in the U.S. and around the world,” said Banga, who is also President and
CEO, MasterCard to a packed house in the Hall of Flags at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The premier trade advocacy organization comprised of 310 of the top-tier U.S. and Indian companies hosted the summit in the wake of Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the U.S. Entitled ‘A New Chapter: Fast Tracking Growth,’ it brought together industry and government leaders from both India and the U.S.
WASHINGTON: The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC, has blamed the Republicans, in a new electoral ad, for slashing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) budget for researching and combating diseases such as Ebola. “Republicans voted to cut CDC’s budget to fight Ebola,” the commercial says, citing a 2011 budget vote that included cuts to the agency, while noting at the same time that conservatives “protect tax breaks for special interests”. DCCC president Steve Israel, said in a communique. — IANS

The framework in which all outstanding issues can be resolved and a peaceful and cooperative relationship built between the two countries was the Simla accord and the Lahore declaration, he said. “We have already stated that we are willing for serious dialogue in this framework. It will cover all issues including that of Jammu and Kashmir. It seems from what Pakistan is doing, it is not interested in this kind of dialogue,” the spokesperson noted.
Viskhapatnam district accounted for 15 deaths. Five people were killed in Vijayanagarm while one person died in Srikakulam district. Officials said most deaths occurred due to falling trees. Parkala Prabhakar, advisor to the state government, told reporters in Hyderabad on October 13 that 6,638 houses were damaged in three north coastal districts and adjoining East Godavari. He said railway tracks and roads were damaged at 109 places. While Visakhapatnam and Vijayanagaram districts suffered extensive damage, Srikakulam district faces threat of floods due to heavy inflows in the rivers and breach of several tanks. The hurricane knocked down hundreds of trees, electricity poles and communication towers in the region.

It said that showing great personal courage, Satyarthi, “maintaining Gandhi’s tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights”. Malala was shot by a Taliban gunman as she took a bus home from school in Pakistan’s northwest in 2012. She went to Britain for treatment. The Nobel Committee regards it “as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism”. It said there were 168 million child laborers in the world now. In 2000, the figure was 78 million higher. The world has come closer to the goal of eliminating child labor. Satyarthi’s group has so far freed about 80,000 children from servitude, including bonded laborers, and helped in their successful reintegration, rehabilitation and education. Officially, there are only about five million child workers in India. But activists say the actual figure is ten times as much.
Meet Malala — the youngest Nobel laureate ISLAMABAD: Malala Yousufzai, the 17-year-old Pakistani girl education campaigner who was shot in the head in 2012 by a Taliban gunman, is the youngest person ever to win a Nobel Prize. Malala won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize along with Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. Before Malala, Australia-born British citizen William Lawrence Bragg was the youngest Nobel laureate when he won the physics Nobel in 1915 at the age of 25. In naming her for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said: “Despite her youth, Malala Yousafzay has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education, and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations. This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her

heroic struggle, she has become a leading spokesperson for girls’ rights to education.” Malala and India’s Satyarthi were named the joint winners of the eight-million kronor ($1.1 million) peace prize by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee - Nor-
way’s former prime minister Thorbjoern Jagland — on October 10. Malala was shot in the head while on her way to school by a Taliban militant on October 9, 2012. From that horrific moment two years ago to this momentous one Friday morning, the 17-year-old’s
tale has been one of immense inspiration for millions of people across the world who value children’s - and not just girls’ - rights and education. After being shot, a critically injured Malala was airlifted to a military hospital in Peshawar. There a damaged portion of her skull had to be removed. Later the Pakistan government at its expense, airlifted her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries and pulled back from the brink. Malala did not become famous only two years ago after the appalling Taliban attack on her. Rather, Taliban militants shot at her because she had already earned name for raising her voice for girls’ right to education much before that, defying Taliban diktat. Born July 12, 1997, in a Sunni Muslim family at Mingora in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, Malala attended
a school run by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai. Her activism did not go unnoticed and, in 2011 she was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize, also known as the Children’s Nobel. The same year she was awarded the National Youth Peace Prize of Pakistan. In England, after being discharged from hospital, she started attending Birmingham High School in March 2013. In October 2013, she released her autobiography: “I am Malala: The girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban.” The same month, the European Parliament conferred on her the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize last year too but did not get it. This year she became the Nobel laureate, the youngest ever. She was in school in Birmingham when the good news floated in.

Enjoy green, clean Diwali With Indian PM launching ‘Clean India campaign,’ Diwali can’t be far behind... IANS, NEW DELHI
A
n NGO is all set to motivate schoolkids to celebrate green Diwali. It launched a week-long green Diwali campaign on October 14 in various private and government schools. "We are all aware of the ill-effects of crackers. And so, we have decided to promote green Diwali," said Promod Sharma from the NGO, Yuvsatta. The NGO along with the department of environment will involve over thousands of students in 130 eco-clubs of schools in the city in the drive. And in seven schools, formal awareness programs in morning assemblies will be organized from 8.15am to 8.45 pm. Diwali is just around the corner and to mark the occasion, this year,
skip the usual powder color or flower rangolis and instead experiment with paper rangolis. These paper rangolis can be placed on the floor, as a decorative element for ceremonies or celebrations. The rangolis are hand-cut and assembled from layers of paper; they are light and portable as well. Paper rangolis Parikh will also be showcasing bespoke wedding invitations, social stationery, block-printed stoles and her Tree of Life paintings. In her art, she uses shades of peach,
salmon pink, beige, brown and olive green. She has also created screen paintings (made using black and white pens) and ink works, originally created for wedding cards. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) fire and emergency services department has started tightening the screws on traders of fire crackers to ensure a safe Diwali in the city. The department has permitted 889 traders to go ahead with sales after taking an affidavit regarding installation of fire preventive and safety equipment. Chief fire officer Rajendra Uchake said that t h e depart-
ment is issuing only recommendation letters allowing sale of fire crackers. "The letter was made mandatory by the police department for issuing licences to firecracker vendors. The step has been taken in the larger public interest. The Fire Act is silent on fire crackers and also norms of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization. Therefore, the department is not issuing no-objection certificate," he said. Random inspection will be carried out before and during Diwali.

E-tailers join THE PARTY Online shopping makes offline retailers cry foul FAKIR BALAJI, BANGALORE
A
s online shopping trend sweeps digital India, offline retailers are a worried lot, with sales of electronic goods, consumer durables and utility products declining across cities and towns even during the peak festival season. With e-commerce players Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon pitching for more orders, offering hefty discounts and freebies in the virtual world, vendors in the real world are crying foul of unfair competition and a non-level playing field. “Growing competition among them (e-retailers) for ramping up sales at any cost is affecting our business, as we do not see the kind of footfalls we got even year ago and our retail sales have taken a severe hit because many a smart buyers prefer shop online where prices are lower than we are able to give on several goods,” manager of a leading consumer showroom told IANS here. Though the annual sales turnover of the offline retail sector is estimated to be $25 billion (`500 billion) as against $3 billion (`180 billion) of the emerging e-tail sector, many retail formats are feeling the heat of their tech-savvy counterparts. “Unlike them (e-retailers) who sell goods at factory price and save on overheads by delivering them to buyers through courier, we have to factor intermediary costs and profit margin within the MRP (maximum retail price). They (e-retailers) also
do not pay value added tax (VAT) on sales, as they claim to be just shipping the goods from source (factory) to end-user,” the manager said on anonymity. The online price war, triggered by Flipkart on October 6, with steep discounts, crazy deals and lucky draws on a range of products, has brought to the fore the threat the sun rise e-tail sector poses to the traditional retail sector. Flipkart’s ‘Big Billion Day’ sale also resulted in outrage in the social media for cheating’ its online shoppers, with deceptive offers and false promises. Flipkart, however, claimed that it got a billion hits and sold products worth $100 million (`6 billion) the day, with a whopping 500,000 mobile handsets, 500,000 clothes and shoes and 25,000 television sets flying off its shelves within hours of discounted sale at 8 a.m.

Go on a holiday this Diwali
Here comes the festive season and a perfect time for unwinding with family IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith a week-long break at disposal, the advance bookings for Diwali holidays are up by 20 to 40 percent compared to the previous year as Indians are heading to newer destinations in India as well as in foreign locations. “There is a rush for the lastminute bookings but there are no seats available to destinations like Kerala and Goa. After economic slowdown in the past two years, the mood in the market is on positive side and people are keen to travel,” said Sanjeev Chajjer, vicepresident, Cox & Kings. Travel is non-negotiable for Indians and such long weekends offer great holiday potential in nearby as well as far destinations. The upcoming Diwali weekend offers impactful opportunity for international short breaks and has further fuelled demand, witnessing an impressive upswing of over 20 percent in queries, said Shibani Phadkar, senior vice-
president and head — Leisure Travel, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. “Last year, I could not travel to Thailand which I had planned. I dropped the idea because of inflation and instead went to Goa with my wife. But this year, I am traveling to Dubai and Singapore,” said a city-based professional. “We have reported an increase of over 30 percent in bookings to a diverse range of domestic favorites like North East, Coorg, Mysore, Goa, Shimla, Jaipur, Lonawla and Kerala from Gujarat,” said Rajeev Kale, president and COO-MICE, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. According to tour operators, the trend of festive travelling is growing exponentially. Despite spiralling airfare and high room charges in hotels, people are travelling. “Due to floods in Kashmir, the traffic has moved on to destinations like Shimla and Kerala,” said a citybased tour operator.

Sales of gold jewelry and gold coins pick up as the day nears IANS, NEW DELHI
M
uch to the delight of jewellers, Indian consumers are making a scramble for gold in the build-up to Diwali on October 23 after a lacklustre festive season last year. Sales of gold jewellery and coins in October so far have accelerated in the range of 15-25 percent more than a year before, although it is still early to firm up a precise forecast of demand this Diwali and Dhanteras, considered auspicious for the precious metal purchases. Last year, jewellers were badly hit by a crunch in raw material supplies following imposition of a 10 percent import duty and the central bank’s 80:20 rule, which mandated that at least one-fifth of imported gold must be reserved for re-exports. Many jewellers in Delhi and Mumbai witnessed up to 40 percent drop in sales last Diwali. “After months of slowdown, things are finally beginning to look up,” a spokesperson for Tanishq, the country’s largest jewellery chain, said. “All the purchases that people had postponed are finally being made,” he said, adding that lower gold rates in recent days had
helped accelerate demand. Gold prices in Delhi dropped over eight percent in 2014 so far to `27,370 per ten grams as of October 10, tracking a subdued trend overseas and aiding the sales. As per Mehul Choksi, chairman of Gitanjali Group, jewellery demand is expected to rise this fiscal, but for investment demand to pick up, authorities need to trim the high import duty and also relax the 80:20 rule. Suvankar Sen, executive director at Senco Gold, the largest jeweller in eastern India, said consumers who had deferred purchases in the hope that prices could go down below `25,000 per 10 grams if the new government loosens import restrictions, are back in the market after seeing that authorities are unlikely to intervene. Consequently, with festive demand rising, gold premiums, which had crashed to as low as $1-2 per ounce in July after the Reserve Bank of India allowed more entities to import the precious metal, have now jumped to $12-14 per ounce. Market sources said jewellers are expected to ramp up various discount offers and schemes in the week through Diwali to lure customers.

SOUTHERN DELIGHT
Unlike in north India, Diwali in south is celebrated in the evening IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n the South, Diwali festival often commemorates the conquering of the Asura Naraka, a powerful king of Assam, who imprisoned tens of thousands of inhabitants. It was Krishna who finally subdued Naraka and freed the prisoners. The festival in the south is celebrated in the Tamil month of aipasi (thula month) ‘naraka chaturdasi’ thithi, preceding amavasai. The preparations begin the day before, when the oven is cleaned, smeared with lime, four or five kumkum dots are applied, and then it is filled with water for the next day’s oil bath. The house is washed and decorated with kolam (rangoli) patterns with kavi (red oxide). In the puja room, betel leaves, betel nuts, plaintain fruits, flowers, sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder, scented powder are kept. Crackers and new dresses are placed in a plate after smearing a little kumkum or sandal paste. CELEBRATIONS Morning: Diwali celebrations begin early in the morning with the the eldest member in the family applying sesame oil on the heads of all the family members. Then the family goes out for bath, beginning with the youngest in the family. They emerge with new clothes and then burst crackers, which symbolizes the killing of the demon king Narakasur. Lehiyan: In between there is another ritual called Lehiyan, the bitter concoction, to cleanse the system of its festive over-eating!
Murukku: A puja is performed for the family deities in the morning, which is followed by breakfast consisting of murukku, a sweet dish and, of course, idli or dosa. Some communities believe that when Narakasur was to be killed, Lord Krishna asked him his last wish. Narakasura replied that he wanted to enjoy the last day of his life in a grand manner and hence the festival of lights. That was the beginning and the practice continued since. In the evening, lamps are lighted and crackers burst. As most of the cracker manufacturing units are in Tamil Nadu, there is no dearth of fireworks here. During Thalai Deepavali, the newly weds go to the bride’s parental home for revelry. Taking blessings from the elders, they burst the first crackers of the day. Usually a vast range of crackers are bought, with costs running into thousands of rupees. The Diwali celebrations include a visit to the temple, gifts of clothes and jewelry, gorging on sweets and receiving blessings of elders. The groom’s parents, brothers and sisters come down to join in the celebrations. DIWALI CELEBRATION IN KERALA Traditionally, Diwali celebrations in Kerala are on a low key as there aren’t too many merchant/business families here. The native people of Kerala do not celebrate Diwali. But places in Kerala where prominent Tamil, Bengali and various North Indian communities reside, Diwali is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety. People of these communities arrange grand feasts
In Tamil Nadu, Diwali is known as Naraka Chaturdasi and the month when it is celebrated is called Thula.
and gaily-dressed men, women and children go to temples and fairs, visit friends and relatives. DIWALI IN TAMIL NADU Diwali in the Tamil Nadu is celebrated in the month of aipasi (thula month) ‘naraka chaturdasi’ thithi, preceding amavasai. The preparations for the Diwali begin the day before, when the oven is cleaned, smeared with lime, four or five kumkum dots are applied, and then it is filled with water for the next day’s oil bath. The house is washed and decorated with kolam (rangoli) patterns with kavi (red oxide). For Diwali Festival, in the traditional pooja room, betel leaves, betel nuts, plaintain fruits, flowers, sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder, scented powder is kept. Crackers and new dresses are placed in a plate after smearing a little kumkum or sandal paste. The festival begins with everyone in the family taking an oil bath before sunrise, a custom arising from a belief
that having an oil bath in the morning on the day of diwali is equivalent to taking bath in the Ganges. Before the bath, elders in the house apply gingelly oil on the heads of the younger members. For those hailing from Tanjore, the custom is to first take a small quantity of deepavali lehiyam (medicinal, ayurvedic paste) after the oil bath and then have breakfast. Often sweets are eaten after wearing new
clothes. In almost all houses, items like ukkarai, velli appam, idly, chutney, sambhar, omapudi, boondhi are prepared. For lunch, jangri, pathir peni, or one variety of the poli are made. Crackers are usually burst only after the bath. Meanwhile, kuthu vilaku (oil lamp) is lit in the pooja room. Mats or wooden planks are placed facing east. After naivedhya (offering to the Gods) of the items, a plaintain fruit is given to each member of the family followed by betel leaves and betel nuts. Those who have to perform pithru tharpanam will have a second bath perform the tharpanam and don’t eat rice at night.

MASSMUTUAL PLANS SEMINARS IN FIVE CITIES OF US BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD (MASS) -- Almost three million Asian Indians in the United States are preparing to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, on October 23. For their firms, the holiday takes on an added dimension as the celebration marks the beginning of a new business year. To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali. In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth. It is said the goddess of wealth, known as Lakshmi, visits the homes of devotees on this day, and lamps light the way to welcome her. A MassMutual study found that although 77 per cent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 per cent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies; only 46 per cent have a formal retirement plan. “Entrepreneurial businesses are vital to our growing economic recovery, so it is concerning that so many business owners seem to be sacrificing their own and their family’s financial future,” says Nimesh Trivedi, AsianIndian market head at MassMutual. “With help, business owners can look past the seemingly overwhelming day-to-day demands of running their businesses and establish and meet their long-term financial goals.”

Good content always finds viewers: Shahid Kapoor UMA RAMASUBRAMANIAN, MUMBAI
A
ctor Shahid Kapoor’s Kashmir based drama Haider has crossed the ` 50 crore mark at the box office and he says good content always find an audience. “We didn’t know what to expect from Haider, we just knew it’s a unique film and we wanted to do it. When it got ready, we felt it was an honest film,” Shahid told IANS in an interview. Haider, which marked director Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid’s second successful collaboration after Kaminey, collected over ` 50 core in the first week. “We had faith, trust and pride because it was not an easy film to make. It’s been amazing so far. We were waiting for the audiences’ response, but we knew it’s not an
out and out entertainer so this kind of appreciation from the audience is great. “I have always believed that good content will always find an audience. As an actor you have to take risks and do a film like Haider and when it works, you feel cool about it,” Shahid Kapoor added.
I can’t cast Aamir in ‘Dil 2’, says Indra Kumar MUMBAI: Actor Aamir Khan made many women go weak at the knees after his hit film Dil released in 1990. But the film’s director Indra Kumar says he can’t cast the superstar in its sequel. Asked if he is planning to remake any of his old films, Kumar told IANS: “I will make Dil 2, but I can’t cast Aamir in the film because he can’t fit in that role now. Let’s see who can do justice to the role.” While the project is yet to begin, the Grand Masti director says he will continue to make adult comedies. “When I made Masti, people told me not to make the film and asked ‘Are you crazy?’...Then I also went ahead and made Grand Masti which again worked. For me, audience is important,” he said. — IANS
‘Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami’ deserves a 21-gun salute Film: “Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami”; Cast: Anupam Kher, Divyendu Sharma, Neha Dhupia, Manu Rishi, Aditi Sharma and Uttara Baokar; Directed by Ravindra Gautam; Rating: ****
A
sk anyone. It’s the hardest thing to play dead. Satish Shah did it in the cult comedy Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. Anupam Kher, who plays dead in this week’s release, also played dead in that appalling comedy Rahul Rawail’s Buddha Mar Gaya. Providentially, Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami (ETKS) is closer to Shah rather than Rawail’s film. Its heart beats and bleeds for the innocence that independent India lost when politicians decided to get happily corrupt at the cost of the common
man. Kher plays an Everyman, the role he specialized in when he came into the movies with Saaransh. It’s heartening to see him return to his roots. This is a well-balanced, nimbly executed wake-up call for a nation,
that has for long gone into a state of stupefied slumber. Writer Rahil Qazi’s writing is authentic and amusing. Debutant director Ravindra Gautam handles the inflammatory material with care. He seems to know what we all pretend to not know. That corruption is not a beast from outerspace. It exists within all of us. Kher’s character’s humiliation and death is a moving metaphor for the annihilation of Gandhian values. The film’s plot hinges on a son’s endeavour to fulfil his father’s dying wish. The narrative cuts to the chase without wasting much time. Except for those annoying songs that show up as speed-breakers, the film keeps moving briskly putting across its message to a nation that has lost its values with a farcical ferocity that sometimes leaves us shaken stirred and sober.
The film has some sterling performances, reined-in and yet wacked-out. Anupam Kher, of course. Dead or alive, he acts both the parts with credibly commitment to keeping the flag unfurled. Manu Rishi (last seen being impressively jingoistic in Kya Dilli Kya Lahore) and specially the under-used under-rated Divyendu Sharma, bolster the theme’s vision of a decadent debauched politics . Neha Dhupia as the scheming femme fatale is once again so right in her gait and attitude, you wonder why she doesn’t get more challenging roles. And to see the very talented Uttara Baokar after so long, was reason enough for me to salute the casting director. Here is a film that shovels the dirt that we’ve accumulated in our politics and makes a statement on corruption. — Subhash K.Jha

HICAGO (IL) -- Shree Jalaram Mandir on October 10 hosted a colorful ‘Raas Garba Ramzat’ program with international artist Mayuri Patel and group attended by over 1,000 people. This annual event is celebrated during the festival of Navaratri honoring Goddess Durga. The five-hour dance event was held at Harper College’s gymnasium from 8 pm onwards. The college gymnasium was transformed into a huge dance floor to accommodate hundreds of enthusiastic dancers who came in large numbers to participate. Young children, teens, adults and seniors were seen dressed in colorful Indian clothes apt for the occasion. Navaratri season is never complete without the energetic Garba and Dandiya performances in Chicago which attract large turnouts. This year was no exception, as people thronged the Harper College gymnasium with family and friends to enjoy an evening of dancing and fun. Navratri not only symbolises the victory

of good over evil (Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasur) but it also celebrates the spirit of Indian culture and togetherness. Garba or Dandiya, are dance forms which were earlier performed only in Gujarat, but now they are popular all over the world.
The organizers host this event every year to bring people of all cultures together to celebrate this happy festive season with friends and family. Sponsors and vendors participated by displaying their banners and holding booths to promote their business.

Sri Sri’s three-day visit to Chicago from October 23 BY A STAFF WRITER
C
H I C AG O ( I L ) - - Hi s Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a global humanitarian and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, will visit Chicago during October 23-25. A world peace leader and a happiness expert, Sri Sri’s visit marks a unique opportunity for Chicagoans to take the Art of Living Happiness Program and learn meditation to gain deep insights into managing one’s mind and emotions and live a truly happy life. Sri Sri’s vision of a violence-free and stress-free society has united millions of people around the globe. This trip follows his visits from earlier this year when he launched a multi-city stressfree, violence-free campaign in the US On July 12, Sri Sri had unveiled the global happiness platform called Truly Happy that allows individuals to experience, track and grow happiness.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Sri Sri is now coming to Chicago to empower individuals and strengthen the local community. The Happiness Program teaches practical tools to manage the mind and emotions so that an individual can live with greater purpose and fulfillment. This dynamic workshop allows one to tap vast possibilities within and discover one’s unlimited power and freedom. “An incredible leader who has transformed the lives of many, Sri Sri has offered lifestyle techniques which greatly enhance the quality of one’s mind and hence the quality of one’s life. This is a rare opportunity to spend time with him and experience happiness through the skillful use of the breath,”said Scott Barsotti, president of the US Art of Living Foundation. The centerpiece of the Happiness Program is the Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful technique that uses specific, natural rhythms of the breath to harmonize the body, mind and emotions,
eliminating stress, fatigue, depression and anger. Sudarshan Kriya practitioners have reported better immunity, increased stamina and sustained high-energy levels. Modern medical science has validated the health benefits of this time honored technique. Named one of the five most powerful people in India by Forbes, Sri Sri has inspired a global phenomenon of compassion and service through his initiatives which have impacted the lives of some 300 million people worldwide. He reaches the school students through YES! for Schools that is dedicated to providing youth with a healthy lifestyle. In Chicago, nearly 5000 students across 12 schools have taken this program. The Art of Living center in Chicago serves the local community through a variety of breathing, meditation, yoga, and knowledge programs.

Paris Hilton to act with Hrithik?
Sunny Leone’s
MUMBAI: During her last visit to India, Paris Hilton was inundated with questions about a possible Bollywood film coming her way. And by the looks of her latest tweet, it seems that she may have decided who she wants to star with. After meeting Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan at the launch of Cle Restaurant in Dubai a few days ago and tweeting about it, she was quizzed by friend Sheeraz Hasan (founder of Hollywood.TV) about doing a film with Hrithik and playing his love interest. Paris responded with, “Yes! He’s Hot RT @sheerazhasan: Hey @ParisHilton do u want to be @iHrithik love interest in his next Bollywood movie?” Paris has been approached by various Bollywood producers in the past to star in a Bollywood movie as well as record her next single with an Indian artiste.
‘Leela’ a family drama!
MUMBAI: Filmmaker Bobby Khan has roped in adult star Sunny Leone for his Leela and says his directorial debut is a clean family drama, but adds that the actress’ glamor quotient will be high and he would try for an U/A certificate for the movie. “The script of the film is very strong and it’s a clean family drama, but we do understand that since Sunny is part of the project, there is a lot of expectation from the audience, so I can’t cheat my audience,” Bobby told IANS. The actress had scorched the screen with her bold avatar in Ragini MMS 2 and Jism 2. “All I can say is though it is a family drama, Sunny’s glamor quotient will be high in the film. There are a few scenes in the film which require a little boldness, but we have shot it subtly and not shown it over the top. “As a director I will try my best to fight and get a U/A certificate for the film, so let’s see,” he added.
Evelyn to produce reality show
Alia floored by Parineeti Chopra MUMBAI: Actor Alia Bhatt, who has turned fashion designer with her latest fall winter collection, says she would like to style her contemporary Parineeti Chopra once. The Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania star has tied up with fashion portal Jabong to design the capsule collection. When asked whom she would like to style, the 21-year-old actress said, “I would like to design for Parineeti Chopra. My fashion line is for every girl. A mid twenty or a mid thirty something can wear my clothes.” Alia says her clothing range is the reflection of her own self. “The collection is very simple, it’s very me. I wanted to be involved in this so we sat and discussed a lot. It’s a fall winter collection. So there are lot of sweat shirts. It is very personal and special for me. I want everybody to enjoy this. A lot of importance has been given to animal prints as I love animals,” she said. The actress credits celebrity designer Manish Malhotra behind her fashion line inspiration. “I have worked with Manish Malhotra in my first film. He is a very enthusiastic person and he changes his style with time. He is always excited to do new things,” she said.
NEW DELHI: Actor Evelyn Sharma, who is currently shooting in Thailand for Life Mein Ek Baar, is happy to be part of the travel show. She is also set to produce a show of her own. “Life is so amazing! I would love to be part of more adventurous shows like Life Mein Ek Baar. My favorite part about the show is that it so positive and full of happiness,” Evelyn said in a statement. And if all works out, then the “Yaariyan actor will be soon seen on the small screen again. “Yes, I am all set to make a reality show myself, my team is working on it. I have approached a few channels for the same. If all goes well, then very soon you will hear a big announcement,” she said.
Bebo is a blessing in my life: Karisma MUMBAI: Actor Karisma Kapoor says her sister Kareena is more like a friend to her than a sibling. The 40-year-old actor, who was last seen in 2012 supernatural thriller film Dangerous Ishq, said she and Kareena share a strong bond. “She is my sister and we are very close. I think she is more of a friend to me than just a family member. We share a great bond and she is a blessing in my life,” Karisma told in interview. The Zubeidaa actor, who had a successful career in 90s’ and 2000, says it has been a rare instance when two sisters have successfully worked in the same decade. “I think there has never been a precedence where two sisters in Bollywood have been successful working simultaneously as heroines in same decade or same generation. I think we have been lucky and fortunate to have had great careers,” she said. Though they share a close bond as sisters personally, Karisma says professionally they never interfere in each other’s decision. Asked if she is worried that Kareena is rejecting many film offers after marriage, Karisma supported her sister.

‘Women’s roles have depreciated in films’ Kamalinee is happy that fresh talent is being recognized IANS, CHENNAI
A
ctor Kamalinee Mukherjee, who has spent over a decade in Telugu filmdom, feels the role of women has depreciated in the industry, but she’s happy that at least fresh talent is being recognized. “Over the last decade so much has changed in Telugu cinema, except the role of women. I feel the quality of roles being offered to women has depreciated. But the good news is that the industry has opened doors to fresh talent,” Kamalinee told IANS. “I’m quite happy that smaller films, actors and filmmakers have been welcomed in the last few years. I think it all started with my film Anand and it continues even today. It’s ‘Kamalinee feels nice to see that industry that the industry is warming up to all grows only this,” she added. Kamalinee feels that when change is the industry grows embraced and only “when change is new directors embraced and new directors and actors are are allowed to allowed to do their kind do their kind of of cinema”. She made her cinema’ Telugu cinematic debut with 2004 film Anand. Since then she has starred in memorable films such as Godavari, Happy Days and Gamyam. Kamalinee has had her share of hits and misses. But she feels “you learn from the misses more as it comes to play in your next film. It helps you grow and realize your weaknesses”. While she admits she’s done some bad films too, Kamalinee is still happy that she’s done over a dozen films she’ll always be proud of whenever she looks back at her career.
‘Charan, Ganesh deserve success of Govindudu...’ CHENNAI: Basking in the success of Telugu family drama Govindudu Andarivadele, its director Krishna Vamsi feels that actor Ram Charan and producer Bandla Ganesh deserve to be credited for the success of the film. “When all top heroes are busy doing commercial films, Ram believed in my script and agreed to work in my film. Several producers warned Ganesh to not produce my film, keeping in mind my recent failures. But Ganesh backed my film with full confidence. I think they deserve this success more than me,” Vamsi told IANS.

Charmme is a wonderful dancer: Milton IANS, CHENNAI
F
ilmmaker S.D. Vijay Milton has roped in actor Charmme for an item number in his upcoming Tamil film 10 Enrathukulla as he finds her to be a wonderful dancer, who can add “life” to a song. Charmee has earlier performed special dance numbers in films such as Damarukkam, Naayak and R...Rajkumar. “I’ve seen Charmme perform in some of the songs. I really think she’s a wonderful dancer who can add life to any song with her moves. That’s precisely why I approached her for a special song in my film,” Milton told IANS.
‘Panchami’ most exciting film of my career: Archana IANS, CHENNAI
A
ctor Archana, who has worked in southern movies such as Nuvvostanante Nenoddantanaa, Vegam and Khaleja, says upcoming Telugu thriller Panchami is the most exciting film of her career. “I’m sure that Panchami will make me proud. It’s the most exciting film of my career so far. The film features only one character that’s played by me. It’s very experimental in its approach and that’s what makes it different from other films,” Archana told IANS. Panchami is currently in its post-production phase. “A lot of time is being spent on visual effects. Since there are no other characters, my director wants to make sure that VFX is enhanced for the overall experience. Sound will also play a pivotal part in the film,” she said.
FILM REVIEW | TAMIL
‘Govindudu Andarivadele’: Clichéd age-old family drama Film: ‘Govindudu Andarivadele’; Cast: Ram Charan, Kajal Agarwal, Meka Srikanth, Prakash Raj, Kamalinee Mukherjee, Jayasudha, Rahman, Aadarsh Balakrishna, Rao Ramesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao; Director: Krishna Vamsi; Rating: **
T
he problem with Telugu cinema’s most family stories is that they stick to an ageold story template that has been done to death. Krishna Vamsi’s A still from the film ‘Govindudu Andarivadele’. much anticipated Govindudu Andarivadele is no different than the same genre. All these films are mend a strained relationship films such as Brindavanam, Attar- and have always been about an between members of the same intiki Daaredhi and a few more in individual or character trying to family. An old-fashioned family
story told with a few endearing moments doesn’t make an interesting watch anymore. Maybe audiences warmed up to such stories a decade ago, but they’ve evolved now thanks to their exposure to world cinema. Govindudu Andarivadele displays Telugu filmmakers’ reluctance to dig deep within a genre. There’s enough material readily available from our own lives for an engaging family tale, but rarely do we come across anything realistic. Blame Krishna Vamsi’s sagging career or Ram Charan’s knack for bad stories, Govindudu Andarivadele is a colossal disappointment. — Haricharan Pudipeddi
