US NEWS
Clinton might not be nominee, says WSJ “There was now more than a theoretical chance that Clinton may not be the Democratic nominee for the US presidential elections,” it said IANS, WASHINGTON
A
s the US presidential election draws closer, political commentators have begun to speculate upon likely scenarios with the passage of each day — and the newest theory is very interesting. A recent comment by political analyst Douglas E. Schoen, writing in The Wall Street Journal, says there was now more than a theoretical chance that Hillary Clinton may not be the Democratic nominee for the US presidential elections. The inevitability behind Clinton’s nomination will be in large measure eviscerated if she loses the June 7 California primary to Bernie Sanders. That could well happen, he writes. A recent PPIC poll shows Clinton with a two per cent lead over Sanders, and a Fox News survey found the same result. Even a narrow win would give Sanders 250 pledged delegates or more — a significant boost. California is clearly trending to Sanders, data from mid-May show

that there were nearly 1.5 million newly registered Democratic voters in California since January 1. That’s a 218 percent increase in Democratic voter registrations compared with the same period in 2012, a strongly encouraging sign for Sanders, the commentator figured out. A Sanders win in Cali-
fornia would powerfully underscore Clinton’s weakness as a candidate in the general election. Democratic superdelegates — chosen by the party establishment and overwhelmingly backing Clinton 543-44 — would seriously question whether they should continue to stand behind her candida-
cy, he asked. In recent weeks, the perception that Clinton would be the strongest candidate against Donald Trump has evaporated. The Real Clear Politics polling average has Clinton in a statistical tie with Trump, and recent surveys from ABC News/Washington Post and Fox News show her two and three points behind him, respectively. Clinton also faces growing legal problems. The State Department Inspector General’s recent report on Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State made it abundantly clear that she broke rules and has been far from forthright in her public statements. The damning findings buttressed concerns within the party that Clinton and her aides may not get through the government’s investigation without a finding of culpability somewhere. There are increasing rumblings within the party about how a new candidate could emerge at the convention. John Kerry, the 2004 nominee, is one possibility.
US accused of undermining justice at WTO GENEVA: US objections to the re-appointment of a sitting judge for a second term at the World Trade Organization (WTO) would undermine its independence and effectiveness, the media reported on June 1. The US last week notified other WTO member states that it will not support the re-appointment of Judge Seung Wha Chang, a South Korean, for his second four-year-term at the WTO appellate body, a standing body that hears appeals from reports issued by panels in disputes brought by WTO members. Granting a second term for a sitting member has been common practice since the WTO was formed 20 years ago. Last year, two sitting members from the US and India were granted second terms, Xinhua reported. Washington opposed Chang because he participated in decisions against the US, rather than a lack of judicial competence or independence, the media reported. The venerable Korean member is accused of deviating from the covered General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade/WTO agreements in three cases. “Linking the re-appointment of a member to specific cases could affect the trust,” the six sitting members of the appellate body have said. They lauded Chang for integrity, independence and impartiality.
Trump says he gave $5.6 Consider Clinton’s email scandal: Sanders million to veterans groups IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he donated $5.6 million to veterans associations and criticized the members of the press, whom he said “should be ashamed of themselves” for having doubted that he would keep the promise he made in January to make the donations. “I have never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job,” Trump said at a press conference at his offices in New York’s Trump Tower, EFE news agency reported. “As of this moment, it’s $5.6 million,” the real estate magnate said, adding that “all of the money has been spent”. Trump lambasted the press all during the press conference, calling political reporters “among the most dishonest people I’ve ever met”. He also released the names of a number of organizations to which
U
donations were made, along with the size of those contributions. In late January, Trump made a surprise announcement in Iowa that he would not participate in a debate with other Republican candidates to hold a fundraising event to help veterans. At the event, he said that he had managed to raise $6 million, but several media outlets said weeks later that there was no proof of any donations being made, while many associations confirmed that they had not received any such funds.
S Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said that American voters and superdelegates should take a hard look at the recent report criticizing his rival Hillary Clinton for her controversial emailing practice while taking the helm at the US State Department. “The inspector general just came out with a report. It was not a good report for Secretary Clinton. That is something that the American people, Democrats and delegates, are going to have to take a hard look at,” Xinhua news agency quoted Sanders as saying in an interview on CBS News’s Face the Nation aired on Sunday. A report released by the State Department’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) last week said Clinton, during her tenure as secretary of state under President Barack Obama, failed to comply with the department’s email rules by exclusively relying on a private email
account and server for business. The report provided new ammunition to Clinton’s critics to attack her for not being honest and trustworthy at a time when she is nearly clinching the Democratic Party’s nomination. When asked about the effects of the OIG report, Sanders said he believed superdelegates would keep it in mind, referring to a group of about 700 Democratic party leaders who could vote for any candidate in the Democratic convention
in July. “I don’t have to tell them that. Everybody in America is keeping it in mind, and certainly the superdelegates are,” said the Vermont senator. “The point that I’m going to make to the superdelegates, many of whom, again, came on board long before I was in the race, came on board Clinton’s campaign, is, your job to make sure that Donald Trump is defeated and defeated badly,” Sanders said.

Modi in US again
‘Modi not ‘Shehenshah’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fourth visit to the US is seen as consolidating and celebrating the India-US relationship ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi’s fourth visit to the US next week is seen here as consolidating and celebrating the India-US relationship that has undergone a transformation since 2000 under three presidents. An important dimension of Modi’s June 6-8 visit at the invitation of President Barack Obama will be his address to a joint meeting of the US Congress on June 8 eleven years after Washington revoked his visa under a religious freedom law passed by that very body. Modi, the fifth Indian Prime Minister to address the US Congress starting with Rajiv Gandhi, will also get another rare honor - a lunch hosted by the Republican Speaker Paul Ryan and a reception by the Republican chairs and top Democrats on the House and Senate Foreign Relations panels. “Many people have articulated that the invitation and the visit are really a part of consolidating and celebrating the India-US relationship,” said Arun Singh, Indian ambassador to the US. The visit will consolidate “what has been achieved so far and seeing what more can be done as we move into the next year when there will be transition of the administration in the US and also elections to the US Congress”. It will also celebrate the achievements in the relationship “because in a sense the new phase in IndiaUS relationship was started from 2000 when President (Bill) Clin-

ton went to India,” he noted. Then President George W. Bush transformed it with the landmark Civil Nuclear Deal and Barack Obama with his two visits to India - including the one as chief guest at India’s Republic Day - saying the India-US relationship will be a “defining partnership of the 21st century”. Singh also noted Obama’s articulation of support for India’s membership of the UN Security Council, US support for India’s membership of multilateral export control regimes and advances made in
India-US defence partnership. Modi who lands in Washington on June 6 after a visit to Switzerland, will meet Obama on June 7 to review the progress made in key areas of defence, security and energy over a working lunch at the White House. He will also have an interaction with top corporate leaders and address the annual meeting of the US India Business Council (USIBC) comprised of over 300 top American and Indian companies seeking stronger trade and commercial ties with India.
RAE BARELI/NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has strongly backed her son-in-law Robert Vadra against allegations that he owns a house in London, funded by an arms dealer, and dared the government to probe the matter “unbiasedly”. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of behaving like a “Shehenshah”, the Congress chief also hit out at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for its bash held to celebrate its two years in power. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit back at Sonia Gandhi, saying that Vadra “has the blessings of 10 Janpath” which was the reason behind his wealth. Sonia Gandhi, who was visiting her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, lashed out at the allegations against her son-inlaw: “This is also a political conspiracy. What do you mean by ‘Congress-
mukt Bharat’? Everyday they give excuses and level wrong allegations.” “If this (allegation) is true, then they should conduct an unbiased probe. Everything will become clear,” said an angry Sonia Gandhi. Senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Monday sought a detailed inquiry by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the alleged involvement of Vadra in the 2009 purchase of a ‘benami’ or proxy-owned mansion in London. The Congress chief, training her guns on Prime Minister Modi, said he was prime minister and not an emperor. “Woh pradhanmantri hain, koi shehenshaah nahin ki janta unki saari baatein maane,” she said. The BJP said the Congress president’s defence of her son-in-law vindicates the party’s old charge that whatever Vadra does has the backing of the Gandhi family.

‘Focus on economically backward eastern India’
‘AoL asked to pay Gulbarg massacre case: Rs 4.75 cr compensation’ 24 convicted, 36 freed
BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 2 said his government was emphasizing on the development of the economically backward eastern Indian states to uproot poverty in the region. “We don’t want any state or any region in the country to be devoid of development and change. In the western part of India, there is economic development. But, why is there no development in states like Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha,” asked Modi addressing a massive gathering at Balasore. Modi said Maharashtra,
NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Art of Living (AOL) Foundation to pay the remaining Rs 4.75 crore as environment compensation for damage caused to the Yamuna floodplains due to the World Culture Festival (WCF) in March. The NGT had levied Rs 5 crore environment compensation on the foundation, which had deposited Rs 25 lakh before the three-day event kicked off on March 11 in the Yamuna floodplains in Delhi. The principal bench of Justice Swatanter Kumar dis-
Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Haryana are more developed states than eastern India states of Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha. And that is why all our developmental plans have emphasised on eastern states including Odisha,” said the Prime Minister.
missed the AoL’s plea whereby the foundation offered to pay the remaining amount through a bank guarantee. Meanwhile, the Art of Living said it is exploring the option of challenging the tribunal’s order in the Supreme Court. “We find the verdict unjust and, if need be, after reviewing the order we will go to the Supreme Court. We have not violated any law or done any wrong,” said an AoL statement. The NGT will take up on August 2 arguments on a plea for contempt proceedings against the spiritual guru.
AHMEDABAD: After 14 long years, a special Gujarat sessions court on June 2 convicted 24 people, including Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Atul Vaidya, in the sensational Gulbarg massacre case in which 69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were burnt alive on February 28, 2002. Special sessions court judge P.B. Desai declared 36 of the 60 accused as ‘not guilty’. The court also rejected the prosecution’s conspiracy charge in the Gulbarg case.
An armed mob had set on fire the entire Gulbarg Housing Society in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area, inhabited by members of the minority community, in broad daylight, killing 69 people. While the charred bodies of 39 people were found from the spot after the arson, 30 other people were declared dead by the Special Investigation Team as there was no trace of them 12 years after the incident. The sessions court judge will pronounce the sentences on the convicts on June 6. --IANS

WHITE HOUSE RACE:
Who is most presidential? Come November 8, Donand Trump, who stands 6 feet 2 inches to Clinton’s 5 feet 4 to 7 inches, according to varied calculations, would win hands down...
ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
M
irror, Mirror on the wall, who is the most presidential of them all? That’s the question American voters are asking as they size up the three survivors in the White House race. Supporters of “Dodging Donald” Trump, as critics call the Republican now sitting pretty with magical 1,237 delegates to lock the party nomination, have eyes only for the Manhattan mogul. Diehard backers of mathematically-challenged “Crazy Bernie” Sanders, as the billionaire has dubbed him, have ears only for the self-styled Democratic socialist. And “Clearance Merchandise,” as a columnist described the Democratic frontrunner or “Crooked Hillary” Clinton, as Trump has branded her, too has her own legion of defenders of the faith. Poor Hillary, she thought her coronation as the Democratic nominee was a done deal despite an annoying Bernie snapping at her heels to the chagrin of the party establishment. Then, a State Department independent watchdog’s scathing report on Clinton’s use of a private server at home for official work as secretary of

state sent her “drowning in emails” as the New York Times put it. A gloating Trump “Celebrating 1,237!” was quick to rub it in. The report was “not good” for “Crooked Hillary.” It was “devastating”, said the master of a “fifth grade” speech. Bernie supporters too saw in a parallel FBI probe into Clinton emails an “answer to their prayers” as the Times put it, as the former first lady’s lead in the prized June 7 California primary

Situated some 85 km north of the summer capital on the Srinagar-Leh highway, Sonamarg is also home to the Thajiwas glacier -just a half-day but a difficult trek from here. But that is also shrinking. The heat and pollution coupled with human interference of other kind have been destroying it.” And down below at Sonamarg, some of the big business houses of Kashmir are building hotels and the destruction in the name of development continues endlessly. Situated on the banks of the Sindh river that rises in the foothills of the Zojilla Pass in the Baltal area, Sonamarg is taking the kind of environmental beating it might not be able to take for long. To protect the fragile ecology, the state government has formed a development authority to regulate Sonamarg construction and pre-
quickly evaporated. And when Senator Elizabeth Warren, a key supporter, took up cudgels on her behalf to suggest Trump was “drooling over the housing crisis”, he dismissed her as a Clinton “Pocahontas” and again changed the conversation. When the media questioned him about an “offensive” reference to a Native American notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in the 17th cen-
tury, an unapologetic Trump quipped: “Oh, I am sorry! But Warren has a big mouth.” Going on late night comic Jimmy Kimmel’s show, Trump also promptly accepted a suggestion to debate Sanders before the California primary. “I would love to do that” in a massive arena, said the business mogul provided $10-15 million was raised for a charity with the promise of huge ratings for the host channel.
Then Sanders, who’s peeved that Hillary Clinton was backing out of a planned Democratic debate, jumped on the offer. “Game on,” he tweeted and boasted if Trump did not chicken out, the billionaire would be toast. As the idea of what Democratic media strategist Brad Bannon called a “complete circus,” of a novel inter-party debate, gathered steam, Trump did walk back. He first called it a “joke” and then said now that he had become the Republican top dog it would be “inappropriate” for him to debate the straggling Democrat. Meanwhile, as Trump completed the “hostile takeover” of the Republican party with his magic 1,237, a vanquished “Little Marco” Rubio came out of hiding with an offer to release his pledged delegates “to be helpful” to Trump’s campaign. Saying that “size matters”, it noted the taller candidate has won the popular vote in more than two-thirds of the elections since 1950. And by that measure, come November 8, Trump, who stands 6 feet 2 inches to Clinton’s 5 feet 4 to 7 inches, according to varied calculations, would win hands down -- big or ‘small’ as “Rubio” once insinuated. Let “rattled” foreign leaders be forewarned!
KASHMIR’S SONAMARG
serve its ecology. The officials of the authority say no unlawful construction is allowed and even minor violations, of the approved master plan that has identified green belts and construction sites, are dealt with strictly. The point is whether a comparatively small hill station should have so much construction even if all of it is lawful.
“Not at all. We should not follow the dangerous course of allowing as many visitors to places like Sonamarg as wish to go there every day,” said Mansha Nisar, who teaches environmental science in a Srinagar college. Add to this 300,000 pilgrims for the annual Amarnath yatra who use nearby Baltal as the base
camp to visit the Himalayan cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The mantra to preserve Kashmir’s tourist and heritage sites lies in striking a balance between ecology and business. Let the former dictate the rules or else, places like Sonamarg would only hang in photo frames in the drawing rooms of the rich and the famous.

Germany calls 1915 massacre a ‘genocide’ Turkey calls it ‘historic mistake’ IANS, BERLIN/ANKARA
T
he German parliament, despite a barrage of pressure from the Turkish government, on June 2 approved a symbolic resolution that declares the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turkish forces a “genocide”. Turkey was equally scathing, calling the resolution a “historic mistake”. The Germany parliamentary vote was almost unanimous, with just one MP voting against and another abstaining. The resolution was largely expected and was supported by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. However, she had to skip the vote due to prior commitments. Gregor Gysi, a politician from the Left Party who was critical of Turkey’s treatment of the Kurds who were doing “an excellent job” in fighting Islamic State, said that “Germany was a historical accessory” and has a duty to recognize the mass killings of Armenians in the First World War. “We need to call this what it was — a genocide,” he told the German parliament. “The Bunderstag should not allow itself to be blackmailed by Turkey’s threats.” The news was greeted with delight by dozens of Armenian supporters who had gathered outside the parliament building carrying banners commemorating the genocide. According to the Christian Democratic Union’s Albert Weiler, Germany had
SHORT TAKES Pak PM recovering after heart surgery ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is fast recovering after an open heart surgery in a London hospital on May 31, his family said. Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, said surgery of the prime minister was successful. The PM Office in Islamabad said Nawaz Sharif was shifted to the Intensive-Care Unit after nearly four-hour surgery, Xinhua reported. The office has also issued a post-operation photograph of the prime minister. “Doctors are satisfied that the surgery has been successful more than their expectations,” Maryam told Geo television. She disclosed that her father wanted to undergo surgery after two years but doctors suggested him to do it now.

a “historical duty” to recognize the mass killings of Armenians. “Without this admission, there cannot be forgiveness and reconciliation. Suffering does not know temporary boundaries. Genocide will never remain in the past. By recognizing the genocide, it will force the Turkish government to take a brave step and look into its own history,” he said. Representatives from the Turkish and Armenian embassies were present in the German parliament when the vote took place.
The ruling AK Party in Turkey responded to the slur by saying that the decision taken by the German parliament has seriously damaged relations between the two countries. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus called the resolution a “historic mistake”. Turkey has also recalled its ambassador to Germany after the symbolic resolution was passed. In one last bid on Thursday to try and sway German opinion, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said it would be “irrational” for the Ger-
man parliament to approve such a resolution, while it would test the friendship between the two countries. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had already warned that relations between Ankara and Berlin would suffer if Germany was to recognize the mass killings of Armenians as a genocide. The mass killings began on April 24, 1915, when 250 Armenian intellectuals were detained by Ottoman authorities and later executed in their capital, Constantinople, present-day Istanbul.
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the French efforts to organize a peace summit to restart peace talks with the Palestinians, saying peace is not achieved with international conferences. Netanyahu made the comments at the Bar-Ilan University Faculty of Medicine in northern Israel’s Galilee, Xinhua reported. “The way to peace does not go through international conferences that seek to impose agreements, make the Palestinians’ demands more extreme and thereby make peace more remote,” the prime minister said. He reiterated his position that the only way to achieve peace is through direct talks “without preconditions”.
Civilians trapped in IS-occupied Fallujah IANS, BAGHDAD
I
raq’s Fallujah offensive against Islamic State has temporary ground to a halt as 50,000 people, including 20,000 children, were feared to be trapped inside the city and running out of supplies. The delay was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider alAbadi as the military fears for the safety of the trapped civilians, who have a limited supply of food, water, and healthcare. In footage broadcast on state television, Abadi told military commanders in the operations room near the frontline: “It would have been possible to end the battle quickly if protecting civilians wasn’t among our priorities...

Thank God, our units are at the outskirts of Fallujah and victory is within reach.” The United Nations has previously reported that IS fighters have been using civilians as human shields. Iraq’s troops will remain at the city’s edge until further notice, having encountered heavy resistance from Islamic State fighters. Most of the civilians have been evacuated from the Fallujah, but about 50,000 are still believed to be trapped inside with scant supplies of food, water, and medicine. Around 20,000 are thought to be children, according to UNICEF, the UN’s children’s right agency. “We are concerned over the protection of children in the face of extreme violence,” UNICEF Representative in Iraq Peter Hawkins
said in a statement. “Children face the risk of forced recruitment into the fighting” inside Fallujah. Moreover, the World Food Programme (WFP) said the humanitarian crisis inside the city walls is getting worse. “The city is inaccessible for assistance and market distribution systems remain offline... The only food available does not come from the markets, but from the stocks that some families still have in their homes.” Fallujah saw some of the heaviest fighting during the US-led military intervention of 2003-2011, and in January of 2014, it became first city in Iraq to fall to Islamic State fighters. The extremists declared a caliphate in territories they had seized in Iraq and Syria in late June 2014.

Indian man transforms talent-hunt in Ghana ACCRA: Twenty-four years after he established a company to sell computers and train IT professionals in Ghana, Indian author and businessman Gurdip Hari is spending $1.5 million over the next two years to dramatically change the hunt for talented children. The Healthy Mind International School at Madina, a suburb of Accra, will provide a new form of education that would train children based on their individual talent as part of Hari’s concept of schools for the future. An Indian company, ACEC, based in Ghana, is to immediately begin construction work on the school for the first children to be enrolled in kindergarten in 2018. Speaking at a ceremony to announce the plans, Hari said the school, which is based on his concept of turning education away from making children go through the academic process based on curriculum and testing, will give every child the opportunity to develop his or her individual talent. The choice of siting the school in Madina is itself very significant because it is one of the deprived areas of the capital. “After living in different parts of the world, l have decided to build this school in Ghana because where you live is your home,” he said to explain why he chose the country for his experiment in this new form of educational system.

The Oswals found themselves in significant debt last month when the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issued a departure prohibition on the couple over an unpaid $136 million tax bill. A $50 million house dubbed the “Taj Mahal on the Swan River” was left half-completed by the couple when they were forced to sell their share in Burrup as well as a luxury jet worth tens of millions of dollars and a fleet of luxury cars. The trial has already cost tens of millions of dollars with 25 barristers appearing in court on both sides on Monday. It is expected that the complex trial will run for between three and six months.

R
oyal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lost out to Sunrisers Hyderabd (SRH) by eight runs in a dramatic final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Season Nine on May 29 at the Chinnaswami Stadium. Requiring 209 runs in 20 overs with an asking rate of 12.54, Royal Challengers could only manage 200/7, though it got off to a flying start helped by a pounding Chris Gayle and a stable Virat Kohli. Chris Gayle spearheaded the
chase for Royal Challengers with a superb 38-ball-76. Dominating with the bat, he rarely gave chance to Kohli, so much so that he accounted for 74 of the first 100 runs score by RCB by the end of nine overs. Smashing eight sixes and four fours, Gayle looked like interested in only hitting sixes as long as he was on the crease. The capacity crowd in Chinnaswami Stadium was on the edge of the seat as long as Gayle was firing one six after the other, he looked unstoppable. However, the Gayle show got

The fifth seeded American pair of Bob Bryan and his brother Mike outclassed the 16th seeded Paes and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski 7-6 (12), 6-3 in one hour and 39 minutes in the quarters to enter the last four stage. But that was not to be, Kohli also departed soon after Gayle, castled by Barinder Sran, he scored a 35ball-54, with two sixes and four fours. But what followed later was an utter disappointment and heartbreak for the Royal Challengers. efending champions India will open their 2017 ICC Champions Trophy campaign by taking on arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston on June 4, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on June 1. Placed in group B alongside eight seed Pakistan, fifth seed Sri Lanka and third seed South Africa, the men-in-blue, seeded second, will then face the islanders on June 8 before taking on the Proteas in the final league game on June 11 at The Oval in London. Top seeds Australia head Group A, which also includes fourth seed New Zealand, sixth seed England and seventh seed Bangladesh, who will be returning to this competition for the first time since 2006.
Hosts England will take on Bangladesh in the tournament opener on June 1 at The Oval. The 18-day tournament, running from June 1 to 18, will witness the top eight sides battling it out for the trophy. The cut-off date for qualifying was September 30, 2015, which means the West Indies are out of the race. The top two sides from each group will progress to the semifinals, which will be played at Cardiff and Edgbaston on June 14 and 15 respectively, with The Oval hosting the final. There will be a reserve day for the final. Announcing the schedule, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said, “The ICC Champions Trophy is a short and sharp event, which is followed and enjoyed by the spectators and players alike.”

he ‘lotus’ finally bloomed on the floor of the Kerala assembly when 86-year-old veteran BJP leader O. Rajagopal took oath as a legislator on June 2. The first session of the 14th Kerala assembly opened on June 2, and the day was devoted to the swearing-in of members. The twoday session ends on June 4, which has been kept for the election of the speaker. In the May 16 assembly poll, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Democratic Front swept the polls winning 91 seats, with the rival Congress-led United Democratic Front ending up with 47. CPI-M leader Pinarayi Vijayan, 72, was sworn in along with 18 cabinet ministers on May 25. The LDF and UDF had time and again claimed in their poll campaign that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not win a single seat in the polls. On June 2 morning, Rajagopal was the cynosure of all eyes when along with party workers he paid tribute at the statues of Vivekananda, Ayyankali, Martyrs Column and made a quick tour of his Nemom assembly constituency. Wardha army ammo depot blast toll 18 NAGPUR: The toll in June 1 massive fire and explosion at India’s largest ammunition depot in Pulgaon, in Maharashtra’s Wardha district, climbed to 18 with the bodies of two more persons recovered early Wednesday. One person is reported missing in the tragedy, sources said. The bodies of the two persons — whose identities have yet to be established — were found in a nearby water tank where they were apparently thrown by the blast impact. Work on clearing up the
debris and assessment of damage continued on June 2. The cause of fire, accompanied by a deafening blast — which was heard over 10 km away and damaged several homes — is being investigated.
to field young legislator V.P. Sajeendran as their candidate. Though the victory of Sreeramakrishnan is a foregone conclusion, all eyes are on the stand to be taken by Rajagopal and seven-time legislator P.C. George, who in the past was with the LDF and UDF but this time won the polls as an independent candidate. The new house has 83 legislators, who were members in the 13th Kerala Assembly, while 44 are new faces. Thirteen lawmakers are returning after a gap. There are eight women in the treasury benches, while there are none in the opposition benches.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress in Kerala has no “issues of factionalism”, said party leader Ramesh Chennithala following his selection as the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly. “It was an extraordinary decision taken by former chief minister Oommen Chandy that he is not interested in taking up the post of the leader of opposition,” Chennithala told reporters here. “Following that it came to me and my selection was unanimous. There are no issues of factionalism in the party now,” he said. Chennithala was selected as the new Leader of Opposition on Sunday in a marathon five-hour meeting of the 22 newly elected legislators of the Congress in the presence of three representatives of the ‘high command’ — Sheila Dikshit, Mukul Wasnik and Deepak Babaria. It was reported that there was disagreement in the state party leadership over Chennithala’s candidature even before the high command had started its deliberations. K. Muralidharan, a former Pradesh Congress Committee president, handed over a note to V.M.
Sudheeran, president of the state unit, protesting against Chennithala’s candidature. Muralidharan reportedly said Chennithala and Chandy had agreed on the choices for Leader of Opposition and Chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF), which the Congress leads, rendering the parliamentary party meeting a pointless affair. In the meeting, Chandy suggested the name of Chennithala and was supported by V.D. Satheesan and others. Chennithala said that power always alternates between the two traditional rivals in Kerala — LDF and UDF — and his party’s hope that it would be able to break this pattern had been belied.
Jayalalithaa’s acquittal in graft case unsustainable, Karnataka tells SC IANS, NEW DELHI
K
arnataka on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the state high court judgment acquitting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others in disproportionate assets case was unsustainable both on facts and law and defeated the very purpose of cleansing the public life. The top court is hearing appeal by the Karnataka government challenging the acquittal of Jayalalithaa, her aide N. Sasikala Natrajan and her two relatives V.N. Sudhakaran and Elavarasi by the Karnataka High Court. They were accused of allegedly amassing disproportionate asserts to the tune of Rs. 66.65.crores during her first term as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996. Describing the defense offered by Jayalalithaa and three others as “cock and bull story”, the vacation bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy
was told that accepting the arguments by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister would amount to throwing the anti-corruption law - Prevention of Corruption Act - into the dustbin. As arguments by Karnataka government were concluded, the court said that one of the three options it may exercise would be either to uphold the high court verdict
acquitting Jayalalithaa and three others, reverse the high court verdict and restore the conviction or still after re-appreciating the entire evidence, direct fresh trial or remit for the matter to the high court for fresh consideration. The bench outlined the three options available to it after senior counsel Dushyant Dave appearing for Karnataka described the judgment acquitting Jayalalithaa and others as “perverse beyond imagination”, devoid of reasoning and based on “conjectures and surmises”. He told the court it had the three options available to it but could not re-appreciate the evidence to find faults with the trial court judgment of conviction. Telling the court that the burden of proof of the legitimacy of the sources of the income was on the accused, Dave said merely that the IT department had accepted their returns does not attach legitimacy to their incomes and assets.

IADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa, 68, was on May 23 sworn in for the sixth time as the Tamil Nadu chief minister in a packed hall in Madras University as thousands lined up on the roads outside. She was administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor K. Rosaiah. Jayalalithaa will head a 29-member ministry in the 15th Tamil Nadu assembly. She was sworn in as chief minister for the sixth time in her political career. Jayalalithaa later went to the Secretariat here to sign some papers. Rosaiah also administered oath of office to her council of ministers, days after the AIADMK-led alliance won the May 16 assembly election which saw a multi-cornered contest. Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Pon Radhakrishnan, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, industrialists and other personalities attended the swearing in ceremony. A large number of people gathered at the venue. People lined up along both sides of the road from Jayalalithaa’s residence at Poes Garden through the stretch from Kamaraj Salai on the Marina up to

Meanwhile, in an effort to fulfil her poll promise of phased implementation of liquor prohibition in the state the chief minister, soon after being sworn-in, announced
closure of 500 liquor shops. She also ordered reduced the working time of the liquor outlets by two hours. While the Congress won 15 seats, DMK won two seats in the 30-member assembly. The All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) only won eight seats and the AIADMK grabbed four. An independent candidate was also elected. With the people’s verdict going against him, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy submitted his resignation to Lt.Governor A.K. Singh here. Speaking to reporters Rangasamy, who was re-elected from the Indira Nagar seat, said he had submitted his cabinet’s resignation. Prior to the elections, he said his alliance is with the people and not with any other political party. In 2011, AINRC had an alliance with AIADMK. The Congress-DMK combine were upbeat about winning the polls as factors like closure of factories, loss of jobs and lack of infrastructure development played against the AINRC government. the 30-member assembly. The first woman to join the elite Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, Bedi held key positions in her career, including Inspector General (Prisons) at Delhi’s highsecurity Tihar jail. Known for her administrative experience and integrity, her work in one of Asia’s largest jails won her the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1994. She was credited for introducing yoga, meditation, literacy drive, computer skills, feedback boxes for the inmates during her stint at Tihar and is often said to have successfully transformed the prison into a “reformatory”. Also sworn-in were 18 cabinet ministers — 11 from the CPI-M, four from CPI, and one each from the Congress-S, Janata Dal-S and the Nationalist Congress Party. Departing from tradition, this is the second time that the swearing in was held outside the Raj Bhavan complex — the official residence of the Kerala governor. In 2006, V.S. Achuthanandan had opted for his swearing-in at the Central Stadium, which was done to ensure that people of the state could come and witness the event. Actor Vidya Balan stressed the need to construct toilets in rural areas, while Raveena Tandon, participating in a panel discussion, stressed how education can lead women towards better living. In his speech, Modi targeted Congress over alleged corruption during the UPA rule and said his government will provide LPG connection to five crore rural women by 2019. In a veiled attack on Congress and parties critical of the government, Modi said some will just oppose his government for political reasons. “Two things have emerged in the last 15 days. One is ‘Vikasvad’ (development) and the other is ‘Virodhvad’ (opposition). What is the reality, people can judge for themselves”, he said. Comparing corruption to a termite, Modi said his government had taken series of steps to tackle it including making payments through direct benefit transfer and using Aadhar. He said the government had saved leakage of Rs.15,000 crore in LPG subsidy, identified over 1.62 crore fake ration cards and checked other malpractices such as appointment of fake teachers. “In broad terms we have been able to plug leakages of Rs.36,000 crores,” he said.

‘Seen great highs, lows and still soldiered on’ IANS, NEW DELHI
H
is struggle to overcome stammering during grown up years, broken marriage with childhood sweetheart Sussanne Khan and his ongoing legal battle with actress Kangana Ranaut has not changed Hrithik Roshan’s positive outlook towards life. As he looks back, Hrithik sees himself as an evolved person, who inspite of experiencing highs and lows in his life, has still “soldiered on”. “I constantly believe in evolving as a human being, an actor and a performer. As I look back, I see
myself as an evolved person who has seen great highs and lows and still soldiered on,” Hrithik told
IANS in an email interview. The actor is currently in news for his legal spat with Kangana. The two, who were apparently dating in the past, slapped a legal notice against each other for tarnishing their respective images. Issues began when Kangana hinted at Hrithik being her “ex” when she said in an interview that she fails to understand “why exes do silly things to get your attention”. The topic in discussion was Hrithik’s hand in getting Kangana replaced in the project by Sonam Kapoor in “Aashiqui 3”.
In an indirect dig to that, Hrithik had later tweeted: “There are more chances of me having had an affair with the Pope and any of the (I’m sure wonderful) women the media has been naming. Thanks but no thanks.” This set the stage for their legal war. On being asked how his good or bad times have influenced him as an actor or as a human being, he chose to let it go unanswered, but said that while everybody wants to change something about their lives, they compromise with situation and time.
‘Veerappan’: Brilliant camerawork engages you Razak’s brother Shehzad Khan made the announcement in a Facebook post on June 1, triggering a wave of condolences on social networking sites. Razak suffered a heart attack. The funeral was performed at the Nariyalwadi cemetery in Byculla on June 2. Tall, thin and lanky, with a hippie style haircut, Razak was first seen in “Roop Ki Rani, Choron Ka Raja” in 1993 and appeared in comic roles in several movies. More than his real name, his screen character names became his trademark as he enacted memorable comic scenes beside some of the biggest actors.

resented in a docudrama style, Director Ram Gopal Varma’s “Veerappan” is a true story on the life of the dreaded sandalwood smuggler, Koose Muniswamy Veerappan who was wanted by the police of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and was famously addressed as Veerappan. The film offers a dispassionate account of his life. The film begins on a cynical note with a quote from Voltaire with states, “A society gets a criminal it deserves.” The script written by R.D. of Tamil Nadu Police to nab the forest brigand and his associates. The film too is narrated from the Police officer’s point of view in a non-linear fashion starting from April 05, 2004 and captures the
events of Veerappan’s life till his death on October 18, 2004, in a drab manner. Much of the screenplay is generic and one-dimensional in nature. Apart from killing, poaching of
Elephant tusks and ambushing the police, it does not give any insight of Veerappan’s personal life. While the first half of the film is engaging, the second half drags. Sandeep Bharadwaj essays Veerappan’s character with sluggish ease. It is amusing to watch him with his handle-bar moustache literally dress up and emulate Veerappan. But unfortunately, not much emphasize is given to him, as an actor. Sachiin Joshi plays the tough police officer from whose point of view the story is narrated.

‘Mor bani thangaat kare’ to wow Chicago
BY BY HI INDIA TEAM HICAGO, IL-Chicago Gujarati community taken for a ride by small time Gujarati shows promoter from Chicagoland area. It is learnt by Hi India from the Mor Bani Thangaat Kare – A Gujrati Music program nationally promoted by Ohmkara Theater Group. It was surprising to Ohmkara that any Tom, Dick and Harry with no written confirmation, signed contract or otherwise authorization to promote and organize the show in Chicago- not only announce the date of show as June 3, 2016, start selling the tickets and further re-sale the show to other interested parties. This was also interesting to note that same buyer for the show has been duped for large some of the amounts which was collected from the seniors and other members of his organization.

“Selling Dirt by Panning Gold attempt by Show Promoter of Chicago” This was also brought to the notice of Hi India by Tushar Patel of Ohmkara organization, that Chicago organizers have to have clearance from Immigration Services and obtain P3 visa for the performing artist. It also surprised him, that in the absence of all this how come a Chicago organizer announce the show, dupe the community and show buyer and ignore the legal requirements of the land /

with authorities. This is the wake up time of organizers to correct their acts and do the things as permitted by law of land. Tushar Patel, in his views think of this
as criminally damaging the revenue by unauthorized announcing the parallel same show with same anchor performer, within a span of week time. This not only damages the credibility of Ohmkara and the revenue as community becomes suspicious. Though at this time Ohmkara organization is concentrating on promotion of the great musical show, but may contemplate criminal complaint and revenue damages recovery from erring party. Though all these activities come under an un fair business means and can be challenged in court of law by confusing and duping the community, the fake show organizers have silently went underground

COMMUNITY NEWS/east coast Indian to be deported South Asians stand by Hillary Clinton after credit card scam
2
FRIDAY, JUNE 01, 2016
BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- South Asians for Hillary hosted a happy hour for their launch event in New Jersey. The free event was a way for the South Asian community to become more active in the upcoming presidential elections, build support for Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, and show that the community is an influential voting bloc in the American electoral process. The South Asians for Hillary New Jersey Launch event was held on May 17 at Curry On in Jersey City, and about 100 people from the New Jersey South Asian community attended. Supporters came from throughout the state, including Hudson, Middlesex, Passaic, Bergen and Union counties. Jersey City Deputy Mayor Marco Vigil and Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro were also in attendance and spoke at the event. “We were truly surprised by the overwhelming turnout at our New Jersey launch event,” said South Asians for Hillary New Jersey Co-Chairs Amit Jani, who hosted the event. “It’s gratifying to see that the South Asian community would like to get more involved in the electoral process, many people asked what they can do from making phone calls to knocking on doors and urging their neighbors from the South
J
P Asian community to vote as well. The South Asian community’s clout as an evergrowing influential voting bloc is becoming clear to establishment politicians, and we should continue to work towards further increasing our community’s voice.” The event, which was also hosted by South Asians for Hillary New Jersey CoChair Dinesh Suryawanshi and Jersey City Lead Bhavesh Patel, featured surrogates for Hillary including former New York City Deputy Public Advocate and Girls Who Code Founder Reshma Saujani, former Kansas State Representative Raj Goyle, and Hillary for America Director of Women’s Outreach Mini Timmaraju. “It’s not enough to just say you support Hillary Clinton,” said Saujani, who also
founded South Asians for Kerry in 2004. “You need to go knock on doors, make phone calls and write checks to make sure that our community’s voice is heard.” Raj Goyle, the first South Asian elected in Kansas, also echoed this sentiment of getting involved and being active with the upcoming elections. He stressed his family’s own immigrant experience and the importance of the South Asian community in the upcoming primary election in June and general election in November. It’s time that we elect a candidate that will support our community, who has stood with South Asian and who will continue to do so going forward, mentioned Timmaraju.
Indian-owned restaurant, jewelry shop gutted BY A STAFF WRITER ANTA CLARA, CA-Indian vegetarian restaurant Radhe Chaat and a jewelry shop Kumar Jewelers were among several businesses that were burnt down in a devastating fire at the Rancho Shopping Center on El Camino Real, in Santa Clara, California, last week. The owner of the restaurant Prakash Patel watched his 4-year-old restaurant go up in flames. Patel, who has been in the restaurant business for almost 20 years, said he planned to open again. Several owners were visibly distraught by the fire and broke into tears. The 5-alarm fire destroyed eight businesses – including Spring Foot Spa, Seoul Rice Cake, and Kumar Jewelers. The strip mall is located on El Camino Real between Pomeroy Avenue and Lawrence Expressway and was the home of about a dozen businesses, including a salon, jewelry store, spa and restaurants, reported Mercury News.
BY A STAFF WRITER RESCOTT, AR -- An Indian man, who worked as a former gas station manager, and was part of a scheme using stolen credit-card numbers to make hundreds of thousands in phony gas purchases has been ordered to pay more than $150,000 in restitution. He will be deported to India soon. Jay Patel last week appeared for sentencing before US District Judge Susan Hickey alongside his Little Rock lawyer Brooke Steen. He was one of the three men charged in the use of stolen Ryder Corp. credit-card numbers to make fraudulent gas purchases at Horizon Food Mart in Prescott during 2009-2011. Horizon has since closed its doors. Court documents show that Patel was a manager at the gas station when Kenneth Luke, a former driver for Ryder, took the stolen credit cards to him with a plan to use the ill-gotten card numbers to pay for gas that was never pumped. The proceeds of the sales were split between Luke and Patel. When Patel left his job, he trained the store’s new manager, Sadiq Lakhani, to use the card numbers in the same manner. From that point, the profits were divvied between Luke and Lakhani. Documents in Lakhani’s and Luke’s cases state an investigation was launched by the FBI and the Arkansas State Police after Ryder officials noticed a large number of purchases charged to the company originated with Horizon. Texarkana Gazette reported that investigators conducted video surveillance and tracked the credit-card numbers. They were able to determine the drivers to whom the numbers were assigned were actually in other states at the times of multiple purchases in Arkansas. Lakhani was sentenced to six months in federal prison, six months home detention and ordered to pay $581,754.88 in restitution jointly with Luke in September 2014. Hickey ordered Patel to pay $159,168.45 in restitution jointly with Luke. In addition to the combined restitution of $740,923.33, Luke was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison. Patel was sentenced by Hickey to time served, or 14 months, plus 10 days. The extra 10 days is meant to give authorities a chance to transfer Patel into Immigration Customs and Enforcement custody. Hickey said Patel was expected to be deported.
S
Man strangles woman The fire was reported at 2:50 a.m. and required mutual aid from the San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara County fire departments, according to Santa Clara Fire Chief Bill Kelly. Fire officials believe the flames quickly spread through the attic of the 50-year-old
center, reported Mercury News. Only five businesses escaped the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported. Firefighters made sure there was no one inside, then they got out just in time.

South Asian detainees ‘tortured’, ‘abused’
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An article in ‘The Guardian’ has detailed reports of abuse and torture of South Asian detainees who were deported to India, Bangladesh, and Nepal on an April 3 flight. The article written with support and coordination from DRUM - Desis Rising Up & Moving, documents the stories directly from the people who were deported and suffered this abuse during the deportation. Those interviewed reported being tied up and stuffed into body bags like the ones used to carry dead bodies. Several of the men also reported seeing or experiencing being given electric shocks, and witnessing other detainees being kicked and punched. “Several detainees said there were hundreds of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers present during the removals,
N
and that many were laughing or swearing at the deportees as the scene unfolded, even filming it on their phones.” Many of these men, especially Punjabi Sikhs from India and Bangladeshis associated with the opposition Bangladesh National Party, have been deported back to life-threatening danger. Some of the men deported to Bangladesh that DRUM is in contact with report still being in hiding for fear of being targeted by the police, traffickers, or people affiliated with
the ruling Awami League Party. Many of those likely deported were the same detainees who launched the #FreedomGiving hunger strikes last Fall out of fear of what would happen if returned to the countries they fled from. The strikers also wanted to bring attention to the discriminatory treatment they were receiving in detention and in immigration proceedings as South Asians or as Muslims, with excessively long detention periods, low rates of parole, and high rates of bond amounts. DRUM is now launching a drive to raise funds for the deportees many of whom are still living in hiding and have still not contacted their families out of fear. DRUM is also working to push for congressional investigation and action on the prolonged detentions of South Asian migrants, the interference in their asylum cases, and the abuse during deportations.

To determine how high the risk actually is of enthusiasm at a football match triggering a stroke, the group of researchers from Lisbon examined data from 2012 to 2015. The study focused on hospital statistics around crucial matches of the three best Portuguese clubs. As it turned out, there were 72 strokes on and after match days and 52 during comparable periods when no matches were played. “The absolute number of strokes during football matches may have been higher but it was not an above-average outlier,” Borbinha noted. The findings were presented at the second Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

You are not at higher stroke risk LONDON: Being excited for your favorite football team, rooting for them and suffering vicariously with them may not put you at higher risk of getting a stroke, suggests new research. The number of strokes that occur on days with major matches is not significantly higher than on days when no football is played, the findings showed. “Our data, therefore, furnishes no significant indications of a correlation between enthusiasm for football and increased risk of stroke,” said study author Claudia Borbinha from Hospital Egas Moniz, Lisbon, Portugal. Many studies suggest that stress during crucial matches can trigger heart attacks or strokes in passionate football fans.

“However, this experiment has shown us that growing reliance on portable technology for entertainment and affirmation, even when on holiday, is blocking our chance to refresh our relationships,” Sydow noted. Conducting accompanying scientific research in response to the survey findings, Sharif Mowlabocus from Centre of Sexual Dissidence at University of Sussex
found that rather than identifying the bedroom as a romantic setting, many couples spoke about the hotel bedroom as a location for intense devise use, due to the free WiFi access. Mowlabocus also indicated that for couples, there is evidence that “the use of a device by one partner encourages device use by the other partner”, thus exacerbating the issue.
More porn can make you religious IANS, NEW YORK
C
all it bizarre, but researchers from the University of Oklahoma have claimed that those who watch porn more than once a week tend to become more religious and it may be because of guilt associated with it. According to lead researcher Samuel Perry, assistant professor of sociology and religious studies, exposure to pornography may inspire guilty feelings, especially if a person is violating the rules of their religion. “As pornography viewing increases, people may find ways to rationalize their behavior or even turn to religion to try and overcome the behavior that is making them feel guilty,” he noted in a paper appeared in the Journal of Sex Research. To reach this conclusion, the researchers followed the participants over a period of six years and measured their pornography use and religiousness along the way. The sample included a nationally representative group of 1,314 adults who answered questions about their pornography use and
their religious habits, Medical Daily reported. “After controlling factors like age and gender, use of pornography was associated with low religiousness at the end of the study until the rate of consumption became more frequent than once a week. At this point, religiousness increased,” the study noted. While scholars typically assume that greater religiosity leads to less
frequent pornography use none have empirically examined whether the reverse could be true, the authors noted. “The findings suggest that viewing pornography may lead to declines in some dimensions of religiosity but at more extreme levels may actually stimulate, or at least be conducive to, greater religiosity along other dimensions,” Perry explained.

Chemical in plastic may weaken children’s teeth irreversibly LONDON: Chemicals commonly found in plastics and fungicides may be weakening children’s teeth by disrupting hormones that stimulate the growth of dental enamel, says a study. For the study, the researchers examined the effects of two endocrine disruptors — chemicals that interfere with mammalian hormones. Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most prevalent, found in every-day items including refillable drink bottles and food storage containers. Vinclozolin is anoth-
er endocrine disruptor that was commonly used as a fungicide in vineyards, golf courses and orchards. The researchers from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research gave rats daily doses of BPA alone or in combination with vinclozolin, equivalent to an average dose a human would experience daily, from birth till they were thirty days old. They then collected cells from the rats’ teeth surface and found that BPA and vinclozolin changed the expression
of two genes controlling the mineralization of tooth enamel. In part two of their experiment, the team cultured and studied rat ameloblast cells, which deposit enamel during the development of teeth. They found that the presence of sex hormones boosted the expression of genes making tooth enamel, especially male sex hormones. As BPA and vinclozolin are known to block the effect of male sex hormones, the findings reveal a mechanism by which endocrine disruptors could weaken teeth.

self-esteem and reduced mobility. On the other side, depression may also lead to obesity as such people tend to engage in “emotional binge eating” to deal with the pain of rejection, have poor sleep patterns and turn into couch potatoes. “Some people especially suffering with atypical depression tend to eat more, sometimes in binge pattern. Owing to increased eating, there is weight gain which leads to further exacerbation of depressive symptoms, explains Ashish Kumar Mittal, MD psychiatry from the All

Every cigarette rots you, inside out RAJAT ARORA, NEW DELHI
G NEW DELHI: The chances of bedwetting by a child increases by 5075 per cent if their parents had the same problem in their childhood, leading paediatricians said. The likelihood of a child exhibiting nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) is about 50 per cent if one parent had the same problem in the early years. That probability jumps to 75 per cent if both parents could not control their bladder while sleeping during their childhood.
Increased appetite or weight gain, sleeplessness or excessive sleep, fatigue or weakness and anxiety are general symptoms of depression. People suffering from depression generally eat in binge pattern to comfort themselves but it may be comforting only for a while as it becomes a cycle of eating more to feel better — then feeling worse.
ory pictures on cigarette packets depicting the dangers of smoking have helped people kick the butt. But despite all the images of the diseased lungs and heart, the number of girls taking to the habit of smoking is on the rise. One of the prime responsibilities and a large opportunity in public health in the 21st century is to prevent the increase in smoking among women. In what could sound alarming, according to the WHO reports, tobacco smoking currently kills five million people a year worldwide and, according to estimates, will probably kill eight million people a year between now and
2030 and one billion over the course of the 21st century. The World No Tobacco Day was a theme initiated in 2010 with an intention to draw a relation
between gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing cigarettes to women. This theme was chosen “to draw particular attention to the harmful effects of
tobacco marketing towards women and girls”. And this continues to be observed year-on-year. The most common time when women initiate smoking is in their teens, and the number of adolescents who initiate smoking increases every year from grades nine through 12. Moreover, there is growing evidence that the reasons girls initiate smoking is different from the reasons why boys begin. Many of the factors that contribute to smoking initiation have been elucidated; the strongest appear to be peer smoking and parent smoking. Parent connectedness also plays a vital role. Adolescents desire greater connectedness to parents, school, and community.
