denied that the tech giant favors the more progressive political currents, in contrast to what some legislators and media outlets have claimed, in his first appearance before the US Congress. “I lead this company without political bias and work to ensure that our products continue to operate that way. To do otherwise would go against our core principles and our business interests. We are a company that provides platforms for diverse perspectives and opinions — and we have no shortage of them among our own employees,” Pichai told the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Google CEO said that Google does “want to allow for diverse perspectives and opinions, but we have rules of the road. When we find violations on our policies, we do remove those videos x (from YouTube),” Efe reported. In recent months, the committee headed by Republican Sen. WASHINGTON: US Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, in an effort to understand how Google search algorithms work, asked its CEO Sundar Pichai why so many pictures of President Donald Trump appear when she does a Google search for “idiot”. “Right now, if you Google the word ‘idiot’ under images, a picture of Donald Trump comes up. I just did that,” the California Democrat told Pichai during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday here. “How would that happen? How does search work so that would occur?” Lofgren asked Pichai, according to the Washington Post. The Google CEO — who was at
the hearing to address allegations of political bias in his company’s widely used search engine — said the results were based on billions of keywords ranked according to over 200 factors such as relevance, popularity, how others were using the search term, to determine how to best match a query with results. “So it’s not some little man sitting behind the curtain figuring out what we’re going to show the user?” Lofgren asked. “It’s basically a compilation of what users are generating.” Republicans have long accused Google of political bias, which the company has strongly denied. In August, Trump said in a tweet that a Google search for “Trump

In April, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also faced lawmakers’ questions, although on that occasion they focused on the scandal involving Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that gained unauthorized access to 87 million Facebook user accounts. On Monday, Google announced that it had decided to move up the closure of its social networking platform Google+ to April 2019 after detecting a new security breach that exposed the private information of 52.5 million users.

Cohen sentenced to three years in jail Prosecutors had asked for a prison term of between 51 and 63 months due to ‘seriousness’ of the issue IANS, NEW YORK
U
S President Donald Trump’s former longterm personal attorney, Michael Cohen was sentenced here on Wednesday to 36 months in prison for tax fraud and campaign finance violations arising from payoffs he made during the 2016 campaign to women who claimed to have had affairs with the then-candidate. Prosecutors had asked for a prison term of between 51 and 63 months due to the “seriousness” of Cohen’s violations of election laws, Efe reported. The lawyer received a two-month sentence, to be served concurrently,
BRIEFS Strategy to fight WMD terrorism WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday approved the National Strategy for Countering WMD Terrorism, in a bid to counter extremist groups’ attempt to use Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) against the US. According to a statement issued by the White House, the new strategy marked Trump’s “decisive step” to counter WMD threat posed by terrorists against the US by highlighting “the urgency of placing chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons beyond the reach of the world’s most dangerous people.” This strategy is “the first-ever comprehensive, public description of the US Government’s approach to combating WMD terrorism,” the White House said, Xinhua reported.
Nauert nominated as US envoy to UN WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced the nomination of State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to succeed Nikki Haley as US ambassador to the UN. “She’s very talented, very smart, very quick, and I think she’s going to be respected by all,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. The US President praised Nauert for the “great job” she has done as State Department spokeswoman, Efe news reported. —IANS

Michael Cohen came to court on Wednesday accompanied by his wife and two children
Cohen admitted to Mueller that he lied when he told a congressional committee that an initiative to build a Trump Tower in Moscow ended in January 2016, months before the
real estate mogul secured the Republican presidential nomination. The attorney admitted that discussions about the project continued until 2016 and that Trump and members of his family were aware of those contacts. Cohen came to court on Wednesday accompanied by his wife and two children. Judge William H. Pauley III, who praised Cohen’s cooperation with authorities, also sentenced Trump’s close collaborator, the first to be sent to prison, to pay a fine of $50,000. Cohen -- who during his final 10minute statement to the court on Wednesday said that his “weakness” had been to provide “blind loyalty to the man that caused me to choose

In his statement, Cohen also took “full responsibility” for his crimes, “for each act that I pled guilty to: The personal ones to me and those involving the President of the Unit-
ed States of America.” Before handing down the sentence, Judge Pauley also emphasized that, as an attorney, Cohen should have been aware that what he was doing constituted crimes and said that he had prospered in his career by getting access to “rich and powerful” people to the point where he became one of them.
Stormy Daniels ordered to pay Trump’s attorneys IANS, NEW YORK
A
federal judge in California has ordered pornstar Stormy Daniels to pay nearly $300,000 in fees, costs and sanctions to the lawyers representing President Donald Trump in the defamation suit she brought against Trump earlier this year. Trump’s attorney, Charles Harder, had asked for a total of nearly $780,000 from the adult film actress -- $389,000 in attorney fees and another $389,000 in sanctions in a hearing last week, CNN reported. In a statement, Harder called Tuesday’s ruling “a total victory for the President”. “The court’s order, along with the court’s prior order dismissing
US President Donald Trump
Stormy Daniels’ defamation case against the President, together constitute a total victory for the President, and a total defeat for
Stormy Daniels in this case,” Harder said. The defamation suit — separate from the original lawsuit about the
non-disclosure agreement Daniels signed with former Trump attorney Michael Cohen — was brought earlier this year after the President called an allegation by Daniels that an unknown man threatened her in a parking lot to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump a “total con job” in a tweet. Daniels has claimed that she and Trump had an affair in 2006. Trump has denied the allegation. Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti said the ruling Tuesday was a partial win for him and his client. “Trump asked for $800k in attorneys’ fees, costs and sanctions from the minor defamation case. The ct awarded well less than 1/2, recognizing that the request was gross & excessive,” Avenatti said.
‘Trump’s unpredictability asset in UN diplomacy’ IANS, WASHINGTON
O
utgoing US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said that President Donald Trump’s unpredictability and mercurial nature was often an asset in UN diplomacy. “If I need to pick up the phone and say this is what I’m gonna to do, are you good with this? We kind of partnered in that,” she said in an interview on Wednesday. “And so he would like ratchet up the rhetoric and then I would go back to the ambassadors and say, ‘You know he is pretty upset. I

can’t promise you what he is going to do. I’ll tell you, if we do these sanctions, it will keep him from going too far’,” Politico quoted Haley as saying. By harnessing Trump’s unpredictability to her advantage in diplomatic negotiations, Haley said she was just “trying to get the job done... by being truthful but also by letting him be unpredictable and not showing our cards”. Haley denied on Wednesday that she was leaving after two years on the job because she had higher political ambitions or because of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s
probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, telling in the interview that her life had been a series of “fun surprises” and that she looked forward to “sleeping in”. The former Governor of South Carolina also defended Trump’s nominee to succeed her, current State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, who has been criticized by some for her relative lack of foreign policy experience. Haley noted that she faced similar criticism when she first accepted her position with the Trump administration.

Government runs country: RBI Governor Das
Shaktikanta Das took charge as the RBI Governor a day after Urjit Patel resigned amid a tiff with federal government on the issue of RBI’s autonomy IANS, MUMBAI
D
eclaring that he will uphold the “autonomy, integrity and credibility” of the RBI, newlyappointed Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday that the government is responsible for running the country and the central bank is also accountable. Briefing reporters here after taking charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Das said that consultations with stakeholders have become fundamental to the central bank’s functioning in view of the complexity of modern day decision-making, and as part of this process he would meet the heads of the Mumbai-based state-run banks on Thursday. Meetings with public sector banks outside Mumbai would follow “after some days”, he added. “The RBI is a great institution and I will try my best to uphold its autonomy, identity and values. The autonomy, integrity and credibility is very important for this great institution and it will remain intact,” he assured. In response to queries on the recent government-RBI tiff culminating in the resignation of Urjit Patel as Governor, Das refused to go into contentious issues. “I do not like to go into whatever the issues or what are the issues between government which runs the country and the RBI, but every

institution has to have its professional integrity, maintain its professional autonomy. At the same time, every institution also must adhere to the principles of accountability,” he said. “Government is not just a stakeholder but I mean the government of the day runs the economy, runs the country and manages major policy decisions. “There has to be a free, fair, objective and very frank discussion between the government and the

RBI. And, I believe that all issues, however contentious, can be resolved through discussions,” he added. Das, who holds post graduation degree in history from the Delhi University, unlike his predecessors Urjit Patel and Raghuram Rajan, who were economists of repute, said the RBI board meeting would be held on Friday (December 14) as scheduled. “We will hold the central board meeting as planned on December
14 and go through the agenda and discuss the various issues that are listed,” he said. Das took charge as the RBI Governor a day after Urjit Patel resigned amidst a tiff with the Central government on the issue of RBI’s autonomy. Das had steered the monetary situation postdemonetization as the Economic Affairs Secretary. On the issue of RBI’s reserves, he said a committee to examine it would be constituted shortly and then with the appointment of its Chairman, the terms of reference of the committee would be drawn with fixed timelines. Das said he does not want to discuss individual issues as he intends to settle down first and study the issues before taking any decision. On capital requirement in the economy, he said he is open to discussing all issues within the ambit of RBI. “After the amendment of the RBI Act, the inflation targeting continues to be very important and it’s very heartening to note that inflation broadly is as per the targets and inflation outlook also looks fairly benign at this stage, but we have to be very watchful of the developments,” he said. Health of public sector banks, liquidity issue and maintenance of growth trajectory of Indian economy are some of the important issues for which he would interact with stakeholders and get an internal feedback before taking a view on these, he said.
‘National interest must prevail’ NEW DELHI: Calling for extensive debate on issues related to public interest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hoped that Narendra Modi matters of national interest will prevail over party considerations ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His remarks came ahead of the commencement of the winter session of Parliament. “The winter session of Parliament is important. Key legislative bills are pending, which are in the interest of the people of the India. I hope the proceedings will be smooth, and there will be frank as well as extensive debates among members,” Modi said. “I hope the productivity of the winter session is high. Let us strive to work hard and complete the legislative agenda pending. May national interest always prevail over party considerations,” he added. The winter session of Parliament began on Tuesday. The almost month-long session is slated to have 20 sittings and continue till the January 8. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said 45 Bills and one Financial item will be taken up during the session. Three Bills to replace Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance and Companies (Amendment) Ordinance were slated to be passed. Some important pending legislation like Consumer Protection Bill, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill and Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill were also expected to be considered during the session. —IANS

A presidential contest between Modi and Rahul on the cards?
The taking of center-stage by the Congress President is likely to turn the 2019 general election into a presidential-style contest between him and Narendra Modi AMULYA GANGUL, NEW DELHI
B
y setting in motion the process of undoing the pronounced pro-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tilt in Indian politics when the party secured a majority in the Lok Sabha and ruled at one time over 19 states, the voters of the three heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have sent out two unambiguous messages. One is the old warning about pride preceding a fall. The hyperbole of the BJP president Amit Shah’s declaration that his party will rule for 50 years has been shown to be so much hot air as has been the observation of a loyal mandarin, national security adviser Ajit Doval, that the country needs a strong, stable government - obviously meaning Narendra Modi’s rule - for the next 10 years. It was in keeping with these grandiose assertions that the BJP built the world’s tallest statue - of Congress stalwart Vallabhbhai Patel, whom the BJP can be said to have misappropriated from the Congress - and announced the plans for an almost equally large
Narendra Modi
statue of Lord Ram. But none of these achievements and claims have saved it from a 03 drubbing at the hustings. The lesson from this electoral whitewash of the three BJP-ruled states is that no mercy can be expected from the electorate for the Modi government’s failure to keep the promise of vikas or development. It is obvious that economic stagna-
Rahul Gandhi
tion and agricultural distress have spelt doom for the BJP. The second message from the results is that Rahul Gandhi has succeeded in exposing the falsity of the charges that had been leveled against him ever since he came into politics. Yet, neither being derisively called “Pappu” or an adolescent kid, or of being a “pathological liar”, to quote Arun Jaitley, had
any effect on his emergence as a capable leader, who took the lead in addressing the media after the recent opposition conclave while veterans like Sharad Pawar and H.D. Deve Gowda remained in the background. It is now obvious after the Congress’s success in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh that Rahul Gandhi will increasingly be
in the forefront of the mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) efforts, especially when the other major convener of the alliance, Chandrababu Naidu, has suffered a setback because of his Telugu Desam Party’s poor showing in the Telangana elections. The taking of center-stage by the Congress president is likely to turn the 2019 general election into a presidential-style contest between him and Narendra Modi. Now that a presidential-style contest is on the cards, it will be advisable for Rahul Gandhi to live up to the lesson which he says he has learnt from Modi’s mistake that of a lack of humility because “arrogance is fatal for a politician”. While the Prime Minister has tweeted his acceptance of the people’s “mandate”, some of the spokespersons of the BJP and the RSS have been describing the Congress’s success in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as “accidental” because of the marginal difference in the vote share of the two parties. The BJP is evidently unwilling to accept a result which has upended its dream of ushering in a Congress-mukt (free) India.
Assembly results blow to BJP ahead of 2019 elections BRAJENDRA NATH SINGH, NEW DELHI
T
he results in the Hindi heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan came as a major shock for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has won all the major states barring Delhi, Bihar, Punjab and Karnataka in elections held after the sweeping 2014 Lok Sabha victory. The BJP was routed in Chhattisgarh and defeated in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in closely-fought contests. The party mostly banked on the image of Chief Ministers Raman Singh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan to lift the party’s fortunes. In Rajasthan, where opinion polls had written off the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah put in extra efforts, besides banking on the hardcore Hindutva image of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, to take the battle to the Congress, but still lost. The BJP, however, managed to open its account in Mizoram,

where the Mizo National Front (MNF) ousted the ruling Congress party, but saw its numbers fall from five to one in Telangana, where the Telangana Rashtra Samithi swept the polls. The results of these five states, which were dubbed the semifinals ahead of the next general elections in April-May 2019, could be a factor in the battle between the BJPled National Democratic Alliance
(NDA) and the Congress-led opposition. The major issues raked up by Congress, specially the farm loan waiver amid an agrarian crisis across the country, employment and anger among upper caste, seems to have worked in its favor and could haunt the ruling dispensation if remedial measures are not taken. The BJP is not ready, however, to accept the defeat as a referendum on the Modi government.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said issues in state elections are entirely different. The BJP won Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh in 2003 but lost the Lok sabha elections next year, he pointed out. The general elections in 2019, he added, would be fought around Modi’s performance, with people voting for a tried and tested leadership instead of a non-ideological opposition coalition which is bound to collapse sooner than later. The Congress, which had a disastrous performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and suffered successive defeats in various Assembly elections, smiled for the first time after defeating the BJP in a direct contest in the three crucial states in north India. Party president Rahul Gandhi, who campaigned vigorously, said the Assembly election results were a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s non-performance on issues of unemployment, agrarian distress, corruption and negating the ill-effects of demonetisation. The BJP, however, maintained
the verdict was a mandate against the state governments and not against the Modi government. Out of total 678 Assembly seats in the five states, the Congress won close to 300 seats while the BJP managed to win over 200 seats. In the 2013 Assembly polls, the BJP had won 377 seats in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram while the Congress had won only 122 seats in these states. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had won 62 out of total 83 Lok Sabha constituencies of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram. Now the three Hindi heartland states will be ruled by Congress and the its impact would definitely be felt in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the last four years, the party has lost Lok Sabha by polls in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Gurdaspur in Punjab, Alwar and Ajmer in Rajasthan, Kairana, Phulpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra and Bellary and Mandya constituencies in Karnataka.

May survives no-confidence vote May vowed to deliver the Brexit ‘people voted for’ but heard the MPs who voted against her IANS, LONDON
U
K Prime Minister Theresa May was on Thursday heading to Brussels for an EU summit after surviving a vote of no confidence triggered by members of her own ruling Conservative Party over her handling of Brexit. May will be seeking legally binding pledges from EU leaders on the “backstop” — the plan to avoid a return to a manned Northern Ireland border, the BBC reported. The EU says it will not renegotiate the backstop but may agree to greater assurances on its temporary nature. At Thursday’s summit, May will have an opportunity to spell out face-to-face the problems to leaders of all the other 27 member states. After winning 200 votes to 117 or 63 per cent of the total ballots on Wednesday night, May is now

The attack took place in the morning when a suicide bomber detonated explosives in Kabul’s Paghman district, Interior Ministry spokesperson Najib Danish was cited as saying by TOLO news. The attacker was also killed in the bombing. after the vote, May vowed to deliver the Brexit “people voted for” but said she had heard the concerns of MPs who voted against her. “I have listened to what they said... We now need to get on with the job of delivering Brexit.” Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said that “her government is in chaos” and that the “vote makes no difference to the lives of our people”. He asked May to “bring her dismal deal back to the House of Commons next week so Parliament can take back control”. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable said, despite the “high drama” of Wednesday, “nothing has really changed”. rench President Emmanuel Macron on Monday announced that he will raise the monthly minimum wage by 100 euros ($113) and lower taxes on retirees and workers in a somber speech to the nation in which he tried to respond to the demands expressed in the so-called “yellow vest” protests. The president acknowledged that his words “may have hurt” some people in the past, adding that he considered justified the discontent that sparked the protests, in response to which he had announced by decree a “state of economic and social emergency.” “I may have given the impression

that it wasn’t my problem, that it wasn’t my priority. I may have hurt some of you with my words,” said Macron in his 13-minute televised— albeit pre-recorded — address, reports Efe. Macron acknowledged that the country is facing “an historic
moment” and asked the large companies to participate in the necessary efforts to change the situation. The French leader said that the increase in the minimum wage (currently 1,498 euros a month) will enter into effect in January 2019 “without costing anything to the employer,” adding that overtime work will be exempt from taxes and other charges, also starting in the new year. Macron also asked all businessmen “who can” to provide their workers with a yearend bonus that will also be exempt from taxation. In addition, the French president said that retirees who receive less than 2,000 euros per month will have the increase in the tax on social security funds nullified.
grats to Theresa May whose stamina, resilience and decency has again won the day and given her the chance to deliver Brexit for our country.” Chancellor Philip Hammond called the result “the right one”. While May did win a majority, it does reveal that more than a third of Conservative MPs voted against her as Prime Minister. The biggest challenge that May faces now is that she is stuck between a UK Parliament that will not vote through her Brexit deal and the EU, which will not reopen negotiations on that deal. The confidence vote coincided with May’s tour of Europe where she met key EU leaders, asking them for help passing her Brexit deal through Parliament. May was forced to postpone a vote on the deal on Monday when it became clear her bill would face a humiliating defeat.

Sri Lanka passes vote of confidence on ousted PM IANS, COLOMBO
S
ri Lanka’s Parliament on Wednesday passed a vote of confidence on ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with 117 lawmakers from the 225member Parliament voting in his favor. The vote came as incumbent Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and parliamentarians loyal to him boycotted sessions for the third consecutive week, alleging that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was acting in favor of Wickremesinghe and his United National Party (UNP), Xinhua news agency reported.

Following the vote, Wickremesinghe thanked all the parliamentarians who voted for him and
promised to protect democracy in the island country. Rajapaksa loyalists, however,
termed the vote as “invalid”, saying former strongman was appointed the Prime Minister and there was a government in place as the Court of Appeal had only temporarily suspended the government from performing its duties. Meanwhile, the Speaker informed President Maithripala Sirisena on the results of the confidence vote, officials said. The island country has been embroiled in a political turmoil ever since President Sirisena, in a very surprising move, sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in late October of this year and appointed former President Rajapaksa in his place.

Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy to the TRS leader at 1.25 a.m. at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan. Mohammed Mahmood Ali, a member of Telangana Legislative Council, also took oath as a Minister. Ali, who was Deputy Chief Minister in the previous cabinet, is likely to retain the same post. KCR had taken oath as Telangana’s first Chief Minister on June 2, 2014, the day when Telangana came into being as India’s 29th state. He went for a dissolution of the Assembly on September 6 this year, eight months before its term was to end. His gamble for early

PANAJI: Ailing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s sons celebrated his 63rd birthday on Thursday by offering prayers at a popular temple here. Parrikar’s sons were accompanied by former Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienkar and several other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers to the Mahalaxmi temple, after which a blood donation camp was organized at the party’s state headquarters here. “Holding a blood donation camp is our Chief Minister’s tradition on his birthday. We are following it,” Kuncalienkar told the media.
Parrikar, who is suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer and has not moved out of his private residence since October 14, was however not present. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah also wished Parrikar on Twitter. “Wishing a very happy birthday to the Chief Minister of Goa, Shri @manoharparrikar ji. he welfare schemes implemented during the last four-and-a-half years more than Telangana pride appear to have helped K. Chandrashekhar Rao lead his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to a resounding victory in India’s youngest state. Unlike in 2014 when KCR managed to scrape through despite the strong Telangana sentiment, this time people have given a clear mandate for the 64-year-old, now one of the most powerful regional leaders in the country who is eyeing a role in national politics. After achieving his goal of statehood to Telangana, he had taken upon himself the task of building ‘Bangaru (golden) Telangana’ and satisfied with the progress made so far people have given him another term to lead the state. Initially, KCR’s campaign was about Telangana self-respect and focused more on hitting out at ‘anti-Telangana’ Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Subsequently, the orator par excellence changed his tactic and at every election meeting appealed to people to compare his four-and-ahalf year rule of TRS with 60 years of Congress and TDP rule. He urged them to ponder after return-

ing home and then decide. This strategy seems to have worked. Lakhs of beneficiaries appeared to have voted for TRS as reflected in its massive win, bagging 88 seats in the 119-member Assembly with nearly 47 percent vote share. The gamble of advancing elections also paid off for KCR as he feared that going for Assembly polls along with Lok Sabha elections next year may overshadow his welfare and development narrative. Making a beginning with just 63 seats in 2014, KCR politically cemented his position by encouraging defections of over two dozen
legislators and several seniors from the Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP). A weakened opposition and TDP President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu shifting base to Vijayawada in the wake of ‘cash for vote’ scam in 2015 made KCR’s task easy. Launching various welfare schemes targeting different sections of the society, KCR strengthened his vote base. He claims that by spending Rs 40,000 crore on welfare schemes annually, Telangana is number one in providing welfare to people among all the states.

KAMAL, GEHLOT, BAGHEL FRONT-RUNNERS FOR CM POSTS Congress President Rahul Gandhi to take a final call on the names of Chief Ministers for Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh IANS, BHOPAL/JAIPUR/RAIPUR
V
eteran Congress leaders Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel appear to have emerged as the frontrunners in the race for chief ministership in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh respectively as the party put in motion the process of government formation in the three states where it dislodged the ruling BJP from power in the just-concluded Assembly elections. The newly-elected members in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan met in the presence of high command observers and passed a unanimous resolution leaving it to Congress President Rahul Gandhi to take the final call on who will be the Chief Minister in their states. The central observers are expected to reach Delhi and apprise Gandhi of their assessment, which included consultations with individual MLAs. Party leaders and contenders for chief ministership Kamal Nath and Jyotiradtiya Scindia in Madhya Pradesh and Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan, met the Governors of their states and staked claim to form the government. In Jaipur, outside the venue of Congress legislature party meeting, Pilot’s young supporters raised slogans hailing his leadership. Their claim to form the next government was made easy with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party extending the support of three of their MLAs to Congress in Madhya Pradesh to
NOTA votes played key role in 12 Rajasthan seats JAIPUR: In 12 Assembly seats in Rajasthan, NOTA (None of the Above) garnered more votes than the margin by which candidates won the election, affecting both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Jaipur’s Malviya Nagar seat, Congress candidate Archana Sharma lost to BJP’s Ashok Saraf, the Health Minister, by 1,704 votes while NOTA gained 2,371 votes, Election Commission statistics show. Saleh Mohammad of Congress in Pokhran defeated his rival Mahant Pratap Puri by 872 votes. NOTA got 1,121 votes. The lowest victory margin was recorded in Asind constituency where Jabbar Singh from BJP won by 154 votes, beating Congress rival
Manish Mewara. Here NOTA got 2,943 votes. In Churu, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore of BJP won by 1,850 votes defeating his Congress rival Reface Mandelia. NOTA tally was 2,023 votes. BJP’s Ramlal Sharma in Chomu constituency was elected by a margin of 1,288 votes, defeating Congress’ Bhagwan Sahai Saini. NOTA got 1,859 votes. In Khetri, BJP’s Jitendra Singh won by 957 votes, beating his Congress rival Dharmpal, while 1,377 vote went to NOTA. In Marvar Junction, Khushweer Singh, an Independent, defeated Kesaram Choudhary of Congress by 251 votes while NOTA got 2,719 votes. BJP’s Ruparam’s victory margin
was 1,188 votes in Makrana. He overcame Congress candidate Jakir Hussain Gesawat. NOTA’s share here was 1,550. In Sikar’s Dantaramgarh, Congress’ Virendra Singh defeated BJP’s Harish Chand Kumawat by 920 votes. A total of 1,180 votes went to NOTA. Congress’ Kaham Khan in Fatehpur triumphed by 860 votes against BJP’s Sunita Kumari while NOTA secured 1,165 votes. Rajendra Bidhuri of Congress in Begun won by 1,661 votes and the NOTA tally was 3,165. He defeated Suresh Dhaker of BJP. And in Pilibanga, BJP’s Dharmendra Kumar slipped past Congress’ Vinod Kumar by 278 votes while NOTA was stuffed with 2,441 votes. —IANS
keep the BJP out. BSP chief Mayawati also announced that her six MLAs in Rajasthan would support Congress if necessary. In both the states, the Congress fell short of securing an absolute majority by just two seats while in Chhattisgarh it scored a landslide victory by securing 68 of the 90 seats. Senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters in Raipur that the MLAs would meet and follow the Congress procedure of electing a new leader in which they will be consulted. Amidst pressures and counterpressures, the Congress President
could be weighing the option of preferring experience to youth in view of the nature of the verdict in which the party could only manage to barely defeat BJP which requires deft handling of the situation. While Kamal Nath, a nine-time MP, was appointed the Madhya Pradesh unit chief early this year, the other aspirant, Scindia, was later made the campaign committee chief. Both are MPs and did not contest the assembly polls. In Rajasthan, Gehlot, a former two-time Chief Minister, was pitted in the electoral fray along with Pilot at the last minute and both of
them have won their seats. Pilot’s claim to chief ministership rests on the work he had done to galvanize the party in the last more than four years as state party chief. Both of them met Governor Kalyan Singh along with several other Congress leaders. Chhattisgarh may not pose much of a challenge for Gandhi as Baghel is widely-credited with organising the party, specially after the assassination of its top leaders, including Vidya Charan Shukla, Nand Kumar Patel and Mahendra Karma, by Maoists more than five years ago. The other names doing
the rounds are T.S. Singh Deo, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, party MP Tamradhwaj Sahu and former union minister Charan Das Mahant. Earlier, accompanied by Scindia, Kamal Nath met Governor Anandiben Patel and staked his party’s claim to form the next government in the state. “We have staked claim,” he told reporters after the meeting at Raj Bhavan. Asked who would be the Chief Minister, Kamal Nath shot back: “I don’t know.” Late on Tuesday, Kamal Nath wrote to the Governor urging her to give him an appointment so that he could stake claim as the Congress had emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly with “majority support”. The Congress won 114 seats, two short of a majority in the 230member house. After the meeting with the Governor, Scindia said “of course it would be a privilege” when he was asked whether he would like to be the Chief Minister. He said the Congress has the legislative majority with the backing of all four Independents and three MLAs of BSP and SP. Kamal Nath said the top priority of new Congress government will be to work for “farmers and unemployed youth”. The statement came after his meeting with the outgoing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “We have to create a new environment of trust in Madhya Pradesh,” he added.

‘Kedarnath’: Competently crafted but completely lacks soul
D
irector Abhishek Kapoor’s “Kedarnath” kind of wears its premise on its title. It is sensitive, competently crafted and appears genuinely regional in flavor. It also brings together two opposing worlds of Indian cinema; the narrative of the traditional cinemas of the 70s and the modern technicalities of the 21st century. There are sequences that remind you of films like “Waqt”, “Jai Santoshi Maa” and “Mother India”. Wasting absolutely no time, the director drops the viewers into the picturesque pilgrim town of Kedarnath and introduces us to the harmonious lives of its residents which consists of human-porters who are

locally called “pithoo” and the shop-cum-lodge owners and tells us how their lives are dependent on the flow of the pilgrims. And interestingly, we learn that despite being
a pilgrim center for the Hindus, there are a few Muslim families that live there too. Soon the narrative focuses on the affable Mansoor (Sushant Singh Rajput) a human-porter and Mandakini aka Muku (Sara Ali Khan), the rebellious daughter of a local business man. How romance brews between the two of them, forms a major part of the narrative. The plot is actually an interest-
ing one that feels both timeless and current, in the way that it plays with romance and a recent natural calamity. What holds your attention is the cast. While Sushant Singh Rajput delivers a sincere performance, all eyes are on Sara Ali Khan who makes her debut with this film. As the spunky Mandakini, she reminds you of her mother Amrita Singh in her debut “Betaab”. Sushant and Sara deliver their chops earnestly. Overall, the shift of tones while blending a fictional, inter-faith romance with a historical natural disaster, the film suffers to some degree from the maker’s romantic and idealistic ideas and thereby leaves you unsatisfied. —Troy Ribeiro

Dances of India’s 42st Anniversary Perfomance in St. Louis BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO- Dances of India, based in St. Louis, Missouri, created a mesmerizing spectacle of myth, music, and story in a relentlessly inventive production entitled The Forgotten Ramayana: The Tale of Urmila, the Sleeping Princess Urmila. The venerable classical Indian dance company, now in its 41st season and one of the oldest classical Indian dance companies in the US, pulled out all the stops in examining the life of Urmila, one of the least-known characters in the Hindu epic The Ramayana. Urmila-- Sita’s sister and Lakshmana’s husband-- is nearly ignored in the epic because she agrees to sleep for fourteen years in order that her husband can stay awake for that amount of time in order to protect his brother Rama during their exile in the forest night and day. Dances of India decided to give Urmila a voice. And it rang out loud, poetically, and clear, in Nartana Prem’s lyrical narration of her own original script. She, daughter of Artistic Director Asha Prem, and Theckla Mehta—one of Asha Prem’s first students— create the productions together. Mehta, an American married to an Indian, choreographs the productions and creates visually stunning artwork and props to complement the tale. Trained by Asha Prem, the dancers perform Bharata Natyam- traditional classical Indian dance style.
S
In addition to the Tale of Urmila, the company presented an eclectic fusion of tap dance and Bharata Natyam performed by Laura Meier, a tap dancer at Dimensions Dance Center, choreographed the piece with Asha Prem.An additional item in the performance was especially arresting: a fusion of contemporary with Odissi, performed by French contemporary dancer Patrick Suzeau of Kansas University in Lawrence. Suzeau’s piece was based on the
poem The Guest House by the Sufi poet Rumi. He portrayed a very detailed range of expression in describing the nine basic emotions, or navarasa. All in all, Dances of India presented a very innovative performance filled with unexpected moments of beauty and transcendence. For a company that is over four decades old, it has demonstrated that it welcomes the task of keeping its productions enticing, new, and indeed surprising, year after year.

Vishal Patel
BY A STAFF WRITER LEN ALLEN, VA— Indian American Vishal Patel, 31, of Glen Allen, Virginia, pleaded guilty in federal court to posing as a doctor and treating patients in a Newport News free clinic in Virginia. As per reports, Patel had obtained a job at Stoneybrook Physicians with the help of fake diplomas, educational certificates and state licenses and also used Drug Enforcement Administration registration and licensing numbers, which belonged to real, certified physicians in the state. While posing as a licensed Roanoke physician, Patel had contacted DEA employees in October 2017 and requested that the Social Security number connected to the real doctor’s license be altered to his own and submitted forged documents, including tax forms with his own name, Glen Allen address and social security number with the physician’s DEA registration number, according to court documents. He then had copies of the records mailed to him. While employed by the Newport News clinic, Patel saw nearly two dozen patients and at times, ordered testing and examinations along with prescribing medications. Patel was let go when clinic employees were unable to verify his credentials, according to court documents. In a U.S. District Court, Patel admitted to providing false information in a DEA record and aggravated identity theft. According to court documents, Patel was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Overland Park, Kansas, last December. While pleading guilty, Patel admitted to providing false information in a DEA record and aggravated identity theft. He faces as much as six years in prison.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL— A Lincolnwood man pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sell prescriptions for opiates to people without a legitimate reason for the drugs. Mohammed Shariff, 68, is the former owner of Midtown Medical Center and its pharmacy in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. According to the terms of his plea agreement, he conspired with a doctor there, Theodore Galvani, to prescribe large quantities of powerful drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam with no physical exam or medical tests. Galvani met with more than 70 patients a day and sometimes saw groups of two or more people at the same time. Shariff organized crews of people to meet with the doctor to get prescriptions for opiates, according to the plea agreement. People paid $100 to $200 in cash to the two men in exchange for the illegal prescriptions. Shariff and Galvani also submitted false claims to Medicare, getting reimbursed for at least $584,188 from February 2012 to March 2013 alone, it said. Shariff pocketed more than $292,000 of that money, he admitted. The conspiracy was repsnsible for the illegal presecription of more than 2 kilograms of oxycodone, nearly 600,000 hydrocodone pills and more than 190,000 alprazolam pills, commonly known as Xanax. Shariff admitted in his plea agreement that he attempted to carry out a separate fraud scheme involving the Elgin-based home health care company he owned, Home Health Resource. Shariff faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1 million after negotiating a plea to a single count of conspiracy to knowingly dispense controlled substances outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose. Shariff, who is being represented by attorney Ralph Meczyk in the case, has a sentencing hearing set for March 19, 2019. Galvani, of Spring Grove, has already pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy charges and awaits sentencing.

ICE’s Warning of More Immigration Arrests in N.J. BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ— New Jersey residents should expect more arrests of immigrants in their neighborhoods and workplaces by federal immigration agents after controversial new rules for local police officers go into effect in March, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said. ICE officials warn there will likely be an uptick in arrests of immigrants living in the country illegally in the wake of state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal’s announcement last week that he is limiting how much local and state police can help immigration officials. The new rules— which include limiting when police can turn over jailed immigrants to ICE agents— drew a sharp rebuke from
J
federal immigration officials who said New Jersey was creating a “state-sanctioned haven” for unauthorized immigrants. Immigrant rights groups also fired back
at ICE’s warning that it will increase arrests in neighborhoods and businesses. Here’s another way to find out what’s happening in your state: Listen to a daily
news update on Alexa or via a podcast on your Apple device. ICE arrests have been on the rise in New Jersey, which has one of the largest immigrant populations in the nation. The increase came as President Donald Trump’s administration promised increased enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws. ICE has also stepped up efforts to audit New Jersey businesses suspected of hiring immigrants living in the country illegally. The increase in arrests helped heighten fear in immigrant communities about calling the police, even when the immigrants were crime victims. ICE officials said the directive makes it unnecessarily difficult for their agents to do their jobs in New Jersey.

Drug That Targets Cancer Patients More Effectively BY DR. NILESH D. MEHTA HICAGO, IL— At one time, designer drugs were being just talked about as a scientific curiosity. Cancer researchers have diligently figured out the actual mutations that are involved in some forms of cancer. While medical research has not been able to elucidate all the mutational mystery in cancer cells, there have been major milestones that have been achieved in the past decade. Particularly, we have seen use of check point inhibitors as medications used for cancer patients as immunotherapy particularly with lung cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, and the list continues to expand. Until now, the emphasis for doctors was to find out where the cancer came from and then focus on therapy based on that. Now, there is going to be a paradigm shift in that thought process. We now want to know what mutation does the cancer possess regardless of where it arose. If we know the mutation that caused the cancer, then, we can selectively go after the mutated cancer cells and have a positive effect on patients. Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) gene abnormalities resulting in mutation affects cancer patients. This mutation that occurs appears to be the “driver” of these cancer cells allowing their propagation and multiplication. If we can successfully switch off the mutation, one would think that the cancer cells would not multiply. That is exactly what Vitrakvi appears to do. The Food and Drug Administration has approved this new cancer drug larotrectinib (Vitrakvi) that is the first medication to be designed from

Customer Assaults Deli Clerk After Ordering Sandwich
C
BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY— A belligerent Brooklyn deli customer attacked a store worker because he didn’t want to wait for his bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, police and witnesses said. “Make my s–t right now!” he screamed. The shop worker, 28-year-old Sanjay Patel, was working the sandwich station at the deli on Flushing Avenue near Noll Street at about 4:30 a.m. when the maniac walked in and ordered the sandwich. When the snack took a few minutes to make, the man went ballistic. He slammed his hand on the deli counter while screaming at Patel, then threw a metal bell and several loaves of bread at him. “He’s ordering and the deli is busy at that time and he’s little bit drunk,” Patel said. “And he’s crazy.” “It was scary,” he added. “He said he was going to shoot me. He said he would kill me.” Patel suffered bruising and swelling after the attack and was taken to Wyckoff Hospital to be treated. The suspect, who has not been arrested, was last seen wearing all green clothing. He’s believed to be in his late teens or early 20s.

the start to treat a specific genetic mutation rather than a cancer type or from what organ cancer arose. Vitrakvi is indicated for the treatment of adult and pediatric patients with solid tumors that have this NTRK gene fusion without a known acquired resistance mutation. This treatment is meant for patients where other alternatives have already been explored. While the potential effects of this approval may not be far reaching in the immediate context, it is the concept which appears to be an innovative and exciting one. We may be fast approaching an era where oncologists may not be that concerned about the actual organ from where cancer cells started (colon, breast, lung etc), but rather be more interested in the genetic make-
up of the tumor. Specific and individual tumor mutations in cancer cells have been quite elusive and it has been only in the last decade or so that therapeutic values have been explored to help our patients with cancer. NTRK genetic abnormalities are an extremely small portion of mutational defects identified in cancer patients. We have a drug that can target these specific patients with this abnormality. As more mutational abnormalities are discovered, specific targeted drugs will become available to treat cancer patients more effectively. This clearly sends a positive message to our patients who are always looking for newer treatments.

PV Sindhu beats World No 1 GUANGZHOU (CHINA): India’s P.V. Sindhu on Wednesday beat world number two and defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan PV Sindhu 24-22, 21-15 in her opening match of the BWF World Tour Finals in Guangzhou. World number six Sindhu, who lost last year’s final to Yamaguchi in Dubai, saved two game points in the opening game and took the match in 55 minutes, reports Efe. “It’s important to start well in the group stage. I was nervous towards the end of the first game but once I won that game I played better,” the 23-year-old Indian Olympic silver medallist said after the match, according to an official BWF report. Sindhu trailed in both games but absorbed the pressure and fought back each time with a mix of aggression and patience. Yamaguchi said she may have been too defensive against her opponent and would be hoping to repeat last year’s performance, when she went on to win the tournament despite a first-round loss.

Earlier, resuming the day at 104/4, the hosts soon lost overnight

The hosts still had a ray of hope with the other overnight batter Shaun Marsh (60) and captain Tim Paine (41) raising 41 runs for the sixth wicket before Bumrah packed away the former. India look to continue momentum PERTH: After registering a thrilling 31-run victory in the first cricket Test, India will look to continue the momentum when they take on Australia in the second match on a green top here on Friday. The pitch will offer plenty of pace and bounce at the brand new Optus Stadium and that could, on paper, be an advantage for the hosts. But an upbeat Indian team, having a world class bowling attack at their disposal, would be relishing the opportunity to have a go at their rivals. “We get more excited than nervous looking at lively pitches now,”
skipper Virat Kohli had said. India though have been hit by injuries to key players R Ashwin and Rohit Sharma who are ruled out of the Test. Pacer Umesh Yadav, all-rounders Hanuma Vihari and Ravindra Jadeja have been included in the 13-man squad. The BCCI also said that teenage opener Prithvi Shaw was recovering well from his left ankle injury but still undergoing treatment. Shaw too will be out of the second Test. The Aussies are expected to field the same bowling line-up. —IANS
once again just at the stroke of lunch by getting Paine caught behind, leaving the hosts to the tail to achieve the target. It was always going to be a tall ask for the tailenders to survive two full sessions but the Australians — Pat Cummins (28), Mitchell Starc (28), Nathan Lyon (38 not out) and Josh Hazlewood (13) — batted their skin out to reduce the deficit to only 31 runs. Needing three wickets for an
outright win, the Indian attack seemed to be on a mission as Shami started the post-lunch session with the wicket of Starc after the Aussie quick put on 59 runs for the eighth wicket with fellow pacer Cummins. Starc’s departure brought in Lyon, who doubled his effort of getting six wickets in India’s second innings, with a solid 47-ball unbeaten 38 and more importantly being involved in two crucial stands.
Curtains on glorious career AJEYO BASU, NEW DELHI
T
he high points of Gautam Gambhir’s career are a stuff every aspiring cricketer dreams of. Top scorer in two World Cups, winner of two IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), one of the most prolific opening pairs in world cricket alongside the great Virender Sehwag. The list goes on and on. On Sunday (last weekend), the combative former Team India player made his exit from the game as the Ranji Trophy match between his native Delhi and Andhra drew to a close. The match ended in a dull stalemate at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. The match itself however, faded into inconsequence as Gambhir was at the center of attention of the spectators present in the stadium. He made the occasion a memorable one, top scoring with 112 in Delhi’s first innings. The 37-year-old has an enviable record. He has played 58 Tests (4154 runs), 147 One-Day Internationals (5238 runs) and 37 Twenty20 Internationals. He has also played 197 first-class matches.
But apart from the statistics, what fans will remember most is his combative attitude, the never-say-die spirit which stood out during those nerve wracking run chases or when the going became tough. These qualities were on full display during two of the most memorable occasions for Indian cricket since the World Cup triumph in 1983 -- winning the 2007 World Twenty20 and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He played an integral part in India’s wins in both finals. At the 2007 World Twenty20 final against arch-rivals Pakistan, he top scored with 75 runs from 54 balls. He was the top scorer in the 2011 World Cup final as well with a composed 97 from 122 deliveries as India pulled off an exciting chase against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Gambhir is also the lone Indian and only one of four cricketers to have scored hundreds in five consecutive Test matches. He is the also the only Indian batsman to score in excess of 300 runs in four consecutive Test series. But even before he announced his retirement earlier in the week, the
signs were there for the past couple of years. Gambhir did not exactly see eye to eye with India captain Virat Kohli which played a part in his exit from the national squad. He also struggled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in recent times and his last season after returning to the Delhi Daredevils was not a very memorable one. As he walked off the field and into the sunset, the curtains came down on a glorious career. Indian fans, perhaps even several around the cricketing world will miss one of the most exciting and talented batsmen of his generation. Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir.

igarette ads with graphic warning labels that contain images such as bleeding, cancerous gums and lips can snuff out children’s view of smoking tobacco as cool, rebellious and fun, suggests a new research. These labels have the same antismoking effect as similar warning labels on cigarette packs. “This study suggests the value of graphic warning labels extends beyond just getting people to have more negative feeling about smoking,” said lead author Jeff Niederdeppe, Associate Professor at the Cornell University. “It also seems to have the added benefit of reducing the influence of ‘social cue’ ads that entice young people to want to smoke in the first

place,” Niederdeppe added. For the study, the team studied the graphic warning labels’ effect on 451 adult smokers and 474 middle schoolers in rural and urban lowincome communities.
Each participant was randomly assigned a set of six ads. Some saw ads with social cues -- such as a group of smiling people taking a selfie with a graphic warning label covering 20% of the ad. Other
groups saw ads with various combinations of text-only warnings, graphic warnings, the current surgeon general warning, brand imagery and social cues. They found that the graphic warning label drew viewers’ attention away from ads and toward the warning, regardless of whether the warning was graphic or text only, more than the current surgeon general warning. The labels also aroused more negative feelings than the text-only labels and reduced the children’s perceptions that cigarette brands are attractive and exciting. The study also found participants felt the same levels of negative emotion whether they looked at a graphic warning label covering 20 per cent of a full page ad or 50 per cent of a much smaller cigarette pack.

But most fruits, in particular tender fruit, have a low glycemic index and what we’re showing here is dried fruits also have a lower glycemic index, so they don’t raise your blood sugar very much,” said John Sievenpiper from Toronto’s St
Michael’s Hospital. “This study finds that people can use dried fruits as a low glycemic index food source to replace higher glycemic index foods,” he added. The study, published in Nutrition and Diabetes journal, compared the glycemic response of 4 dried fruits — dates, apricots, raisins and sultanas — to white bread in a small group of healthy participants. They found that the fruit had a lower glycemic index and could lower the glycemic response of white bread through displacement of half

of the available carbohydrate. The glycemic index is a way of explaining how different carbohydrates affect blood glucose and can help find out which foods are best for people with diabetes. Foods high on the glycemic index — such as white bread, most
breakfast cereals and rice — produce a spike in blood glucose. On the other hand, the carbohydrates in low glycemic index foods — including pasta, beans, lentils are broken down more slowly, and cause more moderate increases in blood glucose and insulin.
NEW YORK: Is your child facing trouble in sleeping? If so, parents take note. Regular and sufficient sleep from early childhood may be important for gaining healthy body weight in adolescence, suggests a new study. The study revealed that those who had no bedtime routine at age nine had shorter self-reported sleep duration and higher body mass index (BMI) at age 15, when compared to those children with age-appropriate bedtimes. “We think sleep affects physical and mental health, and the ability to learn,” said Orfeu Buxton, Professor from the University of Pennsylvania in the US. “Parenting practices in childhood affect physical health and BMI in the teenage years. Developing a proper routine in childhood is crucial for the future health of the child,” Buxton added. For the study, researchers analysed 2,196 children. The findings, published in the journal SLEEP, showed that onethird of children consistently adhered to age-appropriate bedtimes for ages five to nine. Bedtime should provide enough of a “window” for the child to get an appropriate amount of sleep, even if the child does not fall asleep right away, said Buxton. Future family interventions may need to include parental education about sleep health, particularly focusing on parents with low income and low education, Lee said, adding the need for research in childhood sleep behavior. —IANS
Cervical Cancer in India: A preventable tragedy PROF VIVEKANAND JHA NEW DELHI
P
remature death and disability from cancer is a great tragedy that hundreds of thousands of women and their families in India and other developing countries face every year. Of the various cancers that afflict women, that of the cervix, a part of the reproductive system, is one of the most common causes of death in a low sociodemographic index (SDI) country like ours. Cervical cancer is the largest contributor to cancer deaths, compris-
ing up to one-third of all cancers (in both sexes) in many underdeveloped countries, compared with less than 10% in the developed countries. About 86% of all deaths due to cervical cancer occur in low-middle income countries, and 25% of global deaths occur in India. It is estimated that in India, about 160 million women aged 3059 years are at risk of developing this condition, and 77,300 new cases are diagnosed annually with 37,800 deaths. Over the last quarter century, knowledge about what causes cervical cancer has evolved, with the
recognition of the central role of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection as a causal agent of this condition. Primary cervical screening using HPV-DNA testing was recommended by WHO in 2013. It is being introduced in high-income countries worldwide, A strong economic case can be made to ask governments to subsidise the cost of HPV DNA testing and vaccination. An appropriate response to this eminently preventable cancer should be made an integral part of the women’s health policy.

Pichai denies political bias to US Congress Google wants to allow videos with diverse perspectives as long as they don’t violate its policies, says the Google CEO IANS, WASHINGTON
G
oogle CEO Sundar Pichai on Tuesday denied that the tech giant favors the more progressive political currents, in contrast to what some legislators and media outlets have claimed, in his first appearance before the US Congress. When we find violations on our policies, we do remove those videos (from YouTube),” Efe reported. In recent months, the committee headed by Republican Sen. Bob Goodlatte has held hearings focusing on whether big tech firms
Canadian court frees Huawei CFO on bail VANCOUVER: A Canadian court has granted bail to Chinese tech company Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who has been accused of helping the firm dodge American sanctions on Iran, while she awaits a hearing on extradition to the US. Meng Wanzhou’s bail on Tuesday night comes after three days of hearings, the Guardian reported. Meng, 46, was arrested in Vancouver on December 1 at the request of American authorities. Meng spent more than a week in custody and cited her poor health — including previous cancer surgery and difficulty eating solid foods — as grounds for bail. In granting her release, Justice William Ehrcke of the Supreme Court outlined 15 provisions including Meng submitting to constant surveillance and wearing a GPS tracking device, surrendering both her passports and providing a bond of C$10 million (US $7 million). —IANS
‘Why does googling ‘idiot’ brings up Trump photos?’ WASHINGTON: US Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, in an effort to understand how Google search algorithms work, asked its CEO Sundar Pichai why so many pictures of President Donald Trump appear when she does a Google search for “idiot”.
In August, Trump said in a tweet that a Google search for “Trump
display any kind of anti-conservative bias against such policies or lawmakers, among other controversies. Another basic question being handled in these hearings has been
the ability of the tech companies to deal with foreign interference in US elections. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told the Senate in September that their firms are now

News” showed only reports from “Fake News Media.” He concluded it was “rigged” against him so “almost all stories and news was bad.” House Republicans said they wanted to hold the hearing — entitled “Transparency & Accountability: Examining Google and its Data Collection, Use and Filtering Practices” — to make sure the search giant was being impartial. —IANS
“better prepared” to combat those type of attacks. Sandberg and Dorsey defended their efforts almost a year after their companies confirmed before the same committee that Russia
used accounts on their platforms to disseminate divisive political messages with the aim of influencing the 2016 presidential election.
NASA’s Voyager 2 is now also in interstellar space MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO
F
orty-one years after it left Earth, NASA’s Voyager 2 probe has now become only the second human-made object to enter interstellar space after its twin Voyager 1 did in 2012. Since November 5, the instrument on Voyager 2 that detects plasma from the Sun, also called solar wind, has not observed solar wind, indicating that it has left the heliosphere, “the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields created by the Sun.” Voyager 2 is now some 18 billion kilometers away compared to Voyager 1 at 21.6 billion kilometers, both offering a measure of how far the empire of the Sun stretches. In terms of the reach of heliospheric particles or particles from the Sun, both spacecraft are effectively outside of it but they still have a long way to traverse for them to escape the influence of solar gravity . As NASA explains, it will take
This illustration shows position of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes. (Photo: NASA)
Voyager 2,300 years to enter the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, a collection of small objects still affected by the Sun’s gravity. Estimates of how far the Oort Cloud stretches vary between about 1,000 astronomical units (AU) - one AU is the distance between the Sun and the Earth of about 150 million kilometers - and 100,000 AU. It
will take the probes up to 30,000 years to completely cross the Oort Cloud. The Sun’s heat can no longer touch Voyager 2 but its gravity still can. However, for all practical purposes, both spacecraft are in interstellar space or the space between stars. One everyday example of how much technology has been
revolutionised since they left, smartphones now have 200,000 times memory than the two probes. With that little memory, the duo produced remarkable images of planets unlike the often pointless selfies that people produce using their powerful smartphones. The Voyager missions have been an astonishing success for NASA. Originally built to last five years they both lasted nearly eight times that and during those four decades transformed human understanding of the solar system. They both conducted close-up studies of Jupiter and Saturn. NASA altered the path of Voyager such that it conducted flybys of Uranus and Neptune, making the first exploration of those very distant planets. The two spacecraft are expected to last billions of years, drifting around in space and could be the only available evidence of human civilization in deep space for a prospective advanced civilization.
