rime Minister Shri Narendra Modi reached Varanasi in morning. Upon reaching Kashi, PM Shri Modi visited Kaal Bhairav Temple to offer prayers and performed aarti at the Temple. After that, PM Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath boarded a cruise vessel for Lalita ghat where PM Modi took a holy dip in the Ganga river. As they were being photographed, they all chanted 'Harr Harr Mahadev.' All BJP chief ministers and deputy CMs attended the ceremony which was broadcasted live from over 51,000 places nationwide. The inauguration ceremony has been named “Divya Kashi, Bhavya Kashi” (Divine Kashi, Grand Kashi). During his address to the nation, he said, Kashi is not a matter of mere words, it is a creation of sensations. Kashi is that - where awakening is life; Kashi is that where death is also a festival; Kashi is that - where truth is the culture; Kashi is where love is tradition. He further stated, Today, a new chapter is being written in the history of Kashi Vishwanath. Kashi Vishwanath Dham premises is not just a grand 'bhavan' but a symbol of India's 'Sanatan' culture and traditions. Here you'll see how inspirations of the ancient are giving direction to the future. After about two and a half years, now this corridor is ready for pilgrims and devotees of Baba Vishwanath and with this the dream of transforming Kashi to Kyoto seems to be fulfilled. On 8 March 2019, PM Modi while laying the foundation stone of beautification of Kashi Dham in Varanasi said, “Since I was not in politics, I have been thinking about how to increase the beauty of Kashi. For years, Baba Vishwanath was tied, could not even breathe properly, but now he will get freedom.” In the last 100 years, only two such politicians of India have developed and maintained the cultural heritage of their country on a grand level. Sardar Shri Vallabhbhai Patel and PM Shri Narendra Modi. Sardar Shri Vallabhbhai Patel fulfilled the dream of making Somnath temple while following his footstep, PM Shri Narendra Modi has done incomparable work of beautifying Kashi, which has been recorded in history with the name of Kashi Corridor.

7 Really Surprising Facts Abouts Kashi Vishwanath Temple

One of the world's holiest cities, India's spiritual capital

I V

nhabited since at least 1800 BC, Varanasi is well known for being among the oldest living cities on Earth, and one of the holiest for the world's estimated 1.2 billion Hindus. Every day, as the sound of ringing temple bells echo overhead, tens of thousands of devotees descend the city's 88 stone ghat steps and dip themselves into the Ganges river to wash away their sins. Bereaved relatives flock to Varanasi's two cremation grounds where funeral pyres burn around the clock, believing that Shiva himself whispers the Tarak mantra (chant of liberation) into the ears of all those cremated here, granting them instant moksha or salvation.

aranasi is a heap of mismatched temples and narrow steps located on the Ganges' crescentshaped western bank, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a city of scholars, home to one of Asia's largest universities. It is a city of temples, including the gold-plated Vishwanath sacred to Shiva; the Bharat Mata, or Mother India, temple that boasts a huge threedimensional relief map of the Indian subcontinent carved out of marble; and the hundreds of small temples that dot the waterways and alleys. It is also a city of legends. Varanasi strains under its own myths, which are contradictory, obscure and impossible to prove. "The history of Varanasi is a puzzle [that] has to be solved by a group of scholars together," says Bhanu Shankar Mehta, who has lived in Varanasi for more than 80 years and lectures on its history. "You must put all the mythological and historical and proto-history together." Old Varanasi's ancient ruins lie on the Rajghat plateau, in the northeastern part of the city. Here, archaeologists discovered pottery that went back to 1000 B.C., and broken masonry from as late as A.D. 1500, suggesting the area has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years. "We have very few settlements that continue like that, so Varanasi is very important from an archaeological perspective," says P.N. Singh, a history professor at Banaras Hindu University. "It is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities."" Varanasi's legends go back some 10,000 years, to the oldest epics of Hindu literature, including the Puranas, the Vedas and the Mahabharata. They say Varanasi is the city of Lord Shiva, who walked here with his wife Parvati at the beginning of time. It could also be the battlefield where the god Krishna set fire to a duplicate but imposter Krishna, or the place where the Lord Rama came to do penance after slaying the demon Ravana. Under the name Kasi, the city was one of 16 great Indian kingdoms mentioned by ancient Buddhist texts from the first millennium B.C., when the invention of highways and coins first led to a flourishing of commerce. Iron arrowheads and fortified cities discovered by archaeologists suggest violent encounters between the kingdoms, but it was also an age of nonviolence. Gautama, later known as the Buddha, delivered his first sermon during this era. And Mahavir, the founder of the ascetic and nonviolent Jain religion, was born during this period.

According to records, the Kashi Vishwanath temple was found in 1490. Kashi has seen the rule of many kings both famous and not so famous. Did you know that it was also ruled by Buddhists for some time? Undoubtedly, the city has seen its share of slaughter and destruction. The temples were plundered time and again by the Mughals. The original temples were re-built, then destroyed and re-built. Mughal Emperor Akbar gave permission to build the original temple, which was later destroyed by Aurangzeb – the sixth Mughal emperor, who ruled over almost the entire Indian subcontinent for a period of 49 years. The Kashi Vishwanath temple was last rebuilt and restored to its glory by the Queen of Indore, Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar. She took the initiative to restore the temple and also provided the funds for it. However, later Akbar’s great grandson Aurangzeb had destroyed the temple and built a mosque in its place. The temple holds immense significance to Hindus as it is revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. There is popular belief that Lord Shiva actually stayed here for some time. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple has three domes covered of gold! As per the popular belief, any wish is fulfilled if it is made after seeing the golden chatra.

It is said the when news reached of Aurangzeb’s plans to destroy the temple, the idol of Shiva was hidden in a well to protect it from the destruction. The well, called the “well of wisdom”, still stands there between the mosque and the temple. Don’t forget to visit it on your next trip here. The divine shrine is visited by more than 7 million devotees year on year and has been restored and beautified with the Kashi Vishwanath Dham project by the Prime Minister Narendra Modiled government. On December 13, PM Modi inaugurated Phase-1 of the project.

There is a “very high” risk the omicron variant of Covid-19 will become dominant in Europe by early next year and lead to a growing number of hospital admissions and deaths, the EU’s public

ECDC said data was not yet sufficient to assess the severity of disease caused by the omicron variant. However, even if the severity of Covid-19 it caused was lower than that caused by delta, the increased transmissibility would rapidly outweigh any potential benefits. “It is, therefore, considered very likely that the omicron VOC will cause additional hospitalisations and fatalities.

Australia re-opens borders to non-citizens despite Omicron worries HiIndia Newsdesk

The reopening of Australia's borders came as its most populous state, New South Wales, reported its biggest one-day rise in cases in four months, though Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government was well placed to deal with rising numbers. Australia on Wednesday reopened borders to vaccinated skilled migrants and foreign students after a nearly twoyear ban on their entry, in a bid to boost an economy hit by stop-start COVID-19 lockdowns. The emergence of the new Omicron variant forced officials to delay the reopening of international travel by two weeks after health officials sought a pause to get more information about the strain, which appears to show milder symptoms than other coronavirus variants. Russia and China should stand firm in rejecting western interference and defending each other’s security interests, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping agreed in a video call on Wednesday. Their conversation, eight days after Putin spoke to US President Joe Biden in a similar format, underscored how shared hostility to the west is bringing Moscow and Beijing closer together. “At present, certain international forces under

the guise of ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ are interfering in the internal affairs of China and Russia, and brutally trampling on international law and recognised norms of international relations,” China’s state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Xi as saying. “China and Russia should increase their joint efforts to more effectively safeguard the security interests of both parties.”

New York City names first female police chief HiIndia Newsdesk

Keechant Sewell

New York City's police force will be led by a woman for the first time in its 176-year history, Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced on Wednesday.

Keechant Sewell, 49, is a 23-year veteran of the Nassau Police Department in nearby Long Island, where she became chief of detectives in September 2020. For Mr Adams, the move fulfils a campaign pledge to name a female commissioner. The NYPD is the largest police force in the US. Speaking to media on Wednesday morning, Mr Adams - a former NYPD captain - said that women often are "sitting on the bench" and "never allowed to get in the game" when it comes to policing. "That is stopping today," he said. Ms Sewell, who is originally from the New York borough of Queens, previously served in

New York's Nassau County narcotics and major case units, and as a hostage negotiator. When she takes over the department in January, Ms Sewell will also become only the third black commissioner to take the helm of NYPD. Ms Sewell said she was "mindful of the historic nature of this announcement" and hopes to improve relations between the police and New York City's residents. "I bring a different perspective to make sure the department looks like the city it serves, and making the decision, just as Mayor Adams did, to elevate women and people of colour to leadership positions," she said.

Boost India capacity to secure its borders: Incoming US envoy HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

The US death toll from Covid-19 topped 8,00,000 on Tuesday, a onceunimaginable figure seen as doubly tragic, given that more than 2,00,000 of those lives were lost after the vaccine became available practically for the asking last spring. The number of deaths, as compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is about equal to the population of Atlanta and St. Louis combined, or Minneapolis and Cleveland put together. It is roughly equivalent to how many Americans die each year from heart disease or stroke.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

Observing that India is situated in a “tough neighbourhood”, US President Joe Biden’s nominee for next envoy to New Delhi on Tuesday told lawmakers

that he will double-down on America’s efforts to strengthen India’s capacity to “secure its borders, defend its sovereignty and deter aggression”. Eric Michael Garcetti, 50, is currently serving as the Mayor of Los Angeles and is a personal confidant of Biden. During his confirmation hearing for US Ambassador to India, Garcetti said, “India is situated in a tough neighbourhood. If confirmed, I intend to double-down on our efforts to strengthen India’s capacity to secure its borders, defend its sovereignty and deter aggression.”

When a tornado touched down in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in the middle of the night, its violence was centered on this friendly subdivision, where everyone waved at one another and giggling children spent afternoons tooling around on bicycles on the sidewalks. Fourteen people died in a few blocks, 11 of them on a single street, Moss Creek Avenue. Entire families were lost, among them seven children, two of them infants. Neighbours who survived are so stricken with grief they struggle to speak of it. All around them, amid the ruins, is evidence of the kids they used to watch climb off the school bus.

BJP MPs from Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka told to organise sporting, cultural events, meet and greet people to know their expectations and showcase work done by government.

New Delhi: Queue up at the airport rather than heading straight to the lounge to rest, improve social outreach and meet people more regularly, organise more sports and cultural events — these are some advice Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs when he met them Wednesday. Modi held a breakfast meeting with the BJP MPs from the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka Wednesday. “Modi ji asked the MPs to shun their habit of heading straight to the lounge to rest and told them to queue up at the airport. He even said that while waiting they should use the opportunity to greet people and strike a conversation with them to understand what they expect from them and the government,” said a senior BJP leader who was present at the meeting.

New Delhi: A father cannot be punished for the actions of his son - this, BJP sources have told NDTV, is the ruling party’s position on demands from the opposition that junior Home Minister Ajay Mishra must resign, or be sacked, over his son being charged in the Lakhimpur Kheri farm killings. Sources told the party’s senior leadership is not in favour of precipitate action against Mr Mishra, and that he will not, at this time, be removed from the Council of Ministers. Sources pointed out, as union ministers and senior BJP leaders have said, that the Lakhimpur Kheri case is sub judice (being heard in court) and that the SIT had yet to file its final report. Party sources did, however, admit that Mr Mishra’s shocking outburst at journalists yesterday (at Lakhimpur Kheri, in fact) was “wrong”. The minister had been cautioned, the sources said.

Former India skipper Kapil Dev has weighed in on the controversy surrounding India’s white-ball captaincy, saying that Virat Kohli’s statements that exposed his differences with the BCCI on the issue of captaincy were ill-timed. “It is not good to point fingers on anybody at this point in time. The South Africa tour is coming and please pay attention to the tour,” Kapil Dev told. He said that Kohli speaking publicly on the captaincy issue and highlighting differences with board president Sourav Ganguly isn’t good. “I would say board president is board president but yes, the Indian cricket team captain is also a big thing.

New Delhi: Army Chief Gen MM Naravane has assumed the charge as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee that comprises the three service chiefs, people familiar with the development said on Wednesday. The post fell vacant following the death of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat in the IAF helicopter crash on December 8. Gen Naravane has been given the charge

as the chairman of the committee as he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs, the people cited above said. IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar had taken over their respective positions on September 30 and November 30. Before the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the senior-most among the three service chiefs used to be the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC) met on Tuesday and condoled the death of Gen Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel. Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the crash, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday at a military hospital in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Gen Naravane held a telephonic conversation with Lt Gen Fahd bin Abdullah Al-Mutair, the Commander of Royal Saudi Armed Forces.

Since revocation of Article 370, only seven plots have been bought by people not staying in the Valley Outsiders have bought only seven plots of land in Jammu and Kashmir since the revocation of key Article 370 provisions and the notification of new land laws, the Union home ministry told Parliament on Wednesday. It said all the seven plots were located in Jammu division. Ministry sources suggested that the fear of militancy was deterring Indians from outside the region from buying land in the Union Territory. “As per the information provided by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, a total of seven plots of land have been purchased by persons from outside the UT (Union Territory) of Jammu and Kashmir,” junior home minister Nityanand Rai told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. Articles 370 and 35A barred anyone apart from permanent residents from owning land in Jammu and Kashmir. After the scrapping of the special status and statehood in August 2019, a central notification was issued last year allowing Indian citizens from outside Jammu and Kashmir to buy nonagricultural land and secure jobs in the new Union Territory.

Virat Kohli Contradicts Sourav Ganguly

‘I was never told not to give up T20 captaincy’ HiIndia Newsdesk

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli on Wednesday opened up on how the entire process of naming Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain, in place of him, transpired. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” Ganguly told ANI. “Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate.” “I was contacted one and half hours before selection meeting on 8th for Test series and there was no prior communication to me at all since I announced my decision on T20 captaincy. “...the chief selector discussed the Test team to which we both agreed.“Before ending the call, I was told that the five selectors have decided that I will not be the ODI captain to which I replied ‘okay fine’,” Kohli said.

Group Captain Varun Singh succumbs to injuries HiIndia Newsdesk

G roup C apt a i n Varun Singh, who had been on life support for the past week since the Indian Air Force’s Mi-17v5 helicopter carrying him, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 other military personnel crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. Singh had been battling for his life at the Air Force Command Hospital, Bengaluru and had been the only survivor from the crash. With Singh’s death, all 14 passengers of the helicopter have now died. The IAF said in a tweet that it is “deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21”.

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli on Wednesday opened up on how the entire process of naming Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain, in place of him, transpired. Virat, while addressing the media before the team’s departure for the Test series in South Africa, said that he was informed by the selectors that he won’t be the ODI captain anymore just one and a half hours before the Test squad for the South Africa series was announced and that there was no prior communication on the same from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “On the contrary, the BCCI called it a progressive step and in the right direction. At that time I had communicated that, yes I would like to continue

in Tests and ODIs unless office-bearers and selectors think that I shouldn’t carry on with this responsibility. “I had clarified on my call and communication to BCCI was clear. I had given that option if office bearers and selectors think otherwise, then it’s in their hands (their call),” he added. This statement of Virat’s contradicts the statements made by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly over the past few days. Ganguly had mentioned that he had personally spoken to Kohli about the decision to name Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain and that so did chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma.

A

ctors Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora have tested positive for Covid-19. Both have mild symptoms and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked them to remain in home quarantine. Both are doubly vaccinated and had attended a few public events with celebrities before they tested positive. “The BMC is tracking all their close contacts,” said Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, health. Kapoor and Arora were tested on Saturday and results came on Sunday. So far, 30 of their high risk contacts have been traced and their Covid-19

test results are expected Tuesday. As per protocol, their houses have been sealed, BMC officials said. Sanjay Kapoor’s wife Maheep Kapoor has tested positive for Covid-19, the actor confirmed to indianexpress.com. Kapoor said that Maheep is doing okay and is currently experiencing mild Covid symptoms. “Yes, she is Covid positive with mild symptoms and she has self-isolated,” Sanjay told Monday night. Modern music is like junk food, it is everywhere’ Lyricist Sameer Lyricist Sameer Anjaan has been in the industry for many decades now, having given us several hit songs in films from the 80s, 90s, early 2000s, and also the current decade. The ace songwriter, however, is also aware that music in Indian films has changed now, and that there is more attention given to the ‘sound’ than the actual ‘lyrics’ of a song. In a press release, the lyricist mentioned that it has always been his “dream to teach people to become songwriters”. “When you write lyrics, there are many nuances one needs to take care of, but if you know how to approach all the challenges that are going to come your way, you can really excel.” As a lyric writer, I feel the change that has occurred now, is popularly known as ‘modern music’. The new generation brings in their own mindset, colour and thought process. I believe the lyrical value is changing and deteriorating now and sound is gaining more importance. It is more like junk food as it is everywhere, but the audience needs a new sound. It is not good for the future though. In my initial stage of career, the music industry was too different. Every 25 years, the music industry changes because of the new style that comes in.

you started with negative roles. Did you fear being stereotyped and how challenging was it to break out from that image? By staying away from the temptation of appreciation and money. One has to steer away from it to be able to work according to their satisfaction. They also need to have patience. I have always believed that I will work and earn enough to give my family a comfortable life. Cashing in on something will make you earn a lot but you will lose mental peace. Also, I never wanted to be part of the rat race. As far as negative roles are concerned, I always did those with a positive attitude. And that is the reason I have films like Dushman, Sangharsh, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, Mulk, Simmba, Sonchiraiya, or more recently Pagglait and Chhatrasal. I may have played grey characters in all of them but each one is so different from the other. I don’t judge characters as negative or positive, I only look at them as performances.

T

he demise of cash is near. As consumers, though, we should hope that the end doesn’t arrive too soon. It isn’t the pandemic that’s putting this popular means of payment out of existence. All that Covid-19 has done is to accelerate a trend that was already with us. When Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, he began killing the need for banknotes. Autonomous cars, self-ordering refrigerators and our digital avatars in the metaverse will put the final nails in King Cash’s coffin. Covid-19 shifted $5 trillion in global retail sales from offline to online. To the extent that a big chunk of this value was transacted in cash (47% in the euro area), the idea that central-bank-issued currency was a must for purchasing daily essentials took a knock. After an initial bump in precautionary cash hoarding, curbs on mobility and the fear of catching germs from handling paper money forced a change in habits. Where governments gave out vouchers to perk up spending — like in Hong Kong — millions of consumers and thousands of merchants became new users of online payment systems just to utilize the handouts. Many will likely continue using these new ways to settle bills. But just how crucial were these changes in the overall scheme of things? The different trajectory of banknotes in China and India provides a natural experiment to gauge the relative importance of temporary shocks and steady technological change. Cash use plummeted in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled 86% of the existing legal tender overnight as part of a botched economic experiment. That was five years ago. Nowadays, digital payments are booming, but cash is once again 14% of the broad money circulating in the economy — the same as before demonetization. In China, where physical currency was made irrelevant by the growing ubiquity of Alipay and WeChat Pay, the central bank’s IOUs to the public account for only 4% of money. Technological progress lacks the drama of a behavioral shock, but it’s no less stunning. As JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s

Cash is dying all over the world but we aren’t ready to bury it yet

Jeremy Balkin and Neha Wattas remind us, the fastest way to move money from New York to London as recently as 2010 was to catch a flight from JFK to Heathrow and deliver it in person. Their report, provocatively titled “Payments Are Eating the World,” notes several shifts taking place in unison. In China, super-app platforms transformed money; elsewhere, the rise of a creator and gig economy is doing it. Globally, 50 million people are blogging, making short videos or telling people what to buy on the internet — and getting paid online as well. Digital wallets are mushrooming everywhere, but what gets stored on them is changing because of another technological revolution: blockchain. Fintech firm Circle has teamed with Visa Inc. to enable business customers to spend USD Coin — a currency on the Ethereum blockchain that pegs its value to the dollar — with 70 million merchants. An equally important phenomenon is “buy now, pay later,” which is embedding finance (and cashless payments) even into low-value transactions: like buying lipstick in three installments. Wait until each of our 15 internetof-things de vices do es its own shopping, using central bank-issued programmable digital cash to pay only when they get the right stuff. While all this is happening in the real world, an entirely new parallel stream of consumption in the alternate reality of the metaverse could be as substantial as

If all the money in circulation is private, controlled by e-commerce and social media platforms, authorities won’t be able to protect consumers from being exploited. Which is why even in countries where technology has turned it into an anachronistic appendage, cash can’t be allowed to die. Not before CBDCs are ready.Bloomberg

$390 billion by 2025. Innovation in payments is an even bigger phenomenon in emerging markets than in developed economies. Last month, smartphone-based apps running on a shared public utility cleared the equivalent of $100 billion in domestic Indian payments, rising from less than $15 million five years earlier. And this is just the beginning. Alphabet Inc.’s Google, which alone handled $38 billion of these instantaneous transfers, has now developed an Android-based sub-$100 phone. The idea is to bring mobile internet to the bottom of India’s consumption pyramid. Cash is still coveted, especially in a highly informal economy like India’s. But its importance as a means of payment is declining. In 2003, about

35% of cash in the euro area was used in domestic transactions; that number fell to an estimated 20% in 2019. Anywhere between 30% to half of banknotes have ended up overseas, while the rest are being hoarded in the euro zone: To some investors, a safe sovereign liability that pays zero is better than negativeyielding government bonds. As cash vanishes into vaults — without a central bank digital currency, or CBDC, replacing it — the public’s trust in the convertibility of deposits into official money may become “more of a theoretical construct than a daily experience,” according to a recent research paper by the European Central Bank’s Ulrich Bindseil and others. That can destabilize entire financial systems.

More NYC Omicron Cases Likely Soon Scholarships to Turn Into Torrent: Mayor Blaiso Available to Help HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Health Commissioner of New York City Dave Chokshi said the known omicron cases are consistent with community transmission. NEW YORK, NY- A trickle of omicron coronavirus variant cases in New York City is likely soon to turn into a torrent, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “I think it’s too early to say we’ve seen any clusters, but I think we’re going to see more and more cases very quickly over the coming weeks,” he said Wednesday. Eight omicron cases so far have been confirmed in the city since the variant was first detected in the five boroughs last week, health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said. Those cases prompted de Blasio — and officials across the country — to start amping up measures to combat the variant, which shows signs of being highly transmissible.

This week, de Blasio went farther than any other city in the country and announced a strict coronavirus vaccination mandate for all private employers. The measure and tightened rules for unvaccinated people in indoor spaces will not only help fight against omicron, but also the delta variant that is spiking across the city, de Blasio said. Health Commissioner of New York City Dave Chokshi said the known omicron cases are consistent with community transmission.“We are not seeing any significant clusters at this moment, and what that means is that known Omicron cases are not linked to any one individual or event, but consistent with community transmission,” he said.

The new Miss Universe is… Harnaaz Sandhu

The pageant included traditional displays of national costumes, evening gowns and swimwear, as well as a series of interview questions to test contestants' public speaking skills.

H

arnaaz Sandhu of India was crowned the 70th Miss Universe on Sunday, topping a field of some 80 contestants in a pageant that was touched by politics and the

pandemic. The previously reigning Miss Universe, Andrea Meza of Mexico, crowned her successor, a Bollywood actress, in the Israeli Red Sea resort town of Eilat. The pageant was held in the middle of the night, wrapping up at 5 a.m. local time (10 p.m. EST) to accommodate the primetime schedule in the U.S. The pageant included traditional displays of national costumes, evening gowns and swimwear, as well as a series of interview questions to test contestants’ public speaking skills. A grassroots Palestinian-led boycott had urged contestants to skip the event to protest Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. In the end, only Malaysia, a predominantly Muslim country with close ties to the Palestinians, did not send a representative, citing the global COVID-19 situation. The South African government, which also strongly supports the Palestinian cause, withdrew support for the country’s representative over her participation. In an interview last month, Meza urged contestants to leave politics out of the pageant, saying the gathering was meant to bring together women from different backgrounds. “When you are in there you forget about politics, about your religion,” she told The Associated Press at the time. Sara Salansky, an official with the Israeli Tourism Ministry, said the country was selected to host the contest earlier this year because of Israel’s successful coronavirus vaccination program. The contest also suffered a last-minute hiccup with the arrival of the omicron variant, which forced Israel

to close its borders to foreign tourists late last month. Most of the Miss Universe contestants were already in the country before the new regulations came into effect. But those who came afterward were given special permission to enter, albeit with a mandatory 72-hour quarantine period. Throughout the run-up to Sunday’s contest, all contestants were tested for the coronavirus every 48 hours and required to obey strict mask requirements. Amid all the safeguards, France’s contestant, Clemence Botino, tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after arriving in Israel. After 10 days in quarantine, she was declared virus free last week and allowed to rejoin the competition. Last year’s pageant was delayed due to the pandemic before Meza was crowned in May for her abbreviated tenure. Sunday’s contest was hosted by U.S. TV personality Steve Harvey. Organizers said the pageant was expected to reach an estimated 600 million viewers via the FOX network in 172 countries. Lara Dutta wrote: "My dearest Harnaaz Sandhu, when I spoke to you yesterday, you promised me that 'it will be worth it.' You are worth all your triumphant glory and much, much more! You had an unshakeable belief in yourself and just knew, you were born for this. You were born in the year I won Miss Universe. That's how long we've waited for you to come along and lift that crown once more for India."

Miss Universe 1994, Sushmita Sen too wished Harnaaz on her victory and she wrote in her note: "Yeh baat. Har Hindustani Ki Naz' Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu. Miss Universe 2021... India.. So proud of you." She added, "Congratulations Harnaaz Sandhu. Thank you for representing India so beautifully, for bringing back the Miss Universe Crown to India after 21 years (by a 21 year old, you were destined). May you enjoy every moment of learning and sharing this incredible global platform Miss Universe will provide you....May you Reign Supreme. My love and

With 162 boats to ferry athletes, Paris Olympics opening ceremony to be held on River Seine HiIndia Newsdesk

There will be 162 boats to ferry athletes from over 200 nations along the 6 km route for the parade, during which it will pass through some of Paris's most iconic monuments, including Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.

A river as the backdrop, athletes in boats and more than half a million people along the quays: the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, in July 2024, will be unlike any other in the Games’ 100-plus year history. Tony Estanguet, the Olympic gold medalist who is in charge of delivering the Paris Games, predicted that it will be a “true moment of marvellous madness” af te r re ve a l i ng t h e g r an d plans, also a potential security nightmare, on Monday. For the first time ever, an Olympic opening ceremony will be taken out of the stadium and in the

middle of the city, with the public being allowed to watch it for free. The idea is steeped in symbolism. The two Olympics that will precede the event in Paris — the Tokyo Olympics, held in July this year, and the Beijing Winter Games, scheduled for February 2022 — have been s e verely disr upte d by t he Covid-19 pandemic and largely been closed to the public. The opening ceremony and the sporting events at the Tokyo Games were held without any spectators while Beijing has barred foreign spectators for its Games.

The BCCI press advisory mentioned Rohit Sharma’s left hamstring injury and his subsequent withdrawal from the upcoming three-Test tour of South Africa, but it didn’t name a stop-gap vice-captain. Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad.

How long you should wait to exercise after eating

Best foods to eat before

A WORKOUT

1. Bananas

If you're in a rush and only have time for a quick snack right before your workout, you should grab a banana. "This is something that I always recommend to my clients who run straight from work to the gym," says Gyimah. "When you don't have a lot of time to digest food, a banana is a great option because your body digests it quickly and will provide carbohydrates for your workout." Bananas contain about double the amount of carbohydrates as other fruits like apples and oranges, so they're a more substantial snack that can fuel a lengthy workout, she says.

2. Whole grains

"Whole grains are complex carbs that pack a lot of energy," Gyimah says. "The carbohydrates are also slower to be released into your bloodstream, so you won't have a blood sugar spike and crash." This can help you sustain energy levels through an endurance workout longer than 40 minutes. The best examples of whole grains to eat before your workout include: Brown rice Quinoa Whole-grain or multigrain bread You may also want to incorporate fruits and vegetables along with your whole grains. For example, you can have brown rice or quinoa with peas, which contain protein, and leafy greens, which are packed with important vitamins. To fuel their workouts, Gyimah tells her clients, "Before you

go, you need the CHO" — the "c" is carbohydrates and the "HO" is water. Eating those vegetables or fruits, which are water-rich carbohydrates, can help your body perform at its peak. Because they take longer to digest, Gyimah says you should try to eat whole grains about an hour before your workout. Marcellus recommends a half-cup to a cup of whole grains as a beneficial serving size.

3. Oats

When Gyimah was playing competitive volleyball in college, oats were her go-to pre-workout meal. "Similar to whole grains, they provide tons of energy and are slower to be released," she says. Since oats can feel heavy and take a while to digest, it's best to reserve this snack for when you have more than an hour for digestion before a workout. Any type of oats — like steel-cut or whole — can provide a good pre-workout meal.

4. Yogurt and fruit

If you have about half an hour before your workout, yogurt and fruit can be a useful snack. "This is a great source of carbohydrates, some fluids, and protein as well," Gyimah says. You should opt for an unsweetened yogurt for optimal health benefits. This provides enough fuel, without giving you excess sugar. And if you don't eat dairy, a plant or nutbased yogurt alternative, like coconut yogurt or almond-milk yogurt, can provide the same benefits, Gyimah says.

D

istance runners will also want to eat high-carbohydrate meals well in advance of a marathon. Some dietitians recommend carbo-loading two to three days before a race with pasta, rice, and potatoes. With physical activities sustained over long periods of time, the body uses stored carbohydrates and fats for energy consumption, and Rowe says you'll need to load up ahead of time to stay fresh for the final miles. "When there are no carbohydrates readily available in the bloodstream, the body relies on energy stores called glycogen, which can get depleted during an intense or long exercise session and hinder your performance," Rowe says. Just make sure you don't show up to the race hungry — a granola bar or banana 30 minutes to one hour before you head to the starting line should do the trick. And you should probably stay away from any high-fat foods immediately before exercise.

Dr. Fauci says it's 'tough to tell' if there will be a need for annual COVID-19 booster, but if there is, 'then we'll just have to deal with it' HiIndia Newsdesk

Dr. Fauci can't say for sure whether people will need a yearly vaccine booster shot amid the COVID Omicron variant. Also added that boosters provide the optimal protection against the worst effects of COVID.

Dr. Anthony Fauci can't say whether people will need annual COVID-19 COVID-19 boosters, a question being posed by many as new variants of the coronavirus, like Omicron, arise. "It's tough to tell," Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said during an interview Sunday on ABC News "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that besides an increased level of protection against the coronavirus, a booster could increase the durability of the immune system's protection, which won't be measurable for a "period of months." "If it becomes necessary to get yet another boost, then we'll just have to deal with it when that occurs," Fauci added. "But I'm hoping, from an immunological standpoint, that that third shot of an mRNA and the second shot of a J&J will give a much greater durability of protection than just the six months or so that we're seeing right now," he said, referring to vaccines made by Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, respectively.

Conversations about the booster shots have become more prevalent as the US has seen COVID-19 cases climb, and concern grow about the more contagious Omicron variant. Since November, the Omicron variant has been detected in at least 25 states, most recently in Florida and Texas. The majority of Omicron cases in the US have reported mild symptoms so far, but the variant may be more resistant to basic COVID vaccine protections as most cases of Omicron in the US appear in fully vaccinated individuals. A booster following a primary vaccination has drastically decreased the severity of illness or likelihood of death, Fauci said. A Pfizer-BioNTech study also found that a booster shot could help restore the immune system's protection against COVID-19 to original levels. The scientific community is still studying the long-term protections of boosters. "We have the tools to protect ourselves, and that's the thing we keep saying over and over again," Fauci said, noting 100 million Americans are now eligible for boosters. "

World’s highest 360-degree infinity pool opens in Dubai

We prioritise each other in everything

“We’ll have an opinion on each other’s things, we’ll be each other champions but those decisions are predominantly for both of us to take, because we’ve built our careers by ourselves for such a long time,” Priynka added. “I think at the same time, it’s very important to keep a check on another person’s heart and how they’re feeling. And I have to say, my husband’s amazing at doing that. Like I said, this year was hard for me being in London. He would just drop everything — come in for even, like a day — just to have dinner with me and fly back. Stuff like that, you just have to prioritise each other and then everything feels right,” Priynka mentioned.

Set at a height of 200 metres, Aura Skypool is located on the 50th floor of the Palm Tower and offers visitors incredible views of the iconic Dubai skyline, Palm Jumeirah and the horizon of the Arabian Gulf Dubai, which is home to some record-breaking scenic destinations, has added yet another feather to its cap as it now houses the world’s first and highest 360-degree infinity pool. Set at a height of 200 metres, Aura Skypool is located on the 50th floor of the Palm Tower and offers visitors incredible views of the iconic Dubai skyline, Palm Jumeirah and the horizon of the Arabian Gulf. “Aura is one-of-a-kind experience triggering all the senses and a truly unmissable spot to capture the essence of Dubai at new heights,” the official website stated. “Aura is truly unlike any other destination in the UAE and the world,” said Antonio Gonzalez, CEO of Sunset Hospitality, the company behind the infinity pool, CNN reported. “With 360-degree views of some of the world’s most iconic sights, from the manmade Palm Jumeirah — celebrating this year 20 years since its construction — through to Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and Ain Dubai — all in one view, it’s a breathtaking new destination that will continue to showcase the very best of Dubai.”

‘Salted Caramel Makhana is legit

Makhana or foxnut not only makes for a great snack option, it is also extremely nutritious and a pantry-staple amongst weight watchers and fitness enthusiasts. It has also been touted as a better, healthier, and desi alternative to instant popcorn, and Chef Saransh Goila’s take on it will make you want to try it right away.

Ingredients:

*100g – Makhana/foxnuts *1 cup – sugar *2 tbsp – Butter *½ tbsp – Salt *Pinch of baking soda

Method:

Roast the makhana at 150 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes. Melt the sugar in a pan. Add the butter, salt and baking soda and mix it all together. Pour this mixture over roasted makhana. Mix and spread it well. Put it on a plate to let it cool. Separate as many of them as you can.

Steve Harvey asked Miss India to do an animal impression

Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu seemed taken by surprise as Harvey told her: "I hear you do some pretty good animal impersonations. Let's hear your best one." "Oh, my God, Steve, I was not expecting to do this on the world stage," she told him. But she took it all in stride. "I have to do this — I have no other option," she joked. Sandu said that since she loved cats she would do her best to impersonate one. "Brace yourself everyone," she warned, before letting out a few impressive "meows." It was a moment that stood out to many viewers, who questioned why Sandhu hadn't been given a meaningful moment to share more about herself. Miss Panama Brenda Smith was able to talk about getting a position at the UN, and Miss Great Britain Emma Collingridge discussed how learning about Medusa's origin story inspired her to fight against gender-based violence. Sandhu, 21, is a women'sempowerment advocate who has helped her mother teach women's health and hygiene at camps. The pageant queen works as an actor and told Insider she'd done two Punjabi feature films that would be released soon. Sandhu said she always chose strong characters because she wanted to "break stereotypes of what women are and what they can be." "I hope I get to inspire people by following my passion and my heart," she added.

PM inaugurates Kashi Vishwanath corridor, says new history being created HiIndia Newsdesk

All BJP Chief Ministers and over 3,000 seers are attending the big event, which is crucial for the party ahead of the state polls next year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Kashi Vishwanath corridor during his two-day visit to Varanasi. In his address, he stated that a new history is being created with the project. He also urged Indians to make a commitment to — sanitation, innovation and an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Prior to that, PM Modi took a holy dip in river Ganga and offered prayers. He was received by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when he landed in Varanasi and had a rousing welcome from the people of his Lok Sabha constituency. The temple city’s Rs 339-crore project, the foundation of which was laid by Modi on March 8, 2019, has been completed in less than three years as planned, despite the Covid pandemic.

Later in the evening, the PM will witness Ganga Aarti while onboard a Ro-Ro Vessel with chief ministers and deputy CMs of various BJP-ruled states accompanying him. On Tuesday, he will address a conclave of 12 BJP CMs and nine deputy CMs where they will share best governance practices in their respective states, an official said. With the UP Assembly elections around the corner, different political parties have sought credit for the recent development projects in the state such as the Purvanchal Expressway, which was inaugurated last month. For the Kashi Vishwanath corridor as well, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday claimed the project was approved during his term and he has documents to prove it.

“The overall risk related to the new variant of concern Omicron remains very high for a number of reasons,” it said, reiterating its first assessment of November 29.

GENEVA: The Omicron coronavirus variant, reported in more than 60 countries, poses a “very high” global risk, with some evidence that it evades vaccine protection but clinical data on its severity remain limited, the World Health Organization says. Considerable uncertainties surround Omicron, first detected last month in South Africa and Hong Kong, whose mutations may lead to higher transmissibility and more cases of COVID-19 disease, the WHO said in a technical brief issued on Sunday. “The overall risk related to the new variant of concern Omicron remains very high for a number of reasons,” it said, reiterating its first assessment of Nov. 29. “And second, preliminary evidence suggests potential humoral immune escape against infection and high transmission rates, which could lead to further surges with severe consequences,” the WHO said, referring to the virus’ potential ability to evade immunity provided by antibodies.

Remarks by former Supreme Court Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi in a recent interview to the NDTV have led to the filing of a privilege motion against him by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor. At least 10 other parliamentarians, from different parties, are expected to move similar motions. During the interview, aired on December 9, Gogoi was asked about his attendance in Parliament. The former CJI had cited Covid curbs and discomfort with the lack of social distancing and seating arrangements, adding: “I go to the RS when I feel like, when I think there are matters of importance on which I should speak. I am a nominated member, not governed by any party whip.” Asked about him joining the Rajya Sabha just four months after retiring as CJI, Gogoi said: “What is this magic about RS? I would have been better off in terms of pay, emoluments if I had been a chairman of a tribunal.”
