US House resolution commits to work with Modi government The resolution seeks to further strengthen US strategic partnership with India in areas like defense, trade and security IANS, WASHINGTON
A
s the US reaches out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a dozen lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan congressional resolution committing to working with his government “to advance shared values and interests”. Co-sponsored among others by lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera and the first Hindu-American lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, the resolution also seeks “to further strengthen our strategic partnership with India, including in the defense, trade, and security arenas.” The resolution “congratulates the people of India on holding the largest democratic exercise in history of the world”. Introduced by Republican Aaron Schock, the resolution’s other co-sponsors included chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce and the top

to voice their commitment to “continuing to strengthen our strategic partnership.” The resolution “marks a shift in US policy and signals growing congressional support, puts forth
the official position of the House of Representatives on this matter of national and global importance,” Schock said. Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on May 31 said he is planning to visit India later this year to drive “transformational cooperation” with the country which is playing an “active role” in strengthening security in Asia. Hagel, referring to India's growing defense capabilities, said the United States looked forward to working with the new Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We welcome India's increasingly active role in Asia's regional institutions, which strengthens regional order. We also welcome India's growing defense capabilities and its commitment to freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean,” Hagel said in a wide-ranging policy speech at an international security conference, the Shangri la dialogue, in Singapore.
US official headed for Delhi to build bridges with Modi WASHINGTON: The US is sending Nisha Desai Biswal, its pointperson for South Asia, to build bridges with the new Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom it had shunned for over a decade, Biswal, the first IndianAmerican Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, will be in New Delhi June 6-9, making the first visit to India Nisha Desai Biswal by a senior State Department official since India’s national elections brought Modi to power. While in New Delhi, “she will meet with a range of officials in the new Government of India to review the full scope of bilateral and regional issues,” the State department announced. Biswal’s travel announcement comes a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry called up new Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to congratulate her and discuss “re-energizing strategic” ties.
State Department did it: Bharara on Khobragade Mani Shankar Aiyar’s comment WASHINGTON: Manhattan’s Indiaborn US prosecutor has defended his role in the arrest and prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, saying it was the State Department that opened the case. The December arrest and alleged strip search of Khobragade, India’s then deputy consul general in New York on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her housekeeper, caused a major diplomatic row that threatened to derail India-US relations. But in a speech laced with humor at Harvard Law school, Bharara insisted that he became “personally aware” that Khobragade would be arrested only a couple of days before the arrest was scheduled. He was upset

over the “stupid” criticism of his conduct and was bothered by the “line of attack” made by the Indian government and media. It was suggested that he brought the case to “serve his white masters, presumably (US Attorney General) Eric Holder and (President) Barack
Obama”, both of whom are black. “Indian critics were angry because even though I hailed from India, I appeared to be going out of my way to act American and serve the interests of America, which was odd because I am American and the words US are in my title,” he said. Bharara’s Harvard address got less play in the US media than IndianAmerican actress Mindy Kaling’s hilarious speech though the celebrity prosecutor “managed to combine humor and wisdom, in magnificent fashion”, David Lat commented in Above the Law. Bharara has successfully prosecuted 79 high-profile Wall Street executives, including Indian-American Rajat Gupta.

U
S Secretary of State John Kerry called up External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to congratulate her on ministerial posting and discussed “re-energizing strategic” ties, an official said on May 29. Kerry called up Sushma Swaraj late on May 28 night. It was the first congratulatory call that she received from one of her counterparts around the world.

“The US secretary congratulated the minister and the party (BJP) on its election victory,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs told IANS. Kerry spoke about the economic agenda of the new Indian government and said the US was keen to boost bilateral trade to $500 billion from the current around $100 billion. Sushma thanked the US secretary of state and spoke about enhancing the Indo-US strategic partnership.

hen he made his now infamous comment about the recently elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi being a ‘chai wala’, Congress spokesperson Mani Shankar Aiyar may not have had any inkling that the comment would give an impetus to Indian-Americans to launch a ‘chai pe charcha’ movement to help Modi win the prime ministership. While, several Indian Americans in major cities across the United States campaigned for Modi’s election, the most organized movement was in Houston, Texas, where, since January this year, a group of about 700 worked round the clock to motivate voters in India. The volunteer group intensified their efforts in the two months preceding the voting. “The preparations were almost like that for an Indian wedding,” said Ramesh Bhutada, a Houston businessman and philanthropist, who was one of the prime movers of the campaign. “We had volunteers calling up their relatives, friends and friend of friends in India.” Initially, the focus of the phone calls was to get people to participate in the voting process. were told that they finally had the power to change the destiny of the country. “Some of the voters — especially the middle aged and elderly — appeared very cynical,” Bhutada said. Later in the phone campaign, the volunteers asked the voters to look at Modi’s candidature citing his economic development track record in Gujarat. In addition, several hundred Indian-Americans traveled to India to participate physically in the election campaign for Modi and the BJP.

In a big blow to the week-long BJP government, Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde killed in an early morning road accident in Delhi; Nation mourns
An emotional adieu to Munde T IANS, NEW DELHI
he week-old government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was dealt a blow on June 3 when Gopinath Munde, a senior cabinet minister who looked after three portfolios, including rural development, died after an early morning road accident in central Delhi. Munde, 64, a senior BJP leader who was once deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, was going to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, to catch a flight to Mumbai, in his Maruti Suzuki SX4 car when he was hit by a Tata Indica on the Prithviraj Road fivepoint crossing around 6.20 a.m., police said. Munde’s personal security officer (PSO) was sitting in the front next to the driver and the minister was seated behind him. The Tata Indica hit SX4 with great force from the side where Munde was seated. Due to the force of the impact, Munde fell down in the car and was helped to sit up by his PSO. Munde asked for water and told his driver to rush him to hospital before losing consciousness. The minister died of “shock and hemorrhage”, according to the preliminary autopsy report submitted by AIIMS to Delhi Police. “In this case (it) is a shock and hemorrhage consequent upon blunt ante-mortem injuries to the neck and liver,” said the report that was submitted on June 3 night to Delhi Police. “His (Munde) passing away is a huge loss for the people of Maharashtra and India. We have lost a veteran leader who always worked for the common man.”
“Deeply shocked to know about (Gopinath) Munde’s demise. He was a grassroot leader and known for his concern for poor people and farmers.”

Amit Gupta said: “Munde was brought to the emergency department of Jai Prakash Narain Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS at 6:30 a.m by his personal assistant and driver. “Despite resuscitative measures, Munde could not be revived and was declared dead at 7:20 a.m.,” Gupta told reporters. “There were no grievous external injuries. It seems, he had a cardiac arrest after the impact,”
Gupta said, indicating the minister may have died of shock caused by the accident and internal injuries. Munde was a diabetic patient. Gurvinder Singh, 32, driver of the Indica car, was arrested. Police are checking whether he had consumed alcohol the night before. Munde’s death came a day after his name was mentioned as a contender for the post of Maharashtra chief minister after the assembly elections this year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Munde as “a true mass leader” and said he was “extremely saddened and shocked” by the minister’s death. Besides rural development, the BJP leader also held the portfolios of panchayati raj as well as drinking water and sanitation — all crucial portfolios from the perspective of rural India. The mortal remains of the departed leader were consigned to the flames in Parali-Vaijnath, his
NEW DELHI: Union minister Gopinath Munde’s sudden death in a road accident has created a political vacuum for BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will now have to find a suitable replacement in crucial social sector ministries including rural development. A genial politician with friends across the political spectrum, the 64year-old Munde’s being tasked with portfolios of rural development, drinking water and sanitation and panchayati raj was considered appropriate in political circles for his grassroots connect, his accessibility and his understanding of problems of people in rural areas. It was an indication of Modi’s trust in the departed leader that the Prime Minister entrusted him with three portfolios, a privilege shared by Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu. opinath Munde, a farmer’s son who became the nation’s rural development minister, was adept at building bridges with other parties in the state and became the foremost BJP leader in Maharashtra after the sudden death of his brotherin-law, party strongman Pramod Mahajan in May 2006. This was until his erstwhile junior ministerial colleague in the Maharashtra government in 199499, Nitin Gadkari shot into the limelight on being elected BJP national president in 2009 to salvage the party after its humiliating defeat in the general elections that
year. Born as the third child among five in a middle-class farmer family of Parali in Beed district in the backward Marathwada region, Munde studied in a government school where classes were conducted under a tree, before joining a district-level high school and later did his graduation from a college in Ambejogai. During his college days, Munde met a sauve, soft-spoken young man, Pramod Mahajan, who coaxed him to join the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Later, during the Emergency of 1975-1977 he was jailed for nearly three years as an RSS activist. After working as a legislator of the Shiv Sena-BJP opposition in

the state, in December 1991 Munde was catapulted to Leader of Opposition. In the Maharashtra assembly elections held in 1995, the saffron alliance emerged the surprise winner. While Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi became the state’s first Brahmin chief minister, Munde was made the deputy chief minister and home minister for the SS-BJP government’s full term before it was voted out in 1999. His tenure as home minister became famous for the free hand he gave the Mumbai and state police to eliminate mafia dons and gangsters in what came to be known as the dreaded ‘encounter killings’ by the police.

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi’s first Sunday in office was a busy one with a packed schedule which included both official and party meetings. The Prime Minister, however, did not attend his South Block office and worked from his 7 RCR official residence, a senior PMO official told IANS. After working through the morning, the Prime Minister began his appointments by meeting the Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan, who called on him. Following this, Modi visited Vice President Hamid Ansari at the
latter’s residence. After the meeting with the Vice President, Modi went to the BJP headquarters at Ashoka Road where he thanked party workers for the BJP’s big win in the Lok Sabha election. Addressing the gathering of 300350 workers, he said he had become the Prime Minister because of their hard work. On June 2, Modi met members of his council of ministers and is understood to have laid thrust on good and efficient governance and time-bound implementation of programs undertaken by government. In the marathon meeting that lasted for over three hours, the discussions are believed to have dwelled
Yakub Memon’s execution withheld NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on June 2 suspended execution of the death sentence of 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case convict Yakub Abdul Razak Memon as it issued notice to the central government on his petition challenging the apex court’s rules guiding the review of capital punishment order. Suspending Yakub Memon’s execution, a bench of Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan tagged his plea with that of December 2000 Red Fort attack death row convict Mohamed Arif. President Pranab Mukherjee on May 21 rejected
Memon’s mercy plea. He had applied for Presidential pardon in October 2013. Appearing for Memon, senior counsel Upamanyu Hazarika told the Yakoob Memon court that the Law Commission in its report in 2003 said that the appeal in death sentence cases in the Supreme Court should be heard by a five-judge bench but note d this recommendation has not been acted upon so far.
SC lifts freeze on Sahara assets NEW DELHI: Sahara group chief Subrata Roy will remain in jail even as the Supreme Court on June 4 lifted the freeze on the group’s moveable and immovable assets so it could raise `100 billion for part repayment to investors. The Sahara group had told the Supreme Court on May 29 that it was selling its three prime properties in London and New York to raise money to secure the release of Subrata Roy and two other directors. An apex court bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice A.K. Sikri allowed Sahara to
encash its fixed deposits, bonds and securities and the money so generated will be deposited in an account opened by market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The court also allowed Sahara to sell its properties located in nine cities to generate the balance `50 billion that it has to pay SEBI in cash. The court also allowed Sahara to mortgage its Aambey Valley property to raise a bank guarantee of `50 billion. The court had directed Sahara to return investors’ `240 billion, collected by SIRECL and SHICL.

he U.S. is “horrified” to learn of violent sexual assaults and murders in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, the State Department said. “Like, I think, so many in India, we were horrified to learn of these violent sexual assaults and murders,” Marie Harf, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson, said at the daily press briefing on June 3. “Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time,” Harf said while responding to questions on the brutal gang-rape and murder of two teenaged girls last week in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district. She, however, applauded many individuals, government officials, and civil society groups in India that are working to protect the survivors and prevent gender-based violence. The United Nations too condemned the gang rape and murder and called for immediate action against the perpetrators and to address violence against women across India. “There should be justice for the families of the two teenaged girls and for all the women and girls from lower caste communities, who are

targeted and raped in rural India. Violence against women is not a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue,” Lise Grande, resident coordinator of the UN system in India, said in a statement. The statement said the UN system in India stands united with people across the country to do what it takes to ensure that every woman and girl can live safely and with dignity. “Every girl and woman should be able to live safely, feel protected and grow up free of violence,” said Rebecca Tavares, UN Women’s Representative in India.
Tavares said amongst the many actions that need to be taken, the UN encourages the speedier application of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013, including the establishment of the one-stop crisis centers. “The justice system is key to address the problem,” she said. However, she added that having the laws in place are only one part of the solution — their implementation also matters, as does changing mind-sets. “Violence against women and girls is preventable, not inevitable,” Tavares said.

Indian Americans, who have won the championship eleven times in the last 16 years, swept the top three spots this year as they did in the previous two years. This year 281 spellers from eight countries competed for the coveted title in the national championship sponsored by English-language newspapers and educational foundations in the US. The contestants spell out a broad selection of words with increasing degree of difficulty testing one’s vocabulary and usage. “The competition was against the dictionary, not against each other,” Sriram said after both were showered with confetti onstage after being declared joint winners for the first time since 1962. “I’m happy to share this trophy with him,” said 13 year old Sujoe. “Whatever,” said Sujoe, 7th grader from Fort Worth, Texas, as the seconds ticked down at the contest at the National Harbour Thursday night.
NRI fundraiser in holocaust body WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has appointed Shefali Razdan Duggal, a top Indian-American fundraiser of his 2012 re-election campaign, as a member of the governing board of trustees of the US Holocaust Memorial museum. Duggal’s appointment to the 55-member US Holocaust Memorial Council for a five-year term was announced by the White House. “The extraordinary dedication these men and women bring to their new roles will greatly serve the AmerShefali R Duggal ican people,” said Obama. She is also a co-chair for the ‘Ready for Hillary PAC’, a key political action committee that is “encouraging” former secretary of state to run for president in 2016. chomythia.” The duo spelling victory for Indian-Americans for the seventh time in a row shared the title and a $30,000 scholarship. The last co-champions were in 1962. Before that joint winners were declared in 1950 and 1957. In the final-round duel, Ansun and Sriram were both named champions after spelling a dozen words correctly in a row and nearly exhausting the 25 designated championship words.
WASHINGTON: As two youngsters of Indian descent spelled history by jointly winning the coveted Scripps National Spelling Bee for a record seventh year in a row, they also stirred storm of racially charged comments in the U.S. The fact that Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe on May 29 night kept up the victory run of Indian-Americans that began in 1999 producing a dozen champions in the last 16 years, proved too much for some of them. It was “for the first time in more than 50 years, two young wordsmiths were declared co-champions” as the Washington Post noted. “However, some on social media seemed more preoccupied with their heritage than their way with words,” said the daily. Among the tweets cited by the Post were: “Where are our American kids?” And: “Nothing more American than a good spelling bee.. Oh wait all the Caucasians are eliminated - Cale Pieczynski (@CalePie).” The Washington Post also cited other comments on social media arguing “race has nothing do with where these spellers were born.” “wow that blows the spelling bee ends with a tie thats so friggin unAmerican no wonder the kids that won

Some on social media seemed more busy with their heritage than their way with words tweeted “Turns out spelling bees bring out a lot of racists: http://bit.ly/1kPI0n3.” “....so according to these geniuses, only Caucasians are “American” when it comes to the spelling bee?” responded Nicole Forbes from Austin, Texas. “Just because the face on the screen isn’t white, it doesn’t make the #spellingbee finalists any less American, commented Rebecca Hong. “Oh come on!! What is so un-american about them? Not satisfied with their buttoned up T shirts and a bow tie?????” tweeted amkere.

T
he Telugu Association of North America (TANA) is creating two special earmarked funds for the development of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh and for development of Telangana after the bifurcation of Andhra. The decision to set up Andhra Pradesh Capital Development Fund and Telangana Development Fund was taken by TANA Executive Committee at the request of several TANA mem-
bers who wanted to take a constructive role in the development of the two new states. TANA will consult with the respective state governments regarding the appropriate utilization and disbursement of these funds, TANA president Mohan Nannapaneni announced Friday. TANA president and secretary general and other members are working closely with state and central governments in identifying the projects and needs.

N
arendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) stunning election victory had put behind the issue of US visa for him and it’s unlikely to impact bilateral ties with the US, according to a noted Indian strategic expert. After his election victory, the new Indian prime minister had made it clear that how India engages with US bilaterally would not be impacted by how an individual was treated, Commodore (retd.) C Uday Bhaskar, Distinguished Fellow, Society for Policy Studies, said on June 3. But Modi, whose US visa was revoked in 2005 for his alleged complicity in the 2002 Gujarat riots, was unlikely to visit the US in a hurry, he said in a talk on “India-US Ties Under Narendra Modi” at the Hudson Institute, a Washington think tank. In Bhaskar’s view the UN general assembly session in September would be the first contact between the US and Indian leaders.
Modi’s first priority was the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Japan. Modi has little foreign policy experience yet he “hit the ground running” with an invitation to SAARC leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony. “With that one act Modi has energized a moribund SAARC,” Bhaskar said and he expected the new Indian leader to do the same with “moribund” India-US relations. Comparing the landmark India-US nuclear deal to the NixonKissinger opening to China, Bhaskar said it had not only “ended India’s nuclear isolation but also brought India into the larger global politico-diplomatic grid.” He also expected the new Indian parliament to revisit the nuclear issue as India’s tough liability law has practically stalled the deal. Modi was “very very aware of the global business environment,” he said and knows India needs to engage with the US to regain its 89 percent growth rate from the current 4.4 percent.

eader of Pakistan’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party Altaf Hussain was arrested in London on June 3 on charges of money laundering. The London Metropolitan Police said that a 60-year-old man has been arrested from a northwest London property on charges of money-laundering, but they declined to disclose the exact identity for “legal reasons”, Dawn online reported on June 3. Police said that a search operation was underway at the property in north-west London. Speaking to DawnNews, London-based journalist Farooq Shah said Hussain has been arrested and the police were searching his house. DawnNews quoted the Scotland Yard as saying that the investigation would continue for 24 hours. In the early 1990s, the MQM chief went into exile as the Pakistani government at the time conducted an operation in Karachi. ISLAMABAD: The port city of Karachi continued with its shutdown on June 4 in the wake of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s arrest for interrogation in London on June 3. Roads wore a deserted look, public transport was scant, petrol vends and shops were closed and a large number of MQM workers participated in sit-in protest, Dawn online reported. Protestors vowed to continue with the protest unless they heard Hussain’s voice. MQM workers in other cities of Pakistan also staged protests. A number of universities including Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) postponed the examinations scheduled for June 4.

The Taliban prisoners were released from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and handed over to Qatar, which mediated the transfer. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, 28, was handed over to US forces in good health, BBC quoted American officials as saying. He was the only US soldier held by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Ehsanullah Hayat, spokesman of Herat’s governor, confirmed the abduction of the Indian man and said he was working for a foreign organization. He went missing from Zenda Jan district of the province, the spokesman added. Police have launched a search operation to free the 47-year-old Indian aid worker, Fr. Alexis Prem Kumar, head of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) NGO. Zenda Jan is
around 35 km south of Herat City. No one has so far claimed responsibility. Meanwhile, India’s external affairs ministry said that it was pursuing the case with the authorities in Afghanistan. “Indian national working with an NGO in Herat province of Afghanistan has been kidnapped,” Syed Akbaruddin, external affairs ministry spokesperson, tweeted. Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. She was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh who had just returned from Afghanistan where she had gone to assess the security situation.
KATHMANDU/NEW DELHI: The death toll in June 3 bus accident in Gothibang in Nepal increased to 20, and seven of them have been identified as Indians, an official said. Ram Bahadur Kurumbang, chief district officer of Pyuthan district, said the Indians were identified as Suresh Kumar Sahu, 16, Gop Raj Gupta, 70, Saraswoti Sahani, 62, Suresh Sau, 15, Urmila Pandey, 66, Suvadra Yadav, 65, and Pinku Ojha, 24. At least 17 people were killed when a jampacked bus swerved off the road and plunged into the Madi river in Gothibang. On June 3, two criti-
cally injured people died at a hospital in Bhairahawa, a town on the border with India, while another critically injured man breathed his last at a hospital in Pyuthan. Phanindra Baral of the Pyuthan district hospital said 56 people were receiving treatment in Bhairahawa while one is undergoing treatment in Pyuthan. Kurumbang said the bodies of nine mem and seven women were sent to Bhairahawa after post mortem examination. The bus met with the accident while it was heading to Krishnanagar of Kapilvastu from Bhingri in Pyuthan.

Sri Lanka to release 29 Indian fishermen
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf chairman Imran Khan on June 2 said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was treated like a schoolboy when he visited India to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. By not meeting Hurriyat leaders in New Delhi, the PM had struck a bargain on Kashmir, Dawn online quoted Khan as saying. If Sharif could meet Indian leaders in Delhi, then why could he not hold a meeting with those representing the Hurriyat Conference, he asked.
COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of 29 Indian fishermen arrested last week for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, media reported on June 3. The Indian fishermen were the first batch to be arrested since Narendra Modi took office as Indian prime minister last week. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy off Thalaimannar in the north of the country Saturday and handed over to the fisheries department.

cannot hide Rahul’s failure The Gandhi dynasty is under direct attack and the person facing the flak is none other than Rahul Gandhi AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
D
espite Sonia Gandhi’s advice to Congressmen to avoid “public acrimony”, rumbling of discontent about the party’s miserable performance in the recent elections have continued. It will be a mistake, however, if the party tries to brush aside the prevailing sense of helpless anger within the organization as an apparently transient “expression of frustration arising out of defeat”, as senior general secretary Digvijaya Singh has done. His observation deserves serious attention since he is believed to convey the family’s views. Taken together, Sonia Gandhi’s and Digvijaya Singh’s comments suggest an attempt to paper over the
cracks that have appeared in the party. The ploy is understandable because, for the first time, the dynasty has come under direct attack. Moreover, the person facing the flak is none other than the party president’s choice to be the next leader, Rahul Gandhi. So far, the criticism of the heir apparent has been relatively muted, except for a Kerala Con-

gressman who called Rahul Gandhi a “joker” and paid for his candor by being suspended from the party. Others have either been more polite or sought refuge in anonymity or directed their fire on Rahul Gandhi’s advisers or confined themselves to lambasting unnamed “rootless wonders and spineless creepers”. There have also been attempts to pass the buck by blaming Manmohan Singh since his government was not a “good product” and, there-
fore, unsalable to the electorate. But the unambiguous upshot of the comments is the belief within the party that, first, Rahul Gandhi has proved to be a failure as a leader and, secondly, that unless he makes way for someone else, the Congress will not be able to dig itself out of its present hole. Since the party members cannot yet think beyond the family, it isn’t surprising that some of them are calling for Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra to take charge. But such a move is
fraught with difficulties. First, a change of guard in the top echelons will be a blow to Rahul Gandhi’s prestige. So, his sister is unlikely to respond to the proposals. Secondly, the move will not have Sonia Gandhi’s blessings since she apparently still reposes faith in Rahul Gandhi’s abilities. This assessment is substantiated by Digvijaya Singh’s appeal to Rahul Gandhi to be the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha because a leader “has to lead from the front”.
Ministry for minorities: Tokenism yet again? The Congress party has been using Muslims as safe vote banks SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI
T
he appointment of a minister for minority affairs has been a huge let down. During the election campaign, Modi had stated that he would be the prime minister of all 1.25 billion Indians. So demoralized has the Muslim been in recent years that a simple promise of equal rights was music to his ears. What the Congress has done to him in six decades of independence is clear in the Sachar Committee Report of 2006. In it he saw his decomposing visage. So deep was the rot, that anything the Congress did to keep the pretense, was no more than a highly advertised relief camp for administering palliatives — a Ministry for Minority Affairs here, a Minority Commission

Jawaharlal Nehru who wore the Shervani with a rose in the button hole, spoke Urdu, visited Maulana Azad once a week and
befriended left leaning Arab leaders the Muslim felt he was being led by one of his very own. Mahatma Gandhi secured the Muslim’s right flank: he supported Maulana Mohammad Ali’s call to save the “Khalifa” in Turkey. And what were the gifts handed to the Muslims? The leadership banned Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, reversed the Supreme Court judgement on Shah Bano, delayed upgradation of relations with Israel citing Muslim anxieties. In every instance, what profit for the Muslim? These steps, instead, further alienated him from the mainstream consensus. As part of this variety of tokenism, came the Ministry for Minority Affairs, the Minority commission, and sundry steps which issued from the party’s transparently insincere commitment to secularism. There were considerable expectations of the Congress. The cumulative effect of disappointments resulted in an irretrievable Muslim exodus from the party from 1989 to 2014.

Reality is we have no points: Walsh THE HAGUE: India’s chief hockey coach Terry Walsh was left dejected after the team again conceded a late goal to go down 1-2 to England for their second consecutive defeat in the FIH Hockey World Cup here on June 2. Though India were the better of the two teams, he said the reality was they are yet to open the account. “I thought both sets of guys played well. saved by goalie P.R.Sreejesh, cost them badly. It was a spirited performance by the Indians as they were determined to bounce back from the 2-3 loss to Belgium in their opening match. India started off well but England went into the lead in the 27th minute after Mark Gleghorne converted a penalty corner. But the Indians were back in the reckoning within four minutes through Dharamvir Singh, who received a pin-point pass from skipper Sardar Singh and swung around to hit it straight into the net from the top of the circle. Till the 68th minute, the Indians did well and the match looked to be heading towards a 1-1 draw. But a foul by Gurbaj Singh gave England the winner from the penalty corner and Mantell scored from the rebound after Sreejesh had put on a brilliant effort to thwart the penalty corner shot. India were the livelier going forwards but England’s defense was resolute. India always threatened to score the spectacular goal, in fact they were forced to take shots that were either wide or easy for goalkeeper George Pinner to deal with.

wo-time former champions Argentina, loaded with some of the world’s top stars, are the clear favorites in Group F while debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina will be looking to make an impact in the 2014 World Cup. But the spotlight in the group will be on the star-studded Argentina. If they have to win their third World Cup title, a lot will depend on the quartet of Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain. Coach Alejandro Sabella has
brought some stability in the side since he took over from Sergio Batista after the team’s dismal show in the Copa America in 2011. They had an easy qualifying campaign, beat Colombia at home, won both the matches against Chile and had comfortable home victories against Uruguay and Ecuador. When Sabella took over, his first task was appointing Messi as the captain. It worked wonders for the Barcelona star. Messi, who had a dry spell in 16 matches before Sabella’s appointment, found his mojo and scored 20 goals in 21 games.

The Indo-Zimbabwean fifth seeds went down 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 in two hours to top seeds Su-Wei Hsieh (Chinese Taipei) and Shuai Peng (China) on Court No.1 to end the Indian challenge in the only clay court major. Both pairs failed to hold serve at least once in the match but the top seeds were two notches better, converting three break point opportunities to Sania and Cara's one. The tables turned in the second
set as Sania and Cara came out with the only two aces and only two winners to take points at crucial junctures. In the semi-finals, the victors will take on the winners of the match between Czech-Slovenian fourth seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik and unseeded Spaniards Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro.

Zarine Khan on a look out for ‘good work’
courts tricolor controversy A
ctress Zarine Khan, who was last seen in the Hindi film Housefull 2 in 2012, says she is taking her time in selecting projects as she wants to do some good work. “I am taking my time and doing good work,” Zarine, who made her Bollywood debut with Salman Khan starrer Veer, said at the launch of designer Amy Billimoria’s collection here. “You (audience) will soon see me on the screen. You have not seen me in Hindi film for long that does not mean I am not doing any film. Recently, my Punjabi film has released, which has done good business,” she said. Zarine’s upcoming Hindi projects include The Legend of Michael Mishra and Amar Must Die.

ctress Mallika Sherawat is no stranger to controversy. And she has once again kicked up a storm by appearing in a tricolor in the poster of her new film Dirty Politics. In the poster, Mallika is seen wrapped in the tricolor and sitting atop a car with a beacon, and it hasn’t gone down well with a political party from Rajasthan. But she is not the first one to get into trouble. Back in 2000, designer Malini Ramani also

Films bind, not divide: Big B on ‘Filmistaan’ MUMBAI: Debutant director Nitin Kakkar has received wide acclaim at international film festivals for Filmistaan that explores India-Pakistan relationships. Now megastar Amitabh Bachchan too has complimented him on his endeavours. “Filmistaan...the film on release. Cinema in its bountiful glory. Just saw it...films bind, they do not divide. Love is power,” Big B posted on his Twitter page. Filmistaan, starring actors like Sharib Hashmi, Inaamul Haq, Kumud Mishra and Gopal Dutt, won the best feature film in Hindi title at the 60th National Film Awards 2012, and it also won ‘The Silver Crow Pheasant Award’ for best debut film at the International Film Festival of Kerala.

dishonored the national flag. A few years later, actress and host Mandira Bedi’s attire came under fire when she chose to wear a flag-themed sari. While hosting one of the cricket matches, Mandira was seen wearing a sari that had national flags of all the countries, which participated in the tournament. There was an image of the tricolor that was apparently positioned in a disrespectful manner — below the knee. Tennis player Sania Mirza didn’t dare to wear the tricolor, but she found herself in the flag controversy, thanks to smart photography. Mirza was pictured sitting with her bare feet that appeared to rest on a table next to an Indian flag. As many saw this as an act of showing disrespect to the Indian flag, she had even thought of giving up playing tennis to show her respect to the flag.
Chalo Dilli a fresh film altogether: Lara Dutta MUMBAI: Actress-producer Lara Dutta is excited about doing a sequel to her debut film production Chalo Dilli, but says the new project will not be a continuation of the 2011 entertainer. “The sequel to Chalo Dilli will be a fresh film altogether and not a continuation. We have different characters in that,” Lara told IANS. Chalo Dilli, directed by Shashant Shah, features Lara and Vinay Pathak in the lead. Apart from the sequel, what should one look forward to from Lara on the work front? “There are multiple things happening right now...I am very excited about Chalo Dilli sequel. It will go on floors soon. “But I can’t talk about the other projects,” said the former beauty queen.

If you happen to be one of the multitude of faceless migrants, you are in for a really grueling time. The protagonist’s journey into the heart of darkness is immediate, and irreversible. What Mehta does is to show us the fatality and finality of lives thrust into the bowels of the city. Will Kapil Sharma make a fiction show? MUMBAI: From comedy to singing, acting, producing and composing — popular stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma has done it all. But if you ask him about trying his hands at fiction, he shows no interest. However, he does not rule out making a fiction-based show or being part of this some day in the future . “I have no interest in fiction because from the beginning I have been doing live shows, performing in front of the audience,” Kapil said here at the on-location shoot of the daily soap Sasural Simar Ka. “I am not comfortable with fiction, but you never know about future,” he added.

I’d love to do sports film: Sonakshi Sinha NEW DELHI: Actress Sonakshi Sinha, mostly seen as the traditional Indian girl on the screen, will be seen as a boxer in a sequence in A.R. Murugadoss’ forthcoming directorial Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty. She says “personality wise, the role is closest to me as possible”. There are not many leading actresses in the Hindi film industry who shed their “girly” look to play a strong sportsperson on the big screen. But Sonakshi, who has also studied fashion designing, has no qualms about essaying such roles. “I was interested in it immediately because I played sports in school and college. Personality wise, the role is closest to me as possible. It was like being myself on screen and doing what I love to do,” Sonakshi told IANS here. “I would love to do a film in the future where I can explore this facet a little bit more where I can play sports probably longer,” added the actress, known for serenading the big screen in saris-backless blouse or bright colored traditional attires with her curls left loose in movies. For the scene, in which she is seen as a boxer participating in an inter-college championship, she took some training from Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh and her co-star Akshay Kumar too gave her tips to prepare for the role. “Yes, I did (take training) but I’ve always been a sportsperson,” said the 26-year-old.
MUMBAI: Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s son Kush, who has assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is set to turn a fullfledged director with an Indian televised version of Jeffrey Archer’s political bestseller First Among Equals. The rights to film of the novel were bought by producer Sheetal Talwar at a reported `150 million. The series would be one of the most lavish and expensive to be produced for Indian television. Confirming this, Kush said: “Yes, I am doing Jeffrey Archer’s First Among Equals for television. It’s a layered subject with lots of depth and complexity. The story is adaptable for Indian tastes.”
TV actress Barkha Bisht plays gangster MUMBAI: The upcoming episode of crime-based show Encounter will feature TV actress Barkha Bisht as a gangster who uses her looks to get into the crime world. Barkha will be seen playing gangster Unnati. In the episode, Unnati with the help of her lover Ulhas, essayed by TV actor Behzad Khan, makes a mark in the underworld. The love story of the duo ends when Unnati’s insecurities and betrayal lead to the encounter of Ulhas, said a statement. “I said yes to the character as soon as I read the script. I play a seductress and it was very challenging for me. It was a very exciting experience for me to shoot for the episode of Encounter. I hope my fans love my work,” said Barkha. Hosted by actor Manoj Bajpayee, the show brings stories of encounters between Mumbai police and gangsters. Himanshu Malhotra will be seen as police officer Tilak Nambiar in the show and he said that the experience was “satisfying”. “The role was pretty intense and heroic,” he said.

COURT REVERSES REWARD RULING: SHOOTING OF AUTISTIC
L Mohammad Usman Chaudhry.
BY A STAFF WRITER
OS ANGLES, CA — A lower court should not have cut a $1-million award to the family of a Pakistani-American autistic man who was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer, a federal appeals court has ruled. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals sent the case back with orders to the trial court to recalculate the award. A jury found in 2011 that former officer Joseph Cruz had used excessive force in the 2008 shooting of Mohammad Usman Chaudhry. Compensatory damages were awarded to Chaudhry’s estate for the pain and suffering he experienced between being shot and dying, with the jury finding excessive force was used and the civil rights
of Chaudhry were violated. However, a lower appeals court struck down most of the $1 million awarded to the family, leaving them with about $73,000. A police probe largely cleared Cruz after the shooting, but Chaudhry’s family said their relative was not violent and they claimed a knife was planted on his body. A trial court found that Chaudry’s civil rights had been violated by “threats, intimidation, or coercion,” as prohibited under the California Civil Code. The lower appeals court dismissed that part of the ruling, saying there was no intention to discriminate on the part of the police. The 9th Circuit found that the law “does not require proof of discriminatory intent’’ and restored the trial court’s ruling.
72-month jail for Medicare fraud BY A STAFF WRITER

ETROIT (MI) -- A Detroit area home health agency owner was sentenced to 72 months in prison for his role in the $13.8-million Medicare fraud scheme. The FBI said Zahir Yousafzai, 44, was sentenced by US District Judge Gerald E. Rosen in the Eastern District of Michigan. Yousafzai was in addition sentenced to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $4,131,135 in restitution, jointly and severally with his co-defendants. According to court records, in 2009, Yousafzai and his co-conspirators acquired beneficial ownership and control over two home health companies, First Care Home Health Care LLC and Moonlite Home Care Inc. He also assisted in the operation of two additional home health care agencies, Physicians Choice Home Health Care LLC and Quantum Home Care Inc., owned by co-conspirators. Yousafzai, a physical therapist assistant,

paid and directed payment of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and physical therapists to create fictitious patient files to document purported home health services that were never provided.
Moreover, Yousafzai paid and directed the payment of kickbacks to recruiters who obtained beneficiaries’ Medicare information that he used to submit claims for home health care that was never provided. The beneficiaries sometimes presigned forms that were later falsified to indicate they received home health services, when they did not. In other instances, the beneficiaries’ signatures were forged. Yousafzai signed patient files falsely stating that physical therapy services were provided. He incorporated a shell company known as A-1 Nursing and Rehab Inc., through which he laundered the proceeds of the health care fraud. Between July 2008 and September 2011, Medicare paid approximately $13.8 million in fraudulent home health claims submitted by the four home health agencies associated with Yousafzai. Of this amount, Medicare paid more than $4 million to First Care and Moonlite, the companies that Yousafzai owned in whole or in part.

ROOKLYN, NY- A 75-year-old Pakistani man from Brooklyn is currently on trial for beating his wife to death for preparing a vegetarian meal instead of a hearty goat dish that he was craving. Noor Hussain, 75, was so outraged over the vegetarian fare that he pummeled his wife, Nazar Hussain, 66, with a stick until she was a “bloody mess”. According to prosecutors and court papers submitted on May 21, the first day of the trial, she was covered with bruises and with severe head injuries after the 2011 incident. “The defendant brutally attacked his wife as she lay in her bed”, said Assistant District Attorney Sabeeha Madni in the Brooklyn Supreme Court. “It was a beating that was so vigorous and so repeated that it stopped her brain functions.” Defense attorney Julie Clark admitted Hussain beat his wife, but argued that he was

guilty of only manslaughter because he didn’t intend to kill her. In Pakistan, Clark said, beating one’s wife is customary. “He comes from a culture where he thinks this is appropriate conduct, where he can hit his wife ... He culturally believed he had the right to hit his wife and discipline his wife,” says Clark.

Prosecutors, however, said Hussain meant for his wife to die. “His intentions were to kill his wife,” Madni said in court. “This was not a man who was trying to discipline his wife.” Madni said that Hussain “brutally attacked his wife as she lay in her bed”, leaving deep lacerations on her head, arms and shoulders, and causing her brain to hemorrhage. He said that the man beat her with a stick that the family had found in the street and used to stir their laundry in a washtub and then tried to clean up the blood that had splattered onto their bedroom wall before calling his son for help. He also said that Pakistani women who lived in the same building as the Hussains would testify about the beatings Nazar received at the hands of her husband. “They have told us about years of abuse they witnessed,” Madni said. Hussain met his wife in Pakistan and the couple married before moving to Brooklyn.

Fishman announced. Ketankumar Maniar, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and attempted theft of trade secrets. Maniar, an Indian national, has been in custody since his June 2013 arrest. He worked as an engineer at C.R. Bard, based in Murray Hill, from 2004 to 2011, and at Becton, Dickinson and Co., based in Franklin Lakes, from 2012 to 2013. RENTON (NJ) --A New York man has admitted his role in one of the largest credit card fraud schemes ever charged by the Justice Department, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Khawaja Ikram, 41, of Staten Island, New York, pleaded guilty before US District Judge Anne E. Thompson in the Trenton federal court to information charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Two co-defendants, Tarsem Lal, 73, of Iselin, New Jersey, and Azhar Ikram, 40, of Howard Beach, New York, pleaded guilty before Judge Thompson in Trenton on April 2, 2014, to information charging them with conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Khawaja Ikram was originally charged in February 2013 as part of a conspiracy to fabricate more than 7,000 false identities to obtain tens of thousands of credit cards. Members of the conspiracy doctored credit reports to pump up the spending and borrowing power associated with the cards. They then borrowed or spent as much as they could, based on the phony credit history, but did not repay the debts—causing more than $200 million in confirmed losses to businesses and financial institutions. The scheme involved a three-step process in which the defendants would make up a false identity by creating fraudulent identification documents and a fraudulent credit profile with the major credit bureaus; pump up the credit of
the false identity by providing false information about that identity’s creditworthiness to those credit bureaus; and finally, run up large loans. The scope of the criminal fraud enterprise required Ikram and his conspirators to construct an elaborate network of false identities. Across the country, the conspirators maintained more than 1,800 “drop addresses,” including houses, apartments, and post office boxes, which they used as the mailing addresses of the false identities. Ikram admitted he helped obtain credit cards in the name of third parties—many of which were fictional—and then directed the credit cards to be mailed to addresses controlled by members of the conspiracy. He also admitted he knew the cards would be used fraudulently at businesses. The charge to which Ikram pleaded guilty carries a maximum potential penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine, or twice the gain or loss caused by the offense. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23, 2014. Azhar Ikram and Lal are scheduled to be sentenced September 17, 2014. US Attorney Fishman praised special agents of the FBI’s cyber division, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Aaron T. Ford; postal inspectors, under the direction of Postal Inspector in Charge Maria L. Kelokates; and special agents of the US Secret Service, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James Mottola, for the investigation leading to the guilty plea.
He also thanked the US Social Security Administration for its role in the investigation. The government is represented by Assistant US Attorneys Daniel V. Shapiro and Zach Intrater of the US Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Unit and Barbara Ward of the office’s Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Unit in Newark. This case was brought in coordination with President Barack Obama’s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. The task force was established to wage an aggressive, coordinated, and proactive effort to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. With more than 20 federal agencies, 94 U.S. Attorneys’ offices and state and local partners, it is the broadest coalition of law enforcement, investigatory, and regulatory agencies ever assembled to combat fraud. Since its formation, the task force has made great strides in facilitating increased investigation and prosecution of financial crimes; enhancing coordination and cooperation among federal, state, and local authorities; addressing discrimination in the lending and financial markets; and conducting outreach to the public, victims, financial institutions, and other organizations. Over the past three fiscal years, the Justice Department has filed nearly 10,000 financial fraud cases against nearly 15,000 defendants including more than 2,900 mortgage fraud defendants.

PROTEST AGAINST AKASH DALAL’S DETENTION UNITES COMMUNITY BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- A successful protest rally organized by the Support Akash Dalal Team on May 14 in front of the New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s office in Trenton, New Jersey has added a glorious chapter in the growing Indian American community. A large group of participants from various parts of the New Jersey and adjacent states under the visionary and dynamic leadership of veteran bold community leader and the president of Indo American Cultural Society, Pradip (Peter) Kothari, and young rebellion leader Ankur Vaidya was successful in uniting the Indian community, harnessing their talents, resources and energy to put up a very formidable and impressive show in the state’s capital, Trenton. Equally praiseworthy were the brave faces and participation of Dr. Adarsh Dalal and Harsha Dalal (parents of Akash Dalal), who during the entire preparation of the rally were the source of inspiration and trend-setters. All the participants and leaders wearing a special cloth cap created a superb scenario for the spectators. Many of them flocked to the rally by riding special buses from various locations or by driving themselves to show their solidarity and
demonstrate anger against the Bergen county prosecutors, Judge and police authority for keeping Akash Dalal in solitary confinement in a 6’-by- 8’ room since March 2012 without any trial or allowing reasonable bail. Akash Dalal, a very brilliant student with an incredible SAT score of 2280 from 2400(95%), 4.0 GPA in the college, Captain of School Tennis Team, 2nd prize winner in Science competition–by all standards a promising youngster–has been locked up without trial. This is, indeed, demoralizing and the
Government/Administration must start the legal proceedings immediately and provide the affordable bail amount which an average American can fulfill. A podium was set up on the footsteps of the Governor’s House. Pradip Kothari very rightly and gainfully conducted the 100 minutes of addressing by various community leaders. Most of the leaders urged the Governor to intervene in this distressed condition. The distinguished speakers included bold national leader and Chairman of Federation of
Priest convicted of sexual abuse deported to India
Leo C. Koppala

INNASOTA-A priest from Nellore Diocese (India) who was accused of sexual molestation in Blue Earth, Minn., in June 2013, was deported to India on May 14. A press release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Father Leo C. Koppala was arrested last year on June 8, and charged and convicted for second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child. The Indian priest had been serving in the Diocese of Winona at Saints Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in Blue Earth for five years. Before that, he also served at Resurrection Parish in Rochester, Minn.. Officials from ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Bloomington, Minn., escorted the disgraced Catholic priest to India on a commercial flight and handed him over to authorities in New Delhi. Koppala was arrested after relatives of a 12-year-old girl called the police when the child recounted to them how the priest had fondled her during a visit to their home on June 7. Koppala had been invited to dinner at the home of the child’s grandmother. Officers from the Blue Earth Police Department on June 8 arrested Koppala and charged him with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Two days later, on June 10, Koppala posted bail and was released from local custody. Meanwhile, Bishop John Quinn of the Diocese of Winona acted fast, placing Koppala on administrative leave in accordance with the diocesan policy for the protection of minors, a release from the Diocese’s office said. To quell fears among followers, the Diocese also said that it had not received any other complaints about Koppala of a similar nature from others in the parishes where the Indian priest had served. It also alerted the bishop of Koppala’s home diocese in Nellore. Any action to have
Koppala removed as a priest from the Catholic Church has to be effected by his diocese in India and the Vatican. Koppala was convicted on March 31 at the Faribault County District Court at Blue Earth and sentenced to 31 days, with credit for time served, and 25 years’ supervised probation. As soon as he was released from Faribault County, he was arrested by ICE officers and issued a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge. While in ICE custody, Koppala signed an agreement not to contest his deportation. A federal immigration judge ordered Koppala’s deportation on April 14. “Koppala held a position of trust in the Catholic Church and the community. He broke that trust. We sincerely hope that his permanent removal from the United States will help the healing process for the victim and the victim’s family,” Scott Baniecke, field office director for ERO, St. Paul, Minn., is quoted as saying in the press release. Following news of Koppala’s deportation, the Diocese of Winona (DOW) issued a release on May 14, saying it “has submitted a full report to the Vatican Office of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which will work directly with the Diocese of Nellore, India, in regard to Fr. Koppala’s future as a Roman Catholic priest.”

The speeches of Dr. Adarsh Dalal and Harsha Dalal--who emotionally could not speak long--were worth highlighting. Another emotional speech was by aunt of Dr. Adarsh Dalal. After the speeches, Kothari and Vaidya presented a memorandum to Governor’s representative requesting him to take quick actions to resolve this situation. The entire planning of this protest rally deserves to be commended. Transportation, food, water, sanitary needs, caps for participants, chairs for seniors, banners, etc. were very wellthought and well-carried-out. The biggest and laudable gain of this rally was the restoration of unity and harmony among all the leaders.
Indian faces trial for patricide
Jiten Patel
BY A STAFF WRITER
W
ASHINGTON, DC -- An Indian-American man is facing trial for shooting down his 62-year-old father at his home in a North Carolina city. Jiten Patel, 29, has been accused of killing his father Ashwin Patel intentionally in a drug binge in his home in Mount Holly city, a suburb of Raleigh in the US state of North Carolina in January last year. The Gaston County Court last week heard the testimony from investigators and forensic scientists who found Jiten’s DNA on the handgun that killed his father. Ashwin’s body was found in his house with several gunshot wounds. The police also noticed blood on the outside lock of the BP gas station owned by Ashwin. The police identified Jiten as a suspect in the killing and took him in custody. Jiten, a drug addict, has been charged with first-degree murder and larceny. In his defence, he contended that he acted in self-defence. According to scientists, Jiten’s clothes were stained with his father’s blood, and his shoes left bloody footprints on the carpet of the Mount Holly home. Two people also testified to be in Jiten’s company on the fateful night. The two witnesses for the prosecution said they noticed that Jiten had an injured hand that was wrapped in a towel or T-shirt.

elebrations broke out across Telangana as it came into being as the 29th state of India on June 2. ‘Jai Telangana’ rent the air as the region comprising 10 districts erupted in celebrations to mark the fulfilment of nearly 60-year-old dream of the people. Bursting of firecrackers, unfurling of the national flag, distribution of sweets and greetings marked the celebrations, which began midnight. Hundreds gathered at Gun Park near the state assembly building to pay their tributes to the martyrs of Telangana. Firecrackers, especially brought from Mumbai, were burst at several traffic junctions and the main roads in Hyderabad. Telangana protagonists took to the streets and were seen dancing to the tunes of popular Telangana song. Holding flags of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the party activists took to the streets on their motorbikes. Celebrations were held on a grand scale on Tank Bund and Necklace Road around Hussain

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) illuminated main junctions, historic monuments Charminar, Golconda Fort, legislative assembly building, state secretariat and other government buildings. Similar celebrations were held in nine other districts of Telangana. The main official ceremony will be held at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad where K. Chandrasekhara Rao, who took oath as
the first chief minister of Telangana, will unfurl the national flag and take salute at a colorful parade. Various political parties also organized Telangana formation day celebrations. Similar functions were being organized at offices of the Congress party, the Bharatiya Janata Party

What is more interesting is that you can get your name printed on this house if you donate for the over $15 million project. Swedish artist and entrepreneur Mikael Genberg has been planning to place a self-constructing house on the surface of the moon in collaboration with U.S. aerospace company Astrobotic. This sprinter robot can beat Usain Bolt! LONDON: South Korean scientists have taken inspiration from the prehistoric Velociraptor dinosaur to create one of the world’s simplest and fastest robots — the Raptor. Raptor is capable of reaching a top speed of 46 km an hour which is faster than sprinter Usain Bolt — the fastest man on earth. The Raptor robot has two legs and a mechanism that works like a tail to balance it. Developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Raptor, while running on a treadmill, can outrace six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt whose maximum speed reached 43.92 km an hour. The robot uses carbon/epoxy composite legs, which resemble the running blades used by amputees, for more durability.

Did human beings swap brains for brawn? IANS, LONDON
W
hy humans are far more intelligent than their closest living relatives like monkeys and apes may be because our ancestors swapped brains for brawn, a study has suggested. “For a long time we were confused by metabolic changes in human muscles, until we realized that what other primates have in common, in contrast to humans, is their enormous muscle strength,” explained Katarzyna Bozek from
Chinese Academy of Sciences. While the brain consumes a whopping 20 percent of the body’s total energy, metabolic changes in human muscles were paralleled by a drastic reduction in muscle strength. To gain insights into how the human brain evolved, scientists compared the metabolisms of humans and animals such as chimpanzees, mice and rhesus monkeys. They focused on how much energy each species devoted to the brain and body. They discovered that the rate of
change in the metabolism of the human prefrontal cortex was about four times faster than that of chimpanzees, and the rate of change in
the metabolism of human muscles was more than eight times faster than that of the chimpanzee, Live Science reported.

Coffee can W cheer you up
IANS, LONDON
Coffee is a great drink for the benefits it has. But excess caffeine comes with its own set of problems
hether it’s a latte on the way to work or an espresso to get through the afternoon slump, coffee has become a routine formula for several youths. However, think twice before sipping on it as it can also have some side effects. Health guidelines recommend a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine per day, but as there is caffeine in tea, chocolate and fizzy drinks as well as coffee, the intake often turns out to be more than required, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Sally Norton, consultant surgeon and weight loss expert at Spire, The Glen Hospital Bristol, weighs up the pros and cons of consuming caffeine:
PROS: It can improve sports performance: Drinking a caffeinated drink before a sport is associated with improved endurance and other sporting measures. It seems that caffeine increases heart rate but reduces the pain felt during exertion, encouraging us to push it that bit further. It can increase mental alertness: Studies performed on people in stressful conditions showed improved concentration, learning and reaction time after 200 mg caffeine. There is some evidence that it can delay onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It may reduce risk of some diseases: Drinking coffee is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. It is also associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancer. It may protect the liver: Fatty liver disease is becoming an increasing problem due to the combination of alcohol and obesity. Excess fat in the liver can cause inflammation and lead to cirrhosis. Some studies
Try navy in office to stay stylish in summer LONDON: Looking stylish and smart at work in summer can be a struggle. If you want to keep cool and be stylish, navy is the answer to your problems. Softer than black and a lot less predictable than grey, navy color for office is perfect for spring-summer as it can be paired with brighter hues like pink, red, yellow, orange, green etc. for a more season-appropriate look, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Even a navy Breton striped top will work well for the office. One can pair it with some navy cropped trousers, a pair of ballet flats and a bright tote for a look that’s smart but still stylish. Pair a floral jacket over a navy dress and heels for office meetings, or try a navy suit with a printed shirt and heels for a classic office look. So go and shop for your favorite navy pieces that are great to add style to your work wear wardrobe.
show that caffeine intake may be associated with a lower risk of fatty liver. Caffeine can cheer you up: Even just the smell of coffee can make you feel better and drinking it too is related to lower rates of depression. Not to mention the social element of relaxing with friends over a cuppa! CONS: It can be bad for your heart: Some studies show it can reduce blood flow in your coronary arteries when you need it most — during exercise, as well as cause palpitations or irregular heartbeat and may possibly increase your blood pressure over time. It disturbs your sleep: People who drink more than three cups of coffee per day are scientifically proven to have less than restful sleep. One study showed a difference of 79 minutes of sleep between drinkers of caffeinated vs decaffeinated drinks. It’s often linked with sugar: Even if we don’t add sugar to our coffee, we are often tempted to accompany it with a biscuit, cake or a breakfast muffin. In addition, there can be 11 teaspoons of sugar in some varieties. It’s bad for your mood: Caffeine increases catecholamines such as adrenaline, known as the “fight or flight” hormone. No surprise then that caffeine can make you tense and jittery in high quantities. It can impact your fertility: Drinking more than five cups of coffee a day could lower fertility. If you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s certainly worth cutting down on coffee, and once you are pregnant you’ll want to quit caffeine altogether or certainly cut back to less than 200 mg per day as it may increase the risk of birth defects or reduce fetal growth.
Hair trend 2014: Mid-length bob IANS, LONDON
T
he medium length bob is the hair cut of the season with celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Lea Seydoux, Rose Byrne and Jessica Alba wearing the look. Opt for the trend for fuss-free look. Whatever your hair type or texture, there’s a medium-length style to suit all occasions, from work to weddings. Not only is it an A-list favorite but it’s versatile and easy to style, says an expert “The midlength bob is seeing a revival of popularity this season, and is the per-
fect style for those who are trying either to grow out their hair, or opt for a longer style. It also is a subtle change for those who want to go for the chop but aren’t ready for a look that’s too dramatic,” femalefirst.co.uk quote stylist Nicola Bond as saying. “When asking your hairdresser to create this style, make sure it involves lots of layers to help encourage natural movement through the ends of the hair. Ideally, the perfect hair type for this style is fine or medium thickness hair,” added Bond. However, the trend is not great for naturally poker straight hair, or very thick hair which can create a triangular effect. If there is not a natural wave in your hair, try using a curling wand to create easy, long-lasting movement. Pippa Middleton is the latest celebrity who tried bob hair look and the hairstyle has done wonders to her.
