US GOVT IMPASSE CONTINUES The US President and Republican as well as Democratic congressional leaders have failed to make progress on how to end the partial government shutdown IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US President and Republican as well as Democratic congressional leaders have failed to make tangible progress on how to end the partial government shutdown due to Donald Trump’s demands for billions of dollars for a border wall. During the contentious meeting in the Situation Room, Trump made his case for a wall on the southwestern border and rejected Democrats’ proposals for reopening the government while the two sides ironed out their differences, the New York Times reported. Trump warned before the meeting that he will keep the government partially shut down for as long as necessary, that is, apparently, till Democrats give in to his previous demands for financing his muchtouted border wall with Mexico. At the White House meeting, Democratic leaders asked Trump to immediately reopen the portions of the government that were currently shut down, leaving the discussion about border security — the reason why Trump ostensibly called the meeting in the first place — for later. “I don’t think any particular

Trump caused global dismay: Mitt WASHINGTON: Former Republican presidential candidate and incoming Utah Senator Mitt Romney has launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump, writing in an editorial that he caused dismay around the world and had “not risen to the mantle of the office”. “It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not,” Romney wrote in Washington Post this week. “... His conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions, is evidence that the President has not risen to the mantle of the office.” Romney, who is set to be sworn into the Senate on Thursday, also said that Trump’s presidency weakened America’s influence abroad, writing that “Trump’s words and actions have caused dismay around the world”. “The world needs American leadership and it is in America’s interest to provide it.” “With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential

coming days and weeks we’ll be able to reach an agreement.” The likely incoming Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, said upon leaving the meeting that the Democratic lawmakers’ aim was

“to end the partial government shutdown tomorrow”. “Tomorrow we will bring to the floor legislation that will open up government. It will be based on actions taken by the Republican

Senate — led by Senator Mitch McConnell,” Pelosi said, making reference to a Senate bill that passed but did not include wall funding. Pelosi said that approving the Democrats’ bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security through February 8 would give lawmakers and Trump 30 additional days to negotiate regarding allocating funds for US border security without the need to keep the government partially shut down and some 800,000 of the 2.1 million federal workers idled. “We asked the president to support the bills that we support to open up government,” added Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, noting that he had asked Trump to give “one good reason” for continuing the shutdown if lawmakers were discussing border security with the expectation of finding a mutually agreeable solution. “He could not give a good answer,” Schumer said. The government has been partially shut down since December 22 after negotiations between Republican and Democratic lawmakers reached a deadlock over the President’s demand that the budget bill include more than $5 billion for construction of the wall.

leadership in qualities of character is indispensable... And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.” Trump hit back, saying: “Here we go with Mitt Romney, but so fast! Question will be, is he a Flake? I hope not,” Trump tweeted, referring to retiring Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican who criticized the President often in the last few years. “Would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a team player and win!” Trump said. —IANS

assachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, one of the most prominent faces among Democrats, announced the formation of a committee to weigh a bid for the party’s 2020 nomination for president of the United States. “America’s middle class is under attack,” she said in a video declaring her intentions. “How did we get here? Billionaires and big corporations decided they wanted more of the pie. And they enlisted politicians to cut them a fatter slice.” Warren, a 69-year-old Oklahoma native, was a professor at Harvard Law School known for her expertise in bankruptcy law when she was named in 2009 to chair a congressional panel monitoring the massive bailout of Wall Street following the financial crisis, EFE news reported. Subsequently, she helped create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau before winning election to the Senate in 2012. “No matter what our differences, most of us want the same

thing. To be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules and take care of the people we love. That’s what I’m fighting for and that’s why today I’m launching an exploratory committee for president,” Warren said in the video. The Massachusetts senator becomes the second Democrat to form an exploratory committee, joining Julian Castro, who served as housing secretary in President Barack Obama’s 2008-2016 administration. Warren took the first step toward a presidential bid two months after an attempt to put to

rest a controversy over her claim of Native American heritage appeared to backfire. Citing “family lore,” Warren has long said that her mother’s ancestors included members of the Cherokee and Delaware tribes. It became an issue during her 2012 senate campaign, when Republicans accused Warren of having identified as Native American to advance her academic career, seizing on the fact that Harvard listed her as a faculty members with Native American ancestry in a national directory of law professors in the 1990s.

Rafale slugfest in Lok Sabha The government has rejected Rahul Gandhi’s demand for JPC IANS, NEW DELHI

Modi has fled Parliament: Rahul

I

n a slugfest that marked the debate on Rafale deal in the Lok Sabha, Congress President Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the entire country is “pointing fingers” at him and demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe to bring out the “truth” but Finance Minister Arun Jaitley accused him of “inventing corruption” and rejected the demand. The House had an acrimonious discussion and witnessed a face-off between Gandhi and Jaitley, with the Congress levelling allegations of corruption which the Minister dismissed, saying “those whose hands were soaked in corruption” were trying to besmirch the image of a “clean government”. In a speech that was sought to be drowned by ruling party benches, Gandhi wanted to play a purported recording of a conversation of a Goa Minister on the issue that triggered heated exchanges between the Congress and BJP members in the Lok Sabha. Jaitley responded to Gandhi’s allegations, saying there was no corruption in the deal for acquiring fighter jets from France and accused the Congress of having a “legacy of scams” like Bofors and AgustaWestland. “And this (JPC probe) is being sought by those who represent the legacy of Bofors to indulge in

India’s second Moon mission delayed again BENGALURU: India’s second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 that was to be launched on Thursday with a lander and rover got delayed again, officials said on Thursday. “The next launch date of Chandrayaan-2 has not been confirmed yet,” a spokesman of the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told IANS here. This is the second time the space agency deferred the mission launch after it was put off first time in October for unspecified reasons. Though ISRO Chairman K. Sivan told the media here earlier that they planned to launch Chandrayaan-2 on January 3, reason for the delay has not been made public yet. “The window to launch the Moon mission for landing on its surface is, however, open till March,” Sivan told reporters earlier. The Chandrayaan-2 mission comes a decade after the maiden mission Chandrayaan-1 was launched on October 22, 2008.

another fraud. The reason is, since our hands are soaked in corruption, you are a clean government, let me invent an allegation of corruption against you. This has been the entire burden of their song. Therefore, there can be no JPC at all in this transaction.” Gandhi, who initiated a debate on the controversial deal, attacked Modi on the “process, pricing and patronage” and said “there are many holes in the Rafale story”. “I thought ‘daal me kuch kala

hai, but yahan to puri daal hi kali hai’ (I thought there was some wrongdoing, but nothing is right here). We demand JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee). It will bring out the truth. Modiji bypassed processes, contract was snatched from HAL. A JPC (probe) is needed,” he said. Gandhi was seeking to dismiss Modi’s statement in a television interview on Tuesday in which he said the allegations in the Rafale deal were not directed at him per-

sonally but was against the government. “He (Modi) was looking tired, nervous (in the interview). He said no one has pointed fingers at me, but the fact is the whole country is pointing fingers at him,” Gandhi said. Gandhi said a news report had said that in the Defence Ministry’s file notings, it had been stated that “PM Modi shouldn’t interfere in Rafale deal’s negotiation”. “Modi must also answer on

NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi kept up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “it seems he fled to Lovely Professional University (LPU) to lecture students” instead of answering questions on the Rafale deal in Parliament. Gandhi also urged the students to ask Modi the same four questions posed by him on Wednesday. “So it seems our Prime Minister has fled Parliament and his own open book Rafale exam and is instead lecturing students at Lovely University in Punjab, today. “I request the students there to, respectfully, ask him to please answer the four questions posed to him by me yesterday,” Gandhi tweeted. The Congress chief’s remarks came after Modi went on a daylong visit to Punjab, where he will inaugurate the 106th edition of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) and address its inaugural session. —IANS

India knows how to deal with terrorism: Modi IANS, NEW DELHI

rime Minister Narendra Modi has said India wants peace but also knows how to deal with terrorists in a language they understand. “Earlier the global community’s refrain was Kashmir. Now they are talking about terrorism. We in India want peace, but know how to deal with terrorism in the language they understand. Surgical strike is an example of that,” he said during his video interaction with BJP workers from five Lok Sabha constituencies of Andhra Pradesh. He said India also got support across the globe after its action against the neighboring country. Talking about India’s foreign policy, Modi said, “It is India, not me, that has emerged as a global leader. It is due to you all, the 130 crore people of India. The country’s foreign policy was based on a simple

mantra of ‘India First’,” he said. During his interaction, the Prime Minister also hit out at Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and the state’s ruling TDP and accused it of spreading tsunami of lies.

ment, if they haven’t received it then the money has gone to whose pocket? Our government is fully committed towards welfare of people of Andhra Pradesh,” he said. “People know the reality of those in power in Andhra Pradesh. They tell only lies, they are interested only in blaming and indulge only in scams,” he said. He said the people of the state

are deeply angry with the current political leadership and Andhra is looking for change. “The people have not forgotten how Congress has separated the state, but the BJP has always stood with the state,” he said. Modi urged the party workers to strengthen the party at the booth level and asked them to deepen links with the people of their booth.

MODI’S CHARISMA APPEARED TO WANE In the present political scenario, political analysts feel the BJP is unlikely to repeat its performance of 2014 BRAJENDRA NATH SINGH, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP face a tough challenge in the Lok Sabha elections in the coming summer in the wake of its defeat in the recent Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and mounting worries on the economic front. Even at the end of 2017, no one would have given the opposition a chance in the next general elections after BJP’s sweeping success in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in the wake of demonetisation and surgical strikes on terror hideouts across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and its ability to come to power in other states where it was not the largest party. However, the BJP was contained in Modi’s home state of Gujarat in the year-end Assembly elections where it was stopped short of the 100 mark, signaling the green shoots of recovery for the Congress. The change in the last one year became evident after a united Sama-

jwadi Party and Bahujan Samajwadi Party defeated the BJP in the Lok Sabha by-elections in its strong holds like Gorakhpur and Phulpur and along with the RLD, in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress worsted the BJP in parliamentary by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and in Karnataka. Also, the Congress was quick to

Lok Sabha. During the year, the BJP had lost seven out of the 13 by-elections in parliamentary constituencies. Of these, it held nine since 2014. It could retain only Palghar in Maharashtra and Shimoga in Karnataka. Since 2014, the BJP managed to retain just six Lok Sabha seats in by-polls. Besides Palghar and Shi-

The party is also facing the heat from the VHP and RSS, which have been mounting pressure on the government for constructing a Ram temple at Ayodhya. learn from BJP’s game elsewhere and surrendered the Chief Minister’s post to the JD-S in a post-poll tie up to keep the BJP out of power in Karnataka, despite the saffron party emerging the single largest in the summer of this year. The results of the recent Assembly polls in five states, where the Congress snatched power from the BJP in the Hindi heartland, has given a major boost to the opposition parties and could be a factor in the battle for control of the next

moga, it had won Lakhimpur in Assam, Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, Beed in Maharashtra and Vadodara in Gujarat. In the last four-and-half-years, the party has lost Lok Sabha by polls in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Gurdaspur in Punjab, Alwar and Ajmer in Rajasthan, Kairana, Phulpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, BhandaraGondiya in Maharashtra and Bellary and Mandya constituencies in Karnataka. The BJP’s tally in the

Lok Sabha has come down to 268 from 282 in 2014. The results of the recent Assembly polls and the by-elections may have signalled the weakening of the “Modi wave” of 2014 the road ahead may not be easy for the saffron party, given the fact that major parties like SP and BSP in Uttar Pradesh are planning an antiBJP alliance and formation of the RJD-led alliance in Bihar, the two

states which send 120 of the 543 elected MPs to the 545-member Lok Sabha, where two members are nominated. In the present political scenario, political analysts feel the BJP is unlikely to repeat its performance of 2014, especially in key states like UP as the coming together of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in UP, social equations are likely to change.

#MeToo awakening in India across the spectrum The #MeToo movement brings about a tectonic shift in a deep-rooted patriarchal mindset in India RADHIKA BHIRANI, NEW DELHI

Amid the accusingand-denying game, efforts have been stepped up to ensure sexual harassment and abuse are either kept at bay, or dealt with sternly.

I

t took a year since the #MeToo wave hit Hollywood for its tides to be felt in India across the showbiz, media, art, literature and political worlds. But it has led to a social awakening about gender dynanics and prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace. In September, former beauty queen and actress Tanushree Dutta sparked the fire when she renewed an old allegation against acting veteran Nana Patekar of harassment on the sets of a 2008 film, “Horn OK Pleasss”. Nana, has denied the allegations — as have several other popular celebrities who have been shamed. But amidst the accusing-anddenying game, efforts have been stepped up to ensure sexual harassment and abuse are either kept at bay, or dealt with sternly. Former journalist-turned politician M.J. Akbar had to put in his papers following a slew of accusations against him. Filmmaker Sajid Khan has been suspended from the Indian Film and Televi-

sion Directors Association (IFTDA) and actor Alok Nath has been expelled from the Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA). Vinta Nanda, a writerdirector who has accused Alok of sexually violating her years ago, is hopeful of positive change. “The MeToo movement has brought about a tectonic shift in a deep-rooted patriarchal mindset. It’s impact is so deep that it won’t be long before we witness our politics, our economy and justice system being readjusted to accomodate 50 per cent of the population

of the woprld, which has since forever been isolated from the mainstream for no rhyme or reason,” Nanda told IANS. IFTDA President Ashoke Pandit feels the #MeToo movement has set the tone for posterity, establishing that voice of a victim — whether a man or a woman — will go unheard. “However big you may be, but if you are a sexual abuser, you will not go scot-free. This movement was a much-needed cleansing act for all industries to make the work environment safe, especially for

the womenfolk,” Pandit told IANS. The Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act has been reinforced by organisations across the board, warning predators against inappopriate behaviour. That demand for sexual favours is rampant in the fashion world has been depicted in films freely for the past few years. But it was model Kawaljit Singh Anand’s open accusation aimed at designer Vijay Arora which opened the MeToo discussions about the harassment that models face. The MeToo wave hit the politi-

cal realm with journalist Priya Ramani’s tweet on Akbar. Ramani recounted how Akbar called her to a hotel room in Mumbai and made her uncomfortable with his behavior. A slew of women journalists came out with their horror stories involving Akbar. Industry insiders, however, seem to suggest that the movement has turned into witch hunting, pointing out that those who have been accused had just the same right to put forth their side of stories as those accusing them; that they should be given the benefit of doubt until actually proven guilty of what they have been accused of.

Mrinal Sen: Iconoclast filmmaker and humanist

Legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at the age of 95. (File Photo: IANS)

Sen was the last surviving member of the 'trinity' from Bengal who gave birth to parallel cinema in the country SIRSHENDU PANTH, KOLKATA

B

y accident, a maker of films... Good or bad, yes or no, they know me as an iconoclast," Mrinal Sen said about himself in his autobiography, giving an apt and characteristically witty description of his cinematic philosophy. Anybody who had the privilege of interacting with Sen closely, always vouched for his sense of humor and down-to-earth approach, which made him a fantastic and indefatigable conversationalist. It was perhaps this ability to effortlessly reach out to all sections of people around him that made Sen so socially aware, and consequently, he produced a large crop of serious films that challenged prevailing social sensibilities and mores, putting a mirror before the society. Sen (95), who died in Kolkata on Sunday, was the last surviving member of the 'trinity' from Bengal — including master filmmakers Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak — who gave birth to the parallel (or new wave) cinema in the country by starting and cradling the domestic film society movement in one of the coffee houses of Kolkata. The

(Photo: IANS) troika gave a new direction to the idea of filmmaking in India, with their intellect, spontaneity, knowledge of world cinema and deep understanding of the nuances of the medium that made the world look up in wonder and respect their creations. A Marxist in belief, who, however, never took the membership of any communist party in India, Sen regaled in breaking age-old stereotypes, highlighting issues such as exploitation and erosion of values. Take for instance the film Kharij (The Case is Closed), where the servant boy, a minor, working in a middle class family in Kolkata

(then called Calcutta), dies by carbon-monoxide poisoning after being made to sleep in the kitchen. Fearful of facing retribution, police case, scandal, and weighed down by guilt, the young employer and his wife go all out to please the deceased's father. The bereaved man, however, displays great dignity, and returns to his village quietly, leaving the employers morally shattered. Kharij shook the urban middle and upper classes so much that many changed their treatment of servants, particularly giving them better places to sleep. Kharij belonged to a particular

period in Sen's career, beginning from the 1970s — a time of great turmoil and political unrest in Calcutta with the Naxalite movement spewing blood on the streets — during which he made films one after the other provoking the urban society, and subtly capturing the political upheaval. Many critics have rated this particular period of Sen's career centering around the eastern metropolis as his most productive. The highlight of the genre was the trilogy — Interview (1970), Calcutta 71 (1972) and Padatik (1973). All three films are regarded

as masterpieces for their social messages and political overtones. Born on May 14, 1923, at Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), Sen made his first Bengali film Rat Bhore (The Dawn) in 1953, but it was his second directorial effort Neel Akasher Niche (Under the Blue Sky) that received acclaim in the country for its lyricism and humane qualities. His last film Aamaar Bhuvan (This, My Land) came in 2002. Sen has left behind a rich repertoire of 27 feature films, 14 shorts and four documentaries during a career spanning six decades.

n actor-writer-comedian and Quranic scholar, the multi-talented Kader Khan, who died early on Tuesday (IST) in Toronto aged 81, has left behind a vast oeuvre of work from a career spanning over four decades and will be remembered as much for his contribution to Hindu filmdom as for deciphering Islam for the laity across the religious spectrum. The sad news of Kader Khan's passing shocked the Bollywood fraternity on New Year's Day, when it broke early on Tuesday morning. He had spent nearly four months in hospital, for various old-age related ailments, including

breathing issues, and finally succumbed on December 31 evening. Born on October 22, 1937 in Kabul to a Pashtun family, Kader Khan (KK) migrated to Mumbai in 1952. It was during his college days that he developed a passion for theatre, acting and penning stories and dialogues. It was Narendra Singh Bedi, son of the legendary Rajinder Singh Bedi who gave Kader Khan the first break for writing the superhit musical Jawani Diwani (1972) starring Randhir Kapoor-Jaya Bhaduri, and since then he never looked back. Bollywood thespian, Dilip Kumar, who happened to watch one of his plays during a college day function, offered Kader Khan a role and an assignment for writing dialogues. hit musical featuring Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu in the lead roles, with Kader Khan in a character role. It was Kader Khan who inspired his friend, A. Krishnamurthi, head of Tina Films International (TFI) to venture into its first Bollywood venture, Ghar Ek Mandir (1984), a hit with a multi-star cast, and even insisted on writing the dialogues for it. Man held in US cop’s killing The suspect in police officer Ronil Singh’s killing was identified as Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 33, who came to the US illegally IANS, NEW YORK

A

man has been arrested for allegedly killing an Indian-origin police officer during a traffic stop in California’s Newman county, officials said. The suspect was identified as Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 33, who came to the US illegally and was believed to have been fleeing to Mexico, Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson told CNN. Arriaga was arrested from a home in Kern County, about 200 miles south of where the shooting occurred on Christmas night. Officer Ronil Singh, 33, pulled over the suspect and a few moments later, called out “shot fired” over the radio. Other officers found Singh shot and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the police said. Singh was a native of Fiji and joined the Newman Police Department in July 2011. That day he was “working overtime on Christmas night to provide the best for his family”, police officials said. Singh’s brother, Reggie, thanked police officers through sobs at a press conference. “Ronil Singh was my older brother. Yes, he’s not coming back, but there’s a lot of people out there that misses him,” Reggie said. Referring to the arrest, he said:

The deceased officer Ronil Singh.

“I was waiting for this to happen. I’d like to thank you working day and night to make this happen.” Talking about the suspect, Sheriff Christianson said that Arriaga was arrested twice previously for driving under the influence of alcohol and has known gang affiliation. Arriaga’s brother, Adrian Virgen, 25, and co-worker, Erik Razo Quiroz, 32, were arrested on Thursday for felony. They were

Indian commits suicide in UAE due to ‘health issues’ ABU DHABI: A 35-year-old Indian man was found hanging at his accommodation in Ras Al Khaimah city in the UAE and a suicide note found from his phone said he took the drastic step due to several health issues, authorities said. The deceased, Rinoj Raveendran, hailed from Kerala and had been working in Al Ghail industrial area as an accountant. His body was found by his roommate, the Khaleej Times reported. Prasad Sreedharan, a social worker affiliated with a medical committee constituted by the Consulate General of India in Dubai, told the daily that the note found on Raveendran’s phone stated that he took his own life due to health issues. “The deceased, who has a son studying in Kerala, left a note on his mobile phone saying no one (should) be held responsible for his

death and that he was taking the extreme step due to health issues. I don’t understand why people fail to seek help instead of ending their lives and leaving their family devastated,” said Sreedharan. “This is probably the 10th suicide of Indian nationals in Ras Al Khaimah city in three months,” he added. Raveendran’s wife, Bini Banarjee, works with a jewelry firm in Sharjah, social workers said. The police said investigations were underway to identify the reasons behind the apparent suicide and the repatriation process will be initiated shortly. —IANS

also in the country illegally. The sheriff said the two men were trying to protect Arriaga, who was trying to go to Mexico. “It was his goal to get across the border.” Detectives also arrested Arriaga’s girlfriend and another of his brothers, accusing them of helping Arriaga evade the police. They were identified as Ana Leyde Cervantes, 30, and Conrado Virgin Mendoza, 34. The suspect purchased two 12

packs of beer along with a pack of cigarettes, according to the convenience store where his picture was captured on surveillance tape. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) described him as Hispanic. “Suspect is considered armed and dangerous and may be in possession of a firearm,” the CHP said. Singh was a native of Fiji and had immigrated to America, KCRA3 reported. He was a veteran of over 7 years at the Newman

Police Department and was assigned as a canine officer. He earlier served with the Merced County Sheriff’s Department. “He was living the American Dream. He immigrated here from the Fiji Islands, just like my parents did, and was definitely enjoying the American Dream,” said Sheriff ’s Department spokesman Raj Singh. Corporal Singh is survived by his wife, Anamika, and 5-month son. “Our Newman Police family is devastated by the loss of Ronil,” said Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson. Flags at the California Capitol flew at half staff in honor of Ronil Singh. “On behalf of all Californians, I extend our condolences to Corporal Singh’s wife, young son, loved ones and colleagues. Our hearts are with the entire community of Newman and law enforcement officers who risk their lives to protect and serve the people of California,” Governor Jerry Brown said in a statement. The New York City Police Department said: “We mourn the loss of this hero and send our condolences to his friends, family and colleagues.” The Indian Officers’ Society at the NYPD tweeted that Singh was killed in the line of duty and recalled his service to the community.

Teenager wins Cornell University hackathon IANS, NEW YORK

A

n Indian-American teenager has won the inaugural “Digital Transformation Hackathon” at Cornell University for designing a device to detect the actual pain level of a patient during a diagnosis. The device designed by 17-yearold Mahum Siddiqi and her team uses neurological activity occurring in one’s brain to help doctors more efficiently determine someone’s pain levels. “It’s incredibly upsetting and problematic how hypothetical the concept of pain diagnostics is. Doctors have no way of knowing how little or how much pain someone is truly experiencing when they go in to be diagnosed,” Siddiqi said in a statement on Friday. A Class 12 student at Vestal High School in New York, Siddiqi was the only non-graduate student competing at the hackathon held earlier in December.

The device designed by Mahum Siddiqi uses neurological activity occurring in one’s brain to help doctors efficiently determine someone’s pain levels.

She and her team are now working with representatives from companies such as Microsoft She and her team won the first prize at the competition, and are now working with representatives

from companies such as Microsoft to produce a prototype of their paindetecting device, the statement added. “We need to design a system where patients are looked at as a whole, and doctors are able to know for sure, using our device/pure science, how much pain a patient is experiencing instead of just their personal description/perception of their own pain,” Siddiqi said.

Trump-Kim set to meet again

The US president receives Kim Jong-un’s letter, expects meeting in near future

Trump looks forward to meet Imran WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he “looks forward to meeting the new leadership in Pakistan” and in the same breath accused Islamabad of “housing the enemy”. Trump’s remarks came during a cabinet meeting over non-allocation of finances that led to a partial shut down of the US government, the Dawn reported on Thursday citing CNN. The US President, who in December wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan seeking assistance in achieving a negotiated settlement of the Afghan war, said he wants to

have better relations with Pakistan. “We want to have a great relationship with Pakistan, but they house the enemy, they take care of the enemy,” he said. “We just can’t do that. So, I look forward to meeting with the folks from - and the new leadership in Pakistan, we’ll be doing that in the not-too-distant future. I ended the $1.3 billion we paid, it’s like water, we just do it.” Trump has been consistently critical of Pakistan and had said the country didn’t do “a damn thing for us”. —IANS

U

S President Donald Trump said he has received a “great” letter from the top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un and expected their second meeting to take place in the “not-too-distant future.”

“I just got a great letter from Kim Jong Un,” Trump was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. “We’ll probably now have another meeting ... we’ll be setting that up in the not-too-distant future,” said Trump at the White House during a Cabinet meeting. In early December, the US President had revealed that his second meeting with Kim was likely to

SHORT TAKES

US troops to exit Syria ‘over a period’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said that the US troops would be withdrawing from Syria “over a period of time,” dismissing the previously reported four-month exit plan. “Over a period of time. I never said I’m getting out tomorrow,” Trump was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency on Wednesday. Trump dismissed a New York Times story reporting earlier that the U.S. military had been given about four months to retreat the 2,000 soldiers from the war-torn country.

The Trump administration announced on Dec. 19 that it had started returning U.S. troops home from Syria after claiming a victory in the fight against the Islamic State. U.S. media cited anonymous officials as saying that the United States was planning a “rapid” and “full” withdrawal of troops from Syria. Trump himself last week reversed the tone in a tweet, claiming that his country is “slowly” withdrawing troops from Syria. Currently, there are more than 2,000 US soldiers deployed in Syria.

Jair Bolsonaro Brazil’s new President RIO DE JANEIRO: Far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro has been sworn in as Brazil’s new President and he promised to build a “society without discrimination or division,” the media reported. The 63-year-old former army captain in his inaugural speech talked about a “national pact” to free Brazil of corruption, crime and economic mismanagement, the BBC reported this week. After being sworn in front of the Congress, Bolsonaro went on to the Planalto Palace where the outgoing President, Michel Temer, handed over the presidential sash. Speaking afterwards, he said

Brazil would “start to free itself of socialism” and “political correctness”. US President Donald Trump commended him for his speech, saying the US was “with” him. Among the foreign guests at the inauguration were US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. happen in January or February. Trump’s words came one day after Pyongyang released a series of positive signals over the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Kim said in his New Year speech the he would push forward the denuclearization and was ready to meet with Trump at any time. Kim also stressed his determina-

tion to work to build new relations with Washington on the condition that the United States takes corresponding measures. “We could be left with no choice but to seek a new way if the U.S. does not make good on its promises, misjudges our patience, while seeking to force things unilaterally and clinging to sanctions and pressure,” Kim warned.

The relations between the DPRK and the United States improved last year. The first-ever summit between Trump and Kim was held in Singapore in June. Meanwhile, differences between the two sides remained over key issues like the scale of denuclearization, US sanctions, and whether to issue a war-ending declaration.

China building naval warship for Pak IANS, BEIJING

C

hina has started building for Pakistan, its “all-weather ally”, one of its “most advanced” naval warships as part of a defense agreement to maintain a “balance of power” in the Indian Ocean, the media reported this week. The China Daily quoted China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) — one of the largest state-owned defense contractor — as saying that the construction of the ship has started in the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai and it is a version of China’s most advanced guided missile frigate, without specifying its type. The warship will be equipped with modern detection and weapon systems and will be capable of antiship, anti-submarine and air-defense operations, the CSSC said. According to the Pakistani Navy, the ship’s class is Type 054AP, which means it is based on the Type 054A of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It previously said four such ships have been ordered, according to the report. Once constructed, the warship “will be one of the largest and technologically advanced platforms of Pakistan’s Navy and strengthen the country’s capability to respond to

future challenges, maintain peace and stability and the balance of power in the Indian Ocean region”, the report said. It will also support the Pakistani Navy’s initiative of securing sea lanes for international shipping by patrolling distant waters, the CSSC said. According to the report, Type 054A was the best frigate in service with the PLA Navy. It cited military sources as saying that the ship had a fully loaded displacement of about 4,000 metric tonnes and was equipped with advanced radars and missiles. About 30 Type 054As are in service with the PLA Navy, observers said. An insider in China’s shipbuilding sector with knowledge of the

Type 054AP program told the China Daily that the ship is the largest and most powerful combat vessel China ever exported. “Based on pictures circulating on the Internet, the ship will have vertical launch cells that can fire Chinese HQ-16 air-defense missiles and other kinds of missiles. Vertical launch cells will bring flexibility to the user in terms of weapons portfolio, thus giving it a stronger fighting capability,” he said. “The Type 054AP is the best frigate Pakistan can access in the international market,” said the report, citing the insider. “The service of Type 054APs will double the combat power of the Pakistani Navy’s surface fleet,” he added.

confident India faced Australia in the fourth and final Test here on January 3, aiming to create history by registering their maiden Test series win Down Under. India were leading the four match Test rubber 2-1. India had won the first test followed by a loss in the second. In the third game, the visitor registered a morale boosting 137 runs victory. The batting department seemed settled with captain Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane among the runs along with Mayank Agarwal, who impressed in his debut Test with a half-century in the first innings, and Rishabh Pant. With the pitch here expected to assist spin, India have named Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin in their 13 player squad. 4th Test: Pujara ton boosts India on Day 1 SYDNEY: Cheteshwar Pujara came up with a typically gritty century as India posted 303/4 in their first innings at stumps on the opening day of the fourth cricket Test against Australia here on Thursday. Pujara was batting on 130 when the umpires decided to call it a day. His 250-ball stay in the middle was studded with 16 hits to the fence. Hanuma Vihari was batting on 39 at the other end. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood was the most successful bowler with figures of 2/51. Fellow pacer

Kohli also said that in the fourth match the

Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon bagged a wicket each. India are 2-1 up in the four-Test series. It was steady batting by Pujara and Mayank Agarwal which harassed the Australian bowlers and the duo were involved in a crucial 116-run partnership for the second wicket. team’s intensity won’t be lacking. “Our year ended very well and we will try to make sure that we start this year well too. We are taking this as a standalone Test, which we must play with full intensity and effort,” Kohli said. Australia who faced criticism for their batting might make a few changes. All-rounder Marnus Labuschagne was added to the squad for the last test.

Sindhu, who had lost her last two matches in the PBL against Sung Ji Hyun and Beiwen Zhang, was keen to start the year with a win and there couldn’t have been a bigger opponent across the net than Saina as the two shuttle queens of Indian badminton would have been keen to earn the bragging rights early in the year, as Sindhu finally ended the match with a 11-15, 15-9, 15-5 win. eteran cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar, who trained Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar and his friend Vinod Kambli, among others, passed away following a heart attack here on Wednesday, family sources said. He was 87. Achrekar, honored with a Padma Shri in 2010 and Dronacharya Award in 1990, was instrumental in coaching Tendulkar, Kambli and over a dozen other top cricket stars in the finer nuances of the game. “The BCCI expresses is deepest sympathy on the passing of Achrekar. Not only did he produce great cricketers but also trained them to be fine human beings. His contribution to Indian cricket has been immense,” the BCCI said in a condolence message. Born in 1932, Achrekar started playing cricket at the age of 11 and in two years was playing Club Cricket with New Hind Sports Club, Mumbai.

Subsequently, he played for Young Maharashtra XI, Mumbai Port Trust, and in 1963 led a firstclass match between SBI and Hyderabad in the Moin-uddin Dowla Tournament. Subseqeuntly, he launched his own cricket training academy, the Kamath Memorial Cricket Club (KMCC) at Shivaji Park, consid-

ered the nursery of Indian cricket. There he coached and produced some of the biggest names in Indian cricket like Tendulkar, Kambli, Ajit Agarkar, Pravin Amre, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sameer Dighe, Chandrakant Pandit and many more, who catapulted Indian cricket to new heights. Last year, on Guru Poornima Day, Tendulkar had visited his Guru and sought his blessings. “Achrekar Sir, all this is possible because of you. Without your guidance, I would not have achieved such great heights,” he said later. He also paid rich tributes to Achrekar on his retirement farewell speech in 2013 and his Guru’s contribution was duly highlighted in the biopic, “Sachin: A Million Dreams” (2017). Tendulkar also acknowledged how in his formative years, Achrekar Sir would treat him with a “Vada Paav” or “Bhel Puri” as a compliment for performing well on the fields.

Rahul emerges as effective campaigner The Congress President openly said that BJP leaders may call him ‘pappu’ but he does not hate the party PRASHANT SOOD, NEW DELHI

2

018 was a year Congress President Rahul Gandhi came into his own as a campaigner and strategist, emerging as a powerful voice in the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also earned his electoral spurs in tough Hindi heartland battles, helping his party win three states that will have ramifications in the Lok Sabha elections a few months away. Rahul Gandhi began the year as Congress President, having taken over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi last December at the culmination of party’s organizational elections. The path was full of challenges as barring Punjab and Puducherry, where it had stormed back to power as also Karnataka — where it is the junior partner in the ruling coalition — the Congress was virtually starved of electoral victories since its Lok Sabha debacle in 2014. It had also not beaten the BJP in a straight contest anywhere in four years. Gandhi went about the task methodically by identifying weaknesses and bridging gaps. He sought to beat Modi at his own game by expanding social media outreach and connecting with the audiences through witty, hard-hitting tweets

2018 was a year Rahul Gandhi came into his own.

and posts. Gandhi consistently attacked Modi on issues linked to the common man — corruption, unemployment, farmers distress, demonetization, price rise — and stepped up his efforts to portray the BJP leader as a “friend of the rich”. He attacked the BJP on national security -- a key plank of the ruling party — highlighting how the government had been “silent” on the Chinese build up near the Doklam

site and its “failure” over the continued infiltration from Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. Gandhi sought to demolish the perception that Modi was “personally incorruptible” by taking repeated jibes at him over the Rafale fighter jet deal with France. He singlehandedly made Rafale deal a national issue through press conferences, tweets and speeches and attacked Modi with “chowkidar is chor” (the

guard is the thief) barb. He traveled abroad to counter Modi’s outreach among the diaspora. Gandhi’s consistent articulation of issues, including job losses caused by demonetization and the slowing down of economy due to “flawed implementation” of the Goods and Services Tax, seemingly put the government on the defensive. The GST, which was simplified in the run-up to the Gujarat assembly

polls last year, has been further eased after the BJP lost power in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Gandhi aggressively clamored for farm loan waivers and several state governments are likely to opt for the measure before the 2019 general elections. Gandhi had been attacking Modi earlier too but his elevation as party chief sharpened his attacks. Simultaneously, he addressed organizational issues, effecting changes in his team at the All India Congress Committee to create a combination of experience and youth. Gandhi also reached out to people directly through the social media. He also openly said that BJP leaders may call him “pappu” but he does not hate the party. But the challenges that remain for him are herculean. The Congress lost six assembly elections this year — Telangana, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland — despite the three wins in Hindi heartland and managing to be a partner of the ruling coalition in Karnataka. It is not in power in any state in the northeast, a party stronghold only four years ago. It is weak in the crucial states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and needs allies to win seats.

rise in global protectionist measures, along with high crude oil prices, knocked out the Indian rupee in 2018, relegating it as the worst performing Asian currency of the year. Additionally, fears over widening of the current account deficit, uncertainty due to state elections, banking sector woes and the currency contagion among emerging markets greatly weakened the Indian rupee. However, some improvement in global risk sentiments and a sharp plunge in oil prices helped the rupee recover from its recent low levels. rotests erupted across Kerala on Wednesday after two women in the hitherto banned age group entered the Sabarimala temple before dawn, with the Sabarimala Karma Samithi (SMS) calling for a state-wide shutdown on Thursday. The temple was shut for an hour to conduct “purification rituals” after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed that Bindu and Kanaka Durga had ‘darshan’ at 3.30 a.m., having been stopped on December 24 by predominantly male pilgrims from entering the hill shrine. The temple was reopened after an hour. SKS activists vowed not to rest till Vijayan was ousted from office and called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown on Thursday. Speaking to the media over tele-

Speaker suspends 24 AIADMK MPs NEW DELHI: Twenty four Lok Sabha members belonging to AIADMK were on Wednesday suspended for five consecutive sittings by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for their “unruly behavior”. The AIADMK members were protesting against the proposal for a dam across Cauvery river in Karnataka. When the House was to take up a discussion on the Rafale deal in the post lunch session, the AIADMK members trooped near the Speaker’s podium and started sloganeering. Within seconds, some of the protesting members tore some papers and threw these towards the Chair. Mahajan warned the members that she will name them. Protests were also reported from Kochi, Palghat, Kozhikode and Kasargode. Kerala’s biggest traders’ body, KVVES, announced it won’t shut shops on Thursday as frequent strikes were causing huge losses. Once it became known that the two women had entered the temple, the chief priest and temple tantri met the Pandalam Royal family and decided to shut the shrine for “purification rituals”. Women and girls in the age group of 10 to 50 are barred from praying at the Sabarimala temple. This ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in September. Industries Minister E.P. Naidu told reporters that Modi should spell out what was the growth rate achieved by the country under his rule and what the country gained from steps like

demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST). The TDP chief was reacting to remarks made by Modi in an interview that Grand Alliance had failed and that Naidu was venting his ire over his crushing defeat in recent Assembly elections in Telangana. Naidu alleged that the country’s economy collapsed due to the steps taken by Modi. He said the Prime Minister created fear among people and misused the institutions to target his political rivals. He alleged that the economic and administrative policies of the

Centre caused immense damage to the country. He did not agree that the Grand Alliance had failed and remarked that instead, the NDA government and Modi had failed.

Journalists attacked by Sangh Parivar Thiruvananthapuram: Around 100 media personnel, including women, have been attacked in Kerala in the last two days since protests erupted after two women prayed at the Sabarimala temple, a journalist leader said on Thursday, blaming the Sangh Parivar activists for the mayhem. The dawn-to-dusk Kerala shutdown called by the Sabarimala Karma Samithi (SKS) and backed by BJP and RSS on Thursday saw many protesters turning their ire on journalists. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the violence. “This will be seriously dealt with,” Vijayan told the media here. —IANS

The Andhra CM claimed that Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were promoting Federal Front mooted by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao to divide the opposition. He said though the Trinamool Congress and the Biju Janta Dal did not say that they were joining Federal Front, Jaitley tried to mislead people. Naidu asked why Modi was happy over the victory of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana. He said the PM, BJP President Modi, 13 Central ministers and three chief ministers campaigned for BJP in Telangana but it got only one seat. Recalling that the TRS chief had called Modi a “fascist”, Naidu said the Prime Minister’s silence over this was itself a proof that they have secret understanding.

Thousands form ‘women’s wall’ in Kerala for equality IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

A

620-km long “women’s wall” that had the backing of the Kerala government was formed on Tuesday evening linking Kasargode in the north to Ayyanakali square near the Governor’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram, with lakhs taking part. So massive was the response to the women’s chain that at some places two separate “walls” were formed to accommodate everyone. Giving full support to the event was the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) which had vowed to gather five million women for the event.

Women from all walks of life stood on the side of the National Highway that runs from Kasargode to Thiruvananthapuram and

took a pledge at 4 a.m. After standing for 15 minutes, the women dispersed. Last month, amid the row over

the Sabarimala pilgrimage, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sent out invites to social groups and it was decided to form the “women wall” so that Kerala does not become “a lunatic asylum”. The other objective of the event was to promote gender equality. At the northern end, the first on the line was Health Minister K.K. Shailaja. At the extreme south was CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat. Standing besides Karat were the wives of CPI-M leaders Kamala Vijayan (Pinarayi Vijayan), Vinodhini Balakrishnan (CPI-M state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan) and Vasumathi Achuthanandan (former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan).

ational Award winning actor Anupam Kher, who essays the character of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in “The Accidental Prime Minister”, says cinema and politics cannot be separated since one reflects the other. The film, even before its release, has grabbed a lot of eyeballs and faced criticism for the projection of its central character and for being timed to hit the screens before the 2019 general elections. Anupam told IANS: “Look, when the audience is going to the theatre to watch a film, they are regular cine-goers and movie lovers. They are not entering the hall as a voter. “But yes, when they come out, the film might linger in their mind. But then, cinema and politics cannot be separated, because

Daggubati to play a ‘threat’ in ‘Housefull 4’ New Delhi: Screenwriter-director Farhad Samji has revealed that the “Baahubali” star Rana Daggubati will play a threat in their Rana Daggubati upcoming film “Housefull 4”. Rana had replaced Nana Patekar in the film after the veteran actor was accused of sexual misconduct by actress Tanushree Dutta. Rana started shooting for it in Mumbai in November. “I think it is too early to talk about his role. It’s an important role. He is playing the threat in the film,” Farhad told IANS in a telephonic interview about the movie. Rana is not the only replacement in the film. In October, filmmaker Sajid Khan had to step down as its director after he was accused of sexual harassment. “It would have been difficult for me had I not written the screenplay and dialogues of the film. Whenever I narrate, I do it like a stand-up act. All the actors... even producers make it a point that I am present on sets. I was in Jaisalmer while the shooting was happening there. But “Housefull 3” was co-directed by Sajid Samji and Farhad. “It is in the most important stage — the concept. That’s getting bounced. We are wondering whether to do this or that,” he added. — IANS

Does the film intend to influence the voters to form an opinion on the Congress party by showing Singh in a critical light? “It is ridiculous to say that people choose a political party and a change happened in the government because of Sanjay Baru's book! Similarly, it would be silly to say that this film will change the result of the election this year,” replied the 63-year-old actor. Commenting on the party president and PM conflict, Kher added: “It was never a secret. It was rather an open secret that has come out. The multiple National awardwinning actor has often used social media and public platforms to criticise Modi and the BJP, especially on issues like intolerance and vigilante attacks. He has not indicated from where he will contest. In November, he had posted a

‘Simmba’: Ranveer roars in masala entertainer

C

ritical opinion on a Rohit Shetty film may vary wildly, simply because it is a masala entertainer where one expects the magic on screen, the magic of entertainment, albeit, sans rationality, and that is where the opinions differ. Some may find “Simmba” silly to a point but overall, most would agree that this film is pretty good, artistic and a bonafide comedic masterwork; produced as a matter of form but not-without-its-innovations and pleasures. The film is about a cocky, orphan Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh) from Shivgad, who grows up to be a corrupt police officer. It is his journey from being a bad man-of-thelaw to a good one. Picking up nuggets from real life events, the film mirrors society. If the first half is light and frothy that

evokes constant laughter, the second half is equally intense and serious. It delivers middle-class life lessons in a blatantly effective manner. What really engages you in this over-stretched film are Rohit Shetty’s characteristic melodrama and over-the-top comedy, fast-paced

action sequences, witty dialogues replete with puns and spontaneous performances by its ace cast. Ranveer Singh as Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba is the lifeline of the film. He is charismatic and charming as he forges new relationships or draws horns with the antag-

onist Dhruva Ranade (Sonu Sood). Sonu Sood as Dhruva Ranade is formidable. He has his moments when he shines but is not outstanding. With a miniscule role as Simmba’s love interest, Sara Ali Khan is lost in the narrative. The script loosely adapted from the Telugu film “Temper”, is actually a spin-off of Shetty’s previous franchise, “Singham”. But overall, “Simmba” shines and the film is worth your ticket price. — Troy Ribeiro

Chef Dominic Sarkar

BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA— Two suspects were arrested December 18th and charged with the murder of prominent Indian American chef Dominic Sarkar, who was found dead in his Fremont, California home last October. According to charging documents released December 20th by the Alameda County District Attorney’s office, Maria Moore, 50, believed to be Sarkar’s paramour, hired Marvel Salvant, 46, to kill the chef for his two life insurance policies worth $800,000. Moore and Salvant were booked into Santa Rita jail.. Both suspects have been charged with three felony counts of murder, murder for financial gain, and lying in wait. Moore is identified as Asian Indian in her booking document; Salvant is identified as Black. Sarkar was shot to death on October 8th at about 12:30 a.m., while sleeping in his Fremont home. According to charging documents, in April of 2016, Sarkar and Moore purchased a $500,000 life insurance policy, listing Moore as the primary beneficiary, and two of Sarkar’s three daughters as contingent beneficiaries. Moore was listed as Sarkar’s domestic partner on the policy. She later told police that she had “an occasional sexual relationship” with Sarkar. In September of 2016, the life insurance policy was changed to remove Sarkar’s daughters. Moore’s son was listed as the lone contingent beneficiary, and Moore remained the primary beneficiary. In 2017, Sarkar purchased another life insurance policy for $300,000, listing one of his daughters as the primary beneficiary and the two others as contingent beneficiaries. That policy was also later changed to list Moore as the primary beneficiary, removing the daughters. Before the murder, Salvant allegedly cased Sarkar’s home early morning October 1st and 2nd. On the morning of the murder, Salvant sent a message to Moore, saying, “I am set to do everything tonight.” Moore had earlier paid Salvant $500, and offered him a share of the life insurance policies’ proceeds, according to charging documents. After Sarkar was found shot multiple times in his bedroom, Salvant, a twotime convicted felon who lives near Sacramento, California, told friends and associates that he was going to be coming into a large sum of money very soon. The pair were arrested December 18th in Redwood City. Both repeatedly lied to investigators, according to charging documents.

Early Voting Start Date: To Be Determined BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners anticipates that Early Voting is not likely to start on Jan. 17, 2019, which is 40 days before Election Day. The number of candidate objections is average, but the newer law that provides the 40-day schedule for Early Voting is not workable. The Board will announce a start date as soon as the ballot is settled. If Early Voting is delayed, voters who arrive at the Loop Super Site for Early Voting at 175 W. Washington on Jan. 17 will receive Vote By Mail applications or have the option to return at a later date. The delay is likely to affect only the start

C

of Early Voting at the Loop Super Site. The traditional Early Voting program – with locations in all 50 wards – will begin Feb. 11 using the standard schedule of 15 days before Election Day. The newer 40-day schedule proved unworkable before the March 2016 Primary and again, ahead of the March 2018 Primary. Both times, Early Voting began after the

scheduled start date in many Northern Illinois jurisdictions. Prior to 2016, Early Voting began 15 days before Election Day. Historically, more than 60% of all Early Voting ballots have been cast in the final week of Early Voting, whether the schedule was 15 days or 40 days. Candidate “punch numbers” coming Jan. 4 The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners plans to release candidate “punch numbers” on or about Jan. 4 for the Municipal Election. After the “punch numbers” are released, the numbers will remain unchanged even in contests where candidates withdraw or are removed from the ballot. The same punch numbers also will be used in any run-off elections, where needed.

Hindus Urge Marvel & DC Not to Trivialize Hindu Gods in Comics BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY— Hindus are urging top comics publishing companies— Marvel & DC Comics— not to trivialize highly revered Hindu gods and goddesses in their comics, calling it highly inappropriate. Various Hindu deities— Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Rama, Kali, Skanda, etc.— have reportedly made appearances as characters in Marvel and DC in the past. Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Hindu gods and goddesses were divine and comics publishers were welcome to create projects about/around them showing their true depiction as mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. Reimagining Hindu deities/

N

concepts/scriptures for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the feelings of devotees. Rajan Zed urged Marvel, DC, and other comics publishers to seriously look into this issue in future planning.

Zed stated that Comics publishers should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects. Comics, being a powerful medium, leaves a lasting impact on the unsuspecting minds of highly impressionable children, teens, and other young people, Zed indicated.

BY A STAFF WRITER OLLIENVILLE, TN- Three Indian teenaged siblings were among four people killed when the house of the family that was hosting them for Christmas celebrations at Collierville, Tennessee, caught fire, according to multiple reports. Sathwika Naik, 16; her sister Jaya Naik, 14; and brother Suhan Naik, 15, from Telangana’s Nalgonda district, were killed in the fire Dec. 23 along with their hostess, Kari Coudriet, 46. Seven others, including Coudriet ’s widower, Danny, and their son, Cole, 13, were hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation, the reports said. The USA Today reported that the Naik teens were missionaries in partnership with the Collierville Bible Church and were studying at a school in Mississippi. It added the Coudriets invited them to stay in their home when the school closed

C

for winter break and the three could not go home to India. The father of the three, Srinivas Naik, a pastor, had returned to Nalgonda last year after working in the U.S. The children had stayed back to continue their studies at Mississippi’s French Camp Academy. In a statement, the CBC identified the three teenagers as Sharron, Joy and Aaron Naik. A neighbor rushed to the scene and tried to go up to the second story with a ladder to rescue those trapped in the two-story house after Danny pleaded for help, the Times reported. As per report that the investigators were still probing how the house caught fire. The fire took 20-30 minutes to be brought under control. A GoFundMe account has been set up to give financial support to the family members following deadly fire.

Touch-A-Life Foundation Raises Funds for Bay Area Homeless Students BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA— Touch-ALife, a non-profit organization that supports homeless students across the San Francisco Bay Area, raised $25,000 at its second annual fundraiser gala at the Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino, CA. Backpacks, clothing, sanitation kits, shoes, and school supplies are provided to students in need through the McKinney-Vento/Foster Care program liaisons at various local school districts currently in the area. At the banquet, the organization recognized ‘Touch-A-Life 2018 Heroes,’ who provided inspiration for giving back, provided updates on the year’s annual activities and shared their plans for 2019. The event also featured an entertaining youth talent competition. In 2018, the foundation launched a TouchA-Life mobile app, for both iOS and Android, and at the event, demonstrated the prototype of the social networking app designed to fight homelessness across the world connecting students, schools and donors. Trisha Gundavelli, the co-founder and

BY A STAFF WRITER ILPITAS, CA- The Sankara Eye Foundation Dec. 8 held its annual banquet at the Milpitas, Calif.based India Community Center in which it raised more than a half million dollars. This year, the goal was to raise $500,000 for eye surgeries and for its three inflight hospital projects – Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Hyderabad in Telangana and New Mumbai in Maharashtra. Courtesy of the generosity of its donors, SEF was able to surpass that target, a foundation release said. Dr. R. V. ‘Moderate drinking not harmful’

LONDON: While loss of a loved one or breakdown of a relationship is often linked to a “broken heart”, not much is known why such emotional trauma could make someone physically ill. New research suggests that the body’s own immune response could play a key role in the condition. Symptoms of broken heart syndrome include shortness of breath and chest pain and as such it is often mistaken for a heart attack. However, unlike in a heart attack, patients do not suffer from a blockage of the arteries that supply the heart with blood. The cause of broken heart syndrome is not clearly understood but often is a result of intense emotional or physical trauma, which is thought to induce a strong response that affects the heart tissue. “We found that broken heart syndrome triggers a storm in the immune system which results in acute inflammation in the heart muscle. The heart muscle then spills inflammatory signals that are circulating throughout the body,” said lead researcher Dana Dawson, Professor at University of Aberdeen in Scotland. There is currently no treatment for broken heart syndrome, or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. The new study, published in the journal Circulation, suggests that

Here’s how to revamp your closet in 2019 IANS, NEW DELHI

T NEW YORK: Elderly people above 65 who are newly diagnosed with heart failure can continue moderate alcohol drinking without worsening their condition, a new study suggests. The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, showed an association between moderate drinking — seven or fewer drinks per week — and an extended survival of just over one year compared with those who abstained from alcohol. However, the findings do not suggest that non-drinkers should start imbibing this after a heart failure diagnosis. —IANS

drugs that target inflammation could offer hope of fixing broken hearts. In the study, 55 patients with acute Takotsubo cardiomyopathy were recruited from five Scottish cardiac centers. Using sophisticated MRI techniques, the researchers found that the inflammatory immune response in the hearts of those with broken heart syndrome was heightened compared to healthy volunteers. This study also showed that signs of inflammation were still found five months later, albeit at a much lesser level. “Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a serious stress-induced condition which affects mainly women and can cause long-lasting damage and scarring to the heart muscle. Surprisingly, there are still large gaps in our knowledge of its underlying biology,” said Professor Metin Avkiran, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation which funded the study. “The discovery that it is accompanied by inflammation within the heart and in the rest of the body is an important step forward,” Avkiran said. “We now need further research to understand if inflammation causes Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and determine if drugs that target inflammation could be the key to fixing broken hearts,” Avkiran said. —IANS

he year 2019 will be a season of contrasts as all the previous fashion rules will be broken. Untraditional aesthetics will take the spotlight, menswear and womens wear will shift through global cultures and comfort will be the key. Harkirat Singh, Managing Director, Woodland; Ankita Bajaj Shankar, Marketing Lead, VANS India; and Keshav Kalra, designer and CEO, The Monk list some ways to revamp your closet in the coming year. Untraditional aesthetics: Following are some of the untraditional aesthetic trends that would be the talk of the town for the coming year. Like heat lock apparels which are lightweight fabrics with micro fiber to regulate the body temperature. Aqua sorb apparels which block rain & snow and allow vapors to dry the heat.

Fashion designer Neeta Lulla in an ‘oversized’ outfit. (Photo: IAANS)

Upcoming trends: This year, oversized, unstructured outerwear will rule the trend. From classic and fitted to unstructured and modern, tracksuits will become a major fashion staple. The trousers will become baggier as hemlines will get wider. This season’s twist comes in the pastel pile-up head-to-toe in

layers and tiers upon tiers of same shade. Be it apparels, shoes or bags, this trend will work well in all cases. In accessories, statement belts will be seen everywhere. Say hi to big sunnies: The eyewear trend that is bound to transform your entire look is big sunnies in edgy colours! The narrow sunglass-

es have stayed in vogue massively this year and 2019 will witness a stylish comeback of large glares. The oversized sunglasses are designed to accentuate any look and never go out of style in the age of ever-changing trends. Get your hands on the trendsetting sunglasses to be an ultimate head-turner wherever you go. Meet minimalistic: The perfect companion in 2019 for any occasion would be the all-time favorite - minimalistic glasses owing to their versatility and charming appeal. So wait no more! Bid adieu to your mundane shades and let your eyes do the talking with ‘barely-there’ shades. White sneakers: White men’s trainers are a must if you want to wear something sporty yet trendy. One could argue that they get dirty but they go with everything and the color gives us the option to play with it when you play with winter layering.
