Subsequently, Warner and Smith were also banned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the upcoming edition of the Twenty20 cash-rich franchise-based meet. According to a CA statement, Smith and Bancroft were also banned from leadership positions for 12 months after completing their one-year ban from international and domestic cricket. Warner has, however, been banned from all leadership positions in Australian cricket for life. The players were found to have breached article 2.3.5 of the CA Code of Conduct, which relates to conduct at any time that is contrary to the spirit of the game, unbecoming of a representative,

US-CHINA IN TRADE WAR Hope for fruitful outcome from trade talks with China, says US official IANS, WASHINGTON/BEIJING
U
S Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer has said that “there’s hope” that trade talks between the US and China could lead to a fruitful outcome. In an interview with CNBC, Lighthizer said the the USTR’s Office would announce a list of Chinese goods subject to potential tariffs “before very long”, based on the so-called Section 301 investigation against alleged Chinese technology transfer practices, Xinhua news agency reported. “Then we’ll go through a 60-day period where we’ll give the public a chance to comment on the good and the bad things in there,” he said, signaling that President Donald Trump’s administration was unlikely to impose tariffs on Chinese goods until early June. Trump last week signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs on up to $60 billion of imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investment in the US.

Asked on CNBC whether US negotiations with China could lead to the avoidance of tariffs or a fruitful outcome similar to the recent trade deal between the US and South Korea, Lighthizer said: “I think there is hope”. While the US and China have two “very different” economic systems, Lighthizer said “it’s very pos-
sible” that the US-China trade relationship could end up in “a good place” after overcoming “a series of difficulties” over many years. Business groups from China and the US have warned the Trump administration not to move forward with its tariff plan as it would raise the costs for American con-
sumers and companies as well as having a negative impact on the financial markets. Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its position on recent US trade moves, saying that China will fight to the end in any trade war. Hua Chunying said at that China urges the US to make cautious decisions. Despite strong warnings from business groups and trade experts, US President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs on up to $60 billion on imports from China, and restrictions on Chinese investment in the US. A White House trade adviser told reporters that retaliation could be difficult for China. In response, Hua said these remarks miscalculated the situation, underestimated China’s resolve and capability to defend its own legitimate rights and interests, as well as the price the United States has to pay for its recklessness and willfulness. Hua said that the US imported
low-cost, labor-intensive products from China in large quantities, which considerably lowered the consumption costs for the US consumers, increased consumers’ surplus. This in fact improved consumers’ welfare and also helped the US to curb inflation in the larger sense. As such, the US has benefited greatly from trade with China both at the micro and macro level, Hua said, adding that the US’ persistence in advancing the Section 301 investigation and publishing the so-called findings to pick a trade war will undoubtedly undermine the interests of the US consumers, enterprises and financial market directly. Noting that the US stocks ended sharply lower, Hua said it was a vote of no confidence to relevant wrong policies and moves of the US side by the financial market. Maintaining sound and steady China-US economic and trade relations will be conducive to upholding global economic stability and normal international trade order, she said.
Trump’s approval rating Most transgenders banned from military highest in 11 months: Poll IANS, WASHINGTON
U
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump’s approval rating has rebounded to its highest level since the 100-day mark of his presidency, even as his approval ratings for handling major issues remain largely negative, according to a new CNN poll. Overall, 42 per cent approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency, 54 per cent disapprove, the poll revealed. Approval is up seven points overall since February, including six point increases among Republicans (from 80 to 86 per cent now) and independents (from 35 to 41 per cent now). However, Trump’s approval rating still remains below that of all of his modern-era predecessors at this stage in their first term after being elected, though Trump only trails Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama by a narrow four points at this point in their first terms. Trump’s approval ratings have seesawed over the last four CNN polls — from 35 per cent in December up to 40 per cent in January, down to 35 per cent in February and back up to 42 per cent now.
US President Donald Trump.
Looking at intensity of approval, however, the share who strongly approve of Trump’s performance (28 per cent in the new poll) and strongly disapprove (46 per cent) have held relatively steady over a similar time frame. The President’s strongest approval ratings on the issues come on the economy, the only issue tested where his reviews tilt more positive than negative: 48 per cent approve and 45 per cent disapprove. On trade generally, 38 per cent approve of the President’s work while 50 per cent disapprove. The CNN poll also found that 47 per cent believe the President has been too easy on Russia so far.
S President Donald Trump has moved ahead with his plan to ban most transgenders from serving in the military, with limited exceptions, following up on a proposal he called for last year. The White House issued a memorandum on policies determined by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, stating that transgenders were “disqualified from military service except under limited circumstances”, The Hill magazine reported. The memorandum, filed in the US District Court in Seattle, stated that “transgender persons with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria — individuals who the policies state may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery — are disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances”. According to a Pentagon memo about the policy, exceptions to the ban included people who have been “stable for 36 consecutive months in their biological sex prior to accession”, servicemembers who “do not require a change of gender” and troops who started serving under the Obama administration’s policy prior to the new memo. Mattis will have some leeway in
implementing the policy, the memo stated, as will Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen when it comes to the Coast Guard. The two top officials “may exercise their authority to implement any appropriate policies concerning military service by transgender individuals”, it said. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi condemned the Trump administration’s move as “cowardly” and “disgusting”. “This latest memorandum is the same cowardly, disgusting ban the President announced last summer. No one with the strength and bravery to serve in the US military should be turned away because of who they are,” Pelosi said.
LGBT advocates also denounced the move. “There is simply no way to spin it, the Trump-Pence Administration is going all in on its discriminatory, unconstitutional and despicable ban on transgender troops,” Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin said. “The Trump-Pence administration’s continued insistence on targeting our military families for discrimination is appalling, reckless and unpatriotic,” said American Military Partner Association president Ashley Broadway-Mack. Trump first called for a ban on transgender troops last year and followed up by issuing a memo banning transgender people from enlisting.

Banerjee, who has had a long innings in the Lok Sabha, visited Parliament house and also met leaders of other parties including Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha and Lalu Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti. MPs from Biju Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and DMK also met Banerjee. LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday indicated that her party might align with Samajwadi Party (SP) in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after the one-time bitter rivals helped defeat the BJP in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary bypolls. According the official sources, the four-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister told party legislators that such an alliance was necessary to “rout the common and bigger adversary, the Bharatiya Janata Party”. She also warned party members not to get carried away by the propaganda unleashed by the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
for Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party coming together in Uttar Pradesh and favored the strongest party in each state taking the lead in taking on the BJP. “We want to work together. We do not want anyone should be isolated. Everyone should work together. The party that is strong, it should do it (take the lead). If Mayawatiji and Akhilesh are strong in UP, they should work together. We should help them,” she said. Referring to parties like the DMK, TDP and TRS led by Telangana Chief Minister Rao, Lalu Prasad’s RJD in Bihar and Naveen Patnaik in Odisha, she said each party has to be helped to get together against BJP. “We should find such a mechanism that it is one is to one (fight),” she said and added that Pawar was also of the same opinion.
AI divestment process: Govt to off-load 76% stake IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he divestment process of the flag carrier Air India (AI) took-off, after the government invited “Expression of Interest” to off-load 76 percent stake and management control of the airline. The Preliminary Information Memorandum (PIM) inviting “EoI” for the strategic divestment of AI, along with the airline’s shares in AIXL (Air India Express) and AISATS (Air India SATS Air-
port Services) from private entities including the airline’s employees was issued on Wednesday.
The federal government owns 100 percent equity of Air India. In turn, the airline holds full stake in
Air India Express, while it holds 50 percent stake in the joint venture AISATS. Accordingly, it has been planned to divest 76 percent government stake in AI, 100 percent in AIXL and 50 percent in AISATS. “The Government of India has given ‘in-principle’ approval for the strategic disinvestment of AI by way of the transfer of management control and sale of 76 percent equity share capital of AI held by GOI,” said the PIM document
Lalu Prasad sentenced to 14 Congress slams govt over Doklam border row years jail in fourth fodder scam IANS, NEW DELHI
RANCHI: Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad will be jailed for 14 years in the fourth fodder scam case he has been convicted in, with a special CBI court here on Saturday sentencing him to seven years each in two cases under it, and ordering the sentences run consecutively. Pronouncing the sentence, CBI judge Shivpal Singh sentenced the Rashtriya Janatya Dal (RJD) supremo to seven years rigorous imprisonment on the various sections of the Indian Penal Code he has been charged under and levied a fine of Rs 3 million, which if unpaid, would entail a further year’s simple imprisonment. The party also sought a reply from Prime Minister Modi and Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the backdrop of the Chinese military reportedly moving closer to the “Chicken’s Neck” — the Siliguri corridor that connects India’s north-eastern states with the rest of the country — through Doklam by building a new road. It said India was increasingly facing Chinese moves to intrude into the Chicken’s Neck, but the “clueless Modi government has been

the Doklam border row, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he hoped the “56 inch strongman has a plan” to deal with the matter. “‘India should have learnt lessons from Doklam’, says China,” Gandhi tweeted.

n indication as to how difficult it is going to be for the opposition at the national level to get its act together was available after K. Chandrashekar Rao met Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata to lay the foundation for a federal front. But, even before the proposed alliance could get off the ground, the differences about its framework were visible. While the Telangana Chief Minister wanted it to be a non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), non-Congress group, his West Bengal counterpart kept her options open to include the Congress. A feature of these alliances is that each of their constituents is guided by the ground realities in their own states which may be at variance with the political condition in some other state. For instance, the Congress may be a more formidable adversary for Chandrashekhar Rao in his state, but it isn't so for Mamata Banerjee. So, while the Telangana Chief Minister wants to keep the 133-year-old Grand Old Party at arm's length, Mamata

Banerjee, a former Congress person, is more accommodative. Similar conflicting perceptions are known even within one party such as the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) where the Kerala comrades are against any proximity to the Congress, obviously because the latter is a force to reckon with in the southern state,
but the Marxists in West Bengal are keen on a tie-up with the Congress against the BJP since they no longer face any major threat from their old opponent in the state. The BJP's current vulnerability is obvious to its political enemies. At the same time, the non-BJP parties know that none of them is capable on its own of offering a serious chal-
sures up to the popular image of a Prime Minister who is sober, sophisticated, well-educated, widely respected, trustworthy and unbiased with a clearly identifiable vision. To start with, Sharad Pawar, who is among those who have shown an interest in leading the charge against the BJP, there has been a question mark over his reliability ever since his party was seemingly regarded by the BJP as a prop against the Shiv Sena's machinations in Maharashtra. His age (78) is also against him. India appears to be coming around to accepting

But while the Congress president is still considered not "grown-up" enough, the West Bengal Chief Minister is too immersed in her own province to be seen as a national leader. Sonia Gandhi (72), engaged in dinner diplomacy to cobble together an anti-BJP formation, is possibly the only one with a much wider acceptability in the non-BJP camp than anyone else. She, in a way, offers the best of a bad bargain with the resultant turmoil proving to be one of the worst in recent years.
Why India’s first Paralympic gold medalist is happy now Setting a world record in freestyle swimming, Murlikant Petkar became India’s first Paralympic gold medalist MOHD ASIM KHAN, NEW DELHI
A
s he walked the ceremonial red carpet, his chest swollen with pride, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Durbar Hall to be conferred the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind, a trail of memories flowed through the mind of the retired Indian Army subedar. But Murlikant Rajaram Petkar, 71, quickly shook off the flashback and stood upright in front of the President, greeting him in military style. Indeed, March 21, 2018, was a far cry from the day way back in 1982 when the government rejected Petkar’s claim for an Arjuna Award, who is India’s first paralympic gold medallist. He won
the 50 metre freestyle swimming event at the Summer Paralympics held at Heidelberg, Germany, in August 1972. Earlier, at the 3rd Commonwealth Paraplegic Games at Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1970, Petkar had bagged a gold in the 50 meter freestyle swimming, a silver in javelin throw and a bronze in shot-put. “I have put all that behind me. I am glad that the government finally recognized my achievements. I did feel disheartened when I was denied an Arjuna Award on the ground that I was a disabled person,” Petkar told IANS soon after he was conferred the Padma Shri. “I made a bundle of all my certificates and medals and stashed
them away, resolving never to make any application for any award again. Then, on January 25 this year, I got a call from the government that I had been shortlisted for the Padma Shri,” he said. The story behind his disability begs to be told. It is a tale of the man’s grit and determination. And what deserves rousing accolades and greater appreciation more than his sporting achievements is the man’s spirit and resolve to beat the odds life has thrown at him. Petkar doesn’t recall the exact day. It was some time in September 1965 when a bloody war with Pakistan was raging. Petkar was with his unit somewhere in the Sialkot sector when, around 4 p.m., a Pakistani bomber attacked

their position. He took nine bullets — one is still lodged in his backbone — and was bedridden for over two years. He also lost his memory for some time. “All I remember now is that we were just resting after having our
lunch. Suddenly, the Havildar Major came shouting. Some of us, half asleep as we were, thought we were being called for tea. I remember there was some confusion and some jawans just went outside and were killed,” Petkar said.

Kim secretly meets Xi in Beijing The meet came before Kim’s talks with South Korean President Moon and US President Trump
Moon-Kim to meet on April 27 SEOUL: South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will meet on April 27 for the first time since 2007, the two countries announced on Thursday after high-level talks. The two leaders will meet at the Peace House on the southern side of the border village of Panmunjom, Yonhap news agency quoted an official joint statement as saying. It will mark the third inter-Korean summit following those in 2000 and
2007 which were held in Pyongyang. Senior officials from both sides exchanged views in an amicable atmosphere, reflecting the recent detente on the Korean Peninsula. “Over the past 80 days, there have been many dramatic events that have not been seen earlier,” Ri Son-gwon, the North’s chief delegate, said at the start of the meeting. The April summit will likely serve as a critical venue for discussions to resolve the North’s nuclear issue.

Putin calls mall fire ‘criminal negligence’ MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said the shopping mall fire that claimed 64 lives, including those of 41 children, was caused by “criminal negligence” and all those responsible for it would be punished. The horrific fire started on the top floor of the four-storey Winter Cherry shopping mall on Sunday in Kemerovo, located in southern Siberia around 3,000 km east of Moscow. Most of the victims were children as the mall’s shops, cinema and bowling alley were packed due to school holidays.
El-Sisi leads Egypt presidential election CAIRO: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is garnering a sweeping majority in the presidential election held earlier this week with a vote share of around 90 per cent, preliminary results showed on Thursday. Early estimates of turnout has varied from one governorate to another as vote counting began late on Wednesday after polls closed in a three-day vote, reports Al Ahram news. In Alexandria, El-Sisi received around 88 percent of the vote, with a turnout of about 38 percent. In Daqahliya, El-Sisi received 85 percent of the vote. —IANS
Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump in April and May, respectively. A special train used by his father and grandfather in the past ferried Kim to Beijing on Sunday, but that was not confirmed by North or China until Wednesday morning when Xinhua put out a story about the reclusive leader having met Xi. The news outlet described Kim’s
visit from Sunday to Wednesday as “unofficial” and said the North Korean leader and Xi discussed the Korean Peninsula nuclear crisis. Kim told Xi that the situation on the Korean Peninsula was “improving” as Pyongyang took the initiative to ease tensions and decided to talk to Seoul and Washington. The development contradicted a view that China, North’s sole ally, had
found itself sitting on the fence when Kim agreed to directly talk to Moon and Trump. This may give Kim more leverage when holding talks with Trump. China is North’s sole ally and their ties date back to the Korean War in which Mao Zedong’s elder son died fighting against the South. It is also believed that the North pays heed to what Beijing says.
Malala returns to Pak five years after Taliban attack IANS, ISLAMABAD
P
akistani Nobel laureate and education activist Malala Yousafzai arrived here on Thursday, more than five years after she left the country following a failed assassination attempt by the Taliban for advocating girls rights to education. Yousafzai’s flight landed at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport at 1.41 a.m., reports Geo News. The 20-year-old was accompanied by her parents and CEO of the
Malala Fund. She is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, as well as other important figures. Yousafzai will also participate in the “Meet the Malala” programme during her four-day stay in Pakistan. In October 2012, Yousafzai — then 15-years-old — was shot in the head at point-blank range by Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) gunmen as she was returning from her school in Swat valley. She suffered bullet injuries and

‘China told Trump of Kim Jong-un’s visit’ WASHINGTON: China told the US that North Korean leader Kim JongUn visited Beijing this week, the White House has said. The communication on Monday between Beijing and Washington also included a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping for his US counterpart, Donald Trump, a statement said on Tuesday, Efe news reported. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the US has discussed Kim’s visit with South Korea and Japan. “We see this development as further evidence that our campaign of maximum pressure is creating the appropriate atmosphere for dialogue with North Korea,” she said. The shooting drew widespread international condemnation, Geo News reported. She has become an internationally recognized symbol of resistance to the Taliban’s efforts of denying women education and other rights. In 2014, Yousafzai became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights. Earlier this month, the Nobel laureate appeared on “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman” on Netflix. Speaking of Swat, Malala stated: “It is just like a paradise on Earth.” She said she “did not realize how beautiful Swat was” until she moved to the UK.
Diplomats expulsion: Russia vows ‘harsh response’ IANS, MOSCOW
R
ussia on Tuesday accused the US of pressuring Western countries to carry out mass expulsion of its diplomats over an alleged nerve agent attack on a former spy living in the UK and said Moscow will respond “harshly” to the decision. As NATO too announced the expulsion of seven Russian diplomats from Brussels, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the US of “colossal blackmail” and said there were “few independent countries” left in modern Europe, TASS news agency reported.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said “Moscow will respond harshly to the move by Washington and a number of
Western countries” and that “the US had once again directed false accusations at Russia”, and that it “threatened and attempted to turn
everything upside down”, Sputnik news agency reported. However, she stressed that Moscow would not abandon strategic stability talks with Washington. The US on Monday ordered the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats, joining governments across Europe in punishing the Kremlin for the nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia that they blamed on Moscow. So far, a total of 25 nations have announced the expulsion of 140 Russian diplomats which is thought to be the largest in history.

Luke Manimaran Degarajoo, 43, was sentenced this week for touching the 18-year-old girl inappropriately during a physiotherapy session in his clinic in March 2017. She visited him seeking treatment for back and hip pain, the Strait Times reported. At that time, Degarajoo told the girl the treatment session would last 15 minutes and directed her to a massage bed in a therapy room. Meanwhile, the victim’s friend waited outside and the door to the room was left half shut. During the massage, the physiotherapist told the teenager to remove her top and loosen her shorts. Wylie said SCL Group, the parent organization of Cambridge Analytica, has its office headquartered in Indirapuram in Ghaziabad and its regional offices in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Patna and Pune. “I’ve been getting a lot of requests from Indian journalists. So here are some of SCL’s past projects in India. To the most frequently asked question — yes, SCL/CA works in India and has offices there. This is what modern colonialism looks like,” Wylie tweeted. He posted two pictures of what looks like slides of a pitch presentation of SCL India explaining its national experience in the country. It said the company has a database of over 600 districts and seven lakh villages. But it didn’t identify the source of the database or whether it was collected from any social media sites.

“Our micro-level information includes household level demographics, specifically focussing on caste data, linked to online mapping applications.” The SCL India, according to the tweeted document, helped clients to identify and target key groups within the population “to effectively influence their behavior to realize a desired outcome”. It explained that SCL provided its clients the research to develop and “disseminate the right messages from the right sources using the right communication channels”. It said in 2011, SCL India undertook a state-wide research campaign to identify voter caste by household.
“This booth-level polling data formed the basis of further research into swing voter motivation and supporter mobilization strategies which were presented to individual candidates and tailored to their constituencies.” During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, SCL India managed the campaign of a number of Lok Sabha candidates. “The research and campaign teams employed SCL India’s proprietary data collection methodologies to form strategies that gave the clients successful election campaigns.” In the 2010 Bihar elections, SCL India was asked to provide electoral research and strategy for the JD-U
of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. “SCL undertook a behavioral research programme targeting over 75 per cent of households to assist the client in not only identifying the correct battlegrounds but also the right audiences, messages and, most importantly, the right castes to target with their campaigns.” In the 2007 Uttar Pradesh polls, SCL India carried out a full political survey on behalf of a “major party” which the document didn’t name. “The research included a party audit and a state-wide census of politically active individuals using in-depth interviews to assess the satisfaction levels of party workers at booth level.
NEW YORK: A Romanian employee of Cambridge Analytica (CA), who worked on its project in India, may have been “poisoned” in Kenya, an ex-employee told a British parliamentary select committee this week. Christopher Wylie, former employee of Cambridge Analytica, told the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee that Dan Muresan, who had worked on the Indian project, was suspected to have been poisoned in his Kenyan hotel room in 2012 after a deal went sour. Wylie said that CA worked “effectively” in India with an office and staff there and “I believe their (CA’s) client was Congress”. Appearing before the panel alongside Wylie, data protection expert Paul-Olivier Dehaye alleged that Muresan had double-crossed the Congress while working for it by getting paid by an unnamed Indian billionaire who wanted it to lose. However, during the testimony videocast by British Parliament on the web, Wylie clarified his assertion about the poisoning of Muresan by saying: “I cannot speak to the veracity of that. “This is what I have been told, and so I am not saying this is a matter of fact: people suspected that he was poisoned in his hotel room,” he said.
Does NaMo app share its India far from securing citizens’ data data with third party illegally? NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

T
he Narendra Modi government is facing the ire of privacy vigilantes for illegally sharing data from the “official app of the Prime Minister of India” with a third-party company in the US. While the FAQ section of the Narendra Modi app promises that the data that users provide on the app is strictly “private”, housed safely and not passed on to anyone else, a French vigilante hacker in a series of tweets alleged that the personal data, including email IDs, photos, gender and names of the users of Modi’s mobile app were being sent to a third party domain without their consent. “When you create a profile in the official @narendramodi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi #Android app, all your device info (OS, network type, Carrier ..) and personal data (email, photo, gender, name, ..) are sent without your consent to a third-party domain called http://in.wzrkt.com,” the privacy vigilante who goes by the name Elliot Alderson tweeted on March 23. Alderson claimed that this domain belongs to a US-based company CleverTap, a mobile marketing solution provider.
t was a perfect photo-op when Prime Minister Narendra Modi hugged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a meeting at the social media giant's sprawling headquarters at Menlo Park, California, in September 2015. With Facebook embroiled in a massive data breach controversy, the bonhomie appears to be over, with India warning Zuckerberg of “stringent action”, including summoning him over the “misuse” of data to allegedly influence the country’s electoral process. Zuckerberg has recently said Facebook will ensure that its platform is not misused to influence elections in India and elsewhere, but after witnessing how social media platforms were infiltrated during the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit vote in the UK, nothing can be predicted at this time.
PM Modi with Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Headquarters in 2015. While governments the world over are formulating new laws that deal with users’ data security and privacy, and the spread of false news, India lags far behind on this front. Is the country prepared in case a or privacy breach hits its people? According to top cyber law experts, India as a nation has missed the broader point in the ever-chang-
ing tech landscape. “The moot point here is: How do we regulate mobile app providers, social media players and intermediaries in terms of handling and processing the users’ data? We don’t have a data protection law in place. We neither have a national law on cyber security nor a national law on privacy,” Pavan Duggal, the nation’s leading cyber law expert, told IANS. The absence of these critical laws has created a very fertile ground for the misuse and unauthorized access of users’ data by the service providers. “On top of it, India has not revisited its stand on intermediaries’ liabilities since 2008. Also, the service providers have been given a great fillip by a judgement of the Supreme court, where the service providers are directed not to take any action till such time they get a court or a government agency order,” Duggal informed.

Karnataka to vote on May 12 The results will be declared on May 15 in Karnataka where the Congress and the BJP are set to clash for major sweepstakes ahead of the next year Lok Sabha elections IANS, NEW DELHI

K
arnataka, where the Congress and the BJP are set to clash for major sweepstakes ahead of the next year Lok Sabha polls, will vote on May 12 in a single-phased poll to elect its new assembly. The results will be declared on May 15, Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat announced on Tuesday. The date of notification is April 17 and nominations can be filed till April 24. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 25 and the last day for withdrawal is April 27. The 224-member Assembly expires on May 28 in the state where the Congress is currently in power, with 122 seats against the BJP’s 43. The BJP views Karnataka as a gateway to the south where it is looking to widen its base and increase its haul of Lok Sabha seats in 2019. It had been in power in Karnataka from 2008 to 2013. The Congress has announced incumbent Chief Minister Siddaramiah as its chief minister candidate while the BJP is projecting former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa as its face. Minutes before Chief Election Commissioner Rawat announced the schedule of the polling and counting, Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT cell head Amit Malviya had tweeted the dates of the poll and counting day, sparking a row. ‘Got election date from sources’ NEW DELHI: The Times Now channel told the Election Commission (EC) that it got the Karnataka assembly poll date from “informed sources”, but argued that it could not be called a “leak”. In its brief reply, it said: “Times Now news channel accessed the details from informed sources. Given that the information was not entirely accurate it is obvious it wasn’t a leak.” The rest of the respondents who were identified by the EC Commit-

MUMBAI: Ruling NDA ally Shiv Sena on March 30 questioned the “neutral or unbiased” functioning of the Election Commission after the Karnataka Assembly elections date allegedly leaked out before the official announcement. “It was felt the ECI would remain neutral or unbiased. The country had already lost faith in ECI following the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) controversy. After the Karnataka episode, the bare minimum trust in ECI has vanished,” the Sena said. An editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ and ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’ said: “Some Amit Malaviya of the BJP IT Cell announced the Karnataka poll dates (May 12) and punctured the ECI’s scheduled press conference where it was to be officially declared. Congress complains to EC on Shah IANS, BENGALURU

arnataka’s ruling Congress has complained to the Election Commission against the BJP President Amit Shah’s alleged violation of the election code by terming Chief Minister Siddaramaiah “anti-Hindu”. “We have brought to the notice of the poll panel and the state’s chief electoral officer that Shah had violated the poll code by accusing Siddaramaiah of being Ahindu (antiHindu) instead of being pro-Ahinda,” party’s state unit vice-president V.R. Sudarshan told reporters here. Ahinda is a Kannada acronym for the socio-political movement Siddaramaiah launched in 2006 the betterment of minorities, backward classes and Dalits, after he quit the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). Terming Shah’s charge as a violation of the Representation of the People’s Act and an offence under the Indian Penal Code, he urged the poll panel to investigate the com-
plaint and take action against the BJP chief. State CEO Sanjiv Kumar has directed the Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner, who is also the returning officer for the May 12 assembly election to the constituencies in the state’s Malnad region’s district, to order an inquiry into the complaint and submit a report on the action taken.

The three will be allowed to play club cricket and were encouraged by the CA to do so “to maintain links with the cricket community”. for professional players and the Board does not impose them lightly. It is hoped that following a period of suspension, the players will be able to return to playing the game they love and eventually rebuild their careers,” CA Chairman David Peever said. CA’s investigation found Warner responsible for “development of a plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball” and “instruction to a junior player to carry out a plan”. The southpaw was also charged with providing advice to a junior player on how to tamper with the ball “including demonstrating how it could be done”. Warner also misled the Newlands match officials by concealing his knowledge of and involvement in the plan and did not voluntarily report his involvement. CA has appointed wicketkeeperbatsman Tim Paine as the Test captain on a full-time basis. “CA will provide more details of an independent review into the conduct and culture of our Australian men’s team in due course,” CEO James Sutherland said.

ricket Australia (CA) has suspended disgraced captain Steve Smith and vice captain David Warner for 12 months each and opener Cameron Bancroft for nine months over a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. The players were found to have breached article 2.3.5 of the CA Code of Conduct, which relates to conduct at any time that is contrary to the spirit of the game, unbecoming of a representative,

JOHANNESBURG: Australia cricket team head coach Darren Lehmann on March 29 announced his resignation, saying the fourth Test against hosts South Africa starting on March 30 will be his last match in charge of the team. The 48-year-old was this week cleared of any wrongdoing in the ball-tampering scandal. “Saying goodbye to the players was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Lehmann, who won two ICC World Cups in 1999 and 2003 as a player, was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. Australia’s team culture has come under fire in the wake of the scandal
that sent shock waves through cricketing world, from the way the team behaves on the field to the way they are perceived by the public. Lehmann was installed as head coach in June 2013, just weeks out from the Ashes series in England after CA sacked South African Mickey Arthur, who oversaw the ‘homeworkgate’ affair in India, which led to four players being suspended. He coached Australia to three Ashes series wins over traditional rivals England. Under Lehmann, Australia also won their fifth World Cup title in 2015 at home. —IANS
Steve Smith apologizes for ‘failure of his leadership’ SYDNEY: Breaking down repeatedly during a press conference, a distraught former Australia skipper Steve Smith on Thursday apologized for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal and took full responsibility for it. Smith, who along with his deputy David Warner was banned for a year, appeared before the media when he admitted that the Cape Town ball tampering scandal was a failure of his leadership. “I am sorry. I want to make it clear that as captain of the Australia
Cricket team I take full responsibility. I made a serious error of judgment and I now understand the consequences,” Smith told reporters. “I will do everything I can do to make up for my mistake and the damage it has caused. If any good can come of this, it can be a lesson to others, and I hope can be a cause for change,” he added. “I'm sorry and I'm absolutely devastated. I don't blame anyone. I'm the captain of the Australian team. It's on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened," he said. —IANS

community news/midwest Aspirin works wonders for all ills 2
FRIDAY,06 APRIL, 2018
Indian is arrested with drug paraphernalia
BY DR. NILESH.D. MEHTA HICAGO, IL -- Aspirin has been used by physicians for many decades and rightfully touted as a wonder drug. Not only a pain killer, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory drug, Aspirin continued to find its way in the medical field in preventive medicine as well. As one of the over the counter drugs available worldwide, it is singularly the most beneficial medication. The USPSTF (United States Preventive Services Task Force) recommends initiating low dose aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer in adults aged 50 to 59 years who have a 10% or greater 10-year cardiovascular risk, are not at increased risk for bleeding, have a life expectancy of at least 10 years, and are willing to take low-dose aspirin daily for at least 10 years. USPSTF is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine.
Studies have revealed a niche for aspirin to prevent colon cancer recurrence in patients who have previously undergone surgery. Regular use of aspirin after the diagnosis of colorectal cancer is significantly associated with increased survival among patients with mutated-PIK3CA tumors but not among patients with wild-type PIK3CA tumors. Aspirin has to be used for at least five years to utilize the effect on reducing colon cancer and importantly, the preventive effect begins approximately ten years after starting the medication. It is now being recognized that cancer patients who had tumors with low expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) would be more sensitive to the beneficial effects of aspirin.
C
Aspirin and Heart The drug exerts its antiplatelet effects through blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-1. In patients who have been diagnosed to have coronary artery disease, aspirin is used for secondary prevention of additional cardiac events like heart attack. Meta-analysis showed a significant 22% reduction in nonfatal heart attacks among persons taking aspirin compared with those who did not There are several risk factors for developing heart problems. Physicians advise patients to address modifying factors like diet, exercise, weight reduction, glucose control, moderation or no alcohol consumption, and abstinence of nicotine. These issues have to be addressed along with taking aspirin for additional benefit to reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular mortality. Aspirin and Cancer While scientists continue to work hard to elucidate the cause of cancer in human beings, it has been hypothesized that inflammation has
been shown to play a major role in the pathogenesis of cancer. Inflammatory process activates the immune system through proinflammatory chemicals and subsequently triggers transformation into malignant cells. Some tumors or cancers has been associated with chronic infections, such as hepatitis B and C viruses (Liver cancer), human papilloma virus (cervical cancer), Helicobacter pylori (stomach cancer and lymphoma), and prostatitis (prostate cancer). It is theorized that anticancer effects of aspirin may be due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme. Death rates from heart disease and colon cancer are reduced by taking aspirin. Considering the potential for high risk of side effects of aspirin, it is not intended as a routine therapy to prevent the occurrence of cancer. Choices for patients need to be individualized by discussing with their doctors to review the risks and benefits of aspirin therapy. Adverse effects of aspirin may include mucosal damage to the gastrointestinal tract which can result in erosions, ulcers, and bleeding. Aspirin can also increase the risk of strokes and hence caution needs to be exercised when taking the drug. It is always advisable to consult your doctor before taking any over the counter medications to weigh the risks and benefits.
Aspirin and blood clot In patients who undergo surgery, there is a risk of post-operative blood clots. It is a common practice for doctors to use blood thinners either in pill form or injections to prevent a blood clot for a few weeks after surgery. However, aspirin is not a treatment for patients who have a blood clot. The antiplatelet effect of aspirin does ‘thin the blood’ but the value of this medication is not for treatment of blood clots commonly referred to as DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or PE (pulmonary embolism – blood clots in lungs), but, rather has prevention of blood clots as its value. Clinical trials and meta-analyses have suggested that aspirin may be effective for the prevention of venous thromboembolism postoperatively, but comparisons with direct oral anticoagulants were not performed until recently. Aspirin stacked up quite well against a true anticoagulant medication rivaroxaban. This study was published in February 2018 in New England Journal of Medicine. In sum, this wonder drug has established all-around potential in heart disease, cancer, blood clot prevention, fever management, pain treatment and anti-inflammatory. Simply put, in cricketing parlance - Sir Gary Sobers of cricket analogy would not be far-fetched.
SACS marks Intl. Women’s Day BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – The International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated in Chicago on March 8 with the theme #PressforProgress in line with the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report which measured gender inequality. The South Asian Cultural Society of Chicago (SACS), a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve heritage, language, and culture by promoting education, celebrated its 4th annual event by inviting a panel of speakers to discuss the hardships and struggles they or other women have overcome in their life or career. President and founder of the organization, Ghousia Sultana, the day was marked to highlight the achievements women have made in the South Asian community as a result of their efforts and struggles. Among other speakers, Madhu Krishnamurthy, Anjum Rubina, Gwendolyn Brewer, Sharmin Shahjahan, Afshan Khan, and Syed Hussaini weighed in by discussing and sharing personal experiences and struggles that they faced before reaching the platform where they stand today. Sultana compared herself to Christopher Columbus--an explorer travelling to a foreign land--during a time when cell phones and
C
internet were practically non-existent. Shahjahan, a village trustee for Hanover Park, discussed the importance of civic engagement and how getting involved with local organizations helped her engage with the community and eventually lead her to the position she is at today. Rubina talked about the value of women’s resilience and stigma’s endured within the South Asian community to create one’s own identity. Brewer identified with the theme by disclosing her experience of raising two children as a single parent and being homeless and how social services within the community really helped her. Krishnamurthy talked about how she came from a family of five girls all of whom are highly qualified professionals and how they broke the
barriers for the unexpected with the support of their parents. Khan, a lawyer who specializes in immigration and citizenship, discussed the progresses her female clients have made who were victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking. Hussaini expressed his concerns regarding gender parity and equal pay stating women making .75 cents to the dollar is an injustice. Being a father of a teenage daughter himself, he felt that it shouldn’t be just women celebrating and honoring IWD. IWD was born in early 1900’s. Over the decades, the objective of IWD has evolved and embraced culture and ethnicity to emerge as a celebration of appreciation, respect, and love towards women.

Taxi driver molests elderly woman
Mohamed Omran
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A cab-driver is facing felony charges after being accused of forcibly kissing and grabbing a woman last month while she was on her way to visit her husband at a nursing home. Mohamed Omran, 46, is charged with felony counts of attempted criminal sexual assault to a person older than 60 and aggravated battery to a person older than 60, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. The 81-year-old woman hailed a cab driven by Omran about 6:35 pm on February 25 near Chicago Avenue and Rush Street in the Gold Coast, Assistant State’s Attorney Geetu Naik said on March 21 at Omran’s initial court appearance. They had a casual conversation on the ride to visit her husband at a nursing home on the North Side. When they arrived, Omran, who is 6-feet-tall and 185 pounds, got in the back of the cab with the woman and kissed her. She tried to bite his tongue in order to remove him, but he continued to kiss her mouth for several minutes. Omran, employed by Rock N Roses Taxi Service, eventually stopped and got the woman’s walker from the truck of the car while touching her buttocks under her clothes. He wouldn’t stop and she told authorities she was worried he was going to assault her. When she got into the nursing home, she immediately reported the incident to a receptionist. She later told her husband and adult children who informed the police.

Jail for motel managers for enslaving nephew
BY A STAFF WRITER MAHA, NE -- Two former western Nebraska motel managers will spend a year and a day in federal prison and be deported for enslaving and abusing their nephew. Indian Americans Vishnu Chaudhari, 50, and Leela Chaudhari, 44, were sentenced on March 19 in federal court in Omaha. They pleaded guilty to conspiracy and alien harboring for financial gain in December. They have also paid the man $40,000 in restitution. The couple managed a Super 8 Motel in Kimball, Nebraska, 120 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado. Investigators said the couple arranged for their nephew’s bond to be paid after he was taken into immigration custody in 2011 and then forced him to work for them from October 2011 to February 2013. All three are from India and illegally living in the US. The pair forced their nephew to clean rooms, wash clothes and do other chores for them seven days a week. The Chaudharis isolated him from guests at the motel and hid him from police officers in the area. Leela often assaulted the victim and Vishnu warned him against escaping but a motel guest and local law enforcement helped the man escape.

Indian Scientists’ tributes to Stephen Hawking

BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- Indian scientists are remembering physicist Stephen Hawking for his contributions that directly affected them in their careers, following the death of the legendary scientist on March 14. A post-doctoral research fellow and astrophysicist at Georgia Institute of Technology, Karan Jani credits Hawking for putting him on the path towards becoming the scientist he is today, according to a Quartz report. Jani, who was part of a global team that helped detect the existence of gravitational waves and among Forbes’s 30 under 30-Science list in 2017, said it was Hawking’s 1988 book, “A Brief History of Time,” that introduced him to a world of big ideas that nobody in his small town of Vadodara was talking about.
A
“One of the great things about Hawking was he broke that communication barrier between scientists and regular people. His book reached (a) small town of India. And ironically, no Indian scientists’ books had reached that market,” says Jani. Jani has worked at the LIGO Livingston Observatory in the US and the Albert Einstein Institute in Germany, besides the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, where Hawking was a research director, the report noted. Another scientist of Indian origin, Abhas Mitra, when speaking of Hawking said that he had determined in 2000 that ‘exact’ black holes as we thought of them could not exist as they would not follow the rules of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Instead, Mitra argued that all black holes would only be approximate or quasi black holes.
BY A STAFF WRITER ERMONT, FL -- A Montpelier, Vermont, Indian American middle school student has won the Vermont Scripps Spelling Bee and will represent the state at the national contest in Washington, D.C. Twelve-year-old Raghav Dhandi won the competition on March 21 by correctly spelling the word ‘slavering.’ The seventh-grader came in 3rd place in the state last year. He told reporters that he thought he had made enough progress to win this year, but the victory still “feels like a dream.” He received a trophy and $250 for his college education. Earlier this month, Vasundara Govindarajan won the state spelling bee in Florida. In winning the competition for the fourth straight year, Govindarajan will take part in the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. The 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be her third national competition. In her first, she placed 22nd in the nation. In her second, she placed 44th. Govindrajan got into spelling by way of her older brother, Vaidya, who also went to nationals.
Hawking discovered that black holes emit electromagnetic radiation — which later became known as Hawking Radiation — and proved theoretically that they could eventually disappear for good. Then, in 2014, he said there actually were no black holes at all, or at least not in the way we’d been taught to think about them. Hawking, it seemed, had solved the “black hole information paradox.” He even went on to head BARC’s theoretical astrophysics department. And though his life’s work never brought him the kind of international renown that Hawking enjoyed, Mitra is also mourning the physicist’s recent death at the age of 76. “Stephen Hawking has been a highly inspiring human being for all, including me, and his passing away is a great loss for physics,” he said in the report.

Pakistani doc will pay $70m for negligence BY A STAFF WRITER RESNO, CA -- A jury in Fresno, Calif., has ordered Pakistani American heart surgeon Dr. Pervaiz Chaudhry to pay about $ 70 million to the family of the man he left in a coma six years ago following heart surgery. Chaudhry, who is currently in Pakistan with his family, conducted heart surgery in 2012 on then 70-year-old Silvino Perez, who, after the procedure, fell into a coma, in which he remains today. Earlier this month, a jury in Fresno Superior Court ruled Chaudhry to be negligent for leaving the operating room and letting his physician assistant close the chest of Perez. The jury on March 19 ordered Chaudhry to pay $55.6 million to Perez’s family. On March 20, the jury ordered that the 57-year-old doctor pay an additional $12.39 million in punitive damages to deter his conduct for leaving the operating room. The jury awarded Perez $25 million for past and future pain and suffering as part of the $55.6 million. Now 76, Perez remains in a vegetative state, but he can feel pain, said Ricardo Echeverria of Claremont, one of three lawyers representing the Perez family.

Because Perez was the primary caretaker for his wife Maria, who suffers from symptoms of dementia, the jury awarded her $25 million for her pain and suffering and loss of love and support, it added. Additionally, Chaudhry was ordered to pay $5.6 million in medical bills to the Perez family, adding up to the $55.6 million. The doctor testified that he supervised the closing of Perez’s chest by his physician assistant, Bella Albakova, and another surgeon, Dr. Kalwant Dhillon. He said he left the operating
room after Perez was in stable condition with no surgical bleeding. Chaudhry received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He did his residency in general surgery at Henry Ford Hospital at Wayne State, and then a thoracic surgery fellowship at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., following which he joined the Valley Cardiac Surgery Medical Group in Fresno.
Cops probe van crash by Indian BY A STAFF WRITER OSEVILLE, CA -- Investigators said on March 23 that they are stumped as to why a man who emigrated 25 years ago from India drove a flaming minivan full of propane tanks and gasoline cans through the main gate of a major Northern California Air Force Base last week, but see no evidence of terrorism. Hafiz Kazi, 51, an Indian American, died in the Kia minivan on March 21 night after veering through the gate at Travis Air Force Base and crashing, said FBI agent Sean Ragan. Kazi had no known links to terrorism, did not leave behind a manifesto or any threats or explanation, and a video found on a cellphone provided no clue. Kazi had lived in the Bay Area, including Sausalito, Ragan said, but his most recent place of residence was not known. Air Force gate personnel initially thought

Belarus beauty wins Miss Supermodel Worldwide 2018 title GURUGRAM: Aleksandra Liashkova from Belarus was crowned Miss Supermodel Worldwide 2018 at a grand finale. Ekaterina Evdokimova of Russia was declared 1st runner-up, Uzbekistan’s Zarina Andirjanova was crowned second runner-up and Chantarachota Paphattanun from Thailand took the third runner-up spot
at the event. India’s Shweta Parmar was awarded Miss Congeniality. Held at the Kingdom of Dreams, the first edition of the pageant saw Liashkova beating 42 other hopefuls. It was organized by Ten Square Media and Rubaru Group. The contestants at the 10-day event went through three rounds fol-
lowed by the national costume round, bikini round and evening gown round. They also participated in charity events, workshops and symposiums. “Competition in the entertainment industry is getting tougher with each passing day and models really need to give their best to make a place for themselves,” said Mandeep Thakran, Director of Ten Square Media.

f you only smoke marijuana there are higher chances that you may end up smoking cigarettes too, a new study suggests. According to the researchers, cannabis use is associated with an increased initiation of cigarette smoking among non-cigarette smokers. While cigarette smoking has long been on the decline, marijuana use is on the rise and, disproportionately, marijuana users also smoke cigarettes, the researcher said. “Understanding the potential links between cannabis use and cigarette initiation in youth is needed given that recent data suggest that cannabis use is more common among adolescents than cigarette use,” said co-author Renee Goodwin from the Mailman
The researchers also found adults who smoke cigarettes and use cannabis are less likely to quit smoking cigarettes than those who do not use cannabis.
School of Public Health. The analyses for the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, were based on data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions in 2001-2002 and 2004-
Music lessons boost children’s memory, grades LONDON: Joining a music class may help children improve academic performance as researchers have found that such lessons can enhance their cognitive abilities — including language-based reasoning and shortterm memory. “Despite indications that music has beneficial effects on cognition, music is disappearing from general education curricula,” said study co-author Artur Jaschke from VU University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “This inspired us to initiate a longterm study on the possible effects of music education on cognitive skills that may underlie academic achievement,” Jaschke added. For the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, the researchers conducted the study with
147 children across multiple Dutch schools, using a structured musical method developed by the Ministry of Research and Education in the Netherlands together with an expert centre for arts education. All schools followed the regular primary school curriculum, with some providing supplementary music or visual arts classes. In these, the children were given both theoretical and practical lessons.
2005, and responses from 34,639 individuals. The results suggested that marijuana use — even in the absence of cannabis use disorder — is associated with increased odds of smoking onset, relapse, and persistence.
They also found adults who smoke cigarettes and use cannabis are less likely to quit smoking cigarettes than those who do not use cannabis. Former smokers who use cannabis are also more likely to relapse to cigarette smoking, the researcher said. “Developing a better understanding of the relationship between marijuana use and cigarette use transitions is critical and timely as cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of premature death and disease, and use of cannabis is on the rise in the US,” Goodwin said. As cannabis use is much more common than cannabis use disorder, its potential impact on cigarette use in the general community may be greater than estimates based on studies of cannabis use disorder alone, the researchers said.
NEW YORK: Parents beware. If you are expressing your conflicts in front of your children, you may be harming them with lasting damages, a new study suggests. The study, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, shows that the emotional processing of these children, too, can be affected — potentially making them over-vigilant, anxious and vulnerable to distorting human interactions that are neutral in tone, throwing them off-balance interpersonally as adults. “The message is clear: even low-level adversity like parental conflict isn’t good for kids,” said the study’s lead author Alice Schermerhorn, Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont in the US.
Sampath wins ‘Beat Bobby Flay’ IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndian chef Aarthi Sampath, who had earlier won the American reality-based cooking show Chopped, has now emerged as the winner of Beat Bobby Flay. Chef Bobby Flay is no stranger to culinary competitions. He is known for hosting Bobby’s Dinner Battle and competing on Throwdown! With Bobby Flay. In Beat Bobby Flay, he does both. Each half-hour episode of Beat Bobby Flay, an American cooking competition show, begins with two chefs competing to create a dish using an ingredient chosen by Flay. The winner of that challenge — as determined by a special guest judge — goes to the second round, in which he or she battles against Flay. Sampath, whose winning dish

Biryani although is nostalgia to others, it’s still not very known, rather the complexity of making it.” “I am super happy to win the competition and this is just an additional feather in my cap,”
added the Indian chef, who is currently residing in Seattle. Sampath’s foray into the culinary world began with an exploration of flavors found in the diverse kitchens of Mumbai and eventually led to her current position as Chef De Cuisine at Junoon, a Michelin starred Indian restaurant in New York.

Change lifestyle, prevent cancer Following a healthy way of living — exercising, eating fibers and quitting smoking, among others — can lower thousands of cancer cases a week, says a study IANS, LONDON
E
xercising, quitting smoking and shedding weight may be key lifestyle behaviors that can cut down thousands of cancer cases a week, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin. The other major preventable lifestyle behavior includes drinking alcohol. Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution, and eating good amount of fiber can also go a long way in keeping the deadly disease at bay. Following these can prevent nearly four in 10 cancer cases in the UK, says the Cancer Research UK, a non-profit, in a paper published in the British Journal of Cancer. The study showed that more than one in 20 cancer cases could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight.

Knee pain can trigger depression in elderly IANS, TOKYO
K LONDON: Researchers have found that an anti-inflammatory drug — licensed for treating rheumatoid arthritis — may help patients in the early stages of stroke to reduce harmful inflammation. The study published in the journal Stroke follows earlier research that shows the drug given as an intravenous therapy reduces inflammation in stroke and sub-arachnoid haemorrhage patients. Researchers define stroke as the most common cause of disability in adults and a leading cause of death worldwide. “Though strokes affect different people in different ways, for many people they have a devastating effect on their long-term health and wellbeing. Excessive inflammation after a stroke is known to be harmful and predicts a worse outcome in patients,” said co-author Craig Smith, Professor at The University of Manchester. The drug Kineret was given as a small injection just under the skin without giving the patients any identifiable adverse reactions. Kineret works by blocking the actions of IL-1 which is released into the body following injury caused by a stroke. — IANS
nee pain in the elderly, which can damage the quality of life, can make them prone to depression, researchers say. Osteoarthritis occurs when a joint becomes inflamed, usually because the protective cartilage and other tissues that cushion joints like the knee become damaged and worn over time. Knee pain from osteoarthritis
can make it harder to take care of yourself, which can damage your quality of life. In turn, it can lead to depression. The study, led by Yuji Nishiwaki from the Toho University in Japan, showed that elderly who experienced knee pain at night while in bed, while putting on socks, or while getting in or out of a car were more likely to report having symptoms of depression. The team examined 573 people aged 65 or older for the study,

Prevention is the most cost-effective way of beating cancer,” Kumar said. “Obesity is a huge health threat right now, and it will only get worse if nothing is done. Banning junk food TV adverts before the 9 p.m. watershed is an important part of the comprehensive approach needed,” said Linda Bauld from the nonprofit. Overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and sunbeds causes around 13,600 cases of melanoma skin cancer a year, while drinking alcohol, eating too little fiber caused around 11,900 and 11,700 cases respectively. Outdoor air pollution was responsible for around 3,600 lung cancer cases a year. 2005 and 2006) none of the participants had symptoms of depression. Two years later, nearly all of them completed follow-up interviews. The participants answered questions about their knee pain and were evaluated for symptoms of depression. Nearly 12 per cent of the participants had developed symptoms of depression. Another recently published study showed that both knee pain and functional impairments in elderly individuals are associated with the development of depressive symptoms. “Examining elderly people’s responses to questions about pain at night and difficulties performing daily activities may be an efficient way of identifying those at high risk of developing depressive symptoms,” the researchers said.
Pre-schoolers with ADHD may have reduced brain volume IANS, NEW YORK
P
re-schoolers with symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may have reduced brain volumes in regions essential for behavioral control, says a new study. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed form of psychopathology during pre-school years, and during early childhood, it is associated with significant long-term health. The study represents the first comprehensive examination of cortical brain volume in pre-school children with ADHD and provides an indication that anomalous brain structure is evident in the early stages of development.
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed form of psychopathology during pre-school years, and during early childhood, it is associated with significant long-term health.
According to the researchers, the findings can help in determining new ways to predict which children
are most at risk for developing ADHD. “These findings confirm what parents have known for a while
— even in very young children, ADHD is a real biological condition with pronounced physical and cognitive manifestations,” said lead author E. Mark Mahone from the Kennedy Krieger Institute. For the study, published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, researchers studied the brain development of 90 medication-naive pre-schoolers between the ages of four and five years. They used high-resolution anatomical MRI scans along with cognitive and behavioral measures. “MRI research in children can be challenging — particularly so for young children with ADHD — as it requires them to lie still for periods up to 30-40 minutes,” said Mahone.
