nvestment opportunities in India were the focus of discussions between the new Indian Ambassador S. Jaishankar and a group of 90 industry executives and businessmen from the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC). The meeting here on January 30 was followed by a welcome reception of over 200 member companies of the trade group comprising 350 top-tier U.S. and Indian companies advancing U.S.-India commercial ties, U.S. government officials, think tanks, and friends of India. Jaishankar, according to a media release, engaged with USIBC on important topics that have dominated the bilateral commercial relationship in recent months —namely, tax treatment of investments in India and the protection of intellectual property (IP). Industry captains also discussed the need for improvements to infrastructure and increased investment in defense and energy, it said. The executives advocated for the lifting of FDI caps in important sectors like insurance and defense, and for adjustment of the retail policy to attract major investment and organized players into India. WASHINGTON: Conversations are underway to repair the avoidable damage done by the Khobragade episode to the India-United States relationship, which both sides consider “indispensable”, according to India’s new ambassador S. Jaishankar. “For those of us who have devoted time and energy to building Indo-U.S. ties, the last few weeks have been truly distressing,” he told a Washington audience Wednesday, alluding to the worst diplomatic spat between the two countries over the December 12 arrest of an Indian diplomat. “What I have encountered since my arrival is the sense that this situation should never have happened,” said Jaishankar in his first public comments on U.S.-India relations at the Carnegie
WASHINGTON: Janet Yellen has been sworn in as the U.S. Federal Reserve chief, becoming the first woman to occupy the post. She was previously the Fed’s vice chief. The oath was administered on February 3 by Governor Daniel K. Tarullo in the Board Room, Xinhua reported citing a Federal Reserve statement. U.S. President Barack Obama announced Yellen’s nomination on October 9, 2013. The Senate confirmed her on January 6. As a close ally of former Fed chair Ben Bernanke, Yellen is expected to keep enforcing the low interest rates and cutting back the massive bond-buying program that aims to restore growth.
sserting that the U.S. downgrade of India’s aviation regulator had “absolutely nothing” to do with the Khobragade affair, the U.S. says it was committed to help India get its status back as soon as possible. “This absolutely had nothing to do with the ongoing case of Dr. Khobragade,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters on January 31 when asked if the U.S. action would hurt efforts to restore ties with India after their worst diplomatic spat over the Dec 12 arrest of an Indian diplomat. “Again, this was a regulatory decision,” she said referring to the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority’s (FAA) downgrade of the safety ranking of India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from category-I to category-II rating. “I don’t know how much leeway we have in those,” Harf said when asked if it was not possible to try and defer the FAA decision amid efforts to repair frayed relations over the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, India’s former deputy consul general in New York. “But it’s my understanding that

this was all made inside a regulatory framework that has very specific criteria countries have to meet under ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards that we’re all party to,” she said. “These aren’t our standards,” Harf said commenting on India’s expression of disappointment over the FAA decision. On the broader question of relationship Harf said: “we’re all committed to moving on to working together on all of the issues we work on all the time.” “A number of folks obviously have talked to our Indian counterparts over the last few weeks, and I think we’re all committed right now to moving the relationship forward and really focusing on working together,” she said.

he government has an ambitious agenda for the last session of the 15th Lok Sabha beginning February 5 of passing Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s pet anti-corruption bills and other pending legislation. However, the opposition seems to be in no mood to let the government score brownie points just before the elections. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hoped that Parliament in its wisdom will pass the bills. Rahul Gandhi too is learnt to be planning to meet the opposition leaders. The United Progressive Alliance government is keen to pass six
pending anti-corruption bills despite likely disruptions over Telangana and the opposition’s apparent desire not to hand over an election plank to the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Officials said 39 bills were on the agenda for the session including the women’s reservation bill. The opposition has also spelled out its issues including the now cancelled VVIP chopper deal and price rise. With Lok Sabha elections expected in April-May, the government is likely to make a strong push for passing the pending anti-graft legislation in an apparent bid to take political credit for this and shore up its image, battered by allegations of corrup-
tion levelled by opposition parties. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has over the past two months been strongly pitching for passing these six anti-graft bills. The Congress had suffered heavy reverses in the assembly polls late last year and the party is making an apparent effort to reclaim the lost ground. “The anti-corruption bills are a priority for the government. We will like them to be passed,” Congress spokesperson Shobha Ojha told IANS. The government will also take a vote-on-account during the session which will conclude on February 21. According to PRS Legislative Research, a think tank, there are 126 bills pending in the two houses.
D
elhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has stirred a fresh controversy by naming over 20 top politicians including Rahul Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari, Mayawati and Sharad Pawar as ‘corrupt’. Hitting back, Congress questioned his commitment to a legal process while the BJP asked him to furnish proof or apologize. Union minister Farooq Abdullah, who was also among the 20 politicians named by Kejriwal, said he will take recourse to legal action against the Aam Aadmi Party leader. In a statement, the prime minister said: “The attack on Nido Tania, the student from Arunachal Pradesh, is most condemnable. While the actual cause of Nido Tania’s death will be known only after the autopsy report is received, the violence which preceded his demise is tragic and shameful.” He also said people from other parts of the country like the northeast are as much a part of the city as anyone else. “All citizens need to work together to ensure that our brothers and sisters from northeast feel safe and secure in Delhi,” he said. Various organizations and students from the northeastern states, demanding justice have been holding protests in the Capital.

Modi doesn’t assure new
bull market
The fact remains that market participants are bullish on Indian equities over the next year solely because of rising expectations of Narendra Modi-led BJP at the helm VATSAL SRIVASTAVA, NEW DELHI
I
ndian equities have witnessed a few choppy trading sessions following the United States Federal Reserve’s announcement to further taper its monthly bond buying program by $10 billion to $65 billion a month. The emerging market currency sell-off has also added to short term bearishness. But the stabilization of the Turkish lira and the South African rand in the latter half of last week will most likely lead to an improvement in trading sentiment in the emerging market space. As the Nifty of India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE) looks to find support around the 6,000point level, the underlying mood still remains bullish with all major
brokerage houses having year-end targets at 6,700-7,000 points — a further 10 percent upside from current levels. The main catalyst for this rally would be what the majority of analysts on Dalal Street are calling the key event risk of 2014 — the spring general election. Recent results of state assembly elections and opinion polls are clearly indicative of wave in favor of Narendra Modi the prime ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Foreign institutional investors are “overweight” on India largely based on the assumption that a stable coalition led by the BJP in majority will kick-start the investment cycle by introducing a host of pro-growth policy measures. But what is the corelation between political stability
Reviving craftsmanship

A
new generation of craftsmen from Kashmir are on the path to revive and develop age-old craft techniques like traditional numda rugs, kani
shawls and crewl embroidery through a project that is mentoring them and providing financial assistance of `400,000 — and generating jobs. Six young entrepreneurs from the Valley were in the capital at
BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi and party president Rajnath Singh wave to the crowd during a rally in Meerut, UP.
What is the co-relation between political stability and positive economic outcomes? and positive economic outcomes? The economics research department of JP Morgan put out a note last week to analyze evidence of the past 20 years. This comment presents facts produced in the JP Morgan India special report, titled ‘5 Questions That Keep Us Awake’ dated January 26. To address this question, the analysts created an index of political stability which is defined as the fraction of seats of the largest party in the ruling coalition vis-a-vis the total number of seats in the Lok Sabha. For example, if the party
with the largest number of seats in a governing coalition was 200, the index is 200/543 (543 representing the number of elected seats in the Lok Sabha) or 0.37. Thus, the larger this ratio, the more politically stable the government is presumed to be. When the Indian average GDP growth rate for 1992-2014 is plotted against the index of political stability, we see the negative co-relation between the two variables as shown in the graph. Further, as their analysis points out, both the Asian financial crisis
the lush, green lawns of GandhiKing Plaza at India International Centre Sunday evening where they talked passionately about how the NGO Commitment to Kashmir (CtoK) helped them with financial muscle to establish their small businesses, which in turn have provided employment to a large number of artisans, especially women. One of the success stories is that of 23-year-old Mahvash who has replaced the traditional “flower and leaves” embroidery with “birds of Kashmir”. This twist to a traditional design was welcomed by many, but she didn’t have money to take the skill forward. She then approached CtoK with her idea of producing highend fashion garments and it was immediately lapped up. “Money has definitely helped me with the business, but it is the mentorship that I cherish the most. I have been able to learn a lot from my mentors about business and how to take it forward,” Mahvash told IANS. Because of this assistance, Mahavash has been able to provide
direct employment to over 100 artisans, mostly women, who are involved at various levels in fabricating hand- embroidered shawls. Karan Singh, a Congress member of the Rajya Sabha and son of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of erstwhile princely state of Kashmir, who was the chief guest at the event, said such stories from the Valley are “rare” but provide a “ray of hope” about its future. “We have hardly heard any good news from the Valley in a quarter of a century. There has been a monumental tragedy in Kashmir and such a project is a massive attempt to heal the scars of the community,” he said. “When one gets to hear such rare stories, it gives a ray of hope to us. Kashmir has always been famous for its art and craft and this project is helping young people to exhibit their skills,” he added. The project was conceived by the late L.C. Jain, a former member of the Planning Commission, to enable young people in the Valley sustain themselves. Among the prominent names associated with the project are Laila Tyabji of Dastkar; Manju
in 1998 and the global financial crisis in 2008 occurred during regimes that scored relatively low on the index of stability. Thus, if one were to adjust and include the negative effects on growth of these external factors, the negative correlation would be even stronger. Another possible explanation, according to the research was that perhaps stable regimes engage in more fiscal consolidation, and go after inflation more aggressively. As things stand today, the fact remains that market participants are bullish on Indian equities over the next year solely because of rising expectations of a Modi-led BJP at the center. Anyone looking to put their money in Indian stocks solely based on one future event should keep this analysis in mind.
Nirula and Gita Ram of the Crafts Council of India; Ritu Sethi of Craft Revival Trust; Gulshan Nanda, former chairperson of Central Cottage Industries Emporium and Jain’s family members. In Kashmir, the project has the support of the Crafts Development Institute and its faculty. The selection process at CtoK, which basically run on donations and grants, is simple. It examines the business plans of craftspersons, entrepreneurs and women from the Valley and selects four or five for providing interest-free loans. It also guides in drawing up marketing strategies, apart from conducting skill-enhancement workshops. “There is so much of turbulence in the Valley that people have lost their confidence. The unsettled socio-political of a state that is highly dependent on its craftsmanship has pushed its backwards,” CtoK trustee Tyabji said. “The objective is to enable people sustain themselves, help them with grants, mentor them and help them establish and identify potential markets,” she added.

Murthy all set to be
‘America’s doctor’ The physician would be the first Indian American to be the appointed as US surgeon general if confirmed ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
P
resident Barack Obama’s pick for surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, breezed through his confirmation hearing before a Senate panel even as several Republican senators expressed concern over his support for Obama’s signature healthcare law. Murthy, 36, who would be the first Indian-American to become “America’s doctor” if confirmed by the Democratic controlled Senate, was an early supporter of Obama and his health-care law. A physician with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and an instructor at Harvard Medical School, he co-founded an advocacy group in 2008 called Doctors for Obama, a national organization of 16,000 doctors and medical students. It later became Doctors for America and promoted the Affordable Care Act nicknamed Obamacare. At the hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labour and Pensions Committee, at least

arvard Business School’s Indian-American Dean Nitin Nohria has made an extraordinary public apology for the school’s treatment of female students and professors and vowed to make changes at the institution. Born in Nohar, Rajasthan, Nohria acknowledged to alumni and guests at a function in San Francisco that the school had sometimes treated its female students and professors offensively. He conceded there were times when women at Harvard felt “disrespected and unloved by the school. I’m sorry on behalf of the business school,” he told a hushed room, according to CNN Money. one Republican senator said he expected the Brookline doctor to be confirmed by the full Senate thanks to a recent change in the chamber’s rules allowing a filibuster to be overcome with a simple majority. Murthy told the Senate panel he would focus on community health prevention projects, especially combating obesity, and not primarily on political issues. “The role is not to be a legislator or a judge,” he said. “The role is to be a public
health educator.” Murthy said he believed the surgeon general should focus on areas where there is broad agreement, including prevention of chronic diseases, efforts to curb smoking, and programs to improve diets. He said he would try to work at community level, recruiting religious groups and even arts organizations into public health education programs. He is a graduate of Yale University, where he earned a medical degree and an MBA.

ndian American community in Jackson Heights and broader Queens area of New York has honored Joe Crowley, Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives for his efforts on behalf of the community. During the event in Queens, New York last week, Crowley, vice chair of the Democratic Caucus was recognized for his successful efforts to convince the federal government to begin collecting data on hate crimes committed against Sikh-Americans and Hindu-Americans. His leadership in establishing the first-ever, breakthrough Congressional Diwali celebration in the US Congress in
October 2013 and his ongoing work to end the presumptive ban on Sikhs serving in the US military, were also lauded. “The Indian-American community is an integral part of Queens and our city, contributing to our economic success and enriching our culture,” said Crowley, who serves as the cochair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans in the House. “I am proud to have fought for and won concrete victories on behalf of the community and I will continue to do so,” he said. Nearly 100 community members and leaders from New York’s Sikh-American and the broader Indian-American community attended the event to honor the lawmaker.

Harvard dean apologizes for sexism on campus pledged to more than double the percentage of women who are protagonists in Harvard case studies over the next five years, to 20 percent. Currently, about 9 percent of Harvard case studies — which account for 80 percent of the cases studied at business schools around the world — have women as protagonists. Nohria’s comments, CNN Money noted, come five months after a lengthy front-page article in The New York Times fuelled a major debate on gender issues at Harvard and many other business schools. Today, some 57 percent of Harvard’s cases are international in nature, up from less than 5 percent a decade ago. The school produces roughly 250 new case studies a year.
Kashkari keen on California guv run WASHINGTON: Former IndianAmerican US treasury official Neel Kashkari, a multimillionaire who oversaw the $700 billion bank bailout after the 2008 financial crisis, thinks he can unseat California’s popular Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. Kashkari, who lives in Laguna Beach in Orange County, previously worked for Goldman Sachs. Last year, Kashkari quit his job as an investment banking executive and began travelling across the state and mulling his run for governor, meeting with potential donors, community organizations and regular Californians. “Clearly Governor Brown is a very powerful incumbent, but there are so many examples nationally of where very powerful incumbents lose,” he said on January 31. ndian Americans, who have the highest income among America’s multicultural groups, save much of their higher household income for their children’s college education, according to a new study. This heavy emphasis on higher education, however, leads to times when Indian Americans prioritize saving for their children over saving for themselves, according to the third biennial 2013 State of the American Family Study. The study from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual),offering a broad snapshot of Americans’ financial views indicated that Indian-Americans are savers. One third of them indicating that they have six months or more of their monthly living expenses set aside as savings. The top two
financial priorities of IndianAmerican for their savings are for their children’s college education and keeping the family financially shielded. As a result, one quarter of Indian-Americans struggle between saving to pay for their children’s college education and saving for their own retirement, the study notes. “Being an Asian Indian myself, I know and understand the importance that the community places on putting family first,” said Nimesh Trivedi, director of multicultural market support, U.S. Insurance Group at MassMutual.

The proposed peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban were cancelled on February 4 with each side accusing the other of not doing enough to make the process sustainable and result-oriented and raising questions about each other’s

KATHMANDU: More than two-and-half months after polling for a new Constituent Assembly, Nepal’s legislativeparliament will Monday endeavour to elect a new prime minister following failure of several bids to install a consensus government. Earlier, a sevenday deadline given by President Ram Baran Yadav to install a consensusbased government with the support of all 30 politi-
cal parties represented in the legislative-parliament expired on February 2. After several bids to elect a consensus-based prime minister according to the constitutional provision failed, President Yadav on February 3 instructed Nepal’s parliament to elect the new prime minister through a majority vote. According to the constitutional mandate, the formation of the consensusbased government would be given first priority. If all attempts fail to install such a government, the only option remaining will be for a majority-based government through voting in Parliament. As of now, Sushil Koirala of the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the Parliament is the sole candidate laying claim to the post.

hortly after he was named the new CEO of Microsoft, Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella shot off a letter to employees asking the software giant to “prioritize innovation” and “help drive cultural change.” “While we have seen great success, we are hungry to do more,” wrote Nadella, only the third CEO in the company’s 39-year history, after taking over from Steve Ballmer with founder Bill Gates by his side in a new role as “technology adviser”. “Our industry does not respect tradition — it only respects innovation. This is a critical time for the industry and for Microsoft,” wrote the 22 year Microsoft veteran, who before his elevation headed one of its fastest-growing divisions-the Cloud and Enterprise Group. “Make no mistake, we are headed for greater places — as technology evolves and we evolve with and ahead of it. Our job is to ensure that Microsoft thrives in a mobile and cloud-first world.” Sharing “some background on myself and what inspires and motivates me,” Nadella, 46, who has been married for 22 years and has 3 kids, wrote: “Many who know me say I am also defined by my curiosity and thirst for learning.” “I buy more books than I can finish. Andhra CM congratulates Nadella HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy congratulated Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella on being appointed the CEO of global software giant Microsoft. The chief minister, in his message, said every Indian should be proud of Nadella, who has made a great mark in the world of software. “He made Telugu people proud,” said Kiran Reddy while expressing his happiness over Nadella’s elevation. The chief minister also noted Nadella was educated in Hyderabad Public School (HPS) and was also a member of the HPS cricket team. “The younger generation should get motivated by such personalities,” he said. Kiran Reddy also did his schooling from the HPS.
Who is Satya Nadella?
BORN IN 1969 in Hyderabad, India, Satya Nadella finished his schooling at the Hyderabad Public School. Reminiscing about his early days, Nadella said that while growing up, playing cricket was his passion, and he played it competitively as a member of his school’s team. Nadella joined the Manipal Institute of Technology to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Communication. Nadella started his career at Sun Microsystems, before moving to Microsoft in 1992, where he joined as a Program Manager in the Windows Developer Relations group. Nadella had begun pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago, when Microsoft’s job offer came in. He decided to finish his degree while also taking up the Microsoft job — it took him two-and-a-half years to complete it.

I am here because we have unparalleled capability to make an impact.” Paraphrasing a quote from Oscar Wilde - we need to believe in the impossible and remove the improbable — he wrote, “This starts with clarity of purpose and sense of mission that will lead us to imagine the impossible and deliver it.” But, would Nadella, who attended Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet and earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from the Manipal University before coming to the U.S., be free to take forward his plans. The Wall Street Journal had some doubts. Gates’ return to the company in his new role “raises questions as to how free a hand Mr. Nadella will have in setting his own strategy as the company responds to an array of business challenges.”

‘One By Two’- a slice of urban life
I
t takes a while to figure out why this deliciously yummy concoction about urban aspirations is called One By Two. And it would be a crime more criminal than character assassination to tell you why the two main characters in the film never meet till the closing moments. This is a film that wears its heart on its sleeve. And it doesn’t roll up that sleeve when the narrative is endangered by uncomfortable twists of circumstances. Devika Bhagat loves her protagonists Samara and Amit, quirks, excesses, flatulence and all. The urban fable constructs Samara and Amit’s dreams as a spiral of frustrations. We really don’t expect these two people to come out triumphant at the end. And really, they don’t. What they

do is to connect themselves as very believable young people with dreams that seem to be picked out from the streets rather than man-
ufactured on a cinematic stage. One of them likes to pound the guitar. The other one loves to dance. She is on that crazy jour-
ney through the dance-reality show, the kind that Anushka Sharma embraced in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to fob off a housewife’s boredom. The dysfunctional girl Samara(effectively played by Preeti Desai)has serious dreams that seem driven more by her alcoholic mother’s frustrations. Indeed some of the film’s most effective dialogues and drama emerges in the mother and daughter scenes....Quite understandable when the mother is played by the ever-dependable Lilette Dubey. Abhay clocks up a very assured working-class hero’s character. He is bitter but not broken. Bewildered by the vagaries of life, but never unamused by the irony of it all. He is everyman, and yet special in his ordinariness. Irresistible in parts, One By Two never disappoints. — Subhash K. Jha

ormer chief Jersey City Municipal Judge Wanda Molina’s license to practice law has been suspended for six months by the state Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Ethics for “fixing” tickets for her “significant other.” Her license was suspended for “commission of a criminal act that reflects adversely on the attorney’s honesty, trustworthiness of fitness as a lawyer” and for “conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation,” according to the disciplinary order. In June 2010, Molina, 54, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty to tampering with public records or information, a third-degree offense, and falsifying records, a fourth-degree offense, before Superior Court Judge Harry G. Carroll in Bergen County. In August of that year, Carroll sentenced her to three years’

Molina resigned from her judgeship on September 21, 2007. As part of her sentence, she has been permanently barred from public employment in New Jersey. The Office of Attorney Ethics also ordered that the entire record of the disciplinary proceedings be made a permanent part off Molina’s file as an attorney at law in New Jersey. Finally, Molina has been ordered to reimburse the Disciplinary Oversight Committee for the administrative costs and expenses incurred in the prosecution of her discipline.

No Diwali holiday in Millburn schools: Hindus upset BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW JERSEY -The Hindu community is heartbroken over Millburn Township School District in New Jersey (USA) not including Diwali as a school holiday in its 2014-2015 school calendar despite representations made by its torchbearers. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (US), said that it was not fair with Hindu pupils and their families as they would have to attend school on their most popular festival while schools in the district were kept closed on the holy days of some other religions. Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that this injustice did not send a good signal to the impressionable minds of schoolchildren
and urged the district to immediately revise the already approved 2014-15 calendar and include Diwali, which fell on October 23 this year. He said that since Hindu families celebrated the festival of lights together, the children should not be deprived of any privileges at the school because of their absence on this day. Zed noted that awareness about the Hindu religion created by Diwali would make the Millburn pupils well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened future citizens, besides bringing about unity in the community. According to Rajan Zed, Diwali aimed at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives and symbolizing the victory of good over evil is also considered a harvest festival and even Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists also celebrate the
popular festival. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents. The Millburn Township School District in Millburn consists of seven schools and a preschool program with total about 4,925 pupils, including Millburn High, a national Blue Ribbon School. Jeffrey Waters and James Crisfield are board president and superintendent, respectively. Township of Millburn, incorporated in 1857, had reportedly one of the highest annual property tax bills in the state. Robert Tillotson and Timothy Gordon are Mayor and business administrator, respectively, of Millburn, whose notable residents include actress Anne Hathaway, actor John C. McGinley and hockey player Brian Rolston.

O N N E C T I C U T: T h e Connecticut police are asking people of Indian and Pakistani descent to take steps to protect themselves from break-ins, especially since in some cases the burglars appear to know when families are away from home. According to a press release issued by the Norwalk Police Department Detective Bureau, the department is noticing a rise in burglaries of Indian-American and Pakistani-American households by crooks who are well-organized and seem to be familiar with cultures from the Subcontinent. Gold jewelry, diamond jewelry and cash have been particular targets of the burglars. While burglaries cannot always be prevented, the department says it is possible to make homes less likely target. Some of the recommendations made by the department include not using social media sites to inform others of absence from home, always lock doors and windows, always activate the burglar alarm, even if it’s for a short time. The police also cited a recent home burglary on New Year’s Eve, where expensive electronic items were left behind. This is not the first time in the past few years that homes of Indian-Americans and Pakistani-Americans in Norwalk have been targeted by burglars.

‘White powder’ at hotels, post offices found to be harmless
E
BY A STAFF WRITER
AST RUTHERFORD (NJ) -- The suspicious white powdery substance delivered to at least six hotels just miles from MetLife Stadium is believed to be cornstarch.. Hazardous material (haz-mat) units, a bomb squad and law enforcement officers descended on five hotels in Lyndhurst, Rutherford, East Rutherford and Carlstadt and two postal offices located just miles from MetLife Stadium when suspicious white powder was found enclosed in envelopes. The discoveries on January 31 prompted a major law enforcement response and triggered a security scare two days before the stadium hosted the Super Bowl. Though investigators believe the off-white substance sent in envelopes is cornstarch, they’re awaiting final test results from county haz-mat officials. The FBI said the substance was deemed to be harmless. “The locations have been secured and initial field screening on the first samples has shown the substance to be within normal values,” a
statement from the FBI’s Newark division said. Additional tests would be conducted at a Trenton lab, but there were no reports of any illnesses from the letters. In Rutherford, Police Chief John Russo said officers were alerted around noon when an employee at the Renaissance Meadowlands Hotel saw an off-white powdery substance while opening mail. Authorities quickly quarantined the woman. “She was in good health the entire time and there was no need for medical attention,” he said. Emergency crews talked to the woman through a window during the investigation. The county’s hazardous materials team later confirmed the substance was cornstarch. “We got lucky in that it turned out to be nothing,” the chief said. Some hotel guests were evacuated on borough buses and brought to the nearby library to keep warm. Others on upper floors were told to stay in their rooms while the police secured the area. FBI agents took the letter and were handling the investigation. The police also tracked the letter back to a mail route and delivery driver at the Rutherford
post office, where authorities conducted another search. That investigation didn’t turn up any suspicious substances or letters. Similar reports emerged throughout the day in six towns near the Super Bowl site. Two suspicious letters were discovered at the Courtyard at Marriott and the Quality Inn in Lyndhurst. The letters were “isolated” and no one was exposed to any danger.. In Wood-Ridge, officials also found a white powdery substance believed to be cornstarch at the post office, according to the police. Wood-Ridge Mayor and State Senator Paul Sarlo said schools were operating normally, but officers were out to ensure a safe dismissal. The Police and emergency crews also tended to a report of a suspicious letter at the Hilton Hasbrouck Heights on Terrace Avenue and the EcnoLodge motel on Washington Avenue in Carlstadt, officials said. County haz-mat units began receiving reports of the letters around 11:45 a.m. Another letter was mailed to the 6th Avenue office of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the NYPD said. The letter was found to be harmless.

Charitable activities, informal monthly gatherings, spiritual discourses and Malayalam movies are some of its other activities. As part of its commitment to good citizenry and community relations, efforts are being made to increase area voluntary activities, including blood donations and feeding the poor. An Ohmkaram office-bearer said that despite being a small organization, it is determined to leave a large footprint in St. Louis.

AUTHOR CHARGED IN CAMPAIGN FINANCE CASE BY A STAFF WRITER
C
onservative author Dinesh D’Souza has been indicted on federal charges of violating campaign finance laws by using straw donors to funnel money to a US Senate candidate. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the grand jury charges in a statement on January 23. D’Souza, who has written over a dozen books imparting his provocative views on religion and politics, could not be reached for comment but his attorney, Benjamin Brafman, released a statement to reporters saying that D’Souza’s efforts to help a friend running for the Senate in 2012 was “at most” an “act of misguided friendship.” “Mr. D’Souza did not act with any corrupt or criminal intent whatsoever,” Brafman said in the statement. “He and the candidate have been friends since their college days, and “at worst, this was an act of misguided friendship by D’Souza. . .It is important to note that the indictment does not allege a corrupt relationship between D’Souza and the candidate.” The indictment did not name the Senate candidate in the case. But it appears to be Wendy Long (R), who lost overwhelmingly in 2012 to incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat. Long raised less than $1 million for her long-shot campaign. D’Souza, whose books include “The Roots of Obama’s Rage,” went to Dartmouth College with Long and his name was listed

Muslim Mosque, was sitting in the driver’s seat of the car on Springfield Avenue when he was shot around 11.30 am. on an invitation as co-hosting a fundraiser for Long during the campaign. Long, a former clerk to Supremc Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and D’Souza worked together on the Dartmouth Review, famous for its outspoken take on social and political topics. The indictment was the result of a routine review by the FBI of campaign filings with the FEC by various candidates after the 2012 election, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. “This office and the FBI take a zero tolerance approach to corruption of
the electoral process,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. “If, as alleged, the defendant directed others to make contributions to a Senate campaign and reimbursed them, that is a serious violation of federal campaign finance laws.” D’Souza, who now lives in San Diego, has long been a lightning rod for controversy. In his 2010 book on Obama, he theorizes that Obama is motivated largely by the “inherited rage” of his absent Kenyan father. The criminal charges, filed in U.S. District Court, allege that D’Souza in
2012 illegally reimbursed associates whom he asked to make donations valued at $20,000 to an unnamed Senate campaign. At the time, primary and general election campaign contributions to federal candidates were limited to $2,500 each from any individual to any single candidate. Those limits on candidate donations have been dramatically surpassed by the increasingly common practice of using nonprofit groups as a vehicle to make unlimited contributions to independent political committees. Recent court decisions have sanctioned and encouraged largedollar donations from individuals, unions and corporations, provided the funds are spent independently of a candidate’s official campaign. According to the indictment, D’Souza’s straw donor scheme caused the campaign committee to falsely report to the FEC the sources of its contributions. D’Souza was charged on January 23 with one count of making illegal campaign contributions, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison. He also is charged with one count of causing false statements to be made to the FEC, which carries a maximum of five years in prison. Straw-donor cases have been brought against prominent individuals from time to time. For example, in 2011, a prominent Los Angeles attorney, Pierce O’ Donnell, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of making $20,000 in donations to the presidential campaign of former Sen. John Edwards and reimbursing straw donors.

ctor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan will commence filming the yet-to-be-titled Tamil remake of recent Malayalam blockbuster Drishyam from the second half of 2014, says director Jeethu Joseph. Superstar Mohanlal-starrer Drishyam, which was helmed by Jeethu, released during Christmas weekend last year. It has emerged as the biggest hit in Malayalam filmdom. “Kamal sir has expressed interest to act in the Tamil remake of the film. We will start shooting from the second half of 2014. ‘Kamal sir has The rest of the cast expressed interest and crew will be finalized soon,” Jeethu, to act in the Tamil who will also direct remake of the film. the remake of the film We will start , told IANS in an shooting in second interview. half of 2014’ Drishyam, which is about a father’s effort to cover up a murder to protect his family, is still running to packed houses in Kerala as well as Tamil Nadu. The film is set to be remade in Telugu and Hindi. Daggubati Venkatesh will feature in its Telugu remake, which will be helmed by Sripriya, while the talks are on for the Hindi remake with a top star. Southern actress Meena, who essayed an important role of Mohanlal’s wife in Drishyam, is likely to be retained for the Tamil remake as well. Haasan is also set to soon start working on Tamil comedy Uthama.
‘Kochadaiiyaan next step in Indian cinema’ CHENNAI: After months of delay, superstar Rajinikanth’s Tamil period-drama Kochadaiiyaan is slated to release worldwide on April 11, and its director Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin views the film as the next step in Indian cinema. “Following last year’s celebrations of India’s film making centenary, we view the release of Kochadaiiyaan as part of the next step of Indian cinema. For the first time a full length feature has been made using performance capture technology in India and I truly hope this creates a whole alternate film making avenue apart from live action films,” Soundarya said in a statement. Kochadaiiyaan features the unique visual mastery of photo-realistic performance capture technology for the very first time in the history of an Indian film. It is releasing worldwide in cinemas April 11, 2014, added the statement. The film is an epic dramatization of good versus evil starring Rajinikanth in a
double role in a larger than life depiction. Also starring in the grand production is Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone with South India’s leading stars such as R. Sarath kumar, Nasser, Aadi Pinisetty, Shobana and Rukmini.

e was a legend in the Telugu film industry. But in real life, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, popularly known as ANR, was a humble man, says his son and Telugu superstar Nagarjuna. It would be near impossible to fill the gap created by the demise on January 22 of his 91-year-old father who won the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to cinema, Nagarjuna told IANS in a telephone interview. “My childhood was special because dad brought me a bicycle when I was small and I loved it,” Nagarjuna said in the interview, detailing his earliest memories of ANR. How do you differentiate between ANR the father and the star? “They were completely different. My father was a humble human being and a very disciplined actor,” Nag, as he is fondly known, said. Nag, 54, is

one of the top stars in Telugu cinema. He has so far acted in over 80 movies, mainly in Telugu. He has also starred in Hindi films including Shiva, LoC Kargil and Criminal. “I remember going to shoots with dad, with my brother and sister,” recalled Nag with a deep sigh. “It was his aura and presence that moved me every time he would walk into a room... He was my best guide.” ANR played a critical role once Nag decided to plunge into the movie industry, giving him many invaluable tips. Even as a busy actor, Nag pined for his father’s company. In a career spanning seven decades, he was the undisputed emperor of the Telugu film industry. But despite the dizzying success, he never lost links with Ramapuram in Andra Pradesh where he was born. He won several accolades inlcuding the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1991) and Padma Vibhushan (2011).
t’s brave on the part of producer-turned-actor VTV Ganesh to play the lead in a film which is more or less a semi-autobiography based on events from his own life. It is not because Ganesh plays the lead that Inga Enna Solludhu is unarguably boring, but because it is a shoddily written story that fails to entertain. Ganesh occupies the frame from the opening scene and with little honesty he proves that this project is very dear to him. But all this hardly matters to people who pay and watch a film for the sake of entertainment. En
route to Chennai in a car, Ganesh shares his story with the driver played by Santhanam. He talks about how he started his career as a bartender and went on to do multiple jobs before getting an opportunity to turn producer. If not every detail, most of this story could have been taken from
Ganesh’s life but the way it is narrated hardly makes one root for the protagonist. Ganesh casts most of his industry friends in small roles in the film, and because of that we get to see some bad performances. Even the likes of Santhanam and Simbu aka Silambarasan (a popular Tamil actor) don’t appeal because their roles are equally bad. Meera Jasmine and Andrea are merely used to fill in the shoes of weak characters. Initially, we see a strong Meera standing up against a drunk cab driver who tries to misbehave with her but later we see her marry Ganesh for reasons never explained in the film. Likewise, we are never told how Ganesh and Simbu know each other and they appear in a scene out of the blue. Inga Enna Solludhu is a story you feel sorry for. It’s a film that makes a success story look like a joke on screen. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

Humiliation continues for Men in Blue After a dismal performance in South Africa, Kiwis beat India by 87 runs in the final ODI to hand over another series defeat to India IANS, WELLINGTON
A
comprehensive performance from New Zealand fired them to a 87-run win over India in the fifth and final One-Day International (ODI), clinching the series 4-0 at the Westpac Stadium here on January 31. A consecutive century by Ross Taylor powered the hosts to 303/5 in their 50 overs after being put in to bat. But the visitors could only manage 216 and were bowled out with two balls to spare. Pacer Matt Henry impressed on debut, taking 4/38 in 10 overs. The loss meant India lost their second overseas series in a row after going down in South Africa. The hosts struggled at the start against pacers Mohammed Shami
(1/61) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/48). But New Zealand came back strongly, backed by a 152-run thirdwicket partnership between Kane Williamson (88) and Taylor (102) which took them beyond the 300mark. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to field first seemed like it was bearing fruit as Shami and Bhuvneshwar made up for their poor show at Hamilton. Shami bowled

Tiger Woods enthrals Indian fans in Delhi IANS, NEW DELHI
W
orld No.1 golfer Tiger Woods played the full 18 holes at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) on January 4 carding an unbelievable nine under during an exhibition game to enthral fans. To put things in perspective, Mohammad Siddikur of Bangladesh finished with a total of 14 under 274 at the same course when he won the Indian Open crown. Only select media personnel and DGC members were invited to the private event organized by the Hero Group and the World Sports Group (WSG). Woods, who reportedly received $2.2 million for the appearance, played with Hero MotoCorp MD and CEO Pawan Munjal and some select invitees for most of the time.

He was later joined by Indian golf stars Shiv Kapur and Anirban Lahiri who played the last three holes. “Thanks so much for the time, it was an absolute blast. It is hard to say how much fun I had today. It was a narrow golf course and I was
nervous with my tee shot. My best buddy Arjun (Atwal) told me so much about India and I am happy to be here. Thank You so much,” Woods told reporters. Among the guests were former India cricketers Madan Lal and Murali Karthik. The American golfer arrived here Monday from Dubai, where he took part in the Dubai Desert Classic, and was whisked away from the VIP area at the airport amidst tight security. Meanwhile, the general public was left a little aggrieved by the privacy of the event. Many had wanted to get a glimpse of the sport’s most popular figure “A few days back I had heard the news that Tiger Woods would be coming to Delhi. Later I found out that this was a members only event but I still came here hoping to see him,” golf enthusiast Varun Bapna told IANS.
Super Bowl Sunday halts US ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
merica came to a virtual standstill on February 2 to watch the year’s biggest sporting event — Super Bowl, a game of American style football — much like the sub-continent does to watch a cricket match between India and Pakistan. From President Barack Obama down, fans prepared for days for “Super Bowl Sunday” to watch the 48th annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American football, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
But the game isn’t anything like the football played in the rest of the world as two teams of eleven players, each dressed in helmets and thick shoulder pads, try to advance an oval ball down the field by running with or passing it. Originating from the sport of rugby football, the first game of American football was said to have been played on Nov 6, 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton. Obama celebrated the Super Bowl by having the White House tweet a picture of him throwing a football. He also gave his sixth traditional Super Bowl Sunday interview telecast during Fox News’s pre-
eight beautiful boundaries and a huge six. Once the 23-year-old got caught at point while trying a square drive, Taylor took control of the innings. Taylor hit 10 boundaries and a six to reach his 10th ODI century before being the last wicket to fall. After the initial few overs, the Indian bowlers struggled once more with only part-time bowler Virat Kohli (1/36) averaging below six per over. All other Indian bowlers leaked runs with only Aaron taking two wickets (2/60). India started the chase poorly and crawled to 20 for two in the first 10 overs, allowing the run rate to increase right from the start. Both openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan struggled. Kohli again provided the fireworks with his knock of 82 . His fifth wicket 67-run partnership with Dhoni revived hopes of India chasing down the stiff total.
DAVIS CUP: India whitewash Chinese Taipei INDORE: Indian tennis players Saketh Myneni and Yuki Bhambri won their respective reverse singles matches in straight sets to whitewash Chinese Taipei 5-0 in their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie here on February 2. The hosts had already sealed their progression to Round 2 by winning the doubles rubber on January 1 taking an unassailable 3-0 lead. Myneni and Bhambri clinched the dead rubbers to make a clean-sweep of the contest. India rested Somdev Devvarman, who played a tiring five-setter on Janu-
game show. About 48 million Americans were expected to order takeout or delivery food from a restaurant instead of cooking at home, according to ABC7SB TV citing the National Restaurant Association. Tickets for the inaugural Super Bowl were sold for $6 but the price increases have outpaced inflation and the face value for tickets this year ranged between $500 and $2,600. For the record, what was expected to be very competitive game with Obama predicting a 24-21 score for the winner of the match, though he was careful not to take sides, turned out to be a totally one sided affair. ‘Designing menswear
can be fun’ One can play around a lot of variety in male costumes, says Dubai-based Indian-origin designer Varoin Marwah NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI
C
ontrary to the belief that designing menswear has limited options and one can just experiment with restricted cuts and patterns, Dubai-based Indian-origin designer Varoin Marwah says one can play around a lot of variety in male costumes. “It’s a myth when people say that menswear designs are very limited. If one looks at it, (the) same holds true for women. It is one and the same thing, but if we can play differently with womenswear lines why can’t we also do so for men’s clothing,” Marwah told IANS in an interview. The designer recently showcased at India Resortwear Fashion Week 2014, his debut on the Indian runway. His designs reflected the romantic side of men in the forms of shorts and jackets in bright pastels. Marwah said that his collection gave a fair idea to all those men who want to dress up differently for holidays and parties. “There were varieties of shorts with jackets in my collection and that’s exactly what I wanted to introduce to the market. I want to give a message to all those men who think that they can’t walk

out in shorts and jackets. Such outfits can also look glamorous if worn differently,” he added. The inspiration behind the collection was also unique. “This collection almost took me three months and it started while I was holidaying in the Caribbean, where I saw romantic couples who were just having a great time. I just noticed that there is a need for men to realize that they also need to dress up for the occasion. With this line, I just wanted to show the softer side of men,” he said. A graduate of New Delhi’s JD School of Fashion Design, he started designing at the age of 18 and has modelling experience for various wellknown designers such as Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra and Tarun Tahiliani. le areas one step at a time. Key protein helpful for leukemia therapy
Healthy sleep helps ward off depression A recent study has revealed a link between sleep duration and depression IANS, WASHINGTON

on’t sleep deprive yourself as it may be a precursor for major depression as you reach adulthood — occurring before other symptoms of major depression and additional mood disorders hit you hard. A genetic study of adult twins and a community-based study of
adolescents has reported novel links between sleep duration and depression. Both short and excessively long sleep durations appear to activate genes related to depressive symptoms. “We were surprised that the heritability of depressive symptoms in twins with very short sleep was nearly twice the heritability in twins sleeping normal amounts of time,” said Nathaniel Watson, associate pro-

fessor of neurology and co-director of the University of Washington Medicine Sleep Center in Seattle. This new research emphasizes that we can make an investment in our health by prioritizing sleep, added M. Safwan Badr, president, American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sleeping six hours or less per night increases the risk for major depression, which, in turn, increases the risk for decreased sleep among adolescents, said the study. Optimizing sleep may be one way to maximize the effectiveness of treatments for depression such as psychotherapy. “Healthy sleep is a necessity for physical, mental and emotional well-being,” said Badr.

NEW YORK: In a ray of hope for leukemia patients, a protein critical to hematopoietic stem cell function— that give rise to all other blood cells — and blood formation has been identified. The finding has potential as a new target for treating leukemia because cancer stem cells rely upon the same protein to regulate and sustain their growth, said researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. “A protein called Lis1 fundamentally regulates asymmetric division of hematopoietic stem cells, assuring that the stem cells correctly differentiate to provide an adequate, sustained supply of new blood cells,” said principal investigator Tannishtha Reya from department of pharmacology. Reya said the findings shed new light
on the fundamental regulators of cell growth both in normal development and in cancer. “Our work shows that elimination of Lis1 potently inhibits cancer growth, and identifies Lis1 and other regulators of protein inheritance as a new class of molecules that could be targeted in cancer therapy,” he explained. The findings appeared in the journal Nature Genetics.
Vitamins may blunt endurance training
OSLO: An alarming study suggests that high doses of vitamin C and E supplements may blunt the improvement of muscular endurance by disrupting cellular adaptions in exercised muscles. “Our results indicate that high dosages of vitamin C and E - as commonly found in supplements - should be used with caution especially if you are undertaking
endurance training,” alerted Goran Paulsen from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo. As vitamin C and E supplements are widely used, understanding if they interfere with cellular and physiological adaptations to exercise is of interest to people exercising for health purposes as well as to athletes. “Our research found that vitamin C and E supplements blunted the endurance train-
Your week ahead... Aries Keep the faith with the house, flat, family, household, home town or homeland goal. Jupiter is going backwards which is why nothing is moving forwards, yet the trine to Chiron on Wednesday should still give you hope.
Taurus If there is one area of your life which has been flakey and fuzzy for a year or two, it’s the business of friendship. Of course, when your friend is also part of a group business project, you can crank up the potential for confusion.
Gemini Your ruler Mercury is retrograde in Pisces from Thursday so it’s pretty clear that your career is unclear! You can substitute university life or charity work if that’s your calling instead.
Cancer Halfway through last year something very new rose up in front of you. Since then the continent keeps going under water just when you think you’re ready to go even further. How very frustrating.
Leo Halfway through last year you came across something very new and extremely positive. It involved you ducking out of sight and taking a back seat. Alternatively it involved a confidential project with classified information.
Virgo Virgo, the sight of both Chiron and Mercury Retrograde in Pisces, your opposite sign, paints a most unusual picture of your opposition. Alternatively we are talking about your partner who is on the other side of the scales from you.

(February 6-12) Libra You will have soaring success within four weeks, making March, April, May, June and July memorable for all sorts of good reasons. One of them is the sheer vindication of your faith.
Scorpio You must be wondering if you were mad to put so much energy and time into another country or culture; a spiritual endeavour; a book. Actually you were right and this process you have experienced is part of your eventual success.
Sagittarius Chiron and Mercury Retrograde are in your zone of the home. This covers your house or apartment. Alternatively we are talking about your homeland or home town. If you can’t identify your home, then this is the story this week.
Capricorn Capricorn, about halfway through last year you were thrown an opportunity involving your former, current or potential partner. Perhaps an enemy or opponent too, strangely enough.
Aquarius It’s quite clear that a substantial business, money, property or charity decision is pending. See how long you can put off the final judgement call, though. Mercury will be retrograde in this zone of your chart from Thursday.
Pisces Pisces, even though nothing really substantial has happened with the children, or a youth project, what occurs near Wednesday should give you reason to keep hoping (and trying). —Jessica Adams
