Officials want to restrict the hours of operation for the city’s 154 liquor establishments that fall outside the designated hotspots in a continued effort to curb violence. “Some of the surrounding municipalities such as Passaic and Haledon close at 2 am.” said Andre Sayegh, 6th Ward councilman, briefly discussing the ordinance. The city’s bars and liquor stores are currently required to close at 3 am. Sayegh said the administration was attempting to bar trouble-makers from neighboring towns from coming to the city for an additional hour of revelry. Other council members didn’t buy the explanation. “Nobody gets out of a bar at 2 am and runs to Paterson for a halfhour,” asserted Julio Tavarez, 5th Ward councilman. Otherwise, he said, this ordinance would result in exacerbating the issue. “This is the same thing as prohibition,” said Tavarez. He said early closing will simply open up an illegal option. “If we close earlier, the after-hours will open earlier,” concurred
Anthony Davis, 1st Ward councilman. The ordinance will not impact alcoholserving businesses already restricted to close at 12 midnight in hotspot locations. Out of the 197 alcoholic beverage licenses, 12 are pocket licenses (not being utilized at any locations), 31 operate in hotspot locations, and 154 are scattered throughout the city. “I see the fact that we’re open to three o’clock as a competitive advantage for our city,” said Tavarez. ecurity in the Asia-Pacific region must depend on international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, not on “intimidation”, US President Barack Obama said on November 15 ahead of the G20 summit here, media reported. Addressing students in Brisbane, Obama emphasized that Asia’s security must be based on mutual alliances and big nations must not bully smaller ones, according to a BBC report. “We believe... that any effective security order for Asia must be based not on spheres of influence, coercion or intimidation, where big nations bully the small, but on alliances for mutual security, international law and... the peaceful resolution of disputes,” Obama was quoted as saying. He warned of the dangers posed by territorial disputes in the South China Sea, where Beijing’s perceived assertiveness has raised concern among its neighbors. Nadella restructured Microsoft that has been struggling with the declining market in personal computers to focus on cloud services and mobile technology while cutting jobs and company expenses, Tech Times reported. The effort has resulted in stock surges with Microsoft now the second most valuable company in the world, it said. In May, the total market value of Microsoft was $343.8bn but it shares closed at $49.58 on November 14, giving it a corresponding market value of $408.7 billion, exceeding that of Exxon’s which has fallen by more than six percent because of plummeting oil

In the mobile industry, people refer to the company’s Surface tablets as “iPads” and even “knockoff iPads,” it noted. Senate blocks reform to limit NSA spying WASHINGTON: The US Senate has blocked a move to put an end to the mass storage of telephone data by the National Security Agency (NSA), a measure that had the support of the White House and was a direct consequence of leaks by Edward Snowden. The controversial reform, called the USA Freedom Act, fell short by two votes of the required 60 to move forward on the Senate floor, with all the Republican caucus against it, except four senators, including Ted Cruz from Texas. A new rectified text incorporating those concerns reached the Senate this summer and obtained support from President Obama and leading technology companies, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union.
S President Barack Obama has ordered a review of the policies in place to respond to the kidnapping of US citizens abroad, the White House has confirmed. Obama on November 18 ordered the appropriate authorities — including the Defense and State Departments, the FBI and the intelligence community — to conduct a “comprehensive review of the US government policy on overseas terrorist-related hostage cases, with specific emphasis on examining family engagement, intelligence collection and diplomatic engagement policies”, National Security Council
spokesman Alistar Baskey said in a statement. The news of the policy review coincided with the report of Peter Kassig the murder of Peter Kassig, the third American to be beheaded by the Islamic State Sunni radical group. A video has been circulating online purporting to show members of the IS group beheading several Syrian soldiers and a US aid worker. The footage showed the beheading of a captured American aid worker Kassig.

he G20 Summit concluded here on November 16 with its leaders endorsing India’s concerns over black money, while promising a new global transparency standard that will modernize international tax rules and allow automatic exchange of related information between governments to curb illicit outflow of money estimated at over $1 trillion annually.
Repatriation of black money, BRICS bank key priorities: Modi BRISBANE: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the repatriation of black money kept abroad was a key priority and called for “close coordination” on the issue during an informal meeting of the five-nation BRICS leaders here ahead of the G20. The prime minister told the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa that “repatriation of unaccounted money kept abroad is a key priority for us”, according to tweets posted by the external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. Modi also said that BRICS should set 2016 as the target for the inauguration of the BRICS Bank. The ministry of external affairs, tweeting about the speech, wrote: “At BRICS meet ahead of G-20 PM @narendramodi calls for ‘Close coordination on unaccounted money kept abroad’.” “Unaccounted money abroad is also linked to security challenges PM @narendramodi ahead of G-20 Summit in Brisbane,” said the MEA tweet. In his departure statement on November 11 before leaving on his tour to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji, the prime minister had said that he will highlight the importance of global cooperation against black money at the G20, which kicks off here on November 15.
India, being represented at the summit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, immediately called this development an unprecedented success, and said the next step will be the delivery of an action plan, along with the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The two forums represent 44 countries and 90 per cent of the world economy. “We are taking actions to ensure the fairness of the international tax system and to secure countries’ rev-
enue bases. Profits should be taxed where economic activities deriving the profits are performed and where value is created,” the G20 leaders said in a joint communique at the end of the eighth summit, promising to finalize work by end-2015. This was precisely what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had specifically said and sought during a session on “Delivering Global Economic Resilience” on the second day of the summit in this west Australian city, while also wanting

India, Oz agree on security cooperation CANBERRA: India and Australia marked a new synergy in bilateral relations as they agreed on a framework for security cooperation to boost defense, civil nuclear and economic ties even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended a hectic five-day, fourcity visit. The two countries signed five agreements, including one on exchange of sentenced prisoners, while Modi also addressed the Australian parliament. On November 18, Modi spoke in English — to the media in Canberra after talks with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott, in parliament, while addressing business honchos in Melbourne.

n a replay of the crowd and the euphoria at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was Monday cheered lustily by an over 16,000-strong gathering of the Indian diaspora at Sydney’s Allphones Arena, where he promised to fulfill their expectations of a resurgent India. Modi, who arrived from Brisbane earlier in the day after attending the G20 summit meeting, spoke for an hour at the Allphones Arena where people wore T-shirts with Modi photos emblazoned on them. Hundreds of fans had arrived by the “Modi Express” train from Melbourne in the morning. To deafening chants of “Modi, Modi” interrupting his speech, the prime minister, attired in a white kurta pyjama with a blue sleeveless jacket to match, also promised the diaspora visa on arrival and merging of the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards by January. Speaking in Hindi, Modi said there was no reason for India to lag behind any longer. “Do you believe that the country can rise again, become powerful and capable of helping other countries again,” he asked to loud cheers from the crowd. “I don’t see any reason for the country to remain behind, fate has decided that it must progress,” he said to wild cheers. Organizers of the event had said Modi’s address at the Allphones Arena would rival the Madison Square Garden address on September 27 where too he had received an ecstatic
welcome from an over 16,000-strong gathering of Indian diaspora. “Overwhelmed, honored and humbled. Will never forget this day,” is how Modi tweeted later. Modi also spoke of the schemes launched by his government, including the Clean India and Make in India programs, and invited the diaspora to join in the Swachh Bharat campaign and contribute towards building toilets in their villages back home in India. He said that today, people, including industrialists, are participating in the Clean India mission. “I salute them.” He said that on the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 2019, “the least we can do for Mahatma Gandhi is have a clean India”. Modi said it would give a fillip to tourism in the country, besides improving the lives of the poor. “It took 28 years for an Indian PM to make the few hours journey to Australia. Now you will not have to wait 28 years,” he said, referring to the shared values of democracy, and the love for cricket that India and Australia share. Earlier, during his meeting with businesspersons in Queensland, Modi told them that Queensland can be an important partner in India’s development. At the breakfast meet hosted by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, Modi proposed that businesspersons can participate in his government’s Clean Ganga program and also suggested that India can import LNG from Queensland. He said he was pleased that Queensland will be participating in ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit in 2015 to showcase its infrastructure.

Modi later tweeted that he was “touched by enthusiasm of the Indian community!” and posted a picture of the venue where the statue was unveiled.
“Mahatma Gandhi is as relevant today as he was in his lifetime,” Modi said at the function, beginning his bilateral engagements in Australia after the conclusion of the G20 summit. He noted how the organizer of the event, Hemant Nayak, recalled that Modi was keen on having the statue installed even from the days when he had not yet become the chief minister of Gujarat. He thanked Nayak for correcting the perception that some people had, that he had begun to mention Mahatma Gandhi only after becoming prime

Addressing a gathering of the Indian-Australian community at the venue, the prime minister said, “On October 2 (1869), a person was not born in Porbandar, but an era was born”, referring to the Mahatma. He referred to the problems of global warming and terrorism that had been discussed in the just-concluded G20 summit at Brisbane, and said Gandhi’s life gives us the answers. “When Mahatma Gandhi stayed at Sabarmati Ashram, the river was full of water. Yet even (during) that time, he scolded people for wasting water. “Mahatma Gandhi always showed us that we have no right to do exploit nature,” he said.

IN BRIEF 2002 riots: Nanavati panel submits report AHMEDABAD: After 12 years and 24 extensions, the two-member Nanavati-Mehta Commission of Enquiry submitted its much-awaited final report on the 2002 Godhra train carnage and the subsequent communal riots, here on November 18. The commission submitted the report to Chief Minister Anandiben Patel at her residence. The report delved into the killing of 59 passengers in the ill-fated Sabarmati Express near Godhra station in 2002, followed by riots in many parts of Gujarat — killing 1169 people — ranked among the worst in India’s post-Independence history.
Adarsh scam: Plea to drop Chavan rejected MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has rejected a plea by the CBI to remove the name of former chief minister Ashok Chavan from the list of accused in the Adarsh Society scam case. Justice M.L. Tahiliyani gave the ruling on the revision application of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the agency’s earlier plea on the same was rejected by a Special CBI Court in January, said Ashish Mehta, a lawyer who had earlier represented the petitioner in the case. The ruling could prove to be a major setback to Chavan as he will have to face trial as an accused.
Arora, who is also in charge of the party’s Kashmir affairs, said Kashmiris would feel more secure if the BJP was voted to power in the country’s only Muslim-majority state. “Kashmiris need to vote en masse for the BJP. Our party will end administrative, police, bureaucratic and political injustice in Jammu and Kashmir.” Trying to play down the controversy over article 370, Arora said
the BJP favored a debate and discussion on the issue. “We will take people into confidence and assess its merits and demerits to the state and proceed accordingly.” Arora said a debate over this provision was a “serious issue and we (BJP) won’t take any vague decision. “We will take the aspirations of all regions of Jammu and Kashmir into account while dealing with
this issue.” The BJP has traditionally opposed article 370, saying it was coming in the way of Jammu and Kashmir’s complete integration with the rest of India. The BJP manifesto for the 2014 Lok Sabha election reiterated its stand on the article and said it “will discuss this with all stakeholders and remains committed to (its) abrogation”.

Rampal continued to evade arrest even as hundreds of his followers left his ashram here in Haryana. Police sources said that Rampal and private army of volunteers were holding followers hostage inside the premises. District authorities said that over 10,000 people, who were inside the ashram complex for the past few days, started leaving early Wednesday after a portion of a 20-foot high wall of the ashram complex was brought down. Though the ashram management claimed that Rampal was not inside the complex, Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) S.N. Vashisht said that Rampal was hiding inside.

‘IS 7 times bigger than Western estimates’ CIA and US intelligence agencies may only have been speaking about “core” fighters in estimating the jihadis’ numbers, says a report IANS, LONDON
T
he West may have severely underestimated the strength of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical organization, which may have raised an army of at least 200,000 fighters, a Kurdish leader has claimed. This number is seven to eight times more than Western intelligence estimates of up to 31,500 fighters, said Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of Kurdish President Massoud Barzani, in an exclusive interview to The Independent on November 16. Hussein speculates that the CIA and US intelligence agencies may only have been speaking about “core” fighters in estimating the jihadis’ numbers. The Kurdish leader said that the ability of the IS to attack on many widely separated fronts in Iraq and Syria at the same time is proof of its swelling numbers. “They are fighting in Kobani,” said Hussein. “In Kurdistan last month, they conducted assaults in seven different places as well as in Ramadi (the capital of the Anbar province, west of Baghdad) and

This is held to give the jihadis a large pool of potential recruits. “I am talking about hundreds of thousands of fighters, because they are able to mobilize young Arab men in the territory that they have taken,” Hussein was quoted as say-
ing. The huge numbers of the IS underlines that it will be difficult to eliminate it even with U.S. airstrikes. The US and its allies are now beginning to take on board the obstacles to fulfilling President Obama’s pledge to degrade and destroy the IS. The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Airstrikes in Pakistan kill six suspected militants ISLAMABAD: At least six suspected militants, including an alleged key commander, were killed in military airstrikes carried out in Pakistan on November 18. Military jets targeted suspected militant hideouts in Malikdin Khel area of Khyber tribal region’s Tirah valley, Dawn online reported. The identity of the commander killed in the strikes is yet to be ascertained. Khyber is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous regions governed by tribal laws and lies near the Afghan border. The latest development came amidst
operation ‘Khyber-1’ which was launched by the military last month on credible information about the presence of militants in parts of Sipah and Akkakhel areas. Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-i-Islam has had a strong presence in the areas being targeted in the operation. Suu Kyi demands reforms in Myanmar NAY PYI TAW: US President Barack Obama and Myanmarese opposition leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on November 14 demanded reforms in the Myanmar constitution to allow “free and transparent” elections for a fully representative democracy. Obama called for “inclusive” changes in the constitution before general elections scheduled for 2015. The constitution of Myanmar, Aun San Suu Kyi once known as Burma, prevents Suu Kyi from running for president because she was married to a foreigner and her children have British nationality. Suu Kyi said she was confident that negotiations would bring reforms demanded by the society. Obama met with Myanmarese President Thein Sein in Nay Pyi Taw and highlighted the changes in the country since the military junta transferred most powers to a civilian government. The changes emphasized by the US president included the releasing of political prisoners.

‘Bangladesh facing increased terror risk’ DHAKA: Bangladesh faces the risk of a substantial rise in terrorist activities in the future, according to a study by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a media report said on November 18. According to the “Global Terror Index”, almost 10,000 terrorist attacks were recorded in 2013, representing a 44 percent increase over the 2012 figures, the IEP said on its website.
These attacks have resulted in 17,958 deaths, representing a 61 percent increase over the previous year’s numbers. The study also noted that 24 countries experienced more than 50 deaths in 2013, increasing 60 percent from 15 deaths in 2012. The research also observed that the world not only witnessed intensified terror last year, but saw it spreading as well. The Global Terror Index, launched by the IEP in 2012, ranks countries by the impact of terrorist activities, apart from analysing the economic and social dimensions associated with terrorism. The index scores 162 countries, covering 99.6 percent of world’s population, and examines trends from 2000.

Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was involved in betting. The report, however, gave a clean chit to Srinivasan on both counts of spot fixing and betting. While exonerating Meiyappan of spot fixing charges, the committee said he was involved in betting. Meiyappan was marked as individual 1 in the report. The committee, which marked Srinivasan as individual 13 in its report, said in its conclusions: “This individual (Srinivasan) is not involved with match fixing activity”, and “This individual was not found to be involved in scuttling the investigations in match fixing”. However, the report said Srinivasan and the four officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were aware of the violation of the Players’ Code of Conduct by a player marked as individual 3 but they did not act against him.

It was a very good preparation by Carlsen and his team, who introduced a new idea and the game quickly fizzled out into a dull position which Carlsen held very easily," World No.7 and Grandmaster Anish Giri summed up. Playing white, Anand opened the game pushing his queen pawn two squares. The game progressed to what is technically called Queen's Gambit Declined.
Making his moves pretty fast, Carlsen made it clear that he was well prepared in this line. "Carlsen played one of the rare lines in the main line with the move Re8 on his 9th move," Indian Grandmaster P. Harikrishna told IANS.
Difficult to get into rhythm in Abu Dhabi: Nico Hulkenburg
The committee, which marked Srinivasan as “Individual 13” in its report, said in its conclusions: “This individual (Srinivasan) is not involved with match-fixing activity.”
“This individual (Srinivasan) along with four other BCCI officials was aware of the violation of the Players’ Code of Conduct by individual 3, but no action was taken against individual 3 by any of the aforesaid officials who were aware of this infraction,” the report said in its conclusion about the BCCI president. ABU DHABI: Force India driver Nico Hulkenburg on November 17 said, ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that the Yas Marina Circuit here is a difficult track to get into rhythm as it has long straights followed by tight corners. “Abu Dhabi is a nice venue. The
racing looks really cool on TV as the day turns into night and the track is pretty challenging for us in the car as well. The light is not really an issue once you are in the cockpit but the layout makes it very easy to make mistakes and lose time, especially in qualifying,” Hulkenburg, who earned four points at last weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, said. Going into the season-ending race, Hulkenburg has 80 points and is now ninth in the drivers’ standings. “It was nice to be back on the pace in Brazil and hopefully we will have similar pace in Abu Dhabi. It has been a great year for everyone in the team.”

etting a boost after his world record 264 against Sri Lanka in an ODI here, Indian opener Rohit Sharma said a couple of failures would not stop his cricket. The 27-yearold, who made his ODI debut for India in 2007, has been in and out of the team as he failed to maintain consistency. In the past, he has often struggled in the middle. However, after his swashbuckling display, Sharma was brimming with confidence. "You have to accept the failure and success and you keep moving on. That's what I've done. A couple of overseas failures will not stop my cricket. My cricket and my
hard work will still remain on the track. I will keep working as hard as ever." Sharma said as a youngster, he never expected to play such an innings or smash records. "All the records happen along the way. I probably need to work harder, and from here on the expectation would be more. I feel I have a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders," said Sharma, after becoming the highest ODI scorer in an innings. Meanwhile, skipper Virat Kohli led from the front with a smashing unbeaten century to guide his team to a three-wicket win in the fifth and final ODI in Ranchi, clean-sweeping the series 5-0.
FUZHOU (CHINA)/NEW DELHI: Leading Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal clinched the women’s singles crown of the $700,000 China Open Super Series Premier but compatriot Kidambi Srikanth grabbed all the headlines by pulling off the biggest upset of his career when he beat two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan to win the men’s singles title in Fuzhou on November 16. While sixth seeded Saina won her second Super Series title of 2014 by overcoming Japanese Akane Yamaguchi 21-12, 22-20 in 42 minutes, Srikanth stunned the five-time World Champion Chinese 21-19, 21-17 in 46 minutes at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center. Srikanth on the eve of the summit clash said that it was his childhood dream to play ‘Super’ Dan in a final, that too in his own backyard. He not only fulfilled his dream but went one step better by ousting the legendary Chinese in straight
games to earn his first win in three outings against Dan. Srikanth, ranked No.16 in the world, took off well and fast by going into a 9-4 lead in the first game. However, Dan, in his usual style, took time to get into his rhythm to close the gap at 15-all. The 21-year-old Hyderabadi, just like the first game, came out with his best strokes just when it mattered most to clinch six of the next eight points and earn the biggest win of his career. “Great wins! It is fantastic for both of them and Indian badminton. For Srikanth, it was a big match and at the end of it he kept his nerve to earn the big win. Overall, he has played some high level badminton,” said chief national coach Pullela Gopichand.
Sixth seeded Saina Nehwal won her second Super Series title of 2014 by overcoming Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.

‘Thirudan Police’- the wonders comedy can do
L
ately, it’s almost impossible to find a Tamil film without comedy. Even if someone makes a full length action film, you’re forced to laugh at a few places for reasons even the filmmaker can’t explain. But not all filmmakers succeed in using comedy to their strength, but there are exceptions like Nalan Kumarasamy, Karthik Subbaraj, who know exactly how to use it in their films without diluting the core subject. Debutant Caarthick Raju deserves to be included that list for
Film: “Thirudan Police”; Cast: Dinesh, Iyshwarya Rajesh, Rajesh, Rajendran, John Vijay, Bala Saravanan, Nithin Satya, Naren; Director: Caarthick Raju; Rating: ***1/2 proving how comedy when used the way it’s supposed to be used can make a lot of difference to the story. Caarthick’s Thirudan Police is the story about a father (a police constable) and son (Vishwa, a wastrel), their relationship, whose importance the latter only realizes
quite late in life. It’s also a thriller, about the hunt for the killer of the father, who gets killed while on duty. When Vishwa slips into the shoes of his father, literally, after he’s given his job, he starts missing him and realizes all that he did for the family. In another beautiful scene, the hero’s friend, who is tired of listening to him yap about his dead father, asks him why he only talks about his dad at night and never during the day. Vishwa, innocently, replies that he’s seen his father come home usually at night.

t a time when Bollywood is making biopics on sports personalities, tennis star Sania Mirza says she doesn’t want her life to be seen on the big screen as she is a private person in real life. Sania doesn’t want to share the details of her life for a biopic but says that if anything along the lines of her biopic would happen in the future, she’d like Deepika Padukone to play her role. “I’m a private person. I don’t want a film to be made on me because I don’t want to share my intimate details. I’m not that kind of a person, and I have got offers for a biopic previously but I have said no,” she said on the sidelines of the National Children’s Film Festival (NCFF), organized by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). “But if someone puts me on the spot and I have to choose, then I would want Deepika Padukone to play my role,” she added. Salman's father Salim Khan, mother Salma, brothers Arbaaz, Sohail and other family members received the baraat and blessed the
couple, who exchanged garlands. The rituals were followed by a party, where Salman, his step-mother Helen, sister-in-law Malaika Arora Khan performed to some popular numbers. Punjabi singers Mika and Yo Yo Honey Singh livened up the party. Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Karan Johar were among top stars from Bollywood who attended the marriage. ‘Kill Dil’ — insipid guns-and-romance curry Film: “Kill Dil”; Cast: Govinda, Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra; Director: Shaad Ali; Rating: **1/2
K
ill Dil is one of those misfired gun shots of masala cinema that reads like a fun fest on paper. I am sure everyone must have ROFL (Ranveer’s semi-illiterate character doesn’t know what ROFL means, teehee) while shooting and enacting the scenes and even before that there must have loads of laughter while reading the script. In principle these unprincipled characters who live and die by the gun must have seemed interesting. On screen Kill Dil is as flat as the midriff that Ranveer loves to flaunt whenever the script permits. Not that the script here is too particular about what goes and what doesn’t. This is a free-for-all guns-andromance spree where Gulzar Saab’s poetry slyly meets Ranveer Singh’s buffoonery. Half-way down the narration you realize director Shaad Ali has run out of designer-cool tricks. Enough of those chic shots of our two heroes riding down busy highways gunning for unsuspecting victims. Yes, our heroes Dev and Tutu are assassins. You could’ve fooled me! They look like a couple of petty pickpockets. But God and the screen writers(three of them, actually....what’s that they say about

ideas. This is Jai and Veeru from Sholay without Jai clambering on Veeru’s shoulder on the motorbike. They sing together but the lyrics are about assassination and jubilation. Yash Raj films had gone into a similar turbulent territory of dosti versus love in the recent Gunday. Ranveer who played one of the two buddies in the earlier film as well, is far more entertaining here. He’s still way over the top. But here he is hammy in a pleasant way. Trouble starts and the killings for him end when Ranveer’s character Dev falls in love with the neighborhood femme fatale.

Katrina Kaif to miss her X-mas vacation this year MUMBAI: Katrina Kaif usually takes time off around Christmas. Last year, she had reportedly spent the holiday season in New York with her alleged boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor. The year before that, she had reportedly gone to London to meet her family. However, this year, Katrina might end up spending Christmas working in Mumbai, as she will be busy shooting for director Anurag Basu’s film Jagga Jasoos. “She has just finished the second schedule of Anurag’s film, and is currently shooting for Abhishek Kapoor’s next. By December, she will have to resume work on Anurag’s movie,” says a source close to the actor. She will be seen opposite Ranbir in Anurag’s sleuth film. This year, too, for Christmas, Katrina had planned to visit her mother in London. But going by her date diary, she will not be able to leave the city. “She does not want the film to suffer for her personal reasons, so she will take a call as soon as she finishes shooting for Abhishek’s film,” adds the source.
If god is willing, I will serve people: Rajinikanth CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth Sunday hinted that he’s ready to serve people provided he gets the green signal from the almighty. Speaking at the audio launch of Tamil actioner Lingaa, Rajinikanth told reporters: “Everybody wants me to join politics. I’m aware of its depth and danger. I’m not afraid, but just a little hesitant. It’s not in my hands. If god is willing, I will serve people.” “I think doing films with a social message is also some kind of service to society. Making films and entering politics is easy, but emerging victorious is tough in both,” he added. The superstar wanted director K.S. Ravi Kumar to complete Lingaa in six months. “The only person capable of finishing the film in less than six months was Ravi Kumar. I’m happy he did it,” he said. He also added that Ravi Kumar looked after him like a child. He was touched by the love of the film’s crew. “Lingaa”, slated for a Dec 12 release, comes after the failure of Rajinikanth’s “Kochadaiyaan”, an animated film directed by his daughter Soundarya. “We lost some money through ‘Kochadaiiyaan’, but I learnt a lot from the experience,” said Rajinikanth.

LAW LIKELY FOR EARLY CLOSURE OF NJ BARS
P
BY A STAFF WRITER
ASSAIC (NJ) -- The administration of mayor Jose “Joey” Torres is proposing a local law to force all bars and liquor stores to close at
2 am. Tavarez said bar-goers came to the city for its after-hours which rumbles through the night until 6 am or later. “The only reason you’d come to Paterson at 2 am is
for the after-hours which is already illegal,” stated Tavarez. “What are we going to do about the after-hours?” The council president said the city ought to address the after-hours spots that are operating illegally.
The city has little to offer outsiders besides drugs and crime,
said Tavarez. “In order to build a thriving economy, the city has to figure out a way to attract outsiders, bring them to the city, and have them spend their money in local establishments”, said the councilman. The councilman said the city had potential to create a section with bars and restaurants to build a vibrant night scene. The city’s 2014 Master Plan also calls for the creation of a vibrant night scene. “The City should take steps to encourage the development of the downtown as a destination retail and entertainment area. The Downtown Commercial Business District SID should take steps to facilitate the transformation of the area into a nightlife and shopping destination,” reads an excerpt from the plan. “If we take it away, we’re losing [a piece of our] economy,” said Davis. “As Mayor, I encourage a healthy nightlife for our City, but not at the expense of the peace and tranquility of our residents and neighborhoods,” said Torres, citing 6,000 calls for service made last year between the hours of 2 am and 4 am. Council members are set to discuss the ordinance during the next workshop meeting of the council.

The event featured a night of Indiainspired jazz, with some of the world’s most renowned musicians to enable underprivileged children from India’s slums to stay in school. “November 14th was Childrens’ Day in India, and our evening about helping children at risk. EWARK (NJ) -- The owners of a number of furniture businesses have agreed to a $300,000 settlement to resolve a lawsuit filed by state officials accusing them of several consumer frauds. The state filed suit in 2012 in Union County after receiving complaints that the businesses failed to deliver merchandise and offer refunds. “This settlement holds the defendants accountable for their alleged violations and requires them to pay a substantial sum, which will be used toward restitution for affected customers,” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. “Our consumer protections laws exist to protect against the unscrupulous practices alleged here. These businesses are required to follow our consumer protection laws going forward and we fully expect that they will do so.” The owners--Lev Stanik of Rahway and Roman Tyger of Brooklyn--will pay $60,000 of the total $300,000 settlement but will be required to pay the remainder-$240,000--if any terms of the settlement are violated. The $60,000 will be distributed among alleged victims. The companies involved are LaFlat, Inc., LaFlat Group, Inc., LaFurniture & Design Ltd., LaFurniture Corp., LaFurniture Group, Inc. and Tyger Furniture, also known as the TG Furniture Group.

NGLEWOOD (NJ) -- Six bomb threats--at least three called in minutes apart--prompted evacuations at seven schools and other government buildings around Bergen County on November 12. Threats were all called in shortly after 1 pm at Hackensack High School, Garfield High School, Fort Lee High School, Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood and the Leonia Board of Education offices. According to Bergen County Police Chief Brian Higgins, searches by state and county police K-9 teams found no signs of explosives and investigators suspected the threats were likely related. In Leonia, a call to the borough’s school board office around 1:15 pm said there was a bomb “in the building” but didn’t specify where. The police chief called in additional officers to assist with evacuations at the borough’s three schools as a precaution over the vague threat.
“It was very disruptive to the schools and it was very disruptive to the entire town,” the chief said. “I saw kids that looked very scared.” In a statement, the FBI’s Newark division said it was assisting county officials. Hackensack police Capt. Thomas Salcedo said the city’s high school received a threat by phone at 1:08 pm, leading to an evacuation. In a Twitter message around 4:45 pm, Fort Lee police said the high school was cleared and “has been secured for the evening.” Englewood and county police were also called to Dwight Morrow High School around 1 pm after a bomb threat there. In Garfield, police confirmed a bomb threat was phoned into the department’s headquarters some time before noon. The city’s high school also received a bomb threat at approximately 1 pm. The city’s police station has been targeted in previous threats, including one last month where a male caller claimed he would “show up at police headquarters and kill everyone inside by shooting them”.
EW YORK -- A Sikh student at Hofstra University has filed a lawsuit against the United States Army for barring him from the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), a college-based program for training future commissioned officers in the armed forces. Court documents said Iknoor Singh had claimed that the service refused to grant him a religious accommodation that would allow him to enlist in his school’s ROTC program without shaving his beard, cutting his hair and removing his turban. When he requested a religious exemption from the military’s grooming policies to enlist as an ROTC cadet in April 2013, his request was first denied on the grounds that his non-compliance would have “an adverse impact on the Army’s readiness, unit cohesion, standards, health, safety, or discipline”. The Army subsequently adjusted its decision, saying Singh could only seek an exemption after he was enlisted as a cadet, creating a catch-22 in which Singh would have to violate his faith to be able to apply for a religious accommodation. “I couldn’t believe the military was asking me to make the impossible decision of choosing between the country I love and my faith,” Singh said in a blog post on the website of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The lawsuit, filed jointly by the ACLU and United Sikhs, a UNaffiliated non-profit organization, claims that the Army’s denial of religious exemption violated the religious freedom restoration Act. The case was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. As a practicing Sikh, Singh maintains certain articles of faith, including ‘kesh,’ which the court documents describe as “rooted in the belief that allowing hair to grow naturally is a sign of respect toward the perfection of God’s creation.

riday’s Jersey Cash 5 jackpot narrowly missed being the largest the year, but the $971,722 prize is the biggest won by a single ticket in 2014. The lucky ticket was sold at Rock Sweet Shop on Rock Road in Glen Rock, state lottery officials said this morning. The winning numbers drawn were 4, 9 13, 25 and 36. There have been two drawings this year where the jackpot climbed above $1 million — one in April and one in October. On both occasions, there were multiple winners, though. Tonight’s Pick 6 jackpot is worth $5.9 million with a cash option of $4.2 million.

SHANTI, JOURNEY OF PEACE, ENRAPTURES ATLANTA BY A STAFF WRITER
A
tlanta (GA) – Shanti--A Journey o f Pe a c e , t h e p i o n e e r i n g multimedia musical experience c o n c e i ve d c o m p o s e d a n d directed by Cincinnati-based composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran, enraptured a capacity crowd at Robert Ferst Center at Georgia Tech. Shanti is in its 10th year of presentation and Atlanta was the chosen city for its tenth performance which brought together 200 talented participants from diverse cultures in Atlanta. This seemingly effortless and smooth flowing program encapsulating the evolution of a 5,000-year-old civilization, started with an invocation to Ganga, a suite of six movements depicting the human mind’s enquiry into the very idea of existence. The second depiction, Faiths, was a suite in five movements outlining plurality of faiths linked through mystery. The third depiction, the boundless human spirit, traced the achievements of the human spirit in a state of internal peace. The fourth depiction, Ashanti, was a musical interpretation in three movements of the state of unrest or lack of peace. This was followed by Reflection a musical narrative of how the human spirit relates to existence and a vision of future and the celebration of the spirit of re-creation and rejuvenation, dance of creation. The finale was an expression of a vision for the future which offers nothing but peace and joy. This dance drama comes at a time
when the world is torn apart with growing violence everywhere making it all the more appealing and apt. The program received a standing ovation from a mesmerized audience. The orchestra comprised musicians from various symphony groups, faculties from major universities and singers from operas. Earlier in the evening, the program opened to a brief introduction of Kannikeswaran, conductor Huu Mai and acknowledgment of several sponsors, institutions, departments and groups such as Raksha (Aparna Bhattacharya), Deloitte, and Veena & Ajay Madwesh who have been instrumental in making this show happen in Atlanta. IACA provided support along the way as well. Consul-General of India in Atlanta, Ambassador Ajit Kumar, who was chief guest at the event, released the CD recording of ‘Sacred Choral Chants’.
G N I M O C P U
The program was a collective effort of several acclaimed personalities in the cultural genre. THey included Payal De (Odissi), Uma Murlidhar (Planet U Performing Arts), Sasiskala Penumarthi (Kuchipudi) Padmaja and Siddharth Kelam (Bharata Natyam, Kalaivani Dance Academy), Bhavini Rajan (Samarpanam School of Fine Arts), Gayatri Subramanian (KA Academy of Music and Dance) Kumud Sawla (Kathak, Nritya Natya Kala Bharathi) and Anupa Thakurta (Deeksha School of Performing Arts). The Atlanta performance of Shanti, like the other previous performances, is a grassroots movement. Composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran has been traveling for several weekends to Atlanta to teach the music score of Shanti to the newlyassembled group of singers. The singers varied in musical abilities and varied from trained professionals to
casual singers. This group of 80 singers then rehearsed with a western choir at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Metropolitan Atlanta North in the weeks leading up to the performance under the baton of the conductor Huu Mai. “Watching the program take shape from its infancy to watching the final performance at close quarters was extremely fulfilling!” said Ajay Madwesh, who had sung earlier in Shanti in 2008. Kannikeswaran, who also wrote the script, narration and musical score for Shanti, is a recent recipient of the prestigious McKnight Visiting Artist Fellowship (Minnesota) and the Ohio Heritage Fellowship. His projects are consistent with building community by emphasizing peaceful coexistence of diverse cultures through epic representation of 5,000-yearold cultural history of India via music, dance and visuals.

A treat for spiritual seekers
Kairali Ayurvedic Group brings authentic ayurveda from Kerala to the pious wharfs of Rishikesh NIVEDITA, RISHIKESH
G
anga Aarti, lamps floating in the river, streets lined with architectural temples, foreigners dressed in Indian wear — one gets to see all this on the way to the Sanskriti Vedic Retreat, a resort that provides yoga and meditation services to spiritual lovers. The Kairali Ayurvedic Group has brought authentic ayurveda from Kerala to the pious wharfs of Rishikesh on the banks of the Ganga river in the foothills of the Himalayas. A unique feature of the property is the promise of serving the best of ancient Indian traditions — ayurveda, yoga, meditation and spirituality — offering a joyful aliveness and spirituality to both locals and foreigners alike. “Yoga and meditation are the
processes of inward journey to attain the highest goal of life. The present-day yoga is very popular in its physical form (asanas) but very few follow yoga as the philosophy of mind. That yoga brings the stillness of the mind which is free of conflict inside,” yoga teacher
Bhola Shankar Dabral told IANS. The resort has six rooms that have been named after famous holy destinations: Rishikesh, Varanasi, Allahabad, Haridwar, Devpraayg and Kolkata, all facing the holy Ganga. Most of the visitors at the property are from coun-
tries like the U.S., Canada and South Africa. For them, the most fascinating thing about the retreat is how it provides age-old Indian services as a modern day utility. The resort scores high on providing comfort and a personal touch to all its guests. From fashioning individual diets to attendants available all day long to take care of their every need, it knows how to make visitors happy. What better way can there be to perform yoga and meditate along with taking a glimpse of the Ganga? Yes, the yoga studio is located in a such a way that it overlooks the river for a soulful rendition of life and humanity. One can learn yoga from quali-
fied and experienced teachers. The 28-day course helps in experiencing one’s true self and through which one can learn about Indian philosophy, Sanskrit and Vedanta. The retreat also offers weekly yoga and meditation workshops that help discover the mystical secrets of life and creation. The most common practices of yoga that most foreigners try to learn here include Hatha yoga, Astanga yoga, Kundalini yoga, Raja yoga and Mantra yoga. Last but not the least, there is the completely vegetarian food. Alcohol is a strict no no. Among the popular dishes are Indian thali, rice noodles with sesame ginger vegetables, and date balls.
Khadi goes chic, turns money-spinner small
IANS, NEW DELHI
K High-earning, playful men ensure stronger orgasm for women NEW YORK: Find a rich, funny partner if you want a super sex life. According to an interesting research, women who have funny, self-confident and high-earning partners report more stronger orgasms. Psychologist George Gallup and his colleagues from the University at Albany interviewed female college students in committed relationships. The participants rated how often they reached orgasm during sex and this was compared to their partner’s family income, self-confidence and attractiveness, MailOnline reported.
Researchers looked at whether orgasm intensity, frequency and sexual satisfaction are determined by a woman’s choice of partner. They found that a partner’s sense of humor not only predicted his selfconfidence and family income but it also predicted a woman’s propensity to initiate sex, how often the couple had sex and it enhanced orgasm frequency. Sexual satisfaction was also related to how physically attracted women were to their partner and breadth of their shoulders.
hadi, once the dowdy sartorial symbol of India’s independence movement, is now trendy and makes the cash registers ring. Designers are rocking the ramp with khadi collections and brands are seeing profit by selling their range made from hand-woven cotton fabric. The khadi collection by Fabindia, a brand that retails handcrafted clothing and home furnishings, sells like hot cakes. “We have witnessed growth in khadi business in terms of the offering as well as the customer base. In addition, the business has grown almost three times in the last five years. The market is definitely growing faster than the production capacities,” Anuradha Kumar, creative head, Women’s Wear, Fabindia, told IANS. She said that its classic khadi kurtas for men and women have always been one of the fast sellers. Designer Gaurang Shah, who showed his khadi line at the Berlin Fashion Week and the New York Fashion Week in 2012, says that people’s perception towards the humble fabric has changed. “When I started working with weavers about 9-10 years back, they used to do simple bootis, very

border, which was not very appealing. It was those kinds of saris which 60 or 70 years old ladies used to wear. But now with the help of designers, weavers are trying new technique, designs and colors,” Shah told IANS. “We did a lot of fusion in khadi with various contemporary designs. People’s m i n d s e t towards khadi has changed,” Shah added.
