And it will help us create good jobs, guarantee equal pay for women, and build better schools for all our children. “You’ve been one of our reliable supporters in the past, and I hope you will make your voice heard

Riding a wave of discontent with Obama and his policies, Republicans picked their sixth Senate seat in North Carolina, where Thom Tillis defeated incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan to consolidate their power on Capitol Hill, the New York Times reported. The conservative opposition who already lead the House needed to gain six seats from 36 seats up for grabs in the November 4 mid-term elections to wrest control of the upper chamber, where Obama’s Democrats currently have a 53-45 majority with two Independents in the mix. Five other Democratic-held seats picked up by Republicans in their quest for Senate majority came in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas and West Virginia,

according to CNN projections. The channel also projected that Republicans will maintain their grip on the 435-member House of Representatives where they currently have a 233-199 lead.

t was an accidental meeting with a Military Police officer that led us to the house of death in Delhi in 1984. We had witnessed on the evening of October 31 the first bout of anti-Sikh violence that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination. We were near the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in south Delhi where the prime minister was declared dead after being shot by two Sikh bodyguards. A mob fury against the Sikh community quickly enveloped the city, with frenzied supporters of known Congress politicians attacking innocent Sikhs and their property. Reporter Jagpreet Luthra and I saw a Sikh-owned bus set on fire and Sikh-owned shops getting looted at the Kidwai Nagar market, a stone’s throw distance from AIIMS. “Maro Sardaron ko!” The cries were chilling. The atmosphere was frightening. Police were nowhere in sight although they existed in hundreds near the AIIMS. In any case, they made no effort to stop anyone. Jagpreet quickly took off her ‘kada’ and put it in her purse. She didn’t want anyone to know she was a Sikh. That was when one of the policemen whispered, pointing to a large dimly lit room: “Go there and see.” What we saw was bone chilling. Piled up shabbily like a mini mountain — like sacks of food grain in a warehouse — were bodies after bodies, of men and women, most of the dress on the victims drenched in blood. Some bodies had no clothes. A strong stench hit us all. I recall Dipankar rushing out to throw up. There was no way we could count how many bodies were stuffed there. The doctor in charge of the mortuary, L.T. Ramani, calmly shared with us the statistics. The story we filed for UNI an hour later was the first to tell the world that hundreds — yes, hundreds — of Sikhs had been slaughtered in Delhi by Congress-sponsored mobs to avenge Indira Gandhi’s assassination. For three full days from the evening of October 31, killer mobs ruled Delhi. There was no area they spared, barring perhaps the very heart where VVIPs reside. The state simply withered away.

Mamata’s hold on power becomes precarious AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

he security risk posed by the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh has always been known, but few had anticipated that the virtually unchecked flow of aliens over the years would enable a Bangladeshi terrorist group to establish a base in West Bengal with the objective of assassinating the prime minister and leader of the opposition in Dhaka. What is more disconcerting is that their sinister plot would have remained unknown for a much longer period but for the accidental explosion of a bomb in a house in Burdwan district where these were being manufactured. It is this fortuitous breakthrough for the security forces which persuaded the National Investigating Agency (NIA) to muscle its way into probing the conspiracy against the wishes of the state government. The latter had been reluctant to

allow the Delhi-based NIA to start its inquiries on the ground that it militated against the country’s federal structure. It was on this plea that West Bengal and several other states, including Gujarat, had stalled the setting up of a National CounterTerrorism Centre (NCTC) a few years ago. What the latest events have shown, however, is that such sensitiveness about federalism is inadvisable at a time when Islamist terror has become a grave threat in the sub-continent and elsewhere. The Mamata Banerjee government’s initial objection to the NIA’s intervention in the Burdwan case has, however, been ascribed less to any concern about the erosion of the state’s rights than about a desire to pose as a champion of the minorities. The chief minister apparently felt that a wide-ranging probe into the activities of the Jamaat-ulMujahideen of Bangladesh, which

will include raids on a number of madrasas or seminaries for Muslims, may alienate a section of the community, which constitutes a

crucial 30 percent of the state’s population. Her attitude has given a handle to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to reiterate with great

fervour its old allegations of minority appeasement against “secular” parties. The fact that the Jamaat infiltrators are believed to have been entering West Bengal from 2007 onwards, when the leftists were in power, shows that there is little to choose between Communist and non-Communist secularists. The BJP has now gone to the extent of accusing the Trinamool Congress of terrorist connections. It is a case of overreaction, of course, but there is little doubt that the latest developments have dealt yet another, and possibly the most damaging, blow to Mamata Banerjee’s reputation, especially where the middle class is concerned. It goes without saying that she is now facing the most serious crisis of her career. Till now she had been seen as someone who had failed to graduate to be a responsible administrator from her earlier street-fighting avatar as a rabble-rouser.

In the latest such incident, the house of Rajesh Singh at Netherwood Circle in Middlesex County was targeted by three masked men on October 30. “They just came into the house, tied us up and took away whatever we had,” pix11.com quoted Singh as saying. Police are in search of the three masked men who robbed Singh and his family at gunpoint. They have got divorced in a very unique and elegant way where there is no alimony and not a single document drawn up between them. IAMI (FL) -- Irfan Khan, a naturalized US citizen from Pakistan with wife and two children, worked hard to realize the American dream after arriving in this country in 1994. He held jobs in South Florida as a taxi driver and service technician, and operated a limousine company. He was an avid cricket player. Then he stepped up to a California computer industry job in 2011 that promised a good living. A short time later, Khan was indicted, along with his father and brother — both Muslim imams at South Florida mosques — with conspiring to provide up to $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban terror group. Khan spent 319 days in solitary confinement before federal prosecutors abruptly dropped all

charges in June 2012. “It was very, very hard,’’ Khan said of his days spent praying and reading in a lonely cell. Later, a federal judge ordered the acquittal of Khan’s brother for lack of evidence, although their elderly father, Hafiz Khan, was convicted at trial and sentenced to 25 years behind bars. He’s serving that time at a federal prison in

North Carolina. Now, Irfan Khan is suing the US government for malicious prosecution, accusing authorities of essentially manufacturing a non-existent case against him. He is seeking potentially tens of millions of dollars in damages. A Miami federal judge refused the Justice Department’s attempt to get the case dismissed, and it’s headed for a June 2015 trial date. Khan has had trouble opening bank accounts, leasing a car and getting a mortgage. His children, haunted by their father’s arrest, fear the police. Friends and family shun him, asking that he delete their phone numbers, fearing they too will be targeted for surveillance. “Everywhere I look is a dead end for me,’’ Khan said. “I was unfairly targeted and I don’t want this to happen to anybody ever again. I just want justice.’’

2 teens on bridge hit by train

UDORA (KS) -- Two teens could be in trouble with the law after they were struck by a train in Eudora, Kansas, on November 1. Sergeant Chris Morris of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office said the two were hanging out on a bridge just before 4 pm when they saw the train coming and tried to get off the bridge in time. They were unsuccessful and were hit. The lieutenant said that what the teens were doing is considered criminal trespassing. Both boys, who are approximately 16, were found with serious injuries and were airlifted to local hospitals. While one is from Eudora and the other from Lawrence. The incident happened just west of the Eudora water treatment facility and north of Old K-10 near the Wakarusa River.

SRI SRI PROVES A CATALYST FOR PEACE FOR FERGUSON

T LOUIS (MI) -- October 22 could rightly be proclaimed as the Art of Living Foundation and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Day in St. Louis county. Inside Ferguson is a deep weariness -weariness with the platitudes of leaders and activists, reporters and media outlets, politics and police and now mobs and looters. Unrest and strife has now become a fixture in this Gateway City. Known for its hallmark St Louis Arch, a beacon of hope that now seems to have the downward curve of a drooping smile. However, there were many moments to smile when Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a world renowned spiritual leader and founder of Art of Living, addressed a 1,000-strong gathering and led a meditation at an event called at ‘Corner of Peace & True Happiness’ at the St. Charles Convention Center organized by the Foundation on October 22. Beaming broadly, Mike Casewell, an ASU student in business sustainability, said: “The insight that was given by Sri Sri answered many questions I had about life and the event left me feeling content with myself.” Echoing a similar sentiment Bobby Bravo, another ASU Master’s student, said: “It was a perfect blend of sharing his insights and uniting people together in a peaceful way.” In the past at the invitation of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an ambassador of peace and nonviolence, has traveled to Iraq to advise on peace initiatives. And at the request of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he went to Sri Lanka to act as a mediator during its civil war. He has also arbitrated conflicts in Kashmir, Cameroon and South Africa and

EW YORK – Things got scary for two women working at an Aurora haunted house over the weekend when a patron groped them while he was inside the attraction. Ameet Kumar, 30, of Hicksville, N.Y. was charged with two counts of battery under Aurora ordinances. The police responded around 7:30 pm on November 2 to a haunted house amusement on West New York Street after two female employees said they had been inappropriately touched. Officers determined at the scene that Kumar allegedly groped a 20-year-old employee’s buttocks while they were in the haunted house. He also allegedly grabbed a 40-year-old woman in the chest as he was exiting the attraction. The security detained him until the police arrived. Kumar has been told to appear in court on November 10.

Philadelphia men of Indian origin have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to extort victims to load prepaid debit cards with funds that were stolen as part of the scheme, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Investigators from the FBI and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations arrested Alpeshkumar Patel, 30, and Vijaykumar Patel, 39, of Philadelphia at the latter’s home on a complaint charging them with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The duo appeared before US Magistrate Judge Mark Falk in Newark federal court. The charge of conspiracy to wire fraud carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of the greater of $250,000, or twice the gross profits to the defendants or twice the gross loss suffered to the victims of the offense. According to the complaint unsealed on October 28, from September 2013 through March 2014, the two men were allegedly part of a conspiracy to steal money using reloadable debit cards. First they would purchase reloadable Green Dot Cards, and register them in names other than their own. The conspirators—some of whom were located in India—contacted victims by phone and used threats or deceit to induce them to put money on MoneyPak cards, which are used along with assigned

The conspirators then used the reloadable cards to purchase money orders that were deposited into bank accounts. All of the steps were taken quickly so law enforcement and victims could not identify the conspirators or prevent or reverse the fraudulent transfers, a release from the US Attorney for New Jersey said. As one example, a retail store located in New Jersey received a telephone call from an unknown caller on September 10, 2013. The caller said there was a bomb in the store and the store manager had five minutes to comply with the caller’s demands or the bomb would detonate. The caller then asked the manager to load 10 $500 MoneyPak cards and provide the caller with the associated PIN codes. The manager had provided the code for one card before law enforcement arrived at the store, instructed the manager to hang up the phone, and evacuated the building. The $500 associated with that code was transferred to an existing prepaid reloadable Green Dot Card. Surveillance video showed Alpeshkumar Patel in the Philadelphia CVS where the Green Dot Card was bought. That card was then used by Vijaykumar Patel, who was caught on video purchasing two money orders in a Philadelphia Wal Mart. The money orders, in turn, were used to deposit funds into a bank account.

EW JERSEY -- The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) has condemned the recent targeting of fellow community members in three burglaries within just nine days in Middlesex county, New Jersey. The FIA urged the community, the elected officials and officials with the Indian diaspora roots to make the safety of the community one of the focal points in all residing localities, especially the ones with high population of the community. Middlesex county holds one of the highest population of (South Asian) India Americans and migrants in the United States with multiple government officials of Indian descent. No wonder, the FIA feels that complacency on the request of action or non- expression on these episodes can reflect improperly on the strength and unity of the community. The FIA will express in writing and follow up with the designated officials and urges the community as well to take a unified and rightful stance by voicing opinion against such targeted vandalism which should be promptly trouble-shooted and addressed. There is also a need for emphasis on programs such as elevated patrolling of the affected neighborhoods/community awareness tips on ‘Be on the look-out for’ , do’s and don’ts, etc. along with attention and follow-up to the investigation to see that the vandals are brought to book promptly.

Young heart can heal faster According to a study, the heart holds its own pool of immune cells

explained. The investigators found that the helpful macrophages originate in the embryonic heart and harmful macrophages originate in the bone marrow and could be distinguished by whether they express a

protein on their surface called CCR2. Macrophages without CCR2 originate in the heart; those with CCR2 come from the bone marrow, the research showed. The researchers found that a compound that inhibits the CCR2 protein could block the bone marrow’s macrophages from entering the heart. “When we did that, we found that the macrophages from the bone marrow did not come in,” Lavine said. “And the macrophages native to the heart remained. We saw reduced inflammation in these injured adult hearts, less oxidative damage and improved repair. We also saw new blood vessel growth,” Lavine added. The study appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition.

Why scratching makes an itch worse WASHINGTON: Scratching an itch only makes it worse but you cannot resist that urge to scratch more? Blame it on the brain. According to a research, scratching causes the brain to release a hormone called serotonin which intensifies the itch sensation. “The problem is that when the brain gets those pain signals, it responds by producing the neuro-

transmitter serotonin to help control that pain,” said senior investigator Zhou-Feng Chen, director of the center for the study of itch at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
