Why is FBI after Robin Raphel? The veteran diplomat is suspected of taking classified information home from the State Department IANS, WASHINGTON

C

ontroversial veteran American diplomat Robin Raphel, under FBI scanner as part of an anti-spying probe, was suspected of taking classified information home from the State Department, according to media reports. Citing unnamed officials, The

New York Times said the FBI was trying to determine why Raphel apparently brought classified information home, and whether she had passed, or was planning to pass, the information to a foreign government. In October FBI agents searched the home and State Department offices of Raphel, who had raised the hackles of the Indian establishment in the 1990s by describing

P

resident Barack Obama on November 8 nominated federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch to replace Eric Holder as the country’s next attorney general. “I can think of no better public servant to be our next attorney general,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying while announcing the nomination in Roosevelt Room at the White House. Obama said he hoped the Senate would confirm without delay the Brooklyn federal prosecutor, who he said had distinguished herself as “tough and fair”. If approved by the Senate, Lynch

Jammu and Kashmir as “disputed territory” and her lobbying for separatists there. Raphel, who was appointed as the first assistant secretary of state for South Asia in 1993 by then President Bill Clinton, also sided with Sikh separatists. She “was seen in New Delhi as a catalyst for Washington trafficking with India’s enemies,” according to

uary. “That’s good news for New Delhi,” Ayers wrote, noting: “McCain has a long track record of support for a stronger India and a stronger U.S. relationship with it.” “He’s been a frequent visitor, most recently in July, and has spoken forcefully about American interests in a deeper partnership with India,”

The Washington Post which first reported the story. The Times said officials did not give details about why they were examining Raphel’s activities. Nor did they say whether she was officially a target of the investigation. Raphel, 67, who started her career as an analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had also served as political counsellor in New Delhi.

Gay marriage remains illegal in four states WASHINGTON: Homosexual marriages continue to remain illegal in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee following a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton, appointed by former president George W. Bush, on November 8 dismissed earlier decisions by lower courts which pronounced laws banning homosexual marriages in these four states as unconstitutional. Same sex marriage is legal in 32 of the 50 states in the U.S.

N Korea releases last two US detainees IANS, WASHINGTON

‘Republican controlled Congress may favor India’ WASHINGTON: After the Republican victory in the United States mid-term, Congress is likely to be more interested in doing more with India on security, energy, and foreign policy, according to an American expert on South Asia. But it’s also likely to be still concerned about trade barriers and temporary worker visas, wrote Alyssa Ayres, a former State Department official and an expert at the Council on Foreign Relations. The mid-term elections gave the Republican Party control of the Senate after eight years and a stronger showing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives Following that President Barack Obama’s 2008 Republican presidential rival, Senator John McCain is likely to assume the chairmanship of the Senate Armed Services Committee in Jan-

In that job, she was chiefly responsible for administering nonmilitary aid such as U.S. economic grants and incentives, according to

he United States on November 9 confirmed and welcomed the release of last two American detainees held by North Korea. “We can confirm that U.S. citizens Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller have been allowed to depart the DPRK (North Korea) and are on their way home,” Xinhua quoted the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as saying in a statement. It said James Clapper, the director of National Intelligence who engaged in discussions with Pyongyang about the release of the two detainees, was accompanying them on their way home. The latest development came after North Korea let go another American detainee Jeffrey Fowle Oct 21. State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki welcomed North Korea’s new move. However, she

ASEAN: Modi pitches for partnership On his visit to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji, Prime Minister set to call for deeper ties

Modi debuts on Instagram

IANS, NAY PYI TAW

I

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 12 said that India's relations with the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are very good and the two sides can be great partners. “ASEAN and India have the vigour and enthusiasm of their youth and wisdom and understanding of their ancient civilisations,” Modi said addressing the 25th ASEAN Summit in this capital of Myanmar. “Rapidly developing India and ASEAN can be great partners for each other. We are both keen to enhance our cooperation in advancing balance, peace and stability in the region,” he said. Stating that his government has been in office for six months, Modi said that India has rapidly enhanced its engagement with the east, “a reflection of the priority that we give to this region”.

‘India must lead in tackling black money’ BRISBANE: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit here for the G20 Summit, a leading global coalition against corruption has said India must take the lead in addressing black money, that affects the poor and developing countries the most. “Prime Minister Modi made addressing black money one of his first priorities on taking office,” said the Financial Transparency Coalition, a global network of over 150 civil society organizations, 13 governments and dozens of experts on illicit financial flows. “India has a powerful role to play in the debate around developing country inclusion in systems for the cross-border exchange of financial information and country-by-country reporting for multinational corporations,” it said. “Modi has made bringing black money home a national priority. Now it’s time for India to do the same on the global stage,” said the coalition, which has the New Delhi-based Delhi’s Centre for Budget Governance and Accountability as a member. The Indian prime minister had left New Delhi on a 10-day, threenation tour and will be in this west Australian city November 15-16 for the G20 Summit. According to the coalition, an estimated $1 trillion leaves developing nations every year by way of illicit financial flows -money that is illegally earned, utilised or transferred, thereby depriving funds for projects to end poverty and push development.

“We have close bilateral relations with each of you and we treat the relations with ASEAN with the same importance,” the prime minister said. Stating that the 10-nation bloc has established its own identity and voice in global political and economic affairs, he said that the

Asia-Pacific region needed integration and cooperation. “To achieve this extremely important goal, we look at ASEAN, not only for inspiration but also for its leadership; and you have achieved a great deal of success in leading us in that direction,” Modi said.

NAY PYI TAW: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 12 made his Instagram debut with a picture of the venue of the 25th ASEAN Summit here — and notched up followers at a blistering pace. After sharing his first post on the online mobile photo-sharing site, he tweeted: “Hello World! Great being on Instagram. My first photo... this one from the ASEAN Summit. @ Nay Pyi Taw... http://instagram.com/p/vSUOhVM_wX/”. He was welcomed on the site by his followers. There were a staggering 40,000 followers by noon which kept

Stating that the world view of the two sides is similar in many respects, Modi said: “We have no irritants in our relationship. We see encouraging opportunities and challenges in the world in similar ways.” The prime minister highlighted New Delhi's Look East Policy while remarking that the

escribing services sector growth in India as a “low hanging fruit”, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on November 12 said the ‘Make in India’ program has to be competitive in price terms in order to boost exports. “Services sector growth is a low hanging fruit in India. What is made in India has to be competitive in terms of prices,” Jaitley said here at a services conclave organized jointly by the commerce ministry and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). “We have to bring down prices of the products manufactured in India because consumers are going to buy products that are cheaper and of good quality. There is no patriotism in international trade,” he added. Services make up a major 57 percent share in the country’s gross

domestic product (GDP), while annual exports are worth over $150 billion. Explaining that as finance minister he had a “vested interest in the service sector doing well” because it helps to cover the deficit in India’s merchandise exports, Jaitley said the shrinking share of the manufacturing sector to only 15

percent of the economy means the country has to pursue service exports aggressively. “The manufacturing sector has partly shrunk and unable to absorb the underemployment in agriculture. Services is an area where we need to be aggressive. We cannot afford to be defensive,” Jaitley said.

on increasing by the second. “Welcome to Instagram sir, wish you a great day,” said one follower. Another wrote: “Happy to see the world through your eyes.” The tech-savvy prime minister has 7.79 million followers on his Twitter account @narendramodi, and 3.43 million so far on the Prime Minister’s Office account of @PMOIndia. The prime minister has been quite active on other social sites like Stumbleupon, Pinterest, Tumblr and LinkedIn. He has been sharing photos on Flickr as well, said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

potential of India-ASEAN ties is much higher than what it is at the moment. “A new era of economic development, industrialization and trade has begun in India. Externally, India's 'Look East Policy' has become 'Act East Policy',” the prime minister said.

BJP govt wins trust vote in Maharashtra MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ minority government on November 12 won the vote of confidence of the state assembly by a voice vote, while the Shiv Sena opted for the role of opposition here. The development was Devendra Fadnavis preceded by the unanimous election of BJP leader Haribhau Bagde as the new Speaker of the Maharashtra assembly. The Congress and Shiv Sena cried foul over the new speaker’s decision to reject the demand for balloting and instead to settle for a voice vote.

hat the defense portfolio will be taken away from Arun Jaitley was a given. The lawyer-politician, who will turn 62 next month, had himself said in as many words that it was an additional charge he was holding, which would be assigned to someone else at the first given opportunity. But the allocation of information and broadcasting ministry in the latest cabinet reshuffle — in addition to his existing portfolios of finance and corporate affairs — is signal enough as to who remains the most trusted man in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers. Jaitley may figure at the third place in the actual pecking order, as listed in communiqué from Rashtrapati Bhavan on portfolio AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he Congress high command, which means the mother-and-son duo of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, is mistaken if it believes that the deep nervousness among Congressmen about the party’s bleak future can be dispelled by a token offer of resignation by the two and a clean chit for themselves which they secured from a servile acolyte, A.K. Antony, in a report about the election debacle. The simmering of anxiety and discontent has continued with the split in the party’s Tamil Nadu unit providing the latest evidence of the disquiet. The rupture recalled an earlier break-up when a new party, the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), was formed under a veteran Congress leader of the time, G.K. Moopanar. Now, his son, G.K. Vasan, is the rebel. Among the important members who were a part of the TMC was P. Chidambaram, whose son Karti has recently said the high command “culture” must go at a

allocation of the 65 members, excluding Modi himself. He figures after Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in that order. Yet, there are several reasons why this former president of the Delhi University Students Union has emerged more powerful than some of his peers. The finance portfolio in itself is a formidable one, since it is at the core of any of the programmes of the government that require fiscal allocations.

The finance portfolio in itself is a formidable one as it is at the core of any of the programs of government that require fiscal allocations But, in addition, in Modi’s scheme of things, a well-oiled information and broadcasting ministry is key to ensuring that the idea of “good governance” reaches the people at large, in the manner

interacts with the media the most and is additionally seen as the political public face of not just the cabinet, but also the government. No prime minister, who has some hold over his flock, entrusts

this crucial ministry to a person whom he is not comfortable with. If Jaitley is assigned this additional task, it cannot be without reason. Incidentally, this well-connected senior counsel in the Supreme Court has the right credentials to hold the information and broadcasting portfolio, having served in it as a minister of state with independent charge in 1999-2000. He has been his party’s spokesperson as well. Politically, too, it has certainly helped that Jaitley represents Gujarat, the prime minister’s home state, in the Rajya Sabha. time when the party has reached a “historic low”. There is little doubt outside the party — and probably among large sections within it as well that the main reason for reaching this lowly stage is the lack of a credible leadership. Neither Sonia

nor Rahul has measured up to the standards required to face the challenge posed by a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Narendra Modi. Nor has the Congress formulated an ideology which has wide acceptance. The party’s lack of vision is evi-

dent from the fact that even the cornerstone of its philosophy — secularism — has come under attack from within the Congress. For instance, the loyal Antony has noted in his report that the party’s practice of secularism has come to be associated with Muslim

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh in the latest national elections by a margin of over 100,000 votes may have actually proved to be a boon for him. What has also evoked much curiosity about the information and broadcasting portfolio being assigned to Jaitley is that his predecessor Prakash Javadekar was perceived as the right choice. After all, in the run-up to the elections, he was among the public faces of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as one of its key spokespersons. Clearly, Modi has a different take on this. appeasement, a charge which has been made by the BJP from the 1990s with L.K. Advani coining the phrase, pseudo-secularism, to describe the Congress’s muddled version. Digvijay Singh, the senior general secretary of the Congress, acknowledged that the party made the mistake of not being equally vocal about both Hindu and Muslim fundamentalism. The Congress’ other deficiency is in the field of economic policy. The root of this failure lies in its inability to break free from the Nehruvian concept of socialism, manifested in a 1955 resolution calling for the establishment of a “socialistic pattern” of society. Now, the dynasty should take a sabbatical, as former Congress MP Jagmit Singh Brar suggested, so that the party can start cutting loose from the apron strings of a family in the matter of inspirational leadership or intellectual acumen are becoming increasingly apparent. The argument that the Congress will fall apart in the dynasty’s absence begs the question since it is disintegrating even now.

n the battle for Silicon Valley, Indian-American Rohit ‘Ro’ Khanna has conceded defeat after giving seven-term incumbent Mike Honda the toughest fight of his life for the South Bay Congressional seat. In the Democrats-only tussle, the 38-year-old Khanna, a former Obama administration official conceded after he and Honda agreed it would be impossible to reverse the 73-year-old veteran lawmaker’s 4,000-plus vote lead, the San Francisco Gate reported. Thousands of votes still remained to be counted in the district, which spreads from Fremont through part of San Jose and over to Santa Clara, Cupertino and

Sunnyvale. While Khanna won endorsement and financial support of many well-known tech executives, Honda was buoyed by support from the state Democratic Party and big-name Democrats including President Barack Obama. California Governor Jerry

Khanna and Honda agreed it would be impossible to reverse the later’s vote lead Brown also pumped campaign cash into TV ads attacking Khanna during the final two weeks of the campaign, according to the Gate.

Speaking to supporters at his Fremont campaign headquarters, Khanna thanked his staff and volunteers and said he had called Honda and “wished him well as he returns to Washington for another term”. “This long campaign has come to a close,” Khanna was quoted as saying. “I believe, more than ever, that our district has so much to offer in building a fair and prosperous economic future for our nation in the 21st century. Our work is just beginning.” Khanna told a newspaper that he was “inspired by the passion both campaigns have shown in this very unique district. The voters are fundamentally fair, openminded and decent, and I respect their decision”.

S Antani is among US youngest lawmakers WASHINGTON: At 23, Indian-American law student Niraj Antani, a Republican, will be one of America’s youngest lawmakers after being elected to the state House in Ohio in the mid-term elections. “I think the legislature should reflect the way the people look, so I believe my generation does deserve a voice to fight for my children or grandchildren,” University of Dayton student Antani said on his election. He defeated 62-year-old Patrick Morris of the Democratic Party in Ohio’s 42nd House District. “I will work hard and fight every day for my constituents in the Ohio House of Representatives. Together, I know that we can create opportunities so all can achieve their American Dream,” Antani wrote on his Facebook profile. Antani graduated from Ohio State University in spring last year with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He is the second Indian American to serve in the Ohio House after Jay Goyal who represented the 73rd District for three terms from 2006 to 2012. Antani’s parents came to the U.S. in 1987 and settled in Washington Township. Later, they moved to Miami. His father Jaimini died in 2010. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Saira Blair became America’s youngest elected lawmaker as a delegate in the West Virginia House after defeating a 44year-old attorney. There are more than 7,300 state legislators in the U.S., and fewer than five percent are under the age of 30, according to Morgan Cullen, a policy analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures. MODI’S TEAM GETS BIGGER

As many as 21 new ministers, including four of Cabinet rank, inducted; total strength now 66 IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on expanded his Union Council of Ministers, inducting 21 new faces, including four with Cabinet rank, with the average age being 56, seeking to consolidate party’s gains of the Lok Sabha elections by giving representation to various regions and communities. The total strength of the Council of Ministers now goes up to 66. The much-anticipated first Ministry expansion was marred with ally Shiv Sena calling off participation in the government at the last minute, exacerbating their already strained ties. Former Shiv Sena leader Suresh Prabhu was sworn in as a cabinet minister after he quit the Shiv Sena. Prabhu, who is the prime minister’s interlocutor for the G20, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is expected to become a Rajya Sabha member. In Mumbai, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray described Prabhu’s joining the BJP as “unfortunate” but indicated that Anant Geete, party’s representative in the Modi government, will continue for the time being. Thackeray put a condition that his party will sit in opposition in Maharashtra if BJP takes support of NCP to prove its majority

announced till Sunday evening. The first meeting of the expanded council of ministers is slated for Monday. Former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who is widely tipped to get the defense portfolio, was the first to take oath at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. BJP general secretary J.P. Nadda, who is known to be close to Modi and party chief Amit Shah, and Birender Singh, who left the Congress ahead of the recent Haryana assembly elections to join the BJP, were administered oath as cabinet ministers by President Pranab Mukherjee.

India Inc happy with expansion Echoing the sentiments of India Inc, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on November 9 congratulated the new members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ministerial council and said the ministryexpansion will help improve the focus on economic recovery. “The induction of new ministers will streamline governance and bring in new ideas for the economic reforms process,” said CII president Ajay Shriram. “Several of the ministries were under a single minister, and industry was widely expecting the expansion of the cabinet at an early date.” The industry chamber said at a time when the economy was recovering, it was important to fast-track policies to strengthen this. The cabinet expansion sends out a signal that the government under Prime Minister Modi is serious about accelerating reforms. India’s GDP rose 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2014-15, an improvement over the sub-five-percent rate of the previous two years. Industry is hoping the expanded cabinet will rapidly address tax reform, land acquisition, power and ease of doing business. He said that while the business sentiment picked up since the new government took over, the ministerial expansion will support faster decision-making, efficient administration and faster clearances.

JAGAT PRAKASH NADDA, 54 (Health and family welfare): Brought up in Patna, Nadda was one of the youngest legislators to be elected to Himachal assembly. The veteran politician who earned recognition as a Himachal Pradesh leader lost the race for BJP’s presidency to Amit Shah after the Lok Sabha elections. His big leap into politics started during Emergency in 1977 as an Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist. Nadda is known to maintain a low profile and claims to be a disciplined solider of the RSS.

BIRENDER SINGH, 68 (Rural development): A long-time Congress man, he joined the BJP before assembly elections in Haryana to protest against the grand old party not agreeing to the sacking of then chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. In his long political career, he had been Congress in-charge for many states such as Uttarakhand and Himachal, and was the chairperson of many parliamentary standing committees. He had joined the BJP apparently on the assurance that he would get a Union cabinet berth.

THE WORLD LONDON: The Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization plans to introduce its own currency and bring back solid gold and silver coins, according to media reports. This is believed to be part of the IS’s efforts to gain legitimacy and solidify its dominance. The militants want to bring back the original dinar, which is a currency from the ancient Islamic era, and religious authorities in Iraq have apparently announced the currency’s return in mosques, the Daily Mail reported on November 10. Both were round in shape and one side of the coin was typically stamped with an Islamic message, while the other side featured the date of minting and the country’s ruler. The original gold and silver coins were first introduced during the Caliphate of Uthman in 634 CE. The dinar is today used by a number

US is ready to work with China to realize this target. Obama attended the 22nd AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting that concluded on November 11 and will pay a state visit to China afterwards. Meanwhile, China has censured a video on the internet showing a chivalrous Russian President Vladimir Putin covering the shoulders of Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan with his coat during the gala dinner at the opening of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). Chinese media outlets went wild over the incident and the video was broadcast on social media.

use the independent currency in areas it controls as part of its war on the West, though the terror outfit has yet to confirm this. IS was raking in money at a remarkable rate, earning about $1 million a day from black market oil sales alone. The group extracts oil from territory captured across Syria and Iraq, and sells it to smugglers. David Cohen, who leads the U.S. Treasury Department’s efforts to undermine the IS’s finances, said the extremists also get several mil-

lion dollars a month from wealthy donors, extortion rackets and other criminal activities. In addition, he said the group has taken in at least $20 million in ransom payments this year from kidnappings. The IS is a Sunni jihadi organization and last June self-proclaimed a “caliphate” in areas it controls in Iraq and Syria. The group has been named a terrorist organization by the UN and EU. Formerly called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), its original aim was to establish an Islamic state in Sunni-majority regions of Iraq.

UN reiterates supports for Malala UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his support for Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani Nobel Laureate and girls’ education advocate, who has come under a renewed volley of attacks in her homeland. Moon’s deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, told reporters on November 11: “The Secretary-General has made clear his support for Malala, for her goals, for the cause of girls’ education and he continues to stand by that. So he is very clear that the work she’s doing is in line with the work of the United Nations, and we will support her in those efforts.” Haq was answering a reporter’s question about UN reactions to observance of “I Am Not Malala Day” on

November 10 by the All Pakistan Private School Federation and its organizer’s accusation that Malala’s book, “I Am Malala,” is against Islam and Pakistan. He referred to a statement issued by Moon recently about the treatment of minorities in Pakistan and calling for action against the attackers and said, “We stand by the sentiments expressed in that statement.”

Wagah attack suspects die in air strikes: Pak military IANS, ISLAMABAD

T

he Pakistani military claimed to have killed 13 terrorists, including those involved in the Wagah border suicide attack, in aerial strikes, media reported. The strikes were undertaken on November 11 in the Daras area of Khyber Agency, on the basis of “credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists involved in the Wagah attack”, Dawn reported citing an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement. Khyber is part of Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and is one of the eight tribal areas, which are

known as “agencies” in Pakistan. Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaedalinked militants are believed to have carved out strongholds in this region. During the strikes, fighter jets destroyed three militant hideouts including an ammunition depot. Intelligence sources believe that the mastermind and handlers of the Wagah border terrorist attack might be among the dead. The information, however, could not be verified independently. At least 60 people were killed and over 110 injured when a teenaged suicide bomber blew himself up near the Wagah border in Pakistan Nov 2 during the flag-lowering ceremony at the border.

KABUL: At least nine people were killed and five injured on November 10 in a suicide attack in Afghanistan’s Logar province. “A suicide bomber approached the entrance of provincial police department in Pul-e-Alam and detonated his explosive jacket among a group of Afghan Local Police (ALP) who were waiting for access,” an official told Xinhua. The bomber disguised himself as an ALP policeman, the official said. The victims were seven police personnel, the bomber and a civilian. The attack followed two explo-

sions in Nangarhar province and in Afghan capital of Kabul earlier in the day, which claimed the lives of three senior police officials and injured three others. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the serial blasts.

India cruise to easy series win

A

superb all-round performance helped India cruise to a six-wicket win in the third One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka and clinch the five-match series 3-0 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on November 9. Set a target of 243 runs, India coasted to victory in 44.1 overs, winning with 35 balls to spare. Opener Shikhar Dhawan played a stellar knock (91) and forged useful partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane (31) and Ambati Rayadu (35) to lead India to victory. Virat Kohli also contributed with a solid 53, in the process becoming the quickest batsman to reach 6,000 ODI runs, taking only 136 innings to reach the feat. Pacer Umesh Yadav (4/53) wrecked Sri Lanka’s top order earlier in the day to help set up the triumph. India approached their run chase in the right spirit, giving nothing away despite chasing a small target against a mediocre attack. Dhawan was in hot form, hitting

Advani gears up for another title

At the end of the third match both Carlsen and Anand have 1.5 points each.

Anand bounces back in third match CHENNAI: Indian chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand on November 11 defeated World Champion Magnus Carlsen in 34 moves in the third game of their world title match held in Russia, in the process breaking the “Carlsen Jinx” bugging him since losing the world title to Carlsen last year. At the end of the third game in the 12 game match, both the players have 1.5 points each. Grandmaster Nigel Short tweeted: “I said at the start of the game, ‘contrary to popular belief, the match is not over’. However, for some Indian trolls, I am anti-Anand.” In the Queen’s Gambit Declined opening, playing white, Indian ace Anand started confidently and the moves progressed as per the book with the champion castling on the King side. While Anand was pushing out his pawns to pave the way for his pieces, Carlsen brought out his queen side knight. On move 7, Anand started pushing his c-pawn and his other pawns on the queen side and Carlsen simi-

larly responded. A flurry of activity began on move 11 with Anand traded his white bishop for Carlsen’s white bishop. Following that, Anand gave up his b-pawn in order to advance his c file pawn to the seventh rank. Anand’s 17th move of putting his knight on the g5 square aiming for a play centered around his pawn on the seventh rank. This made Carlsen to go into deep thought for a whopping 32 minutes to make his move. This prompted world number 7 Grandmaster Anish Giri to tweet: “Interesting, the axiom that Magnus has an unearthly memory is being challenged right now.” Speaking to IANS, world number 23 Grandmaster P.Harikrishna said: “It is unclear why Carlsen took so long. Seems he was figuring out the way to take Anand out of theory/home preparation.” Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujarathi tweeted that the board position was reached in Aronian-Adams but Harikrishna said the Aronian-Adams, though ended in a draw, was not an easy one. —Venkatachari Jagannathan

The 29-year old Advani, speaking to the media on the sidelines of a felicitation function here Saturday within hours after returning

from England, said he was not thinking so much about results as evolving into a better player when asked whether he would add a fifth World title on November 29. The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India secretary S. Balasubramaniam presented Advani a cash prize of `350,000. Advani has won 12 World titles and the expectations are high that he would add one more to the tally by winning IBSF World snooker championship crown this month.

At the outset of the hearing, a bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla said they have yet to go through the report. “Report has come. None of us (Justice Thakur and Justice Kalifulla) has been able to see it,” the court said as senior counsel Harish Salve said that probe report was submitted to the court November 3. At this, senior counsel C.A. Sundaram, appearing for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), urged the court to see the conclusion of the report and if there was nothing against any of the

office bearers, then that can be disclosed. Making it clear that his main concern was November 20 BCCI general body meeting, Sundaram said that he was addressing the court on all the office bearers and not just N. Srinivasan who as of now stands side-lined as BCCI chief. At this, Justice Thakur observed: “Let us say there is no finding against Srinivasan but there is something against someone close to him, then what will be the situation.” After the hearing the court adjourned the hearing till November 14.

Chowdary was one of the strong TDP voices against division of Andhra Pradesh and he drew the attention with his protest in Rajya Sabha during the debate on the state reorganization bill. He grew stronger in the party and was made leader of TDP parliamentary wing. Naidu also appointed him as head of the resources management committee for pooling financial resources for the state after its bifurcation. Also a member of the panel formed to advise the government on development of new state capital, Chowdary gained prominence in the party. No wonder then that he was the obvious choice of Naidu when Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked TDP chief to nominate a leader for the cabinet berth.

Pandurang Dhavalikar (both Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party) were also sworn-in as cabinet ministers. Earlier in the day, BJP state leaders as well as central observers Rajeev Pratap Rudy and Purshottam Rupala were busy fire-fighting dissent sparked by D’Souza who had insisted on refusing to work with Parsekar or Arlekar, claiming both were junior to him. “I am still in the race for chief minister. I will speak to the party’s observers and make my point clear. I will quit government,” he said.

Karnataka, AP to share river water BENGALURU: Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on November 10 agreed to modernize canals on Tungabhadra’s right bank for sharing the river water between the two states. “A proposal will be sent to the Tungabhadra River Management Board for modernizing the canals,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters after a meeting with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu and officials here. Modernization of the high and low level canals will not only plug seepages, but also improve the river water flow into Andhra Pradesh. As 32 TMC (thousand million cubic) litres of water is going waste due to seepage and silt accumulation on the river bed every year, modernization will help flow of water released from the Tungabhadra dam in the state to irrigate fields in Kurnool, Kadapa and Ananthapur districts.

‘Appuchi Graamam’, a scientific-fiction story in ‘Malgudi Days’ style IANS, CHENNAI

D

ebutant filmmaker Vi Anand describes his forthcoming Tamil movie Appuchi Graamam, which releases in cinemas on November 14, as a science-fiction story enveloped in the style that R.K. Narayan’s Malgudi Days was told. “It’s actually a village drama with science-fiction element as the backdrop. I’ve handled this film the way Malgudi Days was shot. The filmmaking style is very sim-

ple. We’ve captured the life in a village as realistically as possible and never tried to enhance the viewing experience with any gimmicks,” Anand told IANS. The film’s script was inspired by a newspaper article Anand read in his childhood. “The article was about a small village near Erode (in Tamil Nadu). When news about ‘end of the world’ broke out, people in this village were so much in panic that they decided to celebrate every living minute. They started celebrat-

ing with family and friends because they felt that might be their last day on earth,” he said. “What inspired me was that how the news about the ‘end’ had so much effect on the lives of these people in the small village. The core idea of the film is that when we know about the time and day of our death, we tend to be different from how we used to live,” he added. Anand decided that the only way he could talk about the ‘end of the word’ in his story if he includ-

ed an element of natural disaster. “I stumbled upon research information that meteorites and asteroids are among the top ten threats to mankind. Thus, the sci-fi angle was justified,” he said. “I never wanted to do a story about an asteroid hitting a village. It’s the other way around. I wanted to capture the human emotions when death is upon us and we can’t do anything about it. When tsunami struck us a few years ago, there was so much of drama in it required for a film’s story,” Anand added.

Never said no to working with Salman: Deepika

‘Bombairiya’ is challenging: Siddhartha NEW DELHI: Actor Siddhanth Kapoor says with his next film Bombairiya, which will go on the floors next month, he will step into a “different zone” with the “challenging” role. “The film lies in a very different zone for me as the role is pretty challenging with a lot of chase sequences,” Siddhartha told IANS over phone from Mumbai. “I play a local courier boy who is not from Mumbai. He is trying to fit in the scene, but he knows how to get his work done. In the film, he gets involved in a conspiracy and the story revolves around how he finds a way out.”

he’s worked with Shah Rukh Khan thrice, but Deepika Padukone is yet to share the same frame with Salman Khan. She says she’s never said no to a project starring the Dabangg star, and that destiny will decide when they’ll work together. Rumor mills were abuzz that Deepika had refused to work in Salman-starrer Kick, which was offered to her. Rubbishing this, she said: “Who am I to refuse anyone? I don’t have the power or the position to do so. I have never said I don’t want to work with Salman Khan. In fact, I want to work with him. But I think each film is as per destiny. “If it is meant to happen, it will happen no matter how hard you work on your dates. It will happen only if it has to.” Deepika recently turned sporty on the sets of her forthcoming film Piku. The daughter of ace badminton player Prakash Padukone, couldn’t resist into indulging in the game, post the shooting of the film. ho says remakes can never be as good as the originals? Abhishek Sharma’s new-age rendering of Basu Chatterjee’s Shaukeen is a smartened-up avatar of the original. It’s the smartphone of the current generation as compared with landline version of the comedy that Chatterjee made over 30 years ago. Thanks to Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sai Kabir’s writing, the characters are spunkier and more rounded even when they appear to be as curvaceous as Haydon. In principle, The Shaukeens hijacks only the basic idea of the original film. Three 60-plus men get lustfully attracted to a PYT (pretty young thing). Incidentally, the PYT from Basu-da’s film has now metamorphosed into a sad boring housewife in The Shaukeens. A tragic bit of self-reference that makes no sense. But we are digressing. The three

over-the-hill lechers in The Shaukeens, played with dignified horniness by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra, are as dangerous as a child with a toy gun. A tone of ironical self-mocking bravado runs throughout the two-

All three actors, seen in a collective huddle of jaded horniness, give off their best performances portraying their sexually famished characters with a mix of childlike guilelessness and over-ripened curiosity. In fact, she wants to grow them longer now. “I don't know if I would chop my hair for any role, no matter how fascinating it will be. I love my hair...and by cutting them, I will lose my hair brand endorsement,” Kareena told IANS. She said she's growing her hair. Kareena, who is known to be picky about her films, has given a heads up to filmmaker Anand L Rai for a woman-centric project, which is likely to go on the floors in January 2015. “Kareena is the hero of the film. The film doesn’t have a very serious subject. It’s a woman-oriented lighthearted comedy with an intriguing storyline. It will also star several other good supporting actors, which is something that’s always seen in all of Anand’s films,” says an industry insider, adding that Kareena, 34, gave her nod to the film as she found the film’s subject very interesting. The film, based in Uttar Pradesh will be directed by Anand and will supposedly be shot in Lucknow. Currently, Kareena is shooting for her next in Delhi.

Indian faces 20-yr jail term for fake debt collection scheme BY A STAFF WRITER

ACRAMENTO, CA -- Kirit D. Patel, 71, of Tracy, has pleaded guilty to four counts of mail fraud and wire fraud, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. According to court documents, Patel was the owner and president of Broadway Global Master, a company that purported to be a debt collection company. From 2010 to 2012, callers operating from outside the US placed more than two million phone calls to consumers in which they impersonated law enforcement officers and threatened to arrest the consumers if they did not provide immediate payment for online payday loans that the callers claimed were delinquent. In most cases, the consumers did not owe delinquent loans and the callers did not have the authority to collect the debts from those who did owe any balances on payday loans. Broadway Global Master processed

consumers’ payments when they eventually relented and paid the non-existent debts to avoid the continued threat of arrest. From 2010 to 2012, Patel’s company received more than $5 million in payments

from consumers, most of which was immediately transferred out of the country. This case is the product of an investigation by the US Secret Service. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew G. Morris is prosecuting the criminal case. In April 2012, the Federal Trade Commission filed a civil lawsuit against Patel and his two companies (2:12-cv-855JAM) alleging violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Patel is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge John A. Mendez on February 10, 2015. Patel faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account several variables.

Indian scientist uses dance to explain research, honored BY A STAFF WRITER

TLANTA (GA) -- An Indian scientist who danced to explain her research on tornadoes, has won the top prize in the 2014 “Dance Your PhD” contest. Uma Nagendra is a researcher doing her PhD at the University of Georgia. The “Dance Your PhD” contest, the results of which were officially announced on November 3, is a competition in which researchers explain their dissertations using creative movements like dance. Nagendra said her PhD focuses on how several different species of tree seedlings in the southern Appalachian Mountains interact with soil organisms and how tornadoes might mix things up. “I use a combination of greenhouse and field experiments to investigate how tornadoes can change not only what plants grow in an area, but also how they interact with each other — through the soil,” she said. The researcher said that she started taking dance trapeze classes at Canopy Studio in Athens, Georgia about two years ago.

“I like that it helps me use a different part of my brain after a long day of looking at data. It’s a different way of challenging yourself, both creatively and physically,” she said. “One of my first trapeze instructors is a researcher in the genetics department, and several former graduate students in my program did trapeze and silks at Canopy for many years,” Nagendra added.

Entries for the contest are divided into four main categories — Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Social Science. The winner from each of these categories receives $500. The overall winner receives another $500 and a trip to Stanford University for a screening of the dance at a publishing conference sponsored by High Wire Press.

WOMAN GETS16 YRS FOR RUNNING BOGUS UNIVERSITY

S

BY A STAFF WRITER

AN FRANCISCO (CA) -- A San Francisco Bay Area woman was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for running what prosecutors said was a sham university that served as a front for an immigration scam. Susan Xiao-Ping Su, founder and president of the phony Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, was accused of charging hundreds of foreigners, mostly Indian nationals, tuition and other payments for visa-related documents that allowed them to live and work in the US while she purported that they were here legally to study. She made more than $5.6 million and used the money to buy commercial real estate, a Mercedes Benz and multiple homes, including one at a golf club, federal prosecutors said. US District Court Judge Jon S. Tigar on November 7 sentenced Su, 44, after she was convicted in March of visa fraud and other charges. She was also ordered

to forfeit $5.6 million and pay more than $900,000 in restitution to two companies that processed payments from students. Su’s attorney John Jordan has filed a notice of appeal with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“Student visas are intended to give people from around the world a chance to come to this country to enrich themselves with the vast learning opportunities available here,” Tatum King, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations, San Francisco, said in a statement. “But in this case, the defendant was interested in a different kind of enrichment, her own.” Most of the students appeared to know they were taking part in a fraudulent scheme, said Mitchell Rose, a supervisory special agent with Homeland Security Investigations in San Francisco. They received visa-related documents in exchange for about $2,700 a semester, Rose said. Many of them left the country on their own after the school was raided in 2011, while others applied to regain their student status. The Tri-Valley case is not unique in the Bay Area. He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial next month. In the Tri-Valley case, employees testified that the school had no graduation and admission requirements, and that Su instructed her staff to fabricate transcripts and other documents. Some professors said Su used their names, though they did not teach at Tri-Valley or have any connection to the school. Tri-Valley described itself as a “Christian higher education institution” that provided higher education in engineering, business and ministry, according to court documents. But Rose said investigators found purported classes were non-existent or had technical problems. Attendance at legitimate online classes was sparse, but the students obtained high grades, nonetheless.

PRINGFIELD, MASS., Almost three million Asian Indians in the United States celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, on Oct. 23. For the more than 300,000 Asian-Indian owned firms* in the U.S., the holiday takes on an added dimension, as the celebration marks the beginning of a new business year. To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali. In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth. It is said the goddess of wealth, known as Lakshmi, visits the homes of devotees on this day, and lamps light the way to welcome her. A MassMutual study** found that although 77 percent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 percent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies; only 46

percent have a formal retirement plan. “Entrepreneurial businesses are vital to our growing economic recovery, so it is concerning that so many business owners seem to be sacrificing their own and their family’s financial future,” says Nimesh Trivedi, Asian-Indian Market lead at MassMutual. “With help, business owners can look past the seemingly overwhelming day-to-day demands of running their businesses and establish and meet their long-term financial goals.” To help Asian Indian business owners open their new books this Diwali and plan for a prosperous new year, MassMutual is offering a series of free video-based seminars featuring stories shared by real business owners. The vignettes explore critical business planning topics, such as passing ownership on from one generation to the next, preparing for the unexpected, the death of an owner, retaining key employees, and proper estate and retirement planning. Seminars addressing these topics critical to Asian Indian business owners were presented in the following cities across the country this Diwali: • Houston, Oct. 14 • Atlanta: Oct. 18 • San Jose, Calif.: Oct. 24 • Edison, N.J.: Oct. 29

Man pulls out gun to scare pre-teen BY A STAFF WRITER

M

ADISON, WI – A 12-year-old Madison boy has told the police that a man pulled a gun on him when he was out riding his long board in the afternoon on November 11. The boy was in a cross-walk on N. Sherman Avenue when a van driver pulled into his path, butting him off. The boy got off his board and walked around the front of the van, which was stopped. That’s when the passenger lifted up a gun and pulled the slide back, as if to chamber a round. The boy fled to a friend’s home and told his parents about his frightening encounter. The police were notified the next day. A description of the vehicle is a white van, possibly a Dodge Sprinter, with a green design on the sides and back. The victim says the design looked like

vines. The driver of the vehicle was a white female, in her 30’s, with light brown hair pulled into a ponytail. The passenger was a black male, also in his 30’s, with a large build. He’s described as having puffy hair worn under a flat brimmed baseball cap, and was wearing a black sweatshirt or jacket.

Top trends for hair blowouts IANS, LOS ANGELES

W

ith everyone getting their hair blown out for everyday events and even just to go to work, there is no other option but to follow the coolest trend. It is important to pick the best trend. Jenny Randhawa, the franchise partner of the Blo Blow Dry Bar in the lower mainland of British Columbia, answers some of the common queries related to top blowout trends for fall, reports huffingtonpost.com. * What are the top trends for blowouts this season? - Texture! Lots of layered waves brought into pieces. Some of it is a bohemian wave with a more polished finish, also known as mermaid waves. Super sleek or undone and dishevelled ballerina buns and deep side parts are very on-trend right now. * How can a person effectively communicate what they would like do with their blowouts? - Bring in a photo. Words like texture, wave and curl can mean

different things to different people! Make sure you have prepared yourself by looking at pictures for inspiration and really think about what you want the end result to be. Hand gestures when explaining your desired style also help!

* Is there anything that a person should not do before a blowouts appointment? - Avoid pre-washing and putting in product beforehand. It gives the stylist a better understanding of what your hair needs if your hair is fresh before the blowouts. If there is a product you love, bring it in for the stylist to apply in your hair.
