KOLKATA: A documentary on Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen was refused a green signal by the Indian censor board over the use of words ‘cow’, ‘Gujarat’, ‘Hindu India’ and ‘Hindutva’, used by Sen in the film, generating anger, shock and cries of “fascism” from the opposition, auteurs and writers. The Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) move was prompted by documentary maker Suman Ghosh’s refusal to bow to its diktat that the four words uttered by the Bharat Ratna awardee during an interview in the film “An Argumentative Indian” be muted.
MUMBAI: There is more disheartening news for the already delayed Jagaa Jasoos. Due to last minute post-production activities, the film missed its release in the UAE, Dubai and Singapore on july 13. But the good news is that the film makes it for its July 14 release in the nick of time. The film’s co-producer Bimal Parekh admits there has been a costly delay. “We could not open in UAE , Dubai and Singapore on Thursday morning. We had a choice of opening with the evening shows. But we decided against it. Rather than taking a risk (with the release), we decided to open on Friday along with all the other centers in India and overseas.” —IANS

Trump Jr releases email relating to meeting with Russian lawyer Emails provide details about the meeting with an individual identified as “the Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow.”
Russian lawyer refutes Trump’s son’s Clinton claims
IANS, WASHINGTON
D
onald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son, released the email chain relating to his meeting with a Russian attorney who allegedly promised to provide incriminating information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. In one email, publicist Rob Goldstone, who set up the meeting, tells Trump Jr. that the Russian lawyer would provide “some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father,” Efe news reports. “This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Trump,” Goldstone said in the email. “Seems we have some time and if it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer,” Trump Jr. replied on June 3, 2016. Other emails provide details about the meeting with an individual identified as “the Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow.” Trump Jr. indicated that he would probably attend the meeting with the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-campaign
WikiLeaks caused Hillary’ defeat in US LONDON: Criticism by documents posted by global whistleblower WikiLeaks on Twitter played a key role in the failure of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 US presidential race, an analysis of tweets suggests. The study, which analysed viral tweets during the final two months of the 2016 election race, showed that Clinton was much more heavily criticized on the microblogging site as compared to her rival. Posts relating to WikiLeaks were the most common form of attack on social media for Clinton, who was also heavily criticized on Twitter over an FBI investigation into her use of a private email. “Our findings reveal a wide disparity between traditional media, which was very critical of Trump, and social media, where Hillary Clinton was much worse off,” said lead researcher Walid Magdy.

chairman Paul Manafort. Kushner, senior White House adviser, and Manafort are being targeted by investigators looking for evidence of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. The Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, said in an exclusive interview with NBC News before the emails’ release that she had no links to the Kremlin and provided no incriminating information
about Clinton. “I never had any damaging or sensitive information about Hillary Clinton. It was never my intention to have that,” Veselnitskaya said. The lawyer, however, said it was possible that Trump Jr. thought she might have such information. “It is quite possible that maybe they were longing for such an information. They wanted it so badly that they could only hear the thought that they wanted,” Vesel-
WASHINGTON: The Russian lawyer at the centre of allegations surrounding US President Donald Trump’s eldest son has insisted she was never in possession of information that could have damaged Hillary Clinton, media reports said. Natalia Veselnitskaya, who has been linked to the Russian government, said Donald Trump Jr. and two senior campaign aides may have met her last summer because they were “longing” for such information, the BBC reported. “It is quite possible that maybe they were longing for such information. They wanted it so badly that they could only hear the thought that they wanted,” Veselnitskaya told NBC in an interview. “I never had any damaging or sensitive information about Hillary Clin-

ton. It was never my intention to have that,” she said. She said the meeting was set up by a man she did not know who told her by telephone to go to Trump Tower, adding that Donald Trump Jr. asked her just one question during the meeting. “The question that I was asked was as follows: Whether I had any financial records which might prove that the funds used to sponsor the DNC (Democratic National Committee) were coming from inappropriate sources,” Veselnitskaya said. She denied ever having worked for the Russian government. In a tweet sent after Veselnitskaya’s interview, Donald Trump Jr accused the media and Democratic Party of focusing on a “nonsense meeting” and of “desperation”.

Trump says he gets along ‘very well’ with Putin IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump said that he got along “very well” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a meeting at the G20 summit last week. “I think we get along very well and I think that’s a good thing, that’s not a bad thing,” Trump said this week in an exclusive interview with Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), an American television network. “We are a tremendously powerful nuclear power, and so are they. It doesn’t make sense not to have some kind of a relationship,” Trump added. Trump also emphasized the importance of having a dialogue with Russia despite the differences between Washington and Moscow. “I do believe it’s important to

have a dialogue and if you don’t have a dialogue, it’s a lot of problems for our country and for their country. I think we need dialogue. We need dialogue with everybody,” he said. During the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the
US and Russia, a cease-fire agreement in parts of Syria was struck in a bid to curb the bloodshed that has impacted both sides in the wartorn Middle East nation. “One thing we did is we had a cease-fire in a major part of Syria where there was tremendous bed-
lam and tremendous killing. And, by the way, this is now four days. The cease-fire has held for four days. Those (previous) cease-fires haven’t held at all. That’s because President Putin and President Trump made the deal, and it’s held,” Trump said in the interview. The interview came amid ongoing investigations into allegations that Trump’s team colluded with the Russians to help him win last year’s presidential election. Trump said he thinks Putin would actually have been happier with Hillary Clinton in the White House. “As an example, if Hillary had won, our military would be decimated. Our energy would be much more expensive. That’s what Putin doesn’t like about me. And that’s why I say, why would he want me? Because from day one I wanted a strong military, he doesn’t want to see that,” Trump added.

he widely condemned attack on Amarnath pilgrims by militants in Kashmir has left many questions unanswered including why security forces failed to secure the route to the pilgrimage site despite specific intelligence inputs that terrorists planned a “sensational” strike to kill 100-150 Hindus and stoke communal unrest in the country. The attack on Monday night in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir led to the death of seven pilgrims and injuries to 19 others. Muneer Khan, the police chief in the Kashmir Valley had in a June 25 note shared an intelligence input received from a south Kashmir police officer that “terrorists have been directed to eliminate 100 to 150 yatris and 100 police officers... which they believe will result in flaring of communal tensions through-
BRIEFS Gopalkrishna Gandhi candidate for VP NEW DELHI: Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was on Tuesday named the Opposition candidate for the post of Vice President by the Congress and 17 other parties, including the JD-U, which is backing the BJP candidate in the President’s election. Congress President Sonia Gandhi announced the name of Gandhi.
All-party meet on India-China border row NEW DELHI: The government has called an all party meet on Friday on the stand-off between Indian and Chinese troops along the border, government sources said on Thursday. The meeting is aimed at briefing the Opposition parties about the situation along the border in Sikkim.
SRINAGAR: A massive manhunt has been launched in Jammu and Kashmir for Pakistani LeT terrorist Muhammad Abu Ismail, who, according to police sources, headed the group that attacked a bus carrying Amarnath yatris, killing seven pilgrims. Police sources here said the 26year old Ismail infiltrated into the Valley two years back and has since
been carrying on terror activities in south Kashmir area. “Abu Ismail with at least one foreign terrorist and two to three local terrorists of LeT carried out the attack on the Yatra bus on Monday,” said a source. “The terrorists came on two motorcycles and fired at least a hundred rounds from their automatic weapons at the bus at two places,” said a source.
Trump condemns terrorist attack on Amarnath pilgrims WASHINGTON: Pledging to continue alongside India in fighting terrorism, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday condemned the terrorist killing of seven Amarnath pilgrims as an attack on religious freedom. “An attack on religious freedom is an attack on the most fundamental right of liberty,” a White House state-
out the country”. Khan had said the input was to be corroborated but did not rule out “the possibility of some sensational attack by terrorist outfits” at a time when thousands of pilgrims daily trek to the cave shrine situated deep in the Himalayas of south Kashmir. The input was not specific but it warned of exactly what happened in Botengoo village on Monday night. The security forces still failed to act. Why?
ment said. “The United States and India will continue to fight together against terrorist threats in every part of the world.” The statement issued by Trump’s Press Secretary Sean Spicer made a clear reference to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, dispelling an earlier controversy over the State
Department calling it “Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.” “The United States strongly condemns the cowardly terrorist attack on religious pilgrims in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on July 10,” the statement said. “We extend condolences to the victims’ families and the people of India.”
The unescorted bus carrying the pilgrims breached security protocol and moved on the Jammu-Srinagar highway at a time when it was not supposed to. The attack occurred around 8.30 p.m. As per the security norms, no vehicle carrying Amarnath pilgrims should be allowed to move after 7 in the evening when Quick Response Teams of the security forces withdraw from the highway. The movement at the wrong time made the
Gujarat-registered vehicle vulnerable to attack. The Jammu and Kashmir government has admitted to security lapses. Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh on Tuesday said the attack needed to be probed. “Yes, definitely this is a big lapse. We have to enquire why the bus left at 5 p.m., why it was allowed after sunset. We were told there was a tyre burst and the driver took time to replace it,” he said.
Muslim driver recalls bus attack horror SURAT: Call it Salim Sheikh Gafoor’s sheer presence of mind or quick thinking, but it saved for sure over 50 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims from certain death during Salim Sheikh a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, though he himself attributes his heroism to the Almighty. “The moments I heard the gunshots, I bent down a bit while holding the steering wheel and pressed the accelerator. It seems God gave me a lot of physical and mental strength and I began driving at around 70-80 km per hour,” Sheikh told media persons here on Tuesday while recalling his brush with death along with the passengers. “Harshbhai, who was sitting next to me in the bus, was hit by a bullet. The passengers were screaming and asking me to stop the bus. But I didn’t, as had I applied the brakes even for a minute, I knew for sure that nobody in the bus, including me, would survive the attack,” said the Muslim driver, who has been hailed for saving the 50-odd Amarnath pilgrims. Expressing sadness over the incident, he recalled that each one of the 60-odd pilgrims in the bus was happy after a ‘darshan’ of Lord Shiva and their visit to Srinagar.

day after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked him to come clean, RJD leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday dubbed the corruption charges against him a “conspiracy” hatched by the BJP brass. Tejashwi Yadav, facing an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), also made light of the allegations against him, saying they relate to a period when he was 14 years old. As for the ruling Grand Alliance of the JD-U, RJD and Congress, he declared that it was intact and would remain so. After attending his first cabinet meeting since the CBI raids against him, Tejashwi Yadav, the younger son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, said the corruption allegations against him were a pack of lies. “This allegation relates to 2004 when I was merely 14 years old, when my moustache and beard had not begun to sprout. Do you think a minor would have committed a scam?” He said the Grand Alliance won’t break.

India-China:
DANGEROUS BRINKMANSHIP
“Not a single bullet had been fired along the border between India and China for 40 years,” said Modi TARUN BASU, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi said very proudly during a visit to Russia last month that not a single bullet had been fired along the border between India and China for 40 years. “It is true that we have a border dispute with China. But in the last 40 years, not a single bullet has been fired because of border dispute,” Modi said in a panel discussion at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Modi spoke in the context of an “inter-connected and inter-dependent world” where, he said, countries may have some disputes but that should not stop them from moving ahead in “areas of collaboration”, like India and China were doing. In December 1996, when then
state President and Communist Party of China (CPC) General Secretary Jiang Zemin visited Pakistan after a trip to India, he made a very significant statement before the Pakistan National Assembly. Speaking to Pakistani lawmakers, Jiang advised Pakistan to adopt the IndiaChina template in their dealings

Pakistan may not have paid heed to Jiang’s advise, but with peace and tranquility being maintained on the border through a series of agreements, China and India had managed to keep the peace between
China’s bellicose position, coupled with a sharp escalation of threatening rhetoric, is consistent with its recent posturing over territorial and geostrategic issues with New Delhi and not let contentious issues come in the way of the development of their relationship on other fronts, particularly trade and business, and people-topeople ties. “If certain issues cannot be resolved for the time being, they

trade and economic relationships to a level that made them critical elements of each other’s growth story. But the inexorable rise of strongman Xi Jinping coincided with muscular projections of Chinese authority and power on issues that it considered were “core” to its strategic and foundational principles, whether it be the South China Sea, Tibet, or the Belt and Road project that stood to seal China’s role as a global mercantile power. As Xi moves to establish complete authority over all organs of party, government and military to become one of the strongest leaders of the People’s Republic in recent times, it
is clear that China has moved much beyond previous supremo Deng Xiaoping’s dictum of “Lie low, bide your time”. China thinks its time is now and whatever it does will be in consonance and pursuit of this “Chinese dream” to become one of the world’s pre-eminent economic, military and political powers in what Xi terms “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”. In line with this political philosophy, China is flexing its muscle, reasserting sovereignty and expanding its arc of influence much beyond the South China Sea, to South Asia, Africa and even to Latin America.
‘Recession of Himalayan glaciers alarming’ The main glacier in the Bhilangna basin has receded 4,340 meters since 1965 and fragmented into multiple valley glaciers, resulting in loss of 10 per cent of glacier area K.S. JAYARAMAN, BENGALURU
A
nalysis of satellite images have revealed an “alarming recession” of glaciers in the Bhilangna basin of the Garhwal Himalayas from 1965, scientists at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have said. Home to 9,575 glaciers (as per a Geological Survey of India inventory) the Himalayas are considered to have the largest concentration of glaciers outside the Polar regions. Snow and melt water from the glaciers is the major source of water for the large river basins, the Indus and the Ganges. The Bhilangna basin is bounded by the Bhagirati group of glaciers in north and west and the Mandakini group of glaciers in east. The basin supports 33 glaciers, of which Khatling is the largest. in the basin contribute to the source of Bhilangna river — southernmost tributary of the Bhagirathi. The ISRO scientists found that this main glacier had receded 4,340 meters since 1965
and had fragmented into multiple valley glaciers resulting in the total loss of 10 per cent of glacier area. Glacier status in Bhilangna basin was assessed from high resolution imageries obtained in 1965
by the Corona satellite of the United States and comparing these with photos taken in 2014 by ISRO’s Cartosat satellite. Additionally, data from the Linear Imaging Self-Scanning Sensor of
ISRO’s Resourcesat-2 satellite launched in 2016 were also used for the analysis. “All the glaciers in the basin show significant recession from 1965 to 2014,” Babu Govindha Raj, ISRO scientist and lead author of the report, published in the open access publication “Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk, 2017”, told this correspondent. “However, recession of the Khatling glacier from 1965 to 2014 is alarming in comparison to that of neighboring Bhagirathi and Mandakini group of glaciers in the basin,” Raj added. The satellite image interpretation and field evidence show that morphology and dynamics of the Khatling glacier has a strong influence on its faster recession, says the report. “The glacier fragmentation creates smaller glaciers that are more prone to faster melting than the larger trunk glaciers.”

WASHINGTON: An Indian citizen in the US has pleaded guilty to funnelling thousands of dollars to an Al Qaeda leader in Yemen and trying to orchestrate the killing of a judge, federal prosecutors said. Yahya Farooq Mohammad, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide and conceal material support or resources to terrorists and one count of solicitation to commit a crime of violence, the Justice Department said in a statement. Mohammad, who married an American citizen in 2008, faces over
27 years in prison and deportation if convicted, the statement said. “He is a dangerous criminal who deserves a long prison sentence,” said David A. Sierleja, the Acting US Attorney for northern Ohio. Mohammad, who studied engineering at Ohio State University from 2002 to 2004, was one of four people arrested in 2015 and charged with plotting to travel to Yemen to provide $22,000 to former Al Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki years earlier, NBC News reported. — IANS

n Indian-origin boy with an allergy to dairy products has died after suffering a severe reaction to a piece of cheese allegedly forced on him in his school, prompting an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Karanbir Cheema, 13, died last weekend after he suffered a severe reaction to the piece of cheese at his school in Greenford, west London, last month during a break, the Guardian reported this week. It has been claimed the boy was “forced to eat” the cheese but others said it was “flicked at his face” while his mother claimed the food was “rubbed against his neck”, according to reports. Cheema’s mother demanded answers about whether her son was bullied. A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was released on bail

pending further inquiries and the case was passed to homicide officers. Cheema’s father, Amarjeet, told the Evening Standard newspaper that he was heartbroken. “We were in hospital I had to watch him die,
piece of cheese hitting him could have killed him. We have been told very little.” A postmortem was scheduled to establish the cause of what the Met described as “an unexplained death”. The head of William Perkin C of E high school, where Karanbir was a pupil, said he was treated immediately in the school before paramedics arrived.
However, the deceased boy’s mother Rina demanded answers as to how her son, who led a normal life despite his allergies, had managed to become exposed to the cheese. She claimed police and the school kept her in the dark about the events which led to Cheema’s death. “I want answers, I want to get to the bottom of what happened, I will be asking the school if he was bullied but my son was very popular, you could not help but like that child, he never made enemies.” Cheema was allergic to wheat, gluten, all dairy products, eggs and all nuts and his condition was wellknown at school, said the report. Alice Hudson, executive headteacher of the school, told the Evening Standard that the boy on June 28 had come to the school office to tell staff that he was having a bad reaction to some cheese and staff gave him medication.

Panamagate: Will Nawaz Sharif quit? Call for the Pakistan PM to step aside grows louder in view of the Panamagate Joint Investigation Team probing corruption charges against him and his family

leading Pakistani newspaper on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to “do the right thing (in) democracy and step aside, at least temporarily” in view of the corruption charges he faces. The Dawn admitted in an editorial that the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report submitted to the Supreme Court on the Sharif family’s assets held abroad as revealed by the Panama Papers was not a perfect document. “But the JIT report has laid out a number of very serious and specific allegations against Prime Minister Sharif and his children. Simply, no democratic order ought to have a Prime Minister operating under such a dark cloud of suspicion,” it said. It said the ruling PML-N party may urge Sharif to stay on in office and Sharif may be tempted to do so, “but the toll on democracy would be too great. “The Prime Minister has a clear

But Pakistan “does not need and cannot afford the distraction of an incumbent Prime Minister fight-
ing corruption charges in the courts”. The editorial found fault with the Sharif family in not going the extra mile to provide evidence and explanations to the satisfaction of the investigators. “Sharif may have his doubts about the fairness of the system, but the system has doubts about him. The system must prevail over the personal.”

The JIT, which is probing allegations of money laundering against Sharif and his family, said Maryam Nawaz, her brothers Hussain and Hassan Nawaz as well as her husband Captain Mohammad Safdar (retd), had signed false documents to mislead the Supreme Court. n enormous iceberg has broken off from a key floating ice shelf in Antarctica, scientists have announced. The iceberg weighs a staggering trillion tonnes and has an area of 5,800 sq km. It was found to have split off from the Larsen C segment of the ice shelf on Wednesday after scientists examined the
satellite data from the area, the Daily Mail reported. Scientists at the University of Swansea in Britain said they were expecting it. They had been following the development of a large crack in Larsen’s ice for more than a decade. The final break happened between Monday and Wednesday and the calving of the iceberg, which is likely to be named A68, reduces

the size of the ice Shelf by around 12 per cent, said researchers. They said it will change the landscape of the Antarctic penin-
out to be completely wrong and it was proven that she owned the properties managed by Minerva Services. The JIT concluded that Sharif’s daughter was the real and ultimate beneficial owner of the Avenfield apartments. It said that the font used in documents submitted by Maryam Nawaz suggested that the 2006 declarations were fake and called it a federal crime, said a report in the Express Tribune. Maryam Nawaz was also accused of accumulating “assets disproportionate and beyond means of known sources of income”, Dawn newspaper reported. The JIT’s report said: “She had been receiving heavy gifts from Rs 73.5 million to Rs 830.73 million within period of 2009-2016.” It said that the “accumulation of Maryam’s assets shows a drastic hike in the early 1990s with no declared source of income”.
Uncertainty over Baghadadi’s fate WASHINGTON: The international coalition, led by the US, cannot confirm Tuesday’s announcement by a British-based monitoring group that claimed that the leader of the Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had died. In an email statement to Efe news agency, US Army Col. Joe Scrocca, director of public affairs for the Combined Joint Task Force, said: “We cannot confirm this report, but hope it is true.“
sula forever, ITV News reported. “We have been anticipating this event for months, and have been surprised how long it took for the rift to break through the final few kilometers of ice,” said Professor Adrian Luckman of Swansea University, lead investigator of the project. “We will continue to monitor both the impact of this calving event on the Larsen C Ice Shelf, and the fate of this huge iceberg. “The iceberg is one of the largest recorded and its future progress is difficult to predict. It may remain in one piece but is more likely to break into fragments,” Professor Luckman said.

fter much drama and controversy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this week that Ravi Shastri has been selected as the new coach of the Indian cricket team. The other members of the coaching staff were also announced with former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan appointed bowling coach and former star batsman Rahul Dravid appointed as overseas batting consultant. The three will guide the Indian team till the 2019 ODI World Cup. “As part of the process for selecting the Head Coach, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Bopanna advances, Sania loses at Wimbledon WIMBLEDON: Indian stars Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza encountered contrasting fortunes in their respective mixed doubles matches at the Wimbledon tennis tournament here this week. Bopanna and his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski defeated the Croatian pair of Nikola Mektic and Ana Konjuh 7-6, 6-2 in 63 minutes. The 10th seeded Indo-Canadian pair will meet the unseeded duo of Heather Watson of Britain and Henri Kontinen of Finland in the quarterfinals. Watson and Kontinen had defeated fourth seeds Sania and her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig 7-6, 6-4 in an hour and 26 minutes. Swiss star Roger Federer defeated Canadian Milos Raonic in straight sets to cruise into the men’s singles semi-finals at the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The 35-year-old Federer, who has
yet to drop a set in this tournament, needed almost two hours to carve out a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory late on Wednesday evening, reports Efe. Federer has thus avenged his defeat to Raonic in a five-set epic at last year’s Wimbledon. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Federer fired 46 winners and committed just nine unforced errors to get into the semi-finals for the 12th time at the All England Club.
mended these appointments in the best interest of the Indian Cricket,” BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary said in a statement. A veteran of 80 Tests and 150 One-Day Internationals (ODI), the 55-year-old Shastri had earlier served as the Team Director for India’s tour of England in 2014 to the 2016 World T20, where India lost to West Indies. Shastri was overlooked last year and the CAC picked spinner and former skipper Anil Kumble for a one-year term. That term, however, ended on a controversial note after the last month’s ICC Champions Trophy in England. “Shastri has been the Team Director in the past, and brings with him a wealth of experience, both as player and as coach. “Khan is a contemporary crick-
NEW DELHI: Newly-appointed Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri has predicted that the current team led by Virat Kohli can be a better Test unit than any Indian team of the past. Shastri, who served as the Team Director from 2014-2016 returned as the head coach of the side after prolonged deliberations by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising the trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman. The 55-year-old Shastri was given a two-year term till the 2019 ICC World Cup, his first and immediate assignment being the Sri Lanka tour. India are to play three Tests, five OneDay Internationals (ODI) and a one-off T20 International, starting July 26. Exuding confidence in the Kohliled side, the former India all-rounder said the current team has the pedi-
eter who assumed the mentoring role to a young fast bowling unit even during his playing days with India. His inputs will be of immense value to our young fast bowlers, who have shown tremendous potential in the last couple of years,” the statement said. “As the Indian team is to play Test cricket overseas in the next two years, Rahul Dravid’s expertise as batting consultant will be immensely helpful for youngsters.
gree to perform in all conditions. “It can be a better Test team than any Indian team we have had. This is a team you can travel with. There is a battery of pacers which can do well in all conditions. Their age is such that they are playing at the right time,” Shastri was quoted as saying by a news channel from London. Asked about the challenges of coaching the Indian team, especially after his predecessor and former India skipper Anil Kumble’s one-year stint ended on a sour note amid widespread reports of a tiff with Kohli, Shastri said he is up for the challenge. “I have always relished a challenge and I am looking forward to my stint with India. When you are asked to open the batting in overcast conditions, it is a challenge.”
“The board appreciates the contribution of the Cricket Advisory Committee — Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman for recommending these appointments which will take Indian Cricket to greater heights,” it added. The announcement was preceded by several hours of high drama, the BCCI initially refused to deny or confirm widespread media reports that Shastri has been given the coveted post.

‘Regulate stem cell therapies’ Currently only a few conditions can be successfully treated with stem cells, including blood cancers, some immune diseases and severe burns, says a report K.S. JAYARAMAN, BENGALURU

New smartphone app offers non-invasive test for diabetics IANS, LONDON
NEW YORK: A drug already in use to treat malaria and certain autoimmune diseases in pregnant women has shown promise in reducing transmission of Zika virus from mothers to their foetuses, according to a new study led by an Indian-origin researcher. The drug, Hydroxychloroquine, works by inhibiting autophagy, a process by which cells remove toxins and recycle damaged components to generate energy. Researchers showed that Zika virus may manipulate this process in the placenta to infect the developing foetus. In a study published online in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the researchers, led by Indira Mysorekar from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, showed how the drug appeared to reduce transmission of Zika virus from pregnant mice to their foetuses. “Zika virus infection during pregnancy can lead to a devastating array of birth defects, including microcephaly, abnormal reflexes, epilepsy, and problems with vision, hearing and digestion,” said Catherine Spong, Deputy director of US National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), which funded the work. —IANS

ritish scientists have developed a new smartphone app that can help measure and monitor blood glucose levels without using a drop of blood, a finding that can transform lives of millions of people with diabetes. The app — called as Epic Health — replaces the need for diabetics to prick their fingers several times a day. The app, suitable for both Type 1 and 2 diabetics, works by placing a fingertip over the camera lens of a smartphone and capturing a series of close-up images that con-
vey information about the user’s heart rate, temperature and blood pressure to respiration rate and blood oxygen saturation, the researchers said. “The app uses a simple protocol which prompts the user to take a noninvasive test and
this allows us to capture the vital information in a systematic way which produces the most consistent results,” Dominic Wood, founder of the app, was quoted as saying to the express.co.uk. “This is a massive driver of prevention,” and even targets, “everyone yet to be diagnosed with or in the general risk of diabetes when it’s still preventable”, Wood added. Importantly, the Epic app can measure insulin resistance levels — a key way of determining whether someone is pre-diabetic. It does this by measuring the variation in the patient’s pulse which is related to blood glucose concentration.
harm to patients, the authors caution, “unfulfilled promises may bring regenerative medicine research and development into disrepute”. Their report calls for controls on advertising and international standards for the manufacture and testing of cell- and tissue-based therapies, similar to global drug quality standards set by the World Health Organization. “I am against advertisement of stem cell therapies,” S.G. Ananda Rao, a pioneer in stem cell research and founder trustee of Society of Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering in Mumbai, told this correspondent. “We have been combating this menace from 2004 onwards.” The group has also called for tighter regulation of stem cell tourism.

from persistent depression, whereas in women depression tends to be more episodic,” said Jie-Yu Chuang, a researcher at the University of Cambridge. “Compared with women, depressed men are also more likely to suffer serious consequences from their depression, such as substance abuse and suicide,” Chuang added. For the study, recently published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, the team recruited 82 female and 24 male patients who suffered from depression, and 24 female and 10 male healthy volunteers, who were aged between 11 and 18 years.

BENGALURU: Drinking coffee could lead to a longer life, according to a new study reported by US researchers at the University of Southern California (USC). In a study of more than 180,000 participants, the researchers found that people who drank regular or decaffeinated coffee experienced health benefits, such as increased longevity. The researchers report in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine that people who consumed a cup of coffee a day were 12 percent less likely to die earlier compared to those who didn’t drink coffee. This association was even stronger for those who drank two to three cups a day — 18 percent reduced chance of death. Lower mortality was present regardless of whether people drank regular or decaffeinated coffee, suggesting the association is not tied to caffeine.Drinking coffee was also found to be associated with a lower
risk of death due to heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory and kidney disease. The study participants were followed up on the average for 16 years. Claimed to be the largest of its kind, the study had ethnically diverse participants who included AfricanAmericans, Japanese-Americans, Latinos and whites. “Such investigations are important because lifestyle patterns and disease risks can vary substantially across racial and ethnic backgrounds, and findings in one group may not necessarily apply to others.” Since the association (between coffee drinking and longer life) was seen in four different ethnicities, it is safe to say the results apply to other groups, the authors claim. “Seeing a similar pattern across four different populations gives stronger biological backing to the argument that coffee is good for you whether you are white, African-American, Latino or Asian.”

Tomato and cheese bruschetta: Place sliced bread on a baking tray, drizzle extra virgin olive oil,
chopped garlic and any dried spice available in the kitchen cabinet, bake till golden brown. Top with chopped tomatoes, cheese and chopped basil. Pizza pockets: Place pizza dough (cut in 3-inch diameter circles) on a baking tray, drizzle olive oil and chopped garlic, top with chopped tomatoes and pizza sauce, add generous amounts of big cubes of mozzarella and cream cheese. Fold to form a semi-circle (half moon) to seal the edges. Bake at 180 degree Celsius for six to seven minutes. Serve hot with cheese oozing out.
Banana prune and chocolate toasties: Slice a few bananas, get some Del Monte Prunes, break a fruit and nut chocolate bar into small pieces and mix them. Apply butter on both sides of sliced bread or sliced brioche, fill the banana, prunes and chocolate mixture and make toasties in sandwich griller. IIFA at NY: B-Town ‘all set’
‘Life best captured in difficult movies’
The ‘green carpet’ was being rolled out and some film stars had already landed in New York to mesmerize the place for the 18th edition of the gala RADHIKA BHIRANI, NEW YORK
A
t a time when Hollywood is incubating diverse talent like never before, Bollywood is out to mesmerize the US with its magic at the three-day IIFA Weekend and Awards starting on July 13. The “green carpet” is being rolled out and some film stars have already landed here for the 18th edition of the gala, which also goes beyond the Hindi film industry’s glitz and glamour to push discussions around tourism, business opportunities and environment. ‘We are set. When somebody does a big movie and it’s their Friday... You know what it’s like. So for us, Thursday onwards our show starts and we are all nervous. But New York is going to rock,” Andre
BRIEFS Censor board red flags Amartya docu KOLKATA: A documentary on Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen was refused a green signal by the Indian censor board over the use of words ‘cow’, ‘Gujarat’, ‘Hindu India’ and ‘Hindutva’, used by Sen in the film, generating anger, shock and cries of “fascism” from the opposition, auteurs and writers. The Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) move was prompted by documentary maker Suman Ghosh’s refusal to bow to its diktat that the four words uttered by the Bharat Ratna awardee during an interview in the film “An Argumentative Indian” be muted.
‘Jagga Jasoos’ misses overseas release MUMBAI: There is more disheartening news for the already delayed Jagaa Jasoos.

Timmins, Director, Wizcraft International, told IANS. The company has been the producers and creator of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) that had its debut event at the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, Britain, in
2000. It was organized with a meagre budget of Rs 20 lakh, but after travelling to 15 locations across 12 countries and 4 continents, the event has grown in size and scale considerably. This is the first time that the
event will be held in New York — described as the city that never sleeps. The IIFA show was first brought to US at Tampa Bay, Florida in 2014. Jeffrey R. Sexton, the Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs at US Embassy in India, said here: “Films from India now do more business than any other non-English films in the US... It’s also interesting that the Indian entertainment industry has come to the US as a destination for shooting films.” At IIFA show this year, stars like Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapoor, A.R. Rahman, Diljit Dosanjh, Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon, Varun Dhawan, Dia Mirza, Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan will be seen, along with IIFA Awards hosts Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan.
MUMBAI: Acclaimed actress Ratna Pathak Shah, who plays a pivotal role in Lipstick Under My Burkha that locked horns with the censor board, feels the complexities of life are best captured in difficult movies. “The film addresses the uncomfortable truth of our patriarchal society and stopping them (the film’s makers) to release it shows how the patriarchal mindset is suppressing the stories of women…their desire, their dreams, their lives,” Ratna told IANS in an interview. “That is what the film is criticizing — patriarchy. Therefore, there is a change in the trailer as well. The new trailer also addresses the issue that has cropped up... that we were refused to get a certification of our film,” she added. —IANS

The National Award-winning filmmaker’s movie is based on the Emergency in India and characters in the films are inspired by the late

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi. It stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kirti Kulhari, Supriya Vinod, Anupam Kher and Tota Roy Chowdhury.
MUMBAI: Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who has been asked by the censor board to remove words like RSS and Akali from his film Indu Sarkar, says he doesn’t wish to make changes as he fears its essence will get affected. Bhandarkar told IANS: “I don’t want to change anything since it will affect the essence of my film. We will go to the Revising Committee first. Hope it gets cleared there. If not, we will have no option but to go to the Tribunal.” —IANS
The Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, when Indira Gandhi cited grave threat to her government and sovereignty of the country from both internal and external forces. It lasted till March 21, 1977. Indu Sarkar has drawn the ire of the Congress party even before its release. Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam had last week penned a letter to CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, asking for the movie to be screened for them before it is censored. On Monday, the Indore unit of the Congress wrote a letter to the Cine Circuit Association and Cine Grah Sanchalan asking them not to screen the movie.

elhi...soaked in the wispy wetness of monsoon, the shivery tensions of winter, the sweltering sweaty seductiveness of summer... Onir’s latest film, his first since the game-changing envelope pusher I Am, absorbs the changing climate of Delhi during a year of incredible emotional upheavals in the lives of four main characters who are as memorable as they are persuasive in their sexual and emotional impulses. While we soak in the sheer infinity of Onir’s gasping, sighing human relationships as they unfold in a passionate quartet, we notice
Film: “Shab”; Director: Onir; Starring: Raveena Tandon, introducing Ashish Bisht, Arpita Chatterjee, Areesz Gandii, Simon Frenay; Rating: **** how tranquil the surface remains while what lies beneath threatens to erupt any moment. Shab (which means, Night) is the quintessential calm-before-thestorm drama. The raging winds of the four protagonists’ emotions are harnessed tightly but nimbly.
‘Shab’ is a romance drama film directed by Onir.
While Onir’s people are allowed the space to create their own emotional pace, they are barely given a chance to vent their anger and resentment at injustices that life has heaped on them. Each one of Onir’s protagonists is a silent sufferer. There is the aspiring model from a small town, Azfar (newcomer Ashish Bisht), who becomes a toy boy for a rich
bored socialite wife Sonam Modi(Raveena Tandon, in her career’s best performance). Onir sets up the dynamics between the eager-to-please smalltowner and the imperious sexual predator with an erotic fluency that reminded me of the seductive game played in the French rape drama Elle. Of course, no one rapes anyone in Shab.

Members of Patel family, led by HariBhai Patel and his wife Kumud Ben Patel, are dealing with a loss these days. A week ago, MrsDivali Ben Patel, mother to HariBhai passed away. She was 108-years-old. Not only did she have a long life but also she led a very fulfilling and inspiring journey full of various ups and downs. Throughout her life she led by example that if a woman is strong-willed she can make every place her home and instill hope, love and courage to stand together in her family.
THE MATRIARCH WHO UNITED THE FAMILY
T
he Patel clan belongs to a close-knit Gujarati community from a small village called Uttarsanda in Gujarat. They migrated to Chicago from India, about three decades ago. It was Hari Bhai’s two sons Nick (Nimish) and Mayur Patel who came here before their parents and started their life from scratch. They dabbled in a few odd jobs and then set up many businesses. Once they reached a reasonably comfortable level in Chicago they called over their parents and their grandmother to settle in America with them. And though, Patel families’ story may look similar to many other immigrants but what sets this family truly apart is that they have for several decades now maintained a totally comprehensive joint family structure. The family has been able to stay together even while living in America where nuclear families are the norm and kids’ moving out of the house once they are 18 is a pretty common affair.
The family credits this achievement to their immense love and respect for each other. This big family of now ten people comprising HariBhai and his wife, along with their two sons and their wives and four grandchildren live together in Morton Grove in one house. If that’s not inspiring enough, the family also maintains one common kitchen where every day women of the house cook for the entire clan keeping everyone’s tastes and preferences in mind. The family enjoys their

Hari Bhai’s younger son Nick Patel says, “Every year on Thanksgiving we have a family tradition of flying to Miami with our extended families settled all over in the US. So our big family group of about 40 people travels to Miami where we rent family homes and relax, cook and celebrate our bond with each other and Baa used to be the life of our gatherings” He adds, “With Baa’s passing away it’s not just us feeling the loss but the entire clan is going to miss her.”
MRS DIVALI BEN PATEL, A CHICAGO RESIDENT, WHO WAS 108 YEARS OLD PASSED AWAY LAST WEEK. BUT SHE HAS LEFT BEHIND A WONDERFUL LEGACY – A BIG FAMILY UNIT THAT SERVES AS AN INSPIRATION TO EVERYONE THAT JOINT FAMILIES FOLLOWING TRADITIONAL INDIAN VALUES ARE TOTALLY POSSIBLE IN AMERICA.
BAA -- THE CENTRAL FIGURE Everyone from the Patel family agrees on one thing – it was the presence and blessings of their Baa who made it easy for them to stay together as a family. Mrs Divali Ben who was called Baa by not just her family members but by the entire close-knit Gujarati community in Chicago land area was extremely popular not just with the elder generation but even with the younger kids. The family remembers the extraordinary life she lived even after she crossed her 100th birthday. Hari Bhai Patel, remembering his mother says, “She was a woman of steel. She had so much patience and strong will that even past 100 she traveled to India every year to spend some time in her village.” He adds, “Her energy was infectious. While today many middle-aged people begin thinking that they need to slow down in life, she was unstoppable. She would accompany us to various temples in Chicago area and would often visit the Swami Narayan Temple. She would also occasionally travel to spend time with her daughter who’s also settled in the US and is 90 years of age. For her it was the family ties that mattered the most.” Baa’s family remembers her

DURING HER LIFETIME BAA TRAVELED IN EVERYTHING FROM A BAELGARI (BULLOCK CART) IN HER SMALL TOWN IN GUJARAT TO A BENTLEY IN CHICAGO. EVEN AFTER PAST HER 100 YEARS SHE TRAVELED TO INDIA EVERY YEAR, READ NEWSPAPERS AND WAS INDEPENDENT. as an extremely loving figure that could become a child with children. AN EXTRORDINARY LIFE Baa’s life was truly special and she did try and make the most of it. Her grandson Nick Patel recalls, “During her lifetime she rode on everything from a BaelGari (Bullock cart) in her small town to a Bentley in Chicago. She came here when she was already in her 80’s and during this time many old people find it difficult to adjust to a new place. But she took to this change like a fish in water. She was a constant source of courage and would insist on cooking until a few years ago.” Hari Bhai says, “It was quite inspiring that Baa who had never been to school all her life, self educated herself. She was voracious reader and read so many books and literature in Gujarati. Her fondness to learn was so much that if ever she came across any book or newspapers in English or any other language she would try to understand it through pictures. Often her understanding just by looking at the pictures would be perfect. On how a woman her age and from that time had so much intelligence and understanding, the family think that she was truly gifted. HariBhai also says that her strength also came from the fact that she had she had seen many tragedies in her life early on. Those experiences steeled her. He says, “Baa had total 11 children in her lifetime and she saw six of them pass away in front of her eyes. While five of her children died when they were toddlers between the ages of 1-5, she also dealt with the blow of seeing her youngest daughter, who was a dentist in NJ pass away two decades ago. For a mother the hardest thing is to see her children go and Baa dealt with this pain with great patience.” Baa also saw her husband pass away when we were still in India. Perhaps it was these untimely deaths that made her understand the fragility of life and hence she encouraged all her children to live their lives. The family recalls that Baa
The Patel family members celebrate festivities and holiday together
was the most popular member of their family and friends, relatives and acquaintances from their nearby villages in Gujarat, who would travel to America would specially come down to meet her. Nick Patel says, “When Baa was about 100, I advised her not take the long flight to India owing to her age but she somehow convinced by father and continued to travel even when she was 107.” Her child like energy made her a favorite with the kids in the family and for the two brothers’ children who are in their teens and twenties, their great grand mother was a friend and a guide. Nick recalls, “During the past few months when she was unwell we hired two nurses to take care of her and she spread her love even to them that they all became extremely close to each other.” THE FAMILY UNIT One of the most remarkable things about the Patel family is that every member credits another for their ability to live happily as a big unit. Hari Bhai Patel admits that the path to be always together through thick and thin was shown to them by his Baa. But he shows his true gentlemanly side when he says that it would be impossible for him to return the gratitude to his wife Kumud Ben Patel who selflessly all these years took care of Baa and the entire family. He says, “My wife was always prioritizing Baa over everything. The way she held the family together and taught our sons the value of being with each other is something that helped all of us forge this beautiful bond.” Both the brothers Nick and Mayur when they first came to US were very clear that they are working hard to create a comfortable life for their family in US. They admit that never once did it cross their mind that they would want to stay separately. Nick says, “Everything we have done is for our family name. Today we are so close that both my nieces call me Nimish
Papa just like they call their dad Mayur papa. The kids in the family are carrying forward our sentiments where we never separated from each other.” Hari Bhai adds, “Perhaps it was our luck and the warmth of love in our household that everybody immediately felt at ease with each other. Talking about his two daughter-in-laws he says, “Both my sons got married within our community back in India and my daughter-inlaws are just like my own daughters. They have given us so much love and respect and we are doing our best to do give them our blessings.” Today the Patels are one big family and both Nick and Mayur’s children Meera, Janki, Sonali and Hari are born in America but continue to take pride in their Indian traditions and cultures. The family has never compromised on their core values and is strict vegetarian. Gujarati dishes, which both young and old enjoy, dominate meal times in family and they celebrate all their festivals from Navratri to Ekadashi with great merriment. The family as they are preparing for puja ceremony to mark 13 days since Baa’s demise admit that they will feel the void but are positive that they will carry forward the path paved by her. Hari Bhai says, “Just like Baa’s name – Divali, she will always remain like a light guiding our life.” Nick says, “Baa’s extraordinary life has impressed many Gujarati families who too have tried to go the joint family way just like us. I would say if our example helps any one to bond better with their families we feel humbled.
THE NOW TEN MEMBER STRONG PATEL HOUSEHOLD IN MORTON GROVE, IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW A BIG, JOINT, GUJARATI FAMILY STRUCTURE IS THE SECRET TO HAPPY LIVING.

‘Dileep’s arrest affects Malayam film industry’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the arrest of Malayalam superstar Dileep in connection with the abduction and molestation of a popular actress in February, the work in progress on two of his films has come to an abrupt end, say industry sources. The release of his film Ramleela, which was slated for this month, appears to have been postponed and now become uncertain, sources say. Ramleela is Dileep’s big budget film produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam, whose Mohanlalstarrer Pulimurugan became the first Malayalam film to cross the Rs 100-crore mark. Kammara Sambhavam, whose 80 per cent shooting has been completed, is another film that could now be delayed, say sources.

Dileep has to be produced before the court on July 14 morning, as the police remand will be over. The police are trying to connect all the dots in the case to crack the conspiracy theory. The police probe team was told by Suni about the places where the conspiracy was hatched by Dileep. A few pictures are also with the police about the places where Dileep and Suni had met. Meanwhile, fresh trouble surfaced for the beleaguered actor when the brother of actor Kalabhavan Mani told the media that he suspected Dileep was involved in his brother’s death as the latter had real estate links. Mani passed away in March last year after he was brought to a private hospital from his farm house.

Indian pleads guilty to terrorism charge
BY A STAFF WRITER OLEDO, OH -- An Indian citizen who studied at Ohio State University has pleaded guilty to supporting terrorism and trying to arrange the killing of a federal judge who had been overseeing his case. Yahya Farooq Mohammad is one of four men with Ohio ties accused in 2015 of working to send money to a known al-Qaida leader. The others are awaiting trial. Mohammad pleaded guilty on July 10 to providing support to terrorists and solicitation to commit a violent crime. Prosecutors say Mohammad told another inmate in Toledo last year he wanted to have the federal judge killed. Mohammad’s attorney says the government didn’t have a strong case but the 39-year-old Mohammad decided to plead guilty and accept a 27-year sentence because it was too risky to face trial and a possible life sentence. Mohammad, who studied engineering at Ohio State University from 2002 to 2004, admitted offering $15,000 to an undercover FBI agent to kidnap and kill US District Judge Jack Zouhary, who was overseeing his terrorism case.

The spiritual basis of vegetarianism
BY ASant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj HICAGO,IL -- God created this universe, the earth, and its creatures. It is natural for us to respect all life rather than destroy what God has created. Those who are truly connected with God feel a love for all creatures, great and small. They perceive the Light of God in human beings and in all other life forms. This Light exists as much in the humble ant as in the powerful lion. It shines in the snake as well as the cow. It shimmers in the fish, as well as the birds. When we look at life through the eyes of the soul, we witness God in even the humblest and most grotesque of creatures. With that angle of vision, we develop love for all that exists. There is a powerful and inspiring story from Buddhism that illustrates the basis of the belief that a vegetarian diet is the one that those interested in spirituality should adopt. This story regarding the importance of the vegetarian lifestyle comes from the Jataka Tales of the Buddhist tradition. In ancient times, some groups of people were in the habit of offering dead animals as a ritual called the “Feast to the Dead.” As the story goes, a teacher told his students, “It is time to find a goat to offer for the ‘Feast to the Dead.’ Find a goat and bring him to the river and bathe him. Then, place a garland of flowers around his neck.” The students set out to obey the teacher’s instructions. After finding a he-goat, the students bathed and decorated the animal but the goat started laughing joyously. After a few moments, he began crying. The students were perplexed and asked the goat, “Why did you laugh and then begin to cry?” The goat replied, “Ask me this question in front of your teacher.”
C
The students brought the goat to their teacher and told him what had happened. The teacher asked the goat the same question, “Why did you laugh and then cry?” The goat explained, “In one of my past lives I was a teacher like yourself. I also wanted to offer a ‘Feast to the Dead,’ so I killed a goat. As a result of killing that one goat, I had to be reborn and be killed five hundred times by having my head cut off, just as I had done to the goat. This is my five hundredth and last birth. I laughed out of joy that after this day I shall be freed from that one bad deed I had done.” The teacher then asked the goat to explain, “But what made you cry?” The goat replied, “I cried because I am now worried about you! When I thought about how, after you kill me, you will also have to be killed five hundred times in your future lives, I cried because I felt sorry for you.” The teacher worried about this impending doom, and reassured the goat, “Do not worry. I will not kill you.” The goat explained, “It does not matter. Whether you kill me or not, I am supposed to die today.” The teacher insisted that he would protect the goat, but the goat told him,
“Protection cannot save me. I cannot escape the payment for my deeds.” The teacher then ordered his students to follow the goat wherever the animal went, making sure nothing would harm the dumb denizen. As the day wore on, the goat became hungry. The goat said, “I will eat some leaves from the bush growing beneath that rock.” As he ate, a lightning bolt hit the rock, splitting it so that part of the rock fell on the goat’s neck. The animal was instantly killed. The teacher, hearing of the goat’s death, turned to his students and said, “If people were aware of the payment they would have to make for their deeds, they would never injure any living creature, whether human or animal.” The students and the teacher decided not to kill any living creature anymore. This is a touching story that helps us understand why so many religions are based on the concept of a vegetarian diet as the safest one at a spiritual level. No matter what one’s religious or spiritual belief is, there are some underlying commonalities. Those common beliefs are that there is a creative power or force, whether called God or any other name, and that we are soul, a part of the Creator. The majority of religions also believe that animals too have consciousness or a soul, which makes them also a part of God. Thus, the spiritual basis of vegetarianism is not to take the life of any other creature. One of the principles is to not harm any living creature. One beautiful example of nonviolence for all creatures is reflected in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. He loved all animals. In fact, they would gather around him and not harm him when he would be lost in prayer. There is an anecdote from his life about a time when he was sitting
near a lake. A fisherman who caught a large fish passed by in his boat and offered his catch to St. Francis. The saint joyfully accepted the catch and called the fish, “Brother.” He immediately placed the fish gently back into the water, restoring its life. It is said that the fish, which was grateful to its savior, continued to swim near the place where St. Francis was sitting in prayer. The fish would not leave that area until the saint’s prayers were done and the saint had given the fish permission to leave. St. Francis’s life was a long epic of love. He gave freely to beggars and served his fellow beings day and night. He freed wounded animals and fed them with his own hands. One day, as he was walking, he saw a man carrying two lambs on his shoulders. The animals were hanging upside down. St. Francis asked the man what he was doing with the lambs. When the man replied that he was taking them to the market for sale to the slaughterhouse, St. Francis’s heart was filled with compassion for the animals. He bartered the coat that he was wearing in exchange for the lambs and put the animals in the care of a friend with the instructions to look after the welfare of the animals and not to kill them or harm them in any way. Thus, if we wish to find God, then we need to be loving and caring to all God’s creatures. That is why a vegetarian diet forms a part of a spiritual life. If we wish to follow the path of nonviolence and love for all creation, then we will adhere to a strict vegetarian diet. In doing so, we will not only have compassion on the younger members of God’s creation, and on our fellow human beings, but we will also have compassion on our own selves.

BY A STAFF WRITER VANSTAN, IL -- The Rev. Timothy Rathod, Pastor of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church (UMC) in Evanston (Illinois), retired on June 30. He faithfully and gracefully served as the Lord’s chosen shepherd for the past 20 years at the Emmanuel UMC and his laudable ministry accounts for 45 years of his altruistic Christian service. On June 24, the entire EUMC family comprising members, friends, district leadership, community leaders, retired and active pastors, children, youth, etc gathered at EUMC (Evanston) in a Christian Worship Service to thank God and to honor the Rev. Timothy Rathod for his faithful ministry. The United Methodist Chicago Northwestern District Superintendent the Rev. Dr Zaki L. Zaki described the retiring pastor as a faithful servant. The EUMC choir delivered a soulful rendition of “How Great Thou Art” followed by a Hindi hymn “Stuti Aaradhana Upar Jaati Hai…” The Rev. Scort Christy, who assumed the responsibilities of a pastor at EUMC from July 1, read the scriptures emphasizing transfer of power. The Rev. Dr Snehalata Patel, in her prayer, petitioned for the retiring and incoming
E
pastors and their families, the Church universal and UMC to espouse the transition of spiritual leadership. The Rev. Timothy Rathod in his homily said he and the Rev. Scort Christy have learned from each other, studied and worked together for over 20 years to glorify the same almighty God “whose grace sustains us all.” Reflecting on his life, the Rev. Timothy Rathod described his long, arduous journey from his birth in a small village in India to the US which, he said, was an impossible task without divine sustenance. The president of EUMC Men’s Group, Joy Christy, thanked all present for joining in the special Worship Service and marvelled at all the good work done by the retiring pastor. The Rev. Dr Zaki L. Zaki (District Superintendent of Chicago Northwestern District), Ravi Cornelius, the Chairperson of EUMC Council, Babu Varma, former chairperson of the EUMC Council and Rev. Anil Patel led the worshippers into a closing prayer and pronounced the benediction. After the Worship Service, all attendees joined in informal fellowship and a dinner featuring some mouth-watering, finger-licking dishes cooked by Joyas Christy and her crew in a great farewell to a faithful shepherd, the Rev. Timothy Rathod.

ASHINGTON, DC -- The Senate on July 10 confirmed Indian American Neomi Rao to be administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). Rao, 44, was confirmed on a mostly party line vote of 54-41 to head the office that oversees the federal government’s entire regulatory process. OIRA has the final approval on all proposed and final rules, as well as government data collections. The Indian American lawyer is a former clerk for conservative Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas, and is tasked with leading a White House agency that will play a leading role in implementing President Donald Trump’s agenda for reforming government rules and regulations. Rao is the founder of the Center for the Study of the Administrative State at George Mason University where she serves as an associate professor. The center is affiliated with the Antonin Scalia Law School and has reportedly been a beneficiary of a $10-million donation from the Charles Koch Foundation. Rao garnered support from Democrats as well, receiving the backing of a group of eight former administrators of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, including Republicans and Democrats. Other Democrats, such as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, see Rao as a cog in Trump’s deregulation efforts. Rao, a graduate of Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School, will also be tasked with ensuring the Trump administration follows the law as it unwinds rules and regulations.

Atlanta BAPS Mandir marks anniversary BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the current spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, joined devotees and well-wishers in celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta, GA on July 1. The Mandir was inaugurated by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj in 2007 and has helped enrich the local community through the development of family and youth programs, community outreach, and spiritual assemblies. The anniversary celebrations were primarily created and led by the youth of BAPS who have been preparing for the arrival of Mahant Swami Maharaj for several months. The event was attended by several community and government officials who recalled fond moments with Pramukh Swami Maharaj and shared heartfelt reflections on their first meeting with Mahant Swami Maharaj during his current travels. The mayor of Lilburn, Johnny Crist, presented Mahant Swami Maharaj with a key to the city while saying, “Most cities in the state of Georgia want to be a place where you live, work, and play. But may I offer another alternative, or add to it, and that is

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta is the first of its kind in the region, and community volunteers welcomed the ten-year anniversary celebrations in the presence of Mahant Swami Maharaj with the same zeal and excitement they experienced back in 2007.
Bill on green cards to illegal 9/11 workers BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A Bill that would grant green cards to undocumented immigrants who served in the rescue, recovery and cleanup efforts after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be introduced in the House this week, Democratic Representative Joseph Crowley, of Queens, said on July 10. The legislation is likely to face an uphill battle with a Republican-controlled Congress, and with the Trump administration, which has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration. The Bill currently does not have support from any Republican members of Congress. Under the James Zadroga Act of 2010, which was reauthorized in 2015, compensation and health benefits were extended to victims of Sept. 11 and workers who responded to the attacks, including immigrants who are in the United States illegally. Almost 70 percent of workers who helped in the cleanup showed respiratory symptoms, according to researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said there was a precedent for the legislation, in the treatment of immigrants who served in the armed forces

URLINGTON, VT -- A Pakistani American leader of the Democratic Party in Vermont has been threatened with a series of anti-Muslim emails asking him to “get out” of the state. Faisal Gill, who took over as the chairman of the Vermont Democratic Party in March and is believed to be the first Muslim leader of a state political party in the US, received three threatening emails within a seven-day period in May. Christopher Hayden, 48, of Burlington in Vermont, was arraigned in June on a charge of disturbing the peace by electronic means with a hate-crime enhancement. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of two years and three months. Hayden pleaded not guilty and was released on conditions. The case was first reported on July 7. Gill, 45, received one anti-Muslim email on May 24 from an account in Hayes’ name, and two additional messages May 31. The final two emails used racial and ethnic slurs. The writer told Gill that it was his “last chance” to “get out of my Green Mountains.” “Get out or we will make you wish you did,” in a separate email, the writer told Gill. Gill, who had never met Hayden, said he was deeply disturbed and alerted Burlington police. “I do hope that he gets a sentence that makes him realize that he cannot do these kinds of things anymore,” Gill said in an interview. George, the prosecutor, believes the threats were based entirely on Gill’s religion.
Three Indians charged for sedition in Punjab during World War I. His bill could affect 1,000 to 2,000 unauthorized immigrants who aided in the cleanup efforts after the attacks, Crowley told reporters. Represntative Nydia M. Velázquez, a co-sponsor of the Bill, said: “During the darkness of that day, we saw New Yorkers rally together to care for one another and respond
to the attack. Immigrants, documented and undocumented, were among those that worked on ‘the pile,’ searching for survivors and helping our city recover.” The Bill, the 9/11 Immigrant Worker Freedom Act, will be introduced by Crowley; besides Representative Velázquez, of Brooklyn, its co-sponsors are Representatives Adriano Espaillat and Jerrold Nadler, both of Manhattan.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Three Indian Americans were among the five to be charged of sedition and promoting enmity and criminal conspiracy for a campaign titled ‘Punjab Independence Referendum 2020.’ New York residents Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Jagdeep Singh, a former resident of Fatehgarh Sahib and Jagjeet Singh, a former resident of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Gurpeet Singh, a resident of Mohali and Harpunit Singh, a resident of Nanak Nagar in Jammu and Kashmir, were all involved in the promotion of the campaign. The campaign was managed by the Baba Hanuman Singh Enterprise agency which was hired by New York-based Sikhs for Justice whose legal advisor happens to be Pannun. Indian invents dryer requiring no heat BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY – Viral Patel, an Indian American research and development associate staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is part of a group of researchers who are developing an ultrasonic dryer which dries clothes faster and requires no heat. “It is a completely new approach. Instead of evaporation, it’s technically performing mechanical extraction of the moisture within the fabric,” Patel told Patel said that traditional dryers generally use straight-forward technology: as air gets sucked in from the surrounding area, it travels through a heater or gas burner and into the drum where the clothes tumble around allowing the heat to absorb the moisture with the air leaving the dryer. However, the ultrasonic dryer uses piezoelectric transducers to remove moisture: when high frequency voltage is applied to the transducers, they vibrate at a high frequency causing trapped water to leave the fabric without heat. Basically, the dryer shakes the water out of the clothes, speeding up the process.

Patel mentioned that GE Appliances is in the process of developing an agreement

BY A STAFF WRITER HIADELPHIA, PA -- What could the connection be between James Baldwin and Indian student Archishman Raju, who came to the United States four years ago and had never heard about the famed novelist, playwright and civil rights activist before? Raju, who is pursuing a doctorate in physics from Cornell University, once attended a class taught by Philadelphia-based former Temple University professor Anthony Monteiro. The subject of the weekly Saturday Free School class: Baldwin. Reading the prolific novelist and essayist introduced him to the history of the black struggle in America, something Raju, who travels from Ithaca, N.Y., for the classes, could compare to India’s own anticolonialism. “It’s a critique of the social structure that functions not just in America but in the world,” he said of Baldwin’s writings. So inspired was he with Baldwin’s work, which explored racial and social injustices in ‘50s and ’60s, that he took up a cause. Raju is an organizer of ‘James Baldwin Celebration,’ a three-day festival at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, July 7-9. The celebration, a free and open gathering, which includes music, poetry, panel discussions and screenings of Baldwin’s speeches and debates, is being organized by the Saturday Free School. “Baldwin has taught us that having sustained change in a society requires more than expressing anger and sorrow,” Raju was quoted as saying. “It requires understanding the world and participation in sustained organizing.” Baldwin died in 1987 but his writings continue to find relevance and continue to inspire millions.

Obesity gene lures kids to fast food NEW YORK: Kids’ response to advertisements of burgers, pizzas and french-fries may be the result of a key obesity gene influencing their brain to respond more to food advertisements and other cues to eat, says a study. The study showed children with the fat-mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene had greater activity in brain centers when watching fast food commercials. —IANS
then confirmed through the presence of parasites in the blood. The current study, published recently in the journal eLife, showed that substantial quantities
of trypanosomes that cause the disease can exist within the skin and can be transmitted back to the tsetse fly vector. “Our results have important implications with regard to the eradication of sleeping sickness. Firstly, our findings indicate that current diagnostic methods, which rely on observing parasites in the blood, should be re-evaluated and should include examining the skin for parasites,” said lead researcher Annette MacLeod from University of Glasgow in Britain. “In terms of treatment, it may also be necessary to develop novel therapeutics capable of targeting sources of infection outside the blood circulation,” MacLeod noted.
Processed meat worsens asthma IANS, LONDON
L
ove to gorge on ham, sausages and salami? Beware, a new study suggests that higher intake of cured and processed meats can worsen asthma symptoms. Cured and processed meat is rich in nitrites, which may have a role in airway inflammation — a typical feature of asthma, the study said. The findings showed that individuals who consumed four or more weekly servings of cured and
processed meat were 76 per cent more likely to experience worsening asthma symptoms. This could include difficulty in
breathing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. “This research extends the deleterious effect of cured meat on health, and the effect of diet on asthma in adults, and provides a novel analytic approach regarding the role of BMI in the diet-asthma association,” said Zhen Li from Paul Brousse Hospital located in Paris, France. The results showed that cured and processed meat plays a potential role in lung function and health, the researchers added.
LONDON: Suffering from chronic shortness of breath? Beware, you might be at risk of a potential heart failure or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), as suggested by a study. Shortness of breath, which is medically known as dyspnea, is often defined as an intense tightening in the chest, air hunger or a feeling of suffocation. “Shortness of breath is often a sign of heart or lung disease because these two organs are most closely involved in the respiratory system,” said Nasser Ahmadi, research student at University of Gothenburg in Sweden, in one of the statements. Chronic shortness of breath can also be considered as an equally important warning signal similar to high blood pressure, noted the researchers during the study. However, shortness of breath is an often overlooked symptom because people generally tend to associate it with aging. “The fact that people do not seek medical advice for their breathlessness issues is often due to the fact that people associate symptoms with the natural process of aging,” Ahmadi added. —IANS
Regular use of aspirin bad Using social media increases depression for uterine cancer patients IANS, NEW YORK
NEW YORK: Regular use of over-thecounter non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen is associated with an increased risk of dying in patients diagnosed with a type of uterine cancer. “There is an increasing evidence that chronic inflammation is involved in endometrial cancer and progression and recent data suggests that inhibition of inflammation through NSAID use plays a role,” said co-lead author of the study Theodore Brasky from Ohio State University in the US. “Our finding was surprising because it goes against previous studies that suggest NSAIDs can be used to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of developing or dying from certain cancers, like colorectal
U
cancer,” Brasky said. In the study involving more than 4,000 patients, the researchers found that regular NSAID use was associated with a 66 per cent increased risk of dying from endometrial cancer among women with Type-1 endometrial cancers, a typically less-aggressive form of the disease.
sing a couple of social media platforms may be all right, but being in the network of a broader range of social media outlets may put you at an increased risk of depression and anxiety, warns a new study. The findings suggest that compared with the total time spent on social media, use of multiple platforms is more strongly associated with depression and anxiety among the young adults. The researchers found that people who report using seven to 11 social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than their peers who use zero to two social media platforms. “This association is strong
People using seven to 11 social media platforms had faced more depression
enough that clinicians could consider asking their patients with depression and anxiety about multiple-platform use and counseling them that this use may be related to their symptoms,” said lead
author Brian Primack from University of Pittsburgh Centre for Research on Media, Technology and Health in the US. Researchers took 1,787 US adults using a depression assessment tool.
