Expert for early conclusion of BIT WASHINGTON: Ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States this month, a U.S. expert has suggested early conclusion of a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) as it could be a game changer. “A high-standards BIT has the potential to remove significant barriers to investment on both sides,” according to Richard M. Rossow, Wadhwani Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies at Centre for Strategic and International Studies. According to Rossow, the deterioration in bilateral economic relations over the last few years has largely been driven by four main issues in India. He identified these as “the slow pace of reform, particularly as it relates to foreign direct investment (FDI) caps; concerns about patent protection afforded to pharmaceutical products; the introduction of forced local manufacturing rules in some sectors; and an increase in cross-border taxation cases.” — IANS

nited States Senator John McCain on September 9 said “India’s rise as a global actor can benefit the U.S.”, and asked both countries “to trust each other and try to invest and renew their relations”. “Ultimately, India and the U.S. should have confidence in one another, and in the promise of their strategic partnership,” he said addressing the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank on “Strengthening U.S.-India Rela-

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel have already traveled to India to meet Modi and the two sides had their annual strategic dialogue in July in New Delhi although it was Washington’s turn to host it. Modi, who begins his U.S. visit on September 26 in New York, may also meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly session. Sharif will be in the U.S. from September 22 to 27. Prospects of a Modi-Sharif meeting in New York had dimmed after India canceled the August 25 India-Pakistan Foreign Secretary level talks in Islamabad over Pakistan high commissioner in India Abdul Basit meeting with Kashmiri separatist leaders. However, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on September 8 revived the possibility of a Modi-Sharif meeting saying there are no full stops in diplomacy and the government would respond as the situation emerged. Modi will come to Washington on September 29 after a mega community reception at the Madison Square Garden on September 28 organized by Indian American Community Foundation.
Obama delays plan on immigration reform WASHINGTON: United States President Barack Obama has abandoned a plan to force through immigration reform before the end of the summer, BBC reported on September 6. Tens of thousands of people try to get into the U.S. from Mexico annually. A
rmed forces stepped up rescue efforts in Jammu and Kashmir, evacuating over 47,000 people so far and government agencies tried to restore road and communication links snapped in the state’s worst floods in 50 years that have left nearly 200 dead and crippled infrastructure. Aid for the beleaguered northern state poured in with various state governments announcing aid and relief material — Uttar Pradesh (`200 million), Maharashtra (`100 million), Bihar (`90 million), Odisha (`50 million). Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh, who himself belongs to the state, said the Narendra Modi government is doing everything it can to help Jammu and Kashmir tide over the flood calamity and stressed that this was not the time for blame game over the floods. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the first priority of the government is to save human lives. Various agencies including the three defense services and the National Disaster Response Force made coordinated efforts to rescue people, many of them clinging onto rooftops. With the floods having washed away most roads, people continued to be stranded in several areas of the state. Officials estimate that the toll across the state could be around 200, but it is feared that the toll could be much higher. A defense ministry spokesperson said that armed forces and NDRF have so far rescued 47,227 people across the state.
Amit Shah booked by police for hate speech LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Police on September 10 filed a chargesheet against BJP president Amit Shah in Muzaffarnagar over a speech delivered by him during the Lok Sabha election campaign. The speech was reportedly delivered by the Bharatiya Janata Party chief on April 4. He was then booked by the local police for breaching prohibitory orders under section 144. He was at that time in charge of the BJP poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Now, more sections — 153(a), 295(a) and 505 of the Indian Penal Code have been added in the chargesheet. Under these sections, Shah has been accused of using foul words against a community and of trying to disrupt communal harmony, threatening the state and the people.

Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth Tuesday chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee to review the situation. Flood waters, however, continued to play havoc in Srinagar. Though
the water level in the Jhelum river receded marginally, but the backwaters of the Dal lake inundated more areas in the city. Large parts of Srinagar are still under several feet of water and telecommunication and
Srinagar now resembles an expanded Dal Lake SRINAGAR : When it began raining a week ago in the Kashmir Valley, most people welcomed the showers, hoping it will give us a rich agricultural harvest. The nature’s wrath has now turned into an unmitigated disaster. As the rains turned into a non-stop day-and-night downpour, easing only on the sixth day, we knew we were caught up in Kashmir’s worst flood fury in half a century. The full extent of the devastation will be known only when the Jhelum river subsides and we learn the reality from the remote and now cut-off parts of the Kashmir Valley. Within 48 hours after the clouds opened up, every stream and every river in the valley was swollen, flowing
to the brim. Very soon, the embankments gave away. In the past, the overflowing Jhelum would avoid embracing Srinagar, causing huge losses in the area around Kandzal on the outskirts. This time, fate willed it otherwise. In no time, panic gripped Srinagar as flood waters entered every building in the city, sparing only the Old City that stands on higher ground.
India, Australia ink civil nuclear deal NEW DELHI: India and Australia on September 5 inked the long-awaited civil nuclear agreement that will allow Australia to export uranium to India as well as three other agreements, including on water resources and in sports. Modi termed the inking of the civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Australia as “a historic milestone in our relationship” and reflection of a “new level of mutual trust and confidence” in bilateral ties. He said the agreement that will allow Australia to export uranium to India “will open a new chapter in our bilateral cooperation. It will support India’s efforts to fuel its growth with clean energy and minimize the carbon footprint of its growth”. Modi said he and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott “have decided
electricity lines have snapped. Authorities scrambled to rescue the marooned people and tried to restore the telecommunications network that has been on the blink for the past three days. Officials said that four satellite transmitting towers are being set up in Srinagar and other places by September 9 evening. Some hotel occupants used ropes to come out of the buildings. More than 500 hostel students of the National Institute of Technology in the Hazratbal area were shifted to safer locations after the water from the Dal lake entered the campus. Flood waters have also entered portions of the Hazratbal shrine but the authorities confirmed that the holy relic of the Prophet it houses is safe as only the shrine’s ground floor has been inundated. Home ministry officials meanwhile said that food and water supply was being stepped up to the state and 1,25,000 packets of biscuits, 100,000 liters of potable water, 150 tonnes of ready to eat food apart from food packets were being made available.
Army defies all odds SRINAGAR: With improvement in weather conditions, the Army will intensify its rescue operation in floodravaged Jammu and Kashmir while focusing first on Srinagar city and South Kashmir where a large number of people remain trapped in their houses without any basic amenities. Noting that the troops were facing several challenges in the operation ‘Megh Rahat’, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda said they were trying to reach the people who were in the most precarious conditions as quickly as possible though they have received thousands of messages seeking help. Talking to reporters at Udhampurbased headquarters, Hooda said that situation in Jammu was limping back to normalcy. — IANS

In a rare gesture, Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh and Ghulam Nabi Azad were all praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “prompt action” and “quick response” in dealing with the massive flood crisis in Jammu and Kashmir. “Commend the rescue by DMRF, Army, Police and Security Forces in J&K and also GOI and PM for prompt action and reaching out to people in PoK,” Congress general secretary Digivijaya Singh, a known detractor of Modi, said on Twitter. I am very happy with his response. “He (Modi) was very quick to visit the state and announce a package of `10 billion.” — IANS
he AAP on September 10 said it has requested Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to revise the letter sent to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking permission to invite the BJP to form government in Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading, and sought dissolution of the assembly. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal met Jung on September 10 and submitted a letter to him along with a copy
of a CD of the “sting” operation which shows AAP legislator Dinesh Mohaniya being offered a bribe of `40 million by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader to quit the assembly to improve the BJP’s chances of forming a government in Delhi. “In your September 4 letter to the president, you have recommended invitation to the BJP to form the government. The developments in the past few days have made it clear that the BJP does not want to form the government in accordance with the constitution,” the letter written in Hindi said.

Nation bids emotional adieu to Ganesha Millions came out on roads for colorful, musical revelry, dancing and singing songs in praise of Lord Ganesha, offering prayers as they moved towards immersion sites across the country IANS, MUMBAI/NEW DELHI
P
eople in Mumbai on September 8 started to bid a tearful adieu to Lord Ganesha, their favorite Lord who is considered to end all obstacles of life, at the end of his 10-day sojourn this year. Thousands of Mumbaikars came out on roads for colorful, musical revelry, dancing and singing songs in praise of Lord Ganesha, offering prayers to over 120,000 big and small idols as they slowly wound their way towards various immersion sites in the city. About 500,000 idols were taken out for immersion across Maharashtra, including Pune, coastal Konkan, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nashik, Jalgaon, Solapur and Nagpur, undeterred by rains which continued to lash many parts of the state on September 8. The Western, Central and Konkan Railways will provide special services throughout the night to clear the rush of devotees returning home after the immersion of idols. Bollywood, television and Marathi film industry personalities were seen at various immersion sites as the departing idols of Lord Ganesha were bringing the curtain down in the state’s biggest festival. Loud chants of “Ganpati bappa

The massive force was joined by a 10,500-strong civic squad, 11,000 NSS and NCC cadets, and over 200,000 volunteers from various Ganeshotsav organisations, 404 life-guards from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other agencies to manage the crowd and ensure safety during the immersion. The processions moved towards 27 beaches, 45 lakes and 28 artificial immersion sites especially created for all kinds of idols. The festival, started by freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak 121 years ago, has grown to mammoth scales and become a festival cutting all community barriers, said BrihanMumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvaya Samiti president N. espite light rain in some parts of Kerala, Onam was celebrated across the state on September 7 with a lavish, 26dish traditional vegetarian lunch, flowers and a degree of nostalgia. On the occasion of Thiru Onam on September 7, the most important day in the 10-day- long Onam calendar, people were in a festive mood, while a few recalled age-old customs associated with the event. “We got our lunch from a caterer and over the years these caterers have also turned very professional. Each and every item is neatly packed in containers,” said Sumathy Nair, a home-maker in the capital city. Onam, a harvest festival, is celebrated by Malayalees of all religions, castes and creeds, cutting across the financial standing of the families. Onam. “We are a family of rubber tappers. We have had no work for the past nearly four months. I did odd jobs and also saved for celebrating Onam. It was tough but we have managed,” said Kunjumon. In central districts of Kerala, every festival is dependent on the price of natural rubber and since 2011, the price of rubber has been going down from `210 per kg in 2010 to just `126 per kg today. “I was surprised to see many of the markets and shops in our place with less than half the crowd that’s normally seen during the Onam festival days,” said Mani Kurian, a rubber farmer in Pathanamthitta. “Many shops in the towns and villages of rubber-dependent districts are having huge stock of bananas and vegetables, waiting for customers,” he said. A retired school teacher recalled how they used to dance around a swing during Onam in the past. “My father used to get thick ropes and almost two weeks before the Thiru Onam, he used to put up a swing on a mango tree in our
courtyard,” said K. Pankajashi, a retired teacher in Thiruvalla. “During the three key Onam days, we all used to dress up in the traditional Onam attire and dance around the swing,” her added. A floral carpet in front of most homes was yet another Onam event. But things are different today as flowers have become expensive. And so, plastic flowers from China have taken their place in many Kerala households. “I purchased fresh flowers after my children were making a big fuss,” said Ajith Kumar, a contractor. He said he paid `500 for a kg of fresh flowers. “I could have got plastic ones at half the price, but my family wanted fresh ones,” he said. Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome

Fund manager to appeal South Asians face increasingly hostile climate in US 9-year prison term IANS, WASHINGTON
NEW YORK: Mathew Martoma, an Indian-origin former SAC Capital portfolio manager has been sentenced to nine years in prison and forfeiture of $9.4 million for his insider-trading conviction. Martoma, 40, was sentenced in federal court by Judge Paul Gardephe, who presided over Martoma’s five-week trial in February, after a two-hour hearing Monday in downtown Manhattan, CNBC reported. Although federal sentencing guidelines supported an incarceration of between 15 and 20 years, government officials had proposed a term of more than eight years — a length of time that lawyers for Martoma described as “outrageous”, according to the news channel. “Mathew Martoma and his family are devastated by the outcome,” his lawyer, Richard Strassberg, said in a statement. He will appeal the conviction. Martoma, was convicted in February for collecting confidential information about a high-profile Alzheimer’s drug trial from two doctors and making profits and avoiding $275 million in losses for SAC Capital. Martoma won’t face a monetary fine as part of his sentencing, but he will be required to forfeit the bonus he received during the year in question— a figure that exceeds his current net worth of $7.4 million, according to recent court filings, CNBC said. He was stone-faced on September 8 during the sentencing, while his wife, Rosemary Martoma, wept quietly. — IANS Mathew Martoma

‘Current US Congress is worst’ Eighty-three percent of Americans disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job, says a recent study be CNN/ORC IANS, WASHINGTON
A
lmost two-thirds of Americans feel that the current Congress is “the worst in their lifetime”, and just 14 percent of those surveyed approve of the way lawmakers are doing their jobs, according to a survey released by CNN/ORC. Just two months before the legislative elections in November, Americans are expressing clear anger at the actions of their lawmakers. Eighty-three percent of those surveyed disapproved of the way Congress was doing its job and 65 percent felt the current crop of legislators was “the worst in their lifetime”, according to the survey released on September 9. Respondents, however, gave Congress an abysmal approval rating of 14 percent, that is slightly above the 10 percent approval rating from September 2013, which was the lowest in history. Perhaps that is why both Republicans and Democrats have seen voter enthusiasm for the upcoming mid-term elections plummet. In
‘Now, a strong govt will talk to Obama’ NEW DELHI: Ahead of the muchanticipated summit talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama in Washington, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on September 9 said “this time a strong government will be talking” to the U.S. Answering a question in her first press conference since taking over the ministry in May, Sushma Swaraj said the Modi-Obama talks on September 30 will see a “strong government” interacting with the U.S., “which will make all the difference”.
Xi’s India visit to strengthen ties the November voting, the entire House of Representatives will be selected along with one-third of the Senate. Although in 2010, when the last mid-term elections were held, 53 percent of Republicans said they were intending to go to the polls, now that figure stands at 37 percent, according to the survey results. Meanwhile, Democrats have seen their voter intention numbers
drop from 30 percent to 28 percent over the past four years. Analysts say that the Republicans will keep control of the House, but there is uncertainty surrounding the post-election configuration of the Senate, where the Democrats could lose their majority. The telephone survey, which polled 1,014 citizens between Sep 5 and Sep 7, has an error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India and other South Asian countries will push forward bilateral relations, a senior diplomat said. During his India tour, Xi will meet Mukherjee, hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and meet other Indian leaders. Xi will give a speech in New Delhi on China-India relations and China’s South Asia policy and make extensive contacts with Indian people from all walks of life.
The questioner sought to know as to in what manner would Modi’s interaction be different from that of the previous UPA government when Obama met erstwhile prime minister Manmohan Singh for summit meetings. Swaraj said both sides “would try to realize the full potential of ties between the two countries”. “We will talk about manufacture, infrastructure, defense cooperation, security cooperation,” she added.

35 militants killed in Pak air strike IANS, ISLAMABAD
A
t least 35 militants were killed in an air strike launched by the Pakistan army in the country’s northwest tribal area of North Waziristan on September 10 morning, an army statement said. Inter Services Public Relations, the mouthpiece of Pakistan Army, said in a statement that the militants were killed when their three hideouts were targeted and destroyed by the army jet fighters. The air raid was carried out in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, a restive tribal area at PakistanAfghanistan border, where security forces have been launching a major
armed offensive against Taliban militants since June 15, Xinhua reported. To date, over 900 militants have been killed in the operation that aims at wiping out the militant stronghold in the area. Earlier last month, Gen. Raheel Sharif, the country’s chief of army staff, said the armed forces were determined to flush out the militants with their highly-skilled trained and professional expertise even from remote and hard areas of North Waziristan. Around 25,000 to 30,000 troops are participating in the ongoing operation. Over one million people have fled the offensive in the area and are living in refugee camps in Bannu area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
KATHMANDU: Nepal’s political parties are set to hold an all-party conference later this month to persuade the CPN-Maoist, which boycotted the Constituent Assembly elections last year, to come on board the constitution drafting process, party leaders said on September 9. A task force comprising members from major parties — the Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) and Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist -is making preparations to hold the conference in the third week of September, Xinhua reported. The task force is finalizing the procedures, terms of condition and other technical details of the round table conference which will be chaired by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala. After a long hiatus, major parties that are in the Constituent Assembly have agreed to hold an all-party conference, a major demand of the CPN-M since last year.
Karzai calls for unity government KABUL: Outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai on September 9 urged both the presidential candidates, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, to reach an agreement on the formation of a national unity government and take the country out of the impasse. “I am calling upon both the presidential candidates to reach an agreement sooner than later and form the new government,” Karzai said at a ceremony to mark Haftai Shahid or Martyrs Week in Kabul. “The tenure of my government is over and I want to hand over the power to my successor and administer the presidential inauguration in its earliest and want to have it within one week,”
Xinhua quoted Karzai as saying. The Afghan presidential election was held on April 5 and since none of the eight contenders succeeded in securing more than 50 percent of the votes, the two front-runners Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai went for a runoff June 14.
Attacks reaction to military offensive: Pak minister ISLAMABAD: A recent attack on a Pakistan Navy installation in Karachi was a reaction to the ongoing military operation in North Waziristan tribal region, Defense Minister Khwarazm Asif told Parliament on September 10. The security forces launched the major operation against the Pakistani and foreign militants in North Waziristan in June and have killed over 900 militants so far. The attack on the Karachi Dockyard on September 6 was the fourth big Taliban attack since the launch of the North Waziristan offensive. The militants have carried out dead-
ly revenge attacks on an airbase in southwestern Quetta and the airport in the northwestern city of Peshawar. Making a policy statement on the terrorist attack on the Karachi Dockyard attack, the defense minister said that inside help could not be ruled out in September 6 attack that claimed the life of a navy officer, Xinhua reported. Three miscreants were also killed in retaliation from the navy personnel. “The miscreants could not have breached the defense of the navy installation without inside help,” he said.

elangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on September 6 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital and demanded special category status and tax incentives for his state. KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, sought special status for Telangana even as his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu stepped up his efforts to get similar status for his truncated state. The Andhra Pradesh assembly on September 4 passed a resolution urging the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh as promised by then prime minister Manmohan Singh in parliament
Devotee offers 11,116 coconuts to Lord Ganesh HYDERABAD: With his wish of separate Telangana state fulfilled, a devotee has offered 11,116 coconuts to Lord Ganesh, completing the task on September 8.
Chandrasekhar, an activist who participated in the movement for Telangana state, broke the coconuts at the huge Ganesh idol at Khairatabad here. He said he had vowed to offer the coconuts and since the separate state has become a reality, he made the offering. On his request, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao broke the first coconut when the idol was installed 11 days ago. Since then, the devotee has been offering coconuts. On the last day on September 8, he broke the remaining 600 coconuts. The idol at Kharitabad is 60-feet high, the tallest in the city. Every year, the organizers install an idol taller than previous one. This year, a 5,000 kg ‘laddu’ was placed in the hands of the deity, installed as the “Kailasa Ganapati”. Meanwhile, millions of devotees on September 8 bid adieu to elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh amid massive security here and other parts of Telangana. Over 40,000 policemen and paramilitary personnel were deployed in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and the adjacent Cyberabad police commissionerate limits to maintain peace during the annual Ganesh immersion procession, which marks the culmination of the 11-day festivities. Hundreds of idols were immersed in the Hussain Sagar lake in the city.

During the meeting with Modi, he also demanded development of the Hyderabad-Warangal industrial corridor and the 4,000 MW plant by the NTPC Ltd. A delegation led by the chief minister discussed with Modi 21 issues related to the state, ranging from special category status to electricity. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader in Lok Sabha Jitender Reddy told reporters after the meeting that they sought setting up a separate high court for Andhra Pradesh as the existing high court in Hyderabad is catering to both the states. He told the state legislative assembly Thursday that the government has decided to “locate the capital city in a central place of the state around Vijayawada”. nternet services company Google, global e-commerce major Amazon, global banking giant HSBC and others have decided to go ahead their expansion plans, which were stuck due to political uncertainty and issues relating to land allotment in Hyderabad. With the formation of Telangana state ending the political
uncertainty and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government keen to create investment-friendly atmosphere, the big firms have started working out their plans. Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao on September 9 said the problems relating to allotment of land for Google would be sorted out soon. Google plans to set up its own campus, which will be its first out-
side the US. The state government in 2007 had allotted it 20 acres land at Kokapet but this ran into legal trouble. “The matter will be sorted out soon,” the minister told reporters. Last year, the then Congress government of united Andhra Pradesh had agreed to provide alternate land at Raidurg. It was immediately not clear if Google
campus will come up at the original site or the one proposed last year.

HICAGO: Chicago was certainly blessed by the grand ‘Devon Ka Raja-Ganpati Utsav hosted for the first time on Ganesh Chaturthi at Regal Stars, Devon Ave, Chicago by Nirmal Sevakramani of Regal, Hemant Brahmbhatt of Hi India Weekly and Kamal Chhabaria of Uru Swati. They were joined by many Devon area businessmen, friends and well-wishers in bringing in a huge, eye-catching idol of the Elephant God which was installed amid traditional chanting of Sanskrit mantras to invoke the presence of Lord Ganesh by performing a religious ritual called ‘Prana Pratistha’. Hundreds of faithful followers witnessed the entirely spiritual ceremony event, with chants of Ganapati Bappa Moriya’ reverberating in Devon Avenue heralding the beginning of the 10-day long festival which was celebrated with much grandeur and in lively spirits. It was on August 29, the day according to Hindu mythology was Ganesh Chaturthi this year, Lord Ganesh was re-born in his present form–elephant head and human body–with the blessings of his father Lord Shiva. A large number of devotees and Devon area businessmen kept flocking to the facility in Devon day after day for a glimse (darshan) of Lord Ganesh, the Destroyer of Obstacles, and for praying and seeking the blessings of the Fulfiller of Wishes till the festival ended on September 7. PRAYERS AND PRASAD Thronging the venue were Indian woshippers not just from Chicago and its
suburbs but also from neighboring States of Indiana and Wisconsin. Everyday, there were two prayers (Aartis) in the morning and evening, ‘prasad’ was served during the whole day and the last day saw a special Visarjan ceremony--immersing the idol in water after the Aarti. The procession for final imersion was joined by countless devotees with music, dance, chanting and celebrating the event with gusto and merriment. Indeed, on the last day, a record crowd was present with children and youngsters performing classical dances throughout the day, followed by bhajan, kirtan and special pooja. During the entire celebrations, all poojas were performed by Nagendra Rao who was assisted by Dilip Pandya and Pandit Raj. Organizers thanked Vipul Patel of Shukan Mandaps & Designs for providing wondeful decoration, Chirag Patel for spellbinding graphic designs and also Sanjay Patel of Arlington Rental. They also expressed gratitude to Hansa Chhabaria, Kajal, Rahul Singh, Jayesh, Ramesh and family from Resham Sari and all volunteers for their masive efforts to make the Devon Ka Raja-Ganesh Utsav a successful and memorable. Indian doc faces 6-year jail term for medical fraud BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO (IL) -- An IndianAmerican physician whose medical license was suspended after he was arrested earlier this year has pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud and illegally prescribing controlled substances. Sathish Babu, 47, a resident of suburban Bollingbrook, faces steep punishment, including losing his luxury cars, and fines way above his ill-gotten gains. But the plea agreement may help cut his prison sentence in half, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Babu, who owned Anik Life Sciences Medical Corp., a home-visiting physician’s company, admitted that he illegally prescribed oxycodone and other controlled substances, and fraudulently billed Medicare some half a million dollars. But he pocketed less than half of that, or
around $216,000, for services he did not provide. He faces maximum fines of $250,000 on each of his counts of healthcare fraud and handing out illegal prescriptions. Under his plea agreement, Babu also agreed to forfeit approximately $126,000 that was seized when he was arrested, as well as three automobiles―a 2013 BMW, a 2001 BMW, and a 2010 Lexus. He was arrested in February after an investigation and following a sting operation where an undercover agent posed as a patient and received several prescriptions for oxycodone, hydrocodone, and alprazolam from Babu between November 2012 and December 2013. He also permitted unlicensed employees to hand out such controlled substances to the undercover agent, who according to court documents, posed as a healthy individual covered by Medicare and seeking Babu’s help to get prescription medication,
claiming to be suffering shoulder pain from a previous injury. The home care employees, none of whom were licensed professionals, visited the undercover agent’s purported home around 10 times. Babu also treated other patients and submitted claims to Medicare without regard for whether those services were needed. As part of his plea agreement, Babu agreed to surrender his DEA registration. While he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on one count of healthcare fraud and four years in prison on one count of illegally prescribing a controlled substance, the government anticipates the ultimate sentence will be around 57 months to 71 months (5 to 6 years approximately). Babu remains free on bond but cannot write any prescriptions or submit any claims to Medicare. He is to be sentenced January 21.

The finer components of the food forms the body and finest or the subtlest component of the food forms the mind. “You are what you eat. Kids were told that the great expanses of time through which
the course of spiritual evolution runs is called Kalpa and one kalpa is divided into four yugas. Teachers explained the meaning of Sanskara.” Every afternoon, campers made good craft and Origami. HICAGO (IL) -- At the first blush, Shanta Bodiwala, who died in Chicago on August 14, may look like just another woman in the crowd. But the mother of 3 sons, 2 daughters and grandmother and great-grandmother of 5 children was no grey-haired granny to be sneezed at. Married in India at tender age of 9 years and not well-educated as was the norm for a woman in those good old days, Chavda was a true matriarch. Despite countless stumbling blocks that came her way during her journey of life, she raised and took good care of her massive family with her sheer resolve, intelligence and common sense. As years passed by, she inculcate among her chidren and grandkids the true Hindu traditional values needed to be thriving and respectful in society. What’s more, the humble woman led an inspiring life with pride, dignity, honesty and enviable moral values. Mr Suresh Bodiwala told : “One can value the care and nurturing of any tree not just by good looks of the tree but most importantly by the fruits it bears. Her life was an inspiration. She accomplished the role of a true matriarch. Her loss is unbearable and irraparable”.

t’s that life-defining moment when a character on screen transforms totally into a real life personality. We’ve seen Seema Biswas, Ben Kingsley and Farhan Akhtar metamorphose into real life characters in front of our bewildered eyes. Now it is Priyanka Chopra. She virtually transforms her physicality before entering the spirit and the soul of boxing champ Mary Kom (MC). And what a grand entry! Film: “Mary Kom”; Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Darshan Kumar, Zachary Coffin, Robin Das, Shakti Singh; Director: Omung Kumar; Rating: ***** plucky poor girl from rural Manipur goes right to the Olympics. It’s an incredible story filled with sound and fury signifying something deep and seductive, just waiting to be told. Hats off to debutant director Omung Kumar for bringing us one of the most inspiring biopics to have ever reached the silver screen. “Mujhe bronze pasand nahin aata,” barks MC’s coach. As we see Mary’s dreams come true in front
of our eyes, we know she was born to win. The narrative has a soaring quality and texture. It simply takes off with scarcely any room for breathing space. The breathless quality of storytelling goes well with the protagonist’s stormy mercurial nature. Very early in the tightly clenched narrative, we see MC get into a fullfledged scuffle with a school bully. Later she takes on another far more dangerous bully who threatens to
destroy her boxing career. Admirably the narrative doesn’t over-sentimentalize MC’s struggle. Predictably enough a lot of the opposition to MC’s dreams is shown to come from within her home. Sonam Kapoor’s ‘oh my god!’ moment with Salman Khan in Barjatya film MUMBAI : When Sonam Kapoor was offered a chance to romance Salman Khan in the forthcoming film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, she exclaimed “Oh my god”. She says it was also a bit weird to work with director Sooraj Barjatya and Salman, whose romantic sagas she was hooked on to while growing up. “Working with Soorajji and Salman is like the weirdest thing because I have grown up watching Prem (Salman’s character) and it’s like, ‘Oh my god! Prem is romancing me.’,” Sonam told IANS. “I have grown up with his films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!’ and Maine Pyar Kiya, and it’s just like an ‘Oh my god moment!’. So I had to pinch myself at times,” she added. However, this is not her first film with the 48-year-old superstar. The 29-year-old romanced him in her debut film Saawariya. Talking about working with Salman yet again, she said: “We have finished our first schedule. It’s been seven years since I worked with him...I have known him all my life, but he is amazing. He is a professional; he has got the highest amount of IQ.” “I have never seen him being nasty to anyone or rude to anybody. He has immense respect for women and he is extremely hardworking. Mallika in trouble, booked for insulting Tricolor HYDERABAD: Hyderabad police on September 4 booked Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat for disrespecting the national flag. On the direction of a city court, a case against the actress was booked at Falaknuma police station in old city of Hyderabad. A police officer said a case under Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971 was registered. Two citizens had filed a petition in the court, seeking direction to the police to book the actress for insulting the national flag in her upcoming film Dirty Politics. Mallika had wrapped a tricolor on her body on the movie poster. She was seen sitting on the roof of a car with red beacon. This was the second case booked against her in Telangana state. Last month, police in Karimnagar town had registered a case against the actress under different sections of various acts pertaining to the state emblem and national flag. Police took the action on the direction of a local court. Last week, on a public interest litigation, Hyderabad High Court had issued notices to Mallika Sherawat and the central government. The petitioner alleged that Mallika’s act amounts to “obscene use of the Indian tricolor”. He further stated that the state emblem of India has been used for cheap publicity and that the poster insults India’s honor.

ndia’s Sania Mirza and Brazilian Bruno Soares beat American-Mexican pair Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez in the final to win the U.S. Open mixed doubles title here on September 5. Sania, who had faced defeat only a day earlier losing the women’s doubles semifinals, bounced back brilliantly to win her third Grand Slam title. The top seeds won 6-1, 2-6, 119 in super tie-break in a see-saw match lasting an hour at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. After winning the first set decisively, Sania and Soares stumbled dramatically in the second, taking the match into a super tie-break. NEW YORK: Fourteenth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia beat 10th seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3 and 6-3 to win the 2014 US Open title here. It was the first Grand Slam title for the 25-year-old Croat. Right after the match, Cilic went into his box and gave a hug to everybody on his team, especially his coach Goran Ivanisevic. Cilic, 16th in ATP World Rankings, became the first Croat to win a Grand Slam since Ivanisevic won at the 2001 Wimbledon. Cilic didn’t drop any set since the

In the women singles, World No.1 Serena Williams of the U.S. beat 10th-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki to win her third straight and sixth overall U.S. Open title. The 6-3, 6-3 win at Flushing Meadows here on September 7 was the 18th Grand Slam victory for Williams. She is
Ravi Shastri calls coach Fletcher a ‘fatherly figure’ IANS, NEW DELHI
F
The topsy-turvy nature of the match continued as the top seeds let go of a 9-4 lead to let their opponents tie the scores at 9-9. In the end, however, the IndianBrazilian pair, who have been so impressive in the entire tournament, held on to win two consecutive points to take home the title. The 27-year-old Indian had earlier won the Australian Open (2009) and the French Open (2012) mixed titles. Her best performance in the women’s doubles was when she reached the final of the French Open. They beat Yung-Jan Chan and Ross Hutchins in the semi-final to reach the final. In the semis they won 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.
babwe, where he was my counterpart. So I was aware of his leadership qualities already. Also what made Fletcher’s job easier was having the trio of Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar as his assistant coaches,” Shastri said. Shastri was appointed the team director after the Indian team’s humiliating 1-3 loss in the Test series in England triggering rumors that Fletcher could be on his way out. Shastri’s presence did a world of good as the team bounced back in style to beat England by a similar margin in the ODIs.
ormer India cricket captain and now team director Ravi Shastri has backed beleaguered coach Duncan Fletcher saying the Zimbabwean was like a ‘fatherly figure’ who is a ‘solid character’ and ‘hugely respected’. Shastri’s comments on September 9 came at a time when he is expected to submit a report on Fletcher’s performance that would be taken up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at its working committee meeting slated for September 26. “He (Fletcher) is tremendous. He would have done over a 100 Tests as coach, which is massive. He is technically very sound. He is a solid character. He is respected. He is a fatherly figure. I knew Fletcher from the 1983 World Cup. Then in Ravi Shastri 1984 I led an India Under-25 side to Zim-

Williams tried hard to stop her tears.
India’s chances are good: Somdev BANGALORE: Looking fit, though a bit tired, Somdev Devvarman on September 8 said the absence of World No.1 Novak Djokovic from the Serbian team will definitely improve India’s chances of winning the Davis Cup World Group play-off here this weekend. Having arrived on June 8 from Shanghai where he lost the final of an ATP challenger tournament to lowerranked Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, Devvarman wasted no time getting down to practice and said he has been playing better in the recent weeks. “I have not been having the best of seasons with injuries and stuff. But I have been playing well off late. I had a good week in Shanghai, spent a lot of time on court, came through some tough situations,” said the 29year old. Devvarman will be spear-heading India’s Davis Cup challenge against Serbia. Somdev Devvarman

Lewis Hamilton wins Italian Grand Prix MONZA: Lewis Hamilton fought back from a poor start to claim an emphatic victory at the Monza Formula One on September 7, moving to within 22 points of Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg. Rosberg had led early on, but the German had to settle for second when, coming under increasing pres-
sure from Hamilton, he ceded the lead by out-braking himself heading into the first chicane. Felipe Massa claimed his first podium for Williams in third, while teammate Valtteri Bottas fought back from his own tardy start — he dropped from third to 11th in the opening laps — to secure fourth. — IANS

Piaa to work with Priyadarshan again CHENNAI: Actor Piaa Bajpai, who has reunited with her mentor-filmmaker Priyadarshan for upcoming Malayalam film Aamayum Muyalum, says she feels like she’s come home to a family she’s been away from for sometime. Piaa made her acting debut in Priyadarshan-produced 2008 Tamil comedy Poi Solla Poram. “Working with Priyan sir is like coming back home. He saw my potential and launched me when I was invisible to everybody else. He didn’t care about who I was or where I came from, when he introduced me in Poi Solla Poram. He liked my audition and cast me,” Piaa told IANS. She always wished to be directed by Priyadarshan, and when it finally happened she felt as though one her dreams came true. “While working on my first film, I had told Priyan sir that I would like to work with him. Both of us got busy with our respective careers, but we stayed in touch. Recently, he called me and said that he’s working on something and asked me to keep my fingers crossed,” she said. “When I received that call, I had a premonition because soon after the auditions of Poi Solla Poram, he had messaged me something very similar, and I got the film,” she added. — IANS
fter featuring in Telugu film Heart Attack, actress Adah Sharma’s next movie in the language will be an actioner titled Garam. The movie, which also features Aadi Pudipeddi in the lead, was officially launched on september 5. “The regular shooting will start from September 15. It’s a film laced with all the commercial ingredients. Adah and Aadi will make a great pair. We’ve also planned a makeover for Aadi,” the film’s director Madan, told IANS. “Three songs will be shot in some exotic locations abroad, mostly in Europe. We plan to finish the film in two months and release it in December,” he said. The rest of the cast will be finalized soon. Meanwhile, Adah is busy shooting for a Kannada film.
Dasari Narayana Rao
in Tamil gangster film Adhi Bhagavan, hasn’t come across anything “concrete” to star in yet. “I was offered several films after Aadhi Bhagavan, but I wanted to do something exactly opposite to my role in it or something close to my role in the film. I didn’t want to do anything in between because nothing exciting was coming up,” she said. While Neetu is expected to sign two new projects in Tamil, she’s keeping herself extremely busy with her play Umrao Jaan. “Theatre is keeping me busy. I have four shows in October. I’m planning to take my play to Chennai,” Neetu said. She said that every time she goes on stage to play Umrao, she “explores” herself. “I explore myself with theatre whenever I get on stage. I might be playing the same role again, but I’m playing it with a different set of thoughts. I have learnt and earned something new every single time I’ve gone on stage,” she said.

Dasari supports RGV’s auctioning idea CHENNAI: Telugu cinema’s renowned filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao, who has backed the auctioning idea of Ram Gopal Varma, feels it will revolutionize the state of film distribution in the
Tamil films. When this song was offered to me and I was told it was a ‘kuthu’ number, I instantly agreed to do it,” Neetu told IANS. “It’s a song with hundreds of dancers. It has a very grand setup. I really loved the music and the way the song has been choreographed. I didn’t mind doing it because there’s no rule that an actress can’t do a song. Big stars are doing it, why not me,” she said. industry. Varma’s forthcoming Telugu thriller Anukshanam was sold to distributors through film auctioning. “I was initially hesitant about the idea of film auctioning, but now, having seen the phenomenal response, I feel it will revolutionize film distribution in our industry. That’s why I have decided to support it and I urge producers to embrace it,” Dasari told IANS. However, Dasari feels film auctioning will only work for films with “good content”. “With film auctioning, even a bunch of college students can buy a film. The buyers are not regular film distributors. Therefore, a film with good content has higher chances of being sold through this model,” he said.
aving donned different roles as an actor, writer and director in his over two-decade-old journey in southern cinema, multi-faceted veteran Ramesh Aravind feels that there’s nothing more “rewarding” than an actor’s job, but that direction is a “satisfying” creative process. “I find acting more rewarding. It might not be in terms of monetary benefits, but generally the success you enjoy as an actor is bigger than anything else. I don’t think anything can replace the success you derive out of being an actor,” Ramesh told IANS in an interview. Ramesh is “Direction is a currently busy creative process. Facebook addiction can leave you lonely According to a new study, too much use of social network sites has adverse consequences IANS,LONDON

o you often feel you have wasted time on Facebook or termed it as a meaningless activity but still cannot let your eyes move away from the screen? You are at the risk of developing depression. According to new research, while the social networking site is there to help you stay in touch with your near and dear ones, there are consequences to its consistent use, including a “lowered life satisfaction of basic psy-

f you are working long hours at the desk, do make it a point to take a five minute walk every hour to reverse negative effects of prolonged sitting, says an Indianorigin researcher. “We found that easy five minute walks can reverse harm caused to leg arteries during hours of prolonged sitting,” claimed Saurabh Thosar, a post-doctoral researcher from the Oregon Health and Science University. When people sit, slack muscles do not contract to effectively pump blood to the heart. Blood can pool in the legs and affect the endothelial function of
Indian wines sparkle at Ljubljana wine expo LJUBLJANA: Pleasing the palate of wine connoisseurs of central Europe, Indian wines made an impressive debut at Vino Ljubljana 2014 International Wine Fair in Slovenia with the entire stock sold out even before the event concluded, said their Italian importer. “My stock of Indian wines was completely exhausted well before the closing time of the Expo on September 7 and the stall had to be shut down by early evening,” said Paolo Perilo, of Milan-based Twiner SRL, which had offered selected award-winner labels from Fratelli Wines and Sula Vineyards, representing the best of Indian terroirs uniqueness. To provide visitors a full Indian experience, wines were offered along with selected Indian dishes at Vino Ljubljana, the 50th edition of the International Wine Fair held in the Slovenian capital on September 4-6, gathering producers from the country and abroad and many thousands of visitors, trade operators and consumers. Perilo said he had several hundred visitors who tasted, appreciated and purchased the Indian wines, indicating the latent potential of this still untapped Centeral
European and Balkan market even against stiff competition from the excellent, local, pan-European and even global wines. Speaking after the event, the Italian import businessman said he would explore possibilities of expanding sales throughout the region through hotel and supermarket chains and seek to set up country distributors. A stockist for Slovenia who can deliver Indian wines throughout the country has already been appointed, he said. Perilo said he would also explore the possibility of local bottling of bulk imports to reduce unit retail costs and make the wines competitive in the European Union market. In June, the wines from India were creditably rated and placed at the international competition section of Vino Ljubljana as well. — IANS

I arteries or the ability of blood vessels to expand from increased blood flow. “We have shown that prolonged sitting impairs endothelial function, which is an early marker of cardiovascular disease and that breaking sitting time prevents the decline in that function,” added Thosar.
f your job leads to spending most of the time outdoors, do not forget to wear sunglasses as it can save you from developing a common eye disease. According to a study, residential geography, time spent in the sun and whether or not sunglasses are worn may help explain why some people develop exfoliation syndrome (XFS), an eye condition that is a leading cause of secondary open-angle glaucoma
and can lead to an increased risk of cataract. “Lifetime outdoor activities may contribute to XFS so a more widespread use of UV-blocking eyewear can help prevent XFS,” said lead study author Louis Pasquale, as associate professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in the United States. Researchers conducted a clinic-based, case-control study in the U.S. and Israel, involving XFS cases and control individuals.
