United States federal judge has declared the death penalty in the state of California as unconstitutional. “The dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system has resulted, and will continue to result, in an inordinate and unpredictable period of delay preceding their actual execution,” U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said, according to EFE. According to the Carney, delays have created a “system in which arbitrary factors, rather than legitimate ones like the nature of the crime or the date of the death sentence, determine whether an individual will actually be executed.” Of the more than 900 people sentenced to death in California since 1978, only 13 have been executed, Carney said. With this ruling, the judge overturned the death penalty against Ernest Dewayne Jones, who was convicted April 7, 1995, of the 1992 rape

he latest reported observations of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) supremo, Ashok Singhal, echo what the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue, M.S. Golwalkar, said in his 1939 publication, We, or Our Nationhood Defined. In it, the Hindutva icon had given an outline of what the minorities can expect in India. “The foreign races in Hindusthan,” the RSS guru had written, “must either adopt the Hindu culture and language, must learn to respect and hold in reverence Hindu religion, must entertain no ideas but those of glorification of the Hindu race and culture ... or may stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment, not even citizen’s rights.” Seventy-five years later, Singhal’s statement shows that little has changed so far as the saffron worldview is concerned. In an interview to the Hindustan Times, he has said that the “Muslims will be treated as common citizens — nothing more, nothing less. And they must learn to respect Hindu

If they keep opposing Hindus, how long can they survive?” Unlike Golwalkar, the VHP leader is willing to concede citizen’s rights to Muslims, but the precondition of respecting Hindu sentiments remains. He has also issued an unambiguous threat by linking the “survival” of the Muslims to the need to defer to the Hindus. Singhal has imposed a caveat as well. It is that the Muslims must forsake their claims on the Ayodhya, Varanasi and Mathura mosques and accept a uniform civil code. By reviving the demand for the Varanasi and Mathura shrines along with that of Ayodhya, Singhal has recalled the slogan which was raised by the saffron cadres after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya: “Yeh to pehli jhanki hai, Kashi, Mathura baki hai.” (This is only the first instalment; Kashi and Mathura will be next). Following a carrot-and-stick policy, the VHP leader has promised to give the Muslims “love” — another change from Golwalkar — and pledged not to claim any other mosque (for demolition) even though there are thousands built on the “ruins of temples” which were destroyed in medieval times.

In the interview, Singhal has given the saffron brotherhood’s interpretation of Narendra Modi’s success. It was based, according to him, essentially on the “undercurrents” of the Ram temple and Godhra issues over which development and governance acted as a veneer. The next step is to do “what we want to do” though by “constitutional means”. If these observations are read together with Singhal’s earlier hope that only Modi can prevent the “total Islamization” of India, then it will be obvious that while the people in general are expecting an economic revival, the saffron lobby wants the implementation of its Hindu agenda. Evidently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have to undertake a careful balancing act in order to reconcile the two — if it wants to. Perhaps, it will start with a few sops to the fundamentalists by, say, initiating moves to introduce the uniform civil code and hold a wide-ranging discussion on Article 370 of the constitution which confers special status on Kashmir. Only the BJP knows whether they are paper tigers or have real teeth. Outsiders have little clue although their capability to set off riots is not unknown.

Shah will be sentenced in October and could face up to 20 years in prison for each count and a $250,000 fine. Shah was the president and CEO of SOHM and Costas, both based out of California. SOuTH ASiA Top al-Qaeda leader killed in Pak ISLAMABAD: At least 13 militants were killed on July 23 during air strikes carried out in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region. According to military officials, six militant hideouts were destroyed in the airstrikes in the Shawal mountains and the area near Dattakhel, Dawn online reported. So far, more than 400 militants, mostly foreigners, have been killed during the Zarb-i-Azb military operation. The operation was launched by the army June 15 following a brazen Taliban terror attack on Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport June 8. About 900,000 people from North Waziristan tribal region have been displaced so far in the operation, according to figures released by the FATA Disaster Management Authority. Earlier, the Al Qaeda has said that six of its leaders were killed in US drone attacks in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region, the media reported

US wants ties with Modi: Pak daily ISLAMABAD: After denying him a visa for years, the US now wants to engage with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Pakistani daily said on July 20, adding Washington wants to re-engage with “Modi’s India”. An editorial in the Dawn said the US-India Strategic Dialogue will resume when Secretary of State John Kerry visits New Delhi later this month. His trip will be followed by a series of cabinet- and sub-cabinet-level visits leading up to the summit between Modi and Barack Obama in September. “A hearing by a subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held this week highlights the fast-changing mood in the US that wants to re-engage with Modi’s India, as well as the renewed thrust for India to play a larger regional role,” it said. Maldives deports 6,400 migrant workers MALE: Maldivian immigration officials deported 6,400 migrant workers in 2014 and are holding another 159 in detention, an official said on July 23. Besides a handful arrested over criminal offenses, the others were all undocumented migrant workers, some having worked illegally for over 10 years, Xinhua reported. A Maldives immigration official said that legal action would also be taken against the employers of migrant workers. The official said that immigration staff are aware of the risk of deport-

ing victims, and said that no legal rights were being infringed during the detention of migrant workers. The current special operation to deport undocumented workers was announced on April 24 by Minister of Defense and National Security Mohamed Nazim. In December 2013 the department had conducted a voluntary repatriation program to allow for the regularization of workers through easier documentation processes and the option to return legally after six months.

Bagmati is considered a holy river by both the Hindus and Buddhists, with a number of Hindu temples located on its banks. The decision was made on July 20 as part of the government’s plan to end the Himalayan nation’s power crisis within three years, Xinhua reported. Nepal’s energy ministry has already announced that all of its available resources would be utilised to maximize the energy generation. Experiments important for actors: Emraan Hashmi MUMBAI: Actor Emraan Hashmi’s last two experimental films Ek Thi Daayan and Ghanchakkar didn’t go down well with his fans. However, he does not regret doing them. He feels as an actor it is necessary to move away from one’s comfort level. “For any actor, doing experiments is important. I don’t regret the films I have done. And debutant director Akshay Akkineni delivers. When you gotta go, you gotta go...right? When the devil within summons the poor pizza boy for a bit of footsie in an abandoned bungalow, you know it’s time to get seriously concerned about the health of your spirit. First-time director Akshay Akkineni (his celebrated editor-dad Sreekar Prasad adroitly edits the footage) gives us a horror film that’s also funny and flighty. There’s a comic crust to the cheesy base. That’s a rarity indeed. If you’ve seen the Tamil original, then you know what you’re in for. Pizza is a pacy perky ode to new-

age terror where traditional horror elements such as a woman possessed by an evil force is combined with the theme of the effect of metropolitan quirks such as mindless materialism and commitment phobia, on the mind of the upwardly mobile class. The film has some genuinely scary moments once the pizza boy

(Akshay Oberoi, sincere) gets locked inside the house with ghouls on the prowl. There are insane twists in the terror tale that add up finally to a fairly convincing too-clever-for-its-own-good theme. Though nothing spectacularly shocking happens during the film’s running time, there are enough turns and twists in the tale to keep us alert and involved from behind our 3D glasses. That brings me to the singular unimportance of being threedimensional in our movies. I’m never able to figure out why our films make a spectacle of themselves. Dude, 3D is distracting. However, the chill quotient in Pizza works better with objects flying into your face and bloody hands lunging from nowhere to grab our pizza boy by the throat. But it’s not only such shock shots that make Pizza engaging. It’s that crisp spicy topping of humor where we see our hero being trapped into a house of horrors that his pregnant wife would probably have written about in one of her stories. Yup, Pizza delivers.

ORT WORTH (TX) -- Long before the Johnson Family Mortuary in Fort Worth, Texas, made national headlines when the evicting landlord found eight decomposing bodies, the owners of the mortuary business had a checkered past in the industry. The Texas Funeral Service Commission had shut down a prior funeral home operated by twin brothers Dondre and Derrick Johnson in 2010 when the brothers owed more than $13,600 in penalties assessed for violations. In addition, five complaints are pending with the commission against the Johnson Family Mortuary. The brothers’ operating license for the mortuary expires at the end of month. “Unless or until they resolve these pending issues, we will not grant a license to anyone in the Johnson family, anyone representing the Johnson family or anyone connected to the Johnson family,” says Kyle Smith, a staff attorney for the commission. Derrick Johnson said the suit and penalties against D&D Johnson Funeral Home have nothing to do with the Johnson Family Mortuary. “We learn from our mistakes,” said

URORA (MO) — The police in the southwest Missouri are investigating the theft of more than $100,000 in equipment from the Aurora airport. Airport operator Justin Richmond says the thieves made off with equipment such as GPS systems, radios, and transponders from 13 planes. More than 20 planes were broken into on July 16. Richmond says the thieves appeared to be knowledgeable about aircraft because they left behind less-valuable electronics. An aircraft security expert says the thieves might travel the country targeting airports. Tom Zecha, aviator security manager for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, says the theft was well-planned and an unusually large number of items were taken. Richmond says the city is now considering adding security cameras and a front gate at the airport.

Merv Mitchell, 37, was arrested on the night of July 17 when the police executed a search warrant at Masjid Ar-Razaqq Ul-Karim in the 1100 block of North 63d Street, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. The attack happened after a prayer service three days ago with Mitchell, also known as Mabul Shoatz, accusing the 46-year-old mosque member of the theft. The accused immediately denied it, but to no avail. Mitchell and the mosque’s imam carried the accused down a flight of stairs to the backyard of the mosque, a converted house, where Mitchell also lives, Walker said. They put the victim’s wrist on a log, and Mitchell “swung at his wrist, cut through his skin, and cut his tendons, but didn’t make it all the way” because the blade was dull, Walker said. The victim was treated at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital and will require reconstructive surgery. Mitchell was charged with a g g r a va t e d a s s a u l t , c r i m i n a l conspiracy, and related offenses. The police found the 2-foot-long machete during the search. Walker said the police would obtain an arrest warrant for the 35-year-old imam.

UFFALO (NY) -- An abstract by University of Buffalo faculty member Nitesh Kuhadiya on his research on Type 1 diabetes and liraglutide has won the Helmsley Charitable Trust Abstract Award. The Indian American assistant professor in the Department of Medicine was recognized for his abstract, “Liraglutide as Additional Treatment to Insulin in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Clinical Trial.” The award was given to Kuhadiya in conjunction with ICE/ENDO 2014, the annual meeting of the International Congress of Endocrinology and the

Endocrine Society, which took place during June 21-24 in Chicago. Kuhadiya’s research, presented at ICE/ENDO on June 22, was the first randomized, double-blinded, placebocontrolled clinical trial. It showed that adding liraglutide to insulin in Type 1 diabetics resulted in significant improvements in glucose control, including reductions in the hemoglobin A1C (the average blood sugar measurement over 90 days), total insulin dose, blood pressure, body weight, carbohydrate intake and C-reactive protein. Results of the study, which involved 54 patients taking liraglutide and 18 taking placebo, are being submitted to a journal

INFOSYS CO-FOUNDER GIVES $1.8M TO CMU FOR RESEARCH ON BRAIN

ITTSBURGH (PA) -- Infosys c o - f o u n d e r Se n a p a t h y ‘ K r i s’ Gopalakrishnan has donated $1.8 million to the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to establish a research partnership between CMU and the Centre for Brain Research (CBU) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore. Subra Suresh, Indian American president of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said he hoped “this new research collaboration will lead to discoveries about neurodegenerative diseases that afflict the aging population.” “One of the most pressing challenges facing humanity is to understand the human brain. Our hope is that those findings ill help improve our diagnostic and treatment capabilities for such diseases,” said Suresh in a statement. “Carnegie Mellon University is a worldrenowned leader in many areas of research and education,” Gopalakrishnan added. “I am very pleased to support president Subra Suresh’s strategic vision for the collaboration between CMU and IISc through this gift so that we can address one of the grand challenges of our times by understanding the human brain.” The goal of the partnership will be to foster two-way interactions in brain research and education and in areas such as data

Professor Padmanabhan Balaram, IISc director, said in the statement, “As an alumnus of Carnegie Mellon, I know firsthand the enormous impact a collaboration of the kind envisioned here between CMU and IISc will have in enhancing our understanding of the human brain.” Gopalakrishnan co-founded Infosys in 1981, serving as chief executive officer and managing director from 2007-2011. Voted the top CEO in the IT services category in Institutional Investor’s inaugural ranking of Asia’s leading executives, he was elected president of the Confederation of Indian Industry, India’s apex chamber, for the 2013-14 term, and served as one of the co-chairs of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2014. Suresh is the ninth president of CMU, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A distinguished engineer and scientist, Suresh served as director of the National Science Foundation from 2010 to 2013. Before his appointment to NSF, he was the Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was the dean of the School of Engineering from 2007-2010.

While most studies of “senescence” — declines in a cell’s power of division and growth —have focused on later stages of life, the study is intriguing in exploring this phenomenon in early stages.

The new study shows that Spns1, in conjunction with another pair of tumour suppressor genes, beclin 1 and p53 can, influences developmental senescence through two differential mechanisms: the

The study surveyed participants aged 40-70 who had been diagnosed with diabetes. In all, 1,588 people responded to a survey about their diets, including sodium intake. The researchers reviewed data on cardiovascular complications participants experienced over the
