T
he US on May 26 came full circle as after shunning Narendra Modi for over a decade, President Barack Obama vowed to work closely together with the new Indian prime minister “for years to come”. “We look forward to working closely together with the new government to continue to strengthen and expand the USIndia strategic partnership for years to come,” the White House said in a message of congratulations from Obama. As the two leaders “agreed in their call after the election, as the world’s two largest democracies, India and the US share a deep bond and commitment to promoting economic opportunity, freedom, and security for our people
and around the world”, it said. Obama was quick to acknowledge Modi’s “resounding” victory in the Indian election and effectively ended the visa ban on him for his alleged role or inaction during the 2002 Gujarat riots with an invitation to visit Washington. Modi’s victory in the Indian election ended the visa ban on him, says Obama days later. Since then, other US officials including Washington’s first Indian-American point person for South Asia Nisha Desai Biswal have voiced US keenness to engage Narendra Modi.
US President Barack Obama says US will welcome Prime Minister Modi
“The president stated definitely that we will be welcoming Prime Minister Modi,” the US assistant secretary of state for South Central Asia told reporters last week. “We recognize the Indian electorate has weighed in with a resounding mandate for Prime Minister Modi and we want to work with him for advancing his goals for India as a regional and global player,” she said. Biswal, whose parents migrated
from Dahod in Gujarat, said Obama saw the Indian election in a very positive light and looked forward to welcoming Modi in Washington at the earliest opportunity. Kerry too is keen to travel to India. “The mandate the Indian electorate put forward is one that we strongly support and we stand ready to engage and assist when the new government is ready,” the spokesperson added.

WASHINGTON: The US Department of State has announced that Kathleen Stephens will be the new interim US Ambassador to India. She will replace outgoing Ambassador Nancy Powell who had earlier announced her retirement. The search for a permanent Ambassador is still going on, the US State Department said in a statement. “Ambassador Kathleen Stephens will serve as the charge until a new permanent ambassador is nominated and confirmed by the Senate,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “She will arrive in New Delhi in early June.” Stephens is a veteran of the US diplomatic corps, with a career spanning 37-year. She worked in the Peace Corps for a number of years, and joined the US Foreign Service in 1978. Stephens was part of missions in China, Trinidad and Tobago, South Korea, Belgrade, and various places throughout Europe into the 1990s. From 1994-1995, she was the Director for European Affairs in the United States National Security Council, and was the Director of the Office of Ecology and Terrestrial Conservation in the State Department from 2001-2003. Modi urged to utilize resources of diaspora
B
alesh Dhankhar, president of Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP)’s Australia chapter, says Modi’s stunning victory had given the Indian diaspora “a hope of reforms”. “With Modi coming to power, many Indians including me have started the process of returning to India to contribute towards India’s progress,” Dhankhar told IANS in an email interview. “We expect the BJP government to revitalize Indian culture and education system, crippled by mindless borrowing of Western systems. Whereas countries like Japan, (South) Korea, China stand strong on their own philosophy, tradition, and languages, they excel in development and modernization for that reason only.... We expect Modi to review the Indian traditional education system,” he further said. Indian-origin Kenyan banker Hiten Vaya says he wants Modi to use the vast potential India has in its youth to drive the country forward by creating jobs and opportunities for youngsters. “This is a chance for India to really assert herself on the world stage in all spheres,” he said.
Vaya, however, had a note of caution for Modi, who is widely seen in India and abroad as a Hindu hardliner. “I don’t want him to get sidetracked by jingoism or do anything under Hindu nationalists’ pressure which may tarnish his name...

Sikh temple in the US is facing local opposition because of plans to replace its existing prayer hall with a 12,000-sq-ft building with gold domes in a rural neighborhood, media reported on May 27. The construction of a new building has been opposed by the people in Sacramento County in California. Gurdwara authorities are questioning the residents whether race has played a role in the opposition, since building a church does not face any such opposition, the Sacramento Bee reported. The Community Planning Advisory Council is scheduled to hear the Sri Guru Ravidass Gurdwara’s proposal on May 28. County officials have denied claims of racism raised by any project opponents. “When someone keeps complaining without reason, then you might guess that racism is the reason,” a county resident, Ramesh Banger, said.
Charlea Moore, a member of the Community Planning Advisory Council, said neighbors have legitimate concerns about the project, but she said she thinks they can be resolved.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Sharjah-based diaspora organization has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to utilize the resources of Indian diaspora for national development like China did to attain its economic supremacy. “We request more concessions to NRIs for bringing foreign currency into the country. The nonresident Chinese played an important role in the present economic supremacy of China,” Pravasi Bandhu Welfare Trust said in its memorandum to Modi. “India never made any such attempt to effectively utilise the resources of diaspora for the national development,” PBWT chairman K.V. Shamsudheen said in his memorandum. “We request the new government to encourage the businessmen here (India) to join hands with NRIs, for expansion and diversification of their existing ventures,” said the PBWT, established in 2001 for the welfare of the NRIs. Estimated at over 30 million, the Indian diaspora community is today diverse and heterogeneous, representing various regions, languages and cultures.

WASHINGTON: An Indian American student has won the coveted National Geographic Bee championship that includes a $50,000 college scholarship, National Geographic said. Akhil Rekulapelli, 13, hailing from Virginia, outclassed fellow Indian American Ameya Mujumdar in the final head-tohead round of the nationwide contest held in Washington. The geography whizkid also received a trip to the Galápagos with National Geographic’s

The championship question that helped him clinch the title was: “Oyala, a planned city located in the rainforest 65 miles east of Bata, is being built as a capital for which African country?” Rekulapeklli answered correctly: ‘Equatorial Guinea’. Eighth grade student Rekulapelli emerged ahead of more than four million students, who originally competed in school-level bees across the US.

ew Delhi: With the setting sun forming a magnificent backdrop, India got a new prime minister as Narendrabhai Damodardas Modi, 63, took oath on May 26 in a 90-minute, openair, business-like ceremony in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace, attended by leaders of eight neighboring countries. Among the 4,000-strong guests at the epochal event were the Who’s Who of India — politicians, business honchos, cinema stars, inter-faith leaders — as well as diplomatic representatives from over 100 countries. The oath of office and secrecy including pledge of allegiance to the Indian constitution was administered in Hindi to Modi — who wore an off-white kurta-churidar and a fawn-colored Nehru jacket — by President Pranab Mukherjee. Modi becomes India’s 14th prime minister, succeeding Manmohan Singh, who was at the event, along with his Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Modi is the first prime minister born in independent India — and the second from Gujarat. Modi, who led the BJP to a historic victory in the Lok Sabha battle, moved to his South Block office at 8 a.m. on May 27. Leaders of the members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries (SAARC) who were present included Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka, Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and Abdullah Yameen of the Maldives as well as Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan, Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan and Sushil Koirala of Nepal. Najma Heptulla is the only Muslim in the cabinet. The setting was in many ways unique. Contrary to earlier occasions when the short ceremony was held in the stately Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Modi, true to his style as a communicator, chose to have it in the open in order to be able to accommodate many more people, perhaps the largest such gathering for any prime ministerial swearing-in in India. The ceremony was watched live across the nation and in world capitals, on TV and web casts.

ndia’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns on terrorism and need for action in 26/11 during his meeting with his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif on May 27 as the two sides struck a note of optimism and hoped to start a new chapter in their strained bilateral ties. The first meeting between Modi, who assumed charge a day earlier, and Sharif was held at Hyderabad House here with the two sides agreeing that their foreign secretaries will be in touch to discuss the future roadmap for talks. Modi clearly articulated India’s concerns on terrorism at the meeting which was described as a “good, substantive and constructive” meeting by Indian officials. Sharif, who interacted with media before going back to Islamabad, said he had “a very good meeting” with Modi and it was time to open “a new page” in bilateral relationship. Modi “underlined his concerns on terrorism and expressed the hope that Pakistan will abide by its commitment to not allow its territory or territories controlled by it to be used for terrorist activities against India,” Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh told media. Modi also called for a speedy trial of Pakistanis accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. The bilateral relationship between the two countries has been bedevilled by what India views as Pakistan’s hesitation in taking action against the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Sharif had on May 26 joined leaders from SAARC countries at the swearing in of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He met
Twitter praise for Modi’s diplomatic initiative NEW DELHI: There was praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic initiative of inviting the South Asian neighbors, especially Pakistan, to his swearing-in ceremony. “Modi meeting Nawaz on his first day in office is one of the nicest surprises Indian politics has offered for decades,” tweeted British historian and well known author William Dalrymple. A
run Jaitley has turned out to be the most important person in the new government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with three heavy portfolios of finance, defense and corporate affairs, it was announced Tuesday. The Rashtrapati Bhavan released the portfolio allocation of 46 ministers, including 24 cabinet ministers, of the government sworn in Monday evening. Sushma Swaraj is the new foreign minister and Rajnath Singh will head the home ministry. Modi has kept with him, like some of his predecessors, the portfolios of personnel, public grievances and pensions as well as the
departments of atomic energy and space besides any other department not allocated to any minister. He will, as the presidential communique states, be in charge of “all important policy issues”. Rajnath Singh, the BJP president who is likely to hand over the party baton to someone else, gets the important portfolio of home (interior) and Sushma Swaraj gets both external affairs and overseas Indian affairs. M. Venkaiah Naidu, a former BJP president, also gets a lot of responsibility with urban development, housing and urban poverty alleviation as well as parliamentary affairs. Nitin Gadkari, another former BJP president, takes charge of road
transport and highways as well as Shipping while D.V. Sadananda Gowda will the railway minister. V.K. Harsh Vardhan, the former Delhi chief ministerial candidate, is the new health minister while former TV star Smriti Irani gets the heavy portfolio of human resources development.

BJP’s most articulate leader NEW DELHI: A known confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Arun Jailtley is an acclaimed lawyer and one of the most articulate leaders of the BJP. A member of the party’s top decision making bodies, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in the last five years of UPA II. Jaitley, 61, displayed political dexterity to ensure that the Manmohan Singh government did not have an easy time over the various controversies that dogged it. He was a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and held various portfolios including law, justice and company affairs. An election strategist who has scripted many a victory, Jaitley, however, lost the Lok Sabha polls from Amritsar to former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh. He is into his third term as a Rajya Sabha member. Born on December 28, 1952 in New Delhi, Jaitley graduated from Shri Ram College of
Commerce in Delhi and later pursued law at Delhi University. He took interest in politics from his student days and was associated with the ABVP, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. During the Emergency (1975-77) rule of Indira Gandhi, Jaitley was jailed for its entire duration — 19 months. A Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, he was among the party leaders who strongly backed the decision to name Modi head of the campaign committee. Jaitley is among the BJP leaders who are using social media to increase their outreach to people.

in Rajya Sabha, together formed a formidable opposition team to counter the United Progressive Alliance government. Swaraj was a minister in the Vajpayee governments and headed ministries including information
and broadcasting and health. Quick witted and articulate, Sushma Swaraj is well regarded in the BJP for her oratorical skills. She also strongly espouses causes such as cow protection which are close to the heart of BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Into her seventh term as an MP, Sushma Swaraj has had a chequered political career starting as a member of the Haryana assembly in 1977. She was appointed a cabinet minister in the state the same year. She was first elected as a MP in 1990 and became a member of the Rajya Sabha. A lawyer by training, Sushma Swaraj went all the way to Bellary in Karnataka to challenge Sonia Gandhi in the 1999 Lok Sabha election. Though she lost, she gained in stature in the party and outside by her spirited campaign. The BJP
was able to form its government in Karnataka ten years later, the party’s first government in south India. Sushma Swaraj was among the leaders considered prime ministerial candidates in the party before the 2014 Lok Sabha election. She was also not considered close to Modi in political circles and had apparently not batted for him in the way some of her other colleagues had done. However, this did not diminish her standing in the party and she was virtually placed at number three in the cabinet, having taken oath of office after Modi and party president Rajnath Singh. Sushma Swaraj has been re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh. Born in Ambala Cantonment in Haryana, Swaraj studied at S. D. College in Ambala and was given “best student” award. She later studied law at Panjab University.
The thakur from UP has made it IANS, LUCKNOW
A
lmost a decade back after the BJP lost power in Uttar Pradesh under his stewardship, Rajnath Singh cut a lonely figure at his current Ashoka Road residence in the national capital. Sitting cross-legged and shaving, he told an IANS correspondent, gazing through a small mirror he held in front, that life and times never remained the same. It couldn’t be more true for the 62-year-old leader, now No.2 in the Narendra Modi Cabinet. In subsequent years, not only he rose to become the national Bharatiya Janata Party president December 2005-December 2009, he was nominated for the coveted post again in 2013 and led a team that ultimately won the polls for the National Democratic Alliance. Labelled as a ‘wily Thakur’ by many in state politics, Rajnath Singh is known to have friends in all parties and it was for this reason that it was often rumored during the poll campaign that in case the BJP fell short of majority, he could be frontrunner for the post of prime minister. A firm believer in astrology, Rajnath Singh, however, told his close circle of supporters that this was not
possible and stars were by the side of Modi. He openly batted for the Gujarat chief minister thereafter and made it amply clear that there was no ‘plan B’ for the BJP and the only plan revolved around Modi. Still remembered for moving the acclaimed anti-copying law as the state’s education minister which rendered a body blow to the mass copying mafia in Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath Singh is also lauded for his various panchayats like the ‘Kisan Panchayat’, ‘Vyapari Panchayat’ etc. During the years as national president, he has carefully weaved his own constituency of supporters. But in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, he however met with stiff opposition as he gave tickets to political turncoats. He managed to keep the growing dissent in check as he played the ‘Modi-proximity’ card well. He, however, remains a political leader who is not completely trusted among the partymen. Known for his antipathy to Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and his own party senior and former chief minister Kalyan Singh, he was quick to bury the hatchet with Kalyan Singh when it suited him. The hostility was so profound between the two that Kalyan Singh parted ways with the BJP, accusing Rajnath Singh of sidelining him.

Wannabe Miss India to Union minister The life of 38-year-old Smriti Irani has been a saga of meteoric rise to fame and success

A Congress deserter who made good in BJP NEW DELHI: Najma Heptulla, former Congresswoman who joined the BJP almost a decade ago following reported differences with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is the grand-niece of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, freedom fighter and a minister in the first Indian government after Independence. Heptulla held several important positions in the Congress before switching ranks. She was a general secretary of the party and served for four terms in the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. She also served twice as deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. In 2004, Heptulla in an interview to a TV channel accused Congress president Sonia Gandhi of “humiliating” her. She claimed that the Congress leadership of the time had moved away from the ideals of its former leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and her grandfather Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Soon after, she joined the BJP and entered Rajya Sabha. The Congress decried the move as “political opportunism” on her part. Heptulla entered Rajya Sabha for a second time in 2012.
Najma Heptulla In 2007, she contested for the post of vice-president against the current incumbent Hamid Ansari as the candidate of the National Democratic Alliance but lost. Heptulla has a Master’s degree in zoology and a doctoral degree in cardiac anatomy from the University of Colorado at Denver, in the US. In a chat with IANS, Heptulla said “Muslims should have no apprehension” regarding the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.

F
rom promoting beauty products, to contesting the Miss India beauty pageant, to becoming the country’s most sought after ‘bahu’, and on May 26 being sworn in as a minister in the Narendra Modi government — 38-year-old Smriti Irani’s life has been a saga of meteoric rise to fame and success. A star in her own right, Smriti’s political journey started in 2003 when she joined the BJP. Although she couldn’t win when she contested the 14th Lok Sabha polls as the BJP candidate from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi — being defeated by Congress candidate Kapil Sibal — she became a prominent and articulate face of the party on television. In the 2014 general election, the gutsy Smriti took on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi in his pocket borough of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and gave him tough competition. Though she lost, the actressturned-politician, who was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Gujarat in 2011, will now work as an important member of the newly elected government. In her life, every decision she took turned into a stepping stone, taking her closer to stardom and politics. In one of her interviews she was quoted as saying that she started earning after the 10th standard —
the Delhi girl used to earn `200 for promoting a beauty product. But determined to chart her own destiny Smriti, one of the three daughters of a conservative Punjabi-Bengali family, broke free of the norms and decided to try her luck in the glamour world. She sent her application for the 1998 Miss India contest, which was won by Lymaraina D’Souza. She couldn’t reach the finals of the contest but fate took her to Mumbai, the entertainment capital of the country, where she joined McDonald’s Bandra outlet to sup-
Winner of several awards as an actress, Smriti Irani has now embarked on a new journey of a responsible minister port herself while auditioning for work in showbiz. Lady luck was smiling on her and she was called to replace actress Neelam Kothari to host an episode of Ooh La La La. She got that episode and was noticed by producer Ekta Kapoor, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ekta roped her in to play Tulsi Virani in her long running super hit TV show Kyunki… Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Grabbing the opportunity, Smriti’s popularity soared so high
that she became the most popular ‘bahu’ of the small screen. While playing a perfect ‘bahu’ on the small screen, Smriti settled down with her childhood friend Zubin Irani, a Parsi, and carried the role of a wife and mom to her two children — son Zohr and daughter Zoish — with the same effectiveness. She also produced TV shows under her banner Ugraya Entertainment, feeding family viewing audiences with entertainers like Virrudh and Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan. But with an itch to do something more, she decided to plunge into politics while pursuing acting, and her dedication and determination took her places. After holding important positions like the national secretary of the party and All India President of the BJP Mahila Morcha in 2010, she became BJP’s vice-president. Though the party had other actresses too as members, it was the articulate and uncomplaining Smriti who rose above the challenges. Smriti’s once said that she has an “ideological umbilical cord with the BJP...we are three generation party supporters... my grandfather was a swayamsevak, my mother a BJP booth activist”. Winner of several awards as an actress, Smriti, described by many as “Sushma Swaraj of the Modi-led BJP”, has now embarked on a new journey.

A Dalit leader, Paswan and RJD chief Lalu Prasad were widely seen as potential Congress allies in the Lok Sabha election. But in February he surprised everyone by aligning with the BJP to contest Lok Sabha polls. Becoming a Union minister for
the first time in 1989 in the V.P. Singh government, Paswan emerged as one of the most vocal supporters of the Mandal Commission recommendations. He served as a minister in the United Front governments of H.D. Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral. Paswan was also a minister in the NDA government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the UPA-I government of Manmohan Singh. Paswan was defeated in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls but was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2011 with the RJD’s support. He represents Hajipur in Parliament.

Addressing a press conference here on May 28 after Sharif and his delegation returned from the swearing-in ceremony of Modi as India's new Prime Minister, Aziz said the meeting between Sharif and Modi was not just a photo op, but its outcome proved better than anyone's expectations. Aziz said the issues of cross-border terrorism and Kashmir were discussed but not substantially during the bilateral meeting on May 27 in New Delhi. During the meeting, Modi also sought that the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case be expedited, a demand which Aziz described as not a new one from India. The leaders of the two neighboring countries agreed that terrorism was an issue of mutual concern
US applauds Modi-Sharif meeting WASHINGTON: Welcoming the meeting between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, the US said it supported all efforts to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two neighbors. “We continue to welcome any and all steps India and Pakistan take to strengthen and deepen their dialogue and cooperation,” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters on May 27. “We applaud any efforts between India and Pakistan to create economic opportunities for the people of both countries that can contribute to a more secure, stable and

Meanwhile, much hyped meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi hints “at the prospects for peace and the likelihood of trouble in the months ahead”, said a Pakistani daily on
May 28. The editorial titled “A new page?” appeared in the News International a day after Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi met at New Delhi. The Pakistan daily said that Sharif’s India trip for the inauguration of Modi was “in itself such a seismic event — the first time ever for a Pakistani leader — that it would have been unrealistic to expect any substantive breakthroughs”.
hina and India need not be rivals and can in fact work together on development issues, a leading Chinese daily said on May 27. In an editorial “Congratulations to Modi”, the China Daily said Western rhetoric about China and India “is seldom free from a conception that the two countries are rivals”. “Yet as two developing countries pestered by wealth and development gaps, China and India can work together when it comes to development,” it said. It underlined that Beijing and New Delhi have, by and large, managed their differences well over the decades — “proof they do not have to be (rivals)”. The editorial said on Modi’s election victory and inau-

Iran greets Narendra Modi TEHRAN: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated newlyelected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his party’s victory in the recently-concluded parliamentary elections and expressed the hope that Tehran and New Delhi will enhance bilateral relations, media reported on May 27. “Undoubtedly, your election, which was marked by mass participation of people from all walks of life, indicates the full confidence of the Indian nation in your developmental and prudent policies,” the semi-official FARS news agency quoted the Iranian president as saying in his message. Rouhani also wished more success for Modi and prosperity for the Indian people.

Asked if the US played any role before or during the meeting, the official said: “Not that I’m aware of, no.” On Modi’s “overture” to see Bangladesh and Pakistan on the same frontline in containing extremism, Psaki said: “Well, we’ll see what happens. We support efforts to address terrorism around the world, but I don’t want to speculate on events that haven’t yet happened.”

s President Barack Obama announced plans for Afghanistan after ending US combat mission by year end, the US hoped India, Pakistan and Afghanistan would help provide greater stability and security in the region. India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif had set a “constructive tone from the very beginning,” a senior administration official told reporters on May 27 in a background briefing on Obama’s plans. Under Obama’s plan to “bring America’s longest war to its responsible end,” the US which currently has 32,000 troops in Afghanistan will keep 9,800 troops there after December 2014. The US will then gradually withdraw troops keeping only a small residual force by the end of 2016 -just three weeks before his presidency ends. Obama said Americans have learned it was harder to end a war than to start one. “We have to recognize

Afghanistan will not be a perfect place, and it is not America’s responsibility to make it one.” The role of US troops in Afghanistan after this year will be aimed at “disrupting threats caused by Al Qaeda, supporting Afghan security forces and giving the Afghan people the opportunity to succeed as they stand on their own,” he said. However, the US plan depends on the Afghans sign-
ing a bilateral security agreement. “With respect to India, I think we’ve seen a constructive tone set from the very beginning by Prime Minister Modi and by Prime Minister Sharif, who was one of the first leaders to speak to” Modi after his election victory, the US official noted. “We always encourage India and Pakistan to pursue dialogue that can reduce tension,” he added.

Trinidad PM hails meeting PORT-OF-SPAIN: Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar has hailed the meeting between newly-elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. In a message congratulating Modi for becoming India’s new prime minister, Persad-Bissessar noted that the “unity shown as Mr. Modi took the oath of office before Kamla Persad thousands of guests, Bissessar including his counterpart from rival Pakistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is heart-warming”. She added that this is the first time since the two countries won independence from Britain in 1947 that, “a prime minister from one state has attended such a ceremony in the other”. She referred to the strong ties which Trinidad and Tobago enjoys with India and which were “brought alive” during her official visit to India in 2012 where she was awarded the Pravasi Bharaitya Samman award.

Defeat of vote bank politics The pole position occupied by the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty has changed to an extent that the iconic Congress party is struggling to stay alive

hen Narendera Modi was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister on May 26 evening, the world’s largest democracy was marking the ushering in of a new era. Over 2,500 privileged guests witnessed not only the culmination of a perfect storm generated by the Modi-led BJP but also the burial of the Nehruvian legacy which the Congress dispensation used as a leitmotif for over three generations. It marked the day when Modi-led India was keeping another tryst with the destiny. But, unlike the impoverished, battered and bleeding country Jawaharlal Nehru addressed on August 15, 1947, Narendera Modi is poised to pilot a much more confident, self-assured and youthful
India to a position among the global equals. It is a sheer coincidence that Modi’s first day in office also marks the 50th death anniversary of India’s first prime minister. The events which have unfolded in India earlier this month have changed the political landscape for all time to come.

It is a sheer coincidence that Modi’s first day in office also marks the 50th death anniversary of India’s first prime minister. Any which way you look at the results of the 16th Lok Sabha elections, you cannot help noticing the tectonic paradigm shift in a number of ways. The pole position occupied by the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty has changed to this effect that the iconic Congress Party is
ment to the Indian democracy that a person with such humble origins has been elected to lead the second most populous country in the world. Most of the political pundits commenting on the Indian politics concur that Modi would have to hit the ground running.
The charismatic Gujarati leader has done even better as he covered massive distances in the air even before hitting the ground. Narendra Modi has his work cut out for him. He faces enormous challenges to kick-start the slowing growth trajectory and to implement his inclusive growth model. Modi would also have to walk on a tight rope to keep the aspirations of the ultra-right BJP and Sangh Parivar adherents in check. Modi is the Indian Pied Piper who carries the burden of hopes and aspirations of his billion plus compatriots. The usually-ignored people of Assam are also among such hopefuls. Such a massive swing in favour of the BJP in Assam reflects the hopes of a section of its population which would like firm steps to be taken to stop the perceived infiltra-
tion of Bangladeshis into the state. The changing demographics of Assam is a major issue for a majority of the indigenous population who often complain of being swamped by the alleged migrants from the neighbouring country. Modi would have to ensure that the fencing of the international border with Bangladesh is undertaken on a war-footing. Modi’s ascension to the highest executive post in India is being seen as a positive development Down Under. The Indian Prime Minister’s determination to align diplomacy with trade and investment priorities has given hope to the Australian mandarins that new opportunities would open for this South Pacific country and, as Australia India Institute chief Amitabh Matoo has mentioned in a recent write-up, it is an opportunity Canberra must seize.

ndia is looking forward to the tenure of its 14th Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, hoping that he would take the country out of the muddle and disorder that is driven by deeply ingrained thoughts and beliefs. We, as Indians would have to fight battles of the mind to overcome the challenges we face. Once the center for commerce and innovation, India lags behind its former glory. The task ahead is to achieve its initial standing from where it can progress further.
But the minds of the people are contaminated now, and the epidemic has spread too far and deep for mere economic reforms to bail the country out. Economic development, income inequality and quality of Life are the areas of utmost importance. Enough has been written on this, though as a citizen one would like to state that every single day we struggle with the basic necessities of life. Water, power and food are still unavailable to some while the majority of the population is sustaining in rationed amounts of each across the country.
Our school systems are creating mundane workforces of androids who can rote learn but not question. Innovation and creativity comes at a premium in India. People do not wish to think for themselves. They exist in a pseudo environment, created by the self and for the self. They are secure and content and refuse to benchmark themselves on global scales. The call is to dismantle the edifice of archaic thinkers within the education system and shunt them out. Indians are hygiene-loving people and clean their houses every day, sometimes multiple times.
Our school systems have failed to generate young and dynamic workforce.
The call is to dismantle the edifice of archaic thinkers within the education system.

Dentist loses license after patient dies
E
BY A STAFF WRITER
nfield, CT-An Enfield dentist with a history of malpractice has had his license suspended after a patient undergoing bone grafts and the extraction of numerous teeth died under his care. Dental regulators suspended Dr. Rashmi Patel’s license on April 21. Patel faces a hearing before the Connecticut State Dental Commission. The patient, Judith Gan, 64, of Ellington, died at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield on February 17. According to a four-count statement of charges filed against Patel, he failed to “properly respond to J.G.’s oxygen desaturation and/or respiratory distress and/or cardiopulmonary distress.” State health inspectors also reported that Patel failed to properly gauge the duration of the procedure or of the anesthesia; failed to accurately determine how many extractions and implants were necessary, and never properly identified a method for monitoring the patient while she was under anesthesia. About two months before that, on December 19, 2013, while Patel was extracting another patient’s teeth, the patient “aspirated the throat pack,’’ reported inspectors with the state Department of
Dr Rashmi Patel Public Health. In that case, Patel failed to properly monitor the patient’s response to conscious sedation, and failed to remove the throat pack in a timely way. That patient survived, said a DPH spokesman. The other counts in the charging
statement allege that on various occasions, Patel “improperly delegated” to a dental assistant or hygienist the induction of nitrous oxide or Midazolam to a patient, as well as the monitoring of a patient’s response to conscious sedation. Inspectors also found at least five expired medications in his office. On September 16, 2011, a Litchfield Superior Court jury ruled in favor of another Patel patient who had sued him for malpractice after he severely damaged her mouth and teeth in a reconstructive procedure, according to the lawsuit. The jury awarded Doreen Jasonis $442,000. After the verdict, Patel’s lawyers filed an appeal, and then both sides settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. Patel’s lawyer, Michael Kogut, called the state investigation flawed. “(Patel) is highly skilled and respected in the field of sedation dentistry,” said Kogut. “The record is clear that these allegations and what has been reported are not founded in accuracy or fact, even to the point that this arbitrary action was taken against Dr. Patel before the cause of death was determined. The Department of Public Health has again acted outside its limitations.” Patel’s Enfield and Torrington offices remain open, said Kogut.
business and community organizations, including the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Women Business Owners, the National Urban League, US Black Chambers, Inc., the US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce, the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and other trade associations that allow Wells Fargo to help provide financial education and resources focused on serving the needs of small businesses in diverse communities across America. Wells Fargo has one of the largest networks of team members serving the financial needs of small business owners nationwide. The company has approximately 32,000 bankers in its retail stores who help provide financial guidance to small business owners and consumers across the country, including small business specialists. Additionally, Wells Fargo has a team of Business Banking relationship managers in locations throughout the US, and phone bankers who serve small business owners 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The launch of Wells Fargo Works for Small Business will coincide with the company’s Small Business Appreciation Celebration, which runs May 1 – June 30. This annual event, which started before National Small Business Week in May, highlights the accomplishments of small businesses and provides business owners with time- and money-saving offers on Business Platinum Credit Card with Rewards, Merchant Services and Business Payroll Services.
US killer on the run for 7 years nabbed in India BY A STAFF WRITER

mit Muddamalle Livingston, one of the America’s most wanted fugitives, has been arrested in Hyderabad, India. Livingston was absconding since 2007 after a US court sentenced him for 23 years in prison for killing his girlfriend. In 2008, the state of Texas had issued a red-corner notice through the Interpol. Acting on the information given by the Crime Investigation Department, the police arrested Livingston in Madhavapuri Colony, Sainikpuri in Hyderabad. Livingston, born in Hyderabad, was convicted in 2007 for the murder of his girlfriend Hermilia Garcia Harnandez. The 404th Judicial District Court, Cameron County, Texas, had sentenced him to 23 years in prison. Livingston had pleaded guilty in February 2007 to killing his married girlfriend and dumping her body on the beaches of South Padre Island. The 45-year-old medical transcriptionist was reportedly a fan of singles chat websites and social media. He used to enjoy face-to-face dates.

Andhra girl youngest to India’s Ayhika wins junior girls’ title at Slovakia Open climb Mount Everest IANS, NEW DELHI
HYDERABAD: A 13-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh on May 25 became the youngest female climber to scale Mount Everest. Malavath Purna along with 16-year-old Sadhanapalli Anand achieved the historic feat, according to information reaching social welfare department here. After a 52-day-long expedition, the duo pitched the national flag and the picture of B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s constitution, atop the world’s highest peak. What made their feat extraordinary is the fact that they both come from rural and poor backgrounds and are students of educational institutions run by the government. While Purna hails from Tadwai village of Nizamabad district and is a class 9 student at Gurukul Pathshala, Anand is studying in class 11 at the social welfare college in Khammam district. Both the districts are in Telangana region. The girl’s parents are agricultural laborers in a small village in Nizamabad district while Anand’s father works as a mechanic.

Chandhok, Senna to drive for Mahindra Racing IANS, MUMBAI

ndia’s Karun Chandhok and Brazilian Bruno Senna will team up as the driver pair for India’s only team on the grid — Mahindra Racing — in the inaugural season of the FIA Formula E Championship. Formula E is the world’s first fully electric racing championship which will have 10 rounds, starting
in Beijing on September 13 till the final race in London June 27 next year. Ten teams of two drivers each will run the zero emissions SRT01E racing cars with its batteries producing 200kw, the equivalent of 270bhp. Neither Chandhok nor Senna are strangers to racing fans, both having competed and also being teammates previously in Formula 1 and GP2. “Karun and Bruno both
represent the perfect balance between experience and youthful enthusiasm for this truly ground breaking championship. I am confident they will do their best to represent Mahindra on the world stage and the entire team is aiming for top results from the start,” Mahindra Racing team principal Dilbagh Gill said. Preparation is already underway with the first car having been deliv-
ered to Mahindra Racing recently. The car has been painted with the team’s new livery — a combination of Mahindra red and the colors of the Indian flag. “I’m very excited to be a part of the Mahindra Racing line-up. To be a part of the only Indian team in this series is a real honor for me,” said Chandhok. “It’s also going to be a nice reunion for me with Bruno again.”

Men acquire
‘perfect style’
at 37
Many males under 37 admit they struggle while shopping as they don’t know what looks good on them IANS, LONDON
I
t takes men 37 years to reach maturity as far as their style is concerned, according to a new study. The survey, conducted by money saving site NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, has indicated that almost a quarter of men under the age of 37 admit they struggle when shopping as they don’t know what looks good on them, compared to just eight per cent of those over 37, reports femalefirst.co.uk. One in six men surveyed, turned out to be anti-shoppers, and admitted they grab whatever looks okay to keep their shopping trip quick, while more than a quarter of men are so unsure about what to buy they wait until something they like is worn out or broken before replacing it. One in six men admitted they turn to friends for style guidance because they simply don’t know where to start, while one in 11 looks to celebrities for style inspiration trusting they’ll pick up fashion tips from the red carpet. “It seems style confidence comes quicker to men than women, but 37 years is still a long time to wait to hit your fashion prime. While it is good to rely on a few failsafe brands and items, why not experiment a little with color or style as something new might look brilliant,” said Anita Naik, consumer editor at VoucherCodes.co.uk. Hollywood celebrities Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Farrell are two 37year-old men who are definitely style confident. Both can regularly be found on best dressed celebrities’ lists with their dapper looks and sharp suits.

P
eople love holidaying on beach, but they do not know how to keep their skin glowing. Expert gives tip to protect skin to have that beautiful beach holiday look. Jill Zander, founder of the Jill Zander Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, shares tips to keep skin looking beautiful in the summer sun and beyond, reports femalefirst.co.uk: n Sun protection: Use a sunblock daily. Always include your neck, décolleté and backs of hands and reapply frequently. n Antioxidants: We become more sensitive as we get older to external stresses, as a result of free radicals produced by environmental pollution, car exhaust fumes, UVA and UVB and cigarette smoke. Invest in a scientifi-
cally proven home care regime to protect your skin with vital nutrients providing good antioxidant protection enriched with vitamins C and E. n Repair sun damage: When it comes to sun damage, vitamin A is the most valuable skin care nutrients applied to the skin. Vitamin A helps to smooth sun damage, giving less wrinkled skin and also helps to even out skin tone. n Use a good facial scrub: It is required to remove oil, dirt, impurities and dead cells to improve texture and restore natural glow. Do it at night only. n Summer scent: Never apply fragrance to the skin in the day. Oil of Bergamot, often used as a fixative, can cause photo sensitivity and pigmentary problems. Only apply in the evening.
