2 million Hindus key voting bloc in swing states
Congressman Krishnamoorthi
"I feel it is so important to elect Joe Biden because of a Hindu value 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (entire world is a family) a core tenant of Hindus - we believe in treating everyone with dignity and respect," Krishnamoorthi said.
The US president has made an argument to denounce the use of voting by mail saying the method is susceptible to large-scale fraud HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that people in the state of North Carolina should vote twice in the November election, once in person and once by mail, although doing so is a crime. “Let them send it in and let them go vote,” Trump said in an interview with WECT-TV in Wilmington, North Carolina, when asked about the security of mail-in votes. “And if the system is as good as they say it is then obviously they won’t be able to vote” in person. Voting more than once in an election is illegal.
Facebook moves to target misinformation before US presidential polls
With just two months left until the US presidential election, Facebook says it is taking more steps to encourage voting, minimize misinformation and reduce the likelihood of postelection “civil unrest.” The company said Thursday it will restrict new political ads in the week before the election and remove posts that convey misinformation about Covid-19 and voting. It will also attach links to official results to posts from candidates and campaigns that declare premature victories.
HiIndia Newsdesk The two million Hindus in the United States are a vital and key voting bloc in several swing states this presidential elections, Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said as he told fellow community
members that it was their dharma to exercise their franchise. In his virtual keynote address at the formal launch of the ‘Hindu Americans for Biden’, Krishnamoorthi, who is the three-time Democratic Congressman from Illinois, urged community members to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his Indian American running mate Kamala Harris on November 3. President Trump was the one who first recognised the voting potential of Hindu Americans in 2016, when he not only addressed a rally for Hindus in New Jersey, but also his family members visited Hindu temples in key battle ground States like Virginia and Florida.
US hints at October Covid vaccine surprise
Health experts say they do not understand how there could be adequate data on whether the vaccines work and are safe before November 1 HiIndia Newsdesk
The US federal government has told states to prepare for a coronavirus vaccine to be ready to distribute by November 1. The timeline raised concern among public health experts about an “October surprise” — a vaccine approval driven by political considerations ahead of a presidential election, rather than science. In a letter to governors dated August 27, Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said states “in the near future” will receive permit applications from McKesson Corp, which has contracted with CDC to distribute vaccines to places
including state and local health departments and hospitals. “CDC urgently requests your assistance in expediting applications for these distribution facilities and, if necessary, asks that you consider waiving requirements that would prevent these facilities from becoming fully operational by November 1, 2020,” Redfield wrote. He wrote that any waivers will not compromise the safety or effectiveness of the vaccine. The Associated Press obtained the letter, which was first reported by McClatchy.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson: Actor and family had Covid-19
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says he and his family had all contracted Covid-19. The former wrestler, who is now the world's highest-paid actor, said he, his wife and two daughters caught the virus despite being "disciplined" about health protection. He said the positive tests were "a kick in the gut". Now, he added: "We're on the other end of it and no longer contagious. Thank God, we're healthy."
The order also relieves Air India of any further reporting requirement regarding its ground handling arrangements.(MINT)
HiIndia Newsdesk The United States has announced that it plans to restore Air India’s ability to self-conduct its ground handling operations at American airports. Issuing an order in this regard, US Department of Transportation reversed its previous order of July 2019 that had suspended the right of Air India to self-handle at US
airports. The Department and other US government agencies have continued to work with the government of India towards satisfactory resolution of this matter. In that connection, recent positive developments have led the department to tentatively determine that the public interest now calls for removal of the permit condition we had imposed in order 2019-7-9, said the order issued by Joel Szabat, Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Aviation and International Affairs. “We therefore have tentatively decided to amend Air India’s permit to remove that condition,” the Department of Transportation said. Stakeholders and public have 21 days to respond to this proposal, before it can be finalised and enforced. The order comes a day after the Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, had a conversation with the Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. “India and the US have partnered in Aviation sector during these difficult times,” the ambassador tweeted. The order also relieves Air India of any further reporting requirement regarding its ground handling arrangements.

Congress piles economy Hate Speech: BJP Telangana heat on Modi, Nirmala MLA banned from FB, Insta Rahul Gandhi persists with charge that unorganised sectorbeing destroyed deliberately to hand over the 'advantage to India’s biggest billionaires'
HiIndia Newsdesk The Congress on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had lost the moral right to continue in office even “for a moment” for destroying the economy, which threatens to push over 40 crore people below the poverty line. Rahul Gandhi persisted with his charge
that the informal or unorganised sector was being destroyed deliberately to hand over the “advantage to India’s biggest billionaires”, adding that the November 2016 demonetisation was the first major step towards that. Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala said: “Why has the Prime Minister not spoken on the economic crisis so far, even as the quarterly growth has dipped to -23.9 per cent. HiIndia Newsdesk WASHINGTON, DC -U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is modifying its policy on implementing the requirement that aliens leave the United States for at least 30 days after two renewals of their CNMI-Only Transitional Worker (CW-1) visa classification. Effective immediately, USCIS will only consider CW-1 petitions approved on or after June 18, 2020, when we apply the requirement that certain CW-1 nonimmigrant workers depart the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) for a period of at least 30 continuous days. For example, any alien approved on or after June 18, 2020, for a one-year CW-1 validity period beginning Oct. 1, 2020, will be eligible for two more consecutive petition validity periods after the first period of validity expires on Sept. 30, 2021

HiIndia Newsdesk New York: A NASA-funded research led by a team of Indian-origin scientists in the US has developed lighter, faster-charging batteries suitable for powering a spacesuit, or even a Mars rover. Shailendra Chiluwal, Nawraj Sapkota, Apparao M Rao and Ramakrishna Podila, all of whom are part of the Clemson Nanomaterials Institute (CNI) at the Clemson University in South
Carolina were part of the team that created these batteries. Podila, an assistant professor in the College of Science's department of physics and astronomy, said the revolutionary new batteries could soon be used in US satellites. Most satellites mainly get their power from the sun. But the satellites have to be able to store energy for when they are in the Earth's shadow. "We have to make the batteries as light as possible, because the more the satellite weighs, the more its mission costs," Podila said. The research, which was funded by NASA, appeared in the American Chemical Society journal Applied Materials and Interfaces. Podila said that to understand the group's breakthroughs, one could visualise the graphite anode in a lithium-ion battery as a deck of cards, wherein each card represents a layer of graphite that is used to store the charge until electricity is needed. The problem, Podila said, is that "graphite cannot store much charge". The team opted to work with silicon, which can pack more charge, meaning more energy can be stored in lighter cells. Rather than a deck of cards made of graphite, the new batteries uses layers of a carbon nanotube material called "Buckypaper", with the silicon nanoparticles sandwiched in between.
Drone delivery at home to get Punjab-born restaurateur making waves in Norway a boost in post Covid era
HiIndia Newsdesk New York: The Covid-19 pandemic has given a tremendous boost to online delivery platforms and retail drone technology will see a commercial rollout on a larger scale in the not-too-distant future, Indian-origin researchers have stressed. The study found that both the number of last-mile warehouses and the delivery speed of the drones will increase as technology matures. In other words, last-mile delivery networks will become more decentralised, with drones operating at increasingly faster
Humanity and Community Service During COVID-19 Crisis by ACAC in St. Louis
HiIndia Newsdesk ST LOUIS, MO -American Cricket Academy & Club (ACAC) stepped up when COVID-19 crisis hit St. Louis when the lockdown was announced on late March. ACAC wanted to help the needy by preparing sandwiches, serving cooked meals and by delivering food items trough pantries. ACAC has so far delivered 14,000 meals to several food pantries namely St. Patrick Center, St. Louis Foodbank, Operation Food Search, The Salvation Army, and Loaves & Fishes. Several volunteers including kids and families of ACAC work tirelessly week after week to prepare sandwiches, procure food items and make deliveries every Friday till date in the community.
speeds. “It would be reasonable to assume that drone technology is maturing quickly. The Covid-19 pandemic will perhaps hasten this process,” said Dr Milind Dawande, professor of operations management at The University of Texas at Dallas’ Naveen Jindal School of Management. Hands-free delivery to one’s doorstep will be an advantage drone can offer in the post-Covid era. In the new study, published online in Production and Operations Management, three faculty members from Naveen Jindal School of Management explored how drone delivery could change retail logistics networks. The analysis showed that while perfect customisation of delivery-time guarantees is more profitable, retailers can capture a sizeable portion of the profit by partitioning their market into a few zones and offering the best-possible delivery-time guarantee for each zone.

Rioters destroy Indian-origin family's car dealership in US
HiIndia Newsdesk New York: "Everybody watched it burn to ashes. Nobody did nothing about it, nothing," Kenosha News on Saturday quoted family member Anmol Khindri as saying. The newspaper said that he

Josie Rodriguez, who lived next to the destroyed car dealership, told Kenosha News that when she phoned the police and fire emergency number, the operators told her it was not safe for firefighters to respond to the scene and did not respond. Protests erupted in Kenosha following the August 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 27-year-old Africa-American man. The motive of the shooting by a white police officer remains unknown. The Federalist, said: "We didn't have anything to do with this. I am a minority too. I am a brown person. HiIndia Newsdesk Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga is now the most preferred candidate among the public to become the next prime minister, surging in popularity after he entered his party’s leadership race, an Asahi Shimbun survey showed on Friday. The survey highlights the growing momentum for Suga, the government’s chief spokesman, who emerged as the frontrunner to replace Prime Minister Shinzo Abe this week after
securing the backing of several of his party’s key factions. Suga has 38% of the public’s support, ahead of 25% for former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba who had previously led several media opinion polls. Fumio Kishida, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s policy chief, came in last with 5%. In a June Asahi survey, Ishiba led a pack of seven potential contenders with 31% while Suga had just 3%. A longtime aide to Abe, who is resigning due to poor health, Suga said on Wednesday he had decided to run for party leader to avoid a political vacuum during the coronavirus pandemic.
Trump urges Iran not to execute champion wrestler
Yang Hengjun: Australian writer held in China 'will fight to the end'
Yang Hengjun was arrested at Guangzhou airport in January last year and later accused of spying - charges denied by him and the Australian government. Australian officials have previously said Dr Yang has faced daily questioning in shackles, but no trial. He denied Chinese reports he had made a confession, Australian media reported. "I am innocent and will fight to the end," he said in a message passed on by relatives. "I will never confess to something I haven't done."
US and Rwanda officials meet over Hotel Rwanda hero arrest The US assistant secretary for African affairs, Tibor Nagy, has held talks with Rwandan ambassador to the US over the arrest of Paul Rusesabagina, who was portrayed in a Hollywood film about the Rwandan genocide. Rwandan officials said Mr Rusesabagina, 66, was arrested under an international warrant for leading "terrorist movements". But his daughter told the allegation was false. Mr Nagy tweeted after the meeting with Ambassador Matilde Mukantabana that the US government expects Rwanda “to provide humane treatment, adhere to the rule of law, and provide a fair and transparent legal process for Mr Rusesabagina”.
Israel and UAE in historic direct flight following peace deal
US President Donald Trump has called on Iran to overturn a death sentence passed down on a champion wrestler who took part in protests two years ago.
HiIndia Newsdesk "To the leaders of Iran, I would greatly appreciate if you would spare this young man's life, and not execute him," Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday. Navid Afkari, 27, was handed two death sentences over the murder of a security guard during protests in Shiraz.
But there are concerns his confession was extracted under torture. His brothers Vahid and Habib were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison in the same case, according to human rights activists in Iran. Citing a Fox News report, Mr Trump said the wrestler's "sole act was an anti-government demonstration on the streets". Earlier in the day, US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortegus tweeted: "We join the world in outrage at the Iranian regime's death sentence for Navid Afkari, who was tortured into giving a false confession after participating in peaceful protests in 2018." "The regime also tortured his two brothers and sentenced them to decades in prison. Let them go!" A number of international wrestling figures and activists have also called for the brothers' release, and a petition calling for Afkari's life to be spared has been signed more than 10,000 times.
The El Al airliner made the three-hour trip, carrying a delegation of Israeli and US officials. The flight was allowed to cross Saudi Arabian airspace, normally blocked to Israeli air traffic. The UAE has become only the third Arab country in the Middle East to recognise Israel since its founding in 1948. On Saturday, the UAE repealed a law boycotting Israel which had been in place since 1972, and earlier this month the two countries opened direct telephone services for the first time. The agreement to normalise relations - brokered by the US - was made public in a surprise announcement on 13 August. Flight LY971 - numbered to represent the UAE's international dialling code - carried delegates including Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and Israel's National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat.

Karnataka plans ‘Rice ATMs’ to provide food grains 24×7 to ration cardholders
HiIndia Newsdesk The Karnataka government is planning to install rice-dispensing machines for ration card holders under the Public Distribution System (PDS). These machines, which the government is calling as ‘Rice ATM’, will be set up in various places across the state. According to the Karnataka Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K Gopalaiah, Rice ATMs will be installed to ensure 24X7 rice availability to those who have ration cards and will potentially do away with the need to wait in long queues in front of ration shops. The idea of setting up Rice ATM’s came from Vietnam and Indonesia where authorities have set up rice-dispensing machines to provide free rice to their citizens during the Covid-19 lockdown. K Gopalaiah said, “The department will set up two rice ATMs in the state to check the feasibility of the initiative, later if the project is a success the same will be extended across the state.”

ctor Neha Dhupia is back with season 5 of her popular podcast No Filter Neha, this time in an at-home edition. The season premiered on audio streaming service JioSaavn recently, with Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan as the first guest. No Filter Neha has grabbed listeners’ attention for its candid chats with celebs from across fields. Q. What’s that one factor which keeps bringing you back to every new season of No Filter Neha? Dhupia: There are multiple factors, but definitely, the prospect of a great conversation brings me back. Q. And what do you think the audience likes about the show? We’ve been doing this for half a decade, and we’ve clearly received so
much love. I think because we bring out the human side of the celeb in every conversation, we understand the essence of a little bit of laughter, and I myself am a light-hearted person. Q. What has been your personal favourite episode this season? Dhupia: I’ve always been a very big Sourav Ganguly fan. So that’s been my personal best. Apart from that, we waited for Saif for five years to come on our show. I’m looking forward to Pankaj Tripathi. Then there’s Neena Gupta and Kapil Dev. There are a bunch of people. Our guest list has always been wonderful. Q. Five people from across the world you’d want to get on your show? Dhupia: Meryl Streep, Barack Obama, Shah Rukh Khan, Roger Federer and Priyanka Chopra. Q. If you have to re-invite a guest, how do you keep the episode relevant, apart from their work? Dhupia: We had Karan Johar backto-back for three years and we made sure it was relevant. It’s kind of hard to give away trade secrets, but we try to make conversations which we’ve not had before.
Sunil Grover: People forget positive side of the industry

"If any star volunteers to come on the show, we will welcome him/her with open arms, but that is not the format of the show," he says. While several television actors have reportedly slashed their fee to adapt to the tough situation, the actor has taken it a step ahead. "The team has been kind enough to not renegotiate my remuneration much. The show will provide an earning opportunity to several people. I will be donating my earnings from it to those affected by the pandemic." Over the past decade, Grover and previous collaborator Kapil Sharma have become the face of comedy on television. Sonam Kapoor watches Tenet, says nothing can compare to big screen cinema
It appears Sonam Kapoor loved Christopher Nolan's Tenet and the big screen experience.
Many wondered if cinema chains or even the theatrical experience will survive the pandemic as many films that were earlier going to release in theaters have found a new home on streaming services. Tenet is said to be a film tailor-made for the big screen as is the norm with Christophe Nolan. The movies features eye-popping visual effects and action sequences. It stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh and Dimple Kapadia among others.

She shared, “What started off as a fun special edition, very quickly became my sole agenda. I gave my all to every stunt that I performed on the show. Also, the team always showed immense faith in me and encouraged me to go and give my best. I did not want to let go off the second opportunity that the channel gave me. I wanted to win, and I would not have been at ease with any other result. Winning the season brought a sense of happiness and satisfaction.”

He opened up about his bond with Boseman and how they were “forever linked.” Michael B Jordan wrote, “Everything you’ve given the world … the legends and heroes that you’ve shown us we are … will live on forever. But the thing that hurts the most is that I now understand how much of a legend and hero YOU are. Through it all, you never lost sight of what you loved most. You cared about your family , your friends, your craft, your spirit. You cared about the kids, the community, our culture and humanity. You cared about me. You are my big brother, but I never fully got a chance to tell you, or to truly give you your flowers while you were here.” I wish we had more time. One of the last times we spoke, you said we were forever linked , and now the truth of that means more to me than ever. Forest Bathing

How to make bell pepper sandwich
In Japanese, ‘shinrin’ means forest while ‘yoku’ stands for ‘bath’. In other words, this Japanese practice is a form of nature therapy where one absorbs the beauty of the forest through their senses, which, in turn, is believed to boosts physical and mental wellbeing. How to do ‘forest bathing’
First, you need to find a spot, suggests Dr Li. Start walking aimlessly and slowly, but make sure to not carry devices like a phone or camera. “The key to unlocking the power of the forest is in the five senses. Let nature enter through your ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hands and feet,” writes Dr Li. “Taste the freshness of the air as you take deep breaths. Place your hands on the trunk of a tree. Dip your fingers or toes in a stream. Lie on the
ground. Drink in the flavor of the forest and release your sense of joy and calm. This is your sixth sense, a state of mind. Now you have connected with nature. You have crossed the bridge to happiness,” he further explains the process. A two-hour forest bath will help you to unplug from technology and slow down. It will bring you into the present moment and de-stress and relax you. Numerous studies I’ve conducted have shown that shinrinyoku has real health benefits
Bell pepper sandwich is being deemed healthy as it is keto-friendly
In this sandwich, you can use two slices of bell pepper or make an open sandwich with a single slice. The filling can contain meat, cheese, and vegetables of your choice. Bell pepper sandwich is being deemed healthy as it is Keto-friendly — it omits carbohydrates present in the bread and replaces it with a vegetable. Some nutritionists have also pointed out how the sandwich is an easy way to cut down on calories. Some other experts, however, pointed out that the dish is nothing but a small salad. Fitness blogger Lucy Mountain, for instance, shared a picture on Instagram and captioned it, “There isn’t anything inherently wrong with pepper, tomato, cheese and chicken. But combining them and calling them a bl**dy sandwich implies bread needs a substitute because it’s ‘bad’. And it is really really really not.”

elebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor was live on Facebook page to share his self-isolation experience. He offered quick and easy tips on how to build immunity du r i ng t he ongoi ng l o ckd ow n .
“Nutrition is a large part of health. If we eat healthy, we stay healthy,” said the 55-year-old. The Indian kitchen is full of health. The box of spices that we have in our kitchen is equivalent to a medicine box and that is why in ancient times, doctors and cooks had the same respect and importance.Healthy and balanced eating has always been of importance but the focus has increased now. One of the best things is haldi/turmeric. Haldi has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Add a bit of it in everything you make. You can have a glass of hot water with haldi in it, you can add tulsi and ginger too. These days, people are talking a lot about dalgona coffee, I will suggest you whisk turmeric milk and have it, nothing’s better than that. For Vitamin C, eat citrus fruits, capsicum, Indian gooseberry and broccoli, but with focussed consumption. You can also take turmeric and jaggery, and make little tablets of sorts. Whenever you have a sore throat, have one of those tablets and you will be fine. Also, take care of your sleep pattern. Sleep is important to boost your immunity.

hile most of us are working from home, we are reading extensively on how we can stay productive in these times. A great chunk of work productivity depends on how we are dressed every day when we sit down for work. It is but obvious that the vast majority would be preferring pajamas over pants. And while comfort is key, you need to understand that what you wear every day can affect your output and general mood. So, if you are wondering what is the point of making an effort when all you have to do is get up and find a place at the dining table — or sometimes on the bed — here is what you need to know. Working from home is a challenge, because no matter how many days have passed, the brain will always find it difficult to stay focused when you are in the comfort of your house. There could be many different distractions, pressing household chores that may need your immediate attention. And while you must not entirely ignore them, know that they may, somewhere, affect your daily output. When you dress up a certain way, however, you signal your brain to get more professional. You are now aware that your work hours have begun. Think of it as little
Given that most of our daily activities, including eating habits and exercise routines, have taken a hit owing to the lockdown, digestive issues like constipation may be troubling you. But before popping a pill for relief, you can try Vajrasana, also known as the Diamond Pose or Thunderbolt which help aid the digestion process. The asana also helps relieve constipation that usually happens due to reduced physical activity and reduced intake of dietary fibre among other reasons. Some common mistakes that could be causing constipation: — If you drink a lot of coffee and tea. — If you do not follow a disciplined schedule to sleep and wake up. — If you put too much pressure while on the toilet seat.
How to do Vajrasana
*Bend your knees. Roll your calf muscles out. Point your toes behind. Sit. Release the buttocks in between the heels. Sit for 4-5 minutes in this pose. *If you have trouble sitting in this posture, you can alternatively use a block to sit on. *If you have been constipated for more than a week, try this Vajrasana variation using a blanket. -Get a blanket, fold it and then roll it. -Put it on your mid-calf muscles and release yourself down. -Ensure your hips are down. Press the hamstrings against the blanket. Diwekar recommended that one should do Vajrasana at least 4-5 times a day for at least 4-5 minutes. Maintaining a straight posture and upright spine can do the trick

cues that you give to your brain on when to start and when and how to finish. You have to understand that even though you are at home, you are working and getting paid for it. So, it would be ideal to get more disciplined and more professional in your approach. Dressing up can potentially change your approach, and also subtly tell your family members, flatmates and/or friends that you are ready for the day. If you are a fan of makeup, wear something light, just so you can feel good and optimistic about the day. This will automatically make you feel more productive. Without being too elaborate, here’s what you can wear every day: * A pair of pants, not pajamas, that can give the illusion that you are getting ready to commute to work. * A different footwear, not your usual home slippers. * A crisp shirt (for men), or a well-ironed kurta (for women), especially when there is a work meeting. * Some accessories — bracelets, earrings, anything that can put you in a better mood. * A tee shirt that is not too formal, but not too casual either. Basically anything except for the one that you have woken up in.

Sony Bravia TVs benchmarked over the years. This is going to be a tough pick for you. it leaves enough ground clearance below the TV for you to slide in a soundbar and it wouldn’t get in the way of the screen itself. Secondly, the stand is designed in such a way that you don’t have to tighten any screws on the TV itself—you simply attach the stand to its mount and slide that into the fixed slot on the TV. I haven’t seen the wall mounting system for this TV. As far as the extensive picture quality tech that Sony bolts on to Bravia TVs, particularly the 4K HDR ones is concerned, the Bravia X8000H has it covered. At least for the most part. Finally, the cable management system doesn’t utilize the feet of the stand to thread the power and HDMI cables through it, and instead has two hooks that bind the cables together—at some point, those wires will show up behind or beneath your TV, even if for a short enough length.

8 step Guide

To Completely Cut Out Sugar From Your Diet
Mistakes You May Be Making While Trying to Lose Belly Fat
Sugar is also known to be addictive, the moment you consume something sugary, the brain rewards you with happy hormones. Here is an 8 step guide that can help you cut out sugar in no time.
Vitamin C intake is key to better muscle strength in later life Older people who eat plenty of vitamin C - commonly found in citrus fruits, berries, and vegetables - have the best skeletal muscle mass, according to new research. Published in the Journal of Nutrition, the study was lead by the University of East Anglia (UEA). This is important because people tend to lose skeletal muscle mass as they get older - leading to sarcopenia (a condition characterised by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function), frailty, and reduced quality of life. Lead researcher Prof Ailsa Welch, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School said: “As people age, they lose skeletal muscle mass and strength. People over 50 lose up to one per cent of their skeletal muscle mass each year, and this loss is thought to affect more than 50 million people worldwide.
1. Say no to added sugar: Stop adding sugar to any of your meals, be it your glass of milk or your early morning cup of coffee. Instead, switch refined sugar with healthier options such as stevia and jaggery initially and subsequently cut them down too. 2. Change your breakfast menu: It is very much possible for the cereals and granola bar you consume early in the morning to contain a lot of sugar. Instead of having these, you can switch to healthy alternatives like a peanut butter sandwich using whole wheat bread or natural steel-cut oats with no added sugar, along with a glass of fresh fruit juice. 3. Cut down the cakes: Most of us don’t have cakes and pastries in your refrigerator all the time, so avoiding them can be the easiest step in the journey. Often, you tend to start craving such food items when you happen to see them, so try not to order any (even for guests) and maybe unfollow some of those food bloggers on social media for the time being. 4. Swap the fizzy drinks: You can switch the fizzy carbonated drinks with more refreshing beverages
Retain Muscle Mass As You Age Ageing is a natural process. But with the growing age, some people may start losing a lot of muscle mass and gaining fat, especially around their abdominal and hip region. While for some it could be due to any injury or fatigue, for others it may be due to hormonal imbalances. But retaining muscle mass and losing the extra fat can be difficult. The natural loss of muscle mass with age is medically called sarcopenia.
Ways to retain muscle mass 1. Adding protein to your diet: As we age, we must keep on adding protein-rich foods such as chicken, eggs, fish, soy, dairy and legumes in our diet as protein is the primary source for building muscle mass. Moreover, the more muscle mass you gain, the faster your metabolism gets, thus helping in fat loss. 2. Sleeping well: Sleeping soundly is necessary to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and hormones, all of which can help retain and build muscle
mass. Most of the muscle recovery occurs while you are sleeping. 3. Not forgetting to exercise: Staying physically active throughout your life can help prevent the loss of muscle strength. A combination of strength training (which includes lifting weights and bodyweight exercises) and aerobic exercises (such as brisk walking, swimming and running) can help in improving muscle strength as well as overall health.
such as lemonade, watermelon juice, homemade ice tea, coconut water and even infused water. You can add anything in the water that does not contain sugar and satisfies your cravings. 5. Read the label: Just step into your kitchen and read all the nutrition labels present on every packed food item. If any of that food contains more than a couple grams of sugar or is high in carbs, such as durum wheat pasta or potato chips, throw it out. Try to buy more food items which are high on protein and even healthy fats such as natural (unsweetened) peanut butter. Maintain the habit of reading labels every time you go grocery shopping. 6. Avoid simple carbs: Simple carbs are the foods which are used by the body as fuel to produce short-term energy. Foods like white bread, refined flour (maida), table sugar, white rice and candy are some examples of simple carbs that are high on sugar content. Instead of consuming these, you can switch to complex carb sources such as multigrain bread, millets or oats and whole grains. 7. Protein pack diet: A diet rich in protein would help you feel full for a longer period of time. Meat, poultry and fish are rich sources of protein. Vegetarians can consume tofu, legumes, nuts, nut butter, seeds, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, soy and yoghurt as they are also considered as great sources of protein. 8. Make snacks for yourself: Instead of eating sugary snacks, you can consume protein-rich snacks such as nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds), yoghurt with hemp seeds, energy bars made with bananas and oats, and hummus with whole wheat bread. These snacks are not only sugar-free but also delicious.
Health Benefits Of Turmeric 1. Turmeric for inflammatory bonepain Curcumin in turmeric has antiinflammatory properties which help in relieving the pain and inflammation that occurs due to plantar fasciitis, bursitis or arthritis. You can consume turmeric daily by adding one teaspoon of it in your regular tea or a glass of warm milk. 2. Turmeric for respiratory disorders Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties which help in relieving inflammation caused during various respiratory conditions like sore throat, cough, tonsillitis and bronchitis. You can even consume turmeric capsules if you’re not getting enough of it in your diet. However, talk to your doctor before taking these capsules.
3. Turmeric for better heart health Several studies have shown that curcumin can improve the function of the endothelium (inner layer) of the heart. Scientists compared the effects of curcumin with the cholesterol-lowering drug given to prevent heart diseases, atorvastatin, and found that both were equally efficient. Another study included 121 people, who had to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery and were given either a placebo or 4 grams of curcumin per day, a few days before and after the surgery. The results of the study showed that the curcumin group had a 65% reduced risk of experiencing a heart attack in the hospital.
You love the wrong foods too much Fried, junk, processed, sugary, cheesy and rich - if that’s how you like your food, then that’s the primary reason behind your visceral fat. All of these foods are packed with sugar, salt, trans fats and other unhealthy compounds your body finds difficult to

metabolize and therefore stores as fat over your abdomen. Your diet should instead have fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts and seeds. You smoke If you think lighting up gives you better control over your appetite and helps you lose weight, here’s some news. Heavy tobacco use has been linked to an increase in visceral adiposity and abdominal obesity by almost all recent studies from around the world. Smoking may reduce your cravings, but it pushes all the fat deposits into the belly, leading to pot bellies. You don’t drink enough water Drinking sufficient amount of water throughout the day is very important for your metabolism. Not only does increased water intake burn calories, but it also flushes out all the toxins in your system. If you have belly fat and don’t drink enough water, it’s likely you won’t lose that weight unless you change this habit. You are too stressed For a lot of people, stress induces overeating - which is a top reason behind a pot belly as well as overall obesity. Increased stress can shoot up the cortisol levels in the body, which in turn can increase abdominal fat deposits. This increase in cortisol and belly fat is especially observed in the case of women. You live without movement There’s no healthy weight or fat loss without exercise. It’s simply not possible to lead a wholly sedentary lifestyle with minimal mobility and not gain a fair amount of fat around the abdomen. If you’re inactive then severe abdominal obesity is probably never going to resolve itself.

Naperville Complete Count Committee Rolls out Third Edition of the Panel Discussion on 2020 Census, via Virtual Mode BY A STAFF WRITER NAPERVILLE, IL - The 2020 Census Naperville Complete Count Committee (CCC) rolled out third edition of the Panel Discussion on Thursday, August 27th, at 6:00 pm, on https:// www.facebook.com, with representatives from Local, County, and State Governments, US Census Bureau, and Naperville Area Community Organizations. The panelists provided deep insight into the 2020 Census and activities that their respective organizations are undertaking in the final five weeks of the 2020 Census. The Panel Discussion was conducted under the stewardship of Mayor Steve Chirico, City of Naperville and Mark R. Rice, Liaison, CCC, 2020 US Census, City of Naperville. Mark R. Rice, who moderated the Panel Discussion, welcomed the panelists. He said that as of August 27th, Naperville, with an 83.3% Census Self-Response Rate for cities over 140,000 residents, ranks #1 in the entire United States. “Naperville will be able to surpass a staggering 85% self-response rate, by the end of September, thereby retaining its top response rate for U.S. cities with a population of at least 140,000”, he added with a sense of pride. Rice thanked the CCC Member, Ashfaq Syed, for working tirelessly on the Committee, developing the face-book page, and asking the panel questions, submitted by the audience. Mayor Steve Chirico, in his opening remarks, said that the flag of Naperville will continue to fly high, in terms of highest Self-Response Rate for cities over 140,000 residents, only when people realize their collective responsibility in the matter, reach out to those who have not filled out their Census Questionnaires, and encourage them to do so at their earliest. “Naperville’s level of federal funding is highly dependent upon our population. There is so much at stake with this Census and the need of the hour, therefore, is to ensure that every one fills out his or her Census information, well before September 30”, he stated and added that the federal funding will be will be greatly instrumental in giving a big boost to development trajectory of Naperville. Ms Marilyn Sanders, Chicago Regional Director, US Census Bureau said that in the 2020 Census everyone counts, including children 0-5, seniors, immigrants, college students and people experiencing homelessness. However, she stated, as of now, Illinois has a 16.5% non-response

follow up completion rate. Taking this into consideration, she stated that the Census takers are using an array of innovative initiatives to continue to follow up with the non-responding households and to make them fill out the Census questionnaires, in person, or online at 2020census.gov, or by phone at 844-330-2020, or by mail. Anne Stava-Murray, IL State Representative from the 81st District said that Census would be greatly instrumental in understanding the unique profile of different segments of the population of a district. “We have been using a variety of techniques to maximum our outreach, especially among the hard-to-count persons, in order to correctly understand the profile of people in our district. The successful execution of Census in Naperville will be a source of inspiration for other districts”, she said. Robert B. Berlin, DuPage County State’s Attorney said that being counted is crucial to gain access to a fair share of an estimated $880 billion in federal tax dollars, which determines quality of schools, representation in the government, as well as roads and bridges. He called upon people to fill out the Census Questionnaire, without any fear, as Census Bureau cannot disclose individual data or personal responses no matter what, for any
purpose or any reason. Judith Brodhead, Naper ville City Councilwoman and Professor at North Central College underlined the importance of Census data in understanding the population dynamics in their true and total frame of reference. “It is through the Census data that we can see how our communities are aging or getting younger, how many people typically gather together to live in households or live alone, and how our ethnic demographics are shifting” she stated and added that the Census Bureau provides easy online tools for researchers to compare community-tocommunity, or State-to-State, or to see how their communities compare to the rest of the country. Natasha Grover, Indian Prairie School District 204 Board Member said that their organization has contributed to creating wider awareness about Census 2020 by placing relevant information about the Census on their district website, including the websites of each of their 33 schools, Wheatland Academy, Twitter feed, etc. Dave Della Terza, Executive Director, Naperville Public Library said that for every additional person counted in Naperville, the library receives money to help fund their services. Keeping this in view, he said that the library has been proactive in the successful execution

for several area hospitals including St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri Baptist, Mercy and SSM Hospitals. Also served numerous nursing homes and rehab centers to help in preventing the spread or contracting the deadly virus. ACAC helped in making the delivery process seamless and helping the frontline workers to protect the community. ACAC was involved in distributing the cloth masks to the community citizens by organizing cloth mask drive. The cloth
masks were distributed in the City of Chesterfield and City of Dardenne Prairie. This effort yielded a lot of success in ensuring that all have access to quality masks to fight the pandemic together to succeed against it. Finally, youth of ACAC was involved in writing cards for the elderly to inspire them during this time of loneliness and sharing their love to them. This was well accepted and was an excellent social activity to uplift our elders.
of 2020 Census. Towards this, he added, the library launched a number of initiatives, including promoting Census 2020 through its marketing channels, uploading relevant information on social media, hosting Census Enumerator Training Programs, providing assistance to people in filling out Census information, etc. Janet Derrick, VP Cares Program, Loaves and Fishes Community Services said that their organization has developed a media plan to promote the Census 2020 among all their constituents, advised all individuals calling for assistance if they have not completed the Census, provide computers to their clients to enable them to complete the Census questionnaires online. Ms Saily Joshi, Chairperson, Indian Prairie School District 204 - Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) said that the Census is directly tied to their ability to offer services that will allow each student to be supported during their education. “At PDAC, we kept working on a social media campaign on our Face-book page to educate our parents. Our goal is to make sure each family in Dist 204 is counted”, she added. The presentations were followed by a Q &A Session. Mayor Chirico made the closing remarks and wrapped up highlights of the Panel Discussion.
Indian American Family’s Car Dealership was Destroyed by Rioters in WIsconsin
BY A STAFF WRITER KENOSHA, WI – An Indian American family’s car dealership was set ablaze by rioters in the protest-hit city of Kenosha, Wisconsin, destroying nearly 100 vehicles and causing damages worth $2.5 million, according to family members. “Everybody watched it burn to ashes. Nobody did nothing about it, nothing,” family member Anmol Khindri told. The newspaper said that he estimated the losses after the first attack on Aug. 23 at about $1.5 million and after a second the following day at $2.5 million. Protests erupted in Kenosha following the Aug. 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 27-year-old African-American man. The motive of the shooting by a white police officer remains unknown.

State Sen. Villivalam: IDOT Joining Diversity Initiative is Positive Step Forward BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago), Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, was pleased to see the Illinois Department of Transportation announce their vote to establish a standing diversity committee, in conjunction with the other member agencies of the Mid-American Association of State Transportation Agencies. This announcement came shortly after Villivalam and the Senate Transportation Committee held a hearing centered on increased transparency, diversity, and equity at IDOT. “Transportation agencies are major job creators here in Illinois,” Villivalam said. “Not only do our workforces and
workplaces need to follow diversity and inclusion guidelines, they need to be fair and representative of the communities they serve.” The new committee is designed to allow member agencies to learn from one
another on diversity issues and other shared transportation challenges, as well as to share information and strategies among member states on issues of diversity and inclusion. The purpose of the effort, spearheaded by the Mid-America Association of State Transportation Officials, is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated and balanced transportation system that will best serve the needs of its member states. MAASTO is affiliated with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and its member states include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Devi Mandir Napa Ashram Burned Down in Northern California Wildfires BY A STAFF WRITER NAPA, CA- With fires raging throughout California at a historic rate, tragedy was bound to fall on many people. The Napa Temple and Ashram property has been completely destroyed by the LNU Lightning Complex fire, according to a news release. The temple, dharmashalla, kitchen and Shree Maa’s house and all of the outbuildings burned completely to the ground, it said. The temple tragedy struck over the weekend of Aug. 22 and Aug. 23, though Swami Satyananda reported that part of his office survived, but all the utility, water and sewer lines were destroyed, making the Napa property completely uninhabitable, the release said. Some of the residents who were staying on the property were evacuated with only the clothes on their backs. “While each of us will experience this sadness in our own way, I want to encourage you to look for the positive as well,” Satyananda said. “Please find in this the inspiration to move forward with Shree Maa and me and our entire Devi Mandir Family into a new beginning, which shares the love and
wisdom of the Gurus; a new beginning that focuses on sadhana; a new beginning that reaches beyond the four walls of where you live and into the global community through the application of digital solutions for our sharing,” he said. The fire tragedies come during a year
that has borne witness to many tragedies, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has taken the lives of more than 180,000 people, as well as altercations amid protests stemming from the unjust killing of Black individuals by police forces.
NYC Gyms Reopen After Months Of Coronavirus Closure BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY - Pack a mask in your bag and prepare for a more-spacious indoor workout as New York City’s gyms reopen under strict guidelines. Gyms are set to start reopening Wednesday for the first time since March, when coronavirus closures swept over the city. The reopening comes with strings attached — applications, health inspections, a 33 percent capacity limit and mandatory mask wearing. But even with restrictions the reopening likely will be welcome for gym goers and owners, especially after doubts were raised they would go forward after Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s announcement they could reopen. Mayor Bill de Blasio worried the city’s health inspectors would be too busy making sure schools could reopen. Health

officials appeared to solve the problem by conducting virtual inspections. More information on the city’s gym reopening guidelines can be found here. Gym customers should check with their
gyms to see where they stand on reopening, if at all. Indoor gym classes and pools will remain closed under coronavirus restrictions.

New York School Reopening Pushed Back To Sept. 21
Mayor Bill de Blasio. (Photo:NYC Mayor’s Office)
BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK , NY — New York City schools’ return to in-person classes has been pushed back until Sept. 21. The 10-day delay is part of a deal with educator unions announced Tuesday by Mayor Bill de Blasio. The deal appears to avert a potential teacher strike that loomed before the previously-planned Sept. 10 full reopening. “What would have happened on Sept. 10 now happens on Sept. 21,” de Blasio said. De Blasio said the deal gives teachers set additional days — Sept. 10, 11, 14 and 15 — to prepare for returning to classes amid the coronavirus pandemic. There will then be a three-day “transitional period” starting Sept. 16 in which all instruction will be remote, de Blasio said. In-person classroom instruction will begin on Sept. 21, officials said. The deal sets up a monthly medical monitoring program that includes random COVID-19 tests for students and staff, de Blasio said. “Yes, that will be done on a mandatory basis,” he said. Jay Varma, the city’s senior advisor on public health, said the monitoring program is focused on people physically present in schools and will look for a 10 to 15 percent sample size in its tests. Any child who is sick or shows signs of coronavirus infection should stay out of schools and get tested, Varma said. The city will set up testing vans and sites at schools for added coverage to its 200 COVID-19 testing locations, de Blasio said. The deal was struck with two unions — the United Federation of Teachers and Council of School Supervisors & Administrators — that raised vocal concerns over de Blasio’s push to bring students back to classrooms on Sept. 10. The UFT even threatened to strike over safety concerns — an action barred by state law. UFT President Michael Mulgrew struck a more conciliatory tone Tuesday as he sat beside de Blasio for the announcement about the deal. He called it an example of how to get things done. “We will have a stronger instructional program because of all we’re about to do over the next two weeks,” Mulgrew said. De Blasio called the deal a “revision” that gives teachers and educators more time to prepare but also ensures students get back to school soon.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin: The Real Voice for Immigrants BY SENATOR RAM VILLIVALAM CHICAGO, IL -U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and I share a special background as the sons of immigrants. My parents came to the United States in the 1970s, and Senator Durbin’s mother came here as a young child. We were taught the lessons of hard work, perseverance, and middle class values from our immigrant parents. And with those lessons in mind, we have been able to represent Illinoisans at both the state and federal levels. But our stories are not unique—it is this history and hard work of immigrants that makes America so special. As the first Asian American elected to the Illinois State Senate and the first Indian American elected to the Illinois General Assembly, I know Senator Durbin as a true champion for all immigrant families. As the one of the Senators who originally introduced the Dream Act 20 years ago, Senator Durbin has been fighting for immigrants as long as he has been in public service, and it is for this reason that I have been astonished and disheartened at the reaction of some in the immigrant community to Senator Durbin’s attempts to make several key reforms to improve Sen. Mike Lee’s (R-Utah) original Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act. These reforms include early filing to protect immigrant workers and their families who are stuck in the backlog; an annual green-card set
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin
aside for immigrant workers who are ineligible for early filing because they are overseas; a oneyear delay in implementing a section of the bill to protect immigrant workers with pending green-card applications; and the 50-50 rule, which protects American jobs and prevents the exploitation of immigrant workers. Despite Senator Durbin’s concerns about Senator Lee’s original bill, mainly that it includes no additional green cards and therefore will not reduce the green card backlog, Senator Durbin sat down with Senator Lee to resolve their differences. And in recent weeks, Senators Durbin and Lee came to a compromise and attempted to pass that compromise legislation on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Unfortunately, Senator Rick Scott, Republican of Florida, objected to this
compromise by Senators Durbin and Lee, and therefore, the legislation did not pass. I would ask the immigrant communities who are behind Senator Lee’s legislation to consider the following: Today it is other immigrant communities that Donald Trump and Republicans want to target. Tomorrow it could be you. Wouldn’t you want people to stand together in a way where every community can thrive and prosper? This “Divide and Conquer” strategy, as it relates to the different immigrant communities, by Donald Trump has been a longstanding, deep concern of mine. The notion that the TrumP Administration and Senate Republicans are pro-immigrant is absurd. They are cynically using this issue to appeal to immigrants, who are rightfully frustrated and who have faced severe injustices, with a flawed solution. If you are serious about achieving a resolution, let’s sit down and try to work it out, just as Senator Durbin has done time and time again. Don’t smear the record of someone who has fought for our communities for decades. The President and his apologists in Congress have stopped all immigration measures in the Senate. No committee action, and no meaningful floor debate. Instead of smearing a true champion of all immigrants, please join me in calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to hold a hearing on legislation to address the green card backlog.
Cook County Health Experts Available for New Virtual Patient Advocate Program BY COOK COUNTY HEALTH NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO,IL - Cook County Health experts are available for the following topics: Despite decades of research and recommendations, health disparities in birth outcomes persist for African American women who are more than two times as likely to deliver a low-birth weight infant and more than four times more likely to suffer life-threatening complications as compared to white women. To help combat these disparities, Cook County Health is the first site in Illinois to offer Gabby, an onlineartificial intelligence character that acts as a virtual patient advocate to help identify potential health risks in at-risk women who are planning to become pregnant. Dr. Mark Loafman, Chair of Family and Community Medicine for Cook County Health, who
is leading the project, is available for interviews. Please contact Elizabeth Pedersen at 312-805-1557 if interested. With the weather headed into the 90’s today, it’s a good time to remind residents tips on staying cool as well as the importance of continuing to wear a mask. A Cook County Health physician can be available to discuss this today. Please contact Caitlin Polochak at 312-519-2769 if interested. Cook County Health has a trauma
social worker who has done work on generational/historical trauma and the impact on communities (with regards to the cycle of violence). Given the gun violence numbers in Chicago this summer and the events in Kenosha, she can speak about the long-lasting impact violence has on individuals and communities as well as the impact that seeing violence firsthand can have on young children. Please contact Kate Hedlin at 312-805-2038 if interested.

“These two men conspired to burn their business to the ground and collect on the insurance payment,” said Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. “I’m proud of the coordination between our investigators and the local authorities to bring this case to a conclusion and get these individuals into custody.” Insurance fraud is a felony punishable by imprisonment for two to 10 years, or by a fine of up to $10,000.00, or both. Indian American Identified as First Homicide Victim of Year in Cary, North Carolina
Selvaraju Vellingiri
BY A STAFF WRITER CARY, NC-The Cary (North Carolina) Police Department Aug. 28 identified 55-year-old Selvaraju Vellingiri as the man found dead in the city’s first homicide of the year. The Indian American was found dead in the 100-block of Connemara Drive on Aug. 27. The investigation into his death is ongoing, according to reports. No charges have been filed as Cary Police work around the clock to identify suspects and investigate leads. At approximately 4:05 p.m. on Aug. 27, Cary Police responded to a report of shots fired in the Somerset community in western Cary. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a man with gunshot wounds in the vicinity of the community pool on Connemara Drive. Preliminary autopsy results released Aug. 28 confirmed the identity of the victim as Vellingiri, originally from Coimbatore. Vellingiri (known to friends and family, simply as Selva) started off on his favorite activity of speed walking on the afternoon of Aug. 27. No one who met Vellingiri can forget his quiet disposition. Behind that silent demeanor was a kind soul, who never refused anyone help and empathized with the lot of strangers and acquaintances alike, his obituary read. An engineer and an MBA graduate from India, Vellingiri came to the state as a business consultant in 1999. After establishing financial independence and a tedious wait, he married the love of his life, Kalaiselvi Sulur, in 2004. Bound by their shared passion for Tamil, their native language, both of them engaged robustly with the activities of the Tamil Sangam, earning Vellingiri many friends in Michigan, Florida, and in Cary, N.C., the obituary added. Vellingiri even served on the Board of Directors of the Cary Tamil Sangam. He was also a staunch follower of the Isha Foundation, which is dedicated to raising human consciousness through individual transformation. Members of both communities will miss his gracious nature, it said. Above all, Vellingiri was a doting husband and an indulgent father to his only daughter, Anandhi. She affectionately recalls many hours of playing “Barbie,” and “pushcart” with him, the obituary added.
