BRIEFS Andhra blind school officials held for beating students HYDERABAD: The director and principal of a school for blind in Andhra Pradesh were on July 21 arrested for beating up their students. The arrests were made after parents of the children staged a protest and attacked the Greenfield residential school for blind at Thimmapuram near Kakinada in East Godavari district and the district collector ordered a probe into the incident, which came to light after four days. Video clips of Director K.V. Rao and Principal Srinivasulu caning the blind children were released to the media Monday, leading to an outrage. The director himself is blind and he was seen mercilessly caning the children with the help of Srinivasulu, who was holding the students.

PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar tried to hold back his smile when a legislator called him a “parallel prime minister” in the Goa assembly on July 22. Speaking on the first day of the month-long assembly session, independent MLA Rohan Khaunte said Parrikar, known for his proximity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is as good as a “parallel prime minister”. “We all know honorable chief minister’s position in Delhi. He is as good as a parallel prime minister,” Khaunte said. A smiling Parrikar jokingly suggested the legislator had flipped around his initials “MP” the wrong way.

her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, text of which was released here on July 22. Disagreeing with the idea of installing buoys on the India-Sri Lanka international maritime boundary line (IMBL), Jayalalithaa refered to a suit pending in the Supreme Court against the transfer of Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka said the state government does not consider the maritime boundary as a settled issue. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and secure the release of Indian fishermen and their fishing boats from Sri Lankan custody. In a letter to Modi Jayalalithaa said: “I request your immediate intervention to secure the release of the 43 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and their 55 fishing boats, including the 46 mechanized fishing boats.”

amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa urged the central government to pursue the idea of sustainable fishing by Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen and disagreed with a proposal to instal buoys to demarcate the international maritime boundary. “During the talks between the fishing communities of two countries, there has been a clear recognition that fishing by both the countries could co-exist with both sides agreeing over the fishing days and a thrust given to sustainable fishing practices like use of gill nets and long liners,” said Jayalalithaa said in

said: “We have written x a letter to the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) board to cancel the recognition it granted to Vibgyor High School, in which a minor student was allegedly sexually assaulted by two of its staff members.” The commissioner also issued a show-cause notice to the school why no objection certificate (NOC) issued to it by the state government should not be withdrawn in light of the horrific crime. In yet another heinous incident, a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a juvenile in a village 30 km from here while her parents were away from home, police said. The incident occurred late on July 18 when the 16-year-old accused sexually assaulted the child, taking advantage of her parents’ absence from home at Thatteguppe village,” said a police official.

RBangalore ustom Kerawalla, chairman of Vibgyor High International School in this tech city, has been arrested in connection with a sixyear-old student’s rape in the school premises by its two staff members over three weeks ago, a top police official said on July 23. “Our investigation team arrested Kerawalla from Daman & Diu on July 22 night and brought him to the city for his culpability in the heinous crime,” city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi told reporters here. A case was also registered against the school for not informing the child’s parents and the area police about the incident, which occurred July 2 on its premises. Earlier, hundreds of enraged

parents demanded arrest of the two teachers accused of sexually assaulting a six-year-old student in a private school here, even as the Karnataka government directed the ICSE board to cancel the school’s recognition. “We want the two accused arrested and tried in a fast-track court to do justice to the child victim. Why are they (police) not acting fast? How long they want to interrogate the accused,” Nandish Reddy, a parent of a ward reading in the school, told IANS here. Though the horrifying incident occurred July 2 in the premises of Vibgyor High School, it came to light July 15 when the victim’s parents lodged a complaint with police, as the school management failed to act against the accused. ‘California death penalty unconstitutional’ President Obama extends support to Morocco plan

IANS, WASHINGTON

A

United States federal judge has declared the death penalty in the state of California as unconstitutional. “The dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system has resulted, and will continue to result, in an inordinate and unpredictable period of delay preceding their actual execution,” U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said, according to EFE. According to the Carney, delays have created a “system in which arbitrary factors, rather than legitimate ones like the nature of the crime or the date of the death sentence, determine whether an individual will actually be executed.” Of the more than 900 people sentenced to death in California since 1978, only 13 have been executed, Carney said. With this ruling, the judge overturned the death penalty against Ernest Dewayne Jones, who was convicted April 7, 1995, of the 1992 rape

WASHINGTON: United States President Barack Obama has extended support to Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara in line with the policy adopted by the last three United States administrations.

and murder of a 50-year-old accountant. “Allowing this system to continue to threaten Mr. Jones with the slight possibility of death, almost a generation after he was first sentenced, violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment,” Carney said. The ruling comes after another judge in California determined that the system of lethal injections

needs to be revised because there exists a substantial risk that an inmate will experience extreme pain during the injection. Lethal injection has been the object of heavy criticism in recent months after the complications that occurred during the execution of a prisoner who died of a heart attack more than 40 minutes after receiving the supposedly almost instantly fatal injection.

This “explicit support” is a recognition by Washington of Morocco’s King Mohammed VI’s regional leadership and stabilizing force in Africa, according to Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council. It is also a recognition, at its real value, of the constructive role played by Morocco in order to reach a final solution to this “artificial conflict”, Pham told Maghreb Arab Press (MAP). The Sahara conflict broke out after the self-proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic by the Polisario Front of the Sahrawi people in 1976. The expert on African affairs also noted that this support went beyond the Sahara issue to include a strong partnership between Washington and Rabat in order to establish a triangular cooperation in Africa, mainly in the sectors of security and development. — IANS

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in her reply to a debate on the Gaza violence, said the need of the hour was to support the Egyptbacked ceasefire proposal. Sushma Swaraj denied charges that the Narendra Modi government was changing the country’s foreign policy vis-a-vis Palestine. India, she told the Rajya Sabha, desired good relations with both Israel and Palestine. More than 600 Palestinians have been killed and over 3,000 injured in Israeli military attacks on suspected hideouts of the Hamas militant group that has fired rockets into Israel. Sushma Swaraj dismissed opposition charges that the government was silent on the issue, saying it had reacted to the Gaza bloodshed at the BRICS summit in Brazil.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who was also mentioned by Katju in his blog, steered clear of the raging controversy and told CNN-IBN news channel that former law minister H.R. Bhardwaj had explained everything and he had nothing to add. AIADMK members in the Lok Sabha charged their arch-rival DMK of interfering in the appointment of the high court judge when Katju was the chief justice in 2004 and sought to know who in the DMK had pressurized the then UPA government not to take action against the judge.

During zero hour in the Lok Sabha, a Congress MP from Kerala sought a discussion on the issue. Shiv Sena MP Anant Geete said that such an incident never took place.

Soon after the pronouncement of the order, Roy’s counsel told the court that he was “deeply pained” by its order. “I am really astonished by the order and deeply pained” that the court continues to take “so strict a view after so many months of incarceration”, he said. At this, Justice Thakur retorted: “Your astonishment that started with the earlier bench and continues. We are not sitting in an appeal.”

day after former Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol slapped a `1 billion defamation notice against a popular news magazine, the publication on July 22 released a video of a sting operation that showed a ‘tantrik’ was employed to obtain clues about the killers of renowned rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. The sting video by Outlook magazine also lays hollow the claims by Pol that he had never met reporter Ashish Khaitan

or the ‘tantrik’ — retired police officer Manish Thakur. The magazine had run a story in its July 14 issue alleging that Pune police had requisitioned the services of the ‘tantrik’ to summon Dabholkar’s soul and get clues on his mystery killers. Dabholkar was shot dead on August 20 last year. Even after more than 11 months having elapsed since he was gunned down during his morning walk, police have failed to solve the killing, and handed over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Alleging that the magazine article was defamatory, the 2012 President’s Medal winner Pol shot off a `1 billion defamation notice to Outlook editor Krishna Prasad and reporter Khaitan. Pol’s lawyer Harshad Nimbalkar said his client (Pol) had already denied the contentions in the magazine article which were “per se defamatory, false, frivolous and intended for cheap publicity” that lowered the public standing of the retired police officer. He also announced plans to file a separate criminal case against Khaitan.

A press release said USINPAC chairman Sanjay Puri said India will need about $1.5 trillion over the next five years to finance its infrastructure needs. “Since infrastructure projects are generally structured in a debt equity ratio of 70:30, it implies that India would need over $1 trillion of debt funding over the next five years. Are Hindutva hawks back? By reviving the demand for Varanasi and Mathura shrines, VHP recalled the slogan which was raised by the saffron cadres after Babri Masjid demolition AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he latest reported observations of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) supremo, Ashok Singhal, echo what the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue, M.S. Golwalkar, said in his 1939 publication, We, or Our Nationhood Defined. In it, the Hindutva icon had given an outline of what the minorities can expect in India. “The foreign races in Hindusthan,” the RSS guru had written, “must either adopt the Hindu culture and language, must learn to respect and hold in reverence Hindu religion, must entertain no ideas but those of glorification of the Hindu race and culture ... or may stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment, not even citizen’s rights.” Seventy-five years later, Singhal’s statement shows that little has changed so far as the saffron worldview is concerned. In an interview to the Hindustan Times, he has said that the “Muslims will be treated as common citizens — nothing more, nothing less. And they must learn to respect Hindu

‘Indian Muslims must stand up to radical ideologies’ RAJAQUE RAHMAN, DELHI

S

piritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has urged the likes of Syed Imam Bukhari and Zakir Naik to go to Iraq and preach peace to ISIS. Sri Sri is not only prodding them to take the responsibility of mitigating the sufferings in Iraq but also underlining that their brand of Islam runs the risk of encouraging ISIS-type of fanaticism in India. What’s happening in Iraq and Syria is not a conventional ShiaSunni conflict. It is a case of motivated groups of wrongly indoctrinated fighters going out of control and playing havoc. They are killing Sunnis, Sufis, Shias and Christians. Their call for Caliphate is just a camouflage to spread Wahhabism in areas traditionally dominated by spiritually-

oriented liberal Muslim sects. Tragically, rogue groups patronized by the Wahhabis rule thousands of square miles in this area today. And that’s scary. Following an orthodox form of Islam that insists on a literal interpretation of the Quran, the Wahhabis believe that all those who don’t subscribe to their brand of Islam are to be hated, persecuted, even executed. And from Algeria to Afghanistan to Iraq, they have done that religiously. Osama bin Laden to Mullah Omar to now Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, all are propagators of this school of thought. The root of hatred is systematically nurtured in the madrassas of Saudi Arabia and exported all over the globe. The religious curriculum in Saudi Arabia teaches children as young as 13 that in Allah’s eyes, people are of just two

types. Wahhabis, the blessed ones, and the rest. What Islam needs today is not a movement towards orthodoxy, but a dynamic interpretation of its tenets. There can be no debate or compromise about its core creed. But its interpretation and application should change from time to time. When it’s frozen at a certain period, it becomes outdated and loses its charm and appeal. And

that is the biggest tragedy of the ummah today. The deviant behaviors are so rampant to make radical groups believe that a revivalist agenda and strict policing are the only way. This distorted rigidity is what has kept the Arab world backward and is also making Muslims in India vulnerable. The rising influence of the Tablighi Jamaat, effectively the flag bearers of Wahhabism in the Indian subcontinent,

is a worrying factor. Liberal Indian Muslims must stand up to join this national jehad of saving the nation from the clutches of orthodoxy! Condemning Osama bin Laden is not enough. We need to fight the mindset that gave birth to bin Laden. Let’s take it upon ourselves the task of ensuring that this radical ideology is not taught and preached in any form in India.

US wants ties with Modi: Pak daily ISLAMABAD: After denying him a visa for years, the US now wants to engage with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Pakistani daily said on July 20, adding Washington wants to re-engage with “Modi’s India”. An editorial in the Dawn said the US-India Strategic Dialogue will resume when Secretary of State John Kerry visits New Delhi later this month. His trip will be followed by a series of cabinet- and sub-cabinet-level visits leading up to the summit between Modi and Barack Obama in September. “A hearing by a subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held this week highlights the fast-changing mood in the US that wants to re-engage with Modi’s India, as well as the renewed thrust for India to play a larger regional role,” it said. Maldives deports 6,400 migrant workers MALE: Maldivian immigration officials deported 6,400 migrant workers in 2014 and are holding another 159 in detention, an official said on July 23. Nepal to generate energy from Bagmati river KATHMANDU: The Nepalese government is gearing up to generate hydropower energy from Bagmati river. Bagmati is considered a holy river by both the Hindus and Buddhists, with a number of Hindu temples located on its banks. The decision was made on July 20 as part of the government’s plan to end the Himalayan nation’s power crisis within three years, Xinhua reported. Nepal’s energy ministry has already announced that all of its available resources would be utilised to maximize the energy generation. Nepal is currently reeling under an eight-hour load shedding daily. The Department of Electricity Development (DoED) has granted a generation licence to a private power developer, Mandu

Hydropower Company, for the Bagmati project. “The company had previously submitted environmental impact assessment and detailed project study report which suggests that it is feasible to generate energy from Bagmati river,” a DoED spokesman said.He said the generation licence was issued for producing 20 MW energy within three years at a cost of around $42.3 million. “The company will start construction within this year after doing its financial closure,” he said.

HOCKENHEIM: Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg extended his lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings with his first win on home soil while both Force India drivers scored points at the German Grand Prix here on July 20. Nico Hulkenberg kept up his record for finishing every 2014 race in the points, and took seventh for Force India, reports E. The final point went to the second Force India of Sergio Perez, after clashes with Daniil Kvyat’s Toro Rosso and Adrian Sutil’s Sauber. Rosberg, who started in pole position, led from start to finish, covering the 67 laps at the 4,574-meter circuit in 1:33:42.914. The Mercedes driver’s average speed was 195.2 kph (121.29 mph). The 29-year-old finished ahead of Finnish Williams driver Valtteri Bottas, who also came in second two weeks ago at Silverstone, and teammate Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari’s Spanish driver Fernando Alonso came in behind German Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel and ahead of Australian Red Bull team member Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg, who won his fourth race of the season and seventh career title, now has 190 points in the standings, while Hamilton is second with 176 points. — IANS

fter surviving a near fatal accident, Formula One star Michael Schumacher is now showing signs of revival. A report has revealed that he is now communicating with his family members by fluttering his eyelashes. He met with a near fatal accident while skiing in the French Alps on December 29 last year. The recovery shown by the F1 legend may allow him to go back home soon but he will still require round-the-clock medical care to recover completely, reported the Mirror. Doctors who are treating him in Switzerland hope Schumacher will be able to sit upright in an

advanced electronic wheelchair in a few weeks. After he is discharged from the medical care facility, Schumacher is likely to occupy a new building in his mansion that has been constructed without stairs, keeping his medical condition in view. Schumacher woke up from a medically induced coma last month after sustaining life-threatening injuries when he smashed his head against rocks while skiing.

ndia will be expecting a lion’s share of medals from shooters, boxers, wrestlers and shuttlers at the 2014 Commonwealth Games which started here on July 23 but it would be difficult to match the record medal haul of 101 in the last edition at home. The Indians are riding high on their historic success at the 2012 London Olympics, where they won a record six medals, including two silver. This time around India have a sizeable contingent of 224 athletes and their main medal hopes will be from shooting, boxers, wrestlers, badminton and hockey. In the last two Games, shooters

PV Sindhu

have won the major chunk of medals for India. They won 27 medals including 16 golds in Melbourne and 30 medals, including 14 gold medals in Delhi in 2010. In badminton, with defending champion Saina Nehwal skipping

the event, India will be pinning their hopes on P.V. Sindhu, Parupalli Kashyap and the pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa. In the last couple of years, Indian wrestlers have also become a force to reckon with ever since Sushil Kumar won his second Olympic medal, and Yogeshwar Dutt the bronze in London. The onus is also on the boxers, especially on the male boxers. The saving grace was M.C. Mary Kom’s bronze medal with the introduction of women’s boxing. In the track and field event, the focus will be on Krishna and fellow discus thrower Vikas Gowda. Last but not the least, the men’s hockey team will be looking to salvage some pride after their disappointing show at the World Cup.

Kangana Ranaut finds paparazzi intimidating NEW DELHI: Actress Kangana Ranaut, who was away from the limelight to pursue her filmmaking course in New York, is back with a bang. However, she finds the paparazzi “intimidating” and is still adjusting to all the attention. As she walked the ramp for designer Anju Modi at the recent Couture Week, she tripped but took it sportingly. She mesmerized the audience with her beautiful smile and looked true diva in Modi’s creation. “I am just back from New York. It was like going back to school. This is my first public outing after coming back from New York. So I took it in a very easy way but it was not. Coming back to paparazzi was intimidating. I couldn’t believe I was back here,” she said after the show. The Queen fame actress, who was wearing a heavily embroidered black lehanga-choli, said she was an avid supporter of Indian wear. “It’s not that I don’t support Indian creation. In fact, I wore a lot of AM:PM (a designer label) during the promotion of Queen. They wanted me to wear Indian clothes,” she told IANS. “However, it’s sad that we are getting lot westernised, the way parties are held, the way we dress up, everything has got westernised. If I go to a party wearing an Indian dress like this, I don’t know how the media would react,” she added. Kangana has created a niche for herself with films like Fashion and Queen and has garnered appreciation for her out-of-the-box choices.

Experiments important for actors: Emraan Hashmi MUMBAI: Actor Emraan Hashmi’s last two experimental films Ek Thi Daayan and Ghanchakkar didn’t go down well with his fans. However, he does not regret doing them. He feels as an actor it is necessary to move away from one’s comfort level. “For any actor, doing experiments is important. I don’t regret the films I have done. If I had it my way, I would still do Ek Thi Daayan and would do a Ghanchakkar, the 35-year-old said during the trailer launch of his upcoming film Raja Natwarlal, where he will be seen as a conman. “It is very important to divert from what you are doing just to stretch your creative skills and when you come back to your traditional path — the path you are known for — then you bring a new color to your performance and characters,” he added. Emraan, who is known for romantic and masala entertainers, chose to go experimental with films like Ek Thi Daayan and Ghanchakkar, that neither struck the right chords among the audiences nor set the cash registers ringing at the box office. However, he says he is back to the genre he is known for with Raja Natwarlal and dedicates the film to his fans. “I think my fans are also bit angry with me as in the last year I have done quite a lot of experiments on screen. So this film is, kind of, dedicated to them,” said the actor who has earlier featured in films like Jannat, Jannat 2 and The Dirty Picture. “It is (like coming back to the basics. It is the Emraan Hashmi they missed over the past year,” he added. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures and directed by Kunal Deshmukh, Raja Natwarlal also features Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Pakistani model-actress Humaima Malick. It will hit the theatres on August 29.

I’m a huge Shahid Kapoor fan: Alia Bhatt MUMBAI: Alia Bhatt, who has confirmed she has signed Vikas Bahl’s Shaandar for a role with Shahid Kapoor, says she’s a fan of the actor, whom she first fell in love with when she was all of 11. “I’m a huge Shahid Kapoor fan. I must have been 11 years old when I went to see Shahid in Ishq Vishk at GaietyGalaxy (in Mumbai). I’ve been a fan since then. He is a fabulous actor and from what I hear, a very supportive co-star,” Alia said. Shahid is a generation removed from most of the co-stars Alia has worked with so far. Gently, she corrects that by saying: “You forget I’ve done Highway with Randeep Hooda. But yes, that apart, I’ve so far worked with actors my own age. So there was a natural comfort level with them. But it’s not like Shahid is any different from Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor or Sidharth Malhotra. He is a very chilled-out guy. He has been around for so many years. I am sure he’s a thorough professional. And I am really looking forward to working with him.” The actress, who was recently seen in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, admits there is plenty on the plate. “I’m very excited. I loved his (Vikas Bahl’s) ‘Queen’. And I am really looking forward to what he does in the film with me,” said the Highway actor.

Katrina has worked extremely hard: Jacqueline MUMBAI: Actress Jacqueline Fernandez, who is busy promoting her much-awaited film Kick has praised her co-star Salman Khan’s former ladylove Katrina Kaif for working hard to be where she’s today. “I feel even if you are doing good work, you still have to work harder...I am sure Katrina is someone who has worked extremely hard and that’s the reason she is one of the leading actresses today,” Jacqueline said. The actress is open to do special dance numbers in films. “If I was asked to do special appearance, I don’t mind. Our movies are considerd to be part of song and dance culture, so if I get an opportunity to perform on a song in a movie, I think it’s nice. I love dancing and music,” said the Sri Lankan beauty.

Complete insanity: Sunny Shraddha to show Leone on career high muscular body MUMBAI: Actor Sunny Leone is juggling between different Bollywood films, dance numbers in the southern movie world and brushing up her Hindi skills. On a career high, the Indo-Canadian talent says she’s here to stay. In an interview, she has spoken about her new projects and about her journey in the Hindi film industry. To a question on the sudden surge of activity, the former porn-star said, “It’s complete insanity, everything that is happening. I am so unbelievably happy about everything that is going on. Happy to be working and happy people are showing so much support.” About her role in the Pritish Nandy production, the actor said her fans would see her in a never seen before avatar. About her next release Tina and Lolo, Sunny said she and her co-star Karishma Tanna shared a nice bonding.

MUMBAI: Actor Shraddha Kapoor, who will be seen in Remo D’Souza’s ABCD 2, says she is working hard to get a muscular body for the film. “I have been working very hard for this film. I have been asked to get a muscular body for ABCD 2 as it’s the demand of the script. So lately, I’ve been on a strict diet and developing muscles,” Shraddha told IANS. To be directed by Remo, ABCD 2 is a sequel to AnyBody Can Dance and it will feature Varun Dhawan with Shraddha in the lead. Meanwhile, the actress also says she is nervous about matching steps with Varun.

Nargis Fakhri’s item number ‘Devil’ out MUMBAI: The much-awaited item number from Salman Khan’s Kick is out for everyone to see. Dancing along with Salman Khan is the sizzling Nargis Fakhri who makes the proceedings hotter with her dance moves. Hit-machine Yo Yo Honey Singh has composed the music for the song. Not just

that, the lyrics for the song are written by Honey Singh along with Jasmine Sandlas. Both of them have also sung the song. ‘Devil- Yaar Na Miley’ is song that has been given a dark, gothic look keeping in mind the theme of the song. It is the first time that Salman Khan has danced to such a number.

After months of training and hardwork, the first look seems promising. “This woman’s a chameleon,” Bollywood film producer Rangita Pritish Nandy tweeted after seeing the poster, which was unveiled online Monday night. Ishq Vishk director Ken Ghosh tweeted: “Is there anything this girl cant pull off? Wow @priyankachopra WOW!”“ For Shreyas Talpade, the intensity on Priyanka’s face and stance in the poster reminded him of his own film Iqbal. “The first look of @priyankachopra’s #MaryKomFirstLook is just outstanding. Congrats team. Reminded me of #IQBAL,” he tweeted. Priyanka’s Gunday coactors Ranveer Singh and Arjun are going gaga, calling her a “Raging Bulbul”.

‘Pizza’: a fear fest with yummy twist Film: “Pizza”; Actors: Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Dipannita Sharma, Arunoday Singh; Director: Akshay Akkineni; Rating: ***1/2

W

hat the devil! Here’s the deal. Normally in films about paranormal experiences, the terror comes from outside. But what if the fear factor is turned on its head? What if the pizza delivery boy, known to be occasionally and potentially dangerous, gets spooked while making a home delivery? It’s an audacious, potentially delectable premise for a horror film. And debutant director Akshay Akkineni delivers. When you gotta go, you gotta go...right? When the devil within summons the poor pizza boy for a bit of footsie in an abandoned bungalow, you know it’s time to get seriously concerned about the health of your spirit. First-time director Akshay Akkineni (his celebrated editor-dad Sreekar Prasad adroitly edits the footage) gives us a horror film that’s also funny and flighty. There’s a comic crust to the cheesy base. That’s a rarity indeed. If you’ve seen the Tamil original, then you know what you’re in for. Pizza is a pacy perky ode to new-

age terror where traditional horror elements such as a woman possessed by an evil force is combined with the theme of the effect of metropolitan quirks such as mindless materialism and commitment phobia, on the mind of the upwardly mobile class. The film has some genuinely scary moments once the pizza boy

(Akshay Oberoi, sincere) gets locked inside the house with ghouls on the prowl. There are insane twists in the terror tale that add up finally to a fairly convincing too-clever-for-its-own-good theme. Though nothing spectacularly shocking happens during the film’s running time, there are enough turns and twists in the tale to keep us alert and involved from behind our 3D glasses. That brings me to the singular unimportance of being threedimensional in our movies. I’m never able to figure out why our films make a spectacle of themselves. Dude, 3D is distracting. However, the chill quotient in Pizza works better with objects flying into your face and bloody hands lunging from nowhere to grab our pizza boy by the throat. But it’s not only such shock shots that make Pizza engaging. It’s that crisp spicy topping of humor where we see our hero being trapped into a house of horrors that his pregnant wife would probably have written about in one of her stories. Yup, Pizza delivers.

SRK to lead star-studded team to wow fans in US, Canada

I

BY A STAFF WRITER

ndian cinema, popularly known around the world as Bollywood, has carved its niche because of its stories and music. Bollywood, over the years, has not just entertained the Indian audiences but has also garnered a lot of love and support from the world audience. Come September, the biggest Bollywood extravaganza of all times–-Slam, The Tour (STT)--will be in the US and Canada to take film buffs by storm. STT is coming with the biggest Bollywood stars and a promise to entertain one and all like never before. One will get a rare opportunity to shake a leg with Shah Rukh Khan (SRK-actor/ producer), Farah Khan Kunder (director/ actor), Deepika Padukone (actor), Malaika Arora Khan (actor), Abhishek Bachchan (actor), Boman Irani (actor), Sonu Sood (actor), Vivaan Shah (actor), Kanika Kapoor (singer) and Yo Yo Honey Singh (singer/actor). Jacqueline Fernandez and Sushmita Sen are also being rumoured to be a part of the huge event.

SRK, who will be performing in the US after 10 years, said that he was blessed “to get a lot of love and support from people around the world”. “This is our way of giving this love back. I am super excited and looking forward to being in your city along with the director and the cast of our next film ‘Happy New Year’ and my colleagues Farah, Deepika, Malaika, Abhishek, Boman, Sonu, Vivaan, Kanika and

Honey Singh”, he said. He went on: “We promise you an evening of love, laughter and entertainment. So mark your calendar and be there at Slam, The Tour,” said SRK. The STT schedule is as follows” September 19--Toyota Center, Houston, Sept 20--Continental Arena, New Jersey, Sept 21-Air Canada Center, Toronto, Sept 26--Sears Center Arena, Chicago, Sept 27--Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), Vancouver and Sept 28--SAP Center, San Jose. Only a couple of days ago, the event was unveiled in America with the names of abovementioned celebrities, pictured in the official promotional material. While it is speculated that the London line-up will be a replica of the America show, organisers are yet to confirm the news. The event is being held to coincide with the release of the cast’s ‘Happy New Year’, which also releases in October. It’s no secret that Shahrukh Khan usually avoids flying in to the US because of the number of times he’s been detained at the airport. But now all that is water under the bridge.

Warm welcome to social crusader Fr Davis Chiramel

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO -- Fr. Davis Chiramel, chairman of the Kidney Federation of India (KFI), was given a warm welcome in the Unites States by people from all walks of life, including representatives of different religious organizations. Fr. Chiramel, a renowned social crusader, started the KFI by donating his own kidney to an economically backward electrician, M. Gopinath, and was appreciated and honored for donating his kidney to a man who belonged to a religion different from his own. In the last five years, his ‘organ donation’ campaign has gained tremendous momentum and spread its wings to the US, the UK and UAE. His message of peace and harmony is rooted in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, a Sanskrit phrase that means the whole world is a single family. In Chicago, Fr. Chiramel was received at the Syro Malabar Cathedral hall by prominent personalities. The Bishop Mar. Jacob Angadiyath honored him by presenting him with a ceremonial golden-threaded shawl

for his efforts and life-changing achievements in India and abroad. The pontiff also praised Fr. Chiramel for his tireless efforts to promote organ donation campaigns and other social service activities in India and abroad. In New York, the National Kidney Foundation honored Fr. Chiramel at a meeting

chaired by its chief executive officer Bruce Skyer. Dr. Terence Thomas from MIMIT, who is a member of the advisory committee for the National Kidney foundation, gave a presentation on the noble work carried out by Fr. Chiramel in India. Mr. Bruce Skyer awarded Fr. Chiramel an honorary membership and extended a special invitation to their next convention in Dallas, Texas. Fr. Chiramel delivered lectures at various events and locations, including, FOKANA, Syro Malabar Cultural event, the Knanaya Convention, the Ecumenical council of Kerala churches of Chicago, and also the Syro Malabar Church in New York. He also paid a visit to the Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago in Homer Glen. There, he was pleasantly received by Swami Ishatmananda followed by a discussion about his work in India. Thomas Chiramel hosted a reception in Oakbrook to honor Fr. Chiramel, and the participants expressed their support to his new awareness campaign named ‘Manishadha” to stop violence in society.

SENIORS’ MEMORABLE PICNIC

HICAGO (IL) -- Members of the Indian Seniors of Chicago( ISC ) attended the annual picnic at Busse Woods Forest Preserve Grove No. 31 on July 12 . At least 155 members participated in the exciting event what with Manilal Patel, Chimanlal Patel, Arvind Kotak and Dilip Patel welcoming everyone and offering them mouthwatering snacks. As everybody gathered for ISC’s regular monthly program, and prayer and Hanuman Chalisa performed, C V Desai presented the June accounts and read out donors’ names. Hema Shastri and Bhupendra Suthar conducted the birthday program. While Suthar gave away birthday greetings cards to those whose birthday fell in July, useful booklets were distributed by Sharad Shah to all members who sang the songs like ‘Bar Bar Ye Din Aaye, Tum Jio Hajare Sal, Happy Birth Day To You’ to shower their blessings. Chiman Patel and Dr. Narsinh Patel thanked

The seniors, including ISC officials, organizers and winners of games, had a great time at the annual picnic.

the donors for their generous donations. Dr. Anant Rawal gave a speech on the festival of ‘Guru Purnima‘. He explained the real meaning of ‘Guru’ and the importance of the Guur in society and the religion. Manav Seva Mandir Board member Jashavant Sheth gave the information about the upcoming program of the Mandir and sought help during Katha and Patotsav and many members instantly offered to lend a helping hand. Hema Shastri informed the members about the tour to Casino in August. After antakshari

and devotional songs, it was the turn of Dr. Rasik Shah to offer ice-cream with the help of Chimanbhai, Lalitbhai and Chandrakant Patel and Bipinbhai. This year also, water melons were served, courtesy Jashvant Sheth. Arvindbhai and Dilip organised four games--Miniature Golf, Bucket Ball, Ring throw and Ball throwing with many members actively participating. Finally, after relishing various food items and enjoying all activities, members abde goodbye to each other and left with a smiling face.

But in September, the 48-year-old superstar is headed to the North America (the US and Canada) with the STT tour aimed exclusively to entertain fans with musical concerts and also promote his coming film, ‘Happy New Year.’ Shahrukh Khan tweeted the poster and the dates of the concerts, “USA & Canada Slammed in SEPT. 19th Houston, 20th New Jersey, 21st Toronto, 26th Chicago, 27th Vancouver, 28th San Jose.” Sources say it is Shahrukh Khan’s genius thata the event is sure to rake in Rs. 200-crore profit even before ‘Happy New Year’ releases! The SLAM tour is seen as a marketing masterstroke by Shahrukh. It’s a great idea that’ll let Happy New Year team kill two birds with single stone. On the one hand, the film ‘Happy New Year’ will get publicity worldwide and on the other, the entire team will make good money doing that. Buzz is that after the American leg of the STT tour, concerts are planned in other countries, too. Happy New Year is among the most eagerly awaited films of 2014. The film will hit theatres in Diwali.

HICAGO, IL -- Devi Sri Prasad (DSP), five-time Filmfare South award winner rock star of South Indian music industry, is all set to take Chicago by storm with his iconic and signature music style. This July, Radiokhushi.com proudly presents the “Rock On” The Beat with DSP US & Canada tour. After thrilling thousands of diehard fans in Atlanta, San Jose and Dallas, DSP’s tour is set to entertain Telugu music lovers of Chicagoland area with a Hollywoodcaliber production, complete with exceptional live orchestra, pyrotechnics and LED Wall. After getting in start as a music producer/composer at a very young age of 17 with the movie “Devi”, DSP went to bag big-banner movies and established his own unique style of simple rhythmic patterns and orchestration which lead to fast-paced, high-energy tunes with catchy hook for which he derives inspiration from South Indian Folk songs and phrases. Apart from music production, he is a highly-sought-after singer as well who sang for music producers and film

makers like A.R Rahman, Mani Sharma, Mani Ratnam and Yuvan Shankar Raja. His rock-star style of performances with upbeat choreography and theatrics, complete with pyrotechnic display, make him the hottest ticket in town. The 2014 ‘Rock On’ DSP Tour is set to take on the US with a support team of Neha Bhasin, Ranina Reddy, Rita Yahan Firouz, Singer Sagar, Singer Malathy and Suraj Santosh and a complete team of live orchestra performers. Ranina Reddy is an Indian playback singer who has many songs to her credit

in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Konkkani for various music composers, including Yuvan Shankar Raja, Harris Jayaraj, Devi sri Prasad, Sai Thaman, Selva Ganesh, Raghu Dixit, and S.A. Rajkumar. Her recent hits include Baadshah, Yevadu, and Iddarammayilatho in Telugu. Neha Bhasin is a super successful singer-song writer, model, dancer, TV hostess and a member of the Indian Pop group “Viva”, much sought-after for her unique vocal range in many Indian languages. She has been one of the singers for music producers looking to add a modern touch with vocals. Her recent hits include Oosaravalli, and Nennokaddine in Telugu. Rita Yahan Firouz, an Iranian-born Israeli pop singer, is an actress who is considered the cultural ambassador between Israel and Iran. She is extremely popular with her many international albums. She is sure to bring an international flair and quality to DSP US & Canada Tour. As for singer Sagar, “Yedo Priya Ragam Vintunna” is the song that catapulted his career into mainstream after getting a start as a chorus singer for his brother (DSP). Soon, he proved to the industry and

masses that he can create his own identity with his Nandi Award win. Sagar is a versatile singer and a popular TV host for the most successful show on MAA TV Super Singer. He has many hits under his belt and is an excellent addition to the Team DSP. Being a Malayali, Suraj Santosh got his start as a playback singer with the song “Inka Edo” for the movie ‘Darling’ and there has been no turning back for this young man. He is a sought-after singer in the Telugu and Tamil movie industries. He is a trained classical musician. His recent hits include songs from the blockbusters “Legend”, “Nennokadine” and upcoming Ra Ra Krishnayya. The fundamental factor that will take this concert to new heights of success is the live orchestra by the talented musicians handpicked by DSP from the South Indian Movie Industry. Utmost importance is placed on the quality of sound and execution of quality performances by the entire team. The program is sure to enthrall the Telugu audience of the Chicagoland area on July 26 at Sears Center Arena at 5333 Prairie Stone Pkwy, Hoffman Estates IL 60192.

Bangalore a rapist’s paradise? Recent spurt in rape cases in this southern city has raises doubt about the safety of women in the IT city; huge public outcry against the latest heinous act involving a six-year-old girl IANS, BANGALORE

R

ustom Kerawalla, chairman of Vibgyor High International School in this tech city, has been arrested in connection with a sixyear-old student’s rape in the school premises by its two staff members over three weeks ago, a top police official said on July 23.

The director himself is blind and he was seen mercilessly caning the children with the help of Srinivasulu, who was holding the students.

amil Nadu Chief Minister J.

Parrikar is ‘parallel PM’, says Goa MLA PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar tried to hold back his smile when a legislator called him a “parallel prime minister” in the Goa assembly on July 22.

In a letter to Modi Jayalalithaa said: “I request your immediate intervention to secure the release of the 43 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and their 55 fishing boats, including the 46 mechanized fishing boats.”

parents demanded arrest of the two teachers accused of sexually assaulting a six-year-old student in a private school here, even as the Karnataka government directed the ICSE board to cancel the school’s recognition. Alcometers outside Goa's bars, pubs soon: Parrikar IANS, CHENNAI

tepping out of a bar, tavern or pub drunk and driving home could soon be an expensive proposition in Goa as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on July 23 promised the stationing of policemen with alco meters outside key alcohol vends. He was responding to a query on accidents from ruling BJP legislator Michael Lobo during question hour during the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly. The chief minister suggested that along with other factors, bars staying open till 4 a.m. also resulted in drunken driving and hence road accidents. "By next assembly session we will get more alco meters," Parrikar said, adding that alco meter-wielding police could also be stationed

Tamil Nadu opposes Sanskrit Week celebration IANS, CHENNAI

P

olitical leaders across party line in Tamil Nadu including Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaaa are now up in arms against the celebration of “Sanskrit week” in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools, terming the move a conspiracy to imposing another lan-

guage. In a statement, MDMK leader Vaiko, taking strong exception to the statement in the CBSE circular that Sanskrit is the mother of all languages said: “It is condemnable that such a poison is being injected in the minds of students in a country that comprises of different languages, culture.” The circular was sent to all CBSE

said: “We have written a letter to the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) board to cancel the recognition it granted to Vibgyor High School, in which a minor student was allegedly sexually assaulted by two of its staff members.” The commissioner also issued a show-cause notice to the school why no objection certificate (NOC) issued to it by the state government should not be withdrawn in light of the horrific crime. In yet another heinous incident, a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a juvenile in a village 30 km from here while her parents were away from home, police said. The incident occurred late on July 18 when the 16-year-old accused sexually assaulted the child, taking advantage of her parents’ absence from home at Thatteguppe village,” said a police official.

outside bars known for late closure once the equipment was procured. The query comes against the backdrop of a road accident in the capital where a drunk girl mowed down two youngsters, injuring them seriously. Goa, one of the most sought after beach tourism destinations in India, has a liberal alcohol regime, both in terms of pricing and availability. The state government's decision to keep bars open till the wee hours of the morning has received criticism from women's rights groups.

Glamour met glitz at ICW 2014 finale Actors Bipasha Basu and Chitrangada Singh spark the ramp in true diva style during the six-day event IANS, NEW DELHI

A

live performance by singer Kamaal Khan on popular Bollywood tracks, décor reflecting the golden period and actors Bipasha Basu and Chitrangada Singh walking the ramp in true diva style, the grand finale by Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers as a part of ‘India Couture Week 2014’ turned out to be a complete Bollywood affair. While Chitrangada started the show in black voluminous Gauri and Nainika gown accessorizing it well with statement neckpiece, Bipasha looked no less than a bride in designer Rohit Bal lehanga and matching jewellery. “Whenever I wear Indian outfit, I make sure of accessorizing it well with jewellery and today I am feeling like a queen. I started my career as a model and it’s great to come back to Delhi again and walk on ramp. It was such a great welcome

that I felt emotional, Bipasha shared after the show. As the actress was looking no less than a bride, it was obvious for her to get bombarded with questions on wedding. Asked that whether she would like to adorn the similar heavy pieces on her wedding day, she said: “I would love to look like a Bengali bride and I don’t mind if I get the chance to wear such beautiful looking pieces. After all, every bride wants to look her best on the most special day of her life.” Chitrangada, on the other hand, took her inspiration from the famous Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe when she walked down the ramp dancing and smiling. The show was mix of jeweleries from the Svara and Sondaraya collection of the title sponsor of the couture week. Pieces inlaid in gold and diamonds embellished

with precious stones such as emeralds, rubies and pearls dominated the range of designs. The Svara collection comprises of gold and polka jewellery embellished in precious stones such as emerald and ruby while Sondaraya was a variable mix of traditional motifs and contemporary styles in diamond jewellery. Also seen walking the ramp was filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and model-actor Muzammil Ibrahim. One of the high point of the show was live singing by Kamaal Khan. Though it was difficult for people sitting in Main Show Area (MSA) to see him but the voice certainly made of them sing with him.

Married and stressed? Keep your eyes safe in sun Have frequent sex IANS, HELSINKI

M

arried but remain stressed owing to work or family-related issues? Have frequent sex to shun those unnecessary bouts of tension and lead a healthy life. In a first such study on married couple in the Philippines, researchers found that married couples should work more to build intimacy in the marriage. “A healthy sex life equates to better psychological health,” D. Liza Espiritu, a clinic operations manager of the PhilhealthCare Inc., was quoted as saying in media reports.

The study, commissioned by the country’s Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO), revealed that married persons are getting less sex compared to the widowed or separated individuals. Called the first “Wellness Index in the Philippines”, the study involved 1,200 respondents aged 21 to 55 years. It noted how a married person only has sex 2.95 times per week while a widowed and separated individual has it 4.33 and 4.38 times a week, respectively. “Widowed or separated people are already liberated in romantic commitments,” Espiritu added.

LONDON: Everyone knows how to protect skin in the sun but what about eyes? Longer, lazy summer days entice everyone to spend more time outdoors, but whether you are spending the day at the beach or just relaxing in the garden, eyecare is needed in every possible way. Not only does the sun make our eyes more prone to infections and UV-related conditions such as Photokeratitis (a painful eye condition - similar to a sunburn of the cornea - caused by exposure to UV light), it can also do permanent damage as UV rays deeply permeate the eye, causing damage to many structures, reports contactmusic.com. Steve Schallhorn, chief medical director at Optical Express, has shared some tips: * Always read the label: Sunglasses that are dark or tinted may look like they will shade your eyes, but only 100 percent UVprotected sunglasses will prevent your eyes from being exposed to harmful UV rays. Overexposure can lead to eye disease, especially for those with light-colored eyes as they are more sensitive to the rays. So, invest in a pair of polarized sunglasses. The lenses in these help reduce harsh glare from reflective surfaces, enabling you to see better during sunny days and further protecting your eyes. * Get some fresh air: Although we’re quick to turn on the air conditioning to cool us down as the mercury rises, this can lead to a syndrome known as ‘dry eye’ as air conditioning units remove all the moisture from the air. Common symptoms are persistent dryness, scratchiness, red eyes and a burning sensation. Avoid this by getting plenty of fresh air and only having the air conditioning on for short bursts of time. * Blink more often: The eye is surrounded by fluid, which protects it by washing away debris and dust every time we blink. Dry air can carry high levels of microscopic allergens which irritate your eyes. If your eyes feel drier than usual, try blinking a few times and make a habit of doing so more frequently. This will allow more moisture into your eyes. — IANS

Probiotics helps control fat in liver

According to an expert, a previously uncharacterized developmental gene may mediate the ageing process IANS, NEW YORK

I

n what could point towards the possibility of one day using therapeutics to combat ageing, researchers have found in animal models that a single gene plays a surprising role in ageing that can be detected early in development. “We believe that a previously uncharacterized developmental gene known as Spns1 may mediate the ageing process,” said Shuji Kishi, an assistant professor at The

Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in the U.S. “Even a partial loss of Spns1 function can speed ageing,” Kishi noted. Using various genetic approaches to disturb Spns1 during the embryonic or larval stages of zebrafish, the scientists were able to produce some models with a shortened life span that lived long lives. While most studies of “senescence” — declines in a cell’s power of division and growth —have focused on later stages of life, the study is intriguing in exploring this phenomenon in early stages.

Healthy lifestyle key to fight mental decline, finds a study HelsinkiL Finnish researchers have suggested that a healthy lifestyle helps in fighting mental decline, with exercise and diet holding significant potential against Alzheimer’s disease. The study, led by Miia Kivipelto from the

Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, has shown exercise and diet have a major impact on the risk of an individual suffering from Alzheimer’s disease at later stage of his life, Good News from Finland reported. The study trial — the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER Study)— involved 1,260 adults. Those recruited for the study aged between 60 and 77, and were facing a risk of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The subjects were divided into two groups. One group was offered standard care while the other group was asked to undergo lifestyle and diet changes.

“Mutations to Spns1 disturbs developmental senescence and badly affects the long-term biochronological ageing process,” Kishi said. The new study shows that Spns1, in conjunction with another pair of tumour suppressor genes, beclin 1 and p53 can, influences developmental senescence through two differential mechanisms: the

Spns1 defect was enhanced by Beclin 1 but suppressed by ‘basal’ p53. In addition to affecting senescence, Spns1 impedes autophagy, the process whereby cells remove unwanted or destructive proteins and balance energy needs during various life stages. The study appeared in the journal PLOS Genetics.

High salt ups heart disease risk in diabetics IANS, HELSINKI

P

eople with Type-2 diabetes have more to add to their list of dietary restrictions as researchers have found that a high salt diet may double their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. “The findings provide clear scientific evidence supporting lowsodium diets to reduce the rate of heart disease among people with diabetes,” said Chika Horikawa from University of Niigata Prefecture in Niigata, Japan. The study surveyed participants aged 40-70 who had been diagnosed with diabetes. In all, 1,588 people responded to a survey about their diets, including sodium intake. The researchers reviewed data on cardiovascular complications participants experienced over the

course of eight years. People who ate an average of 5.9 grams of sodium daily had double the risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those who ate, on average, 2.8 grams of sodium daily. The effects of a high-sodium

LONDON: For people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, eating probiotics can help diminish the accumulation of fat in the liver. In lab experiments performed on rats, scientists demonstrated that administration of probiotics diminishes the accumulation of fat in the liver of obese rats. University of G r a n a d a researchers worked with three probiotic strains: Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium breve and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The strains were administered for 30 days in the diet of obese rats. The probiotics led to an accumulation of lipids in the liver which was lower than that occurring in rats fed with a placebo. — IANS
