P
resident Donald Trump visited the two states most heavily affected by Hurricane Florence and promised that “a lot of money” will be coming from Washington and significant resources will be invested in reconstruction in the region, although he also sparked controversy by expressing interest in an area where he owns a golf course. Trump traveled to North and South Carolina, which were deluged last week by a storm that killed at least 36 people in the region, forced the evacuation of thousands and caused economic damage valued at up to $60 billion, according to preliminary estimates, Efe reported this week. “To the families who have lost loved ones, America grieves with you, and our hearts break for you. God bless you,” the president said in a statement. “We will never forget your loss. We will never leave your side. We’re with you all way. And to all those impacted by this terrible
storm, our entire American family is with you and ready to help. And you will recover,” he added. The president, who last year visited Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico after the passage of several hurricanes, repeated several activities that he had undertaken there, distributing hot dogs and other

During one stop in the coastal town of New Bern, North Carolina, where heavy flooding damaged more than 4,300 homes, Trump was surprised to see a yacht that had been washed against the back porch of a home. “Is this your boat?” the president asked the homeowner, and when the owner said no, Trump reportedly smiled and replied, “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal.” Although the president avoided
IN BRIEF
Trump’s former NSA to be sentenced WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will be sentenced on December 18, one year after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, according to court filing. The move by US District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan came on Wednesday, a day after Mueller’s team signalled that it was ready for Flynn to be sentenced
after previously asking for delays, prompting speculation that the former top aide was still cooperating with the probe, Politico reported. The date falls several weeks after the November 6 mid-term elections. Flynn has been cooperating with the Mueller probe after pleading guilty to a charge of making two false statements to the FBI about his interactions with then Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
US military base in Poland ‘soon’ WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said that he is “very seriously” considering the idea of establishing a permanent military base in Poland, adding upon welcoming Polish President Andrzej Duda to the White House that Warsaw would be ready to pay “more than $2 billion” to ensure that a US troop contingent was stationed at the base. “He would pay the United States, meaning Poland would be paying bil-
mistakes such as he made last year in Puerto Rico, where he downplayed the tragedy and said that Hurricane Maria had not been a “real catastrophe,” he did spark some criticism by taking advantage of his trip to visit Navy installations in North Carolina to ask about the condition of
lions of dollars for a base,” Trump said at the White House. “We’re looking at that more and more from the standpoint of defending really wealthy countries,” Efe reported. “President (Duda) offered us much more than $2 billion,” the US leader added, going on to say that “The security of Poland is very important to me, and it’s very important to our country.” — IANS
Lake Norman. “I love that area. I can’t tell you why, but I love that area,” said Trump, avoiding mentioning that one of his golf courses, Trump National Golf Club, is located on the shore of Lake Norman, near Charlotte. Trump also had a sober warning for South Carolina, whose authorities still fear significant additional damage due to flooding caused by Florence.
Trump slaps tariffs, Beijing hits back GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING/WASHINGTON
T
he trade war between the US and China got uglier this week as Beijing slapped tariffs on American goods worth $60 billion in retaliation to the additional taxes of $200 billion on Chinese goods by Washington. According to the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, the tit-for-tat tariff will come into effect on September 24 when US tariffs also kick in. The tariff rates will be levied at 5 and 10 percent, instead of the previously proposed rates of 5, 10, 20 and 25 percent, the state media quoted an official statement as saying. The two largest economies of the world have already levied taxes worth $50 billion on each other’s goods. On the other hand, the Trump administration on Monday said that duties on Chinese imports would rise to 25 per cent on January 1, 2019. These will apply to

almost 6,000 items, marking the biggest round of US tariffs so far, the New York Times reported. Earlier, the list slated for tariffs originally included more than 6,000 items, but US officials later removed about 300 types of items, including smart watches, bicycle helmets, play pens, high chairs and baby car seats. Trump said the latest round of tariffs was in response to China’s “unfair trade practices”.
Trump showed no sign of backing down from the type of fullblown trade war between the world’s two largest economies that rattled financial markets, saying he was prepared to “immediately” place tariffs on another $267 billion worth of imports in case of China taking any retaliatory measures. He also warned Beijing against seeking to influence the upcoming US mid-term elections.

India-Pak: Diplomacy back on track Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking resumption of dialogue between the two countries IANS, NEW DELHI

reaking the ice in ties, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will meet her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session that begins later this month — the first such high-level interaction between the neighbors after three years. “I can confirm that on the request from the Pakistani side a meeting between the two foreign ministers will take place on the sidelines of the UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time. “We have just agreed to the meeting. Defense Minister must go for ‘misleading’ on Rafale: Congress NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday demanded Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s resignation accusing her of “misleading” the country after former HAL chief T.S. Raju refuted her claim that the defense undertaking did not have the capability to build Rafale fighter jets. Leading the charge, Congress President Rahul Gandhi earlier in the day tweeted: “The RM (Rafale Minister) tasked with defending corruption has been caught lying again. “The former HAL chief, T.S. Raju, has nailed her lie that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited didn’t have the capability to build the Rafale. Her position is untenable and she must resign.”
30 air passengers suffer bleeding MUMBAI: At least 30 passengers of a Jet Airways suffered ear and nose bleeding due to low cabin pressure early on Thursday during the aircraft’s ascent here, following which the government ordered a safety audit plan for airlines, officials said. Jet Airways later said it has derostered the cockpit crew concerned, who will remain off duties pending investigation. The Mumbai-Jaipur flight 9W-697 was carrying 166 persons and five crew on board. The flight was forced to return after passengers complained pain in the ears. —IANS
Subsequently former Union Minister Manish Tewari citing Raju’s assertions made to a national daily, reiterated the demand for the Defense MinisNirmala Sitharaman ter’s resignation. He said the Modi government’s “web of lies” surrounding the controversial defense deal has been demolished. logue and suggesting a meeting between the two foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UNGA, and a letter written by Qureshi to Sushma Swaraj. When pressed further, Kumar said this is just a meeting and there is nothing much to be read into this at this stage. Kumar also revealed that India has confirmed that it would attend a meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) foreign ministers. “The existing policy on the Saarc process will continue. I don’t think there is any change in it,” said the MEA spokesperson. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had met the then Pakistan’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in Islamabad in 2015 and two decided to resume the
comprehensive dialogue process. This was followed by an unscheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lahore on the Christmas Day. But the bilateral ties took a severe beating after the terror attack on the Pathankot airbase on January 2, 2016. Asked whether the foreign ministers meeting in New York is the beginning of a dialogue process, he merely repeated that they requested for a meeting and we have not discussed details. On reports of brutality on a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan who was killed in firing from the Pakistani side, he said it was a barbaric incident and the BSF has written a strong communication to its counterparts in Pakistan. “It is a serious issue and we will take it up Pakistan.”
Modi government approves ordinance on triple talaq IANS, NEW DELHI
A
head of Assembly elections in five states, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an ordinance making triple talaq a criminal offense, with the government stating that there was a “compelling necessity” and “overpowering urgency” to do so. The ordinance, which will be sent to the President for approval, comes against the backdrop of the government’s inability to get a bill on the issue passed in the last monsoon session of Parliament. The government then brought some changes in the original bill providing for only the women or
their blood relations to file complaints against the erring husbands in a bid to get support from the Congress and other parties in the Rajya Sabha but did not succeeded in passing it. Briefing reporters after a meeting of the union cabinet on why it was resorting to an ordinance, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that instances of instant triple talaq have “continued unabated” in spite of the Supreme Court declaring it unconstitutional and Lok Sabha passing a bill that is now pending in the Rajya Sabha. He attacked the Congress and said it had not supported the bill in the Rajya Sabha due to “vote bank

politics”. Prasad said the issue pertained to respect for women and not to religion or path of worship. “The issue of triple talaq has nothing to do with faith, mode of worship. It is pure issue of gender justice and gender equality.” “Women are being oppressed... Most instances are taking place in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
RSS chief favors early construction of Ram temple IANS, NEW DELHI
A
rticulating his position on a range of raging issues, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday favored construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya “at the earliest” and uniform civil code and population control, lauded the work of Modi government but also disapproved politics of “shamshankabristan” and saffron terror in election campaigns. Bhagwat, who took questions from the audience on the last day of his three-day lecture series “Future of Bharat: An RSS perspective”, spoke against religious

conversions under allurement and minoritism and said there should be no “double standards” over violence in the name of cow.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said, does not approve the word “minorities” as it considers all to be equal citizens.
This description was not in use before Independence, he added. Bhagawat spoke for continuation of reservation, pitched for a firm population policy that covers those with big families and favored a new education policy that combines modernity with traditional values. He backed a uniform civil code, abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and Article 35A in Jammu and Kashmir. He said Ram Mandir should be built “at the earliest” in Ayodhya which would remove a major cause of discord of between Hindus and Muslims.

Is Amit Shah whistling in the dark?
The boast about BJP ruling for 50 years may have been in keeping with his usual aggressive, bombastic style AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
B
haratiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah’s boast at the national executive meeting about the party ruling for 50 years may have been in keeping with his usual aggressive, bombastic style, but it has been interpreted in two contradictory ways. One was to see it as a sign of arrogance and the other was to discern in the seeming extravagant claim a hint of whistling in the dark to keep up the party morale. Both the surmises have an element of plausibility. If the assertion underlines hauteur, the reason undoubtedly is the BJP’s belief that it faces no serious challenge at the moment. Notwithstanding the continuing unemployment, agrarian distress, high fuel prices, falling rupee, stagnant exports and the unease
among the minorities and Dalits, the opposition has not been able to get its act together. Because of this failure, there are now doubts about how it will fare in the forthcoming assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh since the BJP’s main opponent in these states, the Congress, which was earlier expected to have an easy
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah (Photo: IANS)
Notwithstanding the continuing unemployment, high fuel prices, falling rupee and the unease among the minorities and Dalits, the opposition has not been able to get its act together run, has been unable to reach an understanding with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and is troubled by its familiar internal squabbling. Besides, the question as to who will be the opposition’s prime ministerial face is yet to be settled while there has been no clearcut
articulation of an economic blueprint. The BJP, on the other hand, is pursuing a well-defined path. Even as “vikas” (development) remains its catchphrase, it also cannily indulges in the ruses of what a dissident saffron intellectual and former BJP minister, Arun
Shourie, has called a “one-trick pony”. The “trick”, according to him, is to foment divisiveness which has been highlighted by the communal uncertainties posed by the National Register of Citizens, which the Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, wants to be extended from his state to the entire country so that the “ghuspetiyas” (infiltrators or illegal immigrants) can be summarily evicted. “Chun chun ke nikaloonga”, as Amit Shah has thundered.
The BJP’s confidence apparently stems from the belief that while the promise of development will keep the youth and the middle class on its side — as has been confirmed by the Delhi University Students Union election results where the BJP’s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), won three of the top four seats — the party’s nationalist plank targeting “ghuspetiyas” and the so-called urban Naxalites will keep the opposition off balance.
Kashmir in its pristine glory as autumn arrives Countryside has suddenly come to life as men and women reap the grain-laden paddy crop. Thanks to timely rains and a comparatively hotter summer, this year’s paddy yield is expected to be rich SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR
A
s turtle doves and pigeons compete with each other to the accompaniment of cicada’s flattering music to pick the fallen grain left behind in paddy fields after harvesting, the message is loud and clear — autumn, Kashmir’s golden brown season of plenty, has arrived. Notwithstanding the sporadic incidents of violence, one can never have enough of Kashmir at this time. Film units from Bollywood and south India have started arriving here to capture the glory of the picture-postcard season. The unmistakable nip in the mornings and the evenings, the ripening of apples, walnuts, grapes, rice and maize are all indications that the farmers and the orchardists must make hay while the sun shines over meadows, mountains peaks and the plains of Kashmir.

Nomadic goatherds called Bakerwals are hurrying with their flocks of sheep and goats down to warmer pastures in the Jammu region. The passage of these hardy souls carrying back children, tents, household goods and other
equipment they needed during their stay in the alpine pastures of the Valley is a saga of human endeavour and hardship. Countryside has suddenly come to life as men and women reap the grain-laden paddy crop. Thanks
to timely rains and a comparatively hotter summer, this year’s paddy yield is expected to be rich. This, despite the fact that the state agriculture department had issued advisories for restraining paddy sowing to only well-irrigat-
ed areas as experts feared less than average rainfall during the summer months. Truckloads of apples of different varieties are these days despatched to markets outside the state. The rates of different varieties of apple are better than last year in markets outside the Valley. This has encouraged the local orchardists who are taking extra caution to ensure that only the best quality apples are sent to outside markets. Kashmiri apple is facing fierce competition from Himachal Pradesh where good quality apples are now grown and marketed. The glistening waters of local streams, rivers and lakes are soothing as plenty of fish, both local and exotic species, abound. Flocks of swans and ducks floating majestically on the waters of the Dal, Mansbal and the Wullar lake are a pageant of plume and cackle.

N.Korea summit sparks hope North Korea is willing to dismantle more nuclear facilities in exchange for the US promise to implement what was agreed at the summit in Singapore in June
Historic trip to sacred N.Korean mountain PYONGYANG: South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un embarked on a historic trip on Thursday to the summit of Mount Paekdu, a sacred mountain on the country’s border with China, at the end of their three-day bilateral summit. Kim and Moon, together with the respective first ladies Ri Sol-ju and Kim Jong-sook, took off in their presidential jets from Sunan airport in Pyongyang and landed about an hour later at the Samjiyon airfield the mountain, reports Efe news. A vehicle then took the two leaders to the foothills of the mountain, an inactive volcano, and they are expected to reach Chonji, the famous crater considered the greatest national symbol in both the North and South of the Korean peninsula. The highest mountain on the peninsula, Mount Paekdu is believed to be the place where the Korean people were born, according to traditional folklore. Very few South Koreans have managed to climb the crater from the South Slope, located in North Korea, due to the prolonged conflicts between the two countries. —IANS

N
orth Korean leader Kim Jong-un has agreed to shut down one of his main missile testing and launch sites, said South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday. Kim agreed to take additional steps for denuclearization, in an apparent gesture to restart the stalled talks with the US, Yonhap news agency reported. The agreement came in a historic summit between Kim and Moon held at the state guesthouse Paekhwawon here. The two leaders “agreed on a way to achieve denuclearization” said Moon, the BBC reported. The agreement was described by
Kim as a “leap forward” towards military peace on the Korean Peninsula. He also hoped to “visit Seoul in the near future”. He would be then the first North Korean leader to do so. “The North has agreed to permanently shut down its Dongchang-ri missile engine testing facility and missile launch pad under the participation of experts from related countries,” Moon said in a joint press conference with Kim after the summit, broadcast live in Seoul. The North also agreed to take additional steps, such as the permanent shutdown of the Yongbyon nuclear facility, depending on the US’ corresponding measures, he added. “The South and the North dis-
WASHINGTON: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday set a deadline by which North Korea must denuclearize, saying that the process must be completed by January 2021, when President Donald Trump’s current term would end. In a statement, Pompeo also expressed his desire to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Ri Yong-ho, next week in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, Efe reported. “This morning, I invited my counterpart Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho to meet in New York City next week where we are both already scheduled to be in attendance at the United Nations General Assembly meeting,” said Pompeo in his statement. “This will mark the beginning of negotiations to transform US-North Korea relations through the process of rapid denuclearization of North Korea, to be completed by January
2021, as committed by Chairman Kim,” he added. Pompeo made reference to the June 2018 Singapore summit at which Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a declaration opening the door to denuclearization by Pyongyang in exchange for US guarantees regarding that regime’s survival, although concrete time periods for achieving those objectives were not set forth. In recent weeks, the bilateral dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang has stalled due to differences on how to move the denuclearization process forward. North Korea has demanded progress on signing a peace treaty with South Korea that would put an end to the technical state of war on the Korean Peninsula in exchange for taking concrete steps to dismantle its nuclear arsenal, as demanded by the White House. —IANS
cussed denuclearization steps for the first time,” Moon added. One of the main objectives of this summit was to get North Korea and the US to resume their stagnant dialogue on denuclearization which was initiated in June. Moon’s mediation and Kim’s
commitment at the summit have so far satisfied Washington, as US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the result of the inter-Korean meeting. Moon will meet Trump on September 24 in the US to discuss the summit in detail.
Israel violates Syrian Pakistan court orders release of Sharif sovereignty: Putin IANS, ISLAMABAD
MOSCOW: Operations of the Israeli air force are undertaken in violation of Syria’s sovereignty, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Tuesday. Putin made the remarks after the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier in the day its Il-20 surveillance plane with 15 servicemen on board was mistakenly downed by a Syrian missile on Monday night due to a simultaneous Israeli air strike that confused Syria’s air defense system, Xinhua news agency reported. In this case, the Russian-Israeli agreements on the prevention of dangerous incidents in Syria were not observed, Putin said at the phone conversation, according to a Kremlin press release. Putin urged the Israeli side to prevent such situations from now on. According to the Kremlin,

he Islamabad High Court on Wednesday ordered the release of jailed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and sonin-law Muhammad Safdar, providing them huge relief and prompting celebrations among supporters. Sharif, Maryam and Safdar had been sentenced in July to 10 years, seven years and one year respectively for corruption on charges of owning four upmarket flats in London. They were convicted after they failed to prove the source of assets used to purchase the properties. The ruling was delivered by Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb on petitions filed by the three, Geo News reported. The court granted bail to the three and ordered them to pay Rs 500,000 as surety bonds. The sentences of the three-time Premier, his daughter and son-in-law will remain

suspended till the final adjudication of the appeals filed by them. “We accept the petitioners’ pleas seeking a suspension in their sentences,” Justice Minallah said, adding that the National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog, was unable to prove a financial link between Sharif and the apartments in question. The verdict sparked wild celebrations among Sharifs’ supporters
outside the courtroom. Former Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, a staunch Sharif ally, termed the judgment a “victory for justice” while congratulating the former Prime Minister, who lost his wife to cancer last week. Calling the court’s decision “a triumph of justice”, PML-N party leader Ahsan Iqbal said: “The trial was not according to the law. It was revenge.”

EVM controversy enters court The Bombay High Court orders issue of notices to the Election Commission, Maharashtra State Election Commission (M-SEC) and EVM makers in a public interest litigation (PIL) QUAID NAJMI, MUMBAI
I
n a significant development, the Bombay High Court this week ordered issue of notices to the Election Commission, Maharashtra State Election Commission (M-SEC) and two public sector makers of electronic voting machines (EVM) and others in a public interest litigation filed by an RTI activist. The directions were given by Justice S.S. Kemkar and Justice S.V. Kotwal when the PIL filed by activist Manoranjan S. Roy came up for admission. Others being served notices are the Union Home Ministry, IT Department and the Maharashtra government. The two EVM manufacturers are Electronics Corp of India Ltd. and Bharat Electronics Ltd. The court directed the Additional Solicitor-General of India and state Advocate-General to appear at the next hearing, likely on October 3, said Roy’s lawyers, counsel S.P. Chaudhari, P. Pawar and Santosh Saroj, instructed by Pawar & Company. In March 2018, Pawar & Company had filed Roy’s PIL, seeking detailed investigations into the delivery of EVMs and a ban on deploying EVMs/VVPATs till the outcome of the probe. The petitioner, among other things, had highlighted the manner in which a large number of
NIA to produce IS sympathizer in Kerala court NEW DELHI: The NIA said to produce Nashidul Hamzafar, an alleged Islamic State (IS) sympathizer who was deported from Afghanistan to India this week, in a Kerala court later on September 20, an official said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said to seek Hamzafar’s custody for questioning, the official said. Hamzafar was arrested by the NIA after his deportation and produced in a Delhi court on Wednesday. According to the NIA official, the alleged IS sympathizer had travelled to Afghanistan along with 21 others to join the terror organization. He was arrested by the counterterror probe agency after he landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here from Kabul after his deportation. In 2017, Hamzafar was detained by the Afghan security agencies for illegally entering the —IANS country to join the IS.
The Election Commission of India (ECI). (File Photo: IANS)
EVMs and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) were being ordered by the EC and various SECs and that there were huge contradictions in the figures of orders and supplies made by the two manufacturers. In recent RTI queries raised by Roy, it had been revealed how the Bengaluru-based BEL had despatched large quantities of electronic voting machines by ‘handdelivery’ and ‘by post’ to various unidentified recipients. BEL said it had despatched 820 balloting units (BUs) of the machines in bulk packaging, and
on two occasions in April (2017) it sent 245 (VVPAT) machines ‘By Hand’, to certain recipients and destinations, according to the RTI replies given to Roy. Roy told IANS that on both the occasions, BEL did not state to whom the consignments of BUs were ‘posted’ or from where the entire lot of the ‘hand-delivered’ VVPATs originated and whether they were received safely by the intended recipients. Roy said that for the entire lot of 820 BUs sent through India Post, there are only nine Docket Nos. assigned for the total consignment,
which comprises two boxes with 50 BUs each and one box each with 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110 and 210 BUs. “This is misleading as each box has a specific size depending on the dimensions of the BUs. The BEL’s reply shows the entire consignment was posted in only nine boxes, though the Indian Posts does not accept — nor is equipped to handle — such huge parcels,” Roy said. BEL said on April 6 and April 10, 2017 that it delivered VVPATs in three parcels — 65, 70 and 110 respectively — ‘By Hand’ and
‘urgent delivery’ to avoid the regular logistics route. As the country prepares for the 2019 general elections, several instances of “indiscriminate” orders and deliveries of EVMs have emerged in RTI responses, Roy said. Between 1989-1990 and 2015-2016, BEL supplied 125,149 EVMs to Karnataka, 169,975 to Bihar, 159,900 to Uttar Pradesh, 140,500 to Tamil Nadu, 87,325 to Andhra Pradesh, 50,850 to Gujarat, 50,050 to Rajasthan, 23,000 to Jharkhand, 10,000 to Delhi, 3,000 to Manipur and 2,000 to Sikkim. Inexplicably, BEL also supplied 500 EVMs to Chandigarh, which is the only city to get its own machines. Elsewhere, the EVMs go to the respective states from where they are distributed. Roy demanded that BEL — and the Election Commission — must explain why Chandigarh got this treatment. According to information received by Roy, in 2013-14, BEL supplied the highest number of VVPATs — 2,455 — to Karnataka, followed by 2,275 to Bihar, 2,140 to Gujarat, 1,500 to Mizoram, 1,475 to Tamil Nadu, 130 to Delhi and 25 to EC. The other EVM supplier, Electronics Corp of India Ltd. (ECIL), Hyderabad, said in response to RTI queries that in 2014-15 it had supplied 10,000 VVPATs to the Commission (EC).
Nun rape: Bishop questioning on IANS, TRIPUNITHURA (KERALA)
The Vatican relieved Mulakkal of his pastoral duties and appointed Bishop Emeritus of the archdiocese of Bombay Agnelo Rufino Gracias as the apostolic administrator of the Jalandhar diocese
J
alandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who allegedly raped a nun multiple times between 2014 and 2016, was on Thursday temporarily relieved of his pastoral duties, the Catholic Church said. The Vatican relieved Franco Mulakkal of his pastoral duties and appointed Bishop Emeritus of the archdiocese of Bombay Agnelo Rufino Gracias as the apostolic administrator of the Jalandhar diocese with immediate effect, said Catholic Bishop Conference of India president, Cardinal Oswald Gracias in a statement. The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, Punjab, was questioned for seven hours near at the Crime Branch office on September 19. Nuns have been protesting in Kochi for 13 days. The bishop spent the night at a plush hotel in Kochi.

He dodged a large media contingent waiting outside the hotel as he slipped away in a different car while the vehicle used on September 19
was kept parked outside the hotel. Inspector General Vijay Sakhre, Kottayam Superintendent Harishankar and his deputy K. Subhash
held a meeting at the IG office in Kochi ahead of the interrogation. The Kerala High Court has already agreed to hear Mulakkal’s anticipatory bail plea on September 25. A Kerala nun has accused Mulakkal of repeatedly sexually abusing her between 2014 and 2016. An FIR was registered against the bishop.

Americans don’t trust Trump: Pramila Jayapal ‘You see people recognizing they don’t trust the President,’ says the Indian-American Congressman IANS, WASHINGTON
A
mericans are recognizing that they don’t trust the US President who has maintained that he knew nothing about what was went on in his campaign, Indian-American Congressman Pramila Jayapal has said. Her comments came after Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges last week. He also agreed to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigations about the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. “You see people recognizing they don’t trust the President. They believe that Bob Mueller is doing a
good job and that the investigation should continue. People are saying, look, this is outrageous,” the first Indian-American woman elected to the US House of Representatives told CNN last week. “This level of corruption, greed, some of the individual charges that are outlined in the Manafort, charging document really show that this guy (Manafort)... is in jail because of jury tampering. “When you think about this, it isn’t just the individual pieces that we’re seeing, but what we’re seeing is top advisers, people who ran the campaign, the campaign manager, the deputy campaign manager, the President’s personal lawyer who have all pleaded guilty. “... And you have to begin to wonder how it could possibly be
the case that the President knew nothing about what was going on,” asked Jayapal. She praised Muller for doing a “great investigation”. “I think Bob Muller has been doing a great investigation. I think he was just handed the keys to the castle, not just with Manafort but also with Michael Cohen.” In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to violating election laws and said he had been directed to do so by the President. He had also admitted paying hush money to two women to keep them from talking about their affairs with Trump during the presidential campaign. “They (people) see the chaos of the last 18 months. They don’t want it. They don’t like shattering

of norms. What does a person who has the biggest bully pulpit of the White House do? They don’t like the tweets that come from the President, contesting what hap-
pened in (Hurricane) Maria,” Jayapal said. She said that people want Trump to be focussed and to be presidential, but “he is none of those things”.
Hate crime: Indian-origin family 2019 Indian diaspora conclave to be bigger targeted in UK arson attack IANS, NEW DELHI
LONDON: An Indian-origin family was forced to flee their home in the UK after it was targeted in an arson attack which the police on Wednesday treated as a “hate crime”. World Hindu Congress: From paeans to religious unity ASHOK EASWARAN, CHICAGO
A
t its best, speeches at the recently concluded World Hindu Congress echoed the soaring spiritual ideals evoked by Swami Vivekananda in Chicago 125 years ago. Even Mohan Bhagwat, Sarsangchanalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), focused essentially on the need for unity and patience among Hindus while fighting obstacles, of which, he said, there would be many. The burden of excavating implied accusations in Bhagwat’s speech fell to his critics. At the plenary session, the moderator requested speakers to address issues of conflict without naming the speakers or their orga-

nizations in the interest of harmony. Other speakers sought to unite the followers of all the great reli-
gions that took birth in India — Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Some of the speakers from Bhagwat to Swami Swaroopananda of the Chinmaya Mission, framed the issues before Hinduism in a moral paradigm. Ashwin Adhin, the Vice President of the Republic of Suriname, began his speech in chaste Hindi, later quoting cognitive scientist George Lakoff: “Facts matter immensely. But to be meaningful they have to be framed in terms of their moral importance.” The dissonances, between the spiritual and the mundane, were to emerge later on the fringes of the seminars which were part of the Congress. Many of the delegates appropriated to themselves the mantle of a culture besieged by proselytizing faiths. There were speakers who urged Hindus to
have more children to combat their ‘dwindling population’. Posters warned Hindus of the dangers from ‘love jihad’ (Muslim men ‘enticing’ Hindu women). In one of the sessions on the media, filmmaker Amit Khanna noted that religion had always played a prominent part in Indian cinema, starting with the earliest mythologicals. “Raja Harishchandra”, the first silent film, he said, was made by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. He sought to reassure the audience on the future of Hinduism. “Over 80 percent of Indians are Hindus,” he said adding: “Hinduism has survived many upheavals for thousands of years. Hinduism has never been endangered.”

Yes, the same story that Sanjay Leela Bhansali made into Huma Dil Chuke Sanam about a marriage of inconvenience where the kind patient husband desists from consummating the marriage until the wife comes out of her earlier relationship. Imagine if the wife can’t come out of her stuporous obsession with her first love because, hell, the sex with Vicky(Kaushal) is toooooo good. strong bowling performance followed by some power-packed batting saw India thrash arch rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in their Group A clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament this week. Asked to field first, three-wicket hauls from pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and part-time off-spinner Kedar Jadhav enabled India to restrict Pakistan to a paltry 162. Bhuvneshwar returned figures of 3/15 while Jadhav got 3/23. Indian girls beat Pakistan in AFC U-16 qualifier ULAANBAATAR (MONGOLIA): The India U-16 girls football team beat arch-rivals Pakistan 4-0 in the ongoing AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Qualifier at the MFF Stadium this week. While Avika Singh (22nd minute) opened the scoring for India, the Pakistani goalie Ayesha (43rd) conceded an own goal at the stroke of half-time. Sunita Munda (82nd) added another to get herself on the scoresheet, whereas skipper Shilky Devi (88th) wrapped it up in style. Following the win, India are firmly seated at the top of Group B, having collected six points from two matches. Sunita, Shilky and Avika combined well to wreak havoc on the arch-rivals but the Pakistani defenders soaked in the pressure until the 22nd minute when Avika notched the opening goal for India. Sunita breezed past the leftback to deliver a low cross for Avika, whose well-timed tap-in earned India the lead. Pakistan were happy to sit back in their own half and defend. Late-night use of gadgets leaves kids sleep-deprived: Study IANS, NEW YORK
M
ost parents believe that an excessive late night use of gadgets has significantly hampered the sleep patterns of their teenaged children, leading to poor academic performance, researchers warn. According to them, 56 percent of parents fall in this category. In the study, published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan, 43 percent of parents said their teenage children are struggling to fall asleep or wake up. “The poll suggests that sleep

problems are common among teenagers and parents believe latenight use of electronics are a main
contributor,” said Sarah Clark, poll co-director at M.P.H. For the study, the researchers
included responses from 1,018 parents with at least one child who are aged between 13-18 years of age. Teenagers’ hectic schedules and homework load — as well as anxiety about school performance and peer relationships — are also seen by parents as contributing to sleep problems. Some parents also reported that their child experienced occasional sleep problems (one to two nights per week) while 18 percent believe their teenage kids struggle with sleep three or more nights per week. In addition, 10 percent of parents believe their teenage kids’ sleep problems are associated with their health conditions or medication.
“Other reasons of sleep disturbances included irregular sleep patterns due to homework or activities which accounted for 43 percent, worries about school (31 percent) and concerns about social life (23 per cent), the study noted. The parents have encouraged their children to try different strategies at home to help them cope up with sleep problems, including limiting caffeine in the evening (54 percent), turning off electronics and cell phones at bedtime (53 percent), having a snack before bed (44 percent) and natural or herbal remedies, such as melatonin (36 percent).

‘Game of Thrones’
wins big at Emmy Awards Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel won the top prizes at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California
IANS, LOS ANGELES
T
he Game of Thrones had the biggest haul, with nine awards, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. It also won the best drama Emmy for the third time in the past four years. For Netflix, the 2018 Emmys represented a triumph. But the result came as a relief to HBO, which can now say that it has technically finished in first place among all broadcast and cable networks for 17 years running, reports nytimes.com. The rest of HBO’s awards were spread among several shows in acting categories, including wins for Henry Winkler (Barry), Bill Hader (Barry), Thandie Newton (Westworld) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). In his acceptance speech at the ceremony this week, Dinklage
called out the show’s creators, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, saying: “Thank you Dave and Dan for changing my life. I cannot walk down the street anymore.” The spy drama The Americans won two awards, including best actor in a drama for Matthew Rhys. Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, won for best lead actress in a drama. Lorne Michaels, the 73year-old behind Saturday Night Live, not only left the Microsoft Theatre with the Emmy for best variety sketch series, he also produced the broadcast for NBC. NBC hoped that the hosts, Colin Jost and Michael Che, the anchors of Weekend Update on S.N.L., would help reverse a trend of plummeting awards show rat-
ings, reports nytimes.com. In addition to giving the hosting job to Jost and Che, Michaels recruited a number of current and former S.N.L. cast members. The show began with a satirical musi-
cal number on Hollywood’s diversity problem, led by two stalwarts — Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon. In their opening remarks, Che and Jost made only veiled references to the Trump presidency, which had been a staple of onstage remarks at the last Emmys ceremony, and to the #MeToo movement. In a taped segment midway through the broadcast, the show returned to diversity as a theme, with Che handing out “reparations Emmys” to black actors from past shows, including Jimmie Walker and John Witherspoon. The focus on diversity became ironic as the night wore on, with one white person after another delivering acceptance speeches. Before the ceremony was done,
there were victories for AfricanAmerican actors and performers Regina King, for Seven Seconds; Thandie Newton for her work in Westworld; and an Emmy for RuPaul, of RuPaul’s Drag Race but the great majority of winners did not reflect the night’s theme. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a series created by Amy ShermanPalladino about a housewife who tries her luck as a comedian in 1950s New York, had a big night, taking five awards, including best comedy series. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the show’s title character, won for best actress in a comedy, the first new winner in that category in seven years. Sherman-Palladino won for directing and writing, in addition to the best comedy series award. And Alex Borstein, who plays Mrs. Maisel’s manager, took the award for best supporting actress.

community news/MIDWEST Indian Citizen Pleads Joyalukkas Group Extends a Helping Guilty to Immigration Fraud Scheme Hand to Flood-Devastated Kerala 2
FRIDAY,14 SEPTEMBER , 2018
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL— The Joyalukkas Group joins in rebuilding a flood devastated Kerala with a project of constructing 250 houses for those who have lost their homes in the greatest flood of the century. A sum of fifteen crores is being put towards this goal. This project is supported by employees of the Joyalukkas Group, as well as a large number of well-wishers. The Chairman of the Joyalukkas Group, Joy Alukkas, as well as the Director of the Joyalukkas Foundation, Jolly Joy have stated that the Joyalukkas Foundation will see that houses costing six lakhs each will be constructed. “Our dream is to construct houses that will bring joy to the hearts of those who own them,” they said. Each house will have a total area of 600 square feet, with two bedrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen. Joy Alukkas also stated that in the worst affected areas, houses will be built in tune with the environment only after proper consultation with expert architects and according to the

plans submitted by them. The purpose of this mega project by the Joyalukkas group is to support the Government of Kerala’s initiative
in Rebuilding Kerala. The Chairman also informed that the project had been submitted to the Chief Minister and would be carried out with the help of the self-governing bodies in each location. Those who have lost their homes in the floods and landslides may submit their applications in person at the sales outlet of the Joyalukkas Group nearest to them. These applications will be carefully studied by a committee constituted by the Joyalukkas Foundation and in consultation with the local self-governing bodies. A list of deserving candidates will be drawn up and construction will start as soon as all governmental formalities are met. It is hoped that the houses will be quickly completed and handed over to their owners. The Joyalukkas Foundation continues to give compassionate leadership in several social and humanitarian ventures. The services rendered by the Joyalukkas Foundation in activities like voluntary blood donation, protection of the environment, health care and many other causes, are indeed laudable.
USHA Plan to Celebrate 125th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Speech
BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA— The United States Hindu Alliance (USHA), a national Hindu advocacy organization, announces Chicago Address 125, a one year, 100 city celebration of the 125th anniversary of the historic speech by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893 at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. The parliament was a landmark event in the history of religions. More than 7,000 religious leaders representing various religions, faiths and Dharma traditions from all over the world took part in the event, including the young Swami Vivekananda from India who represented Hindu Dharma. By virtue of his message, that advanced ideas of tolerance, acceptance, harmony and co-existence, he became an instant celebrity within and outside the parliament. According to the Smithsonian Institute, he is one of the 25 most influential leaders who have ever visited the United States.

The launch event took place at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, the first Hindu temple of Chicago. Among the eminent personalities who addressed the audience included 4 senior leaders of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, the apex body of all the Heads of Hindu monastic orders (Sanyasi Paramparas) of India, representing more than 1.7 million Hindu monks. Poojya Swami Paramatmananda Saraswatiji, General Secretary of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, Poojya Swami Vishweshwarananda Giriji Maharajji, Poojya Madhavapriya Das Swamiji and Poojya Acharya Shri Krishnamaniji Maharaj addressed the audience. In addition, Poojya Swami Vigyananandaji, Chairman of World Hindu Foundation, Neeta Bhushan, Consul General of India in Chicago, Rajiv Malhotra, author and founder of Infinity Foundation, Poojya Swami Sharananandaji of Chinmaya Mission and Gokul Kunnath, President of
USHA spoke at the event. Chicago Address 125 is a yearlong celebration organized by the United States Hindu Alliance, in partnership with Hindu temples and associations nationwide to promote the message of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda emboldened the Hindu spirit by promoting Hindu identity, Hindu unity and Hindu empowerment. He galvanized India’s Hindus to work towards the freedom of India. Apart from its outreach to the Hindu communities across the country, USHA has also decided to strengthen the interfaith movement by promoting the vision inherent in the Chicago address. To achieve this goal, USHA has developed 5 themes that will celebrate Swami Vivekananda’s message to the world. The themes are “Inner peace leads to world peace,” “Dialogue leads to reconciliation,” “Mutual respect leads to religious harmony,” “United action leads to preservation of the planet,” and “Freedom leads to diversity”.
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC— A citizen of India pleaded guilty September 10th to operating a fraud scheme in which he used Facebook and WhatsApp to scam people wanting to buy United States visas. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, court documents show that Kanwar Sarabjit Singh (aka Sandy Singh), 51, a lawful permanent resident, used Facebook and WhatsApp to falsely represent himself as an employee of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Singh pleaded guilty to wire fraud and impersonation of a federal officer and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when sentenced on December 14. He posed as an employee in the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service who could obtain genuine United States visas in exchange for a fee of $3,000 to $4,000. As part of his scheme, Singh created a fake photo identification document which purported to be from DHS. He emailed the ID to others in an effort to show that he was, in fact, able to obtain United States immigration documents. Singh instructed individuals seeking immigration documents to email him passport photographs, copies of their passports and other personally identifying information and to send him money via overnight delivery service or by wire transfer. After receiving these documents and the requested fee up front, Singh created and emailed fake letters purporting to be from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, which falsely represented that there was an appointment to pick up the requested visa documents. Many of Singh’s victims resided overseas and were impoverished, the press release said. In addition to this visa fraud scheme, Singh also admitted to engaging in an investment fraud scheme in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 2012, in which he defrauded approximately 22 investors of approximately $340,000. Singh gained the trust of a local pastor and his church, including elderly members, and falsely represented to them that he owned a small company in India that provided labor for services, including data entry, to two large, international companies and that for a small, upfront investment, they would see a large return on their money. Christine Al-Wazzan appointed as Kuwait Airways regional director
Christine Al Wazzan
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- Chicago Election Board Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez on Wednesday encouraged Chicagoans to sign up to serve as Judges of Election to help staff the city’s precinct polling places at the Nov. 6 General Election, particularly in areas on the city’s North Side. Election Judges may complete the applications online at www.chicagoelections. com under “Serving As An Election Judge.” Judges who complete training and then successfully serve on Election Day are now paid $200 per election, Hernandez noted. Those who serve on Nov. 6 also will be first in line if they want to serve at the equally important Municipal Election in February 2019. “We need citizens to work on Election Day, to manage our polling places and to help
C
their neighbors exercise the right to vote at this critical midterm election,” Hernandez said. “We have approximately 6,800 judges citywide, but we really need 10,000 to be fully staffed citywide. Our most significant needs are in North Side Wards,” Hernandez said. Areas with the most significant needs for Election Judges include: 4 The 42nd Ward which covers downtown and the West Loop, 4The 1st , 2nd and 32nd Wards on the Near North Side, 4The 41st, 45th and 39th Wards from O’Hare to Sauganash on the Northwest Side, 4The 43rd Ward in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, 4The 47th Ward in the Ravenswood/ North Center neighborhoods, and 4The 50th Ward in the West Rogers Park neighborhood.
