coring the first win for Indian-Americans in the US mid-term elections, South Carolina’s Republican Governor Nikki Haley handily beat Democratic state Senator Vincent Sheheen to win a second term. Born Nimrata ‘Nikki’ Randhawa, the 42-year-old daughter of Sikh immigrants from India became the first minority and first female governor of the state four years ago. according to local WCIV TV. Sheheen never gained the traction necessary in the rematch to close the gap, despite hammering Haley on her first-term blunders, it said noting Haley won over voters by successfully branding herself as the “jobs governor.” “Governor Nikki Haley has done an extraordinary job for South Carolina; her leadership is making the difference,” the Republican Governors Association chairman Chris Christie said in a statement following her re-election victory. “With Haley at the helm for four more years, South Carolina is sure to experience continued growth and success. Governor Haley, and because of her, it’s going to be another great four years. “The Republican Governors Association is proud to congratulate Governor Haley on her re-election,” said, Christie, who is the New Jersey governor. Associated Press exit poll interviews showed that Haley’s strength lies with traditional GOP voters. She did her best among white evangelicals and Tea Party supporters as well as voters with “negative” feelings about President Barack Obama’s administration. record 30 Indian-Americans contested U.S. elections on November 4 that determined the course of power politics in the last two years of President Barack Obama’s term in office. Nearly three million people of Indian descent with an ever growing number of officials in high places, are better educated, earn more than other Americans, but haven’t had much of an impact on national politics though they have two state governors and a lawmaker in the House. Prominent among Desi contestants to the House were Democrat Amerish ‘Ami’ Bera, a former Obama administration official Rohit ‘Ro’ Khanna, Neel Kashkari

Bera, whose parents immigrated from Rajkot was up against Republican businessman Doug Ose in California’s 7th district with former President Bill Clinton coming to stump for him last week. Hours before the crucial U.S. mid -term polls, Congressman Ami Bera’s re-election campaign got a shot in the arm with U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama recording phone message appealing to voters to vote for him. “Your vote for Ami Bera will make a real difference in supporting our President. US ELECTION
Riding a wave of discontent with President Barack Obama and his policies, Republicans picked at least six Senate seat to wrest control of the Upper Chamber
Republicans snatch US Senate P IANS, WASHINGTON
resident Barack faced the prospect of a tightening gridlock in his final two years in office as Republicans gained at least six seats to wrest back control of the Senate for the first time in eight years. Riding a wave of discontent with Obama and his policies, Republicans picked their sixth Senate seat in North Carolina, where Thom Tillis defeated incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan to consolidate their power on Capitol Hill, the New York Times reported. The conservative opposition who already lead the House needed to gain six seats from 36 seats up for grabs in the November 4 mid-term elections to wrest control of the upper chamber, where Obama’s Democrats currently have a 53-45 majority with two Independents in the mix. Five other Democratic-held seats picked up by Republicans in their quest for Senate majority came in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas and West Virginia,

according to CNN projections. The channel also projected that Republicans will maintain their grip on the 435-member House of Representatives where they currently have a 233-199 lead.
Obama, whose job approval rating has fallen to 45 percent in recent days, will meet leaders of both parties on November 7. A divided government with Republicans controlling the leg-
islative wing and Democrats in charge of the administration would further tighten the gridlock in Washington. On the other hand, observers believe that the situation may
induce both sides to make compromises in a spirit of give and take to move forward on issues like immigration reforms. The Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, who is expected to become majority leader if the Republicans gain control of the Senate easily overcame Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes in his re-election race in Kentucky. “For too long, this administration has tried to tell the American people what is good for them and then blame somebody else when their policies didn’t work out,” McConnell was quoted as saying in a victory speech. The first wave of exit polls analysed by CNN on November 4 show dissatisfaction with the Obama administration. Roughly six in ten voters are either angry or dissatisfied with Obama, though about the same proportion feel the same way about Republican leaders in Congress. And most voters have an unfavorable view of both parties.
Voters faced problems at some places IANS, WASHINGTON
A
sizable number of voters in Texas on November 4 said they were denied to vote as they did not have photo identification. In North Carolina, voters who appeared at the wrong precinct could not vote. And in Georgia, hundreds of voters called a hotline to say they were not sure if their voter registrations had been processed. In many other cases, the accounts seemed to reflect concerns raised by civic groups and civil rights leaders that new photo identification requirements in several states and cutbacks in early voting and same-day registration in others would deter significant numbers of people from participating in the elections. Most of the new policies were adopted by Republican legislatures in the name of electoral integrity, even though evidence of voter fraud has been negligible. They are opposed by Democrats who say tighter rules are aimed at discouraging minorities, poor people and college students, groups that tend to prefer Democrats, from voting. Many of the changes adopted in
recent years “will make it harder for millions of Americans to participate,” said Wendy R. Weiser, director of the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law was quoted as saying by a website. Republicans say the charges have been blown out of proportion. “We believe these claims are made for partisan purposes to rile up the Democrat Party base,” Michael B. Thielen, executive director of the Republican National Lawyers Association in Washington said. There were problems at a number of polling places around the country that did not appear to be

Most of the new policies were adopted by Republican legislatures in the name of electoral integrity, even though evidence of voter fraud has been negligible. They are opposed by Democrats who say tighter rules are aimed at discouraging minorities, poor people and college students related to partisan agendas. In Florida’s Broward County technical problems and voter confusion about polling sites led to delays
and an emergency request by Democrat candidate Charlie Crist, for a two-hour extension of voting hours. A judge denied the request.
Countering this year’s trend, the Democratic-controlled Illinois Government loosened the rules, permitting same-day registration, extending early-voting times, ending photo ID requirements in early voting and making it easier for college students to vote. Calling the changes a pilot project, the Legislature adopted them for this election only. Thielen, leader of the Republican lawyers’ group, called the temporary imposition of the measures
“outrageous” and a transparent effort by Democrats to seek advantage in this year’s races for governor and other offices in Illinois. The Supreme Court allowed disputed changes to take effect for this election in Ohio, which cut early voting on November 2 that was popular with black churches; in North Carolina, where early voting was curbed and registration abolished; and in Texas, which adopted country’s most stringent photo identification rules.

Wagah bombers vow ‘revenge’ Terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban that carried out suicide attack at Wagah has followed it up with a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Rajnath calls for combined efforts to tackle terrorism
IANS, NEW DELHI
T
ehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar (TTP-JA) spokesperson ‘Ehsanullah Ehsan’ said: “You are the killer of hundreds of Muslims.” He said this in a message released on his Twitter feed on November 3, hours after claiming responsibility for the Wagah strike, “We w(il)l take the revenge of innocent people of Kashmir and Gujarat” (sic). Meanwhile, Modi has been briefed at least twice in the last fortnight on the growing threat from transnational jihadist groups operating from Pakistan’s north-west and their new Indian affiliates, who give them the assets needed to execute their threats. One arm of the Indian Mujahideen, led by Karachi-based Riyaz Shahbandri and his lieutenant Muhammad Ahmad Zarar Siddibapa, has merged into al-Qaeda, intelligence officials say. The rival Indian Mujahideen group, known as the Ansar-ulTauheed, is training at camps run by the TTP-JA. Each of the groups who have acquired Indian partners have rejected talks with the Pakistani government, instead committing to the destruction of the Pakistani state. Led by Maulana Qasim, the TTP-JA was founded in September by commanders who rejected the Tehreek-e-Taliban’s decision to talk to the Pakistani government.
SC reserves order on actor Salman Khan NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on November 5 reserved its order on a Rajasthan government appeal that challenges a High Court Salman Khan order suspending the actor’s conviction in a poaching case and said that Salman Khan’s conviction could not be stayed merely because it comes in the way of his getting a British visa. “You say you are facing hardship because you won’t get a UK visa if the conviction is not suspended. Tomorrow, convicted politicians can come to this court saying they are facing hardship so suspend the conviction. Can we do that?” the judges asked. A Supreme Court ruling last year disqualifies a convicted politician from holding public office and bars him or her from contesting elections for a number of years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed at least twice in the last fortnight on the growing threat from transnational jihadist groups operating from Pakistan.
Inspired by the Islamic State, its leadership also has close personal ties with al-Qaeda chief Ayman alZawahiri. Its key commander, journalist-turned-jihadist Omar Khalid Khorasani, seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government, impose shari’a, seize the country’s nuclear weapons, and wage jihad until “the
Caliphate is established across the world”. In February, Omar Khalid executed 23 Pakistani soldiers by beheading, a message both to prodialogue commanders and the army. Al-Zawahiri, in turn, has created a new subcontinental wing of alQaeda, that has threatened strikes against India.

benchmark index of Indian equities markets touched a record high of 28,010 points in the intra-trade session on November 5, surpassing the previous high of 27,969.82 points hit on November 3. The index provisionally closed the day’s trade up 50 points or 0.18 percent around 3.30 p.m. at 27,910.42 points after coming down from the psychological barrier of 28,000mark. Healthy buying was observed in bank, healthcare and capital goods stocks, while selling pressure was seen in the metal, oil and gas and power sectors. The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 27,907.19 points, closed the trade provisionally at 27,910.42 points (at 3.30 p.m.), up 50.04 points or 0.18 percent
from the previous day’s close at 27,860.38 points. The Sensex touched a high of 28,010.39 points and a low of 27,857.65 points in the intra-trade. According to Angel Broking, the Indian markets were expected to open on flat note tracking SGX Nifty and most of Asian markets. On November 4, the US stocks fell, led by energy companies as oil reached a three-year low. European stocks too fell. Other market analysts said they expect further reforms being announced by the government which in turn might lead the bursar into a bullish spell over the medium term.
MONACO: Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on November 5 called on governments across the world to collectively address the issue of safe havens for organized criminal and terrorist groups. “Governments across the world have to collectively address the issue of safe havens for organized criminal and terrorist groups and their tainted money,” said Rajnath Singh at an Interpol ministerial meeting and general assembly here. He added: “Lifting banking secrecy and the corporate veil in corruption and terrorist-related cases would go a long way in bringing the criminals to book. States must refrain from organizing, instigating, facilitating, participating in, financing, encouraging or tolerating terrorist activities.” Addressing the meet in Hindi, Singh said there was a need for far greater vigilance and stricter provisions so as to make off-shore jurisdiction more transparent. He also called on evolving a strategy to tackle cybercrime. “In the recent years, the internet and social media are being increasingly used to instigate communal riots to destabilize the state. We need to strengthen our strategy relating to cyber-crime on this momentous
occasion of the centenary year of the Interpol,” he tweeted. The minister highlighted that the internet of late has become the “principal means of communication for extremist groups”. “These specific internet forums act as a virtual firewall to help safeguard the identities of those who participate. To counter violent extremists, there is an urgent need to strengthen the Global Counter Terrorism Architecture,” Singh said. The home minister also pointed out that the 21st century has seen a significant increase in international criminal activity. “In the 21st century, there has been a significant increase in the range and scope of international criminal activity,” Singh said. The dynamics of globalization and financial transactions across borders have enabled international crime groups to expand their global reach, he added. “The world is also witnessing some cataclysmic changes as lethal non-state actors fired by toxic ideology turning into state themselves,” Singh said. “Outdated laws have to be weeded out with effective legislations that can address corruption, recovery and confiscation of illgotten wealth.”
Separatists call for shutdown in J&K SRINAGAR: Restrictions were imposed in some areas of the Srinagar city on November 5 as separatists called for a protest shutdown against the killing of two youths in army firing in Badgam district, an official said. “Restrictions have been imposed today (Nov 5) in Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Nowgam areas to ensure nobody disturbs peace in the city,” a senior police officer told IANS here. Sepa-
ratist leaders, including hardline Syed Ali Geelani, have called for a protest shutdown in the Valley Wednesday against the killing of Faisal Yusuf Bhat and Mehrajuddin Dar in army firing Monday in Chattergam village.

Sexist slur against Nikki Haley?
Democrat Vincent Sheheen apologizes for his remark against the South Carolina Governor ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
R
eflecting the falling standard of United States politics, the Democratic opponent of South Carolina’s Indian-origin Governor Nikki Haley abused her with a sexist slur, but more shockingly the mainstream U.S. media largely ignored the story. Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa, the daughter of Sikh immigrant parents, herself addressed his sexist comments this week saying Vincent Sheheen’s laughter after “accidentally” calling her a “whore” was like “a kick in the gut.” But the Washington Post blog ‘The Fix’ chose to ignore the larger issue. It instead focused on the ‘unhappiness’ of Ann Romney, the wife of
Robbers targeting Indian Americans NEW YORK: Robbers are targeting the homes of Indian Americans in New Jersey post-Diwali, a media report said on November 1. In the latest such incident, the house of Rajesh Singh at Netherwood Circle in Middlesex County was targeted by three masked men on October 30. “They just came into the house, tied us up and took away whatever we had,” pix11.com quoted Singh as saying. Police are in search of the three masked men who robbed Singh and his family at gunpoint. The Netherwood Circle incident followed those in South Plainfield and Old Bridge and is the fourth one after Diwali. All the cases involved Indian American victims. The modus operandi of the criminals is learnt to be similar in all the four cases and the robbers seem to have the knowledge that Indian families tend to bring out their valuables and jewellery from inside the closet during Diwali celebrations and clearly have been trying to take advantage of that. “It’s very discouraging for us because we are here to celebrate, but now everybody’s scared and nobody knows what will happen next,” Singh’s neighbor Kalpit Khamar said. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has announced a reward for information that leads to any arrest in this connection. — IANS

Sheheen can be heard saying, “we are going to escort whore out the door,” about a minute into his remarks and then corrected himself by adding, “we’re going to escort her out the door.” The chuckling came when the crowd responded to his remarks with applause. saying his words were “garbled” “but the damage was done,” USA Today commented. Ann Romney blasted Sheheen’s original comment and called it “unacceptable” in an interview with CNN. Republican senator Ted Cruz, denounced what he called a “personal attack” on Haley in a Facebook post. Local South Carolina media
outlet FITS reported more fully Haley’s statements “in response to her Democratic opponent (inadvertently?) calling her a ‘whore.’” “I haven’t spent a lot of time on this and you have not heard me talk about it and it’s because whether it was a gaffe or not, I really don’t care,” Haley was quoted as saying at a news conference.
Sikh group seeks Obama support for justice for 1984 riots IANS, WASHINGTON
A
n umbrella Sikh group and a couple of human right bodies have written a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama seeking his support for justice for the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in India that claimed 3,000 lives. “We are writing to urge the Obama administration to call on India's new government to bring justice to the victims of the 1984 massacres by prosecuting those responsible,” the Sikh Coalition, Ensaaf and Human Rights Watch wrote in the letter sent Monday. “Although various government commissions found that some
police and Congress Party officials instigated or were complicit in attacks, the primary architects of this violence have escaped jus-
tice,” they wrote. “Given the important role that India is poised to play, and is increasingly seeking, in setting international policypotentially as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council- we urge you to address impunity for the 1984 premeditated violence in your engagement with India.” Only 30 people have been convicted for these crimes, with police and prosecution authorities failing to bring government and party officials allegedly involved to justice, the three groups said. The groups alleged that the entire Sikh community was targeted in retribution for the October
31, 1984 assassination of then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards. Although India's former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh - himself a Sikh — tendered an apology for the 1984 massacres, he refused to accept state responsibility or make a commitment to justice, they claimed. “India's failure to deliver justice for these events reflects an abdication of moral responsibility on the part of successive governments from different parties, and undercuts India's claims that it respects human rights and the rule of law,” the groups wrote.

NEW DELHI: India on November 4 welcomed a Pentagon report that points fingers at Pakistan for allowing Afghan- and Indian-focused militants to continue to operate from its soil “to the detriment of Afghan and regional stability”. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the Pentagon report “manifests a growing acknowledgement in the international community of the extent of Pakistan’s involvement in international terrorism”. The Pentagon told the U.S. Congress in its latest six-monthly report on the current situation in Afghanistan: “Afghan- and Indian-focused militants continue to operate from Pakistan territory to the detriment of Afghan and regional stability.” “In May, the Indian consulate in Herat province was attacked by a group of four heavily armed militants. The attack came three days prior to the swearing-in of the new Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi.” “Prime Minister Modi is perceived as being close to Hindu nationalist groups,” said the report.

Wagah attack findings to be submitted in three days; death toll touches 60 IANS, ISLAMABAD
P
akistan’s Punjab government has formed a joint investigation team to probe the Wagah suicide attack. It will submit its report in the next three days. Home Minister Shuja Khanzada on November 3 said the probe team, comprising representatives of Chenab Rangers, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Counter Terrorism Department, Special Branch and Punjab Police, will look for possible security lapses that allowed the suicide bomber to reach the venue, Dawn online reported on November 4. He admitted that the authorities were warned on October 31 of a terrorist attack in Lahore and that Wagah border was among the possible targets. The information, he claimed, had been conveyed in time to the Rangers under whose jurisdiction the Wagah parade ground falls. In light of the information, two dozen more police personnel were deputed to the joint check post of Rangers and police. The minister said that it was not yet clear how the bomber managed to reach the spot after dodging the
joint check post and a couple of pickets on the way. He did not rule out the involvement of a foreign hand. Punjab government spokesman Syed Zaeem Qadri said that the enthusiasm of the people during the flag-lowering ceremony on November 3 was proof of the fact that the nation had rejected the terrorist act and was supporting the army. At least 60 people were killed and over 110 injured on November 2 when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the Wagah border. The suicide bombing near Wagah
check point in Pakistan has drawn wide condemnation in India, with the government calling for “the firmest and most comprehensive action” against all terror groups. Politicians have sought united efforts to deal with terrorism. In a statement, the government said it “strongly condemns the dastardly terrorist attack”. “We believe that only the firmest and most comprehensive action against all terror groups without any distinction is the only way to defeat this evil scourge,” said the Indian government.
India assures death row fishermen of release CHENNAI/COLOMBO: India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Yash Sinha on November 4 met the five Indian fishermen sentenced to death at Colombo’s Welikada prison and assured them of every effort to secure their early release, even as in Chennai the MDMK accused the government of “playing with the lives of Indian fishermen”. Sinha met the five Indians Emerson, P. Augustus, R. Wilson, K. Prasath and J. Langlet — who were awarded the death sentence by the Colombo High Court on October 30 on charges of drug trafficking. The high commissioner met them at the superintendent’s office where he handed over some clothes and toiletries and enquired about their welfare. He assured them of unstinted support and cooperation of the Indian government in ensuring that their case
receives the utmost attention and that the government of India will make all efforts to secure their early release and repatriation to India. The fishermen appeared in good health and requested permission to write to their relatives in Tamil Nadu and also to make telephone calls. The prison authorities readily agreed and said they would arrange for telephone calls to be made by the prisoners in a couple of days. Meanwhile, they were free to write letters to their relatives, the sources added.
Police arrest HuJI leader from Dhaka DHAKA: A leader of the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI) has been arrested in Bangladesh, police said. Md. Ibrahim, 40, was nabbed from Sayedabad area of Dhaka on November 4 night, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) additional deputy commissioner Saidur Rahman. Detective Branch deputy commissioner Jahangir Hossain Matubbar said that Ibrahim, who recently received terror training abroad,
was the chief of the organization’s operations wing. Details of the arrest will be provided in a media briefing later, said the police official. On November 1, three HuJI members were held from Dhaka's Postogola area. Two of them were planning to take training in Pakistan, police said. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), earlier, arrested some members of the outfit, who were caught with explosives, detonators and other bomb-making materials.

2G scam: Raja, Kani charged Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special judge frames charges against the two prime accused, trial to commence from November 11 IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he special court hearing the 2G spectrum allocation case has framed charges of money laundering against former telecom minister A. Raja, his party colleague and DMK MP Kanimozhi and others, and fixed November 11 for the commencement of the trial. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge O.P. Saini framed the charges on October 31. The accused have been booked under various sections dealing with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. “I find that there is enough material on record to make out or to presume a prima facie case against each of the accused for committing an offence of money laundering,” the court said, going by the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate. The charges are defined under Section 3 (Offence of Money Laundering) and punishable under Sec-

tion 4 (Punishment of Money Laundering) of the Act, the court said. The court will also record witness statements as the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. Others charged include Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka of Swan telecom, Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables, film producer Karim Morani, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal and Kalaignar TV’s Sharad Kumar
and P. Amirthan. These companies, as also Cineyug Media and Entertainment, Kalaignar TV, Dynamix Realty, Eversmile Construction, Conwood Construction and Developers, DB Realty and Nihar Construction were also booked. The directorate said it came to light that `2 bn was paid by the promoters of Swan Telecom, using their group firm Dynamix Realty, to Kalaignar TV via Kusegaon and Cineyug in the
garb of a legitimate financial transaction. The accused tried to pass off the payment as a loan/share application money, it said. The payment, the charge sheet said, was illegal gratification for, and on behalf of, Raja and his associates in lieu of illegal favours for Swan Telecom for the grant of telecom licence, the Enforcement Directorate contended. The judge said the role of each accused had been narrated in the complaint, adding that there were factual and credible allegations against each of the accused. “A complaint is like a plaint. Its contents are required to be proved by the complainant in the witness box,” the court said. “These allegations do not require the support of earlier statements like a police charge sheet, which is, by and large, supported by statements,” the court said. “There are some statements as well as documents on the record in support of the allegations.”

‘Nothing to hide in alleged graft case’ KANNUR (KERALA): Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on November 4 his government has “nothing to hide or fear” in one of his ministers allegedly accepting a bribe of `10 million to allow 418 bars to operate. Speaking to reporters here, Chandy said V.S.Achuthanandan had earlier demanded for a probe by the vigilance department into the alleged graft case. “We immediately ordered a vigilance probe, but he now wants the CBI to probe the issue. This shows he has gone back on his demand,” Chandy said. Finance Minister K.M. Mani came under a cloud when the Bar Hotel Owners Association working president Biju Ramesh alleged that he has taken `10 million as bribe to ensure that the 418 bars ordered to be closed are allowed to operate. “He thought that we will not consider his first request. We have nothing to fear or hide on this issue. If he desires a CBI probe, let him give a letter (demanding the same),” said Chandy. This has now become the latest issue to hit the Chandy government, but Chandy stands firm that this is a baseless allegation.
‘Kiss of love’: Rising against moral policing IANS, KOCHI
T A vanishing tribe on the fringes of Karnataka forests BANGALORE: Living far from the madding crowd and on the fringes of the deep forests in the bio-diverse Western Ghats off coastal Karnataka are the Halakki Vokkaligaru, a vanishing tribe, whose younger generation is a victim of modern lifestyle. Having survived over the centuries carrying the hoary tradition of their ancestors, the aboriginal older generation, especially its womenfolk, are at their wits’ end on how to perpetuate their rich legacy. “From being the last generation, we are wary of becoming a lost generation, as our progeny is not interested in following values, customs and traditions or living our way of life. They are after creature comforts and modern life at the cost of our moorings,” the unique tribal community’s head, Chaudappa, 60, told IANS. Spread across scores of hamlets
in Uttara Kannada district, about 470 km from Bangalore, the Halakki tribe is grappling with the challenge of preserving its rich culture, rituals, artifacts and rustic life in the face of resistance from generation next. Literacy and exposure to urban lifestyle in nearby towns alienated the tribal kin to abandon their colorful attire comprising distinct jewellery, colorful beads and bangles, long necklaces, heavy ear and nose rings and wearing a sari without a blouse. “Believe it or not, matrimony ads are posted online (Bandhan.com) under ‘Brides and Grooms for Halakki Vokkaligaru’. Boys and girls choose partners and decide when to tie the nuptial knot. In our days, we could not dare to meet our prospective bride before the wedding, as it was the prerogative of our elders to decide whom to marry and when,” Choudappa said.

There was a tense atmosphere from noon onwards, with hundreds of people, mainly onlookers, gathering at Marine Drive, opposite IG’s office, to see the kissing “live”. As for KOL volunteers, by around four in the evening young men and women and even middle
aged couples from various parts of Kerala had converged at a few points in the city to protest against the growing incidents of moral policing in the state. Their aim was to march to Marine Drive where
‘Kiss of Love’ would be formally held. At that time at Marine Drive around 5,000 onlookers had gathered. Youngsters flashing iPhones and perched on tree tops began clicking whichever woman passed.
Neera: farmers’ lucky charm, drinkers’ delight SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
A
fter waiting in the wings for long, thanks to bureaucratic delays, neera, a coconut water-based non-alcoholic drink, appears to have finally come of age and is all set to become the coconut farmers’ lucky charm and the drinkers’ delight. Tapped from the bunches on coconut trees, neera is sweet and a proven health drink, while toddy, also from the same source, has an alcohol content of five to eight percent. Hence there was a long delay
in rewriting the excise rules for neera. In simple terms, the difference between neera and toddy is that between milk and curd.
The liquid that comes out from the bunches is collected in pots. A separate pot is used for toddy and the liquid ferments because of the presence of sediments in the pot. A clean pot is used for collecting neera, which has a shelf-life of a few hours and has to be processed before that. Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan said neera will be a winwin situation for farmers and drinkers. “On an average, a bunch of neera will see the owners of coconut trees richer by around `1,200 per tree per month,” Mohanan told IANS.

IPL spot-fixing: Panel submits key report The apex court will take up the hearing on November 10 IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Supreme Courtappointed Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee on November 3 submitted to the court its final report on the investigation into allegations of betting and spot-fixing in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The committee, which investigated the allegations against sidelined Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief N. Srinivasan, who is now the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman, and 12 others, submitted the report in a sealed cover.
An apex court bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice R. In the course of the last hearing of the matter on September 1, the apex court, while declining Srinivasan’s plea to be reinstated as the BCCI president, gave the Mudgal committee two more months to complete and submit the final report of its probe in the scandal that rocked the cash-rich league last year. Delhi Police were the first to bust the scandal after they arrested three
Rajasthan Royals cricketers - S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — in a midnight raid in Mumbai during the tournament. Later, Mumbai police also unearthed betting links after they arrested Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh. In October last year, the Supreme Court appointed a threemember committee, headed by former High Court Judge Mukul Mudgal and comprising additional solicitor general L. After being put in to bat, the openers posted a 231-run partnership to help India reach a huge total of 363/5 in 50 overs and in reply Sri Lanka surrendered at 194 all out in 39.2 overs. During the Indian innings, Suresh Raina (52), Virat Kohli (22) and Ambati Rayudu (27) also contributed to the total after the strong foundation laid by Rahane and Dhawan. When I saw him coming I decided to go for extra boost, but I never got it,” Rosberg was quoted as saying by Xinhua. “I thought I was using the right thing but there was a delay in that one. If I did it with a button, it would be immediate but with a switch there is a delay, so I never got the extra ERS,” said the German, who started from pole but surrendered the lead to race

So that was a mistake that I didn’t know about.” The result further widened the gap in the drivers’ standings between the secondplaced Rosberg and leader Hamilton, who now has a 24point advantage heading into next weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, in a poor outing for Force India, drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez failed to earn points after retiring from the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix here. Force India currently sit in sixth position in the constructors’ standings with 123 points. In drivers’ standings, Hulkenberg is ninth with 76 points while Perez is 11th with 47.
Tendulkar presents first copy of autobiography to mother IANS, MELBOURNE
I
ndian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented the first copy of his autobiography Playing It My Way, to be released on November 6, to his mother Rajni. “Gave the first copy of my book to my mother. Look of pride on her face was a priceless moment ! #PlayingItMyWayLaunch,” Sachin tweeted, attaching a photograph of him presenting his mother the book. Tendulkar’s autobiography has created a lot of buzz in the country as it has thrown light on some of the
most crucial moments of the former batting superstar’s career. Meanwhile, former Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell on November
2 denied Sachin Tendulkar’s claim that the Australian had asked the Indian legend to replace then skipper Rahul Dravid prior to the 2007 World Cup. Chappell had initially refused to respond to Tendulkar’s claims but then released a statement through Cricket Australia (CA), where he is working as a national talent manager. “Whilst I don’t propose to get into a war of words, I can state quite clearly that during my time as Indian coach I never contemplated Sachin replacing Dravid as captain. I was therefore very surprised to read
the claims made in (Tendulkar’s) book,” said Chappell, who coached India in 2005-07. “During those years, I only ever visited Sachin’s home once and that was with our physio and assistant coach during his rehabilitation from injury, at least 12 months earlier than what was reported in the book. We enjoyed a pleasant afternoon together but the subject of captaincy was never raised.” Tendulkar has written in his autobiography Playing It My Way that Chappell told him that together they “could control Indian cricket for years”.

When death ruled Delhi streets A mob fury against the Sikh community quickly enveloped the national capital during 1984 riots, with frenzied supporters of Congress politicians attacking innocent Sikhs and their property MR NARAYAN SWAMY, NEW DELHI
I
t was an accidental meeting with a Military Police officer that led us to the house of death in Delhi in 1984. We had witnessed on the evening of October 31 the first bout of anti-Sikh violence that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination. We were near the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in south Delhi where the prime minister was declared dead after being shot by two Sikh bodyguards. A mob fury against the Sikh community quickly enveloped the city, with frenzied supporters of known Congress politicians attacking innocent Sikhs and their property. Reporter Jagpreet Luthra and I saw a Sikh-owned bus set on fire and Sikh-owned shops getting looted at the Kidwai Nagar market, a stone’s throw distance from AIIMS. “Maro Sardaron ko!” The cries were chilling. The atmosphere was frightening. Police were nowhere in sight although they existed in hundreds near the AIIMS. In any case, they made no effort to stop anyone. Jagpreet quickly took off her ‘kada’ and put it in her purse. She didn’t want anyone to know she was a Sikh. It was the first time after the holocaust of 1947 that Sikh identity became an invitation to death. But with the nation’s focus rivet-

ed on Indira Gandhi’s assassination per se, no one seemed to really know the extent and depth of the mounting violence against Sikhs. It was not the age of technology. Most journalists in most media houses were busy with political stories. But everyone knew something was gravely wrong. It was close to November 1 noon that my UNI colleagues Dipanker De Sarkar, Rajiv Pande and I chanced upon the Military Police

Police mortuary to know the full extent of the savagery. “Why are you wasting your time going around the city?” Professionally, I am glad we acted on his advice. As we entered the mortuary at Subzi Mandi, we saw a man bringing a pile of dismembered bodies on a wheelbarrow. He would later tell us that he picked them up near the New Delhi Railway Station. Placed all
along the corridors of the mortuary were many more bodies — of Sikhs waylaid in various parts of the city and brutally killed, most of them not even knowing what their crime was. If I recall right, I counted 172 or 173 bodies - in several rows, neatly placed one after the other. That was when one of the policemen whispered, pointing to a large dimly lit room: “Go there and see.” What we saw was bone chilling. Piled up shabbily like a mini mountain — like sacks of food grain in a warehouse — were bodies after bodies, of men and women, most of the dress on the victims drenched in blood. Some bodies had no clothes. A strong stench hit us all. I recall Dipankar rushing out to throw up. There was no way we could count how many bodies were stuffed there. The doctor in charge of the mortuary, L.T. Ramani, calmly shared with us the statistics. The story we filed for UNI an hour later was the first to tell the world that hundreds — yes, hundreds — of Sikhs had been slaughtered in Delhi by Congress-sponsored mobs to avenge Indira Gandhi’s assassination. For three full days from the evening of October 31, killer mobs ruled Delhi. There was no area they spared, barring perhaps the very heart where VVIPs reside. The state simply withered away.

To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali. In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth. It is said the goddess of wealth, known as Lakshmi, visits the homes of devotees on this day, and lamps light the way to welcome her. A MassMutual study** found that although 77 percent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 percent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies; only 46
percent have a formal retirement plan. “Entrepreneurial businesses are vital to our growing economic recovery, so it is concerning that so many business owners seem to be sacrificing their own and their family’s financial future,” says Nimesh Trivedi, Asian-Indian Market lead at MassMutual. “With help, business owners can look past the seemingly overwhelming day-to-day demands of running their businesses and establish and meet their long-term financial goals.” To help Asian Indian business owners open their new books this Diwali and plan for a prosperous new year, MassMutual is offering a series of free video-based seminars featuring stories shared by real business owners. The vignettes explore critical business planning topics, such as passing ownership on from one generation to the next, preparing for the unexpected, the death of an owner, retaining key employees, and proper estate and retirement planning. Seminars addressing these topics critical to Asian Indian business owners were presented in the following cities across the country this Diwali: • Houston, Oct. 14 • Atlanta: Oct. 18 • San Jose, Calif.: Oct. 24 • Edison, N.J.: Oct. 29

SRI SRI’S THREE-DAY VISIT MESMERIZES CHICAGOANS BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO (IL) -- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Guruji), a global humanitarian and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, was in Chicago from October 23 to 26 to conduct a happiness program for Chicagoans at Hilton Chicago, 720 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL. For the auspicious occasion of Diwali, there was also Lakshmi Pooja on October 24 at Hilton Chicago which was open to all and free of charge. It was performed amidst cheering of thousands of people present. Attendance at the event was full, and there were many dignitaries present from all different professions such as political, entertainment, education, business, medical, IT (information technology), along with prominent Community leaders. Many students from university and second generation of US-born youngsters also attended the event. Acharya Rohit Joshi of Northeastern Illinois University, a Community leader and Hindu priest who also performed some rituals greeted the Guruji .
Aarti was performed for goddess Lakshmi by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Lakshmi Pooja is yet another Hindu prayer which is performed on the third day of Diwali. This is a very important pooja which is entirely devoted to worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that Lakshmi bestows wealth, prosperity and happiness to all human beings. “It is impossible to perform Lakshmi Pooja for such a huge crowd. I will do symbolic Lakshmi Pooja for all my devotees”, said Guruji. Addressing the gathering, Guruji said: “Happy Diwali to all and happy and prosperous new yar to Gujaratis. Diwali
is the festival of light, joy and prosperity. Diyas are a symbol of real life and life must be enjoyed by removing darkness from your heart. Pooja renews our contract with divinity. Pooja is a process to awaken divinity.” According to Sri Sri, each one is supposed to light one lamp. When everyone is enlightened by the glory of their own lamp, the whole environment becomes full of light, dispelling the darkness or ignorance. The spirituality also teaches the same. You light your own lamp-- the soul-- and dispel the darkness/ignorance from your heart. If each one does that in the world, we can dispel the darkness of violence, corruption, restlessness within no time. Lakshmi Pooja was celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm. Tiny diyas were lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. Devotional songs in praise of Goddess Lakshmi, were presented by a group of musicians and singers making the whole atmosphere pious. “Naivedya” of traditional sweets was offered to the Goddess, Annakut comprising

Various Hinduism-related courses offered include “Intro to Hindu Traditions”, “Yoga and Tantric Traditions”, “Gandhi and nonviolence”, etc. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, described the OSU’s approach as “a step in the right direction”. Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that religion was a complex element of life and religion comprised much more than one’s own individual experience or specific tradition. Rajan Zed urged the schools/ departments of religion and philosophy of major world universities to strengthen their Hinduism sections. Hinduism being the oldest religion with rich philosophical thought and a vast array of scriptures needed more exploration. Zed made a special appeal to the Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Stanford, Columbia, McGill, Australian National, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Heidelberg, Uppsala, and Utrecht universities to further enrich their Hinduism resources. Fez Project may draw youth to classical music BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Acclaimed Sufiana virtuoso Zila Khan, and the young Faizan Khan have introduced a movement that promises to shed new light on classical and traditional sounds. Classical music has always been an integral part of the socio-cultural fabric of India. With a burgeoning young populace, there is a need to re-connect the youth with the rich musical tapestry of the Indian fabric. Although the current music landscape is dominated by Bollywood, EDM and Pop & Rock, it is indeed heartening to hear some popular Bollywood tracks feature powerful classical backdrops. This is where comes in The Fez Project, the brainchild of Zila Khan, one of India’s most prolific classical and Sufi singers, and her son Faizan Khan. Beginning with an album of 12 songs, The Fez Project will be established as a long-term digital brand that will release periodic music
videos and tracks in a season-wise format. The objective of the project is to package and present Indian classical music in a way that the youth will connect with, imbibe, experience and enjoy. This is a concerted effort to bring back an art form that is increasingly at odds against the cacophony of varied global and more commercial sounds. For a while now, the youth has been either having a hard time understanding, or has just been shying away from their rich classical heritage.
“We aim to bring about a reconnection to our roots, particularly with regard to the youth”, said Zila Khan. “We plan to release music videos which merge classical music with genres popular today, like Beat-box, Electronic, Flamenco, etc. Tags like ‘remix’ and ‘fusion’ have become run-of-the-mill and done-to-death. “We have been careful to ensure that we don’t dilute the quality of the songs, and yet marry the two genres while keeping the essence and relevance of each intact”, she added. “We have several music festivals and music channels in India which are thoroughly promoting Bollywood music and now Indie music which is brilliant, but unfortunately no one is making an effort to revive classical. “And digital media is one of the most effective ways to reach out to a large audience, especially the youth. It’s high time that Indian Classical Music utilizes the power of the web and makes its presence felt”, said Faizan Khan.

Abhijit Pachegaokar started the concert by singing an old number “Aanese Uski Aye Bahar” from the movie “Jine Ki Raah” and then the very popular “Hum Tere Bin Aur” sung by Arijit Singh in the film Ashiquee 2. Padmini sang next combining beautifully a Telugu number and a Hindi song both based on Rag Bhimpalasi – “Neeli Meghalalo” and “Naino mein Badra Chaya”. Sadhanaji came on the stage, starting with the famous bhajan “O Paalan Hare Nirgun aur Nyare” followed by many of her own Bollywood melodies. The melody she created with her
Singing their heart out
beautiful voice was unbelievable and utterly thrilling to the audiences and the proof of that was, nobody left the auditorium until the very end of the program. She also sang some of her own south Indian melodies – Tamil and Telugu - to the delight of the fans. Nisha Saraswat did an excellent job, adding her contribution – “Jayiye Aap ka” from “Mere Sanam” and the recent hit from Ashique2 “Sun Raha Hain Na Tu”. Before the dinner, Bhima Reddy, temple’s president, gave a small presentation explaining why the temple needed funds now – for the repairs in “Ganesh, Shiva Durga” temple and for the priest’s living quarters.
He added that the elevator project which would help the elderly getting to the Rama temple with ease was almost done and due to be operational soon. His earnest appeal resulted in the flow of donations from all quarters of the audiences. Thanks to donors like Bansi Sharma, Agadi Lakshman and a host of others, the donations amounted to a little over $35,000. The ever energetic finance chair Rohini Udupa’s hard work in bringing the show to the stage was mainly responsible for the success of the fund-raiser. The tasty dinner that was served was prepared by Satya Srini and her kitchen staff. Table decorations were done by Shashi Kaveti.

Explaining the health options
BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO (IL) -- The next round of open enrollment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), known as Obamacare, is set to begin on November 15. No wonder, Get Covered Illinois (GCI) organized a forum for Asian ethnic media outlets and community leaders to discuss approaches to working together to help target the uninsured Asian American communities in Illinois and navigate them to resources to help them understand their health options and financial assistance available. Held at Truman College on October 30, panelists included Jennifer Koehler (GCI executive director), Theresa Ma (Governor’s office), Patrick Corcoran (GCI regional outreach coordinator), Edwin Chandrasekar (Asian Health Coalition), Jing Zhang (Asian Human Services) and Dr Azher Quader (Compassionate Care Network). The roundtable was organized exclusively for the Asian American community to provide updates from the state and the Governor’s office regarding plans for open enrollment, and to serve as an open forum for discussion on how best to meet the needs of diverse Asian American communities through targeted education and outreach.

ONLINE DATERS NOT LOOKING FOR
INTER-RACIAL LOVE While men prefer young women, the fairer sex look for men closer to their age IANS, NEW YORK
O
nline daters are not looking for love outside their cultural background, reveals a study, adding that women are significantly more likely than men to prefer partners within their own race. Men seemed to prefer younger women. Women, on the other hand, seemed to prefer men closer to their own age, the study from famous dating website OkCupid revealed. The findings that involved over three million OkCupid members puzzled researchers because nearly all users on the dating site support inter-racial relationships.
“An individual cannot control who turns him/her on. I do think the fact that race is a sexual factor for so many and in such a consistent way, raises deeper questions,” Christian Rudder, co-founder of the
online dating site, was quoted as saying on Daily Mail. Researchers, however, found that in the end, romantic compatibility seemed to be determined by what people had in common rather than ethnicity.
Whole grain oats for your health that oats and oat bran might provide benefits in some cases of bowel disease (one of two studies on ulcerative colitis) and constipation (14 studies). A review of the most recent and compelling studies on oats and oat bran and cardiovascular disease risk factors concluded that oats and oat bran lower total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or bad cholesterol by 2 and 19 percent and 4 and 23 percent respectively. The effects are particularly prominent among people with high cholesterol levels, the study noted. “Eating a 60-gram serving of oatmeal might lower cholesterol significantly, said Frank Thies from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

aving breakfasts of oatmeal with non-fat milk may not only reduce your hunger and increase fullness, it may also reduce your risk of obesity and improve heart health, a research showed. Oats may play an important role in improving satiety, diet quality and digestive, cardiovascular and general metabolic health, says a new, wide reaching collection of scientific reviews. The higher viscosity of the betaglucan fibre in oatmeal enhances satiety and boosts beneficial gut bacteria, the findings showed. A review of 29 studies concluded

Eating fish the right way LOS ANGELES: Eating fish has been associated with lower rates of heart disease, stroke, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. But how you eat it may be the real key to reaping its benefits, reveals a research. From adding herbs and spices to layering it up are some of the ways to make your fish eating session a healthy affair. A research by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine completed a study on volunteers who regularly ate fish and it was concluded that they had larger brain volumes in regions associated with memory and cognition, but only if the fish was baked or broiled, not fried. Baking and broiling are also better for your waistline. For example, a dozen fried shrimp can pack 280 calories, versus a mere 85 calories for 12 shrimps that have been steamed or broiled, reports huffingtonpost.com. Here are five tips for making baked and broiled seafood taste fantastic. * Use good fat: Before cooking, brush fish filets with extra virgin olive or coconut oil, or slather with a jarred sauce, such as sundried tomato, roasted red pepper or basil pesto. Or after cooking, top with sliced or chopped avocado, finely chopped nuts, or a dollop of olive tapenade or drizzle of tahini. * Add herbs and spices: There are numerous ways to season seafood,
from a simple combo of garlic and Italian herbs to a fiery layer of blackened seasonings. * Chill it: In addition to chilled shrimp cocktail, nearly any fish can be served cold after it’s cooked. Top an entrée salad with chilled fish; add it to a cold salad made with veggies and either wholegrain pasta, wild rice or quinoa; add it to a classic chilled veggie dish like a marinated cucumber salad; or spoon it into lettuce boats made from outer romaine leaves. * Add it to other dishes: After simply baking or boiling, add seafood to another flavorful dish, such as a soup, stew, stir fry or veggie “pasta” dish. Or spoon it into corn tortillas and top with pico de gallo and guacamole for a healthy version of healthy fish tacos. — IANS
Over food, songs, films, Goa will engage with its colonial past MAYABHUSHAN NAGVENKAR, PANAJI
O
ver food, songs and films, Goa will engage with the culture of its colonial past in the sixth edition of the Semana da Cultura Indo-Portuguesa, an Indo-Portuguese cultural fest stretching over four months, which kicked off on November 5. The festival will see a celebration of Indian and Portuguese culture including art, cinema, music, cuisine, theatre, literature and more. The previous edition was held in Lisbon last year on an experimental basis. Announcing this, newly appointed Portuguese Consul Gen-
eral Rui Carvalho Baceira, who is also the convenor of the festival’s executive committee, said that it will include interactive sessions on Goan culture, a fado singing competition, a Lusophone film festival, creative writing sessions and workshops and a two-day food and music festival. Literally translated as the ‘IndoPortuguese cultural week’ the festival was started in 2008 to celebrate the unique Goan fusion culture and Goan identity honed over 451 years of Portuguese rule. Unlike most parts of India which experienced British rule for nearly 200 years, Goa’s engagement with its Luso colonizers has made the
connect deeper and richer — and hence, more complex. Even though the Indian armed
forces liberated Goa in 1961, the fusion between the culture of the colonist and colonizer is still evident
in Goa’s food, music, dance, architecture, laws and even language. The earlier editions of the Semana have tried to portray Goan culture, including art, cuisine, films and other art forms through Goan and Portuguese artists who performed in Goa and delighted creatively attuned audiences here. The event will begin with a session on ‘Goan Culture - The Road Map for Tomorrow’. The festival is supported by the Consulate of Portugal, Clube Vasco-da-Gama, Clube National, Clube Harmonia, BPS Club, Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society, Fundacao Oriente and Institute Camoes.

Young heart can heal faster According to a study, the heart holds its own pool of immune cells IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he heart holds its own pool of immune cells capable of helping it to heal after injury, finds research, adding that the harmful immune cells from the bone marrow disrupts this process in adults. These immune cells are called macrophages - whether they reside in the heart or arrive from the bone marrow. Blocking the bone marrow’s macrophages from entering the heart protects the organ’s beneficial pool of macrophages, allowing them to remain in the heart where they promote regeneration and recovery, research on mouse model showed. “This may explain why the young heart can recover while the adult heart cannot,” said Kory
Lavine from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “The same macrophages that promote healing after injury in the neo-natal heart also are present in the adult heart but they seem to go away with injury,” Lavine
explained. The investigators found that the helpful macrophages originate in the embryonic heart and harmful macrophages originate in the bone marrow and could be distinguished by whether they express a
protein on their surface called CCR2. Macrophages without CCR2 originate in the heart; those with CCR2 come from the bone marrow, the research showed. The researchers found that a compound that inhibits the CCR2 protein could block the bone marrow’s macrophages from entering the heart. “When we did that, we found that the macrophages from the bone marrow did not come in,” Lavine said. “And the macrophages native to the heart remained. We saw reduced inflammation in these injured adult hearts, less oxidative damage and improved repair. We also saw new blood vessel growth,” Lavine added. The study appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition.
Weight-loss surgery reduces diabetes risk IANS, LONDON
W
eight-loss surgery could reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by around 80 percent in obese people, says a study. More than 80 percent of adults with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. “Our results suggest that bariatric (weight loss) surgery may be a highly effective method of preventing the onset of diabetes in men and women with severe obesity,” said Martin Gulliford, professor at King’s College London in Britain. We need to understand how weight loss surgery can be used,
together with interventions to increase physical activity and promote healthy eating, as part of an overall diabetes prevention strategy, he added. Using electronic health records from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, the researchers assessed the effect of contemporary surgical weight loss procedures on went one of three surgical proce- who had weight loss surgery were the development of diabetes. dures (laparoscopic adjustable band- recorded, compared with 177 in They identified 2,167 obese ing, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric control participants. adults without diabetes, who under- bypass) for weight loss from 2002 Compared with controls, diabetes onwards. Why scratching makes an itch worse WASHINGTON: Scratching an itch only makes it worse but you cannot resist that urge to scratch more? Blame it on the brain. According to a research, scratching causes the brain to release a hormone called serotonin which intensifies the itch sensation. “The problem is that when the brain gets those pain signals, it responds by producing the neuro-
transmitter serotonin to help control that pain,” said senior investigator Zhou-Feng Chen, director of the center for the study of itch at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. As serotonin spreads from the brain into the spinal cord, we found the chemical can “jump the tracks, moving from pain-sensing neurons to nerve cells that influence itch intensity”, Chen added. As part of the study, the researchers bred a strain of mice that lacked the genes to make serotonin. When those genetically-engineered mice were injected with a substance that normally makes the skin itch, the mice did not scratch as much as normal mice. But when the genetically-altered mice were injected with serotonin, they scratched as mice would be expected to in response to compounds designed to induce itching. “Itch and pain signals are transmitted through different but related pathways,” Chen maintained. Scratching can relieve itch by creating minor pain. But when the body responds to pain signals, that response actually can make itching worse, the team wrote.
(November 6-12) Libra An investor may wish to put dollars behind your dreams, or you could sell some property and make a lovely lump sum of cash. Inheritances, commissions, and royalties could also flow in.
Scorpio You won’t get involved in a plan unless you’re really into it because you know you’ll give your all — and how hard it is for you to back out once you’re in. Your intuition is always your best guide.
Sagittarius You could land a plum contract or extricate yourself from an undesirable client who is draining you with demands. Chaos begone! Get systematized and organized.
Capricorn Mercury remains in your tenth house of ambition until Saturday. Push ahead on your important career goals during the workweek. A powerful man could help with the cause.
Aquarius On the hunt for a new address? Don’t be surprised if that dream home listing shows up within two weeks of the full moon. If you’re already hunkered down in a well-appointed home, this would be the week to host a dinner party.
Pisces This week, you could stumble upon a “blessing” of fellow unicorns, the very friends you’ve been eager to find. Surprise! They could be closer to home base than you expected.
