My only fault is I’m a woman: Preity MUMBAI: Bollywood actor-businesswoman Preity Zinta has publicly opened up about her reason to file a police complaint against businessman and her former beau Ness Wadia on her Facebbook page. She took to her official Facebook page — Real Preity Zinta — to make the clarification on July 2 as she said she is “surprised” by some reactions to her complaint that Ness Wadia allegedly molested her. Ness Wadia provided a list of nine people present at the Wankhede Stadium May 30 in connection with the abuse case filed against him by Preity Zinta. The list has names of six women and three men who were present during the Kings XI Punjab versus Chennai Super Kings match when the alleged incident took place.

US targets LeT fronts, blames it for Herat attack on May 23 WASHINGTON: The United States has added various front organizations of the Pakistan based Lashkar-eTaeba (LeT) to its list of foreign terror organizations, saying the action would help cut off their funding and prevent future attacks. LeT which “has claimed responsibility for the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks was also “responsible for the May 23 attack on the Indian Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan,” the State Department said. The attack
was apparently aimed at derailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to reach out to India’s South Asian neighbors. “The designations help us cut off support and funding to LET so they can’t undertake future attacks,” State Department spokesperson Mary Harf told reporters. “Cooperation between the U.S. and India has already led to several Mumbai terrorists, including David Headley, being brought to justice,” she said. Born Daood Sayed Gilani to a Pakistani father and an American mother, the key plotter of the Mumbai attacks had changed his name to David Coleman Headley at the instance of LeT to avoid attention as he scouted targets for the attack.

With politicians, eminent personalities and activists baying for his head and the National Commission
for Women (NCW) seeking his expulsion from parliament, the Lok Sabha member, in a letter addressed to his party and the media, sought apology terming his comments a “gross error of judgment” and “deeply insensitive”.
‘I apologize to all of them, and particularly to all women in our society’
“Some remarks made by me have caused dismay and consternation. I apologize unreservedly for them. Whatever the provocation, those comments should never have been made,” the letter said, that by the comments, he had let down “my constituents and the people of Bengal”, his party, and “his family, including my wife and children and my parents, and my friends”. “I apologize to all of them, and particularly to all women in our society and to those in media who highlighted the issue,” said Paul.

Other sectors posting healthy gains were healthcare and consumer durables, oil and gas and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) scrip. The Sensex of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 25,660.57 points, was trading at 25,770.29 points around 12.30 p.m., up 253.94 points from the previous day’s close at 25,516.35 points.

Monsoon finally lashes Mumbai, Maharashtra MUMBAI: Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and large parts of coastal and western Maharashtra on July 2, providing welcome relief from the extended summer here. Though delayed by over three weeks — the normal date for onset of monsoon is June 10 — the steady downpour resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas and created disruptions in road and rail traffic within the city and outside. Traffic came to a halt or crawled at some sections in several part of the city.

Sinha’s pioneering biological research expedition has provided critical data about animal populations. Akhouri Sinha, adjunct professor in the department of genetics, cell biology and development at the University of Minnesota, was recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey, which named the mountain Mt Sinha, for his work he did as an explorer in 1971-72. The mountain was named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) and the U.S. Geological Survey. Sinha was a member of a team that catalogued population studies of seals, whales and birds in the pack

The “Durbs” would just swing their heads from left to right while speaking Charous. “This is a dialect we came up with combining English, Hindi and Afrikaans”, Ishwar Sookraj, a Durban resident, told IANS. “We use it when we get together and when we want to talk about something of our own like family issues or business. It is so convenient because it is our unique identity.” Terrence Kommal, chief executive of Ayush Healthcare of Pretoria, showed the unique character of the community when he planned his wedding in the traditional Indian way as seen in movies.

ISIS seizes key Syrian town The Al Qaeda splinter group starts advancing towards al-Shahel town, a stronghold of the Nusra Front, in the eastern Syrian countryside of Deir al-Zour IANS, BAGHDAD/NEW DELHI
T
he Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), an Al Qaeda splinter group, on July 1 seized a strategic eastern Syrian town along the Iraqi border following days of intense clashes with rival jihadi group. The ISIS captured Bukamal town in Syria’s Deir al-Zour province after an “intense” battle with the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, Xinhua reported citing the London-based watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The ISIS has started advancing towards al-Shahel town, a stronghold of the Nusra Front, in the eastern Syrian countryside of Deir alZour, the observatory said. The Nusra Front and the ISIS have been fighting since early this year. Their battles have claimed the lives of more than 7,000 insurgents and civilians since the beginning of 2014 in northern and eastern Syria, according to the Observatory.
Russia regrets Kiev’s ceasefire decision MOSCOW/KIEV: Moscow “deeply regrets” Kiev’s decision to call off ceasefire in Ukraine’s eastern regions, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on July 1. The decision has undermined “important joint diplomatic actions” of Russia, Germany and France over the Ukrainian crisis, Moscow said following a phone conversation between foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France late on June 30, Xinhua reported. “There is an impression that the changing of Kiev’s position happened in contradiction with the position of the European Union’s leading members,” the
statement said. During the phone talks, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin discussed steps to implement President Petro Poroshenko’s peace plan with his three counterparts and necessary steps to extend the ceasefire. The Ukrainian president announced a week-long ceasefire by the government forces June 21 to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, and later extended it to June 30. However, Poroshenko decided not to extend the ceasefire in the violence-hit regions. The Ukrainian troops resumed military offensive against insurgents in the eastern regions on July 1.
India priority for diplomacy: China
US deploys more troops in Iraq WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said that about 200 troops arrived in Iraq to protect the US embassy in Baghdad amidst fierce fighting in the war-torn country, a media report said on July 1. The new troops, who
arrived on June 29 and June 30, will provide security for the embassy, the Baghdad airport and other facilities in Iraq. The deployment includes “a detachment of helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles,” said a top US official.
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that India is a priority for China’s foreign policy and both the nations should work to develop together, media reported on July 1. Describing India as a strategic partner during the course of a meeting with visiting Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari here on June 30, Xi said both sides should grab the opportunity for joint development, including promoting the construction of an economic corridor through China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and India, the China Daily reported.
Meanwhile, Ansari has come back to India after a five-day trip to China, during which he attended a function commemorating the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Panchsheel agreement between the two countries. Ansari said the world was large enough for the rise of both India and China, which view each other as partners for mutual benefit and not as rivals. India would like to properly handle differences and problems with China, he said. Earlier on June 30, Ansari and Chinese Vice-President Li Yuanchao held extensive talks.

Sushma concludes B’desh visit IANS, DHAKA
I
ndia’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj concluded her three-day-visit to Bangladesh on June 27 after offering prayers at the historic Dhakeshwari Mandir here for better ties between the two countries. “I came to Bangladesh with an open mind. Good relations exist between India and Bangladesh and the relationship will get better. I am trying to resolve all the issues coming in the way of our ties,” Sushma Swaraj said while interacting with devotees at the temple. She also met Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia at Dhaka’s Hotel Sonargaon, bdnews24.com reported. During the 40-minute meeting, Zia reportedly “complained” about the state of democracy in Bangladesh. Swaraj told Khaleda that the new Indian government wanted to emphasize on a relationship without favoring any particular political party or a government in Bangladesh. BNP’s standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan and vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury termed the meeting “successful”. “The issue of lack of democracy in the country came up in the meeting. This so-called parliament does

not reflect the people’s will,” Moyeen Khan said. “The external affairs minister is shortly departing from Dhaka after what we feel has been a fruitful and successful visit,” Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said. Sushma Swaraj sent out a strong message that her government would build upon the momentum of the relations between the two countries. She left for New Delhi on a special Air India flight around 1.30 p.m. from Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport after being seen off by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md. Shahidul Haque.
India to extradite Nur Hossain DHAKA: India has agreed to send back Nur Hossain, the prime suspect in a multiple-murder case in Bangladesh, Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali told parliament on July 2. Replying to a query from Jatiya Party member Pir Fazlur Rahman, the minister said: “The matter was discussed during the recent visit of Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. The Indian government has agreed to extradite him.” Hossain and his two accomplices were arrested June 15 from an apartment at Baguiati, close to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. A councillor in Bangladesh’s Narayanganj and prime accused in the murder of seven people, Hosain has been booked under the Arms Act and Foreigners Registration Act for illegal trespass into Indian territory without valid travel documents and for illegal possession of a weapon. All three are currently in police custody. Hossain’s arrest was made in India after the seven murders in Narayanganj that shook the country.
Lankan prez visits violence-hit areas COLOMBO: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited areas hit by communal violence and assured people that perpetrators will be brought to justice, the President’s Office said on July 1. Buddhist-Muslim violence erupted June 15 in the southern tourist hot spots of Aluthgama and Beruwala, Xinhua reported. The violence was sparked by the group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) or Buddhist Task Force holding a rally in the area. Following the rally where inflammatory speeches were made, mobs went berserk and torched dozens of houses and shops in the area.
Curfew had to be imposed for nearly three days before the situation could be brought under control. President Rajapaksa has repeatedly pledged to take legal action against perpetrators of ethnic clashes and in several public speeches called on citizens to excise restraint. “We will bring the people who caused this harm to justice,” he assured residents, requesting them to support repair efforts carried out by the army. Last week the government allocated 200 million rupees ($1.5 million) to repair and reconstruct shops and houses of both Muslims and Buddhists damaged in the clashes.
Over 400 militants killed in Pakistan ISLAMABAD: At least 412 militants and 17 soldiers have been killed so far in the military operation against terrorists hiding in the country’s north-western tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, the Pakistan army said on June 30. According to the statistics released by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a mouthpiece of the Pakistan army, as many as 376 terrorists have been killed in the restive tribal region of North Waziristan, an area believed to be the last safe haven of militants in Pak-
istan, Xinhua reported. Security forces have also killed 36 militants in the tribal region of Khyber Agency, an area adjacent to the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Army launched a comprehensive operation named “Zarb-eAzb” against foreign and local militants, hiding in sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal region a week after the terrorist attack on the country’s busiest airport in the southern port city of Karachi.

Skirting controversy:
Goa minister triggers outrage Goa PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar wants to ‘ban bikini culture’; evokes widespread protests; Congress sends pink mini-skirt for the minister IANS, PANAJI
G
oa’s Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar has demanded a ban on young girls wearing short skirts to nightclubs, calling it a threat to “Goan culture”. His comment Tuesday triggered outrage in Goa as well as across the country. Dhavalikar, a cabinet minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government, told reporters on June 30 night that women wearing revealing clothes to night clubs and beaches often led to crimes in society. “Young girls wearing short skirts in nightclubs are a threat to the Goan culture. This habit of young girls wearing short dresses everywhere
does not fit the Goan culture. What will happen to it if this continues? We should not allow this. It should be stopped,” he said.
US daily blames ‘sand mafia’ for Beas tragedy IANS, WASHINGTON/SHIMLA
L
ess than a month after 24 students of an engineering college from Hyderabad were swept away in Himachal Pradesh’s Beas river, a US daily on July 2 blamed the “sand mafia” for the tragedy. “Millions of Indians have gazed in horror at videos showing 24 cheerful engineering students wading in a tranquil stretch of the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh last month and then being swept to their deaths as the waters around them surged,” the New York Times said in editorial “Erosion of Trust in India”. The water, it said, was released from a dam upstream, apparently to deposit sand on the riverbed for easy mining. That release, and the drownings it caused, “have been attributed to the ‘sand mafia’, a nexus of corrupt officials and the sand miners they let loot
a basically free natural resource”. “An essential ingredient in cement, sand has seen its value soar along with the fortunes of India’s equally corrupt construction industry,” the editorial added. BJP leader and former two-time chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal blamed Virbhadra Singh-led state government for promoting mining mafia. “I visited the spot next day after the tragedy (June 8). A number of link roads along the river were visible there. My question to the government is that who has constructed those link roads,” Dhumal on July 2 told IANS over phone. Even at the accident site in Thalot in Mandi district, a majority of engineering college students, who were on a holiday trip to Manali, used one of these link roads before they were caught unawares by the surging waters June 8.
Chennai building collapse toll goes up to 16 CHENNAI: The toll in the collapse of an 11-storey building in Chennai has gone up to 16, while 22 people have been injured, said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on June 30. In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa announced an increase in solatium to the families of the dead belonging to Tamil Nadu by `500,000 to `700,000. The under-construction residential building in Moulivakkam area in Porur collapsed on June 28
trapping over 70 people. Citing the magnitude of debris on the site, a fire service official said it would take at least another day to clear it.
The minister also requested women not to drink “because it is not good for their health”. Expectedly, the minister’s comments triggered outrage on July 1, with the Opposition as well as women’s rights groups accusing Dhavalikar of moral policing. The Congress in Goa is planning to present the minister with a mini-skirt in protest. “Let him see for himself. We are sending him a brand new mini-skirt. Let him see for himself that popular party clothes have very little to do with disrespect to one’s culture,” Congress spokesperson Durgadas Kamat said. Several women’s rights activists in Delhi have come out strongly against Dhavalikar’s statement. Kavita Krishnan of the All India
Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) said such politicians should improve their culture first before telling others how to behave. Dhavalikar’s comment comes on the heels of a similar statement by Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik, who wants to start a unit in Goa ostensibly to stop women from wearing short skirts, to end the “culture of drugs, sex and nudity”, and to preserve “Indian culture”. Dhavalikar, a member of a regional party called the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, also said he agreed with the arguments made by Muthalik, whose group came into the limelight after its members attacked young men and women for drinking alcohol in a Mangalore pub.

Kerala nurses stuck in a basement in Iraq THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 46 Kerala nurses stranded in Iraq’s Tikrit town are spending their time in a basement of a building within the hospital campus where they worked, according to a source. One can easily make out from sounds in the background and around them that they live in a basement in constant fear. They do not know whether the rebels or the government controls their city, a person who did not wish to be identified and in touch with the nurses told IANS. “The nurses said they were offered rice and pulses on Monday. (June 30). They cooked their food thereafter. They said they also got water,” said the person. The nurses who used to speak to a few media personnel from here, now do not attend their calls. The nurses have some idea about who controls Tikrit, the hometown of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, as there were reports about bombings in the place. On Sunday evening, one bomb landed just about 150 metres away from where they were staying earlier, before moving into the basement of another building on June 30.

ifteen villagers were burnt to death and 30 injured on June 27 as a huge fire and deafening explosions caused by a suspected leak engulfed a Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) gas pipeline in Andhra Pradesh. Four seriously injured peosons succumed to injuries later taking the death toll in the tragedy to 19. The central government ordered a probe and announced ex-gratia payment of `200,000 each to the next of kin of those killed. As flames several meters high leapt from the pipeline passing
through Nagaram village in East Godavari district, several of the villagers jolted out of sleep by the blasts failed to escape the blaze. The dead include three women and three children. Officials said the fatalities could rise as the con-
dition of 15 of the injured was said to be critical. The fire, caused by suspected leakage from the 18-inch pipeline of GAIL India Ltd, devastated the village near the Tatipaka refinery of the Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). “The fire caused massive losses. Coconut trees and other crops in over 10 acres were reduced to ashes,” said Finance Minister Y. Ramakrishnudu. President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and grief on the tragedy. President said he was “extremely saddened” to learn about the accident.

will take on South American giants Argentina. The match had a cracking start with Belgium almost scoring within two minutes. Kevin de Bruyne ignited a great move from Belgium with a giveand-go with Dries Mertens on the near side. The game was played almost entirely on the U.S. right flank where Jan Vertonghen and Eden Hazard threatened going forward, but Belgium were vulnerable at the back from American counter attacks. After a slow first half, the pace of the game picked up in the second. Belgium slowly took control of the game and created chances after chances. American goalie Howard was the difference between the scoreline remaining goalless and Belgium scoring a couple of goals.

fixing reports in World Cup
RIO DE JANEIRO: FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has expressed concern over match fixing in international football. In an interview with Brazilian television channel Sportv, Valcke said there was no way of knowing if games played during the World Cup had been manipulated, reports Xinhua. “It exists and it’s something that we are not going to eliminate hundred percent,” the governing body’s World Cup chief said.
Chiseling replied to the 27-yearold by urging FIFA to reassess the severity of the penalty, which also includes a nine-match ban from competitive international matches.
“It happens at the highest level and at the lower levels. What we can do is control legal betting. We work with two companies that monitor this around the world. But it’s very difficult to fight against what is done behind the scenes.” Valcke’s comments came after German magazine Spiegel claimed the Group A match between Cameroon and Croatia June 18 was fixed. The magazine alleged that Cameroon agreed with a betting ring before the match to lose 4-0. Days later FIFA revealed the clash between Cameroon and Brazil June 23 was at risk of being rigged. Media reports said alarm bells rang due to Cameroon’s prior elimination from the tournament and reports of conflict within the Indomitable Lions’ team. FIFA official Jerome Valcke

I get paid very well, have no complaints: Kareena
Actor says there is no pay problem for her in the industry; she is well-paid IANS, MUMBAI

ctor Kareena Kapoor, who has worked with some of the biggest banners, says that she has no complaints about the remuneration structure in the film industry as she is “paid really well”. While actors like Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra feel there is disparity in the wage system compared to actors in Bollywood, Kareena shares a different opinion. “I get paid very well and I have no complaints. If it’s a big budget film, they can afford and what works for another actress might not work for somebody else,” the actor told in a group interview. “I feel each and every actor is different. For example, I can never do The Dirty Picture. I don’t have that courage and boldness but for me it’s a challenge to be a part of Golmaal 3 and still have a great role. It’s an honor for me to be a part ‘It’s an honor for of Singham and that works for me to be a part me. It’s unfair of Singham and to draw any that works for comparisons,” me. It’s unfair to she added. The 33draw any year-old was of comparisons’. different opinion in the year 2012 when at an eventhe shared how Vidya’s Award-winning performance in the 2011 released film The Dirty Picture has given actors the hope for a brighter tomorrow in the film industry. It was during that time Kareena said that she will fight for “equal pay cheques” for both actors and actresses.
When Ayushman got rejected for TV show MUMBAI: It was a surreal moment for VJ-turned-Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana when he was called upon to mentor the contestants in the upcoming season of “India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj”. He says that it was the same show that rejected him many years ago when he came for audition. The 29-year-old, who came into the limelight after winning the second season of “MTV Roadies”, recollects how in 2003 he was rejected for the show just because of his unconventional looks. I was this nerdy looking thin guy not six feet tall conventional hero. But that was ten years back,” he added.
Romance has no age bar, says Vidya Balan IANS, MUMBAI

ctor Vidya Balan, who will be seen romancing a young actor Ali Faizal in forthcoming film Bobbby Jasoos says, “Romance has no age no bar. I don’t think age has anything to do with chemistry. I have worked with Nasser sir in Ishqiya as well. It’s all about getting into the character.” Bobbby Jasoos is directed by Samar Shaikh and is co-produced by actress Dia Mirza and her beau Sahil Sangha. The film will hit th eatres on July 4. The actror, who is known for doing women centric films, has so far worked with some of the known faces of Bollywood, including Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham.
‘Ek Villain’: deeply flawed, fatally self-defeating Film: “Ek Villain”; Cast: Siddharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh; Directed by Mohit Suri; Rating: ** ½
S
iddharth simmers and scorches the screen with his implosive one man against the world act. As a loner on a rampage after the love of his life is killed, he brings to the table a certain intensity which unfortunately, in this case, can only go this far and no further. We are looking at a film that is deeply flawed and fatally selfdefeating. Much was expected from director after “Aashiqui 2”. Alas, Suri chooses to wallow in unnecessary and at times prolonged brutality rather than focus on the tender love story between the seething brute and the bubbly babe. Not that there is anything new to offer in the love story. The silent indignant loner and the gregarious chirpy girl next door...haven’t we seen Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri take those two characters to the acme of perfection in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Mili”? ”Ek Villain” is “Mili” over-heaped with a chaos of havoc, mostly uncalled-for and sometimes viciously out of place. The action sometimes borders on the utterly bizarre. Luckily, this incoherent serial killer is played by Riteish who interprets the character with more cogency than it
demands. Suri diminishes the brutality of the serial offender by offsetting it with the love story between the criminally inclined introvert (Siddharth) and the sunshine girl (Shraddha) who insists on telling criminally unfunny jokes. Shraddha’s eyes speak volumes. So unfortunately does her mouth in this film. How I wish our cinema would stop equating volubility with vivacity. More regrettable are the plot’s mood swings. In spite of the tragic overtones the love story never quite acquires the wings that you’d expect a romance between two such goodlooking people. In the second-half when Siddharth and Riteish do a farcical face-off replete with the most atrocious dialogues and scenes that make them look like two school boys fighting over who’s larger. One of the turning points in the story when Siddharth’s character befriends his wife’s killer’s little son in a church, is such a wildly rare shot in the dark, you wonder what the director was thinking! In trying for a merger of mayhem and emotions the film finally falls apart like the shattered pieces of a broken heart. We expect so much and get so little. That’s life.

LEFT IN THE LURCH, BUT NO MORE C BY MAHESH TRIVEDI
ASE 1: Highly-educated Ria Parikh left her lucrative job in a topdrawer information technology company in Ahmedabad inthe western Indian state of Gujarat to marry a non-resident Indian, an engineer, and settle in the United States. But soon she realized that her husband was not a technocrat but an unlettered ordinary mechanic and an alcoholic at that. CASE 2: Just three months after Kalpana Shah, daughter of a Surat diamantaire, tied the knot with a Singapore doctor, the 29-yearold pregnant woman is desperate to return to India. She is being physically tortured by her hubby and in-laws for more dowry from her well-heeled father and is being beaten black and blue day after day. CASE 3 : For cash-strapped Mita Patel’s family, every was hunky-dory for a year after her internet romance with a London marketing executive led to the altar. Six months ago, the couple came to the Patels’ one-room-kitchen home in Vadodara in Gujarat but the man played the vanishing trick after two days. Well, for distressed Gujarati women like Ria, Kalpana and Mita (not their real names), now there is some light at the end of the tunnel. They will be provided free round-the-clock legal help by the newly-launched Non-Resident Gujarati (NRG) Centre, an alliance between the Gujarat government and the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). Indeed, ever since the NRG Centre opened in Ahmedabad a few months ago, harried wives and young mothers have been making frantic calls from abroad and their worried parents and relatives in Gujarat have been rushing to its golden-hearted chairman Kulin Patel for useful advice and early end to their pitiable plight that has made them a laughing stock in Indian society. During the November-to-February period when many of the 6.5 million Gujaratis among the 25 million non-resident Indians (NRIs) visit their home state every year, at least six NRG women also met him and narrated their tale of woe while weeping like a child. Patel, a former Indian High Commissioner to Uganda and Ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi, told Hi India that a majority of cases were related to cheating or the husband deserting the wife for different reasons like

dowry and his extra-marital affair. Says Patel: “Many men get married because their parents want them to, and abscond right after the wedding. In some cases, he runs off because he is having an affair with somebody else. In other cases, the couple comes to the city for a holiday after a year and the husband finds some excuse to fly back alone. The wife, in most cases, is left in a very helpless situation”. Patel has formed an experts’ panel comprising IPS officer Anil Kumar Pratham , seasoned Gujarat High advocate Gopinath Amin and reputed travel professional Manish Bhatt who go an extra mile to lead the downhearted complainants out of the sorry mess they are in. While Inspector-General of Police Pratham who also heads the women’s cell of the Gujarat police, instantly brings relief to the aggrieved victims by ordering investigations, often even taking the help of Interpol through the Central government, Bhatt, who has travelled across the globe, not only sorts out visa-related problems in a jiffy but also directs them to his countless bleeding-heart advocate friends based all over the world for consultations without any fee. According to Amin, who is aIso the chairman of the legal advisory committee of the GCCI, the victims seeking divorce or justice in some other way rarely keep in mind the Compulsory Registration of the Marriage
HELP AT HAND In order to check fraudulent NRI marriages and prevent Indian women from being deserted by their husbands abroad, the Indian government has taken a series of steps over the years. The federal ministry of external affairs has set up a cell in each mission abroad to help victims of fraudulent NRI marriages. For providing information about legal remedies, the Centre has launched a campaign which will help the brides approach authorities if they are deserted by their spouses abroad. The Overseas Indian Affairs ministry has launched the educational-cumawareness campaign for the Indian brides getting married to NRIs and published a guidance pamphlet on ‘Marriages to Overseas Indians’. The pamphlet has been made available in English, Hindi, Telugu,
Malyalam and Punjabi. Also published is a booklet in English containing information on safeguards available to women deserted by their NRI spouses, legal remedies available, authorities that can be approached for redress of grievances and NGOs which can provide assistance. The same has also been posted on the ministry’s website for the benefit of people. The Ministry has also made a scheme for providing legal assistance to Indian women deserted by their overseas husbands. It provides an assistance of $3000 in developed countries and $2000 in developing countries through Indian Missions for filling cases in the local courts or for legal counselling through the NGOs empanelled with Indian missions.

Act 2012, and never conduct a thorough background check of the groom. “The women’s family feels that the inlaws-to-be will be offended if they ask for the groom’s details but they must know the complete address, contact numbers of at least two friends who live within the area and one contact number of his colleague”, explains Amin adding that most of the times the girls are very young and unaware of the laws in a foreign country. But the NRG Centre, which organized two seminars in Anand and Mehsana recently, has been creating awareness among Gujaratis about the possible dangers of NRI marriages and distributes literature giving useful tips. Ramesh Rawani, father of a woman who has approached the NRG Centre to recover Rs 2.5 million paid as dowry from her husband, told
this correspondent that the process of seeking justice for a woman was very complicated as the Indian law did not apply to NRIs. Says another parent, Parag Desai: “The deserted wives, in about 30 per cent of cases, live there all by themselves and struggle to find a way to come back. Most of them are unaware of the legal procedures and, in some cases, the American courts declare a divorce through video conferencing”. However, more people seeking an NRI groom will now benefit in Gujarat as, apart from Ahmedabad, NRG Centres have been set up in Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Anand and Mehsana and more are coming up soon in Navsari and Bhuj. (For more details, please contact Kulin Patel, NRG Centre chairman, on 9825026780 or 079 4006 9603)
FIGURE IT OUT Indian missions in five countries have received 179 complaints about fraudulent NRI marriages since 201011. According to data released in the Lok Sabha by Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi recently, 66 such cases were reported in five countries-New Zealand, Slovak Republic, China (Hong Kong), the UK and the US in 2012-13. In 2011-12 the total number of cases was 50 and in 2010-11, there were 45 such cases. In 2013-14, at least 15 cases have been reported so far in the UK and three in the US. Since 2009, the ministry has received 213 complaints of fraudulent NRI marriages from across India. As many as 386 complaints were received by the ministry in 2012-13 from Indian women who had been abandoned by their NRI husbands. Since its inception in 2009, the NRI cell of National Commission for Women has received as many as 1,316 complaints from Indian women deserted by their NRI husbands. -----------------------------------------------For women deserted abroad, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) of the Central government provides an assistance of $3000 in developed countries and $2000 in developing countries through Indian Missions for filing cases in the local
courts or for legal counselling through the NGOs empanelled with Indian missions. During 2008-09 to 2012-13, a total 101 women had received assistance under the scheme. In addition to this, the MOIA also disbursed ` 32,86,709 to NGOs and 77 women deserted abroad between 2008 and 2011. -----------------------------------------------Gujaratis number 6.5 million among the 25 million non-resident Indians settled across the globe. Gujarat is No. 2 in India when it comes to fraud by NRI grooms. According to an estimate, over 10% of the complaints were reported from Gujarat while the maximum cases were from Punjab. According to a paper published by New Jersey-based NGO, Manavi, there were 12,000 abandoned women living in Gujarat in 2004. -----------------------------------------------According to a 2007 study, an estimated 25,000 wives of NRIs have been deserted in Punjab. In 2008, in Punjab alone, at least 20,000 legal cases were pending against NRI husbands, presumably for abandoning their wives. -----------------------------------------------Over 20,000 Indian girls have not seen their husbands after their honeymoon.

CHICAGO ON-LINE VOTER REGISTRATION SUDHANSHUJI MAHARAJ: SOURCE SYSTEM - EASY, SECURE AND FASTER OF INNER STRENGTH FOR MILLIONS BY A STAFF WRITER
C
C
HICAGO (IL) -- Chicago Election Board Chairman Langdon Neal praised the Illinois State Board of Elections’ new online voter registration system, which is now linked to www.chicagoelections.com. Neal said these were the Top 10 reasons voters and taxpayers would like the system: (1) It’s so easy -- With a State Driver’s License or State ID, voters can register for the first time or update their name or address info. No printing, signing or mailing forms. (2) It’s accurate – Voter data is confirmed against the Secretary of State’s database. Plus, the electronic transfer of data eliminates the possibility of errant entry of data or misreading of hand-written information. (3) It’s secure – The prospective voter already has proven identity and date of birth to a government agency to obtain a State ID or Driver’s License. As a safeguard, the user must know the issuance date of the Driver’s License or ID card. (4) It’s still verified by mail – After a registration is processed, local election authorities still mail a verification to the new voters and voters who updated their name or address information. (5) It’s thorough – If a voter fails to include any required information, the system tells the user. The system also supplies the election authority with the voter signature clip from the Driver’s License or State ID. (6) It’s faster – Just ahead of an election, tens of thousands of paper forms might take two weeks to process. Electronic files will be
processed in a few days. (7) It’s green – This system eliminates the paper chase. (8) It’s proven – Illinois now joins many other states like Arizona, Indiana, Colorado, Utah and California that have already successfully deployed similar on-line voter registration systems. Data indicate that Democratic and Republican voters use the online system in the same proportions as pre-online voter registration. (9) It’s efficient – The automation cuts manual data entry. Arizona officials estimate it cost 83 cents per paper form, compared to 3 cents per on-line form. (10) It’s what voters want – In September 2011, the Chicago Election Board gathered more than 130 participants at a massive focus group, the “Voter Engagement Community Forum.” Participants told the Board that on-line registration needed to be a top priority. The Chicago Election Board passed along those recommendations and worked with lawmakers, the Illinois State Board of Elections, the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office and other election agencies to promote passage of the 2013 law that enabled the creation of the new system.

HOW TO GET FIT when you shop Shopping workouts are the latest exercise craze gripping fitness freaks pressing their way to stay fit. Shoppers can burn up to 800 calories during an average shop IANS, LONDON
I
t was the fictional character Carrie Bradshaw who so honestly admitted that shopping is in fact her cardio workout and that’s why she couldn’t make the switch to online shopping — so why not get yourself a workout in while you buy the essentials? Shopping workouts are the latest exercise craze gripping the nation with fitness fans squatting and pressing their way around in an attempt to stay fit, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Shoppers could be burning their way through up to 800 calories during an average shop. That means twice weekly shoppers can burn 1,600 calories a week, or 83,200 calories per year. Experts from website Promotionalcodes.org.uk have come up with some exercises for shoppers. n SQUATS: bending to the bottom shelf: Instead of bending over to reach the lower shelved items in the supermarket, try sitting back into a squat. Calories burnt: 51 calories in 10 minutes equivalent to one cookie n CALF RAISES: reaching up to the top shelf: When reaching for items on the top shelves, do some calf raises to strengthen the backs of your legs and shoulders. The exercise will also tone your calves. Calories burnt: 34 calories in 10 minutes equivalent to one treacle toffee. n ARM CURLS: with tins: Arm curls don’t have to just be restricted to lifting heavy weights in the

Women’s jewellery collection a treasure trove LONDON: Jewellery is a weakness of many women and a survey shows that British women of 40 years of age have a jewellery collection worth 6,000 pounds. The research, conducted by Vashi Dominguez, founder of the jewellery brand Vashi.com, has revealed that the typical value of a woman’s jewellery increases by 2,000 pounds every 10 years as they reach middle age. By the time she reaches 50, her jewellery is worth 8,000 pounds, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The collection generally includes up to 150 pieces with the most expensive item normally an engagement ring worth 3,000 pounds. The study also shows that only 33

gym, and can actually help improve your posture all whilst strengthening your arms. Calories burnt: 80 calories for 10 minutes work, equivalent to a chocolate digestive biscuit. n LUNGE: pushing the trolley: Pushing a trolley for an average 40-minute shop will burn 160 calories alone, which is the same amount as a large glass of rose wine. However, to help tone your legs, try performing lunges while
walking around the market and using shopping trolley to lean on. Calories burnt: 317 for a 40 minute shop or one cheeseburger n SIDE LUNGES: reaching into the chiller cabinet: Side lunges are a great exercise for working your side abdominals, thighs, bum and hamstrings all at same time. This doesn’t burn a lot of calories but is great for toning those muscles. Calories burnt: 20 calories or one mint.
LONDON: Timeless beauty is something that women of all ages aspire for. However it appears that money can’t buy qualities such as confidence and happiness. So, to achieve that flawless look, try out few home treatments that can help in getting the radiance within you. Beauty presenter and expert Naomi Isted gives out a few tips that one can easily follow while at home, reports femalefirst.co.uk. n Try some age old beauty superfoods: Your diet has an impact on everything so try to go back to basics like they did centuries ago. Follow a healthier diet full of fruit, vegetables and fish. n Washing face with hot water: When you’re washing your face, it’s always good to wash your face with warm water. n Try to replace the car for a walk: Leading an active lifestyle will have an impact on your overall well-being and state of mind. Before public transport everyone would have to walk therefore being active was part of their day.
This app can make obese people agile IANS, NEW YORK
I
f you are used to a sedentary lifestyle, this app can help you become a little active. This smartphone-based app can produce short-term reductions in sedentary behavior that may be effective in improving health. More sedentary time, regardless of physical activity levels, is associated with greater risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and mortality. “Almost everyone knows that
percent of the jewellery is regularly worn. The remaining two-thirds are left neglected in a jewellery box because just 9 percent of women sell or remodel unwanted pieces. “Many women don’t realize their jewellery box is such a valuable treasure trove. These findings prove the continual popularity of jewellery. No matter her age, women love the feeling new jewellery gives them,” said Dominguez. “They are consistently adding to their collections through their 30s and 40s. Women see fine jewellery as an investment they can enjoy for life. “Many affluent 50-year-olds are sitting on jewellery collections worth more than 40,000 pounds — far more than the average annual wage,” he added.
physical activity is important. But it’s not widely recognized that someone who runs five miles in the evening but spends the rest of the day sitting at a desk can be putting their health at risk,” said coresearcher Dale Bond from The Miriam Hospital, Rhode Island, in the U.S. “That smartphone you use so often throughout the day could now actually help to improve your health,” he added. Bond and Graham Thomas from the same institute worked
with their colleagues to develop a smartphone-based intervention to reduce the amount of time obese individuals sit or recline while awake. The smartphone app, “BMobile,” was tested in a study of primarily middle-aged women who were obese, although the intervention can be applied to those who are not obese. The app automatically monitored the time participants spent being sedentary, and after an extended period with no activity, prompted participants via a tone paired with motivational messages to get up and walk around for a few minutes.

Even at the accident site in Thalot in Mandi district, a majority of engineering college students, who were on a holiday trip to Manali, used one of these link roads before they were caught unawares by the surging waters June 8.

trapping over 70 people.

Death toll in GAIL pipeline blast touches 19 IANS, HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI
F
ifteen villagers were burnt to death and 30 injured on June 27 as a huge fire and deafening explosions caused by a suspected leak engulfed a Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) gas pipeline in Andhra Pradesh.
