“That seems to be his prime victims,” said LaCorte. There’s no evidence that he had inappropriate contact with any young girls. Dr. Kissore Devan says Rajyaguru often helped out with audio visual tasks at the temple. “And because of his background of IT and everything else, he was very helpful whenever people needed some audio visual stuff and he came and helped,” said Devan. “We are deeply hurt,” said temple member Dr. Bindukumar Nair. “We trusted him and he just cheated us. We lost all faith in him now.” Since the incident came to light, locks on the Temple doors have been changed and there are no more hidden cameras.

nited States President Barack Obama has defended the government’s new directives regarding monitoring of people who have been exposed to the Ebola virus, asking the public not to let themselves be influenced by “fear”, since progress is being made in halting the spread of the disease. If there was not a strong international response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the U.S. and many other nations could be in danger, Obama warned in a brief public appearance at the White House on October 28 before traveling to Wisconsin. He also said that American officials should not “just react based on our fears” by imposing policies that discourage more health workers from volunteering to travel to

Among the measures announced
by the CDC, people who have travelled to West Africa and had contact with Ebola victims would not be quarantined or have their movements restricted unless they show symptoms of the disease. The president noted that so far only two people have become infected with Ebola in the U.S. — Dallas hospital nurses Amber Vinson and Nina Pham, who cared for a Liberian man who had picked up the disease in West Africa and later died. Both nurses have been declared free of the virus after undergoing hospital treatment, along with seven other Americans who have been treated and have survived, Obama said. “This disease can be contained,” Obama said. “It will be defeated. he high school student who shot dead two of his schoolmates and wounded three others last week at a school in Washington state had invited them to join him in the school lunchroom where the shooting took place, according to officials. The Snohomish county police said on October 27 that the shooter sent text messages from his mobile phone to five students at Pilchuk secondary school to meet him at the school cafeteria. Several students from the school and some of Fryberg’s family members have indicated on social networking sites that the teen was upset over a romantic relationship. “It won’t last. It’ll never last” and “I should have listened. You were right. The whole time you were right,” were the last messages written by Fryberg on his Twitter account before he went on to shoot himself and his companions. Fryberg was described by his schoolmates as a popular person who was a member of his school’s American football team.
US concerned over Israeli decision on new homes WASHINGTON: The United States is “deeply concerned” by reports that Israel would build more settler homes in east Jerusalem, the state department has said. “Israel’s leaders have said they would support a pathway to a two-state solution, but moving forward with this type of action would be incompatible with the pursuit of peace,” state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a regular briefing on October 27. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to advance plans for 1,060 housing units in Jewish neighborhoods in east Jerusalem, a source in the prime minister’s Office confirmed to Xinhua on October 27. Psaki said U.S. embassy officials were engaging with the Israeli government on the issue. “We continue to make our position absolutely clear that

we view settlement activity as illegitimate and unequivocally opposed unilateral steps that prejudge the future of Jerusalem,” Psaki said. The spokeswoman, however, reaffirmed the strong relations between the U.S. and Israel,
saying the ties were “unshakable”. “There are times when we disagree with actions of the Israeli government,” she said. “It does not mean that we don’t have a strong and formidable relationship that continues.”
India set the pace for regulatory reform in South Asia in 2013/14, said World Bank report.
‘India leads South Asia in doing business easier’ IANS, WASHINGTON
A new World Bank Group report finds that India set the pace for regulatory reform in South Asia in 2013/14 India with 20 — the region’s largest reforms during the period. India was followed by Sri Lanka with 16 reforms while three countries — Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan —focused their efforts on adopting modern electronic systems to facilitate business activity. The Doing Business 2015: Going Beyond Efficiency report found that four of eight economies in South Asia implemented at least one regulatory reform making it easier for local entrepreneurs to do business in 2013/14. “Doing business is easier in economies with administrative efficiency and strong regulatory protections,” said Rita Ramalho, Doing Business report lead author,
World Bank Group. The report noted that in India a little over a decade ago, an entrepreneur seeking a loan to grow his business would have had little luck, because financial institutions lacked access to information systems to assess creditworthiness. Three of India’s regulatory reforms benefiting local entrepreneurs were in the areas of starting a business, getting electricity, and protecting minority investors, including through the adoption of the new Companies Act of 2013. India made starting a business easier by considerably reducing the registration fees, but also made it more difficult by introducing a requirement to file a declaration before the commencement of business operations, the report said. The report covering 189 economies worldwide, found that Singapore tops the global ranking on the ease of doing business.

Govt submits black money list Apex court hints it will not disclose the 627 names; investigation to end by March 31, 2015 IANS, NEW DELHI
TRACING THE BLACK MONEY
T
he central government on October 29 submitted to the Supreme Court names of the 627 people who are holding accounts in foreign banks revealed to it by the French government. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi handed over two sealed envelopes to the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu. Rohatgi said that half of these account holders are Indian residents and the other half are Non-Resident Indians. These accounts pertain up to 2006. He said that action has been initiated into the matter. Some of them have paid taxes while others are under investigation. He also told the court the Income Tax Act has been amended to extend the limitation period up to March 31, 2015, for recovering taxes from these account holders. Under the earlier provision, a limitation period for recovery of taxes was six years which in these cases came to an end in 2012. The court directed that the sealed envelopes containing 627 names, including correspondence with the French government, be given to Special Investigation Team (SIT) chairman Justice M.B. Shah and vice chairman Justice Arijit Pasayat. The SIT was set up by the apex court on July 4, 2011. The court said the SIT will move into the matter in accordance with

These are also known as stolen data and when the Indian government approached the Swiss authorities for assistance, they refused to help, saying that they don’t deal with stolen data. However, HSBC Bank said that if the Indian authorities get
an NOC from the account holders, then it would share the details. As a consequence, about 50-60 account holders gave their consent with NOC. Rohatgi told the court that the government of India has only one request that care should be taken that nothing should impede in getting information from these countries and others on foreign accounts in future.

War waged against IS jihadists Iraqi Kurdish force moves to help fight IS militants in Kobane IANS, BAGHDAD
A
group of Iraqi Kurdish fighters, known as Peshmerga, headed on October 28 to the Syrian border town of Kobane via Turkey to help local Kurdish people who have been struggling to fend off attacks by the extremist Islamic State (IS) militants in the besieged town, an official Kurdish website reported. The Peshmerga force flew from the airport of Erbil, capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, and headed to Turkey from where they will travel by land to Kobane, Xinhua reported citing the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a major Kurdish party in which Iraqi President Fuad Masoum is a leading figure. The Peshmerga move came after the Kurdish regional parliament agreed last week to send regional forces abroad to support Kurdish fighters combating the IS militants in Kobane, also known as Ayn alArab. The Parliament decision was made after it received a letter from the regional Kurdish President Masoud Barzani, in which he sought its approval to send regional

forces to support Kurdish fighters in Kobane. Earlier, Turkey said it has opened a passage to the besieged Syrian town of Kobane for Iraqi Peshmerga fighters so that they can help Syrian Kurdish fighters combat the IS militants. In a related development, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu rejected claims that he was not doing enough to end the jihadist assault. He said Turkey would only take part once the US-led coalition against IS had an “integrated strategy” that included action against the
forces of Syrian President Bashar alAssad. The Kurdistan Parliament authorized sending 150 Peshmerga to help defend the predominantly Kurdish Syrian town last week. It was unclear why their deployment was delayed. The Kurdish population in both Iraq and Syria is under significant threat because of the rapid advance by IS. US state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that America would “certainly encourage’’ the deployment of Iraqi Peshmerga forces to Kobane.
‘1 in 6 students face assaults in MIT’ NEW YORK: Nearly 17 percent of female and five percent of male undergraduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have revealed that they were sexually assaulted on the campus, said a survey. About 35 percent of the 11,000 graduate and undergraduate students on the campus participated in the survey, the New York Times reported. The survey asked about several forms of unwanted sexual contact, from touching to penetration, “involving use of force, physical threat or incapacitation”. Nearly 12 percent of women and six percent of men said
they had experienced the same kinds of unwanted sexual contact, but without force, threat or incapacity. When asked if they had been raped or sexually assaulted, only 11 percent of female and two percent of male undergraduates said yes.

Bangladesh to hang Jamaat chief DHAKA: Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, on October 29 called for a countrywide shutdown after its chief Motiur Rahman Nizami was handed down the death sentence for wartime atrocities committed during the country’s 1971 Liberation War, media reports said. The announcement was made on the party’s website shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka found Nizami guilty of leading the execution of intellectuals, mass killings, rape and loot during the nine months of bloodshed 43 years ago, the Daily Star reported. The tribunal found the 71-year-old Jamat leader guilty on eight out of 16 charges levelled against him in a historic trial that began almost four decades after Bangladesh’s war of independence. The Jamaat-e-Islami called the strike from 6 a.m. on October 30 to 6 a.m. October 31 and 6 a.m. November 2 to 6 a.m. November 4. The party rejected the court verdict, claiming that the government filed ill-motivated baseless cases against top Jamaat leaders in order to make the party leaderless. “Charges which have been brought against Nizami are totally false, fabricated and politically motivated.”
‘Million March’ comes a cropper in London IANS, LONDON
P
akistan’s efforts to stage a march against Indian human rights violations, with a million people on the streets of London proved to be a monumental failure. Far from a seven figure, the march’s attendance did not even reach five figures. One of the organizers claimed the march was “to protest against human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir”. They planned to submit a petition asking the British government “to impress upon India to resolve the Kashmir dispute”. A few thousand men, women in hijabs and even children waved Pakistani flags behind police barricades at the British capital’s Trafalgar Square. Barely a few days ago, the save place packed with audiences to
watch on-stage entertainment in celebration of Diwali. Only some of them assembled there walked down the thoroughfare of Whitehall towards Downing Street — the official residence of the British prime minister — for presenting a petition. “Unfortunately we do not provide crowd figures,” said London’s Metropolitan Police Service, popularly known as Scotland Yard. Unofficial Indian estimates put the gathering at no more than 2,000. Bilawal Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, briefly participated in the protest. Geo News, a Pakistani TV news channel, put out a report that “Indian agents” attempted to prevent Bhutto from taking part, without revealing the the source of the news.
COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said Rajapaksa will be able to contest for a third term in office as a result of the constitutional changes brought in by the government through the Parliament, Xinhua reported. The prime minister on October 28 confirmed that presidential election would be held January next year. The opposition, on the other hand, said that the incumbent presi-

I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come,” Obama said in a White House statement announcing Raji’s nomination with several other key posts. Bucking this trend, an Indian-American is contesting for the Illinois House of Representatives as a Republican. Krishna Bansal is contesting from the 84th district in a state in which the Democrats hold sway. Illinois is President Barack Obama’s home state. The city also became the first in the US to sponsor a Diwali celebration, complete with fireworks. High on Bansal’s agenda is a reform of the business climate in the state of Illinois. “Illinois ranks among the last in the country in job creation,” Bansal told IANS. Even neighbouring Midwest states like Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas are prospering, while businesses are moving out of Illinois, slowing job creation.

The truth will prevail,” he said. The ministers from Andhra claimed that Naidu with his vision, hard work and efficiency overcame electricity shortage in the state but
his counterpart in Telangana has the habit of politicising every issue and blaming others for his failures. Escalating the row further, KCR on October 25 declared that Telangana will continue generation of electricity at Srisailam. He charged Naidu with flouting the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act by denying Telangana its due share of electricity generated in the power plants. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief also announced that Telangana will challenge in the Supreme Court two orders of the undivided Andhra government relating to the water level to be maintained by the two states in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams. Andhra Pradesh has accused Telangana of using the water for electricity generation in violation of the two orders. KCR also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure that Telangana gets its due share of electricity as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act.

Modi’s success makes BJP a one-man party After the recent success in Assembly elections in two key states, Haryana and Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving his distinctive mark on political and other fields AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
I
n politics, the prime minister has brushed aside the earlier bypoll setbacks by his successes in Maharashtra and Haryana. Although the BJP failed to get a majority in the western state, it made a few points which the party probably wanted to make for some time. One was to cut the Shiv Sena down to size apparently because the BJP, and more specifically Modi, felt that the regional outfit did not deserve the earlier No. 1 position in the state after Bal Thackeray’s death. The calculation probably is that a spell out of power, or in a subservient position in the government, will fatally erode the Sena’s base, enabling the BJP to win over the entire Hindutva vote. In the process, Modi again administered a snub to L.K. Advani, who favored continuing the earlier ties with the Sena. But it isn’t only the Modi again party’s “senior citizen” administered a who was rebuffed. snub to Advani, Even Nitin Gadkari was at the receiving who favored end of a mild repricontinuing the mand because of the earlier ties with amateurish expressions the Sena. of support for his claim to be chief minister by some of his followers. After that, it took the union transport minister less than 24 hours to say that he was not interested in moving to Mumbai, thereby enhancing the prospects of the front-runner, Devendra Fadnavis, who will form the first BJP government in the western state. These events point to Modi’s penchant for disciplined conduct which is at variance with the lackadaisical way in which Indian political parties tend to function. Modi has also shown that he does not care much for the standard caste and community-based norms while selecting chief ministers. This deviation from set patterns was evident from the nomination of Manohar Lal Khattar as Haryana chief minister although he is not a Jat, a dominant community which gave the state its last two chief ministers, Om Prakash Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress. Modi is able to adopt such a non-conventional approach because of his awareness that the voters have chosen him for his development agenda and not because of what is known as “identity” politics based on caste and community. What these developments emphasize is that Modi has become the sole dominant figure in the BJP. Not since Indira Gandhi’s unquestioned primacy over the Congress between 1971 and 1977 has there been such a domineering personality in a party at the national level.

Stay energized post-festive season SAHANA GHOSH, NEW DELHI
W
hat better way to ease up on your tummy post the festive season than with some truly exotic and healthy beverages? Take your pick from nearly a century-old secret ‘sherbet’ recipe, fruit and herb infused yoghurt drinks (lassis) or concoctions of the cup that cheers — tea. With the overwhelming variety of the sweet and savory that Kolkata has to offer, thanks to the varied communities based here, foodies find it difficult to resist gourmet temptations, particularly during Durga Puja and Diwali. The hectic meet-andgreet schedule and rituals add to the woes. But in nooks and corners of the busting metropolis, there are places where health-conscious foodies can stop over for some detoxifying and energizing refills, till the next holiday season (Christmas and New Year) and binge-time begins. A stone’s throw away from north Kolkata’s College Street (home to book shops and two prestigious universities), tucked away in a hidey-hole is the 96-year-old Paramount juice and sherbet centre, famed for its daab sherbet or green coconut sherbet (a cold drink usually made with diluted fruit juices). The sherbet — a mix of raw coconut water, its tender sweet pulp and an essence — is a creation of renowned chemist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray. “The shop used to be the hideout of freedom fighters and selling sherbets used to be a front. Nihar Ranjan Majumdar, who was a freedom fighter and a friend of Ray, set this shop up
with him. “The green coconut essence used in the sherbet is a secret and the drink we serve has remain unchanged. The coconuts are specially sourced from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas,” Partha Majumdar, Nihar Ranjan’s grandson and shop manager, told IANS. “It is very popular among youngsters, most of whom are health conscious nowadays,” Majumdar added. Looking for something on the lines of smoothies and shakes albeit with an Indian touch?
Try the peppery Kadak Pudina Mirch ki Lassi (mint, green chillies with yoghurt) or the imaginative Mango Aur Tulsi ki Lassi (green mango, cumin and basil with yoghurt) at Funjabi Tadka, a specialty restaurant. The added ingredients help in adding fibre and enhancing digestion,” restaurant manager Santosh told IANS.

Sania and Cara were totally dominant in the first set, winning three of the four set points they earned while giving away nothing to their opponents. It’s been an amazing ride, an amazing journey,” Sania was quoted as saying by wtafinals.com. The India-Zimbabwe combine also had a much better percentage of points won on their serve than Hsieh and Peng, whose two double faults at crucial junctures of the
match also did not help them. Sania and Cara first teamed up at the end of 2013, winning their first two events together in Tokyo and Beijing. SINGAPORE: Four days after experiencing one of the heaviest defeats of her career, World No.1 tennis player Serena Williams got her revenge by crushing fourth-ranked Simona Halep of Romania 6-3, 6-0 to win her third straight WTA Finals title at the Singapore Indoor Stadium here on October 26. Serena endured her heaviest defeat in 16 years on October 22, losing 0-6, 2-6 to Simona in a women’s singles round robin match but brushed aside the disappointment to claim the event for the fifth time, a total bettered only by legendary Martina Navratilova thereby confirming to finish the year on top of the rankings. The American overcame a slow start to blow away Simona amid a whirlwind of winners. “She was playing so well at the beginning and I told myself to just relax and once I did that I started playing better and making my shots,” Serena was quoted as saying to wtafinals.com. “I lost to her a couple of days ago so I knew she was capable of playing

We only had a few practice sessions, especially with the weather interrupting. It is not the ideal preparation for an Indian tour but we will do our best to prepare

The winner’s cheque of $162,000 raised his season’s tally to $504,689 as he consolidated his second place on Asian Tour’s Order of Merit and narrowed the gap on leader David Lipsky of the U.S. Defending champion Hend lipped out a par putt from four feet on the 72nd hole as the roles reversed from last year’s edition where Lahiri was the runner-up. Nikhita’s song Ladio is already a chartbuster. “I’ve recorded with Rahman sir in the past, but this was my first title track. When I walked into his studio to record Ladio, I experienced the Oh my god! moment, but it lasted only for seconds because he doesn’t give his singers the time to get nervous,” Nikhita told IANS. Nikhita has also sung to Rahman’s tunes in movies such as Jab Tak Hain Jaan and Raanjhanaa, which were loved by the audience.

‘Poojai’: All action, no soul
G
opalakrishnan has written Poojai with the mindset that anything that comes from his camp will be lapped up by audiences, no matter how good or bad it is. After all, he’s the master of commercial entertainers such as Saamy and Singam. If you’ve followed his films over the years, it’s easier to predict Poojai from start to finish with eyes closed. Because of which you realize the director never tries to innovate with his films and usually sticks to a template he’s done to death. In his films, the hero is usually very close to his father or mother. In Saamy, Vikram was very close to

and their house is considered the biggest in their city. There’s always a reference about familial and financial status in his films. Here, Vishal is turned down by Shruti Haasan for the same reason. In Saamy, Vikram’s father is insulted by the heroine’s father on the basis of his economical status. Most commercial films are plagued by a serious problem for the need to include a romantic track. And most of these romantic plots make us wonder if falling in love is so simple. In Poojai, Shruti and Vishal break into a duet song after the former wipes some gravy off the latter’s shirt. At that exact moment, we hear Soori passing a funny comment (he has won her heart with a drop of gravy). — Haricharan Pudipeddi

ishal Bhardwaj’s Haider — a modern-day adaptation of Hamlet — won the People’s Choice Award in the Mondo Genre (world genre) at the ninth edition of Rome Film Festival here. Haider also had an Italian premiere on October 24. The film, produced by UTV Motion Pictures and VB Pictures, won the award on October 25. “It truly affirms our belief that good cinema can transcend boundaries and this award puts Haider on the global map,” Amrita Pandey, vice president and head of marketing and distribution — Studios, Disney India, said in a statement. Out of the seven films like A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (US), Quando Eu Era Vivo/ When I Was Alive (Brazil) and La Prochaine Fois Je Viserai Le Coeur/ Next Time I’ll Aim For The Heart (France), which featured under the genre, Haider was the only Asian film selected across the globe. This is for the first time that an Indian film has won the audience award in a non-specialized (non-focused on Asian cinema) wide-ranging international festival. For Bhardwaj, it is a proud moment. “Haider is a classic Shakespearean tale retold with Kashmir in India as its backdrop, it’s a story that we would like to take to the world and to get this award now is a proud moment for the entire team of Haider,” said Bhardwaj. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan, the movie saw a worldwide release on October 2.

‘SRK is not superstitious’ NEW DELHI: Since the 1990s, Shah Rukh Khan’s movies have been creating fireworks at the box office during Diwali festival. And the superstar’s latest Happy New Year (HNY) continued the trend by turning out to be a money-spinner. But King Khan rules out any superstition associated with the release date of his films. Movies like Baazigar (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Om Shanti Om (2007) all released during Diwali and all were runaway hits. Shah Rukh’s HNY released a day after the festival of lights and he says superstition has got nothing to do with it. “It is good to release films on a holiday,” he adds. “You get that extra benefit of a day off...I am lucky. The movies (that released during Diwali) have done well, but I am not superstitious like that. Any day is good if I get a good holiday,” SRK, whose Chennai Express released in August to coincide with Eid festival, told IANS.

$29K DONATED FOR CANCER PATIENTS

BY A STAFF WRITER
ONG BEACH (CA) -- The Susen Daniel Memorial Cancer Relief Fund raised $29,000 at their 29th Annual Banquet held recently at the Best Western Golden Sails Hotel Crystal Ballroom, which was attended by a crowd of over 275 from all walks of life. Mathew Daniel, chairman of the board of directors, in his welcome speech declared that SDM was a charity with only one mission: to help as many poor cancer patients as possible, and he proclaimed that the mission had been accomplished. SDM began with one patient and one hospital in 1985 and has become an organization that helps as many as 180 patients each year in four different hospitals, the Indian American added. He recalled that the organization was started when his wife Susen Daniel passed away of cancer in 1985. Thereafter, his daughter Sudha, who was a board member,
also died of cancer in 2002 just before her 34th birthday. Mathew Daniel expressed his utmost satisfaction at the support he has received from the younger generation that had almost taken over the organization. He further stated that the success of SDM was not possible without the personal commitment and dedication of all past and present board members. Daniel then introduced and thanked the current board: attorney Abraham Mathew, president; Jai Johnson, secretary; Sunil Daniel, treasurer; Ivy Thomas Mathews, accountant; as well as other directors Vinodh Bahluleyan, Dr. Sajini George, Jay Chandran Nir, Joseph Ouso, C.A. Phillipose, Priya Phillipose, Dr. Ravi Raghavan, Ravi Vellatheri, Sunil Warrier and Binoy Yohannan. Daniel said that a donation to SDM was not just a donation but was a gift to the deserving patients whom they had not seen nor had ever known.

FEZ PROJECT MAY DRAW YOUTH TO CLASSICAL MUSIC BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Acclaimed Sufiana virtuoso Zila Khan, and the young Faizan Khan have introduced a movement that promises to shed new light on classical and traditional sounds. Classical music has always been an integral part of the socio-cultural fabric of India. With a burgeoning young populace, there is a need to re-connect the youth with the rich musical tapestry of the Indian fabric. Although the current music landscape is dominated by Bollywood, EDM and Pop & Rock, it is indeed heartening to hear some popular Bollywood tracks feature powerful classical backdrops. This is where comes in The Fez Project, the brainchild of Zila Khan, one of India’s most prolific classical and Sufi singers, and her son Faizan Khan. Beginning with an album of 12 songs, The Fez Project will be established as a long-term digital brand that will release periodic music videos and tracks in a season-wise format. The objective of the project is to package and present Indian classical music in a way that the youth will connect with, imbibe, experience and enjoy. This is a concerted effort to bring back an art form that is increasingly at odds against the cacophony of varied global and more commercial sounds. For a while now, the youth has been either having a hard time understanding, or has just been shying away from their rich classical heritage.

EST ORANGE (NJ) – The police are searching for a man who stole a young boy’s Apple cell phone at knifepoint on October 16 night. The 13-year-old-boy was in the parking lot of the CVS drug store at 262 Main St. around 8 pm when he was approached by a man with a knife, said Sgt. William Mango.
“We aim to bring about a reconnection to our roots, particularly with regard to the youth”, said Zila Khan. “We plan to release music videos which merge classical music with genres popular today, like Beat-box, Electronic, Flamenco, etc. Tags like ‘remix’ and ‘fusion’ have become run-ofthe-mill and done-to-death. “We have been careful to ensure that we don’t dilute the quality of the songs, and yet marry the two genres while keeping the essence
and relevance of each intact”, she added. “We have several music festivals and music channels in India which are thoroughly promoting Bollywood music and now Indie music which is brilliant, but unfortunately no one is making an effort to revive classical. “And digital media is one of the most effective ways to reach out to a large audience, especially the youth. It’s high time that Indian Classical Music utilizes the power of the web and makes its presence felt”, said Faizan Khan. Watch out for weekly drops of each music video. The first video - ‘Chaap Tilak’, came out in September. Also listen for ‘Mai To Piya Se’, ‘Halka Halka Suroor Hai’ and more on each exciting drop. The Fez Project has plans in place to work with several upcoming names on the music landscape, and already generated preliminary interest from current industry stalwarts for planned collaborations.
CT men plead guilty: bribery scheme BY A STAFF WRITER

HITE PLAINS (NY) -- A Bangladeshi man and a US citizen have pleaded guilty in a White Plains federal court to bribery and fraud charges in a case in which a former FBI agent is also charged. Rizve Ahmed, aka “Caesar,” 35, of Danbury, Connecticut, and Johannes Thaler, 51, of New Fairfield, Connecticut, admitted to participating in a bribery scheme with Robert Lustyik, a former FBI special agent who worked on the counterintelligence squad in the White Plains Resident Agency. A US Department of Justice press release said Thaler was Lustyik’s friend, and Ahmed was an acquaintance of Thaler. Thaler and Ahmed pled guilty to one count of bribery and one count of conspiracy to commit honest services and wire fraud. Both face a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison, and are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Briccetti on January 23, 2015. According to the U.S. Department of Justice press release, the two admitted that between September 2011 and March 2012, Thaler and Lustyik solicited bribes from Ahmed, in exchange for agreement to provide confidential documents and information to which the special agent had access. Ahmed sought confidential law enforcement information regarding a Bangladeshi political
figure affiliated with a political party opposing Ahmed’s views. Ahmed requested the confidential information to locate and harm his intended victim and others associated with the victim. He also sought assistance in having criminal charges against a different Bangladeshi political figure dismissed. As part of the scheme, Thaler and Ahmed exchanged text messages, including some about a ‘contract’ the terms of which would require Ahmed to pay a $40,000 ‘retainer’ and $30,000 ‘monthly’ and, in return, Lustyik and Thaler would ‘give Ahmed everything they had and get the inside from the party. Lustyik and Thaler also exchanged text messages about how to pressure Ahmed to pay them additional money in exchange for confidential information. Lustyik and Thaler accepted at least $1,000 from Ahmed in exchange for the confidential FBI information, including a Suspicious Activity Report. Lustyik and Thaler schemed to obtain additional monthly cash bribes from Ahmed, in increments of tens of thousands of dollars, in exchange for additional confidential law enforcement information and for assistance in having criminal charges against a Bangladeshi political figure dismissed. Charges against Lustyik, the other defendant who was charged with Thaler and Ahmed, remain pending. Trial is scheduled to begin on November 17

PRINGFIELD, MASS., -- Almost three million Asian Indians in the United States celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, on Oct. 23. For the more than 300,000 Asian-Indian owned firms* in the U.S., the holiday takes on an added dimension, as the celebration marks the beginning of a new business year. To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali. In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth. It is said the goddess of wealth, known as Lakshmi, visits the homes of devotees on this day, and lamps light the way to welcome her. A MassMutual study** found that although 77 percent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 percent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies; only 46 percent have a formal

The vignettes explore critical business planning topics, such as passing ownership on from one generation to the next, preparing for the unexpected, the death of an owner, retaining key employees, and proper estate and retirement planning. Seminars addressing these topics critical to Asian Indian business owners were presented in the following cities across the country this Diwali: • Houston, Oct. 14 • Atlanta: Oct. 18 • San Jose, Calif.: Oct. 24

ECAUCUS (NJ) -- Local community members, both Indian and non-Indian, celebrated the Gujarati and Marwari New Year at an Open House hosted at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Secaucus, New Jersey, on October 24. The event aimed at giving the community a peek into the temple’s cultural practices and its community outreach efforts, a temple press release said. The Secaucus temple is the North American headquarters of the worldwide Maninagar Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan. The Open House was inaugurated by Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli and the Town Council with a traditional candle lighting ceremony. The Mayor also played some cricket with the Swamibapa Cricket Club. State Senator and North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, County Freeholder candidate Anthony Vainieri, and other community leader representatives attended the event and addressed the congregation to wish

The first presentation featured information on Hinduism, the Swaminarayan religion, the rise of the Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, and community activities. The second presentation shed light on how Indian New Year is celebrated

ASHINGTON, DC -- A sudden spurt in anti-Hindu hate crimes and vandalism incidents in a suburb of Virginia have led to local officials there posting a $21,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the culprits. According to authorities in Loudoun County, Va., since July 2014, there have been 17 reported instances of anti-Hindu graffiti and vandalism occurring in Ashburn, Va., and the area near Dulles International Airport. The county over the past few years has seen a significant rise in its Indian American population. “A majority of the graffiti has been written in black marker on exercise stations, park benches, a pedestrian tunnel and community signs,” according to the Loudoun County police. The graffiti read, “No Hindus allowed” and “No Hindus, by order of Mosby’s Rangers.” “I’ve been in this country for 14 years, and never once have I seen something like this, or been exposed to something like this,” says Indian American county resident Vidya Nair. “Loudoun is so diverse. You don’t expect to see it here. It is very disturbing that there are individuals who are willing to destroy private property and spew hate against our Hindu neighbors,” said Lebanon-born Virginia House of Delegates member David Ramadan. At a meeting with about 200 Indian Americans at a local community center, he added, “There is no room for such hate in our community.” “I was extremely encouraged by the community response to this event,” said Virginia attorney Jim Plowman. “With continued citizen involvement, I’m confident we’ll be able to put an end to these hateful acts and to see this to a just conclusion.”

A Gujarati cultural program followed with kirtan and discourses, a celebration with various musical instruments and a tree presentation by environmental activist Girish Mehta. The congregation then collectively watched the New Year blessings given by Acharya Shree Purushottampriyadasji Swamishree Maharaj, the current head of the Shree Swaminarayan Gadi. “Use this New Year to become a new person,” he told the audience. “The year changes and will continue to change but as long as we don’t change, nothing will change.” The event ended with a traditional feast.
Eight-month jail for groping woman on flight to Newark BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EWARK (NJ) -- A Louisiana man who admitted groping a sleeping woman during a Houstonto-Newark flight this year was sentenced to eight months in prison today. Devender Singh, 62, will also have to register as a sex offender, according to the terms of the sentence handed down by US District Court Judge Stanley Chesler. Federal prosecutors say that during a March 2 United Airlines flight, a woman in a window seat awoke to find Singh kissing her face while he had his hand inside her shirt. The woman pushed Singh off and told him to get away, then walked to the back of the plane and told a member of the flight crew what occurred. The police arrested Singh, an Indian national living in Baton Rouge, when the plane landed in Newark. In September, Singh pleaded guilty to a charge of abusive sexual contact. Singh’s arrest followed two similar incidents over the past two years. In August, Eun Jong Lee, 47, of Ithaca, N.Y., was charged with groping a woman on a Tokyo-to-Newark flight. And in January, Bawer Aksal, 48, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the sexual assault of a woman on a flight from Phoenix to Newark in August 2012.
Man held for spying on girls in temple

MHERST (NY) -- An Amherst man is accused of installing hidden cameras to spy on girls. Prakash Rajyaguru, 46, has been arrested for unlawful surveillance, and endangering the welfare of a minor. “What he has done is not what we expected out of him,” said Dr. Kailash Lall, president of the Hindu Cultural Society of WNY where Rajyaguru has volunteered for years. The Amherst police were called in August by a family who found a hidden camera in their home. The police then learned of another camera placed in another home of people Rajyaguru knew through the Temple. The police also found video from what
Prakash Rajyaguru appeared to be the changing room inside the Hindu Cultural Center in Amherst. Lt. Joseph LaCorte said it seemed to have centered on females between the ages of 11 and 13 years.

EXERCISE THE RIGHT WAY!

Only because the body can perform some exercises, doesn’t mean they are good for it, says an expert IANS, LONDON
I
t’s important to take precautions while exercising as it can lead to significant damage to the muscles and the joints. Let’s find out what moves exactly are doing this. Just because the body can perform certain exercises does not mean that they are good for it. Expert Greg Brookes takes a look
at some popular exercises and explains why they’re bad for us and offers an alternative. “There seems to be an epidemic, at the moment, of people in gyms and parks on a mission to totally destroy their body,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Brookes as saying. “First up, sit ups or crunches; posture is something that we all need to be aware of and for those who sit hunched in front of a com-

team of Australian researchers said that eating large amounts of fruit and vegetables can make you happier. The University of Queensland (UQ) study, involving more than 12,000 people, concluded that eating eight or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day improves mental well-being, Xinhua reported. UQ health economics researcher Redzo Mujcic told local radio that current guidelines on fruit and vegetable consumption were mostly focused on physical health, and not
on mental health. Mujcic’s study looked at people’s choices on fruit and vegetables, and rated these against their levels of satisfaction, stress and vitality. “Eating about five fruits and five vegetables (per day) makes us the happiest we can be in that case,” he told an Australian news channel.
A device to identify tipsiness NEW YORK: A device has been launched that lets drivers find out if they are intoxicated before they are nabbed by cops. Named Breeze, the 2.25-inch-long wireless device pairs via bluetooth to a smartphone app. The iOS version of Breeze syncs with Apple’s new HealthKit platform, which allows consumers to catalogue
their blood-alchohol level. If users record scores higher than the recommended level, the app triggers a ‘get home safe’ screen. Breeze also provides drunk users with the option to search for cabs and uses phone book contacts to let them phone a friend in case they need a ride. It also provides an option to search for hotels and restaurants, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. “This is really about consumer awareness and being able to make the right decision and learn more about yourself,” said Brian Sturdivant, vice president (marketing) of the California-based startup Burglinghame that created the device. — IANS
puter all day at work, the worst thing that can be done is crunching your body forward even more for a abs workout. “Crunches and sit ups only perform 50 per cent of the natural movement of the spine if you are performing them lying on the floor. If you are going to perform this exercise then at least crunch over a stability ball to get the full range of movement,” he added.
Brookes also says that deadlifts or single deadlifts are the safer alternative. Unprepared running is harmful, says the expert. “Over 3 times the bodyweight goes through each leg during every stride. In order to absorb this kind of shock the body must have good alignment and core strength” “The core stabilizes the pelvis to provide a solid platform for the legs to operate under. Sadly most
people have very weak core muscles due to inactivity and due to excess sitting most people also have bad joint alignment and stabilization from head to toe,” said Brooke. Hence, it’s important that if you want to start running, losing excess weight through diet and bodyweight exercises to improve core strength and joint stability would be a safer starting point.

P
unjabi dhabas are known countrywide for their rich and finger-licking food on the roadside. But it is also the lavish spread of their interesting names that makes them stand out. Dhabas — or roadside eateries — have been a popular attraction for decades. Most of them are popular for serving hot, spicy food. The common names that are associated with dhabas are ‘Lucky da Dhaba’, ‘Kakke da Dhaba’, ‘Pappi
da Dhaba’, ‘Sher-e-Punjab’ dhaba and others. Among the unique dhaba names that one comes across while travelling in northern India are ‘Ladoo ji da Dhaba’ near Jalandhar, ‘Pahalwan dhaba’, ‘Veerji dhaba’
and others. “Dhaba names are as much an eye-catcher and an attraction as is the food that they serve. While many of the dhaba names are common ones - those that you will find after every few kilometres — some are really unique,” Sunny Brar, a businessman told IANS. “Dhabas are a popular phenomenon, especially for travellers. The very mention of dhaba food lightens up people’s eyes,” Bhagwant Singh, a leading horticulturist of Punjab.

Mental illness doubles cardiac, stroke risks Patients who use psychiatric medications are likely to contract heart disease, says a recent study IANS, TORONTO
P
eople facing mental health challenges are twice as likely to contract heart diseases, found a research. Psychiatric medications, unhealthy activities and access to health care are three major factors that account for the increased risk, the findings showed. “This population is at high risk, and it is even greater for people with multiple mental health issues,” said lead author of the
study Katie Goldie from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto in Canada. For the study, the researchers used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey. The study included people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, major depressive and anxiety disorders. Among the psychiatric drugs examined were antipsychotic, antidepressant, benzodiazepine and mood-stabilizing medications. The researchers found that people who have had a mental
health disorder at any point in their life were twice as likely to have contracted a heart disease or experienced a stroke. Again, those who have not developed a heart disease or experienced a stroke are more likely to be at a high, longterm, risk of developing cardiovascular disease,. People who used psychiatric medications were twice as likely to contract heart disease and three times as likely to experience a stroke compared with those not taking these medications.
Cocoa likely to reverse age-related memory decline
How body regulates weight loss

hormone seen as a popular target to develop weight-loss drugs works by directly targeting the brain and triggering previously unknown activity in the nervous system, researchers have found. The fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) hormone has been a key target for developing weightloss drugs because the protein increases energy expenditure, causing the body to burn calories. But how the hormone worked was not known until now. The team at University of Texas’ Southwestern Medical Center dis-
covered that FGF21 acts directly on the brain, activating another hormone called corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). CRF then stimulates the nervous system, activating brown adipose tissue which generates body heat by burning fat.
“FGF21 is known for playing a role in weight loss. In the new study, we show that FGF21 also acts directly on the brain to regulate obesity,” said Steven Kliewer, professor of molecular biology and pharmacology.
ge-related memory decline can be reversed with a little alteration in your diet, specifically the inclusion of cocoa flavanols, showed a research. Flavanols are naturally occurring antioxidants and are also found in tea leaves and in certain fruits and vegetables. The study provides the first direct evidence that one component of agerelated memory decline in humans is caused by changes in a specific region of the brain - the dentate gyrusa — and that this form of memory decline can be improved by a dietary intervention.

“When we imaged our research subjects’ brains, we found noticeable improvements in the function of the dentate gyrus in those who consumed the high-cocoa flavanol drink,” said lead author, Adam Brickman, associate professor at the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the US. In the study, 37 healthy volunteers, ages 50 to 69, were randomized to receive either a highflavanol diet (900 mg of flavanols a day) or a low-flavanol diet (10 mg of flavanols a day) for three months. The high-flavanol group performed significantly better on the memory test.
