Donald Trump’s latest: Coronavirus a very bad ‘GIFT’ from China

Donald Trump has made repeated statements in the past, blaming China for the pandemic and suggesting that he may seek damages from Beijing over the pandemic

PM Modi not in ‘good mood’ over Ladakh standoff with China, says Donald Trump “I like your prime minister a lot. He is a great gentleman,” the president said. “Have a big conflict …India and China. Two countries with 1.4 billion people (each). Two countries with very powerful militaries. India is not happy and probably China is not happy,” he said when asked if he was worried about the border situation between India and China.

US Congress approves bill authorising sanctions against China over mass incarceration of Uighurs

Trump says he is liked more in India than in US HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington D.C. [USA],(ANI): The US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved legislation calling for sanctions on Chinese officials deemed responsible for the oppression of Uighur Muslims. The Uighur Human Rights Act, which has been sent to the White House for President Donald Trump to veto or sign into law, was passed by a 413-1 vote on Wednesday and came hours after Secretary of State Mike Pomp notified Congress that the administration no longer considered Hong Kong autonomous from China, Al Jazeera reported. The bill calls for sanctions

against those responsible for the repression of Uighurs and other Muslim groups in China’s Xinjiang province, where the United Nations estimates that more than a million Muslims have been detained in camps.

It singles out the region’s Communist Party secretary, Chen Quanguo, a member of China’s powerful Politburo, as responsible for “gross human rights violations” against them.

Washington D.C. [USA], May 29 (ANI): US President Donald Trump while speaking with reporters at the White House on Thursday said that he is more liked in India than the media in his own country --the United States. “I know. And they like me in India. I think they like me in India certainly more than the media likes me in this country, “ Trump told reporters at his Oval office. “And I like Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi). I like your prime minister a lot. He’s a great gentleman. A great gentleman,” he added further while briefing the reporters. But when asked over ties between India and China, the US President said, “They have a big conflict going with India and China.

HiIndia Newsdesk An estimated 2.1 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week despite the gradual reopening of businesses around the country, bringing the running

total since the coronavirus shutdowns took hold in mid-March to about 41 million, the government said Thursday. The figures underscored the continuing damage to businesses and livelihoods from the outbreak that has now killed at least 100,000 people in the US, more than the number of Americans lost in the Vietnam and Korean wars combined, and more than 33 times the death toll on 9/11. The US unemployment rate was 14.7 per cent in April, the highest since the Depression, and many economists expect it will near 20 per cent in May.

HiIndia Newsdesk Twitter has flagged one of US President D o n a l d Tr u m p’s tweets for “violating its rules about glorifying violence”. This comes days after the microblogging site warned that a tweet by the President could contain misinformation and added a fact-check option for users. Trump’s tweet on the violence in Minneapolis was hidden for users Friday with a note from Twitter: “This

Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.” Twitter, however, restricted other users from liking, commenting or retweeting the tweet except for a quoted retweet. It was referring to the second of two tweets in a thread by Trump that read, “I can’t stand back & watch this happen to a great American City, Minneapolis. A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control.

US layoffs climb to 41 million, After fact-check, Twitter flags Donald despite business reopenings Trump’s tweet for ‘glorifying violence’

Pompeo says Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China HiIndia Newsdesk

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has notified Congress that the Trump administration no longer regards Hong Kong as autonomous from mainland China, setting the stage for U.S. to withdraw the former British colony’s preferential trade and financial status it has enjoyed since it reverted to Chinese rule 23 years ago. The move does not carry any immediate penalties, which would have to be decided by President Donald Trump in consultation with Congress. But the administration sees it as putting China on notice that Hong Kong’s perks are in jeopardy. “Hong Kong does not continue to warrant treatment under United States laws in the same manner as U.S. laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1997,” Pompeo said in a statement Wednesday. The notice brings the future of Hong Kong squarely into the administration’s numerous battles with China that have put the world’s two largest economies at odds.

Donald Trump’s latest: Coronavirus a very bad ‘gift’ from China

Donald Trump to sign executive order on social media today: White House

Donald Trump has made repeated statements in the past, blaming China for the pandemic and suggesting that he may seek damages from Beijing over the pandemic. HiIndia Newsdesk In his latest jibe blaming China for the coronavirus pandemic, US President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that Covid-19 is a very bad “gift” from the Asian giant and that it continues to march ahead. “All over the World the CoronaVirus, a very bad “gift” from China, marches on. Not good!” Trump tweeted. In his earlier tweet, Trump stated that the US has reached a “very sad milestone” as the death toll due to Covid-19 outbreak surpassed 1 lakh deaths. “We have just reached a very sad milestone with the coronavirus pandemic deaths reaching 100,000. To all of the families & friends of those who have passed, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy & love for everything that these great people stood

for & represent. God be with you!” he tweeted. The US President has made repeated statements in the past, blaming China for the pandemic and suggesting that he may seek damages from Beijing over the pandemic, which is considered to have emerged in Wuhan. He has also been at loggerheads with the World Health Organisation (WHO) while proposing to name the pandemic as ‘Wuhan virus’. On Wednesday, Trump was criticised on social media after videos of him at his golf club in Virginia emerged on social media. According to Reuters, this is the second time Trump went golfing during the pandemic. Trump was seen on the golf course a day after he said houses of worship were “essential” and asked governors to reopen them during the Memorial Day weekend.

HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on social media companies on Thursday, White House officials said after Trump threatened to shut down the platform he accused of stifling conservative voices. The officials, who spoke to reporters traveling with Trump to Washington from Florida aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, gave no further details. Before leaving for Florida earlier in the day to observe a space launch that was postponed because of bad weather, Trump again accused Twitter Inc and other social media of bias without offering evidence. It was not immediately clear whether Trump has the authority to shut down the companies.

HiIndia Newsdesk

ndia has now overtaken Turkey as the ninth worst-hit country in terms of total number of cases. India’s count of recoveries is the tenth largest now after the US, Brazil, Germany, Russia, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Iran and China. The nationwide tally of confirmed

COVID-19 cases crossed 1.6 lakh on Thursday to make India the world’s ninth worst-hit country by the deadly virus infection, while the death toll rose to 4,633 to near China’s official count of 4,634 fatalities, as per data from various states and union territories. However, an online real-time tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University showed India surpassing China with as many as 4,695 deaths by Thursday night. The first case of the novel coronavirus was discovered in China last December and since then it has spread to virtually all parts of the world infecting more than 57 lakh people globally. More than 3.5 lakh have died too across the world, but very few new cases are being reported in China for the last few days.

‘Not Worried About Virus But Govt Apathy’: Lack of PPEs Makes AIIMS Heathcare Staff Target for Covid-19

as India recorded the biggest-ever spike of over 7,400 Covid-19 cases in a day. The nationwide curbs was first announced by PM Modi on March 24 for 21 days in a bid to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. In the run-up to the end of the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba held a video conference with municipal commissioners and district magistrates of 13 Covid-19 hit cities that have contributed to more than 70% of the cases in the country. Central government officials said that in the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary reiterated the need to seal the containment zones where number of cases are the highest, and took suggestions from states to decide the strategy from June 1.

AIIMS’ sanitation chief, who had tested positive for Covid-19, died three days ago and a mess worker died last week. Workers in their position are given only gloves and masks, not PPEs.

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi is witnessing more and more HCWs (health

care workers) falling prey to the virus. At India’s premier medical institute around 195 HCWs have tested positive so far, including doctors, nurses, mess workers,

laboratory staff, technicians, sanitation staff even security guards. In 48 hours alone over 50 staff have tested positive for Covid-19. AIIMS’ sanitation chief, who had tested positive for Covid-19, died three days ago and a mess worker died last week. Workers in their position are given only gloves and masks, not PPEs. “It’s not the virus that we are worried about. It’s the apathy of the government and the AIIMS administration that worries us. If this continues, we will be short of HCWs to treat patients. Since March we have been writing and fighting for the safety of hostel premises, poor sanitation, lack of proper quarantine protocol and need for adequate testing,” said Dr Srinivas Rajkumar T, General Secretary, RDA, AIIMS-New Delhi.

HiIndia Newsdesk Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India](ANI): As the number of COVID-19 cases is rapidly surging in Mumbai, almost all ICU beds for the COVID-19 patients are occupied here, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s data. As of May 27, of the 645 ICU beds, 99 per cent were occupied while a total of 65 per cent of the 4,292 beds with oxygen support were occupied. Seventytwo per cent of 373 ventilators were in use. A total of 1,438 people tested positive for coronavirus in Mumbai on Thursday taking the total number of cases in the city to 35,273. The metropolitan city reported 38 deaths on the day due to the disease

China Rejects Trump’s Mediation Offer Govt must come clean and tell exactly “No Need for Third Party in Dispute” what’s happening, says Rahul Gandhi

HiIndia Newsdesk China on Friday rejected US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between India and China to end their current border standoff. In a surprise move, Trump on Wednesday offered to “mediate or arbitrate” the raging border dispute between India and China, saying he was “ready, willing and able” to ease the tensions, amid the continuing standoff between the armies of the two Asian giants.

Reacting for the first time to the US president’s offer, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, the two countries did not want the “intervention” from a third party to resolve the current military standoff. “Between China and India we have existing border-related mechanisms and communication channels”, Zhao told a media briefing here when asked about Trump’s offer. We are capable of properly resolving the issues between us through dialogue and consultation. We do not need the intervention of the third party”, he said. Several areas along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides even two weeks after they were engaged in two separate face-offs.

HiIndia Newsdesk Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday urged the government to come clean on the border standoff with China, saying there should be transparency on the issue. He added that the government’s silence on the issue is only fueling speculations. “The government’s silence about the border

situation with China is fueling massive speculation and uncertainty at a time of crisis. GOI must come clean and tell India exactly what’s happening” Indian and Chinese troops have been involved in a face-for over three weeks along the Line of Actual Control (LAC.) Several areas along the LAC in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides. India has said that the Chinese military was hindering normal patrolling by its troops along the LAC in Ladakh and Sikkim and has strongly refuted Beijing’s contention that the escalating tension between the two armies was triggered by trespassing of Indian forces across the Chinese side.

Donald Trump’s immigration plans create panic and anger among the Indian diaspora in the US Trump had ordered a 60-day halt in issuing green cards to prevent people from immigrating to the United States, backing away from his harder-edged plans to suspend guest-worker programmes after business groups erupted in anger at the prospect of losing labour from countries like India.

My Only Fault Was I Was Born in India’: Shaken by Trump’s Immigration Plan, Indian Diaspora Stare at Bleak Future

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: When President Donald Trump announced via a late-night tweet that he would “suspend immigration” to protect US jobs from an economic tailspin caused by

the coronavirus, Priyanka Nagar prepared for the worst. For more than a decade, Nagar, an Indian citizen, had steadily built a life in the United States but she was now back in India, awaiting a visa extension. She and her husband, who works for Microsoft,

have applied for green cards. They hung an American flag from their balcony in their home in Washington state, where Nagar had given birth to the couple’s fiveyear-old daughter. But when Nagar read Trump’s tweet posted late Monday, while separated from her family in the United States, the thought of leaving her hardforged life behind without even a goodbye was devastating, she said. “I beg the government not to think of us as enemies,” Nagar, 39, a software developer, said. “I want the US to prosper. It has given us so much.” By Tuesday, Trump had ordered a 60-day halt in issuing green cards to prevent people from immigrating to the United States, backing away from his harder-edged plans to suspend guest-worker programmes after business groups erupted in anger at the prospect of losing labour from countries like India. But as millions of Americans file for unemployment, flooding food banks and hospitals, foreign workers worry that the pandemic will uproot them sooner rather than later.

HiIndia Newsdesk Sri Lankan pacer Shehan Madushanka has been detained by the police on a charge of possessing heroin by police on Monday. The police official told AFP that Madushanka was in possession of two grams of heroin when he was caught in the town on Pannala. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is planning to suspend the contract of medium pacer Shehan Madushanka after he was arrested for possessing heroin.

The second Test, expected in Adelaide from December 11, is set to be the first-ever DayNight pink-ball affair between the two sides. The third Test is likely to begin on Boxing Day (December 26) in Melbourne, while the final one, in Sydney, expected from January 3 next year. This also means the series would feature four Tests and not five as had been earlier requested by Cricket Australia. the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unlikely to accede to CA’s request for five Test matches, making it clear to the latter that such a proposal would be considered only during future engagements. The Australian cricket board has been reeling from a financial crisis since the onset of the pandemic, and the uncertainty surrounding the sport resulted in retrenchments and up to 80 per cent pay cut of its employees.

Alireza Firouzja: Champ in the making

HiIndia Newsdesk Late last April, Magnus Carlsen, a calm man of measured words, seemed unusually animated. “Truth be told, I wanted to crush him,” he admitted, after a routine victory in the eponymous Carlsen Invitational. Soon the world champion’s vengeance turned into appreciation of his vanquished opponent: “He’s very, very slippery. Never underestimate him. He is devilishly tricky.”

That slippery, devilishly tricky, can’tunderestimate-opponent Carlsen was alluding to was Alireza Firouzja (surname pronounced as Firoz-jo), a scruffy 16-yearold from Iran with deep eyes and faint moustache, who had twice punctured Carlsen’s aura of invulnerability in the space of a fortnight. First in a marathon 204-game one-minute bullet match in early April and then in an equally engrossing blitz game in the Banter Cup a week later. The second defeat shook the inscrutable Norwegian. He cracked and confided: “It’s really vexing. I’m just constantly doubting myself and it’s all a total mess.” Though this year has seen fissures emerge in Carlsen’s game, the multi-format world champion self-admonishing himself for “silly mistakes” ever so often.

BWF extends Olympic qualification period amid coronavirus pandemic

HiIndia Newsdesk Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], (ANI): The Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Wednesday announced the updated qualifying regulations for the Olympic, which includes an extended qualification period. The Olympic qualification period will be introduced from Week 1-17 in 2021 and includes the select number of tournaments that were postponed, cancelled or suspended due to COVID-19. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has also been pushed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The BWF, in a statement, said that the

priority was to ensure a fair solution to the disrupted qualification system in order to qualify players for the postponed Games. Also, the BWF said that both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have approved the amendments. Also, all ranking points earned at tournaments completed during the original Olympic qualification period will be maintained under the Race to Tokyo ranking list. These eligible tournaments within the new qualifying period must be completed by Week 17 in 2021. “Tournaments rescheduled for the end of 2020 outlined in the revamped BWF Tournament Calendar 2020 released last week will not count towards qualification. Only the 2021 editions of each tournament,” reads the statement. For the Paralympics tournament, the federation said only one tournament was cancelled and it has been included in the adjusted qualification system.

L e ague Shareholders to d ay vote d unanimously to resume contact training.” The 2019-2020 season of the league has been put on hold since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact. Premier League further stated that strict medical protocols are in place to ensure the training ground is the safest environment possible, adding that players and staff will continue to be tested for COVID-19 twice a week.“Stage Two of the Return to Training protocol has been agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the PFA, LMA and the Government. Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season, when conditions allow,” the statement read.

The ICC is set to discuss the process to elect its new chief at its board meeting on Thursday with media reports saying that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief Colin Graves is favourite to fill the post. “No final decision was taken regarding the election process and the subject will be discussed further at the next ICC Board meeting on Thursday,” the ICC said in a statement.“The existing Chair confirmed he was not seeking any extension to his term but would support the board to ensure a smooth transition.”

Dairy-rich diet may help lower risks Physical activity can bring ‘big impact’ of diabetes, high blood pressure for women with high-risk breast cancer

A

At least 2 servings a day of total dairy were associated with a 24 per cent lower risk of metabolic syndrome, rising to 28 per cent for full-fat dairy alone, compared with no daily dairy intake.

It’s never too late to start walking, doing yoga, cycling, or swimming and that activity certainly appears to pay off,

A

two and half hours a week of exercise can help women not only to live longer but are also more likely to remain cancer-free after their treatment, according to a recent study. These are the findings of a comprehensive analysis of exercise and its protective role for high-risk breast cancer patients. The study suggests that even a modest amount of exercise can be beneficial. “Aiming for as little as two and half hours a week of exercise - the minimum under federal guidelines - can have a big impact for women with high-risk breast cancer,” said study lead

recent study links eating at least two daily servings of dairy to lower cluster of factors that heighten cardiovascular disease risk. The observed associations were strongest for full-fat dairy products, the findings indicated. The study was published online in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. Previously published research has suggested that

higher dairy intake is associated with a lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome. But these studies have tended to focus on North America and Europe to the exclusion of other regions of the world. To see whether these associations might also be found in a broader range of countries, the researchers drew on people taking part in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study.

The researchers examined transmissions in metropolitan areas with dense populations and abundant observations -- New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Miami and others.

US could’ve saved 36,000 lives if social distancing measure adopted earlier: Study

T

he United States could have saved 36,000 lives only if the social distancing measure was adopted a week earlier instead of March 15, according to new research from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health scientists. The impact of coronavirus crisis might have seemed like a distant threat during the first week of March to most of the Americans. However, the study noted that things and the numbers would have been different if the control measures were taken on March 8, The Washington Post reported. The US is the worst-hit country due to coronavirus. According to John Hopkins University data,

The blend of spices in your kitchen is super healthy for you, says study Adding spices like cinnamon, coriander, cumin, ginger to our meals actually helps reduce inflammation. It’s time to spice up the bland food!

R

esearch published in the Journal of Nutrition collected a blend of spices like basil, bay leaf, black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, ginger, oregano, parsley, red pepper, rosemary, thyme and turmeric. This research-based its prerequisite aim on a study that found that a variety of different spices, like ginger and turmeric, have anti-inflammatory properties. This study examined 12 men between the ages of 40 and 65 who had obesity or had at least

one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In randomised order, each participant ate three different versions of a meal high in saturated fat and carbohydrates on three different days. It included one with no spices, one with two grams of the spice blend, and one with six grams of the spice blend. Between every hour to four hours, researchers drew blood samples before and then after each meal to measure inflammatory markers. the researchers also cultured white blood cells and stimulated them to get the cells to respond to an inflammatory stimulus, similar to what would happen while your body is fighting an infection. “We think that’s important because it’s representative of what would happen in the body. Cells would encounter a pathogen and produce inflammatory cytokines,” Rogers stated.

Choosing to walk or cycle post the pandemic lockdown can prevent early disease: Study

Rikki Cannioto, PhD, EdD. “Our research shows that some physical activity is far better, in terms of cancer survival than no activity at all and it is just as beneficial as longer workouts,” Cannioto added. Cannioto’s study was part of a clinical trial run by SWOG Cancer Research Network, a cancer clinical trials network funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a member of the oldest and largest publiclyfunded research network in the nation. there are 1,577,287 confirmed cases and 94,702 deaths. For the research, the scientists compared two hypothetical scenarios in which social distancing measures are reimplemented two to three weeks after being relaxed nationally starting from May 4. When taken the case of a two-week delay, the researchers estimated a daily peak of 35,288 new cases and 3,392 new deaths by July 1. Meanwhile in the case of a three-week delay, they estimate a daily peak of 42,560 new cases and 4,166 new deaths by July 1. “Efforts raising public awareness of the ongoing high transmissibility and explosive growth potential of COVID-19 are still needed at this critical time,” said lead researcher Jeffrey Shaman, Ph.D., professor of environmental health sciences at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Rejecting the study’s findings, White House spokesperson Judd Deere, in a statement to The Post, said that federal officials made the best decisions possible with the information available at the time.

A study by Lancet Planetary Health conducted research on more than 300,000 commuters in England and Wales. The extensive study suggested that an increased transport choice of walking and cycling post-lockdown may reduce deaths from heart disease and cancer. The study further stated that those who travel by car are at higher risk of getting early illness or death.

When was the last time you chose to walk or cycle instead of driving around? Research says it can actually save us from getting an early illness. Comparatively, those who cycled to work had a 20% lesser risk of early death and a 24% reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease. During the study period, the possible risk of participants dying from cancer reduced by a whopping 16%. Compared to those who drive to work, walking to work reduced the chances of cancer diagnosis by seven percent. Although researchers stated that the associations between walking and other outcomes, such as rates of death from cancer and heart disease, were less certain.

Ranveer Singh has not fulfilled promise made to Deepika Padukone while wooing her

R

anveer Singh pulled out all the stops while wooing Deepika Padukone, from sending her flowers to planning romantic dates for her. During their courtship, he also promised to cook a meal specially for her, a promise that he is yet to deliver on. In an Instagram live with Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian national football team, Ranveer said that he bragged about his butter chicken making skills in a bid to impress Deepika and his in-laws. He claimed that when he was in university in the US, he would make the best butter chicken in town, with people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India queueing up outside his door to get a taste. However, Ranveer confessed that it was ‘cheating wali butter chicken’, made with a readymade mix. “I realised,

if you use the readymade packet, then it doesn’t really count. So if I can’t do that, then what am I left with? I am only left with anda-bread. I can only cook eggs,” he said. “Deepika is actually very fond of cooking and she is way better than me, so I leave those kitchen duties to her. But I am a very enthusiastic assistant to her. Whenever she is baking or making me Thai food, especially during the lockdown when we have more time to do these little things, I am a very enthusiastic Santa’s little helper,” he added. As Ranveer said that his culinary skills were limited to eggs, Deepika busted his ‘lies’ and commented, “Lies! You can’t even make eggs!” She also interrupted his live chat and challenged him to prove her wrong by making eggs right away. He accepted the challenge and told Sunil that he would cook breakfast the next day.

The drive-in movie stages a comeback in US

Venice Film Festival will go ahead in September: Veneto governor

The drive-in movie, dismissed by many as a relic of an earlier time in America, is making a comeback as entertainment seemingly designed for the coronavirus era. Beth Wilson, who owns the Warwick Drivein about an hour’s drive from Manhattan, says it has been sold out since May 15, the first day drive-ins were allowed to operate under New York’s reopening plan. The drive-in has struck a chord with Americans who have been largely confined to their homes since March watching the death toll from COVID-19 accumulate on their TV screens. Due to the lockdowns imposed on the film industry across the world to limit the spread of the virus, the festival will probably be attended by fewer productions, said Zaia, who is also a board member of the Biennale di Venezia. The Cannes Film Festival, the world’s largest, was forced to postpone its latest edition in May due to the virus epidemic. Italy plans to lift all travel curbs from June 3 and travelers from European Union countries will be able to enter without going into quarantine.

The drive-in has struck a chord with Americans who have been largely confined to their homes since March watching the death toll from COVID-19 accumulate on their TV screens.

streaming on their TV,” said Wilson, adding she hopes the Warwick Drive-In can help people reconnect. “I just want to see their happiness, their well-being.” The drive-in experience is virtually tailormade for the pandemic. Patrons control their close social interactions and any contact with other people happens outdoors, which is seen as lower risk for infection than indoors. The Four Brothers Drive-In in Amenia, New York, which like Warwick has halved its capacity to put more distance between cars, is selling into next week after running out of tickets for the Memorial Day weekend.

Twitter testing its new reply-limiting feature

It’s important to use language that empowers people to make wise decisions and think more critically about who they’re interacting with online. We’re especially glad to see this reflected in the thoughtful approach around safety considerations for younger users

A

merican social media company Facebook is introducing in-app notifications in Messenger to warn people who are about to connect with someone impersonating someone else or simply trying to scam them. According to Mashable, if you’re talking to someone and they ask for money out of nowhere, Messenger will essentially tap you on the shoulder with these “safety notices” and pop up a “Steps you can take” alert, suggesting what you should do in order to avoid a potential scam or fraud. The feature goes live for both iOS and Android users. Individual users below the age of 18 will now receive alerts if an adult is attempting to engage in an inappropriate conversation, as per Facebook. The alert

has received praise from internet safety advocates, including the CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, Stephen Balkam. He said, “It’s important to use language that empowers people to make wise decisions and think more critically about who they’re

interacting with online. We’re especially glad to see this reflected in the thoughtful approach around safety considerations for younger users.” Facebook’s director of product management, Messenger privacy and safety, Jay Sullivan, wrote in an official blog post, “As we move to end-to-end encryption, we are investing in privacy-preserving tools like this to keep people safe without accessing message content. We developed these safety tips with machine learning that looks at behavioral signals like an adult sending a large amount of friend or message requests to people under 18. This ensures that the new features will be available and effective when Messenger is end-to-end encrypted.

T

witter on Wednesday announced that it is testing a new feature that will allow users to decide who can and who cannot reply to their tweets. According to The Verge some of the Twitter accounts are already using the new feature. Earlier, everybody could reply to everybody’s tweet if the person’s profile wasn’t private or blocked but the new feature will give users the power to customise and choose who gets the right to reply. The move follows other recent attempts to revamp replies, including threaded responses. It’s clear the issue has become a top priority for the service in recent years.

Sun protection:Even though we are indoors a sunblock is an absolute essential. The ultraviolet radiation emitted from the sun can be divided into 3 kinds of rays – UVA, UVB and UVC. Out of these, UVC rays are the shortest rays and don’t reach the earth due to ozone absorption. UVB rays can get blocked by the windows in your house (due to their design). However, the UVA rays account for 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the earth and can cause premature ageing and other concerns. They can also penetrate the glass in your home through the windows, creating the need for you to use a sunblock. Especially if you are sitting near a space where there is an ample amount of sun light coming in.

nternational Tea Day is observed annually on May 21 to create awareness about the significance of tea around the world, in terms of economy and culture. We may be a tea loving country, enjoying the brew in its various forms. But how much do you actually know about green tea?

The unprocessed nature of green tea is what makes it taste sweeter, robust and less bitter than its counterparts. However, not all green teas taste the same, even after coming from the same plant variety. The tastes vary on the basis of the processing methods and cultivation practices. The flavour also depends on the environment where the tea is grown. Kumar adds, “While the Chinese green teas like dragonwell and gunpowder impart a grassy, earthy, roasted flavour due to their pan-fried processing, Japanese green teas have a unique sweet, vegetal or seaweed-like flavour acquired from the steaming process.” Making that perfect cup of green tea involves getting the basics right. Unlike the humble everyday chai, green tea requires no milk. Here is a simple way to make green tea:

- Boil a cup of hot water. - Measure one 1 tsp of tea leaves and add to it. If using tea bags, then 1 teabag for one cup of hot water is perfect. - Let the tea leaves steep in the hot water for 2-3 minutes; more than that can result in a bitter taste. - Now strain the brewed tea into a cup. - You could add a few drops of honey, lemon or ginger for flavour and enjoy!

Sen. Kamla Harris, Sanders, Markey Introduce Bill to Provide Monthly $2,000 Payments During the COVID-19 Crisis

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO, CA- U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Ed Markey (D-MA) May 8 had introduced the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act, legislation that provides a monthly $2,000 check to those struggling to make ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic. As rent comes due and bills continue to pile up, Americans desperately need assistance to financially survive this crisis, said a press release. “The coronavirus pandemic has caused millions to struggle to pay the bills or feed their families,” said Harris. “The CARES Act gave Americans an important one-time payment, but it’s clear that wasn’t nearly enough to meet the needs of this historic crisis. Bills will continue to come in every single month during the pandemic and so should help from government. The Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act will ensure families have the resources they need to make ends meet. I am eager to continue working with Senators Sanders and Markey as we push to pass this bill immediately,” the Indian American senator said in the release. “As a result of this horrific pandemic, tens of millions of Americans are living in economic desperation not knowing where their next meal or paycheck will come from,” said Sanders. “The one-time $1,200 check that many Americans recently received is not nearly enough to pay the rent, put food on the table and make ends meet. During this unprecedented crisis, Congress has a responsibility to make sure that every workingclass household in America receives a $2,000 emergency payment a month for each family member. I am proud to be introducing legislation with Senators Harris and Markey to do exactly that. If we can bail out large corporations, we

New York Will allow Small Religious Gathering Statewide BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY– New York will allow small religious gatherings starting May 21st, as the state gradually loosens pandemic restrictions, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Religious gatherings of up to 10 people will be allowed statewide as long as participants wear masks and practice social distancing. The state also is allowing drive-in and parking lot services. Weddings will count as religious ceremonies. The state will work with an Interfaith Advisory Council to discuss proposals to safely bring back religious services. The council consists of dozens of religious leaders, including Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts. “I understand their desire to get to religious ceremonies as soon as possible. As a former altar boy, I get it,” Cuomo said. “But we need to find out how to do it and do it safely and do it smartly. The last thing we want to do is have a religious ceremony that winds up having more people infected.”

The guidelines for small religious gatherings came a day after Cuomo said the state will allow Memorial Day ceremonies with up to 10 people, even though nonessential gatherings have been barred in New York since March. The New York Civil Liberties Union said both announcements raise constitutional

concerns. “We agree small events where people observe social distancing should be permitted, but that has to apply to all First Amendment events, regardless of message and regardless of whether religious or political,” Christopher Dunn, the group’s legal director, wrote in an email.

BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC- Panera Bread president and chief executive officer Niren Chaudhary has stated his support for President Donald Trump’s push to re-open the American economy through phases. Choudhary made the announcement during a May 18 White House briefing with restaurant executives and industry leaders, saying reopening amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is the right thing to do, according to reports. The U.S. has started opening up after two months of lockdown amid the raging coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. is the worst-hit country with over 1.5 million cases and nearly 95,000 deaths due to the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University. “I believe that the health crisis is now becoming a financial crisis with 36 million Americans unemployed, and a humanitarian crisis as well, with about 54 million Americans fighting hunger,” Chaudhary said during the briefing. “And therefore, I think opening up the economy right now in a phased manner is the right thing to do,” Chaudhary added. The restaurant industry is one of the worst affected with millions of Americans being laid off or furloughed in the last two-three months due to the pandemic. During the roundtable, Trump noted that the restaurant industry has been “tremendously impacted” by the CO Trump told the restaurant executives that his government’s Paycheck Protection Program has delivered over $30 billion in aid to the restaurant industry. Under the program, relief via potentially forgivable loans are being provided to businesses hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to reports. In the past few weeks, Trump has emphasized on a safe and gradual reopening of the U.S. economy. Most of the 50 U.S. states have announced their plans to reopen the businesses amidst the growing number of the coronavirus cases and deaths, reports said. Chaudhary was named CEO of Panera in May 2019, according to a Panera Bread press release. He has more than 25 years of international corporate leadership experience in the food retail and hospitality industry. Chaudhary holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, an MBA in marketing from the University of Delhi, and also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Panera Bread runs a chain of over 2,000 bakery-cafes in the U.S. and Canada. An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and M.B.A. in marketing from the Delhi University, Chaudhary is frequently invited by the White House to share his views on the revival of the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. Also during the briefing, Panera Bread and Covelli Enterprises announced a partnership with the Children’s Hunger Alliance and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide meals to children in need in Ohio, WKBN said in a report. Covelli’s Panera Bread restaurants will be assisting CHA to feed children who are typically provided meals at Ohio schools, afterschool and childcare centers. The state of Illinois already sends more dollars to the federal government than we receive prior to the pandemic. We need them to step up.”

Edison Man Arrested to 2-Month Long Car Burglary Spree BY A STAFF WRITER EDISON, NJ- Over the past two months, the parking lots at the “Exchange,” an apartment complex located on Riverside Station Boulevard, were the scene of numerous burglaries into unlocked vehicles, as well as the area where two motor vehicles were stolen, Miller said in a statement. On May 23rd, members of the Secaucus Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit were conducting surveillance in these parking lots in response to the string of burglaries and thefts. While conducting surveillance they observed Abid attempting to enter several parked vehicles. He was subsequently placed under arrest for criminal attempt to commit burglary, authorities said. Evidence obtained at the time of Abid’s arrest, along with the investigation of 13 other car burglaries, linked him to those crimes, officials said. Additionally, Abid was identified as the person who stole a 2012 Honda Civic on March 31st and a 2019 Acura RDX on or about May 16th, police said. “This arrest would not of have been possible without the cooperative effort between the Building Management at the ‘Exchange’ and the Secaucus Police Department,” Miller added.

Abid, 25, of Edison was charged with 13 counts of burglary, 10 counts of theft, and criminal attempt to commit burglary and he was remanded to the Hudson County Jail. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact the Secaucus Police Department Detective Division at 201-3302052 or detectivedivision@secaucus.net.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHESTER, NJ — Dr. Rik Mehta, the frontrunner to take on Democrat Senator Cory Booker in 2020, recently launched his “Made in America” medicines campaign that will require companies to disclose the country of origin of their prescription drugs. Americans have a right to know where their medicine comes from especially when nearly all other products are labeled with the country it was made in,” Mehta said in a press release. “Americans have a right to know whether their medicine was ‘Made in America’ or ‘Made in China’ and should be labeled as such.” Currently, the FDA does not require a drug’s label to include the country where the ingredients originated from to make the drug. “Take a look in your own medicine cabinet and you won’t find a ‘Made in’ label on your bottle. I know because I’m a pharmacist and I can’t find this information easily,” Mehta said. “A bottle of ibuprofen might say ‘Madison, NJ’ on it, yet there is no manufacturing plant located there. So where was it made?” The Indian American candidate pointed out that, currently, if the majority of the ingredients that go into making a drug come from China, but a secondary step was taken to mix or package the drug in another country, then the country where it was mixed or packaged (or in some cases the principal place of business), could be placed on the label even though China was the source of the ingredients. “These bizarre and conflicting laws and regulations that govern how to label products with their country of origin has allowed companies to profit from foreign drug manufacturing while hiding their supply chain from the American people for too long,” said Mehta. Me h t a n o t e d t h a t C h i n e s e manufacturing of American drugs have nearly doubled while many Americanbased manufacturing plants shuttered, moving the manufacturing of essential medicines, like antibiotics, to foreign countries. “Under my ‘Made in America’ medicines plan, we will bring thousands of manufacturing jobs back to America, provide transparency in the medical supply chain, reduce the price of our prescription drugs and more importantly save lives,” Mehta declared.
