HEALTH EXPERTS DESCRIBE ANNOUNCEMENT AS ‘SELLING DREAMS’

HiIndia Newsdesk Rafael Nadal announced on Tuesday that he will compete in the Paris Masters next month, despite previously saying he might not play again this season. The 34-year-old won a recordextending 13th French Open title earlier this month with a one-sided final victory over world number one Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros. "It's indoor season time... this picture was earlier today practicing at @rnadalacademy," he posted on Twitter alongside a photo of him training. "And yes... getting ready for #ParisBercy." The Paris Masters is scheduled to run from November 2-8. Any health rules to be implemented for the event due to the coronavirus are yet to be announced. After moving level with Roger Federer on a men's record 20 Grand Slam titles, Nadal said: "I don't know what I'm going to do after Roland Garros."

On the eve of his 80th birthday, Brazilian football great Pele told his fans he was happy and healthy and pleased to be reaching the landmark with his lucid mental state. Pele has been safe at home in Brazil for most of the pandemic, but in a jovial recorded message ahead of his landmark birthday on Friday, he looked ahead, not back. “Now that I am 80, I need to thank God for giving me the health to get this far, and lucidly, although not always intelligently,” he said with a laugh. “Wherever I go the world over I am well received, doors are always open to me. I hope that when I get to heaven God welcomes me the same way that everyone welcomes me today thanks to our beloved football.” He remains the only player to have won the World Cup three times.

hicago’s top doctor urged residents to not invite anyone into their homes or apartments as the city experiences multiple coronavirus “warning signs” and enters what officials are calling a “second surge” in the pandemic. “Please do not invite anyone over to your house or apartment,” Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said Monday. “This is not the time for non-essential gatherings, period.” Currently, Chicago is reporting an average of more than 500 new coronavirus cases daily, the “highest daily rate since the tail end of the first surge at the end of May,” officials said. As of Monday, Chicago was seeing a 7-day rolling average of 508 new cases per day, according to the city’s coronavirus data dashboard.

Trump and Biden row over Trump calls CBS biased, hateful, rude Covid, climate and racism for ‘60 Minutes’ interview footage The White House had kept a single-frame copy of the interview, in which only Trump is visible but Lesley Stahl can be heard asking questions.

US President Donald Trump and his White House challenger Joe Biden clashed over Covid and race while trading corruption charges, in their final live TV debate.

HiIndia Newsdesk On the pandemic, Mr Biden would not rule out more lockdowns, while Mr Trump insisted it was time to reopen the US. Mr Trump cited unsubstantiated claims Mr Biden personally profited off his son's business dealings. The Democrat brought up Mr Trump's opaque taxes. Mr Biden has a solid national

lead with 11 days to go until the election. But the margin is slimmer in the handful of states that could vote either way and ultimately decide the outcome. Thursday night's primetime duel in Nashville, Tennessee, was a less acrimonious and more substantive affair than the pair's previous showdown on 29 September, which devolved into insults and name-calling. Following that political brawl, debate organisers this time muted microphones during the candidates' opening statements on each topic to minimise disruption. But the 90-minute debate, moderated by NBC's Kristen Welker, saw plenty of personal attacks between the opponents, whose mutual dislike was palpable.

HiIndia Newsdesk The White House on Thursday released raw footage from an interview that US President Donald Trump did with “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl, breaking an agreement to keep material from the highly-anticipated clash private until an edited version could air this weekend. The footage shows Stahl, a veteran journalist

who has interviewed Trump twice before, asking direct questions and refuting some of Trump’s answers on topics including healthcare and the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Look at the bias, hatred and rudeness on behalf of 60 Minutes and CBS,” Trump said in post on his Twitter profile on Thursday morning, with a link to his Facebook page, where he posted the nearly 38 minute interview.

‘Look at India, the air is filthy,’ China, marking its first war with says US President Donald US, urges sacrifice at home Trump at final debate

HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump on Thursday used the word “filthy” to describe pollution in India during an exchange on climate crisis as he clashed with Democratic rival Joe Biden on Covid-19, immigration, racism, healthcare and foreign policy in their second and final debate in the race for the White House. Though better behaved and disciplined than they were in their disastrous first debate on September 29, they also launched vicious attacks on each other over corruption, character and integrity in

US president sparked a storm on social media when he used the word “filthy” to describe the quality of air in India - language he has never used for a country he has counted among America’s friends the second showdown on Friday morning, India time, at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Trump came into the debate as an underdog, trailing Biden by wide margins in national polls and in battleground states, desperately in need of changing the trajectory of the race with just 12 days left for polling to close, by which time a large number of Americans would have already cast their votes through early in-person and mail-in voting. “Look at China, how filthy it is. Look at Russia, look at, India, it’s so filthy, the air is filthy,” the president said in a segment on climate crisis. “The Paris accord, I took us out because we were going to have to spend trillions of dollars, and we were treated very unfairly when they put us in there, they did us a greatest service. They were going to take away our businesses,” he said. The New York Times’ fact-checkers labelled Trump’s assertion “misleading”: “Air pollution in China and India is indeed a serious issue — India is one of the most polluted countries in the world.

Obama mocks Trump in Google antitrust fight fiery speech thrusts Pichai in line of fire HiIndia Newsdesk Former President Barack Obama made a fiery first in-person campaign appearance on behalf of Joseph R. Biden Jr. in Philadelphia o n We d n e s d a y, ridiculing President Trump for complaining ab out c amp aig ning in Pennsylvania, contracting the coronavirus and hiding business dealings with China.“We know that he continues to do business with China because he has a secret Chinese bank account. How is that possible?” Obama asked supporters who had been invited to hear him speak at a drive-in rally in a Philadelphia sports complex. He was referring to a recent New York Times report that revealed previously unknown financial holdings of the President’s — at a time when Trump is criticising Biden’s ties to the country.

HiIndia Newsdesk On Tuesday, the justice department accused Google of being “a monopoly gatekeeper of the Internet”, one that uses anti-competitive tactics to protect and strengthen its dominant hold over web search and search advertising. Google, which has generated vast profits through a recession, a pandemic and earlier investigations by government regulators on five continents, now faces the first truly existential crisis in its 22-year history. The company’s founders, Page and Sergey Brin, have left the defence to the soft-spoken Pichai, who has worked his way up the ranks over 16 years with a reputation for being a conscientious caretaker rather than an impassioned entrepreneur. Pichai, a former product manager, may seem an unlikely candidate to lead his company’s fight with the federal government. But if the tech industry’s bumptious history with antitrust enforcement is any lesson, a caretaker who has reluctantly stepped into the spotlight might be preferable to a charismatic leader born to it.

Sasaram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing his first rally in Bihar today for the election starting next week, referred to criticism of his government's move to end special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and targeted the opposition.

"Everyone was waiting for Article 370 to be repealed but these people are saying that they will overturn the decision once they are voted to power," PM Modi said in Sasaram, addressing a joint rally with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "The NDA government abrogated Article 370. These people say they will bring it back if they come to power. After making such statements they dare to ask for votes from Bihar? Is this not an insult of Bihar? The state which sends its sons and daughters to the borders to protect the country?" Nitish Kumar, significantly, was initially opposed to the Article 370 move and his Janata Dal United MPs had even opposed the central government's decision in both houses of parliament last year. Nitish Kumar's move as a BJP ally had surprised many even though it tied in with his stated ideological stand on Article 370.

Row in Nepal after R&AW chief meets KP Oli, party seeks details HiIndia Newsdesk

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a uniform marriageable age for men and women. The petitioner, who has sought the transfer of all related appeals to the Supreme Court from the high courts in Delhi and Rajasthan, has argued that the current thresholds of 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys are discriminatory and panders to the “stereotype” of women being subservient to men.

Nepal’s embattled Pr ime Minister, K P Sharma Oli, came under fresh attack Thursday, including from three former Prime Ministers and his own party leaders, for meeting Indian R&AW chief Samant Kumar Goel without keeping them in the loop. Calling it “improper” and “objectionable”, former Prime Ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, who is also executive chairman of the ruling

Health experts describe announcement as ‘selling dreams’ HiIndia Newsdesk

The BJP promised free Covid-19 vaccines for everyone in Bihar as it released its Assembly poll manifesto on Thursday, prompting the Opposition to accuse it of playing politics with the deadly pandemic and assert that any vaccine would belong to the nation and not a party. Health experts, one of whom described the announcement as “selling dreams”, said such promises were premature given the lack of clarity over which candidate vaccine might clear the tests and when, and how much of it could be produced and how fast. “At least three coronavirus vaccines are now on the verge of production in our country. When scientists clear it (the vaccine), our country will have the capacity to produce sufficient vaccines to enable what we are promising here — in Bihar, everyone will get a free vaccine,” Nirmala Sitharaman, Union finance minister, said while releasing the manifesto in Patna.

India, China Get Richer As Virus Hits US Wealth: Credit Suisse

HiIndia Newsdesk The pandemic that's led to more than 1 million deaths globally has also led to a decline in individual wealth, yet household wealth largely held up and even increased in China and India. That's one of the main findings in Credit Suisse Group AG's 2020 Global Wealth Report released Thursday. Thanks to government and central-bank actions to mitigate the Covid-19 fallout, global wealth rebounded from an initial slump in the first quarter of the year, adding $1 trillion by June after ending 2019 at $399.2 trillion."Given the damage inflicted by Covid-19 on the global economy, it seems remarkable that household wealth has emerged relatively unscathed," said economist Anthony Shorrocks, one of the report's authors, adding as a caveat that the findings are based on provisional household balance sheets for the second quarter issued by few countries. Global wealth creation is expected to rebound next year as the economy recovers. The "main outlier" is North America, the report says, where the economy is hobbled by the "continued weakness due to the high prevalence of Covid-19" in the U.S. The region's wealth per adult is projected to drop 5% this year, and remain near that level in 2021.

Indian-American Teen Anika Chebrolu Wins $25,000 Prize For Potential Covid Treatment HiIndia Newsdesk

"I developed this molecule that can bind to a certain protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This protein by binding to it it will stop the function of the protein," says Anika Chebrolu.

An Indian-American teenager has been awarded $25,000 for her research to find a treatment for the coronavirus. Anika Chebrolu, a 14-year-old from Texas, has just won the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her work on a potential drug to treat COVID-19, reports CNN. The schoolgirl has developed a molecule that can bind to a certain protein of the coronavirus and prevent it from functioning. "I developed this molecule that can bind to a certain protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This protein by binding to it it will stop the function of the protein," the eight-grader was quoted as saying by ABC News. "It's exciting. I'm still trying to process everything," she said of her big win. Anika wasn't always focused on the coronavirus. When the year began, she was working on ways to fight the seasonal flu. Her plans changed when the pandemic hit. In order to find a potential drug for the highly infectious virus, the 14-year-old used multiple computer programs to identify how and where the molecule would bind to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Anika used in-silico methodology for drug discovery to find a molecule that can selectively bind to the Spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in an attempt to find a cure for the COVID-19 pandemic. According to ABC News, it is not clear whether her research has been tested on a live model. Anika, who hopes to be a medical researcher and professor one day, said that her grandfather inspired her interest in science. "My grandpa, when I was younger, he always used to push me toward science. He was actually a chemistry professor, and he used to always tell me learn the periodic table of the elements and learn all these things about science and over time I just grew to love it," she said. She told CNN that the media hype around her science project is indicative of the fact that everyone wants the pandemic to end. "The last two days, I saw that there is a lot of media hype about my project since it involves the SARS-CoV-2 virus and it reflects our collective hopes to end this pandemic as I, like everyone else, wish that we go back to our normal lives soon."

ECG feature on Apple Watch Tweet showing Kamala Harris as UAE's Sheikh Abdullah Hindu temple saves man's life in India Durga slaying Trump criticised inspects site in Abu Dhabi HiIndia Newsdesk

Apple Watch’s electrocardiogram (ECG) feature has saved life of a 61-year-old, according to a report by IANS. R Rajhans, a retired pharma professional felt unwell in March 2020 and decided to check his ECG on the Apple Watch Series 5 gifted to him by his son. His son Siddharth, a student at Harvard University said that his father was getting arrhythmia signals or irregular heartbeats in the middle of the night. After the results persisted, he shared the same with the doctor and it was found that Rajhans suffered from a low ejection fraction and required immediate heart surgery to replace his Mitral Valve.

The idea of having a device like Apple Watch is to strike a balance between using tech and medical awareness in order to take charge of our parent’s lives. It saved my dad’s life. It’s a life-changing product, Due to the ongoing pandemic, the surgery was a bit delayed, during which Rajhans continued to monitor his ECG on his Apple Watch. Siddharth told IANS that it was the “Apple Watch that helped detect the irregular heart rhythm prior to the Valve failure Echo-cardiograph.” After the surgery was successful, Siddharth wrote to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the same in an email, to which Cook responded “Siddharth, thank you for sharing this. I am happy to note that your father received medical attention in time and I hope he’s feeling better now. New York: A tweet by the niece of Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris portraying her as the Goddess Durga slaying US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism for its religious insensitivity and violent depiction. A petition on the Change.org website demands an apology from the campaign of presidential candidate Joe Biden and Harris for the tweet by her niece, Meena, which the petitioners said was an insult to Hinduism. Several people posted responses to the tweet that was taken down later and some of the critics ended up being blocked by Meena Harris, who is a lawyer. The picture in her tweet showed a fair-skinned Kamala Harris as Durga astride a lion with the face of Biden and about to plunge a trident into a dark-skinned Trump lying on the ground. The text accompanying it said: “I am actually speechless other than to say that the first day of Navaratri was LIT.” A Republican candidate for the House of Representatives from California, Nisha Sharma, drew attention to the violent nature of the tweet. She tweeted: “A day after #FranceBeheading by Islamic radical @ meenaharris tweets this out in celebration of #Navratri. This not only grossly misappropriates a Hindu deity, this provokes #Hinduphobia by promoting violence against @realDonaldTrump.”

Toronto: Canadian police are yet to arrest a 22-year-old Indian man for his role in Indian call centre scams targeting Canada. The investigation has brought to light the involvement of international students on study visa here in these scams. It is not known whether Naman Grover of Mississauga on the outskirts of Toronto is also an international student in Canada. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Grover after he was found to be working as a 'money mule' for call centre scamsters. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the national police force of Canada, suspect he might have fled the country.

Rahul calls out Modi for ‘insulting’ soldiers

Result of ‘Howdy Modi’, Trump calls India’s air ‘filthy’: Kapil Sibal

HiIndia Newsdesk Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Friday again accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having “insulted” the soldiers with his comment that nobody had intruded into Indian territory in Ladakh, and demanded that he tell the country when will the Chinese “be thrown out”. Addressing his first rally during the Bihar assembly elections, Gandhi insisted the Chinese army had indeed intruded into Indian territory. “They have seized 1,200 km of our land. But when the Chinese army intruded, why did our prime minister insult our soldiers by saying that nobody entered into the Indian side?” he said. “The question is, Modi ji, when will you throw out the Chinese soldiers sitting in our territory?” Gandhi asked.

HiIndia Newsdesk Taking a jibe at the Centre, Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Friday said that US President Donald Trump said that India’s air is ‘filthy’, a result of ‘Howdy Modi’ event. “Trump : Fruits of Friendship 1) Questions India’s Covid death toll 2) Says India sends dirt up into the air India “ air is filthy “ 3) Called India “ tariff king “ The result of “Howdy Modi “ Sibal tweeted. US President Donald Trump described the air in India, China, and Russia as “filthy” as he defended his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord and lauded his decisions with regard to reducing carbon emissions at Thursday’s final debate before the November 3 election. “Look at China. How filthy it is. Look at Russia. Look at India, it’s filthy. The air is filthy,” said Trump

HiIndia Newsdesk Leaders of the seven-party People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration in Jammu and Kashmir are working to give the group a formal structure ahead of their “constitutional battle” for restoring to people “the rights they had before 5th of August 2019”. The alliance will likely have an executive council consisting of the chairperson, a vice-chairperson, general secretaries, a chief coordinator, a chief spokesperson, spokespersons from individual parties, and an office-bearer from each party. Several sources told The Indian Express that there is broad consensus that National Conference

(NC) president Farooq Abdullah, the most senior leader in Jammu and Kashmir, should head the alliance structure, and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti and People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone should have important roles. NC vicepresident Omar Abdullah will likely be part of the core group of the alliance. At the first meeting of the alliance on October 15, leaders of the NC, PDP, People’s Conference, CPI(M), and Awami National Conference reiterated their commitment to the Gupkar Declaration of August 4, 2019, and discussed giving their grouping formal shape.

“Free Vaccine Only In Bihar?”: BJP Faces Questions Over Poll Promise

Free Vaccine In Tamil Nadu, Declares EPS Amid Row Over Bihar BJP Promise

Bihar BJP Manifesto: This is the first time that a vaccine, especially one that is work in progress, is a part of any election manifesto. HiIndia Newsdesk

The BJP’s “free coronavirus vaccination for all” promise in Bihar ahead of next week’s election has become hugely controversial with the ruling party fending off allegations of an “appalling” attempt to use the vaccine for its political agenda. “As soon as a COVID-19 vaccine is available for production at a mass scale, every person in Bihar will get free vaccination. This is the first promise mentioned in our poll manifesto,” Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today, announcing the BJP’s manifesto for the Bihar election. There is a global race to produce a coronavirus vaccine and trials are on in many countries, including India. But this is the first time that a vaccine, especially one that is work in progress, is an election promise. Refer to your state election schedules to know when to get the Covid vaccine, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi quipped.

“Government just announced India’s Covid access strategy. Kindly refer to the state-wise election schedule to know when will you get it, along with a hoard of false promises,” tweeted the MP. “What about non-BJP ruled states? Indians who didn’t vote BJP will not get free Covid vaccine?” - Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wondered. Union Minister of State for Health Ashwini Chaubey was asked the question in Bihar. “The corona vaccine is being made across the world. When it is ready, we have prepared an elaborate plan on distributing the vaccine, who will be given preference etc... Every state will be given free coronavirus vaccine,” the minister told reporters.

HiIndia Newsdesk Chennai: The BJP’s promise of free Covid vaccine in Bihar was followed by a “me too” announcement from Tamil Nadu. The criticism of the BJP move on social media yet to die down, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami said a vaccine will be distributed free of charge in his state as well. “Once COVID-19 vaccine is ready, it will be provided to all people of the state free of cost,” announced the Chief Minister whose state is due for election next year.

HiIndia Newsdesk An ambush in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap sector that led to the death of an Assam Rifles soldier on Tuesday has put the spotlight back on China’s role to fuel insurgency in the northeast. Tuesday’s attack by the National Socialist Council of Nagalim came a week after China’s propaganda arm warned the Narendra Modi government against signing a much-speculated trade pact with Taiwan, threatening that Beijing could retaliate by supporting North-East separatists and stop recognising Sikkim as a part of India.

Indian security officials said the timing of the attack by the NSCN-I-M, which has had a long history of links with the Chinese state actors, was mostly probably a coincidence but the Chinese state media’s threat had laid bare a truth wrapped in many layers of deniability in the past - links between NorthEast insurgent groups and Beijing. Although the links between Naga and Manipur insurgents to elements in the Chinese establishment date back to much before the 1971 war, the 1975 Shillong Accord between Government of India and Naga National Council was opposed by leaders such as SS Khaplang and Thuingaleng Muivah, who were then called the China Return Gang. Together, Khaplang and Muivah formed the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) in 1980. They parted ways eight years later in 1988 to set up their own outfits; Muivah formed the NSCN (I-M) faction along with Isak Chishi Swu while Khaplang called his faction NSCN (K).

Union Cabinet approves bonus for central Worst Political Crisis In Pak Since government employees, 30 lakh to benefit Imran Khan Took Over 2 Years Ago

The announcement brings cheer among government employees as uncertainty loomed large over bonus announcement this year, owing to Covid-19 pandemic. HiIndia Newsdesk Ahead of Dussehra, the Centre announced bonus for year 2019-2020 which will benefit 30 lakh nongazetted employees. The total financial implication of this will be Rs 3,737 crore. Both productivitylinked bonus and non-productivity-linked bonus have been approved, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said on Wednesday, announcing the decisions approved by the Union Cabinet. The announcement brings cheer among

government employees as uncertainty loomed large over bonus announcement this year, owing to Covid-19 pandemic. These bonuses are generally announced before Dussehra every year. But as there was no announcement until Wednesday, government employees were apprehending that they might not get bonus this time. The bonus will be disbursed at one instalment and before Vijaya Dashami, the Union minister said. The beneficiaries include 17 lakh non-gazetted employees from commercial establishments like railways, post office, EPFO, ESIC who will get their productivity-linked bonus and other 13 lakh government employees who will get their non-productivity-linked bonus. All India Railways Federation — a union of railways staff — had called for a nationwide two-hour strike on October 22, demanding immediate disbursal of the bonus. The union said the government should not deny bonus pertaining to 2019-20 citing this year’s pandemic. “If middle class people have money in their hands during the festive season, demands will go up in the marker,” the minister said explaining the decision.

Official hints at plasma therapy rollback

HiIndia Newsdesk India is likely to remove convalescent plasma therapy from its standard treatment guidelines for the coronavirus disease, the head of the country’s apex health research agency signalled on Tuesday, citing its study that found no benefits from plasma. Balram Bhargava, director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, cited the council’s study on 464 patients in 39 hospitals across the country earlier this year that had suggested that plasma did not reduce mortality or severe illness in Covid-19 patients. “We’ve had discussions in the national task force and we are

discussing this further… this may be deleted from the national guidelines,” Bhargava said at a briefing by the Union health ministry. “This is the ongoing discussion and, more or less, we’re reaching towards that.” Ever since the council posted the study’s findings on a research archive on September 9, there has been speculation in medical circles whether the national task force and an expert medical panel that recommend the treatment guidelines would take into account its negative findings. Bhargava’s statement is the first official hint that the government is rethinking the presence of plasma as a therapeutic option for Covid-19.

Air pollution contributes to more than 116,000 infant deaths in India

HiIndia Newsdesk The first-ever comprehensive analysis of air pollution’s global impact on newborns has found that high particulate matter contributed to the deaths of more than 116,000 Indian infants who did not survive their first month, according to a new global

study, State of Global Air 2020 (SoGA 2020). More than half of these deaths were associated with outdoor PM2.5 and others were linked to use of solid fuels such as charcoal, wood, and animal dung for cooking. Long-term exposure to outdoor and household air pollution contributed to over 1.67 million annual deaths from stroke, heart attack, diabetes, lung cancer, chronic lung diseases, and neonatal diseases, in India in 2019. In infants, most deaths were related to complications from low birth weight and preterm birth. Overall, air pollution is now the biggest risk factor for death among others, according to the SoGA 2020 report.

Tougher restriction begin for Finger at Imran for Sharif kin arrest millions in England and Wales HiIndia Newsdesk

Greater Manchester's population of 2.8 million joined Liverpool City Region and Lancashire in England's highest tier of restrictions at midnight. And at 18:00 BST, the 3.1 million people in Wales will go into a 17-day "firebreak" lockdown. The UK recorded another 189 deaths and 21,242 new confirmed cases on Thursday. On Saturday at 00:01, South Yorkshire will also move into tier three restrictions - bringing the total number of people living under England's tightest rules to more than seven million. The tier three, "very high" alert level means pubs and bars will be closed - unless they are serving substantial meals - along with casinos, bingo halls, betting shops and soft play centres. Households are banned from mixing outdoors in private gardens or in hospitality venues and people are advised against travelling into or out of the area.

Iran in bid to ‘influence US poll’

Pope in new film endorses same-sex unions

HiIndia Newsdesk Iran and Russia have both obtained American voter registration data, top national security officials announced late on Wednesday, providing the first concrete evidence that the two countries are stepping in to try to influence the presidential election as it enters its final two weeks. Iran used the information to send threatening, faked emails to voters, said John Ratcliffe, the director of national intelligence, and Christopher A. Wray, the FBI director, in an evening announcement from the bureau’s headquarters.

HiIndia Newsdesk Pope Francis endorsed same-sex civil unions for the first time as pope while being interviewed for the feature-length documentary Francesco, which premiered on Wednesday at the Rome Film Festival. The papal thumbs-up came midway through the film that delves into issues Francis cares about most, including the environment, poverty, migration, racial and income inequality, and the people most affected by discrimination. “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” Francis said in one of his sit-down interviews for the film.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Thursday that Prime Minister Imran Khan was responsible for the circumstances surrounding the arrest of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif ’s son-in-law, an issue that brought the paramilitary forces and police in direct conflict in Karachi. Abbasi said institutions such as the spy agency, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), and Pakistan Rangers take their orders from the country’s Prime Minister. “Both the institutions, the ISI and Rangers, directly report to the Premier. Someone gave them instructions and that person can only be the Prime Minister. No one else can do that. The officials of these institutions take their orders from the country’s Premier,” he said. Opposition parties have alleged that the Sindh police chief was reportedly taken away by paramilitary Frontier Corps from his home in Karachi on Monday and forced to order the arrest of Sharif ’s son-in-law Captain (Retd) Muhammad Safdar. Safdar was arrested on Monday from his hotel room in Karachi for protesting at the mausoleum of Pakistan’s founder M.A. Jinnah just before the second rally of the Pakistan Democratic Movement — an alliance of 11 Opposition parties. He was released on bail on the same day.

Sixteen children had been "removed from harm" in the process, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said. The arrests followed a year-long investigation into images and videos that were shared online. Arrests of the suspects - all aged between 19 and 57 were made in every Australian state. Police laid a total of 350 charges, all related to possessing or producing child exploitation material. The men had allegedly used a cloud storage platform to share the abuse. The AFP described some evidence as among "the most abhorrent produced". Commissioner Reece Kershaw said identifying and rescuing victims was a "race against time" in such cases. "Pixel by pixel, our investigators painstakingly look for clues and never give up," he said.

Have a lot of expectations from Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 Devoleena Bhattacharjee

“It’s a special treat for fans on Navratri. I am so happy to see them excited, and I am sure they will love the sequel as much as the original show,” said Devoleena Bhattacharjee talking about Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 What do you have to say about the new actors who are going to take your legacy ahead with Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2? We have done a few scenes together, but until and unless I see them on screen, I don’t think it would be right to judge.

I have been following Sadhguru for a while: Will Smith

Hollywood star Will Smith and his family recently got to spend time with spiritual leader Sadhguru. The founder of the Isha Foundation is on a 10,000mile motorcycle journey across the United States. He met Smith, one of his celebrity followers, as part of the trip. A behind-the-scenes video that was posted by Sadhguru on Instagram

A behind-the-scenes video that was posted by spiritual leader Sadhguru on Instagram features glimpses of his special meeting with Hollywood star Will Smith. features glimpses of the special meeting that was all about life’s lessons. Sadhguru is seen arriving at Smith’s residence on his bike. During the interaction, the actor is heard saying, “Sadhguru is in town. I have been following him for a while. He wrote a wonderful book called Inner Engineering. I want my family to meet spiritual people, to start interacting with people who are not hooked on the material world.” Sadhguru posted the video on Instagram with the caption, “Will Smith Hosts Sadhguru: A Behindthe-Scenes Look @willsmith. Will Smith welcomes Sadhguru home to spend quality time with his family. They share heartfelt conversations, profound poetry, and enjoy Sadhguru’s wit & wisdom!” adhguru had recently shared clicks of himself and Will Smith on social media and captioned them, “Will, it was a pleasure to spend some time with you and your wonderful family.

The unpredictability is the X factor of Poison 2 Aftab Shivdasani

After 21 years in the Hindi film industry, Aftab Shivdasani has joined the bandwagon of actors who have ventured into the digital space. His debut web series Poison 2 is now streaming on ZEE5. The 42-year-old actor is curious about the audience’s reaction to the thriller, which has revenge at the centre of its plot. The official synopsis of Poison 2 reads, “Old players Nandu, Rani, and Pawan are back with their old story of deceit. Find out what their new game plan is in Poison 2”. The series also stars Raai Laxmi, Pooja Chopra, Rahul Dev, Vin Rana, Zain Imam, Asmita Sood, Joy Sengupta and Pawan Chopra among others. Aftab Shivdasani picked Poison 2 as his digital debut for ‘its script and a strong character’ which he has never been offered before. Also, he loved the genre of the show. In the trailer, his character Aditya Singh Rathore appears to be a man with many layers to his personality, and this, Aftab believes is the beauty of the character.

All I can say is that in the first season, the responsibility was on us and the Modi family. We proved ourselves, and now it’s their turn.

You came in as a replacement on Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, and after a successful stint, you are now a mentor in the second season. How do you look back at your journey with the show? I still believe I am a newcomer. I think even after years, there’s so much to still learn. I don’t think I see myself as a mentor yet. However, it’s a loving team, and we are working hard and learning from each other through the course of the shoot.

Since television is said to be a woman’s medium, do you think it can bring about a change in their lives? Absolutely. We have had so many aunties and grandmothers who said they loved the show and want their daughters to be as strong as Gopi. It always had a positive impact. I also remember one of my friends who got married in New Zealand. Her mother-in-law would keep telling her that Gopi is your friend, be like her. And she complained to me that, how do I tell her that you are not like Gopi in real (laughs).

Sanjay Dutt responding well to treatment

Sanjay Dutt, who is battling cancer, has responded “very well” to the medical treatment, according to a family member. In August, the 61-year-old actor had announced that he would be taking a break from his professional commitments to focus on medical treatment, amid speculation that he was battling lung cancer. “The news was like he has got six months or this month to live, (but) it has never been that scene. He was detected with a kind of lung cancer for which treatment started in Mumbai and he has responded very well to the treatment,” a family member told PTI. “He went for his test today and the results have come out very good. With God’s grace and everyone’s blessings, he has responded very well,” the member added.

Rahul Vaidya on Bigg Boss 14: I don't believe in raising my voice to make a point

Bobby Deol-starrer Aashram season two to premiere in November Season two of filmmaker Prakash Jha’s web series Aashram, featuring actor Bobby Deol, is set to stream from November 11. Titled Aashram: Chapter 2 – The Dark Side, the season will premiere on MX Player. Directed by Jha, Aashram saw Deol, 51, as a self-styled godman Baba Nirala. “We’ve all worked very hard and with a lot of passion on this series and the response from the audience has made every bit of that worthwhile.

It took 10 offers over the years from the makers of Bigg Boss to get former Indian Idol participant and singer Rahul Vaidya's nod. "It seemed like the right time considering all ground events were cancelled and I was not preoccupied with concerts or live performances," he says. The popular reality show thrives on the contestants' mind games and power dynamics. Knowing that the format of the series tests a participant's physical prowess as well as his resilience, Vaidya hopes to rely on his wit and presence of mind. "I usually avoid the person who bothers me, but since I am locked up for three months with the housemates, I cannot avoid them. I don't believe in raising my voice to make a point. I will stand up for what is right. The idea is to be yourself as the camera captures your varied reactions."

This Kamala Harris Pic Needs No Caption But Got A Genius One Anyway

"When we vote, we win," Kamala Harris told people at the outdoor event in Jacksonville, Florida.

U

S Senator Kamala Harris won't let a bit of rain dampen her enthusiasm. The Democratic Vice Presidential nominee was filmed holding an umbrella while urging people to vote during a outdoor campaign event in Florida. She even managed to do a little jig onstage amid pouring rain while holding the umbrella in one hand - and a video of the moment is winning hearts on Twitter. Ms Harris, 55, had a doubleheader in Florida a few hours ago, according to Florida Politics. After speaking at Orlando,

she headed to rain-drenched Jacksonville for an outdoor, drive-in event. She was dressed in her signature Converse Chuck Taylors as she spoke to voters while shielding herself from the persistent rainfall. "When we vote, we win," Harris told carloads of people at the event, according to news website Jacksonville. The Democratic Vice Presidential candidate shared a picture from the event on social media with a genius caption. "Rain or shine, democracy waits for no one," she wrote.

2,000-Year-Old Cat Figure Found Etched In Peru Desert

A

rchaeologists in Peru have discovered a huge feline figure etched onto a hillside in the country. According to Peru's Ministry of Culture, the cat was carved into an arid hillside 2,000 years ago. The ancient geoglyph forms part of the Nazca Lines. The Nazca Lines are a collection of mysterious, gigantic geoglyphs - which are large designs or motifs produced on the ground - found south of the country's capital Lima. They were created around the first century CE by the ancient Nazca culture in South America. "The figure was barely visible and was about to disappear due to its location on a fairly steep slope and the effects of natural

erosion," writes the Peru's Ministry of Culture. It was discovered as archaeologists drew up plans for a new path leading to an observation platform. The cat geoglyph, which measures 120 feet in length, has been cleaned and restored since its discovery. In its statement, the ministry said that the figure dates from the Late Paracas period. Representations of felines of this type are frequent in the iconography of ceramics and textiles of the Paracas society, it said. Scientists and historians believe that the cat and other geoglyphs were created by making depressions in the desert floor to reveal the bedrock beneath.

Mukesh Ambani Specifies The New Yorker Suspends Reporter Jeffrey Toobin Three Legacy Areas For Him For Exposing Himself During Zoom Call

T

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd., said India must redefine its manufacturing sector to boost growth. "There is a need to rethink and redefine manufacturing in India. We need to strengthen our small and medium scale enterprises," Mr Ambani said at an online book launch on Monday evening, in response to a question on what can make Indian manufacturing more competitive. "There should be a focus on bricks as much as clicks." The comments from Asia's richest man come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is trying to revive an economy poised for a historic annual contraction, following a lockdown that decimated industries and destroyed millions of jobs. When asked about the legacy he'd like to leave behind, Ambani outlined three areas -- making India a digital society in ways never imagined before, boosting India's education system, and transformation of the energy sector to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. "If I can play my small part in achieving this, if I can create institutions to perpetuate and sustain these objectives, then I would have done my bit," Mr Ambani said.

h e Ne w Yo r k e r h a s suspended reporter Jeffrey To obin for exp osing himself during a Zoom video call with colleagues. Jeffrey Toobin served as staff writer for the American magazine and as chief legal analyst for CNN. According to Vice News, which first reported the matter, Mr Toobin was suspended for masturbating during a Zoom video chat between members of the New Yorker and WNYC radio last week. He says he did not realise his camera was on. Jeffrey Toobin has been suspended after "I made an embarrassingly stupid exposing himself during a Zoom call. mistake, believing I was off-camera. I apologize to my wife, family,

friends and co-workers," Mr Toobin told Vice News. "I believed I was not visible on Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video," he added. Two people who were on the video call spoke to the news website on the condition of anonymity and confirmed that they saw the renowned reporter exposing himself. Following the incident, the New Yorker has suspended their reporter while an investigation is on. New Yorker spokesperson Natalie Raabe said: "Jeffrey Toobin has been suspended while we investigate the matter."

for those in college and from about 24 per cent to 30 per cent for those not in school, say researchers at the University of Michigan and Texas State University. And alcohol abuse among both groups decreased by roughly half. However, the study found that the number of young adults using marijuana, as well as co-using alcohol and marijuana, has increased. Overall, the mixed findings show more positive than negative trends for alcohol and marijuana use and misuse among this age group, but the progression still bears close monitoring, the researchers say. The study, appearing in JAMA Pediatrics, examined how alcohol and marijuana abstinence, co-use and use disorders have changed in 18-to-22-year-olds as a function of college status, using data from a nationally representative survey of 182,722 young adults. It also looked at prescription drug use and misuse as a function of alcohol and marijuana use, from 2015 to 2018.

Fitness, posture and body weight are the key factors to strong knees. For knee health, we must include stretching exercises that take the knee through its full range of motion. The quadriceps and hamstrings are very important knee stabilisers and require regular strength training. Foot problems, such as over-pronation or flat feet may cause knee pain. A study conducted by University of South California identified that sitting in a squat is a far more active form of rest than sitting in a chair. It burns more calories and also strengthens the knee and associated muscles. Sitting in a squat as an isometric exercise is recommended for individuals with healthy knees. To maintain correct body weight we must be mindful of our diet and engage in regular physical activity. The lighter we are, the lesser we load our knees. Finally, preventing overuse of knees is vital. Running is great for health so long as high quality footwear is used. Also, sudden change in surface resistance while running, such as moving from asphalt to grass, can cause knee injury.

on October 10 while taking bath, following which she panicked and threw the baby out of the window into an alley. Later on, instead of informing anyone, Dookram cleaned the washroom, showered and took a nap. “I had a baby out of nowhere. I went

to the bathroom, and the baby popped out of me. I didn’t know what to do, I’m sorry. I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby. I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep,’’ Dookram said. Dookram told the investigators that she cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom. The infant, who survived the fall, was taken to a children’s hospital in a critical condition by the neighbours who discovered the baby after hearing his cry and later informed the police too, the report said. He had numerous injuries including brain bleeding, swelling of his brain, skull fracture. He was immediately put on a ventilator at the hospital and is still on life support in critical condition.

University of Houston Partners with AuraVax Therapeutics on Intranasal COVID-19 Vaccine

Prof.Navin Varadarajan. (uh.edu photo)

BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON, TX- The University of Houston Oct. 12 announced it has entered into an exclusive license option agreement with AuraVax Therapeutics Inc., a Houston, Texasbased biotech company developing novel vaccines to help patients defeat debilitating respiratory diseases such as COVID-19. Under the terms of the agreement, AuraVax has the option to exclusively license a new intranasal COVID-19 vaccine technology developed by Navin Varadarajan, M.D. Anderson Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, the release said. Varadarajan is also a co-founder of AuraVax. The vaccine is a nasal inhalant, like FluMist. “We plan to stop COVID-19, a respiratory virus, at its point of entry — the nasal cavity — and we believe our intranasal platform is a differentiated approach that will lead to a vaccine with increased efficacy to create sustained immunity to COVID-19,” said the Indian American professor in a statement. “AuraVax, being created by a UH professor, is the ideal partner for us, and what better cause than to advance the creation of a vaccine to COVID-19, arguably the primary challenge facing our generation. The partnership has my wholehearted support,” said Amr Elnashai, University of Houston vice president for research and technology transfer. The race for more effective ways of vaccinating against COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases has led to a broad and extensive focus on various protective mechanisms of action. Based on pre-clinical work, Varadarajan reports his technology not only elicits a mucosal immune response, but also systemic immunity, according to the university. “For airborne pathogens, the nasal compartment is the first point of defense that needs to be breached,” Varadarajan added. “Mucosal immunity and vaccines are fundamentally important for a wide range of pathogens including influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARSCoV) and the current SARS-CoV-2.” Varadarajan is using the spike protein, which helps the virus enter the target cell, and is the major target for neutralizing antibodies as it binds to the ACE 2 cellular receptor, for virus entry. He prefers using proteins because of their ability to induce strong immune responses, flexibility and scalability, and the absence of infectious particles, it says. “We believe AuraVax has a competitive advantage given the immune responses and a supply chain that is well-suited for widespread distribution and self-administration distribution,” added Varadarajan. “We are excited to be collaborating with the University of Houston and look forward to future success by advancing the development of this novel intranasal vaccine technology to address a multitude of respiratory viruses, starting with COVID-19.

Mayor Lightfoot and CDPH Commissioner Dr. Arwady Sound the Alarm on Second Wave of COVID-19 MAYOR’S PRESS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL – Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot today joined Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D., to sound the alarm on the worrying trends across COVID-19 health metrics, including a significant rise in cases, positivity rate and hospitalizations. Over the past two weeks, cases have risen by more than 50%, to over 500 per day. This is the most cases per day seen in Chicago since late May, the tail-end of the pandemic’s first wave, and is coinciding with a worrying increase in hospitalizations, which are also up 25% for non-ICU COVID patients and suspected cases since September 22. To combat this second wave of COVID-19, Mayor Lightfoot is calling on all residents to wear masks and strictly limit social gatherings, even small ones. In a gathering of only 10 people, there is a 14% chance that someone is currently infected with COVID-19. To further fight the spread of COVID-19, the City is considering additional measures in the coming days, including bringing back restrictions on businesses. “The data is clear - we are now in a second surge of COVID-19 and I am extremely concerned,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Now is the time to double down on what we know works and come together as a city to flatten the curve once again. Everyone must do their part to keep themselves and others safe and help us overcome this deadly disease.” Over the last two weeks in particular, Chicago has seen an alarming increase across COVID-19 health metrics. While this increase has coincided with an increase in testing, with close to 11,000 tests now completed each day, the test positivity rate has also increased more than a percentage point to 5.2%. This indicates that the increase in testing does not fully explain the rise in cases. Furthermore, hospitalizations, a measure of severe outcomes which often lags behind an increase in cases, are up to 313 per day citywide. Deaths, too, usually lag an increase in cases and hospitalizations, so City officials are expressing great concern over the

Representative image

possibility of a further increase. Over 3,000 Chicagoans have died from COVID-19. “I’m deeply concerned about these trends and worried that we’ve got some COVID fatigue setting in where people are not following the public health guidance as they should. This virus doesn’t care who you are, it’s just looking to spread, and if we give it the opportunity to do so it will,” said Dr. Arwady. “Most troubling is the fact that COVID-19 continues to have a disproportionate impact on Black and Latinx individuals, and those with under-lying medical conditions. But we’re seeing a rise in cases across the city and across all races and ethnicities, so we all need to rededicate ourselves to combatting this epidemic.” Mayor Lightfoot and Dr. Arwady are calling on all residents to recognize the seriousness of this second wave of COVID-19 and take the necessary personal steps to stem the tide. Specifically, all residents need to wear masks or face coverings anytime they are in a public space or unable to maintain six feet of social distancing. Furthermore, residents should avoid social gatherings, even small get-togethers. The more individuals that are a part of your “bubble”, the greater the risk of COVID19 transmission. In a gathering of ten people, there’s a 14% chance one person in that group has COVID-19.That means one out of every seven gatherings of ten people has COVID-19 present. This likelihood of someone having COVID-19

increases as gathering sizes grow - there is a 50% chance that someone in a gathering of 50 people has COVID-19. The majority of COVID-19 cases in Chicago are spread between people that know each other, so the best way to stem the tide is to avoid social gatherings and keep your bubble small. To further fight the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, the City is prepared to take drastic but necessary steps in the coming days. This may include a rollback of COVID-19 reopening regulations for businesses, including potentially restricting capacity and limiting total gathering size and/or returning to Phase Three of the reopening framework. “Chicago is at a critical moment in the ongoing fight against COVID-19,” said Dr. Nancy Glick of Sinai Health System’s Infectious Disease Division. “We have learned a great deal about this virus since the first surge, including what works to stop the spread. It is more important than ever to commit to those strategies - wearing a mask, limiting social gatherings and ultimately saving lives.” The significant increase of COVID-19 in Chicago corresponds with a second wave of the virus throughout the entire Chicagoland region, across Illinois, in other Midwestern states and throughout the country. As a reminder, the City’s Emergency Travel Order currently covers 26 states and territories, including Wisconsin and Indiana. Chicagoans are urged not to travel to these states and territories, and if they do they are required to quarantine for 14 days upon their return, unless they are an essential worker traveling for business. For Wisconsin and Indiana, the Order applies to individuals coming from Wisconsin or Indiana to Chicago for non-work purposes and Chicago residents returning from Wisconsin or Indiana, unless they are deemed an essential worker. World Restart A Heart Day: CPR Guidlines During COVID-19 for Outof-Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrests

Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy , an advocate of Community and Physician resuscitation education and training for more than three decades in USA and India, is a past President of the Chicago Medical Society and current adjunct Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois @ Chicago College of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. He is the Founder of Chicago Medical Society’s Community CPR Project SMILE (Saving More Illinois Lives through Education). In a recent interview, Dr. Vemuri Murthy shared his thoughts and concerns regarding current status of the out- of- hospital cardiac arrests and diminishing bystander resuscitation help during COVID-19 pandemic. According to the American Heart Association, there are more than 356,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually in the U.S. (2018 update).Nearly 90% of them are fatal. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chances of survival. In majority of cases, immediate Hands-only CPR may have similar survival outcomes comparable to the conventional CPR performed with both chest compressions and breaths. Global evidence-based information has proven that Bystander CPR is life-saving in sudden cardiac arrest. The latter is recognized by sudden collapse of the person without any breathing, pulse or consciousness. It’s important to call 911 first before performing Hands-only CPR. The bystander performing CPR needs to cover the mouth and nose fully with a face mask or cloth. The victim’s mouth and nose must be covered too with a face mask or cloth. Performing Hands-Only CPR involves pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) needs to be utilized as soon as it’s available. This high-quality CPR should be continued by the bystander until the arrival of paramedics. It’s important to follow the Good Samaritan Laws of a particular US State while performing Bystander CPR. Personal protection from any potential droplet infection is of paramount importance while managing any person in cardiac arrest, as the COVID-19 status of the victim may be unknown. The bystander needs to thoroughly wash the hands with soap and water after providing CPR. Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy (Chicago Medical Society’s COVID-19 Task Force) appeals for practicing three basic preventive measures during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Wearing a Mask covering the mouth and nose, Washing Hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, and watching social distancing of at least 6 feet.

Indian American Neurologist’s Charges Dismissed by Northern California Fedral Court BY A STAFF WRITER SACRAMENTO, CA - A federal district court in Sacramento, California, Oct. 9 dismissed an indictment filed in 2018 against neurologist Dr. Firdos Sheikh. The case against Sheikh, a prominent Indian American neurologist who had been charged with forced labor, was widely covered by news outlets in Sacramento, with the doctor and her counsel, from the start, vigorously maintaining her innocence. Recently, the court considered a motion to dismiss the case on the basis that the government’s two-year failure to disclose exculpatory material supporting Sheikh’s innocence delayed her case significantly, pushing it into the COVID-19 pandemic, and depriving her of her constitutional and statutory right to a speedy trial, according to a press release. In dismissing the case, the court noted that, “Given the evidence presented in previous motions, the court can well understand the basis for defendant’s righteous frustration over not being able to have her case heard and decided when it could have.”

Representative image

Said Sheikh in a statement: “This entire prosecution has been a nightmare for me and my family. I have been trying to plead my innocence for years and I am thankful the court dismissed the case.” The court found that it could have continued the trial date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as other courts have, but chose to not continue Sheikh’s case because continuing the case would not serve the ends of justice, according to the release. “The court thoughtfully weighed the interest of Dr. Sheikh and the public and came to the only fair conclusion. It is more important now than ever for prosecutors to set priorities,

examine evidence carefully, and pursue only righteous cases,” Yasin M. Almadani, counsel for Sheikh and a former federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of California, said in a statement. “In this case, the court found that the government had not disclosed exculpatory evidence showing significant weaknesses in its case. Dr. Sheikh is an honest, hardworking woman who should never have been prosecuted,” Almadani added. In its ruling, the court praised the American federal justice system as “the envy of the world,” and recognized its obligation “to safeguard the health and safety of the citizens it orders” to jury service, the release said. The court’s order brought to light the multitude of issues courts currently face due to the COVID-19 pandemic and how each court must assess each case independently to determine what justice dictates. Sheikh’s dismissal appears to be a unique situation precipitated by the government’s delay in producing evidence supporting Sheikh’s innocence, the release said.

Indian American Teen Creates Writing Contest for High School Students in New york BY A STAFF WRITER BRONX, ,NY- Vishnu Bharathram, an Indian American 17-year-old senior at Riverdale Country School, in Bronx, New York, last month organized a creative “Scribe Writing Contest,” in the midst of COVID-19, to help provide a pleasant distraction from the current state of events and encourage teenagers to use their imaginations. “Nobody could have expected or prepared for the devastating effects that the coronavirus would bring this year,” said Bharathram, in a press release. “Many of us have been isolated at home. Schools went remote. A lot of stores and businesses are closed. Aside from the security concerns caused by this illness, a lot of teens are just bored. Creative writing provides an avenue for people to express their thoughts and their creativity and a space to imagine something different into being.” The Scribe Writing Contest was a free, online high school creative writing contest open

Vishnu Bharathram

to students all over the world. Students were given a 24-hour window in which to start their essay and had to submit either a poem or short story, within two hours, in response to specific prompts that were given immediately prior to beginning the contest. Bharathram personally reached out to distinguished English and creative writing professors from across the country and selected

seven of them to serve as judges for the contest. In addition, six nonprofit literary publishing companies sponsored the contest with cash prizes and books for the winners, awarding $2,750 in cash prizes to each of the winners. The contest received an overwhelming response, with almost 900 submissions from teens in 17 countries, spanning six continents, noted the release. The participants expressed their appreciation for providing a brief distraction from some of the stress they had been dealing with in their day-to-day lives, and in a changing environment, due to COVID-19. There will be another contest next May to provide a creative outlet for more teens, the release added. The young teen also created “The Scribe Review,” the only nonprofit journal in the world dedicated to publishing the academic English essays of high school students, according to the release. Its first issue was published in August 2020.

Indian American High School Senior Writes Textbook on Artificial Intelligence BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA- An Indian American high school senior in Northern California has published a textbook focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Siddharth Sharma, a senior at San Jose, California-based BASIS Independent Silicon Valley, published the 280-page, “A Guide to Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and its Applications,” with a team of high schoolers around the U.S., he told India-West in an email. The book is available on Amazon for $14.99, and, according to Sharma, has sold “several copies across four countries.” Additionally, the book has been endorsed by professors at Stanford University, the teen boasted. “The idea for the book came through a nonprofit organization that I started, StartOnAI,” he explained. “I established StartOnAI two years ago when I saw that AI and machine learning

is not accessible to most students and requires advanced math and computer science knowledge to get started,” Sharma added. “Currently, we have a team of 25 students from across the United States and 3 total countries. We have published over 24 tutorials on our site for students and beginners.” StartOnAI was also recognized by the White House and inducted into the

CSforALL education consortium, Sharma noted. A Guide to Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and its Applications is a full breakdown of AI and explains the content smoothly, without knowledge of prerequisites like advanced math and programming knowledge. At time of press, the textbook had a 4.8-star rating on eight reviews on Amazon. One reviewer said, “As an ML student myself, I think this book would serve anyone well who want to quickly expand and consolidate their ML knowledge and implementation abilities.” Another wrote, “Anyone who wants to get into this exponentially rising field in our world today should definitely take advantage of this book and all of its conceptual depictions and the practical applications that allow one to gain sufficient knowledge to have a very strong foundational understanding in Artificial Intelligence.

Indian-American Sex Offender Arrested by CBP on O’Hare Airport

Duraikandan Murugan

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- An Indian-American sex offender has been arrested at an airport in the US while trying to flee the country on the passport of his friend, officials here have said. Duraikandan Murugan, 41, the subject of a pending criminal case in New Jersey related to attempted sexual assault of a minor, was arrested at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Monday during a routine enforcement interview of passengers departing the US, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said on Wednesday. Murugan, who presented an Indian passport and boarding pass issued to Elvis Dias, was selected for an interview. During the interview, the passenger’s wallet and carry-on luggage were searched, which yielded several documents issued to Murugan. Mobile biometric verification was conducted, which revealed a pending criminal case against him related to attempted sexual assault of a minor. During questioning, Murugan “freely admitted” he was Duraikandan Murugan and stated he had taken the passport of his friend Dias to leave the United States to see his ailing father, the CBP said in a statement. Murugan was held by CBP in Chicago on suspected violations of US immigration law. Additionally, the CBP contacted the State of New Jersey, Somerset County Prosecutors Office to advise them of Murugan’s detention in Chicago. State authorities in New Jersey issued an arrest warrant for Murugan for using a passport belonging to another to board an international flight. Murugan was turned over to the Chicago Police who will coordinate extradition back to New Jersey, the statement said. “We work closely with state, local and federal law enforcement partners to identify individuals that are fugitives from the law and bring them to justice,” said Shane Campbell, Area Port Director-Chicago.

White crop tops with blue jeans The two shades paired together never seem to go out of style and have made a soft spot in these celebrity's wardrobes.

Milind Soman-Ankita perform yoga asana at a beach in US

W

hen it feels like you have nothing to wear, your closet is falling apart and you can't find an outfit that goes together, the one combination you can always fall back on is the white top and blue jeans one. Well, it seems like celebrities too fall back on the same idea! They opt for the simple combination of a white crop top paired with blue jeans to make for a casual yet chic look. Take a look at some of our favourites.

Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar’s passion for fitness is not unknown, and together the duo recently gave us couple workout goals. Ankita recently took to Instagram to post a picture of the two performing a yoga asana at the Sandy Hook Beach along the Atlantic Ocean, as they spend their time in the US. In the picture, the couple is seen doing the Chakrasana or Urdhva Dhanurasana, also called the Wheel Pose. “Some madness next to the Atlantic Ocean…Because what is love, if not being stupid together?” the 29-year-old captioned the picture.

Kombucha for skin 3 SURPRISING ways that this drink can spice up your skincare routine

Unique grey living room ideas for a Vibrant look Grey colour is often considered to be boring and dull. But it can actually work wonders when paired with right shades and accents. Here are some captivating grey living room ideas to make a statement. Grey with natural accessories

If you want to keep your grey living room very subtle yet stylish, then use natural accessories in it like woven baskets, sculptural artwork, wooden or cane armchair, etc. These things will create a cosy vibe with the grey shade.

Complement with light tones

To create a more traditional look in your grey living room, use light tones in areas like white ceiling, cream cloth chairs, arched window with intricate details.

The latest wellness trend that almost everybody is obsessed with, is consuming kombucha which is nothing but slightly fermented tea Have you always craved for bright, dewy and luminous skin? One product that seems to be the cause for that, is Kombucha. It is a drink that looks a lot like iced tea but is actually a fermented version of black or green tea. It is mixed with sugar and SCOBY, a bacteria that multiples over time and is the basic ingredient of this healthy beverage. When left to ferment, a ga is produced which makes this fizzy. This drink is a cult favourite and is known to promote healthy skin. Here's how!

B Vitamins

The main ingredient in Kombucha is B vitamins like B2, B6 and B12 that are often found in skincare products.

Consuming this beverage enables the skin to make the most of these ingredients and glow.

Hydrates skin

Since it is consumed in liquid form and is made mostly out of water, this beverage hydrates you and your skin and leaves it feeling plump. Since it is hydrated, the skin's elasticity too improves drastically, reducing fine lines and signs of ageing in the process.

Improves skin tone

Tea is known to be excellent for skin and have antioxidant properties. This fermented version too, comes with all the same benefits of green and black tea, leaving your skin bright, improving clarity and texture.

For an airy environment

You don’t need to add a dark coloured object to make a statement in the room. You can have all light shades to give your living room an airy atmosphere. Grey sofa, a rug and white coffee table with some lights accents on a white wall will look good.

Grey accent wall

If you don’t want to put grey colour everywhere, then create an accent wall with it. Have a charcoal coloured wall in between white walls and put some large accents on it like painting or artwork.

Smart speakers

29

Harman Kardon Allure

Harman Kardon Allure is a compact nice looking device that comes with Alexa voice control. The maximum output of the speaker is 60W. It has 10 hours of play time and can be used outdoors as well while chilling on the balcony. Charging the speaker is easy as it comes with a charging cradle. For calls, it has built-in two microphone array equipped with noise cancellation technology. Also, it comes with 360 degree immersive sound and weighs 1.1 kg.

Bose Home Speaker 300

Google will discontinue its emergency location sharing app Trusted Contacts in December, and has already yanked it from the Google Play Store. Instead, it’s directing existing users to try similar but less helpful features in Google Maps. That’s a shame, because while Trusted Contacts could let you find a family member even if they don’t respond (say, if they are unconscious or in danger), Google Maps requires them to proactively broadcast their location to you.

OnePlus brand builder Carl Pei has left the smartphone company

There are options available if you want a more premium sounding smart speaker that can also do the job of a TV soundbar and a mini party speaker.

Bose may not be the best smart speaker but it surely is one of the best when it comes to sound quality. It has Google Assistant and Alexa built-in. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Apple AirPlay 2 compatibility and the Bose Music app is capable of controlling all music services in one. Users can even band more Bose speakers together. There are plenty of touch controls on the top of the speakers including the mute button and three different presets. It can pick up a user’s voice easily with the help of a six-microphone array. The sound is loud enough. The Bose Home speaker 300 weighs just 948 grams

Google Nest Audio If you are really the Google-everything type, then the Google Nest is the ideal smart speaker for you. It cannot be much smarter now, but the audio quality could have been better.

N

est Audio smart speakers from Google powered by the Google Assistant. Google has stopped using the Home branding for its smart speakers with the launch of the two latest versions — Nest and Nest Mini. And with the larger one, the design has also been changed. The Nest Audio speaker stands tall, but is thin and has curved edges. Unlike the earlier version, it is covered all over with fabric and the LEDs are just in front behind the cloth. Setting up is easy and you just need to download the Google Home app and follow instructions. There are no physical buttons on the device, but that does not mean you cannot control the music from it. There is a stop button on the top flanked by volume up and down on the sides. You don’t see it but they are there and you will get used to it. Also, it makes sense of hiding the physical buttons because the hero here is clearly voice and that is what Google wants you to use instead of plus and minus signs.

Noise cancelling It’s been tough to talk about OnePlus as a scrappy smartphone startup ever since its close ties with Oppo, Vivo, and electronics giant BBK came to light, but it’s still hard to overstate the impact of Carl Pei, the longtime public face of the company, who confirmed his departure today. As a marketer and brand builder, he used a combination of bold promises, real talk, and unconventional marketing campaigns to turn smartphone enthusiasts simply looking for a good deal into a community of OnePlus fans.

Tesla’s seven-day return policy has been quietly removed Tesla has reportedly canceled an audacious return policy in which new buyers of its electric vehicles could return them for a full refund within seven days. The news, reported on Friday by Electrek, marks an end to one of CEO Elon Musk’s flashier marketing strategies. Musk has used the seven-day return policy as a way to boast about Tesla’s high customer satisfaction rates, with the company so confident new buyers would be happy with their purchase that they wouldn’t take Tesla up on its bold offer, which is practically unheard of in the standard automobile industry.

sound. However, if you want to turn it up a notch, the bass can be adjusted via the app as well. There are touch controls available to pause, play, or turning up/down the volume. The headphones can be automatically connected to the device. Users need to swivel it back to turn it off. The battery life can last up to 30 hours on a single charge. There is a 3.5mm audio jack as well in case you want to connect it with your phone or laptop.

These headphones are not too heavy, comfortable to wear, support active noise cancellation, and offer quality sound for those who pay attention to every detail. Sennheiser PXC 550-II If you are looking for a lightweight headphone and your usage is high every day, Sennheiser PXC 550-II headphone is a good fit. This headphone weighs just 222 grams so you don’t get tired of keeping them on for long hours. The German audio major’s headphone is easily portable and the cushioned ear cups sit comfortably on the ears. It is compatible with voice assistants like Google, Siri and Alexa. The sound signature of the headphone is more Sennheiser-like, not too bass-heavy and offers complete

Bose has been a leading brand in the audio segment for a long time. The noise cancellation is top-notch and the headphone is currently available on Amazon in two colours — black and silver. The headphone is slightly heavier than the Sennheiser PXC 550-II weighing at 235.87 grams. The Google Assistant can be turned on by a dedicated button on the left ear cup but you need to sync it with the Bose app first. You can even remap it to turn on noise cancellation.

Marshall Monitor II Marshall Monitor II offers a bit of style which was missing from the first two headphones with minimalistic designs. The texture is different on the sides of earcups and there is a golden touch on one side. It offers 30 hours of play time with noise cancellation and 15 hours more with it disabled. The sound signature is good but there are not many tweaks you can make here. The Marshall Monitor II is on a little heavier side weighing at 320 grams.
