Trump’s image slips, Clinton steady: Poll Trump’s net favorable rating slipped to -33 for mid-June from -28 in the first week of May: Gallup IANS, WASHINGTON

A

mericans’ views of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump have drifted slightly more negative over the past month and a half, while his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s image remains steady, according to a Gallup poll. Trump’s net favourable rating slipped to -33 for mid-June, from 28 in the first week of May, according to the poll released on June 21. At the same time, Americans’ view of Clinton has remained significantly less negative and more stable, with a current -13 net favourable rating, Xinhua cited the Gallup as saying. By this point in an election cycle, when each party’s nomination has been clinched, candidates typically have had a more positive image than has been the case for Clinton and Trump. Since 1992, Gallup has tracked a few presidential candidates with a negative net rating in June and July of an election year, Gallup found. The last month and a half has been an eventful period for both candidates. Trump for instance secured the number of delegates he

US Senate rejects gun control measures WASHINGTON: The US Senate on June 20 failed to muster the votes to pass any of several competing bills aimed at making it more difficult for potentially dangerous individuals to purchase firearms. Popular revulsion over the deaths of 49 people in the June 12 mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, prompted lawmakers in both parties to put forward proposals. Republicans and Democrats submitted bills to restrict sales of guns to suspected extremists and to bolster the current system of background checks that applies to a substantial proportion of firearms purchases, EFE news agency reported. But none of the measures garnered the 60 votes necessary to move forward. Most Democrats rejected the Republican proposals as inadequate, while the majority of GOP senators found their rivals’ ideas —IANS too restrictive.

Briton ‘wanted to shoot Trump’ WASHINGTON: A Briton who tried to grab a police officer’s gun at presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s rally in Las Vegas said he wanted to shoot the the billionaire, court papers said. Michael Steven Sandford, 20, who is charged with an act of violence “on restricted grounds”, did not enter a plea when he appeared before a judge in Nevada and was remanded in custody until a hearing on July 5, BBC reported. Sandford had tried to seize the gun after saying he was seeking Trump’s autograph at June 19 rally. The man said he was planning and trying to shoot Trump for about a year but had decided to act now because he finally felt confident enough to do so, papers said. A federal judge found Sandford, who appeared in court in shackles,

needed to win the nomination. He also attracted a great deal of attention by questioning the impartiality of the federal judge who is hearing a case in which he was being sued by a former student

to be a danger and risk of nonappearance. When asked about Sandford’s arrest, a Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing assistance following an arrest of a British national in Las Vegas.” Earlier, Trump fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski who oversaw his triumph in the primary contests. —IANS

of Trump University who claimed he did not get his money’s worth. Both candidates also made highly publicised comments following the tragic shootings earlier this month in Florida, which underscored how

each might handle such an event as commander-in-chief. Americans’ views of Clinton improved modestly after she secured her party’s nomination early the month, but that basically represented a return to where her image had been in early May -better than Trump’s but still negative. On the other hand, Americans’ views of Trump began to worsen in the final weeks of May and have continued to slip since.

Importantly, the trend reflects a slow slide, rather than an abrupt change in response to any specific event of the past month and a half. Gallup has been tracking the US public’s views of Clinton and Trump since mid-July 2015. Since then, both candidates’ images have become more negative. Americans’ views of Clinton have consistently been more positive compared to Trump, with the exception of a brief period last August.

US urging NSG members to back India’s bid IANS, WASHINGTON

A

mid China’s reluctance to back India’s NSG bid, the US said it will continue to urge countries in the 48-member bloc to support India’s membership application at the plenary session in Seoul this week. US State Department spokesperson John Kirby, answering a query regarding China’s stance on India’s membership, also said that the US reaffirms that India was ready for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Kirby said: “We continue to call on the participating governments of the NSG to support India’s application at the plenary session in Seoul.” He said that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington this month, US President Barack Obama welcomed India’s application to join the NSG and reaffirmed that India is ready for membership”.

“And nothing’s changed about our position,” he said. Asked if the US has had any opportunity to take up the NSG issue with China, Kirby said: “This is something that we have - India’s application is something we have routinely talked to other NSG participating members. This is not a new topic of discussion that we’ve

had privately with the members.” China stated on Monday that the NSG was divided over admitting India and that New Delhi’s application for membership was not on the agenda of the June 2324 plenary. “The NSG is still divided about non-NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) countries entry into

the NSG and under the current circumstances we hope that NSG will make thorough discussions to make a decision based on consultation,” China’s Foreign Ministry said. “The inclusion of non-NPT members has never been a topic on the agenda of NPT meetings. In Seoul this year, there is no such topic,” it said. China has been opposed to India’s membership to the bloc that controls global nuclear trade on the grounds that it is not a signatory to the NPT. Beijing has also said if New Delhi is admitted, then so should Islamabad, its all-weather ally. India, which finds the NPT discriminatory in nature, has been backed by the US, Switzerland, Mexico, Italy, Russia and Britain. Countries like New Zealand and South Africa oppose India’s entry. Consensus among member countries is essential to allow a new entrant.

eople of 135 nationalities joined the International Yoga Day festivities on June 21 at the UN, celebrating its universality and relevance to the world body’s mission. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev led several hundred people through a series of simple yoga exercises in front of the glass-fronted UN tower under a brilliant midday sun, with a cool breeze floating in from the East River. He demonstrated ‘Upayoga,’ the simplified introductory form of the ancient holistic science, which, he said, can easily be adapted to practice in everyday settings. The Yoga Day celebrations at the UN this year, emceed by Miss

America 2014, Nina Davuluri, focused on the ancient Indian tradition’s role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by world leaders last year. UN General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft said yoga can act to strengthen our unity with nature and with one another. Meanwhile, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent a message that the Yoga Day this year “highlights the important role healthy living plays in the realization of the SDGs.” “Practicing yoga can also help raise awareness of our role as consumers of the planet’s resources and as individuals with a duty to respect and live in peace with our neighbors,” he said.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup posted pictures of Yoga Day celebrations at Indian missions from across the world — in UAE, Tunisia, Sudan, Iraq, Astana, Bishkek, Kabul and

events were also held in Africa, mainly in South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe. A dozen yoga practitioners stood in posture of namastey atop the Sydney Harbour Bridge with the rising sun forming a beautiful backdrop. The Hindu Council of Australia collaborated in hosting the world’s first yoga event atop Sydney Harbour Bridge. At the European Parliament, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was the main guest as he led the International Yoga Day celebrations. An Indian Youth Delegation to China celebrated the occasion in the southern Chinese city of Guilin. International Day of Yoga was also celebrated at Wuxi Hollywood Studios in Jiangsu, as well as in Simatai and Xi’an and at the Great Wall. special event was held at a park in Egypt’s capital Cairo on June 21 night to mark the second International Day of Yoga. More than 100 yoga enthusiasts gathered to practice yoga on the grass and enjoy some traditional performances organized by the Embassy of India in Egypt, Xinhua news agency reported. “We have noticed strong growth in the practice of yoga in

Egypt over the last year, both in popularity and in the expertise of the yogis,” said Sanjay Bhattacharyya, the Indian ambassador.

“We are proud of Egypt’s support of IDY (the International Day of Yoga). This has encouraged us to reach out wider to students and other groups and to host the event in a large public park,” he added. As a healthy lifestyle and a physical, mental practice originated from India, yoga now is popular around the world. On December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

s part of the series of events to mark the second “International Day of Yoga’, the Embassy of India in Paris organized an event at the iconic Eiffel Tower on June19. The event attracted an overwhelming number of yoga enthusiasts but “due to space constraints and security reasons, we had to restrict the number of participants”, the Embassy said in its Facebook page. “More than 300 Yoga enthusiasts participated in the celebrations,” the statement added. The event commenced with a meditation session by the teachers of the Shivananda Yoga Centre in Paris. Speaking on the occasion,

Indian Ambassador to France Mohan Kumar emphasized the importance of yoga for a healthy and balanced life. “I am glad to be part of this international yoga festival in

Paris. It can be said that Euro Cup and Yoga Day are the most rocking events in France now,” said Satish Reddy, Managing Director, World News Network who participated in the event.

It is not what you will get from yoga, but what is important is what you will give to yoga and what all (ailments) will it rid you off,” he said early in the morning in a nearly 30-minute speech before the yoga session.

Yoga, the prime minister said, could give “health assurance at zero budget” and it should be made a part of everyone’s daily life for peace and harmony. Mass yoga events were held in schools, public places, lawns of residential localities and office complexes across thousands of Indian villages, cities, and towns — from the deserts of Rajasthan to eastern

planes and from the Himalayan heights to high seas — on naval warships — down south. The celebrations of the day and yoga performances even went high up in the sky at 35,000 feet above Earth on some morning flights. Modi, in a white T-shirt and a payjama with a stole around his neck, led from the front in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex.

Stretching on a mat and staring at the overcast Chandigarh skies, he himself performed the asanas among the crowd of over 30,000 yoga enthusiasts. “Yoga binds body, mind, intelligence and soul. It provides a balance to mind and body. Anyone can do it anywhere,” said Modi, a keen yoga enthusiast on whose proposal the UN marked June 21 to be celebrated as the International Yoga Day every year. In the run-up to the celebrations, the government had created a huge hype to popularize the event, asking people to organize ceremonies for mass participations.

ore than 1,600 pregnant women in Gujarat’s Rajkot city claim to have set a new Guinness record on the International Yoga Day by performing a special kind of “pre-natal” yoga on June 21. With this they broke a world record set by around 900 pregnant females by taking part in group yoga. Rajkot District Collector Vikrant Pandey said the exercise session by the pregnant females was carried out under the observation of over 100 doctors and guidance of yoga trainers from Haridwar.

“Criteria of Guinness World Records were followed in order to create the new record. It required participants who would have pregnancy of at least 12 weeks. Against the requirement of 30 minutes session, the pregnant ladies in Rajkot performed yoga for 47 minutes,” Pandey said. “All the essential approvals were taken from the Guinness administration. We will send videography and other important documents to register the Rajkot women as new record holder,” he added. Pandey also said efforts would be initiated to popularize pre-natal yoga among pregnant women.

aking on those linking yoga to Hindu religion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on June 21 that yoga was no religious activity and people must embrace it for better mental and physical health. Addressing over 30,000 yoga enthusiasts at ‘City Beautiful’ Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex, Modi also said that the UNdeclared International Day of Yoga had become the biggest global mass movement. The rain gods, who had given a scare just hours ahead of the yoga event, kept away during the nearly one hour session on June 21 morning. However, minutes after the event ended, Chandigarh received rains again. “Yoga is not a religious activity. Many people do not understand yoga completely. It is not what you will get from yoga but what is important is what you will give to yoga and what all (ailments) will it rid you of.” He said yoga was for both believers and non-believers, and

Modi said among all days marked by the UN, no day has equalled the mass movement the International Yoga Day has become there was no need to create any controversy over it. “It helps in getting mukti (sal-

vation) from health issues,” Modi said, in an attempt to de-link the belief among some that yoga was a part of Hinduism. “Among all days marked by the UN, no day has equalled the mass movement the International Yoga Day has become. It has become the biggest mass movement worldwide,” said Modi, who was instrumental in getting the UN to declare June 21 as the International Yoga Day.

NEW CIVIL AVIATION POLICY A GOOD STEP

The policy breaks new ground in the promotion of the aviation sector in the country. (File photo)

The policy is a step in the right direction for industry and consumers and fixes responsibility clearly on various bodies regulating the sector. It is well articulated and it is hoped it will be well implemented for the benefit of all the stakeholders. AMIT KAPOOR , GURGAON

T

he union cabinet last week approved the much-awaited civil aviation policy. The policy, which has been instituted in an integrated format for the first time since independence, breaks new ground in the promotion of the aviation sector in the country. Various aspects are touched upon in the policy but broadly there are four areas where the policy breaks new ground. These include: First and foremost is partial doing away with the 5/20 rule. This offers newer players, entering the market and in the market at present, a

chance to compete with the incumbents in the industry. In this way, it is a right step. The 20 aircraft clause, which still exists, will ensure that there is sufficient experience/risk taking ability before going international. The 20 aircraft requirement is also modified to add 20 percent seats of total capacity, whichever is higher, for domestic operations. The second important aspect of the policy is from the viewpoint of the industrial development of the sector. The policy clearly spells this out in the promotion of the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhauling) as well as in skill building around the sector. The MRO business of Indian carriers is around Rs

5,000 crore, 90 per cent of which is spent outside India. The policy intends to correct the duty structure on this and even look at the provision of land in this regard for building MRO facilities. Also, a royalty break will be given to providers for an initial period of five years. With regard to skilling, the policy estimates that by 2025 about 330,000 additional employment will be required. For this, the policy states that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MOCA) will support skillimparting organizations for imparting skills necessary for India's growing aviation sector. In this way, the policy promotes business creation as well as the creation of skills required

in the sector. The third important aspect of the policy is from the viewpoint of consumer interest. The policy mentions a figure of Rs 2,500 per passenger for a one-hour flight. It is part of the regional connectivity scheme, which has benefits for airline operators as well. It includes reduced excise duty at two percent on ATF prices and operations viability gap funding (VGF) to airline operators. The VGF funding will be in the ratio of 80:20 between MOCA and state governments and 90:10 between MOCA and the northeastern states. It will help to drive regional connectivity in areas which were hitherto unconnected or poorly connected by way of airlines.

The final important feature is the route dispersal guidelines, which categorizes domestic operations into three categories. The policy is, thus, timely as it comes when India is expected to become the third largest aviation market by 2020. The policy also looks at both the supply side and demand side to strike a balance for greater services to the common man. It also creates a level playing field for newer players in the market and tries to enable greater competition. From the view point of the consumers and industry, the policy is well thought through and makes the case for a better-connected India through the mode of aviation.

The month-long air-sea campaign, slated to begin on June 24, will see the deployment of two ships, six gliders (diving to 500 metres every two hours) and eight floats (automated submersibles) that can rise and descend to 2,000 metres. Together with the sophisticated instruments aboard a special aircraft, they will collect a range of atmospheric and oceanic data that the British scientists claim will help forecast the arrival and intensity of the Indian monsoon "more accurately than ever before." Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had in 1975 stipulated that "investigations in these areas by foreigners or by foreign assisted programmes should be subjected to the most careful

rime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that India was now the most open economy in the world for FDI with most sectors were under automatic approval route. Putting its economic liberalization agenda on the fast track, India on Monday relaxed its foreign equity norms further, notably in defense, aviation, pharmaceuticals and retailing, with automatic approval rather than a case-based route as the preferred model. Modi said in a tweet that the amendments in FDI policy will promote ease of doing business and India was rated as number one FDI destination by several international agencies. “India now the most open economy in the world for FDI; most sectors under automatic approval route,” he said. BJP MP Girri ends hunger strike NEW DELHI: BJP’s East Delhi MP Maheish Girri, who was protesting outside Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence since Sunday, broke his fast-unto-death on Tuesday on the urging of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Rajnath Singh on Tuesday evening reached the Civil Lines where Girri was sitting on a hunger strike and persuaded him “not to put his life at stake”. Girri was on fast-unto-death since Sunday after Kejriwal declined to join an open debate over his accusation that the Bharatiya Janata Party MP was involved in the murder of a New Delhi Municipal Council estate officer M.M. Khan. Rajnath Singh assured Girri that the police in its investigation has not find anything against him and hence he should not be disturbed by the allegations levelled due to political malice. “Everywhere in the society people are praising the moral courage and the works of Maheish Girri. It is necessary that he should disregard the allegations levelled due to political malice and concentrate on human service,” he said. The Home Minister offered Girri a glass of juice, which he drank to break his two-day fast. “I challenged Kejriwal for a debate over his accusation. It has been three days but he didn’t turn up. So, its their defeat. I am going to end my hunger strike,” Girri said in presence of Rajnath Singh.

SHIMLA: Former Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday said allowing 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in defense meant “surrendering” to the pressure of the US lobby, a threat to national security and India’s foreign policy. He said the decision came just after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US. “Allowing 100 percent FDI in defense means India’s defense sector is thrown mostly into the hands of American companies. The nation-

Now Swamy seeks removal of chief economic adviser IANS, NEW DELHI

fter his no-holds barred attack on the RBI Governor, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday picked on a new target — demanding the removal of Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian. However, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley came out in strong defense of the noted economist while the BJP distanced itself from Swamy’s remarks. The Congress termed Swamy the ‘undeclared spokesperson’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and noted that Jaitley was the real target of Swamy as he wanted to be Finance Minister.

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy (R) created a flutter with his tweets demanding sacking of Arvind Subramanian.

Swamy had publicly attacked RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, saying he was “mentally not fully

Indian” and also written to the Prime Minister demanding that he be denied an extension. Last week,

Rajan announced that he was not taking a second term. On Wednesday, Swamy created a flutter with his tweets demanding sacking of Subramanian. “Who said to US Cong on 13/3/13 the US should act against India to defend US Pharmaceuticals interests? Arvind Subramanian MoF (Ministry of Finance)!! Sack him!” “Guess who encouraged Congress to become rigid on GST clauses? Jaitley’s economic adviser Arvind Subramanian of Washington DC.” Subramanian had taken charge as chief economic adviser to finance ministry in October 2014 succeeding Raghuram Rajan.

Britain leaves the EU PM Cameron to step down as Britain braces up for reverberation; referendum turnout 71.8 per cent — the highest turnout at a British poll since 1992

B

ritain has voted by 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the European Union (EU) after 43 years in a historic referendum, BBC reported on Friday. The referendum turnout was 71.8 per cent — with more than 30 million people voting. This was the highest turnout at a British poll since 1992. Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he will step down by October after Britain voted to leave the European Union.

China still opposing India’s entry into NSG SEOUL: China on June 24 continued to oppose India’s entry to the Nuclear Suppliers Group, saying the global non-proliferation order would collapse if New Delhi was allowed exception. “If exceptions are allowed here or there on the question of NPT, the international non-proliferation order then will be collapsed altogether,” Wang Qun, Director General of the Department of Arms Control of China’s Foreign Ministry, said in a statement from Seoul. “In the absence of NPT as a political and legal basis, it will be inconceivable for the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or the Iran nuclear deal) to be reached,” he added. His comments come as the 48member NSG is holding the second day where the question of India’s membership is being taken up.

"The British people have decided to follow another path. So they need a new prime minister," Cameron said in a televised statement outside Downing Street after the final Brexit result was announced. I love this country and I feel honored to have served it," he said. The “leave” lead campaigner and former London Mayor Boris Johnson was among the a list of people who are likely to make a statement. As a result, the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the

results. Jeremy Cook, chief economist and head of currency strategy at WorldFirst, said: “Sterling has collapsed... It can go a lot further as well.” By 4.00 a.m. (8.30 a.m. India Time), a series of key results signposted a likely leave victory. After a lower-than-expected margin of victory for the remain campaign in Newcastle, where it won the backing of 54 per cent of voters, there was a jolt after midnight when leave captured Sunderland with 61.3 per cent of the vote in a city which has traditionally

LONDON: International reactions poured in on Friday for the dramatic decision by British voters to leave the European Union (EU) in Thursday’s historic referendum. “We respect the result. Now is the time for us to behave seriously and responsibly. (Prime Minister) David Cameron has his responsibilities for his country, we have our responsibilities for the future of the EU. You can see what is happening to sterling on the markets. I don’t want the same thing to happen to the euro,” European Parliament President Martin Schulz said early Friday morning after the results were announced. Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders hailed the decision and said that it was the time for a referendum in the Netherlands. “Hurrah for the British! Now it is our turn. The rupee was also ruling below the $68 mark. Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das sought to calm the markets. “Government is prepared for all eventualities. The stock market is down on initial spontaneous reaction,” he said. The sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which had closed on Thursday at 27,002.22 points, opened the next morning at 26,367.48 points. Some 90 minutes into trading,

when news emerged that Britain has exited the European Union, it drifted sharply and was ruling at 26,034.93, down 967.29 points or 3.58 per cent. At one point, it had lost nearly 1,050 points. Among the 30 stocks that go into the Sensex basket, only Sun Pharma managed to stay afloat. All the other stocks were in the red, led by Tata Motors, which was down as much as 11 per cent. In the pre-open trades, the 30scrip index was down as much as 634.74-points or 2.35 per cent. An indication came from the SGX Nifty, which trades on the Singapore exchange and ahead of the opening bell in India, was down over 2.75 per cent. At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), where the 51-scrip Nifty had closed at 8,270.45 points,

the opening bell was at 8,029.10 points. Thereafter, the index was ruling below the 8,000points mark at 7,962.10 points, down 308.35 points or 3.73 percent. The rupee dived over 1.4 per cent to 68.21 per dollar, while the British pound — that had rallied to nearly $1.5 in early trades — fell sharply to its lowest level since 1985 at $1.35.

France’s far-right Front National party, has welcomed the result. She said she also wants a similar referendum in France. “From #Brexit to #Frexit: It’s now time to import democracy to our country. The French must have the right to choose!” she later tweeted. Manfred Weber, leader of the largest group in the European Parliament, the EPP, said: “Exit negotiations should be concluded within 2 years at max. There cannot be any special treatment. Leave means leave.” German Foreign Minister FrankWalter Steinmeier deemed it as a sad day for Britain and for the EU. The head of Germany’s Foreign Trade Association, Anton Boerner, said: “That is a catastrophic result for Britain and also for Europe and especially the German economy. It is disturbing that the oldest democracy in the world turns its back on us.”

Valvani, 44, who worked as a portfolio manager with hedgefund firm Visium Asset Management LP, was accused of trading on confidential information about generic-drug approvals, the Wall Street Journal reported. He was found dead on June 21 by his wife in the bedroom of their Brooklyn home with a slash wound on his neck. “We hope for the sake of his family and his memory that it will not be forgotten that the charges against him were only unproven accusations

Valvani was accused of having fraudulently made $25 million by getting advanced information about the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals of generic drug applications. He passed on the information to another portfolio manager who made his own illegal trades. Valvani was charged with securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy and was freed on $5 million bond secured by his home. “Visium Asset Management put Valvani on extended leave after learning he was being investigated,” the officials were quoted as saying. Valvani worked at Visium since its 2005 inception. He started out as a sell-side associate at Salomon Smith Barney and joined as an analyst at Balyasny Asset Management in 2003.

xternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on June 19 that the Indian government was making efforts to trace Judith D’Souza, who has been abducted in Afghanistan, and also pursuing the case of 39 Indians who have been missing from Iraq for the past two years following their abduction by Islamic State militants. “In the last two years, I have not abandoned even a single Indian national, whether he is alone or in group or in captive,” Sushma Swaraj said in her annual press conference here. “It is my duty to save every Indian whether he is stranded or captive be it Prem Kumar (a Jesuit priest who was released from Afghanistan last year), Judith or 39 Indians who are in captive. My duty is to bring them all to India,” she added. Judith, 40, working with NGO Aga Khan Development Network was kidnapped earlier this month while she was returning home after a dinner at a friend’s place in the Qala-e-Fatullah area of Kabul. Hailing from Kolkata, she had had been working with the NGO in Kabul as a senior technical adviser

since July 2015. Answering a query on 39 Indians missing from Iraq for the past two years, Sushma Swaraj said she had no confirmation that they had been killed. “In fact we have been informed that they are alive, apart from the statement by Harjeet Masih (who

One of the relatives stated that he spoke to his brother on June 21 (2014). According to Harjeet Masih all were killed on June 15 then how can one speak on June 21?” she asked. Sushma Swaraj further said: “I dont give false hopes. If I had the confirmation that they were killed, then I would have definitely apologized to the families and would have told them that they were killed.

Jaya seeks DMK’s clarification on island She said a Tamil Eelam Supporters Organization resolution moved in 2013 said the DMK government had opposed the transfer of Katchatheevu island IANS, CHENNAI

T

amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on June 20 asked DMK leader M.K. Stalin to clarify his party’s stand with regard to ceding of Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka. Her response came after Stalin, Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, said the central government did not consult the Tamil Nadu government in 1974 while transferring Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. “By passing a resolution in the assembly, the then DMK government headed by (Stalin’s father) M. Karunanidhi closed the discussion on the transfer,” Jayalalithaa said. She said that while speaking on the resolution moved at that time, Karunanidhi told the assembly that there was no hint or information to the Tamil Nadu government from the central government about the transfer of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. Jayalalithaa said a Tamil Eelam Supporters Organization resolution moved in 2013 said the DMK

Karnataka CM reshuffles portfolios BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 21 shuffled portfolios of his ministers, allotting some of them to the 13 new ministers inducted two days back. Siddaramaiah According to an official notification, Governor Vajubhai Vala, on the chief minister’s recommendation, allocated the revenue portfolio to Kagodu Thimmappa. The 84-year-old, seniormost Congress lawmaker from Shivamogga was the assembly speaker since the party returned to power in May 2013. The key portfolio was held by Mysuru region’s lawmaker Srinivasa Prasad, who was among the 14 ministers dropped on June 19. Of the 13 new faces, nine were sworn-in with cabinet rank and four as ministers of state. In the 33-member ministry, including the chief minister, 27 hold cabinet ranks, while six are ministers of state.

government had opposed the transfer of Katchatheevu at the very first instance. After the agreement was signed (between India and Sri Lanka) it was on the DMK government’s insistence that conditions like the island’s use by Tamil Nadu fishermen to fish and dry their nets were added, Jayalalithaa quoted the TESO resolution. Jayalalithaa asked Stalin to clarify his party’s stand in public.

Katchatheevu is a 285-acre island off Rameswaram in the narrow Palk Strait that divides Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It was once part of Ramanathapuram district. After bilateral agreements in 1974 and 1976, Katchatheevu was ceded to Sri Lanka. The sea near the island is said to be rich in marine life, leading to frequent clashes between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen.

‘Humiliated’ Anju Bobby George quits Kerala Sports THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Olympian Anju Bobby George, who has come under attack from Kerala Sports Minister E.P. Jayarajan and his party colleague, on June 22 decided to step down as president of the Kerala Sports Council, and the minister immediately welcomed the move. “Good that she has resigned,” Jayarajan told reporters and added that no one asked her to step down. When it was pointed out that along with her the entire council has also resigned, he said: “Good, very happy to hear that also.” Senior Congress legislator and rormer Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who had appointed George, said this is the end result of a conspiracy by the state government. “This is a shame for sports loving Kerala as the council consisted of top flight international sports personalities. The state government should say why they are doing this,” Radhakrishnan said. State Congress President V.M. Sudheeran said George is a victim of the intolerance of the new government. “We appointed her looking only into her talent and it was not a political appointment as we wanted to take sports to a new level under accomplished sporting personalities,” he said. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said George never approached anyone seeking her post and this clearly shows the intol-

erant attitude of the Left government. But Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan attempted to play down the issue. “If one council goes, another one will come in its place,” he said. The conflict began earlier this month after George got a dressing down from the minister when she went to meet him after he assumed office. The minister told her about corruption during her tenure. “I was appointed by the former Kerala state government around six months ago and things started to go wrong when we decided to appoint an ethics commission which was given the mandate to probe corruption, nepotism, harassment over the entire gambit of the council for the past decade,” George said after a meeting of the council here.

Focus back on Nizam fund after judgement IANS, HYDERABAD

W

ith India and Pakistan both claiming victory following a British court’s judgement in the Hyderabad Funds Case, the focus is back again on a nearly seven decades old dispute over around Rs 350 crore of Hyderabad’s last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. As British Judge J. Henderson on June 21 ruled in favor of full trial in the case, only a long-drawn litigation is likely to decide the case involving the two neighboring countries and descendants of the Nizam. The case relates to 10,07,940 pounds and 9 shillings that Hyderabad’s Finance Minister Moin Nawaz Jung had transferred to Pakistan’s envoy in England, Habib Ibrahim Rahmatoola’s, account in the National Westminster Bank after India’s Partition and amid tension over the Nizam’s refusal to accede to India. The money adjusted to interest and inflation is now estimated to be Rs 350 crore. Both India and Pakistan interpreted June 22s

judgement differently. Islamabad claimed that the British High Court rejected the Indian attempt to strike out Pakistan’s claim to the Hyderabad Fund. “India failed to persuade the court that Pakistan’s position was untenable and that it could show no legal entitlement to the 35 million GBP sitting in a bank account in the name of the High Commissioner of Pakistan, since 20th September 1948... The judge accepted

that there was good evidence in support of Pakistan’s claim to the monies, which needed to be fully considered at a trial,” said the statement from Pakistan Foreign Office. “The 75-page judgement of Henderson J. is a clear vindication of Pakistan’s principled stance, and the effective legal strategy being pursued by the new legal team,” it added. India claimed that the court

ruled against Pakistan’s appeal for a summary disposal of the claim in Islamabad’s favor. “An English court has dismissed Pakistan’s application invoking limitation against India’s claim to the monies. The judgement states that Pakistan’s application for summary disposal of the claim in her favor must fail. The costs for the failure of this application of Pakistan will be awarded to India,” the Ministry of External Affairs said. “Pending trial or settlement of the matter, it is premature to reach any conclusion regarding ownership of the monies, especially as the present judgment readily acknowledges that there is much force in many of India’s arguments to strike out Pakistan’s claim of ownership.” Last year, the same court had ruled against ‘sovereign immunity’ sought by Pakistan in the case and asked it to pay 1,50,000 pounds as legal fees to India. Following transfer of money, India had raised an objection that the Nizam was not an independent ruler and prevailed upon the bank to freeze the account.

Anurag Kashyap calls Nihalani incapable Wants power to go straight to courts or FCAT for certification if directors make an adult film IANS, NEW DELHI

F

ilmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who feels it’s a waste of time and energy to wrangle with the Indian censor board for certification of adult films, says it’s important that in a scenario when the censor body is chaired by a “senile” and “intellectually incapable” person such as Pahlaj Nihalani, movie makers must be empowered to approach the court directly. “Give us the power that if we are making an adult film, and we are seeking an adult certificate, we can go straight to the court or straight to the Tribunal (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal — FCAT). Why should we go through the humiliation of going through him (Pahlaj Nihalani) and waste time,” Kashyap, 43, told IANS in a noholds-barred interview here. Kashyap’s co-production Udta Punjab — a movie on the drug menace in Punjab — could release in India only after the Bombay High Court intervened and overruled the Central Board of Film Certification’s directive to make 89 cuts. Now another of the filmmaker’s co-productions, Haraamkhor, is left in the lurch for a certificate as

its theme of a teacher-student romance has been deemed unfit for the Indian market. There are more films — Sunny Deol’s abuse-laden Mohalla Assi and Manoj Bajpayeestarrer Saat Uchakkey which is also laced with expletives.

According to Kashyap, one of the most outspoken filmmakers of his times, the recent hassles on certification are a result of one man’s ego. “He’s a very strange man who hates that somebody took his power away. What the court said to the censor board was that ‘You can’t cut a film and if you have a problem, refuse the censor certificate’. So in four days, he refused certificate to some films randomly... including Haraamkhor and Saat Uchakkey. “His ego is so big that he can’t take the fact that someone took his powers away,” stressed the filmmaker, who is acclaimed for handling dark themes deftly, and had earlier hit out at Nihalani by calling him an “oligarch”. After the Examining Committee suggested 89 cuts to Udta Punjab, it went to the Revising Committee which scaled down the cuts to 13. Kashyap says filmmakers are now increasingly skipping going through the latter and reaching out straight to the FCAT. “There’s no difference left. The same people sit there and the same mindset follows. So, it’s a waste of time and energy. Pahlaj-ji dictates terms,” he said, adding that he finds Nihalani “intellectually incapable of the position” he holds.

‘Udta Punjab’: Soars high with performances D esigned as a crime thriller and symbolically titled Udta Punjab, the film delves into the growing drug menace in the state of Punjab. The narrative intertwines the lives of a popular youth icon, rockstar-cum-rap-singer Tommy Singh, migrant laborer Kumari Pinky, awho unwittingly gets caught in the clutches of the drug mafia, doctor-cum-activist Preet Sahni, Inspector Sartaj Singh and his younger brother Bali. The plot is pretentious, dramatised and far-fetched. The narration begins with drugs being flung across the border, in the dark of the night, into a field in Punjab. The packet accidentally lands in Kumari Pinky’s hand, who tries to palm off the consignment to Bali’s contact. Though ill-equipped with the ways of drug dealing, she negotiates in the hope of making a quick buck. Inexplicably, realisation dawns

on Pinky, when she is en route to meet the drug dealer. She destroys the consignment before getting caught by the mafia and has to face the brunt of its wrath for her deed. Meanwhile, the police in their zest to show ‘cop power’ arrest Tommy Singh for using drugs and corrupting the youth with his drug-infused rap music. Also, Sartaj Singh realises that his brother has become an addict, when he lands at Preet Sahni’s clinic after getting over-dosed. The doctor motivates Sartaj to fight the drug menace, “system mein rehekar”. The characters are well-defined, but their graphs are poorly etched,

especially Tommy Singh. His journey though exposed realistically, is unconvincing. The drama that keeps you hooked only highlights the premise of the story. It sends out a strong message that every individual needs to fight the corrupt system at their individual level. But the dramatic moment hits the peak when Tommy, while explaining to

Pinky, screeches, “Maal khatam, party over, go home.” What follows is an equally impressive reply from Pinky. The dialogues, replete with cuss words, are as vibrant as the performances. Shahid Kapoor, with his tattooed physique and funky hair style, portrays Tommy Singh to the T. He lives the character of an

artiste constantly under the influence of drugs and he demonstrates it with his meteoric moods, which he displays with alarming, bonechilling precision. Similarly, with a deglamourised and feral look, Alia Bhatt captures your heart as Pinky. She is consistent and brilliant in her performance. With a restrained performance, Punjabi cinema’s heartthrob Diljit Dosanjh is impressive and makes an impact. He is intense as a concerned brother and charming as Preet’s love interest. Prabhjyot Singh essays the role of Bali, a victim of circumstances to perfection. You inadvertently feel sorry for him, even when he turns into a criminal. Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Preet is competent, but offers nothing exceptional. So is Satish Kaushik, who plays Taayaji, Tommy’s uncle and show promoter. The songs are situational. They add flavour to the film, but do not propel the narrative.

NCW slams Salman for rape remark

S

uperstar Salman Khan found himself in hot water once again after comparing himself to a “raped woman” while talking about the training schedule for Sultan. After his remarks sparked controversy, Salman’s father and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan came forward to apologize for his son’s statement. Salman was responding to a query on his experience of shooting for his forthcoming film during a media interaction here on June 18. Salim Khan contended that Salman meant no wrong when he said he felt like a “raped woman”, but apologized on his behalf. Salim Khan tweeted: “Undoubtedly, what Salman said is wrong, the simile, example and the context. The intention was not wrong. Nevertheless, I apologize on behalf of his family, his fans and his friends. Forgiveness is to pardon the unpardonable or it is no virtue at all.” When Salman was asked how difficult it was to shoot wrestling scenes for the movie, he said: “While shooting during those six hours, there was so much of lifting and thrusting that it was unbelievable. If I was lifting a 120 kg person and dropping him down, I had

to do it 10 times. “(I did it) 10 times from five different angles. So, six-and-half or seven hours. Either, I was picking him and throwing (him) or else, he was picking me up and throwing me... That couldn’t stop.” The comment sent social media users into a tizzy, with many slamming the actor for his “callous remark” after a website, SpotboyE, carried the detailed quotes of

Salman as an “interview”. Criticizing Salman, who is one of the top paid celebrities in India, the National Commission for Women (NCW) asked him to furnish an apology within seven days. NCW Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam said Salman may be issued a summon if he failed to comply.

NEW DELHI: Criticizing Bollywood superstar Salman Khan for his remark that he felt like a “raped woman” after shooting a wrestling scene in his upcoming film “Sultan”, the National Commission for Women on June 21 asked him to apologize within seven days. “Just because he is Salman Khan does not mean he will make such a statement. This is sad,” National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam told the media. She said Salman may be issued a summons if he failed to comply. “It is like the most difficult thing... when I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out... it feels like the most difficult... I couldn’t take steps,” Khan is heard saying in an audio clipping during interaction with a goup of journalists. Asha Devi, mother of the infamous 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, said she was “hurt” by Salman’s remarks. “He says he felt like a raped woman. What does he know of rape?” She told a news channel, trying to fight back tears.

Real incident inspired ‘Metro’

orthcoming Tamil crimethriller Metro, which explores the psyche of modern-day criminals, is inspired by a real incident which was witnessed by its director Ananda Krishnan not long ago. “Few years ago, I had witnessed a chain snatching. Thankfully, it was a failed attempt but the lady fell down and bruised herself in the process. The mental trauma she underwent during that split second and the ensuing hours inspired me to make Metro,” Anand told IANS. Mostly starring newcomers Shirish Saravanan, Sathya, Nishanth and Rajkumar, the film also features National award-winning actor Bobby Simhaa in a pivotal role. “I wanted to understand what really motivates people to commit these crimes. From my understanding, even small things like the

inability of parents to buy their college-going son a bike of his choice can push him to extreme limits. I’ve also explored this angle in the film,” he said. Going by the promos, the film has caught the attention of audi-

Actor Charandeep is the baddie in demand CHENNAI: Actor Charandeep, who is known for his antagonist’s roles in films such as Jilla and Loafer, is one of the busiest actors with over half a dozen southern projects in his kitty. “It’s been a very busy yet successful year for me so far. I’m currently shooting for Vishal’s Kathi Sandai and Sunil’s Eedu Gold Eh while projects that await releases are Veera, Sharaba, Naanu Mattu Varalakshmi, Antham and Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva,” Charandeep, who turned 29 on Monday, told IANS. Among these projects, Charandeep is most excited about Veeru Potla-directed Eedu Gold Eh and Sharaba. “In ‘Eedu Gold Eh, I play a villain with an emotional side and I’m closely attached to my father. I liked how director Potla didn’t make it just another villain. It’s a very interesting character and I’m stoked about it,” he said, adding that he plays a character along the lines of Sonu Sood from Arundhati in Sharaba. “Sharaba is a socio-fantasy film. My role required me to undergo a complete makeover. On the sets, the make-up part only took me nearly three hours each day. It’s easily one of the most challenging roles of my career. There’s still about five days of shooting left,” he said. For a change, he will be seen in a

The teaser also introduces viewers to the film’s main

and its theme. However, after approaching the revising committee, it was passed with ‘A’ certificate without any cuts. “The violence in the film has been justified. By making audiences understand the psyche of criminals and showing them how crimes happen, we’re only creating awareness. In many ways, my film will help audiences to be vigilant the next time they step out of their house,” Anand added. Shot in 28 days under a tight budget, Metro releases in cinemas on June 24. His film may have been denied certification originally, but Anand feels audiences are ready for raw and gritty films. “As humans, we are all raw on the inside. I’m not showing something that audiences won’t accept. Sadly, we haven’t had many films that are raw and gritty. Once they get used to realistic films, this trend will gain popularity,” he said.

Venkatesh’s cameo in ‘Premam’ special CHENNAI: Actor Venkatesh’s cameo in upcoming Telugu romantic-drama Premam, an eponymous remake of Malayalam Venkatesh blockbuster, was specially added in the remake. “Venkatesh plays an interesting cameo in ‘Premam’. I’m not sure how audiences will accept me in a positive role,” said Charandeep, who is paired with actress Rashmi Gautam in the film. In Vishal’s Tamil actioner “Kathi Sandai”, he’s the brother of actor Tarun Arora, who plays the main baddie. He plays a racer in Kannada thriller “Naanu Mattu Varalakshmi”, which is tipped to be India’s first motocross film.

irector Ramaraju describes the process of making Telugu romantic-drama Oka Manasu, which introduces megastar Chiranjeevi’s niece Niharika Konidela, as a spiritual journey which he thoroughly enjoyed. “The way this film has shaped is fascinating. I never tried hard to make the film, but things just fell in place and it happened. I say the process is spiritual because I bonded with the story on an emotional level and deep down I know the film has turned out exactly the way I want it,” Ramaraju told IANS. Calling it a “magical” experi-

ence, he said everything that he visualised, somehow made it to the film. “More than what I had written, things that I had visualized

became an integral part of the film. It’s a story from the heart, unadulterated, and all I had to do was observe what was happening within me and recreate it as part of the filmmaking process,” he said. Having made a directorial debut with 2013 Telugu romantic-drama Mallela Theeram Lo Sirimalle Puvvu, Ramaraju feels his latest film will be widely accepted. “My first film didn’t get its due, because it released in very less number of screens. I learnt that cinema is not art and everything is linked to commerce. I know Oka Manasu will appeal to everybody, because I felt nostalgic when I wrote it,” he said.

BY A STAFF WRITER ODESTO, CA -- In a firstof-its-kind appointment, the Modesto Police Department, Calif., swore in its first Sikh American officer on June 14, allowing him to wear his turban and have beard on work despite a grooming policy that requires officers to be clean-shaven in the department. Ceres, Modesto-based Varinder Khun Khun was born in India, and graduated from the Napa Police Academy on June 11. The 28-year-old is one of the 33 officers hired by the department so far. “I’ve never seen police officers wearing a turban before; I didn’t know if I would get a chance (to be a police officer) … I am thankful for MPD giving me the opportunity,” said the Sikh before the swearing-in ceremony. The Modesto Police Department’s grooming policy requires officers be clean shaven, allowing only for a moustache that extends to the edge of the lip. Khun Khun approached Police Chief Galen Carroll a year ago about applying for the job and the requirement that he have a beard and wear a turban. In 2012, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that added to California’s Fair Employment Act protection against discrimination for religious dress and grooming practices. In April, three US Army enlistees won permission to wear beards and turbans after filing federal lawsuits that seek to force the Pentagon to accommodate those who wear beards for religious purposes.

Elderly couple faces bank fraud charges

Urobiologics simplifies gender determination BY A STAFF WRITER IVONIA, MI – Urobiologics, the first company to develop and commercially introduce gender determination after pregnancy by testing urine, has indeed discovered a new phenomenon in women: Although the gender of the baby is determined by sperms, women have two kinds of menstrual cycles. These cycles are gender specific and alternate. One cycle is good for conceiving a boy, the next one for a girl. Just like women stop menstruating after conception, they stop alternating as well, as long as that baby is there. This is a parallel medical discovery. The uterus appears to sort and select X & Y chromosome bearing sperms, because 92% of couples who conceived in appropriate cycle, got the babies they planned for. This aspect is going to be a medical miracle. Based on these findings, Urobiologics

L

has developed the ‘PreGender Preconception Test’ to guide couples in which cycle to try and when to avoid. This amazing technology is covered by two US patents # 9,057,720 & 8,759,109 “We are so confident of our success that

these days we ask our customers to pick a name of the planned baby in advance. She can begin gender planning process by collecting two consequent mid-cycle urine samples and shipping to us in Livonia MI US”, says a company scientist. According to him, after testing them, the company continues emailing personalized conception plan in every desired cycle till she conceives, without any additional cost. If she gets pregnant, she immediately collects urine samples for the FirstGender Post-conception test and there’s 92% chance the name of the baby will be included in that report. Of course, there is 8% chance of going opposite, but that’s not the error of the test. If there’s no conception, she must skip the next cycle. Sh i p p i n g u r i n e s a m p l e s a c ro s s international borders is legal and the samples stay good during transport. For details: www. urobiologics.com or call 1 + 313 574 7500 in USA

Mata Amritanandamayi “Amma”

In December 2014, Amma joined Pope Francis and 10 other global spiritual leaders from a range of faiths to sign the Declaration of Religious Leaders Against Modern Slavery. People come to Amma from all walks of life with a diverse belief system. Some have been walking the spiritual path for decades; others have never picked up a spiritual book in their lives. Some come because they are suffering mentally, physically, or materially, and they hope Amma can help them. Some are simply curious. Perhaps they have seen Amma in newspapers or on TV, and they want to see for themselves what Amma is all about. BY A STAFF WRITER RIZONA -- Namboori Sridatta, 25, from Telangana and P Naresh, 24, from Andhra Pradesh, India were drowned while picnicking in two separate incidents in the US on June 19. Sridatta, who was working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Arizona, slipped and fell into water while on a picnic with friends at a waterfall and his body was recovered by rescue workers. His body was sent to India after his family sought help of the Indian government. Sridatta had gone to the US five years ago and after his education at Arizona University, got a job at TCS. “He was to come home next month but yesterday we got this shocking news,” Sridatta’s father NVM Swamy told journalists. P Naresh, a student in California, was on a picnic with his friends on a boat when he slipped and fell into the water. The body was found by the local police after a search operation. Naresh, son of a poor farmer, was a second year MS student. Naresh’s family had also urged the Indian government to make necessary arrangements to bring back the body.

In between, she will be in San Ramon, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Santa Fe, NM, Dallas, TX, Chicago, IL, New York, NY, Boston, MA, and Washington, DC. The Chicago program will be on June 27, 28, and 29. investigating the relinquished heritage spanning 15th and 21st centuries across many locations in Pakistan. Some of the Gurdwaras and libraries are renovated by the government of Pakistan in the recent times but it is going on a slow and low priority basis. His interesting talk was followed by fascinating discussions with many touching questions and answers especially issues related to travelling to these remote areas.

AID takes up cudgels for gas-hit in Bhopal BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX – Thirty-two years ago, on the night of December 2, 1984, the world’s worst industrial disaster at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released at least 30 tons of a highly toxic gas called methyl isocyanate, as well as a number of other poisonous gases and killed more than 15,000 people over the years. There are thousands of heartbreaking stories of Bhopal gas disaster survivors. At last, the Association For India’s Development (AID) decided to help and support the struggle of Bhopalis and make their voice and suffering being heard in the US White House to find relief to their several decade’s long fight. The Bhopal campaign is one of the many struggles that AID is supporting. Up to now, survivors have been demanding that the US Corporations responsible (Union Carbide Corp. and its current owner Dow Chemical Co.) along with the Indian Government, readdress the issue by compensating the affected, cleaning up the premises, and providing reasonable medical care for the survivors. However, it has become clear that the US government too has played a role in hindering justice for the Bhopalis. The

US Department of Justice has been silently shielding the corporations responsible by blocking the court notices to Dow Chemical in relation to the pending criminal case against it. The next hearing for this case is on July 13t. AID is proud to stand with the Bhopalis in this historic effort to petition

the White House to stop shielding Dow Chemical. When they reach the magic number of 100,000 signatures, the White House has to respond to the petition and right action for the case. AID’s volunteers are requesting all the sensible people to join them in their effort to get justice.

Sanjay Valvani

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY – Sanjay Valvani, hedge fund manager at Visium Asset Management, was found dead on June 20 in an apparent suicide just days after turning himself in on alleged insider trading. “We mourn the tragic loss of Sanjay, a devoted father, husband and friend,” Visium founder Jacob Gottlieb said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.” New York police officials said Valvani was found by his wife and left a suicide note. The 44-year-old turned himself in to authorities on June 15 and was charged with five counts in a scheme that lasted from 2005 through 2011, netting him roughly $25 million. He had pleaded not guilty to all five counts. Visium, which had on June 17 announced it would shut down its operations, had placed Valvani on leave earlier in the year after it announced the company was under investigation. The bust is among the largest insider trading cases since a court ruling in 2014 made it more challenging for prosecutors to pursue the culprits. It’s uncertain how Valvani’s death will affect the proceedings of the case. Preet Bharara, Indian American US attorney in Manhattan, N.Y., accused Visium Asset Management LP’s Valvani of fraudulently making $25 million courtesy of advance information about Food and Drug Administration approvals of generic drug applications. According to prosecutors, consultant Gordon Johnston, a former deputy director of the FDA office of generic drugs, provided Valvani the information after receiving a tip from a friend and former FDA colleague still working there. Valvani then turned over some of the tips to then-Visium portfolio manager Christopher Plaford who made his own illegal trades. Visium is said to have paid Johnston hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, but Valvani asked its chief financial officer in a January 6, 2010 email to award a raise. Prosecutors said Johnston sent tips about Momenta Pharmaceuticals’ effort to win FDA approval for the first generic equivalent to Sanofi’s Lovenox, for treating deep vein thrombosis. After Momenta won approval in July 2010, causing its stock to rise 82 per cent in one day, Valvani made $25 million from selling his Momenta stock, and closing bets that Sanofi stock would fall because of the new competition, say prosecutors.

Email scams cost U.S. businesses billions each year BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY According to the FBI, more than 22,000 companies around the world have reported their email accounts compromised since January 2013. As part of an effort to raise public awareness of the increasing threat cyber criminals pose to America’s business community, the FBI issued a public service announcement Tuesday highlighting email scams that have cost businesses worldwide more than $3 billion over the last two and a half years. The scammers target businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments by compromising their business email accounts through social engineering or by hacking into their computers, the FBI says. Correction Boss Busted in Alleged Pension Scam In some cases, cyber criminals will hack into the emails of company executives and use those email accounts to request employees’ personal information from the

company’s human resources department. In other cases, cyber thieves pose as an attorney or vendor used by the company to request a transfer of funds. They send a spoof email using an email address that appears similar to the legitimate accounts. Top News Photos of the Week[NATL] Top News Photos of the Week According to the FBI, more than 22,000 companies around the world have reported their email accounts compromised since January 2013, resulting in unauthorized transfers of billions of dollars, mostly going to banks in China and Hong Kong. At Tuesday’s announcement, the FBI also discussed recent increases in the use of

ransomware, in which cyber thieves install malware that encrypts all files on a computer network until a ransom is paid by the victim company, and the increased vulnerability of U.S. critical infrastructure, which was hacked 295 times in 2015, up from 39 times two years earlier. 2 Charged in 2015 Overdose Death of NY Dermatologist The head of the FBI’s Cyber Task Force in New York, Aristedes Mahairas, identified China, Russia, North Korea and Iran as the leading sponsors of the state-sponsored cyber crime. Mahairas said that in addition to investigating cyber crimes, the FBI Cyber Task Force is educating and partnering with the private sector to address the burgeoning cyber crime problem. Tobacco store owner pleads guilty to fraud

Rehan A. Merchant

BY A STAFF WRITER ANNERSVILLE, PA -Monroe County man is facing up to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Rehan A. Merchant, 39, of Tannersville, admitted to conspiring with others to use counterfeit and stolen debit and credit cards to make fraudulent purchases at the Cigar and Tobacco Outlet. Merchant and the co-conspirators forged the names of cardholders on the receipts, according to a news release from the US Attorney in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The purchases were made between from September 2014 to September 2015. Merchant has been in federal custody since his indictment in November last. Other co-conspirators have not been indicted to date. In addition to a maximum of 30 years in federal prison for the wire fraud charge, Merchant faces a two-year prison term for the identity theft charge, which would run consecutive to any other prison term. He would also be subject to federal fines.
