Trump faces tax probe Trump was involved in ‘dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, according to a report in the New York Times IANS, NEW YORK
T
he New York State Tax Department has confirmed it is investigating claims by the New York Times that US President Donald Trump helped his parents dodge millions of dollars in taxes. The newspaper has alleged that Trump was involved in “dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud”, the BBC reported on Wednesday. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders has called the story a “misleading attack”. She said the transactions were signed off by the IRS “many decades ago”. Trump, himself has not commented, but his lawyer Charles Harder said in a statement: “There was no fraud or tax evasion by anyone. The facts upon which The New York Times bases its false allegations

are extremely inaccurate.” The newspaper said its sources include public documents such as financial disclosure reports, as well as confidential records like bank statements. It said “more than 200 tax returns
from Fred Trump (the president’s father), his companies and various Trump partnerships and trusts” were among them. Unlike past US presidents, Trump has so far refused to release his personal tax returns, so the NYT has
not seen the former business tycoon’s tax details. Trump has repeatedly styled himself as a self-made billionaire who got little help from his wealthy father’s property empire. But in a special investigation based on more than 100,000 pages of documents, the New York Times alleged that the president actually received the equivalent of $413 million. “By age three, Trump was earning $200,000 a year in today’s dollars from his father’s empire,” it states. “He was a millionaire by age eight,” the report said. It also claimed Trump was getting the equivalent of $1 million a year from his father shortly after he graduated from college. That figure had risen to more than $5 million by the time he was in his forties and fifties, the report said.
Trump mocks Ford’s testimony IANS, WASHINGTON

S President Donald Trump has ridiculed the testimony of Christine Ford, the woman who made sexual assault charges against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. At a rally in Mississippi on Tuesday, Trump cast doubts on the version of events presented by Ford under oath during testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, in which she
described in detail the alleged sexual assault committed by Kavanaugh, CNN reported. “How did you get home? ‘I don’t remember’. How’d you get there? ‘I don’t remember’. Where is the place? ‘I don’t remember’. How many years ago was it?’ I don’t know’,” Trump said, apparently mocking Ford’s responses. “’What neighborhood was it in? ‘I don’t know’, Where’s the house? ‘I don’t know’. Upstairs, downstairs, where I was. I don’t know.
But I had one beer. That’s the only thing I remember,” he added. The President said Ford’s testimony had “shattered” Kavanaugh and his family and added that those who had supported the allegations were “evil”. However, earlier Trump called Ford a “credible” and “compelling” witness. In her testimony, Ford had said that she was “100 per cent sure” that Kavanaugh had attempted to rape her in 1982 when they were teenagers.
BRIEFS Letters to Trump: Suspect in custody WASHINGTON: A suspect believed to be connected to mysterious letters sent to US President Donald Trump and top Pentagon officials has been taken into custody by federal law enforcement in the state of Utah, a media report said. FBI tactical and hazardous material response personnel searched the subject’s residence outside Salt Lake City. Melodie Rydalch, a spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office in Utah, identified the suspect in custody as William Clyde Allen, III and said federal prosecutors had authorized the arrest. “We anticipate filing a complaint Friday in federal court in Salt Lake City,” Rydalch told CNN late Wednesday.
New deal may replace NAFTA WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has said he plans to sign a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada by the end of November to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). “It’s my great honor to announce that we have successfully completed negotiations on a brand new deal to terminate and replace NAFTA... with an incredible new US-Mexico-Canada agreement called USMCA,” Trump said on Monday at an event at the White House to celebrate the new trade deal, Xinhua reported. “I plan to sign the agreement by the end of November. I then will submit it for approval to Congress, where, in theory, there should be no trouble,” he said. —IANS
US tariffs starting to have effect on global economy: Lagarde IANS, WASHINGTON

nternational Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde, has said the current situation of protectionist policies unleashed by the US has begun to have an effect on the global economy, slowing its growth, according to IMF forecasts. “A key issue is that rhetoric is morphing into a new reality of actual trade barriers. This is hurting not only trade itself, but also investment and manufacturing as uncertainty continues to rise,” Lagarde said on Monday in a speech at IMF headquarters in Washington, Efe news reported. In addition, she warned that if current trade disputes escalate “further, they could deliver a shock to a broader range of emerging and developing economies.”
International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde
The IMF in July projected world economic growth of 3.9 per cent for 2018 and 2019, although Lagarde said that the next forecast — to be
announced in Bali, Indonesia, during the October 8-14 annual IMG and World Bank assembly — would be “less bright”.
However, the IMF Managing Director emphasized that global economic growth remains “at its highest level since 2011,” when the nations of the world began recovering from the economic crisis, and she hailed the fact that the unemployment figures are falling “in most countries”. Despite this growth context, Lagarde warned that the world’s main economy, the US, in the future could suffer adverse effects from the tax reform approved last December by President Donald Trump. “For now, the US is growing strongly, supported by a procyclical fiscal expansion and still easy financial conditions - which can become a risk in a maturing business cycle,” she said. The IMF chief said that in other
advanced economies, including those in the Euro Zone and, to a lesser degree, Japan, “there are signs of slowing”. Lagarde also reviewed the challenges facing emerging markets and low-income nations, including Latin America, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Many of these economies are “facing pressures from a stronger US dollar and a tightening of financial market conditions. Some of them are now facing capital outflows,” she said. To try and deal with this unstable situation, Lagarde said that the rules of the global trade system must be strengthened via the prevention of abuses by countries in dominant positions and by improving the implementation of intellectual property rights.

Modi warns India’s enemies Modi’s attack came a day after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj denounced Pakistan for its continued support to terrorism on Indian soil IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a veiled warning to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Indian soldiers will give a “befitting reply” to whosoever attempts to ruin peace and progress in India. While India fiercely believed in peace, it would not compromise with its honor and sovereignty at any cost, he said. Modi’s remarks came in his 48th episode of monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, a day after India celebrated the second anniversary of the 2016 surgical strike by the Army on terrorist hubs in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Recalling the surgical strike as a reply to the “audacity of a proxy war under the garb of terrorism”, Modi, without naming Pakistan, said: “It has now been decided that our soldiers will give a befitting reply to

I ICICI Bank’s Chanda Kochhar
MUMBAI: ICICI Bank’s Chanda Kochhar, who is facing allegations of conflict of interest over a loan to Videocon Group that had in turn lent to a company part-owned by her husband, has quit as the bank’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. The inquiry against her will continue. The bank has appointed its Chief Operating Officer Sandeep Bakhshi as the new CEO and MD with immediate effect, ICICI Bank said in an exchange filing. In reaction, the shares of ICICI Bank rose, settling over 4 percent higher at Rs. 315.95 apiece in Mumbai trading. In contrast, the benchmark BSE Sensex plunged 806 points, or 2.24 percent, to settle at 35,169.16 amid worsening investor sentiment. “The Board of Directors of ICICI Bank Limited accepted the request of Chanda Kochhar to seek early retirement from the Bank at the earliest. The Board accepted this request with immediate effect. “The enquiry instituted by the Board will remain unaffected by this,” the company said in the filing.
the bilateral talks process. New Delhi on September 21 called off talks by Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan, blaming Islamabad for the killing of security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir and accusing it of glorifying terrorism. Modi said: “India has always been resolutely committed to peace. In the two World Wars, over a lakh of our soldiers made the supreme sacrifice; that too in a war where we were not involved in any way. “We have never eyed someone else’s territory maliciously. This in itself was our commitment and dedication towards peace. “Even today, India is one of the largest contributors to various UN Peace Keeping forces in terms of sending personnel. For decades, our brave soldiers wearing blue helmets have played a stellar role in ensuring maintenance of world peace.”
Mayawati deals blow to Congress n yet another blow to the Congress, BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday ruled out any alliance with the party in the coming Assembly polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, a decision that could also impact the opposition’s plan for a grand alliance against the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “The Congress is two steps ahead of the BJP in attempts to finish the BSP politically. Significantly, at the swearing in of Karnataka Chief Minister H.D.Kumaraswamy in May, Mayawati was present along with national leaders including Congress President Rahul Gandhi that lent credence to the theory that a grand alliance was possible against the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections.
BRIEFS Hope S-400 deal will sail through: IAF NEW DELHI: With the punitive US law CAATSA looming large over the Indo-Russian S-400 missile deal, Air Force chief B.S. Dhanoa on Wednesday said that he expected the deal to sail through “as and when the government clears it”. “The negotiations are over and it is with the government now. I don’t think that CAATSA is likely to come in the way. But the decision belongs to the government,” the Air Chief Marshal said a day ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2-day visit to India. Putin will hold a bilateral meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 5 and the over Rs 40,000 crore S-400 Triumf air defence system is likely to be top on the agenda.
Rohingya immigrants sent to Myanmar IMPHAL: Seven Rohingya Muslims were on Thursday formally handed over by Indian authorities to Myanmar officials at Moreh in Manipur, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s refusal to stay their deportation. The seven men were arrested in Assam in 2012 for illegally entering India and have since served their six-year prison terms in Silchar district. They were brought to Moreh from Assam by Assistant Commandant Sudashu Kumar posted with the paramilitary force in Assam. After completion of formalities, the seven persons were handed over to Aung Myo, Deputy Director of Immigration in Myanmar. Following Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s directive, northeastern states sharing international borders with different countries in the region had tightened security to ensure that displaced Rohingya Muslims do not enter India. —IANS

‘Vaishnav Jan’ fuses spirits of Gandhi, Narsinh Mehta As India celebrates the onset of the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, it might do itself well to also acknowledge Narsinh Mehta (1414-1480) MAYANK CHHAYA, NEW YORK
B
orn over four centuries and 300 kilometres apart, a single song fused the spirits of Narsinh Mehta and Mohandas Gandhi. By the time Gandhi was born in 1869, Narsinh had already been a figure of great reverence in Gujarat for over four centuries. Regarded as Gujarat’s “Adi Kavi” or pioneering poet, he not only invented the Gujarati poetic form but raised it to the level of the highest musical and philosophical expression. Although much of what Narsinh wrote as poetry, songs, ballads and verses was popularly known, his one particular creation, “Vaishnav Jan To” (The Truly Righteous One) became widely feted, celebrated and embedded into the popular consciousness of the people of Gujarat. There was no way Gandhi could have been living in Porbandar, some 300 kilometres west of Narsinh’s birthplace of Talaja, and not known about it. The bhajan had pervaded the air of the Saurashtra region for centuries, handed down the generations as a collective treasure that was never guarded but somehow always secure. The idea of who a truly An artistic impression of world’s biggest ‘charkha’ outside Sevagram Ashram complex on Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary in Wardha, Maharashtra.

Regarded as Gujarat’s “Adi Kavi” or pioneering poet, he not only invented the Gujarati poetic form but raised it to the level of the highest musical and philosophical expression Africa that it really became a moral marker for him. Perhaps the earliest recorded reference to the song was sometime in 1907, when Gandhi had already been a resident of the country for close to 14 years. He was a very wellknown figure not just to South Africa’s Indian community but also far beyond to its English rulers at home and in England. Gandhi’s 1907 calendar reads like that of a seasoned political campaigner operating on an
unusually broad canvas as someone who had already become a leader of extraordinary consequence. From pushing for civil rights for Indians to malaria relief for the larger Durban community to being immersed in the activities of the Natal Indian Congress and to opposing the discriminatory Asiatic Registration Act, he led a wide variety of campaigns. It was in that political, legal and cultural hubbub that he began to turn to “Vaishnav Jan To” as his moral compass. The original composition by an inmate of the Sabarmati Ashram is rendered austerely with a singlestring instrument and a pair of Manjeera or small hand cymbals playing along. It has the feel of dawn breaking with the singer voicing Narsinh’s immortal words with a touch of stirring rusticity. It was this version that was heard throughout Gujarat and beyond for the better part of over four decades after 1920, even though its many reworked versions had also started gaining popularity. As India celebrates the onset of the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, it might do itself well to also acknowledge Narsinh Mehta (1414-1480), the profoundly philosophical articulator of the values he stood for.

We have not received a single response from the Governor’s office. “If the government is not scared and they have the numbers, there should not be any reason to avoid a floor test. “Why cannot they have a one day session to prove their strength,” Kavlekar said here. lawmakers seeking his removal was “not maintainable”. The Goa political crisis began after ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. He was airlifted to the national capital’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in September. Two ailing ministers Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza, who is being treated for cancer in New York, and Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, who suffered a brain stroke earlier in 2018 were replaced by BJP MLAs Milind Naik and Nilesh Cabral, respectively in September. Parrikar’s absence has led to allied parties, the Goa Forward and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, demanding a bigger share of portfolios, with some leaders even eyeing the Chief Minister’s post.

special report
TRUMP HAILS ‘TARIFF KING’ INDIA Donald Trump says he has a ‘great’ relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
U United States President Donald Trump. (File photo: IANS)
nited States President Donald Trump said this week that he has a “great” relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has told him that India is going to reduce substantially the tariffs on imports from the US. He said that “tariff king” India on its own has reached out to the US to make a trade deal, without Washington calling New Delhi for negotiations. He was speaking at a White House news conference on the revised North American Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico -- a landmark deal that fulfills one of his election promises.
Answering a question from a reporter, he said, “I have spoken Prime Minister Modi and he is going to reduce them (tariffs) very substantially.” He added, “My relationship with India is great, with Prime Minister Modi is great. And they are going to start doing a lot.” Scoring a domestic political point, he asserted that as in the case of the NAFTA and and other trade issues, none of the previous presidents or trade representatives had spoken to India about the high tariffs. He quoted Modi as telling him, “Nobody every spoke to me” about the high tariffs. “They (India) have called us to
make a deal, we didn’t even call them; they called us to make a deal, which is like shocking to people,” he added. Trump explained that he called India a “tariff king” because “it charges us tremendous tariffs.” He cited the example Harley Davidson motorcycles, which would resonate with bikers who are a section of his electoral base, saying that India charged 100 per cent duties on it. He said, “That is so high that it is like barrier, in other words who is going to buy it if it costs you so much.” “Now they have reduced that substantially, but it is still too high,” he asserted.
India essential component of multipolar world: UN IANS, NEW DELHI
M
ultilateralism has not been under so much fire as it is today and India will be the essential component if the world has to become multipolar, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this week. He called for a global response to climate change and terrorism, which he said were the two biggest challenges the world was facing. A multilateral approach was needed to meet challenges and threats which were becoming more
and more global in nature, Guterres said while delivering a lecture on “Global Challenges, Global Solutions” here. “But the paradox is that never in recent times was multilateralism under so much fire and never, as in recent times, was a rule-based international community being put under fire,” he said. He said the world ceased to be bipolar after the end of the Cold War and turned unipolar, but today’s world “is a kind of a chaotic world”. “The world has to be multipolar
and India has a key role to play... No country is better placed for this than India,” Guterres said. He added that India’s assertiveness on the global platform was a key element. His remarks assume significance in the face of US President Donald Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement and withdrawal of international sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, and imposing new trade tariffs on countries like India and China. Regarding the challenge of climate change, Guterres said India

had already been impacted through droughts and floods. He said if the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement, in which India played a key role, were not met, then the world would be in a catastrophic situation.
Stressing on the necessity for solar and wind energy, Guterres said India, despite its problems, had to play a key role in the fight against climate change and to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

ven in the face of “extraordinary pressure to assimilate with the host populations”, Tibetans living in exile in India have been extremely successful in retaining their ancestral way of life, says Sudeep Basu, whose recent book “In Diasporic Lands”, attempts to chart the story of Tibetan refugees and their transformation since the exodus. “The success is a result of a concerted effort on the part of the government of India and the Dharamsala administration to enable Tibetan refugees to preserve their culture and pursue economic activity against all odds,” Basu, an Assistant Professor at the Centre for
In the book, he also talks at length about the “lived meanings” that Tibetan refugees in Darjeeling attach to their life in exile and to the spaces they live and work in The cover art of ‘In Diasporic Lands.’
Studies in Social Management, Central University of Gujarat, told IANS. He contended that the cre-
living in transit camps or working on road repair were resettled “within a period of five years” and became economically “self-sufficient”.
“Gradually, with greater education extended to Tibetans, many have moved out of these settlements into other occupations, exploring new possibilities among their hosts. In time, sweater-selling business, hotel business and tour operations, proved more lucrative and less time-consuming for the aspirational India-born Tibetans,” he pointed out. His book is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Darjeeling and the author’s findings suggest that an uncertain future has not deterred Tibetans, refugees in Darjeeling since 1959, from achieving material and non-material success. In the book, Basu argues that places and identities are “redefined and transformed” by refugees
negotiating their “belonging in an alien country” over time. Asked how, he shared an example, pointing out that nearly all Tibetan refugees in Darjeeling town under the Foreigners Registration Act have also obtained the Registration Certificate (RC) as an emphatic proof of their Tibetanness. In the book, he talks at length about the “lived meanings” that Tibetan refugees in Darjeeling attach to their life in exile and to the spaces they live and work in. Basu said the continuing traffic between Tibetans, both physical and on the internet, on both sides of the Himalayas and dispersed in the diaspora has produced an increased awareness among Tibetan refugees of the inter-connectedness of places.

A memorable Asia Cup for India India became champions for the seventh time, with a last-ball victory over Bangladesh in the title-clash, amid edge-of-the-seat finishes in four matches at the tournament VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI
India aim to overpower West Indies in 2 Tests
T
he just-concluded Asia Cup will be remembered for edge-of-the-seat finishes in four matches as it culminated in India becoming champions for the seventh time, with a last-ball victory over Bangladesh in the title-clash. Bangladesh made it a memorable final as well as the tournament for themselves. A pity, they played three finals in the biennial tournament and could not win even once. This was their second successive loss to India in the final and had lost the 2012 final to Pakistan. Bangladesh were able to defend 246 against Afghanistan, and 239 against Pakistan in a virtual semifinal. They looked like doing so again against India and this time they had 223. They stumbled at the doorstep of history as they were up against a truly all-round side in the final. In the pool game, they were no match to India. This the second final Bangladesh lost to India this year, both after looking like pulling them off. Six months ago, they could not stop India from getting 32 runs in the last two overs of the Twenty20 Nidahas Tournament in Colombo when Dinesh Karthik hit what he thought his karma of doing good things helped him hit a winning last-ball six.

A look at the Asia Cup scorecard shows how India got out of difficult situations in the final even though none of their batsmen scored a fifty, skipper Rohit Sharma being the closest with 48. What tilted the balance was that seven Indian batsmen had healthy double-figures, helping them in stringing crucial partnerships, particularly the lower middle order. Talking positives is a favortie pastime for the captains. The tournament brought Dhawan back into focus as he hit two hundreds to be named the player of the tournament. But that may not help him retain his Test place in the upcoming
series against West Indies. His miserable showing in South Africa and England will continue to be marked against him, though Rohit may be back at No.6, after missing the England tour, when the selectors sit down to pick the squad on Sunday. The selectors may continue to rest and rotate players but it is unclear how much will that help either the players or the team. Rohit, who is being seen as whiteball cricket captain in the Dhoni mould, said after the tournament that the fourth and sixth slot in the World Cup batting order are still up for grabs. Ambati Tirupathi
RAJKOT: After two consecutive away series defeats, India will be desperate to taste victory when they take on an inexperienced West Indies in the first Test of the twomatch series at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium. The Virat Kohli-led team India suffered a disastrous 1-4 defeat at the hands of England after enduring a 12 series loss against South Africa earlier this year. After this home series, India is scheduled to tour Australia and therefore, Kohli and the team management will try their best to shed their shortcomings before the next big series. As openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan have been axed
from the squad, young Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw was all set to receive his maiden Test cap to open the innings with KL Rahul. Moreover, after a decent show in first-class cricket, Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal has been included in the Indian side. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant too will feature in the playing eleven as skipper Kohli has hinted that he is against making too many changes in the lower-middle order. On the other hand, the Jason Holder-led Caribbean side boasts of some talented cricketers in their squad but lacks the required experience to challenge the No. 1 Test side. —IANS
Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik are in the running and they had decent outings. Karthik in particular played two critical innings, including his 37 in the final. As for Dhoni, he should play in domestic cricket, as Sunil Gavaskar suggested, and that will help him to regain his touch as a free-flowing stroke-maker, though he is still the best man to tend the wickets.
He might even regain his power to be a finisher knocking around. The bowling is pretty good, though there is place for an offspinner to complete the attack. The bench strength had been tested in the Asia Cup and most of them will get more opportunities to fight for their places in the World Cup in England next summer.
Chess Olympiad: Indian Dvorkovich elected new FIDE President men lose to Armenia VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI
CHENNAI: Fifth seeded Indian open team on Wednesday lost to eighth seeded Armenia 1.5-2.5, while the Indian womens team drew with Italy 2-2 in the ninth round of the 43rd World Chess Olympiad at Georgia, the US. With three draws and one loss India went down to lower rated Armenia and in the process made the chances of being in the medal list further dim. Playing on the top board with white pieces former World Champion V. Anand split points with the Armenian opponent Levon Aronian in 31 moves. On the second board P. Harikrishna with black pieces signed the peace treaty with Gabriel Sargissian in 25 moves. rkady Dvorkovich, former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, was crowned as the new King of FIDE, the world body governing chess. At the 89th FIDE Congress held at Batumi in Georgia, 46-year-old Dvorkovich was elected as the new President with clear majority over his rival and incumbent Deputy President Georgis Makropoulos. “Dvorkovich got 103 votes while Makropoulos polled 78 votes,” Bharat Singh Chauhan, General Secretary, All India Chess Federation (AICF) told IANS over phone from Georgia. The election was not without some unexpected events. British Grand Master Nigel Short, the other contender who had said that the FIDE Presidential poll is a three-horse race, announced his withdrawal from the contest in favour of Dvorkovich during his speech.

With Dvorkovich’s win, the long tenure of Makropoulos at FIDE comes to an end. India’s D.V.Sundar, Vice President, FIDE and AICF was part of Makropoulos team for the post of General Secretary. “While it is sad that Sundar’s team lost out, the AICF will continue to work with FIDE for the growth and betterment of chess,”
Chauhan said. He said Short’s last minute withdrawal was not a surprise. Early last month, Short had tweeted after meeting Dvorkovich: “United in our belief that FIDE should support federations, and not federations support FIDE. United in our determination to bring transparency and the rule of law, and to root out cronyism and corruption.”

fter I saw Sharat Katariya’s debut film “Dum Laga Ke Haisha”, I hoped the director won’t sell out to the star system. But his second film starred a market-friendly lead star. I hoped Kataria’s second film won’t lose the charm and innocence of the first. Providentially, “Sui Dhaaga” loses none of the delicacy and sting even while providing space to its leads to surrender to their characters. Varun Dhawan surrenders to his character Mauji as though the role was tailor-made for him. Never afraid to look less than heroic onscreen, Varun furnishes his tailor’s character with a rugged candour. This is an actor and a character who are so sincere to their craft that they don’t mind crawling on the floor if that’s what it takes to stay afloat. Varun’s performance is filled with a smothered disappointment. It takes his quietly confident and deceptively docile wife Mamta

(Anushka) to bring out the suppressed ambition in her husband. I am afraid Anushka Sharma, a fine actress in the best of times, is just not equipped to get all the intricacies of her character tightly into place. Anushka’s is a ‘look-Ican-do-it’ performance filled with a kind of phoney Jaya Bhaduriangst that works well within the
film’s claustrophobic working-class atmosphere. The aspirational narrative of how Mauji finds his groove with considerable help from his street-wise wife, works like a charm because all the performers are solidly sincere. But most of all, “Sui Dhaaga” wins our hearts because the director never milks the milieu for soppy sentimentality. Nor does he swing the other way to make the middle-class ambience a place to celebrate misery. The tone is constantly energetic, yet poised. Katariyaa is neither awed by stillness nor intimidated by noise. He listens to the heartbeat of the heartland. We listen. —Subhash K. Jha

dhering to moderate levels of aerobic exercises like brisk walking, swimming, running, or cycling for just two to three times a week for at least 150 minutes can reduce symptoms of depression and schizophrenia, according to new guidelines by the European Psychiatric Association (EPA). These aerobic exercises done in moderate intensity can also improve cognition, cardiovascular fitness as well as cardiorespiratory health in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. According to the researchers from the EPA, a regime of structured exercise should be added to standard medication and psychotherapy.

The study, published in the journal European Psychiatry, stated that in addition to experiencing poor physical health, full recovery among people with mental illness is often poor, even for those receiving appropriate medications. They also experience drastic physical health inequalities, which lead to premature death -- 20 years earlier than the general population. “Signs and symptoms of premature cardiovascular diseases can be identified early in the disease course of mental disorders, when patients are in their thirties to forties,” said Kai G. The findings, published in the journal Body Image, suggest that when women believed that selfies of thin and sexualized women had been edited, viewing these images had less negative impact on their mental health. “Women see the edited photos as less authentic and it reduces the negative effect these images can have on them. viewing thin and sexualized images of models or others can lead women to put more value on being slender themselves -- a line of thinking called thin ideal internalization. This internalization can in turn lead to eating disorders or other psychological problems. But the findings suggested that women were less likely to internalize the thin ideal if they believed the pictures they viewed were edited. For the study, the research team involved 360 female college students who were told that the study was designed to determine how people evaluate images that appear on popular social media sites.

he 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded this week to Arthur Ashkin of the US, Gerard Mourou of France and Donna Strickland of Canada, making her the third woman to receive the prestigious award. The trio of laureates won the prize for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics. Ashkin received the prize for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems, while Mourou and Strickland were jointly awarded for their method of generating high-intensity, ultrashort optical pulses, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement. Strickland became the first woman to receive the award in 55 years after Marie Curie won it in 1903 and Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963. “We need to celebrate women physicists because we’re out there. I’m honored to be one of those women,” Strickland said in a news conference following the announcement in Stockholm. Speaking about being the third woman to ever win the award, she

said she thought there might have been more, adding: “Hopefully in time it will start to move forward at a faster rate.” The inventions have revolutionized laser physics, as extremely small objects and incredibly rapid processes were now being seen in a new light. Ashkin’s optical tweezers are able to grab particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser beam fingers, allowing the American researcher to realize “an old dream of science fiction - using the radiation pressure of light to move physical objects”. The tweezers can capture living bacteria without harming them, a

breakthrough he achieved back in 1987. Since then, these instruments have been widely used “to investigate the machinery of life”, the Academy explained. Mourou and Strickland, on the other hand, created ultrashort highintensity laser pulses without destroying the amplifying material, thus paving the way towards the shortest and most intense laser pulses ever created by mankind. Their innovative technique, known as “chirped pulse amplification”, has now become standard for high-intensity lasers, including the ultra-sharp beams used in corrective eye surgeries.
The treatment that the researchers helped develop has fundamentally changed the outcome for certain groups of patients with advanced cancer, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet here said. Allison and Honjo showed how different strategies for inhibiting the brakes on the immune system can be used in the treatment of cancer.

NASA completes 60 Facebook faces $1.63 bn in EU fine years of space research Adam Mosseri to IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: US space agency NASA has completed 60 years of human space exploration, discovering the world beyond Earth and developing new technologies. “For six decades, NASA has led peaceful exploration of space, making discoveries about our planet, our solar system, and our universe,” the agency posted on its website late on Monday. NASA has not just launched spacecrafts to unlock mysteries of the universe, dispatched probes to make close-up observations of every planet in the solar system, but has also, in August, sent a probe named Parker Solar Probe to the Sun. The historic small car-sized probe will journey steadily closer to the Sun until it makes its closest approach at 3.8 million miles. The agency has also conducted nine manned missions and is planning for a human return to the Moon, followed by missions to Mars and beyond. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officially opened for business for the first time on October 1, 1958. It was created by then President
E
Dwight D. Eisenhower to lead America’s civilian space programme in response to the then USSR’s advances in space exploration. In just 10 days after opening its doors, NASA launched its first spacecraft — Pioneer 1. Although it did not achieve its intended mission to orbit the Moon due to a rocket malfunction, Pioneer 1 did reach a record altitude of about 70,000 miles, highest till then. The probe returned scientific data confirming the existence of the Van Allen radiation belts until it burned up on re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere 43 hours after launch, the post said. —IANS
mbroiled in another massive data breach, Facebook may face $1.63 billion in fine from the European Union (EU) privacy watchdog, the media reported. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission which is Facebook’s lead privacy regulator in Europe, has asked Facebook to submit more details in the incident where data of over 50 million users were hacked via “Access Tokens” or digital keys. The “privacy watchdog could fine Facebook as much as $1.63 billion for the data breach”, the report added. “We are concerned at the fact that this breach was discovered on Tuesday (last week) and affects many millions of user accounts but Facebook is unable to clarify the nature of the breach and the risk for users at this point,” the regulator was quoted as saying. A Facebook spokeswoman said the social media giant will respond to questions from the EU watchdog. In the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook on Friday admitted hackers broke into nearly 50 million users’ accounts by stealing their

“access tokens” or digital keys. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they do not need to re-enter their password every time they use the app. Senator Mark R. Warner has also called for a full probe into the incident. Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and co-chair of the Senate Cybersecurity Caucus, Warner said it was high time the Congress stepped up and took action to protect privacy and security of social media users.
SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook has appointed Adam Mosseri, Vice President of Product, as new head of its photo-sharing app Instagram. Mosseri replaces Instagram cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger who abruptly announced their departure in September. “We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity, as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community,” Systrom and Krieger wrote in a blog post late on Monday. Mosseri began his career as a designer, managed his own design consultancy, and then joined the Facebook design team in 2008. —IANS
Facebook also said it was taking precautionary step to reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a “View As” look-up in the 2017. As a result, around 90 million people will now have to log back into Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook login.

Bail Denied for Suspects in Killing Indian American Landlord
Vasudevareedy Kethireddy
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL— Two men charged in the killing of an Indian American landlord in Illinois, Vasudevareddy Kethireddy, were denied bail by a Cook County, Illinois, judge. Kethireddy went missing August 4th, and then his body turned up in a sewer in the Englewood neighborhood Septwmber 28th, nearly two months later, according to a Chicago. Elijah and Tony Green are charged with the murder. Kethireddy was last seen while he was collecting rent from tenants in the Englewood neighborhood. His body was found near 62nd and May, across the street from property he owned, and near where his car was found on August 7th, the report said. The plates had been removed from his car, it said. Police said the two men strangled Kethireddy, to whom they owed money for rent. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said they also searched the internet for ways of disposing of a body in a sewer, according to the report. At a bond hearing, prosecutors said Elijah Green sneaked up behind Kethireddy, placed him in a chokehold, and “cut off his ability to breathe until the victim died,” the report said. Prosecutors also revealed that a witness used Tony Green’s phone to search “how long it takes a body to decompose in sewer water,” it said. Prosecutors said their motive was robbery. They took more than $1,600 in cash from their landlord, then used his credit cards after killing him. The landlord’s son Shantan Kethireddy said he is stunned and knew the men charged with killing his father.

Sikh Man Faces Death Penalty After Killing Son’s In-Laws BY A STAFF WRITER RESNO, CA— An Indian American man could get the death penalty for killing his son’s in-laws, following a family dispute on September 9th in Fresno, California. Darshan Singh Dhanjan, 65, allegedly shot dead Ravinderpal Singh, 59, and Rajbir Kaur, 59, who were seated on recliners in the home they all shared in Fresno. Dhanjan is being held in Fresno County Jail on bail of $3 million. He has been charged with two counts of murder, and one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon. The Fresno County District Attorney’s office said in a press statement that the charges could receive a death penalty sentence, but a decision as to whether to seek the death penalty has yet to be made. Police are still seeking a motive for the shootings, but told local media that the altercation occurred because Dhanjan wanted the victims to move out of the home, which is owned by Dhanjan’s son, who has not been named, and his daughter-in-law, Jaldeep Kaur, who saw the horrific incident and barricaded herself in her bedroom with her four-yearold daughter before calling 911. The victims had received their green cards just a few months earlier. They had been living at the home for six months and were scheduled to move out but

12% of world’s population still defecates in open: UNICEF NEW DELHI: UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore on Monday broke inspiring news ahead of Mahatma Gandhis 150th birth year that India has driven the greatest increase in the use of toilets in South Asia “at any time in history” over the last decade with over 240 million people using them after abandoning open defecation. The biggest contribution in this progress was by India with as many as 86 million rural households since 2014 having gained access to toilets for the first time. “Five lakh villages and hundreds of districts and 21 states and union territories are now open-defecation free,” said Fore, who is on her maiden visit to India. She was delivering the keynote address at the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention. As many as 70 countries are participating in the four-day event, which
began at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra here, on September 30. The UNICEF chief said the overall progress made by several countries was inspiring. “We’re also seeing rapid results in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Nepal and Cambodia - all on track to eliminating open defecation by 2030. Or even earlier,” she pointed out. “Or Nigeria, Kenya, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo and Mozambique - all have national roadmaps to deliver total access to sanitation, no matter where people live, no matter how distant or hard-to-reach their community might be,” Fore noted with satisfaction. Since 1990, 2.1 billion people globally have gained access to improved sanitation facilities. “One that improves health and nutrition outcomes for children, empowers women, boosts economic prosperity and growth for entire nations,” —IANS Fore said.
More water intake Stress reduces fertility in women cuts UTIs in women H W IANS, NEW YORK
IANS, NEW YORK
omen who drink about an extra litre-and-ahalf of water daily are nearly 50 per cent less likely to suffer from bladder infections, especially in premenopausal stages, a new study has found. According to researchers from the University of Texas in the US, more fluids help to reduce bacteria and limit the ability of bacteria to attach to the bladder. “The study is important because more than half of all women report having bladder infections, which are one of the most common infections in women,” said Yair Lotan, Professor of Urology with the Simmons Cancer Center at the varsity. For the study, published in journal JAMA Internal Medicine, the team focussed on 140 women with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), who typically drank fewer than 1.5 liters of fluid (about six 8-ounce glasses) a day. For 12 months, they asked half of these women to continue their usual fluid intake and asked the

other half to drink an additional 1.5 litres of water daily. The findings revealed that 93 per cent of the women who drank an additional 1.5 litres of water daily had two or fewer episodes of cystitis -- a type of UTI -- while 88 per cent of women in the control group had three or more episodes. The increased consumption of fluid could also help reduce the use of antibiotics as such infections are typically treated with antibiotics, the researchers noted.
igher levels of stress can lower conception or fertility in women but it does not affect men, finds a study. The researchers, from Boston University in the US, found that the association between higher levels of stress and lower levels of conception could be due to decreased intercourse frequency, increased partner stress discordance and higher levels of menstrual cycle irregularity. “Although this study does not definitely prove that stress causes infertility, it does provide evidence supporting the integration of mental health care in preconception guidance and care,” said Amelia Wesselink, Research Assistant at the varsity. For the new study, published in American Journal of Epidemiology, the team analysed 4,769 women and 1,272 men who did not have a history of infertility and had not been trying to conceive for more than six menstrual cycles. The team measured perceived stress using the 10-item version of the stress scale (PSS) to assess how unpredictable, uncontrollable, and overwhelming individuals find their life circumstances. On average, baseline PSS scores
The association between higher levels of stress and lower levels of conception is stronger among women under 35 years. (Photo: Pexels.com)
Researchers have found no association between men’s stress and the likelihood of conceiving were about 1 point higher among women than men and the average follow-up PSS scores among women remained fairly constant over the 12 months. The findings revealed that women with PSS scores of at least 25 were 13 per cent less likely to conceive than women with PSS
scores under 10. This association was stronger among women who had been trying to conceive for no more than two menstrual cycles than among women who had been trying for three or more cycles before enrolling. The association was also stronger among women under 35 years. The researchers did not find an association between men’s PSS score and the likelihood of conceiving. However, couples in the study were about 25 per cent less likely to conceive when the man’s PSS score was under 10 and the women’s was 20 or higher, said the team of researchers.

Flight Attendant Berates Indian-American Mom for Crying Baby
BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA— Krupa Patel Bala, her husband, and their 8-month-old son were flying business class from Sydney to San Francisco September 25th when an incident occurred, according to a Facebook post she wrote, the report said. According to Bala, her baby began to cry in his bassinet at the beginning of the flight and an attendant came over and “yelled” at them. The flight attendant then told her to pick the baby up and soothe it, and then warned that some airlines don’t even let babies fly business class, the report said. “I was told it’s part of the rule book that the babies are not allowed to cry for more than 5 minutes,” Bala wrote on Facebook. But she said she connected her phone to the airplane’s Wi-Fi, read United’s guidelines and found that no time limit exists. Later on, the plane’s captain came over with the attendant to defuse the situation, but Bala says that only the captain was apologetic, it said. “We’ve been in touch with our customer via social media and United representatives met the family upon arrival to apologize, offer a refund and make clear that the experience she relayed doesn’t reflect our commitment to serving our customers, including our youngest customers,” United said in statement.

Shrimad Bhagavata by Chinmaya Mission Chicago Yamunotri
S
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL— On the occasion of the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Shri RadhaKrishna Moorti Sthapana, Chinmaya Mission Chicago-Yamunotri was immersed in the nectar of Shrimad Bhagavata Saptah Mahotsav. Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji, Global Head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide graced the Special 10th anniversary celebrations on September 8th, 2018. Swamiji spoke on “the many facets of Krishna.”
C
The Bala Vihar children presented a spectacular cultural program with a mix of north and south with Bharatanatyam, as well as ras garba and dandiya. The Mahotsav began on September 1, 2018 with the Pothi Yatra and Puja. The entire congregation was enthralled by Swami Shantanandaji’s discourses, which beautifully covered all of the major stories and the Vedantic significance and symbolism behind each of them. Chinmaya Bala Vihar Swaranjali children from Yamunotri, Milwaukee and Badri
centers sang beautiful devotional Kirtans and Bhajans every day before the discourses. The grand and festive celestial wedding of Rukmini and Krishna was performed on Monday and the offering of Chhappan Bhog was on Tuesday. The elaborate sattvik food was served by the Annapurna team. The selfless service by the Sevaks, Sevikas, and devotees that attended the Saptah, Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (CHYKs), and Chinmaya Sethukaris (CSKs) as one big family was gratifying and humbling.

The seminar was hosted by the Argonne Alumni Association at their monthly luncheon meeting and it was presented by Rajinder Singh Mago representing Sikh Religious Society, Palatine Illinois. The presentation was very well received by the curious audience. “It was an effort to create awareness about the Sikh American community and their culture in a cordial environment. It’s good to know about your colleagues and neighbors. Argonne appreciates diversity

and inclusion,” said Rajinder Singh Mago. The audio visual seminar covered who are the Sikhs, their origin, history, culture, contributions to the world and humanity, their sacrifices, their core beliefs, why they don’t cut their hair, why they wear a turban and carry Kirpan, etc. A display table was set up with the Sikh articles of faith, emblems and symbols.
