From our family to yours:

May your home be filled with love, light and laughter this season. Where (or how) does your family give back or support others during the holiday season?

Sharon & Larry Bay, publishers This year we are giving money to Grace Children’s Home/Catherine’s Kids in Tijuana. The kids will receive new shoes (often their very first pair). We are also helping Refuge for Women SoCal, which helps women overcome human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Lisa Gipson, managing editor This year we are supporting women in crises through the Alabaster Jar Project here in San Diego. We also like filling shoeboxes with gifts for children around the world through Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse).

Rik Thiesfeld, art director It’s not a planned thing—it usually happens spontaneously, but I think the U.S. Postal Service Christmas letter program sounds like a terrific way to give back. See page 12 for details on how to participate.

Emily Dolton, resource specialist Our family supports the Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego’s movie night fundraiser each holiday season (this year it’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” on 12/18). We also help decorate a tree for Enchanted Village at Noah Homes in Spring Valley.

Finish this sentence: It’s not the holiday season without … Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant Holiday lights! One of my favorite traditions is driving around town to see the creative and over-the-top light displays. I take San Diego Family’s Map of Lights (p. 20) and try to find the biggest and brightest decorations.

Giovanni Baldan, marketing representative Panettone and pandoro, traditional Italian sweet breads eaten during Christmas celebrations. Many cultures have their own traditional holiday bread — what’s yours?

Tony Andrews, marketing representative A trip to Family Christmas Tree Farm (El Cajon) to pick out our Christmas tree. It’s a fun tradition that gets the whole family into the Christmas spirit.

Linda Bay, calendar editor Lefse — we make this Norwegian bread every year. And college football bowl games. We’re excited to have the Holiday Bowl back in San Diego this year and look forward to watching it at Petco Park.

Michele Hancock, marketing director A trip to Hotel del Coronado to see the themed tree. We also stop by Starbucks for hot chocolate and head to Belmont Park for their Winter Wonder festival, which has holiday music, lights and shopping.

With so many families struggling due to financial hardship or health issues, some parents may not be able to fulfill their children’s holiday wishes. That’s where USPS Operation Santa comes in. Since 1912, the program has helped connect millions of children with generous, anonymous gift givers. Last year more than 23,000 Santa letters were adopted nationwide. To be a potential gift recipient, children need to write and send a letter to Santa by Dec. 10, which will be opened by one of Santa’s postal elves. For important tips on how to write the letter, to obtain Santa’s address, or to register to be an anonymous gift giver, visit www.USPSOperationSanta.com. 10toSteps a More

Joyful Season

It’s a common question: How does my family have a joyful holiday season that doesn’t leave us exhausted, miserable and broke? We have the answers! Here are 10 ways to shift your perspective and take command of this special time of the year.

“Be firm, decisive and assertive, always coming from a place of love and keeping the focus on the origin of the holidays,” says Flynn, who specializes in helping women manage anxiety, depression and holiday overwhelm. “Graciously decline and send a nice note.”

Let go of perfection. Nothing burns holes into the fantasy holiday season like real life. Maybe the tree is lopsided, the dog ate your son’s gingerbread house, or you were so focused on creating the best event ever that you became too sick to enjoy it when the big day arrived. “Decide to do things differently this year,” says therapist Julia Flynn, LCPC. “Strive for good and be satisfied with good. Too often the focus is on the result, and we tend to lose focus on the beautiful process of getting to the result.”

Rediscover the “why.” Take time to reevaluate priorities. How do you want the season to feel? What do you want the kids to remember? “Sometimes we need to take a step back and ask ourselves why this time of year is important to us,” says Maki Moussavi, a life coach and book author. “It becomes an expectation of self and family to have it look a certain way. Take a step back to assess, from an intangible, emotional perspective, why the holidays are important.”

Don’t overcommit. Decide ahead of time which activities won’t work this year. Instead of committing to five parties and multiple gift exchanges, choose a couple that you’re enthusiastic about.

Rest. Self-care is essential all year, but especially during busy holidays when your stress level may skyrocket. Do what reasonably makes sense for your health, time and emotional wellbeing. Continued on p. 16

Prioritize family. Attempts to please others without taking your family’s wishes into account causes undue anxiety, frustration and resentment. “The holidays are about family time—appreciating one another and caring for each other,” says Flynn. “If the focus is on less important gatherings, you can’t enjoy the experience and the original meaning is lost.” For events you’d like to attend but can’t, firmly communicate to those people that you would like to discuss alternative ideas or dates to get together. Don’t feel guilty about standing by your decisions. “You have every right to establish your holiday traditions,” Moussavi says. “You are not obligated to participate in somebody else’s version of the season.” Invite your partner’s participation. If you feel overwhelmed because you’re trying to manage holiday prep on top of working and taking care of kids, ask your spouse for help. Discuss what you’d both like the season to look and feel like. “Sometimes it’s not that men don’t want to be involved,” says Moussavi. “It’s that they are never invited to be—and they don’t ask.” Maybe your partner can mail packages, purchase event tickets or take charge of a few gifts. Don’t allow anyone to steal your joy. Plan ahead for individuals who love to bait you into an upsetting conversation at annual gatherings. Since you know what to expect, rehearse your response for when they pounce. “Get better at making it clear what you will and won’t tolerate,” Moussavi says. “Standing up for yourself is normal, empowered, adult behavior.” Arm yourself with responses like: “I’m here to enjoy myself. I don’t want to talk about that right now.” Or, “Let’s agree to disagree.”

Simplify. “The holidays are manageable if we allow them to be,” Flynn says. “What makes holidays so difficult is our own thinking.” Experiment with small changes to relieve stress. Hire a caterer for a party. Forgo Christmas cards this year. For relatives who have everything, send flowers or make a donation in their name to an organization they love. Don’t compare yourself with others. As Theodore Roosevelt once quipped: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Some people enjoy casting their home in a professionally-created holiday glow while others prefer to hang a festive wreath on the door and call it good. Do what brings you pleasure and makes sense for your budget. Give from your heart. Rather than twisting yourself in knots seeking the perfect present for everyone on your list, take a more light-hearted approach to gift-giving. For example, give a digital photo album commemorating a fun getaway, or an experience like tickets to the zoo or a concert. Volunteering your time is also a fulfilling way to give. “If you are intentional, you can make the holidays about love, caring, understanding, enjoying quality time together and treating each other as the precious beings we are,” Flynn says. v Freelance writer Christa Melnyk Hines plans to slow down this holiday season to focus more on the magic of the season and less on lopsided Christmas trees.

New Year’s Customs Many of us in the U.S. ring in the new year by watching the ball drop in Times Square, kissing loved ones at midnight, and making resolutions (or setting intentions) to improve health and productivity. We also often gather with friends and family for shared food, drink and merriment. If you grew up in the south, a meal including Hoppin’ John (black-eyed peas), collard greens and cornbread is likely on the menu. Some people celebrate New Year’s with traditions from other cultures. My family, for example, eats 12 seeded grapes at midnight. This is supposedly for luck, but mostly we do it to honor my husband’s Panamanian heritage. In Panama, and throughout many Latin American countries, it is also common to burn muñecos (life-size effigies made of straw) to destroy evil spirits and make way for good fortune in the new year. No matter your background, establishing New Year’s traditions within your family is important. Just 28 • SanDiegofamily.com • December 2021

like adults, kids benefit from signaling closure to the previous year and starting out fresh. To help discover new ideas, here are some of the many ways that people celebrate around the globe.

Eat Special Foods

Many choose to welcome in the new year by eating special foods. Along with eating grapes at my house, my family enjoys cheese fondue, something that I grew up with after living in Switzerland as a young child. Another Swiss tradition is to drop a dollop of ice cream on the floor at midnight, intended to invite a year of abundance. In Japan, one food-related custom is to eat toshikoshi (year-end) soba noodles on New Year’s Eve, usually at home with family and friends. On New Year’s Day, a meticulously prepared feast called O-sechi ryori can be served to welcome in good luck, prosperity, and health for the coming year.

In Greece, Vasilopita (a type of cake) is baked with a gold or silver coin inside, then served at midnight. Whoever gets the slice with the coin is slated to have good luck all year long. San Diego mom Vincian Van Moer shares that she grew up eating heartshaped cake on New Year’s Eve in Belgium, followed by cider and galettes (waffle cookies) the next day.

Get Dressed Up

Around the world, people often don their finest outfits to celebrate the new year. According to Encinitas resident Olivier Bourgeot, there’s an expression for this in France, “se mettre sur son 31.” Roughly translated, this means “getting dressed up for New Year’s Eve.” Brazilians, who are known for celebrating New Year’s in massive style, often wear white to designate peace and prosperity. At midnight, people near the beach run into the water (clothes

Around the World and all) to jump seven waves, making a wish after each one. In Italy, it is common to wear red underwear on New Year’s for good luck and fortune. People also attend openair parties, concerts and fireworks displays to celebrate.

Change the Timing

Different time zones impact when New Year’s celebrations occur. If you have young children (even if you don’t), you may wish to consider having your New Year’s countdown earlier in the evening. That way, you can all start the new year well-rested. LEGOLAND is having a Kids’ New Year’s Eve Celebration with a countdown at 6 p.m. Flip to p. 37 for details. Kay McKenzie, a local mom who is originally from England, shares, “At midnight, most people watch (on TV) Big Ben strike in the New Year, which

is always followed by an amazing fireworks display from barges right down the Thames. Nowadays, we see the new year in at 4 p.m. because that’s when the UK does. I love it, since we don’t have to stay up till midnight.” Chinese New Year (also called Lunar New Year) is an important two-week festival that follows the lunar calendar. This year it begins on February 1, 2022 (the Year of the Tiger). To prepare for the festivities, homes are cleaned to sweep away bad luck, then decorated in red (an auspicious color) to welcome happiness and good fortune in the coming year. Many people in China also celebrate by gathering with family, watching impressive fireworks displays, dancing in colorful dragon processions, and giving red envelopes filled with money to children. The Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashanah, is based on the Hebrew

calendar and falls in September or October. It tends to be a more subdued celebration, often involving a service at synagogue followed by a symbolic meal. Jordana Land, mother of two, says, “We celebrate with a meal that includes a round challah (symbolizing the cycle of life), apples dipped in honey (for a sweet New Year), and a noodle kugel (a traditional Jewish dish).”

Develop Your Own New Year’s Traditions

Perhaps the best thing about New Year’s is that your family can decide what to wear, what to eat, and when to celebrate. What’s important is establishing meaningful memories and traditions that your family will look forward to each year. Happy New Year! v Lisa Pawlak is an award-winning contributing writer living in Encinitas with her family. December 2021 • SanDiegofamily.com •

ear-old Jocelyn of San Marcos loves to make art and play soccer. Like many kids these days, she’s attending school and Girl Scouts virtually, video chatting with friends often, and spending lots of time also facing the greatest with her pets. She’s challenge of her life. For the past 19 months, Jocelyn has been battling leukemia. Jocelyn currently has more good days than bad days, but the road has been bumpy. At times, she has endured lengthy hospital stays and bouts of intense nausea. Yet through this grueling experienc e, she has discovere da passion for giving back. In the past year, Jocelyn has organized two lemonade stands, raising over $4,000 for Rady Children’s Oncology Box and other charities. Toy Her Girl Scout troop voted to donate half their Leukemia & Lymphom cookie profits to the a Society (LLS) in her honor. At the time of this printing, she had nearly reached her sales goal of 1,000 boxes of cookies. In recognition of her inspiring story and positive attitude, Jocelyn was recently named Girl of the Year for LLS San Diego and Hawaii. In this role, she will serve as a spokesper son for fellow cancer patients and support the organizat ion’s ongoing fundraisi ng efforts. “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is an amazing organization that not only has helped us 18 • SanDiegofamily.com

Remarkably, this is the Croxen family’s second cancer battle in recent years. Tracy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer almost two years to the day before her daughter’ s leukemia was discovere a radical hysterecto d. After my and Tracy remains in remission18 chemo treatments, . “I believe I went through my journey to help Jocelyn get through hers,” she says. Jocelyn’s first symptom s were dangerously subtle. The Croxens noticed a swollen lymph node on the left side of their daughter’s neck. Aside from that, she remained happy and active. The next week, though, she was getting fevers every other Jocelyn to two different day. Tracy took doctors, who misdiagnosed her with a sinus infection and allergies. They both recommended holding off on bloodwor k. When the fevers didn’t stop, Tracy took it upon herself to take Jocelyn to Rady Children’ (which utilizes specialist s s from hospitals around the county) to insist they run lab tests. The Croxens received the terrible news that day. “Deep down I knew something was wrong, but to hear the word cancer felt like being punched in the stomach,” says Tracy.

SDG&E® builds, inspects, upgrades and repairs thousands of miles of gas pipelines to ensure their safety. As a customer, it’s a good idea to work with a licensed contractor from time to time to make sure the gas lines serving your appliances are in good shape. You can also stay safe by knowing the signs of a gas leak: See-Hear-Smell. If you suspect a gas leak: immediately evacuate the area and call 1-800-411-7343 or 911 from a safe place.
