Great attitudes lead to fewer behavior problems. If these work together, children have a better chance to learn. Social and emotional learning begins at home. Our SEL Programs article (page 16) also suggests parents talk with teachers to find out how to reinforce techniques learned in the classroom. Check out the list of SEL Programs in San Diego. Afterschool programs come in all different shapes and activities. Read about two San Diego County students who have turned their music and sports hobbies into real lifelong adventures. What sports and/or art programs have your kids been involved in? Giovanni Baldan, marketing representative My kids played tennis, baseball, lacrosse and dance, but it was our experience with football where we really felt a difference. The coaches made all the kids feel like family, building confidence and strength in each individual. And the kids supported each other — both on and off the field. Lisa Gipson, managing editor My oldest daughter was involved in dance, singing and CYT from third through 12th grade. Then my husband and I made the switch from theater parents to sports parents because our other two daughters played basketball (one still does) — both were recruited to play in college. They learned so much through discipline, commitment, practice and teamwork — important skills they continue to develop as young adults. His group recently produced two short films and treated parents to a premiere at the Digital Gym Cinema. The kids learned to write, storyboard, act, film and edit. They even used the green screen! A bridge to classroom learning If you’ve ever witnessed your child’s teacher struggling to control student behavior in the classroom, you’re certainly not alone. Kids calmly listening to lessons or working cooperatively in groups are too often replaced by a disorderly rumpus in which educators are so busy dealing with behavioral issues, they are hardpressed to find time to teach academics. Although there are many probable reasons why students (and teachers) are in this situation — including usual suspects like too much screen time and not enough sleep — perhaps the most important thing to understand is that when kids come into a classroom unable to control their emotions, make good decisions, or appropriately connect with others, it becomes extremely challenging for schools to provide the safe, caring environment needed for children to succeed in traditional subjects like math, science and reading. While support from home is paramount, local school administrators are making a commitment to implement high quality, district-wide programs that help address some of these concerns. SEL programs that intentionally focus on educating the whole child (socially, emotionally and academically) have become increasingly important in helping kids thrive at school and beyond. 16 • SanDiegofamily.com • February 2020

What Is SEL? According to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning), SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) is the process through which children and adults: • Understand and manage emotions • Set and achieve positive goals • Feel and show empathy for others • Establish and maintain positive relationships • Make responsible decisions Although many teachers are already instinctually aware that socialemotional learning is crucial to academic success, recent research has provided a greater understanding of its importance and is prompting schools to take further action. The California Department of Education (CDE) now recommends weaving SEL into the work of every teacher in every classroom and afterschool and summer learning program in order to prepare all students for college and careers. We are creating ways and systems in which social, emotional and academic outcomes can be aligned, integrated and supportive of the positive cultures we want to continuously nurture in all our schools.”

Unconditional Love What it’s not: Unconditional love is not about permissiveness or catering to a child’s every whim. It is not about how parents feel toward a child at any given moment. Unconditional love is about how children feel loved by parents, completely and without reservation. It comes without requirements to behave or perform a certain way, and it comes with a boatload of benefits that go well beyond positive feelings.

Oxytocin is a brain chemical released when a person feels love and connection. When oxytocin increases, growth hormones that support the development of the brain, body and immune system increase as well. That means unconditional love not only makes us feel good, but it’s also good for us. It supports cognitive development and the ability to form positive relationships, reduces stress and anxiety, raises confidence and selfesteem, and strengthens the immune system. Here are three ways to demonstrate unconditional love children need to thrive, along with compelling benefits.

1. Hugs

Studies show that hugs and nurturing touch provide positive stimulation young brains and bodies need to grow. Decades of research indicates that a lack of physical contact is detrimental to children, and those who receive adequate amounts of gentle physical touch score higher on developmental assessments. They also experience fewer emotional and behavioral problems.

Action point: Make hugs a frequent and regular way your family expresses love. Give hugs before and after school, at bedtime, and whenever your child needs a boost of encouragement. Be sure to give a hug or reassuring squeeze after disciplining a child to communicate that your love is unwavering, even when behavior needs to change. Important: Always respect how a child feels about hugs. Never force physical contact. Teach kids how to politely (but firmly) refuse unwanted touch.

2. Verbal High Fives

Verbal encouragement helps kids learn language and social skills necessary for successful development. It helps children master language needed to express and process emotions. “Words of encouragement, affection and positive guidance nurture a child’s sense of worth and security for a lifetime,” according to Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell, M.D. co-authors of the bestselling book The Five Love Languages of Children. When using verbal high fives to communicate unconditional love, put more focus on effort than outcome. You might say, “Great game! The way you and your team worked together was amazing!” or “I’m so proud of how hard you studied for that test. You learned so much!” When celebrating accomplishments, children need to understand that while receiving praise for performance feels great, it’s not a marker for earning more love. Words have staying power, so choose yours carefully. When discipline is necessary, take time to explain and communicate your belief in a child’s ability to change unwanted behavior. Kids often take a parent’s words and actions literally. Don’t assume they know you love them. Tell them — and tell them often.

Studies show that focused attention increases a child’s sense of security and self-confidence, decreases incidents of emotional or behavioral disorders, reduces risky adolescent behavior, and may even lead to a reduced risk

of obesity. Focused attention also helps children develop responsive communication, an essential building block of learning. Give children focused attention by being mindful of fractured attention common in today’s age of smartphones and constant distraction. Turning off technology during meals gives families a chance to connect, and it’s a great time to serve up a verbal high five or two. Make bedtime a quiet space to cuddle with little ones while reading a book or where older kids feel free to share thoughts, feelings, and questions. Be sure to get in one more hug or loving pat before turning off the lights. If mealtimes and bedtimes don’t work, think of other ways to connect with kids. Leave notes, create special routines, laugh and be silly together.

Unconditional Love Checkup How do you know if your child feels unconditionally loved? One way is to watch how he behaves when he makes a mistake. Does he come to you for help or does he hold back because he’s worried about your reaction? When kids believe parents are a source of unconditional support, they’re more likely to trust that a parent’s love is not dependent upon performance or behavior. Mistakes are an opportunity to grow and learn. Make sure kids know that — and that the door is always open for honest conversations. Do a self-check. Ask yourself if you withhold approval when faced with something you wish could be “fixed” or changed about your child. Remember that the path from childhood to adulthood is a steady climb. Accept that mistakes, missteps and childish behavior are normal parts of the journey. The best way for parents to encourage children along the way is by giving the unconditional love they need to grow into healthy, happy adults. San Diego teens turn their passions into professions Playing sports or dabbling in the arts may spark a child’s longterm interests. But even if it doesn’t, there are many benefits to participating in extracurricular activities. Arts and sports support social and emotional growth, and help kids learn to focus and develop discipline. They’re also lots of fun! We interviewed two San Diego teens who are fulfilling childhood dreams by pursuing their passions in sports and the arts. Interesting — one is an athlete who also pursues music; the other is a musician who also pursues sports. Meet professional skateboarder Bryce Wettstein and singer/songwriter Marissa Grace McRoberts.

Bryce Wettstein Professional skateboarder and Encinitas native Bryce Wettstein is pursuing her goal of making the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team. The 15-year-old sophomore at San Dieguito Academy started skateboarding with her father at age 6. Soon she took up the sport and her father built a mini ramp in their yard, followed by a blue bowl (looks like an empty pool with curved surfaces for skateboarding). Bryce’s dad “spotted” her through new tricks until she gained confidence to do them on her own. “There’s no limit to what you can do in skateboarding,” Bryce says. “You end up seeing the world in a different way — seeing the world upside down.” Skateboarding has taken Bryce all

over the world. She started traveling internationally at age 12. She’s already been to five continents and many countries including Sweden, China, France and Brazil. Sometimes she misses school for competitions, but she takes homework along and journals about her travels. Bryce is currently on the first-ever USA Skateboarding National Team (along with several other North County residents) and is hoping to qualify for the upcoming Olympic games in Tokyo (qualifiers run through May). “My dream is to be in the Olympics so there’s definitely added pressure,” she says. “The more you want something, [the more] pressure you put on yourself.” Still, she’s taking one step at a time. “I treat it as another day of skateboarding; I continue doing my tricks and do the best I can,” she says. “And I have fun with it.” In the interim, Bryce plays high school and club volleyball. She’s also an avid surfer and is passionate about writing songs, playing ukulele, piano and guitar. She recently released the song “Flip the World (Upside Down),” which is streaming online. Bryce looks forward to releasing more music and playing for an audience. For now, her focus is on skating and encouraging other young people to follow their dreams. “When you dream and really follow your heart, you find happiness,” she says. Marissa Grace McRoberts Marissa Grace McRoberts, a 17-yearold junior at Academy of Our Lady of Peace, says it seems like she’s been a singer/songwriter her whole life. That’s because she has. She started singing and creating songs before she learned to read! “It makes me happy — I can’t imagine my life without performing,” she says. “I’m having so much fun [singing] all the time. It’s the biggest part of me.” Marissa started piano lessons at age 3; followed later by vocal lessons, then guitar. She participated in CYT (Christian Youth Theater) from age 8 through high school, which helped her grow confidence and stage presence (before CYT, Marissa was very shy). Marissa says playing instruments has opened many doors and she encourages kids to pick up an instrument. She taught herself to play ukulele via YouTube tutorials. “Playing an instrument has helped me grow as a songwriter and performer,” she says.

Now Marissa has a music coach and her own band, The Marissa Grace Band. She incorporates many genres into her music, including pop, jazz, blues, rock and country. For the past five years, she’s performed at the San Diego County Fair. She has sung the national anthem at Petco Park, performed at the House of Blues and has had many other gigs around the county. She also shares her music with families of sick children at Ronald McDonald House every month. Another passion is soccer, which Marissa has played since kindergarten. Currently she is on a club soccer team in Point Loma. Marissa plans to attend college in Los Angeles, where she’ll study music.
