Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Spring is on it’s way! March is known for rainbows (with
pots of gold at the end), new growth and spring. Spring/summer camps could be considered pots of gold, bringing new growth. When kids attend camps, they learn different things than when they’re in the classroom. Read about different types of programs on page 16. Now is the time to ask kids what types of camp sound interesting. Camp adventures create great memories! At camp, in a lab or even at home, hands-on science experiments encourage curiosity. We all learn by doing. By experiencing things multiple times and in different ways, we can determine if an outcome is expected or unexpected. On page 22, you will find ideas about how (and why) to raise scientifically literate kids. Nonprofit Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego, which operates under the umbrella of San Diego Family Media, publishes a helpful resource guide called Flourishing Families for the special needs community. The new annual issue will be released in mid-March. Look for it at many of our special events. If you have friends or neighbors with children who have special needs, you may not know how to support them. In this issue, read the article on page 24 that provides ideas on how to help. Pick up a copy of Flourishing Families for them; they will appreciate it. Easter is early this year, on March 31. Find Easter egg hunts and activities on page 29 and make sure to check our online calendar at www.sandiegofamily.com for the most up-to-date events. Don’t forget to “spring forward” (change your clock ahead one hour) on March 10. Also, look for the pot of gold on St. Paddy’s Day, March 17. Life is good; have family fun, found on page 14.

Thank you to the following local families who answered our question, “How does your family like to welcome the spring season?” If you’d like to be considered for our next question, email editor@sandiegofamily.com.
Wayne and Michelle Kishimoto have lived in 4S Ranch with their kids Kian (19), Jaren (17), Elise (14), Levi (9) and Azelie (6) since 2008. “We love the Lenten season that leads to Easter because we try extra hard to make sacrifices for others and build good habits that will stick with us our whole lives,” says Michelle. Nayeli (10), Mikaela (6) and Olivia (7) of Rancho Peñasquitos welcome spring by starting their family’s seasonal garden. “We enjoy growing our favorite fruits (watermelon, strawberries) and a variety of vegetables (cucumbers, carrots, peppers),” says mom Michelle Silva. “Each season, we learn what grows well and what has challenges. The best part is being able to taste everything freshly picked!”

Here Comes 25 ways Spring! to cultivate family fun Springtime inspires new
beginnings. Perhaps you’ve vowed to spend more quality (or outdoor) time as a family and the promise of warmer weather is beckoning. Not sure where to start? You’ll find something for everyone in this list of activities to welcome springtime. Hint: Get outside as much as possible!
Family Togetherness What better way to enjoy spring weather than to dine al fresco? Try a new outdoor café for lunch, go on a picnic or dust off the grill and have dinner on the patio. Choose a spot in the yard (or on the patio) to plant a vegetable garden. Kids love to dig, so everyone can join in! Enjoy the sun, fresh air and the fruits of your labor as your garden grows. • Learn how to plant a patio garden at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-thekids/family-science/plant-a-patiogarden. • Read about the benefits of gardening with kids at www.sandiegofamily.com/ for-the-kids/family-science/gardeningwith-kids. Rent bikes or surreys and explore nearby parks or bayside trails. Take time to observe wildlife, look for spring flowers and take deep breaths of fresh air.

If it’s raining, make the most of it. Grab your umbrellas and rainboots and take a walk. Dance under the clouds and stomp in rain puddles—the kids will be thrilled! Be sure to take photos.
• Raindrop Drip Painting. Once you go back inside and dry off, create a rainy day scene using a drip painting technique and personalize your masterpiece with one of the photos you just took. Get instructions for this unique art project at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/ crafts-for-kids/rainy-day-painting. Gather chairs around a backyard firepit and invite friends or neighbors to get cozy under the stars. Embark on a family improvement project: Install a backyard fountain and enjoy the peaceful sounds of running water. Add natural grasses and flowers that attract butterflies to complete the area. Again, kids and digging—it just works. Go outside and fly a kite, throw a Frisbee, play catch or a round of pickleball. Take a family hike. Find favorite San Diego hiking trails at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-todo/out-about/favorite-hiking-trails-insan-diego. • Discover insightful tips for hiking with kids at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/out-about/tips-for-hikingwith-kids. Arrange a friendly competition of classic backyard games such as bocce ball, cornhole, croquet, volleyball or badminton. Invite neighbors to join in and compete against your whole family. Visit a farmers market—San Diego County has great ones to choose from every day of the week. Enjoy locally sourced produce and the satisfaction that comes from supporting local farmers. Find a list of markets around the county at www.sdfarmbureau.org/ farmers-market. When is the last time you made homemade ice cream? What a fun, nostalgic thing to do with the kids— and it’s so good! Get creative by adding fruit, chocolate, nut butters or flavored extracts. Invite friends over for an ice cream social and ask everyone to bring their favorite topping.
Just for Parents Plan a getaway or vacation. Take advantage of the kids being out of school—or just plan a weekend away. Dana Point is a fabulous coastal town that’s only about an hour north of San Diego. You know what that means? No fighting LA traffic to get there and back! Get details about Laguna Cliffs Marriott (pictured), fun activities for families and where to eat in Dana Point at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-todo/travel. Schedule a family work day, pitching in together to complete outdoor chores. Wash cars, sweep leaves, clean out the garage, paint the porch swing or prepare the yard for summer. Be sure to reward everyone with a fun outing from this list! Munch on Cracker Jack and hot dogs while rooting for the home team. Attend a Padres game at Petco Park, head to a Lake Elsinore Storm game (starts in April) or gather with friends at a local park for your own “opening day.”
Look for food tours around town to try a bite from participating restaurants and learn some local history. We’ve heard great things about the food tours in Little Italy; learn more at www.littleitalytours.com. Or, create your own progressive dining experience by sampling small plates at several restaurants you’ve been wanting to try. Enjoy a burger while watching March Madness at a local pub. Add a little fun with a side bet -- loser has to do dishes or laundry all week. Tackle a small remodeling job together. Repaint the bedroom, add a backsplash in the kitchen or replace the outdated hardware on the cabinets.
Lace up your skates and head to an outdoor roller rink. Check out Ringer’s Roller Rink, located off Hwy 94 (near Chollas Park), which has roller skating for all ages. Find out when public skate sessions are at www.ringersrollerrink.com.
Ready to get muddy? Athletes of all levels will enjoy competing together in a mud run or obstacle course. Try the Ramona 5K Trail Run, taking place April 20. Or, enjoy mud’s healing properties and head to a spa for a mud facial or couples mud massage.
Sign the kids up for camp! Find tons of spring and summer camps in the pages of this issue and more helpful resources at www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/ summer-camps-and-programs. v
Learn something new. Sign up for a class in cooking, art, language, fencing, dancing, mixology—whatever strikes your fancy.

• Single-day camps are one-day events, either full or partial day; Ideal for ages 5 and up.
Things to Consider When Choosing Camps Every family has different factors to consider when choosing the best camps for their kids. Things like personal preferences, ages, budget and work schedules are all important factors, in addition to the following:
So Many Camp Options
Rebecca Hastings
How to decide what’s best for my kids “Mom! I want to go to camp! My friends go every summer and have so much fun. They do lots of cool stuff. Can I go—please?” Maybe you’ve heard something like this from your children. They hear about fun camp activities their friends do or how they met so many people, and they want to have the same experiences. But not every type of camp is suitable for every child. It’s worth the effort to think about and discuss with your kids. From summer-long sleepaway camps to local day camps that last a few hours, there are options for every family.
Understand Different Camp Types Before registering for spring or summer camp, it is important to understand the types of camp available. It’s the first step in thinking through what works best for your child and family. Sleepaway Camps (also called overnight camp or resident camp) • Long-term camps are three weeks or longer and best for ages 10 and up who have experience being away from home and parents.
16 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2024
• Short-term camps are two weeks or less and typically best for ages 8 and up who have experience being away from home and parents. • Single overnights are more rare, but sometimes combined with a day camp program. They are best for ages 7 and up who have previously spent the night away from parents. Day Camps • Long-term summer day camps are full-day programs that last three consecutive weeks or more. Kids go home at the end of each day. They are ideal for ages 5 and up. • Weekly full-day programs are usually five consecutive days (Monday thru Friday) and ideal for ages 5 and up. Week-long camps give parents flexibility to sign up for different themes and different weeks that are not consecutive. • Half-day (or partial) camps are 2–5 hours a day for multiple (often consecutive) days. They are ideal for toddlers and up (depending on programming).
Purpose Consider why you want your child to attend camp. Ask yourself the following questions: • Is my child asking to attend camp or showing any interest? • Do I need camp for childcare? • Do I want my child to develop confidence and leadership skills? • Do I want my child to make new friends? • Am I looking for my children to have unique experiences while they’re out of school? • Is there some other motivator? Other Factors Once you understand the motivators, consider these factors as well: • How far am I willing to drive for drop off and pick up? • Are my kids ready to sleep away from home? If so, how long am I willing to allow them to be gone? • What is our budget? Focus Next, think about camp themes, topics and areas of focus. There are dozens to consider. • SOCIAL: While all camps have a social element, some camps have a focus on social interaction, SEL and relationship building. • ACADEMIC: These camps may include writing, history, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) or college prep. • SPECIALTY TOPIC: Camp programs that focus on a specific
topic such as nature, theater arts, cooking, circus activities, dance, creative arts, filmmaking and many more. • SPORTS: Some sports camps focus on one sport to increase specific skills (swimming, soccer, gymnastics, surfing, fencing, baseball and more), while others offer multiple sports to provide kids a sampling of each. • SERVICE: Service camps focus on helping others. Kids spend time doing community service projects such as painting or planting flowers, relationship-building activities like playing with kids or spending time with older adults, or other projects like supporting local food banks or animal shelters. • VARIETY: Many camps focus on a variety of activities and being outdoors. This is often what people think of when they imagine being at camp. Bonfires, hikes, crafts, water sports, archery, rock climbing and more—all for the sake of having fun with other kids. Your Child Does your child have specific needs or desires when it comes to camp themes? It’s important (and fun) to involve kids in the decision-making process, however possible. Parents can determine the parameters first (budget, length, distance, etc.), then give kids a few options. Be sure to attend camp open house events, if available, to familiarize everyone with programs.

How to Raise Scientifically Literate Kids Photo courtesy of San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering
What if a true/false exam could
never be marked wrong because the truth was left up to interpretation? It is critical to raise children who learn to view information through a realistic, scientific approach so they do not fall prey to believing everything they read or hear.
What is Scientific Literacy? According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, scientific literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs and economic productivity. Some of the things a scientifically literate person has the capacity to do are: • Understand, experiment and interpret scientific facts and their meanings. • Ask, find or determine answers to questions derived from curiosity about everyday experiences. • Read articles with understanding of science in the popular press and engage in conversation about the validity of the conclusions.
22 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2024
• Evaluate the quality of information on the basis of its source and the methods used to generate it.
and society as a whole. Here are ways to instill a sense of inquisitiveness and scientific literacy in children.
• Pose and evaluate arguments based on evidence and apply conclusions appropriately.
READ: From a very young age, read books about science topics to encourage curiosity and broaden knowledge base and vocabulary. As children get older, encourage them to read about science topics that interest them, whether it be dinosaurs, outer space, the environment or technology. Check out book recommendations from National Science Teaching Association at www.nsta.org/outstanding-sciencetrade-books-students-k-12-2024, subscribe to magazines like National Geographic Kids, and find websites geared toward science education for grades K–12.
Science is a critical part of life—we rely on scientific data to protect us from contaminated food, polluted air and water and transportation accidents (just to name a few). Every time we go to the doctor, we depend on accurate medical information. When we go shopping, we rely on scientific studies that have identified products as safe to use. Parents have the power to raise children who are able to evaluate information.
How to Raise Scientifically Literate Children Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist, author, science communicator and father, explained the importance of raising scientifically literate children in a recent interview. He said it is essential for children to be surrounded by situations that force them to think about how the world works. Understanding science empowers people to not be taken advantage of and helps them confront critical issues that impact their lives
WATCH: Seek out children’s TV shows, videos or podcasts that focus on science. My children loved watching Sid the Science Kid on PBS when they were younger, which is all about the scientific discovery process. Now that my son is older, he enjoys watching Discovery Channel shows like Mythbusters, which methodically tests urban legends and myths to prove or disprove each claim. I love this show because it teaches the value of not believing everything you see, but to test ideas using scientific methods.
VISIT: Take kids to awe-inspiring places where they can learn about science, such as museums, planetariums, botanical gardens, aquariums, nature centers and zoos. San Diego is full of them! During these outings, encourage children to ask questions about what they observe. Incorporate science into vacations by hiking, skiing, fishing and visiting places like national parks, lakes and beaches. Take a unique train-centric family vacation! Get ideas in our article “All Aboard! Where to Ride the Rails in California” at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ travel/train-rides-in-california-for-kids. EXPERIMENT: Engage in science experiments at home. It can be as simple as filling the sink with water to test what items sink and what floats. Ask children to make predictions before doing the tests, then ask what they think happened afterwards. Consider gifting science kits to kids for birthdays and holidays. My children have enjoyed building a model volcano, hooking up electric circuits and learning about chemical reactions using everyday products. Or, take it a step further by planning a birthday party with Science Guys of San Diego. The kids will be entertained and learn a few things along the way!
Don’t miss the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering Expo Day at Snapdragon Stadium on March 2 from 11 am–5 pm. It’s free to attend! Get activity details at www.loveSTEMsd.org. CREATE: Incorporate simple sciencebased activities into daily life to inspire a child’s interest in and love for science. Spend time together in the kitchen measuring, cooking and baking. Spend time outside learning about nature,
plant a family garden and enjoy eating the food that grows. There are endless opportunities to bring science to the forefront of children’s lives so they begin to see the world through a scientifically literate lens. When you learn together, it becomes even more meaningful. Most of all, have fun! v Sandi Schwartz is an award-winning author, freelance writer and the founder of the Ecohappiness Project.

people don’t know how to help. Let’s try to change that. Here are 10 ways to support families with special needs: 1. Keep showing up. More than anything, families who have kids with disabilities need people who are not afraid to show up, even when they don’t know what to do. You don’t have to have the answers; just be present. 2. Invite the kids. Kids who have special needs are often left out of fun activities such as playdates and birthday parties. Have a quick conversation with the parents or send a text asking what you can do to help their child enjoy the activity. If needed, invite the child for a one-on-one playdate instead of group playtime, invite the parent to stay and ask if they need any accommodations. Simply ask how to meet the family “where they are” and help them feel welcome.
Rebecca Hastings
Love Your Neighbor 10 Ways to support families with special needs “I don’t know how you do it!” It was a simple statement. There was no ill-will behind it. It was an honest observation from one mom to another mom who was gathering five kids (most with special needs) into the car after coming from the store. She smiled and replied, “You just do.” 24 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2024
Every parent has been there— has walked through something challenging and kept going. It’s what we do as parents. When you have a child with special needs (or more than one), there are more challenges. Sometimes it feels like they will never end. Oftentimes parents of kids with disabilities have to push through really hard situations alone because
3. Don’t gossip. This should go without saying, but it’s easy to forget. Don’t talk about the family or the child’s needs with other people. If you have a question, ask the parent. This is already a struggle with kids they encounter. They don’t need adults making it harder. 4. Get practical. Special needs usually require special care. This may mean multiple doctor, therapist and specialist appointments within one week or even in one day. Bring coffee for the parent at school drop-off. Offer to babysit their other kids. Leave a meal on their porch or have food delivered by a favorite restaurant. One of these gestures goes a long way for a tired mama. 5. Ask kindly. Most families are accustomed to people wondering about their child with special needs. Instead of steering clear, avoiding the subject or staring, ask thoughtful and kind questions. Disabilities are nothing to be ashamed of. We can talk about them in ways that are comfortable. 6. Respect privacy. Everyone has a story. It’s natural to be curious about someone’s situation, but it’s important
to give people privacy. Honor what they are comfortable talking about and have respect for boundaries. 7. Invite parents. Everyone needs friendship and community, both of which can be hard to come by when caring for a child with special needs. Invite the parents out to dinner or over for a barbecue. They may not be able to join in as often as they would like (or ever), but being invited reminds them that they are seen and valued. Keep inviting them, reminding them there is no pressure. 8. Accept quiet. If you text or call and you don’t hear back, try not to be offended. Think of how much you are juggling daily and throw a dozen more things in the mix (even some life and death circumstances). This is what parents of a child with special needs handle regularly. If they don’t return a text or call, there may be a reason. Don’t write them off. A simple “I’m thinking of you” to follow up reminds parents you care.

9. Interact with the child. Sometimes people don’t know what to say when they see a child with special needs, so they say nothing. Make an effort to interact with the child. Ask them what their favorite color is or what they want to be when they grow up. Value the child and show the family they matter. 10. Do more than smile. Families with special needs often encounter people who say a quick hello, but never engage. Even if it’s new and unfamiliar, try making the effort to engage in real friendship. It makes a big difference for the family and for you. v Rebecca Hastings is a freelance writer and mom. She has six siblings, five of whom have special needs. Tell a friend!
